Sometimes one shared resource is exactly what another educator was looking for.

Here’s to new beginnings, welcoming classrooms, curious learners, and a wonderful school year ahead.

This article argues that schools have quietly evolved from institutions primarily focused on academic learning into society's default response to many of the complex social challenges facing children. Over the past two decades, responsibilities such as mental health, nutrition, poverty, behaviour support, healthcare coordination, digital citizenship, financial literacy, climate education, and diversity and inclusion have all been added to schools' mandates - often without additional instructional time or the removal of existing expectations. Drawing on educational experience and research from the OECD and UNICEF, the author contends that the issue is not whether these responsibilities belong in schools, but whether schools alone can realistically meet society's growing expectations within finite time and resources. The article concludes that while schools should continue playing a vital role in supporting children, their success depends on a renewed partnership in which families, governments, healthcare systems, community organizations, and society as a whole share responsibility for raising the next generation.

How schools quietly became society’s default solution to every social problem.

If someone had described today’s teaching profession to me twenty years ago, I don’t think I would have believed them.

When I entered education, I expected to teach mathematics and science. I imagined designing engaging lessons, helping students solve challenging problems, coaching them through difficult concepts, and watching their confidence grow as they discovered what they were capable of accomplishing. Like most educators, I understood that teaching involved much more than simply delivering curriculum. Building relationships, encouraging character, and supporting students as they developed into young adults had always been part of the profession.

What I never imagined was how dramatically the role of schools would expand.

After ten years as a high school Math and Science teacher, followed by opportunities to work at the system level within one of Canada’s largest school districts and later as both an elementary and secondary school administrator, I have had the privilege of viewing education through multiple lenses. I have worked alongside hundreds of remarkable educators who continually adapt to meet the changing needs of their students. If there is one characteristic that defines teachers, it is their willingness to help. Ask them to support children, and their answer is almost always yes.

Perhaps that willingness has become both education’s greatest strength and its greatest vulnerability.

Over the past two decades, schools have quietly become society’s default solution to nearly every social challenge affecting children and adolescents. Whenever a new issue emerges, whether it involves mental health, online safety, financial literacy, artificial intelligence, nutrition, climate change, diversity and inclusion, vaping, substance use, bullying, healthy relationships, or digital citizenship, the response is remarkably predictable.

Someone asks, “Should schools teach this?”

The answer is almost always yes.

Rarely does anyone ask the second question.

“What should schools stop teaching to make room?”

That conversation almost never happens.

Instead, each new priority is carefully layered onto an already full curriculum, with the assumption that schools will somehow find the time. Teachers attend new professional development sessions. Curriculum documents are revised. Expectations are added. Resources are developed. Assemblies are scheduled. Awareness weeks are introduced. New reporting requirements appear. School improvement plans expand. Another important responsibility quietly becomes part of a teacher’s job description.

The school day, however, remains exactly the same.

This article is not an argument against mental health education.

It is not an argument against financial literacy.

It is not an argument against diversity, equity, and inclusion.

It is not an argument against climate education, digital citizenship, online safety, or any of the countless initiatives that have found a home within our schools.

In fact, I believe every one of these topics is important.

That is precisely what makes this conversation so difficult.

The issue is not whether these topics deserve attention. They absolutely do. The issue is whether schools can realistically become responsible for addressing every major social challenge while simultaneously improving literacy, numeracy, graduation rates, student achievement, attendance, well-being, and countless other performance measures - all within the same number of instructional hours.

There is an uncomfortable truth that few people outside education fully appreciate.

Time is the one resource schools cannot create.

According to the OECD, Canadian students receive approximately 921 hours of compulsory instruction each year in primary school and 924 hours in lower secondary school, placing Canada above the OECD average for instructional time. Despite this relatively generous instructional schedule, the number of responsibilities assigned to schools has continued to grow far faster than the number of hours available to address them. Imagine asking an architect to build a house without increasing the budget, a surgeon to perform additional procedures without extending operating time, or an airline pilot to add more passengers without enlarging the aircraft. At some point, capacity matters. Yet education has largely ignored this simple reality. Rather than asking what should be removed when something new is added, we have grown accustomed to believing schools can simply do more.

Teachers, true to their nature, rarely refuse.

They adapt.

They innovate.

They work longer hours.

They spend evenings planning and weekends preparing.

They squeeze one more lesson into an already crowded timetable.

They find time that doesn’t really exist.

From the outside, this remarkable adaptability can create the illusion that the system is coping.

From the inside, many educators know otherwise.

The modern classroom is no longer solely a place where children learn to read, write, solve equations, conduct scientific investigations, and explore history. It has become a centre for mental health support, nutrition programs, technology education, conflict resolution, trauma-informed practice, career exploration, environmental stewardship, financial literacy, and social development. Each of these responsibilities serves an important purpose. Together, however, they represent a profound transformation in what society expects schools to accomplish.

The question is no longer whether schools should help children navigate these challenges.

Of course they should.

The question is whether schools have quietly become responsible for solving problems that once belonged to all of us.

Because if every societal challenge ultimately becomes a school responsibility, we must ask ourselves one final question.

Who is still sharing the load?

This transformation has occurred during a period when children’s lives have become increasingly complex. According to UNICEF’s 2025 Report Card on Child Well-Being, Canada now ranks 19th out of 36 high-income countries for child well-being. The report also found that Canadian children are less happy than they were a decade ago, while one in five reports experiencing frequent bullying and one in five reports feeling lonely at school. These are not isolated educational issues - they are societal issues that increasingly arrive at the schoolhouse door. (Unicef)

The Expanding Job Description of Teachers

This is where I want to be very clear.

This article is not about suggesting that schools should stop caring about children’s mental health. It is not about arguing against financial literacy, climate education, diversity and inclusion, online safety, or any of the countless initiatives that have found their way into classrooms over the past two decades.

Every one of these issues matters.

If anything, they matter more today than ever before.

The challenge is not deciding whether they are important. The challenge is recognizing that every new responsibility comes with an invisible cost that few people ever discuss.

That cost is time.

Education is unlike almost any other profession. When a hospital introduces a new surgical procedure, additional training, equipment, and resources are often required. When a business launches a new product line, it hires staff, expands production, or adjusts its priorities. Yet when society identifies another challenge affecting children, we rarely ask what additional capacity schools will need. We simply ask educators to find room.

And they do.

Teachers are remarkably adaptable professionals. They reorganize lessons, modify assessments, shorten activities, give up preparation periods, work through lunch, answer emails late into the evening, and spend weekends preparing resources. They have become masters at finding time where none appears to exist.

The danger is that this adaptability creates the illusion that there is still room for more.

There isn’t.

Instead, schools have quietly become the place where society sends its most complex problems - not because educators caused those problems, but because schools remain one of the few institutions that reaches nearly every child, every day.

It is difficult to think of another public institution that has experienced such a dramatic expansion of responsibilities over such a short period of time.

Let’s consider just a few examples.

Schools Became Mental Health Centres

If there is one area that has transformed education more than any other, it is mental health.

When I first entered teaching, conversations about student well-being certainly existed, but they rarely occupied the centre of educational policy. Today, mental health has rightly become one of education’s highest priorities. Schools employ social workers, psychologists, child and youth workers, and wellness teams. Professional development increasingly focuses on anxiety, emotional regulation, trauma-informed practice, suicide awareness, and resilience. Teachers are encouraged to recognize warning signs, build emotionally safe classrooms, support students experiencing distress, and connect families with appropriate services.

This evolution did not happen by accident.

Young people genuinely need more support.

The data are difficult to ignore. The OECD reports that youth mental health has been declining across many developed nations for more than a decade, with the trend worsening after COVID-19. Researchers point not to one single cause, but to a convergence of factors including academic pressure, social media, cyberbullying, economic uncertainty, family stress, and climate anxiety. The OECD reports that approximately six in ten young people express serious concern about climate change, highlighting why environmental education has become increasingly central to schools. Climate education is no longer simply about science; it is also about helping students understand uncertainty, resilience, and informed civic engagement. (OECD)

The OECD also emphasizes that improving youth mental health requires a coordinated response across healthcare, families, communities, and governments - not schools acting alone. (OECD)

UNICEF reports that one in five Canadian children experiences frequent bullying, while the OECD notes that students who experience frequent bullying are more than three times as likely to develop depression or suicidal thoughts later in adolescence. Cyberbullying adds another layer of complexity because it follows students home, extends beyond the school day, and often occurs anonymously. (UNICEF)

In many ways, schools have become the front line of this challenge.

A teacher may begin a mathematics lesson only to discover that one student experienced a panic attack the night before, another has not slept because of family conflict, another is grieving the loss of a grandparent, while another quietly struggles with anxiety severe enough that completing independent work feels overwhelming.

No curriculum document can prepare an educator for moments like these.

Nor should we expect teachers to ignore them.

Good teachers never have.

Children cannot simply leave their emotional lives at the classroom door.

The best educators understand that learning and well-being are deeply connected.

Yet supporting mental health requires something incredibly valuable.

Time.

Sometimes it means pausing a lesson because a student needs to talk.

Sometimes it means facilitating restorative conversations after conflict.

Sometimes it means collaborating with guidance counsellors, administrators, families, psychologists, or community agencies.

Sometimes it means rewriting an assessment because a student simply isn’t ready.

These moments matter.

In fact, they may be among the most important moments in a child’s education.

But they also occupy instructional time that must come from somewhere.

Teachers willingly make that choice because children come first.

The question is not whether they should.

The question is how many additional responsibilities can continue to be layered onto classrooms before something inevitably gives way.

Schools Became Nutrition Programs

One of the most profound shifts in education has occurred quietly.

For many children, school is no longer simply the place where they learn.

It is also the place where they eat.

Rising housing costs, inflation, and affordability pressures have left more Canadian families struggling to meet basic needs. Schools increasingly find themselves coordinating clothing drives, connecting families with community resources, and quietly helping children whose needs extend far beyond academics. The classroom has become one of the first places where poverty becomes visible - not because schools created it, but because they see children every day. (foodbankscanada)

The reality facing many Canadian families has changed dramatically.

In March 2025 alone, Canadian food banks recorded nearly 2.2 million visits - the highest monthly total ever recorded in the country’s history. Food bank usage has nearly doubled since 2019, and approximately 712,000 of those visits were made by children. Even more striking, almost one in five food bank users is employed, reminding us that hunger is no longer simply a consequence of unemployment but increasingly of affordability.(foodbankscanada)

Those numbers are not simply statistics.

They represent children walking into classrooms every morning.

Teachers see them.

They notice the student who asks for a second breakfast.

They notice the child saving part of lunch for later.

They quietly keep granola bars in desk drawers, fruit in classroom refrigerators, and snacks in cupboards - not because anyone required them to, but because experience has taught them that a hungry child struggles to focus, participate, and learn.

Recognizing this growing need, the Government of Canada launched a National School Food Program, investing $1 billion over five years to expand nutritious meal programs and reach hundreds of thousands of additional students. The policy acknowledges what educators have known for years: school nutrition programs improve student well-being, support attendance, and help children learn.

This is unquestionably a positive investment.

No child should have to learn on an empty stomach.

Yet it also illustrates a broader pattern.

Schools have increasingly become responsible for addressing challenges that originate well beyond the classroom.

Teachers now help coordinate breakfast programs, connect families with community resources, identify food insecurity, and support initiatives that previous generations may never have associated with education.

Again, none of this is a criticism.

If a child is hungry, every caring educator wants to help.

The concern is not that schools are responding.

The concern is that society increasingly assumes schools will respond first.

When did feeding children become primarily a school responsibility rather than a shared societal one?

That question is worth asking - not because schools should do less, but because no institution can continually expand its responsibilities without eventually reaching its limits.

Schools Became Social Service Agencies

Not every student arrives at school carrying a backpack filled only with textbooks and binders.

Some carry hunger.

Some carry grief.

Some carry anxiety.

Others carry responsibilities that no child should ever have to shoulder.

For generations, educators have understood that children bring their lives into the classroom. What has changed is the sheer complexity and frequency of the challenges schools are now expected to address. Increasingly, teachers find themselves helping families navigate housing insecurity, connecting parents with food programs, arranging winter clothing, supporting newcomers, coordinating with community agencies, and ensuring students have access to basic necessities before learning can even begin.

In many schools, these efforts happen quietly.

There is no announcement over the morning announcements that a child received a warm winter coat before recess.

No newsletter celebrates the teacher who discreetly purchased school supplies for a student whose family simply could not afford them.

No report card documents the countless phone calls made to connect families with social workers, housing supports, counselling services, or food banks.

Yet these moments occur every day in schools across Canada.

The reality is that poverty does not stop at the school doors.

According to the 2023 Canadian Income Survey, approximately 802,000 Canadian children were living below the poverty line, while nearly one in three children experienced some level of food insecurity. These are not abstract national statistics. They represent students sitting in classrooms every day, often beside peers whose experiences look dramatically different.

Teachers cannot solve poverty.

But they see its effects.

They see students arriving tired because housing is unstable.

They see children wearing shoes that no longer fit.

They notice lunches becoming smaller.

They recognize when behaviour changes because stress has entered a household.

Increasingly, schools have become the first place where these needs are identified - not because they created them, but because schools remain one of the few institutions that interact with nearly every child every weekday.

This is one of education’s greatest strengths.

It is also one of its greatest burdens.

Schools Became Behaviour Specialists

If there is one area that has changed dramatically since I first entered education, it is how we understand student behaviour.

Years ago, behaviour was often viewed primarily through the lens of discipline. Students who disrupted learning received consequences intended to correct the behaviour.

Today, educators ask a different question.

Instead of asking,

“What’s wrong with this student?”

we increasingly ask,

“What happened to this student?”

That shift represents tremendous progress.

Research has helped us understand that behaviour is often a form of communication. Children experiencing trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, developmental differences, or significant adversity frequently express those experiences through behaviour long before they have the language to explain them.

Schools have responded by embracing trauma-informed practices, restorative approaches, self-regulation strategies, positive behaviour interventions, and social-emotional learning.

These approaches are changing lives.

A student who once would have been viewed simply as “defiant” may instead receive emotional supports.

A child experiencing chronic stress may now be met with empathy rather than punishment.

Relationships have become just as important as rules.

This evolution reflects the very best of education.

Yet it also requires something previous generations of teachers rarely had to provide on the same scale.

Time.

Building relationships takes time.

Restorative conversations take time.

Helping students regulate emotions takes time.

Meeting with families takes time.

Collaborating with psychologists, social workers, child and youth workers, and special education teams takes time.

None of these responsibilities appear on a standardized test.

Yet many educators would argue they are among the most important work they do.

The challenge is that while expectations surrounding behaviour support have evolved dramatically, the school day has not.

Teachers continue balancing increasingly complex behavioural needs while simultaneously delivering curriculum, assessing learning, communicating with families, and supporting every other student in the classroom.

It is an extraordinary balancing act.

Schools Became Healthcare Partners

Walk into almost any school today and you will quickly discover that educators are supporting far more than academic learning.

Schools now manage complex medical needs that would have been difficult to imagine a generation ago.

Teachers and administrators routinely coordinate care plans for students with diabetes, epilepsy, severe allergies, asthma, autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, and a growing range of physical and mental health needs. They participate in concussion management, monitor medication protocols, respond to seizures, implement life-threatening allergy plans, and work alongside healthcare professionals to ensure students remain safe throughout the school day.

None of these responsibilities are optional.

Nor should they be.

Every child deserves access to education regardless of medical need.

What has changed is not whether schools care.

It is the breadth of responsibilities they now carry.

Parents trust schools with the health and safety of their children for nearly seven hours each day.

That trust is both humbling and significant.

But it also illustrates how dramatically the role of schools has expanded beyond academics.

In many ways, schools have become extensions of Canada’s healthcare and social service systems.

Again, this is not a criticism.

It is simply an observation.

When another sector struggles to meet growing demand, schools often become the place where those needs surface first.

Teachers are not physicians.

Principals are not psychologists.

Educational assistants are not nurses.

Yet together they increasingly find themselves coordinating with each of those professions every single day.

A Pattern Begins to Emerge

By this point, a pattern becomes difficult to ignore.

Mental health.

Nutrition.

Poverty.

Trauma.

Behaviour.

Healthcare.

Each responsibility was added for a good reason.

Each addresses a genuine need.

Each reflects society’s desire to better support children.

Individually, none of these initiatives seem unreasonable.

Collectively, however, they reveal something much larger.

Schools have quietly become the institution society turns to whenever children need help.

Perhaps that is because schools are one of the few places every child can still be reached consistently.

Perhaps it is because educators have earned an extraordinary level of public trust.

Or perhaps it is because teachers rarely say no when children need them.

Whatever the reason, one thing is becoming increasingly clear.

Schools are no longer being asked simply to educate children.

They are being asked to hold together many of the systems that support childhood itself.

And we have not yet stopped to ask whether that responsibility was ever meant to belong to schools alone.

Schools Became Digital Parenting Centres

Perhaps no responsibility illustrates the changing role of schools more clearly than technology.

When I began teaching, classroom conversations about technology were relatively straightforward. We discussed how to evaluate websites, use presentation software, and conduct effective online research. Cell phones were often distractions to be managed rather than powerful devices that shaped nearly every aspect of students’ lives.

Today, the conversation is entirely different.

Students carry in their pockets more computing power than the computers that helped send astronauts to the moon. Before arriving at school each morning, many have already scrolled through social media feeds, watched videos generated by algorithms, exchanged dozens of messages, consumed news from around the world, and interacted with artificial intelligence tools that did not exist only a few years ago.

Technology is no longer simply a classroom resource.

It has become the environment in which childhood unfolds.

Not surprisingly, schools have adapted.

Teachers are now expected to teach students how to identify misinformation, protect their privacy online, recognize scams, respond appropriately to cyberbullying, understand digital footprints, evaluate the credibility of online sources, use artificial intelligence ethically, respect copyright, communicate responsibly on social media, and become thoughtful digital citizens.

Each of these lessons is essential.

Children deserve to understand the digital world they are inheriting.

But it is worth pausing to recognize just how remarkable this shift has been.

Twenty years ago, few people would have imagined asking schools to explain social media etiquette because social media barely existed. No one expected teachers to discuss deepfakes, artificial intelligence, online radicalization, phishing attempts, or algorithmic bias. Yet today, these conversations are becoming as common as lessons on fractions or persuasive writing.

The pace of technological change ensures that educators are constantly learning alongside their students. By the time curriculum documents are revised, new platforms, applications, and technologies have often emerged. Teachers continually update lessons not because curriculum requires it, but because students need guidance navigating a digital landscape that evolves almost daily.

This work matters enormously.

But it also raises an important question.

When did schools become responsible for teaching children how to use technologies that many adults themselves are still trying to understand?

Schools Became Financial Literacy Coaches

Financial literacy offers another fascinating example of how society’s expectations have changed.

Ask almost any adult what they wish they had learned in school, and financial literacy frequently appears near the top of the list. Many people graduate knowing how to solve quadratic equations or analyze Shakespeare while feeling unprepared to create a budget, understand credit cards, evaluate loans, save for retirement, or recognize the long-term consequences of financial decisions.

Recognizing this gap, provinces across Canada have expanded financial literacy expectations within their curricula.

In Ontario, financial literacy is now intentionally embedded across multiple grades and subject areas. Students explore budgeting, saving, responsible spending, investing, consumer awareness, and informed financial decision-making. These are practical skills that can positively influence every stage of adult life.

This is a welcome addition to education.

Preparing students for life after graduation has always been part of a school’s mission, and financial literacy strengthens that mission.

Yet it also illustrates the broader pattern this article has explored.

Society identified an important life skill.

Schools responded.

Curriculum expanded.

No corresponding reduction occurred elsewhere.

No one suggested removing an existing expectation to create space for these valuable new lessons.

Instead, teachers were asked to incorporate another meaningful responsibility into an already crowded school year.

Again, the issue is not whether financial literacy belongs in schools.

It absolutely does.

The issue is whether we continue believing that every worthwhile addition can simply fit into the same finite amount of instructional time.

Schools Became Climate Educators

Few issues will shape today’s students more profoundly than climate change.

Young people are increasingly aware that environmental challenges will influence their futures. They see images of wildfires, floods, droughts, extreme weather events, and changing ecosystems with unprecedented frequency. Unsurprisingly, concern about the environment has become a defining characteristic of this generation.

The OECD has highlighted growing climate-related anxiety among young people, noting that environmental concerns now influence many students’ overall well-being. At the same time, education systems around the world have responded by expanding learning related to sustainability, environmental stewardship, renewable energy, biodiversity, and responsible citizenship.

This is education at its best.

Schools should help students understand complex global challenges and empower them to become thoughtful problem-solvers rather than passive observers.

Meaningful climate education, however, cannot simply consist of a single presentation during Earth Week.

It requires inquiry.

Discussion.

Scientific investigation.

Critical thinking.

Problem solving.

Cross-curricular connections.

Community action.

All of those experiences require time.

Once again, schools have accepted an important responsibility because it benefits students.

Yet another layer has been added without expanding the school day.

Schools Became Leaders in Diversity, Equity, and Belonging

One of the most positive developments in education has been the growing emphasis on ensuring every student feels welcomed, respected, and represented.

Today’s classrooms are more diverse than ever before. Students arrive with different cultures, languages, identities, abilities, beliefs, and lived experiences. Schools have appropriately recognized that creating inclusive learning environments is not an optional initiative - it is fundamental to student success.

Research consistently demonstrates that students learn more effectively when they experience a sense of belonging. They participate more confidently, take greater academic risks, and build stronger relationships with peers and teachers.

As a result, educators now facilitate conversations about inclusion, accessibility, equity, Indigenous perspectives, human rights, reconciliation, empathy, and respect for diversity throughout the curriculum.

These conversations matter deeply.

They help students understand one another.

They prepare young people for increasingly diverse workplaces and communities.

They strengthen democracy itself.

But meaningful conversations about identity, belonging, and inclusion cannot be rushed.

They require trust.

They require listening.

They require reflection.

They require skilled educators willing to facilitate respectful dialogue around topics that are often nuanced and emotionally complex.

These are among the most valuable conversations taking place in schools today.

They are also among the most time-intensive.

The List Continues to Grow

What is striking is not that schools have embraced these responsibilities.

It is how quickly the list continues to grow.

Artificial intelligence.

Media literacy.

Online safety.

Financial literacy.

Climate education.

Diversity and belonging.

Entrepreneurship.

Career readiness.

Coding.

Cybersecurity.

Healthy relationships.

Consent.

Substance awareness.

Vaping prevention.

Executive functioning.

The list grows longer almost every year.

No one would argue these topics lack importance.

In fact, their importance is precisely why schools continue saying yes.

Educators understand that preparing students for the future requires far more than teaching traditional academic subjects.

The concern is not the value of these initiatives.

The concern is cumulative capacity.

Each addition is entirely reasonable on its own.

Together, however, they create an expectation unlike that placed on any previous generation of schools.

We have asked schools not only to educate children, but increasingly to prepare them for every social, technological, economic, environmental, and personal challenge they may encounter throughout their lives.

That is an extraordinary expectation.

And it leads us to perhaps the most important question of all.

Has anyone stopped to calculate whether the math actually works?

The Math Doesn’t Add Up

As a mathematics teacher, I have always appreciated the certainty of numbers.

Equations are wonderfully honest. They reveal whether something works. They expose assumptions. They refuse to bend to optimism alone. No matter how passionately we may wish for a different answer, mathematics ultimately requires balance.

Perhaps that is why I have come to believe that the greatest challenge facing education today is, at its core, a math problem.

Not a Grade 9 algebra problem.

Not a calculus problem.

A capacity problem.

For decades, society has continued asking schools to take on additional responsibilities. Every request has been reasonable. Every initiative has been well intentioned. Every new expectation has been introduced because someone recognized a genuine need affecting children.

Teach financial literacy.

Support mental health.

Address bullying.

Prevent cyberbullying.

Respond to trauma.

Promote diversity and inclusion.

Teach digital citizenship.

Prepare students for artificial intelligence.

Support climate education.

Provide nutrition.

Develop executive functioning.

Promote healthy relationships.

Teach consent.

Address substance use.

Support career readiness.

Strengthen media literacy.

Prepare globally competent citizens.

Each initiative makes sense.

Each deserves attention.

Yet there is one question we almost never ask.

What should schools stop doing?

That question is often uncomfortable because the honest answer is equally uncomfortable.

We don’t want schools to stop doing anything.

We simply want them to do more.

And more.

And then a little more.

Eventually, however, mathematics catches up with us.

According to the OECD, Canadian students already receive 921 hours of compulsory instruction each year in primary school and 924 hours in lower secondary school - both above the OECD average. In other words, Canadian schools are not operating with unusually short instructional days. The issue is not the quantity of instructional time available. It is the number of expectations we continue asking those hours to contain. (OECD)

The challenge is not necessarily the number of hours.

It is what we expect those hours to accomplish.

Within those same instructional hours, teachers are expected to deliver increasingly rigorous curriculum, differentiate instruction for learners with widely varying needs, assess learning, provide descriptive feedback, communicate with families, collaborate with colleagues, participate in professional learning, supervise students, support mental health, implement behaviour plans, teach life skills, respond to crises, and somehow create engaging learning experiences that inspire curiosity and creativity.

No other public institution has seen its mandate expand so dramatically while its core resource - time - has remained virtually unchanged.

Imagine asking physicians to double the number of services they provide without extending appointments.

Imagine asking firefighters to prevent floods, educate communities, inspect buildings, conduct emergency medical care, and continue responding to fires without increasing staffing or hours.

Imagine asking airline pilots to carry twice as many passengers without enlarging the aircraft.

Eventually, capacity becomes impossible to ignore.

Education is no different.

Teachers have managed this impossible equation for years through extraordinary professionalism. They arrive early. They stay late. They answer emails after dinner. They plan on weekends. They coach sports, supervise clubs, organize food drives, mentor struggling students, comfort grieving families, and somehow return the next morning ready to do it all again.

Their dedication has unintentionally hidden the problem.

Because teachers continue making it work, many assume the system still has room.

But making something work is not the same as making it sustainable.

There is a profound difference between resilience and unlimited capacity.

Teachers possess remarkable resilience.

They do not possess unlimited time.

A Shared Responsibility

Perhaps the greatest misconception about this conversation is that acknowledging schools cannot do everything somehow means believing schools should do less.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Schools should absolutely continue supporting children’s mental health.

Schools should absolutely help students become financially literate.

Schools should absolutely teach digital citizenship, environmental stewardship, healthy relationships, empathy, and respect for diversity.

These are not distractions from education.

They are part of preparing thoughtful, capable citizens.

The question is not whether these responsibilities belong in schools.

The question is whether they belong only in schools.

Somewhere along the way, society began treating schools as the institution of first resort for nearly every challenge affecting children.

When rates of anxiety increased, schools responded.

When cyberbullying emerged, schools responded.

When financial literacy became a concern, schools responded.

When children arrived hungry, schools responded.

When social media transformed adolescence, schools responded.

When artificial intelligence changed learning, schools responded.

Every time society asked, educators answered.

Perhaps because that is what educators have always done.

But children do not belong only to schools.

They belong to families.

To communities.

To neighbourhoods.

To healthcare systems.

To governments.

To employers.

To technology companies.

To faith communities.

To recreation programs.

To all of us.

Raising healthy, compassionate, resilient young people has never been the responsibility of one institution alone.

Nor should it become one.

Schools are extraordinary partners.

They should not be expected to become the sole solution.

What Success Should Really Look Like

If we truly want to strengthen education, perhaps we need to change the questions we ask.

Instead of asking,

“What else can schools teach?”

perhaps we should begin asking,

“Who else should be helping?”

Instead of asking,

“Can teachers fit one more initiative into the school year?”

perhaps we should ask,

“What supports do teachers need in order to do this well?”

Instead of measuring commitment by how much schools are willing to absorb, perhaps we should begin measuring success by how effectively society works together to support children.

Imagine what education could become if schools were not continually expected to compensate for every gap elsewhere.

Imagine classrooms where teachers had more uninterrupted time for deep learning, meaningful discussion, scientific investigation, creative writing, mathematical problem solving, artistic expression, and the simple joy of helping students discover something new.

Imagine communities where mental health services, youth recreation, family supports, healthcare, nutrition programs, technology companies, and schools worked as equal partners rather than relying on classrooms to carry the greatest share of the load.

That vision does not diminish schools.

It strengthens them.

One Final Thought

The challenges facing children today are real. Canada’s ranking of 19th out of 36 wealthy nations for child well-being should concern every Canadian - not simply educators. If children’s lives have become more complicated, it should not surprise us that schools have become more complicated too. (UNICEF)

After more than a decade as a teacher, followed by experiences supporting schools at the system level and serving as both an elementary and secondary school administrator, I remain profoundly optimistic about education.

Not because the work has become easier.

It hasn’t.

Not because expectations have stopped growing.

They haven’t.

I remain optimistic because I have seen firsthand what teachers accomplish every single day.

I have watched educators comfort children through unimaginable loss before teaching a mathematics lesson.

I have seen teachers quietly place food into backpacks without seeking recognition.

I have watched administrators spend hours connecting families with community supports long after the dismissal bell had rung.

I have seen educational assistants, office staff, custodians, child and youth workers, social workers, psychologists, early childhood educators, and countless others give everything they have because they believe every child deserves to succeed.

Schools have never stopped saying yes.

Perhaps now it is time for the rest of society to say yes alongside them.

Because schools cannot - and should not - carry the future of our children alone.

If this article has a single message, it is not that schools are doing too much.

It is that schools have been asked to carry more than any one institution reasonably can.

The solution is not asking educators to care less.

The solution is ensuring they no longer have to care alone.

Because when we stop expecting schools to solve every problem by themselves, we create something even more powerful:

A society that finally accepts that raising a child has always been - and will always be - a shared responsibility.

Something is shifting in education, and if you are working inside the system, it is hard to ignore. I have spent years across classrooms, system-level consultant and coordinator roles, and school leadership, and while change is nothing new in education, what we are seeing right now feels different. This is not about curriculum updates or post-pandemic recovery. It is about a growing gap between what schools are expected to do and what they are realistically able to deliver, and families are beginning to notice.

At the same time, staffing shortages are becoming part of the daily reality in many schools. In Ontario, more than one quarter of schools report daily teacher shortages, and nearly half report daily shortages of educational assistants. Special education supports, which are essential for many students, are also becoming less consistently available across classrooms. These are not small operational challenges. They directly affect the level of support students receive, the consistency of instruction, and the ability of schools to respond effectively to increasingly complex needs (People for Education).

To keep schools functioning, administrators and educators are constantly adapting. Classes are combined, staff are reassigned, and schools increasingly rely on occasional or emergency coverage. In some cases, this means individuals are stepping into classrooms without full teaching qualifications. This is not a reflection of those individuals, many of whom are doing their best under challenging circumstances, but it does represent a shift in the consistency and stability that parents have historically expected from the system.

Parents may not see the internal staffing reports or funding formulas, but they are noticing the outcomes. They see larger class sizes, reduced support, and less consistency in instruction. More importantly, they notice when their child is not progressing in the way they expect. The question I hear more frequently now is not whether school is good, but whether it is enough. That shift in mindset matters because once families begin to question whether the system is meeting their child’s needs, they start looking for additional support.

This is where we are beginning to see a quiet but important shift. While the majority of students remain in public education, families are increasingly supplementing learning through tutoring, learning centres, online platforms, and hybrid models. Private school enrolment in Canada has also risen for consecutive years, reflecting a broader trend toward exploring alternatives (Statistics Canada). What is most notable is not a mass exit from public education, but a gradual change in behaviour. Families are no longer relying on a single system to meet all of their child’s needs. They are building additional layers of support.

At first glance, Ontario’s projected $30.3 billion in education funding for 2025–26 sounds substantial, and to the average person, it likely does sound like a lot. But the more important question is whether it is enough to meet the realities schools are facing every day. Based on what boards are reporting, the answer appears to be no. Ontario’s own funding model is largely driven by enrolment, with the province projecting average funding of $14,561 per student, but that broad number can mask the strain being felt at the school level. At the same time, more than one quarter of Ontario schools report daily teacher shortages and nearly half report daily shortages of educational assistants, suggesting that the money is not translating into stable staffing or consistent student support across the system (Ministry of Education).

The pressure becomes even more visible when boards begin cutting people, not just programs. In Toronto, for example, the TDSB has said it will eliminate 40 vice-principal positions for the 2026–27 school year, with some schools expected to share administrators, and reporting has also pointed to more than 600 teaching positions being cut. Other boards are also signalling reductions: Halton’s 2025–26 budget included the elimination of 90 staff positions, while Kawartha Pine Ridge said potential staffing cuts were on the table for all employee groups, including teachers, principals, school support staff, and board administration. When vice-principals are not replaced, when teachers are lost, and especially when support staff are reduced, schools do not simply become leaner. They become less responsive, less safe, and less able to meet student needs in real time (CBC News).

That is why the funding figure, on its own, is not enough evidence that the system is healthy. A headline number can sound reassuring, but if boards are cutting administrators, reducing teachers, and losing the very support staff students rely on most, then the concern is real. And once families begin to feel that erosion in day-to-day school life, confidence drops, alternatives become more appealing, and the downward cycle only becomes harder to stop (People for Education).

One of the most challenging aspects of this situation is that public education systems are not designed to respond quickly to these kinds of shifts. They operate within structures that prioritize accountability, equity, and governance. These structures are essential, but they also introduce layers of approval, budget cycles, and policy alignment that slow the pace of change. Even when school and system leaders recognize what needs to be done, they cannot immediately hire additional staff, reallocate funding, or redesign programming. At the same time, smaller and more flexible education models can adapt quickly, offering personalized learning, targeted supports, and direct communication with families. The difference in speed is becoming increasingly visible.

Despite these challenges, I do not believe the answer is to replace public education. It remains one of the most important institutions we have for ensuring access and equity. However, it is clear that the system cannot continue to absorb increasing pressure without additional support. This is where new approaches can play a meaningful role. Rather than waiting for districts to provide support, educators are taking the lead and helping one another directly. This shift has become even more important as many districts have significantly reduced, or nearly eliminated, professional development opportunities due to funding constraints. As an example, teachers are increasingly coming together on global platforms such as Cube For Teachers, sharing free teaching resources to directly support each other to improve student outcomes.

What concerns me most is not the idea of change itself, but the pace at which confidence can shift once it begins. Public education does not typically fail all at once. It weakens gradually as trust erodes. Families begin to supplement, then question, and eventually, in some cases, leave. The longer the gap remains between expectation and reality, the more difficult it becomes to rebuild that trust.

Public education still matters deeply, and it continues to serve the vast majority of students. But the pressures it is facing are real, and the signals we are seeing should not be ignored. If we want to preserve the strength of the system, we need to acknowledge where it is struggling and find ways to support it more effectively. Because once confidence begins to shift, even slightly, it rarely returns on its own.

One of the biggest challenges for FSL teachers is helping students understand why they’re learning French – and why it matters. If you teach French, you’ve probably heard “Why are we doing this?” more than once. Students are far more motivated to participate when they feel like what they’re learning serves a purpose (beyond the classroom). The key to that motivation is using authentic tasks.

When students use French to accomplish something meaningful, their confidence and appreciation for the language grows. Authentic tasks are engaging, motivating, and easy to build into any level of FSL classroom, with any age. If you’re looking for simple ways to bring more authenticity into your projects, these ideas are a great place to start.

1. Plan a weekend.
   Have students plan a day of activities in their town or city, and pitch their perfect day to a partner or small group.
   Extension: Have students plan a day of activities in a French-speaking city, including research on restaurants, cafés, excursions, and local attractions.

2. Give directions around your school (or a city).
   Pairs take turns guiding each other from a starting point to a specific location using only French; this gives them real experience in navigating familiar spaces.
   Extension: Use maps of French-speaking cities and have students navigate from random starting points to pre-set or chosen destinations.

3. Design a café menu.
   Students create simple French menus and take turns ordering and taking orders, using food vocabulary and meaningful questions.
   Extension: Have students design a 5-star restaurant menu and work in small groups to simulate a full dining experience with roles such as customers, servers, managers, and chefs.

4. Plan a class event.
   In small groups, students propose an event for the class (movie day, fundraiser, theme day, etc.) and present their idea. They can create posters, tickets, or any other creative component to “sell” their event. Follow through by letting the class vote and plan the winning idea together.
   Modification: For younger or lower-level learners, provide a list of event options and/or sentence starters to support their presentations.

5. Make a travel brochure.
   Students choose a French-speaking country and highlight interesting facts and activities – this task is always a hit with creative students.
   Extension: Give students a budget and have them plan a full trip including flights, accommodations, transportation, and excursions.

6. Solve a real-life problem.
   Pairs or small groups brainstorm solutions to a school-based issue (ex. “Our school wants to reduce waste”) and present their ideas to the class.
   Extension: Tackle larger community or provincial issues and have students design concrete plans to support their solutions.

7. Prepare for a part-time job interview.
   Students work in pairs to create interview questions and take turns interviewing each other to simulate a real job interview.
   Extension: Have students dress the part and conduct interviews in small groups or in front of the class. Keep questions secret from the interviewee to encourage spontaneous and authentic responses.

All of these activities have built-in modifications and extensions, and can be easily adapted to fit in with different age groups and all levels of French. Authentic tasks don’t have to be complicated, but can always be fun. Even small, purposeful activities and projects can help students see French as a living language that they can use in meaningful ways.
