Soon after returning from San Diego and the John Finn autograph event, Red Rock Harley-Davidson wanted Metal of Honor to be displayed in their showroom. And the showroom and the bike looked beautiful.

The Red Rock Harley-Davidson showroom event was truly the first time Las Vegas locals got a chance to see the finished Metal of Honor.

One of the goals of creating this rolling history lesson was to take it to elementary schools to teach children about the “date which will live in infamy.” This 4^th grade class in Las Vegas loved the bike.

History taught through gleaming chrome and awesomely loud exhaust pipes. Now THAT’S a class I’d love to attend if I were a kid again.

All the kids loved it.

And now I wonder, 17 years after this event, do they “Remember Pearl Harbor”?

I bet they remember Metal of Honor.

One of the most incredible events was during the huge week-long Bike-toberfest motorcycle convention in Las Vegas. (now called Bikefest) Countless thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the western region of the US converged on Las Vegas. For the big Saturday evening of this weeklong event, organizers said NO motorcycles will be displayed on the wildly popular Freemont St. Experience… except for Metal of Honor. As the only one chosen out of thousands of spectacular custom bikes, I’m sure the other builders were quite jealous.

This showing was incredible. So many people wanted to learn about it. And one of the greatest compliments I ever received was when a lady approached me and said… “My husband is a Vietnam Veteran, and he’s over there crying after seeing your beautiful bike.” (See: “The Bike That Will Make You Cry”

The bike that’ll make you cry. Metal of Honor.

As an Honorary Member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Las Vegas Chapter 2, I knew I had to bring the bike out to the Survivors’ monthly meeting at the Nellis Air Force Base Officers Club for their inspection.

My dear friend and Pearl Harbor Survivor Clifton Dohrman got a chance to sit on Metal of Honor. Clifton was a Naval Aircrewman and Flight Engineer who flew aboard the famous PBY Catalina maritime patrol aircraft. And getting his approval meant a lot to me. His big smile says it all.

By now, Metal of Honor began receiving invitations to various events. Shown here, the bike was invited to be displayed in front of a restaurant in the beautiful island village of Coronado in San Diego. This event was held the night before the massive Coronado 4^th of July Parade in 2009, and John Finn was the evening’s guest of honor.

This event was the first time John got to see the bike in a public setting.

The big Coronado 4^th of July Parade was staging the next morning. Everywhere John went, fans and friends always wanted to shake his hand, take a picture with him, or get his autograph.

Metal of Honor stands ready to roll out in the parade. John’s escort convertible was decorated with enlarged photos of his Medal of Honor that I had shot while in Hawaii. It’s the same image that was used to decorate the gas tank.

Section 3 will include Metal of Honor requested to be on display at John Finn’s 100^th birthday, Metal of Honor requested by the family to escort John Finn’s funeral cortege 10 months later, and Metal of Honor makes its debut at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Metal of Honor was now back on the road after months of design and engraving work.

But not on the road with her pipes roaring, but placed in a beautiful vinyl-wrapped trailer, and on the road to John Finn’s home in the high desert east of San Diego. It was “inspection time”.

The rig. If you’re gonna haul around a “Rolling History Lesson”, you might as well travel comfortably. The new navy blue 2008 Ford Expedition was perfect for the job. The finished trailer after the vinyl wrap was applied to the 16-foot Interstate trailer.

The overall plan, was to take Metal of Honor on the road to promote the book I had been working on, “Pearls of Honor: Their Duty to Remember”. A coffee table-type book with hundreds of the more than 36,000 photographs I had taken of the Pearl Harbor Survivors. As you can see, I had the trailer designed to look like a roll of film stretching across it, with some of the Survivor images in each film frame.

The rear door of the trailer had a large image of the proposed book cover, for “Pearls of Honor: Their Duty to Remember”, and of course, it must be decorated with palm trees and hibiscus flowers.

The right side of the trailer, includes a photo of the very dapper John Finn, sporting his favorite cowboy hat, while attending the speech of President George W. Bush at Naval Air Station North Island, in San Diego, CA in 2005.

Speaking of John, it’s time to see what he thinks about the finished bike.

After arriving at John’s home located in the high desert just east of San Diego, I set up the bike on a stand so he could get a good look at it from all angles.

Of course it needed a grand unveiling moment.

John makes his way from the house to see this bike he had heard so much about. John was just two months shy of his 100^th birthday, and in great health.

Frances explained to John some of the more intricate details of the bike.

John said, “absolutely” when asked if he’d sign the tank.

John uses a Sharpie pen to put his John Hancock on the tank. It reads, “John W. Finn USN”

John also took the time to inspect the finished trailer. And coincidentally, wearing the same cowboy hat that he’s wearing in the image of him on the trailer.

John was famous for his incredible memory recall and love of telling Navy sea stories.

Thank you John Finn. You truly were “the rarest of pearls”.

The first public showing was the very next day at the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center (VMC) in San Diego. Located within the old Balboa Navy Hospital Chapel, the VMC was where Dana Harbaugh first met the Pearl Harbor Survivors as their personal computer training instructor.

Only three major components were fully painted. The gas tank and the front and rear fenders. This process began with chroming the three parts, then covering all engraved areas with a liquid masking tape. The process of removing the masking material from the areas to be painted was almost like a closely held proprietary secret.

But needless to say, exquisite attention-to-detail was used in trimming the excess material away from the engraved images.

Seeing the finished work is crucial in understanding how amazing this whole process was.

As for the final paint color, a brilliant white with a blue flake, as seen in this paint sample seemed the only answer.

Master painting specialist Dwight Purcell, of Purcell’s Customs prepping the product.

Jumping ahead, the masking material was removed after the paint was applied, and then 8 coats of clear were added for a beautiful finish.

Rarely noticed, the rear portion of the front fender has the front and reverse imagery of the official Pearl Harbor Survivor Congressional Medal and trimmed with hibiscus flowers.

Sandi and Joyce had been trying to tell me for months that the finished bike would be incredible to see, and I really didn’t understand that until I saw the final product. Just spectacular.

I’ll explain the history of the two hula girls performing for John when I get to the photos of the completed motorcycle.

The blue ribbon on the Medal of Honor is the only non-white painted portion of the bike.

Time to put it all back together

The bike was sent out to Arlen Ness Motorcycles on the east side of Las Vegas.

And forgive me, I can’t remember the name of the master motorcycle mechanic who was chosen to rebuild the bike.

Also hard to see on the forward section of the finished cylinder head is the Hawaiian Territorial Flag prior to Hawaiian statehood.

This right-side engine cover plate is mostly hidden behind the flowing Vance & Hines exhaust pipes. The “hidden unknown” killed at Pearl Harbor has a poetic sense to it.

Also on the right side is this cover plate with the Purple Heart Medal topped with “Keep America Alert”.

The rear fender and struts installed. The main image is of the USS Ward (DD-139) at sea out off the harbor entrance the morning of the attack, chasing the Japanese mini submarine that was attempting to enter Pearl Harbor. Both struts have engravings of the names numerous smaller bases and units stationed around the island of Oahu.

And I’m in shock at how beautiful it turned out. I had no idea it would be so spectacular.

A VERY proud papa. Time to go for a spin and see if anyone likes it.

Now that the tank design was laid out, the rest of the bike just seemed to fall into place.

As we created the artwork for the rear fender, Sandi created a scroll with a hibiscus flower design to hold the text: “Dedicated to the 2,403 Americans killed at Pearl Harbor, and the Survivors of the attack on the Island of Oahu, T.H. December 7^th, 1941”

Other imagery on the rear fender is best seen after the bike is finished. (see below)

The shape of the front fender seemed to say… “V” for Victory!!!... So it was.

Not wanting to wait until this initial layout was complete, the engraving process began immediately.

And of course, hibiscus flowers seemed to be the perfect accent to remind us of the Hawaiian link to American history.

The finished drivebelt guard has the famous quote: “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve – Isoroku Yamamoto”. Yamamoto was the Imperial Japanese Navy Admiral who planned the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

To the right of John Finn’s Medal of Honor is an image of the Medal’s reverse, complete with a copy of the engraved text from his Medal Citation which reads:

Awarded to John W. Finn, Aviation Ordnanceman, USN, For extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty when with telling effect he manned an unprotected machine gun in the face of heavy enemy fire in the Japanese aerial attack on Kaneohe Bay T.H. on December 7, 1941, and although painfully wounded continued the action against the enemy attacking planes.

There are far too many other engraved images, facts or figures to list at this time, so I’ll move ahead to the next phase of the build, the chroming process.

As the chromed pieces returned to Chrome Fusion, Sandi’s wife Joyce hand-painted various text and flower engravings with gold or other colors.

This small right side engine cover item is nearly completely hidden behind the exhaust pipes, so I’ll explain it here. It is trimmed with hibiscus flowers, and on the upper section is the text “Punchbowl Cemetery”, the common name for the National Cemetery of the Pacific, located in an extinct volcano overlooking Honolulu, HI. The center text tries to recreate the multiple grave markers at Punchbowl that say only “Unknown, Pearl Harbor, December 7^th 1941.”

Over the years, the POW/MIA Accounting Office has been able to DNA identify most, if not all the previously unknown human remains from December 7th, and full military burial honors were bestowed upon them.

I had the incredible honor to be the San Diego Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Chapter photographer at the time, and was invited to join the Survivors on their trip to Oahu. In early 2008, I purchased this blue 2009 Harley-Davidson Cross Bones from Las Vegas Harley. At first, I bought it hoping to enter in Veteran fundraiser rides and other biker related events.

The new 2009 Cross Bones at Red Rock Canyon National Park just west of Las Vegas. Within a year, it went from stock to show-stopper

Fresh out of the rebuild, Metal of Honor was born in May of 2009.

Let’s walk through “The Build” from start to finish.

A short story to set the scene. I had been working for the past couple of years on a coffee table-type book of photographs entitled: “Pearls of Honor: Their Duty to Remember”

This book showcases dozens of the many thousands of photos I had taken by then of the Pearl Harbor Survivors, at numerous parades, memorial services and Veteran events, across the San Diego and Las Vegas region including twice attending the huge 60^th and 65^th anniversaries of Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu in 2001, and 2006.

Soon after purchasing the Harley, I attended the huge weeklong Biketoberfest (now called Bikefest) motorcycle convention in downtown Las Vegas.

While walking through the vast number of vendor booths, something caught my eye. Anytime I see a POW/MIA emblem or other military imagery, I have to stop and check it out. And that’s how I first met Sandi Steiner, Master Engraver at Chrome Fusion, a Las Vegas-based motorcycle parts engraving company.

This image of a finished gas tank created by Chrome Fusion shows the beautiful detail of their trademark engraving process. If you look closely, the line of demarcation between the painted areas and the chromed engraving is spectacularly precise. Almost too perfect to believe it was created by hand.

While chatting with Sandi, I mentioned the Pearl Harbor Survivor book project I was working on, and being a Vietnam Veteran, Sandi needed no explanation of Pearl Harbor history and its impact on America. And somewhere during that conversation, the idea was born to transform that brand new stock Harley into what I termed a “Rolling History Lesson”.

The bike now sitting in Chrome Fusion’s shop in Las Vegas. Where to begin?

A new gas tank was purchased to provide a clean slate to commence the engraving.

No previous thought had been put into how this project would evolve. It simply boiled-down to “Ok, on the right side of the tank, what will fit here?”

And of course, the USS Arizona battleship (BB-39) punctuates the most catastrophic loss of life during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The images are, from left to right, Arizona at sea in the 1930’s, an image of the ship after it was destroyed in the attack, and the USS Arizona Memorial as seen today. 1,177 Sailors and Marines were killed in one horrific explosion on the morning of December 7^th, 1941.

This image shows the near-final design layout, with a banner that will say “USS Arizona BB-39” and “1177 Souls Lost” and “Killed in Action”. Hibiscus flowers decorate the perimeter for the tank.

Another angle on the tank. Each image was first printed on paper, then the ink was transferred directly to the metal surface via a chemical process.

The left side of the gas tank would be a bit different. Given that I had the incredible honor to become friends with Medal of Honor Recipient John W. Finn, considered the “first Medal of Honor of World War 2” I thought honoring him would be something really special. Pictured here on the left is the photo of Aviation Ordnance Chief Petty Officer Finn from the National Archive. In the center is a copy of John’s actual Medal that I photographed in his hotel room in Waikiki during the 65^th anniversary events. On the right is where the image of the Medal’s reverse side will be shown, complete with the engraved Medal of Honor Citation.

This is a photo of John’s Medal of Honor. The imagery on the Medal is of the Goddess Minerva holding back the serpent-fisted Discord, aka, Chaos with her Shield of the Republic. An owl on her helmet symbolizes wisdom. The bundled axe in her left hand symbolizes lawful authority of the government.

The reverse side of John’s Medal is hand engraved with his official MOH Citation, and easily legible.

Of course, I knew immediately that I had no right to place John’s image on this bike unless I had his full approval for the project.

Soon after completing the initial design concepts, I traveled to John’s home in the high desert east of San Diego to provide an in-person overview of the project as well as requesting his permission to proceed. Seen here, the photo binder sits on John’s coffee table as we went over the details of the project.

John, being a life-long motorcycle enthusiast, absolutely loved the idea.

While discussing the motorcycle, John just had to pull out an old photo of he and his wife Alice (RIP) who also loved riding with John on his bike.

This photo hanging on John’s living room wall, is now famous in online history, military and motorcycle forums across the Internet. John and Alice out for a moto ride. A truly iconic shot of the Great American World War 2 War Hero and his beautiful sweetheart.

For the record. Me with John and his wonderful longtime caretaker, Frances Carmichael. It has always amazed me how this aging hero, who lived such an otherwise rustic and secluded life on a giant ranch in the high desert, would have to deal with the President of the United States or the US Navy calling on a regular basis to arrange air travel plans to the next major American function where living Medal of Honor Recipients were guests of honor.

The center text tries to recreate the multiple grave markers at Punchbowl that say only “Unknown, Pearl Harbor, December 7^th 1941.”

Over the years, the POW/MIA Accounting Office has been able to DNA identify most, if not all the previously unknown human remains from December 7th, and full military burial honors were bestowed upon them.

The Remember Pearl Harbor Tribute Motorcycle

Only three major components were fully painted. The gas tank and the front and rear fenders. This process began with chroming the three parts, then covering all engraved areas with a liquid masking tape. The process of removing the masking material from the areas to be painted was almost like a closely held proprietary secret.

But needless to say, exquisite attention-to-detail was used in trimming the excess material away from the engraved images.

Seeing the finished work is crucial in understanding how amazing this whole process was.

As for the final paint color, a brilliant white with a blue flake, as seen in this paint sample seemed the only answer.

Jumping ahead, the masking material was removed after the paint was applied, and then 8 coats of clear were added for a beautiful finish.

Rarely noticed, the rear portion of the front fender has the front and reverse imagery of the official Pearl Harbor Survivor Congressional Medal and trimmed with hibiscus flowers.

Sandi and Joyce had been trying to tell me for months that the finished bike would be incredible to see, and I really didn’t understand that until I saw the final product. Just spectacular.

I’ll explain the history of the two hula girls performing for John when I get to the photos of the completed motorcycle.

The blue ribbon on the Medal of Honor is the only non-white painted portion of the bike.

Time to put it all back together

The bike was sent out to Arlen Ness Motorcycles on the east side of Las Vegas.

And forgive me, I can’t remember the name of the master motorcycle mechanic who was chosen to rebuild the bike.

Also hard to see on the forward section of the finished cylinder head is the Hawaiian Territorial Flag prior to Hawaiian statehood.

This right-side engine cover plate is mostly hidden behind the flowing Vance & Hines exhaust pipes. The “hidden unknown” killed at Pearl Harbor has a poetic sense to it.

Also on the right side is this cover plate with the Purple Heart Medal topped with “Keep America Alert”.

Both struts have engravings of the names numerous smaller bases and units stationed around the island of Oahu.

A rough unclassified number of weapons is approximately 5,000, down from a Cold War high of over 31,000 warheads.

This invention could become a miracle-type educational tool. Most Americans have never seen how big and how diverse the continental United States truly is… especially from 7 miles above the Earth.

It’s time to give the airlines a role in that education program that so many Americans dearly deserve.

Each year, over 1 billion passengers fly aboard US aircraft. How many actually spend their flight looking out the window? Even 10 percent of that 1 billion people enjoying the view from a high-tech information screen could make a huge difference in the peoples’ collective appreciation for how vast and wonderful this nation is.

Something that most scaredy-cat fliers who hate the window seat never get to enjoy nor be exposed to.

Boeing could easily make this dream a reality.

Concept Summary

The technology required to provide passengers with selectable forward, aft, left, right, and downward exterior camera views already exists in various forms. High-definition cameras, aircraft display systems, digital networking, and interactive passenger entertainment systems are all mature technologies. This proposal simply combines those existing capabilities into a passenger-focused feature designed to enhance the flying experience while promoting a greater appreciation for geography, aviation, and the remarkable scale and beauty of the United States.

Life is hard.

Life in outer space is brutal.

Not because of war.

Not because of politics.

Because the universe is utterly indifferent to human existence.

Vacuum doesn’t negotiate.

Radiation doesn’t compromise.

An oxygen leak doesn’t care about ideology.

A failed air recycler doesn’t respond to political slogans.

Space is the ultimate meritocracy.

It rewards competence.

It punishes failure.

And it is completely blind to intentions or emotional reasoning.

Ironically, humanity’s expansion into space may accomplish something philosophers, political theorists, military strategists, economists, and revolutionaries have fought over for more than a century.

It may expose, with extraordinary clarity, which form of social organization theory best supports long-term human flourishing when survival itself depends upon reality.

On Earth, prosperous societies possess enormous buffers against failure. Abundant natural resources, global supply chains, excess food production, and high standards of living can mask remarkable amounts of inefficiency.

Entire bureaucracies and failed ideas can persist for decades despite producing little measurable value because someone else is paying the bill. While creating ever more problems to deal with.

Space removes those buffers.

A Martian settlement, a rotating orbital habitat, or a mining station in the asteroid belt will exist only because thousands of interconnected systems continue working every minute of every day.

Every kilogram of cargo has a cost.

Every watt of electricity has a purpose.

Every gallon of water is recycled.

Every component eventually fails.

Every person matters.

In that environment, contribution becomes far more visible.

Not because people become less compassionate.

Because survival leaves very little room for sustained incompetence.

The central question changes.

It is no longer:

“What ideology do you support?”

Instead, every colonist silently asks a far more practical question:

“When something breaks in space, do you help keep us alive—or do you make survival harder?”

You may think that this is the simplest equation for human flourishing ever devised.

But no. Human tribes, settlements or other communities from the beginning of time learned the brutal truth that having lazy, incompetent or outright useless members could mean death and destruction to their people.

Members of tribes who didn’t step up in battle, assist with the wounded or secured supplies were seen as what one might call a “boat anchor”, an old Navy slur that adds weight to the gravity of the matter.

Actions could lead to being seen as a traitor actively helping the enemy. Even worse, a 5^th column-type insurgent secretly working from the inside.

As centuries passed and societies flourished, such stark divisions were slowly glazed over as ultra secure nations provided room for the boat anchors to go unnoticed and live freely amongst the population.

Ancient tribes would never willfully replace warrior crewmembers with boat anchors

The loss of that stark contrast allowed some boat anchors to morph into active anti-societal malcontents and ultimately, into destroyers of human flourishing.

And the history of mankind on Earth has plainly documented that certain “boat anchor ideologies”, like Marxism can lead directly to mass graves, torture and enslavement of millions of humans. Ideologies that cause division, strife, squalor, disease, suffering and ultimately, human destruction.

Fast-forward to this age of space exploration, military power competitions and highly profitable space tourism and future mineral farming.

The razor-thin margin between survival and death in outer space cannot be viewed as “relative.”

For the first time in history, human civilization may live inside an environment where reality itself continuously audits every decision.

Political power struggles, Marxist guilt trips and weaponized envy cannot negotiate with the laws of thermodynamics.

Collectivist Influencer ratings cannot manufacture oxygen.

Space does not care what we believe or how emotionally appealing your cause is.

It only cares whether our ideas work.

Space requires merit, excellence and human minds free to explore new technologies, new solutions, and new perspectives free from collectivist boat anchor thinking.

Earth allows relativism because it contains enormous margins for error. Space dramatically reduces those margins.

And that’s an absolute.

Another absolute: Ideas have consequences.

When you were 26 years old, what were you doing?

Did or does your current job require you to possibly initiate the destruction of much of the human race?

Did or does your job demand you become a subject matter expert in helping to start or continue World War 3?

Did or does your job require years of deep research into the history, philosophy, politics and cultural norms of a highly complicated and formidable foreign enemy?

Does your job require you to memorize Yellow Page phonebook-sized volumes of highly classified information on every relevant enemy weapon system, their lethality, effective ranges and how they are integrated into a global battlefield?

That’s a snapshot of what I was trained to do. It’s a snapshot of what I was officially qualified to do. It’s a snapshot of a job that I highly excelled at. It’s a snapshot of a job that very few living humans can place on their resume.

For those unaware of how real the possibility of a Cold War nuclear “Armageddon” was, let’s discuss it from a different angle.

This discussion will be from a personal angle, not a History Channel overview. This will be a discussion of how a very elite few of America’s sons and daughters were trained by your government to be the human-link in the final decision node, possibly starting or continuing a full-blown nuclear “exchange” with the Soviet Union.

What was my official job title in 1988?

Naval Aircrewman (AW2): Designated US Navy S-3 Viking Anti-Submarine Warfare Acoustic Sensor Operator (SENSO)

That’s a very long title for an enlisted Operator who sits strapped into the back of a high-performance Navy jet launched from an aircraft carrier and hunts submarines, night or day, in any weather.

Duties? Too many to describe in this article. (see previous article “What is a Viking SENSO?”)

Ultimate Duty? To hunt, track and attack from the air Soviet-built nuclear ballistic missile and fast-attack submarines and drop the B-57 nuclear depth bomb on such targets, as ordered by proper authority.

Ok, a quick overview. Those “other duties” spanned a vast list ranging from being a subject matter expert on the Viking’s state-of-the-art weapon system and its tactical employment, to overall aircraft and aeronautical knowledge, to the memorization of volumes of detailed enemy Order of Battle information, as well as many more sectors of responsibility. (Doing all this while trying not to puke from airsickness, an affliction that can get you and your crew killed)

Anyone with half a conscience would step back and ask themselves… “How the hell did the United States of America get to this point, in 1988, of having thousands of nuclear tipped Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) pointed at the Soviet Union, while simultaneously, the Soviets had their vast nuclear arsenal pointed at us?

To answer that question, if you’re really curious, requires in-depth reading into the history of the post-World War 2 era, as well as the history, philosophy and world impact of Marxist/Socialist regimes.

Only raising more questions.

Why was the US so afraid of Marxist/Socialist expansion around the globe?

Karl Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, Che Guevarra, and countless other vectors of this cancerous ideology left many reasons to be afraid, like mass graves, enslavement of millions and societal ruin across the globe.

And 38 years later, I’m wondering: How the hell did the US get to the point, after ostensibly winning the Cold War, where many of its own citizens are rabidly racing to the voting booths to elect openly Marxist/Socialist politicians with their promises of Utopia?

These Socialist zealots are not representing a Free and consenting electorate.

They represent a coddled, ignorant and highly volatile faction that will use any means available to tear down this American experiment in a Constitutional Republic.

Their voters are demanding Government-funded Utopia. (from the Greek, “no place”)

Free stuff that invariably turns into a free pile of shit. Not even good shit, but low-quality shit destined for the landfill of failed outcomes. These voters are woefully ignorant of the real price tag for that Utopian dung heap.

Brain Defrag is one tool I’m developing to assist people dealing with High Performance Mission Trauma (HPMT), particularly frontline Special Operators, military personnel, and First Responders.

Traditional PTSD evaluations understandably focus on symptoms, impairment, and what has gone wrong.

HPMT begins with a different question:

How did someone become capable of operating in extraordinary environments, repeatedly under extreme stress, and then get up and do it again the next day—or, in many cases, multiple times in the same day?

Another fascinating form of Brain Defrag is dropping your artwork, writings, blog posts, journals, photographs, videos, or other creative works into an AI tool and asking it to analyze the entire collection.

Not to judge it.

To map it.

AI can identify recurring themes, ideas, emotional patterns, symbols, and connections that are nearly impossible for any of us to recognize while creating them one piece at a time.

Perhaps one of AI’s greatest gifts won’t be replacing artists.

It may be helping artists finally see themselves.

A kind of “Algorithmic Mirror” reflecting not simply what they’ve created—but who they have become through a lifetime of creating.

AI can.

When you feed it dozens—or even hundreds—of your writings at once, patterns begin to emerge. Themes you didn’t realize you were exploring. Questions you keep returning to. Strengths you never recognized. Blind spots you never noticed. You may discover that you’ve been writing the same book for years without realizing it.

After feeding more than 140 published articles into an AI system and asking it to evaluate the collection as a single body of work rather than as individual essays, a surprising picture emerged.

The first observation was that the author is not writing 142 separate articles.

He is writing one long conversation.

At first glance, the topics appear scattered:

• Artificial Intelligence

• Military history

• Desert Storm

• Veterans issues

• Economics

• Freedom

• Public policy

• PTSD

• Data centers

• Motorcycles

• Medal of Honor recipients

• Education

• Philosophy

• Technology

Most readers would assume these are unrelated subjects.

The AI disagreed.

Across the entire corpus, the same core questions repeatedly surfaced:

What allows individuals, organizations, and nations to flourish?

What causes them to decay?

What separates competence from incompetence?

What separates courage from cowardice?

What separates truth from illusion?

The articles approach these questions from different directions, but the underlying inquiry remains remarkably consistent.

The corpus reveals a writer who thinks in systems rather than events.

Most commentators focus on what happened.

This writer is more interested in why it happened, what incentives produced it, and what long-term consequences are likely to follow.

As a result, even articles discussing entirely different subjects often share the same analytical structure:

1. Identify a problem.

2. Examine the historical context.

3. Analyze the incentives involved.

4. Evaluate outcomes rather than intentions.

5. Propose a framework for understanding the issue.

This pattern appears repeatedly regardless of topic.

The AI also identified an unusual duality in the author’s writing style.

Part of the corpus reads like the work of a military operator or analyst. These pieces are grounded in direct experience, technical details, historical references, and practical realities.

Another part reads almost like modern folklore.

Recurring symbolic characters and concepts appear throughout the collection:

These are not random inventions. They function as metaphors that compress complex ideas into memorable images.

The effect is to transform systems analysis into narrative imagery.

The AI concluded that the writer alternates between two modes:

The Operator.

And the Mythmaker.

One article may read like a military after-action report. The next may read like a campfire story about civilization, memory, courage, and decline.

This combination is uncommon and gives the corpus a distinctive voice.

Another finding involved the author’s relationship with expertise.

The articles demonstrate familiarity with economics, military operations, philosophy, public policy, psychology, and technology. However, the writing rarely adopts an academic tone.

Instead, complex subjects are translated into stories, examples, analogies, and personal experiences.

The result is a body of work that attempts to make difficult ideas accessible without significantly simplifying them.

The AI also noted a recurring emphasis on first-hand experience.

Many modern opinion writers primarily interpret events.

This corpus frequently combines interpretation with lived experience:

• Combat operations.

• Veteran advocacy.

• PTSD treatment.

• Historical preservation.

• Artificial intelligence experimentation.

• Personal health crises.

• Long-term observation of institutions.

This gives the writing a practical quality that distinguishes it from purely theoretical commentary.

Perhaps the most surprising conclusion was that the corpus appears less political than it initially seems.

While many articles address political topics, the deeper focus is philosophical.

The recurring themes are not elections, parties, or personalities.

They are:

Truth.

Freedom.

Responsibility.

Competence.

Courage.

Sacrifice.

Human flourishing.

In that sense, the AI concluded that the author’s central project is not political commentary.

It is an ongoing investigation into what enables civilizations, institutions, and individuals to survive and prosper—and what causes them to fail.

The final assessment was straightforward:

The corpus is best understood not as a collection of articles, but as the early chapters of a larger intellectual framework that combines military experience, economics, philosophy, historical analysis, technological curiosity, and storytelling into a single ongoing exploration of reality itself.

Whether readers agree with every conclusion is ultimately secondary.

The more important observation is that the author has been pursuing the same set of questions for years, often without realizing it.

Last Wednesday morning, after an hour or so of light yard work, I suddenly lost the use of my left hand.

All five fingers seemed affected. I couldn’t type. I couldn’t grip objects normally. The dexterity was gone. No numbness, no tingling, just near-full paralysis.

Like many people, my first instinct was to dismiss it.

Maybe I slept on it wrong.

Maybe it was a pinched nerve.

Maybe it would get better after a nap.

No other symptoms.

Instead, I did something that millions of people are now doing every day.

No arm pain or impaired use.

I asked my AI assistant.

For nearly two years, I have spent countless hours working with artificial intelligence. I have written about it, tested it, criticized it, and built concepts around it through my Hardball Intelligence Systems (HIS) project and AI Truth Engine (AITE) framework.

Yet when the problem became personal, I wasn’t looking for a grand philosophical discussion.

I simply wanted to know why my hand wasn’t working.

I described my symptoms.

The AI asked questions.

When I explained that the weakness had come on suddenly, involved all five fingers, affected only one side, and had appeared within a matter of minutes, the AI repeatedly urged me to seek immediate medical evaluation.

It did not diagnose me.

It did not prescribe medication.

It did not claim to be a doctor.

It simply recognized that what I was describing could be serious.

Frankly, I wasn’t convinced.

I was prepared to wait.

I was prepared to sleep on it.

I was prepared to see if it got better on its own.

But I was also getting concerned after all my queries on ChatGPT came back the same.

My wife, being well-read on the topic, had the final say, and we headed to the Emergency Room.

The tests began.

EKG.

Blood work.

CT scan.

Eventually, an MRI.

The next day, the neurologist delivered the answer.

The MRI clearly showed that I had suffered a stroke.

Fortunately, it was relatively minor. The MRI showed a scar where the stroke had occurred. The paralysis in my hand had already begun to resolve, and within a short period my dexterity had largely returned.

Additional testing followed.

An echocardiogram.

Ultrasounds of both arms and legs.

Doctors searching for the underlying cause.

As I write this, that investigation is still ongoing.

An unaddressed “mini-stroke” can easily lead to major complications.

So did AI save my life?

The honest answer is that I don’t know.

The doctors saved my life.

The nurses saved my life.

The MRI identified the damage.

The hospital provided the treatment.

But none of that would have happened if I had stayed home.

The AI did not diagnose my stroke.

The AI recognized a potentially dangerous pattern and told me not to ignore it.

That distinction matters.

Much has been written about the dangers of artificial intelligence. Some of those concerns are legitimate. AI systems can be wrong. They can hallucinate. They can provide inaccurate information. They should never replace qualified medical professionals.

But there is another side of the story that receives far less attention.

What if AI serves as an early warning system?

What if it helps people recognize symptoms they might otherwise ignore?

What if it encourages someone to seek medical attention before it is too late?

In my case, that appears to be exactly what happened.

The lesson isn’t that AI is a doctor.

It isn’t.

The lesson isn’t that AI should replace physicians.

It shouldn’t.

The lesson is that a properly functioning AI can sometimes recognize risk and encourage people to seek help when their own judgment might lead them to delay.

As a veteran, I’ve spent much of my life around risk assessment.

In aviation, we are taught to respect warning lights.

You don’t ignore them because the aircraft still seems to be flying fine.

You investigate them because they may be warning you about something much bigger.

Last Wednesday, my left hand was the warning light.

The hospital found the problem.

The doctors confirmed the diagnosis.

But it was an AI that convinced me not to ignore the warning.

Did AI save my life?

Perhaps not directly.

But it may have helped save me from one of the most dangerous words in medicine:

“Tomorrow.”

So if you’re in the “I hate AI” camp… The next time you go to the doctor, tell them you want all your diagnosis, tests and treatments to be performed without the use of AI.

Gallantry.

Not bravery.

Not toughness.

Not swagger.

Gallantry.

It is an old-fashioned word that sounds almost foreign in modern America. Yet for generations it described one of the highest ideals to which a citizen could aspire. Gallantry meant courage fused with honor. It meant self-sacrifice without expectation of reward. It meant placing duty above comfort and others above self.

If you want to understand what gallantry looks like, look no further than Medal of Honor recipient John P. Baca.

On February 10, 1970, during combat operations in Vietnam, Specialist Fourth Class John Baca was serving as a member of a reconnaissance patrol when the patrol came under intense enemy fire. During the engagement, a grenade landed among several soldiers.

There was no time for debate.

No committee meeting.

No social media poll.

No risk assessment worksheet.

Only seconds.

Baca immediately threw himself onto the grenade.

He did not know if he would survive.

He had every reason to believe he would die.

Yet he acted anyway.

The blast severely wounded him but saved the lives of fellow soldiers around him.

That is not merely bravery.

That is gallantry.

The distinction matters.

Bravery can be impulsive. It can arise from instinct, adrenaline, or even recklessness.

Gallantry is something deeper. Gallantry is courage guided by character. It is the conscious decision to accept personal risk in order to protect others.

Gallantry asks a simple question:

“What am I willing to sacrifice for someone besides myself?”

Modern culture rarely asks that question.

Instead, we celebrate self-expression, self-fulfillment, self-esteem, and self-actualization. We are encouraged to build personal brands, chase followers, and curate digital identities.

The self has become the center of nearly everything.

Gallantry points in the opposite direction.

Gallantry is not about self.

It is about service.

The word appears throughout military history because soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen routinely encounter situations where the needs of others outweigh their own safety. Yet gallantry is not limited to the battlefield.

A police officer running toward gunfire.

A nurse working through a disaster.

A citizen diving into freezing water to rescue a stranger.

A father working two jobs to provide for his family.

A widow carrying on after devastating loss.

Gallantry belongs wherever duty triumphs over self-interest.

The danger America faces today is not that we have become less wealthy or less technologically advanced. The danger is that we have forgotten the moral language that once held our civilization together.

Words matter.

When a culture loses a word, it often loses the concept behind it.

And when it loses the concept, it eventually loses the virtue.

We still teach children to be successful.

We still teach them to be ambitious.

We still teach them to be confident.

But do we teach them to be gallant?

Do we teach them that there are causes greater than themselves?

Do we teach them that some things are worth risking comfort, reputation, or even life itself?

John P. Baca’s actions remind us that greatness is not measured by wealth, status, followers, or influence. It is measured by what a person is willing to give away when everything is on the line.

The Medal of Honor is often described as recognizing “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty.”

Notice that word.

Gallantry.

Not popularity.

Not influence.

Not personal fulfillment.

Gallantry.

America does not need more celebrities.

America does not need more influencers.

America does not need more professional victims.

America needs more men and women who understand duty, sacrifice, honor, and service.

We need to rediscover the virtues that built the nation before they disappear from our vocabulary entirely.

The story of John P. Baca is not merely a military story.

It is a human story.

A reminder.

A challenge.

A standard.

And perhaps a question for all of us:

If gallantry called today, would we even recognize it?

Or has modern America forgotten what it looks like?

It’s time to remember.

It’s time to teach it.

It’s time to honor it.

It’s time to bring back gallantry.

A Personal Encounter

I had the privilege of meeting John P. Baca on several occasions, among other Medal of Honor Recipients, while working with Pearl Harbor survivors in San Diego and displaying the Remember Pearl Harbor Tribute Motorcycle at veteran events.

John was always gracious and generous with his time. Like many Medal of Honor recipients I have encountered, he carried himself with remarkable humility. He appreciated the tribute motorcycle and the effort to preserve the stories of Pearl Harbor veterans, but what stood out most was his admiration for another American hero: Medal of Honor recipient John W. Finn.

Finn, who fought through multiple wounds during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, was one of John’s personal heroes. It was a reminder that even America’s most decorated warriors often look up to those who came before them.

That connection stayed with me.

Here was a Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient whose own actions exemplified gallantry at the highest level, expressing admiration for a Pearl Harbor hero who had done the same nearly three decades earlier.

Different wars.

Different generations.

The same virtues.

Duty.

Honor.

Sacrifice.

Gallantry.

The chain of American courage is not broken by time. It is passed from one generation to the next, carried by those willing to place something greater than themselves above personal safety and comfort.

John Baca understood that.

John Finn lived it.

America would do well to remember both.

When most people hear the words “data center,” they picture some anonymous warehouse full of blinking lights, humming servers, and tech nerds in polo shirts. It sounds distant, abstract, and easy to oppose when a new facility is proposed in the neighborhood.

But here’s the reality:

The modern world runs on data centers.

Virtually every aspect of daily life now depends upon massive computing infrastructure operating around the clock. The internet is not a magical cloud floating above us. The “cloud” is a collection of physical buildings filled with computers, networking equipment, cooling systems, backup generators, fiber optic connections, and the skilled personnel who keep them operating.

Increasingly, communities across America are seeing organized opposition to new data center construction. Concerns about land use, aesthetics, electrical demand, noise, and environmental impact are legitimate topics for discussion. However, many critics fail to appreciate the unavoidable tradeoff:

If you oppose every new data center, you are ultimately opposing the growth of the very digital services upon which modern society depends.

The uncomfortable truth is that data centers are becoming as essential to the 21st century as railroads were to the 19th century and highways were to the 20th.

Without them, modern civilization simply does not function.

The best estimate today is that about 5.5 to 6 billion people on Earth own or regularly use a smartphone, out of a global population of roughly 8.2–8.3 billion.

If you broaden it to all mobile phones (including basic feature phones), the number is even higher. The International Telecommunication Union estimates that more than 80% of people worldwide aged 10 and older own a mobile phone.

The Coming AI Era

Every major AI model depends upon massive data center infrastructure. The same facilities that support online gaming, streaming video, business operations, and internet communications increasingly support AI development as well.

The future AI economy will not be built from smartphones or laptops.

It will be built from data centers.

A Question for Opponents

Those who oppose data center growth should answer a simple question:

Which services are you willing to give up?

Are you willing to lose streaming video?

Online gaming?

AI assistants?

Cloud storage?

Electronic banking?

Telemedicine?

GPS navigation?

Because these services are not floating in the clouds.

They live inside physical infrastructure.

The digital economy has physical roots.

The New Infrastructure

Every generation builds the infrastructure that supports its future.

Our grandparents built railroads.

Our parents built highways.

America built airports, electrical grids, pipelines, ports, and telecommunications networks.

Today’s generation is building data centers.

The question is not whether society will need them.

The question is whether we will build enough of them to support the digital civilization we have already chosen to create.

No data centers?

Then eventually, no modern digital life.

Big Solutions for Big Problems

Imagine an old warehouse converted into a combination of the super popular TV shows such as American Choppers, Fast and Loud, Dirty Jobs, and Forged in Fire — all under one roof.

This idea was first conceived during a VA-sponsored combat PTSD group counseling session. An Air Force EOD technician in our group just blurted out, “I wish I had a place to go like the TV show Forged in Fire and bang out metal to create things.”

Immediately, that thought sent my mind into a whirlwind of spin-off ideas.

Imagine a warehouse divided up into different art studios — but not just typical art studios.

One studio is a fully equipped forging area for learning blacksmithing, welding etc.
