On August 31, Grayscale researcher Zach Pandl published a note called Zcash and the Privacy Imperative. He argues that artificial intelligence is starting a third wave of public concern about money privacy. The first wave came in the 1970s when computers began storing bank records. The second wave came in the 1990s as the internet spread personal data. This third wave is different because public blockchains publish every transfer for anyone to read.

This linking was already possible. AI makes it faster, cheaper, and available to many more people.

United States research bodies have said the same thing in different words. The National Institute of Standards and Technology has warned that AI creates new risks of re-identification. That means taking data that looks anonymous and matching it back to a real person. The Government Accountability Office has also described how AI can combine separate data sets and infer details that no single file would reveal.

This matters for every major network that keeps a transparent history. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana all publish activity by design. That design is useful. It lets anyone check that a payment happened. It also creates a permanent record that future software can study at scale. As more value moves on chain, that record grows. As AI agents begin to hold wallets and pay for services on their own, small repeated transfers will grow even faster. More machine payments mean more data for analysis tools to work with.

Zero-knowledge proofs are one technical answer. This is a form of mathematics that lets a network confirm a payment is valid without publishing the sender, the receiver, or the amount. Zcash uses this method in what it calls shielded transfers. Grayscale notes that by mid-2026 about nine in ten Zcash transactions used the shielded path. On August 25, Grayscale listed a spot Zcash fund on NYSE Arca. Those facts do not make any single coin a guaranteed solution. They show that a large asset manager now treats privacy as an investment theme driven by AI.

I do not treat this as a call to abandon open networks. Open records remain one of crypto's strongest features. I treat it as a design problem the industry can no longer postpone. That balance will shape who moves serious activity onto blockchains.

This is not a small software update. It is the first time validators and stakers used an official on-chain process to set a money rule that the whole network must follow.

The proposal is called SGP-0002. That means Solana Governance Proposal number 2. People also call it Double Disinflation.

Disinflation is a simple idea. The network creates new SOL every year to pay people who help run it. That yearly amount of new coins already gets smaller over time. Until now it shrank by 15 percent each year. The vote decided it will now shrink by 30 percent each year.

The vote passed with 67 percent support. It needed two-thirds, or 66.67 percent. It cleared the line by a very small amount.

About 176 million SOL voted yes. About 66 million voted no. Another 21 million chose not to take a side. More than 60 percent of the eligible stake took part. That is the highest turnout Solana has recorded for a vote of this kind.

The final hours were close. One large exchange validator had voted against the change. Near the end it switched most of its stake to yes. That move of roughly 8 million SOL helped the proposal pass. Another large firm also changed its position in the last stretch. The people who wrote the proposal spent the final hours contacting validators to explain the numbers.

The change does not start today. Developers still have to write the code and turn the new rule on. That work will take months, not days.

When it does start, the network will create about 18.9 million fewer SOL over the next six years than it would have created under the old schedule. That is a real reduction in future supply.

The long-term inflation rate, which is the yearly pace of new coins, was due to reach 1.5 percent around 2032. It will now reach that low level around the first half of 2029.

There is a trade-off. Staking rewards are the payments people receive for locking their SOL to help secure the network. Those rewards will fall faster under the new schedule. Some estimates put them near 2.25 percent in three years, lower than the path they were on before.

This vote happened at the same time large financial firms increased their interest in SOL.

Charles Schwab, which serves about 39 million accounts, announced plans to add SOL to its crypto platform in the coming months. Bitwise’s Solana fund passed 1 billion dollars in assets under management. Spot funds that track SOL recorded strong inflows this month, including one of the largest single days of the year. Goldman Sachs disclosed tens of millions of dollars in related exposure.

SOL rose about 46 percent in August. That was the first monthly gain in ten months. The price moved back above 100 dollars and reached levels not seen since January.

The network itself is also busier than it has ever been. It processed a record number of transactions in July. Recent weeks set another high for non-vote activity. Tokenized stocks, which are digital versions of real company shares that trade on Solana, continue to grow in volume and number of holders.

The same vote package passed a constitution that sets the rules for future decisions. A third proposal that would have burned more fees each day did not pass.

The network is getting faster at the same time. The time between new blocks has already been cut. More cuts are planned. A larger transaction format is scheduled for September 9.

This week stands out because the community used a formal process to change its own money rules while the vote was still in doubt, and still reached a decision. That is a sign the network is growing up.

Future supply will now decline faster. Demand from large platforms is rising. Activity on the chain is at record levels. Those three facts form the single most important picture in the Solana ecosystem today.

A slot is the short fixed window of time given to a validator to produce the next block of transactions. For years the target stood at 400 milliseconds. On 21 August the network moved that target to 350 milliseconds. Average slot times are already running near 360 milliseconds. This is the opening step of a planned four-stage path that aims to reach 200 milliseconds.

The change sits inside SIMD-0525 and rides on the Agave 4.2 client. Each later cut will move in 50-millisecond steps: 300 milliseconds, then 250, then 200. Validators and developers receive time to observe network health between steps. If skip rates rise above agreed thresholds the next reduction can pause. The design is deliberate and measured.

Shorter slots produce three practical effects. First, transaction confirmations arrive sooner. Users and applications wait less time for a transaction to settle. Second, the period any single leader controls block production shrinks. That shortens the window in which one participant could theoretically delay or reorder activity. Third, the network can process more blocks in the same calendar time without simply raising the compute limit per block. The compute budget itself is adjusted downward in proportion so that the work demanded of validators each second remains manageable.

These improvements matter most where speed and predictability already determine real usage. Market makers can quote tighter spreads because the risk of stale prices falls. Decentralised exchanges and perpetual platforms experience cleaner matching. Tokenised real-world assets and equity products gain more reliable settlement windows. Applications that rely on continuous low-latency interaction, including those serving autonomous software agents, face less friction. The same infrastructure that already carries the large majority of on-chain equity trading volume becomes more competitive against centralised venues on latency alone.

The upgrade does not stand alone. Agave 4.2 also delivered a large reduction in rent costs and an increase in maximum transaction size. Together the changes expand the kinds of programmes and data that can live on-chain at acceptable cost. Yet the slot-time reduction is the clearest signal that core performance parameters continue to move after years of stability at 400 milliseconds.

A new security study examined fifteen major facilitators of the x402 payment standard. Right now the network produces a new block roughly every 400 milliseconds. That interval is called the slot time. It is the basic clock of the entire system. In the coming days validators will begin adopting Agave version 4.2. This client update carries the first real reduction of that clock.

The change is governed by a proposal known as SIMD-0525. It lowers the target slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds as the opening step. Third, the shorter leader windows improve fairness. Each validator that produces blocks holds the microphone for a briefer period. This reduces the window in which any single operator can extract value from transaction ordering and spreads opportunity more evenly across the set of producers.

Agave 4.2 also ships two other major changes in the same release window. Rent costs for accounts fall by 90 percent in stages. Keeping data on the network becomes dramatically cheaper. At the same time the maximum size of a single transaction rises from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes. Complex operations that once required multiple linked transactions or lookup tables can now settle in one atomic step. Zero-knowledge proofs, large multi-signature schemes, and advanced financial packages all become simpler to execute.

These upgrades sit inside a larger sequence. The complete code for Alpenglow, the next consensus redesign, travels with Agave 4.2 so that validators can begin testing it in controlled environments. Alpenglow itself will activate later, but the groundwork is already moving into production clients.

The timing is deliberate. Solana has just processed more than one billion non-vote transactions in a single week. Tokenized equity volume on the network reached 1.45 billion dollars in July and captured the large majority of global on-chain equity trading. Modeling shows this removes approximately 18.9 million SOL from future issuance over a six-year period.

The second proposal rewrites the base transaction fee. Today every signature carries a flat 5,000-lamport fee. Half is burned and half goes to the block producer. The new design splits that fee. A fixed 2,500-lamport inclusion fee is paid entirely to the producer. A separate resource fee is calculated from the compute units the transaction requests. That resource fee is burned in full. The burn rate rises in stages and reaches a terminal level that, at recent network activity, produces daily burns between 7,500 and 9,000 SOL. Current daily burns sit near 650 SOL. The increase is therefore twelve to fourteen times larger.

Validators still receive a reliable inclusion fee, so their incentives remain intact while the burn scales with demand.

For long-term holders the combined effect is a tighter supply path. Net issuance falls. The link between network growth and token scarcity becomes stronger. For builders and institutions the change signals that Solana’s monetary policy is responsive to real usage rather than fixed in advance. The proposals cleared the 15 percent stake threshold with support from large operators including Helius and Jupiter. The world’s largest asset manager has launched the BlackRock Daily Reinvestment Stablecoin Reserve Vehicle, known as BRSRV. BlackRock manages roughly fifteen trillion dollars in total assets. Its decision to record share ownership on Solana marks the firm’s first use of the network for a tokenized fund product. Shares move through a permissioned system connected to the public blockchain and are managed by the transfer agent Securitize. The minimum investment sits at three million dollars, confirming the product targets institutions rather than retail users.

This development matters because stablecoins have become the primary medium of exchange across onchain markets. Their total market value exceeds three hundred billion dollars, and they settle trillions in volume each year. Regulated issuers must hold high-quality reserves. x402 works by turning the old internet signal for “payment required” into a complete machine-readable process. An AI agent requests a service or piece of data.
