I’ve learnt more from actually doing it than I ever could have before starting. If anyone is reading this pondering whether to start their own business (interior design related or not)… starting is the biggest hurdle and figuring it all out along the way is actually part of the fun!

So, one year in, here are the things that have surprised me, challenged me, and changed the way I design and run CURATED by Katie.

1. People really do need affordable interior design

Obviously I believed this before (it’s the reason I started CURATED), but the past year has definitely confirmed it for me.

We’re surrounded by more beautiful interiors than ever. Social media, Pinterest, magazines and now AI are constantly showing us perfectly put-together homes and telling us what we should be buying. But I think that makes it harder to work out what you genuinely like, what works together and what you’re buying because you love it vs. because the algorithm has sent it your way 25 times on Instagram.

For me, accessible interior design is about normal people with normal budgets being able to avoid decision paralysis and make good choices with their money - rather than investing in a sofa, rug or dining table they end up hating six months later because they haven’t planned the whole space.

The interiors world can still feel incredibly out of reach (more on that another day) and I really don’t think good design advice should only be available to people spending tens-if-not-hundreds of thousands of pounds on their homes.

2. My previous jobs in interior design sales, processes & admin has come in more handy than any design experience

Before I worked as a designer I spent years working on the sales/support side of the interiors industry, and I genuinely think that experience has been just as useful in running CURATED as my actual design experience.

There is SO much admin involved in running a business. Emails, invoices, chasing payments, taxes, project management & timelines, presentations, client communication, working with suppliers, tracking finances, ordering samples, sourcing lists and even responding to enquiries…

Weirdly, I enjoy this all a little too much. My brain is definitely a processor as well as a creative one. I love a list, a new spreadsheet, analysing data. I love making a new system for something that probably didn’t need a system in the first place.

It’s probably taken me the full year to refine all of the above and get them to a place where it’s both easy to manage and I’m able to track the data I want to see - and easily.

Plot twist for aspiring designers - having the creative ideas is actually only one part of being able to turn them into a fully functioning business.

3. Actually understanding what the client wants is more important than designing something I love

This is probably one of the biggest things I’ve learnt as someone who hasn’t had a traditional design education and very much learnt on the job.

When I first started, I definitely designed for myself first and the client second. Not intentionally - I think I was just so happy that someone was paying me to design something that I wanted to make the best and most beautiful scheme possible to me.

And although those clients still loved their designs, I think my work has become so much better since I started really trying to understand the person I’m designing for.

What do they already own? What do they actually use the room for? What colours do they naturally gravitate towards? What would they never buy? How brave do they actually want to be? What are they happy to spend money on?

And sometimes it means getting rid of something I personally love because it just isn’t right for them.

There’s definitely an element of letting your ego go. It isn’t my house. The end result doesn’t need to be the room I would create for myself - it needs to be a room that feels like them, just hopefully a much better version than they could have pulled together alone. My designs over the past few months are really a testament to that learning curve, and I’ve received some of my best client feedback to date because of it.

4. I’ve stopped being so uptight about giving alternatives

I used to be quite rigid with my schemes. My thinking was: I’ve designed this as a complete scheme, everything works together for a reason, therefore changing things = ruining it.

But, realistically, people want to put their own stamp on their homes. They might love the overall scheme but not be 100% sold on a particular lamp, or want to spend less on X than X.

Of course, I have my T&Cs so clients can’t change absolutely everything - there has to be a line somewhere! But I’ve become much more flexible about giving alternatives. I can still say which one I think works best and my reasoning why, but giving someone a few options that I know all work within the scheme gives them some ownership over the final result which I find is a great balance.

And, crucially, if they hate the lamp I’ve chosen, I’d much rather give them two other lamps that work than have them go off and buy something completely random that doesn’t and throws the whole design off.

5. Creating social content is HARDER and more TIME CONSUMING than it looks!

I have a newfound respect for all the content creators out there. Ashamedly, a year ago I completely misunderstood the influencer industry and probably would have said it was an easy job. I can now very confidently say that it is not. Researching, coming up with ideas, sourcing products, filming, editing, writing captions, actually posting the thing or working out when to schedule it… it consumes a ridiculous amount of my business time and energy.

There have been far too many occasions where I’ve spent hours making a reel that is approximately 90 seconds long.

But it’s also where the vast majority of my enquiries come from, so it’s a very important part of running CURATED by Katie and one that I need to keep up.

I’ve still got a fair amount of work to do to streamline this process - prepping my videos in advance rather than making them up on the day, not letting myself ramble on by sticking to key points I want to get across - which in turn is easier and quicker to edit (sometimes my footage is 15 min + long!)

6. Post the content you actually like

Related to the above - but probably something I need to remind myself of constantly.

Every time I get too bogged down in numbers, content pillars, hooks, posting schedules, what other people are doing and asking AI what I should be posting, I start to hate it. I overthink everything, it takes me twice as long and I end up not posting anything at all.

When I’m more fluid with it - I have an idea, I think it’s interesting, I make it and put it out - I enjoy it so much more. And it feels so much more authentic to us all.

I’m not going to completely ignore what performs well. It is a business and social media is a huge part of how people find me. But I’m trying to get better at using all of that as guidance rather than letting it dictate everything I put out there.

7. Restraint

This has probably been one of my biggest learning curves as a designer. I love colour, pattern and rooms with lots going on, so ‘less is more’ has never really felt like something that applies to the way I design. But I’ve learnt that restraint is actually more important when you’re designing with lots of colour and pattern.

Not every item in a room needs to be the hero piece. Sometimes it’s about choosing the one fabric, wallpaper, piece of furniture or colour that you really want to sing, and then knowing when everything else needs to quieten down around it.

I definitely used to think that if I loved five amazing things, putting all five of them in the same room would make the room five times better. Unfortunately, it does not work like that.

The plainer, quieter pieces are often the things that make the more interesting choices actually stand out. And I think learning when to stop adding is just as important as knowing what to add in the first place.

8. A profound effect on my personal responsibility and ambition

Running my own business has had a much bigger effect on me personally than I ever expected it to. There’s something about having something that is entirely yours that forces you to take responsibility. If something doesn’t get done, doesn’t work or doesn’t go quite how I’d hoped, ultimately that comes back to me. There’s no one else managing my time, telling me what I need to do next or making sure things happen.

Weirdly, I’ve found that sense of responsibility has filtered into my personal life too. I’m more organised, more proactive and generally much better at just doing the thing rather than waiting for the right time or for someone else to do it.

It’s also massively grown my confidence. Not just professionally - although speaking to clients, putting a price on my own work, selling my services and backing my decisions has definitely done that - but socially too.

I had a rough year or two at work before starting the business, which completely knocked my confidence professionally and socially (although, ironically, I think it was ultimately one of the things that pushed me to start CURATED in the first place).

Putting myself out there so publicly was something I found unbelievably uncomfortable at first, wondering what people would say behind closed doors (I still do wonder…). But I think repeatedly doing things that are outside my comfort zone has made me much more confident generally.

And finally, it’s made me realise how ambitious I actually am. I’ve always been driven, but having something of my own has given that drive somewhere very tangible to go. Seeing that the work I put in can directly turn into a new client, a new opportunity, more income or a better business is incredibly motivating.

I might read this again in August 2027 and have completely changed my mind on half of it and probably have a load more points to add. But I think that’s also the point - I’m learning as I go, changing things when they’re not working, and slowly figuring out what I actually want this business to be.

For now, I’m very excited to see what year two brings!

Today we’re easing into the New Year with 5 classic interior items you can use in any project and are therefore guaranteed to withstand fluctuating trends.

1. A well-made, simple silhouette sofa in a timeless fabric

Perhaps an obvious one to start with, but a well-made sofa is one of the smartest investments you can make. Not only does it save you money in the long run, choosing a classic, simple shape is something that’s often overlooked.

Sofa manufacturers will always release trend-led designs, but they’ll also keep a core range of “classics” - elegant forms that have existed for centuries and are reused time and time again for a reason.

There are so many other ways to introduce trends into your space without regretting a £3k purchase. When it’s one of the biggest investments in your home, choose wisely and opt for something timeless - a sofa you’ll still love as your taste evolves and your lifestyle changes.

2. Natural materials: jute, rattan, sisal, timber

Think rugs, tables, lighting (but not all at once unless you’re going for an earthy, boho look). Natural materials ground a space, make us feel calm around them, connecting us to the outside world. For that reason they can never be ‘out of style’. They also age beautifully over time, adding depth, character & story.

3. Wrought iron lighting (or good lookalikes…)

This is something I come back to in almost every project. I’m VERY drawn to simple iron lamp bases and understated chandeliers - they add structure and contrast without ever feeling heavy. It’s a true classic that works in almost any space, from traditional homes to more contemporary interiors and you can find them across a range of suppliers. If you want to give it a more design-led or ‘trendy’ feel, switching up the shade is an easy solution. That said, in my opinion these pieces look beautiful pared back with a simple linen shade.

I love this new lamp from OKA. The tripod base detail gives interest and makes it a bit different!

The White Company also have a great range of this style across table lamps, pendants & floor lamps. I love the simplicity of this glass pendant!

4. A great cabinet or sideboard

A great sideboard is one of those pieces you invest in once and can keep for a lifetime. They often cost a little more upfront, but when you get it right, it becomes a truly versatile piece - whether you’re using it for storage, display or to ground a room. I particularly love a heavy timber sideboard with some panelling/carving detail to the doors like this one from Swoon which has been a long-time favourite of mine. Add two big table lamps at either end and some artwork and you’ve nailed the brief.

I’ve also loved this one from West Elm for quite a while now. It’s more of a statement piece, but the black lacquer frame, walnut check doors & handles have made me drooool!

5. A great ottoman

Who doesn’t love to put their feet up in front of the TV after a long day? Investing in an ottoman is one of those essentials I can’t live without and a piece of furniture you’ll always use. They can be expensive but you occasionally come across a well priced one, and in a patterned fabric (no boring ottomans around here). I’m going to do a full roundup of my favourites soon but here are two great options if you’re in the market:

This footstool from John Lewis is classic in design but has a fun, timeless fabric pattern which I love.

Ever thought Neptune was out of budget? Well I have news for you: this upholstered bench is under £400 and has a range of fabrics to choose from (the prices per fabric do vary but not by much). This is one of my secret weapons in projects as not only is it very reasonably priced, you can order the fabric samples and see how they work with other pieces in your scheme. Such a good high-street option!

Getting these key pieces right, in my opinion, makes everything else feel easier. They form the backbone of a scheme, giving you the freedom to play with colour, texture and trends through more affordable, easily changeable pieces.

“How do I make my home feel more put together?”

You know that feeling when you walk into a space and everything just works. The colours, the furniture, the textures ~ but you can’t quite put your finger on why it works?

The secret isn’t following rules, styles or trends. It’s about layering, collecting pieces you genuinely love and reflect you, and creating a space that feels effortless but intentional.

Today’s post is giving away all my secrets as a professional designer, with easy, accessible tips and tricks to help you make your home feel more cohesive and give it that professionally designed feel.

1. Don’t stick to one style.

This might be my biggest ‘against the interior design rulebook’ rule ~ and I could go on about it for hours.

We all see beautifully designed dream homes in magazines and on social media. While some absolutely speak to what I’m talking about, many don’t ~ they stick rigidly to one style, one material palette, one tone of timber, one look. This leads so many people to believe you can’t mix and match styles, materials, colour or pattern.

But when interiors do this, they often feel bland and soulless. What happens if you’re given a sentimental gift that doesn’t ‘fit’? Or you fall in love with a piece of furniture that clashes with everything else? You should still buy it. If you love it, it belongs in your home.

Spaces often feel flat when everything matches ~ the same timbers, fabrics, and metals (I’m looking at you, Scandi minimalism). When you layer a variety of eras, textures and finishes throughout, it creates a space that feels collected over time, full of character and warmth. The key is to treat the whole room this way.

Of course, balance matters! One Regency piece in an otherwise pared-back room will look odd, but a thoughtful mix across the board will feel effortless.

2. Don’t be afraid to clash your patterns.

There is an art to this, but here’s my cheat sheet:

• Stick within your colour palette (3–4 main tones).

• Mix scales of pattern ~ a large-scale print with a ticking stripe balance each other perfectly.

• Think about the overall feel: floral, geometric or abstract.

This is how you create what I like to call ‘cohesive non-cohesion’ ~ rooms that feel intentionally mismatched, but just work.

3. Collect personal pieces.

This might seem like an obvious one, but there’s an added step to it. When you pick up trinkets, postcards, artwork or prints from trips away, make sure to have them framed. I’m definitely guilty of buying lovely pieces on holidays that hold special memories — only for them to sit in a cupboard for three years without ever seeing the light of day. Framing them (whether professionally or from the high street) adds an extra layer of design and intention. These small reminders tell your story and make your space feel lived-in yet still pulled together.

4. Mix in antiques and second-hand finds.

Vintage pieces bring instant depth and patina. A worn timber, an old chair, or a chipped ceramic adds the texture and warmth that brand-new furniture or accessories never can. I love to scour Facebook Marketplace, eBay & flea markets to see what I can find, though admittedly these are best outside of London. Most of my interior pieces are second-hand and I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything for over £150. Adding character + saving money = win win.

5. Stop trying to copy magazine interiors.

You can take inspiration from designer spaces but remember: they often cost £100k+ and feature incredible handmade, bespoke pieces that are almost impossible to replicate. This is why so many people feel like their own homes are lacking when they try to copy them. If you’re decorating with more affordable pieces, focus on capturing the feeling or palette of those spaces, not a perfect replica. Your home should look & feel like you, not a showroom.

6. Don’t feel pressured to buy high-end for quality or sustainability.
We’re constantly made to feel that “good taste” or “sustainability” means buying designer, hand-made-in-the-UK pieces which are naturally incredibly expensive, but if you love something, that’s a good enough reason for me. A home filled with things you genuinely adore will always look and feel more authentic (to you and others) than one filled with things you bought to tick a box or follow a style that isn’t quite you. Plot twist = if you buy something from the high street but fall in love with it for the long term, that can also be sustainable.

7. Repeat linking elements.

This is an easy one to achieve: to make your space flow, repeat small details: metals, finishes, colours or tones. If your kitchen pendant is brass, echo it in a picture frame or side table. These subtle threads throughout your home tie it all together and make it feel more designed.

The takeaway: A cohesive home isn’t about perfection ~ it’s about layering what you love, over time, with confidence.

Try this: Choose one room and repeat a colour or material in three different spots and you’ll be surprised how much more “pulled together” it feels. Let me know how you get on!

With all that going on, I thought it was the perfect time to finally share a closer look at one of these projects. This will be the first in a new series of CURATED by Katie Case Studies, where I take you behind the scenes of my design process.

We’re starting with one of the schemes I designed for my client in Glasgow. The building itself is a beautiful listed Georgian townhouse with heritage features, including a tall ceilings, detailed coving, huge windows and a grand entrance hall with a central staircase.

That said, one of the rooms I was asked to design was a TV room/snug on the lower-ground floor. Historically, the lower-ground floor in Georgian homes was considered the service level. It often housed the kitchen, scullery, laundry, and storage rooms, along with quarters for household staff. These rooms were functional rather than decorative, so they usually had lower ceilings, smaller windows, and less natural light than the more formal reception & living rooms on the main floors above. On top of that, the room has a few extra quirks: it sits between the kitchen and dining room, with entryways on two walls and a window on the third, leaving just one full wall to work with.

The client wanted the room to feel cosy and inviting, a space they could relax in every day. It also needed to work as the only TV room in the house, while sitting between the kitchen and dining areas, so focusing on flow and practicality were essential alongside the challenges with walls & lighting mentioned above.

The final concept for this scheme centered around adding lots of warm, rich colour and texture throughout the space to offset the naturally cooler NE light; naturally I was drawn to deep ochres, strong greens & vibrant reds. I loved the idea of a built-in bookcase with a sofa set within, a nod to traditional design that complements the heritage of the building while adding lots of character to an otherwise plain room. To keep things feeling fresh and modern, I proposed to paint the joinery in a bold red (Bamboozle by Farrow & Ball) with feature wallpaper & a mirror behind the sofa to bounce the limited light around, and pops of bright colour throughout the room.

Coming in from the kitchen on the right-hand side, the first thing you see is the client’s 140x100 cm old-school film poster which is a bold mix of bright green, red, and blue. It immediately sets the tone for the room; guests know exactly what they’re stepping into.

To get the layout working, I proposed extending the wall leading into the dining room so the TV could be centered with the seating area. This also helped pull the far side of the room into the main scheme, making the space feel more cohesive.

A rug was essential to soften the dark timber flooring, and I fell in love with this one from Nordic Knots called Walled Garden ~ perfectly named, since the window looks straight out onto the garden. The Dawdler Sofa from Loaf is paired with an antique ottoman from Kopp Antiques, balanced with a side table, lamp & lampshade from OKA and Pooky. To highlight the feature wall behind the sofa, I added wall lights with emerald green silk shades within the joinery against a backdrop of patterned wallpaper and a mirror.

Because my client loves blending traditional pieces with more contemporary, mid-century design, I introduced a statement floor lamp and armchair in the corner coupled with a loose cushion in the same design as the wallpaper. This not only brightens up a darker spot, but ties both sides of the room and gives flexibility to pull up extra seating for film nights with friends.

The end result is a room full of layered colour and texture ~ vibrant but still completely livable. It slots perfectly into the flow of the house, linking the kitchen, TV room, and dining room in a way that feels natural and easy. I’m so in love with how it turned out (and happily, so were my clients!). The pop of bright turquoise in the sofa, paired with the Matisse print, is the final touch that pulls the whole design together. It’s the perfect autumn bedding update ~ adding depth and texture to your bedroom interior while also bringing that extra layer of literal warmth. 4. H&M Home Tablecloth

I’m loving this tablecloth from H&M Home ~ the seasonal fruit motif makes it perfect for autumn hosting. Whether you’re planning a cosy dinner party or a casual gathering, the contrast of the green leaves against the deep blackberry and fig tones creates a beautiful backdrop for your table setting ~ think dark brown/chestnut coloured candlesticks and cabbage leaf ceramics!

5. TOAST Lily Pearmain Stripe Jug

This glazed terracotta jug from TOAST is gorgeous ~ handmade by a ceramicist based in South-East London. I love how it’s styled here with a bright flower for contrast, but it would look just as striking filled with seasonal dried hops or autumnal flowers. A timeless ceramic that brings warmth and texture to any space.

6. Pooky, hive rechargeable table lamp in brown gloss

I recently shared on my TikTok why rechargeable lamps are an absolute must-have for autumn and winter interiors. Unlike traditional table lamps that are limited by plug sockets or ceiling lights fixed in place, rechargeable lamps can reach those overlooked corners and add instant ambience. They’re also perfect for layering in low-level lighting ~ creating a cosy, inviting atmosphere that bigger lights can’t.

I keep a few dotted around my flat, and they’ve genuinely transformed my space during the darker months. This rechargeable table lamp from Pooky is fab ~ I love the colour, the layered ripple detailing at the top, and its simple, timeless design. Pair it with a beautiful lampshade for extra personality ~ it would look stunning with the OKA shade I mentioned earlier.

Welcome to Get CURATED ~ the start of a new mini-series where I’ll be sharing *very* practical design tips & tricks that you can use in your own home, whether that be rented or owned. This isn’t necessarily about the pretty stuff, it’s about the functional layers and clever choices that make your space feel like it’s been designed professionally.

Today we’re talking about lighting ~ one of the most important, yet often overlooked (and notoriously tricky to get right) elements of interior design. By mix and matching different types of light, you can create a space that can go from task-oriented during the day (working from home, cooking, etc) to relaxed and sociable in the evening.

To start with, lighting is split into three main groups:

1. Ambient Lighting

This type of lighting is generally the major practical source of light in a room and therefore the place to start when thinking about lighting schemes. The light may perform differently depending on which room it is in ~ an overhead pendant in a kitchen needs to be a bright, focused light but a chandelier in a living room or bedroom should be softer and perhaps on a dimmable switch for different moods throughout the day. You’ll also want to think about the size of your space ~ the bigger the space the more ambient lighting you need or a bigger central fixture. Make sure that the ambient lighting can generally cover all aspects of the room as you’ll bring in layers and mood lighting through other types of light later.

2. Task Lighting

Task lights are exactly what they say on the tin ~ lighting for specific tasks. The most obvious example is of course a desk lamp but it also extends to floor lamps that might be behind a sofa or armchair for a cosy reading nook or vanity lights either side of a bathroom mirror. It’s usually quite obvious what you need to include in the room in terms of this type of lighting ~ it’s whatever tasks you are planning to carry out in the space.

3. Accent Lighting

Accent lighting gives a room its mood and visual interest. While it’s not designed for highly practical purposes, it adds depth by introducing an extra layer of light. Accent lamps and fixtures are often textural, sculptural, or detail-focused in their base and shade, bringing richness through their materials and drawing attention to specific areas of the room. Think picture lights, table lamps, wall lights & rechargeable lamps.

Other Things To Think About…

~ Shade Materials

Different lampshade materials have a big impact on how light is reflected and the atmosphere created. Natural fabrics like linen and cotton softly diffuse light for a warm, cosy glow, while silk adds a touch of luxury with a smoother shine. Glass shades can be clear or frosted and also coloured, offering either bright or softened illumination. Materials like metal focus light directionally, creating drama and contrast, whereas woven shades like rattan cast interesting shadows that add texture. Generally, lighter shades brighten a room by reflecting more light, while darker shades absorb light to create a moodier, more intimate feel.

~ Bulb Temperature

Check what bulb temperature you are using. Most bulbs for residential homes should be warm and around 2700-3000 Kelvin with task lighting cooler at 4000K. Make sure you are using the same temperature for all the lights in the room!

~ Make sure the lights are spread out evenly

Avoid clustering lights too close together. Instead, space them thoughtfully around the room. This ensures each light can do its job properly, casting and reflecting light as intended. Think of each fixture as owning its own “zone” to illuminate, so the whole space feels balanced and well-lit without glare or dark patches.

~ Avoid obstructing natural light

For example, placing a pendant right in front of a large window can block out daylight and views of the outside. I personally like to keep as much of the sky visible as possible. If you’re working with a small room or low ceilings, consider opting for a flush mount or a low-profile pendant to maximise natural light and keep the space feeling open.

~ Consider dimmers

Installing dimmer switches is one of the easiest ways to add versatility and control to your lighting scheme. Dimmers let you adjust the brightness to suit different times of day, moods, or activities ~ from bright task lighting when you’re working or cooking, to soft illumination for relaxing in the evenings.

~ Using mirrors as a source of light

Pooky Lighting sells mirrors alongside their lighting range, and when I met their Marketing Director at work I found out that they believe mirrors are an extra source of light. Mirrors help bounce light around, brighten up a room, and make small or dark spaces feel bigger. A mirror can also highlight special architectural features and be a design feature all in one. Try and think about where you can incorporate one!

Many designer fabric houses offer ready-made cushions and so the price includes not just the fabric, but the fabrication of the cushion and often a feather insert. It’s one of the most cost-effective ways to bring a touch of luxury into your home without committing to many metres of fabric and an upholsterer or curtain maker.

3. Katy.Takla Fabrics

Katy Takla is an independent cushion maker I found via Instagram. She takes small offcuts from great fabric brands, sews them together to make a cushion cover and you can even choose your own frill!

Rented homes often come as uninspiring white boxes filled with flimsy IKEA furniture (or worse), plastic-looking finishes, grim bathroom tiles, and maybe even a rusty radiator or two. And you usually can’t change any of it ~ unless you have an unusually kind land-person, and even then, it’s at your own expense. However, there are plenty of smart ways to work around these issues without altering the bones of the space ~ solutions that are fully reversible, so you can leave the place as you found it and reclaim your full deposit.

1. Swap Out Handles, Doorknobs, and Drawer Pulls

Changing the handles or knobs on kitchen cabinets, bathroom cupboards, wardrobes, or even a basic chest of drawers can instantly liven up a one-dimensional rental. It’s a small detail that makes a big visual impact ~ and it’s a clever way to tie your space together. Use hardware to echo other design elements you can control, like cushion fabrics, lampshades, or rugs.

Tip: Make sure the replacement handles match the existing ones in size and that the screw holes line up. This way, you can use the original drill holes and easily swap the old hardware back when it’s time to move out.

2. Buy Second-Hand and Antique Where You Can

Layer your space with second-hand finds, family hand-me-downs, and sentimental pieces you’ve collected over time. Pre-loved furniture and vintage homewares add texture and personality that newer, mass-produced items often can’t (especially if you don’t have the highest of budgets). Think deep coloured rugs, solid wood barley twist tables, quirky ceramic lamps, or a random ornament. These items carry history ~ sometimes visibly worn, sometimes a story verbally passed down ~ and they immediately bring depth and warmth to an otherwise plain white rental.

3. Fill Your Walls with Art!

If painting the walls isn’t an option, cover them up with layers of texture and color using different art mediums. This instantly adds depth, visual interest, and an clear sense of your own personality.

It’s also a wonderful way to showcase sentimental items. For example, I’ve framed hand-drawn birthday cards from friends, my own (admittedly amateur) paintings, and even patterned fabric or wallpaper samples ~ which you can often get for free from your favourite suppliers.

You can also get creative with your frames ~ hunt for unique ones in charity shops or online, then paint them in a color you love that makes the artwork pop. Try using £5 sample pots from Farrow & Ball for a refined and curated look.

By layering art in this way, your walls become a curated gallery that feels truly yours without any permanent changes.

4. Oversized Rugs

An oversized rug can transform a rental by adding warmth, texture, and a sense of cosiness. They help to cover up nasty decades-old carpet or softens harsh laminate flooring. Plus, it’s a moveable piece that adds color and pattern without any permanent changes ~ and it’s a fantastic starting point to pull colors from when planning your full room scheme.

5. Cordless Wall Lights

A bit more of an investment, but very worth it ~ cordless or “stick-on” wall lights are one of the easiest ways to make a rental look more polished and lived-in. They add a beautiful layer of ambient light, which goes a long way in softening stark white walls and creating a cosy, inviting atmosphere.

They work just like hanging a picture frame ~ use Command strips to attach them to the wall, and recharge the bulb separately with a USB cable. No electrician, no drilling, no stress. While they may cost a little more upfront, you can take them with you wherever you move next. If you eventually buy a place, they’ll save you hundreds on electrician costs ~ and they look exactly the same as a hardwired wall light.

I love Pooky for this ~ they have a brilliant rechargeable bulb system called Genesis, which is magnetic and super easy to recharge. I use it in my Pooky lamp at home, and it’s both practical, seamless and beautiful when viewed from above. Not forgetting their huge range of patterned shades to go with!

6. Layer Fabrics on Top of Tables

Laying fabrics over the top of any hard furniture is something I’ve always done ~ whether it’s on my very grey chest-of-drawers, our antique TV stand, or living room side tables. It’s a simple way to add texture and pattern (if you want!) to a room. For an extra special touch, you can even use antique fabrics that bring history and character to your space.

7. Mix and Match Cushions and Patterns

Don’t be afraid to clash cushions and patterns ~ layering different prints and textures creates a vibrant, lived-in feel that’s full of personality. Bold florals with geometric shapes, or velvet cushions paired with striped bedding. It’s an easy, cheap way to inject color and warmth AND you can swap them in & out with the change in seasons for a room refresh.

8. Display Tile Samples on Top of Radiators

Radiators are often an eyesore in rentals due to their rusty nature ~ I’ve discovered that tile samples fit pretty perfectly on the top of our radiators. They cover all the rust, add colour into our bathroom and allow us to put a diffuser, bowl, and whatever else on the top ~ display space we didn’t otherwise have. For £0.86 per sample, they have been the most economic way we’ve added charm to our flat so far.

Tip ~ always include the price of the lampshade when thinking about the overall cost. When bought individually, they are so expensive! You can also mix and match your lampshades further down the line for a room refresh so may be worth considering if they work with other lighting in your room.
