Massacre on the Mountain

In less than a month, I’ll be making my first-ever appearance on the West Coast. This event looks like it’s going to be amazing, and takes place at the Timberline Lodge at the base of Mt. Hood in Oregon. You may recognize this as the famous hotel where The Shining was filmed. This hotel is the exterior of the Overlook, which was made famous by the Kubrick film. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved Sci-fi/Fantasy. My reading at an early age was centered around horror and fantasy, with a little bit of sci-fi thrown in. Most of the sci-fi media I consumed were movies, until I discovered Warhammer 40K. For those of you who’ve never read or played 40k, it’s a hyper-violent future world surrounding the empire of man. These books really opened my eyes to the world of sci-fi, leading me deeper into classic space literature.

After digging deeper into the realm of sci-fi, I couldn’t help but feel the itch of creativity. I had an idea for a prison planet, in which the planet is just as dangerous as the men imprisoned there. But I’m a horror author, so stretching into sci-fi wasn’t something I was prepared to do. That was until Aethon acquired Wicked House.

Wicked House was already an established publisher, and now, combined with Aethon, I knew they’d be a powerhouse. The owner of Aethon, Rhett Bruno, reached out and asked if I’d like to be a part of the new Wicked House. I immediately said yes and pitched him an idea. Knowing Aethon was the parent company to Wicked House, I sent Rhett my ideas for Planet Slaughter.

Rhett and his team decided to take a chance on my story and the contract was signed.

2025 is dead

Another year has come and gone. 2025 saw a lot of growth in our genre, across movies, shows, and, of course, books. I felt like I was moving slowly, and then I realized I had still managed to publish three books and 1 issue of The Obituaries, so maybe I should cut myself some slack. My writing has stayed steady, and attending three writing retreats helped me crank out large chunks of work in short periods of time. I’m ending the year working on my upcoming sci-fi horror novel, PLANET SLAUGHTER, which will be published by Wicked House/Aethon Press in 2026. This book is a lot of fun, and I think readers of horror and sci-fi will find common ground in the brutal world.

2025 also saw the release of my longest book to date, SLAUGHTERHOUSE MOAN. This book is my love letter to grindhouse flicks, slashers, creature features, and of course, Edward Lee. This is a book I’m very proud of, and I feel like my writing really took a turn. It was a project born of a short story many years ago, and was nurtured into a disgusting novel full of almost every trigger you could imagine. Not only that, but it has heart. I really focused on the characters and what makes them tick. There’s plenty of blood, guts and bodily fluid, but beyond that is a story.

Now, RUNTS is a bit of a different story. I wanted to do something nasty, with dark humor and mutants. And I feel like I succeeded in RUNTS. This novella is wild, full of crude jokes, and plenty of violence. Again, I feel like Ed Lee was on my shoulder when I ventured into the backwoods to find these creatures.

ALL THE RAGE was my attempt at some holiday horror. It’s a novella that packs a punch and shows the dangers of following trends.

A STORY OF SORROW OMNIBUS hardcover pre-order

My Splatter Fantasy series, A STORY OF SORROW, is finally getting a hardcover/omnibus treatment. These novellas began as a serial story and were released that way. Three books, rapidly released, telling a story of a man named Sorrow and his not-so-jolly men as they battle necromancers, monsters, and demons. I loved these little books, but knew I had to combine them into a bigger collection. Justin T. Coons did a fantastic job with the artwork for this omnibus, and I added a little essay in the beginning. This book comes in right around 85k words and should scratch the itch of horror and fantasy fans alike. The pre-order is live on my site, and I’m hoping to have them shipped around the end of January. The paperback and ebook will be out on February 14th, but you can pre-order the ebook now.

A few years ago, I was approached by Death’s Head Press to join their upcoming chapbook series. When I spoke with Pat Harrison about the content of the books, he essentially gave me the green light to do whatever I wanted. I was elated, considering I had an idea for a small splatter fantasy series revolving around a man named Sorrow. I pitched the books to him, and he told me to go for it, but there was a 12k word count limit. For those of you who read fantasy, you know 12k words isn’t a lot. I was torn. I wanted to write the books, but wasn’t sure I could tell the whole story in so few words. I worked hard and cut what needed to be cut, but it didn’t feel right. After a while, my contract was approaching expiration. It didn’t appear that DHP would be able to publish the books in time. Finally, the company rebranded and the project was scrapped, restoring my rights.

I was thrilled to have them back, knowing there was so much left to tell. I quickly jumped on the books, more than doubling each one to 28k words in a matter of months. The best part was that I was able to obtain the original covers, which were created by Luke Spooner. I wanted to do a rapid release, dropping each book every month for three months. The reception for them was great, but everyone kept asking when I’d do a combined collection of all three. For years, I thought about it, going back and forth on the idea, until finally I pulled the trigger.

Normally, I commission Nick Justus for my cover art, but after seeing Justin T. Coons's work, I knew he’d be the perfect artist to bring the book to life. I sent copies of the books to Justin, which he read blindingly fast, and the art was underway.

Now, you’ll finally be able to see the hard work and finished project of Justin’s amazing cover. These books were so much fun to write, and I can’t wait to get back into this world once again.

This collection is almost 90k words of sword, sorcery, and splatter, following Sorrow and his men on their journey. It’s a blend of horror and fantasy, heavy on the gore and monsters. If you’ve been curious about reading fantasy, this is a great starting point. There’s not a ton of weird names, religions, nations, magic systems etc, that seem daunting to most new readers of fantasy. It’s pretty damn straightforward with quick pacing and lots of action. I hope you’ll give it a shot.

As with most of my books, this one will be available in ebook, hardcover, paperback, and audiobook formats. The ebook and paperback are set to be released on February 14th (a lovely Valentine’s gift, if I do say so myself). The audiobook, read by John Wayne Comunale, is in the final stages of production. As for the hardcover, I’ve ordered proofs, and once they pass my quality control, I’ll make them available for pre-order via my website.

ALL THE RAGE cover reveal

I’ve been wanting to write some Christmas horror for a while, but I didn’t want to dedicate an entire novel to a story. Not that there aren’t some great ones out there (John Lynch’s book, Christmas Eve Carnage, is a big hit in the genre), but it wasn’t something I wanted to undertake. I wanted to do something short and visceral, while telling a cool story. I had the idea for a few of them, and wanted the stories to link up. A few years ago, Aron, Kris, and I released a Christmas edition of the Obituaries. I had a blast writing that story, and since it was an early issue in our Obits line, I wanted to reintroduce it to the readers who may have missed out. ALL THE RAGE is the title story in this little book (4x6, and 172 pages) and follows a mysterious toy that all the kids have to have under the tree. It ties in nicely with the other story, my re-print from the early Obits days, ALL HAIL THE CHRISTMAS STAR, and I think the readers will like what I’ve done.

Nick Justus did a fantastic job on this cover, and Matt Wildasin finished it off with the interior format and wrap. This book is a fun, holiday ride and makes the perfect stocking stuffer. It will only be available in paperback, and the Amazon release is scheduled for 11/28 (Black Friday). After years of working on this book, it is finally out. This book started off as a short story many years ago and has evolved into my longest, most vile book to date. Slaughterhouse Moan hardcover pre-order

The hardcover edition of my new book, Slaughterhouse Moan, is now available. This is my longest book to date, coming in at just over 81k words. This hardcover features a dual-cover, with Nick Justus and Len Danovich creating the main cover and Pzychopart lending his artistic talents to the hardcase cover. My next and longest novel, SLAUGHTERHOUSE MOAN, is coming soon. This cover is one of my favorites, drawn by Nick Justus and inked by Len Danovich. This book has been in my mind for years, and it’s finally coming out. What originally started as a short story many years ago has now been given a new life. This story is by far my most depraved, violent, and sexual piece of fiction to date, with some of the most brutal kills and graphic sex scenes. Mary Danner provided her editing skills by polishing this manuscript, and Sierra Kline has been brought on once again for the audiobook (Sierra is the voice behind Talia, Plastic Monsters, and Through the Eyes of Desperation: The Black Version). This book is expected to be ready for Books and Brews in late July, and the hardcover will feature dual artwork, just like Sucking Chest Wound. The Amazon release is set for August 29th, but copies will be available on my site well before that date.

RUNTS wrap

Don Noble did a great job with this wrap; the one created for the hardcover is even better. This book is wild, fun, short, and brutal…pretty much the literary embodiment of me, lol. Everything looks to be going according to plan, and I’ll have hardcover copies of this book and the associated swag for STC at the end of the month. The ebook and paperback release will be on 4/18/25, so the only way to get this book before that is to come to the con or order it on my site at the end of March.

This was one of those books that was “easy” to write. And when I say “easy” I don’t mean rushed or not plotted well. No, it was just fun, and the ideas wouldn’t stop coming, which helped a lot. Scares that Care: Authorcon V

I can’t believe the convention is right around the corner. This is the one event I look forward to every year. It’s the best event for readers, writers, and aspiring authors alike. This event is in beautiful Williamsburg, VA, and takes place over three days, 3/28-3/30. There’s plenty to do besides spending your hard-earned money on books. Readings, panels, workshops, contests, donations, etc.; this con has it all. Plus, the area is excellent for exploring US history. This is a charity event at its core, so your admission price goes to a worthy cause. If you can make it, please do. You won’t be disappointed.

Writer’s Retreat

In the middle of January, Aron Beauregard and I rented a lakeside cabin in Connecticut. It was cold as hell, but the place was perfect for crafting horror. During the retreat, I was able to break my daily word count record and wrote 12,500 words in a single day. I think my total for the duration of the 4 days (3 writing days) was right around 25k words. This is more words than I’ve been able to get out in the last few months. If you’re an author, I highly recommend trying to attend or setting up your own retreats. You don’t have to do anything special. Hell, you don’t even need a seperate place or company, but make dedicated time to write. I like attending these retreats with another author or two, but Aron and I have developed a great working relationship. We can bounce ideas off of each other during our breaks, and we’ve developed much better stories because of this. I was able to finish my new book, RUNTS, and get a decent amount of work done on an upcoming novel

During the retreat, Aron brought a copy of his new novel, HANDYMAN. Since he likes to sleep in and I’m an early riser, I promptly stole this copy and started reading it. Now, those of you who know me know that YELLOW is my favorite book by him. Well, that has changed. HANDYMAN is his best book to date, full of twists, turns, gore, emotion, and growth. RUNTS cover reveal

As I mentioned above, during the retreat, I finished my next book, RUNTS. RUNTS is a novella, coming in at around 36k words. This book is my homage to the pulp monster movies of my youth. THE TOXIC AVENGER, THE HILLS HAVE EYES, WRONG TURN, all of those movies inspired this book. This story is full of sex, violence, graphic kills, and all the weird mutants you can handle. I expect it to be ready by mid-March and should debut at Scares that Care Authorcon in Williamsburg, Virginia. The cover art was created by the talented Nick Justus, and he absolutely nailed my vision

2024 review

And just like every year since 2020, 2024 has gone by in the blink of an eye. This year was a great year, not only for me but for indie horror as a whole. I feel like every year, this subgenre we all love so much, grows. And that wouldn’t be possible without our wonderful readers who support us. From the reviews online to the social media posts, each mention of our work helps. This year, I saw many of my peers doing book signings at major stores, such as Barnes and Noble. This is a feat that many of us never thought possible. But here we are, sharing the shelves with legends. So many of us have achieved dreams, while others are just starting.

Whatever you do, don’t give up. If you truly love to write and create, keep going. Many authors make very little money, but the joy of putting work into the world is rewarding in itself. If you’re in this genre to make money, you might be sorely disappointed. And then again, some of you might hit the lottery with a book.

Things to come in 2025

As we enter the new year, I’m hard at work to bring you some new horror and maybe more. In mid-January, I’ll be attending my first writing retreat of the year. I have a goal in mind for this trip and want to write a depraved novella, in a few short days. I’m also about 36k into a new novel, which is probably one of the most vile things I’ll ever put on paper.

2025 will also be the first year I’m cutting back on travel. I only plan on attending a few conventions, as travel is taking a toll on me. The first con will be Scares that Care in Williamsburgh Virginia. This event has become a staple in the horror community, centered around horror books. But the main reason for this event is charity. The money generated from this convention goes to many deserving individuals who have suffered from sickness and injury. This is THE BEST convention in the world and you should do everything in your power to attend. It’s at the end of March, so mark your calendars now.

In August I’ll be attending my first Books and Brews in Indiana. I’ve heard nothing but great things about this event and can’t wait to go. I might do a few more local cons here and there, but most of my travel will be along the Upper East Coast/ New England area.

Birthday Sale!

Yes, today is my 39th birthday (damn, I’m getting old). I always loved having a birthday the day before Halloween, especially because it kept me out of trouble (kind of). While my friends were out egging houses, and throwing toilet paper, I was inside eating cake and opening presents. I’m sure most areas of the world have some form of ‘Mischief Night’ but in the Northeast, it was almost its own holiday. And then came the big day: Halloween. Some years it felt a little odd being a year older and still trick or treating, but I didn’t care (I didn’t stop putting on my Ghostface costume until I was 16). It was my time of the year, and not just for my birthday.

Horror. It was the horror time of the year. I would—shockingly—get something horror related for my big day. Whether it was a new movie or book, the spirit of the season was always with me. But there was something different about reading or watching horror on a cold New York day in the fall.

My next book release is on the horizon. After a few minor setbacks, I have finally ordered the hardcover proofs. The hardcover is limited to only 100 numbered copies and features dual covers. The NSFW cover will be printed on the hard case of the book, and the disgusting face will adorn the dust jacket wrap.

This collection features 11 stories and 11 illustrations. Some of my earlier stories have gone out of print, so I decided to re-edit and revive them with nasty pictures. The paperback release will be scheduled for later in November, but no date has been set as of now. Sucking Chest Wound cover reveal

Over the years of writing, I’ve amassed quite a few short stories. I love short stories and they’re such a nice break from writing novels and novellas. I enjoy the medium, whether I’ve submitted them to anthologies, mailers, or collections. It always pains me to see them eventually go out of print, but with the luxury of self-publishing, they don’t stay gone for very long. I compiled a collection with Patrick C. Harrison III a few years ago called Visceral 2. This anthology contained some of my most fucked up stories, but unfortunately, that book has gone out of print. I couldn’t let those stories die, so I’m bringing them back. Not only will they be featured in this collection, but some of my other stories will be joining them. This collection will also feature my viral, gross-out story, STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE. If you’ve never read this story, good for you. If you have, I’m sorry. It’s disgusting and vulgar, but hey, it was a gross-out contest. This collection will also feature a new story, which is the title story.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, every story is illustrated by the talented Nick Justus. Brian Csati brings his artistic madness to the cover art and Don Noble delivers with a special erotic cover (that’ll be revealed only on my site, so I don’t get in trouble with Substack). I’m in the final stages of editing and Mary Danner did a wonderful job with her edits. I’m hoping to have this ready for Halloween, so keep an eye out for it.

I wrote…a kids’ book?

Yes, you’ve read that correctly. Over the last year or so, my youngest daughter and I (she’s now 10, but started on this when she was 8) worked on a book. She’s not quite a horror junkie, but loves the scary stuff, especially when it comes to Halloween. We’d talked about her idea for a while, and after a few nudges by me to adjust a few plot holes, we came up with the story.

The book is called Dead in the Dark, which she titled herself. It was a fun book to write, with her hanging over my shoulder as I typed away. Nick Justus added some amazing illustrations to it, which really helped capture her ideas. If you have any children looking for a summer reading book, this is it. Check it out below.

Noah and Haley are just two ordinary kids—that’s until a monster comes to town. When the creature kills someone close to Noah, he and Haley know they must do something. The adults don’t believe them, and the other kids make fun of them, but they’re determined to stop the beast.

Can Noah and Haley prevent the monster from killing anyone else, or will they be left dead in the dark?

Upcoming Appearances

With the spooky season upon us, I, like many horror authors, will be making a lot of appearances in the near future.

The first one is only in a few days on 9/12/24. Myself, Aron Beauregard, Kristopher Triana, Wrath James White, Judith Sonnet, Shane McKenzie and Lucas Mangum will be signing at Vortex books and comics in Columbia, PA. This store is owned and operated by Brian Keene and Mary SanGiovanni, and is fast becoming a haven for indie horror.

On 9/21/24, I’ll be joining Aron Beauregard, Kristopher Triana and Mona Kabbani at the CT Horrorfest in Hartford, CT. This is my first time there, but I’ve been told this is one of the best horror cons on the East Coast. I can’t wait to see everyone.

The day after, I’ll once again be at my local street fair, the Port Jervis Fall Foliage Festival. This is one of my favorite events of the year because my kids come with me. They love hanging out and helping me sell books. This will be my 5th year at the event and it gets better every year.

ONLY PSYCHOS audiobook

This is one of my absolute favorite books that I’ve written. It’s loosely based on a true story and has some of the most fucked up characters. Many readers absolutely love the twists and turns, especially the final one. And now, it’s available on audiobook. Sean Walpole did a stellar job bringing to life the multitude of characters and I can’t wait to work with him in the future.
