Hollywood Isn’t Fun for Kids. It’s Hell.

There's a version of my story I keep telling because nobody else in this industry will.

For 15 years, before I became who I am now, I worked inside the machine that produces child stars. I cast kids for Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. I flew from city to city discovering little kids for shows and movies. And later, I became one of the go-to acting coaches in Los Angeles - parents from all over the country, all over the world, paid me serious money to sit with their kids and get them audition-ready, or camera-ready, or agent-ready.

I did that work for 15 years. I know this industry from the inside, not from the outside looking in.

So when something like the Hayden Panettiere conversation comes up, I have opinions. Just my opinion, for what it’s worth - but it’s an opinion built on a decade and a half of watching this up close.

Here’s what I believe, and I say it with love, because a lot of my closest friends are still casting directors and agents. They’re still out there every day trying to find kids for roles. This isn’t an attack on them.

Hollywood, for children, is TOXIC.

I don’t say that lightly. But you cannot put your kid into this industry and assume nothing bad is going to happen — to your family, to your relationships, to their health, to their sense of self, to the inner dialogue they carry with them for the rest of their life. It is a genuinely brutal world to hand a child over to.

I want to be clear about where the line is for me. If you’re an adult and you want to act — do it. Local theater, musical theater, an acting class because it lights you up — go for it, wholeheartedly. I’m all for adults chasing that.

But pushing a kid into Hollywood is different. Everyone on the outside thinks it looks like fun. It is not fun. It is hell.

So why do parents do it?

I’ll say this carefully, because it’s not a simple answer and I don’t want to paint every family with the same brush. Sometimes there’s a kid who is genuinely desperate for it — who can’t imagine doing anything else with their life. I’ve met those kids. They’re real, and their drive is real.

But then there’s another kind of kid. The kind who has figured out, somewhere along the way, that booking the audition makes mommy proud. That doing well in the room makes mommy happy. And when you’re a young kid, that’s all you want in the world — to make your mom happy.

That’s the part that breaks my heart. Because a child chasing an audition to feel loved is not the same thing as a child chasing a dream. And an industry that can’t tell the difference - or worse, doesn’t care to - is not a safe place to leave a child unattended in.

I’ve seen both kinds of kids. I’ve coached both kinds of kids. And fifteen years in, that distinction is the one I can’t stop thinking about.

The Lindsay Clancy Trial Doesn't Need a Plot Twist

I’ve been following the Lindsay Clancy trial closely, for reasons some of you already know. And in the last few weeks, as testimony has piled up, I’ve watched a specific kind of noise grow louder online. People are floating the idea that Patrick Clancy is somehow responsible. That he did it, or helped, or knew more than he’s let on. That the real story is being covered up.

I want to talk about why I’m not buying it, and why I think we all need to be more careful with this instinct.

I Almost Understood How a Mother Could Snap. Then I Read About Lindsay Clancy.

October of 2015 in Los Angeles was unseasonably hot. We were hitting high 90’s in the North Hollywood area, where I lived with my husband Lance, and my two boys Dylan (almost 3) and Oliver (5 months).

My first born Dylan was the easiest baby. We used to just marvel at how well he slept, ate, and behaved. He would constantly smile and entertain himself for what felt like hours at a time. Parenting was challenging of course, especially as a full time working mom, but it was pleasurable and dare I say fun?

The universe basically laughed at me when my second son, Oliver was born in June 2015. The birth was chaotic and the adorable chubby baby that came home was… how do I put this… NEEDY.

Are Audiobooks Cheating??

Audiobooks are cheating and I don’t care.

I said what I said. Audiobooks are cheating. You are not “reading” a book while you drive to Target, I don’t care what the app says, I don’t care about your streak, I don’t care that you’ve “read” 47 books this year. You listened to them. There’s a difference and we all know it, we just don’t want to admit it because 47 sounds a lot more impressive than 12.

And also? I do not care. I will keep doing it forever.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about being a mom of two boys: reading, the actual sit-down-with-a-cup-of-tea-and-a-blanket kind of reading, is basically a fantasy at this point. I used to be that girl. Book in one hand, wine in the other, three uninterrupted hours ahead of me. Now if I open an actual physical book after 8pm I’m asleep by page two, and if I try to read during the day someone needs a snack, a referee, or help finding a shoe that is definitely under their own bed.

So audiobooks became my loophole. My cheat code. My cheating.

Last week I “read” an entire book folding laundry. Not skimmed it, not half paid attention, actually absorbed the whole thing, plot twist and all, while matching approximately four hundred tiny socks that belong to nobody. I had my AirPods in, a mountain of towels on the couch, and I was fully gone. There’s a scene where [main character redacted so I don’t spoil it for you] finds out the truth about her sister and I actually gasped out loud, mid fold, and scared my dog.

That’s the part that gets me. I wasn’t half listening the way I half listen to a podcast while I answer emails. I was IN it. I cried a little over a fitted sheet. I had a whole emotional reaction to a plot twist whil

e sorting whites from darks. If that’s not reading, I genuinely don’t know what to call it, but fine, call it cheating, I’ll take the trophy anyway.

Here’s my real hot take though: I think the “audiobooks don’t count” thing is less about what actually counts as reading and more about guilt. We’ve decided that if it’s easy, if it fits into a life that’s already full, it doesn’t count as much. Like the story only matters if it costs you something. I don’t buy that anymore. The story hit me the same whether I was staring at a page or elbow deep in a laundry basket. My kids still got fed. My laundry still got done. And I still got my book.

So yes. Audiobooks are cheating. I am a proud, unrepentant cheater, and I will be “reading” my next book with a laundry basket as my library.

What "Voicemails For Isabelle" Did For Me

I have to be honest: I HATE Hallmark movies. Lifetime movies, too. I don’t care who is starring in it, who is directing, whether it’s Christmas themed or well reviewed.

I find them cheesy, unwatchable and downright boring.

So you can imagine how the movie Voicemails For Isabelle (on Netflix) sounded to me.

I saw it on the main menu, and quickly turned away. It looked cheesy and just another romcom… who has time for that?

See, I used to work in the entertainment industry as a casting director. I was in casting and then worked as an Agent for the better part of 15 years. I cast for Disney, Nickelodeon, ABC, MTV, CBS, CW, FOX and more. By the time I left the business, my second child was 2 and I was BURNT OUT.

I was sick of working with actors, their parents (helllllo, stage moms and dads), agents, managers, producers, writers and even wardrobe. It all left me feeling empty, unappreciated and honestly, bored.

I knew there was more for me out there… I just had to find it.

This post isn’t about all of the hurdles, jobs, coaching courses, pivots and obstacles I went through from 2018 until now… don’t worry, I’ll tell you more about that soon. The important part of this is that I am, in 2026, a top TV/film podcaster and youtuber who covers celeb gossip, pop culture, true crime, reality TV and more.

Yes: I now talk about what I used to hate being part of. Trust me, it’s so much better on this side.

Cut to: Voicemails for Isabelle.

I had been hearing and seeing some positive reviews for this movie that sparked my interest. People said it made them laugh and cry. They spoke about the story and that it was just like the movies that we loved (and grew up with). And then I saw who was starring as the lead, Jill: Zoey Deutch.

Well NOW I was interested. See, when Zoey was 16 years old, I cast her on her first ever job, Suite Life on Deck (Disney). She played Dylan Sprouse’s girlfriend, and she was perfection.

Yes, she is actress Lea Thompson and director Howie Deutch’s daughter. So obviously the talent is in her blood. But that isn’t why we auditioned her and certainly wasn’t why she got the role.

It’s because she was adorable, talented and beautiful. Oh, and knew comedic timing… which is everything.

So I gave Voicemails For Isabelle a try. And what conspired over the next 90 minutes or so was pure perfection. I cried, then laughed, then swooned and then cried again. Rinse, repeat.

The final scene was so perfect that I found myself clutching my heart with tears streaming down my cheeks and a huge smile on my face.

THIS MOVIE WAS PERFECTION.

Life, social media and even reality TV has gotten so dark. Everything is about arguing and politics and wars and insults and alcoholism and abuse. We need a break.

We need an escape in the form of a love story that takes us on an emotional rollercoaster, and also happens to have a perfect soundtrack.

And Zoey Deutch was SO good that I posted about the movie with tears on Instagram… and in the middle of her crazy press week, she commented and thanked me for discovering her.

The movie is on my MUST WATCH list now, and trust me, I will be watching this one over and over and over.

Dare I say Voicemails For Isabelle is an instant classic.

From a Casting Director to a Content Creator...

Let me be honest with you right from the start: I didn’t begin Substack because I had everything figured out.

I started it because I am always looking for a new way to connect with others (and also, I consider myself a pretty crappy writer so I want to practice!)…

I’ll be in the middle of cooking something new, or reading something that completely shifted my thinking, or figuring out a career move — and I’d have this thought: someone needs to know about this. Not in a “listen to me, I’m an expert” way. More like the way you text a friend when you find a restaurant that changes your life. You just want people you like to have the good thing too.

So here we are.

What my substack is actually about

The short version: it’s about living well on your own terms — in your work, your body, your kitchen, and your head.

The longer version: I’ve always been the kind of person who exists in multiple lanes at once. I care about building a career I’m proud of and having fun drinking wine with girlfriends and reading amazing books and puzzling and eating food that makes me happy and feeling good in my body and not burning out in the process. And I’ve never loved the idea that you have to pick one of those things to care about.

So here I will cover all of it — lifestyle, business, wellness, career, exercise, LA life and food — because that’s actually how life works. None of it is separate.

Every week you’ll get something that’s actually useful. Not vague inspiration poster stuff. Real things: what I’m trying, what’s working, what failed spectacularly, and what I think you should know.
