Software ate the world. The cloud hyper-scaled. Compute felt endless.

And then the physical world came roaring back.

Because there is no cloud, and there is no compute, without physical infrastructure.

There are buildings. Chips. Transmission lines. Substations. Transformers. Cooling systems. Pipelines. Power plants. Steel. Concrete. And enormous amounts of electricity.

The defining economic question of the next decade may be remarkably simple:

Who has the power, and who will use it?

America wants to lead the world in artificial intelligence, reindustrialize our defense industrial base, and expand our broader production capacity.

We want to build again.

Good.

But all of it requires energy.

Now.

For years, we treated energy primarily as an environmental question, a commodity to be traded, something sourced from somewhere in the world, or something we noticed when gasoline prices moved.

We assumed it would be available. We became disconnected from the physical infrastructure and real constraints underneath it.

That assumption no longer works.

Energy is national power.

Economic power. Industrial power. Military power. Technological power.

AI makes this obvious. Intelligence requires compute. Compute requires infrastructure. Infrastructure requires power.

Lots of it.

America should pursue energy dominance with an almost unreasonable sense of urgency. Not around one source of energy or another, but around a simple idea:

Abundance.

We have the resources.

Pennsylvania sits at the heart of the Marcellus, part of the largest natural gas-producing region in America. Texas and New Mexico sit atop the Permian, our extraordinary oil-and-gas powerhouse. Across the country we have uranium, geothermal, wind, solar, hydropower and an enormous existing network of energy infrastructure.

America is not an energy-poor nation trying to manage scarcity.

We are an energy-rich nation that needs to build.

Because having resources isn’t the same as having power.

Natural gas underground isn’t power. Uranium in the ground isn’t power. Wind and sunlight aren’t power until we capture them. And if the equipment required to capture, convert, store or move that energy depends on an adversary, we’ve simply traded one form of dependence for another.

Energy dominance without supply-chain security isn’t energy dominance.

We need to extract here, manufacture here, generate here and build here.

And then we need to get that power to where it is actually needed.

This is where I think we’re having the wrong conversation about data centers.

We don’t have a data center problem. We have a power-to-requirement problem and, increasingly, a not-in-my-backyard problem.

We want AI, but not the data centers.

Electricity, but not the transmission lines.

Manufacturing, but not the factories.

Energy, but not the power plants.

Growth, but not the construction.

It doesn’t work that way.

We cannot demand the digital economy while rejecting the physical economy required to power it.

The answer isn’t simply to build more of everything everywhere. We should build intelligently. Put energy-intensive infrastructure closer to abundant generation. Build generation closer to industrial demand. Stop treating power plants, transmission, data centers and factories as unrelated projects.

They are one system.

We need power where we need it, when we need it, at the scale we need it.

That means nuclear. Natural gas. Geothermal. Renewables. Storage. Transmission. Pipelines. Substations. Transformers. It means electricians, linemen, welders and engineers. And it means fixing a permitting system that too often makes building anything of consequence extraordinarily difficult.

The objective should be simple:

America should have more energy than it knows what to do with.

Cheap, reliable, resilient American energy.

Because abundance creates options. It attracts factories, data centers and capital. It makes American manufacturing more competitive. It strengthens the defense industrial base. And it gives entrepreneurs room to build things we haven’t imagined yet.

For decades, globalization allowed us to hide much of the physical infrastructure underneath our prosperity.

We designed things. We financed things. We wrote software.

Somewhere else, someone mined, forged, manufactured and assembled much of the physical world.

We never stopped needing those things.

We just stopped seeing them.

Now AI is making electricity visible again. Geopolitical competition is making manufacturing visible. War is making industrial capacity visible.

The boring things aren’t so boring anymore.

Power plants. Transformers. Pipelines. Factories. Ports. Rail. Shipyards. Steel.

The boring things are becoming the strategic things.

They aren’t obstacles standing in the way of the future. They are the infrastructure underneath it.

So perhaps we should spend less time talking about why America can’t build and start asking a different question:

What if we just built it?

Energy dominance isn’t about producing the most barrels of oil or cubic feet of natural gas. It is about possessing such an abundance of secure, reliable, usable power that energy ceases to constrain American ambition.

Want to build a massive AI campus? We have the power.

A new factory? We have the power.

Expand the arsenal of democracy? We have the power.

Build something we haven’t even imagined yet?

We have the power.

That is energy dominance. It is the freedom to build.

The industries of the future do not float above the physical world. AI lives in buildings connected to the grid. Advanced manufacturing requires machines, factories and electricity. National defense requires steel, electronics, shipyards, factories and energy.

The future is going to be remarkably physical.

And it will belong to the nations willing to build it.

We have the resources. We have the technology. We have the capital. We have the workers.

Now we need the power.

Build the generation. Build the grid. Build the factories. Build the data centers. Build the ships.

Build it here.

Build until abundance, not scarcity, is the assumption underneath American ambition.

Build the power.

The conversations centered on the future of American manufacturing, energy, supply chains, and what it will take to rebuild our nation’s defense industrial base.

Everyone was talking about the future.

I found myself thinking about the past.

More specifically, I found myself thinking about my dad.

I grew up in a blue collar Pennsylvania family. As a kid, I thought my dad’s life was normal.

When work slowed down or disappeared altogether after a layoff, I remember my dad and his buddies signing the books at union halls across Pennsylvania, hoping their names would be called.

Plymouth Meeting, Philadelphia, York, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Reading, Scranton.

Every signature represented possibility.

Another chance.

Another paycheck.

Another opportunity to carry our family a little farther.

If the work was in Pittsburgh, he went to Pittsburgh. If it was somewhere else, he went there.

The job determined the destination.

For a season, my dad lived in a campground outside Pittsburgh while we remained outside Philadelphia, nearly five hours away.

Every Friday, he drove home.

Every Sunday, he drove back.

Not because it was convenient.

Because providing for his family came first.

At the time, I thought he was simply going to work.

Now I understand something entirely different.

He was carrying uncertainty so the rest of us could carry less of it.

Dad carried it on the road. Mom carried it at home and throughout her own career. My sister and I carried some of it too, even if we did not fully understand what we were carrying.

Children always know more than adults realize.

We hear conversations through half open doors and hushed voices after the lights go out at night. We recognize stress before we understand finances. We notice when Christmas looks a little different.

Not because our parents stop trying.

Because sometimes the work disappears.

That lesson found me early.

At nine years old, I started delivering newspapers.

Not because anyone asked me to.

Because it felt like what you did.

You worked.

You contributed.

You earned your way.

Looking back, that paper route was not really about making a few dollars. It was my first attempt to help. My first attempt to contribute.

Some of my favorite memories came on weekends.

We hunted grouse in Bradford County. We fished at Gifford Pinchot.

Those trips were not expensive. They were simply time together.

Looking back, I realize my dad was not just teaching me how to hunt or fish.

He was teaching me Pennsylvania.

Not from a map.

From its forests.

Its streams.

Its back roads.

Its small towns.

Its people.

He taught me that the same Commonwealth that provided a paycheck during the week could restore your soul on the weekend.

As I grew older, I watched steel plants close, factories shut down, and production lines disappear.

Those were not abstract economic statistics.

They were stories about families.

About mortgages.

About wondering where the next paycheck would come from.

About Christmas being a little smaller because work had disappeared, not because people had stopped working.

That distinction has stayed with me.

Over time, many of those factories became apartments, office buildings, wedding venues, and startup incubators. I am grateful those places found new life.

But I have never been able to look at them without remembering what they once were.

Places that produced.

Places that built.

Places where people made something real.

Places that gave entire communities purpose.

Standing at the Army War College, I found myself looking at maps my company, Exiger, had helped produce. They showed Pennsylvania’s industrial regions, manufacturing capacity, and economic vitality.

As I studied them, I realized something.

The maps were not teaching me Pennsylvania.

They were giving language to something my dad had already taught me through experience.

I did not know Pennsylvania because I had studied it.

I knew it because I had lived it.

I knew the towns where my dad searched for work. I knew the communities where another construction project meant another paycheck. I knew the woods where we hunted grouse and the water where we fished.

Long before I understood supply chains, I understood the people who made them possible.

What I experienced as a child, I now understand as an adult through data.

Then another realization hit me.

I do not need a map to navigate this Commonwealth.

I have spent my life crossing it.

First beside my dad.

Later in uniform.

Today through my work helping strengthen America’s defense industrial base.

I have driven to Fort Indiantown Gap for military training. I have traveled Interstate 81, Interstate 476, Interstate 78, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and countless back roads more times than I could ever count.

I have driven armored military vehicles across this Commonwealth.

I have watched mountains give way to valleys, rail lines connect manufacturing towns, and highways link depots, factories, military installations, and communities into something much larger than themselves.

Over time, I realized those roads were not just connecting places.

They were connecting opportunity.

They connected the men and women who mined coal, forged steel, built ships, manufactured components, maintained aircraft, assembled equipment, and kept America’s industrial engine running.

That is what a supply chain really is.

Not a spreadsheet.

Not a dashboard.

Not even a map.

It is people.

It is families.

It is communities.

Today, I spend my days looking at industrial data, manufacturing capacity, supplier networks, and economic resilience.

Those tools matter. They help us understand where risk exists and where opportunity can grow.

But data can tell only part of the story.

Experience tells the rest.

The maps did not teach me Pennsylvania. They simply gave language to something my dad had already spent a lifetime teaching me.

That is why conversations about rebuilding America’s industrial base are never abstract to me.

They are personal.

We should not recreate yesterday’s Pennsylvania.

The factories of tomorrow will not look like the factories of yesterday. They will build different products using different technologies.

But they will still depend on people who know how to make things.

People who solve problems.

People who take pride in honest work.

People who simply want the opportunity to provide for their families.

As I left the Army War College, I realized I had spent two days talking about the future of America’s industrial base.

Yet the image I could not shake was not a presentation.

It was not a chart.

It was not a map.

It was one man.

A union electrician driving across Pennsylvania looking for work.

Living in a campground outside Pittsburgh because the work was there.

Driving home every weekend because his family was here.

As a kid, I thought my dad was earning a paycheck.

Now I understand that he and my mom were giving us something much greater.

They were giving us stability.

They were giving us dignity.

They were showing us that responsibility is not something you talk about.

It is something you carry.

They taught me that work has dignity. That sacrifice rarely asks for recognition. And that the people who build things often build far more than they ever realize.

They build families.

They build communities.

They build the future.

Pennsylvania helped build America once.

I believe she can help build her again.

Not by returning to the past, but by giving another generation the opportunity to build something that matters.

To make something real.

To provide for a family.

To take pride in a day’s work.

By the time I learned to read industrial maps, my life had already taught me how to read this Commonwealth.

There are certain mornings when I head out before sunrise. The trails are empty. The fields are covered in mist. As I walk east, the sun hasn’t broken the horizon yet.

There’s a place near the creek where I always slow down.

Every time I walk through it, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Not because I think the place is haunted.

Although…there are mornings I’m not completely sure.

Standing there in the darkness before dawn, for a moment, I can almost see it.

The creek hides movement. The ground falls away just enough. Suddenly, it’s easier to understand how British soldiers surprised the Continental troops camped on the high ground overlooking the headwaters of Crum Creek.

That’s when the history books disappear.

I live less than half a mile from the battlefield. Valley Forge is less than ten miles from my home.

History didn’t happen somewhere else.

It happened here.

Every morning, it reminds me that freedom isn’t an abstraction.

It has an address.

Most evenings, I come back.

Only now, the same trails lead to baseball fields.

It’s all one place.

The battlefield and the ballfields share the same ground.

Where soldiers once moved through darkness, my kids chase fly balls.

Parents sit in lawn chairs.

Coaches hand out high fives.

Little brothers and sisters run through the grass.

Every time I stop and watch, I think the same thing.

I don’t think they were fighting for baseball.

But I think they were fighting for this.

Kids who never have to think about war.

Parents arguing over batting orders instead of survival.

Communities free enough to gather on a summer evening because their children are playing a game.

That’s what I think about every Fourth of July.

Not how America was won.

But how close we came to losing it.

We remember George Washington for defeating the British.

I’m not sure that was his greatest victory.

I think it was keeping thirteen very different colonies moving in the same direction.

They argued about politics.

Money.

Strategy.

Power.

The army was hungry.

Soldiers deserted.

Congress struggled.

Nothing about the outcome was inevitable.

He couldn’t wait for everyone to agree.

He convinced enough people that what united them mattered more than what divided them.

That’s the experiment.

It didn’t make us perfect.

Far from it.

We’ve fought each other.

We’ve broken our own promises.

We’ve denied freedom while talking about liberty.

Sometimes we’ve forgotten who we’re supposed to be.

But we’ve also kept trying to become something better.

Maybe that’s the point.

The experiment was never perfection.

It was the willingness to keep building.

I see it coaching baseball.

Nine kids.

Nine different personalities.

Nine different confidence levels.

My job isn’t to make them the same.

It’s to help them become a team.

I see it serving on borough council.

People disagree.

They should.

The question is whether we’ll keep building together anyway.

I see it in business.

The best teams I’ve worked with weren’t the ones without conflict.

They were the ones that kept moving toward the same goal.

Somewhere along the way, we started waiting.

Waiting for Washington.

Waiting for Harrisburg.

Waiting for the courts.

Waiting for CEOs.

Waiting for someone else.

That’s never how this country was built.

It was built by people who decided their little corner of it mattered.

Parents.

Teachers.

Veterans.

Entrepreneurs.

Neighbors.

Volunteers.

People who quietly leave a place better than they found it.

Nearly 250 years ago, men crossed these fields in darkness, unsure whether they would live to see another sunrise. Some didn’t and we also remember them buried in the unmarked grave on the fields.

Today, children play on those same fields without giving it a second thought.

That’s not an accident.

That’s the inheritance.

The men who crossed these fields didn’t hand us a finished nation.

They handed us an unfinished one.

Most mornings, I walk across history.

Most evenings, I watch my kids play baseball on it.

The battlefield and the ballfields are the same place.

Maybe that’s the experiment.

To receive something imperfect.

To care for it.

To leave it stronger than we found it.

Whether that’s a family.

A baseball team.

A business.

A town.

Or a country.

At the same time, I was in Officer Candidate School.

He had recently completed Infantry School. I was learning what it meant to become an Army officer.

We didn’t know each other.

Fourteen years later, I found myself listening to him describe a day that became part of military history.

Last Thursday evening, I attended a reception honoring Major Nicholas Dockery ahead of his induction into the Army Hall of Heroes.

Major Dockery spoke.

The soldiers who fought beside him spoke.

Stories were shared.

Memories were revisited.

The following morning, hundreds of Americans gathered at Fort Myer to honor him.

The crowd was so large the ceremony had to be moved from the Hall of Heroes itself into a larger auditorium.

I thought I was there to hear a story about heroism.

I left thinking about character.

Major Dockery began both of his speeches the same way.

Not with Afghanistan.

Not with the Medal of Honor.

Not even with himself.

He began with two events that shaped his understanding of service long before October 2, 2012.

The tornado that struck Hoisington, Kansas, on April 21, 2001.

And September 11th.

What stayed with him wasn’t simply the devastation.

It was what happened afterward.

Neighbors helping neighbors.

Communities rallying.

Strangers showing up.

Americans remembering that they belonged to one another.

Those moments, he said, compelled his understanding of service and support.

Then he drew a line from those moments to his own life.

To the Army.

To Afghanistan.

To leadership.

To responsibility.

Only then did he tell the story everyone had come to hear.

As he reflected on the actions that ultimately led to the Medal of Honor, he described reaching a moment where he could not ask another soldier to do something he wasn’t willing to do himself.

So he acted.

Then he shared the detail I haven’t stopped thinking about.

He didn’t know anyone was following him until he heard the soldiers behind him hitting the same wall he had struck moments earlier.

Listening to him, I thought about that sound.

Not the wall.

The soldiers behind him.

Someone moved first.

Others followed.

A burden became shared.

There was something else.

Twice, in two different speeches, Major Dockery referenced not always knowing how to love himself.

At one point he spoke about the mental health foundation he created and why he chose to put his own name on it.

“When you put your name on something, you can’t hide from it.”

Here was a Medal of Honor recipient standing before hundreds of Americans during one of the most significant moments of his life.

He wasn’t building a mythology around himself.

He wasn’t pretending to have everything figured out.

He was telling the truth.

Near the end of his remarks, he returned to Hoisington and September 11th.

We already know how, he said.

We’ve seen it before.

We’ve watched Americans come together when everything was on the line.

Yet increasingly, we seem to wait for an existential threat before we remember who we are.

The room got quiet.

Because everyone knew exactly what he meant.

After the ceremony, I joined the receiving line.

The night before, I had briefly shaken his hand.

“Congratulations, brother,” I said.

I didn’t ask for a picture.

“I appreciate that,” he replied.

The next day, after meeting hundreds of people, he remembered me.

Then he asked what I did.

The question caught me off guard.

I had spent two days thinking about him.

His story.

His service.

His remarks.

Instead, he wanted to know about me.

After two days of speeches, ceremonies, and recognition, his attention remained fixed on someone else.

As I drove home from Fort Myer, I realized what had stayed with me.

Not the Medal of Honor.

Not the ceremony.

Not even the story from Afghanistan.

What stayed with me was what remained after all of it.

Responsibility.

Humility.

Honesty.

Community.

The older I get, the more I think storms reveal rather than create.

The tornado didn’t create community in Hoisington.

It revealed it.

September 11th didn’t create sacrifice.

It revealed it.

The battlefield didn’t create character.

It revealed it.

Perhaps that’s why Major Dockery’s remarks have stayed with me.

The Medal of Honor recognized what he did on one day in Afghanistan.

His words revealed the kind of man he had been becoming long before that day arrived.

Perhaps that’s the real measure of a life.

Not what is recognized.

What remains.

Maura finished kindergarten.

Gabe finished second grade.

The morning felt almost identical to every other morning this year.

Most mornings when I wasn’t traveling, the day started in the kitchen.

Kerrin made lunches.

I made breakfast.

Gabe wanted an Eggie Bagel.

Noah wanted sausage with syrup.

Maura wanted cereal.

The same orders almost every morning.

Then came backpacks, water bottles, missing shoes, and all the normal chaos that comes with getting three kids out the door.

When the weather was good, Gabe and I would sneak over to the batting cages before school.

Nothing elaborate.

Just a few extra swings before the day started.

Then we’d meet everyone else and walk to the bus stop.

In the fall, we’d bring a football.

By spring, it was baseball gloves.

Gabe had his.

Maura had hers.

This year Noah started bringing one too.

Three kids. Three gloves.

The boys had matching lightning bolts shaved into the sides of their hair. Gabe’s blond. Noah’s brown.

Maura showed up most mornings with long blond hair, a dress she picked herself, and a baseball glove tucked under her arm because she had no interest in being left out.

We’d throw for a few minutes.

Talk about baseball.

Listen to whatever story Maura needed to tell before the bus arrived.

Then the bus would come around the corner.

The doors would open.

The kids would climb aboard.

And Noah and I would start the walk home.

Tuesday was the last time we’d do that this school year.

Standing there, I found myself thinking about a decision Kerrin and I made several years ago.

At the time, we were living in Nashville.

All three of our kids were born there.

Two of them went to preschool there.

We had routines.

Saturday mornings at the farmers market.

Friday night pizza with friends.

Some of our closest friendships were built there.

In many ways, life was exactly what we hoped it would be.

Which is what made the decision so difficult.

We weren’t leaving a place we disliked.

We were leaving a place we loved.

But as the kids got older, I couldn’t quite see the future we wanted there.

I tried.

I just couldn’t.

The bus stop.

Little League.

Running into people you know around town.

The rhythms of a community that felt rooted instead of temporary.

I couldn’t explain it then.

I still don’t know that I can fully explain it now.

I just knew it wasn’t there.

Or maybe more accurately, I knew it was here.

So we made a change.

We came home.

Standing at the bus stop Tuesday morning, I found myself grateful we did.

The truth is that none of this happened because of me alone.

For more than twenty years, Kerrin has been saying yes to many of the same dreams.

Sometimes she could see exactly where we were headed.

Sometimes she couldn’t.

Either way, she trusted me enough to keep walking.

Because the truth is that none of this happened by accident.

When I was twenty years old, my life looked very different.

During the week I worked down the Shore delivering furniture.

On weekends I’d come home, play baseball, spend time with Kerrin, pick up odd jobs, and then head back to the Shore to do it all again.

One weekend I was working at a house near my hometown owned by a man named Jim.

The week before I had been pulling weeds and ended up with poison ivy all over my arms.

Now I was pulling insulation out of a space above my head when a dead mouse fell down on me.

I remember standing there sweaty, itchy, exhausted, and knowing I’d be back in the car before sunrise the next morning heading to the Shore for another week of work.

At twenty, that was life.

And somewhere during those years I started making promises to myself.

No future generation of Kunze will do this work.

Not because there is anything wrong with honest work.

There isn’t.

I just wanted my future family to have options I didn’t.

A few years later, during law school, an Army recruiter picked me up in a white Army van and drove me to Harrisburg to enlist.

I signed an eight-year commitment in exchange for $50,000 in student loan repayment.

Looking back, it doesn’t sound like much.

At the time, it felt like everything.

What I remember most wasn’t the money.

It was the relief.

For the first time in a while, I felt like I had a direction.

I wasn’t giving something up.

I was choosing a path.

I didn’t have kids.

I wasn’t married.

I had no idea what my life would eventually look like.

But I did know one thing.

If I was fortunate enough to have children someday, I was going to be present.

I was going to be home.

Not every day.

Not perfectly.

Life doesn’t work that way.

But I wasn’t going to spend my entire life building a future while my family was somewhere else living it.

At twenty years old, those dreams are abstract.

You don’t know their names yet.

You don’t know what they’ll look like.

You don’t know that one of them will want an Eggie Bagel every morning.

Or that another will insist on sausage with syrup.

Or that your daughter will wear a dress while carrying a baseball glove to the bus stop.

You just know you’re building toward something.

Looking back now, I realize I wasn’t building a career.

At least not primarily.

I was building availability.

I was building the ability to be there.

The furniture truck.

The Army.

Law school.

Sales.

Nashville.

The move home.

From the outside they look like career decisions.

Looking back, they were all attempts to create the same thing.

Time.

Presence.

The freedom to participate in the life I hoped to have someday.

I just didn’t know what that life would look like yet.

As a kid, I started making egg sandwiches on a roll for my grandpop.

He’d tell me they were the most delicious sandwiches he’d ever had.

Looking back, I’m pretty sure they weren’t.

But he said it every time anyway.

This year I made Gabe his Eggie Bagels most mornings before school.

As the year went on, he started making them himself.

I’d still be there in the kitchen showing him how to use the stove or reminding him not to rush.

One morning I realized we weren’t really making breakfast anymore.

My grandpop had passed something to me.

Now I was passing it to Gabe.

A lot of the biggest decisions I made were really decisions for people I hadn’t met yet.

None of them felt connected at the time.

Looking back, they all seem to point in the same direction.

My favorite part was always the walk home with Noah.

Once the bus disappeared around the corner, everything got quiet.

Just the two of us.

Well, as quiet as it can be with Noah.

Sometimes he’d run ahead.

Sometimes he’d stop to investigate something that absolutely could not wait.

Sometimes he’d grab my hand and pull me one direction, then another.

“Daddy, am I in charge?”

Usually before I could answer, he’d already decided he was.

And most mornings, sooner or later, he’d make the same request.

“Put me on your head.”

Not your shoulders.

Your head.

I’d laugh, pick him up, and carry him home.

At some point, that became our routine.

One day it won’t be.

Twenty years ago, I made a promise to a family that did not exist.

Tuesday morning, standing at a bus stop, I realized I had kept it.

What struck me wasn’t that I had built a career.

It was that I had built a life.

The thing I was chasing was never really a title, a paycheck, or a balance sheet.

It was this.

The ability to be present for ordinary moments.

Because in the end, those ordinary moments are the whole thing.

I think that’s why place matters so much.

Place is where promises become reality.

It’s where marriages happen.

Where friendships deepen.

Where children grow up.

Where ordinary mornings slowly become a childhood.

Several years ago, Kerrin and I thought we were making a decision about geography.

Looking back, I think we were making a decision about belonging.

We were choosing the place where our children would grow up and the kind of life we wanted to share with them.

Tuesday morning reminded me that decisions compound just like investments do.

One morning at a bus stop doesn’t seem important.

But hundreds of mornings become a childhood.

The funny thing is that when you’re twenty years old, you imagine you’ll know when you’ve arrived.

You picture some grand moment.

A promotion.

A milestone.

A number in a bank account.

But most of the time it doesn’t happen that way.

Most of the time it looks like an ordinary Tuesday.

A bus stop.

Three baseball gloves.

An Eggie Bagel.

A little boy asking to be carried home.

And the realization that the life you were trying to build has been here all along.

Not small.
Not narrow.

Local and grounded.

About belonging somewhere. Being known somewhere. Building roots deep enough that people can tell the difference between who you are and a bad day.

That hit me harder than I expected.

I’ve spent a lot of my life chasing optionality.

Keep the doors open.
Keep moving.
Stay mobile.
Stay global.
Never commit too hard to one thing, one place, one identity.

And for a while, that works. Especially if you’re ambitious.

The modern world rewards motion. It rewards people who can operate anywhere, talk to anyone, adapt instantly, and never fully anchor themselves to a single place.

I understand the appeal because I built much of my life that way.

In the last few weeks alone I’ve been in Honolulu, New York City, D.C., talking about defense, AI, energy, supply chains, deterrence, infrastructure, and the future of the country. I’ve sat in rooms connected to problems that operate at continental scale. The world is deeply interconnected now. Being global matters.

But eventually everyone still has to go home.

And increasingly, I think what people are actually starving for is not reach.

It’s anchoring.

A few days ago, back at the little league snack shack, I said I was a little off the day before because of the jet lag coming back from Hawaii, and the person behind the counter, who is also our friend and somebody we see almost every single week, said something to me I haven’t been able to stop thinking about:

“You’re known here. If you act different, people just assume it’s a bad day.”

That sentence contains an entire philosophy of life.

That’s community.

That’s what being local means.

It means your identity compounds over time because people have enough history with you to contextualize a moment instead of defining you by it.

That kind of trust cannot be built at scale.

You earn it slowly.

Repetition.
Presence.
Showing up over and over again.
Coaching the practices.
Sitting through the meetings.
Walking into the same places enough times that eventually your reputation stabilizes into something durable.

And I think many people, myself included, pushed back against that for years because we were taught that maintaining optionality was always the intelligent move.

Don’t commit too early.
Don’t narrow your path.
Don’t close doors.
Always preserve leverage.
Always preserve escape velocity.

But I’m starting to think endless optionality is bullshit.

At some point you have to choose.

To stay.
To build.
To become accountable to a place and to people.

Because if you never commit, eventually your entire life becomes temporary.

You can know everyone and still belong nowhere.

And honestly, I think that realization has changed my life over the last year.

Particularly my marriage.

My commitment to Kerrin.

My commitment to our family.

There was a period of my life where I think I unconsciously viewed stability as something that competed with ambition. Like rootedness somehow came at the expense of growth.

I don’t believe that anymore.

I think the deepest growth in life often comes from commitment itself.

From staying.

From repairing.

From building something over time instead of constantly searching for the next thing.

Marriage does that to you if you let it.

Children do that to you.

Responsibility does that to you.

They force you to stop living entirely for yourself.

And strangely, I think that’s where a lot of meaning actually begins.

I think that’s part of what has quietly happened to a lot of people in modern America.

The world got smaller technologically at the exact same time people became more psychologically untethered.

We can reach anyone.
Travel anywhere.
Work from everywhere.

But many people no longer feel claimed by anything.

No town.
No neighborhood.
No institution.
No civic identity.
No shared obligation.

Just motion.

In The Second Mountain, David Brooks argues that a meaningful life is ultimately built through commitments you bind yourself to.

Family.
Faith.
Community.
Service.
Responsibility.

Not endless self optimization.

Commitment narrows you.

But it also deepens you.

And honestly, I think I’ve changed over the last year in ways I don’t fully understand myself.

A hard break from constant acceleration. Constant reaction. Constant proving.

Not every signal deserves a response anymore.

Not every fight deserves engagement.

Not every opportunity deserves pursuit.

There’s an old jungle saying:

“Don’t touch the water when you see the lion staring back at you.”

I understand that differently now.

Discernment matters.

Stillness matters.

Being internally anchored matters.

And increasingly, I think that also includes commitment to something higher than yourself.

Not necessarily religion in the institutional sense.

But God.

Or at minimum the acknowledgment that you are not the center of the universe.

That there is something above appetite. Above ego. Above achievement. Above status.

Something permanent.

Something ordering.

Something that asks you not just what you can accomplish, but who you are becoming.

I think a lot of modern anxiety comes from people trying to build entirely self authored lives with no transcendent reference point at all.

Just optimization.
Performance.
Consumption.
Attention.
Motion.

But human beings seem to need something deeper than freedom alone.

We need orientation.

We need reverence.

We need something that pulls us out of ourselves and reminds us that life is not purely transactional.

Because eventually your life becomes the accumulation of what you repeatedly return to.

For me, increasingly, that means family.

My kids.
My wife.
Baseball fields.
Malvern.
Council meetings.
Pennsylvania.
Neighbors.
The rhythms that looked small to me years ago but now feel foundational.

The older I get, the less impressed I am by people who can go anywhere.

I’m more impressed by people who chose somewhere.

Who stayed long enough to matter there.

Who became woven into the fabric of a place.

Because being local is not really about geography.

It’s about commitment.

It’s about mutual commitment.

It’s about staying somewhere long enough that people stop experiencing you as a transaction and start experiencing you as part of the fabric of their lives.

And honestly, I think that may be one of the last things in modern life that still makes people feel whole.

• It’s not automatic

• You have to give responsibility away

• Captains matter

• Development over control

• I’m not optimizing for winning every game

• Trust shows up before performance

• You can feel when it changes

Why It Matters

At the start, it’s just a group.

Everything runs through you.

That works.

But it doesn’t last.

The longer version

I’ve been on teams my whole life.

Baseball, football, ice hockey, basketball, rugby.

Corporate America.

The U.S. Army.

Different environments. Same pattern.

Teams don’t just exist.

They develop.

They take shape over time.
They build momentum.
They peak across a stretch.

And most of the time, the best teams don’t just have the best players.

They have the right players playing their roles.

That part matters.

Because over time, a team inherits the temperament of its leader.

The pace.
The standards.
The trust.
The tension.

All of it transfers.

Good leaders bring people around them who make them better.

Weak leaders bring people around them they can control.

That’s true in companies.

It’s true in the Army.

It’s true on a baseball field with kids.

Early in the season, they wait.

You’re holding all of it.

You can feel how fragile it is.

The second you pull back, it breaks.

So you start giving it away.

Who calls it out in the field
Who sets the tone

I probably trust them earlier than most people would.

At first, they look back at you.

They want confirmation.

You don’t give it every time.

That’s the point.

I’ve realized I care more about development than control.

It would be easier to run everything.

Cleaner. Fewer mistakes.

But nothing transfers that way.

So they play everywhere
They try things
They mess things up

It’s harder to watch than it sounds.

And they learn.

Then it starts to shift.

They talk to each other
They fix small things
They take ownership

The first 108 days aren’t about winning.

They’re about learning how the system actually works and making it work better.

The longer version

It’s been 108 days since I took my seat on Malvern Borough Council.

Long enough to see how things operate.
Not long enough to pretend I’ve mastered anything.

What stands out isn’t politics.

It’s structure.

The Borough Manager has made real improvements in how the borough operates.
Clearer processes.
Better coordination.
More disciplined execution.

You can feel it.

Not in headlines.
In flow.

Things move more cleanly.
Decisions connect.
Follow through is more consistent.

That matters more than most people realize.

Because once the structure works, everything else gets easier.

Good operational leadership matters.

Leadership, day to day, is the difference.

It’s not speeches.
It’s not positioning.

It’s how things actually run.

In that sense, it’s no different than a business.

With a strong operator, things move.
Decisions get made.
Execution follows.

With a good Borough Manager, the town runs well.

You feel it in the details.

In Nicole’s office, there’s a small sign.

“If you want to talk about something, ask a man.
If you want something done, ask a woman.”

It’s funny.

But it also tells you what she prioritizes.

Getting things done.

Public Safety has been my focus.

Because you move to Malvern for a few reasons.

At the top of the list is that it’s safe.

You want to walk the community and feel safe.
You want your kids to ride their bikes and feel safe.
You want to know your police officers and wave as they pass by.

That’s the standard.

It comes down to three areas.

One, reduce traffic congestion using the tools we already have.
Two, make sure our crosswalks are optimized and working the way they should.
Three, identify incremental improvements to public safety and accessibility through sidewalks and other low cost measures.

Above all, prioritize.
Execute.
Complete.

Most frustration at the local level doesn’t come from bad intent.
It comes from lack of clarity.

When people don’t know what’s happening, they assume the worst.

So a big part of the job is tightening that loop.

Say what we’re doing.
Do what we said.
Close the loop.

And then do it again.

There’s also the part people don’t see.

The operational side.

Walking sites.
Checking conditions.
Understanding issues firsthand.

Cold. Quiet. No audience.

Just making sure something small is actually working the way it’s supposed to.

That’s the job too.

I didn’t know if I would enjoy this.

I do.

More than I thought I would.

People feel it.

And over time, it compounds.

No committee votes for that outcome.
No alignment produces it.

The system moves because it has to.

Tension rises.

And everything downstream adjusts.

And yet much of our political, economic, and corporate analysis is still anchored to the old one.

That is why so much of the present moment feels confusing to otherwise smart and informed people.

They are not reacting to the world as it is.

They are reacting to the world as it was.

The longer version

We keep orienting to a world that doesn’t exist anymore.

A world where shipping lanes stayed open.
Where energy could be treated as background noise.
Where supply chains were efficient enough to be mistaken for permanent.
Where production could move anywhere without strategic consequence.
Where security and commerce could still be discussed as separate domains.

That world produced a certain kind of thinking.

Globalization without friction.
Diplomacy without constraint.
Policy without physical limits.

But that world was always more fragile than it looked.

Now the constraints are visible.

Energy matters again.
Distance matters again.
Production matters again.
Security is no longer abstract.

The system hierarchy

Production comes first.

You cannot project strength you cannot build.
You cannot sustain systems you cannot maintain.

Artificial intelligence sits on top of that base.

Much of today’s analysis still sounds like it is coming from a more permissive era.

An era where:

• global integration was expanding

• constraints were manageable

• disruption was temporary

So when pressure shows up now, it gets interpreted as unnecessary, destabilizing, or avoidable.

Instead of being recognized for what it often is:

a signal that the underlying system has changed.

What people are getting wrong right now

I’ve watched a lot of smart people collapse two ideas into one:

• inflation

• and “no new wars”

As if those are proof that the system is stable.

They are not.

They are artifacts of transition.

Inflation is not just monetary.

It is physical.

Energy constraints.
Supply chain friction.
Labor shortages.
Reindustrialization costs.

At the same time, “no new wars” gets treated as a signal of restraint.

But conflict has not disappeared.

It has shifted form:

• economic pressure

• chokepoint leverage

• supply chain disruption

• cyber competition

• space domain competition

The system did not become peaceful.

It became more structural.

Meanwhile, capital is already moving

While commentary debates the past, capital is pricing the future.

Look at where money is flowing:

• energy infrastructure

• defense and industrial capacity

• semiconductors and compute

• space and launch systems

You do not get to a world where SpaceX is discussed in the context of a trillion-dollar valuation by accident.

That is not just a tech story.

It is a systems signal.

Launch capacity matters.
Orbital infrastructure matters.
Sovereign access to space matters.
And the boundary between commercial capability and national capability is disappearing.

Capital is not nostalgic.

It moves first.

The geometry of the system is changing

For a long time, the model looked like this:

• production offshore

• consumption in the West

• security underwritten by the United States

• energy treated as global and fungible

That geometry is shifting.

Now you are seeing:

• re-shoring and near-shoring of production

• regionalized supply chains

• energy becoming local, strategic, and contested

• allies being pushed toward contribution, not assumption

The system is becoming more physical.
More regional.
More conditional.

And leadership looks different now

Western leadership used to look like:

• stability

• predictability

• low-friction guarantees

Now it looks more like:

• conditional access

• pressure before alignment

• contribution before protection

Less: we will handle it.
More: you will participate.

That does not feel as clean.

But it is more aligned with a constrained world.

The real issue

Most people are not wrong because of bias.

They are wrong because their map of the world is outdated.

They are still assuming:

• abundant energy

• frictionless trade

• stable supply chains

• permanent security underwriting

None of those can be taken for granted anymore.

The new operating model

This does not mean collapse.

It means adjustment.

A different set of rules:

• resilience over theoretical efficiency

• energy as a strategic input, not a background utility

• production capacity as national strength

• supply chains designed for stress, not just margin

• security and economics treated as one architecture

This is not a temporary phase.

It is the new baseline.

We keep orienting to a world that doesn’t exist anymore.

The mistake is not disagreement.

That’s the part people see.

What they don’t see is that I’ve seen and done this before.

I was part of the largest deal in ServiceNow’s history.
I closed the biggest deals at Gartner.
We did it again at LeoLabs.
And now again.

Different companies. Different products. Different industries.

Same pattern.

At some point, you stop treating that as coincidence.

I’ve been selling longer than I’ve been thinking about it.

I had a paper route when I was nine.

You learn quickly that no one is coming to buy anything unless you show up, consistently, and they trust you enough to keep coming back.

And if you did it well, it didn’t stop there.

Some of those same customers became my first landscaping clients.

Not because I sold them something new.

Because they already trusted me.

I didn’t call it sales then.

I just knew:

• If you showed up, people noticed

• If you were reliable, they stayed

• If you weren’t, they didn’t

That structure never changed.

The environments did.

Enterprise software.
Space infrastructure.
Defense and national security.

Same dynamics. Different surface area.

Large outcomes don’t come from selling harder.

They come from recognizing when the system is ready to move
and being the one it moves through.

Three things align:

1. Institutional pressure — something has to change

2. Credible path — you’re trusted to solve it

3. Timing window — budget, leadership, urgency converge

When those three line up, deals close faster than people expect.

When they don’t, nothing you say or do forces it.

For a long time, I didn’t think about any of this explicitly.

I just worked.

But after you see it enough times, across different environments, it stops feeling like momentum.

If it happens once, it’s a win.
Twice, you pay attention.
Four times across different systems, it’s structure.

That’s when the identity shifts.

I don’t think of myself as someone who sells deals.

I recognize patterns
and stay in them long enough for outcomes to happen.

Early in my career, my first boss at Gartner said something I didn’t fully understand.

He told me I was unconsciously competent.

That I was doing things quickly that most people take years to figure out
but I couldn’t explain why.

And he said it as a warning.

Before you can lead, you have to go through time and scars.

That was true.

This is the first time I can see it clearly.

And once you become consciously competent, it requires a different discipline.

You can’t rely on instinct alone.

You have to understand what you’re doing well enough to repeat it
and carry it responsibly.

And the environments where this matters most are the hardest ones.

Large institutions don’t move because you want them to.

They move because something forces them to.

If you’re trying to change something at the level of the Department of Defense, you learn this quickly:

You have to be arrogant enough to believe you can change it
and humble enough to do the work required to move it.

Most people get this wrong.

They either underestimate the system
or overestimate themselves.

Both fail.

That’s the part most people miss.

They treat the outcome as the finish line.

It’s the starting point.

Because the real work begins after the deal closes:

• Deconstruct what actually happened

• Understand why it happened now

• Identify where else those conditions exist

• Build a path to recreate them

• Build it so it doesn’t depend on you

If you don’t do that, you didn’t really win.

You experienced a spike.

Most people spend their careers chasing spikes.

The ones who build something real learn to ignore them.

Because the question isn’t whether you can do it once.

It’s whether it shows up again
in a different environment
with a different team
without everything lining up perfectly.

It’s trading honesty for appearances.

Saying the right thing instead of the true thing.

Maintaining the image instead of confronting reality.

Protecting how things look instead of dealing with what they are.

That’s where the real erosion starts.

Because once appearances matter more than honesty, the system can’t correct itself.

Family, health, finances, community, these do not just grow. They stabilize, and then they compound.

Modern professional culture often pushes in the opposite direction.

The longer version

Over time, I have started to notice that the parts of life that actually work, families, communities, the places people return to, have something in common.

They stabilize.

And if I am being honest, most of what I have learned about stability has not come from studying systems.

It has come from living inside one.

About a year ago, Kerrin and I went through a difficult stretch in our marriage. Not loud from the outside, but inside we were not aligned. We were talking past each other.

I was focused on what I thought mattered, providing, working hard, building something for our family. And I felt frustrated that she could not see that.

She was focused on something different, that I was not present, that I was not available, that I was not as emotionally connected to her and the kids as I needed to be.

We were both right. And we were both missing each other.

There was a moment that forced everything open. Not something I would have chosen, but something that made it impossible to keep going the way we were.

And in that moment, I had to face something I had known for a long time.

You can build a lot of things. But if you are not anchored in the people closest to you, none of it holds the way you think it will.

That is where the shift started. Not as an idea. As a correction.

For a long time, success for me was defined by motion. Sitting still felt like failing. So I kept moving. The next job. The next opportunity. The next version of what I thought I was supposed to become.

Movement signals progress. Stability can look like standing still.

But the parts of life that matter most do not improve through constant movement. They improve through continuity.

The people who stay long enough to understand what they are building are the ones who make it better.

Acceleration carries costs that are easy to miss at first. Pressure on a marriage. Distance from family. Children growing up across different places, sometimes knowing their parents through FaceTime more than everyday life.

None of this makes ambition wrong.

In your twenties and early thirties, movement often makes sense. You learn faster. You take risks. You prove yourself.

For a long time, I thought success meant landing the biggest possible job. A partner in a law firm. A CXO role. The kind of role that signals to the world that you have made it.

But those paths often come with an unspoken trade. Work comes first. Family fits around the edges.

It took me time to really see that.

I still want to build meaningful things. I still want to take on real responsibility.

But I do not want to build a life that pulls me away from the people it is supposed to be for.

If bigger roles come, they have to fit inside the life we are building. Not the other way around.

Ambition builds a career.

But stability is what allows a life to hold.

What Holds

A strong marriage deepens over time.

A home becomes something people can return to.

Friendships grow roots.

Children grow up inside something that does not constantly change around them.

Over time, that creates something you can rely on.

The same is true for the places we live.

Communities become real when people stay. When they invest in each other. When they show up over time.

Familiar faces. Shared expectations. A sense that people are not passing through.

That is what makes a place feel like somewhere you belong.

Finding Stability

My twenties were defined by movement. School, jobs, different places. That phase made sense.

But Nashville marked a shift. That is where Kerrin and I started building something, not just moving through life, but actually building one.

A marriage. A home. The early structure of a family.

Malvern marked another shift. Not exploration. Stability.

A place where our kids could grow up with roots. A place where life did not have to keep resetting.

At some point, the question changes.

Not where should I go next, but where should I stand to build something that lasts.

For us, that became Malvern.

People sometimes ask what comes next for me professionally or politically.

The answer is simple.

Right now, the priority is being present with my family while our kids are still young.

That phase does not repeat.

There will be time for everything else. But whatever comes next has to grow from a stable life. Not come at the expense of it.

This season has been about Kerrin and me building together, not running parallel lives.

Marriage changes as life gets heavier. Different pace. Different responsibilities.

If you are not careful, it is easy to drift.

I have seen that happen, slowly, quietly.

Two people moving in different directions without meaning to.

I do not want that.

So we are building something shared. A life that both of us are inside of.

A lot of that work is not visible, but it is what everything else will sit on later.

At Home

At home, this becomes clear, even in small moments.

Our kids are still young enough to want us around. Gabe is learning responsibility. Maura sees things in a way that makes you slow down. Noah moves with the kind of energy that reminds you how fast this all goes.

Watching them makes something obvious.

The most important parts of life are not the fastest ones.

They are the ones that hold.

And most of the time, nothing stops you.

Unless you are paying attention.

The real advantage is not getting ahead.

For my 30th birthday, I had two parties in two cities and probably invited about 75 people.

This year, my 40th, it was just cake and ice cream on my birthday and a small vacation with my five.

I’ve spent much of my life proving myself — educationally, professionally, socially, in the military, in all of these different competitive arenas.

During that time I was often the young guy in the room, working alongside men who had already built careers, reputations, and real scale.

I’m not the youngest guy anymore.

But those years mattered.

Being around accomplished people over long periods of time teaches you things that success itself doesn’t always reveal.

What stands out over time isn’t usually the wins.

It’s the tradeoffs that came with them.

Distance from family.
Health pushed aside.
Pressure that accumulates quietly over time.

Watching that closely leaves an impression.

One thing that becomes clearer as you get older is that your health — physical and mental — is the foundation underneath everything else.

In my thirties I had a few minor health scares.

Nothing catastrophic, but enough to get my attention.

Each one forced me to reconsider what I was doing and how I was doing it.

They changed my routines.
They changed my priorities.
They changed how seriously I take the basics.

Because if your health slips, everything else eventually follows.

At forty, that reality doesn’t feel abstract anymore.

It feels structural.

You start to understand that the real goal isn’t simply building something impressive.

It’s building a life that can actually sustain it.

In my twenties, I said yes to opportunity.

In my thirties, I said yes to momentum.

But I also spent much of my thirties building something else — a flywheel that integrates my life.

Family.
Work.
Health.
Capital.
Community.

Each part reinforcing the others instead of competing with them.

At forty, I select.

I’ve come to think one of the quiet risks of modern success is that you can win in visible ways while losing in structural ones.

I don’t want to win professionally and lose structurally.

So the lines are clear.

No to growth that fractures my home.
No to money that carries hidden erosion.
No to rooms that reward performance over substance.
No to drift.

And equally clear:

Yes to presence while my kids still want me near.
Yes to strength and durability.
Yes to long-horizon decisions that compound quietly.
Yes to building something that extends beyond my own life.

Raising the kids has made this practical.

Gabe is sensitive to noise. Loud environments drain him. That isn’t weakness. It’s attentiveness. I share it. I trained myself to override it.

Maura feels everything directly. She doesn’t mute it.

Noah runs toward the world without hesitation.

Through them, I see both who I was and who I adapted into.

That matters.

My relationship with Kerrin feels different at this stage.

Less about proving.
More about building.
More steady.
More deliberate.

I feel like I’m just getting started.

But the approach is different now.

Scale without fragmentation.

If I read this at fifty, I want a simple answer.

Did I hold the line?
Did my family feel stable because of me?
Did I grow without drifting?
Did I build strength instead of borrowing it?

I don’t view 40 as a midpoint - I see it as a decision.

The next decade will show how I decided.

Several people I respect disagreed. Some raised constitutional concerns about war powers. Others questioned whether another Middle East escalation makes sense when Americans are struggling with rising costs and economic uncertainty at home.

Those are serious arguments. They deserve to be acknowledged.

In fact, I share some of those instincts.

I was vocally opposed to the Iraq War. That disagreement shaped much of my political thinking through the 2000s. Like many Americans, I watched what happens when military success is not matched with a clear strategic end state.

That experience matters.

But I do not see this situation as the same.

And after thinking through the strategic picture, I still believe the decision was the right one.

Why It Matters

Deterrence abroad, industrial capacity, and domestic stability are connected.

A country cannot sustain credible power if adversaries believe it lacks the will to act.

But it also cannot sustain long-term competition if its own citizens lose confidence in the economic and political system behind that power.

The longer version

Iran has organized its foreign policy around confrontation with the United States and its allies for more than four decades.

Through proxy groups across the Middle East, missile development, and nuclear ambitions, the regime has steadily expanded its ability to threaten regional stability and American forces.

At some point deterrence has to be real.

If a government can expand missile programs, pursue nuclear capability, and fund proxy warfare without consequence, the incentives only compound.

But the strategic picture goes beyond Iran itself.

Iran increasingly operates within a broader alignment that includes Russia and China.

The United States is entering a period of renewed great-power competition. Decisions in regional conflicts cannot be evaluated in isolation anymore. They have to be understood in the context of a wider strategic contest over industrial capacity, technological leadership, and global influence.

And modern conflict is increasingly shaped by industrial math.

Missiles and drones can often be produced far more cheaply and rapidly than the defensive systems designed to intercept them. Some estimates suggest Iran may now be producing more than one hundred ballistic missiles per month, while the United States can manufacture only a handful of the most advanced interceptor systems in the same time frame.

That imbalance creates a dangerous strategic trap.

If an adversary can force the United States to expend expensive defensive munitions faster than we can replace them, deterrence can gradually erode through industrial attrition.

China understands this dynamic well.

One way to constrain the United States in a future conflict is to create persistent instability in regions that consume American attention, military resources, and weapons stockpiles.

The Middle East is one of those pressure points.

Reducing Iran’s ability to project power disrupts that strategy. It also signals to other adversaries that the United States is still willing to act when deterrence is being tested.

But critics of the strike are right about one important thing.

Military success does not automatically produce strategic success.

The United States demonstrated overwhelming military capability in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Those conflicts were decided quickly on the battlefield. The political outcomes took decades and remain far more complicated.

That history matters.

The real question is not whether striking Iran was justified in the moment.

The real question is whether there is a clear strategic end state.

Because the pacing challenge for the United States remains China.

Actions in Iran, Venezuela, or elsewhere only make sense if they ultimately strengthen America’s position in that larger competition.

Energy access, supply chains, and control over critical resources are all part of the same strategic map. Limiting hostile regimes from converting energy wealth into geopolitical leverage shapes the balance of power long before a conflict ever begins.

Another challenge in moments like this is that our politics have become so polarized that serious strategic debate is difficult.

For nearly a decade, much of the Democratic Party’s national security posture has been shaped primarily in opposition to Donald Trump. That dynamic has sometimes boxed the party into reflexively opposing actions that, under a different president, might have received bipartisan support.

To be clear, many of the concerns being raised about escalation, war powers, and strategic clarity are valid. Those questions should always be asked.

But when the debate centers on the president rather than the strategy, the country risks losing sight of the geopolitical problem itself.

There is another truth that often gets lost in national security debates.

Most Americans do not feel less secure because of Iran.

They feel less secure because their economic foundation feels unstable.

Housing costs more.

Food costs more.

Energy costs more.

Childcare costs more.

You cannot sustain external projection of power if the middle of your country feels hollowed out.

The real infrastructure of American power is not just missiles and carriers.

It is the industrial base, the energy system, and the confidence of the people who live under it.

The competition of this century will ultimately be decided by systems.

Industrial systems.

Energy systems.

Technological systems.

Political systems that people still trust.

Missiles and carriers matter.

But they sit on top of something deeper.

The strength of the American industrial base.

The resilience of its energy supply.

And the confidence of its citizens that the system they live under is still capable of delivering a better future.
