In a month of August like this one, in 1890, Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island.

August would return more than once as a significant month in his strange journey. Decades later, it would see him take part in an unusual literary experiment alongside some of the greatest names in weird fiction. And in another August, the pages of Weird Tales would introduce readers to one of his most fascinating alien races.

Issue #005 — Born Under Strange Stars

So, on the 136th anniversary of Lovecraft’s birth, we are not going to tell you the story you already know. Instead, this Field Report follows three August dates, three stories, and three different ways into Lovecraft’s universe.

Anomalous Phenomenon — Under a Darkened Sun

This month, the anomalous phenomenon wasn’t found in an old newspaper, a forgotten manuscript, or some obscure New England chronicle. We witnessed it ourselves.

On August 12, a solar eclipse crossed Spain. We had seen countless photographs of eclipses before, of course. But actually standing beneath one was something else entirely.

For a few extraordinary moments, something utterly predictable — an event calculated years in advance — felt almost impossible. It is easy, after experiencing something like this, to understand why humanity has looked to the sky with such fascination for thousands of years.

And Lovecraft certainly did. Long before Cthulhu, Yuggoth or the strange worlds of his fiction, Howard Phillips Lovecraft was a devoted amateur astronomer.

His fascination with the night sky began during childhood. He acquired a telescope, made systematic observations and, while still a boy, produced his own amateur astronomical publications. Astronomy became one of the great passions of his early life, and he would later write articles and newspaper columns about the heavens.

The cosmos that eventually became such an essential part of Lovecraft’s fiction was therefore not merely an abstract source of horror. He actually knew the sky. He watched it, studied it and wrote about it.

Perhaps that is worth remembering when reading his stories.

For Lovecraft, the stars were never simply decoration behind the monsters.

They came first.

In August 1931, Weird Tales introduced readers to one of Lovecraft’s most alien creations: the Mi-Go.

Pinkish, fungoid beings with crustacean-like bodies, antenna-covered heads and membranous wings, they travel through interstellar space and maintain an outpost on Yuggoth — the mysterious outer world Lovecraft associated with Pluto, which had been discovered just days before he began writing the story.

Their most disturbing technology allows them to remove a human brain, preserve it alive inside a metallic cylinder and transport it between worlds.

The Mi-Go are not demons or supernatural monsters.

They are explorers from the cosmos.

And Earth is simply one of the places they visit.

From the Archives: The Challenge from Beyond

Five writers. One story. August 1935.

In August 1935, Lovecraft took part in a rather unusual literary experiment.

The Challenge from Beyond was written collectively by C. L. Moore, A. Merritt, H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and Frank Belknap Long. Each author continued the story from where the previous writer had left it, taking it in unexpected new directions before passing it on.

Lovecraft wrote the third section — and the original typescript of his contribution still survives in the H. P. Lovecraft Collection at Brown University.

In a June much like this one, in 1922, H. P. Lovecraft was working on the later installments of a serialized story for the amateur magazine Home Brew. Published under the heading Grewsome Tales, it would eventually become one of his most enduring creations: Herbert West–Reanimator..

Issue #004 — Herbert West and the Dream of Defeating Death

In this report, we examine one of Lovecraft’s most unsettling obsessions: the belief that death is not an ending, but a problem to be solved.

Anomalous Phenomenon — Herbert West

Unlike many of Lovecraft’s horrors, Herbert West did not seek forbidden knowledge hidden in ancient tomes, nor did he uncover cosmic truths beyond human understanding. His obsession was far more direct.

West believed that death was merely a biological condition — a failure of the body’s mechanisms rather than a supernatural boundary. If life could be understood as a process, then perhaps it could be restarted.

Working in secret laboratories and improvised morgues, he developed a series of experimental reagents designed to restore life to the recently dead. The results were inconsistent, often violent, and increasingly disturbing..

What emerged from these experiments was not true resurrection, but something far stranger: bodies that moved without reason, minds that returned fragmented, and fragments of life that should never have been restored.

For Herbert West, each failure was simply another step toward success. For everyone else, it was evidence that some boundaries exist for a reason.

Case File — Herbert West

Occupation: Physician
Affiliation: Miskatonic University Medical School

Unlike the scholars, antiquarians, and accidental investigators who populate much of Lovecraft’s fiction, Herbert West was a man of science.

A brilliant but deeply obsessive medical student, West rejected traditional explanations of death and devoted himself to a single objective: discovering a method to restore life to the dead.

His experiments began while studying medicine at Miskatonic University — the institution that would later become one of the most important locations in the Cthulhu Mythos. Herbert West–Reanimator is generally considered to contain the first appearance of Miskatonic University in Lovecraft’s fiction.

Driven by relentless curiosity and complete disregard for ethical boundaries, West conducted a series of increasingly dangerous experiments using freshly deceased subjects. Each apparent breakthrough brought new horrors, yet only strengthened his conviction that success was within reach.

What makes Herbert West particularly unsettling is not the existence of monsters or supernatural forces. His greatest danger lies in something far more familiar: the belief that knowledge alone justifies any sacrifice.

In many ways, he represents one of Lovecraft’s recurring themes — the pursuit of forbidden knowledge without regard for its consequences.

Unlike many of Lovecraft’s most celebrated stories, Herbert West–Reanimator was originally written as a commissioned serial for the amateur magazine Home Brew. Lovecraft was paid for each installment and later expressed little affection for the work, criticizing the format’s reliance on recaps and cliffhangers. Yet despite the author’s reservations, the story would go on to become one of his most enduring creations.

Pop Culture Echoes

Although Herbert West–Reanimator was originally published as a serialized story in 1922, its most enduring legacy emerged decades later on the screen.

In 1985, director Stuart Gordon adapted Lovecraft’s tale into Re-Animator, a film that would become one of the most influential Lovecraft-inspired movies ever produced. Blending horror, dark comedy, and graphic special effects, the film transformed Herbert West from an obscure literary figure into a cult icon.

The character continued to reappear in comics and other media, including the 1991 Re-Animator comic adaptation and Dynamite’s Army of Darkness vs. Re-Animator, where West’s experiments crossed paths with another legendary horror franchise.

More than a century after its publication, Lovecraft’s ambitious physician remains one of the most recognizable examples of forbidden science in popular culture.

Archive Fragment — Reanimation

Not every experiment remains confined to the archives.

Recently, the Cthulhu Project community helped us perform a small act of reanimation of our own. Thanks to the support of nearly one thousand backers, Cthulhu Mythos II returned from the vaults and became one of our most successful playing card campaigns to date. For those who missed the original experiment, the Late Pledge remains open.

While reviewing our records, we also recovered another curious subject from a different corner of the archive.

Clarice Hewer is a character currently being developed for The Eye of Dagon, an upcoming expansion for Chants for the Old Ones. Though unrelated to the original story, her design serves as a fitting reminder that some ideas never remain buried for long.

First published 90 years ago in the June 1936 issue of Astounding Stories, The Shadow Out of Time introduced one of Lovecraft’s most unsettling creations:

Issue #03 — The Great Race of Yith

Not a monster lurking in the shadows. Not a god sleeping beneath the sea.
But a civilization that conquered time itself.

The Great Race of Yith did not travel through the stars in search of new worlds. Instead, they projected their minds across millions of years, inhabiting the bodies of other beings to gather knowledge from every age of the universe.

In this report, we examine one of Lovecraft’s most ambitious visions: a species for whom identity is temporary, bodies are interchangeable, and history itself is an open book.

Anomalous Phenomenon — The Yithians

Among all of Lovecraft’s creations, the Yithians are unique in one crucial respect: the form we know may not be their true form.

The iconic cone-shaped beings described in The Shadow Out of Time were merely the bodies inhabited by the Great Race during their time on prehistoric Earth.

Their original appearance remains unknown.

What endured across the ages was not their physical form, but their minds — consciousnesses capable of moving through time and inhabiting other species in pursuit of knowledge.

Case File — Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee

In 1908, Professor Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee of Miskatonic University collapsed during a lecture and remained mentally absent for nearly five years.

When he recovered, he had no memory of what had occurred.

Over time, disturbing dreams began to haunt him — visions of immense libraries, alien cities, and a civilization that existed hundreds of millions of years before humanity.

Peaslee eventually came to suspect an impossible truth: during those lost years, his mind had been displaced and his body occupied by a member of the Great Race of Yith.

His testimony forms the core of The Shadow Out of Time, and remains one of the most compelling accounts of consciousness exchanged across the abyss of time.

Pop Culture Echoes — Futurama

Lovecraft’s influence reached even the animated world of Futurama.

In the episode The Day the Earth Stood Stupid, giant cosmic brains descend upon Earth and drain humanity of its intelligence.

While not a direct adaptation of the Yithians, the concept echoes one of Lovecraft’s most enduring ideas: that the greatest power in the universe may not be physical strength, but intellect far beyond human comprehension.

Archive Fragment — The Deck

Some entities inspire fear through their monstrous appearance. The Yithians are terrifying for a different reason.

They suggest that identity itself is temporary — that memories can be displaced, bodies exchanged, and entire civilizations preserved by minds that refuse to die.

It is this unsettling idea that made the Great Race of Yith the natural choice for the cover of our new deck, Cthulhu Mythos II.

A tribute to one of Lovecraft’s most visionary creations brought to life through the artwork of Sandro Fazlinovic, and to the enduring mystery of a species whose true form may never be known.

In this report, we return to a documented anomaly first recorded in 1927.

It described something that could not be named — only observed. A colour beyond any known spectrum. A presence that did not act with intent, yet altered everything it touched.

Issue #02 — The Unnameable

It was not a creature. It was a condition.

Anomalous Phenomenon — The Colour

The account unfolds through fragments — reports, testimonies, and observations gathered after the event. As one record states:

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.”

What emerged was not an entity, but a process.

The land changed first. Then the water. Then the living.

No intention could be inferred. No communication established.

The phenomenon did not spread with purpose — only with presence.

It does not arrive. It permeates.

The Blasted Heath

The aftermath remained long after the source had vanished.

The area came to be known as the Blasted Heath — a place where vegetation failed, structures decayed, and the land itself seemed drained of vitality.

Nothing visible remained. Yet nothing returned to normal.

Cinematic Echoes — Contamination

One of our enduring fascinations is observing how Lovecraft’s work permeates popular culture — not only through literature, but across film, comics, and other forms of expression. Echoes of The Colour Out of Space can be found far beyond its original pages.

In Creepshow, directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King, the segment The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill presents a quiet contamination: a meteorite falls, and something begins to spread.

It does not attack. It alters.
The land changes first. Then the body. Then the mind.

What arrives is not a creature. It is a transformation.

Graphic Echoes — The Colour in Panels

Jumping to the comic scene, the problem remains unchanged: how to represent what has no name, no form — not even a colour.

In his adaptation, Gou Tanabe renders the phenomenon through absence, allowing contrast and silence to suggest what cannot be shown.

Archive Fragment — The Colour

A documented fragment from a prior archive has resurfaced.

This card, part of The Writer — now out of print — depicts the phenomenon described in The Colour Out of Space. The card does not attempt to define it, but to suggest its presence through distortion, colour, and imbalance.

The artifact remains limited. No further copies are in circulation.

Mythos Dispatch

Cosmic horror continues to surface across contemporary media.

Events such as the Lovecraftian Days on Steam highlight a range of interpretations — from investigative narratives to atmospheric experiences like Dredge, where the unknown lingers beneath the surface, to foundational titles such as Alone in the Dark.

The form changes.

The unease remains.

In a February like this one, in 1928, The Call of Cthulhu appeared in the pages of Weird Tales. With its publication, a seed was planted — one that would later define the most recognizable axis of cosmic horror.

Issue #01 — The Foundational Text

What began as fragments — newspaper clippings, academic notes, testimonies — became a structure. Not a monster story. A cosmology.

With The Call of Cthulhu, horror shifted from the gothic to the cosmic. Humanity was no longer threatened. It was irrelevant.

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.”

Weird Tales #52, February 1928 with The Call of Cthulhu for the first time

Anomalous Entity — Cthulhu

First described in The Call of Cthulhu, Cthulhu lies dormant in the drowned city of R’lyeh — neither god nor demon, but something older, vast, and profoundly indifferent.

After the death of H. P. Lovecraft, his stories were preserved, edited, and republished by close correspondents. Over time, readers began to perceive an interconnected cosmology — what would later be called the Mythos. The entity endured beyond its original pages.

A decisive resurgence came in 1981 with Call of Cthulhu, published by Chaosium. For the first time, cosmic horror became participatory. Investigation, forbidden knowledge, and psychological collapse were no longer narrative devices — they became mechanics.

In the decades that followed, modern board games such as Arkham Horror carried Cthulhu further into shared tables and visual culture. Illustration, sculpture, and digital adaptations gave tangible form to what had once been described only in fragments. Recent interpretations continue this lineage — including titles such as Chants for the Old Ones, where cults, invocations, and forbidden rites are translated into competitive ritual at the table.

Cthulhu did not conquer culture. It accumulated presence.

Nearly a century after its first appearance, the name has become shorthand for cosmic horror itself — and the central pillar of our own homage to Lovecraft: Cthulhu Project.

A new strip from François Launet — known to many as Goomi, creator of Unspeakable Vault (of Doom) — is forthcoming. Once again, his unmistakable line drifts into the world of Chants for the Old Ones, documenting its absurdities with unsettling precision.

Further anomalies will be catalogued in the next report.

Cinematic Echoes — Tentacles on Screen

Cthulhu has rarely appeared directly on screen — yet its silhouette lingers.

In Cloverfield, the towering, partially glimpsed creature is never named, never explained. Its scale, its indifference, and the urban devastation it leaves behind evoke a distinctly cosmic unease.

More explicit is Underwater, where a colossal abyssal entity briefly emerges — a form unmistakably reminiscent of Lovecraft’s sleeping god beneath the sea.

Even popular animation has begun to gesture toward these depths. The upcoming Minions & Monsters has surprised audiences with promotional material hinting at tentacled absurdities — cosmic dread refracted through comedy.

With this first issue, we inaugurate Miskatonic Field Report, a publication devoted to exploring the universe of H. P. Lovecraft beyond the physical artifacts we create.

Here we will delve into the stories, creatures, places, and ideas that shaped cosmic horror, tracing the connections of a Mythos that continues to expand nearly a century later.

This archive does not seek answers. It exists to open doors.

Anomalous Discovery — The Gug

Among the most disturbing entities recorded in the Dreamlands are the Gugs.

They first appear in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, described as towering, malformed beings dwelling beneath the Enchanted Wood, feared even by other creatures of the Dreamlands. Their most unsettling feature — a vertical mouth splitting the head from crown to chin — marks them as profoundly aberrant.

The Gugs embody one of Lovecraft’s central ideas: beings so ancient and alien that they exist beyond morality, reason, or any natural order. Their presence is not a challenge to be faced, but a warning to be heeded.

Encounters are rare. Survival, rarer still.

Gugs have also been documented in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath adapted by I. N. J. Culbard, and in the Dreamlands Deck (picture) released by Bicycle for Cthulhu Project, among other artifacts.

Behind the Veil

Today we reveal the evolution of the board for Mythos Division, a cooperative game built around roll & write mechanics.

On the left, the point of origin: the original prototype developed by Eloi Pujadas and Ferran Renàlias, created to test structure, flow, and core mechanics.

On the right, the board featuring the final artwork by Andrea Torres, the result of the full editorial process and its visual integration representing locations in Arkham, crossed by the Miskatonic river.

The artifact has moved beyond the prototype stage and has now entered production.

Since that exciting beginning, many more projects followed over the years — always thanks to your support, the amazing backers of Cthulhu Project: Cthulhu Mythos Playing Cards, Mountains of Madness, Necronomicon… and at the end, working with Bicycle®! But all of them were based on the popular Cthulhu Mythos. And yet, Lovecraft gave us much more than that.

At their core, the Cthulhu Mythos and the Dream Cycle share a deep connection. In fact, when you go back and reread the stories, you can feel how many of the ideas that later became the Mythos are already taking shape. For Lovecraft, it was all a continuum — an exploration of the unknown. I’ve really enjoyed revisiting The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, imagining Lovecraft writing all those stories without ever suspecting the cult following they would have decades after his death — without even having most of them published during his lifetime. I can’t help but smile thinking of Howard suddenly reappearing today, seeing his fantastic tales beautifully published in editions he never could have dreamed of… or finding playing cards inspired by his work! What madness, right?

And yet here we are, still going, thanks to all of you — with our 30th project dedicated to the master of Providence and his mesmerizing Dream Cycle, now brought to life through the eyes of Seta Tatuajes: Nyarlathotep, Gugs, Zoogs, Nightgaunts, Leng Spiders, Cats of Ulthar… we hope you enjoy them as much as we did during these past months of work and imagination.

Cthulhu Project

It is my pleasure to announce that we have taken an important step forward in the way we connect with you. Today, we launch a new communication platform designed to offer a smoother, more direct, and enriching experience.

Soon, we’ll share more details about these changes, and many exciting things will be coming through this channel. But first, we want to talk to you about Dreamlands.

As you know, we have dedicated a great deal of time and energy to creating collector’s items based on the Cthulhu Mythos. In fact, right now, we are shipping the new Necronomicon Bicycle® deck to our backers. However, before the Mythos, Lovecraft devoted many stories to what we now call the Dream Cycle.

These tales are filled with mind-blowing characters and creatures we all know: Randolph Carter, Richard Pickman, Nyarlathotep, Nightgaunts, the Cats of Ulthar, Moon-Beasts… and also others that, while not always in the spotlight, are just as fascinating.

That’s why our next project is dedicated to the Dreamlands! There, you’ll find the next Bicycle® deck—which is turning out amazing!—but also other surprises that we’ll be revealing soon.
