The Lunar Landscape

Eclipse part two hits us just in time for the weekend. Only this time we’re wrapping up a cycle— not opening one.

I’m going to stand ten toes down and say that this eclipse is more important than the one we had two weeks ago. The lunar nodes have only recently just ingressed into their new home of the Aquarius/Leo axis, so let’s not be so quick to forget where they came from.

Until recently, eclipses had been focused on the Pisces/Virgo axis. This was a cycle that was set in motion back in September of 2024. That cycle is rapidly coming to an end now that the lunar nodes have moved on, and this Full Moon marks the last eclipse within the Piscean portion of the axis. We’ll still have to close down Virgo, but that’s not until February of next year. This means that not only are we fully closing out half of the cycle, but that this is the last eclipse for the 2026 calendar year. We’ll be done with eclipses for the remainder of the year after this one.

But we do have to get through it— so let’s see what we’re working with and how we can best close out the Piscean portion of the axis.

This is a Full Moon eclipse, meaning that this will be a highlighter event. The Moon’s illumination is going to be purposeful. It’s something we cannot turn away from if we want to close out this cycle effectively. We should be pretty familiar with this area of life and all the changes it’s gone through over the last 2 years. Not only were the lunar nodes causing eclipses, but we also had Saturn’s energy ravaging Pisces as well. This means we’re needing to— I hate to say it— revisit our time with Saturn in Pisces.

If we want to close this cycle out with clarity, then we need to reflect on our time with Saturn in Pisces. This area of life has been through so much, and this Full Moon eclipse is acting like the final moment of clarity. We’re no longer confused or displaced in this area of life. We have more awareness and control. It’s time to step up (if we haven’t already) and own the realm of Pisces. It’s time to usher in a new era.

Any upheavals or revelations will not shake us. We’ve been tempered by the school of Saturn and know where our footholds lie within the Piscean sea of squish. Trust in these footholds and it’ll look like you’re walking on water. Doubt these footholds and you’ll sink into a sea of nostalgia and confusion.

The Moon will be Jupiter-ruled, which calls Leo’s energy into the mix. The realm of Leo (and Aquarius) is where the lunar nodes are pointing their energy now. The ending of the Piscean cycle begets the beginning of the Leo cycle. We are utilizing our knowledge and awareness within Pisces to burst open the doors of wisdom elsewhere. If we can finish strong within the realm of Pisces, we will have well-rounded confidence moving into the next phase. Leo’s energy tangentially touches this Full Moon eclipse and reminds us to see ourselves in the change, to make the closing of the cycle personal.

The other important piece of this eclipse is that is takes place less than 24 hours after the Mercury cazimi. The Full Moon will be opposing Mercury and what we learn during the cazimi may add to what we need to be aware of when closing down the realm of Pisces. Emotion and logic will be at odds, but again, the school of Saturn has given us footholds to cling to reality within the realm of Pisces. Do not forgo these footholds you worked so hard to create. They will allow us to see the magic in Mercury’s domiciled logic.

1^st Decan of Pisces ♄

The 8 of Cups depicts what it means to walk away, to leave behind— to close a cycle. The man on the card carries his passion with him via his bright red garb, but he’s needing to leave behind his emotion and emotional attachments. It’s a great reminder that we can be fervent without being swayed emotionally.

The Full Moon eclipse happening within the decan of Saturn feels like a nod to Saturn’s lessons within Pisces. We need to recall what it was like when Saturn was in this area of our lives. If we forget the lessons and favor daydreams, we will not be able to close out this area of life with any real clarity. The logical means that Mercury is handing us may feel foreign at first, but if we search for Saturn’s footholds, we’ll see it’s actually the perfect solution.

The thing is, we are not being forced to walk away. We are not being forced to turn our backs. We are not being forced to close this cycle. We are choosing to. We are choosing to leave behind detrimental emotional ties and insidious nostalgia. We can be sad about doing what’s best for us while still doing what’s best for us.

The Fool

One of my favorite things about tarot is the story of the Fool’s Journey. When taken in numerical order, the major arcana cards tell a story centered around The Fool. The cards showcase his trials, triumphs, and growing pains throughout his journey. While I won’t be recounting that here (I’ve already done it on Moon Matters), it’s important to know that The Fool is a central figure that we’ll see time and time again in various iterations.

A tarot deck begins not with the number 1, but with 0. This was purposeful and not meant to be tricky for numerically-challenged people such as myself. Zero is circle. It is complete, whole, and contained. The Fool contains all experiences— past, present, and future. He can go in all directions while simultaneously having no direction.

What I’m getting at is that The Fool is both the ambition to try something novel and the wisdom of having already failed at it. It contains everything all at once while claiming none of it as its own. It’s the consciousness of a fool’s ambition and the subconscious wisdom carried throughout each iteration of the journey. Without The Fool, we would never know what it means to begin or begin again.

Astrological Correlations

The Fool is of the element of Air. There is no zodiac sign or planetary association. This means that the element of Air entirely encompasses The Fool— which is fitting since we just learned how it’s everything all at once while also embodying nothingness. It’s both rudimentary beginnings and wisened endings.

The airy nature of The Fool showcases freedom. The freedom to learn, to fail, to explore, to think, to inspire— to be entirely free. The Fool’s main energetic component is inspiration, and we’re free to do with that as we see fit. There are no constraints on the element of Air. It can feel like a ‘choose your own adventure’ book moment when The Fool makes an appearance in our lives. We know something is about to change, but the path to that change is often unclear.

We aren’t alone in needing to parse out what it is The Fool is asking of us. If we take our time with The Fool’s inspiration, we’ll see that we have wisdom and experience behind the inspiration. While the endeavor we’re about to embark on may be new, the life experience that brought us to that moment is not. We have a plethora of subconscious energy pushing us— guiding us— towards the precipice of the newest iteration of the journey.

The element of Air lets us know that The Fool is smarter than he leads on, even if he is unaware of it himself. The airy nature also indicates that there is change on the horizon. If we can become pliable in mind, the body will follow.

This isn’t to say that The Fool always knows what he’s doing! Even with wisdom and guidance nipping at his heels, he can be like the wind— gusty and erratic. While the element of Air lends possibility, it also lends rash decisions and spikes in unfounded ideas. The Fool is named aptly and we would be wise to remember that.

RWS vs Thoth

As we explore these cards, you’ll see that the Thoth deck is much more ornate, intricate, and sometimes obscure. The RWS deck does a fabulous job at conveying what it means, while the Thoth deck tends to shroud the intention in occult hubris. It should be noted that the RWS deck is roughly 60 years older— based on publication date.

Both Fools showcase the idea of a sacred jester. A man who is both God and a vagabond. One is about to walk off a cliff, the other is completely airborne and floating with nothing holding him up but his golden shoes. The Fool represents the idea (Air) that God was born from nothing, and yet created everything. The Fool holds our fertile ideas and grants them life in the form of inspired action— pushing us to burst forward like a seedling through the dirt.

The element of Air makes a home out of The Fool because it so easily invites liminal moments and the abstract mind. It’s both the beginning and the end. Everything springs from The Fool, and yet, it was born out of nothing.

There is an air-headed, innocent nature to The Fool as well. Again, it carries its wisdom in a place that’s not on its person. The corruption of the mind only happens once The Fool becomes aware of its own experience— its own worldly ambitions. The mind is the inception and the incineration of an idea. When The Fool graces us, we need to stay connected to the purity of our ideas and ambitions as best we can. As we say in meditation, embody a beginner’s mind. Even when you’re confident, walk as if you know nothing and are ready to learn everything.

Looking Ahead

The major arcana starts out strong with the first card embodying the entire element of Air. It’s the perfect introduction for an esoteric modality. It demonstrates how something can be both rudimentary and complex, innocent and corrupt, conscious and unseen, and even everything and nothing.

The Fool is a card that stands for fantasy and optimism, and the element of Air reminds us that we shouldn’t put limitations on our foolish daydreams. Even if we get stuck in the clouds from time to time, it’s better than never getting off the ground in the first place.

Our next stop in the major arcana is a card that utilizes every element in any way it sees fit. Can you take a guess as to who it is?

The connections we glean between the two are not mere coincidence. While tarot may be give or take 3,500 years younger than astrology, it was highly molded and influenced by it. Every tarot card has astrological connections. From planets and elements to decans and zodiac signs, astrology is subtly laced throughout the major, minor, and court cards.

Knowing the astrological implications of tarot can help us understand both modalities in new and exciting ways. The occultists that brought these cards to life infused them with astrological magick and meaning. The cards can be used in a solitary manner, but I find they burst with greater significance when surrounded by the knowledge of their foundational creation.

This is a kickoff article to a series where I take a journey through the major arcana. It’s an exploration of astrological connection, but also symbolism and myth. Whether you use tarot or not, exploring the astrological connections within the cards can help strengthen your astrological framework. Knowing that ‘The Magician’ is Mercury’s card or that ‘The Moon’ is actually the card of Pisces, not Cancer, will reveal greater astrological insight through examining why these choices were made.

Structure of a Deck

A traditional tarot deck is comprised of 78 cards— 22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana. The minor arcana can be further broken down into 40 pips and 16 court cards. The pips and courts have deep astrological significance, just as the majors do. If you’re familiar with astrological decans, then you may have seen tarot card associations with them. Those associations are via the pips.

There are four suits within any given deck, which equate to the four elements— Wands/Fire, Pentacles/Earth, Cups/Water, and Swords/Air. The entirety of the minor arcana is rooted in these elemental foundations. Each element has 10 numerical pip cards, beginning with Ace (1) and ending with 10.

The elements also play an important role in the astrological significance of the court cards, as each tier of the court relates to an element. The court cards are often overlooked when it comes to their astrological meaning, but once you know that the Queen of Wands is the watery part of Fire, it’s hard to go back to viewing them under any other light.

While it may be easy to ascribe modern numerology to the elemental pips, it’s actually little bit deeper than that. The 10 pip cards we see for each element relate to the 10 sefirot nodes on the tree of life. The RWS and Thoth decks were heavily influenced by the practice of Kabbalah, especially the Thoth deck. I won’t be covering Kabbalistic magick here, but it’s important to note that the tarot we use today, and any deck modeled off of the RWS template, utilizes Kabbalah, magick, and astrology. Even if you don’t adhere to these traditions, it’s important to know that the cards were born from them.

Choosing a Deck

There are two main tarot decks that I pull these astrological correlations from— the Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) deck and the Thoth deck. Both have connections to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, as the creators of each deck were known members of the occult society. These are the only decks I personally use and I stick fairly fiercely to the original iterations— meaning no spin-offs or recreations inspired by the original art.

The reason I adhere so strictly to these two decks and the original artwork is because it’s purposeful.

There is nothing within the illustrations of the RWS or Thoth decks that is by accident or simply artistic expression. Every seemingly random bird, water source, or slanted tree is deliberate. The colors were painstakingly chosen to evoke subconscious feeling and stir a deeper connection to a place we don’t readily have access to, yet can’t seem to ignore.

If you’re wanting to follow along with these articles and use your deck to study, I do recommend the RWS or Thoth deck. Both follow the same astrological structure (minus a few changes in the Thoth deck— because Crowley) and both are gold standards in the world of tarot. I’ll be referencing the cards themselves and showcasing symbolism, so it might be helpful to have them on hand.

If you have a beloved deck that differs from these two, feel free to use it regardless. It might be an interesting exercise to see if the original symbolism and astrological significance shows up in unexpected ways. Plus, it’s your life— do whatever you want.

Looking Ahead

Each major arcana card will have their own article since they carry a lot of weight, the court cards will be grouped by suit, and I haven’t decided on the pips yet. I may group them as one large post, break them in half, or save them for when I write about the decans— we’ll cross the bridge when we get there.

This examination is not about understanding the significations of the cards themselves, but rather, their astrological correlations. Although, I have a suspicion that one will beget the other. If my time as an occultist has taught me anything, it’s that everything is connected.

The Lunar Landscape

We’re in eclipse season— simple as that. All eclipses signify a heightened period of time within the realm that they occur, but this one has a little extra spice to it. Not because it’s taking place within a Fire realm or because the Sun is domiciled, but because this is a kickoff eclipse.

This is the first eclipse we’re having within the Leo portion of the Aquarius/Leo axis. The realm of Aquarius already saw its first eclipse back in February, but now it’s fixed Fire’s turn.

What does this inaugural eclipse mean? It means we can’t even begin to anticipate what’s to come within the realm of Leo. There’s been an abundance of new energy in Leo— Jupiter’s ingression, Mercury’s ingression, the Jupiter cazimi, the lunar nodes (depending on what calculation you use)— and there’s a good chance we don’t know what to make of it yet. We’re only just beginning to remold and shape the karmic clay of fixed Fire. It’s brimming with unbridled possibility, but also inexperience and uncertainty.

Eclipses are known for being catalysts of upheaval and revealing information that we didn’t exactly anticipate. The realm of Leo is a place where we perform, where we’re pushed into the spotlight whether we care for it or not. The fact that this is a New Moon eclipse adds to the element of uncertainty, but also the freedom to rehearse as needed. We’re still in the process of setting the stage, writing the script, and learning our lines. What the eclipse pushes us towards may help with these endeavors.

A Leo Moon is bold, daring, and doesn’t shy away from using theatrics to express itself. There is a primal need to feel seen— to be adored. The realm of Leo is a place we’re looking for adoration, or at least appreciation. We can no longer ignore these desires and need to begin formulating how we’ll build a stage for our passions to be played out, performed, and ultimately— seen.

Fixed Fire is the sign of ego itself. Working with our ego will be a big part of how the realm of Leo comes together. What we discover, or allow ourselves to acknowledge, during this eclipse will likely come from inner work, self-reflection, and the need to know ourselves. If we don’t know who we are and what we want, we cannot build a worth-while fire within Leo. We need to be able to both identify our needs and also claim them as valid. It’s one thing to have desire, it’s another to be ashamed of desire and willingly turn away from it.

Part of the work we need to do with this eclipse is letting go of self-judgement and limiting beliefs. We need to radically embrace who we are and what we desire. Individuality and authenticity around self is the cure for what ails the realm of Leo. This may mean that we’re getting real with ourselves, calling ourselves out, and forcing a reconciliation of the person we want to be and the person we pretend to be. This lunar event is void of the typical glitz and glam we’ve come to expect from Leo, because Ketu digs past the facade and shows us the heart of the matter.

3^rd Decan of Leo ♂

The Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) imagery for the 7 of Wands showcases what it can feel like when we boldly express an opinion. We live in an age where we’re demonized for parroting the collective, and simultaneously attacked for stepping into an authentic expression of self. We’re constantly toeing the line of ingenuity and relatability.

The New Moon eclipse in this decan is an initiation. It’s crowing a new king within the realm of Leo and leaving behind an old regime— the one that lead us towards self-sabotage and limited growth due to outward expectation.

I’m a Libra rising. I see my Venusian tendencies play out in the way I move through the world and my deep love of aesthetics. As a traditional astrologer, I adopt the viewpoint of the ancient sages. I too, believe that the sign of the hour-marker leaves a distinguished imprint upon us.

What the hour-marker imbues is not some cheap gilding that will tarnish at the sight of the Sun. It’s a lasting signature that brands us—forever a walking billboard for the mythos that was rising at the time of our descent. We owe ourselves an examination of the Gods we’re advertising.

This is mine.

We know I’m a Libra rising, making my Ascendant Venus-ruled. The rest of my chart, however, is a bit of a hellcat. I embody all facets of Fire— cardinal, fixed, and mutable— with a heavy emphasis on mutable. My chart ruler is Mars in Gemini.

That’s another difference between the ancient and modern practitioners. Modern astrology will default to the Ascendant as the ruler of the chart. Traditional astrology has something called “The Master of the Nativity”, and that becomes the chart ruler. I won’t be showing that delineation here— that’s another day’s endeavor.

Suffice to say, my chart is fiery and ruled by Mars. This doesn’t exactly scream the type of decorum that Venus would typically be associated with. Despite the rage my Aries Moon holds, the praise my Jupiter in Leo in craves, or the many fires my Sagittarius stellium lights— Aphrodite has claimed this vessel.

What I’m examining here is both the physical imprint and the Fated one. I’m stepping back and peering into Aphrodite’s looking glass. The energy that was rising amongst the eastern horizon has imbued me with finesse I don’t deserve and social graces I all but squander. This is an examination— but also a hearty appreciation.

I want to preface this portion by saying that just as the Fate of other Libra risings will differ, so too will these physical characteristics. You have to take the chart in its entirety when assessing Fate, as well as how your rising manifests physically. Aspects to the Ascendant will play heavily into the formation of the physical. The Lunar Landscape

We have another Saturn-ruled lunar event on our hands— only now with less detriment! The Moon has no particular dignity within Aquarius, but that doesn’t mean it fully escapes the influence of Saturn. The cold and dry landscape of Aquarius is influenced by its Saturnian appetites, making this a place where the Moon has to operate in a more cool to the touch manner. Logic and aloofness reign supreme, so the Moon will have to adopt that attitude if it wants to assert its agenda.

For the Moon being under a sign that’s typically aloof, this lunar event is garnering a lot of attention. This is due to the opposition with the Juptier cazimi. We’ll get to that in minute, but let’s give the Full Moon its flowers and talk about the Aquarian agenda.

As previously stated, this is a cool to the touch lunar event. The Full Moon in Aquarius is highlighting the more grounded side of our emotions and showcasing something that could benefit from some of that pragmatism within the realm of Aquarius. Pragmatic doesn’t insinuate boring. This is an innovative Full Moon filled with the potential to disrupt our status quo and show us a better way to embody the realm of Aquarius. Fixed signs don’t often embrace avenues of change— let this Full Moon be a time where you do.

On its own, this Full Moon is exciting enough. We’re being given a chance to learn something new, disrupt a stagnant pattern, and throw out irrelevant data. We have plenty to keep us busy within the realm of Aquarius, but of course, there’s more.

The Full Moon opposing the Jupiter cazimi is something I’ve coined as “cazimimaxxing”. Both of these astrological events are highlighters— meaning they bring information to the surface, showcase new facets of the realm they inhabit, expand our conscious awareness, or provide new avenues of opportunity. The Full Moon will be in an exact opposition with the Jupiter cazimi, creating a pragmatic blaze of unfiltered potential.

I want to say this disclaimer loud and clear— this Full Moon/Jupiter cazimi moment will not change your life outright. It will not fix your problems. It will not temper your egoic expression into an altruistic albatross. It will, however, provide the raw materials and inspiration to spark a greater reckoning.

This cazimi opposition causes the Moon to bleed ingenuity and innovation into our ego. The blood that pulses through our veins will be drained and replaced with a more aligned vision of how we can embody self to serve other. “Me” melds into “We” as these two titanic forces oppose each other. The fixed nature of the opposition means we’re needing to bend, remove, and upend certain beliefs we hold. This is the only way to make space for what Jupiter whispers in the King’s ear, and the breakthrough discoveries that Selene toils to showcase.

If nothing else, this Full Moon will allow us to see the importance of remaining heart-centered in Leo and innovative in Aquarius. These agendas need not battle one another— there is room for both the desires of the heart and the requirements of the mind.

1^st Decan of Aquarius ♀

The first decan of Aquarius correlates to the 5 of Swords— which couldn’t explain this Full Moon/Jupiter cazimi opposition any better. There is a battle of Wills taking place. The Will of the heart and the Will of the mind. This card reminds us that some battles are nothing more than petty squabbles and that our time is better spent elsewhere.

We need to realize our limitations— both the ones that hold us back and the ones that keep us in check. The illuminations that find us during this Full Moon may not be as benefic as we would think (or like). They may actually rub up against our rooted thinking and force us to objectively examine whether or not we’re struggling against the tides of Fate.

Venus’ energy in this decan is looking for intellectual harmony. The Full Moon cannot illuminate and shed properly if we take anything but a logical stance. The realm of Aquarius may not understand or appreciate the methods of how the realm of Leo collected its data, but the data will be clear. It’s likely that the realm of Aquarius will need to accept “defeat” in order to reorient and make room for that discoveries and opportunities that the Jupiter cazimi is providing.

Like everything with Saturn, the amount of time it spends engaging in retrograde activity can be considered lengthy. From the end of July through basically the remainder of the 2026 calendar year, Saturn will be retrograde. That’s roughly 5 months of sorting, sifting, and sitting idle within the realm of Aries. And if you know anything about Aries energy, the only thing it hates more than not making progress, is backtracking.

The unfortunate reality is that we’re going to need to backtrack, or at the very least— slow down. Saturn retrogrades aren’t a period of doom and gloom, and they don’t bring any more hardship than any other retrograde. We need to dispel the fear around Saturn and get comfortable with the natural holding period it provides.

Over the next 5 months we can expect delays and detours within the real of Aries. These are not obstacles for obstacle sake. These are situations that, if we remain steadfast and patient with, will lead us exactly to where we want to be. There is no shortcut or roundabout that we can take. As much as the Aries energy of this transit would like there to be one— there just isn’t.

The good news is, this is a Mars-ruled retrograde, and Mars isn’t scared of getting its hands dirty. Aimless and restless at times, yes, but there is no shortage of ambition and determination. The key to this retrograde will be wrangling this martial energy into something productive while we wait through Saturn’s holding period. To understand how we can achieve this, we need to follow the retrograde ruler.

Mars, the ruler, will pass through Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo throughout Saturn’s retrograde. This means the way we tackle the retrograde and the stages of our waiting will differ as Mars transits each sign. The houses and zodiacal energy of where Mars is at any given moment will tell the story of how we should be honing our energy.

Saturn and Mars are both malefic planets. They understand what it means to be misunderstood, to take on thankless jobs, to rub people the wrong way in the name of progress, and to be the one who bears the brunt of dutiful obligation. This 5 month holding period is giving us a chance to rework obligation and understand the weight that we’re signing up (or have already signed up) to carry.

As you might expect, Saturn is going to make a good bit of aspects over the next 5 months. These will be helpful in navigating the retrograde, but nothing will be as helpful as looking to Mars. To know how we need to act, to know where the detour is taking us, we need to get good at playing follow the leader— Mars being the leader in this instance.

The realm of Aries is where Saturn’s retrograde will take place, but the way we change that area of life will be through Mars’ energy. Other areas need to shift and give way in order to accommodate what’s being built within Aries. This retrograde is Saturn putting a halt on our progression and doing an inspection of what we have so far. We must adhere to Saturn’s whims, but there will be haste born out of fallen dignity that will entice us to ignore Saturn’s caution sign and push for more. This is when we should turn to Mars and ride the ruler’s wave of enthusiasm down the backstreets— giving us a way to circumvent Saturnian construction and cultivating a feeling of progress, detour be damned.

Mars Transits

As previously mentioned, Mars will pass through four different signs throughout Saturn’s retrograde. This means we will have four different detours to take. We cannot forget that these detours are meant to bring us closer to the true agenda and purpose of Saturn in Aries. Don’t get so enraptured with the backroads that you forget why you took the detour in the first place.

I’ve romanticized running away and getting married as long as I can remember. You can even see it within my natal chart, as Venus is combust under the beams and exactly conjunct both Juno and Lilith. Stories like the one in Moulin Rouge were my north star, setting my expectations for an epic romance— but hopefully with less tuberculosis.

I’ve lived a rich romantic life, filled with many whirlwind romances. Chiron transiting my 7H has been a huge part of that whirlwind— weaving marriage, unrequited love, divorce, and eloping into my personal mythology over the last 9 years. I say “lived” a romantic life, but the truth is, it feels like it’s only just beginning.
