Every penis sent a jolt down my spine and they just kept appearing. My friend thought it would be fun to chat with the people of Omegle while we carved patterns on coconut shell cups.

Omegle is a live-streaming app where you are basically FaceTiming with a bunch of different strangers for a few seconds at a time. Obviously, a lot of exhibitionist fetishists love this app.

Apart from them, we met a group of friends designing big plumes of smoke from their mods while listening to trap. Swipe. We told a middle aged man that “somos lesbianas,” and he asked us to prove it. Swipe. We said “kon'nichiwa” to a stunning couple and their friend in Japan. Swipe. I was informed that “white girls like you are crazy” by a white man because I had the top half of my hair braided. Swipe.

And finally, we connected with a boy in a room with tall cream colored walls and a blue bedspread peeking out from the side of the screen. He was playing video games. His eyes were focused on the game, but he asked me questions.

“Hi, how are you?”

“I’m doing well. I’m making art with my friend. How are you?”

“Oh, that sounds really nice, hanging out with your friend. I’m alone playing video games.”

“That sounds fun. What game are you playing?”

I don’t remember what game he was playing, and I’m forgetting some more of the conversation, but eventually he said,

“Can I ask how old you are?”

“I’m 26. How old are you?”

“I’m 16.”

I tilted my head back, laughing. “I’m so old!”

He smiled. He made some nervous mutterings and then uttered, “I guess it’s strange if I told you that you’re really pretty then.”

“Thank you. Of course you can tell me pretty. Always feel free to tell a woman she is pretty.” At least in the way that you just said it, I didn’t add.

He smiled, but his eyes stayed glued to the video games.

“I hope you have an amazing rest of your day. I bet you are going to make a girl very happy someday. Good bye.”

“Bye.”

Swipe. The next screen was a chode.

Recibí un susto repentino cada 10 segundos porque aparecía un pene. Mi amiga pensó que sería divertido hablar con la gente de Omegle mientras tallábamos diseños en las tazas de cáscara de coco para su cliente.

Para aquellos que no saben, Omegle es una aplicación de live streaming donde, básicamente, tú estás en videollamada con extraños por unos segunditos. Claro que a muchos fetichistas exhibicionistas les encanta la app. 

Aparte de ellos, conocimos a un grupo de jóvenes que hacían grandes nubes de humo con sus vapores y escuchaban trap. Swipeamos. Le dijimos a un tipo que éramos lesbianas, y now pidió que lo probáramos. Swipeamos. Dijimos “kon’nichiwa” a una pareja bellísima y su amigo en Japón. Swipeamos. Alguien me dijo, “Chicas blancas como tú son locas,” porque tenía trenzas. Swipeamos.

Eventualmente, nos conectamos con un chico que jugaba videojuegos en una habitación con paredes altas y de color crema. Sus ojos estaban enfocados en el juego, pero me hacía preguntas.

“Hola, ¿Cómo estás?”

“Estoy muy bien. Estoy haciendo arte con mi amiga. ¿Cómo estás?”

“Oh, qué lindo, pasar tiempo con tu amiga. Yo estoy solo jugando videojuegos.”

“Eso suena divertido. ¿Qué juego?”

No recuerdo qué juegojugaba, y olvidé otras partes de la conversación, pero eventualmente me preguntó,

“¿Cuántos años tienes?”

“Tengo veintiséis, ¿y tú?”

“Tengo dieciséis.”

Incliné la cabeza hacia atrás y me reí. “¡Soy vieja!”

Él sonrió. Murmuró algo y dijo con aprensión, “Supongo que es raro que te diga que tú eres bella, entonces.” 

“Muchas gracias. Claro que tú puedes decir que soy linda. Siempre siéntete libre de decir a una mujer que ella es bella.” Al menos, está bien decirlo de la manera en que tú lo acabas de decir, pero eso no se lo dije. 

Él sonrió, pero sus ojos quedaron pegados a su videojuego.

“Espero que tengas un lindo resto del día. Apuesto a que algún día harás feliz a una chica. Bye bye.”

“Bye bye.”

Swipeamos. La próxima era un bicho.

A long, long time ago, I went on an adventure to Norway with my best friends and Roman. For a week, we shivered down dark, empty Oslo sidewalks, pondered slate grey mountains looming over frigid fjords, dusted 7-11 ice cream with hot cocoa powder, and chased the northern lights down frozen streets in a rental car. I get disappointed about that trip only when I remember we never saw the Northern Lights, and Roman had become public enemy no. one.

Roman earned the hate. He broke the Airbnb dryer, defended sexist claims, and only carried an American Express card, which, shocker, did not work in Europe. He racked up over $400 in debt to my friend, which ended up taking him six months to pay back. I also could have sworn that he wore his hiking boots without socks, but my friends told me that I made this up.

A certified fact about Roman is that he showered two to three times every day. It was the dead of winter in Norway, and we engaged in zero physical activity the entire trip. Despite this, we’d wait 20 minutes on the Airbnb couch for him to shower before dinner. We’d come back home, and he’d shower again. I’d have to lie in bed in the mornings holding my pee because, of course, Roman was washing his balls.

We joked that he was taking showers simply to escape us. Or, dirty-minded peeps know what our next joke was.

It’s been seven years, and those jokes have grown stale, but it did dawn on me recently that I shower two to three times every single day. After about 5 hours of simmering in the Caribbean air, my balls also crave a splash of cold water. Plus, everyone showers. It is much more taboo to smell bad in the DR than it is in the States. I’ll be damned if I become nicknamed The Smelly American.

Given how often I’m showering, my collection of shower thoughts is burgeoning. Amongst these thoughts is the hunch that Roman’s demanding shower schedule was probably cultural. He is Hispanic and was raised in South Florida, so maybe he was showering for similar reasons to mine in the DR.

I can’t confirm this because I never asked him: “Why do you shower so often?” It’s a rather simple question, so why didn’t I ask it?

Probably, I was having too much fun laughing about it with my friends to pause to ask him.

If I met Roman today, I guarantee I would have asked. If a Dominican does something I don’t understand, I simply inquire:

Why do you wear a sweatshirt in the heat? Why do you listen to your music so loudly? Why do you not drink water during lunch? Why do you put so much sugar in your coffee?

In return, I hear:

Daniela, why do you run 10 miles outside in the heat? Why do you lie in the sun? Why don’t you have a husband? Why do you put ice in your coffee?

I, like them, am unable to give completely sensible answers for any of these questions because there are many layers of culture informing these decisions.

When I asked my friend, “Why do Dominicans eat hot soup for breakfast?” she laughed.

When I told my neighbor that “I allow my cat to sleep in my bed,” she gave me a look of horror. I laughed.

Maybe, if I had asked Roman, “Why do you shower so frequently?” he would have laughed and been in on the joke too.

Hace mucho, mucho tiempo, fui de aventura a Noruega con mis mejores amigos y Roman. Durante una semana, temblamos en las calles vacías y oscuras de Oslo, meditamos en las montañas grises de pizarra que dominaban los fiordos gélidos, espolvoreamos helado de 7-11 con cacao y perseguimos las auroras boreales en calles congeladas en un carro alquilado. Me siento decepcionada con este viaje solamente cuando recuerdo que nunca vimos las auroras boreales y cómo Roman se había convertido en el enemigo público número uno.

Roman se ganó el odio. Rompió la secadora del Airbnb, defendió reclamos sexistas y solamente llevó una tarjeta de American Express, que, sorpresa, no funciona en Europa. Le acumuló más de $400 en deudas con mi amiga, que él le pagó seis meses después. También, creo que usó sus botas sin medias, pero mis amigos dicen que me lo inventé.

Sin embargo, un hecho comprobado sobre Roman es que él se duchaba dos o tres veces cada día. Era pleno invierno en Noruega y no hicimos ni un chin de ejercicio el viaje entero. A pesar de esto, esperamos 20 minutos en el sofá del Airbnb para que él pudiera ducharse antes de cenar. Llegamos a la casa y él se duchó de nuevo. Tuve que acostarme en la cama y aguantarme las ganas de orina cada mañana porque, por supuesto, Roman estaba lavándose los cojones.

Bromeamos con que él se duchó para escaparse de nosotros. O, las mentes sucias saben que era la próxima broma.

Han pasado siete años, y estas bromas son viejas, pero me di cuenta el otro día de que ahora, soy la que se ducha dos o tres veces cada día. Después de cinco horas sudando en el aire del Caribe, los cojones míos desean un chin de agua fría. Además, es mucho más tabú oler mal en el RD que en EEUU. No quiero el apodo La Gringa Baja.

Teniendo en cuenta que me ducho mucho ahora, mi repertorio de pensamientos de ducha está creciendo. Entre los pensamientos está la sospecha de que la cantidad de duchas de Roman era cultural. Él es hispano y se crió en el sur de Florida, así que es posible que se duchara por las mismas razones que yo en la República Dominicana.

Realmente, yo no sé. Nunca le pregunté: “¿Por qué te duchas tanto?” Era una pregunta bastante simple. ¿Por qué no lo pregunté?

Probablemente, estaba demasiado ocupada riéndome con mis amigos para considerar preguntar.

Si conociera a Roman hoy, te garantizo que le habría preguntado. Todos los días, un dominicano hace algo que no entiendo. Pregunto,

¿Por qué llevas una sudadera en el calor? ¿Por qué escuchas la música tan alto? ¿Por qué no tomas agua durante el almuerzo? ¿Por qué echas muchísimo azúcar en el café?

En cambio, escucho,

Daniela, ¿por qué corres 20 kilómetros en el calor? ¿Por qué te bañas en el sol? ¿Por qué no comes mucho arroz? ¿Por qué pones hielo en tu café?

Yo, igual que ellos, no puedo responder con una respuesta completamente sana porque hay muchos niveles culturales que informan estas decisiones.

Cuando le pregunté a mi amiga, “¿Por qué los dominicanos comen sopa caliente para desayunar?” Ella se rió.

Cuando le dije a mi vecina que “permito que mi gato duerma conmigo,” ella me dio una mirada de horror. Sonrié.

Posiblemente, si le hubiera preguntado a Roman, “¿Por qué te duchas tan frecuentemente?”. Se reiría y se habría entrado en la broma con nosotros.

Despite majorly associating the Fourth with a cacophony of screaming children at church parties, grown adults choking on glizzies, and a creeping case of itch butt because I felt a patriotic duty to wear my too-tight denim shorts, I obviously associate the Fourth of July with freedom.

In a conversation with my Dominican friend, she mentioned, “The Dominican Republic is more free than the United States.”

I paused. In some ways, she was absolutely correct:

• In the DR, you can feel the ocean breeze run through your hair from the back of a pickup truck. In the States, you’d likely be riding the whole way home squished in a backseat between your brother, cousin, and a fat fine.

• Here, you can operate a nail salon or cafeteria in your home without ever reporting it to the government.

• One of the most distinctly Dominican freedoms: blast your music as loud as your heart desires.

• If you want to sip that beer on the sidewalk, the police are only going to give you an eye of jealousy.

• In a small town, you can even send your kid to pick up a bottle of rum from the grocery store. An American parent would be immediately investigated by CPS!

  

I encounter these scenarios daily in the DR, but when I fact-checked myself to see if they were actually legal, I learned that exactly none of them are legal!

I wracked my brain to think of comparable legal infractions that we let slide in America and ultimately only found a few: driving 5 over on the interstate, jaywalking, drinking with your parents as a minor. These infractions are acceptable in the DR too.

Why is America, the ‘Land of the Free,’ less free in these ways than the DR?

In the DR, I’ve noticed that people just have a higher risk tolerance. It’s normal for a two-year-old to stand squished in the leg room of a vespa between his mom’s thighs. It’s normal for a light socket to spit sparks occasionally.

These things would not be tolerated in the States, maybe because we just have more spare time on our hands to care about these things,

I used to get a kick out of stalking my hometown’s “Friends of Dexter” Facebook page where housewives would complain about “this teen driver with a football team bumper sticker was speeding on Dexter-Ann Arbor road at 6 PM on Tuesday” or “Has anyone else noticed the giant inflatable in front of the Methodist church? It looks dangerously close to the powerline and needs to be removed IMO!!!”

Although it’s slightly ludicrous to monitor other people in this way, there is something honorable about these extra precautions Americans take to protect their communities.

As societies, we must curtail our freedom to protect ourselves and our people. But at what point are we restricting our freedom too much? At what point are we not protecting our people enough?

Tengo algo buenísimo para que leas con esa resaca.

¡Feliz Cuarto de Julio tardío, mi gente estadounidense! Nunca me gustaba mucho el Cuatro de Julio porque nadie nunca me invitó a su barco, aparte de ti, Rachel Wittenburg. Todavía eso es el mejor Cuatro de Julio de mi vida entera.

A pesar de que asocio el Cuarto principalmente con una cacofonía de muchachos bullosos en los coros de la iglesia, gente grande se ahogan las salchichas, y un culo que pica más y más porque sentí la obligacion patriotica de poner mis jeans cortos bien apretados, obviamente, asocio el Cuatro de Julio con libertad.

Durante una conversación con mi amiga dominicana, ella dijo, “La República Dominicana es más libre que los Estados Unidos.”

Educada en los Estados Unidos, siempre creí que los Estados Unidos era el país más libre en el mundo. Nosotros definimos “libertad” con la Declaración de Independencia en el año 1776 y abrimos el camino para que muchos otros países lo siguieran.

Pero pausé. En algunos aspectos, ella era absolutamente correcta:

• En RD, puedes sentir la brisa oceánica en tu cabello sentado en la cama de la camioneta. Allá, estarías montando en una silla entre tu hermano, tu primo y una multa gorda.

• Tú puedes operar un salón de uñas o cafetería en el garaje sin reportarlo al gobierno.

• Una de las libertades más dominicanas: pon tu música tan alta como te dé la gana.

• Oh sí, si quieres tomar tu cerveza por la acera, la policía solamente te da un mirado de envidia.

• En el campo, puedes mandar a su hijo al colmado para buscar una botella de ron. Un padre estadounidense sería investigado por los servicios de protección infantil inmediatamente.

¡Encuentro estos escanerios a diario en RD, pero cuando busqué en el internet si son realmente legales, aprendí que exactamente cero son legales!

Le di muchas vueltas pensando en infracciones legales similares que no nos importan en EE. EEUU, pero al final, y al final solamente encontré algunas: manejar más de 5 mph aquí en la carretera, cruzar la calle fuera del paso peatonal, tomar con tus padres cuando eres menor. Estas infracciones son aceptables en la República también.

¿Por qué los Estados Unidos, la ‘tierra de los libres’, son menos libres que RD en estas maneras?

En RD, me di cuenta de que la gente tiene una tolerancia al riesgo más alta que en EE. UU. Es normal que un niño de dos años se pare en la pasarela entre las piernas de su mamá. Es normal que una portalámpara escupe chispas de vez en cuando.

Estas cosas no serían toleradas en los Estados Unidos, posiblemente porque tenemos más tiempo libre para importar estas cosas.

Antes me daba muchísima risa meterme a stalkear el grupo de Facebook “Friends of Dexter” de mi pueblo. Las amas de casa se quejaban de cosas como: “Un adolescente iba a exceso de velocidad por Dexter-Ann Arbor Road el martes a las 6 de la tarde”, o “¿Alguien más ha visto el inflable gigante que pusieron frente a la iglesia metodista? ¡En mi opinión, está peligrosamente cerca del tendido eléctrico y deberían quitarlo!”

A pesar de que es bastante ridículo monitorear a otras personas de esta manera, hay algo honorable sobre las precauciones que los americanos toman para proteger sus comunidades.

Como sociedades, tenemos que sacrificar parte de nuestras libertades para proteger a nosotros mismos y a nuestra gente. ¿Pero en qué momento restringimos nuestra libertad tanto? ¿En qué momento no protegemos a nuestra gente lo suficiente?

“No,” I assume you are American.

“Yes,” I assume you are Dominican. 

These topics do not provoke societal fear in the Dominican Republic.

To persuade my fellow Americans to be more Dominican, I will explain how conversations about RACE, RELIGION, POLITICS, MONEY, and PHYSICAL APPEARANCE have profoundly changed my life for the better.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE: As the only white American in most rooms, I’m typically referred to as “gringa” or “rubia.” This is an incredibly efficient way to decipher when I am being beckoned. If you do not know someone’s name and there is one glaringly obvious fact that sets them apart from the rest, why would you not call them by said feature? Saludos to all of the rubios, morenos, flacos, gordos, chinos, and chiquitos of Latin America.

POLITICS: Obviously, we talk about Donald Trump. His policies have helped the Guy-at-the-River’s businesses grow. Several men in town admire his commanding presence. Recent comments have been more aligned with my neighbor’s statement: Trump is committing evil acts. A fellow teacher remarked that he is void of love and hungry only for power. By listening to these sentiments, unadulterated by the American news cycle, I better understand the ripple American politics create from one coast to another.

RACE: Three short weeks after working at the high school, I sat down in the teachers’ lounge a few seats away from a colleague I hadn't fully met yet. 20 minutes later, he inquired, “Daniela, do you think Dominicans are racist?” I felt compelled to return the earnestness in his voice. So, I claimed that “Yes, I do believe many Dominicans are racist.” After 10 minutes of contentious banter, we peacefully landed on the thought that many Americans and Dominicans are racist and xenophobic in their own alarming ways. 

MONEY: Money remains a touchy topic for me. However, according to many curious sources, my rent is at a “good price” and my salary is lower than one might assume. 

My conversations regarding money frequently lead to dialog on building wealth vs. enjoying life. These conversations serve as landmarks pointing me toward balance in a landscape where extremity is pervasive. 

RELIGION: Neighbors, colleagues, little kids, taxi drivers, all with one crucial question: “Do you believe in God?” This used to send a wave of agnostic panic through my body, but the onslaught of questions eventually pushed me to truly consider my beliefs. Last month, a group of students asked me if I believed in God. I answered, “Yes.” They probed, “How sure are you?” “100% sure, there is no doubt.”

SUMMARY: Set free from the gag of the taboo, one may accidentally communicate more efficiently, diversify understanding, foster transparency, and sharpen their beliefs. 

Of course, all of what I write is waxed in presumptuous cultural stereotypes and caveats, but I would be greedy to exhaust the topic. Instead, I'll leave you with two simple questions:

If you’re American, will you dare to mention religion to your next Trader Joe's cashier?

If you're Dominican, did I get this right?

HABLAMOS DE TABúS

Dinero, religión, políticas, raza, y aperiencia física. ¿Debería mencionar estos temas a un extraño a tu lado en la guagua?

“No,” Supongo que eres estadounidense.

“Sí,” Supongo que eres dominicano.

ADVERTENCIA: En los Estados Unidos, estos temas son conocidos por causar que los ojos se muevan y las gargantas se cierren. Tienes que sacrificar un momento de silencio antes de que alguien pueda cambiar el tema a películas y comida. 

Estos temas no provocan miedo societal en la República Dominicana.

Para persuadir a mis amigos americanos de ser más dominicanos voy a  explorar como conversaciones sobre APARIENCIA FÍSICA, POLÍTICAS, RAZA, DINERO, y RELIGIÓN han cambiado mi vida profundamente.

APARIENCIA FÍSICA: Como la única blanca americana en la mayoría de lugares, típicamente me llaman “gringa” o “rubia.” Es un método muy efectivo para llamar la atención rápidamente. Si no conoces a alguien y hay un hecho muy obvio sobre esta persona, ¿por qué no los llamarías por su característica? Saludos para todos los rubios, morenos, flacos, gordos, chinos y chiquitos en las Américas latinas.

POLÍTICAS: Obvio que hablamos de Donald Trump. Sus políticas han ayudado a crecer los negocios del Hombre-del-Río. Varios hombres en el pueblo dicen que admiran su presencia imponente. Comentarios recientes han estado más alineados con la declaración de un vecino: Donald Trump está haciendo acciones malvadas. Un maestro observó que estaba vacío de amor y solamente buscó poder. Cuando escuché estos comentarios, entendí mejor el efecto dominó de los políticos estadounidenses por todo el mundo. 

RAZA: Tres semanas cortas después de empezar mi trabajo en el liceo, me senté en el aula de maestros cerca de un maestro que casi no conocía. 20 minutos después, me preguntó, “Daniela, ¿piensas que los dominicanos son racistas?” Me sentí obligada a reflejar la seriedad en su voz. “Sí, creo que hay muchos dominicanos racistas.” Después de una conversación contenciosa, llegamos pacíficamente a la idea de que muchos dominicanos y americanos son racistas y xenófobos a su manera.

DINERO: El dinero sigue siendo un tema sensible para mi. Todavía, muchas personas curiosas me dijeron que mi apartamento es “un buen precio” y gano menos de lo que pensaban. Con frecuencia, mis conversaciones se convierten en conversaciones sobre la compensación entre ganar dinero y disfrutar la vida. A veces, parece imposible tener los dos, pero estas conversaciones son puntos de referencia que me guían hacia el balance.

RELIGIÓN: Vecinos, colegas, niños, choferes, todos con una pregunta crucial: ¿Crees en dios? Esto solía recorrer mi cuerpo como una oleada de pánico agnóstico, pero, con el tiempo, la avalancha de preguntas me llevó a reflexionar verdaderamente sobre mis creencias. El mes pasado, un grupo de estudiantes me preguntó. “Daniela, ¿crees en dios?” Dije que “Sí.” Me preguntaron, “Qué segura estás?” “Al 100%, no hay duda.”

RESUMEN: libres de la mordaza del tabú, sin querer, uno podría comunicarse de manera más efectiva, diversificar entendimiento, fomentar la transparencia, y afinar sus creencias. 

Pero claro, todo lo que escribo está limitado por las advertencias y presuntuosos estereotipos culturales, pero sería una avaricia agotar el tema. En cambio, les dejaré dos preguntas simples:

Si eres americano, ¿Te atreverás a mencionar religión al próximo cajero en Trader Joes?

Si eres dominicano, ¿entendí el tema bien? 

However, I had a revelation in August during my English club’s end-of-summer party. I thought it would be fun to share a little American culture: avocado toast, french toast, and iced coffee.

I told them many times, don’t stress your parents out, we’ll have plenty of American food, only bring something if you really, really want to, and your parents say it’s okay.

The response was an epic trio of dramatic, like, “Oh Daniela, don’t you worry about us, we will be bringing something.”

My five elementary-aged students managed to exceed all expectations when they carried in three tin trays of domplíns, mangu, salami frito, huevos fritos, and aguacate. My mouth was watering so much. F avocado toast.

We got the party started, and because I made a giant pitcher of iced coffee for children, things got… energetic.

One student spilled a full cup of juice over the classroom floor. I pass my napkin and search my bag for more paper towels. With a paper towel in hand, I turn back around to see her wring out the napkin into the empty cup and reusing it to mop up more juice.

With my fat roll of paper towel in hand, I gave her a cheek-to-cheek grin, and she returned one to me.

I thought to myself, I have been humbled. This is my official apology for being chore-arrogant.

Durante mi niñez, secretamente me relamía pensando que yo era mejor que mis compañeros porque sabía hacer muchas tareas de la casa: lavar la ropa, pasar la aspiradora, fregar el baño, etc. Si creciste con padres que trabajaban toda la semana, quizá puedas identificarte.

Los niños (especialmente las niñas) me han humillado.

Tuve esta revelación en agosto, durante la fiesta de fin de verano de mi club de inglés. Pensé que sería divertido compartir un poco de la cultura americana: avocado toast, french toast y café con hielo.

Les dije muchas veces: no estresen a sus padres porque voy a tener mucha comida americana. Solo traigan algo si de verdad quieren y si sus padres dicen que está bien.

La respuesta fue un trío épico de asentimientos con la cabeza, ojos en blanco y sonrisas desdentadas, como diciendo: “Daniela, no te preocupes, vamos a cocinar.”

Mis cinco estudiantes de primaria superaron todas mis expectativas cuando llegaron con tres platos de domplín, mangú, salami frito, huevos fritos y aguacate. Se me hizo agua la boca. Olvidé el avocado toast.

Estábamos compartiendo y, como les hice un vaso grande de café con hielo a los niños, la fiesta estaba… energética.

Un estudiante derramó un vaso de jugo en el piso. Le di mi servilleta y fui a buscar más en mi mochila. Con las servilletas en la mano, me giré hacia mi estudiante y vi que ella estaba retorciendo la primera servilleta dentro del vaso vacío y reutilizándola para limpiar más jugo.

Con las manos ocopadas con un montón de papel, le di una gran sonrisa, y ella me devolvió otra.

If you’re reading this, I probably think about you all the time. I picture my mom’s turquoise veins weaving across the tops of her hands, my brother’s expression if I left the cupboard open by half an inch, and my friends’ ugly-laughing over cheap wine.

I was sprawled out on my sofa, flipping through these memories like 1960s film slides, when my new friend, Lidia, invited me to church. It’s difficult to pause the movie in my mind, but there’s no remedy for homesickness like saying, “yes.”

So, I dragged myself, limb by limb, to my clothes rack. Skirts and shirts, colors and patterns, my eyes floated over the rack until they landed on a memory from my pre-teen years…

I’m in a plush, upholstered pew in an atrium the size of a basketball court. I peer at the adults around me to discover nearly every mouth limply opening and closing during “How Great Is Our God.”

That’s the moment I realized most people painstakingly pretended to sing every Sunday.

There would be no lip syncing tonight.

I giggled to myself, tugged the brown-and-white polka-dot dress over my head, and bounded out the door toward Lidia.

Darkness had driven away day, but heat lingered. Lidia and I laughed at the sweat beads that kept rolling down our faces as we trekked to the edge of town. Behind seagrape and palm leaves, a whitewashed cinderblock building emerged.

Inside, clapping, singing, and smiling burst out of the eight short pews. I spied a man tap the sleeve of his wife’s pink blouse. She tossed him a flirty smile and tapped back.

Oddly, the scene reminded me of something I’d found on my nights out dancing with friends: unapologetic glee.

The pastor drew us to his message as he began to preach alongside the instrumental. He asked God to give us the strength to live without fear or “sin miedo.”

My arms lifted in agreement.

He clasped the hands of a young mother and asked God to bless her. She squeezed her wet eyes shut and started shaking.

The pastor invited the Holy Spirit into other peoples’ bodies, and we watched them tremble.

Swiftly, the pastor turned in my direction and said, “Her.” My eyes darted over my shoulder, but his gaze was on me.

He gestured to the woman in the pink blouse to touch me, and she blinked, “Her?” “Yes.” My stomach flipped, but I extended my hands. After all, the message was “sin miedo.”

The woman in the pink blouse put her palm over my heart. I held my free hand to the crest of my belly, and we continued like this.

When she noticed my hand on my stomach, she shifted her hand from my heart to the top of mine.

I closed my eyes and heard a room of other people crying out in song. The heat of our voices escaped through the windows. The imprint of her thin fingers felt a little like home.

Puedo ver cómo sus venas azules se mueven por el dorso de su mano. Puedo imaginar la mirada exacta de mi hermano si dejara el gabinete un poco abierto. Y tengo el sonido en mi mente de mis amigos riendo del peor chiste del mundo.

Estos momentos se proyectan en mi mente como una película de los años 60.

La añoranza, para mí, se siente un poco como este video del suave zumbido que hacen las jirafas que se hacen durante la noche. Los dos son suaves, constantes pero dolorosamente tristes.

Estaba acostada en mi sofá pensando en todo esto cuando mi nueva amiga, Lidia, me invitó a la iglesia. No hay mejor remedio para la nostalgia que un “sí”.

Me levanté, pierna por pierna, brazo por brazo.

Unos segundos después, estoy frente a mi clóset: ¿falda casual y blusa? ¿Pantalones formales? ¿Vestido suduroso? ¿Un top coqueto?

Mi mente giraba entre colores y patrones, hasta que aterrizó en un recuerdo una memoria de mis años preadolescentes.

Estoy en un banco acolchado en una iglesia del tamaño de una cancha de baloncesto. Miro a las adultos a mi lado y descubro que casi todas las bocas abren y cierran sin emitir sonido durante la canción “Lo grande que es nuestro Dios”.

Ese es el momento en que comprendí que la mayoría de la gente fingía cantar cada domingo.

Pero esa noche no habría fingido.

Escuché la voz de Lidia desde afuera del apartamento, me puse el vestido de lunares marrón y blanco, y bajé las escaleras corriendo para encontrarme con ella.

Estaba oscuro, pero el calor del día persistía. Reíamos por las marcas de sudor que se extendían por nuestra piel mientras caminábamos hacia el borde del pueblo. Al doblar la esquina, apareció un edificio de bloques, cubierto de pintura blanca. Ventajas sin bares invitaban a la brisa del bosque tropical vecino a entrar.

Nos recibieron a la iglesia para cantos, aplausos, balanceos y sonrisas que explotaban en los ocho bancos cortos. Durante el camino a los asientos, nos detuvimos a darnos la mano, besarnos en las mejillas y abrazar casi a todos. Sentada detrás de una pareja, noté que el caballero se tocaba la manga rosada de su esposa. Ella le dio una sonrisa chula y se tocaba su hombro también. Un joven de unos 20 años, con sus Jordans y pantalones blancos recién planchados, bailaba por todo el salón.

Curiosamente, algo me recordó la forma en que yo bailaba durante una noche saliendo con mis amigas, aunque aquí prohibas las acciones indebidas, cambiabas los controles y parlantes por la güira y tambora… y encendías la luz.

Qué puedo decir, me enamoré de un lugar lleno de música buena y gente divertida.

Después de treinta minutos de música, el pastor comenzó a predicar sobre los instrumentos. Pidió a Dios la fortaleza para vivir sin miedo.

Levanté mis manos en señal de acuerdo.

Cuando el pastor entra en ese momento, su trabajo es invitar al Espíritu Santo a quien llama. Sostuvo las manos de una joven madre y pidió a Dios que la bendijera. Ella cerró los ojos húmedos y comenzó a temblar. El pastor continuó moviéndose, colocando sus manos sobre varios otros miembros de la congregación.

De repente, me miró y dijo, “ella.” Mis ojos miraron por encima del hombro. Estaba mirándome. Él pidió a la mujer en la blusa rosa que me tocara, y ella parpadeó, ¿Ella?” “Sí.” Mi estómago dio un vuelco. Aun así, le ofrecí mis manos, porque estábamos “sin miedo.”

This is why I’m blessed that he took me under his wing during my apartment hunt.

Together, he on his moto and I trailing behind on my bicycle, would roll up to a random house and he’d shout: “¡Marialeyne! ¡Estoy aquí con alguien para alquilar!”. Front gates would swing open to reveal something unexpected.

A sun-soaked yellow ranch with an indoor and outdoor kitchen, a turquoise second-story apartment with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, or a fading pink colmado that the owner assured me could be converted into a house.

We visited over 10 places, nearly scraping the bottom of the rental unit pot. None of them had what I was looking for.

One evening, I followed Teo past motos and cars, front porches and kids throwing baseballs, when he cut his engine right in front of the house of The Most Evil Dog In Town.

I thought to myself, no damn way I am living here with this bony mutt. She deploys all 30 pounds of her body to bark at passersby like an automatic rifle with bodily autonomy.

I actually had been avoiding this dog and her entire street for three months. I’d also been holding a grudge against her because she guards the bottom of the only hill in town, which I wanted to use for my marathon training.

My bones rattled for every bark she heaved. However, there is no normal way to say that I was too scared of the mutt to continue, so I had to go on the apartment tour. I mustered courage by imagining Teo and the owner taking her down as she bit my ass, and crept past with my eyes on her pointy little teeth.

We enter the apartment, and much to my regret, it’s The Apartment. It’s the concón in the pot of apartments here. A fully furnished one-bedroom with a rare breeze that runs from the back porch all the way through the kitchen, living room, and into the beautifully tiled veranda.

Later that evening, I regretted the words that came out of my mouth next, but I told the owner I’d love to live there.

Fuck.

The next day, I approach the apartment to sign some paperwork, and, shocker, someone is aggressively barking two feet away from me.

“SALINNNN estoy aquííííííííííí,” I called the owner outside to rescue me and rubbed my sweaty palms across my unbitten ass.

Salin informed me that her name is Kiwi.

I see how her eyes match the golden brown peel of a kiwi.

I tilted my head.

She tilted her head.

The barking ceased.

I slipped past her and the front gate.

Kiwi still barks at every. single. living. thing. But not me.

Now she runs up and down the street in joy when she sees me, and melts into a puddle when I scratch her little head. I like to watch her eyes close in purr.

Now, I sleep safe and sound with The Best Guard Dog Ever, aka, Kiwi.

Teo celebró sus cincuenta años con un coro entero, incluyendo un freezer lleno de vestidas de novia, un karaoke y un ciclo interminable de gente. Eso es Teo, él es muy sociable.

Su personalidad le conviene a su trabajo porque Teo ayuda a la gente a vender de todo. Casas en alquiler, solares, motos, sofás, licuadoras, las mejores empanadas del pueblo, Teo lo sabe todo.

Por eso me siento bendecida, él me enseñó todo durante mi cacería de apartamento.

Juntos, él en su moto y yo, detrás en mi bicicleta, llegábamos a una casa cualquiera y él gritaba: “¡Marialeyne! ¡Estoy aquí con alguien para alquilar!”. Las puertas se abrían y revelaban algo inesperado. Una casa amarilla empapada del sol con espejos del piso al techo, o un colmado rosado desvanecido que el dueño me aseguraba que podía convertirse en vivienda.

Visitamos más de diez lugares y casi rascamos el fondo del caldero de los alquileres. Ninguno tenía lo que yo estaba buscando.

Una tarde, yo seguí a Teo entre motos y yipetas, salones y muchachos jugando pelota, cuando hasta que parqueó su moto directamente frente a la casa de La Perra Más Malvado del Pueblo.

Pensé para mis adentros, sin duda, no voy a vivir aquí con esa perra flaca. Ella desplegó sus treinta libras de su cuerpo para ladrar a la gente como un rifle automático.

Por eso, evité esa perra y su cuadra entera durante tres meses. Para colmo, me quedé sin entrenar en la única loma del pueblo, porque era la que ella custodiaba, y justo esa loma yo quería usar para mis entrenamientos del maratón.

Mis huesos temblaban con cada ladrido que salía de su boca. Pero no había manera decente de decir que estaba tan astusada para darme por vencida, así que me dejé guiar por la búsqueda del apartamento.

Encontré coraje imaginando a Teo y al dueño peleando con la perra, por si acaso me mordía, y la pasé de largo con mis ojos fijos en sus dientes afilados.

Entramos al apartamento, y para mi sorpresa, era El Apartamento. El concón del caldero de los alquileres. Una habitación, mueblada, con una brisa que entraba por el porche trasero, atravesaba la cocina, la sala y terminaba en un salón muy lindo.

Más tarde esa noche me arrepentí de abrir la boca, pero ya le había dicho al dueño: “Quisiera vivir aquí.”

Mierda.

Al día siguiente llegué al apartamento para firmar papeles, y, sorpresa, alguien estaba ladrando muy agresivamente a un metro de distancia

“SALINNNN estoy aquííííííííííí,” grité, llamando para que me rescatara y frotaba las manos sudorosas en el pantalón sin que me mordieran.

Salin me dijo que su nombre era Kiwi.

Vi cómo sus ojos parecían la morrón dorada de una cascada de un kiwi.

Nos miramos a los ojos.

Incliné mi cabeza.

Inclinó la suya.

Los ladridos pararon.

Pasé junto a ella y crucé la puerta.

Todavía Kiwi ladra a cada. ser. vivo. Pero no a mí.

Ahora corre arriba y abajo de la calle con gozo cuando me ve, y ella se derrite en un charquito cuando le rasco su cabecita. Me encanta verla cerrar los ojos de satisfacción,

If that sentence was a lot, then you know exactly how I feel.

I’m trapped on this bus, worrying about that sentence, and then I notice the Bachata the chofer is playing. I see a woman tapping her finger on the window to the beat of the song, and a little boy humming along. I hear two women laughing a few seats back, and they ease my nerves.

The public bus system here is really quite remarkable because it reaches nearly every nook and cranny of the Dominican Republic. Here are a few novelties about the system…

• You won't find a “guagua map” online, but any local will have the details you need.

• The chofer will let you off the bus exactly where you ask. How? Just ask, “¿Chofer, dejame aquí, por favor?”

• You might not find a seat, but you will find a spot. You might be perched on a suitcase or the lap of your cousin, because in the guagua? We are all fam.

• If you decide to buy some dulce de leche from a vendor through the window, feel free to share! The gift will be appreciated.

• Guaguas double as delivery trucks, kind of like Dominican Amazon (not owned by Bezos.) One time, there was a bed and a washing machine delivery. The order took forever to unload, but the woman receiving it had such a darling smile, I didn’t mind waiting.

The guagua system isn’t all smiles and rainbows. Take the time I said goodbye to my first host family with tears smeared across my face. The neighbor drove me to the side of the highway to help me flag down one of the many guaguas in camino to Azua, the province where I now live.

After only five minutes of staring at the windshields of the passing buses, we saw a laminated piece of paper with a bright blue font that read “AZUA.” With three flicks of his wrist, my neighbor successfully hailed my ride home. We speed-walked our way up the shoulder of the highway. I hopped on the guagua to find that my spot wasn’t a seat, but rather a sliver of aisle squashed between the cobrador and another gentleman. I stood there with my weekend bag for nearly 2 hours. I distracted myself by reading “Love is Blind” subtitles off of someone’s laptop and counting… 43 people on a 30-person bus!

Everyone was hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable, but we were making it work.

Eventually, the man standing next to me asked the cobrador if he could be dropped off at the hospital. The cobrador said “no,” and that was the final straw for everyone. “That’s so wrong that you wouldn’t drop him off at the hospital!” “He probably has an emergency!” “You need to stop for this man!” Everyone chimed in with their two cents.

In the end, we did stop at the hospital to let the gentleman off. I’ll never know why he needed to go to the hospital or why the cobrador initially refused… but I’ll always remember the bus full of hot and uncomfortable people using their pent-up irritation like armour to defend a gentleman in need.

I suppose the real novelty of the Dominican guagua system lies in how it transforms a random group of people into a community.

Estoy en una guaguita hacia Azua para luego tomar otra guagua hasta Santo Domingo, donde me espera un expreso de Caribe Tours rumbo a Samaná, para montar otra guaguita hasta Las Galera, y de ahí una caminata de 15 minutos hasta el apartamiento donde mis mejores amigas del Cuerpo de Paz me esperan tranquilamente con abrazos, besos, y un puesto en la piscina.

Si esa oración te pareció larga, entonces entiendes exactamente cómo me sentía yo.

Estoy atrapada en esta guagua, pensando en esa oración, cuando empiezo a notar la bachata que pone el chofer. Veo a una señora marcando el pulso con el dedo en la ventana, un muchacho tarareando la melodía. Dos mujeres se ríen unas filas atrás, y se me van calmando los nervios.

El sistema de autobuses públicos en la República Dominicana es impresionante. Llega a casi todos los rincones del país. Aquí están algunas novedades del sistema…

• No encontrarás un “mapa de las guaguas” en internet, pero cualquier persona local te puede explicar la ruta.

• El chofer te deja exactamente donde le pidas. ¿Cómo? Solo dile, “¿Chofer, déjame aquí, por favor?”

• Tal vez no encuentres asiento, pero sí encontrarás espacio. Podrías ir sentada sobre una moleta compartiendo lugar con un primo, porque, ¿en la guagua? Todos somos familia.

• Si compras un dulce de leche por la ventaja, podrías compartirlo! A la gente le encanta ese gesto.

• Las guaguas hacen entregas, como una especie de Amazon dominicana (aunque sin Bezos). Una vez, vi bajar una cama y una lavadora. Se tardaron bastante, pero la sonrisa de la señora que lo recibió hizo valer la pena.

Por supuesto, no todo son sonrisas y arcorisises. Recuerdo la vez que me despedí llorando de mi primera familia anfitriona. Un vecino me llevó a la carretera para ayudarme a parar una de las muchas guaguas en camino que van hacia Azua, la provincia donde vivo ahora.

Después de solamente cinco minutos de mirando a las parabrisas de las guaguas hecho de paso, vimos una hoja laminada con las letras de un azul brillante que leía “AZUA.” Con el movimiento de su muñeca, mi vecino paró la guagua. Caminamos rápido arriba la carretera. Yo monté la guagua y descubrí que mi lugar no era una silla, sino un chin de pasillo entre el cobrador y otro caballero. Aguanté allá con mi mochila grande casi dos horas. Me distraje mi mente con los subtítulos de “Love is Blind” de la computadora de alguien y calculé… 43 personas dentro de una guagua de 30 sillas!

Todo el mundo estaba caliente, sudoroso, y descomido, pero todo bien.

Eventualmente, el hombre a mi lado preguntó al cobrador si él podría desmontar para el hospital. El cobrador dijo “no,” y esta fue la gota que colmó el vaso.

"¡Qué mal que no lo haría en el hospital!" "¡Seguro que tiene una emergencia!" "¡Tienes que parar por este hombre!" Todos aportaron su granito de arena.

Por fin, nos paramos al hospital para dejar el caballero. No lo sabré porque él necesita ir al hospital o porque refugió al cobrador al principio… pero siempre recordaré una guagua llena de gente caliente e incómoda lista para usar su energía para defender a un caballero necesitado.

Supongo que la novedad de las guaguas Dominicanas es cómo transformar un grupo de extraños en una comunidad.

Realization: mistakes aren’t that bad when they drop you into an unexpected adventure… Like three cups of wine deep at a pool party, or staring through puffy steam into a bowl of cow liver soup, which was surprisingly delectable.

The best mistake I ever made scored me a new group of friends with the neighborhood kids.

The day I moved into her home, Rosa graciously gave me her last name: Daniela de la Rosa, and introduced me to the family and neighbors as her “hija”.

So, that night, Rosa dragged a sweaty little boy out of the street soccer game and plopped him next to me on the sidewalk. “Daniela, te presento Josiel, tú sobrino”.

There stood a seven-year-old boy with cheeks as red as cherries begging to be pinched off the tree.

I could tell he hardly noticed me in front of him because he was so focused on the game, but I didn’t mind. Josiel loves soccer: he even saved enough money to buy himself a soccer ball.

So, to help us get to know each other, Rosa asked me, “¿Tú sabes Lionel Messi?” My comprehension was trapped behind a wall of chatter and nerves.

She repeated, “¿Tú sabes a Lionel Messi?”

“Ahh! ¡Entiendo! Sí, yo conozco Lionel Messi, un jugador muy bueno.”

Josiel stared at me, backed up in slow motion, and disappeared back into the soccer match.

Fast forward through time, I’m trekking the gravel road from work to our home perched on the top of a hill. Six little boys and four little girls swarmed me faster (and cuter) than the pack of gnats dancing around my head.

I’m greeted with a chorus of, “¿¿¿¿Quieres jugar fútbol????”

“Okay…” I hesitated because my foot has a rare disease that prevents me from kicking balls into nets.

But, in the spirit of making new friends, I’m suddenly kicking dust in my blouse and slacks. I clumsily steal the ball from a barefoot 6-year-old, narrowly missing his forehead with my elbow. I aim the ball toward my teammate, but it shoots sideways into the patch of grazing goats. While someone sprints into the bramble to retrieve it, a kid asks,

“¿Tú eres de Argentina?”

I blink. “No… soy de los estados unidos”

“¿Y cómo conoces Lionel Messi, si no eres de su país?”

The question hits me harder than a soccer ball to the forehead. I rewind the tape to the moment of my mistake. I had confidently, but very incorrectly, told Josiel “conozco Lionel Messi,” as in I know him personally, instead of “yo sé quién es Lionel Messi,” which means I know who he is.

That’s why they wanted me to play soccer so bad!

Ultimately, I had no choice but to look the kid dead in the eyes and reply, “Porque Messi y yo somos amigos.”

Without missing a beat, the ball flies toward me. I trap it with my left foot, pinch it between my heels, and pop it over my head into a beautifully arched rainbow. It lands squarely at the feet of my five-year-old teammate.

With the tap of her pink Croc, she sends it gliding into the goal.

Moral of the story: You can make mistakes and friends at the same time 🤯

Se me cerraba la garganta cada vez que hablaba Español con un hablante nativo para muchos años.

Ahora, yo sé que un error en otro idioma puede lanzarte directo a una aventura inesperada. Como estar tres copas de vino adentro en una fiesta en la piscina. O frente a un bol humeante de Mondongo, que, para mi sorpresa, estaba buenísimo.

Pero, la mejor aventura fue cómo mi español medio roto me ayudó a ganarme a la manada de los muchachos del barrio.

El fin de semana me mudé al sitio de entrenamiento, Rosa, mi nueva mamá, me presentó con todo el mundo, familia vecinos, y curiosos, como su “hija.”

Ese viernes por la tarde, Rosa sacó a un niño sudado del juego de fútbol en la calle y lo plantó frente de mí en la acera.

“Daniela, te presento a Josiel, tu sobrino”.

Delante de mí, había un niño de siete años con ojos almadra y mejillas como cerezas, de esas piden a gritos que las pellizquen. Me costaría imaginarme a Josiel usando algo que no sea su jersey y sus tacos porque, porque el carajito vive por y para el fútbol. Hasta ahorró dinero para comprarse su propia pelota.

Para ayudar a romper el hielo, Rosa me preguntó,

“¿Tú sabes a Lionel Messi?”.

No entendí bien, entre el bulliciode fondo o y mi ansiedad general.

Ella me repitió, más clara,

“¿Tú sabes a Lionel Messi?”

“¡Ahhh! ¡Entiendo! Sí, yo conozco Lionel Messi, un jugador muy bueno.”

Josiel me miró, mientras caminaba para detrás despacito, y se desvaneció otra vez en el juego.

Al otro día, vengo subiendo por la calle de piedras desde el trabajo hasta la casa, posada arriba en la loma. Seis varones y cuatro embras me cayeron arriba más rápido (y más lindo) de los mosquitos que estaban bailando cerca de mi cabeza.

Me reciben al coro de,

“¿¿¿¿Quieres jugar fútbol????”

“Bueno…” Aparte de mi novio de joventud, Nunca en la vida alguien se ha emocionado por jugar fútbol conmigo, y con razón. Soy malísima.

Pero, en el nombre de hacer nuevos amigos, ahí estoy, dándolo todo en la cancha con un grupo de chiquitos de menos de cuatro pies y medio, vestida con mi blusa y pantalón de trabajo.

Le quito torpemente la bola a un niño de 6 años y sin zapatos, desapareciendo por poco su frente con mi codo. Apuntó la pelota a mi compañero, pero disparó lateralmente hacia un grupo de cabras pastando. Aunque alguien corre para recibirlo, un niño me pregunta,

“¿Tú eres de Argentina?”

Hago una pausa. “No… soy de los Estados Unidos”

“¿Y cómo conoces Lionel Messi, si no eres de su país?”

La pregunta me dio más duro que una pelota en la cara. Rebobiné el momento en el momento de mi error. Dije, con toda la seguridad del mundo “yo conozco a Lionel Messi,” en lugar de “yo sé quién es Lionel Messi,” porque en inglés, usamos la misma frase “I know” para las dos situaciones.

For dramatic illustration: I’m sitting in the teacher’s lounge right now, and I can smell the sweet tinge of sweat building at the nape of my neck. I did 20 minutes of gentle yoga and sweated through my nightgown at 6 AM. There’s no doubt that I savor the typical two to three showers a day.

This includes plastic chairs under trees with thick leaves, slow walks with umbrellas, and lounging beneath thatched roofs by the sea. Midday beacons a sort of sacred stillness. So, most people run errands early in the morning and evening, when the sun is gentle and kind.

Sometimes, just sometimes, I’m hit with vivid flashbacks of living in subzero Michigan. To endure both extremes, I must leave the house with proper attire, lie in bed for long periods, avoid getting caught in the rain (or snow), and eat hot soup, hot oats, and drink hot coffee.

Yes, hot coffee every day. Soup and oats a few times a week. Why? I’m not sure, but with each delectable taste, my judgment melts away with the sweat on my forehead. Maybe it’s the same reason my friends sip iced coffee with mittens, or why I’ll lick to the bottom of my ice cream bowl in the dead of winter (even though it makes me hack a lung).

Eso incluye sillas plásticas debajo de las matas, sombreros, caminatas con sombrillas, y descanso bajo techos de paja frente al mar. Mediodía es una tranquilidad sagrada. Por eso, la mayoría hace diligencias en la mañana y al caer la tarde, cuando el sol se pone suave y amable.

A veces, solo a veces, me llegan recuerdos vívidos de vivir en el frío extremo de Michigan. En los dos extremos, evito estar afuera sin ropa adecuada, me descanso en la cama, esquivo mojarme con lluvia (o la nieve), y como sopa caliente, avena caliente, y bebo café caliente.

Sí, café caliente todos los días. Sopa y avena varias veces a la semana. ¿Por qué? No lo sé. Pero con cada bocado delicioso, mis preguntas se derriten con el sudor en mi frente. Tal vez es parecido a cuando mis amigas toman café con hielo usando guantes de invierno, o como yo, que llamo el fondo del bol de helado en pleno diciembre aunque me dé tos.

I was sitting in the back of a math classroom when a student rolled her eyes and asked, “Prof, why did everyone care so much when the power went out in Spain for, like, 12 hours?”

The teacher explained it was the Iberian Peninsula Blackout of April 28, 2025, and that Spaniards weren’t prepared for something like that. “Dominicans, though? We just go to our uncle’s house because there’s a generator, we turn on the AC, and hang out for the night!” The class hooted and hollered about their parallel memories.

The Dominican Republic experiences more than its fair share of blackouts, averaging 18 per month. These certainly have negative effects on the economy, safety, and security of Dominican citizens, but Dominicans are surprisingly well-adapted to unreliable electricity.

Come to think of it, I’ve noticed many other habits that would serve the country well in a serious crisis. In fact, when the world is up in flames and modern society as we know it crumbles, I might just stay here. I think Dominicans might have the infrastructure, ingenuity, and camaraderie to adapt to the apocalypse, and here’s why…

PREPARED FOR ANYTHING

If a thunderstorm took out the power in Michigan, our water would immediately stop running, and we’d run the risk of seeking refuge at a hotel. Why? Because our water, like 87% of Americans, comes from the public water system and relies on electricity to be pumped to the house.

In contrast, Dominicans keep reserves of potable water in tanques and a weekly stock of drinkable water in botellones. Frequent blackouts have little to no effect on the water source.

In Spain, commerce slumped by 34% on April 28th. Without online payment methods, many items weren’t purchasable. We can imagine countries like the USA, Sweden, South Korea, etc., that rely more heavily on virtual payment methods would have seen a sharper decline in sales. In the DR, 2023, roughly 71% of household goods and services were paid for in cash. Here, I’ll stop at the colmado for a popsicle on my way to watch meteor showers consume the world.

TURNING SCRAPS INTO SOLUTIONS

More than anything, Dominicans are resourceful.

In the kitchen, unlikely parts of chicken, pigs, and cows become mouthwatering dishes like Bofe, Pico y Pala, Sopa de Mondongo, and stewed meats. Chicha de piña is a delectable drink of resourcefulness made with the cores and crusts of pineapple.

The same is true with other materials. A favorite pastime of many Dominicans is to lounge in plastic “monobloc” chairs with friends and family. They’re surprisingly comfortable but tend to crack because of the plastic’s malleability. What would you do in the States? If you're like me, you probably head to Target for a new one and let the broken one grow old in the shadows of your garage. In the DR, a bit of rope and something hot to melt small holes in the chair allow you to sew up the crack in no time.

Strolling through town, you won’t help but see examples of this resourcefulness. At the park, the baseball team fills old bottles of Kola Real with pebbles to use as running weights. You’ll wave to the art teacher on her moto and notice her bag stuffed with bottle caps and cardboard boxes for the next school project. Your sweet neighbor, who always wishes that “vayas con Díos,” will be sweeping her porch with a bundle of twigs bound to a broomstick by twine.

My favorite example is that at the end of a party, Dominicans always take home leftovers, even when there are no take-out containers. Picaderas wrapped in paper towels, cake stuffed in a styrofoam cup with a ripped-up plastic bag as the lid, and the creativity continues. In the cases we’ve run short of supplies during an event, guests have eaten off plates ripped in half or used ripped styrofoam as spoons. I’ve been proven wrong about the utility of many items I would have tossed, even in the apocalypse.

A CULTURE OF SHARING, NOT SURVIVING

Since arriving in March, no Dominican has missed a beat. If I glance at a snack, meal, or drink someone is enjoying, they will offer it without hesitation.

On her very own 12th birthday, my neighbor gifted me a bracelet. My host sister shares her dinner plate and glass of water with her kids as opposed to everyone eating separately. The next-door neighbor comes over for coffee every morning because my host mom loves the company. Today, I jokingly asked if I could have my host-nephew’s special fake money. He looked at the money, looked at me, and started to hand it over.

Whether it’s juice, time, or electricity, my experience with Dominicans is that they give and receive freely with an understanding that we are all in this together. This is the attitude I want on my apocalypse survival team.

Of course, please consider the type of apocalypse we are facing before booking a flight, because being trapped on an island with zombies sounds… bad. However, if you ever feel the world start to tumble, there might be some wisdom for survival in the Dominican Republic.

En el apocalipsis, no me voy

Estaba sentaba al fondo de un aula de matemáticas cuando una estudiante viró los ojos y preguntó, “ Profe, ¿y por qué a todo el mundo le importó tanto cuando se fue la luz en España por, dique, 12 horas?

El maestro explicó que fue el Gran Apagón de la Península Ibérica del 28 de abril de 2025, y que los españoles no estaban preparados para algo así. “¿Pero los Dominicanos? Nos vamos para la casa del tío que tiene una generadora, prendemos el aire, y hacemos coro toda la noche!” La clase entera se puso a vocear y hacer bulla.

La República Dominicana tiene más apagones de lo que le toca, con un promedio de 18 al mes. Claro eso afecta la economía, la seguridad, y la vida diaria, pero los dominicanos están sorprendentemente bien adaptados a una electricidad inestable.

De verdad, he notado muchos otros hábitos que podrían salvar el país de una crisis grave. De hecho, cuando el mundo esté en llamas y la sociedad moderna colapse, puede que me quede aquí. Creo que los dominicanos tienen la infraestructura, el ingenio, y la camaradería necesarios para adaptarse al apocalipsis, y aquí va por qué…

PREPARADOS PARA TODO

Si en Michigan se va la luz por una simple tormenta, el agua deja de salir de las tuberías, y podríamos terminar buscando hotel. ¿Por qué? Porque allá, como el 87% de los estadounidenses, usan el sistema público de agua que depende de electricidad para llegar a las casa.

En cambio, los Dominicanos tienen reservas de agua potable en tanques y siempre hay un botellón lleno para beber en sus casas. Apagones frecuentes casi no afectan el acceso al agua.

En España, el comercio se desplomó 34% en el 28 de abril. Sin métodos de pago digitales, muchas cosas no se podrían comprar. Imagínate en países como EE.UU., Suecia, Corea del Sur, entre otros, donde dependen aún más de pagos electrónicos, habrían tenido una mayor disminución en las ventas. En la DR en 2023, más o menos el 71% de las compras del hogar se pagaron en efectivo. Aquí, paró en el colmado a buscar una paleta mientras camino a ver cómo los meteoritos consumen el mundo.

DE DESPERDICIOS A SOLUCIONES

Más que nada, los Dominicanos son ingeniosos.

En la cocina, partes que muchos descartarían de las gallinas, los cerdos, y las vacas se convierten en platos buenísimos como el Bofe, Pico y Pala, Sopa de Mondongo, y carnes guisadas. La chicha de piña es una bebida inventiva hecha con los centros y las cáscaras de la fruta.

Lo mismo pasa con otros materiales. Aquí es normal pasar el rato en sillas plásticas blancas, las “monobloc” con los amigos y la familia. Son cómodas, pero tienden a rajarse. ¿Qué hace uno en Estado Unidos? Si somos similares, te manejas a Target por otra y dejas la rota cogiendo polvo en el garaje. Con un chin de soga y algo caliente para derretir agujeros en la silla, un dominicano puede coserla en un dos por tres.

Caminando por el pueblo, no faltan ejemplos del ingenio. En el parque, el equipo de béisbol llena botellas vacías de Kola Real con piedras para usarlas de pesas mientras corren. Saludas a la profe de arte en su pasola y ves su bolsa llena de tapas de botellas y cajas de cartón para el próximo proyecto. La vecina cariñosa, que siempre te desea que “vayas con Dios” barre la calle con una manojo de ramitas amarradas con alambre.

Mi ejemplo favorito es que al fin de una fiesta, los Dominicanos siempre se llevan lo que sobró aunque no haya envases. Picadera envueltos en servilletas, bizcocho metido en un vaso de foam y una tunda rota como tapa, y la creatividad sigue. En momentos donde han faltado utensilios, los huéspedes han comido con un plato partido por la mitad o un pedazo de poliestireno como cuchara. Me han demostrado la utilidad de muchas cosas que hubiera tirado, incluso en el apocalipsis.

UNA CULTURA DE COMPARTIR, NO SOBREVIVIR

Desde que llegué en marzo, ni un solo dominicano ha fallado. Si miro, aunque sea de reojo una merienda, comida o bebida, me la ofrecen sin pensarlo dos veces.

En su propio cumpleaños de 12 años, mi vecinita me regaló una pulsera. Mi hermana anfitriona comparte su cena y su vaso de agua con sus niños,en vez de que cada quien coma por su lado. La vecina viene a la casa cada mañana para tomarse un cafecito porque a mi madre anfitriona le encanta la compañía. Hoy, le pregunté en tono de broma si podría tener el dinero falso de mi sobrino anfitrionas. Él miró el dinero, miró a mí, y empezó a dármelo.

Ya sea jugo, tiempo, o electricidad, mi experiencia con los dominicanos es que dan y reciben con libertad porque entienden que todos estamos en esto juntos. Esa es la actitud que quiero en mi equipo de supervivencia para el apocalipsis.

Por supuesto, considera qué tipo de apocalipsis tenemos antes de comprar tu vuelto, porque quedarse atrapado en una isla llena de zombis suena… mal. Pero si alguna vez sientes que el mundo se está cayendo a pedazos, puede que encuentres un poco de sabiduría para sobrevivir en República Dominicana

Sure enough, we entered the church to face a floral backdrop with a “¡Feliz Día de las Mamás!” balloon. The mothers pinned red hearts to their fancy blouses that read “Feliz Día de las Madres” in a kid’s handwriting, and half a dozen kids sang “te amo mucho mamá” in front of the congregation. The most exciting part for me was the special service for women afterward.

I towed a chair into a tiny classroom of 25 well-dressed women in red, pink, and white, all wearing high heels. My host sister kicked off the gathering by reminding us that no man or child can sweep, wash, cook, or emotionally support like a mother. No one could have driven her point better than her three-year-old, who came moseying into the room and planted herself right between her mama’s legs mid-speech. Other women mentioned how their mothers have helped them profoundly throughout life. Some laughs, some woops, and some tears were shed.

It dawned on me that I’ve recently acquired two mothers in addition to my OG momma back home. I moved here without knowing how to take care of myself in the Dominican Republic. Rosa taught me that a tree is “una mata” and made me oat-water when my stomach was struggling. She prayed for the victims of the Florida State shooting with me. Yaquellin taught me how to use the washing machine and the mop!! She can even tell when the kids and dog are bothering me, and she distracts them. I was a stranger to both of them before 2025, but they love and care for me like their own because that’s what mothers do. Moms rule! So, go make a cute floral backdrop and tell her you love her!!

El día antes del Día de las Madres, yo preguntaba: “¿Y por qué hay tantas mujeres con los rolos?” El domingo por la mañana, saludé a mis dos sobrinitas vestidas con vestidos de rosado y rojo; me respondieron meneando los brazos para que se les notaran sus pulseras y collares nuevos. Al rato, llegó mi otra hermana desde la ciudad con su hija y hijo, lista para la iglesia. Finalmente, me di cuenta: hoy es un día festivo importante.

Y sí, entramos a la iglesia y de una vez vimos un telón lleno de flora y un globo que decía “¡Feliz Día de las Mamás!”. Todas las madres llevaban corazones rojos que decían “Feliz Día de las Madres” con letra de niño en sus blusas, y como seis muchachitos cantaron “te amo mucho mamá” delante de toda la congregación. Pero lo que más me emocionó fue el servicio especial solo para las mujeres después.

Yo llevé una silla a un aula chiquita donde había 25 mujeres bien vestidas en tonos de rojo, rosado, blanco y tacones. Mi hermana empezó la reunión diciendo que ningún hombre, ni ningún hijo, puede barrer, fregar, cocinar, ni dar soporte emocional como lo hace una madre. Nadie lo demostró mejor que su hija de tres años. Ella entró al aula sin prisa y se le sentó entre las piernas de su mamá en plena charla. Otras mujeres dijeron cómo sus mamás han sido un apoyo clave en sus vidas. Hubo risas, aplausos y también unas cuantas lágrimas.

Se me ocurrió que recientemente he adquirido dos madres además de mi linda mamá en los EE. UU. Me mudé aquí sin saber cómo cuidarme en República Dominicana. Rosa me enseñó que “una mata” es un árbol y me preparó agua de avena cuando tenía el estómago revuelto. Ella oró por las víctimas del tiroteo en la universidad de Florida State conmigo. ¡Yaquellin me enseñó a usar la lavadora y el suape! Ella se da cuenta cuando los niños y el perrito me molestan, y ella les da distracciones. Era una extraña para Rosa y Yaquellin antes de 2025, pero ellas me dan amor y cuidado como si fuera su propia hija porque eso es la pasión de una madre. ¡Las mamás son increíbles! Entonces, ve a hacerle un fondo floral lindo y dile que la amas.

These are the most crucial stats from day #1 in the Dominican Republic. We had a mashed plantain dish with pickled onions on top called Mangu. It was super tasty, but probably going to gain weight here. On a different note, I used to love drinking shower water in the states?? Big gulps of warm, hydrating water. I cannot do that anymore because the tap water isn’t potable, but I KEEP FORGETTING! HELP ME LORD!

Un mes y medio de despedidas terminó hoy cuando me registré en el hotel. Aquí, conoceré los otros 20 voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz que vivirán en la Republica Dominicana por dos años. Yo estaba tan nerviosa en la guagua desde apartamiento de Kelly hasta la hotel, le dije que prefería tirarme al mar. Ella me recordó que el padre de Hannah Erben le dijo, “el nerviosismo es excitación”. Decidí fingir eso es verdad en el camino desde mi habitación en el hotel hasta la primera sesión. Yo me paré en un circulo con 19 otros jóvenes estadounidenses, tirando de sus blusos, moviendo sus pies, y mirando con los ojos muy abiertos igual que yo. Deséennos suerte en nuestro vuelo que partiremos en tres días, amigos.
