Today’s dip is a useful gut check after a week that otherwise ran hot. Warsh didn’t say anything dramatic, healthy spending, stable labor, but the market decided to read it as reduced odds of the Fed easing up, and that was enough to knock $200M in longs out in an hour. A lot of leverage had built up on the way to this week’s highs, and it needed an excuse to unwind. Warsh gave it one.

Zoom out and the more interesting story to me is what’s happening structurally underneath the price action. ZEC ran to an 8-year high and is now giving some of it back, exactly the kind of overstretched move our CCS Desk piece flagged, bearish divergences were stacking up on the chart well before today’s macro news hit. This isn’t me calling the top on privacy coins. Moves that vertical usually give some of it back before they go again.

💥 Bitcoin Nears $80K: The ETF Inflow Story Behind the Pump

If you’re looking at BTC near $79K and wondering what changed, start with the ETFs. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $517 million on August 19, the largest single-day haul since early May, then followed it with roughly $606 million on August 20, an even bigger print. That’s back-to-back record-setting days after a rough first half of the year in which the category ran a multi-billion-dollar net outflow deficit. BlackRock’s IBIT has been the dominant force throughout, regularly capturing more than half of daily inflows, though flow breadth has widened too, with eight of twelve tracked funds posting inflows on the stronger days. Analysts are reading this as real institutional positioning rather than pure retail FOMO, with larger allocators treating current levels as attractive entries rather than chasing a headline.

Layer the short squeeze on top of that and you get the speed of this move. Roughly $822 million was liquidated across the market in the past 24 hours alone, with shorts accounting for about $750 million of it against just $73 million in longs. But an RSI reading near 86 is deep overbought territory, and Bespoke Investment Group flagged Bitcoin as more than four standard deviations overbought during the fastest part of this move. That combination, real capital inflows plus an overextended short-term chart, is exactly the setup that tends to cool off before it keeps climbing. Polymarket odds of BTC hitting $80K in August sat around 13% as of Thursday, up sharply in just a few hours, which tells you the market is pricing this as plausible but not a lock.

The honest read: ETF demand and the liquidity backdrop are the durable parts of this story. The short squeeze is the accelerant, and accelerants burn out. ETFs pulled in over $1B combined across the back half of this week, with back-to-back record days on the 19th and 20th. That’s real capital making a call, not just leverage getting flushed out.

Stack roughly $3B in forced short liquidations on top of that and you get the vertical candle we’re looking at right now, the fastest move BTC has made since the October highs.

I’ve said for a while that when the ETFs are buying, price tends to follow, and that’s basically what’s playing out. Still, an RSI near 86 isn’t a level I’m chasing. I want to see how BTC handles the first real pullback into that old 200-day EMA zone, somewhere around $71,500 to $74,000. Hold that and I think $80K happens soon. Lose it fast and this was a well-funded squeeze that got ahead of itself.

Either way, the part of this story I’m most convicted on is the macro backdrop underneath it, Treasury liquidity easing and real institutional flow, not just leverage doing the work.

ETH’s 20% day is the one I keep coming back to, futures volume dropped while spot ripped, which is a healthier tell than most squeezes I’ve watched this year. Bitcoin brushing $70,000 and Hyperliquid ripping double digits on a single Trump quote adds to it. That’s three separate assets moving hard in the same 24 hours, on top of a room full of the industry’s biggest names getting facetime with the administration.

Two things I’m not taking at face value yet. The Bitcoin reserve comment is still light on specifics, it reads more like existing budget-neutral policy restated than a new purchase program, so I want to see Treasury or the White House put real numbers behind it before I price it in. And the rest of this week’s storylines, BIP-110’s chain-split risk, three straight security incidents, and the Clarity Act stuck at 13% odds, are all still unresolved. The market ran this hard anyway. I’m watching how ETH and HYPE hold up over the next 48 hours before I call this a trend change rather than a very loud news day.

🚨 BIP-110 and BTCPay Server: Two Hits in One Week

Bitcoin users have been fighting over what the network should be used for. One camp says Bitcoin is for money only. The other says block space is open to anyone, including people storing images and data on-chain. This week that debate moved off social media and onto the chain itself, when a group of node operators started enforcing their preferred rules without waiting for miners to agree. This is called a UASF, or user-activated soft fork, and the last time it happened it nearly split Bitcoin in two. At block 961,632, nodes running BIP-110 software began enforcing data restrictions with miner support at just 2.6%, well below the 55% needed for voluntary lock-in. If enforcement holds, activation is projected around September 6. A chain split is possible if major pools and enforcing nodes disagree on valid blocks.

Separately on August 7, BTCPay Server was exploited. BTCPay is free software that lets businesses accept Bitcoin directly without a payment processor like PayPal. A vulnerability let attackers remotely drain the Lightning wallets connected to those systems. Lightning is a fast payment layer on top of Bitcoin, and merchants often keep a small float there to process transactions. Those funds were the target. BTCPay patched the issue in version 2.4.2, but updating alone is not enough. Stolen credential files stay valid until you delete and regenerate them. If you run BTCPay with LND: update to v2.4.2 and LND 0.21.1, rotate all Lightning credentials, and move funds to a fresh wallet.

🚨 Trezor Customer Data Exposed in ShipMonk Breach

This one comes hot on the heels of the Coldcard hack, but it is a very different kind of incident. No wallets were touched. No funds were at risk. This was an off-chain breach at ShipMonk, one of Trezor’s shipping providers, and it only affects people who ordered a Trezor in roughly the last three months. On August 10, Trezor disclosed that ShipMonk suffered unauthorized access to systems holding customer order data. Of the 13,689 customers affected, 11,742 had full exposure of name, email, phone number, and shipping address. Another 1,947 had partial exposure. If you did not order a Trezor between May 10 and August 8, you are almost certainly not affected. Trezor emailed all impacted customers directly from [email protected].

The risk is phishing. Attackers now have enough personal information to send convincing messages pretending to be Trezor, your bank, or a crypto exchange. With home addresses in hand, the threat is not just digital. Never share your 24-word seed with anyone. Never enter your recovery phrase on a website. Your device is secure. Your inbox needs attention.

CLARITY Act: Delayed to September, Odds Drop to 13%

The Clarity Act did not get a pre-recess vote. Senate Majority Leader Thune confirmed Democrats withheld the procedural support needed to bring it to the floor. The Senate recessed August 8 and will not return until September 14. Thune filed cloture before leaving to keep the bill alive, with the next vote now scheduled for September 15.

Polymarket odds fell from 27% to 13% on the news. The core sticking point is an ethics provision: Democrats want language barring the president, members of Congress, and federal judges from issuing or profiting from digital assets while in office. With Trump’s 2025 crypto earnings reported at $1.4B+, they are not moving without it. Even if a deal is reached in September, the Senate and House would still need to reconcile their versions before anything reaches the president’s desk.

This was a week where the news was doing a lot of the talking. A Bitcoin governance fight nobody fully agrees on went live on-chain. A payments tool thousands of merchants trust quietly got exploited. The clarity act that looked close a week ago fell to 13% odds but should be picked up when the senate comes back from recess. And the trezor data breach that has nothing to do with your wallet is now putting home addresses in the hands of phishers. Bitcoin holding $63,600 through all of it is its own kind of signal.

The Mk3 exploit we covered in Issue #13 just got bigger. Block’s engineering disclosure confirmed the same flaw extends to Mk4 and Mk5 devices on firmware before 5.6.0, with seed entropy of ~72 bits instead of 128. Total stolen now exceeds $100M. No confirmed Mk4/Mk5 exploits yet, but the structure is classified as “dangerous fail-open.” Q model users on firmware before 1.5.0Q are also at risk.

Update to the latest firmware and generate a new seed from scratch. Updating alone does not fix an existing compromised seed. Multisig and BIP-39 passphrase wallets remain unaffected.

CLARITY Act: 72-Hour Window, 27% Odds

The Clarity Act was left off Monday’s Senate floor schedule with the August 10 recess deadline closing in. No cloture motion filed. No unanimous consent in sight. Even if cloture is filed Wednesday, that only allows a Friday vote on whether to proceed, with full debate, amendments, and a 60-vote threshold still to follow. Galaxy Research cut its probability from 50% to 30%. Polymarket sits at 27% YES on $3.78M in volume.

The blocker remains the ethics provision. Democrats want language barring the president and senior officials from profiting off crypto. With Trump’s 2025 crypto earnings reported at $1.4B+, they’re not moving without it. Miss August 10 and the next window is mid-September at best. Thune says he still expects a vote this week. Bitcoin is trading at $64,331 this morning, up 0.32% on the session and holding inside a descending channel with short-term momentum building off the $63,686 support level. The most recent EngineeringRobo signal is an AI BUY, with the daily and all intraday timeframes reading bullish. The weekly remains bearish, the lone holdout, which tells me we’re in a recovery attempt within a larger structure that hasn’t fully resolved. RSI is neutral at 59.6. Smart Money is OUT, meaning institutional positioning hasn’t committed to this bounce yet.

My bias: CAUTIOUSLY BULLISH. The short-term signals are clean and support has held through two tests. But the weekly bearish read and Smart Money on the sidelines are the reasons I’m not leaning in hard. BTC needs a clear break above $65,000 to shift this from a bounce to a breakout. Until then I’m treating the range as intact.

What I’m watching: A 4H close above $65,000 with conviction volume. That opens the path toward $67,292 — the channel high. On the downside, $63,375 is the level that needs to hold. Lose it and $60,000 comes back into the conversation.

Here’s what I keep coming back to this week. The S&P hit an all-time high AGAIN. Bitcoin held $64K. BlackRock, BNY Mellon, and Wells Fargo all made moves on-chain in the same week. And the Clarity Act is sitting at 27% with 72 hours left. Those things are all happening at the same time, and it tells you something important: the institutions figured out they don’t need to wait for the legislation. The industry will keep moving forward

Bitcoin is holding structure but hasn’t broken out. ETH is waiting for a reason to move. The Coldcard story is still developing and $100M stolen with the coins sitting untouched is the kind of detail that should make everyone uncomfortable. We’ll be watching all of it closely.

Coldcard Cold Storage Hack: What Happened and What To Do

This morning, 594 Bitcoin, roughly $38 million, was drained from 500 wallets in 15 minutes. Not from an exchange. Not from a hot wallet. From cold storage hardware wallets. The devices we’ve told people are the safest place to hold crypto.

Hours later, Coinkite published a security advisory confirming what on-chain analysts were already piecing together: the Coldcard Mk3 may have a flaw in the random number generator used during seed generation. If your seed was created on a Mk3 running firmware 4.0.1 through 5.0.3 — which covers almost every Mk3 in circulation after March 2021 — your private keys could potentially be recomputed by an attacker without ever touching your device. 1,324 UTXOs swept across 4 consecutive blocks in an automated attack. And not one multisig wallet was touched.

I’ve been covering crypto for over 12 years. Hardware wallet RNG vulnerabilities being actively exploited in real time is a different kind of alarm bell because this is the layer people trust most. The attack was surgical. Automated. And it only hit single-sig wallets.

Wall Street’s Biggest Blow-Up of 2026 (And Why Crypto Didn’t Follow)

Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness fund went from a 1,000%+ return streak to a forced liquidation in six trading days. Running 4x gross leverage on AI infrastructure stocks, the fund’s core holdings — Nebius, SanDisk, Micron, and CoreWeave — fell 27–54% in July. Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Bank of America all issued margin calls simultaneously. The entire public equities book — roughly $16 billion at its peak — was sold in a single block trade to Ken Griffin’s Citadel before the market opened on July 30. What remains at Situational Awareness is a $5 billion private stake in Anthropic.

The crypto angle: while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 28.6% from its June peak and AI-linked equities got crushed, Bitcoin held $63,000–$64,000. Crypto stocks were among the top gainers Monday as capital rotated out of chip and AI names. This is the second time in a week crypto has held through a sharp AI trade unwind — and it’s a signal worth watching. Whether that decoupling holds as rate hike fears, a closed Strait of Hormuz, and elevated energy costs persist is the key question heading into August.

The Clarity Act: Down to the Wire

As of today, the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act has cleared the House and the Senate Banking Committee, but has no floor vote, no cloture motion, and no date on the calendar. Senate Majority Leader Thune has told reporters he does not expect the bill to reach the floor before the August 7 recess. Polymarket odds fell to 28% on July 30.

The one piece of movement: Senators Thom Tillis and Ruben Gallego have finalized a compromise on the ethics provision — the sticking point that’s kept most Democrats from committing a yes vote. Whether that compromise holds together enough to clear 60 votes before the recess deadline is still unclear. Miss August 7 and the next realistic window is likely 2027, after midterms and a crowded fall calendar.

That’s when the Senate leaves for summer recess, and if the CLARITY Act hasn’t passed by then, the window closes until at least 2027. At that point, lawmakers pivot to midterm campaigning, and comprehensive crypto market structure regulation gets pushed back years.

Here’s where things actually stand: the bill passed the House 294-134 back in July 2025 and cleared the Senate Banking Committee 15-9 in May. On July 22, Senator Lummis released a new merged draft combining the Banking and Agriculture Committee versions, this time including an ethics provision barring senior officials from issuing their own crypto. But it comes with a 2029 sunset clause and DOJ-only enforcement, and Democrats aren’t buying it. Sens. Murphy, Van Hollen, and Merkley came out formally opposed on July 14, calling the bill “corrupt” and tied to Trump’s own crypto holdings.

The math is still ugly, and it just got uglier. Republicans need 60 votes to break a filibuster. They have 53 seats, Hawley and Paul are expected to vote no, and now three Democrats are on record against the current draft rather than undecided. Senate Majority Leader Thune said this week he doesn’t expect the bill to get floor time before recess. The White House is pushing back, insisting the first week of August is still in play, but that’s a rebuttal to bad news, not a sign of momentum.

Prediction markets have moved with the mood. Polymarket has the odds down to 33%, and Galaxy Research just cut its estimate to 30%, down from the high-30s a week ago. Industry groups including the Blockchain Association and the Digital Chamber are publicly pushing the Senate to act, but pressure from outside isn’t the same as votes on the inside.

If it passes, this is the bill that gives crypto a real federal framework: clear rules on which tokens are commodities vs. securities, a CFTC registration path for exchanges, and the regulatory certainty that brings institutional money off the sidelines. If it doesn’t, the agencies keep running the show through guidance and enforcement while Congress resets after the midterms.

Watch the next two weeks. That’s the real window, and it’s closing faster than it was a few days ago.

Price is consolidating just above $63,725 support, grinding sideways rather than trending, and the short-term picture is genuinely indecisive. The 45M and 15M timeframes are showing bearish pressure, and RSI sitting neutral in the high 40s isn’t giving a clear read in either direction.

The one bright spot: the 1D timeframe has flipped bullish, which is worth watching closely. But Smart Money flow is still OUT, meaning the bigger institutional money hasn’t stepped back in to confirm this yet. Until that changes, this is a chop-and-wait setup, not a breakout.

My bias: NEUTRAL, leaning cautiously bullish. The daily flip is encouraging, but with the shorter timeframes bearish and Smart Money still sidelined, this isn’t a market to chase. It’s one to watch confirm.

What I’m watching: Whether $63,725 holds as support on a closing basis, and whether Smart Money flow flips to IN or BALANCED. That combination is what turns this from indecisive chop into a real setup for a push back toward $66K.

Don’t force a trade into the noise. Let the daily strength either get confirmed by the shorter timeframes or fade, and let Smart Money show its hand before sizing in.

However, a few months ago when these same stocks were running 30, 40, 50 percent, Bitcoin was left out of that rally entirely. The AI trade was the trade, and crypto wasn’t invited. Now those stocks are crashing and BTC is holding $64,000. That’s not a coincidence. It’s rotation, and it’s Bitcoin’s turn.

The real standout this week is Ethereum. ETH has been quietly building momentum for two weeks while everyone was focused elsewhere. It ran to $1,946 before pulling back, and that pullback is healthy. We need to consolidate in the $1,800 to $1,900 range to build a proper base before $2,000 becomes sustainable. A clean break above $2K without that base would get sold. The structure right now is actually more constructive because of the pullback, not in spite of it.

The ETH/BTC pair is the tell. Ethereum is leading Bitcoin right now. When ETH leads, it typically signals a broader altcoin rotation building underneath. Real money moving, not speculation chasing headlines. The move to $2,000 would be the thing that changes the conversation, and we are closer to that moment than most people realize.

The through-line this week is simple: the old trade is dying and the crypto trade is quietly setting up. The market is telling you something. The question is whether you’re listening.

While AI stocks, memory chips, and space plays are getting repriced by 20–50%, BTC is building support at current levels rather than breaking down with them. That decoupling is the story this week. The structure is coiling — not rolling over — and the setup points to a push higher once this base firms up. RSI is sitting at 52.3 — neutral and not overbought — with multi-timeframe signals still bearish and Smart Money flows showing OUT. The price action is holding, but confirmation hasn’t arrived yet.

My bias: CAUTIOUSLY BULLISH. The macro backdrop is noisy with the tech selloff creating risk-off sentiment broadly, but Bitcoin is refusing to follow. That’s a signal worth respecting. The weekly and multi-timeframe trends are still bearish, so this is a watch-and-confirm setup, not a chase.

Ethereum is the outlier this week — and it’s been building quietly for two weeks while everyone was watching the carnage in tech stocks.

Ethereum is the one to watch. It hit $1,946, pulled back, and is building exactly the base it needs. The ETH/BTC pair is leading. That’s the signal and soon Ethereum could be breaking $2000 with hopes of another altseason.

Bitcoin held up well over the weekend, hovering around $64,000 through Saturday and Sunday despite the Iran conflict flaring back up. A few months ago, that headline alone would have sent crypto down 10%. The fact that it didn’t tells you something about where we are in the cycle.

We are now pulling back toward $62,000 as of this writing, which is not surprising. The market got ahead of itself pricing in a clean geopolitical resolution, and now it’s recalibrating. But I don’t read this as bearish. Bitcoin has been building a base, and a retest of $62K while macro uncertainty is elevated is actually constructive. Watch whether it holds above $60,000 to see our next move.

Ethereum is looking more interesting right now. ETH has been quietly setting up for a run at $2,000, and the technicals are looking ripe. The problem is it’s still moving with Bitcoin. When BTC dips, ETH follows. We haven’t had the decoupling moment yet where ETH trades on its own fundamentals. When that separation happens, and I think it’s coming eventually, the move could be sharp. We will eventually head back to All Time Highs.

For now both are tracking together, which means the real question is how BTC handles the $62K level. Hold it and ETH has a shot at $2K. Lose it and we wait for the next base.

This week's interviews cover three different corners of where the industry is actually building. Reid Cuming of Ground breaks down how onchain yield gets embedded into everyday banking products without the user ever touching a wallet. Peter Anthony of Perceptron makes the case for decentralized AI data infrastructure at 92% lower cost than legacy providers. And Misha Putiatin of Symbiotic explains why collateral markets, not restaking, is the right frame for what they are building and how it solves the RWA redemption problem institutions have been stuck with for years. Worth reading all three.

📊 MARKET ANALYSIS — BITCOIN 4H

BTC is trading at $62,774 as of this morning, sitting inside a tightening wedge structure on the 4H. The low of $57,800 marked the cycle support that held after the AI BUY signal fired near the bottom, and price has since recovered into the $62K–$64K consolidation zone. The bigger-picture channel is compressing, meaning a directional break is coming. The question is which way.

The dashboard is mixed but leaning cautious. Weekly and 3H are both bearish, with the 1D holding neutral. Multi-timeframe reads neutral overall. Smart Money is OUT. RSI sits at a neutral 54.88 on the primary and 39.09 on the secondary. Not oversold, not overbought, just range-bound. AI Social Intelligence Score is 3, the weakest of the assets tracked this week, reflecting low conviction from the crowd.

My bias: neutral, watching for a break. The wedge has to resolve. A clean hold above $63,380 keeps the path to $64,000–$65,000 open. Lose $62,500 and the $57,800 low comes back into focus fast, especially with the KOSPI crashing this morning and Warsh testifying Tuesday.

ETH is at $1,777 on the 4H, holding near the intersection of a rising channel structure after two AI BUY signals fired off the $1,505 low. The recovery has been steady but unspectacular. Price is back inside the $1,773–$1,802 zone and has not yet pushed into any meaningful breakout territory.

The dashboard is more constructive than Bitcoin’s. The 1D reads bullish and multi-timeframe is bullish, even as the 1W and shorter timeframes stay bearish. Bitcoin is sitting on $62K with a lot of noise overhead. Korea selling off, the Fed testifying, the CLARITY Act on the floor. None of it resolves this week, but all of it is pressure on the same level. Hold $62K and ETH has a real shot at $2K. Lose it and we wait for the next base.
