Is Columbus a weird city? Has Columbus ever been a weird city? If it is not, then how can Columbus become weird?

I fear Columbus has missed its chance to become weird, a victim of our own success. CNBC has recently declared the state of Ohio number one in the country for business, Columbus featuring prominently, of course. In June, the New York Times wrote a laudatory story about how Columbus has become an AI and advanced manufacturing hub.

“It’s wild. Everything is under construction. It feels like the Bay Area felt 13 or 14 years ago,” says Dennis DeMeyere, whom the Times says plans to open an A.I.-powered manufacturing company in Columbus.

In addition to projects by Meta and Zuckerberg, Anduril is building a $1 billion advanced weapons manufacturing factory. Forget Silicon Valley: it seems Columbus is becoming Los Angeles from the 1950s, a defense and aerospace center, minus the sunshine.

The New York Times article notes that the airport terminal expansion at John Glenn International is one expression of Columbus’s growth as a destination for international business travelers. The article also observed that many residents are not happy with the deference being shown to these companies, in the form of subsidies and the non-disclosure agreements local officials must sign, keeping the company’s plans secret from local residents.

In becoming open and friendly to business, in being defined by advanced manufacturing and tech, does this mean Columbus has abandoned any chance of becoming weird?

This past March, I was in Austin, Texas, for the SXSW EDU conference. I first visited Austin about 12 years ago. In the intervening years, Austin has become very corporate, a kind of Silicon Valley of the Southwest, complete with new skyscrapers and mountains of venture capital and soaring housing prices. Austin, which has long shouted the slogan “Keep Austin Weird,” just doesn’t seem as weird to me as it once was. In becoming a high-tech hub, I fear Columbus is watching its chance to become weird ebb away.

When we say a place is weird, we should mean more than a vibe, more than an intuition. Weirdness is more than a marketing slogan; a city cannot just announce it is weird and—poof—become weird. There are specific characteristics of weirdness.

A city is weird if it cultivates a sense of cultural distinctiveness, nurturing differences from national norms. Weird cities have dense concentrations of independent businesses and a creative ecosystem of artists, museums, makers, and performers—what I have called a scene. Weird cities have a high degree of tolerance for unconventional identities and subcultures. Civic eccentricity is evident in the form of public festivals and unusual urban rituals. Weird cities make explicit efforts to preserve a city’s distinctive local character.

Being weird matters. Weird cities attract creative talent—artists and entrepreneurs and researchers and designers and writers—in other words, the kind of people who thrive on unconventional ideas. Weirdness attracts tourists. Weirdness means a strong and resilient business ecosystem. Weird cities exhibit a greater tolerance for experimentation. (Columbus isn’t called Test City USA for nothing.) Experimentation means imagining alternatives and weird places are more future-proofed as a result. Weird cities have been shown to attract and retain young adults and have high levels of social capital and civic participation. Being weird is a competitive advantage for any city.

Perhaps Columbus used to be weird and isn’t anymore, that it had its “Austin moment” years ago. In the 1980s and 1990s, Columbus hosted an eclectic DIY scene, especially via the Columbus Community Cable Access public access cable channel. No one was more representative of the city’s weirdness than Damon Zex, whom we recently lost far too soon. Perhaps the end of the Age of Damon Zex spelled the end of Weird Columbus.

Nestled in the New York Times article is a brief mention that “an eclectic restaurant scene has sprung up in a city that was home of the first Wendy’s restaurant.” Is this a sign of weirdness beneath the corporate surface? Maybe Columbus is already weird and we just don’t acknowledge enough. As we all know, our city boasts a strong, independent neighborhood culture, distinctive places like Clintonville and German Village and Olde Town East. We host unique public festivals—the Doo Dah Parade, ComFest—and conduct unusual urban rituals. Weird places often have a college or university as an anchor institution and Ohio State certainly attracts its share of unconventional thinkers. We also have a major art and design college right downtown. Columbus supports maker spaces and galleries and experimental theaters and a local music scene. Columbus is a mecca for the comics community. We have an ever-growing number of independent bookstores dotting the city. What is missing is a national reputation for weirdness. When the New York Times writes about our city, it is as a corporate business hub, not an eclectic, eccentric city.

I am developing a “weirdness index” that rates cities on a weirdness scale. Portland and Austin (even if it is less weird) top the list. New Orleans and Asheville, North Carolina and Santa Fe are in the top 10. Columbus, according to my rankings, is quite outside the top 10, but above cities like Indianapolis and Cincinnati.

If being weird matters to us, how might Columbus move up in the rankings? Again, a marketing campaign might be necessary, but is insufficient. A city must be able to demonstrate and perform its weirdness.

Rather—or, in addition to—being business friendly, what if Columbus foregrounded its weirdness? What if the Columbus Way were redefined to mean “partnerships between the weird and the conventional?” What if we inaugurated Weird Columbus as the mirror opposite of the Columbus Partnership, an organization that promotes and drives weirdness. The Mayor’s office might establish a city Director of Weirdness. A pledge for any mayoral candidate should be to make Columbus number one in the country on the Weirdness Index.

Maybe Columbus is just weird enough. About ten years ago, I was waiting at a light on the corner of Price Avenue and High Street. Heading north in the middle of High Street was Frankie Hejduk on a skateboard trailing a Crew flag behind him. I smiled and said “I live in a weird city,” the only conclusion I could possibly draw.
