Not my English. A different one entirely — where meetings have kick-offs, projects need buy-in, teams need alignment, and everyone’s invited to an afterwork before heading home for some hygge.

I arrived expecting to wrestle with Danish grammar. Instead, I found myself trapped in a linguistic exchange programme nobody had told me about.

Denmark has a slightly complicated relationship with all of this. On Monday, someone announces a new strategy at a kick-off meeting. On Tuesday, everyone attends a workshop about alignment. On Wednesday, someone raises a serious concern about the number of English words creeping into Danish society.

It’s one of Denmark’s quieter talents: importing English vocabulary, then holding a perfectly serious conversation about whether importing English vocabulary is a good idea.

I remember sitting in a meeting where six Danes spoke Danish for half an hour. I understood almost nothing.

And yet somehow, I understood the important words.

Kick-off. Feedback. Alignment. Buy-in. Mindset.

That’s when I realised Denmark hadn’t borrowed English.

It had Danishified it.

A workshop can apparently solve almost anything.

Need to improve communication? Workshop.

Need a new strategy? Workshop.

Need to understand why the previous strategy didn’t work? Probably another workshop.

You need alignment before you can move forward. You need buy-in before you can get alignment. And you need a kick-off before you can get buy-in.

The vocabulary came from English.

The system is unmistakably Danish.

Other words survive the crossing but arrive slightly rearranged.

Take “random.”

In English, it suggests something happening without a particular pattern or reason. In Danish, random often seems to have acquired a slightly different job. It can mean unexpected, strange, or simply a little out of place.

A missed bus is random.

A strange haircut is random.

Someone you haven’t seen in years suddenly turning up somewhere is random.

Basically, if nobody saw it coming, it can be random.

Probability was never consulted.

Then there’s “stress,” which might be the best contradiction of the lot.

Denmark exports work-life balance like a national brand. Six-week holidays. Leaving at four.

And yet somehow, everyone is still stressed.

Jeg er stresset.

It didn’t even need Danishifying.

Some Danish words don’t survive the trip into English either.

Pyt.

Samfundssind.

You can translate them if you try hard enough. But you lose the shrug in pyt, the quiet sense of civic responsibility in samfundssind, somewhere along the way.

Maybe that’s what happens when languages live next to each other long enough.

They borrow.

They reshape.

They misunderstand each other slightly.

And somehow still communicate perfectly well.

Which brings me to a sentence I hear more often than I’d like to admit:

“Let’s have a quick workshop to get some alignment around that.”

I understood every word.

I’m just not sure any of them still belong to me.

I’ll be back in two weeks with eight small tests for anyone still trying to become ‘Foreigner of the Year’. You might want to start practising your week numbers.

Expect to make plans at least four weeks in advance. My diary is already half filled with plans months ahead.

Danes adore their calendars, and week numbers are revered.

Try not to be spontaneous. The word exists in Danish, spontan, but it’s rarely used, and even more rarely acted on.

That is until the sun comes out, and then something breaks. The calendar gets abandoned. Plans get dropped. Everyone just goes outside.

I discovered this properly on a Wednesday. One o’clock. A workday. Nothing special about the date. Except the temperature had hit a balmy 28 degrees, so I decided to swing by my local outdoor swimming spot for a dip.

Guess what? It was packed.

Not busy. Packed.

Midweek, supposedly the least spontaneous hour on the least spontaneous day, and half of Copenhagen had apparently had the same idea.

With no warning.
No plan.
No calendar invite.

This is the part nobody tells you before you move here.

Danes are not spontaneous people. They are extremely reliable people who have found one loophole in their own operating system, and that loophole is called a hot summer’s day.

The rest of the year runs on structure. Plans get made properly, in advance, with the seriousness of a small treaty.

And a word of advice - never ever turn up unannounced. It’s like asking someone to rearrange a life that was working perfectly well without you.

But give a Dane a proper summer’s day, and the entire system quietly shuts down.

Nobody sends a calendar invite for that.

They just leave. Early afternoon. Mid-week. And somehow turn up at the same pool as everyone else who had exactly the same idea.

It took me years to understand that this wasn’t a contradiction.

It was a hierarchy.

Planning is how Danes show they respect your time.

But a hot, glorious summer is rare enough - for now - in Denmark to outrank even that.

The sun doesn’t make Danes spontaneous.

Eight months of darkness will do that to any sane person.

Experts say language learning helps fend off cognitive decline. A compelling reason, you would think, to tackle this flat as a potato pancake language.

So what have I missed by not speaking Danish?

Quite a lot. I am not part of the national discourse on crucial issues like whether combining durum wheat with sourdough truly makes a superior bread, or whether Danes really do criticise their government and politicians, something we Brits have turned into an art form.

Perhaps it is time to try. To get to know the Danes beyond nodding along and pretending to understand everything they are saying.

A colleague once told me that Copenhageners from different neighbourhoods can sound like one is reciting Old Norse while the other is reading a Bang and Olufsen manual. That did not help.

Maybe it is easier to hover on the sidelines and be an observer like in the Kamelåså sketch, rather than to step in and risk butchering not just the language, but the idea of belonging.

In 2003, a Norwegian comedian walked into a hardware store sketch and invented a nonsense word, kamelåså, deliberately making it sound Danish. The clerk, too proud to admit he had no idea what was being asked for, just played along. The joke being that Danish is so impenetrable even Danes can’t keep up.

Here is the twist.

According to the American Foreign Service Institute, Danish is a Category 1 language. In theory, it should take around 600 classroom hours to learn, the same level as French or Spanish, languages people pick up casually.

Meanwhile, Arabic or Mandarin demand 2200 hours. So, Danish should be easy peasy. Just not for me.

And the immediate benefits? Understanding what the state is actually telling me. Following everyday conversations. Feeling, perhaps, a little less like an outsider.

Probably though after all that effort, Danes will still instinctively reply in English.

Sometimes in life, you just cannot win.

Still, 600 hours. That is 50 hours a month. 12.5 a week. Approx. 2 hours a day.

So over the next 12 months, what could possibly go wrong?

Let’s hope, for those working in hospitality, that the tourists are Americans. They’re the only ones guaranteed to leave a tip and are generally the friendliest bunch.

I come from a tipping culture.

Britain isn’t quite America. We don’t tip the baker or the person who hands us a coffee. But the instinct is there. Sit down, eat something, leave something.

It’s built into our manners.

So when I arrived in Copenhagen, I kept tipping. Not extravagantly. Just the usual ten percent. A small gesture of appreciation.

Nobody told me I was confusing the Danes.

The first clue should have been the expressions. Not grateful. Not dismissive. Just puzzled. Like I’d handed them a voucher for a shop that no longer existed.

Here’s what I eventually understood: Danish service staff are generally paid properly. A real wage. Pension. Holiday pay. The system actually works. Tipping isn’t built in because it doesn’t need to be.

In Britain and America, tipping isn’t generosity.

It’s a subsidy.

A way of helping someone earn a living wage.

Everyone has quietly agreed to pretend it’s a charming way to do business.

Denmark never signed up to that arrangement.

So when you leave a tip here, you’re importing a model Denmark never needed.

A creeping Americanisation is happening here. With one in four Copenhagen residents being international, service is increasingly provided in English, and many of the trendier places have card machines with a tip prompt built in.

Three suggested percentages appear before you’ve frantically located the “No Thanks” button. With the server standing there watching, the pressure alone is often enough to make me tip.

Whoever designed that checkout screen understood human nature rather well. It’s difficult not to feel slightly bullied by it.

The thing I admire about Denmark’s no-tipping culture, once you stop panicking about it, is what it reveals underneath.

It says: we pay people what they’re worth.

No performance required.

No anxiety about whether you smiled enough.

You do your job.

You get paid for your job.

Like most Danish systems, it works brilliantly.

Right up until it doesn’t.

Denmark has no statutory minimum wage. Pay is largely determined through collective agreements, which means employers outside those agreements can pay far less.

I once lasted two days in a job before realising the employer was less interested in Danish values than Danish loopholes.

That isn’t Danish exceptionalism.

It’s just exploitation with a Scandinavian postcode.

But old habits are hard to shake. Even today, I’m a sucker for a good smile, so I still tip for food.

Not for drinks.

Some instincts don’t come with a “No Thanks” button.

We were cruising along when I saw it.

Din fart

In enormous, unapologetic letters. My inner twelve-year-old could not stop giggling.

Before I had even processed that, another sign appeared.

SLUT

Was the universe trying to tell me something about my past?

Some words clearly do not travel well.

We pulled into a petrol station.

And there it was. A cheerful little box of liquorice proudly labelled Spunk.

Now, where I come from, Spunk is not something you casually request at the till.

Yet there I was, gamely asking the cashier: “Do these Spunk boxes come in different flavours?”

He shook his head. Scanned. Said nothing. No smile.

Danish service can often be wonderfully understated.

In Britain, if our road signs said Fart, the entire country would collapse into irony within hours. There would be mugs and T-shirts. Possibly even a novelty pop song.

In Denmark? It is Tuesday.

No one sniggers. The Danes, of course, are utterly unfazed. There is something deeply Danish about this calm approach.

If they do not react, the foreigner will at some point figure it out.

And they are right.

One of the strange milestones of learning Danish is the day these words stop being funny.

At first, every journey feels like a carry-on comedy show.

Then, gradually, your brain rewires itself.

Eventually, Din fart becomes your speed.

Fartkontrol becomes speed control.

Even I fart starts to make perfect sense in a lift.

Somewhere along the way, you realise you have become slightly Danish.

Yes. There is a fart theme.

But don't get me started on Slutspurt, Skat and Slags.

Three perfectly innocent Danish words that sound like they belong in an entirely different conversation.

The joke was not on Denmark.

It was on me.

Typical Brit.

Arriving in another country.

Assuming the universe runs on English.

SLUT.

I also had no idea about unions, a-kasse, or that my payslips were quietly waiting for me in something called e-Boks.

Those were the happy days. The blissfully ignorant days.

Then a colleague showed me where to find my tax information. And there it was — quietly helping itself to my salary every month. Around 0.65% of my taxable income, to be precise.

I knew about income tax and Moms. I had eventually discovered a-kasse. But kirkeskat had apparently been aware of me long before I was aware of it.

Not sure if you are paying it?

Denmark almost certainly knows. Whether you do is another matter.

Denmark runs on quiet assumptions. It doesn't explain things. It assumes you've read the information, even when the information is in a language you barely understand.

Or, more accurately, it assumes you have read the form, understood the form, and remembered the form six years later.

What surprised me was not that Denmark had a church tax. What surprised me was who was paying it.

Around 70% of Denmark’s population are members of Folkekirken, yet regular church attendance is low.

The Danes are, in other words, funding a church they largely do not attend — and they seem perfectly relaxed about that.

The average Dane’s relationship with the church resembles a gym membership. They rarely visit, occasionally feel they probably should, continue paying for years, and fully expect it to be there when they suddenly need it.

A Danish child is often christened. A Danish teenager is often confirmed. A Danish couple may still marry in church. A Danish grandparent receives a church funeral.

So the institution remains quietly present in Danish life.

It is a very Danish paradox: mostly secular people passively funding one of the best-preserved Lutheran institutions in the world, treating it less as belief than as infrastructure.

In Britain, churches are often either struggling to stay open or converted into cafés, flats, or community centres. In Denmark, every church looks like it was painted last Tuesday. It never occurred to me to ask why.

Then it clicks: if most Danes aren’t especially religious, someone is still paying to keep all of this standing. And that someone turns out to be the majority.

Want out? You can leave at any time.

In the old days you would pop into your local parish church and fill in a form. No exit interview. No guilt trip. Now it’s all digital.

And if you do leave, a church wedding and a church funeral conducted by a Folkekirken pastor are no longer guaranteed.

Eternity is a long time to regret a form you didn’t read in Danish.

So how are those Danish lessons coming along?

At some point you start noticing the elephants.

Not in the wild (obviously), or at Copenhagen Zoo, but in places they have no obvious reason to be. I only realised this after a friend gave me a tour of the city.

You don’t see them at first. Then you see them everywhere.

Inside Rosenborg Castle. On the ceiling of Christiansborg Palace. At the Carlsberg brewery gate.

And then you start wondering why they are there at all.

Medieval symbolism is the official answer. It never quite satisfied me.

The elephant represented purity, strength, and Christian virtue, which is slightly difficult to reconcile with four granite elephants guarding a brewery gate in Copenhagen.

So I kept digging.

The Order of the Elephant is Denmark’s highest royal honour, and one of its oldest, dating back to the 1400s. It is awarded almost exclusively to royalty and heads of state.

Barack Obama has one. So did Winston Churchill, Dwight Eisenhower, Nelson Mandela, and Niels Bohr.

You arrive. You smile. You leave with an elephant.

There are exceptions.

Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller received his in recognition of the company placing its fleet at the disposal of the Allied forces during the Second World War. They asked for nothing in return.

Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu received one in 1980. It was revoked in 1989, two days before his execution. The only recipient ever to have had it taken back.

There is also a colonial footnote.

The elephant carrying a tower on its back comes from the howdah, a carriage used in the Indian subcontinent. To medieval Europeans, this made the animal a living fortress. The Danes encountered the symbol during their colonial presence in India and eventually made it their own.

The elephant is foreign. The rider is foreign. The castle is Danish. Yet here we are and I am still slightly baffled.

Then there is Carlsberg.

In 1901, Carl Jacobsen commissioned four granite elephants to support the brewery gate. This had nothing to do with the royal order. He chose them as symbols of strength, loyalty, and stability.

The models were created by Nilaus Fristrup, who is said to have never seen a real elephant in his life, which explains why the statues look like neither Indian nor African elephants, but something closer to a children's fairy tale.

Carlsberg took it further.

In 1959, they brewed Carlsberg Elephant, a strong 7.2% lager that is still in production today.

Fruity. Golden. Slightly more demanding than a regular Carlsberg.

Named after the gate. Sold around the world. The elephant had officially become a brand.

And it shows up in other places too.

Bodil, the toy elephant in the beloved old Far til Fire films, is one of the most recognisable characters in Danish cinema. Not a real elephant. A stuffed one carried by a child. But the Danes gave her a name, made her a star, and put her in a franchise that ran for decades. Even their fictional elephants stick around.

The language has absorbed them too.

If you blunder through a social situation, you’ve been en elefant i en glasbutik. An elephant in a glass shop.

If you catastrophise a minor inconvenience, you’ve made en myg til en elefant. A mosquito into an elephant.

The Danes reach for this animal whenever they need to describe something large. Clumsy. Slightly out of place.

As a foreigner here, I have always wondered how an elephant found its way to the top table.

For a country that prides itself on being distinctly Danish, choosing an animal from another continent as its highest symbol of honour is impressive.

The most exotic animal I have encountered here is an irritated swan, so this giant beast from the East has done remarkably well for itself.

There may be hope for me yet.

Nobody told me it was not a person. Nobody told me it was pronounced goose. And nobody, absolutely nobody, told me what was about to happen inside that wooden sweat box.

The Scandinavians love their saunas. Everyone knows that. But the Danes have taken the concept and added ceremony, theatre, and a designated person whose entire job is to wave a towel at you with the focused intensity of someone conducting a symphony.

That person is the sauna master, arriving with his little bag of oils like a dealer who knows exactly what you need before you do.

The towel waving is the aufguss (owf-goose). The aromatherapy-scented steam hits you like a warm, fragrant wall and you sit there, sweating politely, wondering if this is relaxing or a mild form of punishment.

There is also, I am told, a sauna hat. A felt hat. Worn inside the sauna. To protect your ears from the heat. So far, I have resisted the hat. But I said that about the cold plunge too.

Obviously I went. And have since returned. Though having a towel waved at your face at close range is, I can confirm, intense.

Here is the thing though: a University of Eastern Finland study found that people using a sauna four to seven times a week were 66% less likely to develop dementia. This means the Danes, who treat the sauna as a basic human right, may be onto something rather brilliant.

Suddenly the towel waving makes complete sense.

Part of what makes this so fascinating is that the sauna boom is actually quite new here. The Finns and Swedes have been quietly boiling themselves for centuries, but Copenhagen only really embraced public sauna culture properly after the harbour cleaned up enough to swim in.

Once the water became swimmable, the Danes did what the Danes always do. They organised it beautifully.

Suddenly every harbourfront seemed to acquire a wooden box full of half-naked people staring calmly into the middle distance. Refshaleøen. Nordhavn. Islands Brygge.

Places where industrial cranes once stood are now full of citizens voluntarily cooking themselves before jumping into freezing water and calling it wellness.

The cold water plunge is optional. Nobody will force you. Though if everyone else is doing it, you may feel quietly judged for not joining in. Very Copenhagen. Very now. Until it isn't.

And because this is Denmark, the whole thing somehow became both extremely social and completely silent at the same time.

No motivational mantras. No “journey.” People just sit there together in respectful silence while a sweaty stranger fans eucalyptus air at your face with a towel.

By the end I understood the goose. I understood the ritual. And I understood why the Danes, a people who will barely make eye contact on the street and never waste a word on small talk, will happily sit in a glorified garden shed together with nothing on but a towel and maybe a felt hat.

Hygge, it turns out, has many forms.

I have already written about silent hygge, around the dinner table.

Now, meet its hotter, sweatier cousin: nearly naked hygge.

In most cities, the helmet debate is straightforward. You either care about your brain or you don’t.

The law usually makes the decision for you. I have been told that in New South Wales, Australia, the fine is around 1,500 kroner.

Here, it is up to the individual.

Yet cross the road on a red light and you could end up fined, as I wrote in Jaywalking at Your Peril.

Which is why the helmet debate in Copenhagen becomes oddly cultural. For some Danes, not wearing a helmet is almost a cultural statement.

It says: I have been cycling since I was three. I know every cobblestone on this street. I once cycled home in a snowstorm with a bag of groceries in one hand and a beer in the other — without lights.

So what should the newcomer do?

After my last piece, a friend left a comment that stopped me in my tracks.

Her daughter had completed an internship in the neurology department at Rigshospitalet. She noticed something: every single brain surgeon wore a helmet when they cycled.

Every one.

These were people who had spent their careers looking inside human heads. They had seen what happens when things go wrong. They were not taking chances with their own.

That is not a statistic. That is a data point that is very hard to argue with.

And yet, here I am. Still not wearing one.

Though perhaps the more honest truth is that I bike less these days now that I have a Metro on my doorstep.

Look around Copenhagen and you notice something interesting. The helmets are mostly on the heads of parents.

Which makes complete sense. You set an example. You show the small people that safety matters.

But what about the rest of us adults? The numbers tell their own story.

In London, meanwhile, helmet use is estimated at around 60–70% among regular cyclists. If you arrive here from Britain, strapping one on feels perfectly natural.

In Copenhagen, however, it immediately marks you out as someone who has not quite gone native.

In Amsterdam, it is even more extreme. Around fifteen years ago, a group of Danish road safety officials cycled around the city wearing helmets. They were booed. Other cyclists shouted at them to take them off. The Dutch have since reconsidered their position. But it does tell you something about how deep this goes.

The Danes will tell you that Denmark has some of the highest cycling rates in the world and relatively low fatality numbers. The infrastructure is built for it. Drivers expect cyclists.

And thank goodness for the designated bike lanes. Yet rush hour on them can sometimes feel like an episode of Wacky Races. So it is not always the cars you need to worry about.

So the newcomer looks at the statistics, then at the cobblestones, then at the cyclists flying past on those Autobahn-like cycle lanes — and remains unconvinced.

Because deep down, the fear is not really:
what if I fall off the bike?

It is simply this: will I look ridiculous (and sweaty) when I arrive?

I mean, after all, this is Copenhagen.

People here look extraordinarily good on bikes. Hair matters. The helmet flattens it, creases it, and leaves you arriving at your destination looking as though you have survived a minor electrical incident.

Unless, of course, you are bald. Then you really have no excuses.

Maybe baldness is what will finally turn me into a helmet wearer.

There is a reason Danish cycling content often forgets the helmets. The aesthetic is effortless. The helmet is not.

Though the Danish authorities have certainly tried.

Then again, someone in Scandinavia clearly lost sleep over this.

Enter the Hövding — the Swedish invention that looked like an ordinary collar but exploded into an airbag around your head if you fell off your bike.

No helmet hair. No compromised aesthetic.

Just a slightly puzzled expression from everyone else at the traffic lights.

For a while, they were everywhere. Very Copenhagen. Very now.

Until they suddenly weren’t.

So here is my argument for the lone newcomer standing somewhere between vanity and common sense.

You may not have children to set an example for. But you still have a social life, people to meet, and places to be.

And you cannot always mingle with helmet hair.

Unless, of course, you meet other people with helmet hair.

At which point, the helmet was probably worth it after all.

I laughed. Not knowing what was to come.

Most people, I should add, manage this without quite this level of drama. A stolen bike is practically a rite of passage; a broken elbow is optional.

Five bikes. Four stolen. For me, one dramatic exit over the handlebars. A dislocated and broken elbow. Three nurses holding me down while they forced it back into place. Surgery. Twelve stitches.

Copenhagen has a very particular way of welcoming you.

It started simply enough.

Two second-hand bikes, both stolen. Terrible locks, entirely my fault. Annoying rather than devastating. I told myself I’d just been careless and upgraded.

Which is how I ended up on an e-bike, one of the early models. Heavy, slightly ridiculous, and in my mind at least, the fastest thing on the street. I was Speedy Gonzales on wheels.

My favourite ritual was at traffic lights.

I’d roll up next to someone in full Lycra, clipped-in shoes, the works, head down, ready to explode off the line. The light would turn green and instead of them disappearing into the distance, there I would be, silently, effortlessly, leaving them behind. They were probably scratching their heads. Who was that rocket man?

I loved that bike more than was reasonable. I even named her Mildred.

Looking back, they were having the last laugh. While I sat, they pedalled. While they sweated, I glided. And while they stayed fit, my legs were quietly turning into chicken drumsticks.

One evening I glided to a bar and left Mildred outside on the pavement. Did I lock her? Yes. Was the lock any good? Yes, but I had not locked her to anything fixed. No.

When I came out, she was gone.

A friend told me vans circle the city like vultures, lifting bikes and disappearing into the night. Efficient. Organised. Almost impressive.

So I got myself another e-bike. Better lock this time. Much better lock. And I promised myself to always fix it to something solid. (This bike had not yet been christened with a name.)

Then came the accident.

I was going too fast, obviously showing off again, when a car appeared from nowhere. I braked too hard and went straight over the handlebars.

It stopped being funny very quickly.

Obviously, at the hospital there was no morphine. This is Viking land.

The howling scream I let out when they forced my elbow back into place even surprised me.

After the accident I accepted the universe was sending me a message and went back to a normal bike.

These days I ride something simple and traditional with absolutely nothing to prove. It is, for those keeping count, my fifth and nameless.

I lock it every single time with a lock that probably costs more than the bike itself. And slowly, very slowly, the muscles in my legs are returning to something approaching a normal size.

When I told my Danish friend about the full story, the five bikes, the elbow, the nurses, all of it, he didn’t laugh. He just nodded slowly.

“Now,” he said, “you are a real Copenhagener.”

Turns out the initiation fee was higher than I expected.

What do you do?

Panic, obviously, and briefly consider learning Danish properly.

Then get onto the DR channel as soon as possible, because if you really want to make an impression on your friends’ parents and grandparents, there is only one word you need to know: Matador.

Sweden is the organised planner. Norway is the rich one. Denmark is the food-producing, party-loving cousin who suggests opening another beer because the evening is just getting started.

And don’t get me started on the extended family.

Finland is the quiet one, probably to be found sitting in the sauna, who hasn't said anything all evening but would almost certainly win in any bust-up. Iceland is the eccentric musical cousin nobody quite understands but everyone finds fascinating.

But this isn’t about them. This is about Denmark.

So why, in Nordic teasing, do some people jokingly call Denmark the Mexico of Scandinavia?

The comparison isn’t meant literally, and it’s not about nationality. It’s about the vibe. But when you break it down, the reasons are surprisingly specific — and they come almost entirely from a Swedish and Norwegian perspective.

First, geography. Denmark is south. In Scandinavian terms, that alone carries connotations of warmth, looseness, and a slightly more relaxed attitude to life, even if it is only two degrees warmer. Even I suggested that the Danes are the Italians of the North!

Second, beaches. Actual sand beaches. No skærgård — the rocky island archipelagos that define the Swedish and Norwegian coastlines. Denmark has proper stretches of sand, which to a Norwegian or Swede feels almost Mediterranean.

Third, the booze. In Sweden and Norway, alcohol is sold through a state-controlled monopoly — fixed prices, fixed hours, fixed rules. Here, you can buy it at a kiosk at midnight if you feel like it. Norway pays almost double for the same bottle. Swedes cross the border just to load the car.

Fourth, the nightlife. Louder, later, less apologetic. Danish parties don’t quietly wind down at a sensible hour. They accelerate. Visiting Swedes have been known to check the time at midnight, then again at two, then give up entirely.

Fifth, the rules — or rather the lack of them. Compared to Sweden especially, Denmark operates with a certain cheerful ambivalence. Regulations exist, but they are treated more as suggestions. The vibe is decidedly less buttoned up.

Sixth, the people. Danes are more laid back than their Nordic neighbours. They are in no rush whatsoever — not even in situations where rushing would be reasonable. They work to live rather than live to work, take their holidays seriously, and see no contradiction between being one of the world’s most productive societies and leaving the office at 3pm on a Friday.

These are exactly the reasons young Swedes and Norwegians flood here — the same way Americans head to Mexico. For the cheaper drinks, the better beer, the chilled atmosphere, the sand, and the sense that nobody is going to judge you for having one more.

One footnote worth adding: Denmark used to be significantly cheaper than Sweden too, which added an economic dimension to the migration. That’s less true now. The prices have caught up. But the vibe hasn’t changed.

In the joking Nordic family dynamic, Denmark still plays the same role it always has: earthy, sociable, a little irreverent, and very good at turning a quiet gathering into a full-on party.

Sweden may bring the instructions. Norway may bring the money. But Denmark is the wild child of the party and would definitely bring the beer.

This is something the Brits and Danes have in common, and it goes well beyond alcohol, humour, and talking about the weather.

Here, swearing isn’t merely a release. It is practically an art form. The insults come laced with wit, subtlety, and an almost uncanny fascination with bodily functions.

Take røvbanan (ass banana) for example. I may butcher Enghave Plads with embarrassing consistency and leave the Danes looking confused, but I nailed that little gem on my first try. Some things have to be prioritised.

Ask me to throw out a for helvede at a clueless tourist, or a jubilant skidegodt over a buttery wienerbrød, and suddenly I’m fluent.

Ask me to order a bolle med ost — a perfectly innocent bun with cheese — and the poor shop assistant turns crimson. (Because boller also means to fuck.)

The Danes put it right there on the menu.
Nobody blinks.
Obviously, I blinked.

My command of Danish profanity will always far exceed my ability to assemble a coherent sentence. And honestly, if you are a newcomer, that is not the worst place to start. Because Danes do not want to watch you struggle through a textbook. They want to see you fling a well-timed for satan at life and mean it.

A Danish friend once offered me this advice.

Just put a potato in your mouth. Spit the words out fast and short and nobody will notice you are not speaking Danish.

Honestly, the best language lesson I ever had.

At some point you will find yourself the only foreigner in a room full of Danes. The meeting is in Danish. Obviously. This is Denmark.

Then someone spots you.

“Let’s do this in English,” they announce. And just like that, you are trapped in a web of good intentions.

What follows is less Queen’s English and more linguistic roulette.

Like being on Season 32 of X Factor Danmark, where no one is trying to win, only to survive without being eliminated mid-sentence.

The vocabulary is ambitious. The grammar is strangely inventive. Someone, bravely, even attempts a joke.

Eventually, one Dane cracks. The pressure becomes too much.

They burst back into Danish as though their soul could no longer be contained by the constraints of the English language.

Their mouth visibly shrinks as they accelerate into their native tongue at an alarming rate, as if making up for lost time.

At that point, you cannot help but feel a sense of relief. Theirs and yours.

The thoughtfulness is touching. The desire to include the foreigner is commendable. But hearing a Dane stumble through broken English is endearing only up to a point. After that, it becomes, to put it politely, excruciating.

So here is what you need to know before you walk into that room.

It will happen. You cannot stop it. But you can, quietly and with genuine warmth, give them permission to switch back.

You might not understand every word — or any of them, if you are anything like me — but at least it becomes bearable again.

Obviously there are exceptions.

If you are discussing how to survive three days after a geopolitical crisis, yes, English is entirely appropriate.

For everything else?

Danish, tak.

I actually own three pairs of Birkenstocks. I know.

Brown, black and green.

One for logic.
One for habit.
One for the moment things stopped making sense.

It started with brown.

Sensible. Practical. Just the one pair, I told myself. Every Dane has a pair, I reasoned. It means nothing.

Then black.

Because black is not just a colour here. It is a default setting. And if you are going to blend in, you might as well commit properly.

Then green.

There was no justification for green.
Green was not a decision.
Green was surrender.

Full, unconditional, suspiciously comfortable surrender.

I now own three pairs of Birkenstocks and exactly two remaining pieces of British identity.

A Yorkshire Tea tin.
And a pair of Union Jack socks.

I am guarding them carefully.

These discreet holidays mostly huddle together in May and June. Enough to make you wonder if the whole country is conspiring to take these two months off. And July while they are at it.

If no one reminds you, you could be the only one left in the office while the rest of the country vanishes.

If you were in the office on 14th May, you may already know what I mean. Kristi Himmelfartsdag. Ascension Day. A Thursday.

The country quietly vanished for the whole weekend. No announcement. No memo. Just you, an empty office, and a closed supermarket that knew something you didn’t.

You thought that was it. It is not.

This Sunday and Monday, it happens again.

Pinse (pin-suh, Pentecost) is here. A sneaky long weekend that arrives before most newcomers have worked out what the hell is going on.

Then comes Grundlovsdag (grun-lohs-dae, Constitution Day) on June 5th, though this is not a guaranteed holiday everywhere.

It is relentless. And magnificent.

And yes, Kristi Himmelfartsdag really is called Himmelfartsdag. The Danes find your reaction very amusing.

For newcomers, it is baffling. The Danes are not exactly fervent churchgoers, so why all the semi-religious holidays?

Store Bededag (stoh-beh-thuh-dae, Great Prayer Day) is a perfect example. It sounds deeply religious. It is not.

The real tradition was not prayer. It was varme hveder — warm wheat buns baked with cardamom, bought the night before because the bakers would be closed the next day. Copenhagen would fill with the smell of them. People would stroll the old city ramparts eating buns. Possibly the most hyggeligt thing you have ever heard.

Just as I was finally understanding all of this, Store Bededag was axed by the last government, ostensibly to fund defence spending. In today’s climate, probably a smart move. At the time, seventy percent of Danes said nej tak, according to DR News. You do not mess with the buns.

The fuss over Store Bededag and the fact it may be making a comeback shows that public holidays mean more to Danes than just time off work. They are cultural signals.

Miss them and you could end up alone outside closed supermarkets or sitting in an empty office. Get them right and you will blend in and know when it is time to join the national pause.

That is, if you are lucky enough to have Danish friends who have not disappeared to their summerhouses.

My suggestion is simple. Do not question it. Surrender to it and enjoy every single one of them, even if you cannot remember why you are having the day off.

Sarcasm. Understatement. Jokes that sometimes sound suspiciously like insults. Surely none of that would translate.

Instead, the Danes laughed.

And not polite expat laughter either. Proper, belly-laughing, out-loud laughter.

That reaction taught me something useful about integrating into a new country. Humour can be a shortcut. If people laugh with you (and hopefully not at you), the social distance shrinks very quickly.

Here, you don’t need perfect Danish, just good timing.

It also helps to understand the local style. Here, that usually means keeping things dry, slightly self-deprecating, and never taking yourself too seriously. Many Danes have a dry, slightly dark humour. Connect with that, and you have hit the jackpot.

Luckily for me, it turns out the British and the Danes share something surprisingly important. Alongside a love of alcohol and a tolerance for questionable weather, we also both appreciate dry, irreverent humour.

Sarcasm Is Alive And Kicking

British humour runs on sarcasm. Compliment someone too directly, and people start wondering if you are being ironic. A concept Americans are still trying to crack.

Danes also have a strong sense of irony. A straight-faced comment like “Well, that went well” after a complete disaster is comedy gold.

In many cultures, sarcasm creates confusion. In Denmark, it usually gets a laugh.

Brits are masters of making fun of themselves. Danes are not far behind.

Janteloven (that concept had to come up at some point) is the unwritten rule that discourages people from thinking too highly of themselves. Bragging is frowned upon, but gently mocking your own failures is perfectly acceptable. This makes British self-deprecation translate surprisingly well.

Both cultures enjoy puncturing pretension and this is where Onslow enters the story.

Onslow, played by Geoffrey Hughes, who sadly passed away.

For those unfamiliar, and for anyone under 45, Onslow is the permanently horizontal, beer-drinking philosopher from the TV comedy series Keeping Up Appearances. While his sister-in-law Mrs Bucket, pronounced Bouquet, obsesses over status and appearances, Onslow could not care less.

And somehow, this man became oddly beloved in Denmark in the nineties.

Which makes you wonder. In a country that values equality, dislikes self-importance, and quietly resists anyone getting too big for their boots, Onslow might actually make a good Prime Minister.

Laid-back, unimpressed by status, and allergic to nonsense, he already feels strangely aligned with a certain Danish mindset. If nothing else, he would keep things grounded.

Understated Style

Neither Brits nor Danes tend to perform humour loudly. It is often deadpan. A small comment. A raised eyebrow. A line delivered so casually it almost goes unnoticed.

That understated style is exactly why I survived my first Danish office party. It also explains why British comedies travel so well here. Shows like The Office, or stand-up comedians like Jimmy Carr, feel immediately familiar.

Now imagine delivering that same sarcasm somewhere more literal. Somewhere politeness and consensus matter deeply. Somewhere people take statements at face value. Somewhere like Sweden.

Moving abroad teaches you many things: language, food, social rules. But sometimes what makes a place feel familiar is not the big stuff.

It is laughing at the same stupid jokes.

And here, thankfully, my British humour still works. Which might explain why it felt like home much faster than I expected.

Rent? Paid. Utilities? Covered. Holidays? Booked. But by early spring, your account is effectively empty.

Let’s be clear: Denmark takes sustainability seriously.

Recycling isn’t a chore here; it’s practically a civic sport. The deposit bottle return system run by Dansk Retursystem has been around since the early 2000s. Eat your heart out, UK. We’re still debating whether to even start.

With a 70% emissions reduction target by 2030 and climate neutrality planned for 2050, Denmark is firmly in the global sustainability spotlight. It leads in wind energy and green urban planning, thanks to companies like Vestas and Ørsted, while Copenhagen boasts over 350 km of cycle paths and impressively high cycling rates.

Even your leisure time here gets an environmental upgrade. CopenPay rewards climate-friendly actions with affordable ways to explore the city, and the harbour is clean enough to swim in. Try that in the River Thames and you might think twice.

The Consumption Twist

On paper, it all looks beautifully sustainable. But the quiet complication is consumption.

Danes enjoy one of the highest living standards in the world. Travel, gadgets, furniture, renovations, and more of nearly everything.

For a newcomer, this is where things start to feel slightly confusing. You’ll shop in organic supermarkets, cycle everywhere, sort your recycling into five different bins, and still find yourself surrounded by a level of comfort and consumption that feels, well, substantial.

Much of it is produced abroad, which conveniently means the emissions don’t show up in Denmark’s tidy national statistics. Instead, they show up in the global footprint.

So while domestic emissions look impressively under control, the broader consumption footprint is a bit like a Scandinavian winter coat: stylish, comfortable, and heavier than it appears.

The Meat Question

Food also plays a role. Denmark is an agricultural powerhouse, and meat consumption remains high by global standards.

Livestock production is resource-intensive, requiring large areas of land, especially when animals are raised on feed crops rather than grazing naturally.

In a country where agriculture dominates the landscape, a significant share of the land is devoted to feeding livestock, making meat production a major part of the environmental footprint.

The Paradox of the Green Pioneer

None of this means Denmark isn’t seriously moving forward in the green transition. The country has pioneered wind energy, electrification, district heating, and urban cycling. These are genuine successes.

But Global Footprint Network, the organisation that calculates Earth Overshoot Day, reminds us that sustainability isn’t only about how energy is produced. It’s also about how much we consume.

That is the paradox: a sustainability leader that is also a high-consumption society.

Many countries reach their overshoot date later in the year. For once, Britain gets to feel slightly smug.

The UK’s overshoot date falls around May 16. In other words, when it comes to living within the planet’s means, we Brits manage to stretch the Earth’s annual budget nearly two months longer.

This may be the first time in recorded history that Britain has beaten Denmark on an environmental league table, so we’ll take our wins when we can.

Moveable March

The good news is that Earth Overshoot Day isn’t set in stone. It shifts depending on how societies change their energy systems, consumption habits, and use of resources.

The later in the year it falls, the smaller humanity’s overdraft. Maybe one day we’ll live within the planet’s budget, though I’m not sure I’ll be around to see it.

Until then, Denmark will likely keep doing what it does best: cycling enthusiastically towards a greener future, just with an overloaded cargo bike.

Yet here, it’s a monumental event, a curious blend of theology, tradition, and overconsumption.

When I was finally invited to one, I expected solemnity, perhaps a light sprinkling of Lutheran humility.

Instead, what I got was a festival of gift-giving so lavish it made Christmas look like a budget-conscious affair.

Yes, there was a sermon, and yes, there were handshakes all around, but let’s not pretend anyone was there for the liturgy.

The real action began after the ceremony.

Gifts cascaded endlessly. Cash arrived in quantities that made me wonder if I’d stumbled into a stock market windfall. It was like a birthday party on steroids, with a faint whiff of sanctity to justify the whole thing.

As the newly confirmed beamed over their spoils, a mountain of presents including a TV, game console and smartphone, plus envelopes stuffed with enough kroner to bankroll a small startup, I marvelled at the scale.

It dawned on me that confirmation here is not simply a religious rite of passage. It is a cultural checkpoint. A financial launch pad. More like a competitive family Olympics for generosity, where the main event is envelope thickness.

It’s a rite of passage, but also a lesson in excess. Confirmation isn’t just about affirming faith for some or indifference for others. It’s about affirming that your relatives love you enough to shower you with gifts, cash and cake. And boy, do they love cake.

Strip away the rituals, and what you have is arguably the most efficient wealth redistribution scheme since the creation of the welfare state.

The difference is that this one is voluntary, sugar-fuelled, and comes with three kinds of layer cake.

By the end of the day, I wasn’t sure what had been confirmed: the child’s spiritual maturity or the family’s dedication to outdoing each other in gifts. Maybe Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is onto something with that ‘wealth tax.’

Either way, it was hard not to be impressed. Confirmation here isn’t just a spiritual milestone; it’s a masterclass in conspicuous generosity.

And if this is how the locals approach it, I can’t wait to see what the road to true divine enlightenment looks like.

Brits vs Danes: Why We Drink Differently

Let’s be frank. Alcohol is one thing that unites Brits and Danes, and something we both do exceptionally well.

But our reasons for drinking differ.

Here, alcohol helps introverted Danes ease their shyness, smooth conversations, and temporarily lower social barriers. Anyone who has been to a party will know this. The next day, they revert back to their default setting as if nothing outrageous happened.

In Britain, we drink to loosen our stiff upper lip and release ourselves from our repressed sexual urges.

The Danes, mercifully, skip all that. They’ve been delightfully, unapologetically sexually liberated for years.

Now don’t get me wrong. Danish teenagers, raucous and rowdy, consistently rank among Europe’s heaviest drinkers. Yet whenever officials try to limit alcohol sales or ban sales after 10pm, they are quickly dismissed as un-Danish or excessively bureaucratic.

The Swedish Model

Which is where Sweden becomes interesting. They created a state monopoly on alcohol sales not to squeeze taxpayers, but to stop society buckling under the weight of strong spirits.

The state retailer, Systembolaget, mostly works. Overall consumption is lower and alcohol-related harm is reduced. Planning replaces spontaneity. People queue and stock up for the weekend because an unplanned Friday night drink has its limits.

But anyone who has crossed the Øresund Bridge on a Friday afternoon knows the loophole: cars leave Sweden light and return suspiciously heavy with beer and snaps.

The system reduces harm, but it does not eliminate desire. It simply relocates it.

Friday Nights Won’t Be Cancelled

So imagine a Danish Friday under hypothetical new Swedish-style rules.

How would these Vikings react?

We already have a clue.

When Donald Trump had his Diet Coke meltdown, threatening tariffs and a Greenland land grab, the Danes didn’t panic. They built an app.

UdenUSA, meaning “Without USA,” created by two young Danes, helps users identify where products come from and nudges them toward non-American alternatives.

Which is why my prediction is simple.

With one hand on the app and the other wrapped firmly around a Tuborg, there would be no drama. Just quiet, clever resistance with a clean interface.

Efficient, collaborative, and in full tribal mode, the Danes would push back with the unmistakable air of “we will sort this out ourselves”.

There would be no dramatic uprising. No storming of buildings — that would take too much effort.

Instead, they would take to the streets with quiet determination, showing their disdain while bending the rules to protect their Friday night ritual.

Bend the Rules, Keep the Ritual

Queues outside government alcohol shops would be orderly, polite, and annoyingly precise. Tech-savvy Danes would develop even more apps, and WhatsApp groups would be created to ensure nobody missed their slot, proving egalitarian values ​​were still alive and kicking.

Many would become amateur strategists, plotting Systembolaget routes across the city, hitting multiple shops in one outing and calculating litres per minute with stock-trader precision.

Others would turn to home brewing and private gatherings, transforming living rooms into improvised pubs, while Sebastian, the 1970s Danish rock and pop star, would be back on the turntable.

And perhaps this is the most Danish lesson of all. When faced with adversity, the response would be calm, creative, and resolute.

The system would be bent and adapted to work for the people, all while preserving what matters most: the social, communal heart of the experience.

No revolution. Just optimization.
