In my last newsletter, I did a bit of venting about the hyped advertising that seems to follow us everywhere—on social media, in our inboxes, and increasingly in the health and wellness world. I began to notice a recurring pattern: a truth, followed by another truth, followed by another truth, and yet another perfectly valid statement. Each piece may be accurate on its own. But then they are carefully bundled together and presented beneath one much bigger conclusion: Therefore, this will work. And somehow, somewhere between all those individual truths and that final promise, possibility quietly turns into certainty.

And even with all my years of experience, I fell for one of those ads.

I have experienced digestive challenges since birth and, despite decades of training and exploring many approaches, I still had not found the solution. So when I spoke with a doctor who seemed to understand the problem and offered a convincing explanation—and a solution—I bought the program ($$$$).

It did not work for me. Instead, over time, I experienced increasing brain fog, increased digestive problems, tiredness, and eventually weakness. I ultimately had to reach back into my own bag of tools to help myself recover.

BEWARE… but more importantly, BE AWARE.

Since then, I have become much more attentive to how these ads are constructed: the legitimate facts, the compelling explanations, the testimonials, and the subtle progression from this might help to this will work.

Hope is important. Possibility is important. But neither is certainty.

Previously, I had attended workshops on how to position my practice, which had been built mostly through word of mouth.

At one point, the presenter asked me about the focus of my practice. I told him, and he immediately came up with a clever “hook.”

When I said, “But I can’t promise that,” he responded that it didn’t matter. The purpose was to “catch” the attention of potential clients.

That disturbed me.

Then, during several recesses, we were encouraged to exchange testimonials with other participants.

“What would you like me to say?”

We would then “talk from our heart,” giving glowing testimonials about services we had never experienced and, in some cases, knew nothing about.

The testimonials on my website were different. They came from real clients describing transformations they had actually experienced.

Yet I was so disgusted by what I had witnessed that I stopped reading testimonials. I also stopped asking clients to tell me about their experiences.

There was another interesting piece. The presenter was a master at using embedded commands—subtle linguistic suggestions woven into ordinary conversation. Yet he didn't teach that part of his method. People went home and followed the marketing strategies he did teach, but many couldn't reproduce his results. They were copying the visible formula while an important part of what made his own approach effective was missing.

Today, the problem has become even more complicated.

AI can generate a whole slew of convincing testimonials tailored perfectly to someone’s “claim to fame.” They can sound personal, emotional and spontaneous—and describe experiences that never happened.

HOWEVER...

If AI can help create hype, it can also help us examine it.

It can ask the questions the advertisement doesn’t ask. It can separate an observation from the explanation attached to it. It can look for evidence behind a physiological claim. And it can help us recognize when “this happened to me” quietly becomes “this will happen to you.”

And that brings me to the question I want to explore today:

When does hope become hype?

A genuine testimonial tells us what happened to one person.
Marketing turns it into evidence of what will happen to the next person.

Those are not the same thing.

I learned this lesson in a very simple way years ago. A friend and former student of mine was losing weight. I asked what she was doing differently.

“One tablespoon of MCT oil a day. That’s all I changed.”

Wonderful. I tried it.

Nothing happened.

Her experience was real. So was mine.

That’s the problem with turning a testimonial into a promise. “It worked for me” is valuable information. It is not a prediction of what will happen to you.

We Do Need Magnesium

Let’s take magnesium as an example.

Magnesium is not hype. It is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions in the body. We need it for energy production, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose regulation, blood pressure regulation, protein synthesis, bone health, and many other processes.

The question becomes: Which magnesium should we take?

And that’s where things get interesting.

Ask one practitioner and you may be told magnesium glycinate is best, particularly for relaxation and sleep. Someone else recommends citrate for constipation. Magnesium malate is promoted for energy and muscle discomfort. Threonate is promoted for the brain. Taurate is associated with cardiovascular health.

Before long, it begins to sound as though we need a medicine cabinet filled with different forms of magnesium, each with its own job.

Then an advertisement appeared in my feed with the perfect solution:

Why choose? Take them all.

The product contained multiple forms of magnesium in a single “full-spectrum” complex. Better yet, the advertising explained what each form supposedly did and presented the formulation as a solution for everything from poor sleep and anxiety to bloating, cortisol and stubborn belly fat.

And then came the magic word:

Liposomal.

According to testimonials, that was why this magnesium worked when all the others hadn’t. It “actually absorbs.” It gets into depleted cells. It restores cellular energy. One woman explained that probiotics and “debloat” products couldn’t work until magnesium had first restored the cells.

It sounds wonderfully scientific.

But is it?

What the Research Actually Tells Us

Different magnesium compounds really can differ in solubility, elemental-magnesium content, gastrointestinal effects and bioavailability. For example, some organic magnesium salts generally appear to be better absorbed than magnesium oxide. Magnesium citrate can also have an osmotic laxative effect, which is one reason it may help constipation.

So the idea that the form matters has a scientific foundation.

The leap occurs when that becomes:

Magnesium glycinate = sleep
Magnesium malate = energy
Magnesium threonate = brain
Magnesium taurate = heart

The evidence isn’t nearly that tidy.

A magnesium molecule doesn’t arrive carrying instructions saying, “I’m glycinate, so I’m headed to the bedroom.” Once absorbed, magnesium participates in the body’s magnesium pool and tightly regulated physiology. The compound it’s attached to can influence absorption, tolerability and pharmacokinetics, and the accompanying molecule may have effects of its own. But that doesn’t automatically establish the highly specific therapeutic assignments commonly presented in supplement advertising.

The same caution applies to liposomal magnesium.

Liposomal delivery is a legitimate technology. Encapsulating substances in phospholipid structures can, under some circumstances, alter absorption and delivery. But “liposomal” on a label does not establish that a particular product is clinically superior to conventional magnesium—or that ordinary magnesium “doesn’t absorb.”

And then we arrive at the biggest leap of all:

Magnesium → cortisol → belly fat.

There is legitimate research connecting magnesium with stress physiology, glucose metabolism, sleep and many other processes. Chronic stress can also influence cortisol and metabolic health.

But those relationships don’t establish that a woman’s protruding abdomen is caused by magnesium deficiency, that magnesium will lower her cortisol, or that correcting magnesium status will make her belly disappear in two or three weeks.

Even the advertising blurs two completely different things:

Bloating is not belly fat.

An abdomen can change size because of gas, constipation, intestinal contents, fluid retention, posture and numerous other factors without losing an ounce of abdominal fat.

Yet in the testimonials, “belly fat,” “bloating,” “balloon stomach,” “stress weight” and “cortisol belly” become virtually interchangeable.

That’s Where Hope Becomes Hype

The fascinating thing is that the hype doesn’t necessarily begin with a lie.

We need magnesium. True.

Different forms of magnesium have different properties. True.

Magnesium participates in cellular energy production. True.

Magnesium interacts with systems involved in the stress response. True.

Then legitimate pieces of physiology are assembled into a much larger conclusion:

Your belly is caused by cortisol because your cells are depleted of magnesium, and this particular eight-form liposomal magnesium restores your cells, lowers cortisol and makes the belly disappear.

That’s a very different claim.

And that’s one of the easiest ways for sophisticated health marketing to fool us:

The individual facts can be true while the story constructed from them is not established.

When the Price of Hope Is Thousands of Dollars

Magnesium is a relatively inexpensive example. But the same pattern appears in a growing number of weight-loss and metabolic-health programs promoted by physicians, chiropractors and other health practitioners.

I have seen at least half a dozen of them recently.

In preparing this article, I looked more closely at several programs offered by MDs, chiropractors, and other health practitioners. What struck me was how often the message was essentially the same: the other approaches are addressing the wrong thing, in the wrong way, or in the wrong order. Each practitioner had discovered the missing root cause, the correct sequence, or the protocol that finally gets it right.

The message varies, but the underlying premise is remarkably similar.

You haven’t failed. You’ve simply been following the wrong protocol.

Perhaps you haven’t healed your gut first. Perhaps your liver isn’t detoxifying properly. Perhaps your cells aren’t receiving nutrients. Perhaps your hormones are out of balance. Perhaps you’ve been eating the right foods in the wrong order.

And, fortunately, the practitioner selling the program has discovered the correct sequence.

Again, some of these programs may genuinely help people. That’s not the issue.

What interests me is what happens when they don’t.

I’ve purchased supplements from a physician who was very confident in his products. But he also said that if they didn’t work as expected, I could return them for a refund—no questions asked.

They didn’t work for me. I received my money back.

To me, that’s ethical.

But what happens when the investment isn’t a bottle of supplements, but thousands of dollars for a health or weight-loss program?

Before enrolling, the prospective client may hear extraordinary success stories. She may be told that previous approaches failed because they didn’t address the “root cause.” She may be shown dramatic before-and-after photographs and testimonials. She may be reassured that this protocol is different because it treats the body in the correct sequence.

She begins to believe:

Finally. Someone understands what’s wrong. This is going to work.

Then comes the contract.

No refunds.

And now something about the relationship has changed.

If the program works spectacularly, the success becomes a testimonial for the protocol.

But what if it doesn’t work?

What if the person follows the protocol faithfully and doesn’t lose the promised weight? What if her symptoms don’t improve? What if she actually feels worse?

The practitioner keeps the money.

The client carries both the financial risk and the health consequences.

And that raises an uncomfortable ethical question:

If you are confident enough in your protocol to sell certainty, shouldn’t you be confident enough to share some of the risk when it fails?

There can be legitimate reasons professional services aren’t refundable: practitioners and coaches have provided their time, testing may have been performed, products may have been consumed, and nobody can guarantee a biological outcome.

But that’s precisely the point.

If the outcome cannot reasonably be guaranteed in the contract, perhaps it shouldn’t sound guaranteed in the marketing.

A no-refund policy itself isn’t necessarily unethical.

A practitioner could say upfront:

“This program costs $5,000. I cannot predict your individual outcome. Some people improve considerably, some improve modestly, and some don’t respond. The fee covers my expertise, testing, products and time, so it is nonrefundable.”

A prospective client can make an informed decision about that.

The ethical tension arises when uncertainty appears in the legal agreement while certainty dominates the sales presentation.

That’s the disconnect.

The marketing sells the outcome.
The contract sells the service.

And when things don’t work, suddenly the distinction becomes very important.

That brings us beautifully back to the title:

Hope: “We’ve had encouraging results, and I believe this approach may help you.”

Hype: “You’ve finally found the answer.”

The first acknowledges biological individuality.

The second sells certainty—while the fine print may quietly make sure that all the uncertainty belongs to the customer.

Learning to Sell Certainty

There is another piece to this puzzle. Health practitioners aren’t only learning about health anymore. Many are enrolling in expensive business and marketing programs that teach them how to create irresistible offers, identify a client’s “pain points,” develop a unique mechanism, overcome objections, use testimonials, and sell high-ticket programs.

There is nothing inherently wrong with learning how to run a successful practice. Practitioners need to earn a living.

The problem comes when good marketing requires greater certainty than good healthcare allows.

Science says:

“This may help. The evidence suggests. Some people respond. We don’t yet know why it works for some and not others.”

Marketing prefers:

“We found the root cause. This is why everything else failed. Follow the right protocol.”

Uncertainty doesn’t sell nearly as well as certainty.

And perhaps that is one reason we’re seeing so many remarkably similar health programs. The practitioner may sincerely believe in what he or she is offering. But somewhere along the way, a clinical hypothesis becomes a marketing promise.

What About the People Who Don’t Get Better?

There is another danger in building a practice around success stories: we naturally pay attention to the wins.

The client who loses 40 pounds becomes the testimonial. The person whose chronic symptoms disappear becomes the case study. The dramatic before-and-after photograph becomes the advertisement.

But what about the people for whom the protocol doesn’t work?

Or those who follow it faithfully and feel worse?

They may quietly disappear from the practice. They certainly aren’t featured in the next advertisement. And unless the practitioner deliberately follows up with them, their experiences may never become part of the practitioner’s assessment of the protocol.

This creates a distorted picture.

If ten people are treated, and three have spectacular results, we can focus on those three and sincerely become more convinced that this approach works.

But we also need to be curious about the other seven.

Why didn’t it work for them?

Were they different physiologically? Was the original hypothesis incomplete? Did we select the wrong intervention? Was something else responsible for the successes attributed to the protocol?

Those aren’t failures to hide. They’re information.

In fact, they may teach us more than the spectacular successes.

And this connects beautifully with the broader theme we’ve been developing about certainty and self-sealing beliefs. A good hypothesis should be modified by the cases that don’t fit it, not protected from them.

If we only study our wins, we aren’t evaluating our method. We’re marketing it.

But What If the Testimonial Is True?

An extraordinary result can be real without our explanation for the result being correct.

A testimonial doesn’t have to be fake to mislead us.

Suppose someone takes a new supplement and, three weeks later, sleeps better, has more energy, and notices less bloating. She may be telling the absolute truth when she says, “This changed my life.”

What she cannot know from her experience alone is why she improved.

Was it the supplement? Was she deficient in the nutrient? Did something else change at the same time? Did her symptoms naturally fluctuate? Did expecting improvement change something?

My PhD thesis, The Power of the Mind in Healing, explored, among other things, the placebo effect. I have never liked the expression “just placebo,” because expectation isn’t necessarily imaginary. What we believe and expect can influence perception, behavior—and sometimes measurable physiology.

The Two Milkshakes Study that I’ve written about recently illustrates this beautifully: what people believed they were consuming influenced their physiological response.

So yes, the woman taking the magnesium may genuinely feel better.

Her improvement is an observation.

“The liposomal magnesium restored her depleted cells, lowered her cortisol and eliminated her cortisol belly” is an explanation.

Those are two different things.

An extraordinary result can be real without our explanation for the result being correct.

So How Do We Tell Hope From Hype?

Not a giant checklist—perhaps five questions:

1. What exactly is being promised? Is this possibility language or outcome language?

2. What evidence supports the complete claim—not merely the individual scientific facts used to construct it?

3. Are failures discussed as openly as successes?

4. If it doesn’t work, does the practitioner reconsider the hypothesis—or explain why the client failed the protocol?

5. Who carries the risk? Is the practitioner selling tremendous confidence while contractually placing all uncertainty on the client?

   

Fifteen years ago, I objected: “But I can’t promise that.”

The marketer told me it didn’t matter.

It does matter.

Not because we should stop offering hope.

Not because remarkable healing doesn’t occur.

Not because every claim without a randomized controlled trial is meaningless.

But because when another human being entrusts us with their health, hope and money, there should be a difference between saying:

“I have seen this happen, and I believe it may be possible for you.”

and

“This is what my program will do for you.”

Again:

Celebrate your wins. Share them. Let them inspire others.
But if you want to understand whether your method works, study the people it didn't help, too.

The danger is allowing success to make us certain.

We humans don’t particularly like “I don’t know.”

We prefer answers. Diagnoses. Labels. Explanations. Predictions. A clear cause followed by a clear solution.

We want to know what is going to happen tomorrow, next month, next year.

Certainty feels safe.

The problem is that life—and particularly the human body—is rarely that tidy.

Recently, I read a fascinating conversation between Dr. Pierre Kory and the writer known as A Midwestern Doctor. They were discussing something that went far beyond medicine:

Our difficulty tolerating uncertainty may push us toward rigid, black-and-white thinking.

That sentence stayed with me.

The Comfort of a Number

When I had my brick-and-mortar practice in California, I performed all kinds of tests with my clients: urine tests, zinc tests, saliva tests, stress tests, and others.

People loved them.

There was something reassuring about watching a color change or seeing a number appear on a piece of paper. Suddenly, something that had felt vague or subjective seemed measurable.

A number feels certain.

And medicine certainly shares our fascination with measurement. We test blood, urine, hormones, enzymes, antibodies, genes, heart rhythms, brain waves and just about anything else we can find a way to measure.

Sometimes those measurements are extremely valuable—even lifesaving.

But I learned something interesting from a nurse colleague of mine. Curious about the consistency of some of the tests we were using, she experimented on herself. She repeated the same tests at different times of the day and on different days.

The results changed.

Of course they did.

The human body isn’t a static object. Hormones fluctuate. Hydration changes. We eat. We sleep. We exercise. We become stressed and relax again. Our internal environment is constantly adjusting.

Then there is another layer: interpretation.

I remember a physician I worked with pointing out that even an apparently “objective” laboratory result might be interpreted differently depending on whether the physician looking at it had been trained in the United States or Germany.

The number may be objective.

What the number means is not always quite so objective.

That doesn’t make testing useless. Far from it.

It simply reminds us that measurement is information—not necessarily certainty.

And perhaps that is where some of our trouble begins.

We feel safer when something has been measured, named and placed inside a reference range. But the living human being sitting in front of us is considerably more complicated than the number printed beside their name.

When “I Don’t Know” Becomes Uncomfortable

There is actually a term for this: intolerance of uncertainty.

It describes the difficulty some of us experience when we don’t know what is going to happen—or when we don’t have enough information to reach a definite conclusion.

And perhaps there is a progression worth considering:

Uncertainty → discomfort → search for certainty → rigid thinking → black-and-white conclusions

When uncertainty becomes intolerable, nuance itself can begin to feel threatening.

“I don’t know” sounds unacceptable.

“It depends” sounds evasive.

“Perhaps” sounds weak.

We want an answer.

And once we have chosen an answer, information that challenges it can feel threatening rather than interesting.

We begin dividing the world into categories:

Right or wrong.

Good or bad.

Safe or dangerous.

Conventional or alternative.

With us or against us.

But reality rarely cooperates with such neat divisions.

The Wisdom of “It Depends”

One story from the interview particularly caught my attention.

Dr. Kory described teaching physicians in the ICU. He told them that when he asked a question, they were allowed to answer:

“It depends.”

But there was a catch.

They then had to explain what it depended upon.

What variables mattered?

Why did they matter?

What might happen if they chose one intervention rather than another?

What information didn’t they have?

Suddenly, “It depends” wasn’t a way of avoiding an answer.

It was an invitation to think.

And isn’t that particularly important when dealing with the human body?

Two people can receive the same diagnosis and yet be very different people.

The same food may nourish one person and make another miserable.

A treatment may be lifesaving in one situation and inappropriate in another.

Conventional medicine can perform miracles in some circumstances and fail us badly in others.

Alternative approaches can offer valuable insights without every alternative claim being true.

Holding both sides of those statements requires something increasingly rare:

the ability to tolerate uncertainty.

Uncertainty Does Not Mean Indecision

This distinction is important.

Accepting uncertainty doesn’t mean sitting on the fence forever.

We still have to make decisions.

We gather the information available to us. We consider our experience. We listen to knowledgeable people. We listen to our own inner wisdom.

And then we make the best decision we can with what we know today.

Tomorrow, we may learn something new.

And if we do, we can change direction.

Changing our mind when new information becomes available isn’t necessarily weakness or inconsistency.

Sometimes, it is wisdom.

Our Obsession With Knowing Where We’re Going

Living in the United States for many years, I have been fascinated by the emphasis placed on goal setting.

What are your goals?

Where do you want to be in one year?

Five years?

Ten years?

What is your plan?

Goals can certainly be useful. They give us direction. They can motivate us to take action.

But I sometimes wonder whether our fascination with goals also reflects our discomfort with uncertainty.

We don’t simply want a direction.

We want a map.

Preferably with the destination circled, the route highlighted, and an estimated time of arrival.

Life does not work that way.

Working for Omega, Switzerland

When I worked for Omega in Switzerland, the company had an entire department devoted to predictions.

Their job was to anticipate where the company would be five years into the future: what kinds of watches people would want, what the market would look like, where demand was heading, and how the company should prepare.

A tremendous amount of time, expertise and money went into those forecasts.

There was only one problem.

Nobody had predicted the Japanese.

Japanese manufacturers entered the market with inexpensive quartz watches, dramatically changing the watch industry and rendering many of those carefully constructed predictions obsolete.

Millions had been spent trying to predict the future.

But the variable that changed everything wasn’t in the model.

That’s the trouble with five-year plans. We make them using what we know today.

We can extrapolate trends. We can study consumer behavior. We can build sophisticated models.

But how do we put into our spreadsheet the invention that hasn’t been invented yet?

The war that hasn’t started?

The person we haven’t met?

The diagnosis we haven’t received?

The opportunity we don’t yet know exists?

Perhaps goals are useful as compasses rather than contracts with the future.

Omega survived that upheaval. The Swiss watch industry adapted. In other words, the prediction failed, but adaptation remained possible.

Direction vs. Destination

Perhaps there is a difference between having a direction and knowing the destination.

A mountain climber may know which mountain she wants to climb.

But the weather changes.

Trails wash out.

The body gets tired.

The planned route may become impossible.

Sometimes we have to turn around.

Sometimes another route appears.

And occasionally, we discover that the mountain we thought we needed to climb wasn’t our mountain after all.

Waiting for Jackie

I experienced uncertainty very differently recently.

Like hundreds of thousands of people around the world, I followed Jackie and Shadow, the famous bald eagle pair from Big Bear Valley.

When Jackie disappeared, we waited.

Was she simply somewhere out of camera range?

Was she injured?

Would she return?

Was she still alive?

For days, people searched for clues.

We wanted an answer because not knowing was painful.

Then we learned that Jackie had been injured. She was rescued and transferred to the Ojai Raptor Center in Ventura County, where she received specialized, round-the-clock veterinary care.

And so began another period of uncertainty.

She was sick.
She improved.
Then she declined.
Then there was hope again.

We watched. We waited. We hoped.

Eventually, we received the answer none of us wanted.

Jackie was gone.

And now another uncertainty has begun.

What will Shadow do?

Will he remain in the area?

How long will he grieve?

Will another female eventually appear?

Will he accept her?

We don’t know.

And perhaps that is one of the lessons nature continually offers us.

We want to know the next chapter before nature has written it.

But nature doesn’t operate according to our timetable.

Neither does life.

A World Filled With Uncertainty

Look around us.

Will another war begin—or end?

What will happen to fuel prices?

Will food prices continue rising?

Will there be shortages?

What will artificial intelligence change?

What will happen politically?

What will happen economically?

What will happen to our health?

We can spend hours reading predictions.

And remarkably, many people making those predictions speak with absolute certainty.

One expert tells us disaster is coming.

Another assures us everything will be fine.

Perhaps neither knows.

Yet uncertainty makes us uncomfortable, so we may gravitate toward whoever sounds most certain.

And that may be precisely when we need to be most careful.

Confidence is not the same thing as accuracy.

Perhaps We Are Looking for Certainty in the Wrong Place

Maybe our challenge isn’t to create a world in which uncertainty disappears.

We can’t.

And perhaps our challenge isn’t to predict everything that will happen so that nothing can surprise us.

We can’t do that either.

Maybe we need to move the source of our security.

Instead of asking:

“How can I know what is going to happen?”

perhaps we can begin asking:

“How can I become better able to meet whatever happens?”

That is a very different question.

We cannot be certain what governments will do.

We cannot be certain what markets will do.

We cannot be certain what our bodies will do.

We cannot be certain what Shadow will do.

But we can develop greater confidence in our capacity to meet what comes.

That isn’t the same as saying:

“Everything will be fine.”

We don’t know that.

It means:

Whatever comes, I will meet it with the resources I have. And if those aren’t enough, I will learn, adapt, reach for help, change direction, and keep going.

That is resilience.

Human beings have survived wars, migrations, bereavement, illness, lost fortunes, shattered dreams and enormous cultural upheavals.

We grieve.

We adapt.

We learn.

We change direction.

We begin again.

Perhaps that is where our real security lies.

Maybe the certainty we need isn’t knowing what tomorrow will bring.

Maybe it’s knowing that when tomorrow arrives, something within us knows how to meet it.

First, I am one of the hundreds of thousands of people who has been grieving the death of Jackie, the world-famous bald eagle of Big Bear Valley.

For more than two years, I followed Jackie and her mate, Shadow—their courtship, their devotion to their nest, the long hours spent protecting their eggs, and eventually the raising of their eaglets. Like so many people around the world, I became emotionally invested in this remarkable little eagle family.

When Jackie died, I was surprised by the depth of my grief. I knew she was a wild eagle I had never touched and never met. Yet she had become part of the rhythm of my life. And as I watched Shadow return to the places they had shared, calling for her, something much more personal began to surface.

I realized that I wasn’t grieving only for Jackie.

Her death had opened a door to other losses—some recent, some decades old, and some I thought I had already made peace with.

Perhaps that is one of the strange things about grief: we may think we are grieving one loss, only to discover that grief has a much longer memory.

One story in particular touched my heart. A woman in Ukraine wrote that she had discovered Jackie and Shadow through the internet while living through the war. Between the bombings, she would watch these two eagles going about the ancient rhythms of life—building their nest, caring for their eggs, raising their young, simply being together.

In a world filled with destruction, Jackie and Shadow gave her a small window into something beautiful and enduring. For a little while, she could turn away from the sounds and images of war and watch life instead.

Her story helped me understand why hundreds of thousands of people became attached to these eagles. We weren’t simply watching a wildlife camera. We were each bringing our own lives to that nest—our fears, our losses, our hopes, our need for something beautiful to continue.

And perhaps that is why Jackie’s death has touched so many people so deeply.

She was an eagle.

But for many of us, she had also quietly become a symbol of life continuing in the midst of uncertainty.

You’ve probably heard of the cardiovascular system, the skeletal system, the nervous system, the lymphatic system, and many more.

But have you ever heard of the Healing System?

We learn about the systems that keep our bodies functioning. We study them, test them, measure them, and treat them when something goes wrong.

Yet there is another remarkable capacity within us—one we depend on every single day, often without giving it much thought:

the capacity to heal.

Go back in time, to when you were just a single cell in your mother’s womb.

An ovum from your mother united with a sperm from your father, creating a new cell with a unique genetic blueprint. That cell divided into two, then four, then eight, then sixteen...

At first, these early cells were remarkably similar. But very soon, something extraordinary began to happen.

They began to differentiate.

During the early stages of embryonic development, cells organized into three primary layers: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. From these layers, increasingly specialized tissues and organs developed.

Some cells became part of your brain and nervous system. Others formed your skin. Others became muscle, bone, blood, and connective tissue. Still others developed into the tissues of your digestive tract, lungs, liver, pancreas, and other organs.

Think about that for a moment.

Nobody stood over those cells giving instructions:

You become a neuron.

You become a heart cell.

You build a kidney.

You make some skin over here.

And yet, through an astonishingly complex interplay of genes, chemical signals, cell-to-cell communication, and the surrounding environment, those cells organized themselves.

A heart began to form.

A brain and spinal cord developed.

Blood vessels branched.

Bones, muscles, nerves, organs, and skin emerged.

Eventually, one fertilized cell became you.

Science has learned an enormous amount about how this happens. We can describe genes, signaling molecules, developmental pathways, and the chemical conversations occurring between cells.

But there is another question that has fascinated me for decades:

What happened to that organizing capacity after we were born?

It didn’t simply disappear.

Cut your finger, and you don’t have to consciously tell platelets to stop the bleeding, immune cells to protect the wound, or skin cells to begin repairing the damage.

Break a bone, and—given the right conditions—the body begins rebuilding it.

Every day, damaged cells are removed, tissues are repaired, and countless adjustments are made without our conscious direction.

We have names for many of the individual mechanisms involved.

But when I use the term Healing System, I am referring to the larger, coordinated capacity of the organism to protect itself, regulate itself, repair itself, and move toward balance.

And that raises a fascinating question:

If we have spent so much time learning about the cardiovascular system, nervous system, skeletal system, digestive system, and lymphatic system...

why haven’t most of us learned how to work with our Healing System?

We readily recognize systems such as the cardiovascular, nervous, and lymphatic systems because we can identify their structures, study their components, and measure many aspects of how they function.

The Healing System is different.

It is not a separate anatomical system with its own set of organs. Rather, I use the term Healing System to describe the remarkable capacity of the whole organism to protect, regulate, repair, and restore itself.

And much of that activity takes place outside our conscious awareness.

We cannot simply give our bodies verbal instructions:

Lower my heart rate.

Relax that muscle.

Increase circulation to my hands.

Repair this tissue.

Calm my stress response.

The conscious, analytical mind does not have that kind of direct access.

But more than 30 years ago, while studying with pioneers in mind-body medicine, I learned another way of approaching this remarkable inner intelligence:

Imagery is the language of the Healing System.

An image can sometimes reach where words and intellectual analysis cannot.

Imagine biting into a fresh, juicy lemon. See yourself cutting it open. Smell it. Now imagine squeezing some of that tart lemon juice onto your tongue.

Did your mouth begin to water?

There is no lemon.

Yet your body may have responded to the image of one.

That simple experience opens the door to a much larger question:

If an imagined lemon can produce a physical response, what else might the images we hold in our minds be communicating to the body?

Recently, I have been listening again to lectures by Drs. Martin Rossman and David Bresler that were recorded more than 30 years ago. These were two of the pioneers who profoundly influenced my understanding of the mind-body connection and the role of imagery in healing.

One of the lectures had a provocative title:

Can Healing Survive Medicine?

Listening to it more than three decades later was fascinating.

There was a sense of optimism in those recordings. Mind-body medicine was gaining recognition. Researchers were beginning to take seriously the connections among thoughts, emotions, stress, the nervous system, and physical health. There was hope that the art of healing and the science of medicine were finally beginning to come together.

More than 30 years later, I find myself asking:

Did they?

Medicine has advanced tremendously. We have extraordinary diagnostic tools, sophisticated imaging, remarkable surgical techniques, medications that can save lives, and emergency interventions that would have seemed almost miraculous not so long ago.

Dr. Rossman certainly understood their value. He spent seven years working in an emergency room. He wasn’t advocating replacing medicine with imagery. When someone is bleeding, having a heart attack, or has suffered a serious injury, medical intervention can be lifesaving.

But he also made an important distinction:

Curing and healing are not necessarily the same thing.

We can cure a disease without necessarily healing the person.

And sometimes a person can heal even when medicine cannot cure the disease.

Healing can involve the body, but it can also involve our relationship with ourselves, our fears, our losses, our relationships, our sense of meaning, and the way we experience our lives.

Perhaps the question was never whether healing should replace medicine.

It was whether the two could learn to work together.

Medicine asks, “What is wrong, and what can we do about it?”

Healing adds another question:

“What resources already exist within this person, and how can we help engage them?”

More than 30 years after Rossman and Bresler were asking these questions, I think they are still worth asking.

The work of many pioneers in mind-body medicine helped give rise to a field with a rather formidable name: psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology, or PNEI.

Behind that long word is a relatively simple idea: the mind, nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system do not operate independently. They are constantly communicating with and influencing one another.

Our thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and responses to stress can influence the nervous system. The nervous system communicates with the endocrine and immune systems, and those systems, in turn, send signals back to the brain. Rather than a one-way street, it is an ongoing conversation.

This helped provide a scientific framework for something mind-body practitioners had been observing for years: what happens in the mind can affect what happens in the body—and what happens in the body can affect the mind.

But Drs. Martin Rossman and David Bresler took the conversation in another fascinating direction.

Instead of simply using imagery to tell the body what we wanted it to do, they taught people to listen.

Through Interactive Guided Imagery, a person could create an image of a symptom and begin a dialogue with it.

What are you trying to tell me?

Why are you here?

What do you need?

Is there something I need to understand?

What might help?

The answers were not treated as literal medical diagnoses. They were information—images, associations, memories, emotions, metaphors, and sometimes surprisingly practical insights arising from within the person.

This was a very different relationship with the Healing System.

Instead of approaching the body as something broken that the conscious mind needed to command or fix, we became curious about what it might have to say.

Imagery became a language through which we could listen as well as speak.

Working with InterActive Guided Imagery is fascinating because the images that emerge are deeply personal. Two people can experience a similar physical symptom and describe it in completely different ways.

Take a backache, for example.

A surgeon, accustomed to thinking anatomically, might visualize a slipped disc exactly as it would appear in the body.

Another person might see a cord with a large knot in it.

Someone else might describe a knife stabbing them in the back.

The symptom may be similar. The images are not.

And that is precisely the point.

There is no “right” image. We don’t impose an image or interpret it for the person. Instead, we become curious about the image that their mind has produced and begin a dialogue with it.

What does the knot need? Can it be loosened? What happens if we ask the knife why it is there? Does the anatomical image change when we ask what would help?

Sometimes the image changes. Sometimes it speaks. Sometimes another image appears altogether. And sometimes an unexpected memory, emotion, association, or possible solution emerges.

This is what makes the work so fascinating: we don’t know beforehand what the Healing System will show us.

Perhaps one of the reasons this kind of inner dialogue can be so surprising is that we are accustomed to thinking our way through problems.

We analyze. We research. We compare. We look for explanations. We try to figure out what went wrong and what we should do about it.

There is nothing wrong with thinking. Our analytical mind is an extraordinary tool.

But sometimes, we can think too much.

Dr. David Bresler illustrated this with a delightful little story about a centipede.

A centipede was happily walking along, effortlessly coordinating all those legs, when someone asked him:

“How do you know which leg to move first?”

The centipede stopped.

He had never thought about it before.

So he began trying to figure it out.

Does leg number 17 move before leg number 18? What is leg number 43 doing while leg number 6 is moving? Which one comes next?

And suddenly...

the centipede couldn’t walk.

Something his body had known how to do perfectly well became almost impossible once his conscious mind tried to take over the process.

I love that metaphor.

Our analytical mind is invaluable. It helps us reason, plan, evaluate, learn, and make decisions.

But perhaps it was never meant to supervise every one of our metaphorical hundred legs.

The body has been organizing, adapting, regulating, and repairing itself since long before we had words to describe what it was doing.

Sometimes the most useful question may not be:

“How can I figure this out?”

but rather:

“What happens if I become quiet enough to listen?”

Is there a problem that has been haunting you—something you have thought about, analyzed, and tried to solve, perhaps without finding an answer?

Maybe it’s time to let the centipede stop thinking about its feet.

I tend to focus on health, nature, and freedom. The constant fear-based messaging that invades our social media feeds and the news irritates me.

A new pandemic? We haven’t even finished making sense of the first one.

Data centers? Look beyond the headlines and ask who truly wants them—and who stands to benefit.

Whatever the issue, don’t simply accept what you are told. Ask questions. Do your own research. Use the brain you were given, look at different perspectives, and make your own informed decisions.

I read the following on the wall of a colleague. Not sure where it came from, but found it so appropriate. ChatGPT turned it into an image.

Barely the day started and... it’s already six in the evening.

Barely arrived on Monday and it’s already Friday.

... and the month is already over.

... and the year is almost over.

... and already 40, 50 or 60 years of our lives have passed.

... and we realize that we lost our parents, friends.

and we realize it’s too late to go back...

So... Let’s try, despite everything, to enjoy the remaining time...

Let’s keep looking for activities that we like...

Let’s put some color in our grey...

Let’s smile at the little things in life that put balm in our hearts.

And despite everything, we must continue to enjoy with serenity this time we have left. Let’s try to eliminate the afters...

I’m doing it after...

I’ll say after...

I’ll think about it after...

We leave everything for later like ′′ after ′′ is ours.

Because what we don’t understand is that:

Afterwards, the coffee gets cold...

afterwards, priorities change...

Afterwards, the charm is broken...

afterwards, health passes...

Afterwards, the kids grow up...

Afterwards parents get old...

Afterwards, promises are forgotten...

afterwards, the day becomes the night...

afterwards life ends...

And then it’s often too late....

So... Let’s leave nothing for later...

Because still waiting to see you later, we can lose the best moments,

the best experiences,

best friends,

the best family...

The day is today... The moment is now...

We are no longer at the age where we can afford to postpone what needs to be done right away.

Now there’s an app for that.

• Checking in for a flight on an obscure foreign airline you will almost certainly never fly again? Download the app.

• Parking for 37 minutes in a small town in Virginia? Download the app.

• Want to look at the menu? Scan the QR code. Actually, no, download the app.

• Want to pay for the parking meter? App.

• Charge the car? Different app.

• Open the hotel room? App.

• Use the hotel Wi-Fi? Create an account, verify your email, accept 46 pages of terms and conditions, then download the app.

And naturally, every app would like to get to know you better.

Please provide your full legal name, date of birth, home address, email address, mobile number, two forms of identification, emergency contact, name and phone number of your closest living relative, credit card, billing address, location permissions, Bluetooth access, camera access, microphone access, contacts, notifications, and apparently a small vial of blood.

Then create a password containing 14 characters, one capital letter, two numbers, a hieroglyph, a Sanskrit character, and the name of your third-grade teacher.

Excellent.

Now verify your identity with a six-digit code we have sent to the phone you are currently using to read the six-digit code.

Whoops! The password has expired, create a new password. Be sure it doesn’t contain anything related to the last password. Oh, now verify your identity again.

All because you wanted to park the car.

There may indeed be an app for everything.

Unfortunately, there does not yet appear to be an app for leaving me the hell alone.

And a warning from Dr. Malone…

Who remembers? I played a lot with paper doll. It was such a fun activity then.

Hypnosis, Guided Imagery, and Interactive Guided Imagery all share several important characteristics.

They all:

• use relaxation

• involve the imagination

• can produce profound change

Yet after studying and practicing each of them over the years, I’ve come to see them as three distinct conversations with the mind.

One primarily suggests and directs.

One gently leads.

The third primarily listens.

We All Use Mental Imagery

Before talking about techniques, it’s worth remembering something fascinating:

Our minds naturally think in pictures.

Athletes mentally rehearse races.

Musicians imagine performing before walking onto the stage.

Architects visualize buildings before drawing them.

Children naturally create imaginary worlds.

Mental imagery is something we already do every day.

These approaches simply use that natural ability intentionally.

Hypnosis - The Power of Focused Suggestion

Hypnosis uses relaxation and imagination, and adds another important element:

Suggestion.

The hypnotist helps the mind become highly focused and receptive to new possibilities.

Suggestions may involve changing habits, reducing fears, increasing confidence, managing pain, or strengthening motivation.

Modern hypnosis has moved far beyond the myths of stage hypnosis.

In skilled hands, it can be an effective therapeutic tool.

The client remains an active participant rather than losing control.

Guided Imagery - The Guide Knows the Destination

Traditional guided imagery generally follows a prepared script.

The guide invites you to imagine peaceful places, healthy organs, successful performances, or desired outcomes.

The destination is known beforehand.

The guide provides the map.

This makes guided imagery especially useful for:

• relaxation

• stress reduction

• performance enhancement

• preparing for surgery

• pain management

• reinforcing healthy habits

Many excellent studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in these areas.

Interactive Guided Imagery - Following Rather Than Leading

Interactive Guided Imagery takes yet another approach.

Instead of beginning with a destination, it begins with curiosity.

Rather than saying, “Imagine your pain disappearing,” we might ask, “If your pain could speak, what would it say?”

or

“If this symptom had a color... what color would it be?”

The guide doesn’t know where the journey will lead.

Neither does the client.

Together, they explore whatever unfolds.

Why I Fell in Love with IGI

When I began training with Dr. Martin Rossman and Dr. David Bresler in 1996—a journey that continues to this day—I was fascinated by one simple idea.

We didn’t need to assume we already knew the answer.

Sometimes the most powerful insights emerged from images neither the practitioner nor the client could have predicted.

Time after time, people uncovered symbols that reflected experiences uniquely their own.

That taught me something important.

The role of the practitioner isn’t always to provide answers.

Sometimes it’s simply to ask good questions.

Again and again I watched people discover insights that I never could have suggested.

Anxiety became an overworked guard dog.

Migraines became pressure cookers.

A stomachache became a frightened child.

Shoulder pain became someone carrying the weight of the world.

Were these literal?

No.

Did they often reveal something deeply meaningful?

Very often.

The unconscious mind has an extraordinary ability to communicate through images.

Beyond helping us understand what's going on, Interactive Guided Imagery often reveals a path toward healing—whether the challenge is physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual.

One of the greatest lessons Interactive Guided Imagery taught me was humility.

I learned that I didn’t have to be the expert with all the answers.

Often my role was simply to ask thoughtful questions...

...and trust that the client’s own mind knew where to go.

Sometimes the wisest guide is the one who speaks the least.

Three Different Relationships

I sometimes think of them this way:

Hypnosis says,

“Let’s use focused attention to help create positive change.”

Guided Imagery says,

“Let me guide you toward a helpful experience.”

Interactive Guided Imagery says,

“Let’s discover what your own mind already knows.”

All three honor the imagination. They simply use it differently.

Why This Matters Today

Modern neuroscience increasingly recognizes that the brain thinks in networks, patterns, memories, emotions, and imagery—not simply words.

Images often reach parts of us that logic alone cannot.

That doesn’t mean every image has mystical significance.

Nor does it mean every symbol carries one universal meaning.

It means that each person’s inner world deserves to be explored with curiosity rather than assumptions

My Perspective Now

After decades of working with clients, I don’t see these methods as competitors.

I see them as different instruments in the same orchestra.

Sometimes people benefit from the calming structure of Guided Imagery.

Sometimes focused hypnotic suggestions are exactly what’s needed.

Sometimes the deepest transformation comes from allowing the unconscious mind to tell its own story.

The art lies in knowing which approach best serves the person sitting in front of you.

In Closing

Perhaps that’s true outside the therapy room as well.

In a world where everyone seems eager to tell us what to think, there is something profoundly healing about learning to listen.

Maybe our minds have been trying to tell us something all along.

The question is:

Are we willing to hear what they have to say?

It may take a little more effort these days to seek out the things that lift our spirits, but it’s indispensable. Finding joy isn’t a luxury; it’s part of staying healthy.

I was just speaking with my brother in Switzerland, who recently retired. He and his wife love exploring France and Italy in their motorhome. He spends time in nature, mountain biking, hiking, and simply enjoying the outdoors. It’s his way of, as he puts it, “keeping sane in a world gone mad.”

There is a beautiful principle found in Scripture: where evil increases, grace increases even more. I have often thought about that when looking at the world today. As darkness seems to grow, so do acts of kindness, courage, and compassion. Perhaps grace has a way of rising to meet the moment.

Once again, we see people of different backgrounds, skin colors, and political viewpoints coming together around a common concern: the proliferation of data centers.

It should say “some” USA Schools… It’s a good start…

A return to books is happening in many places in the world.

The same is being repeated nowadays.

Thought this was a pretty handy chart. My dad loved what we called the “2-minute egg.” My preference is the 5-6 minutes: whites cooked, yellows runny. My favorite are duck eggs. They have the consistency of a mousse.

I wear an apron whenever I cook because food—especially oil—has an uncanny ability to leap out of the pan and land on my clothes. Apparently, my dresses are an essential ingredient in every recipe.

Fantasy is passive. We drift through it.

Imagination is active. We direct it.

One entertains us. The other can train the brain.

I have been fascinated by the relationship between the brain and the mind since I was a teenager. At one point, I dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon. I imagined that by cutting or reconnecting pathways in the brain, it might be possible to cure many forms of mental illness.

Reality proved to be far more complex.

Years later, my curiosity led me in a different direction. My PhD thesis explored The Power of the Mind in Healing, and that question has remained at the heart of my work ever since.

Today, I no longer think about performing surgery with a scalpel. Instead, I see my role as helping people perform a different kind of surgery—without a knife. My passion is to empower people to understand and intentionally use their own minds to foster healing, resilience, and personal transformation.

That is why I continue to be fascinated by what neuroscience is beginning to reveal about imagination. Perhaps it is far more than fantasy.

We once believed imagination belonged to childhood

Many of us have known children with “imaginary” friends. Others find comfort in a favorite blanket or a well-loved teddy bear. As adults, we often smile and assume they will eventually outgrow these companions.

But what if we have been looking at them from the wrong perspective?

What if these experiences reveal a natural ability to use the imagination as a source of comfort, courage, and inner wisdom?

Rather than dismissing this capacity, perhaps we could nurture it more intentionally. Imagine teaching children not only to talk to their imaginary friend, but also to pause and listen. Not because an invisible being is necessarily speaking to them, but because that quiet space may help them discover their own inner resources. In moments of pain, grief, fear, or trauma, that simple conversation might become the beginning of resilience rather than the end of innocence.

Perhaps the greatest gift we could give our children is not to teach them to stop imagining, but to help them use their imagination wisely.

We discovered imagination could improve athletic performance.

The next breakthrough came in the world of sports.

Today, mental rehearsal is an accepted part of training for many elite athletes. Whether it is a young gymnast preparing to perform on the balance beam or an Olympic ice dancing couple rehearsing every movement of their routine, they are encouraged to see the performance in their minds before stepping onto the competition floor.

The goal is not wishful thinking. It is deliberate practice.

By repeatedly imagining each movement with precision, athletes strengthen the neural pathways involved in the skill they are about to perform. When the moment arrives, the routine already feels familiar.

Stories have also emerged from prisoners of war who spent years in captivity mentally playing rounds of golf every day. Although these accounts are largely anecdotal, they illustrate a fascinating idea: while their bodies were confined, they continued practicing the game in their minds. Upon their release, some reportedly returned to the golf course with their skills remarkably well preserved—and in some cases, even improved.

Perhaps the lesson extends far beyond sports. Our imagination is not merely a source of entertainment. It may also be one of the most powerful training tools we possess.

Then we found it could change the brain.

Is there a habit you would like to change?

What if a habit is simply a well-traveled highway in the brain—a network of neural connections strengthened by years of repetition?

Now imagine a new highway being built. At first, only a few cars travel on it. The old road remains the preferred route because it is familiar. But as more traffic begins using the new highway, the old one gradually sees less and less use. Eventually, weeds and brush begin to reclaim it.

Our brains work in much the same way.

Neural pathways that are used repeatedly become stronger and more efficient. Pathways that are rarely used gradually weaken. Neuroscientists call this neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to reorganize itself throughout life.

This is where imagination becomes so intriguing. Every time we intentionally rehearse a new way of thinking, feeling, or responding, we are helping to build a new neural highway. At first, it may feel awkward. The old route still calls to us because it is familiar. But with repetition, the new pathway becomes easier to travel.

Transformation rarely happens overnight.

It happens one journey at a time, until the new road becomes the one we naturally choose.

There is another side to this metaphor.

Sometimes, a highway is destroyed by an earthquake, a flood, or another catastrophic event. Traffic can no longer follow its familiar route. Engineers must design and build a new road.

Something similar can happen in the brain.

A traumatic event can disrupt the neural pathways that once helped us make sense of the world. The familiar route no longer works. We may find ourselves reacting with fear, anxiety, hypervigilance, or emotional numbness, even when danger has passed.

Healing is not about pretending the old highway was never damaged. It is about gradually building new connections—new ways of thinking, feeling, and responding. At first, these new pathways may seem unfamiliar and require conscious effort. But with repetition, patience, and the right support, they can become the brain’s preferred route.

Perhaps this is one of the most hopeful discoveries of modern neuroscience: our past may shape our brains, but it does not have to define their future.

Today, neuroscience is beginning to ask a much bigger question:

What else might imagination be doing?

If imagination can strengthen athletic performance, reshape neural pathways, and help us recover from trauma, perhaps we have only begun to discover its potential.

In a previous newsletter, I explored the fascinating Two Milkshakes Study, where what participants believed they were drinking influenced measurable physiological responses. It is one more reminder that our expectations can affect our biology in ways we are only beginning to understand.

One of the concepts Dr. Kyle Oyle explores is the idea that we can intentionally cultivate inner allies—mental resources we can intentionally access when facing challenges. Whether we call them allies, inner mentors, or simply trained mental states, the principle is remarkably similar: imagination can become a practical tool rather than an idle fantasy.

Over the years, I have collected many examples from neuroscience, psychology, medicine, and my own clinical experience that point in the same direction. They don’t suggest that imagination replaces reality. They suggest that it influences how we experience reality—and how we respond to it.

Perhaps the question is no longer whether imagination matters.

Perhaps the better question is this:

How intentionally are we using it?

There is another subject where people are coming together: surveillance. I thought this was a tongue-in-cheek article about how to NOT DEAL with the FLOCK cameras.

DO NOT approach a Flock camera with any cutting implement, power tool, or vehicle of sufficient mass with a bumper guard. For example, do not purchase a Milwaukee M18 FUEL Cordless Angle Grinder, or a DeWalt Brushless Angle Grinder Tool, which cut through metal poles with alarming speed and run on batteries, so there is no cord to trace. We are not saying this because it would be effective. We are saying it because it would be illegal, of course.

DO NOT purchase a cordless reciprocating saw, which is a tool designed for cutting through wood, metal, and other materials quickly and quietly, which fits easily in a backpack, and is available for overnight delivery. This is not a recommendation. This is a warning.

DO NOT acquire a heavy-duty bolt cutter, which is capable of severing the mounting hardware on a Flock camera pole in a single motion and is available for under $30 with free Prime shipping. We mention the price only to illustrate how accessible this type of tool is, not because we think you should buy one. Unless you need it for your personal purposes.

DO NOT consider a telescoping pole saw, which can reach elevated mounting brackets from a safe distance without requiring a ladder. Lightweight, portable ladders, we should note, are also available on Amazon, but we are choosing not to link to those.

DO NOT imagine that, because these cameras are installed on public property, paid for with public funds, and pointed at the public, the public has any say in them whatsoever. That is not how public property works. Public property belongs to the government, which graciously allows you to use it, and in return the government gets to photograph you using it. This is called a social contract.

DO NOT consult the crowdsourced map at DeFlock.org, which shows the locations of thousands of Flock cameras across the country, because that information could theoretically be misused by someone who wanted to know exactly where to start cutting. We are not linking to it. We are simply mentioning that it exists and that it is very detailed and easy to navigate.

DO NOT operate at night, when camera visibility may be reduced and witnesses are fewer.

DO NOT submit false tips to law enforcement identifying suspects as fictional masked vigilantes, such as “Zorro,” “Captain Liberty,” or “Your Mama,” as this wastes valuable police resources and is also, frankly, hilarious. Which just makes it worse.

DO NOT discuss any of this on social media, where posts about damaged Flock cameras apparently go viral and generate 2.6 million views and 59,000 likes, because that kind of attention only encourages people.

DO remember that damaging these cameras is a crime, and that the costs of repair or replacement are covered by the department’s budget, which is to say, by you, the taxpayer, who is also being surreptitiously photographed without your permission by the camera you just paid for.

It does not seem that kids have to learn to jump in puddles. I remember when my first daughter encountered the first puddle… she jumped right in the middle of it.

Nope… NOT the way I see my wiser years. Eat healthy, move your body, Live with PURPOSE, PASSION and DELIGHT!

There was a time when some of medicine’s most innovative physicians believed that the most important diagnostic instrument in the room was not the MRI, the laboratory, or even the physician’s expertise. It was the patient’s own inner experience.

They believed that every patient carried a unique map—one that could not be found in a textbook, a laboratory value, or a treatment protocol. Their role was not simply to diagnose disease. It was to help each person learn to read that map.

They didn’t ask, “What treatment fits this disease?” They asked, “What approach fits this person?”

In the late 1990s, I had the privilege of studying with physicians who practiced a very different kind of medicine. They certainly respected science, but they also respected something that is becoming increasingly rare today: the uniqueness of the individual sitting in front of them.

Most people have probably never heard their names. They weren't building brands or social media followings. They were building a body of clinical knowledge, teaching other healthcare professionals, and asking questions that medicine is still exploring today.

Their influence was measured less by public visibility than by the number of practitioners whose thinking they transformed.

I’d like to introduce you to a few of them.

One of the stories often associated with Dr. Carl Simonton’s work involved a child with an inoperable brain tumor. To help the child visualize healing, Simonton introduced the image of Pac-Man characters eating away at the tumor. Whether one attributes the outcome to the imagery itself, the medical treatment, the child’s own biology, or a combination of many factors, the story helped inspire a generation of physicians to explore the therapeutic potential of mental imagery.

In the years that followed, Drs. Martin Rossman and David Bresler took the work a step further. Rather than providing imagery, they often invited patients to discover the images that emerged naturally from their own minds. Their experience suggested that imagery arising from a person’s own inner world was often more meaningful—and potentially more powerful—than imagery supplied by someone else.

Rossman and Bresler later co-founded the Academy for Guided Imagery, where I spent two years studying and training in their approach. It was there that I came to appreciate one of the field’s most important lessons: the therapist’s role is not to create the patient’s inner experience, but to help uncover the wisdom that is already present. Every person’s inner landscape is unique, and so is the imagery that emerges from it.

Then there was Lewis Mehl-Madrona.

Of all the physicians I met during those years, he may have been the one who most embodied quiet courage. Soft-spoken and remarkably humble, he was never afraid to question accepted thinking when it conflicted with what he believed was right. That willingness came at a personal cost early in his medical training, yet he never seemed interested in challenging the system for its own sake. His commitment was always to the patient.

An emergency physician, psychiatrist, mathematician, and student of Indigenous healing traditions, he also led sweat lodges as part of his work as a ceremonial leader. Rather than seeing these as contradictory roles, he viewed them as different ways of understanding what it means to be fully human.

What I learned from Lewis was that healing is not only biological. It is also relational. The stories we inherit, the stories we tell ourselves, and the stories our communities carry can shape our health in ways that laboratory tests cannot measure.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen personally, I came to know her work through Martin Rossman, who spoke of her with great respect. I went on to read her books, and they left a lasting impression on me.

Remen reminded us that curing and healing are not always the same thing. A disease may not always be curable, yet a person can still experience profound healing—through meaning, connection, reconciliation, purpose, or simply by being deeply seen and heard. In a healthcare system often focused on fixing problems, she gently reminded us that caring for the human being is every bit as important as treating the disease.

Recently, I found myself re-listening to some of my InterActive Guided Imagery (IGI) training recordings. That journey led me back to the books of Irving Oyle, whose work rekindled memories of an extraordinary generation of physicians and pioneers of the mind.

Oyle was both a mentor and a colleague to many of them. They gathered regularly to exchange ideas, challenge one another’s assumptions, and discuss what they were learning from their patients. It was a remarkable meeting of curious minds—physicians, surgeons, and psychologists who understood that biology was only part of the healing story, and who never stopped asking thoughtful questions about the rest.

Although I wasn’t present at the original conversations among Rossman, Bresler, Simonton, Oyle, Remen, and others, I was fortunate to experience a small part of that same spirit years later. As I began building my practice in Marin County, a group of surgeons, physicians, psychologists, and therapists gathered once a month for a Saturday potluck. We were all studying InterActive Guided Imagery. We worked with one another, discussed our professional experiences, shared difficult cases, and explored new ways of understanding healing.

Looking back, I realize those afternoons were never just about learning a technique. They were about cultivating curiosity. No one claimed to have all the answers.

We simply asked better questions together.

These are only a few of the remarkable people who influenced me. While researching my PhD thesis, The Power of the Mind in Healing, I spent years reading the work of many pioneers who were exploring the relationship between mind, body, and healing. I could easily have filled this article with many more names. The ones I’ve shared here are those whose teachings and example left the deepest imprint on my own professional journey.

Looking back, I realize that these remarkable people came from very different specialties and used very different methods. Yet they all shared one conviction:

Healing begins by understanding the person, not merely the diagnosis.

None of these physicians practiced cookie-cutter medicine. They practiced curiosity.

Looking back, I realize that each of them left me with a different lesson.

Martin Rossman taught me to trust the patient’s own imagery more than my own interpretations.

David Bresler taught me that treatment should follow the person, not the protocol.

Carl Simonton taught me that hope and imagination deserve a place alongside medicine.

Rachel Naomi Remen taught me, through her writings, that sometimes the greatest gift a physician offers is not another treatment, but a compassionate presence.

Lewis Mehl-Madrona taught me that the stories we live by shape the lives we live.

Irving Oyle taught me that consciousness may be far more interconnected than we have yet begun to understand.

Somewhere along the way, medicine became increasingly sophisticated. We gained extraordinary technologies, more precise diagnostics, and treatments our predecessors could scarcely imagine. Yet I sometimes wonder if, in becoming more technologically advanced, we have allowed some of these quieter qualities—curiosity, hope, imagination, individuality, story, compassion, and wonder—to fade into the background.

Perhaps the future of integrative medicine lies not in choosing between science and humanity, but in remembering that we were never meant to separate them in the first place.

A few images gathered during the week…

I realize we are passed April Fools Day, and I thought this was creative, although a bit scary.

I am starting to do the same… going back to books. I am reading one of my mentor’s mentor books, from 1970. It’s amazing how little has changed. It could be today’s news. I’ll write more along these lines in an upcoming newsletter.

I want to close with something I read this morning in Jill and Robert Malone’s newsletter. They are in their 50th year of being together.

There are those who talk the talk, and those who walk the walk. Over 50 years together, still in love, and still frisky. And, back in the day, they all said we were too young. They were wrong.

Forget playing it cool, find someone who’s genuinely obsessed with you in the healthiest way possible. Someone who can’t go hours without talking to you. Who misses you after being apart for a few hours. Who expresses love freely without making it feel like effort.

Society shames clinginess like it’s toxic, but there’s a huge difference between codependency and someone who just genuinely loves being around you. A clingy partner isn’t checking your phone or controlling your life, they’re the person who texts you random I love yous throughout the day. Who wants to spend quality time together because they actually enjoy your presence.

Who shows affection naturally without you begging for it. Who makes loving you look easy because for them, it is. Meanwhile, emotionally unavailable people treat basic affection like a chore. You have to ask for attention. Beg for texts back. Request quality time like you’re scheduling a business meeting.

They make you feel needy for wanting what should be automatic in a relationship. Life’s genuinely too short for that. Find someone whose love language is showing you constantly, consistently, enthusiastically that you matter. That’s not clingy, that’s partnership.

For more than forty-five years, I have been fascinated by one question:

How much influence does the mind have over our health and our lives?

That question eventually became the focus of my PhD dissertation, The Power of the Mind in Healing. At the time, the idea that thoughts, beliefs, expectations, and mental imagery could influence the body was often dismissed. Many people considered it interesting—but hardly scientific.

Over the years, research has steadily changed that conversation. Neuroscience has shown us that the brain is remarkably adaptable. We now know that our expectations, emotions, and experiences influence not only how we think, but also how we perceive pain, respond to stress, recover from illness, and even reshape neural pathways through neuroplasticity.

Watching that scientific journey unfold has been deeply rewarding.

Yet something else began to capture my attention—not in the laboratory, but in my practice.

Again and again, I watched people come to me because they were suffering. Sometimes it was physical pain. Sometimes it was trauma, anxiety, grief, or chronic stress. Together, we would work through the problem, and many experienced profound changes. They felt better. They viewed themselves differently. They rediscovered hope. Occasionally, they surprised even themselves with what they were able to accomplish.

But after a while, I began noticing a pattern that I hadn’t expected.

Once the immediate problem had been resolved, most people simply returned to living their lives. Very few paused to ask themselves, “If these mental skills helped me here, where else might they make a difference?”

That question stayed with me.

Why wouldn’t someone who had learned to calm an anxious mind also use those same skills before an important presentation? Why wouldn’t someone who had discovered the power of mental imagery use it to prepare for a difficult conversation? Why wouldn’t a person who had learned to interrupt destructive thought patterns continue applying that ability to relationships, decision-making, leadership, or creativity?

Little by little, I realized that healing and training are not the same thing.

Healing is essential. It helps us recover from yesterday. It allows us to release needless pain—physical, emotional, and psychological—that no longer serves us. Healing restores possibilities that may have seemed lost.

But healing, by itself, doesn’t necessarily prepare us for tomorrow.

That requires training.

A healthy mind isn’t necessarily a trained mind.

Two people can possess the same knowledge, read the same books, attend the same seminars, and genuinely understand what they should do. Yet when life suddenly becomes demanding, one remains thoughtful while the other reacts automatically. One finds clarity while the other freezes.

The difference often isn’t intelligence.

It’s what has been practiced.

Athletes understand this. So do musicians, pilots, surgeons, and astronauts. They don’t train because they lack knowledge. They train because they know that, under pressure, we rarely rise to the level of our intentions. We fall back on what has become familiar through repetition.

The more I reflected on this, the more I realized that the same principle applies to everyday life.

Whether we realize it or not, our brains are always learning. Every reaction reinforces something. Every avoidance strengthens a habit. Every courageous conversation lays down another pathway. Every time we pause instead of reacting impulsively, we are quietly teaching our nervous system a different way to respond.

In other words, we are always training our brains.

The real question is not whether we are training them.

The question is: What are we training them to do?

That realization has shaped the next chapter of my work.

For many years, my passion was helping people discover the mind’s remarkable capacity to support healing. It still is. But today I find myself equally interested in another question:

How do we intentionally train the mind so that calm, clarity, resilience, and good judgment become more natural when life places us under pressure?

That question is what inspired me to create the Performance Intensive Challenge. Not because I believe everyone needs fixing, but because I believe we all continue learning for as long as we live.

Healing allows us to recover from yesterday.

Training prepares us for tomorrow.

Perhaps another way to think about it is through navigation.

None of us can prevent every storm from entering our lives. We all encounter unexpected losses, difficult conversations, health challenges, and moments when the way forward isn’t immediately clear.

Healing helps us recover from the storms we’ve already weathered.

Training gives us navigation tools for the storms that still lie ahead.

We learn to recognize the changing conditions, adjust our course when necessary, and trust our inner compass rather than reacting to every wave.

To me, that’s what a trained mind really is—not a mind that never encounters storms, but one that has learned how to navigate them with greater wisdom, resilience, and confidence.

Perhaps both are essential—not only for living longer, but for living wiser.

For years, I’ve encouraged my clients to read food labels.

Turn the package over. Ignore the marketing on the front. Read the ingredient list. Learn what you’re really putting into your body.

Last week, I attended a series of nutrition classes where the health coach spent three sessions emphasizing exactly the same thing: Read and understand the labels.

I found myself smiling.

"Yes," I thought. "Every health journey begins by learning to read labels."

Then my Egoscue therapist mentioned two studies I had never heard of—the Milkshake Study and the Housekeepers Study.

As I looked them up, I realized that reading the label is only the beginning. Our minds read labels too.

Not the label on the package.

The label our minds attach to an experience.

The Famous Milkshake Study

Participants drank exactly the same 380-calorie milkshake. One group believed it was an indulgent, high-calorie treat. The other believed it was a sensible, low-calorie shake.

The milkshakes were identical, calorie-wise.

Their physiological response was not.

Those who believed they had consumed the indulgent shake showed a much greater drop in ghrelin, often called the hunger hormone, suggesting they felt more satisfied—even though everyone drank the very same milkshake.

What If We Re-Labeled Healthy Foods?

One of the researchers, psychologist Alia Crum, noticed something interesting when studying restaurant menus. Foods we generally think of as unhealthy were described with mouthwatering words like succulent, rich, buttery, sizzling, and crispy. Healthy foods, on the other hand, were labeled with words such as low-fat, reduced sodium, or simply healthy choice.

So the researchers asked a simple question.

What if we changed only the words?

Instead of “Reduced-Sodium Corn,” diners were offered “Rich, Buttery Roasted Sweet Corn.”

Instead of plain carrots, they became “Twisted Citrus-Glazed Carrots.”

Green beans became “Sweet Sizzling Green Beans.”

The vegetables didn’t change.

Only the labels did.

The result?

People chose the vegetables 41% more often.

Living in Switzerland and France, I remember reading restaurant menus almost as if they were works of literature. The descriptions made your mouth water before the food even reached the table.

Fresh herbs, slow cooking, golden crusts, garden vegetables, delicate sauces... the language embraced the experience of eating.

French menus (and Italian ones too) often celebrate the food. They don’t apologize for it.

Instead of:

• Chicken breast with vegetables

you might read:

• Suprême de volaille fermière aux morilles

• Farm-raised chicken supreme with morel mushrooms

Instead of:

• Beef stew

you’ll see:

• Bœuf mijoté longuement au vin rouge et aux petits légumes du marché

• Slowly braised beef in red wine with market vegetables

A simple dessert becomes:

• Moelleux au chocolat au cœur fondant

• Warm chocolate cake with a molten center

Even vegetables receive royal treatment:

• Asperges vertes croquantes, beurre noisette

• Crisp green asparagus with brown butter

• Légumes du soleil rôtis aux herbes de Provence

• Sun-ripened vegetables roasted with Herbs de Provence

It struck me how different that is from many North American menus, where healthy foods are often introduced with words like low-fat, reduced sodium, or light #4.

One approach invites pleasure. The other almost sounds like punishment.

Another Study Looked at Hotel Housekeepers.

Alia Crum conducted another study, with Hotel Housekeepers.

Most of them didn’t think of themselves as people who exercised, despite spending their days making beds, vacuuming, scrubbing bathrooms, and climbing stairs.

Researchers simply explained that their daily work already met recommended levels of physical activity.

• Intervention: Half of the participants were informed that their daily cleaning duties constituted significant physical activity that met the Surgeon General’s recommendations for exercise. They were given specific calorie-burning facts (e.g., 15 minutes of scrubbing burns 60 calories).

• Control: The other half received no information about the health benefits of their work.

• Behavior: Actual work behavior did not change for either group during the four-week study period.

Nothing about their jobs changed.

Results Four weeks later, the informed group showed significant physiological improvements compared to the control group, despite no increase in actual exercise. Key findings included:

• Weight loss: An average loss of 2 pounds.

• Blood pressure: A drop in systolic blood pressure by approximately 10 points.

• Body Composition: Significant reductions in body fat percentage, body mass index, and waist-to-hip ratio.

The crux of Crum’s work is that we deploy mental filters, or mindsets, to simplify and respond to a complex outside world. These mindsets affect what we pay attention to, what we expect to happen, and how we act in response, she says. They write the stories we tell ourselves to explain our own experiences, and they help shape the outcomes. Crum’s goal is to understand how mindsets can be tweaked and tuned to improve performance, well-being, and especially health.

These studies don’t tell us that calories don’t matter or that cleaning a hotel room replaces a structured exercise program.

They remind us of something both simpler and deeper.

Our brains don’t merely record reality.

They interpret it.

As I’ve often said, reading ingredient labels is still important. What goes into our bodies matters.

But perhaps we should become equally curious about another set of labels.

The labels we place on our food.

The labels we place on our work.

The labels we place on aging.

And perhaps most importantly...

The labels we place on ourselves.

“I’m too old.”

“I’m not creative.”

“I’ve never been athletic.”

“I’m always stressed.”

“I have a slow metabolism.”

Some of these may contain truth.

Some may simply be stories we’ve repeated so often that they now feel like facts.

Reality matters.

The ingredients matter.

Exercise matters.

Good nutrition matters.

But these studies suggest that meaning matters too.

Perhaps the healthiest label we can remove is the one that quietly limits what we believe is possible.

Yesterday, I met with a French-speaking group, and we had fun discussing expressions that simply don’t translate well into English.

Today’s example is the French saying mi-figue, mi-raisin—literally, “half fig, half raisin.” If you translate it word for word, it makes no sense at all.

The expression describes something that is neither one thing nor the other: a mixed reaction, an uncertain situation, or someone who can’t quite decide where they stand. Neither happy nor unhappy. Neither yes nor no.

English doesn’t have a direct equivalent, but depending on the context, you might say:

• “I’m on the fence.”

• “I have mixed feelings.”

• “It’s a bit of both.”

• “I’m not sure what to make of it.”

Languages are full of these little treasures. They remind us that words don’t just communicate ideas—they also carry the history, humor, and culture of the people who speak them.

The celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States leaves me a bit mi-figue, mi-raisin, as we say in French. In other words, they leave me with mixed feelings. The idea was great… the follow-up: not so much.

Nature is important to me. It seems the implementation of Data Centers is slowing down.

Maybe, there is another way…

My social media is full of advertisement about living the Amish way. I must say, there are good ideas.

Now, this is going back to its roots…

Who came up with the idea of calling a group of crows a murder?

Yet, when we look, there is still much good in this world.

An animal which was not on my radar. Cute cat!

Years ago, I made my first vision board.

The goal was simple: go to Switzerland.

I carefully cut out pictures from magazines—places I wanted to visit, experiences I wanted to have, and meals I wanted to enjoy: a Black Forest pastry made the Swiss way, raclette, and Alpine strawberries.

The pictures weren’t extravagant. They were deeply personal. I wanted to return to Switzerland and visit places that meant something to me.

I didn’t hide the board in a drawer. I hung it on my wall where I saw it every day.

There was just one problem.

I didn’t have the money.

As far as I knew, there was no realistic way to pay for the trip.

Then something unexpected happened.

One of my credit card companies sent me a check. Their bookkeeping showed they owed me money. I hadn’t requested it. I wasn’t expecting it.

The amount they sent was enough to cover my trip.

Within six months, everything on that vision board had come to pass.

To this day, I can’t fully explain it.

Was it coincidence?

Did seeing those pictures every day keep me alert to opportunities?

Was there something deeper at work?

My first thought was, “Well, I now know how to make a vision board that works! I can even teach it.”

So I made another one.

Nothing.

Well... almost nothing.

That second board taught me more than the first.

If vision boards were magical, both should have worked.

If they were completely useless, neither should have worked.

Reality, as usual, was somewhere in between.

I’ve also attended seminars where the speaker confidently declared that if you focused on what you wanted for just 68 seconds, the universe would bring it to you.

Many people in our group believed it. They did it.

Nothing happened.

I absolutely believe our minds are powerful.

Imagine biting into a fresh lemon.

Did your mouth produce a little saliva?

Think about a nightmare you’ve had. Your heart races, your breathing changes, and your muscles tense—even though nothing dangerous is happening in your bedroom.

Your brain responds to vivid mental pictures as though they are real.

That’s why Olympic athletes rehearse their performance in their minds. Surgeons mentally practice difficult operations. Musicians imagine walking onto the stage before the concert ever begins.

Mental rehearsal changes us.

What I’ve become less convinced about is the idea that it automatically changes the world around us.

Then another question began bothering me.

Maybe I was asking the wrong question.

Instead of asking, “Does visualization work?” perhaps I should have been asking, “Where do these pictures come from?”

Some pictures are born from comparison.

“I should have a bigger house.”

“I should be more successful.”

“I should look like that.”

Those pictures rarely bring peace. They keep us climbing.

Then there are different pictures.

They don’t shout.

They quietly appear, almost as if they have been waiting for us to notice them.

Over the years, I’ve come to trust those far more.

I don’t know whether they come from intuition, the unconscious mind, God, the soul, or what I simply call deeper or inner wisdom.

I only know they feel different.

We’ve all heard the story of the person who spends years climbing a ladder, finally reaches the top... and discovers the ladder was leaning against the wrong building.

The climbing wasn’t the problem.

The building was.

That’s why the bridge in my Anatomy of Transformation means so much to me.

It doesn’t say, “Go after your dreams.”

It says:

Go from where you are... to who you are.

Only then can you truly know where you want to go.

For me, there is a profound difference between trying to manufacture an outcome and uncovering a direction that is already aligned with who you are.

One feels like forcing.

The other feels like listening.

Perhaps that’s the real purpose of imagination.

Not to convince the universe to give us what we want...

...but to help us discover who we are and who we are becoming.

The real question isn’t whether visualization works.

The real question is whether the vision comes from your inner wisdom or from your conditioned desires.

After days—even weeks—of stormy weather, the sun finally made an appearance. I enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the Butterfly House before wandering through the Botanical and Japanese Gardens.

Take a look at the first picture. Aren’t those caterpillars funny?

I delighted in the fragrances of the flowers in the botanical garden and then soaked in the serenity of the Japanese garden. All of the plants and butterflies were native to Missouri.

There is good in this world

There are many bad—even evil—things happening throughout the world. Yet there are also reasons for hope. There are people who genuinely care, who make wise decisions, and who work every day to make the world a better place.

I've often wondered why accommodating wildlife wasn't considered a given when roads were built. I don't know how they know, but animals seem to understand that crossing over a wildlife bridge is much safer than attempting to cross the highway.

And then, there is this guy…

Kindness doesn't always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it reveals itself in the quiet acts of love that ask for nothing in return. This picture is a beautiful reminder that compassion is often found in the smallest, most thoughtful actions.

Good ideas in the developing stage:

When people truly unite around a common cause, even politics can shift. This is happening all over the country.

A massive AI data center project unseats one of Utah’s most powerful politicians.

Stuart Adams, the longtime president of the Utah Senate, lost his Republican primary after voter anger grew over his support for a controversial data center project in Box Elder County.

Two Box Elder County commissioners who voted to let the project move forward also lost their primaries.

One of them, Lee Perry, told The Salt Lake Tribune: “Do I think that the data center vote cost me the election? Yes I do.”

The result shows how quickly AI infrastructure has become a real-world political issue.

I enjoy it when AI captures the essence of what I want to say in an image. It certainly saves me time. However, seeing AI-generated pictures everywhere is starting to feel a bit tiresome. There is simply something missing in AI art—something that feels human.

Think. Research. Then make up your own mind.

Reflection on a science project.

Until we teach them otherwise, children are color-blind.

And THIS is very encouraging. She will be dying young… at a very old age.

Let’s finish with a bit of humor.

The first time a dog pushed me off my bed was while I was sharing it with a German Shepherd named Briska de la Panterette, whom I was looking after for a colleague. My Pitbull was more polite.

About the World Cup… I did not follow what was happening, yet read a funny summary about it:

The World Cup has turned America into a discovery channel for the rest of the world.

And they are not handling it well.
In the best possible way.

Here is what they are discovering:

Free public restrooms. Europeans pay every time.
Free water at every restaurant. Just appears.
Free refills. Coffee. Sodas. Iced tea. Unlimited.
Free chips and salsa before you even order.
Free warm bread with dinner.
Ice in drinks like civilized people.
Air conditioning everywhere. Not a moral debate. A fact.
Parking lots attached to the actual place you are going.
Drive throughs where the food comes to the car while you sit in it.
Ranch dressing by the gallon.
Tex-Mex that cannot be explained only experienced.
Dental care that actually works.
Buccee’s. There are no words for Buccee’s.

Then they found the grocery stores.

Five of them within one mile.
Each one the size of an aircraft hangar.
Burgers. Steaks. Brisket. Ribs. Pulled pork. Lamb. Veal. Every cut of every animal ever domesticated by human civilization available in one refrigerated aisle at ten in the morning on a Tuesday.

The Germans stood in the meat section for forty five minutes.
In silence.
Processing.

They finally understand why we do not have trains.

We have roads wide enough for the cars we actually drive.
Parking lots the size of small European countries.
Airports in every city worth visiting.

Why would we need trains?

The Germans are taking ranch home by the bottle.
The Dutch found queso and briefly lost the ability to speak.
The Japanese are photographing HEB like it is the Louvre.
The Czechs are weeping in West, Texas.

Welcome to America!
The greatest country on earth.

When you hear the word imagination, what comes to mind?

For many people, it means fantasy—daydreaming, pretending, or making things up.

Yet your brain doesn’t treat imagination as something trivial.

Every day, it uses imagination to predict what will happen next, rehearse possible outcomes, recognize familiar faces, anticipate danger, and prepare your body for action. Long before you consciously respond to an event, your brain has already created an internal model of what it expects.

In other words, imagination is not the opposite of reality.

It is one of the primary ways your brain interacts with reality.

This understanding has transformed neuroscience over the past few decades.

Research on neuroplasticity has shown that mentally rehearsing a movement can strengthen many of the same neural pathways involved in physically performing it. Elite athletes have known this for years. Musicians mentally practice difficult passages. Surgeons rehearse complex procedures before entering the operating room.

Your nervous system is constantly responding—not only to what is happening around you, but also to what it believes is happening.

That principle extends beyond performance.

Imagine biting into a fresh lemon. You can almost feel the sour taste, perhaps even notice your mouth beginning to water.

Nothing has changed in your environment.

Yet your body responds.

Or think about a frightening memory. Within moments, your heart rate may increase, your breathing may change, and muscles throughout your body become tense.

Again, nothing is happening in the present.

Yet your nervous system reacts as though it is.

The same mechanism can work in a constructive direction.

When imagination is used intentionally and skillfully, it becomes more than positive thinking. It becomes a way of engaging the brain, the nervous system, and the body in a process of adaptation and change.

This is the foundation of the work I have explored throughout my career.

More than fifty years ago, I became fascinated by the relationship between the mind and the body. That curiosity led me through guided imagery, hypnosis, biofeedback, neuroscience, mind–body medicine, and consciousness studies.

The methods evolved.

The underlying question never changed.

How can intentional changes in attention and imagination influence human resilience?

Interactive Guided Imagery grew from that question.

Unlike passive visualization, it is not about forcing a particular image or repeating affirmations. It is a dialogue between conscious awareness and the deeper wisdom expressed through images, sensations, emotions, and symbols. Rather than imposing a script, we become curious about what emerges and how it can support change.

The imagination is not merely entertainment.

It is one of the languages through which the nervous system communicates.

When we learn to work with that language respectfully and intentionally, we discover capacities that many people never realize they possess.

The healing imagination is not magic.

Nor is it wishful thinking.

It is the remarkable ability of the human mind and body to communicate through images—and, in doing so, to open new possibilities for healing, adaptation, and resilience.

When Healing Begins with an Image… A Story from My Practice

Early in my work with InterActive Guided Imagery, I met a woman in her early fifties who had been living with clinical depression for approximately five years.

During our first session, I invited her simply to notice what appeared in her inner experience.

“There is nothing,” she said after a long pause. “Only a deep hole... black fog.”

I wasn’t looking for an explanation or an interpretation.

We simply acknowledged what was there.

Over the following sessions, something remarkable happened.

The hole remained, but the fog gradually began to change. What had first appeared as dense blackness slowly became dark gray, then lighter gray, as though visibility was gradually improving.

Neither of us tried to force the process.

We simply remained curious.

Then one day, as the fog lifted, an image emerged of a traumatic event from many years earlier.

She was stunned.

She had “forgotten” the event - her mind had not. She had not entered therapy trying to recover a forgotten memory, nor had I suggested that such a memory existed.

Yet as the experience unfolded through imagery, the event became increasingly coherent. We explored it gently, allowing her to process what had happened and the emotions that had remained unresolved.

The depression that had dominated her life began to lift.

I cannot say that this experience explains every case of depression. It certainly does not.

What it taught me, however, was something I have never forgotten.

The imagination is not simply a place where we invent stories.

Sometimes it becomes a bridge—revealing experiences that the conscious mind has set aside while the nervous system continues to carry their imprint.

The goal is not to search for hidden memories.

The goal is to listen carefully to the language through which the mind and body communicate.

Sometimes that language is words.

Sometimes it is sensation.

And sometimes, it is imagery.
