Welcome to the September 2026 edition of the Small Business Center newsletter. The academic year is back in full swing, and we are ready with a wide array of business resources and events. A few programs are highlighted below, but be sure to check out our full calendar to stay up to date with everything we’ve got going on. There is a lot of info in this month’s edition, so let’s jump right in.

Team Update

Library Card Sign-up Month

An initiative of the American Library Association, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September since 1987 to mark the beginning of the school year, combat illiteracy, and encourage communities everywhere to explore all the offerings that having a library card unlocks. This year’s theme, “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes,” is a reminder that libraries offer something for everyone—no matter your age, background, or goals. Whether you’re checking out a classic story or trying something new, finding harmony at the library’s programs, finding your focus in a study room or vibing out in a cozy nook, or composing your future with new skills, there’s a seat in the front row at the library for you, and your library card is the ticket.

Library Closure

All Durham County Library locations will be closed on Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day and will reopen on Tuesday, September 8th.

Monthly Programs

Small Business Finances and Lending: Come learn more about small business financial literacy. We'll discuss the different types of small businesses and their corresponding documentation as well as managing the cash flow cycle of operating your business. This session will also highlight common financial challenges new entrepreneurs face and practical strategies to overcome them. Participants will gain insights into budgeting, forecasting, and building sustainable financial habits. Whether you're just starting out or looking to strengthen your operations, this workshop will equip you with tools to make confident financial decisions. Hosted by Fifth Third Bank at University Place.

The Sunday Scaries: Calm the Worry Before the Week Begins: Does Sunday night come with a knot in your stomach? The weekend’s almost gone, the upcoming week is already full, and that low hum of dread creeps in. You’re not alone, but the Sunday Scaries don’t have to ruin your weekend or the week ahead. In this workshop, we’ll look at what those Sunday Scaries really are and why they hit hard as the fall calendar fills up. Together we’ll try simple, practical ways to quiet a racing mind that can work anywhere: in the car, at the kitchen sink, or when sleep feels far away. You’ll leave with a small plan so next Sunday feels steadier. Bring a pen, some paper or your favorite journal, and your real self. Led by Laura Bey, a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach based in Durham.

Women in G.L.A.M. featuring Black Voices in Galleries, Libraries, Archives, & Museums: Presented by Leola Curatorial, “Women in G.L.A.M.” is an intergenerational and cross-disciplinary public conversation centering the experiences, contributions, and leadership of women of color working across galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. This event brings together cultural workers to discuss the realities of building careers within the institutions responsible for preserving, interpreting, and sharing our collective histories.

Fall SCORE Networking & Panel: Join us for a lively and informative panel featuring local SCORE mentors as they share their backgrounds, business specialties, and practical advice for entrepreneurs at any stage. Learn how SCORE’s free mentoring, workshops, and resources can support your business goals. After the panel, stay for a relaxed networking session where you can meet the mentors one-on-one, connect with fellow entrepreneurs, and explore the library’s business services and tools. Whether you’re launching a new idea, growing your business, or looking to give back as a mentor, this session will help you make valuable connections and learn about the resources available to you.

Welcome to the August 2026 edition of the Small Business Center newsletter. After taking the month of July to refocus on our efforts, we’re back with a packed schedule of business and career development library programs. Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey in last month’s edition; we’re always happy to receive feedback on what we’re doing and how we can better serve the community (if you have anything to share with us, feel free to tell us in an email). Farewell Jana!

Jana Bradley, our resident business data guru, has taken a new position here at Durham County Library and will be leaving the Small Business Center. Please join us in congratulating her on this opportunity and wishing her well!

Summer Reading

After hundreds of Summer Reading programs and completed reading logs, it’s safe to say that Summer Reading 2026 - Unearth A Story has been a huge success. We’re always so appreciative of the outpour of support and enthusiasm from our local community, and it really is because of readers like you that we’re able to do what we do. August 8th marks the end of the program, but you still have until August 15th to finish up any remaining reading logs and turn them in to any Durham County Library location for an extra entry into the grand prize raffle. All About Medicare: Confused about Medicare? We’ve got you covered! This free, informative session offered by the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), a division of the NC Department of Insurance, will break down everything you need to know about Medicare—who’s eligible, when, and how to enroll, and the different coverage options available. Learn the differences between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Prescription Drug Plans, and Medigap policies. We’ll also cover what Medicare does and doesn’t cover, important enrollment periods, programs that can help with costs, and recent updates like capped insulin prices and drug price negotiations. Whether you’re approaching 65, already enrolled, or helping a loved one, this presentation will give you the tools to make confident, informed decisions about your healthcare.

What Should I Put in My Lunchbox?: Join this nutrition workshop designed to inspire and educate participants on creating delicious, nutritious, and balanced meals for your lunchbox. Learn how to incorporate essential nutrients, explore a variety of food groups, and discover creative ideas for meal prep that are both satisfying and health conscious. Whether you’re packing lunch for work, school, or on-the-go, this program will equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to make every packed meal something to look forward to. This workshop is presented by licensed and registered dietitian Lucy Hayhurst, founder of Well Balanced Nutrition.

Shelf Sessions w/ Leffty: Out of North Carolina, Leffty is an American band founded by drummer Joshua Davell Scott and vocalist Kingsley Priester. Blending modern alternative, R&B, and soul, the band creates a sound that feels atmospheric, intimate, and emotionally raw. The name Leffty comes from the idea of embracing what makes you different. Like being left-handed - uncommon and sometimes misunderstood - the band believes that uniqueness isn't something to hide, but something to lean into. Join us for an evening in the library as we listen to some live and local music.

It’s sort of like Tiny Desk, but just in the library :)

Summer Reading

Summer Reading 2026 is in full swing and continues through Saturday, August 8! This year’s theme, “Unearth a Story,” celebrates the joy of discovery that reading brings. All Durham County Library locations are offering a variety of programs and special events, each with its own unique lineup. And don’t forget to complete your reading logs! Turn in your first one at any library location and pick out a cool prize. Each additional completed log is another entry into the raffle for the grand prize. There’s something for everyone, and patrons of all ages are invited to join in the fun. Keep reading, exploring, and learning with us all summer long!

Library Closure

All Durham County Library locations will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, and Saturday, July 4th, in observance of Independence Day. Main Library will reopen on Sunday, July 5th, and all other locations will reopen Monday, July 6th.

Monthly Programs

The Small Business Center team will be taking a programming break for the month of July to rest, recharge, and recalibrate. As we plan for the rest of the year, we want to hear from you! NC IDEA Fall 2026 Grant Cycle

Whether you have just launched a startup or are looking to grow and scale your company, NC IDEA has resources that can help in the success of your journey when and where you need it most. Early stage, growth-oriented companies can apply for one of two different NC IDEA grants:

• NC IDEA MICRO awards $10K project-based grants to young companies looking to validate assumptions and develop a business model.

• NC IDEA SEED offers $50K grants to early-stage companies, often the critical funding they need to scale faster.

1 Million Cups Durham

Every week, entrepreneurs present business ideas to the local community and learn how those around them can support their business in its growth. Your local 1 Million Cups (1MC) community gives you the opportunity to refine your elevator pitch to a diverse audience, access training programs, and engage with a network for support. This national movement has found a Durham home at echo, a local entrepreneur support organization, and meets every Wednesday morning at 9am.

Every one of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges serve as part of the statewide Small Business Center Network (SBCN) dedicated to guiding budding entrepreneurs through the steps of considering, planning, developing, opening, and operating a small business (Durham County Library’s Small Business Center is a separate entity). In addition to services, resources, and in-person programs, the SBCN offers free webinars that cover a wide variety of business topics. Shelf Sessions with Tecoby: Hailing from Rocky Mount, North Carolina — the birthplace of jazz legend Thelonious Monk — Tecoby is an artist who defies categorization. We’ll be celebrating Financial Literacy Month, National Library Week, & Library Worker's Day all within the next 30 days. Library Fest 2026 - The Stories that Built Us

In celebration of National Library Week and all that libraries do: Library Fest is an annual community celebration and showcase of the many diverse ways the library is a part of your life. Since its inaugural year in 2020, Library Fest has hosted programs that encourage discovery, connect the community, and lead in literacy with our STEAM, business, humanities, and local history programming. Each year includes unique offerings and ways to participate in this week-long festival in addition to attending programs.

This year’s theme is “The Stories that Built U.S.” The United States of America will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. This gives us an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s past, honor the contributions of all people, and shape a better future for generations to come. With over 40 events on a diverse range of topics, specially curated booklists, and more, go beyond the book this coming Spring and join us for Library Fest!

Home Movie Day: Home Movie Day is an international celebration of amateur home movie film and video. Look through your attics and search out your family’s home movies. Bring 8mm, Super8mm, 16mm film, VHS, and Video8/Hi8 videotapes. Don’t have any to bring? That’s okay! You can also just show up and watch the films of others and play Home Movie Day Bingo.

Raleigh’s A/V Geeks Transfer Services will transfer film to digital formats for free on-site. This service will be first come first serve and films will be digitized in order of participants on the signup sheet. Only 5 minutes of film will be digitized per participant slot, but people can sign up again should time allow. Only home movies on film and video will be shown, not commercial videos. Materials for digitization will not be accepted after the event, but information on how to have them digitized by A/V Geeks at a later date will be provided

Many entrepreneurs don’t struggle with a lack of ideas — they struggle with too many. This interactive workshop is designed for startup entrepreneurs (in business 5 years or less) who feel pulled in multiple directions, say “yes” too often, and find themselves busy but not moving forward.

Join us for this interactive, 60-minute intensive where we’ll move beyond surface-level self-care into something deeper. Self-care might be a bath or a massage, which are wonderful practices. But self-compassion is about how you relate to yourself during difficult times. It’s the foundation for all future self-care.

January - National Mentoring Month

National Mentoring Month is a campaign started in 2002 by MENTOR, a non-profit organization that seeks to promote the youth mentoring movement within the United States. Every January, they seek to raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms, recruit individuals to mentor, and promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their constituents in mentoring. Some key dates throughout the month are I Am a Mentor Day (January 6), International Mentoring Day (January 17), Martin Luther King Jr National Day of Service (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), and Thank Your Mentor Day (January 28).

Farewell 2025…

Welcome to the December 2025 edition of the Small Business Center newsletter! It’s been an incredible year, and we want to thank our patrons and newsletter readers for joining us along the journey. As we look forward to 2026, we will continue providing workshops and business resources to help you and your business. As IndyWeek’s best co-working space in Durham for 2025, we are excited to see everyone again on the fourth floor at Main Library in 2026! (We have stickers for you up here)

New Library Director

Last month, Durham County announced Dana Conners as the new director of Durham County Library, effective January 5, 2026. With more than 30 years of experience in public libraries across North Carolina and Texas, Conners has held leadership roles in systems serving mid-sized and large communities, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Union, Cabarrus, and New Hanover Counties. As Library Director, Conners will oversee library operations, including strategic planning, programming, staff development, and partnerships that promote equitable access to information and educational opportunities.

Holiday Markets!

‘Tis the holiday season, and that means ‘tis also the season for holiday markets! Handmade crafts, gifts, delicious food, and much more awaits. Whether you visit the Durham German Market at Durham Central Park, the Holiday Market at the Durham, or any other market in the Triangle area, be sure to come out to support local businesses and see what the Durham community has to offer!

Monthly Programs

Adult study hall is an opportunity to get stuff done with professional support from an executive function coach and peer support from other Triangle locals. It promotes accountability, productivity, and focus in a low-key and supportive setting.

Each session is a little over 90 minutes long. You can join late or leave early and share your plans for the session or not. It’s your time! Bring your earbuds, laptop, planner, notebooks, lists, or whatever you need to get to work, and you’ll leave surprised at how much you were able to accomplish. Come join our supportive, friendly, low-pressure community and get some stuff done!

Library Sunday Hours

Beginning Sunday, October 5, Durham County’s Main Library location in downtown Durham will reopen for Sunday hours. The Durham community is invited to visit from 1 – 6 p.m. Please note that Durham County Library’s six other brick-and-mortar locations throughout the County will remain closed on Sundays.

Sunday reopening is another great opportunity to experience all the library has to offer. For additional information on library hours and locations, please visit our website.

Dr. Brinnae Bent, a Duke University professor and founder of AI consulting firm Tensor & Trust, is presenting this two-session workshop to teach small business owners how to innovatively use AI.

In session two, Applying AI to Bottlenecks in Your Workflows, learn how to identify inefficiencies in your workflows and explore simple, high-leverage AI solutions. This hands-on session includes startup case studies and guided exercises to help you map bottlenecks and brainstorm practical AI applications.

AI Foundations for Startups: Durham County Library's Small Business Center is proud to host our Artificial Intelligence Workshop Series! Dr. Brinnae Bent, a Duke University professor and founder of AI consulting firm Tensor & Trust, is presenting this two-session workshop to teach small business owners how to innovatively use AI.

In session one, build a solid understanding of AI fundamentals while exploring common misconceptions. Through real-world case studies, examine how startups are successfully using AI internally and how others are building AI-powered products from the ground up. Session two will be held next month.

Entrepreneurial Mindset Training Course: Through NC Live, the state library, you can earn an Entrepreneurial Mindset bronze level certification by completing eight self-pace modules. You’ll learn how to be resourceful, develop networking skills, identify limitations, and so much more directly from everyday entrepreneurs.

Film Screening of Story & Pictures By: The power of representation in stories cannot be overstated. Stories give people a voice and shape identity. “Story & Pictures By” focuses on three authors—Christian Robinson, Yuyi Morales, and Mac Barnett—who are creating children’s picture books that contain more diversity and greater representation than ever before, on topics ranging from immigration and sexual identity to race and class. We gain an understanding of their unique perspectives by following their lives and art.

We made it to the second month of 2025… wow does time fly. The library has a slew of programs this month for all ages from Main’s Teen Services Career & College Prep Series to Black History Trivia at Bragtown Branch Library. Speaking of Black History, the Small Business Center at Durham County Library is hosting three events this month in recognition of the legacies, achievements, and culture shaped by the African American experience, including a special edition of the Vinyl Vault Club.

Breaking the Ice: Networking for Entrepreneurs: Join us for an engaging networking event designed to help entrepreneurs connect, collaborate, and thrive! Whether you’re a seasoned business owner or just starting, this event will provide a welcoming atmosphere to meet like-minded individuals. Through fun icebreakers and facilitated discussions, you’ll build new relationships, share ideas, and create valuable connections. Don’t miss this chance to expand your network and ignite your entrepreneurial journey!

SCORE: Welcome to Entrepreneurship: The class will be presented by Mr. Morris Wallack, a certified SCORE mentor, certified instructor and Chapter Chair. Mr. Wallack has over 30 years of business experience, has taught classes for SCORE for the last eight years, and has counseled hundreds of for-profit and non-profit startups in the Triangle.
