In the wellness and mental health space right now, there’s a lot of buzz around nervous system regulation. And I noticed there isn’t much information being provided to explain what our Nervous System actually is in everyday terms.

What is the nervous system?

The nervous system is the communication network, hub or control center for our body and the billions of cells that make it up. The Autonomic Nervous system is the conductor of balance made of up two branches:

• The sympathetic nervous system(action)
  are the urgent moments that activate fight or flight e.g. like the gas pedal in your car — you go fast, etc

• The Parasympathetic nervous system(calm)
  is what slows you down or provides calm, relaxation, recovery, etc.
  E.g. like the brakes in your car

Nervous system regulation
is the process of helping your body shift out of a high-alert stress state and back toward calm, flexible functioning.

When your nervous system is regulated, you can think clearly, recover more quickly from stress, and stay connected to other people more easily.

Here’s a short practice and pause you can use to reset the nervous system:
PAUSE
Unclench your jaw.
Soften your forehead.
Drop your shoulders.
Take a deep breath.
Relax your mind and let your conscience be free.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction class — March 16 - May 4

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction(MBSR) is an effective, scientifically researched method for reducing physical and psychological suffering while building resilience, balance, and peace of mind. MBSR is offered as a complement to traditional medical and psychological treatments, not as a replacement and has proven to be effective in helping to treat a wide variety of medical conditions. The 8-week MBSR course consists of practicing mindfulness, movement, meditation, and bringing mindfulness into everyday life. Since 1979, more than 25,000 people have completed this evidence-based training.

I have partnered with the Institute for Community Health & Wellbeing at Cal State University Northridge to offer this 8-Week class starting March 16 online via Zoom.

Over the next few weeks, I’m pausing from publishing new content here. I’m taking time to rest, reflect, and invest energy into further developing The Mindful Creative® for what’s coming in 2026. This pause isn’t about stopping—it’s about honoring what I know to be true: that sustainable growth requires pauses, rest, reflection and planning.

Why This Matters?

If you don’t have the tools and resources to manage your stress and navigate suffering, you can easily get taken off your game. I know this because I’ve both taught it and lived it

Since launching The Mindful Creative® in 2020, it’s grown in ways I couldn’t have anticipated, especially during a time when wellness resources were desperately needed. What started as an offering has become a movement, reaching over 300,000 people globally and serving over 50,000 creative professionals and executives across music, entertainment, technology, design, fashion, and beyond.

We’ve partnered with incredible brands and organizations like Amazon, Nike, Spotify, Coachella, The Recording Academy, lululemon, and many more. We’ve been featured in Billboard Magazine, delivered keynotes, led retreats, and created spaces for wellness, healing and self-care in an industry that often forgets to prioritize either.

I’m deeply grateful for all of it.

The Inward Spiral

This pause is my practice of what I’ve been writing about. It’s the inward movement of the spiral—integrating, reflecting, centering. It’s honoring that everything has seasons, and right now, I need to cultivate rather than focus on output.

I’m investing this time in rest and reimagining The Mindful Creative’s visual identity, offerings, and presence for 2026. I am excited for what’s to come and what I am working on to support prioritizing mental, physical and emotional health and wellness around the creative and entertainment industry’s needs.

While I’m Pausing

Even though I’m taking a break from publishing for the next few weeks, The Mindful Creative® is still here as a resource for you. I’ve recently been practicing the celebration of blessings and wins, daily, weekly and moment to moment, which I believe is important, especially at this juncture of my life. But what about burying the death of things, people, places, and spaces that no longer serve us? That’s important too.

But how do you know when something no longer serves you?
And more importantly, once you know, do you give it a proper burial, or do you try to carry it with you?

Over the last year and a half, I’ve experienced the loss of opportunities I thought were mine. The loss of relationships with people close to me, I believed, would last. The loss of resources I counted on. And the loss of versions of myself I’d outgrown but wasn’t ready to release. What’s stuck out most is the loss of relationships. Last week, I reflected specifically on the loss of relationships. In the reflection, I found myself mourning, which made me inquire, did I give these losses a proper metaphorical burial where I could move forward? Or did I try to revive them, take them with me and carry dead weight into new seasons?

If I’m honest, I’ve been doing both. I’m an optimist, so I’ve certainly found myself holding on to these relationships. Maybe because it’s relationships with people I care about, maybe I thought the relationship would stand the test of time and these people would be around forever. Even now, maybe I am still holding on to hope. Mourning is a challenging thing to navigate, primarily because we find ourselves clinging and hanging on to what was, instead of being able to sit with what actually is.

Relationships with people make it tricky, so it’s an interesting dichotomy to experience and navigate.

But here’s what actually is: these relationships I’m clinging to are gone. They’re part of the cycle of impermanence, where everything has its ending. As I reflected, held on to hope and half-way mourned, I realized that fighting what the reality is doesn’t change it; it only prolongs the suffering.

There’s a difference between honoring what was and refusing to let it go. And there’s a difference between gratitude for what something gave us and clinging to it beyond its natural end.

Everything changes. Everything ends. We will experience the loss of a relationship or something else. But will we allow ourselves to mourn properly, or will we drag our losses behind us like chains?

Processing and moving forward in the mourning requires a few things:

Acknowledgment - Actually naming the loss. Not minimizing it, not spiritually bypassing it with “everything happens for a reason.” But seeing it clearly, this relationship that existed does not exist anymore.

Feeling it fully - Allowing the grief, the anger, the disappointment, the confusion to move through us without trying to fix it or rush past it. Just like a win is felt and celebrated, loss also deserves to be felt.

Releasing the story - This is the hard part. Mourning means letting go of the story of how it should have been different, how we should have been different, how they should have been different. It means accepting what actually happened.

The burial - At some point, we have to consciously choose to lay it down. To say: “This served its purpose in my life. I honor what it was. And now I release it.” This isn’t forgetting, it’s completing.

I’m processing it all and some losses are fresh, so I am certainly not an expert, but more a work in progress where I am still learning this. Some moments I do it well. Others I find myself picking up what I’ve already buried, examining it again, wondering if I let go too soon or held on too long.

This Week’s Reflection and Practice:

This week, I invite you to consider what relationship or thing that no longer serves you that you might still be carrying that’s ready to be mourned and released. Try this:

Acknowledging it: Acknowledge what you are mourning the loss of.

Feel it: Allow yourself to sit with whatever emotions arise, without judgment.

Honor it: “This relationship/opportunity/version of myself gave me _______. I am grateful for what it was.”

Release it: Honor what this was, and release it. Try saying to yourself, “May I move forward with an open heart.”

Maybe you have to do this more than once. But mourning isn’t always linear. Sometimes we bury things, relationships, etc., multiple times before they finally rest.

One meaning stopped me in my tracks: the spiral represents the balance of both inward and outward growth and evolution.

What’s powerful when you look at it is that the spiral doesn’t just move in one direction. It simultaneously moves and curves inward toward the center and expands outward and holds both movements at once, which can offer integration and expansion, reflection and action, being and becoming.

As one of the oldest symbols, the spiral reflects something fundamental about how life actually works. We see this pattern of a spiral in our own lives too. Times and seasons to spiral inward where we rest, reflect and integrate our experiences, and return to center. And there are times and seasons we spiral outward where we create, connect, express, and expand into new territory.

The wisdom of this spiral isn’t in choosing one direction over the other. The wisdom is in honoring both.

Here’s one thing that struck me in my research on the spiral:

”Life is never at a standstill; everything either evolves, adapts, or goes extinct. Life is perpetually cycling through phases specifically designed to push systems, organisms, and species towards a collective progression.

In nature, nothing argues with this momentum. The caterpillar doesn’t resist melting to become a butterfly, the tadpole doesn’t freak out when they grow legs, and the willow doesn’t try to live in the desert. But humans, especially modern humans, battle change and evolve all the time. Rather, we want the universe to bend to us and not the other way around. And this becomes our suffering.”

We resist the inward spiral when life asks us to slow down, go deeper, rest. We resist the outward spiral when growth requires us to leave our comfort zone, to evolve beyond who or what we’ve been. This resistance is when and where we lose our balance. And when we lose our balance, we suffer.

The Spiral can teach us many things, like balance isn’t about staying still or maintaining some perfect equilibrium. Balance is dynamic. It’s the ability to move with life’s natural rhythms, whether spiraling inward when that’s what’s needed or spiraling outward when it’s time to grow, evolve, or change.

When we understand this, we can accept things as they are. We can see the ever-changing nature of life(impermanence) without fighting it. We cultivate and develop what’s called equanimity, the fourth of the four immeasurables which brings a calm, centered state of mind that isn’t thrown off balance by life’s constant motion.

You don’t have to choose between going deep and going far. Both movements are part of the same journey.

This Week’s Reflection and Practice:

This week, pay attention to which direction you’re spiraling.
Are you in an inward season of integrating, reflecting, and centering? Or an outward season of creating, expanding, expressing?

Try saying this to yourself:
“May I move with the spiral of my life.”
”May I accept things as they are.”
“May I honor both the inward and outward journey.”
“May I be balanced in my growth.”

It’s simple, but it feels like a compass.

This quote is a gentle reminder that in a world pulling us into yesterday’s regrets and tomorrow’s anxieties, the truth is that life only happens here and now — in this breath, in this body, in this moment.

The present is not always easy. The present sometimes asks us to sit with grief, loss, or discomfort. At other times, the present is joy, laughter, and ease. But the present is always real. And that realness is a gift — a present we unwrap with each inhale, each heartbeat, each exhale and each pause to simply notice that we are here.

This idea became the seed for The Present, A Sonic Meditation, featuring the late, great Casey Benjamin, alongside Chris Sholar and Jahi Sundance. This piece was created as an offering — to feel, and to return home to yourself now.

Sharing and releasing it to the world today, October 10th felt right.
It’s Casey’s birthday and it’s also World Mental Health Day.

Music has so many healing properties and for many is an escape or even a form of medicine. I am grateful to have Casey as a friend and brother and experience how he offered that and more to the world through his musical gifts and capabilities. I believe we need reminders now more than ever that slowing down and being present are not luxuries — they are lifelines.

This Sonic Meditation carries a reminder of presence in its purest form. I’m honored to have shared this moment with him, and I hope this track offers listeners a moment to breathe, to release, and to remember, The present is a present.

What sticks out most to me is “our consciousness is almost completely preoccupied with memory and expectation.” I’ve shared this in sessions I’ve taught and facilitated in the last week.

To me, this passage is the essence of how a lot of us traverse through each day and each moment, without acknowledging what truly is, here and now. While our past experiences bring so much wisdom to our present moment living, sometimes I think we’re too caught up in the past, trying to change things that have already happened or passed and we’re hyper-fixated on the expectation, plans or outcomes of a future that isn’t here yet.

Finding peace within requires us to be in the present moment.

It starts with simply noticing when we’ve drifted into memory or expectation, and gently returning to what actually is.

During one of my sessions, I shared something I think is relevant and important: taking care of ourselves and being mindful doesn’t have to look like sitting criss-cross apple sauce or doing some elaborate ritual.

I went on to explain my work in the space as both a creative strategist and a mindfulness teacher and leader and that my work isn’t about getting people to meditate or do one specific thing. But more about developing ourselves, an investment towards a way of being. It’s about paying attention in the moment without judgment and really committing to taking care of ourselves.

Being present with what is can lead to the reduction of stress, anxiety, and suffering. It can also lead to serious breakthroughs. But it requires consistency.

Wisdom in the Present

Oftentimes, our past experiences bring wisdom to our present living. But there’s also wisdom available right now, in this present moment. We’re not in the past, and we’re not in the future—we’re experiencing the present, observing and noting what’s happening here and now.

With consistent practice, we create more than just temporary calm. We develop a way of being. Research shows we can lower cortisol levels, helping us feel more relaxed and centered. Over time, with this consistency, we train our minds to return to the present moment. We enhance our abilities to focus and concentrate.

Finding Meaning in Being

We discover that meaningfulness isn’t something we need to chase or seek out. Instead, it emerges from our capacity to be present in a responsive, still way. It’s in how our foot touches the ground. How do we meet another person? How do we meet ourselves?

The present moment—the now—is the only moment we actually have. When we dwell on the past or worry about the future, we miss it entirely. So many people look forward to the future so intensely that they miss what’s unfolding right in front of them.

Be present. That’s where life is happening.

This Week's Prompt + Reflection

This week, notice when you’re mentally anywhere but here. When you catch yourself replaying the past or rehearsing the future, gently bring your attention back. Pay attention to the simple things: your breath, your steps, the person in front of you.

How does your foot touch the ground? How are you meeting the people around you? How are you meeting yourself?

The local time is always now.

The present moment is the most powerful place we can be.
The present is where life actually happens—not in the memories or ruminations of the past or the worries of the future, but here, right now.

No matter where you are, no matter what’s happening, the only time you truly have is this moment.

Not yesterday.
Not tomorrow.
But right here.

This moment.
This breath.
This heartbeat.

The present… is a present.

It asks nothing of you, except to arrive.

To notice.
To be.

With every inhale, you open to what is.

With every exhale, you let go of what was.

No striving.
No chasing.

Just this.

The present moment is powerful because it’s the only place life truly lives.

And when you give yourself the gift of presence, you notice your breath, you feel your body, you appreciate the beauty around you, and you connect more deeply with yourself and others.

You realize, you already have everything you need.

The Present moment is not just about slowing down; it’s about waking up
