A Palace Apartment in Need of Rescue

Apartment 1A occupies part of the south side of Clock Court at Kensington Palace. When Margaret and Snowdon received it, the rooms required extensive work. Damp, dry rot, roofing problems, and outdated services had to be addressed before the family could move in.

The renovations took several years and reportedly cost approximately £85,000, a considerable sum in the early 1960s. The apartment eventually contained around twenty rooms spread across several floors, with staff quarters, nurseries, reception rooms, private bedrooms, a kitchen, and spaces devoted to Snowdon’s photography and design work.

Although the building belonged to the royal estate, Margaret was closely involved in its decoration. She selected colors, considered finishes, and helped shape rooms that reflected both her royal upbringing and her sophisticated social life.

Standing behind iron gates at 1116 Ocean Drive, Casa Casuarina remains one of the most famous houses in Miami Beach. Its tiled courtyards, frescoed rooms, carved stone balconies, and gold-lined swimming pool seem inseparable from Gianni Versace. Yet the mansion already had a remarkable history before the designer first walked through its doors.

Versace purchased the property in 1992 and spent the final five years of his life transforming it into a deeply personal expression of his taste. The finished house brought together Italian craftsmanship, classical mythology, Spanish architecture, tropical gardens, and the vivid colors of South Beach.

It became a family residence, a glamorous gathering place, and one of Versace’s most ambitious creative projects.

The House Before Versace

Casa Casuarina was built in 1930 for Alden Freeman, an architect and heir to a Standard Oil fortune. Freeman drew inspiration from the Alcázar de Colón, the early 16th-century palace constructed for Diego Columbus in Santo Domingo.

The house was designed around an open courtyard, with coral stone, decorative tiles, arched passageways, fountains, and carved architectural fragments. Freeman also installed a series of medallions depicting historical figures, including Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Napoleon, Mussolini, and Lenin.

After Freeman’s death in 1937, the property was converted into an apartment building known as the Amsterdam Palace. By the time Versace discovered it more than fifty years later, it had deteriorated considerably, although many of its original architectural features had survived.

Gianni’s Discovery

Versace encountered Casa Casuarina during a visit to Miami in 1992. According to the story associated with the property, he noticed the bronze statue of the Kneeling Aphrodite near the entrance and asked to see the building.

He later recalled that his decision to purchase the house was instinctive.

The Mediterranean architecture held an immediate connection to his southern Italian upbringing. Versace had been born in Reggio Calabria, where classical ruins, coastal sunlight, religious decoration, and Greek mythology formed part of the surrounding visual culture.

He purchased Casa Casuarina for approximately $2.95 million. The following year, he acquired the neighboring Revere Hotel for around $3.7 million. Despite opposition from local preservationists, the hotel was demolished to make room for a new wing, garden, and swimming pool.

Versace reportedly spent about $32 million restoring and expanding the estate.

A wedding gift that changed Mustique

Colin Tennant, later Lord Glenconner, acquired Mustique in 1958 and gave Princess Margaret a parcel of land there in connection with her 1960 marriage to Antony Armstrong-Jones. The site occupied a secluded headland of roughly ten acres, with views over both sides of the island. Its name, Les Jolies Eaux, means “the beautiful waters.”

The gift gave Margaret something unusual within royal life: a home of her own, far from Britain’s palaces and official schedules. The island was still minimally developed, reached by small aircraft and boat, and its distance became part of its appeal. Margaret returned regularly, often staying for weeks and entertaining a circle of friends drawn from aristocratic, artistic, and international society.

Hercule Poirot’s apartment is one of television’s most memorable interiors. Its polished wood, geometric furniture, gleaming surfaces, carefully placed artwork, and immaculate symmetry reveal something about its owner before he says a word.

In Agatha Christie’s stories, Poirot chooses Whitehaven Mansions because of its modern appearance and precise proportions. For the celebrated television series starring David Suchet, that fictional address became a blend of real London architecture, purpose-built sets, and carefully sourced period furnishings.

Here is a closer look at the details that made Poirot’s home feel so convincing.

The real Whitehaven Mansions

The exterior shown throughout the series is Florin Court, an apartment building at 6–9 Charterhouse Square in London.

Designed by Guy Morgan and Partners and completed in 1936, Florin Court is a striking example of the Streamline Moderne style. Its curved wings, horizontal windows, pale brickwork, flat roof, and recessed central section created the perfect home for a detective fascinated by proportion and order.

The building originally contained 126 flats and was intended largely for businessmen who needed convenient accommodation near the City of London. It was highly modern for its time, with a steel frame, concrete floors, lifts, a roof terrace, a restaurant, a bar, club rooms, squash courts, and basement parking.

Today, Florin Court is Grade II listed. Although viewers know it as Poirot’s residence, the actual flats are much smaller than the apartment seen on television. The generous sitting room, office, bedroom, and connecting spaces were largely products of television set design.

Poirot’s apartment was modern, not traditionally luxurious

The interior is frequently described as Art Deco, although producer Brian Eastman offered a more precise description. He explained that the set represented “30s modern” design because the more decorative side of Art Deco would have been too flamboyant for Poirot.

That difference can be seen throughout the apartment. There are polished walnut surfaces, tubular steel details, geometric lines, glossy finishes, and carefully balanced arrangements. Yet the rooms rarely feel excessively ornamented.

Poirot appreciates expensive objects, but he wants them positioned correctly. Each chair, lamp, clock, vase, and framed picture appears to have its proper place.

The apartment reflects Agatha Christie’s descriptions

The production designers studied the clues Christie included in her novels.

Poirot’s sitting room is described as a square space furnished with modern, square furniture. Christie also mentions chromium, a geometrical sculpture, a modern desk near the window, small tables arranged throughout the room, a fireplace, a clock, a mirror, and chairs placed at definite angles.

The television apartment does not reproduce every detail literally. Mirrors above fireplaces could have reflected cameras and lighting equipment, for example, so artwork was often used in their place. Yet the spirit of Christie’s descriptions is present everywhere.

The large modern desk has particular significance. Poirot prefers its solid geometric form to the softer curves of antique furniture. It becomes both a working surface and a symbol of his mind: polished, organized, practical, and exact.

Mario Buatta decorated celebrated homes for Mariah Carey, Barbara Walters, Billy Joel, Henry Ford II, Malcolm Forbes, and many others. His most revealing interior, however, was the apartment he created for himself at 120 East 80th Street in Manhattan.

Buatta lived there from 1976 until his death in 2018. For more than four decades, the rooms continued to develop as he found paintings, furniture, porcelain, fabrics, and amusing objects that caught his eye. The apartment became a living record of his tastes and memories.

1. The apartment was inside a landmark townhouse

The setting already had a distinguished history. The George and Martha Whitney House at 120 East 80th Street was designed by the architectural firm Cross & Cross and built in 1929–30 for financier George Whitney and his wife, Martha.

Its Georgian-inspired red-brick façade, semicircular marble portico, Doric columns, mansard roof, and generous proportions recalled eighteenth-century English and American houses. The building later became a small cooperative with five residences. Buatta occupied the parlor floor, where tall ceilings and large windows gave his collections an appropriately grand framework.

Visitors entered through an octagonal hall before reaching the apartment’s full-width living room. The architecture provided formality; Buatta supplied the warmth, wit, color, and abundance.

Jeanne Lanvin built the oldest French couture house still in operation, dressed leading women of her era, and created a recognizable world of color and decoration. Her Paris home showed that vision in its most personal form.

In 1920, Lanvin purchased the former mansion of the Marquise Arconati-Visconti at 16 rue Barbet-de-Jouy in Paris’s seventh arrondissement. She commissioned the designer Armand-Albert Rateau to furnish a new reception wing and, later, several of her private rooms. Their collaboration produced one of the great surviving ensembles of French Art Deco.

Jeanne Lanvin and Armand-Albert Rateau

Lanvin met Rateau around 1920. He had trained at the École Boulle and worked for the decorating firm Alavoine before establishing his own practice. His interiors drew upon classical antiquity, Egypt, the Mediterranean, and the natural world. Bronze birds, stylized animals, carved foliage, marble, lacquer, and rich textiles became recurring features of his work.

The partnership soon extended beyond Lanvin’s home. In 1921, the pair established Lanvin Décoration, an interior-design business that remained active until 1925. Rateau also contributed to Lanvin’s boutiques and other properties. The apartment at rue Barbet-de-Jouy became the fullest expression of their shared decorative language.

Rateau furnished the mansion’s entrance hall, library, gallery, and dining room between 1921 and 1924. The bedroom, boudoir, and bathroom followed in 1924 and 1925. These private rooms survive as a group in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

The bedroom and the meaning of Lanvin blue

The bedroom is the apartment’s most famous room. Its walls were covered in blue silk, creating an enveloping field of color around the pale bed, gilded furniture, and embroidered fabrics.

The shade became known as “Lanvin blue.” Museum accounts connect Lanvin’s fondness for it to the blues found in the work of the early Renaissance painter Fra Angelico. She used blue throughout her creative world, including her fashion collections, packaging, and interiors.

The room also shows how carefully Rateau balanced color with material. Blue silk supplied depth, while ivory, gold, and pale upholstery kept the space luminous. The bed’s carved details and the decorative screen behind it gave the room architectural presence without overwhelming its relatively intimate scale.

This was a private bedroom, yet every surface was conceived with the completeness of a couture ensemble. Fabric, furniture, lighting, and ornament worked together.

The boudoir

The boudoir stood between the terrace and the bedroom. Its black-and-white marble floor formed a crisp geometric base for veined marble columns, molded wall panels, stucco reliefs, and corner vitrines lined in Lanvin blue silk.

A curved sofa upholstered in yellow-green silk added warmth. The combination of blue, pale stone, dark flooring, and soft yellow created a palette that still feels unusually assured.

The room also reveals Rateau’s skill with bronze lighting. His tall sculptural lamps functioned as decorative objects even when unlit. They gave the interior vertical rhythm and connected the furniture to the fantasy animals and plant forms found elsewhere in his work.

There was a time when a woman’s hair appointment could occupy most of an afternoon.

She entered through a polished door, surrendered her coat, changed into a salon robe, and moved through a carefully organized sequence of shampoo rooms, styling chairs, manicure tables, facial rooms, and rows of hooded dryers. Coffee arrived in china cups. Magazines were passed between clients. News traveled from one chair to the next.

For many women in the 1960s, the beauty parlor was part workshop, part social club, and part stage. It was where appearances were prepared before weddings, luncheons, business trips, society dinners, television appearances, and ordinary weeks that still required a carefully arranged head of hair.

The decade produced two competing visions of beauty. One belonged to the bouffant, the lacquered updo, the French roll, the hairpiece, and the weekly shampoo-and-set. The other belonged to the geometric bob, the sharp fringe, the five-point cut, and hair designed to move naturally.

Both worlds existed at once.

Jacqueline Kennedy’s sculpted coiffures, Princess Grace’s elaborate evening styles, Babe Paley’s impeccable finish, and Audrey Hepburn’s elegant updos depended upon exceptional hairdressers. At the same time, Mary Quant, Peggy Moffitt, Nancy Kwan, and Mia Farrow were helping introduce a younger, lighter, more architectural approach.

Behind every famous photograph stood a salon, a stylist, a team of assistants, and hours of preparation.

Parisian fashion history can be traced through dresses, sketches, perfumes, and photographs. It can also be followed through the streets of the city itself.

A name such as Chanel, Dior, Lanvin, or Balenciaga became inseparable from a particular doorway. Behind it stood reception rooms, mirrored staircases, fitting salons, private offices, model dressing rooms, and workshops filled with highly trained seamstresses. These buildings gave each house a physical identity before fashion became a global industry.

The geography changed with the decades. Nineteenth-century couture gathered around the Rue de la Paix. During the early twentieth century, Rue Cambon, Place Vendôme, and the Faubourg Saint-Honoré became central to Parisian luxury. After the Second World War, Avenue Montaigne and Avenue George V emerged as the defining streets of postwar couture. Paris fashion gradually moved westward, carrying its clients, ateliers, and international influence with it. (Galliera)

This companion guide looks beyond the finished clothes and enters the houses themselves. These were commercial businesses, artistic studios, social institutions, and highly organized worlds where an address could become as famous as the designer’s name.

What happened inside a couture house?

Before looking at the individual maisons, it helps to understand what a couture address contained.

A wealthy client did not enter a shop filled with racks of finished dresses. She was received by staff who understood her wardrobe, position, measurements, and social calendar. Designs were presented on house models. Once a client selected a garment, the dress was adapted to her body and preferences through a series of fittings.

Charles Frederick Worth helped establish this system during the nineteenth century. His house prepared designs that were shown on live models, allowing clients to choose before the garments were made individually in the workshops. Women traveled to Paris to order complete wardrobes containing morning dresses, afternoon ensembles, evening gowns, tea gowns, and clothes for weddings or elaborate society balls. By the time Christian Dior opened his house, a major couture establishment could contain tailoring and dressmaking ateliers, a salon for presentations, a cabine for the models, private fitting rooms, offices, and a designer’s studio. The glamorous salon represented only the visible portion of the house. Above it, sometimes across several floors, hundreds of hours of labor transformed drawings and lengths of fabric into clothes fitted to one woman.

The Kennedys are usually remembered through elections, weddings, assassinations, beach houses, Senate campaigns, and the mythology of Hyannis Port.

A second story runs beneath all of it: where they were educated.

Again and again, the same schools appear in the family record: Boston Latin, Sacred Heart, Choate, Harvard, Milton, Miss Porter’s, Radcliffe, Brown, Georgetown, Virginia Law, and Andover.

These schools carried real social meaning. They were gateways into status, power, and public expectation. They taught the Kennedys how to speak, compete, charm, rebel, and survive a famous name.

For Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., education offered access to a world that had once kept Irish Catholics at the edge of Boston power. For Rose Kennedy, it was tied to faith, manners, order, and Catholic formation. For their children, it became something heavier: a test of worth.

Some Kennedys rose beautifully inside that system. Others fought it. A few were wounded by it. Many of the most revealing moments in the family’s history happened in classrooms, dormitories, chapels, yearbooks, exam rooms, and headmasters’ offices.

The Pattern Behind the Schools

The Kennedy education story begins before Jack, Bobby, Ted, or Jackie.

Patrick J. Kennedy and John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald did not come from inherited academic privilege. P.J. Kennedy was born in East Boston in 1858, the son of Irish famine immigrants. Honey Fitz was born in Boston’s North End in 1863 and attended Boston Latin before briefly studying at Harvard Medical School.

Neither man earned a college degree.

Both understood what schools could unlock.

By the time their children came of age, education had become one of the family’s clearest routes into power. For an Irish Catholic family in Boston, a school like Boston Latin carried enormous symbolic weight and signaled movement toward the center of American influence.

No one carried that belief more intensely than Joseph P. Kennedy Sr.

Joe Kennedy, Rose Kennedy, and the Family Standard

Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. understood elite education, along with its limits.

He attended parish schools first, then Boston Latin, then Harvard. At Harvard, he joined Hasty Pudding, played baseball, and tried to enter the Porcellian Club, one of the university’s most exclusive final clubs.

He was rejected.

Decades later, even wealth, political access, and an ambassadorship could not fully erase the memory of the old Boston doors that had stayed closed.

Joe Kennedy would become one of the richest men in America. He made money in banking, Hollywood, Wall Street, and business. In 1934, Franklin Roosevelt named him the first chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. In 1938, he became Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s.

Still, certain forms of acceptance had not come easily.

That experience shaped the way he raised his children. His sons would have Harvard degrees. His daughters would have polish, Catholic formation, and social fluency. The next generation would be harder to dismiss.

Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy brought another educational inheritance into the family.

She wanted to attend Wellesley, but her father refused. Instead, she was educated within the Sacred Heart system, first in Boston and then in Europe. In 1908, she was left at the Blumenthal Academy of the Sacred Heart in Vaals, in the Netherlands, near the German border. The school was housed in a former medieval castle and run with the formality of the Sacred Heart tradition.

When she married Joe Kennedy in 1914, she carried that training into the Kennedy home.

Rose watched her children closely. She recorded their health, exams, schools, and milestones on index cards. Childhood was organized, measured, and monitored.

Joe brought ambition. Rose brought Catholic formation. Together, they created a family culture where education became preparation for public life.
