The difference is that digital products can observe your behavior, learn from it and continuously modify themselves in response. The interface is no longer static. It becomes a behavioral machine.

And Meta has built one of the most powerful behavioral machines in history.

That should make us uncomfortable.

Because there is a profound moral difference between making something easier to use and making something difficult to stop using.

Meta blurred that distinction deliberately.

A fifteen-year-old should not be expected to possess the same understanding of persuasive technology as the company designing it.

They want us to imagine that a teenager freely chooses every hour of scrolling, every notification check, every comparison spiral and every late-night session. They want us to treat the consequences as a failure of parenting, discipline or personal responsibility.

You cannot claim that design creates culture when it is convenient and then claim that design has nothing to do with culture when the consequences become uncomfortable.

You cannot call a product innovative because it knows how to keep a teenager online and then call the resulting anxiety, isolation and compulsive use an unfortunate side effect.

The effect a product has on human behavior is not separate from the product.

It is part of the product.

And Meta’s product is not simply a social network. It is a system designed to capture attention, convert emotion into engagement and convert engagement into revenue.

That is why the company’s motives matter.

This is not an argument against technology. It is an argument against pretending that Meta’s commercial incentives are aligned with the wellbeing of its youngest users.

And if behavior can be designed, behavior can also be designed responsibly.

Where This Comes From

This approach borrows from the Random Input technique developed by Edward de Bono as part of his work on Lateral Thinking.

De Bono’s premise is simple:

You just get a slightly better version of the same idea.

Creative teams need to trust that leadership will not retreat at the first sign of discomfort. Leadership needs to trust that the team understands the brand and the business realities. And clients need to trust that exploration is not recklessness.

Trust is built in small moments. In how feedback is delivered. In whether credit is shared. In whether risk is protected when it is intelligent and intentional.

When a team trusts the client relationship, they explore further. They propose the idea that might feel slightly dangerous but culturally relevant. Without trust, they default to safe.

Safe rarely builds brands.

Expectations and the Freedom to Explore

Corporate environments run on expectations. Revenue targets. Timelines. Quarterly reports. Creativity runs on possibility.

The role of a creative leader is to build a bridge between those two worlds.

Set expectations early. Define what success looks like in business terms. Then create protected space for exploration before convergence. Divergence first. Judgment later.

I often tell my teams that exploration is not chaos. It is structured curiosity. We explore within the boundaries of the strategy. We experiment within the realities of the market.

Freedom without direction becomes noise. Direction without freedom becomes decoration.

The sweet spot is tension. And tension, when managed well, produces energy.

Managing Energy, Not Just Output

At its core, managing creativity is managing energy. Creative people do not give their best because they are told to. They give their best when they feel seen, challenged, and trusted.

And when the machine breathes, culture moves.

That is where real creative leadership begins.

Speed has become our dominant language. Faster turnarounds. Faster tools. Faster answers. And while acceleration has its place, it is not the same thing as creativity. True originality does not emerge from urgency alone. It emerges from attention, from patience, and from a willingness to slow down just enough to see what others overlook.

Which brings us to Salvador Dalí.

Yes, the melting clocks. Yes, the cultivated eccentricity. But behind the spectacle was a rigorously intentional creative mind. Dalí did not wait for inspiration. He engineered conditions for it. He treated creativity not as a personality trait, but as a discipline. One that could be trained, provoked, and repeated.

In 1948, he published 50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship. It is an unusual book. Part manual, part manifesto, part psychological experiment. It is also deeply practical. Specific. Demanding. And quietly one of the most useful texts on creative practice ever written. Especially for an industry obsessed with novelty and allergic to craft.

What follows are three practices drawn directly from Dalí’s working methods. They are not metaphors. They are instructions. And if applied with seriousness, they can fundamentally change how you work.

1. The Hypnagogic Nap

(Sleeping with a Key)

Dalí deliberately worked in the threshold between waking and sleep, a neurological state known as hypnagogia. This is the moment when logic loosens and associations surface freely. Rather than drifting past it unconsciously, he designed a way to capture it.

His method was precise. Sit upright in a chair. Hold a heavy metal key loosely in your hand. Place a plate on the floor beneath you. Allow yourself to drift toward sleep. The instant your body crosses the threshold, your hand relaxes. The key drops. The sound wakes you. You immediately record whatever image, idea, or sensation was forming.

If you try this, sit rather than lie down. Keep a notebook and pen within reach. A spoon and a bowl work just as well. Give yourself twenty minutes. What you collect in this state is unfiltered. No inner critic. No strategic overlay. Just raw material.

This is not mysticism. Contemporary neuroscience has validated the creative richness of hypnagogia. Research from the MIT McGovern Institute shows that this transitional state enables forms of associative thinking largely inaccessible during full wakefulness.

2. Staring at Imperfections Until They Become Something

This practice trains the mind to impose meaning onto ambiguity and then use that meaning as creative fuel. It is divergent thinking without the theater of brainstorming. A way to bypass familiar solutions and access interpretations that feel personal, unexpected, and alive.

The paranoiac-critical method remains referenced by institutions like the Museum of Modern Art because it reveals something fundamental. Creativity is not about generating ideas from nothing. It is about learning how to see.

3. Obsessive Copying of Masters

Before Dalí became Dalí, he copied. Relentlessly. He reproduced works by Johannes Vermeer, Raphael, and Diego Velázquez line by line, stroke by stroke.

He believed technical mastery was not optional. It was the structure that allowed imagination to take form. Without craft, experimentation collapses into noise.

His instruction was uncompromising. Choose one master whose work unsettles you with its quality. Copy a single piece in full, by hand, without shortcuts. Not to imitate. To understand. To feel where decisions are made. Where restraint matters. Where excellence actually lives.

For those of us in advertising and design, the translation is direct. Rebuild a campaign you admire from scratch. Retype a piece of copy you wish you had written. Reconstruct a layout manually. Admiration skips over details. Reproduction exposes them.

This is how taste is developed. Through repetition. Through humility. Through attention.

A Necessary Word About AI

AI-assisted creative tools are remarkable. Their speed and capacity for pattern recognition are genuinely impressive. Train them on enough material and they will produce work that closely resembles the best of what already exists.

That has value.

But Dalí’s methods point in a different direction. They resist optimization. They require friction, patience, and intentional slowness. They demand that ideas move through your body, your perception, your unconscious. They cannot be outsourced because they depend on your projections, your associations, your lived experience.

AI is a tool. Dalí’s approach is a practice.

The industry is exceptionally good at adopting tools and notoriously bad at sustaining practices. The space between those two is not a liability. It is an opportunity.

An Invitation

If you work with people who are talented but stuck. Producing work that is competent, polished, and strangely hollow. Share this with them. Not as a critique. As an opening.

The Culture Designer exists to start conversations the industry often avoids in its pursuit of efficiency and scale. Dalí published his secrets in 1948.

They are still relevant. Still demanding. Still waiting.

Others disrupt culture.

David Carson belongs to the latter.

Long before design became synonymous with frameworks, UX audits, and conversion logic, Carson showed something most people were not ready to see. Design does not exist to behave. It exists to communicate. And communication is emotional before it is rational.

He did not decorate messages. He challenged the authority of how messages were supposed to look, feel, and behave.

That distinction matters.

How Carson Influenced the Way I Think

Carson did not teach me style. He taught me permission.

Permission to trust instinct.

Permission to value feeling over explanation.

Permission to accept that confusion can be intentional, and sometimes necessary.

His work made one thing clear to me early on. Legibility is not the same as understanding. Clarity is not the same as impact.

I stopped seeing typography as a neutral container for language. Letters became tone. Rhythm. Weight. Silence. Noise. Presence.

Design stopped being about alignment and started being about consequence.

That shift has stayed with me ever since.

Why He Belongs in Design History

Design history often favors those who build order. Carson deserves recognition because he exposed the limits of that order.

Modernism promised neutrality. Carson showed that neutrality was never real.

Every grid carries ideology.

Every layout reflects power.

Every decision signals belief.

By breaking visual expectations, Carson forced viewers to slow down, react, and feel something before understanding it. He treated design less like engineering and more like human perception.

That alone secures his place. Not as an outlier. As a necessary counterweight.

Relevant Now. Quietly Forgotten.

Here is the contradiction.

Carson’s thinking is deeply relevant today. But his influence is fading.

Current tools reward repeatability. Systems. Templates. Consistency at scale. They encourage safety. They discourage risk. They optimize sameness.

Carson’s work resists all of that.

It does not scale easily.

It does not live comfortably inside brand guidelines.

It does not perform well when stripped of context and emotion.

So it gets archived. Referenced. Reduced to a moment.

But his ideas are still present every time a designer chooses expression over convention. Every time emotion wins over efficiency. Every time something feels human instead of polished.

Carson never left. We just stopped listening.

The Lesson We Keep Avoiding

Design is not neutral.

Design is not objective.

Design is not a service function alone.

It shapes culture whether we admit it or not.

Not everything needs to be frictionless.

Not everything needs to be optimized.

Not everything needs to be explained.

Some things need to interrupt.

That is the lesson Carson left behind. And it is one we would do well to remember.

Culture does not move forward by consensus.

It moves forward when someone ignores the manual.

Detail defines trust. Think about typography: a single letter spaced too closely makes the word feel tense, almost anxious. A little too far apart, and rhythm breaks. Kerning is not decoration; it is choreography. The distance between characters decides whether a reader glides or stumbles. The designer becomes conductor, orchestrating silence between notes so that meaning flows without friction.

Grids work the same way. They are the architecture of design, not the aesthetic itself. A grid keeps the designer honest. It disciplines the impulse to decorate, reminding us that consistency is what gives creativity freedom to move. Alignment is the handrail of understanding. When things line up, the eye relaxes. The viewer does not need to decipher; they can feel.

Visual flow is empathy translated into geometry. Each element guides attention to the next, like stepping stones across a river. The smallest adjustment in distance can shift the entire current of focus. A designer who understands this knows that emotion is built from precision.

Design is milimetric because perception is fragile. A single pixel, a single shift, changes how something is read, trusted, remembered. Beauty may seem effortless, but it is constructed on grids, calibration, and care. The best design feels human precisely because it was measured with such devotion.

As artificial intelligence becomes embedded in every layer of marketing and creative production, we are witnessing a profound shift. AI is no longer the experiment; it is the infrastructure. From concept development to campaign execution, it accelerates, refines, and often predicts with remarkable precision. Yet within that efficiency lies an emerging paradox: the easier it becomes to generate creative output, the rarer genuine human creativity will feel.
We are entering a stage of aesthetic abundance but emotional scarcity. When every brand can access the same AI engines, trained on identical data and cultural patterns, differentiation no longer comes from execution. It comes from intuition. The next competitive advantage won’t be faster production or broader reach; it will be the authentic emotional depth that only human creators can bring.

As a culture designer, I see this as an inflection point. The creative industry has always revolved around innovation, but innovation without emotional intelligence risks becoming noise. AI gives us a mirror to our own process; it shows us what can be replicated, which forces us to confront what cannot. That boundary is precisely where human value will now multiply.

The question for all of us is whether creative work made by humans will hold greater value as AI-generated design becomes the norm. My view is yes. In a marketplace soon saturated with algorithmic aesthetics, the pieces that truly move people will be those that reflect lived experience, contradiction, and perspective. These are the fingerprints of humanity.

The future of advertising is not about resisting AI; it is about transcending it. As technology handles the repetition, we return to what art and commerce were always meant to do: create meaning, not just outputs. And meaning, as ever, remains profoundly (and beautifully) human
