Americans have been taught one of the most consequential myths in our national mythology: that because we hold elections, power belongs to the people.

It is a comforting story.

We vote. Votes are counted. Winners take office. Therefore, we are a democracy.

But democracy is not simply the existence of elections. Democracy is a theory about where power resides. It presumes that ordinary people possess meaningful authority over the institutions that govern their lives. It requires more than access to a ballot. It requires that political participation remain meaningful even when those already possessing power dislike the outcome.

And that is where the American story becomes considerably more complicated.

Because from its beginning, the United States has simultaneously developed two competing political traditions:

democracy and domination.

One says power belongs to the people.

The other has spent centuries deciding which people count.

And whenever the expansion of democracy has seriously threatened established racial, economic, or political power, America has demonstrated an extraordinary capacity to move the goalposts.

That is what we are witnessing again.

The Goalposts Are Moving

In March 2026, President Donald Trump issued an executive order seeking significant changes to the administration of federal elections. Among other things, the order directed federal agencies to develop a nationwide list of verified adult U.S. citizens and contemplated a new role for the U.S. Postal Service in determining which voters could receive mail ballots.

Federal Judge Indira Talwani subsequently blocked key provisions, concluding that the president did not possess the constitutional authority he was attempting to exercise. A later injunction prevented the Postal Service from implementing the proposed restrictions nationwide for the 2026 midterm elections. The Trump administration has defended its efforts as measures intended to enforce election laws and protect election integrity and has continued challenging the rulings.

We should certainly debate the particulars of those policies. We should debate election security. We should debate constitutional authority.

But I am interested in the deeper question beneath all of them:

Who gets to determine the conditions under which democracy operates?

Because controlling the rules governing political participation is itself a form of political power.

And this struggle did not begin with Donald Trump.

America has been having this fight since its founding.

America Was Never Born as a Full Democracy

We often talk about American democracy as though it emerged fully formed in 1776 and has occasionally malfunctioned ever since.

That is historically backwards.

America did not begin as an inclusive democracy and subsequently develop racial inequality.

Racial hierarchy helped determine who constituted the political community in the first place.

Enslaved Africans were not merely denied the vote. They were property.

Indigenous peoples were dispossessed while a settler government expanded across their lands.

Women were excluded from the electorate.

Citizenship itself was racialized.

And in Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness, I examine how American political, legal, judicial, economic, educational, and cultural institutions developed alongside enormous structural advantages for people classified as White and the exclusion, marginalization, and subjugation of non-White populations—most violently Black people.

This distinction matters.

White supremacy did not corrupt an originally racially democratic America. White supremacy helped determine who counted as part of the democracy in the first place.

The country proclaimed liberty while practicing enslavement.

It proclaimed equality while legally manufacturing racial hierarchy.

It proclaimed government by the people while excluding enormous numbers of people from governing.

These were not minor contradictions around the edges of American democracy.

They were central to its construction.

Black Freedom Has Repeatedly Moved the Goalposts

Look at what happened after emancipation.

Black people became citizens.

Black men acquired constitutional voting rights.

Black political participation exploded during Reconstruction.

Black men held public office. Black communities organized politically. Black voters participated in biracial political coalitions. For a brief period, the possibilities of American democracy expanded dramatically.

And then came the counterattack.

Violence.

Terror.

Poll taxes.

Literacy tests.

Grandfather clauses.

White primaries.

Disenfranchisement.

Jim Crow.

The lesson is important.

When the existing rules began producing political possibilities incompatible with white domination, the rules changed.

The same nation that insisted government derived its legitimacy from the consent of the governed developed elaborate mechanisms for determining whose consent would actually count.

This is why the history of Black voting rights should not merely be understood as Black people trying to gain admission into American democracy.

It is the history of Black people forcing America to become more democratic than its original power structure intended it to be.

And every major expansion of Black political power has generated a corresponding struggle over the boundaries of democracy itself.

Bobby Wright: Stop Studying Only the Oppressed

This is where the work of Dr. Bobby E. Wright becomes indispensable.

Wright’s work demands that we stop examining only the people subjected to racial domination and begin examining the psychology of those who construct and maintain the system.

That inversion is profound.

American racial discourse constantly asks:

Why are Black people angry?

Why are Black people distrustful?

Why do Black people protest?

Why do Black people organize around race?

Why do Black people believe the system is unfair?

But Wright’s framework demands another set of questions.

Why was a nation supposedly committed to liberty willing to enslave human beings for centuries?

Why did Black citizenship produce racial terror?

Why did Black voting require federal protection?

Why has Black advancement so consistently been followed by organized backlash?

Why does equality repeatedly provoke efforts to restore hierarchy?

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I argue that American institutions repeatedly transform domination into respectable language—law, policy, order, neutrality, merit—while preserving underlying structures of power. The vocabulary evolves. The institutional mechanisms evolve. Yet the underlying compulsion toward control can reproduce itself.

Wright gives us permission to ask whether the pathology lies not with those demanding freedom, but with a social order that repeatedly experiences their freedom as dangerous.

Frances Cress Welsing: When Equality Feels Like Loss

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing pushes the psychological inquiry deeper.

Welsing understood white supremacy not merely as prejudice or interpersonal hostility, but as a global system of power structured around fear, insecurity, survival, reproduction, and control.

Whatever one concludes about every component of her theory, her framework poses an extraordinarily useful question:

What happens psychologically when a group accustomed to dominance begins to experience equality?

Because equality does not necessarily feel like equality to someone accustomed to supremacy.

It can feel like loss.

If I have historically possessed disproportionate political influence, equality means losing some of that advantage.

If my group has enjoyed disproportionate economic resources, redistribution of opportunity can feel like dispossession.

If institutions have historically reflected my identity, sharing institutional power can feel like displacement.

If I have been accustomed to setting the rules, having to negotiate the rules can feel like subordination.

This is one of the great psychological paradoxes of supremacy:

When domination has been normalized, equality can be experienced as oppression.

And democracy becomes dangerous precisely because authentic democracy contains uncertainty.

You do not control what everyone else believes.

You do not control how everyone else votes.

You do not control demographic change.

You do not control which groups organize.

You cannot guarantee that political institutions will always produce outcomes favorable to you.

Domination seeks certainty. Democracy requires surrendering some of it.

White supremacy, by definition, cannot fully surrender that certainty because white supremacy is about domination—not democracy.

Amos Wilson: Stop Following the Rhetoric. Follow the Power.

Dr. Amos Wilson helps us move from psychology to political economy.

Wilson consistently forces us toward the question that polite political discourse often avoids:

Who actually has power?

Not merely who occupies an office.

Who controls resources?

Who owns?

Who employs?

Who finances?

Who controls institutions?

Who determines what knowledge is legitimate?

Who defines the problem?

Who writes the rules?

Who selects the referees?

And, perhaps most importantly:

Who possesses enough power to change the rules when the existing rules stop serving their interests?

That question brings us directly back to democracy.

Because power does not merely determine who wins the game.

Power determines who writes the rules, who selects the referees, where the goalposts are placed—and whether the goalposts are moved when the existing rules produce an unacceptable result.

That is considerably more consequential than electoral politics alone.

Because political power exists alongside economic power.

And this is where capitalism enters the conversation.

One Person, One Vote. But Not One Person, One Dollar.

Americans are taught that we possess roughly equal political standing.

One citizen.

One vote.

But capitalism makes no comparable promise about economic power.

One person can possess a few hundred dollars.

Another can possess a few hundred billion.

Those two people may each technically receive one ballot, but pretending they therefore possess equivalent power in American society requires an extraordinary suspension of disbelief.

Money purchases more than things.

Money purchases access.

Money purchases time.

Money purchases lawyers.

Money purchases lobbyists.

Money purchases media.

Money finances political organizations.

Money supports think tanks.

Money funds campaigns and political advocacy.

Money can purchase companies that control information.

Money can survive recessions, lawsuits, unemployment, medical crises, and political transitions that financially devastate working people.

And wealth reproduces itself.

So, we have constructed a political system that tells working people they possess democratic power while embedding that system inside an economic structure capable of producing extraordinary concentrations of private power.

This creates a fundamental tension.

The ballot distributes political voice horizontally while capital accumulates power vertically.

And eventually we have to ask:

Can extraordinary concentrations of economic power coexist indefinitely with political equality without distorting it?

Follow the Money. Follow the Power.

This is where Americans have been profoundly miseducated about class.

Millions of working-class people have been encouraged to identify psychologically with billionaires rather than materially with other working people.

We are divided racially.

Divided politically.

Divided geographically.

Divided by religion.

Divided by immigration status.

Divided by gender.

Divided by sexuality.

Divided into competing cultural tribes.

And while we fight one another, wealth continues accumulating upward.

Working people are told that the person struggling beside them is their enemy while enormous concentrations of capital remain largely beyond democratic accountability.

That arrangement is not accidental.

Because divided populations are easier to govern than organized ones.

And racial hierarchy has historically been one of America’s most effective technologies for producing that division.

Whiteness offered poor and working-class Europeans a psychological status that could exist even when they possessed little economic power.

You may not own the plantation.

But you are not Black.

You may not control the corporation.

But you can identify with the people who do.

You may be economically exploited.

But racial hierarchy provides somebody beneath you upon whom frustration, fear, and resentment can be projected.

And therefore, racial supremacy and economic hierarchy do not merely coexist.

Historically, they have often reinforced one another.

The Minions of Empire

This is why I increasingly think we have to interrogate the story Americans are told about our own political power.

Working people produce enormous amounts of the country’s wealth.

We teach the children.

Drive the buses.

Deliver the packages.

Staff the hospitals.

Build the buildings.

Maintain the infrastructure.

Care for the elderly.

Stock the stores.

Answer the phones.

Clean the offices.

Process the paperwork.

Produce the goods.

Fight the wars.

And then we are encouraged to understand ourselves primarily as consumers rather than as the human beings upon whose labor the entire system depends.

We become minions in an empire whose benefits flow disproportionately upward while its burdens are distributed downward.

And then every few years, we are invited to vote.

Again, I am not saying voting is meaningless.

Quite the opposite.

Voting matters precisely because political power matters.

But voting alone cannot neutralize concentrated economic, institutional, racial, and informational power.

Democracy cannot simply be something we perform on Election Day.

It must describe the distribution of power itself.

If Voting Did Not Matter, Nobody Would Fight This Hard Over It

And this is where I refuse political nihilism.

Some people will look at this history and conclude:

Then why vote?

If money controls everything, why participate?

If white supremacy adapts, why bother?

I believe that conclusion profoundly misunderstands the history.

If voting were meaningless, powerful people would not spend so much time fighting over who gets to do it, how they do it, where they do it, what identification they need, when ballots must arrive, how districts are drawn, which voters remain on registration rolls, and which institutions control election administration.

The current fight over mail voting demonstrates precisely how consequential control over electoral machinery remains. The Trump administration argues its efforts are designed to enforce existing election laws and protect election security; its opponents have challenged those measures as unconstitutional restrictions on voting, and federal courts have blocked significant portions of the administration’s approach.

Whatever one’s partisan affiliation, pay attention to the larger fact:

People with power fight intensely over the rules governing political participation because those rules affect power.

The relentless struggle over the ballot is evidence not of its irrelevance, but of its importance.

Black Americans have understood this better than most.

Our Ancestors Knew What the Vote Meant

Black people were beaten for trying to vote.

Fired from jobs.

Evicted.

Threatened.

Terrorized.

Murdered.

Churches were bombed.

Organizers disappeared.

Families placed themselves in danger.

People marched knowing police were waiting for them.

They did not endure these things because a ballot was a magical piece of paper.

They understood that political participation could become organized Black power.

Voting could determine sheriffs.

Judges.

Prosecutors.

School boards.

Legislatures.

Governors.

Members of Congress.

Presidents.

Laws.

Budgets.

Public resources.

The people defending white supremacy understood this too.

Our ancestors did not bleed because voting was meaningless.

They bled because somebody understood exactly what might happen when Black people acquired political power.

Democracy Is Not Something We Have. It Is Something We Fight to Create.

Perhaps this is the myth we finally need to surrender.

America is not simply a democracy because America calls itself one.

A nation does not become democratic by declaration.

Democracy is measured by the distribution of power.

By who can participate.

By whose participation matters.

By whose interests’ institutions protect.

By whether political equality can survive economic inequality.

By whether people historically excluded from power can acquire it without the rules suddenly changing.

By whether those accustomed to domination can accept outcomes they do not control.

And by whether ordinary people possess enough collective power to hold governments, corporations, institutions, and concentrated wealth accountable.

Dr. Bobby Wright teaches us to examine the psychology of domination.

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing teaches us to examine the fear beneath systems of supremacy.

Dr. Amos Wilson teaches us to stop being hypnotized by rhetoric and examine the distribution of actual power.

And my own work asks us to examine how those psychological impulses become institutionalized—how suspicion becomes law, domination becomes policy, hierarchy becomes normal, and oppression becomes so thoroughly embedded that people begin mistaking the structure for reality itself.

America contains democratic institutions.

America also contains powerful systems of domination.

Those two realities have been fighting one another from the beginning.

And perhaps the clearest test of which one actually governs us comes when democracy produces something the powerful do not want.

Watch what happens next.

Watch the courts.

Watch the legislatures.

Watch the corporations.

Watch the money.

Watch the maps.

Watch the voter rolls.

Watch the rules.

Watch the goalposts.

Because white supremacy has never fundamentally been about democracy.

It has been about power.

Capitalism has never promised an equal distribution of power.

It has organized the accumulation of capital.

And when racial power, economic power, and political power become concentrated in the same hands, democracy becomes dangerous to those who benefit from the concentration.

That is why democracy cannot merely be inherited.

It has to be defended.

Expanded.

Deepened.

And sometimes wrestled from the hands of people who were perfectly comfortable with democracy—

until democracy threatened their power.

There is something profoundly revealing happening in the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States possesses the most expensive military apparatus humanity has ever constructed.

Aircraft carriers.

Nuclear submarines.

Stealth bombers.

Satellites.

Drones.

Missiles capable of striking targets thousands of miles away.

An intelligence apparatus spanning the globe.

Military installations throughout the Middle East.

And yet one narrow body of water—approximately twenty-one miles wide at its narrowest point—has exposed an uncomfortable truth:

The ability to destroy is not the same thing as the ability to control.

That distinction matters.

Because Donald Trump has built much of his political identity around the mythology of domination.

He promised strength.

He promised winning.

He promised that America’s enemies would fear us.

He repeatedly suggested that overwhelming military force could compel adversaries to submit.

Iran has now confronted that mythology with geography.

And geography does not care about political branding.

The Most Important Twenty-One Miles in the World

Before the current war, roughly twenty million barrels per day of crude oil and petroleum products routinely moved through the Strait of Hormuz. About one-fifth of global liquefied natural gas trade also passed through it.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration has called Hormuz the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint.

There is a reason.

Saudi Arabia.

The United Arab Emirates.

Kuwait.

Iraq.

Qatar.

Iran.

Much of the energy exported from the Persian Gulf must pass through this tiny maritime corridor before reaching the rest of the world.

There are pipelines capable of bypassing some of it.

But there is no easy substitute for Hormuz.

That makes the strait more than geography.

It is leverage.

And leverage is power.

America Has Confused Firepower With Power

This is where the psychology becomes fascinating.

American political culture has been trained to understand power primarily through domination.

Who has the largest military?

Who possesses the most weapons?

Who can destroy the most targets?

Who can project force the farthest?

By those measures, the United States remains extraordinarily powerful.

But power has never been one-dimensional.

A farmer controls food.

A worker controls labor.

A debtor may possess leverage over a creditor who cannot afford the debtor’s collapse.

A geographically positioned nation may control access to something vastly more valuable than its military budget would suggest.

And a relatively narrow waterway can constrain a superpower.

This is precisely what Hormuz has demonstrated.

Before the war, approximately 130 to 140 ships reportedly passed through the strait each day. Earlier this month, Reuters reported traffic falling on one day to six vessels.

Six.

The United States has not lost its aircraft carriers.

It has not lost its missiles.

It has not lost its military bases.

It has encountered something more psychologically destabilizing:

the limits of what those things can accomplish.

The Empire Cannot Bomb Geography

America can bomb Iran.

It cannot bomb away the Strait of Hormuz.

It can destroy military installations.

It cannot redesign the Persian Gulf.

It can threaten ships.

It cannot manufacture an alternative maritime geography.

It can destroy bridges.

It cannot force commercial insurers to decide that shipping through a war zone is safe.

It can escort tankers.

It cannot guarantee that every tanker owner, energy company, crew, insurer, and government will accept the risk.

That distinction is enormous.

And it helps explain why Trump’s rhetoric has become increasingly grandiose as the strategic problem has become increasingly difficult.

When material control diminishes, rhetorical control intensifies.

That is not unusual.

It is psychologically predictable.

Welsing and Compensatory Power

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing described white supremacy as a compensatory behavioral system operating through economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex, and war.

The key word is compensatory.

When actual control becomes uncertain, the performance of control becomes more important.

When dominance is challenged, dominance must be demonstrated.

When superiority becomes questionable, superiority must be announced more loudly.

This is why I believe Hormuz must be analyzed psychologically as well as geopolitically.

The United States is confronting something its imperial identity has historically struggled to tolerate:

a limit.

And limits are psychologically intolerable to systems organized around omnipotence.

Trump Has Now Said the Quiet Part Out Loud

Trump’s rhetoric has recently gone even further.

He has publicly suggested that after defeating Iran, the United States could declare the Strait of Hormuz American territory.

Think about the psychology embedded in that proposition.

A strategic waterway thousands of miles from the continental United States becomes difficult for America to control.

The response?

Perhaps America should own it.

That is not merely geopolitical bravado.

That is colonial imagination.

When another people’s geography frustrates imperial objectives, the imperial mind imagines possession as the solution.

The proposition belongs to an ancient tradition:

If the land contains something we require, our need becomes a justification for authority over it.

Europe used this logic across Africa.

Across Asia.

Across the Americas.

Across the Caribbean.

Indigenous land became European land.

African labor became European property.

Natural resources became imperial commodities.

Trade routes became imperial possessions.

Trump’s fantasy regarding Hormuz therefore does not emerge from nowhere.

It emerges from a political imagination centuries in development.

Amos Wilson: Power Is Not What You Possess

Dr. Amos Wilson’s analysis of power is especially useful here.

Power is not merely possession.

It is the capacity to produce outcomes.

You may possess extraordinary resources and still fail to produce the outcome you desire.

That is the distinction America repeatedly avoids.

The United States possessed overwhelming military superiority in Vietnam.

It left Vietnam.

The United States possessed overwhelming military superiority in Afghanistan.

Twenty years later, the Taliban returned to power.

Military superiority and political control are not synonyms.

Iran does not need a military larger than America’s.

It does not need more aircraft carriers.

It does not need a larger defense budget.

It merely needs enough capability to make the cost of American objectives unacceptable.

That is asymmetrical power.

And empires routinely underestimate it because imperial psychology encourages them to measure opponents using their own definitions of strength.

Fanon Understood the Colonial Problem

Frantz Fanon understood that colonial systems construct themselves around an illusion of permanence.

The colonizer appears omnipotent because the institutional order has been constructed to make domination appear natural.

But the illusion lasts only while the colonized accept the terms upon which power is measured.

Once resistance begins, something psychologically devastating occurs.

The colonizer discovers that authority and obedience are not the same thing.

You can possess authority and still encounter refusal.

You can possess weapons and still encounter resistance.

You can possess wealth and still encounter leverage.

You can possess military superiority and still fail to control outcomes.

This is the humiliation at the center of the colonial encounter.

The supposedly omnipotent discovers dependency.

The Global Economy Is America’s Vulnerability Too

There is another irony here.

For generations, the United States helped construct a global economic system built around interconnected markets.

Oil.

Shipping.

Banking.

Insurance.

Trade.

Supply chains.

International finance.

That system helped produce extraordinary American wealth.

But interdependence works both ways.

If approximately one-fifth of the world’s energy trade must navigate a geographically constrained region, disruption there does not remain there.

It moves.

Into gasoline prices.

Airline tickets.

Shipping costs.

Manufacturing.

Food prices.

Inflation.

Household budgets.

Political approval ratings.

In April, amid disruption through Hormuz, Brent crude briefly reached approximately $118 per barrel.

This is what empire often forgets:

The systems through which it exercises power also create dependencies.

Globalization did not eliminate geography.

It magnified it.

Bobby Wright and the Refusal to Reassess

This is where Dr. Bobby Wright’s work becomes particularly important.

What happens when a system encounters evidence that its behavior is failing?

A psychologically healthy system reassesses.

What assumptions were wrong?

What strategy failed?

What information was ignored?

What needs to change?

A pathological system does something different.

It projects.

It blames.

It escalates.

It punishes.

It doubles down.

Instead of asking whether the strategy itself produced the crisis, it interprets resistance as evidence that greater force is required.

This is precisely the danger of malignant power.

Failure does not produce reflection.

Failure produces escalation.

Iran Does Not Have to Defeat America

This may be the most important point.

Iran does not have to defeat the United States militarily.

That framing itself reflects American assumptions.

Iran merely has to prevent America from achieving its objectives at an acceptable cost.

Those are entirely different propositions.

This is how asymmetric conflicts work.

A materially weaker power does not defeat an empire by becoming the empire.

It changes the price of domination.

That price may be measured in casualties.

Money.

Oil.

Inflation.

Political instability.

International legitimacy.

Military exhaustion.

Time.

Or uncertainty.

Empires possess enormous resources.

But they rarely possess unlimited patience.

The Strait Has Become a Psychological Mirror

Hormuz is therefore more than a battlefield.

It is a mirror.

America looks into it and sees something it does not want to see.

Dependency.

Limitation.

Vulnerability.

Interconnection.

The impossibility of controlling every outcome.

Those realities conflict with the mythology of American exceptionalism.

We are supposed to dominate.

We are supposed to dictate terms.

We are supposed to possess escalation dominance.

We are supposed to determine when wars begin and when they end.

But Iran has demonstrated that another nation can possess leverage capable of disrupting America’s preferred timeline.

That is precisely why this moment matters.

Trump’s Greatest Weakness Is His Definition of Strength

Donald Trump interprets almost every human interaction through dominance.

Someone wins.

Someone loses.

Someone submits.

Someone controls.

Someone is humiliated.

This worldview may occasionally produce leverage in transactional negotiations.

It is extraordinarily dangerous when governing international relations.

Nations have memory.

They have constituencies.

They have pride.

They have geography.

They have allies.

They have internal politics.

They have interests that cannot simply be bullied away.

Diplomacy exists precisely because sustainable international relationships cannot be constructed entirely through domination.

Yet Trump repeatedly treats diplomacy as though it were a real-estate negotiation in which one party must leave the room humiliated.

That may produce a headline.

It does not necessarily produce peace.

The Empire That Cannot Accept “No”

Perhaps this is the deeper pathology.

American empire has historically struggled with refusal.

Indigenous nations refused removal.

They were attacked.

Enslaved Africans refused enslavement.

They were terrorized.

Colonized populations refused American domination.

They were described as insurgents.

Countries reject American geopolitical demands.

They become threats.

The specific histories differ enormously, and they should not be collapsed into one another.

But the recurring psychological question deserves examination:

What happens when America is told no?

Too often, the answer has been:

Punishment.

Sanctions.

Isolation.

Destabilization.

Intervention.

War.

The assumption underneath each is remarkably similar.

America possesses the right to establish the terms.

Resistance becomes the offense.

And Now Hormuz Says No

Twenty-one miles of water have challenged the mythology of limitless American power.

Not because America suddenly became powerless.

It has not.

The United States remains extraordinarily powerful.

But extraordinary power is not omnipotence.

That distinction may be the most important lesson of this war.

America can destroy Iran.

Iran can impose extraordinary costs upon America and the global economy.

Both statements can simultaneously be true.

That is what mature leadership must understand.

The purpose of diplomacy is not surrender.

It is recognizing reality before reality imposes itself through catastrophe.

The Question Is Whether America Can Learn

The Strait of Hormuz has not broken America.

It has broken an illusion.

The illusion that enough military power eliminates vulnerability.

The illusion that domination produces obedience.

The illusion that economic interdependence only benefits the empire.

The illusion that smaller nations possess no meaningful leverage against larger ones.

And perhaps most importantly:

The illusion that possessing the ability to destroy something means possessing the ability to control what happens afterward.

This is where the psychodynamics of empire become dangerous.

Because an empire confronted with its limits has two choices.

It can develop maturity.

Or it can escalate.

It can recognize interdependence.

Or it can seek greater domination.

It can negotiate.

Or it can destroy.

It can redefine strength as the capacity to achieve sustainable outcomes.

Or it can continue defining strength as the capacity to inflict pain.

Donald Trump appears committed to the latter.

And that is precisely why the Strait of Hormuz matters.

The Strait has exposed something that bombs cannot repair.

Something aircraft carriers cannot intimidate.

Something presidential declarations cannot erase.

America is powerful.

America is not omnipotent.

A psychologically healthy nation would understand the difference.

The question before us is whether this one can.

I have been thinking about Jason Arday.

But if I am completely transparent, I have also been thinking about myself.

I have been thinking about what it means to spend a lifetime constructing yourself in a world that teaches Black people—explicitly and implicitly—that simply being will never be enough.

You must achieve.

You must excel.

You must acquire the degrees.

Write the books.

Win the awards.

Build the career.

Become indispensable.

Be articulate.

Be accomplished.

Be respectable.

Be exceptional.

And even then, somewhere in the recesses of your consciousness, you understand something terrifying:

None of it guarantees your safety.

One accusation.

One controversy.

One mistake.

One person determined to investigate every corner of your life.

One institution suddenly frightened by its association with you.

One media cycle.

And the same society that yesterday introduced you as brilliant can tomorrow begin discussing you as though your entire existence were fraudulent.

That is what I have been thinking about since learning of the death of Professor Jason Arday.

And it frightens me because I understand far too much of it.

This Is Not an Essay About Whether Jason Arday Was Perfect

I want to establish something at the beginning.

There were serious allegations concerning portions of Jason Arday’s academic work. Those allegations deserve to be evaluated fairly.

Academic integrity matters.

Accountability matters.

Evidence matters.

But accountability and annihilation are not synonymous.

Investigation and dehumanization are not synonymous.

Scrutiny and public bloodletting are not synonymous.

And this is precisely where my scholarship on anti-Blackness becomes relevant.

In Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness, I argue that Black people frequently experience something beyond ordinary scrutiny.

We experience hyper-scrutiny.

There is often a need to locate the defect.

Find the inconsistency.

Discover the deficiency.

Identify the thing that proves the Black person was never as intelligent, talented, ethical, accomplished, deserving, or extraordinary as everyone had been led to believe.

There is almost a bloodthirst to it.

And once the hunt begins, the original question can become secondary.

The person becomes the investigation.

Their biography becomes evidence.

Their personality becomes evidence.

Their accomplishments become suspicious.

Their relationships become suspicious.

Their mistakes become character.

Their entire life becomes discoverable.

The objective gradually moves from:

Did this person do something wrong?

to:

Was this person ever who we thought they were?

Those are profoundly different questions.

The Violence of Becoming Exceptional

Black children learn very early that achievement can function as protection.

Our parents tell us we have to work twice as hard.

Our communities celebrate educational accomplishment because generations before us were legally prohibited from accessing many of the institutions we now enter.

So we run.

And run.

And run.

Degree.

Promotion.

Award.

Book.

Title.

Appointment.

Recognition.

Another accomplishment.

Another credential.

Another demonstration that we belong.

I know this race intimately.

I know what it feels like to build an identity around achievement.

I know what it means to have people celebrate your scholarship, invite you into institutions, praise your analysis, purchase your books, seek your expertise, place you on stages—and simultaneously understand how conditional institutional admiration can be.

That is why Arday’s story touches something extraordinarily personal in me.

Because when achievement becomes one of the mechanisms through which marginalized people establish safety, an attack upon achievement can begin to feel like an attack upon existence itself.

If the degrees are questioned...

If the scholarship is questioned...

If the reputation is questioned...

If the accomplishments are questioned...

If the institution that once celebrated you begins investigating you...

What remains?

Who are you when the scaffolding through which society taught you to establish your value begins collapsing?

That is not merely a professional crisis.

It can become an existential one.

Yesterday’s Prodigy Becomes Today’s Villain

The transformation is what I find so psychologically disturbing.

When Arday was appointed Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge in 2023, he was celebrated internationally.

He had reportedly been nonverbal until age eleven.

He had learned to read and write relatively late.

He was autistic.

He became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge’s history.

His story became inspirational.

The establishment loved the story.

Until suddenly, parts of the establishment did not.

Then the very exceptionalism that had made him fascinating became part of what required interrogation.

How did he accomplish all of this?

Were all these claims accurate?

Was the scholarship really his?

Was the biography what everyone had been told?

Some of those may be legitimate questions.

But we must also ask another:

At what point does accountability become spectacle?

And who receives the privilege of remaining human while being investigated?

Blackness Does Not Permit Ordinary Failure

White mediocrity can be remarkably durable.

White men can have failed businesses, commit sexual assault, be convicted of felonies, and become presidents.

They can preside over disastrous institutions and receive severance packages.

They can publish flawed scholarship and remain scholars.

They can be accused of misconduct and receive second, third, fourth, and fifth acts.

Their failures are frequently individualized.

He made a mistake.

He exercised poor judgment.

He deserves another opportunity.

We have to consider the totality of his career.

Black failure operates differently.

Our mistakes can become racial evidence.

Evidence against affirmative action.

Evidence against diversity.

Evidence against inclusion.

Evidence against Black intellectual capacity itself.

We are not simply permitted to have failed. Our failure is recruited into the prosecution of Black people.

Whiteness affords the privilege of individual imperfection. Blackness is repeatedly burdened with representative perfection.

A Black professor accused of misconduct is therefore rarely allowed simply to be a professor accused of misconduct.

Suddenly, he becomes evidence that “DEI” lowered standards.

Evidence that Cambridge sacrificed merit.

Evidence that Black advancement was fraudulent.

Evidence that the establishment was foolish for believing in him.

The individual Black body becomes a referendum on Black legitimacy.

That is anti-Blackness.

And Then There Is Queerness

There is another dimension I cannot ignore.

The intersection of Blackness and queerness carries its own peculiar psychological burden.

I know this personally.

To be Black is already to navigate a society that has historically constructed Blackness as dangerous, deficient, unintelligent, criminal, pathological, and undeserving.

To also exist outside heterosexual expectations introduces another terrain of judgment.

You learn to read rooms.

You learn when difference is tolerated and when it is punished.

You learn that acceptance can be conditional.

You learn that professional excellence does not necessarily protect you from contempt.

You learn to anticipate rejection before it arrives.

And eventually vigilance can become so habitual that you forget how exhausting vigilance actually is.

That is why intersectionality cannot merely be an academic word.

Bodies experience intersections.

Nervous systems experience intersections.

Human beings carry them.

What Happens When Achievement Becomes Life Support?

This is the question I cannot escape.

What happens when achievement becomes one of the things keeping us alive?

Not biologically.

Psychologically.

When accomplishment becomes proof that the suffering meant something.

That the childhood struggle meant something.

That the racism meant something.

That the homophobia meant something.

That the loneliness meant something.

That all those nights working while everyone else slept meant something.

That surviving hostile institutions meant something.

That proving people wrong meant something.

And then imagine watching the architecture of that meaning collapse publicly.

I understand why that can become psychologically catastrophic.

Perhaps more than I would like to admit.

I Can Relate to Suicide

I need to say this plainly.

I can relate to suicide.

I can relate to reaching moments when the psychological architecture holding a life together becomes overwhelmed.

And I know I am not alone.

Cheslie Kryst.

Stephen “tWitch” Boss.

Don Cornelius.

Chris Lighty.

Ian Alexander Jr.

Different people.

Different lives.

Different circumstances.

Different suffering.

Their deaths should never be collapsed into a single explanation.

But their lives force us to confront something we too often avoid:

Achievement does not immunize Black people from despair.

Fame does not.

Money does not.

Education does not.

Beauty does not.

Professional accomplishment does not.

Sometimes those very accomplishments create another prison because everyone assumes the successful person must be okay.

And the more extraordinary the public identity becomes, the more terrifying its collapse may feel.

What If We Were Allowed Simply to Be Human?

This may ultimately be the question Jason Arday’s death raises for me.

What if Black people did not have to be extraordinary to deserve protection?

What if we could fail without becoming failures?

What if we could make mistakes without our entire biographies being placed on trial?

What if accountability could occur without annihilation?

What if brilliance did not require perfection?

What if institutions that celebrated Black excellence were equally committed to protecting Black humanity when that excellence became complicated?

What if a Black person could fall from a pedestal and simply land on the ground—

rather than being buried underneath it?

Because perhaps the pedestal itself is part of the problem.

The pedestal tells us:

Be exceptional and we will love you.

Be extraordinary and we will celebrate you.

Be inspirational and we will tell your story.

But never disappoint us.

Never contradict the mythology we created around you.

Never reveal complexity.

Never become inconvenient.

Never become human.

Because the same machinery that manufactures Black exceptionalism can become extraordinarily efficient at manufacturing Black disgrace.

Jason Arday Was a Human Being Before He Was a Headline

Before Cambridge.

Before professor.

Before youngest.

Before Black.

Before plagiarism.

Before controversy.

Before resignation.

Before newspaper investigations.

Jason Arday was a human being.

A son.

A friend.

A colleague.

A person with a nervous system.

A person capable of fear.

A person capable of shame.

A person capable of being overwhelmed.

A person whose humanity should never have depended upon whether every sentence he ever wrote, every claim he ever made, or every accomplishment attributed to him survived scrutiny.

Accountability can investigate conduct.

Justice can establish facts.

Institutions can enforce standards.

But none of those things require us to destroy a human being.

That distinction matters to me.

Because I understand what it means to be Black and accomplished in institutions that can celebrate you today and scrutinize you tomorrow.

I understand the relentless demand to achieve.

I understand the desire to prove yourself.

I understand hyper-scrutiny.

I understand what it feels like when people begin pulling at the threads of something you have spent your entire life constructing.

And I understand something else that I wish more people understood:

Sometimes when you attack everything a person has built to explain why their life matters, you may be attacking the very structure that has helped that person remain alive.

That does not eliminate accountability.

It demands humanity.

Jason Arday’s death should force us to ask whether we still know the difference.

And perhaps the most important question is not whether Jason Arday was everything the world once imagined him to be.

Perhaps it is this:

Why did we ever require him to be extraordinary before we decided his life was worthy of care?

“The most dangerous societies are not those that merely possess power. They are those that become psychologically dependent upon demonstrating it.”

When Donald Trump threatened to destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant every time Iran attacked a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, many Americans interpreted his words as strength.

I heard something entirely different.

I heard fragility.

Not military strength.

Psychological fragility.

There is an important difference.

Throughout history, societies have often confused domination with leadership.

Force with wisdom.

Retaliation with courage.

Humiliation with victory.

Trump did not invent this confusion.

He inherited it.

The question is not why Donald Trump speaks this way.

The question is why millions of Americans hear that language and conclude that it reflects strong leadership.

That question cannot be answered by politics alone.

It requires psychology.

Strength or Compulsion?

One of the central questions that has occupied my scholarship is deceptively simple:

What happens when domination becomes a society’s primary definition of strength?

Healthy leadership possesses options.

It can negotiate.

It can listen.

It can compromise.

It can demonstrate restraint.

It can admit error.

It can distinguish between confidence and aggression.

Domination possesses only one language.

Escalation.

Every disagreement becomes a contest.

Every compromise becomes surrender.

Every criticism becomes disrespect.

Every limit becomes humiliation.

Every negotiation becomes a test of masculinity.

That is not confidence.

That is dependency.

Frantz Fanon Saw This Clearly

Frantz Fanon argued that colonialism was not sustained merely through military occupation.

It required a psychology.

The colonizer became psychologically dependent upon superiority.

The colonized became positioned as the permanent object through which that superiority could continually be demonstrated.

Violence therefore served two purposes.

It controlled the colonized.

It reassured the colonizer.

Every empire eventually develops this dependency.

The display of power becomes necessary not because it always achieves strategic objectives, but because it temporarily restores psychological certainty.

Domination becomes emotional regulation.

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and the Compensatory System

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing described white supremacy as a compensatory behavioral system operating simultaneously through economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex, and war.

That word—

compensatory—

deserves careful attention.

Compensation occurs when someone attempts to overcome a perceived deficiency by emphasizing something else.

If an individual feels powerless, they may exaggerate dominance.

If they feel insecure, they may exaggerate certainty.

If they feel inadequate, they may exaggerate superiority.

Welsing argued that white supremacy functions similarly.

Power itself becomes compensatory.

Violence becomes compensatory.

Empire becomes compensatory.

War becomes compensatory.

This does not mean every white person consciously experiences those dynamics.

It means the system repeatedly rewards behaviors that reinforce them.

Trump’s and many of his supporters’ rhetoric fits this pattern remarkably well.

Every perceived insult demands overwhelming retaliation.

Every challenge requires public humiliation of an opponent.

Every disagreement becomes existential.

The objective is not resolution.

The objective is restoration of dominance.

Dr. Bobby Wright and the Psychopathic Racial Personality

Dr. Bobby Wright asked us to examine something many societies avoid asking.

What happens when violence ceases to produce moral conflict?

When domination no longer requires justification?

When cruelty becomes normalized?

Psychopathy is often misunderstood as emotional intensity.

It is often the opposite.

It is emotional absence.

The inability—or unwillingness—to experience empathy sufficient to interrupt harmful behavior.

This is not simply an individual phenomenon.

Institutions may also normalize emotional detachment.

Governments may.

Militaries may.

Corporations may.

Legal systems may.

The question becomes:

What kind of political culture repeatedly rewards leaders who threaten overwhelming violence while dismissing restraint as weakness?

Amos Wilson and the Manufacture of Strength

Dr. Amos Wilson reminded us that power does more than shape institutions.

Power shapes perception.

It teaches people what strength looks like.

What success looks like.

What leadership looks like.

What masculinity looks like.

This is perhaps one of white supremacy’s greatest achievements.

It convinces people that domination is maturity.

That conquest is competence.

That intimidation is confidence.

That retaliation is courage.

That fear equals respect.

Once those associations become culturally embedded, genuinely healthy leadership begins to appear weak.

Compassion appears naïve.

Reflection appears indecisive.

Diplomacy appears cowardly.

The culture begins rewarding precisely the personalities least equipped to govern.

The Colonial Definition of Manhood

Colonial America did not merely conquer land.

It constructed masculinity.

European boys learned that manhood meant ownership.

Ownership of land.

Ownership of labor.

Ownership of women.

Ownership of children.

Ownership of other human beings.

Ownership became identity.

Control became virtue.

Submission became the expected response from everyone beneath them.

This was not accidental.

It was educational.

Generation after generation learned that authority meant command rather than relationship.

The consequences remain with us.

Trump Is Familiar Because America Is Familiar

Donald Trump often appears extraordinary.

In some respects he is.

But psychologically, he is profoundly familiar.

He reflects assumptions embedded deeply within American political culture.

Strength requires dominance.

Winning requires humiliation.

Power requires spectators.

Leadership requires enemies.

Compromise signals weakness.

These assumptions long predate Donald Trump.

Andrew Jackson understood them.

Slaveholders understood them.

Indian fighters understood them.

Segregationists understood them.

Authoritarians always understand them.

Trump simply speaks them aloud.

Healthy Masculinity Is Different

Healthy masculinity does not fear negotiation.

It does not confuse listening with surrender.

It does not require constant demonstrations of power.

It protects without humiliating.

It leads without dominating.

It possesses enough internal security to tolerate disagreement.

Perhaps that is why genuinely secure leaders rarely need to announce their strength.

They demonstrate it through wisdom.

Through restraint.

Through accountability.

Through integrity.

Through courage.

Trump repeatedly demonstrates something else.

The inability to experience limitation without retaliation.

That is not power.

It is dependency masquerading as power.

The Most Dangerous Addiction

Empires rarely collapse because they lose the ability to wage war.

They collapse because they lose the ability to imagine anything besides war.

Violence becomes habitual.

Domination becomes identity.

Retaliation becomes governance.

Eventually every problem begins to resemble a military problem because the society has forgotten how to exercise any other kind of power.

That may be where America finds itself today.

Not because Donald Trump created this condition.

Because he reflects it.

He has become the psychological mirror of a nation that still struggles to distinguish domination from leadership.

Until that distinction becomes clear, America will continue mistaking aggression for confidence.

It will continue rewarding leaders whose emotional need to appear powerful exceeds their capacity to govern wisely.

And perhaps that is the most dangerous pathology of all.

Because the greatest threat to a civilization is not the enemy standing outside its borders.

It is the psychological architecture governing those who command it from within.

Most Americans have been taught to understand slavery as an economic institution.

Millions of Africans were kidnapped, enslaved, and forced to labor so that wealthy landowners could produce tobacco, rice, indigo, cotton, and sugar.

That history is true.

But it is incomplete.

Slavery was not simply an economic system.

It was a system of permanent internal warfare.

It was America’s first large-scale domestic counterinsurgency.

Long before the United States projected military power across the globe, it learned how to occupy territory within its own borders.

That territory was the plantation.

The occupied population was African.

The objective was not merely labor.

It was control.

Complete control.

An Occupation Requires Surveillance

Every military occupation depends upon information.

Who is organizing?

Who is communicating?

Who is planning to flee?

Who is teaching others to read?

Who possesses weapons?

Who can be trusted?

Who cannot?

These are not merely military questions.

They became the everyday questions of American slavery.

Slave patrols rode the countryside.

Travel required permission.

Gatherings were monitored.

Movement was restricted.

Letters were intercepted.

Literacy was often criminalized.

Religious meetings were supervised.

The purpose was not simply to punish rebellion after it occurred.

The purpose was to prevent the possibility of organized resistance before it could emerge.

Modern counterinsurgency doctrine speaks about “controlling the population.”

The plantation did precisely that.

Every Plantation Was a Security State

Historians have documented slave patrols as among the earliest organized policing institutions in many Southern colonies and states.

Their responsibilities extended beyond capturing people who escaped.

They inspected passes.

They searched homes.

They dispersed gatherings.

They entered Black communities without invitation.

They exercised violence with extraordinary legal protection.

In other words, policing developed not merely to investigate crime.

It developed to preserve a racial and economic order.

Every plantation functioned as a miniature security state.

Permission governed movement.

Permission governed marriage.

Permission governed family life.

Permission governed work.

Permission governed rest.

Permission governed the body itself.

Terror Was Administrative

Violence during slavery was not random.

It was organized.

Whippings were public.

Executions were public.

Brandings were public.

Families were separated publicly.

The objective extended beyond punishing one individual.

Punishment became communication.

Every scar carried a message.

Every hanging carried a lesson.

Every sale reminded everyone else that resistance possessed consequences extending beyond the individual.

Modern militaries sometimes refer to this as psychological operations.

The plantation perfected it centuries earlier.

Starvation Was Political

Control does not require constant physical violence.

Sometimes it requires dependency.

Food rations.

Housing.

Clothing.

Medical care.

Movement.

Employment.

Every necessity remained controlled by those who exercised power.

Economic deprivation therefore became another instrument of governance.

The enslaved person’s survival depended upon remaining within a system designed to deny genuine autonomy.

The body itself became occupied territory.

Family Separation Was Strategic

Perhaps no tactic reveals the counterinsurgency character of slavery more clearly than family separation.

Children were sold.

Parents were sold.

Spouses were sold.

Siblings disappeared.

Entire kinship networks were dismantled through commerce.

This was not merely profitable.

It was politically effective.

Communities fractured.

Trust weakened.

Resistance became more difficult to organize when families could disappear overnight.

The destruction of family life was therefore not collateral damage.

It became one of the technologies through which slavery sustained itself.

America Learned to Govern Through Fear

Dr. Bobby Wright argued that societies reveal themselves through the behaviors they normalize.

What becomes ordinary?

What becomes acceptable?

What becomes invisible?

Slavery normalized surveillance.

It normalized suspicion.

It normalized collective punishment.

It normalized militarized policing.

It normalized the idea that one population could be governed through perpetual coercion while another experienced freedom.

Those lessons did not disappear in 1865.

Institutions carry memory.

Practices evolve.

Cultures adapt.

But organizational habits often survive the legal systems that originally created them.

The Counterinsurgency Did Not End

Emancipation ended slavery.

It did not end the institutional logic developed under slavery.

Black Codes followed.

Convict leasing followed.

Jim Crow followed.

Lynching followed.

Redlining followed.

Mass incarceration followed.

Different institutions.

Remarkably familiar assumptions.

The question repeatedly remained:

How should the state manage Black mobility?

How should Black communities be monitored?

How should Black political organization be controlled?

How should resistance be discouraged?

Those questions echo through American history.

The Plantation as America’s First Military Laboratory

In Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness, I argue that institutions inherit psychological operating systems.

They learn patterns.

They reproduce assumptions.

They normalize relationships of power.

The plantation was one of America’s first institutional laboratories for governing an internal population through surveillance, discipline, fear, dependency, and legally sanctioned violence.

It was an educational institution for domination.

Generations of white Americans learned what authority looked like.

They learned who could be searched.

Who could be questioned.

Who required documentation.

Who could be stopped.

Who could be beaten.

Who could be sold.

Who could disappear.

Power became ordinary because domination became ordinary.

We Should Ask Different Questions

Perhaps we have been asking the wrong historical question.

Rather than asking whether slavery was primarily economic or primarily racial, perhaps we should also ask:

What governmental technologies were perfected there?

What policing strategies emerged there?

What surveillance practices developed there?

What bureaucratic systems were refined there?

What psychological assumptions about authority were normalized there?

What institutional habits survived long after emancipation?

Those questions do not diminish the economic dimensions of slavery.

They deepen our understanding of its political and institutional significance.

Because if slavery functioned as America’s first domestic counterinsurgency, then it did more than produce wealth.

It taught a nation how to govern through permanent surveillance, racial hierarchy, and organized fear.

That possibility deserves far more attention than it has received.

Trump’s threat to destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant whenever a ship is attacked in the Strait of Hormuz is not an aberration. It is the latest expression of a political culture formed through conquest, racial slavery, forced removal, scorched earth, and the belief that civilian suffering is an acceptable instrument of white power.

Donald Trump has announced a doctrine of arithmetic destruction.

For every ship attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, he says, the United States will destroy one Iranian bridge or power plant, including infrastructure in or near Tehran. The threat is breathtaking not because it introduces something unprecedented into American warfare, but because it states with unusual bluntness what American power has repeatedly practiced: punish the larger population, destroy the material conditions of ordinary life, and call the result strength.

A bridge is not merely steel and concrete.

It carries workers to their jobs.

Children to school.

Patients to hospitals.

Food into cities.

Medicine into communities.

A power plant is not merely an emblem on a military planning map.

It keeps ventilators operating.

It pumps water.

It preserves food.

It regulates heat and cold.

It sustains dialysis, surgery, sanitation, communication, transportation, and nearly every system required for human survival.

International humanitarian law does not permit a government to designate infrastructure for destruction merely because its leaders want to intimidate an adversary. Civilian objects are presumptively protected. A bridge or power plant may become a lawful military objective only under specific conditions, and any attack remains governed by distinction, proportionality, and the obligation to minimize civilian harm. The International Committee of the Red Cross has expressly warned that an electricity network cannot be swept wholesale into the category of military targets simply to weaken an economy, break a population’s will, or force political concessions.

Therefore, Trump’s declaration is not a serious military doctrine.

It is retaliatory spectacle.

It does not evaluate the military purpose of a particular object, the expected civilian consequences, or the proportionality of a particular strike. It preselects categories of infrastructure for destruction and assigns civilian suffering a numerical value: one ship attack equals one bridge or one power plant.

This is violence transformed into bookkeeping.

It is vengeance disguised as strategy.

And it belongs to a much older American tradition.

This Is Not a New American Language

Long before the United States threatened the electrical grid of Tehran, European colonists and American armies learned to make war by attacking the conditions necessary for other people to remain alive.

During seventeenth-century colonial warfare in Virginia, English forces carried out search-and-destroy operations against Native communities, burning settlements and cornfields while colonists continued expanding onto Indigenous lands.

During the Revolutionary era, American soldiers and militias repeatedly attacked Indigenous villages throughout present-day New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Ohio. The National Park Service records that more than one hundred villages were burned and destroyed between 1774 and 1794, with civilians among the dead.

In 1779, George Washington ordered the Clinton-Sullivan campaign against the Haudenosaunee nations. Its goal was not limited to confronting armed warriors. The campaign was designed to destroy principal villages and food supplies, making continued resistance—and continued life—materially impossible.

During the War of 1812 and its aftermath, American forces again carried war into Native homelands, burning villages and fields and leaving civilians homeless and hungry.

In 1863, Kit Carson led a military campaign against the Navajo that destroyed crops, orchards, livestock, and homes. Thousands of Navajo men, women, and children were then forced to walk approximately three hundred miles to a disease-ridden detention site at Bosque Redondo.

In California, state-sanctioned forces entered Yosemite Valley, burned villages and food supplies, and drove Indigenous families from their homes so settlers could occupy the land.

Across these episodes, the operating logic was remarkably consistent:

Do not merely confront the resisting population.

Destroy its food.

Destroy its homes.

Destroy its movement.

Destroy its ecology.

Destroy its ability to reproduce community.

Then describe its surrender as proof of the conqueror’s superiority.

This is the historical architecture underneath Trump’s threat.

He is not inventing a new strategy.

He is repeating an old civilizational reflex: when domination is challenged, widen the field of punishment until the entire society becomes the target.

Racial Slavery Was Also War

The American system of racial slavery must also be understood as organized warfare.

It was war against the body.

War against kinship.

War against memory.

War against language.

War against mobility.

War against reproduction.

War against the possibility of Black sovereignty.

The enslaved person’s labor, sexuality, children, movement, punishment, marriage, and death were regulated for the benefit of people legally classified as white. Slavery was not a regrettable departure from American order. It was one of the principal ways American order was produced.

The United States maintained a domestic slave trade even after Congress prohibited international importation in 1808. Human beings continued to be bought, transported, separated, and sold within the country through a commercial system documented in shipping manifests, court records, and government archives.

Even the constitutional abolition of slavery preserved an exception for involuntary servitude imposed as punishment for crime—a provision through which coerced labor could be reorganized rather than fully extinguished.

In Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness, I describe white power not simply as prejudice but as the accumulated control of legal, educational, economic, political, medical, and cultural institutions. The social order is organized to accumulate authority, protect those who possess it, and omit punishment when white institutions inflict harm. I define white malignant narcissism through traits including exploitation, an extreme need for dominance, aggression, revenge upon criticism, and the absence of remorse.

A nation socialized through conquest and enslavement learns a particular lesson:

Power does not require consent.

Power proves itself by imposing consequences.

The subordinate population’s suffering is not treated as a moral limit. It becomes the language through which domination communicates its seriousness.

Trump’s threat against Iranian infrastructure emerges from this inheritance.

The Compensatory System of White Supremacy

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing defined white supremacy as a global behavioral power system functioning simultaneously through economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex, and war.

Trump’s Iran policy moves through nearly every one of those domains.

Economics: The Strait of Hormuz carries a substantial portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas. Iran’s leverage over the strait demonstrates that military superiority does not automatically produce economic control. Trump’s answer is to threaten the infrastructure upon which Iranian civilians depend.

Entertainment: Warfare is narrated as spectacle—explosions, threats, scorekeeping, triumphal language, and declarations of dominance suitable for television and social media.

Law: International restraints are treated as obstacles to presidential performance rather than obligations binding the use of force.

Politics: Civilian destruction is presented domestically as evidence of decisiveness.

Religion: American violence is continually sanctified through the civic theology of exceptionalism—the belief that the United States acts for order even while producing devastation.

War: Destruction becomes compensatory. When the appearance of American omnipotence is challenged, the answer is not reflection or diplomacy, but an enlarged performance of force.

Welsing’s framework helps us understand why an empire may react to humiliation with disproportionate violence. The violence does not merely seek a military objective. It attempts to restore a threatened self-concept.

The empire must be seen as dominant.

It must be obeyed.

It must not be made to look limited.

It must not be forced to acknowledge dependency, vulnerability, error, or defeat.

When Iran demonstrates that it can disrupt shipping through one of the world’s most economically important waterways, the myth of unilateral American control is wounded. Trump responds as the malignant narcissist responds: not by reassessing the failed strategy, but by fantasizing about retaliatory destruction.

The bridge and the power plant become objects upon which the injured imperial ego may discharge its rage.

Dr. Bobby Wright and the Absence of Moral Conflict

Dr. Bobby E. Wright’s framing of the psychopathic racial personality is indispensable here.

Wright argued that the defining pathology was not confusion about morality but the near absence of ethical conflict when white power confronted Black existence. His analysis described a collective personality capable of appearing civilized and competent while demonstrating callous disregard for the rights and humanity of those placed outside its moral community.

In Wright’s analysis, psychopathy becomes socially consequential because institutions are organized around it. Those who are harmed are expected to keep appealing to the conscience of a system whose behavior suggests that conscience is not the controlling variable.

This distinction matters when evaluating threats against civilian infrastructure.

A government capable of anticipating the predictable consequences of destroying electricity—hospital failures, water disruption, food spoilage, sanitation collapse, preventable disease—and then presenting those consequences as leverage is not merely making a technical military calculation.

It is revealing the boundaries of its empathy.

Humanitarian organizations have warned that attacking power infrastructure can cascade through water systems, healthcare, food distribution, employment, and the basic conditions of civilian life. The ICRC has described war against essential infrastructure as war against civilians.

Yet Trump’s language contains no Iranian nurses.

No babies in neonatal intensive care.

No elderly people dependent upon oxygen.

No families trapped without refrigeration, water, transportation, or medicine.

There are only targets.

This is how dehumanization works.

The civilian population disappears before the bomb arrives.

Fanon: The Colonized World Is Divided Into Compartments

Frantz Fanon understood colonialism as a system that divides humanity into compartments.

One population is granted complexity, interiority, innocence, law, childhood, and grief.

The other is reduced to danger.

The colonizer’s violence is treated as order.

The colonized person’s resistance is treated as pathology.

The colonizer attacks, occupies, confines, disciplines, and dispossesses. When the colonized respond, their response is severed from the history that produced it. The resistance becomes the beginning of the story.

That pattern is visible in discussions of Iran.

Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must be evaluated under international law and condemned when unlawful. The obligations of one side do not disappear because the other side violates them. Human Rights Watch emphasizes that one party’s unlawful conduct does not authorize reciprocal violations.

But the United States cannot begin the moral narrative wherever it finds itself most innocent.

It cannot erase decades of intervention, sanctions, covert action, military encirclement, regime-change politics, proxy conflict, and the current war, then present each Iranian response as an inexplicable eruption from an irrational people.

Fanon teaches us to ask what preceded the visible explosion.

What history has been removed from the frame?

Whose violence is called security?

Whose violence is called terrorism?

Whose dead are individualized?

Whose dead become estimates?

Amos Wilson: Power Determines the Meaning of Reality

Dr. Amos N. Wilson insisted that domination is maintained not only through possession of institutions but through control over perception.

Power defines what counts as violence.

Power defines who began the conflict.

Power defines whose fear is rational.

Power defines whose suffering is regrettable and whose suffering is deserved.

Power names its own aggression defense.

It names resistance provocation.

It names civilian deprivation pressure.

It names coercion negotiation.

My work builds from Wilson’s understanding that schooling, religion, media, law, and culture condition populations to normalize white authority and interpret opposition to that authority as disorder. I describe whiteness as transactional rather than relational—a structure produced through terror and maintained through control, reward, punishment, and narrative.

Trump’s doctrine depends upon this control of language.

Bombing a power plant becomes “retribution.”

Destroying a bridge becomes “deterrence.”

Civilian suffering becomes “pressure.”

Escalation becomes “strength.”

Failure becomes another opportunity for violence.

Wilson’s question would not simply be whether Trump possesses military power.

It would be: Who possesses the power to define the meaning of what he does?

The Saudi Contradiction

The same administration waging war around the stated danger of Iran’s nuclear program has approved a long-term civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia that may leave open a route to domestic uranium enrichment.

The agreement reportedly lacks some of the strongest nonproliferation conditions sought by critics, including the “gold standard” prohibition on enrichment and the IAEA Additional Protocol’s enhanced inspection regime. Supporters emphasize strategic cooperation, commercial opportunities for American companies, and the risk that Saudi Arabia could otherwise partner with China or Russia. Critics warn that domestic enrichment is dual-use technology and may intensify regional proliferation risks.

This contradiction exposes the emptiness of universal moral claims.

Nuclear capability is not treated as inherently unacceptable.

It is treated differently according to who possesses it, who authorizes it, whose commercial interests are served, and whether the state in question remains aligned with American power.

Iranian nuclear capacity is narrated as civilizational danger.

Saudi nuclear enrichment becomes a negotiable commercial and strategic arrangement.

The rule is therefore not simply nonproliferation.

The deeper rule is obedience.

A compliant government may be entrusted with possibilities denied to a defiant one.

That is colonial logic.

The colonizer does not object to power itself.

The colonizer objects to power beyond its supervision.

White Malignant Diabolical Psychopathic Institutional Repression

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I frame the ongoing reproduction of state violence through denial, projection, moral inversion, and legalized indifference. The state refuses to interpret the suffering it produces as evidence against itself. It turns brutality into doctrine and calls repetition precedent.

I call this White Malignant Diabolical Psychopathic Institutional Repression.

It is malignant because domination spreads through systems.

It is diabolical because cruelty is transformed into righteousness.

It is psychopathic because visible human suffering fails to generate sufficient moral restraint.

It is institutional because the behavior is authorized, financed, professionalized, narrated, and repeated through government.

It is repression because the violence seeks not merely to defeat an armed opponent, but to subordinate a population’s political will.

Trump’s threatened equation—one attacked ship, one destroyed bridge or power plant—is a nearly perfect illustration.

There is no individualized determination.

No human consideration.

No evidence that the selected infrastructure is making an effective contribution to military action.

No proportionality analysis.

No distinction between a government and the millions of civilians dependent upon its systems.

Only retaliation.

Only dominance.

Only the ancient belief that suffering will teach the disobedient population to submit.

The Myth of American Strength

Strength without discipline is not strength.

Power without moral restraint is not leadership.

A military that must terrorize civilians to produce political compliance is not displaying confidence. It is admitting strategic failure.

Trump entered this conflict promising dominance. Instead, the war has produced American deaths and injuries, immense expenditures, regional escalation, threats to global shipping, and renewed questions about the limits of U.S. power. Reporting as of July 22 placed the American military death toll at eighteen and the number of wounded above five hundred, while estimated direct costs had risen into the tens of billions of dollars.

Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz has exposed a fundamental reality: military supremacy does not eliminate geographic, economic, and political interdependence.

The United States can destroy.

But destruction cannot guarantee control.

It can bomb a bridge.

It cannot bomb away geography.

It can attack a power station.

It cannot force the world to interpret recklessness as competence.

It can impose catastrophic suffering.

It cannot transform catastrophic suffering into a durable peace.

This is the crisis of white imperial masculinity: it recognizes only two positions—domination and humiliation. Because cooperation feels like weakness, every limit becomes an insult. Every negotiation becomes a contest of manhood. Every challenge demands a theatrical display of power.

The result is not security.

It is compulsion.

America Has Practiced This Before

Indigenous nations were told that destruction was the price of resistance.

Enslaved Africans were told that torture was the price of racial order.

Black communities were told that terror was the price of white peace.

Colonized populations across the world were told that occupation was civilization.

Today, Iranian civilians are being told that their bridges, electricity, water, hospitals, and daily lives may become instruments in America’s effort to discipline their government.

The language changes.

The psychology remains.

American violence continually presents itself as reluctant, defensive, moral, and necessary—even when it attacks the conditions required for civilian survival.

That is the delusion.

And that delusion has become dangerous not only to those whom the United States attacks, but to the United States itself.

In my work, I argue that collective pathology advances cyclically: reform, relapse, and rationalization. Each generation announces that it has transcended the violence of the past while reproducing its underlying logic in new administrative and technological forms.

Trump’s doctrine is not postcolonial.

It is colonialism with drones.

It is the scorched field converted into the electrical grid.

It is the burned village translated into the urban power station.

It is collective punishment delivered through precision-guided weapons and announced through social media.

The Question We Must Ask

The question is not merely whether Donald Trump will order the destruction of an Iranian bridge or power plant.

The deeper question is:

What kind of society hears such a threat and recognizes leadership?

What kind of political culture interprets retaliation against infrastructure as strength rather than evidence of emotional and strategic failure?

What kind of civilization places millions of civilians inside a punishment equation and still calls itself the guardian of freedom?

What kind of people repeatedly confuse the capacity to destroy with the capacity to govern?

Trump is not the creator of this condition.

He is its unfiltered expression.

He is what American exceptionalism sounds like after the language of diplomacy, humanitarianism, and liberal restraint has been stripped away.

The doctrine underneath is brutally simple:

We possess the power.

You will experience the consequences.

Your civilians are not our moral concern.

Your infrastructure is leverage.

Your suffering is instruction.

That is not peacekeeping.

That is not security.

That is not civilization.

It is the theology of conquest, the psychology of collective punishment, and the pathology of whiteness—armed with the most destructive military apparatus on Earth.

And until America accepts the diagnosis, it will continue to call its disease strength.

Every nation develops habits.

Some habits become traditions.

Others become institutions.

Still others become so deeply embedded within the national consciousness that they cease to appear as habits at all.

They become normal.

One of the central questions that has occupied my scholarship is this:

Why does American society repeatedly reproduce systems of racial hierarchy—even after wars, constitutional amendments, landmark legislation, court victories, and social movements seemingly reject those very systems?

If slavery ended in 1865...

Why did Jim Crow emerge?

If Jim Crow formally ended...

Why did new battles over housing, education, criminal justice, voting, and political representation emerge?

If legal segregation fell...

Why do disputes over citizenship, voting rights, district boundaries, educational curricula, immigration, and civil rights continue to dominate American political life?

These questions suggest something deeper than changing policy preferences.

They suggest recurring institutional and psychological patterns.

Throughout Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness and The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I argue that history should not be understood solely as a sequence of legal events. It should also be examined as the transmission of institutional narratives, learned assumptions, and recurring structures of power that continue to shape public life.

Every System Produces the Behavior It Rewards

Institutions do not simply regulate behavior.

They cultivate it.

Reward it.

Normalize it.

Discourage it.

History demonstrates that political systems often reward certain ways of thinking while discouraging others.

That observation applies far beyond race.

It applies to economics.

Education.

Religion.

The workplace.

The judiciary.

Politics.

Every institution teaches.

The question is:

What is it teaching?

The Historical Pattern

America has repeatedly declared itself transformed.

Reconstruction promised a new nation.

The Civil Rights Movement promised another.

Voting Rights legislation represented another turning point.

Each generation proclaimed that America had finally confronted its past.

Yet each generation also encountered new conflicts over political participation, representation, education, citizenship, and equality.

This is not evidence that history never changes.

History clearly does.

It is evidence that institutions often adapt more slowly than laws.

The Architecture of Repetition

One of the insights I draw from my own work—and from scholars such as Frantz Fanon, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, Dr. Bobby Wright, and Dr. Amos Wilson—is that systems of domination often persist not simply because individuals hold prejudiced beliefs, but because institutions continually reproduce assumptions about legitimacy, belonging, competence, and authority.

The language differs.

The legal theories differ.

The political coalitions differ.

But recurring questions remain remarkably familiar.

Who belongs?

Who governs?

Who receives the benefit of the doubt?

Who bears the burden of proof?

Those questions have appeared in different forms throughout American history.

The Psychodynamics

I use the phrase psychodynamics to describe the relationship between inherited social narratives and institutional behavior.

Political conflict rarely concerns policy alone.

It also concerns identity.

Memory.

Status.

Belonging.

Institutions inherit stories from previous generations.

Citizens inherit stories from institutions.

Over time those stories become assumptions.

Assumptions become expectations.

Expectations become political common sense.

One generation may no longer consciously remember the original source of a narrative.

The narrative nevertheless continues to shape institutional behavior.

Why Every Generation Believes It Is Different

Every generation tends to believe it has solved the problems that confronted the generation before it.

Yet history repeatedly demonstrates otherwise.

The mechanisms evolve.

The underlying conflicts often remain.

The names change.

The vocabulary changes.

The institutional forms change.

But many of the debates continue revolving around remarkably similar questions of citizenship, participation, authority, and representation.

That observation should encourage humility.

It reminds us that progress is rarely permanent.

Democracy requires continual maintenance.

The Human Cost

Discussions about institutions sometimes become abstract.

They should not.

Every institutional decision affects human beings.

Families.

Communities.

Children.

Workers.

Students.

Citizens.

The consequences of public policy extend beyond courtrooms and legislatures.

They shape opportunities.

Trust.

Belonging.

Health.

Education.

Economic mobility.

Public confidence.

Democracy ultimately succeeds or fails through the lived experiences of ordinary people.

Beyond Individual Blame

One of the greatest mistakes we make is reducing every historical problem to individual morality.

Individuals matter.

Leadership matters.

Character matters.

But institutions also matter.

Focusing exclusively on individuals can obscure the broader systems through which incentives, expectations, and historical narratives are reproduced.

If institutions continue producing recurring disparities generation after generation, then institutional analysis becomes indispensable.

That does not eliminate personal responsibility.

It broadens our understanding of how enduring patterns emerge.

Where Do We Go From Here?

History offers neither certainty nor inevitability.

It offers perspective.

Understanding recurring institutional patterns does not require believing that change is impossible.

Quite the opposite.

Meaningful reform begins by understanding what we are attempting to reform.

The challenge before America is not merely to pass new legislation or litigate new cases.

It is to examine the assumptions that continue to shape our institutions.

Every generation inherits a constitutional order.

Every generation also inherits a political imagination.

The question is whether we will simply repeat inherited narratives—or develop new ones capable of expanding democratic life.

That work requires historical honesty.

Institutional courage.

Intellectual humility.

And the willingness to ask difficult questions—not only about our past, but about ourselves.

Because ultimately, the future of democracy depends not only on the laws we write.

It depends upon the assumptions we are willing to reconsider.

There is a question I have found myself asking repeatedly over the past several years.

Not simply, “How did Donald Trump become president?”

But rather:

What does Donald Trump’s rise reveal about the psychology of America?

For many commentators, the answer begins and ends with partisanship.

Others blame economics.

Others point to populism.

Still others emphasize media ecosystems or political polarization.

Each explanation contains a measure of truth.

But I believe they stop short of the deeper question.

Donald Trump is not merely a political figure.

He is a psychological phenomenon.

He represents a set of ideas about leadership, authority, competence, legitimacy, and identity that long predate his entry into politics.

To understand Donald Trump, one must first understand America.

To understand America, one must understand whiteness—not simply as a racial identity, but as a historical system of political legitimacy, institutional authority, and presumed competence.

That is the argument I develop throughout Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness and expand in The Psychopathy of Whiteness. There I argue that whiteness in America has functioned not only as a racial category but as an organizing principle that has historically influenced assumptions about leadership, citizenship, expertise, and power.

Leadership Has Never Been Race-Neutral

One of the greatest myths Americans tell themselves is that leadership has always been earned.

History tells another story.

For much of American history, the law itself restricted who could vote, hold office, own property, testify in court, become a citizen, or exercise political power.

Leadership was never simply about merit.

It was also about access.

It was about legal status.

It was about whose judgment society presumed worthy.

The Naturalization Act of 1790 restricted naturalized citizenship to “free white persons.”

That law was not simply about immigration.

It communicated something much deeper.

It suggested that political membership and whiteness were intimately connected in the early Republic.

That assumption echoed through subsequent centuries as the nation wrestled with slavery, Reconstruction, segregation, immigration, voting rights, and civil rights.

The Inheritance of Presumed Competence

Every society develops stories about who looks like a leader.

Who sounds presidential.

Who appears trustworthy.

Who is presumed capable before speaking.

Those stories are not biologically inherited.

They are culturally learned.

They are reinforced through institutions, education, media, law, and repeated exposure.

Over generations, those narratives become so familiar that they often appear “natural.”

But they are not.

They are historical.

They are social.

They are psychological.

One of the recurring themes in my work is that institutions frequently reproduce assumptions they inherited from earlier generations, even as laws and norms evolve.

That insight helps explain why debates over leadership often involve more than résumés or policy positions.

They also involve deeply rooted expectations about identity and authority.

The Case Study

Donald Trump has become one of the most polarizing political figures in modern American history.

His supporters often describe him as decisive, fearless, authentic, and strong.

His critics point to numerous controversies, including his felony convictions, civil judgments, inflammatory rhetoric, and conduct they believe should disqualify someone from the presidency.

Reasonable people disagree sharply about his presidency and his politics.

But regardless of one’s political position, one question deserves serious consideration:

Why do Americans evaluate political competence so differently depending upon who occupies the office?

The question extends beyond any single individual.

American history is filled with leaders whose shortcomings were minimized or forgiven, while others faced far more exacting standards.

The issue is not simply hypocrisy.

It is perception.

It is the psychology through which societies construct legitimacy.

The Psychodynamics of Presumed Leadership

Throughout this Substack series, I have used the phrase The Psychodynamics to describe the relationship between unconscious social narratives and institutional behavior.

Political systems do not merely allocate power.

They also communicate who appears naturally suited to wield it.

Psychological expectations become embedded in institutional life.

Repeated over generations, they shape public perception.

Certain identities become associated with competence before evidence is even considered.

Others are required to continually demonstrate competence merely to receive equal consideration.

This is not simply an individual bias.

It is an institutional pattern.

White Adequacy

One concept I introduce in The Psychopathy of Whiteness is what I describe as the institutional normalization of adequacy.

The argument is not that every white individual benefits equally.

Nor is it that every person of color encounters identical barriers.

Rather, the question is institutional:

What qualities are presumed sufficient?

What shortcomings are forgiven?

When does identity become a substitute for demonstrated excellence?

These questions invite us to examine not only elections but also corporate hiring, university admissions, judicial appointments, media representation, and countless other arenas where assumptions about competence influence opportunity.

A Different Standard

History suggests that Black political leaders, women, and members of other historically marginalized groups have often been expected to meet extraordinarily high standards of preparation, expertise, and performance.

That observation has been explored by scholars across political science, sociology, and organizational psychology.

Whether discussing elected officials, judges, executives, professors, or physicians, many have described a recurring expectation that some individuals must repeatedly prove competence while others begin with a presumption of legitimacy.

That asymmetry deserves serious attention.

It is not merely political.

It is institutional.

America’s Crisis Is Not Simply Political

Many Americans describe the current moment as a constitutional crisis.

Others describe it as a crisis of democracy.

Still others call it a crisis of institutions.

I believe those descriptions capture important aspects of our present condition.

But I would add another.

It is also a crisis of perception.

When societies become unable—or unwilling—to distinguish symbolism from substance, performance from governance, or identity from demonstrated competence, democratic institutions themselves become vulnerable.

The question before us is therefore much larger than one election or one presidency.

It is whether America is prepared to examine the historical narratives that continue to shape its understanding of leadership.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Democracy cannot depend upon inherited assumptions.

It cannot thrive if legitimacy is allocated through historical narratives rather than consistent standards.

If we believe in merit, then merit must apply universally.

If we believe in accountability, then accountability cannot fluctuate according to identity.

If we believe leadership matters, then our evaluation of leadership must be principled enough to withstand our own political preferences.

That work begins with honesty.

It requires us to ask difficult questions about our history.

It asks us to examine not only our institutions but also the stories those institutions continue to tell about power, belonging, and legitimacy.

Only then can we begin constructing a democracy that measures leaders by consistent standards rather than inherited assumptions.

There are moments in history when a single piece of legislation tells us far more than its title suggests.

The SAVE America Act is one of those moments.

Its supporters describe it as an election-integrity measure intended to ensure that only eligible citizens vote in federal elections. Its opponents argue that it risks creating additional barriers for eligible voters. Whatever one’s position on the legislation itself, the debate surrounding it raises a deeper historical question:

Why has the question of who gets to participate in American democracy been one of the nation’s longest-running political struggles?

To understand that question, we must move beyond today’s headlines.

We must travel backward.

Long before there was a Republican Party.

Long before there was a Democratic Party.

Long before there was a Constitution.

Before the Declaration of Independence.

Before the United States itself.

Because the struggle over voting has never simply been about ballots.

It has always been about belonging.

Who belongs?

Who counts?

Who possesses full citizenship?

Who is presumed trustworthy enough to exercise political power?

Those questions did not begin in 2026.

Nor in 1965 with the Voting Rights Act.

Nor in 1868 with the Fourteenth Amendment.

They began in colonial America, where law increasingly distinguished among Europeans, Africans, Indigenous peoples, and others through different legal statuses. Over time, those distinctions became part of the emerging legal and political architecture of what would become the United States.

Throughout American history, debates over citizenship and voting have reflected changing constitutional principles, political coalitions, and conflicts over power. The legal landscape has expanded democratic participation in some eras and restricted it in others.

That larger historical pattern deserves careful examination.

The Original Question Was Never Voting

The original question was power.

Who would possess it?

Who would exercise it?

Who would inherit it?

Colonial governments did not simply regulate elections.

They regulated humanity.

They assigned legal status.

They determined whose testimony counted.

Whose marriages were recognized.

Whose property rights were protected.

Whose labor could be compelled.

Whose children inherited freedom.

Law became one of the principal mechanisms through which political communities defined membership.

As the United States emerged, citizenship and suffrage developed through constitutional amendments, legislation, court decisions, and state law. Those developments often reflected broader struggles over race, gender, property, and political representation.

Understanding present-day debates therefore requires examining the legal history that shaped American democracy.

Reconstruction: Democracy Expanded—and Then Contracted

Few periods illustrate this dynamic more clearly than Reconstruction.

Following the Civil War, the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments transformed the Constitution by abolishing slavery, establishing birthright citizenship, guaranteeing equal protection, and prohibiting race-based denial of voting rights.

These amendments represented one of the most ambitious efforts in American history to redefine citizenship.

Black officeholders were elected across the South.

State legislatures changed.

Congress changed.

Political participation expanded dramatically.

But Reconstruction also provoked fierce resistance.

Within a relatively short period, a series of judicial decisions narrowed aspects of Reconstruction-era protections. Cases such as The Slaughter-House Cases (1873), United States v. Cruikshank (1876), and the Civil Rights Cases (1883) reshaped the scope of federal authority and civil-rights enforcement. Later decisions, including Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), further legitimized segregation under the doctrine of “separate but equal.”

These legal developments did not erase the Reconstruction Amendments.

But they altered how those amendments would be interpreted and enforced.

The result was not simply a constitutional debate.

It was a struggle over the meaning of democracy itself.

The Legal Architecture of Inclusion and Exclusion

One of the central arguments I advance throughout my work is that American institutions cannot be understood solely through isolated events.

Law develops through cumulative decisions.

Institutions evolve through repeated patterns.

Political cultures inherit assumptions from earlier generations.

When viewed across nearly two and a half centuries, debates over voting rights, citizenship, and representation reveal recurring tensions between expanding democratic participation and restricting it.

The history is therefore not linear.

It is cyclical.

Periods of inclusion have often been followed by periods of retrenchment.

Periods of reform have often been followed by renewed contests over the boundaries of political participation.

Recognizing those cycles does not predetermine how any contemporary policy should be evaluated.

It does, however, remind us that today’s debates exist within a much longer historical conversation.

The Psychodynamics

History is not only institutional.

It is psychological.

Societies remember.

Institutions inherit.

Political cultures transmit narratives about belonging, threat, identity, and legitimacy across generations.

One of the recurring questions in American political life has been how institutions respond when longstanding understandings of power are challenged.

That question has surfaced repeatedly—from Reconstruction, to the Jim Crow era, to the civil-rights movement, and into present-day disputes over voting, representation, and election law.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with particular legislative proposals, the broader historical pattern invites reflection.

What assumptions about citizenship are operating beneath the legal arguments?

How do societies decide who belongs fully within the democratic community?

How do historical narratives continue to shape contemporary political conflict?

Those are questions worthy of sustained public discussion.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Legislation changes.

Court decisions change.

Political majorities change.

But democratic legitimacy ultimately depends upon public confidence that institutions are both fair and open to meaningful participation.

The debate surrounding the SAVE America Act is therefore about more than one bill.

It is about competing understandings of democracy itself.

If history teaches us anything, it is that the boundaries of citizenship have never been fixed.

They have been debated, contested, expanded, narrowed, and reimagined throughout American history.

Our responsibility today is not merely to react to the latest headline.

It is to understand the historical forces that produced it—and to ask, with intellectual honesty and civic seriousness, what kind of democracy we hope to build for the generations that follow.

White Supremacy’s Oldest Fear

Every political system has a central anxiety.

For white supremacy, that anxiety has always been demographic and political displacement.

The fear is simple:

What happens when those who were once excluded gain equal access to power?

For centuries, American law has attempted to answer that question by restricting Black participation in democracy.

The methods change.

The objective remains remarkably consistent.

Citizenship Has Always Been Conditional

The Naturalization Acts of 1790 and 1795 restricted citizenship to free white persons.

Dred Scott declared Black people incapable of citizenship.

Reconstruction attempted to reverse this.

Yet virtually every generation since has witnessed new efforts to narrow democratic participation.

What we are witnessing today through the SAVE America Act is not innovation.

It is repetition.

The Psychopathy of Whiteness

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I argue that white supremacy functions not merely as a political ideology but as a psychological system organized around domination, entitlement, denial, and power preservation.

Its central features include:

• Chronic dehumanization of targeted groups

• Distortion of reality

• Moral disengagement

• Lack of empathy

• Obsessive control

• Compulsive hierarchy maintenance

These traits become visible whenever democratic participation expands.

Because expanded democracy threatens hierarchy.

And hierarchy is the lifeblood of white supremacy.

What Dr. Bobby Wright Saw

Dr. Bobby Wright argued that white supremacy operates as a psychopathic social system.

Its defining feature is not merely prejudice.

Its defining feature is the willingness to harm others while convincing oneself that such harm is justified.

Under this framework, voter suppression becomes recast as election integrity.

Exclusion becomes security.

Discrimination becomes fairness.

Domination becomes patriotism.

Fanon and the Colonial Mind

Frantz Fanon warned that colonial systems depend upon maintaining psychological control over those they dominate.

The colonizer cannot simply control territory.

The colonizer must control meaning.

Must control identity.

Must control legitimacy.

Must control who belongs.

The struggle over voting rights is therefore not merely legal.

It is psychological.

It is existential.

It is a struggle over belonging itself.

Why This Moment Matters

The SAVE America Act emerges alongside efforts to weaken the Voting Rights Act, dismantle majority-Black districts, restrict voting access, and expand state surveillance powers.

Viewed separately, these developments appear disconnected.

Viewed together, they reveal a pattern.

The pattern is familiar.

The pattern is historical.

The pattern is white supremacy adapting itself to a changing world.

The Future of Democracy

The question before America is not whether white supremacy still exists.

The evidence is overwhelming.

The question is whether America is willing to confront it honestly.

History suggests that each generation must answer that question anew.

My fear is that we are entering another period in which democracy will be defined not by expanding participation, but by restricting it.

My hope is that enough people recognize what is happening before the damage becomes irreversible.

Because democracy cannot survive indefinitely when those who benefit most from it spend their lives deciding who deserves access to it.

My Mother Is Gone

My mother died on May 20, 2026.

And if I am honest, I am still struggling to make sense of a world that no longer contains her.

My mother and I shared an extraordinary relationship. We were incredibly close. Not merely close in the traditional sense of a mother and son, but deeply connected in ways that shaped every aspect of who I became. She was my first teacher, my first protector, my first source of love, and my first understanding of what strength looked like.

I adored my mother.

Every aspect of her.

Every quality.

Every characteristic.

Every story.

Every flaw.

Every triumph.

Every detail.

I studied her the way one studies a science project. I paid attention to how she thought, how she moved through the world, how she loved people, how she protected her family, how she handled conflict, how she carried herself with dignity, and how she maintained her humanity in a society that often sought to deny it.

In many ways, I am my mother’s miniature reflection.

Her mini-me.

The older I became, the more I realized how much of her lived inside of me.

The confidence people see in me came from her.

The fearlessness people see in me came from her.

My unwillingness to apologize for my Blackness came from her.

My insistence on speaking truth came from her.

The reason I have been able to walk through this often hostile society unapologetically is because my mother taught me that my humanity was not negotiable.

She taught me that before schools could try to teach me otherwise.

Before employers could try to teach me otherwise.

Before politicians could try to teach me otherwise.

Before America could try to teach me otherwise.

She taught me who I was.

And because she taught me who I was, I survived.

As I grieve her loss, I find myself moving between profound sadness and profound gratitude.

Sadness because I miss her in ways that language cannot adequately describe.

Gratitude because she no longer has to witness what this country continues to become.

She no longer has to watch politicians attack voting rights.

She no longer has to watch the continued dismantling of civil rights protections.

She no longer has to witness the endless reinvention of white supremacy under new names, new slogans, and new legislation.

And perhaps that is why, as I watch the news today, I find myself asking a question that has become increasingly difficult to ignore:

What was it all for?

A Daughter of Texas. A Child of Segregation.

My mother was born into a world shaped by segregation.

Her parents came from Texas.

Like countless Black Americans during World War II, they migrated westward seeking opportunity, dignity, and survival.

They arrived in California believing what millions of Black Americans believed:

That hard work mattered.

That sacrifice mattered.

That perseverance mattered.

That America might eventually become what it claimed to be.

My grandparents worked.

They built.

They sacrificed.

They endured.

And like so many Black families, they hoped their children would inherit a better world.

The Question I Cannot Escape

As I grieve my mother’s passing, I find myself wrestling with a question that feels almost unbearable:

What was it all for?

What was the suffering for?

What was the lynching for?

What was the humiliation for?

What was the segregation for?

What was the disenfranchisement for?

What was the violence for?

What was the sacrifice for?

What was the struggle for?

For more than four centuries, Black people have fought to secure rights that were supposedly guaranteed to all Americans.

And yet those rights continue to be challenged, restricted, weakened, and attacked.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Black Citizenship Was Never Freely Given

The history of Black America is, in many ways, the history of a people fighting to be recognized as fully human.

The Dred Scott decision declared that Black people had no rights that white people were bound to respect.

The Fourteenth Amendment was intended to overturn that lie.

The Fifteenth Amendment was intended to protect Black voting rights.

Yet almost immediately, the United States Supreme Court began dismantling those protections.

Slaughterhouse.

Cruikshank.

The Civil Rights Cases.

Plessy.

A century and a half of legal decisions narrowed, weakened, and hollowed out the promises Reconstruction sought to make.

What we are witnessing today is not new.

It is familiar.

It is American.

The Alabama ruling is not an anomaly.

It is not judicial conservatism.

It is not textualism.

It is not originalism.

It is not constitutional fidelity.

It is the latest chapter in a 150-year pattern wherein the United States Supreme Court has repeatedly reinterpreted the Constitution whenever Black political advancement threatened the racial hierarchy upon which the American republic was built.

From Slaughter-House (1873) to United States v. Cruikshank (1876), from the Civil Rights Cases (1883) to Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), from Milliken v. Bradley (1974) to Shelby County v. Holder (2013), and now Alabama’s congressional map cases, the Court has consistently narrowed constitutional protections for Black Americans while expanding protections for those seeking to preserve white political power.

The question is not whether this pattern exists.

The question is why.

The Court’s Favorite Fiction: Race No Longer Matters

One of the most remarkable features of American jurisprudence is its insistence that race can be ignored after race has already structured the entire political landscape.

This is one of the central psycho-cognitive defense mechanisms discussed in The Psychopathy of Whiteness.

Specifically:

Denial

The refusal to acknowledge racial reality through revisionism, avoidance, and historical distortion.

The Court repeatedly performs this function.

It acknowledges centuries of racial exclusion.

Then insists that race-conscious remedies themselves constitute discrimination.

This is not neutrality.

It is denial masquerading as constitutional principle.

Slaughter-House: The Original Betrayal

The Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868 for a clear purpose.

To protect formerly enslaved Black Americans from white political retaliation.

Yet only five years later, in the Slaughter-House Cases (1873), the Supreme Court dramatically narrowed the amendment’s reach.

The Court effectively stripped the Privileges and Immunities Clause of meaningful force.

The amendment designed to protect Black freedom became a shell of itself.

The counter-revolution had begun.

Cruikshank and the Legalization of White Terror

Three years later, in United States v. Cruikshank (1876), the Court overturned federal prosecutions stemming from the Colfax Massacre.

More than one hundred Black citizens had been murdered for attempting to exercise political power.

The Court’s response?

To limit federal authority to protect them.

The message was unmistakable:

Black citizenship would exist in theory.

White terror would govern in practice.

The Psychodynamics Behind the Law

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing argued that racism operates as a total system of perception, thought, emotion, law, politics, and behavior organized around maintaining white dominance.

Importantly, Welsing did not define white supremacy merely as prejudice.

She defined it as a comprehensive power system operating simultaneously through:

• economics

• education

• entertainment

• labor

• law

• politics

• religion

• sex

• war

The Supreme Court is one of those institutions.

The Court is not outside the system.

The Court is one of the system’s most important enforcement mechanisms.

Fanon’s Warning

Frantz Fanon wrote:

“The settler makes history and is conscious of making it.”

Fanon observed that colonial systems continuously reinvent themselves while insisting they have changed.

The language changes.

The objectives remain.

The rhetoric evolves.

The hierarchy survives.

What Alabama demonstrates is not the disappearance of racial domination.

It demonstrates its adaptation.

Bobby Wright and the Psychopathic Racial Personality

Dr. Bobby Wright argued that the defining feature of psychopathy is not violence alone.

It is the capacity to inflict harm while feeling morally justified in doing so.

That insight helps explain modern voting rights jurisprudence.

The Court can:

• acknowledge racial discrimination;

• acknowledge racial exclusion;

• acknowledge centuries of disenfranchisement;

and still conclude that protecting Black voting power is unconstitutional.

This is not simply legal reasoning.

It is moral dissociation.

The Psycho-Cognitive Defense Mechanisms of Whiteness

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I describe four recurring defense mechanisms:

Denial

Refusing to acknowledge racial reality.

Defensiveness

Reacting negatively when racial systems are challenged.

Deflection

Redirecting attention away from accountability.

Dissociation

Separating oneself psychologically from the harms one benefits from.

Every one of these mechanisms appears in contemporary voting-rights jurisprudence.

The Court denies the continuing impact of racial exclusion.

It becomes defensive toward race-conscious remedies.

It deflects attention toward abstract concepts like “colorblindness.”

It dissociates itself from the consequences of its rulings.

Alabama Is Not the Story

The Court Is

Alabama merely did what Alabama has always done.

The remarkable fact is not that Alabama sought to diminish Black political power.

The remarkable fact is that the Supreme Court rewarded it.

Again.

Just as it rewarded:

• Louisiana in Plessy

• Mississippi after Reconstruction

• Southern school districts after Brown

• Shelby County in 2013

The institution keeps changing its constitutional theories.

The outcome remains remarkably consistent.

Reconstruction Is Still Being Overthrown

The struggle that began after the Civil War never ended.

It merely changed form.

The weapons evolved:

• literacy tests

• poll taxes

• white primaries

• racial gerrymanders

• “colorblind” jurisprudence

Different language.

Same objective.

The Supreme Court’s Alabama ruling should not be understood as an isolated legal decision.

It should be understood as the latest chapter in America’s longest-running constitutional project:

the preservation of white political power through the appearance of legal neutrality.

That is the deeper story.

And until we are willing to confront the psychodynamics that animate these decisions—the denial, defensiveness, deflection, dissociation, racial fear, and institutional self-deception that scholars from Fanon to Welsing to Wright identified decades ago—we will continue mistaking counter-revolution for constitutional law.

The Court is not simply interpreting history.

It is helping to reproduce it.

America has never merely tolerated white supremacist extremism.

It has repeatedly rewarded it.

That is one of the great unspoken truths of American political history. White political violence in the United States has not historically functioned outside the system. It has often functioned as an extension of the system itself—funded, legitimized, absorbed, protected, romanticized, and politically rewarded whenever it served the preservation of white power.

The Trump administration’s decision to allocate $1.78 billion toward January 6th defendants, political loyalists, and associated legal-defense infrastructures is not an aberration. It is not unprecedented. It is not historically disconnected from the American past. It belongs to a long national tradition in which white political violence becomes rebranded as patriotism, white grievance becomes institutional policy, and white extremism becomes politically profitable.

The names change.

The uniforms change.

The slogans change.

But the underlying psychodynamics remain remarkably consistent.

In Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness and The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I argue that whiteness in America has never functioned merely as a racial category. It has functioned as a psycho-political system organized around domination, entitlement, territorial control, mythologized victimhood, and the preservation of racial hierarchy at all costs. Within this system, violence committed in defense of white political power is often not viewed as criminality. It is viewed as restoration.

That is the key to understanding both Andrew Jackson and January 6th.

Andrew Jackson and the Rewarding of White Violence

Donald Trump’s admiration for Andrew Jackson has never been accidental.

Jackson represents one of the clearest embodiments of white populist authoritarianism in American history. He was celebrated as a “man of the people,” but the “people” he envisioned were overwhelmingly white men. Jacksonian democracy expanded voting rights for white males while simultaneously intensifying racial domination over Indigenous people, Black people, and nonwhite populations generally.

Under Jackson, white aggression became national policy.

The Indian Removal Act of 1830—which led to the Trail of Tears—was not simply an act of policy disagreement. It was state-sanctioned ethnic cleansing. Entire Indigenous nations were violently uprooted so that white settlers could expand economically and territorially.

Jackson also openly defied Supreme Court rulings when they interfered with white expansionist desires. In Worcester v. Georgia (1832), the Court ruled that Georgia had no authority over Cherokee lands. Jackson reportedly ignored the ruling entirely.

This matters because it established one of the defining features of American white populism:
When white racial power feels constrained by law, the law itself becomes expendable.

That logic echoes directly into January 6th.

Andrew Johnson and the Restoration of White Supremacist Power

If Andrew Jackson laid the ideological foundation for white populist nationalism, Andrew Johnson helped resurrect white supremacist political power after the Civil War.

Johnson’s presidency represents one of the most catastrophic moments in American racial history because he effectively sabotaged Reconstruction before it could fully transform the nation.

Following the Civil War, the United States stood at a crossroads:
Would democracy become genuinely multiracial?
Or would white supremacy simply reorganize itself under new legal forms?

Johnson chose white supremacy.

A former Confederate sympathizer from Tennessee, Johnson issued sweeping pardons to former Confederates and rapidly restored political and economic power to Southern white elites. Thousands of former Confederates regained:

• land,

• wealth,

• political office,

• and institutional authority.

Many of the same men who had waged war against the United States were reintegrated directly back into positions of power.

At the same time, Johnson opposed meaningful protections for formerly enslaved Black people. He vetoed:

• the Civil Rights Act of 1866,

• expansion of the Freedmen’s Bureau,

• and numerous Reconstruction protections.

Though Congress overrode some of these vetoes, Johnson’s actions emboldened Southern white resistance movements and accelerated the emergence of:

• Black Codes,

• racial terror organizations,

• and violent anti-Black insurgencies throughout the South.

In many ways, Andrew Johnson normalized one of the central patterns of American political life:
White supremacist violence and rebellion would repeatedly be forgiven, politically absorbed, and institutionally rewarded so long as white hierarchy itself remained intact.

That pattern echoes powerfully into the modern era.

The rehabilitation of January 6th actors mirrors the Reconstruction-era rehabilitation of former Confederates:

• anti-democratic violence becomes reframed as patriotism,

• insurrection becomes grievance,

• and those who attempt to overturn democratic outcomes become recast as victims rather than aggressors.

The Confederacy Was Never Fully Defeated

One of the greatest myths taught in American schools is that the Civil War resolved America’s racial contradictions.

It did not.

The Confederacy lost militarily, but Confederate ideology survived politically, culturally, psychologically, and institutionally.

After Reconstruction briefly expanded Black political participation, white supremacist paramilitary groups launched coordinated campaigns of racial terror throughout the South:

• the Ku Klux Klan,

• the White League,

• the Red Shirts,

• and countless local militias.

These were not fringe actors operating outside the political order.

They were often directly connected to Democratic Party structures, plantation elites, sheriffs, judges, business leaders, newspaper publishers, and state legislatures.

White violence was not punished.

It was rewarded.

Men who organized racial massacres became governors, senators, judges, congressmen, and economic elites.

Benjamin Tillman: Terrorist Turned Senator

No figure illustrates this more clearly than Benjamin Tillman of South Carolina.

Tillman openly bragged about participating in white supremacist violence and voter suppression campaigns against Black citizens during Reconstruction. He celebrated the Hamburg Massacre of 1876 and other acts of racial terror designed to overthrow Black political participation.

Yet America did not ostracize him.

America elevated him.

Tillman became:

• Governor of South Carolina,

• then U.S. Senator,

• and one of the most powerful segregationists in the nation.

On the Senate floor, Tillman openly defended lynching, white supremacy, and racial domination. He once declared:

“We have done our level best… to prevent the Negro from voting.”

And yet he was treated as a legitimate statesman.

That is the American pattern:
White violence becomes political capital.

White Citizens’ Councils: Respectable White Supremacy

The same pattern resurfaced throughout the twentieth century with the White Citizens’ Councils.

Founded after Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the Citizens’ Councils represented the “respectable,” middle-class wing of white supremacy. Unlike the Klan, they often wore suits instead of hoods. They included:

• bankers,

• business owners,

• politicians,

• school board members,

• judges,

• newspaper editors,

• and law enforcement officials.

Their purpose was simple:
Preserve white power by any means necessary.

They:

• economically terrorized Black families,

• fired Black workers,

• denied loans,

• coordinated segregation campaigns,

• manipulated elections,

• pressured local governments,

• and protected white racial dominance through institutional force.

Again:
America did not isolate these people.

It rewarded them.

Many retained:

• political office,

• economic privilege,

• institutional legitimacy,

• and cultural respectability.

This is critical to understand because white supremacy in America has rarely operated solely through open mobs. It has often functioned through institutional collaboration between extremists and “respectable” political leadership.

That same fusion is visible today.

January 6th and the Rehabilitation of White Political Violence

January 6th was not simply a riot.

It was a racialized authoritarian mobilization rooted in:

• demographic fear,

• political grievance,

• white nationalist mythology,

• and the belief that America was being “taken away.”

The symbolism was unmistakable:

• Confederate flags,

• Christian nationalist rhetoric,

• anti-Black conspiracy narratives,

• violent fantasies about political enemies,

• and obsession with “restoring” the country.

And yet, almost immediately, powerful political actors began reframing the event.

Participants became:

• “patriots,”

• “political prisoners,”

• “hostages,”

• or “misunderstood citizens.”

This follows the exact historical formula America has always used regarding white extremism:
Humanize it.
Normalize it.
Absorb it.
Reward it.

The proposed $1.78 billion allocation is not merely financial policy. It is symbolic rehabilitation.

It tells the country:
Your violence may be forgiven if it protects the existing racial order.

The Psychodynamics of White Restoration

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I discuss how whiteness often operates psychologically through:

• perceived entitlement,

• projection,

• grievance,

• domination,

• moral inversion,

• and existential fear of displacement.

Many January 6th participants appeared motivated not simply by electoral disagreement, but by the psychological terror of losing white political centrality.

This is why white political violence in America is so frequently framed as:

• patriotism,

• restoration,

• freedom,

• law and order,

• or “taking the country back.”

The violence is reinterpreted morally because the underlying goal is preservation of hierarchy.

Frantz Fanon warned about this in The Wretched of the Earth, where he described colonial systems producing pathological attachments to domination and dehumanization. Dr. Bobby Wright later argued that white supremacist violence reflects a collective psychopathic orientation in which domination becomes normalized while empathy becomes selectively suspended.

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing similarly argued that white supremacy is fundamentally driven by profound insecurity around loss of power and numerical dominance.

Those frameworks help explain the emotional intensity surrounding:

• immigration,

• voting rights,

• demographic change,

• DEI,

• education,

• and electoral participation today.

White Extremism Has Always Been Subsidized

One of the most dangerous myths in America is that white supremacist violence emerges from isolated individuals.

Historically, it has often been:

• funded,

• politically shielded,

• economically incentivized,

• legally protected,

• and culturally legitimized.

Slave patrols became police departments.
Segregationists became senators.
Lynching advocates became governors.
White Citizens’ Council leaders became businessmen and school officials.
Confederates became monuments.
Insurrectionists become martyrs.

America repeatedly converts white extremism into institutional legitimacy.

That is why this moment matters so profoundly.

The Real Danger

The danger is not simply Trump.

The danger is the recurring American impulse to rehabilitate white authoritarianism whenever democracy becomes multiracial.

That is the pattern:

• Reconstruction produced backlash.

• Civil Rights produced backlash.

• Obama produced backlash.

• Demographic change produced backlash.

• Black political participation produces backlash.

And each time, portions of American institutions accommodate rather than confront the extremism.

Final Word

The proposed support for January 6th actors is not disconnected from American history.

It is American history.

Andrew Jackson rewarded white expansionist violence.
Reconstruction terrorists became lawmakers.
White Citizens’ Councils became institutional power brokers.
Segregationists became senators.
And now January 6th participants are being politically rehabilitated in real time.

This is not merely politics.

It is the long psychological continuity of a nation that has repeatedly struggled to distinguish democracy from white entitlement.

And until America confronts that reality honestly, the cycle will continue.

America has always wanted labor without laborers.

That is the hidden throughline from slavery to sharecropping, from the cotton gin to the mechanical cotton picker, from ATMs to airport kiosks, from offshoring to artificial intelligence.

The story is not new. AI is simply the newest machine in a very old American fantasy: produce more, pay less, control everything, and treat human beings as disposable once they are no longer profitable.

The modern headlines are chilling. In March 2026, U.S. employers announced 60,620 job cuts, and artificial intelligence was cited as the reason for 15,341 of them—roughly 25 percent of all announced cuts that month. By April, Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that AI had led all layoff reasons for the second consecutive month, accounting for 21,490 announced cuts, or 26 percent of the monthly total.

This is not simply technological change.

This is a labor doctrine.

And that doctrine was born in slavery.

The First American Labor Model Was Enslavement

Before America had a modern economy, it had a plantation economy. Before it had an industrial labor force, it had enslaved African labor. The foundational economic question of the United States was never, “How do we honor work?” It was, “How do we extract the greatest amount of value from human beings while giving them as little as possible?”

That is the American labor origin story.

Slavery was not simply racial hatred. It was racial capitalism. It was the conversion of Black bodies into machines of production. Enslaved Africans were treated as inputs, assets, reproductive capital, agricultural technology, and wealth-generating instruments.

In Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness and The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I argue that the United States was built through a psycho-economic and psycho-legal system that normalized domination while calling it civilization. Labor exploitation was not incidental to that system. It was central to it.

America did not merely tolerate slavery.

America organized itself around it.

The Cotton Gin Did Not Reduce Exploitation. It Expanded It.

One of the great myths of American invention is that technology naturally reduces human suffering. The cotton gin proves otherwise.

Eli Whitney’s cotton gin, patented in 1794, mechanized the separation of cotton fiber from seed. It made cotton processing faster and more profitable. But rather than reducing slavery, it intensified it. By making cotton more profitable, the cotton gin increased demand for enslaved labor across the expanding South.

This is the first lesson of American automation:

Technology does not liberate workers when the economic system is built on extraction.

It simply increases the appetite for production.

The cotton gin did not end the plantation. It supercharged it.

It made enslaved Black people more economically valuable to white planters, not more human in the eyes of the nation. The machine increased efficiency, but that efficiency was reinvested into more land theft, more enslavement, more violence, and more production.

That is the pattern we must understand.

Automation under capitalism does not automatically free people.

It frees owners from dependency on particular forms of labor while intensifying their control over production.

Sharecropping: Slavery Rebranded as Debt

After Emancipation, the United States did not create true economic freedom for formerly enslaved people. Instead, the South reorganized racial labor control through sharecropping, tenant farming, convict leasing, debt peonage, racial terror, and land theft.

Sharecropping was slavery without the auction block.

Black families worked land they did not own, borrowed against future crops, bought supplies on credit, and were trapped in cycles of debt manipulated by white landowners and merchants. The labor arrangement changed form, but the economic objective remained the same: extract Black labor while preventing Black autonomy.

Then came mechanization.

By the 1920s and 1930s, agricultural mechanization and economic crisis began transforming Southern farming. A USDA history of Black farmers notes that the 1920s and 1930s were a watershed period for tenant farmers and sharecroppers because of increasing mechanization and economic pressures.

The mechanical cotton picker, developed commercially in the twentieth century and widely adopted after World War II, helped move Southern agriculture from labor-intensive sharecropping to capital-intensive mechanized farming. Economic historian Gavin Wright has described the mechanical cotton picker as indispensable to the transition from hand labor and sharecropping to postwar capital-intensive agriculture.

In plain language: once machines could do the work, many Black laborers were discarded.

This is America’s second labor lesson:

First, Black labor was exploited because it was needed.

Then Black labor was abandoned when machines became cheaper.

The nation extracted centuries of Black labor and then treated Black workers as surplus people.

Industrialization and the American Habit of Displacement

The same logic moved through industrialization.

Factories promised work. Machines increased output. Workers became interchangeable. The assembly line turned human beings into extensions of industrial systems. The goal was never human flourishing. The goal was speed, scale, standardization, and profit.

Again: do more with less.

Less time.

Less pay.

Less bargaining power.

Less humanity.

By the mid-twentieth century, automation entered offices, banks, airlines, manufacturing plants, and service industries. Computers were introduced into business and government operations throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, transforming clerical, administrative, financial, and data-processing work.

Then came the ATM.

The first U.S. ATM was installed in 1969 by Chemical Bank in Rockville Centre, New York. ATMs did not immediately eliminate teller jobs in a simple one-to-one fashion; economist James Bessen notes that teller employment initially survived because ATMs lowered branch operating costs and banks opened more branches.

But the long-term logic was clear: reduce reliance on human labor per transaction.

Even the Bureau of Labor Statistics now states that automation is expected to reduce the number of tellers needed per bank branch, including through video kiosks that allow tellers to serve more customers from a single location.

That is the deeper point. The machine does not always eliminate the job immediately. Sometimes it changes the job, thins the job, deskills the job, relocates the job, surveils the job, or makes fewer workers do more.

Airport kiosks followed the same pattern.

Self-service kiosks shifted labor from airline employees to passengers. Customers began checking themselves in, printing their own boarding passes, tagging their own bags, and navigating systems once handled by paid workers. Industry analysis has described self-service kiosks as reducing staffing needs and labor costs while increasing efficiency.

This is the American labor pattern again:

Make the customer work.

Make the worker disappear.

Make the company richer.

Offshoring: If Machines Cannot Replace You, Cheaper Labor Will

By the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, another strategy accelerated: move the job.

If American labor was too expensive, companies could send production overseas. Harvard Business Review described manufacturers defending offshore sourcing as a way to compete with cheaper imports as early as the late 1980s.

A Harvard Business School working paper defined offshoring broadly as transferring job activities abroad, often to obtain lower labor costs, especially in manufacturing and service delivery. A U.S. International Trade Commission paper similarly describes the logic: as offshoring costs fell, foreign labor became cheaper relative to U.S. labor, reducing demand for domestic labor.

This was not an accident.

This was the same plantation logic moving through globalization.

The American corporation asked: Where can labor be made cheaper? Where can workers be made more desperate? Where can regulations be weaker? Where can unions be avoided? Where can production be moved so capital can remain protected?

The answer was: anywhere workers had less power.

This is why I say capitalism has never been any American’s friend.

Capitalism has beneficiaries, but it has no friends.

Its loyalty is not to workers. Not to families. Not to communities. Not to the nation. Its loyalty is to accumulation.

AI Is the Newest Version of an Old Desire

Artificial intelligence is now being introduced into the labor market with the same promise every prior technology carried: efficiency, productivity, innovation, progress.

But we must ask: progress for whom?

If companies are cutting human benefits to fund AI investments, if they are reducing parental leave, weakening retirement matches, shrinking workplace protections, and laying off workers while building data centers, then AI is not being implemented as a tool of liberation.

It is being implemented as a tool of labor discipline.

The worker is being told:

Be grateful.

Be flexible.

Be productive.

Be replaceable.

And if you ask for too much, the machine is waiting.

Recent reporting indicates companies are cutting benefits to manage rising health care costs and fund AI investments, while white-collar workers may have less leverage because employers increasingly view AI as capable of replacing portions of the workforce. Challenger data already shows AI emerging as a major stated reason for job cuts in 2026.

This is not the future.

This is the present.

The White Worker Is About to Feel the Betrayal

The psychological shock will be especially intense for many white workers because they were sold the American dream as a racial inheritance.

Work hard.

Follow the rules.

Get educated.

Stay loyal.

Buy the house.

Retire with dignity.

That promise was always unevenly distributed. Black people, Indigenous people, Mexican workers, Asian laborers, immigrants, and poor people have always known the brutality underneath the myth. But many white Americans were taught to believe that proximity to whiteness, obedience to capitalism, and faith in meritocracy would protect them.

AI is revealing the lie.

Because capital does not love white workers either.

It used them.

It flattered them.

It gave many of them relative advantages over Black and Brown workers.

But when their labor becomes too expensive, too slow, too protected, or too human, capital will discard them too.

This is one of the central contradictions of whiteness: it offers psychological wages while the economic system quietly robs almost everyone.

The white worker may be told that immigrants took their job, that DEI took their job, that Black advancement took their job, that women took their job.

But increasingly, the employer replaced the job.

The corporation automated it, outsourced it, contracted it, digitized it, or eliminated it.

Black and Brown Workers Will Be Hit Hard Too

This does not mean Black and Brown workers are safe. Quite the opposite.

Historically marginalized workers often occupy the very roles most vulnerable to automation: administrative support, customer service, call centers, logistics, entry-level professional roles, clerical positions, and service jobs.

When labor markets contract, racial inequities widen.

When companies cut benefits, Black families feel it sharply because wealth inequality already leaves fewer buffers. When entry-level roles disappear, first-generation college graduates lose pathways into professional stability. When retirement matches shrink, workers already excluded from generational wealth lose one of the few employer-sponsored mechanisms for future security.

AI will not harm everyone equally.

American systems never do.

The Real Doctrine: Do More With Less

From slavery to AI, the doctrine has remained brutally consistent:

Do more with less.

More cotton with less freedom.

More crops with less pay.

More production with fewer workers.

More banking with fewer tellers.

More travel processing with fewer agents.

More customer service with fewer humans.

More corporate profit with fewer benefits.

More “innovation” with less obligation.

This is not efficiency in a moral sense.

It is extraction.

It is the conversion of human vulnerability into shareholder value.

The Psychopathy of Profit

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I write about systems that normalize harm while presenting themselves as rational, efficient, and inevitable.

This is the psychopathy of profit.

A system can announce layoffs in the language of “optimization.”

It can cut parental leave in the language of “sustainability.”

It can replace workers in the language of “innovation.”

It can destroy livelihoods while calling itself visionary.

That is moral inversion.

And moral inversion is one of the most dangerous features of American capitalism.

The plantation called theft “property rights.”

Sharecropping called bondage “contract.”

Segregation called exclusion “order.”

Offshoring called abandonment “competitiveness.”

AI layoffs are now called “transformation.”

The language changes.

The violence remains.

The Future We Are Being Asked to Accept

We are being asked to accept a future where:

• fewer people have stable jobs,

• fewer workers receive benefits,

• fewer young people gain entry-level experience,

• fewer families can rely on employer support,

• and fewer communities can survive corporate abandonment.

We are being told this is inevitable.

It is not.

Technology is not destiny. Policy is destiny. Ownership is destiny. Values are destiny. The question is not whether AI will exist. The question is who it will serve.

Will it serve workers?

Or will it serve the same economic class that has always sought labor without obligation?

Final Word

America’s current AI labor crisis did not begin in Silicon Valley.

It began on plantations.

It moved through cotton fields, sharecropping contracts, factories, banks, airports, call centers, and offshore production lines.

Now it sits inside algorithms, chatbots, enterprise software, predictive models, and automated workflows.

The machine has changed.

The desire has not.

America has always wanted productivity without responsibility.

It has always wanted labor without dignity.

It has always wanted wealth without accountability.

And now, with AI, it may finally believe it can have production without people.

That is not progress.

That is the old plantation dream wearing a digital mask.

There is a profound psychological and political sickness at the center of American democracy.

And once again, it is revealing itself through law.

Across the United States, Republican-controlled legislatures and white conservative legal strategists are aggressively redrawing congressional districts, dismantling Voting Rights protections, suppressing Black and Brown voting power, and restructuring electoral systems to preserve white political dominance. These actions are not isolated incidents. They are not “partisan disagreements.” They are not merely policy disputes.

They are manifestations of what I describe in Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness and The Psychopathy of Whiteness as the psycho-legal architecture of white supremacy: a deeply embedded political pathology rooted in fear, domination, racial anxiety, demographic insecurity, and the compulsive need to preserve white power at all costs.

This is Jim Crow 3.0.

Not with hoods and burning crosses.

But with district maps, judicial rulings, voter roll purges, algorithmic targeting, racialized propaganda, and constitutional manipulation.

The objective remains the same:
Preserve white political power by neutralizing the growing democratic power of non-white people.

White Supremacy as a Psycho-Political System

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing argued in The Isis Papers that white supremacy is fundamentally a global system of behavioral organization rooted in white genetic and political insecurity.

Welsing wrote that racism is:

“the local and global power system structured and maintained by persons who classify themselves as white…”

operating across:

• law

• politics

• economics

• entertainment

• education

• religion

• sex

• war

to maintain white dominance.

Dr. Bobby Wright expanded this analysis in The Psychopathic Racial Personality, arguing that white supremacy reflects a pathological social orientation toward domination, violence, and moral detachment.

Frantz Fanon, in The Wretched of the Earth, identified colonialism itself as a psychologically disordered structure requiring the permanent degradation and containment of the colonized population.

And in my own work, I extend this lineage by examining the psycho-cognitive and neurobiological mechanisms through which whiteness sustains itself through:

• denial

• defensiveness

• deflection

• dissociation

These mechanisms are not abstract theories.

They are observable political behaviors.

What we are witnessing today is a demographic panic response.

White conservative political operatives understand something clearly:

The United States is becoming increasingly non-white.

That reality generates a profound crisis within the white supremacist political imagination because white political dominance has historically depended upon:

• racial exclusion,

• voter suppression,

• segregated political power,

• and constitutional manipulation.

This is why virtually every major attack on voting rights in modern America disproportionately targets:

• Black voters,

• Latino voters,

• Native voters,

• urban voters,

• and younger multiracial electorates.

The strategy is remarkably consistent:
Reduce the electoral power of populations perceived as threats to white conservative control.

Delusions.

The Supreme Court and the Long History of White Constitutional Retrenchment

The current assault on voting rights is not new.

It is part of a 150-year continuum.

After the Civil War, the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were designed to radically transform the United States into a multiracial democracy.

The white political establishment immediately launched a legal counterrevolution.

The Supreme Court became one of the principal architects of that rollback.

The pattern is unmistakable:

• The Slaughter-House Cases (1873) gutted the Privileges or Immunities Clause of the 14th Amendment.

• United States v. Cruikshank (1876) weakened federal protection against white supremacist terrorism.

• The Civil Rights Cases (1883) destroyed the Civil Rights Act of 1875.

• Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) constitutionalized apartheid.

• Corrigan v. Buckley (1926) legitimized racially restrictive housing covenants.

• Euclid v. Ambler (1926) upheld and authorized nationwide racial zoning ordinances

• Milliken v. Bradley (1974) protected school segregation through suburban exclusion.

• San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez (1973) upheld educational inequality tied to wealth and race.

• Shelby County v. Holder (2013) dismantled key protections of the Voting Rights Act.

• Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (2022) upheld key affirmative actions and racial exclusivity of under-performing white students and weaponized the program against Black and Latino students.

• And now, recent rulings attacking race-conscious districting continue the same project.

Each era reproduces the same psychodynamic imperative:

Protect white dominance while claiming neutrality.

That is the essence of psycho-legal dissociation.

Redistricting as Racialized Psychological Warfare

Today’s redistricting battles are being framed publicly as “constitutional concerns” or “race neutrality.”

That framing itself is part of the pathology.

Because the actual political objective is obvious:
Dilute Black voting power.

Republican legislators across multiple Southern states have aggressively pursued district maps that fracture historically Black voting blocs and absorb them into overwhelmingly white conservative districts.

This is not accidental.

It is surgical.

The same officials who insist America is now “post-racial” simultaneously devote extraordinary political energy toward ensuring Black communities cannot consolidate sufficient electoral power.

That contradiction exposes the psychological structure underneath the behavior.

As I argue in The Psychopathy of Whiteness, whiteness often requires:

• the denial of racism while actively reproducing racism;

• the performance of innocence while exercising domination;

• and the projection of victimhood while wielding structural power.

This is precisely what modern voter suppression politics represents.

The Neurobiology of White Supremacist Fear

White supremacy is not merely ideological.

It becomes conditioned psychologically and neurologically through generations of reinforcement.

As outlined in my Neurobiological and Psycho-Cognitive framework, repeated exposure to racialized narratives engrains fear-based neural associations linking Blackness with danger, disorder, or threat.

These conditioned responses become politically activated during moments of demographic change.

Thus:

• expanding Black political participation becomes experienced as “replacement,”

• multicultural democracy becomes interpreted as “loss,”

• and racial equity becomes perceived as persecution.

This helps explain why so many white conservative political movements frame basic democratic inclusion as existential danger.

The reaction is not rational.

It is conditioned.

And politically weaponized.

White Supremacy and Democratic Sabotage

The contemporary Republican assault on voting rights reflects what Fanon described as the colonizer’s refusal to relinquish power peacefully.

Because genuine democracy threatens racial hierarchy.

The deeper truth is this:

Many white conservative political structures do not actually believe in multiracial democracy if multiracial democracy threatens white political control.

That is why:

• voter suppression intensifies when Black turnout rises;

• redistricting intensifies when demographic change accelerates;

• attacks on DEI intensify when institutions become more diverse;

• and historical education becomes criminalized when it exposes systemic racism.

The system responds defensively because whiteness experiences truth itself as destabilizing.

Collective Psychopathology and the Preservation of Power

Dr. Bobby Wright argued that the white supremacist social order reflects psychopathic traits:

• lack of empathy,

• compulsive domination,

• moral disengagement,

• and normalized violence.

Frances Cress Welsing identified similar patterns of projection, fear, and aggression.

And Fanon warned that colonial systems deform both the oppressed and the oppressor psychologically.

What we are witnessing now is not simply conservatism.

It is a system exhibiting profound pathological investment in racial hierarchy.

Because healthy democracies do not obsessively seek ways to prevent non-white people from voting.

Healthy societies do not spend billions engineering racialized electoral maps.

Healthy political systems do not continuously weaken civil rights protections while pretending racism no longer exists.

That is not democratic behavior.

It is pathological behavior.

Jim Crow 3.0

Jim Crow never ended.

It evolved.

Jim Crow 1.0 used:

• lynching,

• poll taxes,

• literacy tests,

• and overt racial terror.

Jim Crow 2.0 used:

• suburbanization,

• school segregation,

• mass incarceration,

• economic exclusion,

• and racialized policing.

Jim Crow 3.0 uses:

• redistricting,

• judicial retrenchment,

• voter suppression laws,

• digital propaganda,

• anti-DEI hysteria,

• and constitutional formalism masquerading as neutrality.

The technology changes.

The pathology remains.

The Core Question

The real question before America is not whether racism still exists.

The real question is:

How much of American democracy has always depended upon managing, suppressing, or neutralizing non-white political power?

Because once that question is asked honestly, the current moment becomes perfectly clear.

This is not an accident.

It is not an aberration.

It is the continuation of a centuries-long psycho-political project:
the preservation of white power through law, fear, institutional manipulation, and racialized democratic restriction.

And until that reality is confronted directly, the cycle will continue.

The masks may change.

The language may evolve.

But the psychodynamics of white supremacy remain terrifyingly consistent.

There are moments in American history when the law does not merely interpret reality—it reveals it.

The current challenge to birthright citizenship is one of those moments.

At stake is not simply a constitutional question. It is a foundational one:

Who counts as a citizen of the United States?
And who gets to decide?

This is not new terrain.

We have been here before.

Dred Scott Was Not an Outlier. It Was a Blueprint.

In 1857, the Supreme Court ruled in Dred Scott v. Sandford that Black people—enslaved or free—could not be citizens of the United States.

That decision is often described as one of the Court’s greatest failures.

But that framing is incomplete.

Dred Scott was not a deviation from white American legal logic.
It was a clear articulation of it.

The Court did not simply misinterpret the Constitution—it defined the boundaries of belonging in racial terms.

And in doing so, it established a pattern that has never fully disappeared.

The Fourteenth Amendment: A Direct Rejection—and a Target

The Fourteenth Amendment was designed to overturn Dred Scott.

Its Citizenship Clause is explicit:

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States… are citizens.”

There is no ambiguity in that language.

There is no conditional clause.

There is no racial qualifier.

And yet, from the moment it was ratified, its meaning has been contested, narrowed, and reinterpreted.

Not because it was unclear—but because it was too clear.

The Strategy Has Changed. The Objective Has Not.

Today’s legal arguments against birthright citizenship rarely invoke race directly.

They do not need to.

Instead, they rely on technical language:

• “Jurisdiction”

• “Original intent”

• “Illegal presence”

But beneath that language is a familiar question:

Who is fully entitled to belong—and who is conditionally present?

This is how legal systems evolve.

They do not always repeat the same words.

They reproduce the same outcomes.

From Explicit Exclusion to Conceptual Restriction

In the era of Dred Scott, exclusion was direct.

In the modern era, it is reframed.

It is presented as:

• Constitutional clarification

• Legal precision

• Policy necessity

But the effect is strikingly similar:

to narrow the category of who can claim full membership in the nation.

The Psychological and Structural Pattern

In Diagnosing Whiteness & Anti-Blackness, I argue that American systems are not neutral—they are structured in ways that normalize exclusion while presenting themselves as fair.

Birthright citizenship challenges reveal this clearly.

They ask us to believe that restricting access to citizenship is a matter of legal interpretation, not structural consequence.

• Declaring equality

• While limiting access to it

• Affirming rights

• While redefining who qualifies for them

This is not confusion.

What the Scholars Warned Us About

Dr. Bobby Wright wrote that systems of domination often mask themselves through language that appears orderly and rational, even when the outcomes are profoundly unequal.

Dr. Amos Wilson described American society as one in which institutional structures operate to maintain existing power arrangements—often without requiring explicit coordination.

Dr. Frances Cress Welsing argued that systems of racial hierarchy are sustained not only through policy, but through deeply embedded cultural and psychological reinforcement.

And Frantz Fanon reminded us that colonial systems do not disappear—they adapt, often becoming more subtle and more difficult to name.

Taken together, these insights point to a critical understanding:

Systems do not need to announce exclusion to produce it.

The Stakes Are Not Theoretical

Birthright citizenship is not an abstract legal doctrine.

It determines:

• Who is protected

• Who is recognized

• Who has standing

• Who belongs

If that principle is weakened, the implications extend far beyond immigration policy.

It reshapes the foundation of citizenship itself.

The Language of Law, The Reality of Power

Legal debates often emphasize interpretation.

But interpretation does not occur in a vacuum.

It occurs within a context shaped by:

• History

• Power

• Institutional continuity

When the meaning of citizenship is revisited, we must ask:

Is this about constitutional clarity—or constitutional narrowing?

Continuity, Not Coincidence

From Dred Scott to the present, there is a throughline:

• Define the boundaries of citizenship

• Narrow them when necessary

• Justify the narrowing through legal reasoning

Different language.

Same function.

Final Word: The Question That Remains

The United States has long framed itself as a nation defined by law.

But law is not only a system of rules.

It is a system of decisions.

And those decisions reveal priorities.

The question before us is not simply whether birthright citizenship will be upheld.

It is whether we are willing to recognize what is at stake when it is challenged:

The definition of who belongs—and who can be excluded from belonging.

Dred Scott asked that question directly.

Today, it is being asked again—
more carefully, more technically, but no less consequentially.

The Supreme Court did not simply weaken the Voting Rights Act.

It did what it has done, with remarkable consistency, for more than 150 years:
it narrowed the meaning of equality while preserving the structure of power.

Call it what it is.

This is Jim Crow 3.0—not robed in segregationist language, but wrapped in constitutional abstraction, procedural restraint, and the fiction of neutrality.

The Fourteenth Amendment Was Targeted From the Beginning

The Fourteenth Amendment was never meant to be symbolic. It was meant to be disruptive—to fundamentally alter who counted, who belonged, and who held power in the United States.

The Court moved quickly to contain it.

In the Slaughter-House Cases (1873), the Court effectively gutted the Privileges or Immunities Clause, reducing a transformative amendment into something narrow, technical, and largely toothless.

Three years later, in United States v. Cruikshank (1876), it refused to hold perpetrators of racial terror accountable, signaling clearly: the Constitution would not be used to protect Black life if doing so disrupted white power.

Then the pattern accelerated:

• Civil Rights Cases (1883) — civil rights protections dismantled

• United States v. Harris (1883) — federal enforcement weakened

• Pace v. Alabama (1883) — racial hierarchy rationalized

• Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) — segregation constitutionalized

• Corrigan v. Buckley (1926) — restrictive racial housing covenants legalized

• Euclid v. Ambler (1926) — racial zoning ordinances legalized

This was not drift.

This was design.

This was Jim Crow 1.0—open, explicit, unapologetic.

Jim Crow Didn’t End. It Learned How to Speak Differently.

After Brown v. Board of Education, the language changed.

The objective did not.

Where Jim Crow 1.0 relied on explicit racial control, Jim Crow 2.0 relied on legal sophistication—delay, fragmentation, and the weaponization of “neutrality.”

The Court didn’t say inequality was acceptable.
It simply made it harder—and eventually nearly impossible—to prove.

• Milliken v. Bradley (1974) — desegregation contained

• San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez (1973)— inequality normalized

• Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978) — remedies restricted

Equality became theoretical.
History became irrelevant.
Impact became secondary to intent.

Jim Crow 3.0: Erase Race, Preserve Outcome

Now we arrive at the present.

The Court is no longer defending inequality directly.
It is eliminating the tools used to measure and correct it.

By limiting the consideration of race in voting maps, the Court is advancing a simple but devastating premise:

If you cannot name the inequality, you cannot remedy it.

This is the move.

This is the strategy.

This is the evolution.

The Fiction of Neutrality

The Court’s reasoning rests on a familiar claim: that race-conscious remedies are themselves unconstitutional.

But this ignores a fundamental reality:

The system was never race-neutral.

District lines have always been drawn with political intent.
Political intent has always intersected with race.
Race has always shaped access to power.

So what does “neutrality” mean in this context?

It means maintaining the existing distribution of power—without acknowledging how it was created.

This Is Not Interpretation. This Is Selection.

The Court is not passively interpreting the Constitution.

It is actively selecting which parts of history matter—and which parts can be ignored.

It is selecting:

• Which harms are visible

• Which remedies are permissible

• Which inequalities are recognized

• Limit the reach of equality

• Narrow the tools of enforcement

• Preserve the structure of power

• Justify it through legal reasoning

Same function.

Final Word: Democracy Requires More Than Procedure

The United States often defines democracy in procedural terms—the right to vote, the existence of elections.

But democracy without equitable representation is not democracy.

It is theater.

When the law protects the structure of inequality while claiming neutrality, it is not failing. It is performing exactly as designed.

Jim Crow did not disappear.

It adapted.

And what we are witnessing now is not its return—

It is its continuation.

The question is no longer whether the system is broken.
The question is whether we are willing to admit that it is working exactly as intended.

Title: The Smoking Gun Is His Wife

Subtitle: Six years of denial. One sworn FBI proffer. One recording in Epstein’s own voice. One 2002 email. One living witness. The architecture of Donald Trump’s Epstein cover story has one weak link — and she just walked to a White House podium to deny it.

There is a sworn FBI proffer document in the released Epstein files that says Jeffrey Epstein introduced Donald Trump to Melania.

There is a recording, in Epstein’s own voice, that says the first time Donald Trump slept with Melania was on his plane.

There is a 2002 email, signed Love, Melania, to the woman now serving twenty years in federal prison for trafficking children.

There is a witness who lived inside the Trump marriage for twenty years and is offering to testify before Congress.

And on April 9, 2026, the First Lady of the United States walked to a White House podium — under no subpoena, no interview request, and reportedly without her own husband’s advance knowledge — and denied all of it.

The smoking gun on Donald Trump’s Epstein cover-up is not a document the press has yet to find. It is not a witness who has yet to come forward. It is not a release the Department of Justice is still withholding. The smoking gun is sleeping in the White House.

She is not denying for herself.

She is denying for him.

The Receipts

For six years, the President has held one public position on Jeffrey Epstein. He had a falling out with him. He never visited the island. He barely knew the man. The relationship was casual at most, exaggerated at worst.

Every one of those statements is contradicted by the architecture of his own marriage.

One — the email. In 2002, two years before her wedding, Melania Knauss emailed Ghislaine Maxwell. The Department of Justice released the email this winter. It opens Dear G and is signed Love, Melania. Maxwell wrote back and called her sweet pea. Maxwell is now in federal prison for trafficking children.

The exchange was not Donald Trump’s. It was Melania’s.

Two — the plane. In 2017, Jeffrey Epstein gave a series of recorded interviews to the journalist Michael Wolff. The Daily Beast published the recordings in late 2024. On the tape, in Epstein’s own voice, he describes the moment Donald Trump and Melania first slept together. He says it took place on his plane.

The voice is the source. The plane is the Lolita Express. The two people on it are the President and the First Lady.

Three — the introduction. This one is the heaviest. In the released DOJ files, there is a sworn FBI proffer document — a statement made by a cooperating witness three days after Epstein’s 2019 death in federal custody. Proffer agreements carry federal criminal liability for false statements. The witness states under oath that Jeffrey Epstein — not Paolo Zampolli — introduced Donald Trump to Melania.

The Trump press operation has spent twenty-five years telling a different story. The story has Zampolli — an Italian businessman and longtime Trump friend — making the introduction at a 1998 fashion party. As of April 2026, that story is contradicted by a sworn federal document sitting in the released files.

A proffer is not a denial. A proffer is a federal felony if it is false.

Four — the witness. Amanda Ungaro, 41, lived for twenty years with Paolo Zampolli — Trump’s longtime friend, current Special Envoy for Global Partnerships, the man whose story about how the Trumps met is now contradicted by the proffer. Last June, ICE deported Ungaro to Brazil. On April 18, 2026, she gave her first English-language interview, published by the Courier’s Cover-Up investigation. Her words about Melania:

“Melania does not know the full extent of what I know.”

Ungaro has offered to testify before House Oversight if asked. She has been inside the Trump marriage for twenty years, at New Year’s dinners at Mar-a-Lago, at the inaugural table.

Five — the speech. On April 9, 2026, with no subpoena and no public demand, the First Lady walked to the Cross Hall of the White House and denied the four facts above.

Speeches like that are not given for no reason. They are given because something is coming that the speaker is trying to get out ahead of.

The Question

The question is not whether the First Lady is telling the truth. The public record answers that.

The question is why she gave the speech at all.

She was not asked to give it. She was not subpoenaed to give it. Her own husband, by his admission to the New York Times, did not know what she planned to say. CNN’s reporting, citing two White House sources, attributed the timing to her own monthslong fixation on the issue.

The First Lady of the United States is not afraid of the press. She is afraid of the testimony.

She is denying — preemptively, in prepared remarks, from a White House podium — what is about to be said about her husband under oath.

That is a role.

Why Her

Here is the part most pundits will not write, because it requires reading further back than the news cycle.

In my book The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I trace what I call the psycho-legal evolution of predation through 750 years of statute. The lineage is not metaphorical. It is a paper trail.

It begins in 1275, when the Statute of Westminster I — under King Edward I — defined rape as a property offense and set the age of consent at twelve. The statute did not protect children. It established that male desire could be reframed as governance, that violation could be disguised as virtue, and that the legal architecture of patriarchy required a second function alongside violence: the production of male innocence and female culpability.

That gendered moral inversion crossed the Atlantic. In 1662, the Virginia Assembly enacted Act XII, which declared that the children of enslaved women would inherit the condition of the mother — meaning that white men could rape Black women with impunity and convert their offspring into property. In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I name this what it is: a fusion of lust, law, and theology that transforms brutality into moral order. The pulpit blessed it. The bench enforced it. The bedroom obeyed.

Three centuries of statute followed — Maryland 1664, Virginia 1667, Virginia 1668, Virginia 1669, Maryland 1681 — each refining the same machinery. White men committed the violence. White women, by law, by custom, and by the pulpit, certified the innocence. Robert Sweat, who fathered a child by a Black woman in 1640, performed public penance in church. Margaret Cornish, the woman he raped, was tied to a whipping post and beaten until she bled.

The architecture has never collapsed. It has only modernized.

White women are the oldest alibi in America.

Melania did not invent this role. She inherited it.

Every white power structure built on this continent since 1275 has required two things to stay in equilibrium: a man willing to commit the violence, and a woman willing to certify that it did not happen. One writes the statute. The other authenticates the innocence.

Without the second function, the first collapses.

That is what was happening in the Cross Hall on April 9. Not a personal moment of grievance. Not a private decision made impulsively. A structural function being performed on schedule. A First Wife stepping into a role 750 years older than her marriage and reading from a script that has been edited many times but never rewritten.

She is not denying for herself. She is denying for him.

She is denying for the system that produced both of them — that married a Slovenian model to a New York real estate developer through the apparatus of a man who would die in federal custody seventeen years later, and that now needs her, on schedule, to walk to a podium and look the country in the eye and say I was not a participant.

The Diagnosis

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I name four psycho-cognitive defense mechanisms. They are deployed in a predictable sequence whenever whiteness — as a social and political technology — has its protected interests exposed. The mechanisms are not synonyms for lying. They are descriptions of distinct moves a system makes to protect itself.

The mechanisms, in order of deployment:

Denial. Defensiveness. Deflection. Dissociation.

The order matters because the cost of each move is higher than the last.

Denial — what April 9 was

Denial is the cheapest move. It is one sentence, given once, into a microphone, and then repeated by allies on television. It costs the speaker nothing except the fifteen minutes it takes to read the speech. It is reached for first because it works most of the time.

Denial is most effective when the listener has not seen the contradicting evidence. The April 9 speech worked on the audience that had not yet read the proffer, had not yet heard the recording, had not yet read the email, had not yet read Ungaro’s interview. For that audience — a non-trivial portion of the country — the denial closed the question.

For the audience that had read the documentary record, the denial opened a different question: Why did she give this speech at all?

Denial is followed by Defensiveness because Denial alone never holds.

Defensiveness — what is happening now

Defensiveness is what threats and lawsuits are. The billion-dollar threat against Andrew Lownie’s Entitled — the royal biographer’s book that alleged an intimate relationship between Melania and Epstein — that resulted in HarperCollins withdrawing 60,000 copies. The pre-emptive litigation strategy that surrounds the Trump press operation. The cease-and-desist letters to outlets considering follow-up reporting on the proffer document.

Defensiveness is more expensive than Denial because it requires legal resources and produces visible costs — court filings, dropped books, settlements. But it is still cheap relative to what comes next, because it operates at the level of suppression. It is a way of stopping the next denial from being needed.

In the framework, Defensiveness is the move that says: we will make telling this story expensive.

A federal judge in Florida just dismissed a major Trump defamation suit related to Epstein for not meeting the actual-malice standard. Defensiveness has limits the speaker did not believe it had. That is significant. When Defensiveness fails, Deflection deploys.

Deflection — what is coming next

Deflection is the move that redirects attention from the file to the official, from the substance to the procedure. The recent firing of an Attorney General over her handling of the Epstein file is one example, in a different lane of the broader story. But within the specific architecture of the Trump-Epstein cover, Deflection will look like this:

The press will be told to focus on the Middle East, the economy, the border, the next manufactured crisis.

The witnesses will be characterized as not credible — Ungaro will be reduced to her pending Florida charges; Wolff will be reduced to his book sales; Lownie’s source will be characterized as unverified.

The proffer document will be challenged — not on its content, but on the witness’s reliability, the redactions, the procedure.

Allies will be deployed to argue the real story is something else entirely.

Deflection is more expensive than Defensiveness because it requires coordinated political theater across multiple actors. But it has historically worked, in this country, with this particular set of facts, for a very long time.

Dissociation — what comes after Deflection fails

Dissociation is the most expensive move and the least visible. It is the move whiteness makes when Denial, Defensiveness, and Deflection have all been exhausted. It does not look like a press conference. It looks like distance.

The President will not be asked.

The First Lady will not be available.

The witnesses will be deemed not credible.

The press will move on.

The cycle will reset and begin again somewhere else, with some other story, some other denial, some other First Wife at some other podium.

Dissociation is the mechanism that allows the system to reach for Denial again the next time, with a fresh audience, on a fresh story. It is the reason the same playbook still works in 2026 that worked in the Margaret Cornish case in 1640.

This is where I expect this story to end — not with accountability, but with Dissociation. The structural pattern in The Psychopathy of Whiteness predicts it. Denial, Defensiveness, Deflection, Dissociation. Reset. Begin again.

Unless the witness walks into the chamber.

What to Watch

Three dates are now load-bearing on this story.

April 27, 2026 — Trump’s deadline to refile the dismissed $10 billion defamation suit against the Wall Street Journal over the Epstein birthday-letter reporting. If he refiles, it is Defensiveness escalating. If he does not, it is the first crack.

May 6, 2026 — Howard Lutnick, Commerce Secretary and named Epstein associate, whose family appeared with Epstein on the island in December 2012 by his own emails, is scheduled for a House Oversight deposition.

June 10, 2026 — Bill Gates is scheduled to be interviewed by House Oversight regarding his ties to Epstein.

The First Lady’s speech on April 9 cannot be read in isolation from these three dates. It was given in the context of testimony that has already been scheduled.

She gave it now because she will not get to give it later.

A man waging war on Iran posts himself healing the sick. A man who five days earlier threatened to destroy “a whole civilization” shares an image of himself as the Prince of Peace. A man whose own adviser compared him to the crucified Christ at an Easter luncheon — and who responded by saying “They call me king now. Can you believe it?” — that man, on the holiest night of the Orthodox calendar, looked at a picture of himself dressed as God and posted it without comment.

The public debate has centered on whether this was offensive. Whether it was blasphemous. Whether it was politically foolish.

That is the wrong debate.

The question is not whether the image offended Christians. The question is what kind of mind produces it — and what that mind reveals about the system that elevated it.

What the Congregation Saw

The backlash did not come from Democrats. It did not come from cable news panels or editorial boards. It came from the altar.

Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on X: “On Orthodox Easter, President Trump attacked the Pope because the Pope is rightly against Trump’s war in Iran and then he posted this picture of himself as if he is replacing Jesus. This comes after last week’s post of his evil tirade on Easter and then threatening to kill an entire civilization.” She followed it with: “It’s more than blasphemy. It’s an Antichrist spirit.”

Megan Basham, a conservative Christian commentator, called it “OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy” and demanded Trump ask God for forgiveness. Isabel Brown, a Catholic Daily Wire podcaster allied with the Trump White House, called the post “disgusting and unacceptable.” Riley Gaines said she could not understand why he would post it. Milo Yiannopoulos wrote: “We tolerated this kind of meme against our better judgment because he promised to save America and only when it was clear he didn’t actually think he was the Messiah.”

Read that last sentence again. It tells you everything.

The congregation tolerated the iconography because they believed it was performance. They are discovering it is conviction.

Allie Beth Stuckey, another conservative Christian commentator, offered the most surgically precise observation of the day: “That image is what happens when Paula White is your personal pastor and people around you are continually comparing you to Christ.”

She is naming the feedback loop. And the feedback loop is the pathology.

The Feedback Loop

In The Psychopathy of Whiteness, I define White Malignant Narcissism as an extreme personality configuration combining grandiosity, sadism, and paranoia. It underpins the emotional structure of white supremacy. It is the psychic machinery that transforms insecurity into domination.

But malignant narcissism does not sustain itself alone. It requires a congregation — a validating chorus that mirrors the narcissist’s self-image back to him until he can no longer distinguish between worship and reality.

This is exactly what Stuckey described. And the timeline proves it.

At the White House Easter luncheon this month, Trump’s spiritual adviser Paula White told him: “No one has paid the price like you have paid the price. It almost cost you your life. You were betrayed, and arrested, and falsely accused.” Then she drew the resurrection into the comparison: “Because of His resurrection, you rose up. Because He was victorious, you were victorious.”

Trump did not push back. He escalated. “On Palm Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem as crowds welcomed him with praise, honoring him as king,” he said. “They call me king now. Can you believe it?”

He then compared his legal battles to the arrest of Christ: “He was really betrayed. We know the feeling.”

The White House posted the footage. Then deleted it.

Last year, following the death of Pope Francis, Trump shared an image of himself as the Pope.

In 2019, standing on the White House lawn during a trade dispute, he looked up at the sky and said: “I am the chosen one.”

Each time, the congregation absorbed it. Each time, the boundary between metaphor and belief eroded further. Each time, the narcissist tested whether the chorus would hold.

On Sunday night, it broke.

The Four Defenses

At Monday’s press conference, Trump was asked about the image. His response was a clinical demonstration of the psycho-cognitive defense mechanisms I have spent two books documenting.

He said: “I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor and had to do with Red Cross.”

This is Denial. The image depicts a figure in a white robe and red sash, hands radiating divine light, healing a man while soldiers ascend toward heaven. Calling this a “doctor” is not a misreading. It is the refusal to acknowledge what is plainly visible — sustained through delusion, reinforced by the expectation that no one will challenge the reinterpretation.

He then said: “Only the fake news could come up with that one.”

This is Defensiveness — emotional resistance expressed as hostility toward anyone who names the reality the subject cannot tolerate.

By reframing the image as a medical scene rather than a messianic one, Trump relocated the controversy from his own grandiosity to the media’s interpretation. This is Deflection — the strategic redirection away from accountability. The classic maneuver of the personality-disordered: you are the problem for seeing what I showed you.

And beneath it all: the psychic detachment that allows a man to post an image of himself as God on the holiest night of the Orthodox calendar, minutes after attacking the Pope, and then claim — apparently without irony — that he did not understand its content. This is Dissociation. The gap between action and awareness where the disorder lives.

Denial. Defensiveness. Deflection. Dissociation.

Four mechanisms. One image. The entire architecture of whiteness performing in real time.

The Oldest Heresy

None of this is new. What happened on Sunday night is six centuries old.

In 1452, Pope Nicholas V issued the papal bull Dum Diversas, granting European monarchs permission to “invade, search out, capture, vanquish, and subdue all Saracens and pagans whatsoever... and to reduce their persons to perpetual slavery.” In 1493, Inter Caetera divided the non-Christian world between Spain and Portugal — theology as real estate, God as notary.

The Church did not merely bless conquest. It became conquest’s justification. The cross and the sword merged. The altar and the throne became indistinguishable. And over centuries, the object of worship shifted. The faith stopped being about God. It became about the faithful — their power, their purity, their divine right to rule.

Pastor Benjamin Boswell, at the 2025 Global Antiracism Summit, named this transformation precisely: “What began as Christian supremacy mutated into European supremacy, then Anglo-Saxon supremacy, and eventually White supremacy. Whether they are aware of it or not, most European Christians are not worshipping God or Jesus, but whiteness.”

This is the psycho-theological heart of what I diagnose in my work. Domination confused with salvation. Cruelty mistaken for righteousness. The self divinized. The other demonized. And power — always power — rebranded as virtue.

Trump did not invent this. He inherited it. But he is the first president to make the subtext literal — to post the image that the ideology has always carried in its bones. The man on the altar has always believed he was God. Sunday night, he simply said so.

The Savior Who Destroys

There is a thread connecting April 7 to April 12 that most commentators have missed.

On April 7, Trump threatened Iran: “A whole civilization will die tonight.” On April 12, he posted himself as Christ — healing, radiant, surrounded by the machinery of war recast as instruments of salvation.

The destroyer and the savior are the same man. And in the logic of this pathology, they must be. The one who commands the annihilation of a civilization must also be the one anointed to heal the world. The same hand that signs the order for war reaches out to touch the sick man’s forehead. The robe of the messiah and the authority of the commander-in-chief are, in this image, the same garment.

This is not hypocrisy. Hypocrisy requires awareness of contradiction. This is something clinical — the inability to distinguish between destruction and deliverance, between dominion and divinity. It is the terminal stage of a pathology I describe in my book as Malignant Diabolical Psychopathy: the fusion of state power with evangelical theology to consecrate cruelty. It is not a new phenomenon. It is colonial Christianity returning home.

What Breaks Next

The evangelical fracture is the real story. Everything else is noise.

For years, Trump’s religious base has been the most durable pillar of his coalition. They tolerated the Access Hollywood tape. They tolerated the Stormy Daniels settlement. They tolerated the E. Jean Carroll verdict. They tolerated “I am the chosen one.” They tolerated the Trump Bible. They tolerated Paula White’s Easter sermon. They tolerated the image of himself as Pope.

Each of these was a test. The narcissist is always testing whether the congregation will hold — whether the chorus will continue to mirror his self-image back to him without flinching. Each time the congregation absorbs the escalation, the narcissist receives confirmation that the delusion is shared. Each absorption raises the threshold for the next test.

Sunday night, the threshold was crossed. Not because the image was worse than what came before — it is arguably no more grandiose than “I am the chosen one” or “They call me king.” But because the narcissist, for the first time, produced the image himself. The congregation had been the ones creating the iconography. They made the flags, the murals, the memes comparing him to Christ. That was their offering. When the narcissist creates his own icon and places himself on the altar — when he no longer needs the congregation to perform the deification because he has internalized it completely — the relationship inverts. He is no longer their instrument. They are his.

That is why Greene’s language matters. “Antichrist spirit” is not political commentary. It is a theological alarm. She is saying: the man we elevated has become the thing our faith warns us about. Whether she fully grasps the clinical implications of that recognition is secondary. The recognition itself is the fracture.

The question now is whether the fracture holds — whether the congregation reassembles around the idol, as it has so many times before, or whether this is the narcissistic collapse that cannot be papered over.

I do not make predictions. I make diagnoses.

And the diagnosis is this: the patient has stopped performing health. The delusion that was once managed — contained within winks, jokes, and plausible deniability — is now the governing reality. The man who once let others call him the chosen one now generates his own divine imagery and posts it on the holiest night of the Christian calendar.

The empire is not collapsing because of external enemies. It is collapsing because of internal rot — because its gods were mirrors all along. And on Sunday night, the mirror was posted to Truth Social for the entire world to see.
