I moved to Missouri when I was 18. I had tried to make a go of it on my own in North Carolina, but it just didn’t work out. My folks, trying something new themselves, had bought a cattle farm in the Ozarks. So, feeling like I was pretty alone in NC, I followed my parents to Thayer, started college in West Plains, and started down the path of trying to become a “serious” writer.

I had some office space in the sprawling house, a word processor, a copy of Writer’s Market (ordered, along with Skipp and Spector’s Book of the Dead, from the Waldenbooks in Springfield), subscriptions to a bunch of horror zines, and a plentiful supply of self-addressed stamped envelopes.

It all sort of fell apart within a year or so.

My parents, dealing with all sorts of nightmarish issues both personal and financial, lost the house and the land. They parted ways for a while, my mom returning to NC and my dad departing to parts unknown. Having nothing, I found myself couch-surfing for a while. I was working a couple of jobs, Dairy Queen by day, Price Chopper by night, while still going to school full-time. Scraping together a little money, I moved into a rat-, roach-, and slug-infested house in Koshkonong, Missouri. The place had sagging floors, sagging ceilings, and something dead and rotting in the walls. No AC, though, so I had that going for me.

I was kind of miserable.

Somehow, though, it was one of the most creative times of my life. I was writing story after story. Most of them were kind of terrible, yes, but I was putting in the work. Night after night, sitting in that sweltering house, surrounded by rats and roaches and slugs, I rattled away on the keys of that word processor.

Sometimes, I’d sit on the front steps and write on a legal pad.

Sometimes, I’d drive across the state line to Mammoth Springs and wander and watch the falls for inspiration.

“Waste of Life,” “Creeping Stones,” “The Hunt Concluded,” and many other short stories were written while I was living in Koshkonong.

To this day, the memory of that house and those towns and those times still comes through in a lot of my work.

Thayer, Mammoth Springs, and Koshkonong are Spider Creek and Crooked Hills. The house in A Foulness in the Walls is that house. While Harrow County is set in North Carolina, there are definitely pieces of the Ozarks in those pages.

Last week, JimmyZ and I went on a short signing tour that took us through those towns. While I didn’t visit the house and land my parents had bought (I was in Cindy’s car and didn’t want to brave the long dirt road and two creeks I’d have to drive through), I did drive past the old house in Koshkonong. I was excited to see that it has been significantly updated and more updates seem to be ongoing.

Hopefully the vermin found new places to live.

I also stopped at Mammoth Springs to look at the falls one more time.

It was a nice reminder of the old days, of tough days, of days when things looked bleak… and of days when I channeled anything and everything around me into stories.

And those stories helped me get through to the other side.

As mentioned, I just got back from a trip to Jonesboro, Arkansas, and New Orleans, Louisiana. JimmyZ and I did some signings at Bonesy Jonesy’s and Crescent City Comics. We had a helluva time, hung out with great retailers, met some awesome comics fans, saw some sights, and enjoyed some great food and drink.

We spotted this joint on Bourbon Street and, after sazeracs and absinthe and tiki drinks and old fashioneds and hurricanes, JimmyZ thought it was super funny. We didn’t visit, but I would like a HOUSE OF BUNNS neon sign… or at least some stickers… to represent my studio.

Home now, I am looking at several busy, busy, BUSY weeks. There is a LOT of writing to be done. I have a Whiskey and Words event this week. I have recording sessions for The Cullenoscopy. There are also numerous meetings for The Midnight Lantern Foundation. I’m preparing to head to Rose City Comic Con. And I’ve got doctor appointments and house repairs and vet visits on the agenda, too!

If you’ve been paying attention to my newsletter, you’ve likely heard me talk about The Midnight Lantern Foundation a lot in recent months. Earlier this year, we officially launched this 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to help kids and families who are going through difficult times, and we want to do it through the lens of things that have meant so much to us throughout our lives: horror, sci-fi, fantasy, books, comics, games, toys, stories, imagination, and a little bit of weirdness.

Okay.

Maybe a lot of weirdness.

If you’re like us, you know that a great horror novel, a fantasy RPG, a night playing board games, or even a Godzilla toy glowering at you from a shelf can bring you a great deal of happiness, comfort when you need it most, an escape even when times are tough. Books and comics can open the door to reading and creativity. Games can help you find friends. A little fantasy… or whimsy… or even a startling fright can remind you that there is joy to be found… in fantastical worlds and in this one.

We’re intentionally starting small. Our focus has been regional. It will likely remain so for the first few years, but we want to (slowly) expand our reach. We’ve been working behind the scenes, collecting items, talking to potential partners, planning events, and figuring out how we can make the biggest impact with the resources we have. Starting small… though we have big plans.

But we need your help.

There are operating expenses. There are event costs. There are supplies. Most importantly, there are costs associated with collecting, storing, organizing, and distributing donations to the kids and families we’re helping.

That’s happening today.

You know what is shockingly expensive? Replacing an air conditioner. It was more than twice what I expected it to be… and I had been trying to prepare myself for what I thought would be the worst. It’s so costly that I considered just weathering the rest of the summer, getting a couple of box fans, writing in sweltering heat. In the end, though, the responsible thing to do is replace the unit, tighten belts, and… I dunno… cry.

The most bitter spoonful of irony is that it’s very difficult for me to work while repair crews are rattling around in the studio. And if I’m not writing, I’m not earning money. So, not only have I incurred some big expenses, but I will have lost two days of money-making potential.

Thank Leviathan that writing comic books has already made me wealthy beyond my wildest dreams!

Yes, that was sarcasm.

Even though I’ve been distracted from work to some degree, I have accomplished a few things. I’ve been writing scripts for three new comic book series. I’m two issues in on two of them, one issue in on the other. Over the weekend, I outlined additional issues in all the series, and I am hoping to get at least one of them done early this week. I’m going to be traveling, so writing scripts might be difficult, so I might go ahead and outline several more issues.

I finished a screenplay adaptation I’ve been working on. I think it turned out pretty well. I sent it off to the author to see what he thinks. Fingers crossed!

With that off my plate, I’m going to be diving into a new screenplay shortly.

I’ve also started outlining a new novella series, this one a supernatural western. I like where it is going so far.

I met with Jeremy from Outland Entertainment and discussed some upcoming projects, one of which is the next Daemonrot solo. I’ve started outlining that adventure. The other is more of a card game that we’ll likely take our time developing.

No shortage of projects, thankfully.

This week, JimmyZ and I are heading on a short signing trip.

On Wednesday, we will be at Bonesy Jonesy’s in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Then, we’ll be signing in at Crescent City Comics in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Over the weekend, the Midnight Lantern team took a trip to Distant Planet Comics and Collectibles in Columbia, Missouri. Distant Planet is one of my favorite shops, and they are supporting The Midnight Lantern in a big way with a back issue and trade sale. Tim, Greg, and I had a great time at the store, meeting their customers, signing books, and talking about comics and horror and movies.

After the signing, we popped over to Wizards & Witches arcade and Logboat Brewing Company. I played some Darius Burst, Altered Beasts, and Aliens. I sampled a couple of new-to-me beers.

Later, at dinner, I was recognized by another reader who worked at the restaurant. That’s always a good feeling, and I signed a couple of books for her.

Also… Tim and Greg took a quick trip to a nearby record store, and they sent me this pic.

How they managed to get out of the store without buying this is beyond me.

All in all, it was a great trip! Huge thanks to the folks at Distant Planet for making us feel so welcome and supporting the Midnight Lantern in such a big way!

It’s another big, busy, and overwhelming week for me.

My son starts his college journey today, which knocks the wind out of my sails a little. Who am I kidding? To say I’m taking it like a champ would be a lowdown dirty lie. It feels like time has just slipped away so fast. I know he’s going to love it. I know he’s going to do great things. It’s just that, to me, he was just a toddler yesterday.

I’ve got a screenplay to finish this week. It’s an adaptation of a novel. It’s been a great experience translating the author’s work into a new format. Of course, I hope he likes what I’ve done! That’s always nerve wracking.

I have a houseguest coming this week, and the plan is to play Cthulhu Wars one night. That means I’ve gotta dig in the games closet for all the boxes and minis and rule books. I love the game, but it’s a commitment every time you play!

And… it appears the AC in my studio has stopped working… which is not great. I’m calling the AC folks first thing. Hopefully, they can get it up and running without too much hassle… or expense.

This issue is late… and I’m sorry about that. My only excuse is that I’m just… super stressed at the moment… not sleeping well… always tense… depressed… short fuse getting shorter by the second. I honestly didn’t realize it was Tuesday until a few minutes ago. And, so, here we go!

First up… and most importantly… the first issue of Cult-De-Sac comes out this week! TODAY in fact! I know times are tough. I know a lot of folks are tightening the purse strings. Still, this book is awesome, if I do say so myself, and it would mean the world to me if you hopped over to your local comic book shop and grabbed a copy. I want as many eyes on it as possible.

The Hanson family just moved into a new home, and they’re ready to make it all their own. Or so they thought... because in this neighborhood, you don’t want to find yourself on the HOA’s bad side. Unexplainable and terrifying things happen to those who break the rules, and the Hanson family is about to find out what happens when evil hits close to home in Cult-de-Sac!

A few issues ago, I started discussing some changes I need to make in my life. First up, I started a huge decluttering project—getting rid of five unneeded or unwanted items a day, clearing out old Halloween decorations, spending time organizing storage space, even cutting down on my various collections.

So, yes, at a recent gathering of friends, I suggested that I might clear out a huge chunk of my comic book collection. This idea was met with a resounding rebuke. My friends think I’ll be unable to do so. Cindy thinks I’ll regret getting rid of any of my old comics. Maybe they’re right.

My comic book horde isn’t what it used to be. I had an amazing collection when I was younger. I sold it off to pay for some college. What I have now is a sort of half-ass attempt to rebuild, with meager funds, since the mid-nineties. Still, it fills a storage room to capacity and has become shockingly unwieldy over the years.

There are a lot of books in the collection I really love. There are also a lot of books in the collection I don’t think about at all. Pairing down 25 - 50% wouldn’t be so bad, would it? I started thinking of rules for how I would approach this culling of the comic book chaffe.

• There are a few series I’m keeping no matter what. X-Men. Conan. Preacher. Defenders. Most of the X-Men-adjacent books I’ve gathered over the years. There are probably a few others I’d include in that list, but those are the ones that spring to mind most readily. And there’s probably something important in that, leading to…

• If I can’t remember owning it until I pull it out of the box, it might not need to stay.

• Books with sentimental value get special treatment. First comics, signed copies, gifts, comics from creators who changed my perspective on comics or writing, books tied to memories… those stay unless I have a compelling reason otherwise.

• Books that really inspire me. As a writer, books that spark ideas or remind me why I love comics earn their place.

• Doubles… or triples… gotta go.

• If I’m hesitating, it goes into a “revisit in 30 days” pile instead of making an emotional decision on the spot.

It occurs to me that this is less about “too many comics” and more about what deserves a place in my life. When I think about it, going through these books, curating the collection, might get me excited about finishing some small runs of books. I mean, right now I don’t have room for the collection to grow in any significant way.

Now, what do I do with these comics?

That part is easy. I’ll give them to friends who collect. I’ll donate them. I’ll sell them off as a fundraiser for The Midnight Lantern Foundation.

But cutting back on clutter is only one piece of the puzzle. I need a new attitude and a new approach to so many things in my life.

For example, I have a bad, bad habit of avoiding anything that might potentially cause me stress. It’s gotten out of hand. An email I don’t want to write. A phone call I don’t;t want to answer. A bill I don’t want to think about. A small household task I keep ignoring. I put off even the smallest task or responsibility, just to avoid possible discomfort, until whatever it is grows from a small nuisance to a legitimate serious problem.

I tell myself, I’ll deal with it tomorrow.

Tomorrow becomes next week.

Next week becomes next month or even next year.

I’m really good at ignoring even the most insignificant of problems.

It’s bitten me in the ass a couple of times of late. Looking back, the irony is almost funny. The stress I was trying to avoid multiplied because I refused to face it while it was still relatively small.

No more of that.

From here on out, I tackle these issues with the same tenacity I tackle writing scripts. When I’m writing, I don’t wait for the difficult scenes to magically become easier. I wrestle with them until they give way. If a script needs to be finished, I sit down and finish it. I need to bring that same attitude to the rest of my life.

Eat the frog. Make the call. Answer the email. Open the envelope.

Handle the problem while it’s still a pebble instead of a Blood Temple boulder.

I‘ve spent a lot of time in recent weeks trying to wrap my head around Todoist as a tool to help me stay on track and get things done. I’ve used the app for years, but never really used it. Now, I’m putting some energy into understanding the features and templates and tricks to make the most of it. I can feel it coming together for me. I can feel it becoming a vital part of my day-to-day life. Im not sure it is a habit yet, but it’s getting there.

Next up… and in issues to come… I need to tackle my health and mental wellbeing.

I learned this week that the great Reggie Bannister had passed away. He had been struggling with health issues of late. Still, this hit me harder than you might expect. Reggie, as you probably know, was the star of my favorite horror movie franchise, Phantasm. More than that, though, he was an incredibly nice guy who was always super kind, welcoming, and supportive of me. Early in my career, we traveled in similar convention circles, and we got to hang out a few times. I was (and still am) painfully shy, but I stuck my neck out to talk to Reggie. He could have crushed my spirits. Instead, he fired them up. RIP, Reggie.

Damn, but mortality is a bastard.

And then—then—we’ll be signing in New Orleans on Friday. August 28th!

This issue, as you might have noticed, was a little late. That’s because I was enjoying the last days of San Diego Comic Con, preparing for the return trip, and actually making the return trip. I’m now home, drinking coffee and Diet Coke to stay awake, and recalibrating my thoughts for the days ahead. SDCC is nothing if not exhausting, but I can’t afford a ton of downtime. I’ll take it “a little” easy today, but the fields of valor await.

I was trying to think of how many times I’ve attended SDCC. I believe the first was right around the time The Damned had been released in trade paperback and The Sixth Gun was being created but had not been released yet. That puts it around 2007. Looking back, it seems I’ve been to the convention 18 times. Every time I’ve gone has been a little different. I always tell myself that this is the SDCC during which I’m going to relax, but it never seems to work out that way! There are so many meetings and interviews and panels and signings to attend, I’m always on the go.

This year, I spent almost all of my con at the Ignition Pavilion, which was a pretty magical place. Right across from the convention center, it was set up as a celebration of the first year of Ignition Press. There, I had my own table where I was signing books. I also did a number of signings in the front room, sort of like a welcoming committee. And I did a number of interviews that I’m sure will be posted and shareable soon! I have an idea of how many people came through the door at the pavilion, but I’ll let the folks at Ignition share those details.

Ignition released the Cold Open issue of my new comic Cult-de-Sac at SDCC. The Cold Opens are exclusive to Ignition, so if you missed the book at the con, you will be able to get them directly from the publisher. I feel like everyone I talked to really dug the premise of the comic. Here’s the simple pitch I used (over and over and over again) at the table:

Cult-de-Sac is the story of a family who has found their dream home in a quiet little neighborhood. But they quickly come to believe that their Homeowners Association is a demon-worshipping cult. Spoiler alert: they’re right.

It’s always important, while sitting at a convention table, to have a quick-and-easy pitch ready.

Cindy and I had some nice dinners and drinks in the evenings, and we got to hang out with some great friends. Spending time with cool folks (especially my wife) is often my favorite part of the trip each year.

I didn’t take a lot of photos this trip, but I did snap some shots at a couple of amazing dining and drinking experiences.

First up was Quixote, a unique Mexican restaurant in a decommissioned Catholic church. Talk about atmosphere!

A few nights later, we hit Youngblood, a hidden speakeasy where the bartenders curate and create the drinks you’re served over three courses.

I highly recommend these spots when you’re in San Diego!

One bit of advice that came to me this weekend, one thought that I’d share with anyone who was attending SDCC for the first time, is this:

Be open to just letting the convention happen.

I know there are goals to be achieved, exclusives to be found, panels to attend. Sometimes, though, the best elements of the convention just happen to you while you’re not searching for them.

I was asked, as always, a lot about my creative output. A couple of folks even pointed out that when it comes to the number of unique original creator-owned series, I’ve created more than any other writer. I haven’t done the research to verify that. It doesn’t seem necessary. But how is it that I create so many stories?

Five pages at a time.

Five pages, at least, every day.

A love of the game.

A knowledge that one day, inevitably, I’ll be finished.

And a heartbreaking desire to tell as many stories as possible before that happens.

There it is. That’s my secret. I don’t encourage anyone else to try to follow my work schedule. That way leads to madness. But I do encourage everyone to find the secret that will lead to their own best productivity.

That leads me back to the here and now.

I’m home.

I’m gathering my energy.

I’m preparing.

You see, for me, SDCC is a con of significant ups and downs. The show has a way of beating me down and making me feel very insignificant. I mean, I’m surrounded by hundreds of thousands of people. That is sure to make you feel small. Add in the fact that many of those folks are creators who have such exciting projects in the works. It doesn’t fuel my sails as suck the air out of my lungs. It’s still a motivating convention. The best conventions are. But not in the same way as those other conventions.

And, so, I’ve got some work to do.

I need to make some changes (as I’ve been discussing in recent issues). I need to buckle down and recapture my writing mojo. I need to remind the world of who I am and what I do. More importantly…

…I need to remind myself of who I am and what I do.

Speaking of The Midnight Lantern Foundation, mark your calendars if you live near Springfield MO. On Friday, November 13, we are hosting a huge celebration and fundraising event. Here are some initial details, but we are adding more and more excitement with every passing day!

Join us for a Friday the 13th celebration benefiting The Midnight Lantern Foundation, a Springfield-based nonprofit dedicated to bringing horror, fantasy, and sci-fi books, comics, games, toys, and imagination to children and families in need. The evening will feature music, raffles, silent auctions, donation opportunities, and fun, with all proceeds supporting the Foundation’s charitable programs. We will be hosting a toy drive, accepting new, unwrapped toys and games for our holiday efforts. The all-ages event will be held at the Where House Bar (2463 W. As I write this, I’m sitting in my hotel room in San Diego. In a few hours, I’ll be heading down to the Ignition Pavilion for signings. Later, I’ll be braving the convention center to participate in a panel on New England’s influence on the horror genre.

I’m not 100% sure I’m the best panelist to talk about New England. I mean, sure, I know horror, but I’d be willing to bet there are other creators with a deeper connection to New England.

Still, I have plenty of thoughts on the subject.

I had a different newsletter ready to go. It discussed, in part, all the changes I’m currently addressing in my life. However, I decided to hold off on that for a little bit. That’s because it’s San Diego Comic Con week! Where the Hell did the time go? Cindy and I are hopping on a plane tomorrow and heading to California! It’s going to be a very busy, very hectic week for me, but it’ll be a good time, too!

Over the weekend, JimmyZ and I traveled to Perryville, Missouri, for the Heroes for Kids convention. The convention is a joint charity venture from Villainous Grounds and Heroes For Kids. They support local and regional organizations in need. The folks who run the event are super cool, and I had a great time in Perryville. We stayed in a rambling old Air BNB that was built in 1858. I know there were ghosts to be found in that building, but I never spotted one.

It’s come to my attention, that a change would do me a world of good.

Not just one change, but a boatload of them.

It’s for this reason that, on a couple of miserably hot days, I found myself throwing boxes around in my garage this past week. Y’see, I’ve decided that I can no longer tolerate all the junk that’s cluttering my lifestyle. Among the first things that have to go: all the Halloween decorations I’ve accumulated over the years. Boxes of masks and skeletons and body parts (fake, I swear) animated monsters. All destined for happier pastures.

Yes, I love Halloween.

Always have.

Always will.

For several years, one of the highlights of my October has been putting together a haunted house in our garage with my son. We were a big hit in the neighborhood. Folks would come from far and wide (or at least several streets over) to face the terrors that awaited them within. It was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun, and it was something my son and I did together.

Getting rid of all those decorations hurt.

I deal with a lot of guilt on a regular basis anyhow. As I was boxing this stuff up, I felt like I was letting my kid down or tarnishing the memories of Halloween past. I know we’re not going to be putting any haunted houses together anymore. I know he has a life that is rapidly changing and expanding for him. He’s an adult now, after all, and he’s starting college soon. Still, the haunted garage was something we did as a team. Letting the decorations go, even to a good home, stings.

Painful… especially here in the middle of Summerween… but it had to be done.

In the clutter department, I’ve been trying regain control of my life for a few months. I have a daily goal of throwing out five items (might be small, might be large) I no longer want or need. It’s helped. But it’s not been enough. The purge of spooky decorations was the first major step I’ve taken in a while.

Next up will be all my various collections. Over the years, I’ve collected many things. Comics, books, role-playing games, tiki mugs, magazines, dusty old toys, matchbooks, limited edition bourbon. The collections grow and grow and grow, often sitting untouched, out of sight, tucked away in closets and storage rooms. And, at the moment, it all seems sort of pointless. I’m not planning on completely eradicating any of my collections, but I do think it is time to trim them back a little. I also think it’s high time I put a moratorium on adding anything new to the assortment of junk I’ve gathered. So, I’ll cut back, donate, and inventory what remains so that, when I’m gone, my kid will know if there’s anything of value to be sold off in my honor.

But the clutter is just one phase of a near complete overhaul for me. There are so, so many areas of improvement, and I feel a crushing need to work on them all… now… before it is too late. To discuss all these concerns at the moment, though, would result in a much, much longer newsletter than I think anyone wants.

Next time, then, I’ll dig a little deeper.

Solo gamebooks were a big, big part of my life for a long while. Am I saying I was a lonely kid? Maybe. It all started, of course, with Choose Your Own Adventure books. I loved them so much. When the Weekly Reader order forms came out, I’d grab up as many of them as my allowance would allow. A little while later, I discovered TSR’s Endless Quest books. From there, I graduated to Steve Jackson’s Sorcery books, which I stumbled upon in a Waldenbooks. The Fighting Fantasy and Lone Wolf series were close behind. I still own most of those books. I thought it might be cool (for reasons to be detailed below) to note some of my all-time favorites.

The Cave of Time (CYOA)
This one is, for me, the grandaddy of all Choose Your Own Adventure books. There were, apparently, other “pick-a-path” books before it, but this was the first of the CYOA series. I stumbled onto it while flipping through the aforementioned Weekly Reader, and I was hooked. A cave that sent you spiraling through time? Sign me up!

Space and Beyond (CYOA)

While The Cave of Time was the first, no other CYOA book left an impression like this one. I remember our English teacher reading this one to the class. At each choice, she would take a vote to determine the direction the story would head. This one has one of the most short, sweet, and chilling stopping points of all time. It’s stuck with me… and many others… for a long time.

Return to Brookmere (Endless Quest)

I couldn’t have been more excited when I found out TSR was putting out D&D-themed CYOA-style adventure books. Return to Brookmere was the first one I read… and read… and read. I loved the story. I loved the choices. And I loved the magic item called the Mouth of Mimulus (or something like that). That little dragon-headed artifact ended up appearing in many of my own D&D campaigns.

Dungeon of Dread (Endless Quest)

A pure dungeon crawl packed with monsters, traps, and dangerous choices. It embraces everything that made early fantasy gamebooks so addictive. And it featured a water weird, a D&D monster I never respected until I saw one on the cover of this book.

Villains of Volturnus (Endless Quest)

Most of the Endless Quest books were set in D&D worlds, but there were a handful of exceptions. I loved the Star Frontiers setting, so this sci-fi space adventure was a thrill for me.

The Shamutanti Hills (Steve Jackson’s Sorcery)

There was something about the format of these books that made them feel… I dunno… special. I found it in Waldenbooks, and I felt like I had discovered something special. The storytelling and setting and meaningful choices didn’t hurt, either. These books had a nasty trick, I admit. You basically had to have the companion spellbook to successfully complete the adventure. Or… at least… you had to be pretty good at guessing the spell you needed to cast. Still, that somehow made the book (and those that followed) even more interesting to me.

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (Fighting Fantasy)

For me, the book that launched the Fighting Fantasy series remains one of its finest entries. This book about searching for and battling an evil wizard has rightfully inspired board games and RPG adventures over the years. I’m pretty sure I discovered the Sorcery books first, but this one was the first to hit the shelves.

Flight from the Dark (Lone Wolf)

This opening adventure introduces Lone Wolf in spectacular fashion, balancing survival, exploration, and heroic fantasy. It laid the foundation for one of the greatest solo RPG series ever published. I was able to meet the creator, Joe Dever, just a couple of years before he passed, and I made sure to tell him how much I loved this series.

House of Hell (Fighting Fantasy)

Brutal, atmospheric, and unforgiving, House of Hell lives up to its name. It throws you into a mansion overflowing with cultists and supernatural horrors. In this one, making it out alive feels like a real accomplishment.

Blizzard Pass (D&D Invisible Ink Module)

Did you ever go on a road trip and stop at a Stuckey’s? And, if so, did you ever buy one of those invisible ink gamebooks that was full of mazes and crosswords and such? Well, this D&D module combines solo adventuring with invisible-ink mechanics. Somehow, Blizzard Pass felt high-tech for its time.

Castle Arcana (TSR’s 1-on-1 Adventure)

Technically, I guess this wasn’t a solo game, but it was pretty similar. It came with two solo adventure books, one featuring the adventures of a paladin, the other a necromancer. You and a friend would read the books at the same time. As you made your choices, moving around a dungeon, you would sometimes enter the same areas… at which time you’d fight!

Alone on Halloween (Pagan Publishing, Call of Cthulhu)

This Call of Cthulhu solo adventure is simply superb. There are plenty of choices to make and paths to explore in a mysterious mansion. This one, though, let you follow a map to determine where the story took you. It was a pretty great mechanic. There was also a Doom Track element that elevated the tension. I’ve played through it several times and still think there is a lot I’ve missed.

Grimrock Isle (Triad Publishing, Call of Cthulhu)

This solo campaign (which could also be turned into a RPG campaign) came in a thick folder full of various booklets. As you investigated a mysterious community, you would pick up different solo books (for, say, the cemetery or the orchard or the lighthouse). Every section was full of pure terror. If you were running a Call of Cthulhu campaign, you could had the books off to your players as they went off on their own. I played this campaign so often (both solo and as part of a campaign) that the folder fell apart.

My collection of solo gamebooks now looms in a few precarious stacks in a closet. I love those books dearly. They represent a key era of my reading and gaming life. And, as you’ll see below, something I’ve put a little energy into myself.

Alone Against… the Deathlords of Daemonrot is the first in a series of solo RPG adventures that I’ve written.

Despite the warnings…

…despite the horrifying legends…

…despite the night terrors that plagued your sleep…

…you and your brave band of compatriots ventured deep into the twisting tunnels of a forbidden and sinister cave system filled with fell creatures and fiendish traps. Your lust for fortune and glory drove you onward despite the dangers you met. You made it deeper into the catacombs than most. Maybe your early success brought about overconfidence.

And overconfidence brought about your downfall.

Creeping down a flight of natural, uneven stairs, you and your adventuring compatriots entered a vast, flooded cavern. Great, slime-covered stalagmites rose from the murk. Jagged, dripping stalactites cascaded from a ceiling lost to the dark. The stone features gave the cave the resemblance of a toothy maw, just waiting to chew you up.

And then… in a way… it did.

Your attackers surged shrieking from the darkness.

Ferrin the thief screamed as he was dragged into the black, never to be seen again.

Solworth the ranger felt the searing sting of a dozen barbed arrows before he fell, squirming and twitching, into the fetid water.

Aramel the sorcerer tried to utter a spell to turn your enemies away, but a blade across his throat silenced his incantations forever.

And you—staggering back, splashing through the muck, flailing about wildly with your sword—had but one thought before the fathomless emptiness swallowed you whole.

We were fools to ever set foot in the Daemonrot!

And, yet, this is just the beginning of your adventure.

The beginning of your nightmare.

In ALONE AGAINST THE DEATH LORDS OF DAEMONROT you play the lone surviving member of a party of adventurers that delved too deeply into a death-filled maze of torment and horror. Lost, alone, and faced with a fate worse than oblivion, you must muster every ounce of courage in order to challenge seemingly insurmountable odds stacked against you in your attempt to escape the dungeon with your life!

This will not be easy.

And it most certainly won’t be pleasant.

Some exciting television news for ya!

It has been announced that Starz is re-teaming with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson on a TV adaptation of my supernatural crime graphic novel Bone Parish.

Diane Ademu-John (Dune: Prophecy) and Declan de Barra (The Witcher: Blood Origin) will co-showrun the project and executive produce. Stephen Christy and Mette Norkjaer from BOOM! Studios, which published the graphic novel, will also executive produce.

I’m thrilled to see this moving along, and I can’t wait for this story to find an entirely new audience!

As you may know, I am taking over as editor of Tales From the Magician’s Skull, a fantasy magazine dedicated to presenting all-new sword-and-sorcery fiction by the finest modern crafters in the genre. My “official” first issue is 15, but I edited much of issue 14 as well. You’ll see that this issue features “The Killer & the Killer of Killers” which I wrote. Normally, I would not print a story I wrote in a book I edited. In fact, I had a couple of stories accepted for future issues, which I have pulled. In this case, though, art was already done for my story, so I decided to include it. Order your digital or print editions now!

There’s this… thing… that whistles to me from just outside my bedroom window. I’ve never seen it. But I hear it. For the last several months, every night from about two in the morning ‘til just after sunrise. Sometimes it can be heard a little earlier. Sometimes just a little later. But always around those times. And only when everything else is silent.

It’s sort of a:

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee-ort. Wheee-ort. Whee. Whee. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee-ort.

Over and over.

I can’t identify it. I can’t pinpoint the source. It’s not very loud, but it sounds like it is close. Sometimes, it almost sounds like it is coming from just inside the window. I’ve tried… and failed… to capture it with my phone several times.

When I try to listen for it, it falls silent.

Cindy has never noticed it. When I tell her about it, she suggests that it might be the wind blowing across the eaves. Or maybe a bird. Both reasonable suggestions, but the sound is too consistently weird for such things. It’s possible it’s all in my head.

Maybe it’s some sort of siren.

Or, worse, a psychopomp waiting to sweep me away to my doom.

Psychopomps feature in a lot of my stories. In fact, I was just looking at some pages for an as-yet unannounced project. These pages—by an awesome artist and frequent collaborator—feature some psychopomps. These entities exist to ferry souls from the land of the living to the land of the dead. Charon, the valkyries, the grim reaper. Sometimes animals such as ravens, owls, butterflies, or cats are depicted as psychopomps.

In the pages I was perusing featured whippoorwills.

Definitely not the sound I’ve been hearing.

Though there are similarities.

And now I’ve got one of these little spirits outside my bedroom window calling me to join it!

Well, that shitty little psychopomp can just keep on whistling and waiting! I’ve got way, way too much to do before the end of all things! I will kick the ass of a supernatural ferryman if I must.

Beyond that, I feel like I’ve been a little off my writing game the last few days. I’ve been doing a ton of work around the house, working on the deck, organizing my disorganized crap, and otherwise distracting myself. I’ve gone to comedy shows (Lucy Darling) and concerts (Journey) and recitals (my kid). But writing has been put on the back burner in a major way.

I completed the outline for a feature film I’m writing, so that’s something, but it’s the only something I’ve managed to work on.

So… this week is going to be busy in terms of writing. I’ve got a couple of scripts I want to get finished. More if I can manage it.

And that’s not all!

On Tuesday, Cindy has her next (and hopefully final) treatment for the NETs she’s been battling. I haven’t been posting a lot of updates on this because there hasn’t been a whole lot to tell. It continues to be stressful on many, many fronts. Cindy continues to be a total boss in terms of how she is handling said stress. And we are still in the dark in terms of next steps. Hopefully, we have some terrific news to share soon.

On Wednesday, I’ll be hosting another Whiskey and Words event! I’ve got a handful of really fun prompts ready to go.

July 4th is Cindy’s birthday, and I’m going to be grilling hot dogs and drinking frozen margaritas.

Add to that a ton more housework, book re-orders, and general work and life upkeep, and I might not have a lot of time to catch my breath.

The last several weeks, as you might know, have been very busy for me. I’ve done three conventions (and one store signing) in a row, driving to each of them (6.5 hours to one, 14 to the other). It’s taken up a ton of time, and I’ve had a rough time getting back into the swing of things.

When I’m having trouble getting into the swing of existing projects, I sometimes focus on new ideas.

This, then, is the result of that.

Welcome to the Nightmare Fuel Backdraft. I’ve had this in mind for a few months now. A companion piece to my main newsletter, this one offering some different thoughts and insights and content. I’m approaching it a little differently than I originally had in mind, and it will likely evolve over time.

Four (Plus) Bloody Awful Horrors

1. Hellraiser: Revival, the upcoming survival horror video game from Saber Interactive, has an official release date of October 8, 2026. I’ve had my copy pre-ordered for a long while, and I’ve refused to watch the trailer. If you want to check it out, though, here it is:

. There is a lot of other footage being released, but I’m avoiding that, too. I’m very excited for this game.

2. While at Heroes Con, I picked up a near complete run on the old Monster Times newspapers. These papers came out in the 70s, and they were full of monstrous news and photos and fold-out posters. Pulling a random issue out of the stack, I have a bright yellow cover featuring the fearsome Ymir from 20 Million Miles to Earth. Lord, how I loved that creature! The issue is Volume 1, Number 20 from 1973. The articles within focus heavily on Star Trek, it seems. The poster is a Keep on Trekkin’ poster. There’s a two-page sci-fi comic. A lengthy discussion of Fu-Manchu. An article on fanzine publishing. And so, so many awesome monster ads! This paper is definitely one of the inspirations for The Midnight Edition.

3. At the coffee shop the other day, one of the employees noted that she wished she could see a ghost. My feeling is that she probably does see ghosts all the time. I think they are all around us. I think they look like us. Sometimes, they might interact with us. Sometimes, they’re just silent strangers on the street. I truly believe that maybe 25% of the people you see on a daily basis are lingering spirits.

4. Word on the street is that Evil Dead Wrath is going to be set in 1972, predating the original movie. I’m all for it! I’ve loved all of the Evil Dead movies, and I’m looking forward to Wrath and Burn. I typically avoid trailers, but I did catch the Evil Dead Burn trailer. It was sensational. Here’s my current ranking of Evil Dead flicks:

5. I admit I’m not keeping up on Amazing Spider-Man drama… but I’ve seen some of the backlash over John Romita Jr.’s cover. I also saw someone on Instagram (I’m not going to seek them out again or re-post them) saying “Our BULLYING worked! They’re pulling the cover we didn’t like!” That is a terrible take, frankly, and it tells me that this fan doesn’t get the Spider-Man they “love so much” AT ALL. I bet there are blank cover variants that will be available. Draw your own fucking cover. Just pure jackassery. I, for one, hope the cover remains in play.

Monster of the Week

Since I mentioned 20 Million Miles to Earth, why not mention the Ymir?

The Ymir is one of the most iconic movie monsters of the 1950s. Discovered as a tiny alien hatchling brought back from Venus, the creature grows at an astonishing rate as it adapts to Earth’s environment. Though often portrayed as a destructive beast, the Ymir is more tragic than villainous, acting on instinct in a world it cannot understand. I can relate! Brought to life through the stop-motion animation of Ray Harryhausen, the Ymir remains a beloved example of classic science fiction creature design and cinematic special effects.

From the Vault

When I was a kid, I wanted to be an artist. I was pretty good, but I eventually drifted out of practice. I stopped drawing as much when I took a big portfolio of art to school with me and someone stole it. I still have a few pieces of art leftover. This one is from a series of images I was drawing called Epic. Look closely and you can see that I was drawing on the back of order forms for my dad’s photography studio, Heritage Studios.

Currently Consuming

At this very second, I’m listening to “Darkness” by Daniel Deluxe. The opening lines are taken from Legend. “I require the solace of the shadows.”

I finally watched the most recent Scream movie. I enjoyed it. But I’ve enjoyed all of them. This one is better than its predecessor, so there’s that.

I’ve been reading some novellas and short story collections from Filthy Loot. They are putting out some really cool pocket books. I love the format and may play around with that myself. The God in the Hills and The God in the Hills 2 by Jon Steffens are my current jam.

Story Fuel

While driving home from North Carolina, we passed through an extended area of intense road construction. Somewhere, off in the hills, there was a regular whistling howl that could be heard. I’m sure it was a piece of heavy machinery doing its thing, but that kind of sound rushing from the hills gave me pause to capture a title--The Whistler in the Hills. I’ll do something with it somewhere down the line.

I mentioned in our last issue that I had made a purchase at Heroes Con but I was holding off sharing what it was. I waited because of Father’s Day. And, while this issue comes out just after that special day, I feel like this still works.

As you may know, my old man—who we all called “Bunn”—and I collected X-Men together. Bunn wasn’t really a comic book fan. He didn’t read them. But he still shared the hobby with me. He loved hunting for back issues. He loved (and was a master at) wheeling and dealing with vendors at comic book shows. He traveled a lot for work, and he carried my Want List with him. Oftentimes, he would return from a trip with a couple of issues in hand. Over the course of a few years, we managed to collect an entire run of X-Men. Issue 1 to whatever was current at the moment. After X-Men, we started on Spider-Man, managing to get an Amazing Fantasy 15 and the first 10 or so issues of the main series in relatively short order.

Collecting those books meant something to both of us. It was our thing. It was something we did together.

And then I sold the collection to help pay for college.

It’s long been one of my biggest regrets in life. I know. I know. It funded my education! I think, though, I would have been happier just gathering a much larger student loan. College or not, I always felt like I somehow let Bunn down by selling those books.

In recent years, I’ve tried to re-collect X-Men. I honored the collecting experience that my dad and I had honored. I only bought issues found in the wild. At conventions. At comic book shops. No online purchases. I had to hold the issue in my hands in order to buy it. It took a while. Comic book collecting is an expensive hobby. I didn’t really have the funds to go crazy. And I’ve never been as good at haggling as my dad.

Still, I went into this year needing two issues. They were relatively big issues. Issue 4 (the first Scarlet Witch) and Issue 12 (the first Juggernaut). I told myself that I would finish the run, though, and before Father’s Day in honor of Bunn. I grabbed Issue 4 at a convention earlier this year, and I finally obtained Issue 12 at Heroes. Now, some of the copies in the collection are rough, I admit, but I have them. I can always upgrade as time goes by if I really feel froggy. What mattered to me was completing the run.

My dad didn’t live long enough to see me write Uncanny X-Men, but I think he would have been proud. He didn’t see me complete the run again, but I hope that he’s looking down at me and smiling at the accomplishment.

Happy Father’s Day, Bunn.

I miss you.

And, no, I don’t think I’ll move on to Spider-Man. That stuff is priced way out of my league.

Look how joyful… how excited… people are to catch a glimpse of Cullen in the wild!

This is Merv, who walked past and snapped this pic as I pitched The Sixth Gun to a new reader at Heroes Con. I’ve known Merv since elementary school. (Back on Halloween, I wrote an essay about some of Merv’s adventures.) Over the years, he has become one of the biggest supporters of my work. We got to hang out for a bit over the weekend in Charlotte, and it was a great time.

If this issue gets to you on Monday morning (and that is a a huge “if” judging from how tired I am), then I’m currently on the highway heading home. JimmyZ and I set out on Wednesday of last week, heading to Heroes Con with a quick stop for a store signing in Nashville along the way. We faced flooded bridges and terrible road construction along the way.

The signing took place at The Great Escape in Nashville. It was a massive store, full of records and books and comics.

After the signing, we hit downtown Nashville (where we were assured by multiple people that we could… and would… get into trouble) for a bit, stopping by Teddy’s Tavern for beers and Nashville hot chicken and Pushing Daisies (an underground margarita bar) for tequila drinks.

Or whiskey drinks, vodka drinks, or cider drinks, or lager drinks.

You’re welcome for the morning ear worm.

My apologies now… for all the pictures of food and drink. I like to hit up delicious spots when I’m traveling.

The next morning, we hauled ass down the highway to Charlotte.

After setting up the booth, Jimmy and I headed to Valhalla for drinks and Viking-themed grub. While there, we met up with Nasser (who runs C.A.S.A. in San Antonio). We headed to Spurs Up Saloon for drinks. I ended up owing Nasser three drinks because I bet him they wouldn’t be able to make old fashioneds. I also played a dice game called “Shut the Box” which I thought was pretty fun. In the end, I talked Jimmy and Nasser into trying Fernet with me.

On Friday, the convention exploded into full gear, and it was a whirlwind. I decided that I was not going to charge for signatures, but I would ask for donations to The Midnight Lantern Foundation, and it worked out really well. Everyone was super supportive!

Of course, we peddled print editions of The Midnight Edition to help raise money for The Midnight Lantern Foundation.

During this time, the Midnight Lantern was set up at the Route 66 Comic and Toy Show.

I got to talk to many of my favorite creators and collaborators. I met so many awesome readers! Merv and his friend Tracy joined us during the day, and that night we charged toward a Mexican joint. No one (but me) was having a drink, but thankfully Nasser showed up later so I wasn’t drinking alone! We closed the night out hanging out at the bar in my hotel.

Day Two was equally amazing! It was insanely busy at the show, and I signed a lot of books. Out donation bin was close to overflowing. Jimmy tried (for the first time) bith Cheerwine and Bojangles french fries!

After the con, we headed out to Dish for some country cooking. There, I had salmon patties, which remind me of the salmon patties my mom used to cook. After Dish, we stopped in at the infamous Heroes Con art auction and wished we could afford to bid on some of the amazing art pieces. Leaving, we wandered around a bit, but didn’t really accomplish a whole lot… other than Merv showing Jimmy and me a secret path between the convention and the hotel. I wish I had known this secret beforehand, because it made life so much easier.

On the last day, we finished strong. “But, Cullen,” you may ask, “did you buy anything for yourself?”

I did.

One of the things I bought, I will keep to myself until next week… for reasons. But I did buy myself a huge chunk of Monster Times newspapers.

During Heroes and Route 66, the Midnight Lantern Foundation started collecting sketches on jam covers. We’re going to be adding to the covers in the coming months, then auctioning them off in October. I won’t list the artist names just yet, but here are some of the covers we have so far.

Pretty rad, huh?

We’re keeping this one short this week.

You might have noticed that it’s a little late. That’s because I spent the weekend in Indianapolis at Indiana Comic Con. I got back home Monday, but I’m heading out again on Wednesday, this time to Heroes Con, and I have laundry, housework, work work, and convention packing to do! All things considered, it’s a little too much heaped upon my shoulders, but it’s no one’s fault but my own.

Indiana Comic Con was a blast! I peddled a lot of books, met a lot of cool folks, and even raised a bit of money for The Midnight Lantern Foundation. Cindy was with me this time, and I think she had a good time, too! At the end of the convention, one of the organizers came by to tell me that they had held a end-of-con suggestion panel with attendees. During the panel, he said, numerous people said meeting me was a highlight and that they’d love to see me come back! I have to admit, that made me feel kind of great.

I try to make sure everyone I talk to at a convention or signing leaves happy. I was talking to comic artist Rags Morales, and he shared a philosophy that I’m stealing (and tweaking just a little to better fit my work as a writer):

Everyone who visits my table should leave with three things: a book, a smile, and a story.

It’s how I’ve long felt, but put in a perfectly succinct way.

I didn’t take enough photos, and I’m having trouble downloading the ones I did take, but I’ll share what I have in my next newsletter (which might be a day or two late), along with con reports from Indy and Heroes Con!

I will leave you with this, though. Every convention, there’s at least one person who brings me something strange to sign. This one was a gentleman who had a page from Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe on his arm! I signed his arm, of course, and he told me he was going to get my signature permanently inked as well!

If you’re in Nashville, I’ll be signing (along with JimmyZ) at The Great Escape on Wednesday!

Then… I’ll be at Heroes Con for the rest of the weekend!

Over the weekend, I attended Tremendicon in Springfield, Missouri. This was the convention’s fifth year. It’s always a fun show, but also a little weird. I feel like I’m on the go-go-go every year, whether that is attending panels or managing the writers content track or checking in with guests. I’m no longer on the convention board, but this convention keeps me hopping, and I feel I’m rarely at my table.

This year, The Midnight Lantern Foundation also had a table, and I was popping over there from time to time. We were giving out free comics and offering up copies of The Midnight Edition. Thanks to generous convention attendees, we came away with some donations in cash and in items to offer up as gifts. So—here’s a huge thanks for all that support. We also came up with some new ideas for things to do at future convention appearances.

Once again, I entered a piece into the blank cover auction, which benefited the Hero Initiative. In an affront to talented artists everywhere, my cover brought in the most money. Do I think it’s an insult to artists? Yes. Do I think they should have brought in more than me? Yes. Did I still gloat and razz them about it? Yes.

The truth of the matter is… this is the reason this cover brought in a fair amount. (1) Deadpool is always popular. (2) This is a comic I wrote. (3) I’m not an artist and I don’t draw many sketch covers, so it is a rarity. (4) Since there was an online component to bidding, I promoted the auction to my fans.

It’s a fun auction with some great comic art up for grabs.

And I’m gonna be there to eat everyone’s breakfast again. ;)

I also declared war on the artists during their Drink and Draw event. I was hosting Whiskey and Words next door at the same time. At one point, I asked the writers in attendance if they would like to ball up paper and pelt the artists with it. I’ve never seen paper crumpled so quickly. With a cry of “Die, artists! Die!” we brought down an ungodly hellstorm upon them, then scattered like ninja. The artists, of course, retaliated with cruel drawings of me, which you can see on the Midnight Lantern instagram.

Over the week, I spent some time with my pal JimmyZ and we talked about marketing and projects and how creators can do more to help one another. We also played board games, including one I had forgotten recently came out.

Evil High Priest from Petersen Games is a lot of fun. It puts the players in the roles of cultists trying to awaken an elder god. Jimmy described it as a prequel to my favorite board game Cthulhu Wars. That’s pretty accurate. It’s one of those games that I think you just need to dive into and learn as you play. The rules seemed a little confusing at first… or at least a little too chunky to describe… but it was simple in execution. I loved it.

At the convention, I bought an obscene amount of vintage D&D books. I haven’t even unpacked them to snap a photo of them because there were so many. What was fun, though, is that I was showing the books to Cindy, Timmy Flipflops, and Josh at the con when this guy walked up. He eyed the books and said, “Hey! I edited a bunch of these!” His name was Michael Breault, and he worked with TSR in the 80s. We chatted for a bit, and I had him sign a few of the books for the collection.

I spent some time with the Outland Entertainment crew, of course, because they’re awesome. Admittedly, it has been a rough few months in publishing for them, but they’ve got plans to roll with the punches and come back even stronger.

I also spent time with so many aspiring writers. It’s one of the things I find most refreshing about this convention. Writers come here to learn. To be inspired. To get energized. And I always get some of that back from them.

All this is to say, this issue of the newsletter is a day late because I’m exhausted, but what a tremendous time at the convention. Thanks to everyone on the Tremendicon crew for all they do! Let’s do it again next year!
