July was my birthday month, a big one.

A new decade, a new era. The strange and beautiful feeling of standing at the beginning of something without needing to know exactly what that something will become.

So this month’s playlist is short and sweet, songs that gave me hope, made me dance, brought back memories, and reminded me how good it feels to be here.

Madonna’s “Fragile” found its way into the quieter moments, while Hinotoriproject’s “La Dolce Riviera” made everything feel a little more open, sun-soaked and free.

And yes, Stromae’s “Alors on danse" did exactly what the title asked. I danced.

Dua Lipa’s “Falling Forever” (live from Mexico), carried a different kind of freedom. that exhilarating willingness to trust that a love deep enough to fall into might still be somewhere out there.

Then came the time machines.

Crazy Town’s “Butterfly” took me straight back to another beginning, another version of myself stepping into a new era many moons ago. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” brought me back to New York and the beginning of a chapter that changed me in ways I couldn’t have understood at the time.

Maybe that’s what I loved most about listening this month.

The past wasn’t asking to be revisited. It was simply showing up alongside the present, old selves, old cities, old feelings, meeting the woman standing here now.

A little nostalgia, a little freedom, a little romance and a lot of life.

Here’s to new decades, and whatever comes next.

July was my birthday month. A big one this year.

A new decade.

Equal parts exhilarating and humbling.

Words fall short of expressing how grateful I feel to be here, to be alive, to have this life, to still be curious about what’s next. Sometimes I think about the little girl my teacher once described as “peaceful, but a little concerned.” She had no idea who she would become, or how deeply she would one day appreciate simply getting to arrive here.

As if that wasn’t enough, one of my closest friends gifted me a turntable.

If you know me, you know this is the kind of gift that borders on life-changing.

Years ago, I lost my entire music collection.Every CD, every piece of my physical archive, my sound system, all gone… Starting again felt impossible.

Now, it feels exciting :)

The first record I brought home was Massive Attack’s “Protection”. It barely left the platter before another dear friend surprised me with Radiohead’s “Kid A Mnesia” special edition.

So here I am, building a music library from scratch, again, and somehow, it feels exactly right.

Jack White — Frozen Charlotte

Raw, loud, gloriously blues-soaked.

Frozen Charlotte feels like a natural companion to No Name, all grit, swagger and restless energy. Jack White continues to sound like someone chasing instinct rather than trends, and that’s precisely what makes him so compelling.

Fred again.. & LATIN MAFIA — 9 Months & 50 Hours

An unexpected collaboration, and one of my favourite surprises of the month.

Even if this isn’t normally your kind of record, I’d encourage you to give it a chance. There’s real tenderness underneath the production. Soulful, intimate, quietly emotional, before those unmistakable Fred again.. rhythms begin lifting everything into something euphoric.

Charli xcx — Music, Fashion, Film

Less BRAT. More guitar.

Minimalist, playful and unexpectedly restrained, this feels like a remarkably courageous next chapter after one of the defining pop records of recent years. Rather than trying to recreate lightning, Charli chooses a different storm altogether.

The Rolling Stones — Foreign Tongues

The Stones’ 25th studio album is swaggering, rhythm-driven and wonderfully alive.

Produced by Andrew Watt, “Foreign Tongues” pairs the band’s unmistakable chemistry with guests including Paul McCartney, Robert Smith and appearances honouring Charlie Watts’ enduring legacy. Most astonishing of all, Mick Jagger still sounds impossibly vital.

Green Day — Nimrods Original Soundtrack

Released alongside the Green Day-inspired comedy Nimrods, the soundtrack blends fresh material, including the punchy “I’m Never Gonna R.I.P.”, with unreleased live recordings and a healthy reminder of why these songs have endured for decades.

Still lingering

I had the privilege of attending a private screening of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey a few days before its official release.

First, can we normalize more private screenings? I’d happily accept another invitation.

As for the film, it’s every bit as ambitious as you’d expect. Immaculately crafted, visually breathtaking and anchored by the timeless weight of Homer’s nearly three-thousand-year-old story. Nolan understands that spectacle only works when it serves something deeply human, and The Odyssey never loses sight of that.
See it in a cinema, an IMAX screen, if you possibly can.

In memory of

Glen Hansard.

His generosity as both a songwriter and performer shaped so much of the emotional landscape of modern folk music.

I still remember watching “Once” shortly after it was released, knowing almost nothing about him beforehand. The film quietly broke my heart.Its songs felt less like performances than conversations, carrying a kind of honesty that lingers long after the credits roll.

I became an admirer immediately and followed his work ever since. Some artists don’t simply make music, they leave us with places to return to.

June resisted a single mood.

It was a month of moving, settling, beginning again. Of quietly questioning where my life, my work, and my curiosity want to go next. A month that asked more questions than it answered.

So the soundtrack became equally difficult to pin down.

Whenever things felt too heavy, dance music came to the rescue. Madonna’s Love Sensation reminded me that joy is sometimes a practice. Janet Jackson’s That’s the Way Love Goes returned like an old friend, while Dark Necessities by Red Hot Chili Peppers found its way back into rotation for reasons I still can’t quite explain.

Then there were the songs that seemed to soundtrack the spaces in between. Wet Leg’s CPR stayed on repeat. Saint Harison’s Minute held the quieter moments, while Tame Impala’s Hummer drifted through the background like a familiar dream.

And then came Olivia Rodrigo’s new album. Less quickly became the song I couldn’t stop returning to—the kind of track that finishes only to demand another listen. (One more time. Then one more after that.)

Looking back, this playlist feels less like a collection of songs and more like a map of a month in transition. A little uncertain. A little hopeful. Searching for lightness without looking away from the depth.
This is what June sounded like.

June arrived with more life than I had planned for.

There were practical things to navigate, joyful moments that deserved celebrating, difficult ones that demanded my full attention, and plenty of beautifully ordinary days in between. It wasn’t the month for disappearing into films or finally opening the stack of books waiting on my bedside table. Music became the thing that met me where I was.

And what a month to be listening.

Madonna — Confessions II

Some records arrive with impossible expectations attached to them.

Twenty years after “Confessions on a Dance Floor” quietly became one of the defining pop records of the 2000s (my all time favorite albums of Madonna), Madonna returned to the world she helped shape—not to recreate it, but to continue the conversation.

Confessions II isn’t interested in nostalgia. It borrows the pulse of house music, disco, acid, French touch and club culture, but its emotional landscape belongs to someone who’s lived an entire lifetime since the original. The dance floor is still there; it simply carries more history now.

The reunion with Stuart Price proves to be more than fan service. Together they’ve created something remarkably cohesive, with critics calling it Madonna’s strongest work in decades and praising its autobiographical writing, emotional honesty and refusal to chase contemporary trends. Rather than sounding like an artist trying to remain relevant, Confessions II sounds like someone who remembers exactly why she became relevant in the first place.

There are moments built for movement—“I Feel So Free” remains irresistible—but what surprised me most was the tenderness underneath the glitter. Songs like Fragile and L.E.S. Girl feel reflective, almost vulnerable, allowing Madonna’s mythology to soften into something unmistakably human.
The most interesting artists eventually stop trying to outrun time.They start making work that only they could make now and this feels like one of those records.

Olivia Rodrigo — You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love

Olivia Rodrigo has quietly stepped away from the sharp edges of SOUR and GUTS into something far more nuanced.

The title alone tells you everything: happiness and melancholy can exist in the same sentence.

Her third album is less concerned with heartbreak than with the strange emotional contradictions that come after it. Love doesn’t necessarily erase anxiety. Joy doesn’t cancel grief. Growing up means learning that several emotions can occupy the same room.

It’s also her most adventurous production to date, expanding beyond the guitar-driven sound she’s become known for while keeping the intimacy that’s made her one of the defining songwriters of her generation.

Singles that stayed

Phoebe Bridgers — “Lost Boys”
Nobody writes emotional distance quite like Phoebe. Quiet enough to whisper, devastating enough to linger for days.

PJ Harvey — “Voyager”
Another reminder that PJ Harvey never follows trends. She follows instinct, and somehow always arrives somewhere unexpected.

Jain — “Kill It With the Beat”
Exactly what the title promises: rhythmic, playful and impossible to sit still through. Welcome back Jain!

Cara Delevingne — “Need It”
Confident, cinematic pop with enough attitude to make you hit repeat before you’ve decided whether you like it.

Lola Leon — “T-Shirt”
Lourdes continues carving out a lane entirely her own—experimental, dark and refreshingly uninterested in easy comparisons.

Interpol — “This Mirror Weighs a Ton”
A reminder that nobody captures beautiful melancholy quite like Interpol. Spacious guitars, measured restraint and that unmistakable feeling of walking through a city after midnight.

Some songs are about heartbreak.
Others are about the moment you realize heartbreak has already happened.

Less is one of those songs.

Buried deep in the second half of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, the track arrives after the glow has faded and the explanations have begun. It’s a piano ballad built around a devastating contradiction: being left by someone who insists they still love you.

Not too little.
Too much.

Intuition Over Explanation

One of the most fascinating things about Olivia Rodrigo’s third album is that it began as a love story, or at least she thought it would.

In interviews surrounding the release, Rodrigo described the record as a reflection of her first truly adult relationship, a relationship that brought joy, intimacy, uncertainty, and ultimately heartbreak. She has repeatedly noted that no matter how hard she tries to write straightforward love songs, melancholy always seems to find its way into them.

That tension sits at the center of Less.

The song doesn’t spend much time explaining what happened. It isn’t interested in timelines, villains, or postmortems. Instead, it captures a single emotional paradox: the bewilderment of being told you’re loved while simultaneously being left behind.

Like many of Rodrigo’s strongest songs, it trusts the feeling more than the facts.

Kylie — A Three-Part Biography

This documentary series caught me by surprise.

As a woman, as an artist, and as someone who has walked her own path through cancer, I found parts of Kylie Minogue’s story deeply moving. The series traces her evolution from soap star to global pop icon, but its real strength lies in its willingness to linger in the spaces between the headlines.

It’s glamorous, yes. Full of career highs, reinventions, and unforgettable moments. But it’s also vulnerable. A portrait of resilience, reinvention, and the cost of living a life in public.

At times it made me want to dance. At others, it broke my heart.

Ed O’Brien — Blue Morpho

One of those records that seems to reveal something new with every listen.

Blue Morpho, Ed O’Brien’s second solo album, is expansive, introspective, and quietly cathartic. Written in the aftermath of a difficult period marked by depression during the pandemic, the album balances luminous guitar textures with orchestral arrangements and subtle trip-hop influences.
There is a generosity to these songs, a willingness to sit with uncertainty without rushing toward resolution.
I’ve returned to it again and again.

Bleachers — everyone for ten minutes

Jack Antonoff’s most ambitious and unrestrained work to date.

The album folds together country, soul, gospel, shoegaze, found sounds, and unexpected production choices with a restless sense of curiosity. It’s messy in places, sprawling in others, and all the more interesting for it.

Antonoff continues his pursuit of making records that feel larger than life, albums built for open highways, late-night drives, and oversized emotions. Not every experiment lands, but the commitment to taking risks does.

Smashing Pumpkins — Zodeon at Crystal Hall

A surprising detour from the band many people think they know.

Originally recorded during the pandemic and tucked away inside the ATUM box set, Zodeon at Crystal Hall leans into warm psychedelic pop, acoustic textures, and melodies steeped in the spirit of the late 1960s.

Billy Corgan has described it as a glimpse into an alternate version of Smashing Pumpkins—the band they might have become under different circumstances.

For listeners who have always gravitated toward the softer edges of Corgan’s songwriting, it’s a rewarding and unexpectedly gentle listen.

Ibeyi — Offerings (Single)

Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz return with a song that feels both intimate and expansive.

The French-Cuban twin sisters enter a new independent chapter with Offerings, a track rooted in self-preservation, transformation, and emotional honesty.

At its core, it’s a song about stepping away from what no longer serves you. About choosing yourself after heartbreak. About understanding that sometimes healing requires release.

Tender, spiritual, and deeply felt.

Charli XCX — SS26 (Single)

A striking departure from the maximalist energy of Brat.

SS26 trades euphoria for introspection, offering something quieter, moodier, and more restrained. The song never reaches for the explosive payoff listeners might expect. Instead, it lingers in uncertainty.
That choice has divided listeners, but that’s precisely what makes it interesting. It’s a small, reflective piece that feels more concerned with atmosphere than resolution.

Lola Young — From Down Here (Single)

One of the most emotionally affecting songs I’ve heard this month.

Co-written and co-produced with James Blake, From Down Here pairs Blake’s fractured piano textures and subtle production with Young’s unmistakably raw voice.
The result is a bruised, vulnerable meditation on fame, identity, and the weight of being seen.
Heavy in places, hopeful in others.

A reminder that growth often begins at the point of surrender.

A handful of titles that continue to occupy space in my mind:

All of a Sudden — A thoughtful three-hour Parisian drama exploring chance, mortality, and an unlikely friendship between a care-home director and a terminally ill patient.

Paper Tiger — A tense crime drama following two brothers whose lives become entangled with the Russian mafia.

The Beloved — Javier Bardem stars as a celebrated filmmaker who casts his estranged daughter in his latest project, forcing old wounds to the surface.

Fjord — Set within a remote Norwegian community, this unsettling psychological drama examines family, secrecy, and cultural expectations.

Fatherland — A historical road-trip drama following author Thomas Mann and his daughter through postwar Germany in 1949.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma — One of Cannes’ most talked-about titles, a self-aware slasher from the director of I Saw the TV Glow.

The Loss of a Great Artist

Marjane Satrapi (1969–2026)

Marjane Satrapi possessed a rare gift: the ability to make the deeply personal feel universal.

Through Persepolis and the work that followed, she transformed graphic storytelling into a powerful vehicle for memory, identity, exile, and resistance. Her voice was singular—sharp, compassionate, politically fearless, and profoundly human.

Many artists, writers, and cartoonists have spoken about the doors she opened simply by existing and creating so unapologetically.

Her work will continue to inspire generations of storytellers.
And thankfully, it remains with us.

Home shifts. Life shifts. The strange mix of uncertainty and possibility that often accompanies change. This month’s playlist became a soundtrack for moving through all of it, the restless moments, the hopeful ones, and the quieter spaces in between.

On days when I needed a reminder to keep moving forward, Madonna’s new single Bring Your Love delivered exactly that. Paired with Peggy Gou’s euphoric remix of I Feel So Free and the irresistible energy of the Dracula (JENNIE Remix), these were songs that lifted the mood and opened the windows.

When there was more energy in my body than I knew what to do with, I found myself reaching for the sharp edges and kinetic pulse of Wet Leg’s Catch These Fists and the hypnotic tension of Tricky & Mitch Sanders’ Because I Don’t Know.

And when the month softened, other songs stepped forward. Lola Young’s From Down Here met the heavier moments with honesty and tenderness, while the spacious, magnetic sound of Ed O’Brien offered something increasingly rare: room to pause, breathe, and simply be.

Like most months, this playlist isn’t a statement. It’s a snapshot.

A collection of songs that accompanied a season of transition, helped carry a little weight, and brought a little light.

By the time High As Hope arrived, Florence Welch had already built a career on grandeur , choirs, catharsis, and emotional combustion. But this record moved differently. It was quieter, more exposed, less interested in spectacle for its own sake.

Speaking about the album, Florence described wanting to focus on “the small within the big,” recognizing that the most transformative moments are often the most intimate.

Big God embodies that shift perfectly.The emotional premise is almost painfully simple: someone doesn’t reply to your message.

And yet the song stretches that feeling into something cavernous.

I say this often, and I mean it every time: I truly don’t know where I would be without music.
Not as background noise.
Not as entertainment.
But as refuge, companion, witness.

Madonna — Confessions II preview
Madonna released two tracks from her highly anticipated Confessions II, and both feel like invitations into different corners of her universe.
“I Feel So Free” opens with one of those unmistakably Madonna moments — half whisper, half confession — before dissolving into pure late-night euphoria. “Bring Your Love,” featuring Sabrina Carpenter, instantly brought flashes of the Madonna/Britney era back into the room: playful, glossy, knowingly seductive.

A strong month for Sabrina Carpenter, too — from joining Madonna on the Coachella stage to appearing alongside Stevie Nicks at the Met Gala. Pop lineage in real time.

Massive Attack — “Boots on the Ground” ft. Tom Waits
Dark, political, and deeply unsettling in the way only Massive Attack can be, “Boots on the Ground” confronts state violence and militarized power with unnerving precision. Tom Waits’ voice — appearing on his first recorded song since 2011 — sounds like gravel, smoke, and prophecy all at once.

Beck — “Ride Lonesome”
A melancholic acoustic drift that feels like driving through the desert with nowhere particular to go. “Ride Lonesome” marks a return to the tender folk-rock atmosphere of Sea Change and Morning Phase. Quietly devastating, in the best Beck tradition.

Charli XCX — “Rock Music”
“I think the dance floor is dead / so now we’re making rock music.”

Goodbye Brat Summer. Hello Rock Spring.

Charli’s latest single feels messy, loud, self-aware, and completely intentional. “Rock Music” follows her work on Wuthering Heights — the companion album to Emerald Fennell’s upcoming film starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie — as well as contributions to the soundtrack for David Lowery’s Mother Mary alongside Jack Antonoff and FKA twigs.
Pop continues to mutate in Charli’s hands, and she remains one of the most fascinating architects of that transformation.

Victor Jones — “Bills”
One of my favorite discoveries this month.
Victor Jones carries a certain modern-day poet energy with a touch of Tom Waits lurking beneath the surface. The NYC-based singer-songwriter blends dance punk, emo, and indie rock into something raw, theatrical, and strangely magnetic.

As for albums —

The Mother Mary soundtrack completely caught me off guard. Hearing Anne Hathaway fully step into pop-star mythology was not something I knew I needed, yet here we are.
The film — centered around a singer with a cult-like following and her estranged stylist and closest confidante, played by Michaela Coel — moves with a mood that feels both haunted and ecstatic. Fame as devotion. Performance as possession.

Meanwhile, the long-awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada arrived with a soundtrack built for fashion-week chaos and cinematic excess. The cast is stacked, but so far Lady Gaga and Doechii’s “RUNWAY” has completely stolen the conversation.

Maya Hawke — Maitreya Corso
Within the first few seconds of this record, it becomes clear that Maya Hawke understands the power of mise-en-scène. She drops you directly into the middle of a scene — a woman, a hotel lobby, a hot-mess boyfriend — and from there unfolds a deeply literary song cycle about identity, longing, and renewal.
It plays less like a traditional album and more like a novel quietly unraveling itself.

Arcade Fire — Open Your Heart or Die Trying
The album opens with an extended eight-minute version of the title track first introduced on Pink Elephant, immediately setting the tone for something expansive and emotionally unstable in the best Arcade Fire way.
Airy. Trembling. Apocalyptic but hopeful. A subliminal conversation unfolding beneath the surface.

José González — Against the Dying of the Light
His first album in five years strips everything back to the bare essentials: feather-light vocals, delicate guitar work, minimal overdubs. There’s a stillness to this record that feels increasingly rare.
Arguably González’s most intimate work since In Our Nature.

Raye continues to hold a certain emotional precision — “Winter Woman” staying with me longer than expected.
Beck’s “Ride Lonesome” opens up like a long road — quiet, expansive, somewhere between memory and motion.

And yes — Anne Hathaway in “Burial”.
A performance that catches you slightly off guard.
Held, committed, and more affecting than you’d think.

This playlist moves between light and weight, gloss and grit, presence and nostalgia.
It doesn’t rush.

This month leans into a quiet obsession of mine — the way music and film find each other, and how certain songs become inseparable from the scenes they inhabit.
A space I can endlessly return to, noticing new layers each time.

There’s something about a song placed within a frame, within a story, that alters it entirely.

But what his catalogue lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in consistency.

Hen’s Teeth is an intimate indie-folk record that feels like the darker, more melancholic companion to 2024’s Light Verse. There’s a sense of quiet maturity here — the kind that arrives when time sands away the excess and leaves only the essence.

6-Violet Grohl — What’s Heaven Without You
