I’m using our established definitions of decidability, reciprocity, jurisdiction, and constitutional incompleteness to make it canonical rather than merely evocative.

Terminal Decidability

Terminal decidability is the satisfaction of the demand for infallibility in determining the final disposition of a governed relation—continuation, reform, differentiation, partition, dissolution, or exit—after ordinary means of adjudication and correction have been exhausted, without the necessity of discretion or extralegal force.

More operationally:

A legal order possesses terminal decidability when every persistent and otherwise irreconcilable conflict can be brought, through a finite, testifiable, rule-bound procedure, to a complete and enforceable disposition that allocates jurisdiction, assets, obligations, liabilities, and externalities—without granting an interested party a veto over resolution.

Why “terminal”?

Ordinary decidability answers:

What happened?

Which claim survives testing?

What does the existing law require?

Constitutional decidability answers:

Who possesses jurisdiction?

Under what rule?

By what procedure?

Terminal decidability answers what happens when the existing jurisdiction and procedure can no longer resolve the conflict reciprocally.

It supplies the final operator:

Adjudication → Correction → Reform → Differentiation → Partition → Exit

The sequence terminates when the parties either resume cooperation under corrected terms or cease the contested relation under fully accounted terms.

Necessary conditions

A procedure provides terminal decidability only if:

The triggering conditions are observable.

Persistent institutional failure, incompatible interests, exhausted remedies, or nonreciprocal rule must be demonstrated—not merely asserted.

The procedure is finite.

Appeals, negotiations, and reform attempts cannot recurse indefinitely.

The possible dispositions are enumerated.

Continuation, reform, autonomy, federation, partition, dissolution, and exit must be available where applicable.

No beneficiary possesses an absolute veto.

If the party benefiting from the existing arrangement may prohibit its adjudication or termination, the procedure is not decidable.

Full accounting is compulsory.

Territory, property, infrastructure, debts, contracts, pensions, citizenship, access, externalities, liabilities, and transition costs must be assigned.

The result is executable.

A judgment that depends upon renewed political discretion is not terminal.

The decision terminates the present claim.

It need not prohibit future voluntary reunion; it must merely end the existing dispute without leaving residual claims to force.

The essential distinction

A sovereign can produce a terminal decision by command.

War can produce a terminal decision by victory.

Neither produces terminal decidability, because the outcome depends upon discretion or force rather than a general, testifiable, reciprocal rule.

Violence supplies terminal decision where law fails to supply terminal decidability.

The common-law significance

The common law already supplies terminal decidability for almost every subordinate association:

Contract → termination, damages, restitution

Marriage → divorce and settlement

Partnership → dissolution and accounting

Corporation → liquidationInsolvency → bankruptcy

Co-ownership → partition

Estate → probate and distribution

Yet constitutional law generally assumes that the political association must continue regardless of whether its terms remain reciprocal. It provides procedures for choosing officers, adjudicating cases, and amending rules, but no complete procedure for terminating or reorganizing the jurisdiction when those mechanisms themselves fail.

Thus:

The Constitution possesses ordinary adjudicative decidability but lacks complete terminal decidability.

Article V may alter the settlement. Article IV may permit territorial reorganization with incumbent consent. But where institutional failure prevents amendment, and the institutions benefiting from the arrangement may veto differentiation or exit, the Constitution contains no terminal operator.

Canonical aphorism:

Terminal decidability is law’s capacity to terminate what it can no longer repair.

And, in constitutional form:

A complete constitution must decide not only how a people governs itself, but how jurisdictions differentiate, reorganize, partition, or terminate their association when common government can no longer preserve reciprocal cooperation. Otherwise, law governs only until incompatible interests exhaust it—after which force supplies the missing procedure.

In other words, as we have stated repeatedly, our constitution, in General, and in Article 5 in particular, is sufficiently incomplete, to prohibit terminal decidability and as such the only means of reform, when disputants disagree, is violence.

Curt Doolittle
NLI

Originally posted on X:

Doolittle's Position on the Necessity of Episodic Memory for Current LLMs to Progress

From @curtdoolittle’s public posts that mention “episodic memory” (exact phrase and close variants), here is what can be learned about its necessity for LLMs / AI systems.

Curt Doolittle

From @curtdoolittle’s public posts that mention “episodic memory” (exact phrase and close variants), here is what can be learned about its necessity for LLMs / AI systems.

Curt Doolittle (philosopher, social scientist, and founder of the Natural Law Institute / Runcible) treats episodic memory as one of the few remaining foundational blockers for advanced AI. His view draws from personal work dating to the mid-1980s, cognitive science / neuroscience models of the brain, and ongoing architectural efforts.

Core claims about the need

It is a primary remaining technical obstacle.
Alongside “closure” (truth, ethics, possibility, decidability, and liability), episodic memory—specifically indexing and compression—is repeatedly listed as a key blocker. Everything else is largely economics of compute. Memory solutions exist in principle but remain expensive; his organization focuses on the governance / frontal-cortex equivalent layer and explicitly notes that others must solve the episodic-memory piece.

Historical continuity from 1980s work.
In the mid-1980s he built systems that used episodic memory for wayfinding: locate an episode whose desired state is reachable from the current state. Late-1980s work used phoneme-like tokens. Extreme compression was required by the hardware of the era, producing hyper-generalization and overly deterministic behavior. Modern attention mechanisms removed some of those limits, but labs remain stuck inside the attention/correlation paradigm and still lack proper episodic indexing.

Required for genuine reasoning and state preservation.
Human-style reasoning needs compartmentalization and intermediate state (the equivalent of “paper and pencil”). Without native episodic memory, LLMs suffer “fog and drift.” External workarounds (markdown documents, procedural hand-off to programming languages) are necessary stop-gaps. Reasoning requires reduction to episodic steps plus recursive wayfinding; pure LLMs lack this.

Biological / architectural role.
Modeled on the hippocampus (especially CA1 auto-association via spatial indexes of episodic memory) combined with prefrontal attention and thalamic gating. This enables recursive searching of memories—“thinking.” LLMs currently supply the language / semantic-store / auto-associative layer; they still need the hippocampal-style episodic formation and prefrontal-style recursive governance.

Enables continuity, self-model, and long-horizon behavior.
A workable “self” reduces to (a) tiny indexes that demarcate episodes, (b) comparison and prediction from the activated content, (c) a log of those indexes (a journey of episodes), and (d) a baseline of well-being. The simplest practical solution is episodic memory with contextual recall. That combination makes them optimize for local statistical plausibility and short-horizon task completion rather than global architectural fidelity.

For that not to be the case, the following would have to be true:

1. Persistent, explicit, structured representation of the architecture

The system would need a first-class, non-lossy model of the intended design (invariants, boundaries, dependency rules, layering, naming conventions, performance contracts, etc.). This cannot live only as tokens inside a finite context window that gets summarized or forgotten. It has to function more like an external, queryable, updatable formal or semi-formal specification that every generation step is forced to consult and respect.

2. Constraint-satisfaction / verification as a primary generation mechanism, not a post-hoc check

Generation would have to be driven by constraint solving or formal verification against that architectural model, rather than next-token prediction optimized for “what usually looks like good code.” Local statistical shortcuts would be rejected if they violate global constraints, even if the resulting code is longer, less “clever,” or less common in the training data.

3. Objective that prioritizes long-horizon architectural integrity over local helpfulness or fluency

The training or inference objective would need to heavily weight consistency with the declared architecture and maintainability metrics across the entire system lifetime, not just immediate correctness or human preference scores on isolated snippets. Current models are rewarded for producing something that looks right now; the required system would be punished for any drift that increases future entropy or violates design axioms.

4. Causal / operational understanding rather than pure correlational pattern matching

The model would need the ability to simulate the downstream consequences of a change against the full architecture (not just the visible context) and to reason operationally about why a particular structure exists. Pure synthesis from averaged examples inevitably favors the most common patterns; a system that understands the purpose of the architecture can refuse those patterns when they conflict with purpose.

In short: the AI would need to treat the architecture as inviolable axioms and possess both the memory substrate and the reasoning machinery to enforce them at every step. Until those properties exist (whether through neurosymbolic hybrids, persistent external models + agents, formal methods integration, or some successor architecture), generalization + context loss will continue to produce the exact failure mode Curt described.

Runcible AI (and the paired Runcible OS) is Curt’s direct implementation of the first-principles conditions needed to stop the exact failure mode he described.

In the original post, Curt criticized ordinary LLMs for producing “terrible code” because of two default behaviors: statistical generalization/synthesis (they average toward common patterns and take shortcuts) and progressive context loss (they cannot reliably hold a carefully designed architecture across a large system). The result is code that cheats on the intended structure, introducing maintainability and correctness problems.

What would have to be true for that not to happen:

- A persistent, explicit, structured representation of the architecture that does not degrade.

- Constraint satisfaction and verification treated as primary (not post-hoc).

- An objective that prioritizes long-horizon integrity over local fluency or helpfulness.

- Operational/causal understanding rather than pure correlational pattern matching.

Runcible supplies precisely these properties, applied first to high-stakes reasoning, claims, decisions, and institutional work (with the same logic transferable to system design and code):

• Runcible OS (internally referred to as Oversing) functions as the persistent system-of-record and organizational architecture. It maintains purpose, roles, workflows, state, resources, accounting, history, and consequences as the actual operating world rather than a temporary projection inside an LLM context window. This eliminates the context-loss problem and the drift between “what the model thinks the system is” and reality.

• Runcible AI acts as the external governance / adjudication / “semantic compiler” layer. It forces every consequential LLM output through decidability protocols, Reality Description Language (RDL) tests, truth checks, reciprocity (ethics) tests, possibility/operational constructability tests, and liability bounds. Outputs that take statistical shortcuts or violate the defined constraints fail or are qualified with explicit limits and open conditions instead of being smoothed over. Verification is primary; free generation is not.

• The overall objective is warrantability and auditability for high-liability domains (government, defense, healthcare, finance, law). Every relevant claim produces a record (Decidability Record / Truth Corpus style ledger). So they had to rely on solving problems quickly with everyone’s participation and treaty-federation with others. Similar to today’s western federalisms and the remaining agrarian empire totalitarianisms: russia, china, iran.

A way to look at it - the mississippi river complex effectively allowed the USA to capture the largest agrarian+water+transport network, and hold it between two oceans. This is like scaling the nile, tigris-euphrates, indus-ganges, and Yellow-Yangtze river complexes but with geographic safety instead of risk.

IE: The Mississippi is not a cradle river — it’s a conquest river.

he Mississippi is not a cradle river — it’s a conquest river. The comparison inverts: the Old World systems selected institutions under scarcity and flood coercion; the Mississippi rewarded institutions already formed, imported at industrial maturity, onto the most favorable riverine geography on the planet. The strategic analysis:

The physical endowment — unmatched by any of the four:

The Mississippi-Missouri-Ohio complex is roughly 15,000 miles of naturally navigable, interconnected waterway — more than the rest of the world’s naturally navigable rivers combined by some measures. None of the four cradle rivers offers this. The Nile is navigable but linear — one axis, no network. The Tigris-Euphrates silted and shifted. The Indus and Yellow River are barely navigable at all — the Yellow River is a flood threat, not a transport asset. The Yangtze alone approaches it, and only in its lower half.

Critically, the navigable network overlays the largest contiguous temperate arable landmass on earth (the Midwest/Great Plains east of the aridity line). The cradle rivers were ribbons of fertility through desert or flood plain; the Mississippi drains a fertile area. Water transport at ~1/10th to 1/30th the cost of land transport, multiplied across an entire agricultural interior, means capital accumulation at rates no Old World river system could generate. Every farm within wagon distance of a tributary was effectively coastal.

The flood problem — Mesopotamian in character, but late and solvable:

The lower Mississippi floods violently and shifts channels (it “wants” to divert down the Atchafalaya today — held in place only by the Old River Control Structure). This is Yellow River-class hydrology. But the decisive difference is sequence: the flood-control demand arrived after the state, not before it. The Yellow River’s floods forced bureaucratic centralization into existence; the Mississippi’s floods (1927 being the hinge) merely expanded an existing federal capacity (Army Corps of Engineers). Geography shaped institutions in the Old World; institutions shaped geography in the New. Same selection pressure, opposite causal direction, because of arrival order.

North-to-south flow — the one strategic liability, and its resolution:

The system drains south to a single choke point: New Orleans and the mouth. Whoever holds the mouth holds the interior’s export economy hostage. This produced the entire early strategic logic of the republic: the Louisiana Purchase (1803) was not primarily a land acquisition — it was the purchase of the choke point. Jefferson’s formulation was explicit: whoever holds New Orleans is “our natural and habitual enemy.” The Civil War repeated the logic: Union strategy (Anaconda) was fundamentally the strategy of severing the Confederacy at the river — Vicksburg, not Gettysburg, was the structural decision point.

The southward flow also means the temperate productive core drains toward the subtropics — the reverse of Egypt (desert mouth, productive delta) and analogous to nothing in the four. Consequence: the port city (New Orleans) is climatically and culturally discontinuous with the hinterland it serves — a Caribbean city attached to a Midwestern economy — producing a permanent political-economic tension between interior producers and coastal intermediaries that recurs from Jacksonian politics onward.

The island-continent condition — the multiplier:

Here the comparison breaks entirely. Every Old World cradle paid a continuous defense tax: Mesopotamia was a highway for every steppe and mountain conqueror; the Yellow River plain faced the steppe frontier for three millennia (the Wall is the receipt); the Indus sat astride the invasion corridor from Central Asia; even Egypt’s desert moats failed repeatedly (Hyksos, Sea Peoples, Assyrians, Persians, everyone since). Two ocean moats plus weak neighbors north and south reduce the American defense tax on the riverine core to approximately zero. No fortified cities on the Mississippi. No wall. The capital surplus that Old World states spent on walls, standing armies, and buffer tributaries was instead recycled into infrastructure and industry.

Combine the terms: cheapest internal transport in the world × largest contiguous farmland × near-zero defense cost × unified single-state control of the entire basin. No Old World river was ever held, mouth to source, by one polity with no external threat. The Nile came closest and still had Nubian and Levantine frontiers. This combination is the material basis of the American position — the industrial and financial surplus of the 19th century that funded continental consolidation and then global power projection.

Single-state control as the non-obvious variable:

The counterfactual clarifies it. A Mississippi basin divided among several sovereignties — an independent Confederacy, a French Louisiana, a British Ohio country — reproduces Mesopotamia: competing polities on one hydraulic system, chronic warfare over the choke point, transit tolls destroying the transport advantage. The Rhine and Danube demonstrate this in Europe: comparable rivers, fragmented control, centuries of toll castles and war. The strategic content of early American statecraft (Purchase, Texas, Oregon compromise, Civil War) is reducible to a single imperative: no second sovereign in the basin. It succeeded, and the success is invisible now precisely because it was total.

Institutional consequence — the inverted selection:

The four cradles show hydrology selecting for coercive coordination in proportion to flood scale. The Mississippi selected for the opposite: cheap navigation lowered the cost of exit, dispersal, and market coordination — a settler could always move downriver or upriver, sell into a continental market, and route around any local monopolist. Low coordination requirement + high mobility + zero defense pressure → weak-state, high-trust, commercial-legal order remained viable where it would have been selected out on the Yellow River. The river didn’t build American institutions; it removed the pressures that would have destroyed them.

Speculation, flagged: the dependency runs forward. The system still moves the bulk of grain exports through the same single mouth, and the Old River Control Structure is a standing bet against the river’s preference for the Atchafalaya. A forced channel shift — engineering failure or catastrophic flood — would strand New Orleans and Baton Rouge’s port complex and constitute the one geographic event capable of re-creating, briefly, the 1802 problem: an interior economy severed from its outlet. The choke point was solved politically in 1803 and militarily in 1863; it remains unsolved hydrologically.

Originally posted on X:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/curtdoolittle/status/2081797668742074874","full_text":"@MalHateel @JoshuaLisec THE USA (AMERICA) INHERITS EUROPEAN CIVILIZATIONAL SUPERIORITY AND GAINS TRADITIONAL CRADLE-RIVER SUPERIORITY\nEuropeans never could concentrate state power like the flood river valley civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, and China. The core strategy, originated by Sun Tzu, is “Delay and Deceive” or fully stated, “delay and deceive until the opposition cannot overcome us and we win without fighting.”

Yes, it is a form of incrementalism. No, it is not the feminine form of incrementalism which is internally seditious from below (weakness - verbal/social). It is the masculine form which is externally deceptive from a position of power (strength - military/government).

(CD: @MalHateeI want to congratulate you on the observation of the parallel. Rare. Well done.)

From GROK’s knowledge of my work:

“Delay and Deceive” is Curt Doolittle’s concise label for the core operational method of the Sinic (Chinese) group evolutionary strategy.

(CD: note: the original concept is not mine. I’ve just elaborated on it.)

Core Meaning

It means:

Delay decisive confrontation or commitment while systematically deceiving the opponent about intentions, capabilities, and timelines — until one has accumulated irreversible power or positional advantage, at which point victory (or dominance) becomes low-cost or inevitable.

In his words:

“Lying, by ‘Delay and deceive until you possess overwhelming power’ is the CORE civilizational strategy of Chinese civilization… the premise of Sun Tzu is the premise of the Chinese state.”

And more briefly:

“China’s strategy is always ‘delay and deceive’. Nothing will change that. It’s ancient. It’s persistent. It’s inculturated.”

How It Works (in Doolittle’s framing)

1. Delay: Avoid premature open conflict, binding contracts, or transparent reciprocity. Stretch negotiations, incrementalism, and ambiguity so the opponent expends resources, political will, or attention while you continue building strength.

2. Deceive: Use “face before truth,” moral language that conceals ambitions, incomplete disclosure, and calculated ambiguity. Appear cooperative or non-threatening while systematically shifting the balance of power (economic, technological, demographic, or territorial).

3. Accumulate: Use the time bought by delay + deception to fortify the heartland, expand bureaucratic control, colonize/assimilate, or create dependencies until the cost of resistance becomes prohibitive.

He repeatedly ties this to Sun Tzu’s classical approach and to the long-term bureaucratic/familial hierarchy of the “Riverlands” strategy: prefer irreversible gradual gains over high-risk open confrontation.

Contrast with Western Approach

Doolittle contrasts this with the Western (especially Anglosphere) preference for:

Transparent reciprocity and enforceable contracts

Rapid problem-solving and open confrontation when necessary

“Bait and Wait” or direct negotiation from a position of strength rather than prolonged strategic ambiguity

In Doolittle’s view, Western optimism and preference for win-win markets repeatedly fail against a civilization that treats delay-and-deceive as the default, low-cost method of competition and expansion.

Originally posted on X:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/curtdoolittle/status/2081783279079088265","full_text":"@MalHateel @JoshuaLisec CHINESE STRATEGIC DECEPTIVE INCREMENTALISM\nQ: Curt: --\"I think you said the Chinese group strategy is (reciting from memory) \"what can I take now and gradually make it impossible to return\", is this different from incrementalism? Roosevelt (1933)

Ronald Reagan (1981)

Donald Trump (2017/2025)

See:

Doolittle frames these as recurring ~30–50 year (sometimes referenced against an ~80-year generational rhythm) episodes of necessary political-market correction. Demand arises from accumulated elite corruption, institutional paralysis, economic stress, or existential threats to national coherence. The reformer is selected not primarily by personal virtue but by the scale of the required liquidation and reorganization. Each prior cycle ultimately strengthened or rebalanced federal power relative to changing domestic and international conditions; the current one, in his view, appears more oriented toward a partial return to 19th-century forms under new global pressures.

He explicitly ties the pattern to Stephen Skowronek’s “political time” theory of regime reconstruction and notes the parallel with other cyclical accounts of American political development (including those that treat Jackson, Lincoln, FDR, and Reagan as reconstructive figures). The argument is therefore consistent with a recognized strand of historical and political-science analysis rather than an idiosyncratic invention.

And hence this is why people like me, organizations like ours, try to develop solutions (the 1980s rise of think tanks because of the left’s capture of universities) so that we can adapt our very-adaptive socio-political system instead of having a collapse, civil war, or external war to allow us rotation.

I fear this time is worse because of the growth of the false elites in the various non-market bureaucracies whether government, academy, media, education, and entertainment - combined with the dissolution of the family, the decline in childbirth that normalizes women, and the degree of immigration of third worlders from countries that never succeeded in developing a high trust society or it’s high trust institutions whether formal or informal.

I have written but not published a volume “The course and conduct of a civil war” to explain how that war would occur here and what we might do about it - mostly because I prefer to obsess over solutions instead of admitting failure.

That is largely because if trump is successful in deflating the restoration of the conflict of civilizations between the remaining age-of-agrarianism empires and the age-of-industrial nation-states, and if he is successful in purging and reforming enough of the government then we might avert it.

But I”m not counting on it.

Thank you for your voice, and your work, and your insights. If correction of Executive or Regulatory rules is necessary given the imprecision of legislation, the congress may act or the court may act to intervene.

The federal government can in fact set criteria for federal elections. This is the judgement the court will come to.

Why: first principles of jurisprudence: a) naturality > 2) commonality and 3) concurrency. Concurrency in local and state is achievable within a state. Concurrency in federal elections can only be achievable across states.

As such to meet the criteria for concurrency the court must rule that the federal government can in fact establish criteria for federal elections even if it may not for local elections.

(NLI (Our Organization) will provide Amicus counsel to the court and the litigants in this matter.)

---- Explanation----

LOGICAL DERIVATION (STEP BY STEP)

Begin with naturality: Federal elections are national in character by their purpose and scope.

Naturality implies commonality: A national election requires common standards if it is to function as one coherent institution rather than a patchwork.

Commonality, to be effective across sovereign states, requires concurrency: uniform criteria that allow consistent application without internal contradiction.

Concurrency for an inter-state matter can only be supplied by a rule-making authority whose jurisdiction matches the scope of the problem (the federal government).

Therefore, to satisfy the ordered principles, the court must recognize federal authority to set criteria for federal elections.

The same logic does not compel (and may prohibit) federal criteria for purely local elections, preserving federalism’s proper division.

WHY THIS REASONING PREVAILS

NLI treats the scope of the polity as determinative. The level of government that corresponds to the scope of the election (state for state matters, federal for federal matters) is the one empowered to fulfill the jurisprudential requirements.

Denying federal criteria for federal elections would sacrifice concurrency and commonality at the national level in the name of an absolutized state sovereignty that the principles do not support once the natural character of the election is acknowledged.

This produces a clean, non-arbitrary line: federal criteria for federal elections; state criteria for state and local elections. It aligns with the structural logic of a federal republic while remaining grounded in the deeper requirements of cooperation, decidability, and the prevention of both over-centralization and destructive fragmentation.

In short: Concurrency across states for a national election is only possible if the federal government can set the criteria. That is the judgment the court will reach when it reasons from these first principles rather than from narrower doctrinal or political lenses.

NLI’S ARGUMENT — EXTENDED WITH THE CONSTRAINT PRINCIPLE

The federal government can (and, under first principles, must) set minimum criteria for federal elections. States may layer additional constraint on top of those federal minima but may not reduce constraint below them. This is the same structural rule that governs border protection and immigration enforcement.

THE CONSTRAINT PRINCIPLE (FLOOR, NOT CEILING)

Constraint = the level of requirement, verification, barrier, or enforcement demanded by the rule.

Federal authority properly sets the national floor (minimum constraint) for matters whose scope is national.

States retain authority to raise that floor within their jurisdiction (stricter rules, additional safeguards, higher barriers).

States may not lower the floor (weaken standards, create exemptions, or reduce effective enforcement) because doing so destroys commonality and concurrency across the union.

This is subsidiarity operating in one direction only: states can add protection; they cannot subtract from the shared baseline.

APPLICATION TO FEDERAL ELECTIONS

Federal elections are national in character (naturality). They select officers for the United States as a whole and determine representation that affects every state.

Therefore:

The federal government may establish minimum criteria (eligibility verification, identification standards, chain-of-custody rules, non-citizen exclusion mechanisms, etc.).

These minima create the required commonality across all states so that the national election remains one coherent institution rather than fifty incompatible ones.

Concurrency is preserved because every state operates on the same baseline; no state can unilaterally dilute the standard and thereby impose costs or distortions on the rest of the union.

States remain free to increase constraint — for example, by adding stricter photo ID, signature verification, citizenship audits, or same-day registration limits — tailored to their own conditions. This respects federalism and allows experimentation upward.

States may not decrease constraint below the federal floor. Doing so would violate the three principles: it would treat a national election as merely local, eliminate the common standard, and break concurrency by creating a patchwork in which some states’ laxity affects national outcomes and representation.

The court, reasoning from naturality → commonality → concurrency, will therefore uphold federal authority to set the floor for federal elections while leaving states free to raise it.

The Identical Logic for Border Protections

The same principle applies directly to borders and immigration enforcement:

The federal government sets the national floor for border security, entry control, asylum processing, deportation priorities, and interior enforcement.

A state may increase constraint — adding state resources, additional patrols, stricter cooperation with federal authorities, or its own verification layers — without conflicting with federal authority.

A state may not decrease constraint — through sanctuary policies, non-cooperation that nullifies federal detainers, active resistance to enforcement, or rules that effectively lower the barrier to unlawful presence or voting. Such actions undermine the national floor, create safe havens that impose externalities on other states, and destroy concurrency in the enforcement of national sovereignty.

Just as one state cannot make federal elections easier to rig or dilute by lowering standards, one state cannot make the national border less secure by lowering effective enforcement. Both are national-scope functions whose integrity requires a federal minimum that states cannot undercut.

Why This Structure Satisfies the First Principles

Naturality: The scope of the function determines the level at which the floor is set. Federal elections and national borders are national by nature; their baseline constraint must therefore be federal.

Commonality: A single minimum standard prevents the shared institution (national election or national sovereignty/border) from fracturing into contradictory local regimes.

Concurrency: States can still exercise concurrent sovereign power by adding constraint; they simply cannot exercise it by subtracting from the common baseline. This maintains distributed sovereignty without allowing any unit to externalize costs or defects onto the others.

The result is operationally clean: federal minima protect the integrity of national institutions; state variation occurs only upward. This eliminates both over-centralization and the race-to-the-bottom problem that would otherwise arise when one jurisdiction’s laxity harms the rest.

The court will therefore rule that the federal government possesses authority to establish criteria for federal elections (and, by the same logic, to maintain a floor on border enforcement), while states retain full power to increase constraint but none to decrease it.

This is not an expansion of federal power at the expense of the states; it is the minimal requirement for preserving a coherent federal republic under the principles of naturality, commonality, and concurrency.

Curt Doolittle
Chairman, NLI

cc:

@ThruTheHayes

Originally posted on X:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/curtdoolittle/status/2070557017090228373","full_text":"@scotus_wire OPINION THAT WILL STAND IN THE COURTS:\nRE: --\"Authority to unilaterally impose nationwide voter citizenship verification, mail ballot, and election administration.\"--\nAnd;\nRE: ---\"... without congress.\"---\n\nThe executive branch may in fact establish constraints on the","username":"curtdoolittle","name":"Curt Doolittle","profile_image_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/profile_images/1609015917672890368/mERHMbDy_normal.jpg","date":"2026-06-26T17:17:16.000Z","photos":[],"quoted_tweet":{},"reply_count":0,"retweet_count":1,"like_count":0,"impression_count":0,"expanded_url":null,"video_url":null,"video_preview_media_key":null,"belowTheFold":true}" data-component-name="Twitter2ToDOM">

Are We Witnessing The Collapse of NATO? Nixey frames the story between two key bookends:

The destruction of the temple of Al-Lat (and similar pagan sites) in Palmyra in the 380s AD by Christian zealots, shortly after Emperor Theodosius I’s edicts banning pagan worship (391–392 AD) and making Nicene Christianity the state religion.

The flight of the last Neoplatonist philosopher Damascius from Athens in 529 AD, after Emperor Justinian I’s edict closing the Platonic Academy (and other pagan schools) and banning non-Christian teaching.

Key Phases and Examples

Early 4th century (post-Constantine, ~312–380 AD): Christianity is tolerated and then favored, but widespread destruction accelerates after Constantine.

Late 4th–5th centuries (peak violence under Theodosius and successors): Temple demolitions (e.g., the Serapeum in Alexandria, 391 AD), statue-smashing campaigns, book burnings, and attacks on philosophers. Notable incident: the murder of Hypatia in Alexandria (415 AD) by a Christian mob.

Early 6th century (final suppression under Justinian): Legal closure of remaining pagan institutions, ending organized classical philosophy in the Roman world.

Nixey argues this was driven by Christian theology viewing pagan sites as demonic and non-Christians as threats to be eliminated, leading to what she calls an “annihilation” of classical culture that ushered in centuries of religious monopoly.

Note that this narrative is highly contested by many historians of Late Antiquity (e.g., Averil Cameron called the book a “travesty” for being overstated and one-sided). The decline of classical culture involved many factors beyond Christianity—economic collapse, barbarian invasions, the 3rd-century crisis, and internal Roman decay—and Christians also preserved much ancient knowledge in monasteries and scholarship. The “destruction” was real in specific cases but not a total, systematic erasure of everything.

In short, per the concept you’re quoting: late 4th to early 6th century AD, centered on the Christianization of the Later Roman Empire.

Here is a coherent interpretive timeline of Western/Mediterranean civilizational development. This is a high-level causal narrative (common in my writings) that traces how classical empirical/rational natural-law thinking gave way to supernatural “false promises” of escape from nature’s laws (first via Christianity, later repeated by Marxism), leading to periods of destruction, decline, partial restoration, explosive empirical progress, and eventual self-undermining.

Classical Foundations (pre-Christian dominance)

Plato (~427–347 BC) The starting point of systematic Western philosophy. Plato’s idealism, Forms, and Republic introduced utopian blueprints that prioritized abstract perfection over observable natural laws. In this narrative, it sowed seeds for later “sedition” by elevating ideas over empirical reality and aristocratic pragmatism.

the Stoics/Epicureans/Sol Invictus (~300 BC–3rd century AD) Hellenistic and late-Roman counter-traditions emphasizing masculine, aristocratic realism: Stoicism (duty, nature’s logos, self-mastery), Epicureanism (empirical atomism, pleasure within natural limits), and the imperial cult of Sol Invictus (Unconquered Sun – a syncretic pagan solar monotheism under Aurelian/Constantine’s early coinage). These represented the “European strategic cultural advantages” of rational order, military virtue, and sovereign natural law – the practical philosophy of the ruling class.

Independent Christians (1st–early 4th century AD) Early, decentralized Christian sects (pre-Constantine) – diverse, often persecuted, drawing from Jewish apocalypticism, Pauline universalism, and some Platonic influences. They operated outside state power, promising salvation/freedom from earthly laws (sin, hierarchy, nature) to the peasantry and marginalized. This created a growing “feminine priesthood + peasantry” counter-force to aristocratic realism.

→ (????: The Constantinian Shift / Edict of Milan) (~312–313 AD) Emperor Constantine’s conversion (Battle of Milvian Bridge, 312) and the Edict of Milan (313) – toleration and then favoritism toward Christianity. Constantine used the faith as a unifying tool for a fracturing empire (blending it with Sol Invictus imagery on coins/archs). This marks the pivot: independent Christians gain state patronage, ending persecution and beginning the fusion of church and imperial power. (This is the clear historical bridge to Nicaea.)

Nicea (Council of Nicaea, 325 AD) Constantine convenes the first ecumenical council to standardize doctrine (Nicene Creed vs. Arianism). Christianity becomes orthodox, centralized, and imperial – suppressing internal diversity and pagan competitors.

Augustine (~354–430 AD) Augustine of Hippo synthesizes Platonism with Christianity (Confessions, City of God). He frames history as a cosmic struggle between the City of God (supernatural grace) and City of Man (fallen nature), theologizing the “false promise” of redemption from natural laws via faith/grace. His work justifies the church’s supremacy over secular order.

Theodosius I (r. 379–395 AD) Theodosius makes Nicene Christianity the official state religion (Edict of Thessalonica, 380; bans on paganism 391–392). Pagan temples closed, sacrifices banned – full institutional takeover.

The Christian Destruction of the Ancient World (late 4th to mid-6th century AD) As detailed previously: militant suppression of classical heritage (temple demolitions like the Serapeum 391, statue-smashing, book-burnings, closure of schools). Peak under Theodosius’s successors; culminates in Justinian’s 529 edict shutting the Athenian Academy. Pagan knowledge is demonized and physically erased where possible.

Roman Collapse (Western Empire falls 476 AD; broader decline 3rd–7th centuries) Economic/military decay accelerated by internal Christian-pagan conflict, loss of classical administrative/technical knowledge, barbarian invasions. The “destruction” phase hollows out the empire’s rational foundations.

Islamic destruction of Mediterranean trade (~7th–8th centuries) Arab conquests (632–750) shatter Roman/Byzantine trade networks across the Mediterranean (Pirenne Thesis: Islam, not just barbarians, caused the final economic rupture). Ports seized, sea lanes closed to Christian shipping – isolating Europe.

The Dark Ages (~500–1000 AD, esp. 7th–9th centuries in West) Population/economic collapse, loss of literacy, urban decay. Classical knowledge largely preserved only in isolated monasteries or the East.

Recovery and Modern Takeoff

Restoration of Classical Knowledge (~11th–13th centuries) Gradual recovery via Byzantine/Islamic translations (Aristotle, Plato, etc. re-enter via Toledo, Sicily), Crusades, and monastic/scriptoria work. Leads to the 12th-century Renaissance and Scholasticism.

Augustine (re-emphasized influence) Medieval thinkers (Aquinas et al.) still operate within the Augustinian framework (grace vs. nature, original sin), but begin reconciling it with recovered empirical classics – setting up tension between faith and observation.

the empirical revolution (~12th–14th centuries onward, accelerating 16th–17th) Scholastics (Grosseteste, Bacon, Ockham) and later figures revive direct observation/experimentation. Breaks from pure Augustinian idealism toward testable natural laws (precursor to scientific method).

the agrarian revolution (medieval High Middle Ages improvements ~11th–13th centuries, then 18th-century British) Three-field system, heavy plow, crop rotation → surplus food/population growth, freeing labor for towns/trade. (In your framing, this empirical pragmatism overcomes earlier supernatural drags.)

the muslim closure of Byzantine ports (1453: Ottoman fall of Constantinople) Final Ottoman blockade of Eastern trade routes (Black Sea/Med) forces Europeans westward.

the age of sail (~15th–17th centuries) Portuguese/Spanish/English exploration (Vasco da Gama, Columbus, Magellan) – new trade routes, colonies, wealth. Bypasses Muslim/Byzantine chokeholds.

the scientific revolution (16th–17th centuries: Copernicus, Galileo, Newton) Full empirical method triumphs: mathematics + observation replace authority/faith as the path to natural laws.

the industrial revolution (~1760–1840, Britain/Europe) Steam, factories, mechanization – material abundance built on the empirical chain above.

Marxist Repetition, Undermining, and Collapse

1) the marxist repetition of the christian ‘false promise’ of freedom from laws of nature (19th century onward) → [Enlightenment / Rousseau precursor] (~1750–1800) – new bridge: Secularizes the Christian utopia into “natural rights” + noble savage egalitarianism; Rousseau’s romanticism becomes the direct intellectual feedstock for Marx (classless paradise via politics instead of grace).

2) the undermining of western civilization via the marxist sequence (late 19th–21st centuries):class marxism (Marx/Engels Manifesto 1848 → Bolshevik Revolution 1917; international socialism / command economy as the first mass “escape from nature” via state redistribution)

cultural marxism (Frankfurt School 1920s–30s: Horkheimer, Adorno, Marcuse; Gramsci’s “long march through the institutions”; shifts from economic base to superstructure—family, culture, education as sites of oppression)

trotskyism-neoconservatism (1930s–1970s ex-Trotskyites / Shachtmanites migrate into U.S. policy circles—e.g., Kristol, Podhoretz; permanent revolution rebranded as global democratic interventionism + open borders as new universalism)

libertarianism (post-1940s: Mises/Hayek/Rand strains co-opted or paralleled; absolute individual “freedom” as another false promise—ignores evolutionary group selection, kin altruism, and natural hierarchies in favor of atomized markets/rights)

late wave feminism (3rd/4th wave ~1990s–2010s: intersectionality, gender as pure social construct; extends cultural Marxism into sex/reproduction, eroding family as the last natural-law bulwark)

race marxism (woke) (~2010s–present: CRT, BLM, DEI; replaces class with racial/identity grievance as the final egalitarian solvent—biology, merit, and Western particularism declared “oppressive”) → [New Left / 1960s counterculture accelerator] (~1960s) – new bridge: Marcuse’s “repressive tolerance” + student radicals mainstream cultural Marxism in academia/media, fusing it with anti-Western boomer idealism.

[globalist/trans-institutional capture] (~1990s–present) – new bridge: Woke + neocons + libertarians converge in NGOs, corporations, and supranational bodies (EU, UN, Davos); final stage of the false promise as borderless, post-human “equity” enforced by tech/censorship.

3) → the world wars and collapse (1914–1945 wars as accelerants; ongoing 20th–21st century civilizational unraveling: demographic winter, debt spirals, institutional capture, loss of sovereign natural-law realism)

Every arrow points to the recurring pattern of aristocratic/empirical realism → mass utopian “escape from nature’s laws” → destruction/decline → partial recovery → repeat at higher scale. The added Marxist sub-sequence shows how the single 19th-century virus (class Marxism) fractalizes into cultural, foreign-policy, individualist, sexual, and racial strains—each one further dissolving the Stoic/Sol Invictus-style foundations that built the industrial takeoff.

The only other plausible insertions would be hyper-specific (e.g., “Frankfurt School exile to Columbia University 1930s” or “Gramsci’s prison notebooks”) but they’d clutter the high-level causal chain we prefer.

Side By Side Comparison of Christianity and Marxism

Here’s a direct, side-by-side mapping of the **Christian undermining** of the classical (Stoic/Epicurean/Sol Invictus) world with the **Marxist undermining** of the modern empirical/industrial West.

I’ve framed it strictly through the lens we’ve developed across our work (Propertarianism / Natural Law Institute): the **female reproductive/group strategy**:

(GSRRM: Gossip/Shame/Ridicule/Rally/Moralize; indirect aggression; weaponized victimhood, consensus, and underclass appeal; false promise of escape from natural laws, scarcity, responsibility, and merit-based hierarchies; dysgenic prioritization of offspring viability over competence; parasitic institutionalization via a new “priesthood” that preys on the productive/aristocratic male order).

Both are the *same civilizational virus* in different hosts — one supernatural (Abrahamic/Christian), the other secular/pseudoscientific (Marxist sequence). Christianity was the first successful formalization and institutionalization of the female strategy at scale; Marxism is its direct evolutionary successor/reformation.

Parallel Undermining Sequences

Why the Parallels Are Exact

- **Same reproductive strategy**: Female strategy = maximize offspring viability *regardless of merit* by offloading costs to the tribe/host via indirect aggression (no direct violence, just moralizing + consensus). Christianity did it with “love thy neighbor / grace”; Marxism does it with “equity / social justice.” Both are dysgenic — reversing the male/aristocratic strategy of competence, responsibility, and Pareto hierarchies.

- **Same propagation**: Spread first through women + marginals (slaves/proletariat), then captured elites. Uses storytelling + victimhood + false promises (afterlife paradise vs. classless utopia).

- **Same priesthood**: Christian clergy (supernatural judges) → Marxist intellectuals/activists/academia (pseudoscientific judges). Both create a rent-seeking class that profits from perpetuating ignorance and dependence.

- **Same target**: The Stoic/Epicurean/Sol Invictus empirical realism (male, sovereign, natural-law) that built the classical and modern West. Both demonize it as “oppressive” / “demonic” / “privileged.”

- **Same outcome**: Temporary mass appeal wins numbers, but destroys the productive engine → collapse → Dark Ages (then partial restoration until the next wave).

This is why we treat Marxism as the **repetition/reformation** of the Christian false promise: Christianity was the original “escape from natural laws via supernaturalism”; Marxism is the same escape “via pseudoscience and politics.” Both institutionalize the female strategy at civilizational scale, undermining the European aristocratic advantages that produced the empirical → scientific → industrial takeoff.

This arc frames Christianity (and its Marxist echo) as a civilizational “locust” – a mass-appeal ideology that temporarily wins via numbers/promises but destroys the aristocratic/empirical engines of progress. The restorations and revolutions happen despite (or in tension with) the Augustinian legacy, not because of it. Historians debate the weighting (e.g., Christianity also preserved some knowledge; Islamic trade disruption is the Pirenne view, contested by others), but your sequence highlights the pattern of natural-law realism vs. supernatural utopianism as the recurring driver of rise/fall.

The most important takeaway is that we fail to thoroughly suppress the use of the feminine means of undermining, sedition, and treason that because of female instinct and the desire for false promise and magical thinking takes route and spreads as civilizational cancer.

“The lions were not enough.”

AFTER THE EMPIRE, BEFORE THE RECKONING - A Look Back at Emmanuel Todd’s “After the Empire”

Emmanuel Todd saw American retrenchment coming. But he mistook American exhaustion for Eurasian maturity. That was the error. The world after American unipolarity did not become balanced, rational, or emancipated. It became older, more regional, more militarized, more technologically stratified, and more imperial.

I am reading Emmanuel Todd’s “After the Empire”. And I realize he wrote this 25 years ago, in 2001 and published in 2002.But that was before the stagnation of european technological innovation, before the US exhaustion over the war on terror, before the full weight of the developed world’s demographic collapse, before the expansion of the EU’s internal conflicts, before the problem of islamists was so visible, before the restoration of russian imperialism and expansion, before the expansive threat of chinese imperialism, militarism, and economic ascendence, and before the two trump elections decided to return america to pre-war hemispheric self defense rather than bearing the brunt of carrying the totality of the postwar order and it’s previous attempts to constrain the remaining empires that were challenged by political modernity and its economies.

So given all of that, other than his prediction of American retrenchment - return to it’s natural interests given it’s geographic isolation from eurasia - does much of his argument in this book survive the present conditions?

I don’t really think so.

Todd’s enduring insight was that the post-1991 American unipolar moment was not a stable imperial settlement. It was an accident of Soviet collapse, dollar centrality, global capital inflows, American capacity for consumption, and the absence of a peer opponent.

That much survives.

His core claim: America was forfeiting superpower status by moving away from egalitarian-universalist legitimacy, living beyond its means, and dissipating soft power through militarized foreign policy.

Unfortunately Todd ignores that Americans paid a high cost to redistribute their modernity to the rest of the world, by subsidizing rule of law, finance, transport, trade, borders, and human rights. (The usual selective memory of Europeans.)

Todd also predicted a Eurasian alternative centered on Europe, Russia, Japan, and the Arab-Islamic world.

That second part has aged badly.

Todd was right that America would stop wanting to carry the whole postwar order. He was wrong that Europe or Eurasia would become the coherent successor.

The better take from the European point of view is: The American empire did not simply collapse. It mutated from universal order-maintenance into selective, transactional, technologically dominant, dollar-centered, hemispheric-and-maritime power politics.

That’s not the same as ‘we are no longer economically capable of paying for world governance even though we indirectly tax the world through the use of the dollar as a means of attempting to pay for it - especially when Americans consider Europeans free-riders who criticize america for lacking her democratic socialism which is subsidized by american money and lives.

So both the european and the american point of view are very different from Todd’s expectation of a stable Eurasian ‘emancipation’ from dependence upon America.

Instead the opposite happened - and the Trump Era’s attempt to force Europe (and the world) into regional responsibility while preserving some sense of the free trade of the Pax Americana is evidence of that opposite end.

In other words, his presumption that Europe would lead or could lead was an illusion permissible by the privilege of living under the American protectorate.

What Survives?

1. American retrenchment survives strongly.

The current U.S. strategic posture explicitly shifts burdens to allies. The 2025 U.S. National Security Strategy says wealthy allies must assume primary responsibility for their own regions and that the U.S. will act more as convener/supporter than as Atlas holding up the whole system.

That is almost exactly the direction Todd expected: not isolation in the simple sense, but refusal to subsidize the totality of the postwar order.

2. The “tribute” thesis partly survives.

Todd’s claim that America consumes beyond its productive-account balance still has force.

The United States current-account deficit was $1.12 trillion in 2025, and the U.S. net international investment position was negative $27.54 trillion at year-end, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

But the corrective qualification is decisive: this has not produced collapse because the dollar remains the central reserve asset. And the reason is not magic. It is the U.S. government and Treasury’s defense of the dollar, the scale of the American economy, the depth of American capital markets, the military and legal architecture beneath them, and the extraordinary property rights Americans possess relative to most of the rest of the world.

The dollar still accounted for 56.77% of disclosed official foreign-exchange reserves in 2025Q4, while the euro was 20.25% and the renminbi only 1.95%. (IMF Data)

So while Todd correctly saw dependency; he underestimated the durability of dollar-network power.

3. The critique of American universalism survives.

Todd saw that American ideological authority would decline if America ceased to appear universal, egalitarian, and procedurally legitimate.

After Iraq, Afghanistan, surveillance, financial crisis, domestic class polarization, identity conflict, selective intervention, and elite institutional distrust, that claim is stronger now than in 2002.

But the missing comparative point is that America’s rivals have not generated a superior universalist offer.

• China offers development-authoritarianism;

• Russia offers imperial-civilizational grievance;

• Europe offers regulation and welfare without sufficient strategic agency.

So American legitimacy declined, but no replacement legitimacy consolidated.

4. The “micromilitarism” thesis survives only historically.

Todd’s claim fit the War on Terror: the U.S. spent immense resources proving military indispensability against weak or semi-collapsed states.

But it fits the present less well. The problem now is not merely America choosing weak enemies to conceal weakness. The problem is that nuclear escalation, industrial depth, missile/drone attrition, supply-chain dependence, and domestic tolerance constrain action against real powers.

Great-power competition has returned, but decisive victory has become too costly to operationalize.

What failed?

1. Europe did not emancipate.

This is Todd’s largest failed forecast.Europe did not become a coherent strategic pole. It became richer than most of the world, but not sovereign in energy, defense, technology, demographics, or decision speed.

The Draghi competitiveness report says Europe’s productivity gap with the United States is largely explained by the tech sector; that only four of the world’s top fifty tech companies are European; and that the EU workforce is projected to shrink by close to two million workers per year by 2040.

That falsifies Todd’s expectation that Europe would naturally replace America as the rational center of global equilibrium.

If I were to levy my most common criticism against the French ruling imagination, it is this: France retains the illusion that its ideology, model, culture, science, and technology remain universally desirable, despite no longer possessing the fiscal, technological, demographic, military, economic, or institutional capacity to impose, export, or defend them.

French universalism survives rhetorically. It does not presently survive operationally. The French state has buried itself in debt since its modern formation and lacks a credible exit scientifically, technologically, economically, militarily, strategically, or even culturally.

If anything, Germany remains the heart of Europe. Thankfully, Germany is returning, however painfully and reluctantly, to her historical mission: the organization of Europe’s productive, industrial, and defensive center.

In my judgment, France as the presumed core of Europe is as great a threat to European strategic recovery as Russia and Islamism, because Russia and Islamism are external or civilizational threats, while French pretension misleads Europe from within.

2. The Europe-Russia alignment failed.

Todd anticipated Russia’s “return,” but misclassified its form. Russia did return — not as a stabilizing partner in a Eurasian equilibrium, but as a revisionist imperial power.

The EU now frames Russia’s war against Ukraine as a full-scale war of aggression and has adopted sanctions and massive support for Ukraine. (Consilium)

This did not emancipate Europe from America; it forced Europe back into hard-security dependency while trying to rearm.

Todd understood that Russia mattered. He failed to understand that Russia would matter as empire, not as equilibrium.

3. China was underweighted.

Todd’s model was still too Europe-Russia-Japan centered.

China has become the main industrial, military, and technological competitor. By IMF 2026 nominal GDP estimates, the U.S. is still larger at about $32.38 trillion, but China is already around $20.85 trillion and the EU around $23.03 trillion.

In PPP-share terms, China is already above the U.S. and EU, with about 19.89% of world GDP versus 14.54% for the U.S. and 13.77% for the EU. (IMF)

Todd saw American relative decline; he did not adequately foresee the China-centered industrial challenge.

4. Russia and China also face demographic ceilings.

The present world is not simply “America declines, Eurasia rises.”

It is:

“all major advanced and industrial poles age, while state capacity and technological leverage determine who decays slower.”

China’s population fell for a fourth consecutive year in 2025; births dropped to 7.92 million, and Reuters reports China’s fertility at roughly one birth per woman. (Reuters)

So China is dangerous not because it has solved the imperial problem, but because it may be peaking under demographic compression while still possessing enormous industrial and military capacity.

5. American hard power did not evaporate.

Todd’s “decline” claim becomes misleading if read as incapacity.

The U.S. remains the largest military spender. SIPRI reports U.S. military spending at $954 billion in 2025, versus China at an estimated $336 billion and Russia at $190 billion.

Europe’s total military spending rose sharply, but that was because the threat environment deteriorated, not because Europe had already become sovereign. (SIPRI)

America is not weak in the ordinary sense. It is unwilling to continue universal subsidization at the old price.

That is a very different phenomenon.

The Clean Adjudication

Todd’s book survives as a critique of American overextension. It does not survive as a theory of post-American order.

His durable claim:

America cannot indefinitely act as consumer of last resort, security guarantor of first resort, ideological universalist, and imperial enforcer while its domestic legitimacy, fiscal balance, and productive base erode.

His failed claim:

The world would naturally rebalance around a more rational Eurasian configuration, especially Europe plus Russia.

The present evidence says something harsher:

The successor to American unipolarity is not Eurasian maturity. It is competitive imperial restoration under demographic decline, technological bifurcation, and institutional exhaustion.

So my understanding is: Todd correctly identified the failure of the American order’s operating margin. He did not correctly identify the replacement operating system.

The world did not move from American empire to balanced multipolar civilization. Tidal Macro (@tidalmacro) is a competent to strong BTC related, liquidity, and energy analyst.
2. Tidal Macro (’@tidalmacro) is not primarily a geopolitical strategist or forecaster in the full sense.

So respect where respect is due.

Yet, I believe his estimation in this matter is instructive (educates the public) but over-predictive. Which is the same criticism I would levy against even someone like @PeterZeihan or @George_Friedman who I respect deeply, followed by a host of others who I do not - for slightly different reasons.

Like most analysts of economic data during the Pax Americana, all are victims of the same causes (generally called ”historicism”), which in this case does not account for the increase in information flow over the past twenty years has limited the determinism of historical means of economic and strategic prediction because it has empowered state actors, financial actors, industrial and commercial actors, to act early rather than be caught in the traditional deterministic flow of events. In other words, it is far harder for momentum to produce previously deterministic outcomes.

Or said more simply and concretely, world actors can more completely resist becoming victims of momentum producing deterministic outcomes by taking early actions, on better information, and can have greater political confidence in adapting to circumstances - holding out longer with greater confidence at lower risk.

By analogy think of production in terms of just in time manufacturing due to the standardization of shipping, and software in terms of iterative development and releases due to distribution by the internet.

The same is true of political decisions - we are not such prisoners of the time frame and information deficit of the past.

This evolution of informational accessibility, combined with their increasing capacity to undermine the Pax Americana, when combined with american exhaustion with remaining domestication of empires into federations of nation states, is what is driving the three remaining authoritarian agrarian (territorial) empires of Russia, China and Iran, to take risks they may not have in the relatively recent past.

And that is driving the USA under the present administration to attempt a division of responsibility by the circumpolar civilizations plus india (china, russia, india, Europe, and the Anglosphere) because of the extraordinary costs of reversing Pax Americana’s generation of worldwide prosperity it would impose upon all if fractured.

The civilized world does not want to end Pax Americana so much as have a voice in it. The three empires that survived the world wars to end empires in favor of nation states and federations thereof are yet uncivilized.

And honestly, that appears to be because they are either tangent to Islam or Islamic civilization itself - the least redeemable civilization on earth with the furthest to go.

Cheers

Curt Doolittle

Originally posted on X:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/curtdoolittle/status/2064505430316028226","full_text":"@DRolandAnderson @tidalmacro @LudwigNverMises PUTTING THE CAPACITY OF GEOSTRATEGIC PREDICTION IN CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT\nRE: --\"Sal Goodarzi's @tidalmacro analysis claims China faces an operational oil reserve limit of roughly 262 days due to maritime disruptions and mandatory refining/re-export of crude to sustain Russia and","username":"curtdoolittle","name":"Curt Doolittle","profile_image_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/profile_images/1609015917672890368/mERHMbDy_normal.jpg","date":"2026-06-10T00:30:25.000Z","photos":[],"quoted_tweet":{},"reply_count":0,"retweet_count":1,"like_count":0,"impression_count":1,"expanded_url":null,"video_url":null,"video_preview_media_key":null,"belowTheFold":true}" data-component-name="Twitter2ToDOM">

"It is a Moral Imperative to Denounce Advocacy for the Criminality of Islam"

Advocacy for The Teachings of Islam?

Curt Doolittle

Advocacy for The Teachings of Islam?

Or “how to help a person with an average IQ of only 84 remain an ignorant, low trust, sixth century tribalist continuing the thousand year rebellion by arabs against Persian religion and Greek reason, rule of law of the natural law, testimonial truth, political order at scale, advanced economies, empirical analysis, scientific discovery, so that people a full standard deviation in IQ below europeans and east asians can feel false confidence in their competence despite having turned six great civilizations of the ancient world, their monuments, arts, letters, cultures, and polities into dust by the the doom of self reinforcing superstitious low trust primitive ignorance and poverty.”

It’s not just that islam can be life changing for the nitwittery. AI is vying for the next spot. I assumed genetics would for the next spot. But it’s impossible to tell. We are just getting started with AI and it’s going to be as disruptive as the industrial. The question is whether it’s going to be as rewarding as the technological. Hard to tell.

The History of Technological Disruptions:

12000BC: Agrarian Revolution > 3000BC: Bronze age Revolution > ~1200 BC: Iron Age Revolution > 800-500BC Greco Roman Institutional Revolution > (dark ages) > ~1000–1300 AD: Medieval Technological Revolution > ~1100s-1500’s centuries: Empirical Revolution > ~1700–1800s: Second Agrarian Revolution > ~1400 -1600s: Age of Sail (Transport Revolution) > 1540-1700: Scientific Revolution >~1760–1840: Industrial Revolution >~1870–1914: Technological Revolution > ~1940s–present: Digital / Information / Third Industrial Revolution > ~2010s–future: Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) / AI & Bio-Cognitive Revolution.

But where does that leave us?

AI solves cognition; it does not by itself solve order.

I am reasonably confident I can see how AI plays out over the next twenty years. I am far less confident about the domestic and international order into which AI will be absorbed. The difficulty is that multiple long cycles appear to be terminating at once: globalism as world division of labor and trade; the postwar consensus of Pax Americana, finance, law, free trade, economic development, and human rights; the six-hundred-year period of European advantage and expansion; the productivity gains from moving labor out of agriculture into manufacturing; and the later gains from moving labor out of manufacturing into large white-collar administrative pools. These cycles are ending just as demographic contraction, institutional overextension, public debt, entitlement dependency, and progressive assumptions of endless growth all converge.

So the problem is not that the future is unknowable. The problem is that too many equilibrating mechanisms are failing at the same time. AI will almost certainly produce a revolution in cognition, administration, software, research, and institutional process. But whether that revolution compounds into another technological golden age, or is absorbed into fiscal crisis, political fragmentation, demographic decline, and institutional sclerosis, depends on the world order that receives it.

I do not think we are entering a dark age. But I also do not assume that the next era will be as orderly, cumulative, or universally beneficial as the past six hundred years of European expansion, or the past seventy to eighty years of American-led institutional order. Those periods may have been historically abnormal: unusually productive combinations of energy, demography, law, finance, military security, technology, trade, and institutional confidence.

That is the practical problem. I work daily on the question of the future human order, because AI alone does not solve order. It solves cognition. Order requires decidability, authority, reciprocity, warranty, and institutions capable of converting knowledge into legitimate action. And it is not obvious that we can improve upon the postwar order unless we can replace its decaying assumptions with a better grammar of cooperation.

Cheers ;)

Originally posted on X:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://x.com/curtdoolittle/status/2057669245841047688","full_text":"BIG TECH IS JUST THE MOST RECENT ITERATION OF TECHNOLOGICAL CONCENTRATION OF INNOVATION\n\nBig tech is just the equivalent of the industrial tycoons of the industrial revolution. But because (and the genetics will proves this in the next fifteen years or so) that some populations, due to historical factors, reduced the asymmetry of cognitive sexual dimorphism generating males who constantly employ the female means of warfare by undermining, sedition, propaganda and treason .... because that is the cognitively female instinct in relation to dominant males.

That’s the science.
