Target is very friendly, sweet and loves attention, a real velcro dog. He still has puppy energy, but does well in the house. He loves long walks, staring out the window and watching the world go by. He does well with children. He is housebroken, and walks nicely on leash.

Target has met other dogs at the shelter, he does best with tolerant friends, and may need to meet any potential doggie roommates to make sure they are a good match.

Nala Ray | 8 years old | 65 lbs

Our rescue can pull Nala directly to an APPROVED ADOPTER, but we need someone to step up for her immediately.

Nala is a sweet, affectionate 8-year-old pittie who loves people and has never met a stranger. She is reported to be housebroken, non-destructive when left alone, and incredibly loving with staff and volunteers. She enjoys walks, getting outside, and spending time with her people.

The shelter environment has been incredibly stressful for Nala, and the constant activity has caused barrier reactivity when people or other dogs pass her kennel. But we have seen that she can do much better outside of that stressful environment.

During a previous foster stay, Nala was described as a wonderful, well-mannered houseguest both inside the home and on walks.

Nala needs:

A calm, loving home

No cats

Preferably as the only dog

Patience, consistency, and the chance to decompress

She does not need a perfect home. She needs someone willing to give her a chance.

Arabella's former family described her as friendly. She enjoys playing and socializing with her family. Arabella has done well with children of all ages. She lived with a cat and another dog and did well. She does well when left alone in the home. She is housebroken and can be crated when needed.

Tom Tom is a gentle boy who is learning to trust. After some initial hesitation, he relaxes and enjoys his walks. He shows nice leash manners, and remains calm around other dogs. This very handsome brindle boy loves just walking on the trails, sniffing and exploring. He also accepts gentle pets and returns easily to his kennel. He's a medium sized guy at 34 pounds.

Tom Tom can be a little tense when meeting other dogs. He does best with female friends and may need to meet any doggie roommates to make sure they are a good match.

Maddy: altered female, 10y11m, 41.6lbs

Maddy came to BARCS on 9/2 after being found tied up outside Hanover Street. Despite everything she has been through, Maddy was friendly with everyone she met, eagerly accepted treats, and was incredibly thirsty upon arrival. No aggression was noted.

This elderly girl is in heartbreaking condition. Maddy is severely underweight and emaciated, with significant muscle loss, especially in her hind legs. She is suffering from severe, longstanding skin disease that has caused extensive hair loss and discomfort, along with a heavy flea infestation. Years of untreated ear infections have left her left ear permanently thickened and deformed. She also has a significant underbite and a heart murmur that will require further evaluation.

Maddy has difficulty walking comfortably and shows signs of chronic disease in her rear legs, particularly her left knee, suggesting arthritis or other long-term orthopedic issues. Her nails are overgrown, and her overall condition suggests she has gone without consistent veterinary care for quite some time.

Maddy’s condition reflects a lifetime of neglect, but she remains gentle, resilient, and eager for human attention. She needs a rescue partner willing to provide the medical care, diagnostics, nutritional support, and comfort this senior dog deserves. After everything she has endured, Maddy deserves the opportunity to spend her golden years surrounded by kindness and care.

Meet Queenie! This sweet, social girl came to BARCS through no fault of her own. She previously lived with other dogs, including a Yorkie, and has also done well around children. At the shelter, Queenie has been cuddly, affectionate, and laid-back. She is easy to leash and enjoys leisurely walks with her friends. Queenie is a great snuggler and wants to be as close as she can to you. She even plops down and rolls over for belly rubs. More info will be added soon.

Saguaro loves treats, and likes to take a break along the way for some pets and scratches. He weighs in at a lanky 67 pounds.

Chino: altered female, 11y9m, 15.18lbs

Chino was owner surrendered to BARCS on 8/27 when her owner was moving and unable to take her along. After spending years in a home, this sweet senior is now adjusting to a completely new world.

Her previous owner describes her as calm and cuddly, and that’s exactly the impression Chino gives. She is a gentle girl who enjoys affection and would love nothing more than a comfortable home where she can relax and spend her golden years.

Chino is currently obese and would benefit from a weight loss plan in her next home to help keep her comfortable and healthy as she ages. With proper diet, exercise, and routine veterinary care, she has the potential to feel much better.

After losing the only home she has known, Chino is looking for someone willing to give her the stability and love she deserves. She would love a quiet place to settle in, soak up affection, and enjoy all the comforts of home once again.

Fostering is a way to save a life & bring more love home!

Fostering a pet is often more rewarding than you can even imagine. YOU save the life by offering a loving place for a sweet dog or cat to live until they find their furever home. They are great companions and we are told so many times that the dog/cat KNOWS that you are their lifesaver and is so grateful.

Fostering is a way to a healthier lifestyle for you...
Someone to walk, someone to talk to, someone to watch TV with, someone to relax with on the couch… the list goes on. While fostering saves the dog’s/cat’s life, it could save YOURS TOO!

Almost ALL Rescues
Pay all the expenses for the dog or cat that you foster. It is a great way to find someone who may fit into your family with a trial run. If you fall in love with the dog or cat that you are fostering, then you have first dibs on adopting!

Charlie is a group of volunteers devoted to animal welfare who care desperately for homeless dogs and cats. We advocate for shelters and rescues and work to connect them to people who want to foster/adopt to save a life. People who can offer these beautiful souls a place to live with love and kindness. Dream is a 9-year-old, spayed female bully breed who has spent far too long waiting—75 days—in a shelter kennel. At her age, she should be resting comfortably in a home, enjoying quiet walks, soft beds, and the simple comfort of being someone’s beloved companion.

Instead, the shelter environment is becoming increasingly hard on her. Dream has arthritis that is worsening in the kennel setting, and our veterinarian suspects she may also have a partial cruciate tear in her right rear leg. She is currently 78 pounds and is on a veterinarian-guided weight-loss program to help reduce stress on her joints and support her mobility.

Dream has been a big focus of our Doggy Day Out program and truly enjoys meeting new people. She is happiest when she gets out of the shelter, explores the world, and has someone’s full attention. She has so much love and personality to share with her people.

Dream does not enjoy the company of other dogs and becomes immediately defensive and reactive around them. She will need placement as the only dog, with a rescue or foster who can provide a quiet, dog-free environment and help her feel safe.
Please help us give Dream the ending she deserves. After 75 days in a kennel, this sweet senior girl deserves more than shelter life—she deserves a warm bed, gentle care, and a person or rescue willing to let her finally just be a dog again.

Lemur Needs Rescue
13 Years, 11lbs
Meet Lemur, a 13-year-old Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix in need of rescue. Brought into our care as a stray, very little is known about Lemur’s past. However, during her time with us and in foster care, we have gotten to know this sweet senior and learned more about her medical needs and wonderful personality.

At intake, Lemur was found to have a large abdominal mass and suspected dental disease. Further evaluation revealed that the mass was actually a large inguinal hernia, which we were able to repair. She was also found to have several loose and fractured teeth that will require extraction, as well as fused L2 and L3 vertebrae.

Unfortunately, during a routine veterinary recheck, Lemur was found to have developed a secondary hernia that will also require surgical repair. She also has a small mass on her right thigh and a grade 3/6 heart murmur. Her bloodwork showed a normal proBNP, though additional cardiac follow-up may be recommended. At this time, Lemur still needs her secondary hernia repaired, her thigh mass removed, and her dental treatment completed.

Despite all that she has been through, Lemur has remained a calm and affectionate companion. Her foster parent reports that she enjoys spending time with the younger child in the home and has been a wonderful houseguest.

Lemur has certainly had a difficult journey, but we believe she deserves the chance to spend her golden years comfortable, loved, and receiving the care she needs. We are hoping to find a dedicated rescue willing to take on her medical needs and give this sweet senior the second chance she deserves.

Still no one for Pickles! He needs to move by the weekend!!

Echo is in need of a new foster placement for Pickles. Pickles is a little over 2, recently neutured, up to date on his shots and house broken. He is shy around strangers but does warm up. Children make him very nervous so he would need to be in a home without them. He loves to play ball, knows basic commands and has a recall. Pickles is curious but a bit scared of the resident cat. Sunny Side Up - unaltered female, 1m4d, 1.04lbs

Sunny Side Up came to the shelter as a stray on 9/1 and is currently dealing with an upper respiratory infection, essentially a kitty cold that can cause symptoms like congestion, sneezing, and discharge. Being sick while also adjusting to the stress and unfamiliar surroundings of a shelter can be especially difficult for a cat.

The encouraging news is that Sunny Side Up is eating and drinking on her own, which is a very positive sign. She is still in need of a calm, comfortable environment where she can rest, recover, and receive the care and monitoring she needs while she gets back on her feet.

With some time, supportive care, and a comfortable place to rest, we are hopeful this sweet girl can get through her illness and move on to the safe, loving home she deserves.

Meet Potpourri, a delightful 1-year-old sweetheart weighing 47.6 pounds. She's a happy gal who likes to keep herself busy sniffing around and exploring the grounds. She confidently led the way on her walk but wasn't really pulling. She likes treats and gets really smiley and engaged for them. She knows "sit," though she may take a few tries before she decides to show you.

Potpourri's favorite activity? ZOOMIES! She races around the play yard with carefree enthusiasm, her joyful energy guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Meet Reese! This active, affectionate, beautiful brindle girl came to the shelter through no fault of her own. She is housetrained and loves playing, snuggling, going for walks, and watching the world through the window. She has lived with children of various ages and does well when left home alone.

At the shelter this lovely lady can be a bit shy when meeting new people. She's a big girl at 83 pounds, and walks slowly and easily on the leash. She would do well with a patient adopter who gives her time to get comfortable. When outside, she loves to take her time, sniff all the smells and explore.

Reese may need to meet any doggie roommates to make sure they are a good match. She is playful with her pals and prefers polite playmates. She has interacted nicely with small breed dogs.
