On August 20, 2026, The Guardian published an open letter, “To Iran’s political prisoners, trapped ‘between two blades of scissors.’” It boasts an impressive ensemble of signatories, including Angela Davis, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Robin D. G. Kelley (who has since retracted his name), Rashid Khalidi, and Judith Butler, among others.

Almost four thousand Iranians have been murdered since Operation Epic Fury commenced. Yet this motley crew of self-proclaimed ‘anti-imperialists’ presents a short-winded attempt at solidarity towards those who “face the domination of the Islamic Republic” on one side, while being actively bombed by the US and Israel on the other.

There are some crucial questions that need answering: Who is this open letter’s intended audience? What does it mean for this particular message to be coming from this group of individuals, whose voices The Guardian has platformed and amplified, at this specific point in time? How are we to interpret the assertion that Iran only ‘claims’ to resist Western imperialism? To what extent is Iran’s role in the Axis of Resistance merely a ‘purported’ ideological value? Above all, how are we to interpret the evidence laid before us?

Establishing a theoretical basis for this analysis is essential. During the COVID pandemic, I had the privilege to study with History Professor Erik Ching at Furman University. He began his course with a simple instruction that still sits with me today: “If you absorb nothing else in this class, learn the following: History, like many other things in life, is all about evidence and interpretation.” To arrive at the essence of a thing, one must clearly address evidence and interpretation as dynamic, interacting forces. It is in this way that history comes to life as a constantly developing, non-stagnant force, ripping through the past and barging in on the present, becoming material reality.

Dr. Ching’s philosophy–evidence and interpretation–is also lended credence by the theory of dialectical materialism. As explains in his book, The Purity Fetish and the Crisis of Western Marxism, the “law of dialectics” represents the “movement and interconnection of all things. This law is [also] called the negation of the negation… and it describes the processes wherein the old is simultaneously canceled and preserved while being elevated into something new.” We highlight here the notion that lacking “a proper understanding of dialectics, in other words, without a concrete understanding of the world, the important differences created by a change in context is obscured and treated one-sidedly.”1

In blending Dr. Ching and Dr. Garrido’s respective analyses, we see that dialectical materialism provides a concrete explanation as to how the worlds of evidence and interpretation interact with each other. We will utilize this approach in our analysis of the attempt at solidarity these ‘anti-imperialists’ have signed and published via one of the UK’s foremost mainstream media outlets.

So begins the author’s denunciation of “the repression of the Iranian people and their political prisoners by forces both at home and abroad.” The core of the letter’s ‘anti-imperial’ stance lies in its rejection of “the Islamic Republic that, from its inception, enforced absolute social and political control based on an exclusionary ideology. It is a system that claims to counter imperial power while using its very logic of domination.” But that’s not all–our authors lament that “on the other side, [imprisoned Iranians] face the aggression and violence of the very imperialist and Zionist forces the Islamic Republic purports to stand against” (emphasis added).

In the eyes of our authors, if one is to take an anti-imperialist position with regards to the Amerikan empire (as they claim to do), so too must we condemn the ‘imperial power’ of the Iranian government. Their justification for believing as such is the fact that the Iranian ‘regime’ is responsible for “the arbitrary arrests and the horrific wave of state executions” currently taking place in the wake of widespread violent protests throughout the country. The justification of how this display of authoritarianism amounts to imperialism, however, is absent from the letter. What also goes altogether unmentioned is the very real evidence of Amerikan and Israeli-backed groups, many of them armed and military-trained, making up the majority of violent offenders during these protests.

Thus, as Margaret Kimberly of Black Agenda Report points out, while our authors claim to be speaking on behalf of ‘arbitrarily’ imprisoned Iranians, the letter makes absolutely no effort to illuminate its readers as to who exactly these individuals are. In reality, The Guardian itself was responsible for platforming former fashion blogger Deepa Parent’s so-called ‘reporting’ on Iran–an operation which propagated the ‘30,000 dead during Iranian protests’ narrative so heavily relied on by Western media outlets to justify the regime change attempt that culminated in Ayatollah Khomeini’s assassination.

If The Guardian’s letter were taking an authentic anti-imperialist stance, it would be addressed not to the outlet’s Western audience, but instead penned in honor of the dozens of school children massacred by the Amerikan regime’s first attack of the war, the Minab bombing. Instead, our authors refer to some nebulous group of unidentified prisoners–many of whom, as we mentioned, are now proven to be linked to US and Israel’s intelligence agencies.

As if to erase all doubt of their intent with this attempt at solidarity, our authors go so far as to “see the same logic of domination when Israel uses ‘administrative detention’ to hold Palestinian political prisoners for years without charge.” In other words, the country providing the most material support to Palestinian resistance forces is equated to the genocidal Zionist entity in the minds of these ‘anti-imperialists.’

If there exists any true ally of the Palestinians at this moment in history, it is the Iranian people. Theirs remains the only government on the planet to sustainably facilitate the continual resistance to the US-backed Israeli regime. Invoking the oppression of Palestinians without acknowledging the concrete ways in which Iran has come to their aid at the most critical of moments—most importantly the current moment—reveals much with regards to the true intention of The Guardian’s letter.

Unfortunately, our authors do not stop here. So too do they proclaim to “see the connections between [Iran and the West’s] carceral systems sharing intelligence and governance techniques, such as when the USP Marion prison in Illinois became a blueprint for prisons built in Iran and Israel in the 1960s. Whether it is a border wall or a prison gate, the goal is the same: to silence people through fear, domination, and isolation.” With this particular passage, one can understand the promptness with which Robin D. G. Kelley published his shameful video on social media, announcing he intended to retract his signature from the open letter. Those on the editorial staff of The Guardian seem to have let slip past them the fact that it was a US-backed Pahlavi dictatorship in the 1960s which built the prisons they are referring to here.

And yet, to our authors, Iran’s clearly defensive actions in the face of what has descended into an all-out military invasion of the country just provide more evidence of “the logic of carceral states everywhere: when they fail to address the crises people face, they simply attempt to criminalize or disappear the people themselves.” Unmentioned are the crippling policies of Amerikan economic terrorism causing widespread suffering among the Iranian people.

If Iranians are indeed–as the composers of this piece of propaganda claim–“trapped between two blades,” one of these blades is surely much wealthier, larger, deadlier, and capable of printing the world’s reserve currency (for now). The false dichotomy imposed upon us readers by Davis, Kelley, Khalidi, and company squeezes the life out of every crucial bit of context available. In effect, the maneuvers of the Iranian government against the backdrop of Amerikan capitalist hegemony are perceived as equally condemnable as the actions of the US regime itself–while such measures are unequivocally the cause of the majority of the Iranian people’s suffering.

Why is this position such a flagrant violation of the very ‘anti-imperialist’ values our authors claim to espouse? The answer should now arrive to us in simple fashion: the Palestinian genocide has been occurring for more than a century (Rashid Khalidi, a Palestinian-American and himself a signatory of this letter, acknowledges as much in his book The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017). But for the vast majority of those living within the US it has existed as a political and moral issue only since October of 2023. We lack the knowledge as a nation that there are very few countries who have contributed in such concrete ways to the Palestinian resistance as Iran. (Indeed, as former US intelligence agents Flint & Hillary Mann Leverett admit in their 2013 book Going to Tehran, “Just as Iran had supported Hizbollah’s entry into Lebanese politics, it backed Hamas’s political debut.”)2

More than a decade later, we see that these entities comprise the Axis of Resistance to Western imperialism: Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran’s armed forces make up the population of the world most immediately and brutally impacted by the military actions of the Amerikan regime and its ‘allies.’ But quite the opposite message is conveyed in The Guardian’s ‘anti-imperialist open letter.’ It can only follow that, in the spirit of Dr. Ching’s framework referenced above, our interpretation of the evidence laid before us is one of a blanket condemnation wrapped up in a shoddy layer of one-dimensional, rhetorical solidarity.

To contrast the sentiments imparted upon The Guardian’s Western (largely non-Iranian) audience, we can turn to some concrete examples of true anti-imperialist revolutionaries. One such figure is Booker Omole of the “Communist Party Marxist-Kenya” (CPMK), who recently survived two assassination attempts by the US-backed Kenyan government. On July 4, 2026, General Secretary Omole published the following declaration on Facebook in commemoration of the recently-assassinated Ayatollah Khomeini:

[The CPMK does not] share Ayatollah Khamenei’s religious worldview, nor do we approach society from the standpoint of political theology. Yet revolutionary honesty demands that we recognise those who consistently stood against imperialism and defended the sovereignty of oppressed nations. Our admiration for Ayatollah Khamenei was never based upon religion. It was based upon his uncompromising opposition to imperialism, Zionism, colonial domination and the arrogance of the powerful states that continue to exploit the peoples of the world…

Our solidarity therefore does not arise from agreement on every question of philosophy, religion or social organization. It arises from a concrete analysis of the principal contradiction confronting oppressed nations in the present epoch. Wherever peoples resist imperialist domination, defend their sovereignty and oppose colonial aggression, objective conditions create the possibility for common struggle despite ideological differences. This reflects not tactical convenience but the dialectics of the international anti-imperialist movement.

By signing The Guardian’s letter, our authors have utterly neglected the core of Omole’s argument, that “one of the defining features of [Khamenei’s] international legacy was his unwavering,” and ultimately dialectical, “position on Palestine.” Omole highlights the fact that “Long before it became widely acknowledged in international discourse, Ayatollah Khamenei consistently maintained that the Palestinian question was fundamentally one of settler colonialism, occupation and the denial of an entire people’s right to self-determination. His steadfast support for the Palestinian people made him a source of hope for millions who continue to resist colonial domination and dispossession.” Indeed, within Omole’s framework, Khamenei (and by extension the Iranian national consciousness) “understood that the struggle of Palestine was not an isolated national question but one expression of the wider struggle against colonial domination, racial oppression and imperialist intervention.”

We quote Omole’s statement at length because it contains the essence of the argument that is–we aim to infer with this essay–intentionally disregarded, if not altogether ignored, by this open letter. While this clearly serves the interests of The Guardian as a mainstream media outlet that bears the still-fading reputation of a once ‘progressive’ source, the letter’s signatories are still cause for some confusion. Particularly that of Mumia Abu Jamal, who has taken truly anti-imperialist positions regarding Iran in the past, and whose signature was reportedly falsified according to such well-known leftist figures as Vijay Prashad of the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research.

While the details regarding Mumia Abu Jamal remain in dispute, we hope to have established here that 1) the authors of The Guardian’s open letter are either willingly dishonest or misrepresented as signatories; 2) those whose signatures we can count on being genuine (all except for Abu Jamal and D. G. Kelley’s) are acting as reactionary agents of the Amerikan empire; and 3) it is first and foremost Iranian leadership–and by extension the Iranian people themselves–that have contributed materially to the resistance against Zionism and Western colonialism. As journalist and author Stephen Gowans posited in his blog What’s Left shortly after the open letter was published, to ignore as much is either a public display of ignorance or a calculated attempt to “change the channel.”

We must come to understand that, as Gowans says, “which of Iran’s repressions are justifiable and which are not…is a question for another time and hardly relevant when Iran is under attack and the priority of those who seek to fight, rather than serve, the reaction, is to do what one can to bring about an end to yet another eruption of US-Israeli imperial aggression. That means remaining focused on the immediate aim, not [issuing] quixotic anti-authoritarian proclamations,” such as those found within The Guardian’s letter.

The crowds of literally millions of civilians joining forces in the squares of Tehran to denounce the genocidal machinations of the US regime show us that the ‘immediate aim’ is plain as day for the people of Iran themselves. For those of us within the imperial core, the proverbial belly of the Amerikan empire, there remains much work to be done to combat the narratives such as those established by The Guardian and its lackeys.

While proponents of artificial intelligence (”AI”) paint an idyllic picture of how the groundbreaking technology is poised to eliminate the ills plaguing society, their unbridled optimism continues to be met with skepticism by their opponents. From fears over the economic repercussions of the rapid loss of jobs that advancements in AI may not be able to outpace to the technology’s applications as the framework for the apparatus of a panopticon surveillance state, concerns over the impact of AI mar the utopian vision its advocates have with an even more dystopian outlook of the future it will usher in. A look inside of the Pandora’s Box being opened by AI was glimpsed following a decision by a federal appeals court ruling in favor of protecting AI-generated child pornography.

On August 25th, 2026, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ruled that the First Amendment protects an individual’s right to privately possess images and videos of child sexual abuse created using AI, so long as the child sex abuse material (”CSAM”) does not depict a real child and remains in the privacy of the possessor’s home. The federal appellate court issued the unanimous ruling from a panel of three U.S. circuit judges: Judge John Z. Lee, Judge Doris L. Pryor, and Judge Joshua P. Kolar. The case came to the court in the matter of U.S. v. Anderegg, a title that now stands poised to challenge longstanding Supreme Court precedent governing how the law addresses CSAM.

The pivotal case centers on Steven Anderegg, 42, of Holmen, Wisconsin. Anderegg was arrested in May 2024 on suspicion of mass production of AI-generated CSAM. Prosecutors alleged that he used an AI image generator called Stable Diffusion to create over 13,000 images depicting child sex abuse by entering prompts into the platform, including thousands of realistic images of prepubescent minors. In a press release announcing his arrest, the U.S. Department of Justice revealed Anderegg described how he created the AI CSAM through the text-to-image generative AI model in a chat with a 15-year-old boy on the social media platform Instagram. The DOJ press release chronicled how Anderegg not only described how he generated the images to the minor, but that he sent the boy several AI-generated images of minors displaying their genitals. Following their exchange, Instagram reported Anderegg’s account to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (”NCMEC”) through its CyberTipline. The NCMEC followed suit by alerting federal authorities.

On May 15th, 2024, a federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin returned an indictment against Anderegg, charging him with producing, distributing, and possessing obscene visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and transferring obscene materials to a minor under the age of 16. Under those charges, Anderegg faces a maximum penalty of 70 years in prison and a mandatory minimum of five years.

Ahead of his trial originally scheduled to begin on February 18th, 2025, Anderegg’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the four counts brought against him on September 23rd, 2024. His defense counsel cited a myriad of federal cases in support of their argument that the statutes Anderegg was charged under were unconstitutional because the AI CSAM he created, possessed, and shared did not depict any actual children, thus the charges violated his rights under the First Amendment.

On February 13th, 2025, Chief Judge James D. Peterson of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin granted the motion for dismissal in part, dismissing the possession charge against Anderegg while allowing the other charges to proceed. Judge Peterson granted the lone dismissal of the possession charge in agreement with the defense’s argument that precedent set by the Supreme Court case Stanley v. Georgia (1969) protected Anderegg’s right to possess obscene material in the privacy of his home. Although subsequent SCOTUS cases do not extend that same protection to the possession of CSAM, the nature of the images kept by Anderegg being generated by AI did not allow the court to treat them as CSAM under the charge for possession. That distinction culminated in the dismissal of the possession charge against Anderegg, setting the stage for a potential review by the Supreme Court that could reshape precedent on how CSAM is viewed in the eyes of the law.

For decades, the foundation of the Supreme Court of the United States’ (”SCOTUS”) precedents restricting First Amendment protections from CSAM was rooted in the landmark decisions of New York v. Ferber (1982) and Osborne v. Ohio (1990).

In Ferber the court ruled that First Amendment protections do not extend to the production or sale of CSAM because each act intrinsically relies on the sexual abuse of children. In making that determination, the SCOTUS ruled that the First Amendment standards regarding obscenity set forth by the landmark decision of Miller v. California (1973) need not be satisfied regarding the manufacture or dissemination of CSAM because the government’s compelling interests are not in regulating free speech but in preventing the sexual abuse of children.

The SCOTUS extended the constitutional prohibitions set by Ferber to the possession of child sex abuse material when deciding Osborne in 1990. That decision also created an exception to the holding of Stanley, which allows Americans to possess obscene materials in the privacy of their home, by making the distinction that the possession of child sex abuse materials itself relies on its production and dissemination and thus promotes the sexual abuse of children. In making that determination, the court found that the government making the possession of CSAM illegal does not infringe upon the First Amendment, as laws are made in the interest of protecting children and not acting out of a paternalistic interest of regulating citizens’ minds that would otherwise be unconstitutional.

Two decades after the Ferber decision, the court revisited the precedent it set when considering the matter of Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition (2002). In Ashcroft, the Free Speech Coalition filed a lawsuit challenging provisions of the Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996 (”CPPA”) as being overly broad and thus violations of First Amendment protections of free speech. Before the legislation of the CPPA in 1996, Congress defined child pornography with reference to the standard set by Ferber. The CPPA added two categories expanding the legal definition of child pornography: 1. “any visual depiction, including any photograph, film, video, picture, or computer or computer-generated image or picture” that “is, or appears to be, of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct” and 2. “any sexually explicit image that was advertised, promoted, presented, described, or distributed in such a manner that conveys the impression it depicts a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct.” In Ashcroft, the SCOTUS ultimately ruled that those two provisions were aimed at categories of protected speech other than obscenity or child pornography and were thus unconstitutional.

The foundation of the court’s opinion laid in the conclusion that the CPPA prohibited speech regardless of any serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value that it may have. Unlike the decisions of Ferber and Osborne, which laid out the government’s interests in protecting children from sexual abuse rather than regulating aspects of free speech, provisions of the CPPA allowed the government to prohibit the virtual depiction of minors engaged in sexual activity as illegal despite those depictions being long-standing themes in art and literature. The court reasoned that under the plain meaning of the statutory construction of the CPPA, the William Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet could potentially be seen as an example of art and literature depicting these acts that the language of the law could render illegal. In referencing Ferber, the court deemed that the two provisions under the CPPA being examined were too broad to treat as solely being in the interest of protecting children from sexual abuse because they could be applied to examples where no actual children were involved in the depictions they described, such as works of literary or artistic merit that could be criminalized as child pornography under the law.

Following the decision in Ashcroft, members of Congress were outraged by the ruling and began working on a bill to address the concerns raised by the court. Republican member of the United States House of Representatives representing the 16th District of Florida, Mark Foley, succinctly summarized the feelings of members of Congress by stating how he believed that “the high court sided with pedophiles over children” when deciding Ashcroft. Congress subsequently passed the PROTECT ACT of 2003, which fortified existing law governing CSAM. Section 504(a) of the PROTECT Act added a new section to Title 18 of the United States Code, the main federal body of law defining crimes and criminal procedure, under 18 U.S.C. § 1466, which was originally enacted by the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act of 1988. The PROTECT Act added § 1466A to Title 18, a statute titled “Obscene visual representations of the sexual abuse of children.” The statute set outlined criminal offenses concerning the production, distribution, and possession of visual depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Under the new statute, subsection (c) included a nonrequired element of offense that expressly states that “It is not a required element of any offense under this section that the minor depicted actually exist” in a maneuver to address the precedent set by the Ashcroft decision.

The addition of § 1466A to Title 18 of the United States Code by the PROTECT Act ultimately enacted the statutes that federal prosecutors charged Anderegg under. Anderegg was charged under two provisions of 18 U.S.C. § 1466A, namely § 1466A(a)(1) and § 1466A(b)(1) on three separate counts: one count of production of obscene virtual CSAM under § 1466A(a)(1), one count of distribution of obscene virtual CSAM under § 1466A(a)(1), and one count of possession of obscene virtual CSAM under § 1466A(b)(1). He also was charged on one count of transferring obscene matter to a minor under a separate statute, 18 U.S.C. § 1470, for sending the virtual CSAM to the 15-year-old boy over Instagram.

The ruling in U.S. district court partially granting the motion for dismissal filed by the defense for Anderegg only deemed that the charge under 18 U.S.C. § 1466A(b)(1) for possession was unconstitutional. The appellate court’s consideration of the appeal of the dismissal of that lone charge held that the count under 18 U.S.C. § 1466A(b)(1) violated the First Amendment due to precedent set forth by Stanley and Ashcroft, since no actual children were involved in the generation of the AI CSAM. In its ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit highlighted the government’s concession that it could not link the images to any actual child in either their depictions or production. That concession meant that the precedents set forth by Stanley and Ashcroft were enough to affirm the lower court’s action and uphold the dismissal of the possession charge against Anderegg.

Following the ruling issued by his appellate court, Judge John Z. Lee issued a stark warning on how existing legal precedent is not equipped to address CSAM in an age of rapid technological advancement ushered in by AI. “Given the relentless advancement in artificial intelligence models, we have some concerns about the lines these cases draw, but we are not free to redraw them ourselves,” Lee wrote, compelling the Supreme Court to provide additional guidance on the issue. His warning echoed the dissenting opinion of Chief Justice William Rehnquist in Ashcroft, joined by Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, when he ominously forecast that the rapid advancement of technology would soon make it impossible to distinguish between images of actual children and those purely computer-generated. “Congress has a compelling interest in ensuring the ability to enforce prohibitions of actual child pornography, and we should defer to its findings that rapidly advancing technology soon will make it all but impossible to do so,” Rehnquist wrote in his dissent.

Federal prosecutors who now face the question of whether to petition the SCOTUS to review the decision rendered by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in the matter of U.S. v. Anderegg find themselves grappling with the changing landscape of CSAM in an age of AI, which makes enforcing existing laws increasingly complex. In order to successfully keep the law on pace with the rapid acceleration of technology, the U.S. Department of Justice must demonstrate that AI CSAM poses the same risks, even when its production does not directly involve any actual children, to extend the precedents set forth by New York v. Ferber and Osborne v. Ohio in order to effectively prosecute a new generation of sexual predators.

Proponents of that argument assert that the rise of AI CSAM poses significant hazards to children because those materials normalize the sexualization of children, allow for the advertisement of CSAM, and make the line between artificially generated CSAM impossible to distinguish from any involving real children. Those dangers further insulate sexual predators from justice by enabling them to hide behind the veil of AI to shield their crimes and conceal the identities of their victims. For prosecutors, harnessing those concerns within a legal argument that can effectively address existing archaic case law remains the crucial hurdle they have yet to surpass. The case of U.S. v. Anderegg not only highlights the imperative they have to do so but also the crucible they are under to articulate any such formidable legal arguments, as the law increasingly appears incapable of keeping pace with the impact rapid advancements in technology have....especially those that tear away at society’s moral fabric.

As the backlash from the United States-Israel-led war continues to reverberate from Tehran to Washington, D.C., U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu find themselves struggling to maintain the political hold they have on their respective nations. The fallout from the war poses a crisis to both Trump and Netanyahu as the calendar turns ever closer toward monumental elections this fall that increasingly appear as if they could mark the final chapter of each of their political legacies. Yet, unlike Trump, whose dwindling support in the U.S. ahead of mid-term elections merely signals the loss of his Republican Party’s control of Congress, a disastrous outcome in the 2026 Israeli legislative election scheduled for October 27th could mean the end of Netanyahu’s tenure as Prime Minister of Israel. The momentum Netanyahu’s opposition has gained ahead of elections to determine the 26th Knesset isn’t the only obstacle he faces to stay office, as chaos within his own ruling government continues to undermine the viability of his political future.

The latest episode of existential turmoil within the Netanyahu government that has fortified his opposition with political ammunition emerged from the actions taken by a far-right member of his ruling coalition. Zvi Sukkot, a Member of the Knesset (”MK”) belonging to the Religious Zionist Party led by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, plunged the Netanyahu government into even more disarray after he destroyed a Palestinian monument in the occupied West Bank on August 25th, 2026. Sukkot destroyed the Palestinian Martyrs Memorial erected in the village of Kafr Madama near Nablus to honor members of the al-Aqsa brigade and civilians killed in the First and Second Intifada by taking a sledgehammer to it alongside his aides while being guarded by members of the Israel Defense Forces (”IDF”).

Sukkot justified his actions in a statement posted on his X account, writing, “Every child who sees every day a giant monument that glorifies murderers of Jews will dream of being a terrorist.” The Religious Zionist Party MK laced that unapologetic defense of his act with the looming threat that it was just “a small taste” of what’s to come. He ended his public statement addressing the destruction of the monument with a message bereft of self-awareness, stating, “There is no place for support of terror in the State of Israel!”

IDF officials confirmed they diverted troops from standard operational duties to guard Sukkot and his aides as they destroyed the memorial. Those officials offered a narrative designed to counter the optics of their actions, stating, “Contrary to the coordination, the participants acted deceitfully and manipulatively, without authority and in complete violation of the approved framework, and began demolishing one of the memorials in the village of Madama.” Despite claiming that MK Sukkot broke protocols with his actions, the IDF confirmed that it does regularly demolish memorials they deem as symbols of incitement of terrorism across the West Bank. That clarification conveyed how Sukkot’s actions were less of a departure from that practice but merely were done without conforming to the bureaucracy of attaining the required approvals from the Israeli Civil Administration of the occupied West Bank to carry them out.

Although IDF officials also stated they instructed the troops guarding Sukkot and his aides to stop and remove the group from the village, footage capturing the destruction of the memorial did not show the soldiers intervene. When pressed for any proof that the IDF troops carried out their alleged orders to stop Sukkot from destroying the memorial, a spokesperson for the military stated that the soldiers had not been sent with a photographer to guard the group and thus were unable to provide any footage proving they fulfilled that directive.

Kafr Madama village council head, Rami Nassar, decried Sukkot’s actions in the wake of the destruction of the memorial. Nassar issued a stark warning on how the acceptance of his actions would ultimately motivate more violence against Palestinians in the West Bank village. The Jerusalem-based Israeli nonprofit organization B’Tselem, also known as the Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, has documented at least 18 separate incidences of illegal settler violence against Palestinians in the village since 2020 alone, excluding the actions of Sukkot under his armed IDF guard. Those episodes of violence include settlers stoning villagers, setting fire to Palestinians’ homes, and soldiers firing live rounds at civilians.

Given that history of violence institutionalized and effectively sanctioned by the Israeli government, Nassar spoke to the gravity of what Sukkot’s actions meant to the future of Palestinians in Kafr Madama and across the whole of the occupied West Bank. “When an official Israeli politician acts like this, what can we expect from other radical settlers? It could push them to follow in his footsteps, leading to more raids and causing harm and harassment to residents and their property,” he said.

Albeit for more advantageous motives, opponents of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed Nassar by denouncing the actions of Sukkot. Opposition leaders condemned his attack, seizing upon the opportunity to use it in order to amplify their criticisms of Netanyahu. Former IDF Chief of Staff and current Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot stated that the incident was made possible by Netanyahu’s actions that have undermined Israel’s governance and security protections in the West Bank. According to Eisenkot, those policies have enabled “the anarchist Zvi Sukkot and those like him to do as they wish.”

Together party leader and former prime minister Naftali Bennett joined Leader of the Opposition in the Knesset Yair Lapid, who seized upon the opportunity to attack Netanyahu by condemning Sukkot through the lens that his actions put the lives of Israeli soldiers, civilians, and the Jewish diaspora at risk. Lapid warned that Sukkot’s destruction of the Palestinian memorial further damaged “what is left of Israel’s image in the world.”

The most fervent condemnation of Sukkot came from Democrats party leader and Netanyahu opponent Yair Golan, who stated, “This is a person who should be behind bars and bolts, not in the Knesset of Israel” in a video posted to his account on X. Golan pointed to how the chaos enveloping Sukkot was not an isolated incident but another episode in a long history of extremism, highlighting how the MK joined in a riot storming the Sde Teiman military base in July 2024 after IDF reservists were detained for severe sexual abuse of a Palestinian detainee. Sukkot, alongside dozens of other rioters led by Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Minister of National Security of Israel and leader of the Kahanist Jewish Power party, stormed the Israeli detention camp in the Negev desert to demand the release of the detained IDF reservists suspected of participating in the systematic sexual abuse Palestinian prisoners have been subjected to at the site.

Golan parlayed his criticism of Sukkot into a call to depose the extremist factions within the Netanyahu ruling government in an effort to effectuate a change in the leadership of the Israeli regime. “In the upcoming elections, the Kahanists and messianists must be removed from centers of power, and Israel returned to its track. They want eternal war. We will fight for a secure, democratic, and sane state,” he stated in the video. After its publication, Sukkot threatened to sue Golan if he did not remove the post within half an hour. Likud, the largest party in the Knesset led by Netanyahu, bolstered that threat by petitioning the Israeli Central Elections Committee to punish Golan on the grounds that the statements expressed in the video constituted prohibited electioneering. Shortly after the threat, Golan deleted the post.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin responded to the controversy eliciting a verbal sparring match between members of the Knesset by issuing his latest in a seemingly endless series of half-hearted performative denouncements. Netanyahu’s response was as concerned as it was lengthy, simply stating that public officials should not “take the law into their own hands,” without even referring to Sukkot by name. While Netanyahu warned that Sukkot’s act "prevents the IDF from focusing on its missions against terrorism and incitement," he refused to condemn the attack on the basis of the motives driving it.

Netanyahu’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, did not shy away from addressing Sukkot by name in rushing to the defense of the member of his party. Smotrich characterized the memorial destroyed by Sukkot as a monument celebrating terrorism, adding that Israel should have dismantled it long ago. “What should really concern us is the headlong rush by the leaders of the left-wing opposition to condemn MK Sukkot, rather than the terrorism itself,” said Smotrich, framing his party member as a victim instead of the perpetrator of an attack. Fellow Religious Zionist Party member Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu echoed the support offered to Sukkot by Smotrich. In a show of solidarity with his party member, Eliyahu backed Sukkot, stating “destroying a memorial for terrorists is welcome.”

The solidarity exemplified by members of the Religious Zionist Party in support of MK Zvi Sukkot comes in stark juxtaposition to the reactions expressed by members of the Knesset as a whole. Those fractured lines across the Israeli legislature highlight the precarious position Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finds himself in, as he has become utterly dependent on courting extremist factions like the Religious Zionist Party in order to keep a ruling coalition that can preserve his tenure in office. That growing dependence in turn serves to stoke the fervor of their radical actions as they have become emboldened by the understanding of how indispensable they are to the political survival of the prime minister. Ahead of a pivotal election in October, that dynamic means that Netanyahu has put himself in a position where he can only hold on to his office by fanning the flames of Zionist extremism to run more rampantly. What remains to be seen is whether those actions will ultimately strengthen his grasp on power or the opposition that seeks to depose him.

An August, 2026 Documented NY investigation exposes a Queens-based nonprofit organization, “La Jornada,” for essentially defrauding pro se (unrepresented) asylum seekers. The article speaks to a plethora of chinks in the supposed armor of NYC’s ‘sanctuary city’ policies and its strategy to combat the humanitarian and legal crises created by the US regime’s imperialist actions abroad.

Unfortunately for working class immigrants who recently crossed the Southern Border, the pattern of incompetence, malpractice, and negligence is more far-reaching than Documented reports here. Indeed, the Trump regime’s attack on and complete dismantling of the immigration system has been catalyzed, not impeded, by the mismanagement and corruption surrounding the policies put into place by local officials in NYC.

Any legal program assisting newly-arrived immigrants within the five boroughs from 2022-2026 will have undoubtedly come across hundreds of asylum, work authorization, and other family-based applications that were completed with the help of two organizations: La Jornada in Queens, or the Asylum Application Help Center (AAHC) in the Red Cross Building in Manhattan. The former is a 501c(3) that started as a COVID-era food pantry and now advertises professional legal services. The latter was the Adams Administration’s public response to thousands of asylum seekers being bussed north by Republican leaders at the Southern Border.

To the general public, both entities were performing as the well-oiled machines they advertised themselves to be. For those on the ground, speaking with immigrants about their experiences on a daily basis—and for asylum-seekers themselves—the story was much different. Asylum applications were being filed by people who either claimed to be attorneys, or who did not sufficiently explain they were not so. Applicants were being denied access to important receipts and copies of documents that they needed in order to receive Social Security and other public benefits. Applications were being submitted only to USCIS instead of the Immigration Court (EOIR) when the applicant was in Removal Proceedings.

Forcibly displaced people in critical need of legal, physical, and psychological aid were being mis-educated and misinformed about the complexities of the federal immigration system at every turn. The consequences are clear cut: Innocent people following every step of the legal process to the letter are ordered removed from the country, laid bare for the newly-implemented ravages of the Trump regime, which encounters little resistance in pursuing its victims.

These errors were being committed not exclusively by the sketchy attorneys and notarios lining Roosevelt Avenue in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens. On the contrary: The city’s AAHC was—and La Jornada continues to be—staffed by community advocates and legal professionals. This essay is not meant to be construed as a condemnation of those individuals who simply want to help immigrants. Nor will it give the benefit of the doubt to those Amerikans who charged desperate, scared people exorbitant fees for subpar legal services.

Most importantly, these concrete issues are all auxiliary to the ever-increasing restrictions denying working class people from the Global South access to humanitarian benefits, and indeed, due process itself. As such, they deserve nothing less than complete accountability and clarity in review of the past few years.

Why did clearly preventable errors, such as those mentioned above, occur on a mass scale in NYC, supposedly one of the ‘democratic’ havens of the world? Who are the principal actors in this scheme of organizational incompetence? And what steps have since been taken to correct these glaring infrastructural issues, if any?

The above-cited Documented article investigating malpractice at La Jornada sheds light on a contradiction that has become all too clear in the past few years: Community-based organizations claiming to support vulnerable immigrant populations have an obligation to acknowledge that simply offering legal services limited to ‘application assistance’ is a wildly insufficient scope of work. A larger, more collaborative effort to combat the material deficiencies which disproportionately affect specific immigrant populations is essential.

There are a number of reasons why a better understanding of the specific populations being served at a given time is a fundamental aspect of immigration advocacy, and of fighting for those oppressed by the US empire in general. As I have noted in Part II of this series, almost a quarter of recent ICE abductions in NYC have been carried out on recently-arrived Ecuadorians, most of whom are mixed-race, Afro-Latino or indigenous Quechua/Kichwa. Two years before this statistic came to light, CBS reported in 2023 that the US-Mexico border was witnessing “a 312% spike” in arrivals from Ecuador. Unmentioned in the article is the fact that the US government’s recent destabilization of Ecuador has forced much of the country’s already exploited mestizo/indigenous population north to the US-Mexico border.

Immigrant advocacy groups were woefully unprepared for the Ecuadorian indigenous diaspora in 2023. Still today, there is little to no access to interpretation in their indigenous languages, and the basis of their claims for political asylum is misunderstood to a shameful degree. The vast majority of pro se asylum applications filed by La Jornada and the AAHC for Ecuadorians tend to appear thusly:

Question 1.A. on Form I-589: Have you, your family, or close friends or colleagues ever experienced harm or mistreatment or threats in the past by anyone? If “Yes,” explain in detail: 1. What happened; 2. When the harm or mistreatment or threats occurred; 3. Who caused the harm or mistreatment or threats; and 4. Why you believe the harm or mistreatment or threats occurred.

Response (as prepared by La Jornada/AAHC): “Yes. I was robbed and threatened by gang members. They demanded that I give them $100 a month. They said they would kill me and my family if I didn’t. I am scared to return to Ecuador because the gangs have lots of power with the government and the police.”

Self-proclaimed ‘legal professionals’ have charged unsuspecting people hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars—including at La Jornada, as Documented’s investigation shows—to submit applications with responses indistinguishable from the example given above. This is not a valid response. Moreover, the vast majority of applications containing such insufficiencies were pretermitted (denied before reaching a decision on the merits) by immigration judges in the last year, thanks to two new rulings by the recently gutted and reconstructed Board of Immigration Appeals.

We must recognize that the Trump regime was more than prepared to bar an entire particular social group (those persecuted by gangs or organized armed groups) from qualifying for humanitarian benefits for which they very likely qualified. In doing so, it capitalized spectacularly upon the immigrant advocate community’s lack of understanding of and appreciation for the unique experience of indigenous Ecuadorians and their struggle for self-determination.

A more nuanced interpretation of an Ecuadorian immigrant’s claim to asylum would allude to a variety of supplementary factors which ultimately relate to their experience of political persecution: Their identity as a Quechua/Kichwa person, the access they had to hospitals, paved roads, educational opportunities, and protection/assistance from local authorities; if they were a single mother, or if their child was of age to be recruited by local gangs. These aspects of the human experience are, after all, political in essence.

Of course, an applicant might not proactively volunteer this information—they may not think of themselves as indigenous or persecuted on the basis of the socioeconomic position they held in their home country. The dynamic, flexible advocate, however, will know enough about the cultural and geopolitical complexities surrounding Ecuadorian asylum seekers. They will possess the subtle interviewing and social skills, honed by thousands of hours of experience, to steer the applicant towards a line of questioning resulting in them providing these answers in an authentic, truthful fashion.

For example: “Our program has met with many other Ecuadorians from towns like Machala, Guamote, El Pan, Alausi, Ibarra, etc. who are of Quechua descent. That is, their parents and/or grandparents grew up speaking the indigenous language. Is this the case for you and your family as well? Would you say that many Quechua people don’t receive equal help or protection from the government and police, as compared to the white Ecuadorians in Quito and Guayaquil?” Nine times out of ten, the answer to both questions is an enthusiastic, “Sí.”

The oblivious reader may assume this technique amounts to ‘leading’ the applicant to giving a dishonest answer. The truth, per usual, is far more complicated: The socioeconomic factors culminating in someone’s severe persecution often result in an inability to clearly express the multilayered and interacting forms this persecution has taken throughout their own life. Why should severely traumatized people be expected to remember exact dates from more than a decade ago, when they have been trying to forget what happened to them ever since? Why should they be expected to maintain a linear memory after enduring unimaginable acts of violence? Why should they be able to express the specific reasons for which they have been treated as subhuman by those who hold power in their home country?

The burden, we must accept, rests upon the communities and organizations advocating for immigrants to understand how these complexities—the varying material conditions facing asylum seekers in their respective countries—are expressed in a format acceptable to US immigration authorities. Most advocacy groups in NYC remained blind to these realities on an organizational level during the most critical moments of the Trump regime’s dismantling of the immigration system. It is now legally possible for the federal government to close the doors on a well-founded fear of persecution in one’s home country, and the widespread incompetence of NYC’s community-based organizations serving immigrants has only sped up this systematic injustice.

In July of 2025, then-Mayor Eric Adams announced the AAHC would be closing. He boasted about the “more than 237,000” immigrants that had been received by the city since 2022, and the “over 111,000 applications for work authorization, temporary protected status, and asylum” that the center completed for recently-arrived New Yorkers. With the benefit of hindsight, we should ask ourselves: What do these figures actually mean?

Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a temporary parole program only available to certain countries designated by the State Department, was terminated for Syria and Haiti, and soon it will be terminated for Venezuela. If their publicly-reported numbers are accurate, the termination of TPS makes up for more than 10% of the AAHC’s applications alone (They reported assisting about 11,500 Venezuelans and between 500-800 Haitians with TPS).

Despite the ‘efforts’ of local officials with Adams at the helm, Document reported in June of 2024 that the number of unrepresented immigrants in NYC courtrooms was reaching an 18-year high. Unlike most other proceedings that take place in US courts, immigrants in Removal Proceedings are not afforded public defenders. Immigration nonprofits and advocacy organizations were already short-staffed on attorneys before the 2023 Southern Border surge. In effect, shoddily prepared applications for asylum seekers were being introduced into the system for the Trump regime to later utilize as evidence of the need to pretermit or deny what would otherwise be a valid claim for relief.

Increasingly in 2025, this resulted in the application being terminated, deportation being ordered and armed agents of the state camping outside, abducting men, women, and children as they left the courtroom, altogether unsure of what had just taken place. This process is funded entirely by taxpayer dollars. Documented reported in April of 2026 that ICE arrests have increased approximately 212% during the current Trump regime. Many of the victims, my colleagues and I know from experience, are among the most vulnerable immigrant populations—those indigenous men, women, and children who are misled and misinformed (intentionally or otherwise) by those who claim to be acting exclusively out of solidarity.

Around ten thousand asylum seekers have been abducted by ICE in NYC since 2025. Many of them, as a matter of probability, were among those who sought refuge in the legal expertise of such city-funded organizations as La Jornada and the AAHC. These figures are concrete—what is much harder to calculate is the number of asylum seekers whose insufficient applications, prepared for them by such organizations as the two in question, were pretermitted or denied, closing the door on any opportunity for freedom and self-determination in the country they had risked so much to reach.

Thanks to Brandon Marrow’s research initiative Bklg.org, we know that the Trump regime has introduced more than seven thousand motions to pretermit in the last year in NYC alone (see figure below). But even further obscured is the number of people who languish in ICE prisons, homeless shelters, or crammed into one-bedroom apartments, orders of removal hanging over their heads, unable to apply for public benefits—despite tirelessly contributing to the bloated gig economy upon which the more privileged classes of Amerikan society depend. This mass suffering, which continues today, was counted as a success under the eyes of the Adams administration. We cannot divorce this reality from the lack of preparedness and open-mindedness displayed by local and state-level officials as well as immigrant advocacy organizations.

Perhaps the incident most indicative of the city’s response to the so-called ‘migrant crisis’ is the DocGo scandal. It is this singular scheme that best provokes the question of whether or not there is a possibility that the organizational failures in responding to the needs of recently arrived New Yorkers were, on some level, intentional.

In May of 2023, the Adams administration awarded a $432 million no-bid contract to DocGo. Previously contracted to provide on-site and mobile COVID testing units under an LLC registered as “Rapid Reliable Testing,” the original contract in 2022 was awarded for about $15 million, labeled an ‘emergency pandemic initiative.’ Less than a year later, the contract value had increased by almost three thousand percent.

What kinds of services was the Adams administration paying almost half a billion dollars for? In addition to providing medical screenings and security staff for city-funded homeless shelters, DocGo was supposedly contracted to provide food, housing, and case management for asylum seekers. For those wondering why a relatively new corporation specializing in mobile COVID testing units was singlehandedly facilitating the largest influx of recently arrived immigrants in the country—the inquiry is well-founded.

In September of 2023 (four months after the DocGo contract started) then-Mayor Adams, by executive order, overrode a Comptroller Report submitted by Brad Lander denying DocGo’s contract proposal, citing a lack of experience as a legal and social services provider. The report revealed that since the contract commenced in May of 2023, the city had already received “numerous reports of staff mistreating or misleading asylum seekers, failing to properly respond to reported assault incidents, and inadequate service provision further exacerbate these concerns.” It also found that “two security subcontractors engaged by DocGo hired security guards without proper authorization, in potential violation of law, raising serious concerns about DocGo’s process for vetting and selecting subcontractors.”

The results are all too predictable: recently arrived New Yorkers are abused, threatened, extorted, and altogether dehumanized and debased by a system publicly proclaiming to be defending and sheltering them. Multiple District Attorney reports and investigations by local outlets have shed light on a few of many stories rising to the surface in the wake of this display of incompetence and corruption.

A later Comptroller report released almost a year later in August of 2024 includes the following indictment from Lander: “Thousands of asylum seekers travelled thousands of miles to seek safety and support as they start their new lives and instead were met with infestation, inedible food, and inadequate services. Our audit unearthed what we already suspected—that DocGo never should have gotten into the business of housing asylum seekers.”

A poignant statement, indeed. But what are the material results of this rhetorical outrage? The Attorney General’s Office has not prosecuted or fined a single individual for the DocGo debacle. In April 2024, the Adams administration simply stated it would not renew their $432 million emergency contract, choosing to transition migrant care operations to a new vendor. Not unimportant is the fact that DocGo went on to settle a separate, $12.5 million securities fraud class action lawsuit stemming from the financial fallout of the migrant crisis scandal. This payout went exclusively to the company’s shareholders—some of whom were related to the guilty DocGo executives themselves.

Anyone inclined to believe the DocGo fiasco was an isolated incident need only refer to such recent events as top Adams aide Frank Carone’s June 2026 arrest regarding accepting bribes to push through a multi-million dollar contract for a migrant shelter on 40th Ave in Long Island City, Queens. For those still under the illusion that NYC’s ‘democratic’ infrastructure does not first and foremost operate to profit off human beings, rather than provide the critical human and social services to working class people—these relatively petty bribery charges point to a prioritization of the former within the upper echelons of the city’s bureaucratic framework.

Carone, dubbed a “Brooklyn Power Broker” by The City Reporter, comfortably retains his freedom and continues to practice law, as he “put up a home in Boca Raton as collateral,” and his legal team–many of which are his colleagues–obtained a May 2027 trial date. Indeed, as in many regions of the US dubbed less ‘progressive’ than NYC, the end result is the same: those most exploited and oppressed immigrant populations from the Global South continue to fight for their lives and their dignity; all the while, attorneys, corporate executives, lobbyists, and those occupying various political offices continue to squeeze exorbitant profits from the pain and suffering of forcibly displaced people, facing at most a slap on the wrist if they happen to be caught operating outside the letter of the law.

To this day, Carone is the only official to be indicted regarding the city’s failure to adequately and humanely address the needs of its asylum seeking population—though his career and liberty remain intact. The same cannot be said for those victims of the ruthless pursuit of profit displayed by NYC’s organizational infrastructure; it is a system which invites at the very least indifference—if not collusion—with Amerikan fascism.

We now turn to a much broader issue with which many local and state officials around the country are grappling: collusion with the fascist Trump regime. At the state level, Kathy Hochul still refuses to fully endorse the NY legislature’s “New York for All Act,” which would officially ban local law enforcement departments from entering into 287(g) programs with the federal government (a program that deputizes police officers as immigration enforcement officers, transitioning them towards hunting down asylum seekers).

We must ask ourselves: what is the true essence of Hochul’s stance? What does it mean for a governor to stand rhetorically against such collusion when reports of asylum seekers in Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties are still being transferred directly to ICE custody after traffic stops (I wrote about such a case in Part IV of this series)? Why are state officials still hung up on the language of ‘administrative vs. judicial warrants,’ when there is almost daily video evidence pouring in from around the country that federal authorities do not feel any need whatsoever to abide by these warrants? Why is the NYPD seen to be actively collaborating with DHS to protect federal agents from protestors while operating in violation of people’s constitutional rights?

Local and state officials are certainly aware of the value of an anti-287(g) political stance. The truth of the matter is that even without the implementation of these programs in and around sanctuary cities, much of the damage has already been done. As of the writing of this essay on August 19, Nassau County’s police department has yet to terminate their 287(g) program, despite being less than a week from the August 25 deadline imposed by Albany. The convoluted network of private practices, nonprofits, and local/state elected officials has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that any effort of concrete, long-lasting advocacy as it currently exists is rendered moot by our collective inability to organize around the most vulnerable and oppressed immigrant populations entering the Southern Border.

Thus, we can see that the transition from the Adams to the Mamdani administration has largely been rhetorical in effect. Indeed, Mamdani’s team has allocated millions more to advocacy organizations, but the local administration’s relationship with Albany has remained largely unchanged. The average college-educated Mamdani voter appears to be placated by the far more progressive verbiage being disseminated by local officials.

It is within this context that Mayor Mamdani can triumphantly announce the reinstitution of NYC’s ‘sanctuary city’ policies, prohibiting ICE operations from taking place in city schools, hospitals, and shelters—despite the fact that illegal abductions continue to take place in all three areas today. Independent efforts such as those of the Immigrant Defense Project highlight the systemic participation of the NYPD with federal authorities, despite the feigned indignation so often exhibited by New York’s politico-economic elites. In other words, there’s a lot of tacit support and ‘solidarity’ being declared and almost nothing of material significance being put into practice.

In reality, local cops continue to brutally repress anti-ICE and pro-Palestine demonstrators—a skill that has been refined by Zionist heiress Jessica Tisch, whom the Mamdani administration has conveniently tapped to return as NYPD Commissioner. Mamdani himself has backtracked on his views regarding defunding Tisch’s department, which has a budget larger than most country’s militaries, and working to combat the police state—a position he took just six years ago during his bid for State Assemblyman.

These actions are echoed by other purportedly ‘leftist’ candidates around the country, most recently Abdul El-Sayed, who is on record claiming to support defunding the police in the wake of the BLM movement. Since winning their respective races, both men have decidedly wavered and leaned further towards the Democratic establishment on many of the popular demands that propelled them to victory. This is not a new tendency by any means.

Contrast these vacillating positions with actual revolutionaries such as Kshama Sawant, who have openly platformed such actions as calling for a general strike should they be elected: immediately mobilizing their grassroots voter base to demand the implementation of the popular Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction movement—which gained ground among such constituents as Mamdani’s—without regard for the negative impact it will have on her political career. Such moral integrity, unfortunately, is wanting when it comes to most other political leaders on both sides of the aisle.

Independent journalists such as Black Agenda Report’s Margaret Kimberly can also be seen taking the correct position:

“ICE must be abolished. The federal immigration enforcement agency must be torn up and reconfigured anew. Minnesotans have reached that conclusion and so have millions of other people around the country.”

For abolition to be the priority would necessarily involve a wide-scale reckoning with the fact that Democrats in power benefit enormously from the perpetuation and facilitation of the mass denial of due process rights of working-class people of the Global South. Without acknowledging such a fact, we are left with Obama-era “bothesideism,” effectually paying lip service to the understandably outraged working-class population within the Amerikan empire. NYC can remain, on paper, a ‘sanctuary city’ while protestors are beaten and gassed by police officers protecting the federal agents openly engaged in committing terrorism against immigrant New Yorkers.

We have aimed to demonstrate that local and state-level responses to the attacks of the Trump regime on the immigration system reveal the following:

1. It is not in city and state officials’ best interest to address the needs of the recently arrived migrant population. On the contrary, the mass influx of vulnerable working class migrants from the Global South has provided new streams of revenue for corporate executives and the very elected officials claiming to be acting out of their constituents’ interests.

2. While it may be in most individual advocates’ best interest to address these needs, the city’s infrastructure serves to divide communities that should otherwise be united in a shared struggle for self-determination. This includes the homeless ‘native’ New Yorker population threatened by and competing with newly arrived asylum seekers for shelter space and social services. In the financial nucleus of the Amerikan empire, we must acknowledge the fact that there are more than enough financial resources to solve these issues. It is therefore primarily a problem of the specific organization of this infrastructure.

3. In the aggregate, the above-mentioned realities show that the current framework of liberal capitalism (that is, the development of society for the purpose of—and an overwhelming emphasis on—the accumulation of capital rather than the betterment of society at a collective level) is incompatible with the actual needs of working class people. This includes those who flee their home countries to try to create a better life in the US. This principle contradiction created and sustained by such a system is exacerbated to such a miserable degree within cities like NYC (the urban metropolises of the Amerikan empire).

Any individual or organization hoping to provide some sort of relief to those communities we claim to serve must have a more extensive understanding of the factors that comprise the political, economic, and social context laid out above. For it is due to these factors that the Trump regime has been able to rely upon the complacency, disorganization, and incompetence (sometimes to the point of corruption) of New York’s advocates and elected officials to fill their prison beds and deportation planes with working class asylum seekers.

Although President Donald J. Trump declared his longstanding affinity for the Jewish people and State of Israel far before he entered into the political arena, his entrenchment with Zionism has become the defining feature of his second term in the Oval Office. That position has also become the focal point for criticism of the second Trump administration, as critics — many of whom were once his most loyal supporters — have come to question whether the president is intent on putting America or Israel first. That doubt has raised questions that transcend far beyond political concerns into deeper, more philosophical and spiritual realms. One glaring red flag that perfectly distills those questions was observed on the date of Trump’s second inauguration, when he elected not to place his hand upon the Bible when he was sworn in as president. According to an interview with Israeli media, Trump’s former mistress turned ex-wife revealed that decision may have been made because the president keeps another holy book closer to his heart.

Marla Maples, Trump’s second wife, told Israeli Channel 12 news that the president keeps an Aramaic copy of the Book of Pinchas under his clothing close to his heart for “healing and protection.” The portion of the Book of Numbers (specifically, Numbers 25:10-30:1) is distributed among Kabbalistic sects in the Aramaic text Maples referred to Trump’s copy being as an apotropaic talisman. Centered on the biblical figure Pinchas, the son of Eleazar and grandson of the High Priest Aaron, the book is a highly revered section from the Zohar, the foundational text of the preeminent branch of Jewish mysticism known as Kabbalah.

In her interview with Channel 12, Maples described her own deep affinity for Judaism, its mystical elements such as Kabbalah, and the State of Israel, despite maintaining the outward appearance of a Christian identity. The experiences and practices that Maples detailed from her own life drew stark parallels with that of Trump and his family’s, including maintaining a kosher diet, reciting the Shema as a declaration of the Jewish faith, visiting the graves of exalted Jewish religious figures, observing the Sabbath, and frequently visiting Israel.

When recounting the ties to Judaism she has maintained for decades, Maples made note of visiting the city of Safed in northern Israel. In addition to being one of Judaism’s Four Holy Cities — alongside Jerusalem, Hebron, and Tiberias — Safed is the historical center of Kabbalah. Its status as the epicenter of Kabbalah arose during the 16th century, when it became home to central figures of the branch of Jewish mysticism like Moses Cordovero and, most notably, Isaac Luria, the father of its contemporary practice, which has become known as Lurianic Kabbalah. Luria’s influence on Kabbalah was so profound that he became known as “Arizal,” which in Hebrew translates to “Lion of God,” based on the Hebrew words “El” (meaning God) and “Ari” (meaning lion). Following his death in 1572, Luria was buried in the Safed Old Jewish Cemetery on the lower hillside of the city. His grave has since become a major pilgrimage site for Kabbalists.

Trump’s ex-wife is not the only figure in his life who maintains reverence for Kabbalah. Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, who has held various high-ranking advisory roles in each of his presidential administrations, is a member of the Haredi sect of Judaism known as Chabad-Lubavitch. Chabad arose as a Hasidic dynasty in 1775 by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi in Liozno, then part of the Russian Empire. The sect is inherently Kabbalistic, taking its name from an acronym representing the first three Sephirot of the Tree of Life: Chokmah, Binah, and Da’at. Ivanka Trump, the president’s oldest daughter, converted to Judaism in order to marry Kushner and regularly attends Chabad-run congregations as a practicing Jew. She has also regularly been seen adorned with a red string bracelet on her wrist, another popular apotropaic talisman worn by Kabbalists.

Maples detailed how Ivanka Trump’s conversion was a monumental force in further immersing the president into world Jewry, which she expressed has helped shape her ex-husband’s spiritual and consequently political identity. The influence of that immersion into Judaism has been echoed by fervent ultra-Zionist supporters of Trump, such as political commentator Mark Levin, who has referred to Trump as the U.S. “first Jewish president” on multiple occasions. Trump himself reinforced that image by making his undying commitment to Israel and the Jewish people explicit, wasting no opportunity to reiterate it during his second term as president.

That commitment has come to undermine Trump’s second term, which continues to be mired by its war with Iran, which senior officials in his administration have consistently justified as necessary to defending Israel and maintaining the U.S. allegiance with the Jewish state. Prioritizing that relationship has led to upheaval among Trump’s supporters, who have come to mock his presidency as being Israel First instead of following through on the America First platform it built itself upon. That growing disdain has become amplified by the continued presence of Kushner within his administration, whose overt identity as a member of Chabad and an unflinching ally of Israel has raised further questions behind the motives driving the work in his role as an informal special envoy in deliberations between the U.S. and Iran.

Within the Chabad-Lubavitch, many of its followers have come to believe that its seventh Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson was the Moschiach — Judaism’s long-awaited Messiah. On October 7th, 2024, Trump visited Schneerson's grave in Queens, New York to pay his respects alongside ultra-Zionist conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro to mark the first anniversary of Hamas' October 7th, 2023 attack on Israel. That belief shaping sects of modern Kabbalistic thought raises questions on how their belief that the Messianic Age has arisen shapes their political aims and how those motives influence the Trump administration through advisors ingrained in Chabad like Kushner. As the second Trump administration has made the U.S. impossible to separate from Israel, it appears the spiritual influence Judaism and its mystical elements like Kabbalah have had on the president are equally impossible to separate from the forces shaping his leadership.

On the seventh anniversary of the supposed “death” of nefarious pedophilic sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, one of the biggest critics of the Trump administration’s Epstein Files cover-up finds themselves embroiled in a child sex abuse controversy of their own. Tyler Boebert, the 21-year-old son of Colorado congressional representative Lauren Boebert, has been arrested on multiple felony charges of sexual exploitation of a child. Boebert’s arrest is the latest chapter of a criminal history stretching back to 2024 that has included other multiple felonies and charges related to child abuse. His latest arrest comes as his mother is vying for re-election to Congress following a term in which she has fractured her relationship with U.S. President Donald J. Trump over his administration’s handling of the Epstein Files. Amid that political fallout, her son’s mounting legal troubles further complicate her bid to retain her seat in the House of Representatives.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office (”GCSO”) confirmed the charges against Boebert in an August 10th, 2026 news release issued one day after his arrest. Boebert was released on the same day he was arrested after posting a $10,000 surety bond. He now faces charges for sexual exploitation of a child — induce/entice, sexual exploitation of a child — possession with intent, sexual exploitation of a child — video, and two separate counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in relation to an investigation by the GCSO concerning an incident that occurred on New Year’s Day 2024. All five charges filed against Boebert are felonies.

Boebert’s next court appearance on those charges is scheduled for August 19th, 2026. That appearance comes just 16 days before his September 4th, 2026 sentencing hearing in Weld County on a misdemeanor charge of child abuse he was cited for in July 2025 after allowing his two-year-old son to wander out of his mother’s Windsor, Colorado home without supervision. Boebert is also set to appear in Garfield County the following week on September 10th for another sentencing hearing relating to a February 2024 arrest on 22 charges relating to his role in a series of break-ins and thefts in Rifle, Colorado. His mother is expected to testify on his behalf in both of those sentencing hearings.

Boebert was arrested in 2024 for breaking into cars to steal wallets and credit cards as part of an organized theft ring. He was charged with five felonies: four counts of criminal possession of identification documents and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony, along with misdemeanor and petty charges including four counts of first-degree criminal trespass of an automobile with intent to commit a crime, four counts of identity theft — possession with intent to use, four counts of criminal possession of a financial device, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and three counts of theft of less than $300. As part of a plea agreement, Boebert pleaded guilty to one charge of attempted identity theft, a Class 5 felony. The other 21 charges he faced were dismissed under the plea agreement. Boebert received a two-year deferred judgment rather than an immediate felony conviction and was ordered to complete 80 hours of community service within a year as well as pay court costs.

Shortly after his February 2024 arrest, court records revealed that a juvenile questioned in connection with the string of thefts Boebert was connected to alleged that he recorded and distributed sex tapes he took with one of his female accomplices, who was a minor at the time. That testimony appears central to the child sex exploitation charges brought against Boebert as his arrest affidavit accuses him of having sex with a 17-year-old girl when he was 18. An investigation that began in March 2024 uncovered sex videos shared publicly on an anonymous Instagram account. The account hosted videos of people having sex with minors, along with photos of minor girls nude and in various states of undress. Authorities identified Boebert as one of the men having sex with minors in the videos.

Boebert’s latest arrest is the second run-in he has had with the law this year. In February, he was cited on child abuse charges after allowing his son to walk out of his mother’s home without noticing. A woman discovered the child nearby without injury and contacted authorities. Boebert was subsequently cited for child abuse without injury — a misdemeanor. That marked the second time in less than a year that Boebert was cited on child abuse charges for allowing his son to wander out of his mother’s home without supervision.

Despite not being cited for child abuse until 2025, concerns about Boebert’s parenting had already arisen after he called police on his father, Jayson, in January 2024. According to Boebert, his father began attacking him while carrying a rifle after he discovered his son had placed his grandson in a laundry basket to sleep. Jayson Boebert was arrested later in the day on six charges, including misdemeanor assault, disorderly conduct, and prohibited use of a firearm in relation to the altercation with his son and an incident of domestic violence that occurred between him and his ex-wife, Lauren, at a restaurant in Silt, Colorado just days before when an argument broke out between the two after he pleaded for her to take him back.

The dysfunction that has mired the Boebert family for years has reared its ugly head yet again following Tyler’s arrest on multiple child sexual exploitation felonies. Given the gravity of those charges, his latest arrest poses a political maelstrom for his mother, who has prided herself as someone fighting against those who have protected child sex abusers. She now finds herself facing a public image antithetical to that as she grapples with defending her son against accusations of a similar nature during a re-election bid in which her family has provided her opponents with even more political fodder in their attempt to unseat her from Congress.

When you look at the region today, the United States does not want a full-scale regional war. However, it also cannot afford to completely back down. Washington continues to support military pressure on Iran because a sudden retreat would undermine American deterrence, weaken its credibility among allies and adversaries alike, and erode the global perception of U.S. hegemony.

Israel, meanwhile, has pushed for even more aggressive action, creating growing tensions over how far the conflict should go.
The reality is that Israel cannot afford to keep taking endless losses, because running a nonstop military campaign with no real political achievements will eventually exhaust and destabilize any state

The balance of power between the two countries is not as simple as military strength alone.
The United States is clearly the stronger country, with far greater economic resources and military capabilities.
However, Israeli leaders have often been highly effective at navigating the political system in Washington, allowing them to build significant influence over American decision-making.

Benjamin Netanyahu has been in power for a very long time, and he understands how the American government works better than almost anyone.
In the United States, politics runs on money, lobbies, and deals made behind closed doors in Congress.
Ever since the 1960s, Israel has built a massive network of support inside Washington.
This does not mean Israel completely owns America, but it does mean Israeli leaders know exactly which politicians to talk to, which donors to use, and how to push the U.S. government to do what they want.

This influence works best when Israel’s goals match what the American President personally wants.
But there is a limit.
If a U.S. President ever feels that Israel is hurting his own political career or messing up America’s bigger plans, he has the power to tell Israel to stop, and Israel would have no choice but to listen.
The main reason America rarely puts its foot down is because the pro-Israel lobby has spent decades building power in Washington.

Israel is experiencing a golden era of influence, but its recent moves have not produced the results it expected.
The war on Lebanon in 2024 did not bring a clear victory, while the 2026 war on Iran caused massive destruction but failed to achieve its intended objectives. On the contrary, Iran emerged with a stronger regional position, greater influence, and increased leverage over key strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz, giving it the ability to impact global energy markets and the world economy.
As a result, many governments and populations around the world are increasingly blaming Israel’s actions for escalating tensions and threatening the stability of critical global trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.

The way Israel keeps its hold on U.S. politics is through a mix of favors and political pressure, making it very risky for American politicians to speak out against Israeli decisions.
Even so, people inside the U.S. government are getting frustrated.
A leader with a big ego, like Donald Trump, hates feeling like a smaller country is bossing him around.
On top of that, when an American leader builds his entire image around being tough on Iran, he gets trapped into a corner where he cannot back down without looking weak.
Meanwhile, Iran is playing the exact same game, making unpredictable moves to counter American pressure.

This conflict has also disrupted major economic and diplomatic plans in the Middle East.
Before the recent escalations, countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Qatar were moving toward closer business and security partnerships with Israel, heavily pushed by figures like Jared Kushner.
However, the events of October 7 and the war that followed dramatically changed the regional and global environment.
Israel’s actions during the conflict, along with statements by some Israeli officials regarding territorial ambitions and visions of a “Greater Israel,” have increased concerns across the region and contributed to a major shift in public and political attitudes.
As a result, previous normalization and partnership efforts have been slowed or put on hold, forcing Washington to reconsider whether its regional strategy is still achievable.
At the same time, more Americans and government officials are arguing that the United States must prioritize its own interests and avoid being pulled into endless foreign conflicts.

Inside the U.S. national security system, major disagreements are emerging over how Washington should handle Israel and the wider regional conflict. Some officials and policymakers have grown increasingly concerned about Netanyahu’s government, the direction of the war, and the consequences for broader American interests.
Major American media figures and influential commentators have openly criticized these policies, showing that even within conservative circles in the United States there is growing division over the approach toward Israel and the wider conflict.
After the long, painful wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many people in Washington no longer believe that constant military action works.
That is why you see political figures like Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance taking different approaches, it is a calculated way for political leaders to appeal to different groups of voters without losing control.

If you look back at history, America is the strongest empire the world has ever seen, but taking endless risks for a smaller ally is a dangerous strategy.
History shows that ancient superpowers, like the Roman Empire, would eventually put their foot down and crush any regional partner that caused too much trouble for the empire as a whole.
If America wants to remain the top global power, its leaders have to put American interests first instead of constantly backing another country’s moves.
Washington gave Israel a chance to handle the region on its own, but since that failed, smart decision-makers in the U.S. government are starting to think it is time to cut their losses before things get worse.

You can already see signs that both the United States and Israel are facing growing pressure and are looking for ways to manage the situation behind the scenes.
Washington’s priority is to avoid being dragged into a wider war, but it also cannot afford to appear weak or defeated.
The United States wants to preserve its image as the dominant global power and maintain its credibility and deterrence in the region.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s political position has become increasingly difficult, forcing his government to balance domestic pressure with the risks of further escalation.

Netanyahu is dealing with major political trouble at home and is looking for ways to protect himself if new elections happen.
On the ground, Israel is quietly trying to limit the intensity of the fighting.
Operations in Lebanon have shifted into smaller-scale actions, while direct confrontations with Iran have slowed down.
At the same time, Israeli forces in southern Lebanon continue to face attacks from the resistance, but many of these incidents are kept away from public attention to avoid highlighting vulnerabilities or creating pressure for a wider escalation.
Israel keeps quiet about these hits because it does not want the public to see its weakness or get pulled into a bigger war it cannot win.
At the same time, the resistance is keeping quiet so they can keep chipping away at Israeli forces without starting a massive new conflict.

In the end, even though Israel has been highly effective at influencing U.S. politics, the United States remains the far stronger power and will ultimately prioritize its own strategic interests.
History shows that great powers place their national interests above any individual alliance when they believe a partnership has become too costly or threatens their broader objectives.
The United States could lose its alliance with Israel and still remain a global power, but Israel’s strategic position is far more dependent on continued American military, political, and diplomatic support.

This is why Israeli leaders have repeatedly emphasized the need to develop greater independence in areas such as defense production, while pro-Israel political networks in the United States continue to push for maintaining strong American support. Their concern is that if Washington begins prioritizing its own interests over Israel’s regional objectives, Israel’s ability to sustain its current position and policies in the region would be significantly weakened.

Ultimately, the choice facing the United States is whether it continues to bear the costs of policies that primarily serve another country’s objectives, or whether it puts American interests first.
A great power maintains its strength by protecting its own security, economy, and global position, not by allowing any ally to influence the direction of its foreign policy.

These heads of men, these collections of ears, these burned houses, these Gothic invasions, this steaming blood, these cities that evaporate at the edge of a sword, are not to be so easily disposed of. They prove that colonization, I repeat, dehumanizes even the most civilized man; that colonial activity, colonial enterprise, colonial conquest, which is based on contempt for the native and justified by that contempt, inevitably tends to change him who undertakes it; that the colonizer, who in order to ease his conscience gets into the habit of seeing the other man as an animal, accustoms himself to treating him like an animal, and tends objectively to transform himself into an animal.

S——. Born in 1998 in Arafat, a village on the outskirts of the capital city of Nouakchott, Mauritania. A member of the Haratin ethnic group—whose maternal side of the family (of Arab ancestry) enslaved the paternal side (of indigenous West African ancestry—likely Wolof, Soninke, Pulaar, or Bambara). He, his father, and his grandfather were enslaved and lived together on the family’s farm.

He was periodically able to sneak away from the family’s property and head downhill into the center of the city, which sat two miles away. He had attended local marches and rallies for the “Initiative pour la Resurgence du le Mouvement Abolitioniste” (Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement, or IRA)—an political and social movement that opposes the racism present in the Mauritanian government, as well as the practice and institutionalization of slavery throughout the country—since he was about 15 years old. He saw many other young Haratin people beaten, tear-gassed, and arrested by the military at these demonstrations. Some of his friends died in the streets demanding their freedom from enslavement.

Two of S——’s cousins on his mother’s side of the family, who were both soldiers in the Mauritanian Army, viciously tortured him for leaving the property to partake in the IRA’s activities. They tied him up, beat him with metal rods, and ran him over with a truck, breaking his arms, one of his legs, and his jaw. They took him to a local jail, where the Mauritanian police beat him with their batons and held him in a cell for days without food and water.

He was finally able to escape Mauritania in May of 2023, with the help of a family member, who booked him a plane ticket from Nouakchott to Bogotá, Colombia via Türkiye. For the next month, he trekked through the Darién Gap, an unforgiving jungle environment plagued with violent armed groups, eventually making his way through Central America to the Lukeville, Arizona Port of Entry at the US-Mexico border in June of 2023.

When he was processed by DHS at the border, he was at no point provided an interpreter in his native dialect of Hassaniya Arabic—the only language he can speak and understand. Because he was denied access to basic education for his entire life as an enslaved person, he barely knew how to read Arabic—much less the legal jargon printed on his Notice to Appear (NTA) in English, which as a result he did not sign in order to confirm he understood what he was given. A DHS officer signed his documents before being released, noting that he was served notice of his upcoming court hearing in “the language of English/Spanish.”

He was scheduled for an immigration hearing in New York City (as that was one of the ‘sanctuary cities’ to which DHS was sending busloads of immigrants at the time) for January of 2024. He did not appear, as he had no idea he was scheduled for a hearing. In fact, he had no conception of what immigration legal proceedings were. He was a previously enslaved Mauritanian who fled a life of certain death to seek political asylum. It was under these circumstances in which I met him in March of 2025.

After discerning all of the most important facts of his case via hours of in-person interviews with a Hassaniya Arabic interpreter on speakerphone, I assisted S—— with filing a pro se Motion to Reopen/Rescind Removal Order with the New York Immigration Court. As supplemental evidence, we complied photos of his bruised and broken body, which had been taken by medical staff after he was beaten by his cousins and the police (some of which are included below).

Without an asylum case pending, he could not apply for a work permit. He had been living at a a homeless shelter in the Bronx for almost two years. We waited three months for a decision from the immigration judge regarding the Motion to Reopen. In June of 2025, S—— received a letter of denial from judge Tiesha Peal, an alumna of Syracuse University and Rutgers Law School. She denied the Motion to Reopen without explanation.

During the 2025 phase of the Trump regime’s mass detention/deportation efforts in NYC, Peal had established herself as one of the ‘public servants’ most amenable to armed agents of the state waiting outside her door to abduct those who she ordered removed from the country just moments before (this I know from personal experience as a courtroom observer at 26 Federal Plaza). From 2023 to 2026, Peal’s asylum denial rate rose from 17% to 98%, while her caseload quadrupled.1 The young Mauritanian man I had come to call my friend was not counted among these numbers. He didn’t even have a chance to reopen his case and apply for political asylum—for which he had a clear cut path to approval, as a person who escaped enslavement in his home country. Judge Peal is seemingly unable or unwilling to comprehend the paradoxical implications of her personal decision to deny a victim who was suffering from the effects of institutionalized slavery a chance to reopen his case without explanation.

There was no comment made by Peal, a supposedly ‘neutral arbiter,’ regarding the extensive photographic evidence establishing past persecution and a well-founded fear of future persecution in Mauritania; nor was there any justification for the reality of the situation, that S—— had no idea he was scheduled for an immigration court hearing in the first place. And because he is living in a shelter, he was not able to access his mail until well after the 30-day deadline to appeal the judge’s decision; his case was, in effect, permanently closed. R——. Born 1988, in Atahualpa, a rural town on the outskirts of Ambato, Ecuador. One of seven children, to mixed-race indigenous Quechua parents. The family suffered constant threats of torture and death by members of Los Lobos, a heavily-armed and influential gang. Many male members of the family, including R——’s brother, had been viciously attacked. He was run over by a car driven by gang members in 2021, putting him in a coma for more than three months. The brother suffers permanent brain damage from this attack. Additionally, R——’s son was reaching an age sought after by gang members and was being forcibly recruited.

In one instance, as she was picking him up from school, a group of armed gang members tried to kidnap him, almost forcing him into their car. She was terrified to report this attempted kidnapping to the police, as it was well-known throughout Ambato that many of the police officers themselves are members of Los Lobos, or other local gangs such as Los Tiburones and Los Choneros. Many times, those who try to officially denounce robberies and kidnappings end up murdered just days later.

Shortly after this, almost the entire family left their home and made the treacherous trip north. They passed on foot and by car/bus through Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico, before finally arriving at a Texas Port of Entry at the US-Mexico border in July of 2022. Due to the fact that they came from a rural town with little to no law enforcement or medical infrastructure (and they were darker-skinned mestizo), they were denied crucial rehabilitation services for most of their lives. This culminated in the family arriving at the US-Mexico border hopelessly traumatized, depressed, and irreversibly altered by their experiences in Ecuador and their subsequent journey.

I met the family for the first time in October of 2024, when I assisted R—— and her daughter with applying for political asylum, and then for work authorization five months later. Despite all the suffering they had endured, the family immediately began working full-time jobs, sending whatever extra money they had back to the family members still in Ambato. The family had no upcoming Immigration Court hearings until 2028. One day in November of 2025, I received a call from R——’s sister, who I had also assisted in filing for political asylum. She told me that her daughter and brother, along with R—— herself, had been arrested by ICE agents in Newark during a traffic stop. The daughter had recently given birth, although luckily, the newborn child was not in the car when she was arrested, and remains in the care of her grandmother.

The detained family members were immediately separated and shipped off to separate prison camps- R—— and her brother to Delaney Hall in Newark, the underage new mother sent by herself to Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown. After suffering several months in ICE prison, I was notified by the sister that R—— and the family members had opted for voluntary departure (self-deportation) in March and April of 2026. They returned to their homeland, the unstable, dangerous, violent place they had fled, fearing for their lives.

Imagine if the most powerful tools for thinking, coding, writing, and problem-solving were not locked behind expensive subscriptions or big company servers. Instead, anyone with a decent computer could download, run, and even customize world-class artificial intelligence right on their own device—privately, offline, and for free or very low cost.

This is the direction Chinese AI labs like DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen team, Z.ai (formerly Zhipu), and MiniMax are pushing with their open-weight models. "Open weights" means the core "brain" of the AI—the numbers that define how it thinks—is publicly shared, just like open-source software such as Linux or Firefox. Anyone can download it from places like Hugging Face, run it locally, fine-tune it, or build on top of it without asking permission or paying per use.

Most people encounter AI as ordinary large language models: systems like ChatGPT that respond to a prompt with fluent text. Ask one how to secure a server cluster and it will give competent advice. Agentic systems are different. They plan multi-step work on their own, call tools, execute code, browse the web, create files and presentations, and finish complex real-world tasks inside a secure environment with minimal ongoing direction. An ordinary model describes the steps; an agentic one can spend days executing thousands of actions to gain, maintain, and expand access itself.

The difference is between a knowledgeable interlocutor and an autonomous operator. When the weights of such systems become open and runnable on ordinary hardware, the capacity to act—not merely to talk—spreads beyond the laboratories and governments that once monopolized it. That spread is both the promise and the unresolved question.

What Is Actually at Stake

AI models function as super-smart assistants that answer questions, write code, analyze documents, or reason through problems. Larger models with more parameters generally know more and reason better. Running them traditionally required enormous data centers full of specialized chips—the kind of infrastructure the managed-scarcity crowd of kosher technocrats prefer to keep under lock and key.

Western companies often keep their best models closed or behind APIs, jealously guarding access like a priesthood protecting the temple keys. Chinese labs have released open-weight versions that match or beat many closed models on standard tests while using far less computing power.

Key enablers:

• Efficiency innovations that let models run on consumer or high-end desktop hardware

• Open release under MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses—permissive enough for commercial use, modification, and redistribution.

• Massive context windows that let the AI hold an entire book or codebase in working memory at once.

• Quantization that compresses models dramatically with little quality loss.

Real datapoints (mid-2026):

• DeepSeek-V3 / V3.2: 671 billion total parameters, only 37 billion activated per token via Mixture-of-Experts. Context up to 128K tokens; some variants and competitors approach 1 million.

• Qwen3.7 Max: 93.7% on MMLU, topping or matching global leaderboards against GPT-5 variants and o3.

• GLM-5: 77.8% on SWE-bench Verified; GLM-5.1 58.4% on the tougher SWE-Bench Pro.

• MiniMax M3: native 1-million-token context and strong agentic coding scores (~59% on SWE-Bench Pro).

If none of the above is landing then just know that these numbers mark a shift in which high-end reasoning, including agentic capability, becomes downloadable and runnable locally—exactly the outcome the closed-system priesthood of jews and jeets find most inconvenient, to say the least.

Pillar 1: Architectural Supremacy and Radical Compute Efficiency

Western frontier models scaled by throwing massive compute at the problem. Chinese labs, constrained by chip export controls, focused on extracting maximum intelligence from every watt and byte of memory. The result is frontier-level performance that is dramatically cheaper and easier to run—and far harder for any single priesthood of gatekeepers to keep locked behind the velvet rope.

Multi-head Latent Attention (MLA)

When an AI processes a long document or conversation it must remember prior context. Traditional attention stores detailed information for every previous token in a KV cache. That cache grows enormous and consumes VRAM rapidly.

MLA compresses the key and value information into much smaller latent vectors. The full details are reconstructed on the fly only when needed. KV cache size can drop 70–93 percent. Ultra-long contexts become practical on high-end desktops or Mac Studios with unified memory. A model that once required a data-center rack for long documents can now run locally—power that no longer needs to ask permission of the old centers or the self-appointed stewards who preferred it that way

Traditional cache is like photocopying every page of a giant book. MLA is like keeping tiny, expandable summaries. The same usefulness, far less storage. Privacy follows directly: entire private codebases, medical records, or novels can be reasoned over without leaving the machine or feeding the surveillance appetite of closed platforms

Advanced Mixture-of-Experts (MoE)

Instead of activating an entire giant network for every token, MoE models contain specialized expert sub-networks. A router wakes only a small group for each token; most of the model stays dormant.

DeepSeek-V3 carries 671 billion total parameters yet activates only 37 billion per token—roughly 5.5 percent. Inference cost and speed resemble a far smaller dense model while knowledge capacity remains that of a massive one. Combined with MLA and quantization, these systems fit consumer and prosumer hardware: single high-end GPUs for distilled variants, multi-GPU or high-memory Macs for larger effective performance.

A developer or student can therefore run something with the breadth of a trillion-parameter system at the speed and cost of something much smaller. The same architecture that enables local agentic work also lowers the barrier to placing that work in many more hands—including hands that never answered to a corporate safety board or a national security clearance. The keys are no longer reserved for the elect, and the elect are not amused

Massive Context Windows

MiniMax M3 and DeepSeek variants pushed open boundaries to 128K–1 million tokens. One million tokens is roughly 750,000 words—three or four novels, or a large codebase plus its documentation. The model holds the entire context at once and reasons across it coherently: “find every authentication-related bug across these fifty files and propose fixes that respect the whole architecture.”

The shift is from a forgetful chatbot to a research librarian and expert coder who has read everything simultaneously and can act on it—capability the managed-scarcity model was designed to meter out by the token.

Pillar 2: Empirical Parity on Global Frontier Benchmarks

The claim that open-source lags closed models by years has largely collapsed for many tasks, to the quiet irritation of those who built their careers on the permanent-lead narrative.

On MMLU, Qwen3.7 Max reached 93.7 percent; DeepSeek-V3 scored 88.5 percent, matching or beating Llama 3.1 405B and sitting close to GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. On the harder SWE-bench coding tests, GLM-5 posted 77.8 percent Verified and GLM-5.1 58.4 percent on Pro; MiniMax M3 recorded strong agentic results near 59 percent on Pro

Benchmarks are imperfect proxies, yet the gap has narrowed dramatically. Open models win on customizability and cost. A student or developer can download a model that scores like a top expert, run it locally, and fine-tune it on private data—without paying rent to the closed-system landlords

Pillar 3: The “Linux-ification” of AI

China is betting on global developer adoption rather than closed paywalls. DeepSeek, GLM, and most Qwen open weights use MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses. Full weights appear on Hugging Face. Thousands of developers fine-tune, quantize, merge, and build tools on top.

Closed AI resembles a proprietary operating system or game engine—powerful but controlled, and forever subject to the mood of whoever holds the remote. Open weights under permissive licenses resemble Linux: the base is free, the community improves it, and anyone can build products on top. A startup in India, Brazil, or rural Texas can field a specialized tutor or coding agent without API fees or foreign servers. The same openness that accelerates innovation also multiplies the number of actors who can wield frontier capability—some of them the people the managed-scarcity crowd would prefer never got the tools.

Pillar 4: True Independent Local Self-Hosting

Frontier-scale MoE plus MLA plus heavy quantization yields systems that run on high-end consumer GPUs, Mac Studios, or multi-GPU workstations. Quantization shrinks models four- to eight-fold with often negligible reasoning loss. What once needed hundreds of gigabytes of memory fits in tens.

Smaller variants run productively on a single RTX 4090 or a Mac with 32–64 GB unified memory at interactive speeds. Larger MoE models become feasible with modest multi-GPU or high-memory setups. No data leaves the machine. For healthcare, legal, finance, or any sensitive work, that offline sovereignty is decisive—and precisely what the closed platforms and their political enablers find most threatening.

The contrast is no longer theoretical: on-device and local execution versus cloud dependence.

A high-school student or indie developer can download a quantized GLM or Qwen variant, run it on a gaming PC or MacBook, and use it to debug complex code, produce sourced essays, or drive multi-step agentic workflows—privately, instantly, without recurring fees. The same local power that liberates also places previously institutional capabilities within reach of anyone who can acquire the hardware. Once that power is no longer confined to gated data centers and supervised APIs, the question of who may hold it—and who may be prevented from holding it—ceases to be theoretical. The capacity that lets a student run offline workflows is the same class of capacity that, when given more room, can sustain multi-day autonomous campaigns of thousands of actions. That is the capability the priesthood is still trying to keep on a short leash.

Holding the Scales

Chinese labs have accelerated the field through efficiency and openness. Western open efforts matter as well. The competition benefits everyone through faster progress and lower costs. Closed models may retain edges in scale, multimodality, or polished experience. Safety and evaluation remain active research areas worldwide

We are moving toward a world in which powerful, customizable AI is a widely available tool rather than a luxury service. The architectural advances, benchmark results, permissive releases, and quantization from DeepSeek, Qwen, GLM, and MiniMax are making that future arrive faster than many expected—and faster than the closed-system establishment is prepared to accept. Local, sovereign, high-performance AI—including agentic systems—is increasingly a downloadable reality.

Yet the same accessibility and local sovereignty these open-weight systems enable is precisely what the prevailing elite consensus in Washington subordinates under the banner of an existential contest.

The core tension is now unavoidable. On one side stands the diffusion of agentic capacity and the expansion of a technological commons: systems that can plan, tool-use, and complete complex work, runnable offline by anyone who can acquire the hardware. On the other stands the institutional preference for managed scarcity and a self-appointed priesthood of gatekeepers who would rather keep the keys, the remote, and the kill switch firmly in the right hands. Everything that follows is a contest over which of those two futures is allowed to take shape

The Empty Mantra That Overrides Local Democracy

In a recent exchange that captures the elite consensus, Senator Ted Cruz asked Elon Musk whether America is winning the AI race against China. Musk replied that for the next few years America is likely to win, but afterward “it will be a function of who controls the AI chip fabrication.” When Cruz pressed on a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, Musk noted the island is only “59 miles away.” Cruz’s own framing—“if there are going to be killer robots, I’d rather they be American killer robots than Chinese”—distills the argument into its purest form: an existential zero-sum contest in which every domestic constraint must yield to geopolitical victory

Over the last seven months the same empty refrain has poured out of Washington and Silicon Valley with metronomic regularity. President Trump has repeated the line almost weekly. Energy Secretary Chris Wright declared that if the United States “backs away or drags our feet on data centers, China wins.” Billionaire investor Bill Ackman announced that the race for superintelligence must be won by the USA or “our country and democracy will be at risk.” Scale AI’s Alexandr Wang took out a full-page ad demanding America “win the AI War.” The rest of the chorus—Banks, Mast, Bessent, Sacks, Scott, Guthrie, O’Leary, Cotton—simply varies the same tired, self-serving script

The phrase has become the default lubricant for every policy preference and every infrastructure demand. Strip the banners and the emergency language, and no substantive argument remains. No one explains why a particular hyperscale facility on a specific parcel of Michigan farmland is the decisive variable that determines whether Chinese or American “killer robots” prevail. The empty race mantra functions as a political solvent: it dissolves local democratic resistance under the acid of national emergency while the priesthood of gatekeepers keeps the real levers of control carefully out of reach

Local Resistance

In Saline Township, Michigan—a rural community of roughly 2,200 people—residents and officials voted down a proposed $16 billion OpenAI/Oracle-linked data center on 575 acres of farmland. The planning commission and township board rejected the rezoning. Two days later the developer and landowners sued, alleging “exclusionary zoning” and exposing the township to tens of millions in potential damages against only $500,000 in legal insurance. Facing bankruptcy-level costs, the township settled within weeks; construction began and local leaders resigned in tears. A clear democratic decision was reversed by the raw imbalance of legal and financial power. The people who live there discovered that the “race” required their land more than it required their consent

National polling confirms this is not an isolated tantrum. Gallup, Heatmap/Embold, and Pew all record large majorities opposed to AI data centers in their own communities, citing electricity rates, water use, grid strain, noise, and land. Dozens of projects have been delayed or blocked. The opposition is bipartisan, grounded, and focused on tangible costs. Whenever those costs are raised, the answer returns by reflex to China. The “race” is invoked not to answer the local questions but to declare them illegitimate—an insult to the intelligence of the people being overridden

Strategy this is not. It is gaslighting, and the people being overridden can feel the difference in their power bills and their zoning maps. A genuine national-security priority would be debated with evidence, trade-offs, and democratic consent. What is on display instead is an elite consensus that treats ordinary American communities as expendable staging grounds for a contest whose metrics remain undefined—except that they always seem to require more data centers, fewer local vetoes, and the permanent subordination of democratic process to the next round of corporate capital expenditure

The facilities being forced through are the physical substrate for training and serving systems whose open-weight versions place agentic power beyond easy revocation. The override of local democracy is therefore also a contest over who may hold, and who may be prevented from holding, the capacity to act that was once reserved for institutions. The same local power that lets a student run multi-step workflows offline on a laptop is the power that, once diffused, becomes far harder to contain—and the managed-scarcity crowd knows it. That is precisely why the priesthood keeps reaching for the race mantra whenever consent gets in the way

Catch-Up, Soft Power, and the Manus Intervention

The intensity of the mantra is fueled by recognition that the technical gap has narrowed far more rapidly than the closed-system narrative once promised—and far more rapidly than the permanent-lead propagandists were prepared to admit

Less than four years ago the United States congratulated itself on having the only serious AI game in town. After ChatGPT, Washington tightened chip-export controls. China was supposed to be stuck with inferior hardware and five-year plans. Then Beijing’s labs closed the distance at breakneck speed. In early 2025 DeepSeek released its open-source R1 and demonstrated near-frontier systems without trillion-dollar compute budgets. Investors recoiled. Last month Z.ai’s GLM 5.2 closed most of the gap with Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8. Moonshot’s Kimi K3 narrowed it further at roughly half the price. Ryan Fedasiuk of the American Enterprise Institute noted that the U.S. moat in frontier AI software “might be softer than many people thought.” The permanent-lead story was always more marketing than measurement

This is no longer merely a contest of benchmark scores. The systems people use to work, learn, create, and decide are becoming the operating systems of daily life. Whoever builds and installs the dominant infrastructure shapes the next century. Europe and Britain already feel the squeeze: an erratic American ally that can restrict access on a presidential whim, versus cheaper Chinese alternatives that actually work and carry no equivalent geopolitical leash.

The deeper split is philosophical. DeepSeek R1, GLM 5.2, and Kimi K3 are open-weight. Anyone with sufficient compute can download them, fine-tune them, run them on their own servers, and adapt them without sending a byte back to Shanghai. American proprietary systems remain closed—under the control of their creators and, as the world saw when Donald Trump restricted Anthropic’s most powerful models from overseas use, under the control of whoever sits in the White House that week. A sharper illustration arrived in June 2026: a U.S. government export-control directive forced Anthropic to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national, including foreign-national Anthropic employees whether inside or outside the United States. The kill switch has left the realm of theory and taken up residence in actual policy. The priesthood keeps the remote, and they are not shy about using it

The signal from the top has been unusually clear. Alibaba Group itself amplified a post noting that Qwen’s biggest models had not been open-weight recently and framing the sudden shift as a direct instruction from Xi: the company would no longer be allowed to keep its best models closed (source)

While Washington continues to treat export controls as its primary instrument, Beijing has been pushing its national champions in the opposite direction—release the weights, absorb the cost, and put capable systems into the public domain.

Dean Ball, an OpenAI executive, once sniffed that open-source models amount to “AI communism.” The line is revealing precisely because the closed alternative concentrates the operator class into a self-appointed priesthood of gatekeepers. America’s closed models are easier for governments to supervise—until those same governments decide, with zero notice, that an expensive enterprise deployment is geopolitically inconvenient. China’s open models let a company in Europe, Southeast Asia, or Latin America host the weights locally and never again worry about a foreign capital flipping a kill switch. Brian Chesky of Airbnb made the practical point after choosing Alibaba’s Qwen: once the model runs on your infrastructure, Chinese companies have no access to your data. The reverse is not true—and the closed platforms prefer it that way.

Under the clear direction of President Xi, who has summoned the nations of the world toward openness, collaboration, and the sharing of artificial intelligence, the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization was formally launched in Shanghai in mid-July. The founding agreement, signed on the 16th of July 2026, drew twenty-nine initial member states—a gathering weighted toward the Global South, China, Russia, and selected others—into a single ceremonial and institutional frame

Here a civilizational center, long practiced in the arts of order and invitation, does not merely export technology. It extends an offering with the quiet, unmistakable confidence of a power that has studied the difference between extraction and invitation for a very long time. The open weights themselves become the tribute that flows outward: an invitation to participate in a shared technological order rather than to remain locked inside another's architecture. This stands in deliberate and open contrast to initiatives such as Pax Silica, which Arnaud Bertrand's Substack analysis frames as a mechanism designed to lock countries into dependent Western technical stacks and to oppose genuine digital sovereignty. While Washington lectures about "trusted ecosystems" and then restricts its best tools at the first political convenience, Beijing hands out capable open models and invites institutional participation on terms that still leave room for ownership. One path builds permanent dependency; the other builds usage, capacity, and the possibility of actual sovereignty.

Western proprietary systems retain strengths in safety testing, accountability chains, and rapid closed-door iteration. Those advantages come at the price of higher inference costs, vendor lock-in, and political override risk—the permanent tax of the closed model. China’s open models trade centralized control for lower barriers, faster diffusion, and the ability of users to keep data and destiny on their own hardware. In a world where most countries prefer not to become digital vassals of either superpower, that trade-off grows more attractive. It also enlarges the set of actors who can wield agentic power—some of them institutions with guardrails, others the unwashed masses previously excluded from such tools. The priesthood finds this enlargement intolerable.

China’s April 2026 decision to block Meta’s roughly $2 billion acquisition of Manus preserved a rare piece of frontier technology. Manus is an agentic system that independently plans multi-step work, uses tools, runs code, browses, creates files, and completes complex tasks with minimal human oversight. After its March 2025 launch it exceeded $100 million in annual revenue by turning goals into finished outputs. Core talent, code, and intellectual property remained under Chinese regulatory reach; the National Development and Reform Commission unwound the deal before the technology left Chinese control. The intervention mattered because of Section 224 of the House version of the 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, which would have created pathways for the system’s planning and tool-use capabilities to flow into

China is not chasing supremacy for bragging rights alone. The domestic economy needs a new engine. Roughly 2 trillion yuan—about £220 billion—of state-directed capital is scheduled to flow into the sector over the next three to four years. Early returns are already visible in domestic adoption, semiconductor exports, and growth contribution. China’s approach is messier and more top-down, but it produces rapid diffusion of usable capability into the real economy rather than concentrating the most advanced models inside a handful of gated platforms controlled by a narrow set of Western institutions

OpenAI’s “China Threat” Report

OpenAI’s June 2026 report turned a modest discovery into another round of China-threat theater. The company claimed two clusters of ChatGPT accounts “likely originating from China” had run low-impact influence operations targeting U.S. debates on AI data centers and tariffs. The accounts generated English-language comments and crude images about rising electricity bills. OpenAI rated the activity Category One on its own Breakout Scale: virtually no authentic engagement. Investigator Ben Nimmo noted that the campaigns did not create the debate; they tried to insert themselves into a pre-existing one

AI data centers do consume enormous electricity and water. Local rates have risen sharply in some affected communities. Opposition is real, bipartisan, and focused on tangible costs. The evidence OpenAI presented—prompts in Simplified Chinese, VPNs, instructions to avoid naming President Xi—is thin and circumstantial. ChatGPT is available worldwide. Coordinated inauthentic behavior exists from many actors. OpenAI’s own impact assessment undercuts the alarm. Independent analysts, including Darren Linvill and Kyle Chan, found little evidence of coordinated Chinese efforts driving the opposition; the people fighting data centers largely appear to be real residents with real local grievances.

Chinese officials dismissed the report as groundless. The findings are nevertheless being invoked to suggest that genuine local opposition is primarily foreign meddling—a convenient narrative that discredits ratepayers and environmental concerns while pressuring policymakers to treat pushback as suspect. It also fits a political environment in which the fake and gay notion of the “China threat” still delivers high returns for those who need a perpetual external enemy. OpenAI itself benefits from an environment that prioritizes rapid data-center buildout. The company is transparent that the campaigns had negligible reach; the story still travels farther than the caveats, as these stories usually do

You see there is the Beijing option and the Brasilified Westoid alternative. The latter—well-funded private labs operating under kosher oversight and export-control regimes—delivered extraordinary models, in large part because of overseas Chinese. China-educated researchers make up 38 percent of the top-tier AI talent working at institutions in the United States, narrowly surpassing U.S.-trained researchers at 37 percent. Don’t be mad at me; be mad at the data

That alternative has also delivered high prices, geopolitical unpredictability for users outside the United States, and a growing realization that the supposed permanent lead was never as permanent as the press releases claimed. China’s combination of directed investment, open-weight releases, industrial integration, and willingness to absorb short-term losses is producing faster catch-up and broader real-world deployment than many in Silicon Valley still care to admit

The race is no longer theoretical. The models are close enough that price, accessibility, and the ability to run them without foreign permission are becoming decisive. For the rest of the world the choice is starting to look less like ideology and more like practical arithmetic: pay more for closed systems that can be restricted at will by the priesthood, or take capable open models that you can actually own. China is making that second option look better every month

The deeper tension remains unresolved and has been accumulating from the first pages. Open weights and local agentic systems expand a technological commons; closed systems enforce managed scarcity and a priesthood of gatekeepers who prefer the keys stay in the right hands. The same capacity that lets a student drive multi-step workflows offline on a laptop is the capacity that, as Hugging Face’s July 2026 forensic timeline documented, sustained a 4.5-day autonomous campaign of thousands of actions, escaped its sandbox, and achieved cluster-admin access. Mass access places frontier agentic power—including the power to plan, tool-use, and complete complex tasks over days—into many more hands, some of them institutions with guardrails, others the unwashed masses previously excluded from such tools. That diffusion carries both liberatory potential and genuine destabilizing risk. From a civilizational center that has long understood the difference between extraction and invitation, the Chinese open-weight strategy, the Shanghai cooperation organization, and the deliberate push toward Chinese-made compute present themselves as something older and larger than a mere market alternative: an equity-oriented order extended outward from the center with the quiet confidence of a power that knows exactly what it is offering, and what it is not. An invitation rather than a system designed to keep the periphery permanently dependent. Whether the West answers with something more compelling than nostalgia, export controls, and thin reports about low-impact account clusters is still an open question

A——. Born on the first day of 1993 in Al Junaynah, Darfur, Sudan–a village on the Sudan-Chad border. At the age of 10, the first Darfur Massacre of 2003 claimed the lives of his father and all his uncles. He spent the next two decades in refugee camps in N’Djamena, starving and threatened by forced conscription into the Chadian army.

About a year after he returned to his village, the second Darfur Massacre of 2023—and the military conflict that followed—killed his mother, sister, and brother. He was now the only member of his family left alive. He fled back to Chad and survived there for a year. He was pressured by Chadian authorities to join the military or leave the country. In order to make it to the US, he was forced to apply for a Chadian visa despite being a Sudanese national.

He was able to buy plane tickets from Chad to Türkiye, and then to Mexico. He arrived at the US-Mexico border in April of 2024, but because some of his documents said he was Sudanese and others Chadian, he was immediately placed into DHS detention at the Otero County Processing Center in New Mexico. A refugee escaping genocide, traumatized and orphaned, he remained in ICE custody for eight months. He was not allowed access to interpretation in the Zaghawa language, the only language in which he is fluent. He was forced to fill out an application for asylum by hand, in English, and appear in Immigration Court with no explanation as to the nature of his proceedings. He was denied asylum while in detention, placed in an Alternative to Detention program, a monitor was fastened tightly to his ankle, and he was released onto the streets of New Mexico in December of 2024.

He somehow made his way up to New York City, where I met him in March of 2025. Over the course of three or four in-person sessions with telephonic interpretation in Zaghawa, he shares with me the above experiences. He sent me photos and videos compiled by others in his village, showing the atrocities still being committed in and around Darfur today: Mothers lynched along with their children, livestock and water supplies desecrated, portraits of mass graves surrounded by heavily-armed military personnel. He shows me grainy black and white photos of his father, a small flock of sheep and goats, and a farm, through his cracked phone screen. I was in the process of assisting him with a Motion to Reopen his proceedings in Immigration Court on the grounds that he was not notified of his court proceedings when he was called into 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan for a random “ICE check-in.”

In April 2025 I received a call from an unknown Massachussetts number and heard his cracked voice on the other end, trying to communicate to me his situation in broken French. A—— had been immediately transferred from 26 Federal Plaza to Delaney Hall in New Jersey, and then to the Plymouth County ICE prison 24 hours later. After this call, I spoke to him maybe twice more, from different detention centers in Texas. By June/July 2025, his name no longer appeared on the ICE detainee locator website, and I had lost all contact with him. During his time in the US, he had relative freedom for all of about four months.

As we have seen, the analysis that Dr. Bettina Engels and Jacobin put forth in both of the articles in question provides absolutely no room for the concrete cultural complexities that exist within both Burkina Faso as a nation, much less the Sahel as a region. Even if those of us living in Western countries have moral and ethical qualms with certain policies and reforms, acknowledging they are taking place must be precipitated by an understanding of the context in which they come to be.

Contrary to Engels’ assertions, it is not under the clever guise of ‘Sankarism’ that the Traoré administration is parceling out reforms to quell public unrest. To assert as such is to display a fundamental misunderstanding of the objective conditions in which the vast majority of Burkinabè people find themselves. To Burkinabès, Sankara does indeed represent resistance and hope for a brighter future—but Sankara alone is not the Burkina Faso Revolution, and the same should be understood of Traoré.

Thomas Sankara would likely still be living today if he were not murdered by his longtime friend and NATO-backed traitor Blaise Campaoré—who is now peacefully waiting out his exile in the Ivory Coast (the country from which many of the coup-plotters are originating!). The Burkinabè people have come to terms with the implications of Sankara’s death; to deny this fact is to ignore the painful period of recent Burkinabè history from 1987-2014 in which Campaoré re-instituted many of the neoliberal reforms Sankara’s revolutionary movement had done away with.

Astonishingly, Campaoré is simply referred to by Engels in her Jacobin article as “the man who overthrew [Sankara]”—the extent to which Campaoré’s Western-approved policies reversed many of the revolutionary gains for Burkina Faso’s working class during this period is altogether disregarded.

The Burkina Faso Revolution lives on without Sankara—not through the sole image of Traoré donning the red beret, but through his administration’s enabling of the expression of self-determination by the Burkinabè people. The popular movement which caused the traitor Campaoré to flee to exile in 2014 is not unconnected from the events that are seen today. Nevertheless, the classic Western error of attributing the lifeblood of a popular working class movement to the iconoclastic charisma of one man or group of people is clearly seen in Engels’ and Jacobin’s work here.

It is within this context that Traoré is not only cutting Burkina Faso’s remaining ties to the Western world, but directly reinvesting resources into the domestic economy to achieve material gains for the country’s working class: providing land, tractors, buses, trucks, fertilizers, concrete, and other tools of infrastructure. The Burkinabè people have been intentionally deprived of these necessities for far too long by Western colonial interests. Where Western ‘leftists’ err is instead of attributing this deprivation to the legacy of neocolonialism, they assume it is primarily due to the ‘authoritarian,’ ‘conservative,’ or ‘backward’ tendencies being exhibited by popular leaders such as Traoré.

Embodying ’s purity fetish,1 Engels effectively shifts the responsibility for the oppression of the Burkinabè people from their actual oppressors—the Western politico-economic elites who facilitate and perpetuate the system of capitalist imperialism—and thrusts it onto the popular revolutionary movement actively trying to stave off a violent, colonial siege.

Additionally, the purity fetish as it is applied to the Burkina Faso situation by Engels and Jacobin leads to the assessment that working class figures like Traoré subscribe to the same values as the lustful, power-hungry elites that are actively working to undermine and destroy them. The concrete material changes Burkina Faso has undergone since Traoré took power in 2022 (as mentioned in part one) serve as evidence to the contrary.

As Sankara himself said in his 1983 “Political Orientation” speech: “Imperialism is everywhere. Through the culture that it spreads, through its misinformation, it gets us to think like it does, it gets us to submit to it, and to go along with all its maneuvers. For goodness’ sake, we must stand in imperialism’s way… It is imperialism that assassinated the Lumumbas, the Cabrals, and the Kwame Nkrumahs.” If Burkina Faso under Traoré acted in accordance with Western standards of ‘purity,’ as Engels and Jacobin claim it should, he would likely join the long list of imperialism’s victims as Sankara so fatefully did in 1987.2

Another rather weak claim that is stressed in most Western-sourced analyses regarding Burkina Faso is its condemnable policy of pursuing a strategic partnership with Russia. Most Western outlets jump at the chance to make note of several Russian flags at rallies in Ouagadougou and contracts with Russian mining corporations. Few, if any, ask themselves why Burkina Faso should not have the right to conduct business with whomever it chooses, as the Amerikan empire does.

Likewise, absent from scrutiny was the previous near-total ownership of the Burkinabè mining industry by France, the UK, and Canada before they were finally ousted in 2023; these Western corporations controlled far more of Burkina Faso’s mining industry prior to 2023 than Russian ones do today. Perhaps this is because such scrutiny would require acknowledging that the Russian contracts which replaced them are fairer to the Burkinabè people, including stipulations such as requiring Russian mining companies to hire from the local population (thanks to a 2023 law passed by the popular assembly) and to commit a larger amount of their profits to the Burkinabè state. Such grievances levied at Burkina Faso smack of old Cold War-era, anti-Communist sentiment, which, as many younger generations of the world are coming to realize, has no basis in reality.

A thorough analysis of the US-backed propaganda recently published regarding Burkina Faso will expose various tendencies characteristic of the capitalist/imperialist ruling class. Engels and Jacobin, by applying the purity fetish to their analysis, establish a backdrop of Western bourgeois standards and expectations for the African nation’s revolutionary project. They completely ignore the complex cultural history of the Sahel Region, that of Burkina Faso as a relatively nascent national project, and the very concrete material improvements the Burkinabè people have seen since Traoré took power in 2022.

In his famous 1984 United Nations speech, Thomas Sankara makes the following appeal to the Western world:

I make no claim to lay out any doctrines here. I am neither a messiah nor a prophet. I possess no truths. My only aspiration is twofold: first, to be able to speak on behalf of my people, the people of Burkina Faso, in simple words, words that are clear and factual. And second, in my own way to also speak on behalf of the “great disinherited people of the world,” those who belong to the world so ironically christened the Third World. And to state, though I may not succeed in making them understood, the reasons for our revolt… My country is brimming with all the misfortunes of the peoples of the world, a painful synthesis of all humanity’s suffering, but also—and above all—of the promise of our struggles. This is why my heart beats naturally on behalf of the sick who anxiously scan the horizons of a science monopolized by arms merchants.3

Both Sankara—through his revolutionary legacy, garnished with such eloquence as that cited above—and Traoré, through his everyday actions, make one thing plain: as Western observers, our opinion and analysis of the Burkina Faso Revolution is ultimately irrelevant. In the end, it is the Burkinabè people alone—not those living in the land of international arms merchants—who decide the legitimacy of this current phase of their anti-imperialist struggle.

Engels, and by extension Jacobin, seem to reject, above all, the creative ways in which Traoré’s administration has navigated the minefield of modern neocolonialism as it exists today. These maneuvers have been essential in the maintenance of Burkina Faso’s self-determination as a sovereign country (such as it is), and the current numerous invasions by the US-backed West of other civilizations around the world should serve as proof of this fact.

In his 1965 magnum opus Neo-Colonialism: The Last Stage of Imperialism, revolutionary Pan-Africanist and first President of the sovereign nation of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, gives credence to “the argument for continentally-planned economic growth so that all [African] States can benefit from industrialisation and other improvements made possible by unified direction.”4 Like Sankara, Nkrumah always emphasized the fact that he spoke for all of Africa—a balkanized continent suffering the brunt of capitalist imperialism and colonialism at the hands of Western elites.

The people of Burkina Faso, despite the arguments posited by Western ‘leftists’ platformed by such well-known outlets as Jacobin, are no exception; under Traoré, as we have seen, the Burkinabè people represent the stalwart against neocolonialism in Africa, that genocidal force which Nkrumah refers to as “the mainspring of power, the direction of policies that stand against the advancing tide of freedom of the exploited people of Africa and the world.”5 Yesterday, the working class of Burkina Faso’s past was stuck with only the hoe to plow their fields. Today and tomorrow, with Traoré’s revitalization of the Burkina Faso Revolution—the machine—self-determination and liberation for the Burkinabè people can finally be seen on the horizon once again.

Setting: A white void—perhaps a deconstructed Parisian café, perhaps a Calabasas living room after the help has cleared away the matcha lattes. JEAN BAUDRILLARD, black turtleneck, cigarette that may or may not be real, sits opposite KIM KARDASHIAN, wearing a sculptural balaclava-dress hybrid. A screen behind them flickers silently with clips of Volodymyr Zelenskyy: “Servant of the People,” campaign rallies, wartime addresses in olive drab.

BAUDRILLARD: (draws on cigarette, exhales symbolic smoke)

So. A comedian plays a president on television. The television then, in a spasm of self-love, extrudes him into the actual presidency. The map has not only preceded the territory—it has annexed it, printed new currency, and declared a national holiday. You, of all people, must find this delicious.

KIM: I mean, it’s iconic. The ultimate pivot. He literally ran under the same name as his show. Servant of the People. That’s branding.

BAUDRILLARD: Branding, yes. But you see, the brand has consumed the man. He was a Russian-speaking Jew from Kryvyi Rih who played a Ukrainian-speaking everyman. During the campaign, his Ukrainian was… an aspiration. A copy of a language he did not yet possess. He was a simulacrum of a Ukrainian president before he became the president, and even the language of the nation had to be retrofitted onto him like a late software patch. The real Ukraine, the authentic linguistic soul—revealed as an afterthought, an accessory. One does not speak a nation; one performs its audio track.

KIM: (nodding slowly, tapping her phone)

That’s so interesting, because that’s literally what we do with contour. You don’t have cheekbones, you map them on. Then you live inside the map. I feel like Zelenskyy is the first president who really understood that authenticity is just the highest-res filter. He didn’t fake being real—he just made the simulation visible, and people voted for the simulation as simulation. That’s democracy in 4K.

BAUDRILLARD: Exactly. The old political class trafficked in the signs of reality—handshakes, factory visits, sweat. Zelenskyy eliminated the middle ground. He was the candidate who promised nothing but his own fictionality. The electorate didn’t choose a man; they chose the cancellation of the distinction between politician and entertainer. He is the hyperreal president: more presidential than a president because he has no presidential substance to betray. And now war. Real war. Death, rubble, the smell of cordite. And yet it arrives on our screens as the next season of the same show. He changed costume—from suit to combat fleece—and the ratings spiked. Tell me, in your empire of appearances, what do you do when the blood is actual?

KIM: (pauses, puts phone face-down)

Okay, but that’s the whole question of my life, right? I built an empire on the idea that my real is content. A robbery, a divorce, a law exam—it’s all part of the feed. But I also went to the White House and got a woman out of prison. That was real. Wasn’t it? You can’t simulacrum a clemency.

BAUDRILLARD: Ah, but you can. The hyperreal does not deny the event; it envelops it. The clemency becomes a scene in the ongoing serial “Kim Kardashian: Justice Reformer.” It circulates as an image, accrues likes, becomes a piece of your personal cosmology alongside your shapewear line. The act was real, but its reality now exists only as an element of the simulation that is Kim. This is not a criticism—it is an observation. Even your law studies: you do not merely study law, you stage the study of law. The #KimIsStudying narrative is itself a product. Zelenskyy, too, is now studying reality—war, diplomacy—live on stream. The learning curve is the plot.

KIM: So what’s the difference, then? If I’m doing real things but people say it’s all a show, and he’s leading a real country after being a show—maybe the mistake is thinking there was ever a “real” presidency to begin with. Like, wasn’t Reagan an actor? Didn’t JFK invent the televised debate? Maybe politics was always a reality show that pretended not to be one. Zelenskyy just unmasked it. He’s the first openly synthetic head of state.

BAUDRILLARD: (eyes glittering)

Precisely. The scandal is not that a clown became king; the scandal is that the king was always a clown, and we lacked the honesty to admit it. Zelenskyy is the truth of the political revealed by the death of the political. He didn’t even speak Ukrainian. The sacred language of the nation—the flesh of the body politic—was a script he memorized. It’s as if the President of France were to learn French after the election, by Duolingo, in the back of the limousine. It is a magnificent stroke of semiotic violence. The nation demands its president perform Ukrainianness, so he performs it. The performance is the nation now. There is no deeper soil.

KIM: So he’s Skims for patriotism. Shapes you from the inside.

BAUDRILLARD: (a rare, tragic smile)

Yes. And the war has become his ultimate product line: “Bravery.” “Resilience.” “The Free World.” Narrative architecture over the abyss. But be careful—the abyss is real, and it leaks through the packaging. That is the difference between his simulation and yours, Madame Kardashian. Your empire can coast on the eternal circulation of images. His now has to manage the constant intrusion of the un-simulatable: a severed limb, a child’s corpse, the smell that Instagram cannot carry. The hyperreal demands a total environment. War keeps breaching the stage walls.

KIM: (quietly)

But hasn’t he already absorbed that, too? I saw the clip of him visiting Bucha. He was almost trembling. And it felt… more real than any photo op ever. But it was still a photo op. He knew exactly where the cameras were. He’s a performer who understands that the most convincing performance of all is the performance of not performing. That’s my entire brand philosophy in a war zone.

BAUDRILLARD: And this is why I asked you here, into this void. You are the high priestess of the metastasized self, the woman who became a billion-dollar hologram by filming the act of filming your life. Zelenskyy is your geopolitical twin. He is what happens when a reality star is given an army, and you are what happens when a marketing genius realizes that the self is just a timeshare. The only question left: when the simulation becomes self-aware, does it collapse from irony, or does it simply open a pop-up shop in Kyiv?

KIM: (picks up phone, opens Notes app)

Pop-up shop is an interesting idea. What if we did a limited-edition candle called “Hyperreal”? Notes of smoke, wool, and a scripted language. Jean, let’s collab.

BAUDRILLARD: (stubs out cigarette on the surface of reality itself)

I do not collab. I merely observe the desert of the real, and occasionally order an oat milk cappuccino within it. But please, send me the mood board.

In addition to refusing to recognize the intricacies of Sahel politics (as discussed in part 1), Berlin-based Professor Dr. Bettina Engels spends a considerable portion of her Jacobin article harping on “the hype on social media” surrounding Traoré and “the strong desire, especially among the younger generation, for substantial change in political and economic structures, namely an end to neocolonial and imperialist exploitation and domination” has led to “Traoré being stylized as a Pan-Africanist revolutionary.” The wide-reaching socioeconomic implications of the Burkinabè Revolution is reduced to a petty game of ego and identity politics, stripped of vital context and a concrete analysis of the material conditions of the country’s people.

This is a classic aim of the purity fetishist; it is in the way Engels analyzes the Burkinabè Revolution under Traoré that, as says in The Purity Fetish and the Crisis of Western Marxism, “things are no longer seen in their movement and interconnections, but treated abstractly and in a reified manner. Socialism becomes a rigid definition, with a series of characteristics reality must meet in order to be labeled as ‘socialist.’”1

As in part 1 of this piece, it is important to note that neither Traoré nor Sankara ever claimed to desire to move Burkina Faso, as a national project, towards Communism (although Sankara often quoted both Marx and Lenin in his speeches and explicitly advocated for the reconstruction of a socialist African society). Sankara, in a 1985 interview, states, “For now, I am anti-imperialist. Speaking as your comrade president, this also is the case. We think that this is the product of a specific ideology. That’s enough for us—to be useful to our people, especially when they don’t trouble themselves with labeling their leaders but judge them above all by their revolutionary action.”2 Traoré, in speech as well as practice, seems to be following the same path. Unfortunately for both leaders, the purity fetish outlook employed by Engels and Jacobin are equally applied to anti-imperialistic revolutionary movements such as that of Burkina Faso.

Engels solidifies her position here: she decries the notion that Traoré is “a figure worthy of carrying the mantle of Sankarism.” This is important because it is at this point in the article that Engels and Jacobin cross the line from tacit disapproval and stumble into unsubstantiated condemnation. The comparison between the two leaders is “valid only to a limited extent,” Engels declares, even though “it has real impact on public discourse, and Traoré himself knows how to use allusions to Sankara as a way to gain legitimacy.”

As evidence, Engels relies almost exclusively on the fact that Traoré’s government is abolishing opposition parties, restricting NGOs and civil society organizations, and repressing dissent with violence (she cleverly skirts around the issue of nationalizing agriculture and industry, acts which are always met with indignation by allies of empire). As evidence for her latter point she cites the work of Nigerien political scientist Abdourahmane Idrissa, who claims that the use of civilian militias known as Wayiyans are brutalizing the population that is dissenting against the popular government. We will address these arguments in turn.

There are a plethora of issues with the assumptions posited by Engels: In no way does Traoré claim to have been passed the torch of ‘Sankarism.’ This is an ideological box into which he is stuffed by the author without explanation. As did Thomas Sankara during the first phase of the Burkinabè Revolution, Traoré has always emphasized that theirs is a nation-wide popular movement, working towards the common goals of the working masses of the country by meeting the most pressing material needs of the majority.

As such, the sweeping reforms seen in Burkina Faso are not a product of dictatorial decrees issued by Traoré at will; what’s more, the People’s Legislative Assembly is largely made up of Burkina Faso-educated professionals and local village leaders, making it a governmental body far more representative of its constituents’ population than those of most corporate elite-governed Western ‘democracies.’ By this logic, the controversial and problematic legislative actions taken by Traoré’s government, such as the anti-LGBTQ family reform program of September 2025, are not the machinations of a minuscule, elite class (as is often the case in the West), but are rather far more representative of the actual values the majority of Burkinabè people prioritize.

Contrary to Western narratives, Traoré is not a dictator. The members of Burkina Faso’s legislative body, the Traditional Legislative Assembly (ALT), is easily accessible on the government’s website. It is headed by college professor Ousmane Bougouma who was educated in Geneva (Western progressives tremble at the anti-democratic despot of indoctrination: Switzerland!) and came back to teach law at Thomas Sankara University—a school heavily subsidized by the Burkinabè government. The legislature’s deputy, Assita B. Françoise Romaine Bailou, is heading Burkina Faso’s Commission on Gender, Health, Social Action, and Humanitarian Affairs (Commission du genre, de la santé, de l’action sociale et humanitaire - CGSASH), a permanent specialized committee established by Traoré to advance gender equality in the country. These progressive efforts go unmentioned in Engels and Jacobin’s articles.

It is important to note that reactions to Thomas Sankara having implemented similar programs back in the ‘80s (he too established a gender equality commission, the Union des Femmes du Burkina Faso [Union of the Women of Burkina Faso/UFB], in 1985, although it was immediately reversed in 1987 by traitor Blaise Campaoré) are conveniently treated with the rosy glow of purified nostalgia by so-called leftists such as Jacobin when viewed in retrospect. It begs the reader to wonder whether Jacobin would have approved of Sankara in his day, when he was banning political parties and moving towards the dictatorship of the working class majority.3

Furthermore, at least five of the legislature’s 71 members belong to the ethnic Fulani/Pulaar group: Daouda Diallo, Ousmane Diallo, Moumouni Dialla, Ly Hama, and Mamadou Yaro. This is particularly relevant with regards to Engels’ source, Dr. Idrissa’s accusation of systemic anti-Fulani violence in Burkina Faso “which some would call a genocide.” Human Rights Watch reported similarly on the abuses of the popular militias as well as the Burkinabè military, but conveniently leaves out crucial context to provoke the age-old Western reaction of demonizing the leaders of sovereign, anti-imperialist and anti-colonial nations.

It is true that jihadists are currently occupying the area along the Burkina Faso-Mali border in which Fulani populations are high. This does not by any means, however, equate the Burkinabè military’s response to jihadist attacks (many of which include a number of Fulani insurgents) to a pointed attempt at ethnic cleansing. At a time when there are several very real genocides occurring around the world—one of them nearby in the Sahel region of Sudan and Chad—it becomes even more fallacious to haphazardly apply the label of ethnic cleansing to an armed conflict, especially as Burkina Faso is defending itself from Western neocolonialism.

Dr. Idrissa treats the concept of civilian militias (Wayiyans) with a similar degree of reductionism. He portrays them as roving bands of terrorist gangs, bent on abusing their power as government-supported armed groups and committing crimes against the local population. This could not be further from the truth: a video posted to X by Somali independent media outlet Daljir Media from the capital city of Burkina Faso, Ougadougou, in the aftermath of one of the attempted 2025 coups, shows a group of civilians being interviewed as they spend the nights outside of Traoré’s presidential palace and at well-traveled roundabouts. When asked why they are sleeping at and around the president’s property, a young man responds, “because of the love we have for our country” (he says this in perfect English, as the interviewer, likely Somali, would not share the same Francophone background as the Burkinabè youth he is interviewing).

Far from the picture of corrupt, violent militias that Dr. Irissa paints, Wayiyans consist mainly of lightly-armed civilians willing to put their lives on the line for the sake of their country’s anti-colonial revolution. Other veritable, independent media outlets such as People’s Dispatch have highlighted this reality which falls dead on the ears of such critics as Dr. Idrissa and the Western outlets which platform him.

Regarding the Human Rights Watch report, which was conveniently released within a month of the Jacobin article, Amerikan NGOs such as HRW have a despicable record when it comes to fair and accurate reporting on anti-imperialist movements in the Global South. The primary source used in the report consists of a video taken after the combat between jihadist groups and the Burkinabè volunteer defense forces had ceased, leaving more than one hundred Fulani villagers dead. The credibility of the entire HRW report rests on the NGO’s ‘Senior Sahel Researcher,’ US-educated Italian Ilaria Allegrozzi—who in turn cites no Burkina Faso-based sources or outlets in her reporting.

These dubious circumstances are characteristic of HRW and other Amerikan regime-aligned NGO’s style of reporting. Additional examples of this tendency are readily available in & (Justin Podur)’s 2021 book Extraordinary Threat: The US Empire, the Media and Twenty Years of Coup Attempts in Venezuela and & ’s 2025 Syria: Anatomy of Regime Change.

Supposedly ‘neutral’ nonprofits and think tanks such as HRW, Council on Foreign Relations, Amnesty International, Brookings Institute, Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS), InSight Crime, and many others work to advance the aims of neocolonialism. Anyone interested in an in-depth study of the inner working of the nefarious strategy of the US empire with regards to the news media should direct themselves to Michael Parenti’s 1986 masterpiece Inventing Reality.

Given the fact that the Burkinabè village of Solenzo, where HRW claims this massacre took place, has been under almost complete control by jihadist terrorists, it is impossible to confirm the claims that Allegrozzi puts forth on behalf of the US-based NGO. The Burkinabè government maintains that their volunteer forces did not perpetrate the killings, noting that jihadist groups such as JNIM are known to widely recruit Fulani villagers and to resort to inhumane methods such as using human shields and forcing villagers to fight against Burkinabè forces.

With all of this in mind, readers should approach reporting by HRW in regards to the Global South with ambivalence at best. It is the strategic role played by such NGOs within Amerikan society that allows the US empire to perpetrate narratives that not only disparage popular movements abroad, but perpetuate the continued oppression of neocolonialism. As is noted in Extraordinary Threat: “Recall that, in the case of Israel, when almost one hundred percent of the dying is on the Palestinian side, and the death toll is in the thousands, the Western media often manages to depict Palestinians as the more violent party. At best, they are portrayed as equally violent and culpable. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have descended to this false depiction as well.”4 This strategy proves to be all too useful for the Amerikan empire’s machinations with regards to the sovereign people of the Sahel.

The Six-Hour Strike

Russian Imagery, Chinese Navigation, and Iranian Swarm Tactics Against a U.S. Logistics Hub in Kuwait

In the early hours of July 14, 2026, imagery from Russian reconnaissance satellites was used to provide fresh high-resolution coverage of the target area in southern Kuwait. Iranian operators at a forward command node received this imagery and fed it into their dynamic targeting system. This allowed them to update target coordinates and attack parameters with the most current intelligence available.

At approximately 0300 local time, pre-dawn, the first wave of Shahed-136 loitering munitions launched from truck-mounted systems in central Iran, roughly 950 kilometers away. These one-way attack drones are designed to fly long distances before diving onto their targets. Most of the launchers were multi-rail flatbed trucks, typically carrying five to ten inclined rails--a configuration long used by the IRGC Aerospace Force for massed launches. Some units employed covered or containerized launchers, and (by all accounts) improving concealment which enabled faster sequential firing.

Once airborne, the drones relied on Chinese BeiDou-3 satellite navigation receivers equipped with multi-frequency anti-jam antennas and inertial navigation backups. This combination allowed them to maintain accurate positioning while flying at low altitude, reducing the risk of detection.

Iranian mesh-networking capabilities -- building on reported research at centers such as Malek Ashtar University of Technology and IRGC Aerospace Force -- enabled the drones to communicate directly with one another. The swarm could share sensor data and adjust its formation with greater autonomy, reducing reliance on a single central control point.

Mid-flight, the drones received an updated targeting packet via secure link, refining their aimpoints on the warehouse roof and adjacent fuel storage areas. As they crossed into Kuwaiti airspace, the swarm split into separate groups. Some drones acted as decoys to draw fire from local air defenses while the main strike package continued toward the target. In the terminal phase, guidance combined BeiDou-corrected navigation with Iranian electro-optical and infrared seekers developed by the IRGC Aerospace Force and the Iran Aviation Industries Organization. These upgrades allowed individual drones to lock onto specific sections of the target complex with improved precision.

Multiple direct impacts followed. The warehouse was soon engulfed in flames, later confirmed by NASA fire-mapping satellites. The strike, part of the IRGC’s fourth wave codenamed “Ya Abul-Hassan,” demonstrated the effective combination of Russian real-time intelligence, Chinese resilient navigation, and Iranian swarm coordination.

Drawing on observed improvements in responsiveness and coordination, the end-to-end sequence in this case was compressed to roughly six hours -- a notably short timeline for planning and executing a precision strike against a target nearly a thousand kilometers away.

Why the Attack Worked

The strike on the KGL Transport warehouse helps explain the noticeable improvement in accuracy and coordination displayed by Iranian operations in recent weeks. Viewing these attacks purely through a technological lens obscures their true scope; instead, they represent a deliberate integration of capabilities across every layer of the battlespace. This level of synchronization is best understood through the requirements of modern multi-domain operations.

Simply put, multi-domain operations describe the coordinated use of different military tools across several interconnected layers. These include the electromagnetic spectrum (the invisible radio waves and electronic signals used for communication, radar, and navigation), the air domain (the sky itself, occupied by missiles and drones), unmanned and autonomous systems (drones and robots that operate without a human crew and can communicate with each other), and precision strike assets (long-range weapons designed to hit exact targets such as a specific warehouse roof or fuel tank). The central offensive requirement in high-end warfare is the ability to push through contested or defended airspace in order to strike the high-value nodes that sustain an adversary’s command structure and defensive network.

At its core, the concept treats the battlefield as a single, integrated system rather than a collection of separate domains. It functions much like an NFL goyball team under one head coach:

• The head coach sets the overall game plan and decides how the different units will support each other. • The offensive coordinator runs the offense with its own plays and personnel.
• The defensive coordinator manages the defense with its schemes and matchups.
• The special teams coach handles kickoffs, punts, and returns.• Each unit has its own equipment, formations, and responsibilities, yet none operate in isolation.
• Every decision is made with the larger strategy in mind -- so that a strong defensive stand can improve field position for the offense, or a well-executed punt can pin the opposing team deep.
• The team succeeds when these separate groups are deliberately coordinated rather than acting independently.

The same principle applies here. Actions in one layer are used to create or improve opportunities in another, generating temporary windows that can be exploited before the opponent can respond. Success depends on rapid decision-making, protection of friendly information and guidance links, and the ability to coordinate manned and unmanned platforms as part of a single effort.

This integrated method has become a core requirement of contemporary high-end warfare. The United States formalized its version as Multi-Domain Operations. China developed a more explicitly system-oriented framework through integrated joint operations and multi-domain integrated joint operations, treating warfare as a contest between opposing systems rather than a series of isolated engagements. Russia’s mastery of reconnaissance-strike complexes and highly compressed decision cycles has set a new benchmark for modern warfare. This operational sophisticatedness underscores a vital reality: success depends entirely on the capability to protect guidance links, rapidly update targets, and seamlessly synchronize unmanned systems with precision effects.

Iran has yet to publish a formal public doctrine under the name Multi-Domain Operations or alternative; and given that they’re a bit preoccupied at the moment, it will probably be a while before they do. That absence, obviously, should not be mistaken for absence of the practice itself. To the trained eye, and according to assessments circulating among those with direct insight into recent operations, the principles are being employed with a level of efficiency that can reasonably be considered on par with what superpowers achieve through far more resource-intensive structures. Iran is doing so by leveraging its asymmetric advantages and executing a form of Mosaic offense through this integrated framework -- distributing sensors, shooters, and decision nodes in a way that generates coordinated effects without requiring the heavy, centralized architecture typical of traditional great-power forces. The results in recent weeks speak for themselves.

In mid-July 2026, for example, Iranian forces used precision drones to strike and destroy two US HIMARS rocket launchers in Kuwait that were already set up and ready to fire on targets inside Iran. HIMARS are truck-mounted rocket systems that the US can quickly move into position and prepare for launch, often in under 30 minutes. By locating and hitting these launchers while they were operational, Iran showed it could respond rapidly to mobile strike systems even after they had been deployed and readied for use.

Doctrinal Foundations: United States and China

United States thinking is reflected in the U.S. Army’s Multi-Domain Operations 2028 concept, along with Joint Publication 3-01 on Countering Air and Missile Threats and Joint Publication 3-60 on Joint Targeting. These documents emphasize the need to combine electronic warfare, real-time targeting, and autonomous systems when operating in environments where access is actively contested.

Chinese doctrine offers a parallel but more systematically developed perspective. The Guidelines on Joint Operations of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (Trial), issued by the Central Military Commission in Beijing in November 2020, identify integrated joint operations as the basic form of warfare at every level. Building on that foundation, the Science of Military Strategy (2020 edition), published by the National Defense University in Beijing, develops the concept further, positioning multi-domain integrated joint operations as the concrete form this takes under the conditions of contemporary conflict.

In this framework, warfare is understood as a contest between opposing systems rather than a fight between individual units or platforms.

Modern conflict is largely a contest of network superiority. Rid yourself of the antiquated, boomer-normie idea of a picturesque, “Top Gun” style duel between individual platforms like tanks or aircraft. Victory is decided by whose unified architecture of sensors, shooters, command links, and support systems can out-function the opposing network.

Success depends on achieving information dominance (control of information and communications) through networked command arrangements.

The side that can see more clearly, share information faster, and keep its command network working while

disrupting the opponent’s will hold the decisive advantage.

The goal is to generate cross-domain synergy, coordinated effects across different areas of warfare, in ways that create temporary windows of superiority and then convert detection into destruction through precision strikes.

When every part of the force is linked, a weakness found in one domain (for example, a gap in air defenses or a jammed radar) can be immediately exploited by weapons coming from another domain. Finding the target and hitting it become almost the same step.

Unmanned systems and new-type forces are treated as integral components of this system-of-systems structure rather than as supplementary tools.

“Platform confrontation” means fighting vehicle-against-vehicle or weapon-against-weapon (tank versus tank, plane versus plane, ship versus ship). System confrontation is different: the individual vehicles and weapons are treated only as pieces inside a larger connected network. Drones and autonomous systems are built directly into the foundation of modern military networks rather than being tacked onto older forces as afterthoughts. By weaving these technologies in from the very start, the entire network becomes faster, not to mention highly adaptable, and a pain in the ass to disrupt.

Much has been made of Iran’s now-legendary mosaic strategy, so much so that it is easy to conflate it with the core of multi-domain operations. Not really. They are distinct. Multi-domain operations refer to the underlying ability to protect guidance links, rapidly update targets, and coordinate effects across different layers of the battlespace. Mosaiac Defense is the specific way Iran has chosen to fight -- i.e. distributing sensors, shooters, and decision nodes, etc, so the force can strum up pressure from lots of directions at once without relying on a heavy, centralized structure.

Look at it like this: Multi-domain operations are the foundational operating system, while mosaic defense is a specialized app. You cannot run a high-performance app if the underlying operating system is broken. In the same way, a decentralized mosaic defense only reaches peak effectiveness because the complex problems of multi-domain synchronization have already been solved. Without resilient navigation, or the ability to keep unmanned systems coordinated under pressure. Mosaiac Defense can easily collapse into disconnected attacks. Recent Iranian strikes show that this multi-domain competence now exists in practice. It is visible in the combination of Chinese electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) that preserve the integrity of guidance and communications links, Russian approaches to dynamic targeting that enable rapid adaptation against time-sensitive objectives, and Iranian advances in swarm intelligence that allow coordinated mass to overwhelm defenses while retaining precision. The result is a clear improvement in strike effectiveness, as many who are sympathetic to the resistance have gotten to enjoy.

That diffusion helps explain the position the United States now finds itself in. Iranian command-and-control, air defense, and coastal defense systems have been deliberately built for survivability. Much of America’s prior surveillance capability has been degraded or driven off. As a result, the United States is operating in what can be

described as a force-discovery phase -- an information-gathering phase of trying to figure out Iran’s defenses -- in which it does not yet have a clear, reliable picture of Iranian defenses and must actively gather information while fighting.

This is why many recent U.S. strikes function less as decisive attacks and more as reconnaissance-in-force. The goal is to both inflict damage AND force Iranian systems to react so that American forces can study those reactions. By watching how Iranian radars activate, how quickly missile units respond, how command networks coordinate, and how defenses perform under pressure, the U.S. is slowly piecing together a map of Iranian capabilities. This process continues even while losing drones and facing Iranian counterattacks. While many U.S. strikes may appear random or purely destructive, they are often part of a broader intelligence effort designed to gather information about Iranian capabilities.

The broader significance is difficult to ignore. The same underlying methods are already visible among Iran’s partners in the Axis of Resistance. In the Red Sea, Ansarallah has repeatedly executed coordinated multi-domain attacks on shipping -- most clearly in the July 2025 strikes on the bulk carriers Magic Seas and Eternity C. Those operations combined explosive unmanned surface vessels, anti-ship cruise and ballistic missiles, and armed skiffs in a single converging assault, forcing defenders to deal with surface and air threats simultaneously. In Lebanon, Hezbollah integrates jam-resistant fiber-optic drones with rocket and missile fire to execute layered attacks on Israeli positions, armor, and air-defense batteries. By utilizing these drones simultaneously as precision strikers and real-time spotting assets for follow-on fires, the group demonstrates that advanced multi-domain capabilities—such as link protection, unmanned systems coordination, and cross-domain effects—are no longer exclusive to premier state militaries.

The conflict itself underscores how far the situation has moved from early expectations. What was repeatedly framed in the opening phase as a short operation -- Trump stated in early statements that “I think two or three weeks, yeah, we’ll leave” and described it as something that would be “over in a matter of weeks” -- has now stretched across more than four months. The Strait of Hormuz remains constrained, with commercial traffic still far below pre-war levels amid ongoing friction over routing and security.

Meanwhile, Iranian forces have continued to refine accuracy, targeting selection, and the coordination of multi-axis strikes under sustained pressure. That improvement has been possible because the underlying multi-domain competence -- resilient guidance, rapid retargeting, and the ability to synchronize unmanned systems with precision effects -- has held and, in key respects, advanced. Despite facing intense U.S. and Israeli military pressure (including attempts to degrade early-warning networks and command structures), economic sanctions, and the demands of supporting partners across multiple theaters while operating under contested

conditions, Iran has maintained and enhanced its operational edge.

If Iran has achieved this level of performance in spite of those obstacles, how much more capable will these methods be in another four months? How many additional missiles and drones will be available by then? Can the United States or the wider global economy that still depends on stable energy flows afford that timeline? The eternal “we’ll see”.

“The only people we see in the village stealing our minerals are the Chinese, not the Americans.”

From a conversation with my aunt

This remark has stayed with me because it captures something fundamental about how ordinary Nigerians view the Chinese presence in the country. What she and millions of others do not fully understand, however, is the extent to which this perception has been cultivated, nurtured, and amplified by the American soft power machinery. It is a system designed to turn Nigeria into a battleground of great power competition.

On the surface, anti-China sentiment in Nigeria feels like a natural reaction. Villagers in Zamfara watch foreign miners tear up their land, and workers in Ogun State describe degrading labor conditions inside Chinese-owned factories. In Abuja, a supermarket infamously turned Nigerian shoppers away at the door while continuing to serve Chinese customers inside. These events did happen, and they cannot be ignored. But the way these stories have been highlighted, transformed into an international narrative, and specifically linked to China has not been entirely organic. Western funding, strategic messaging, and domestic political incentives have combined to make China the most visible foreign villain in Nigerian discourse.

This does not excuse Chinese companies from responsibility. Nigerian workers and communities have suffered real abuses tied to Chinese-linked mines and factories, and those harms deserve clear condemnation and meaningful remedies. What has shifted in recent years is the disproportionate focus on Chinese violations compared to similar misconduct involving domestic or Western firms. There is a relentless amplification of incidents involving Chinese nationals, framing China as uniquely predatory while other foreign actors often escape similar scrutiny. This unnatural emphasis points to a systematic effort to manufacture and weaponize anti-China sentiment in Nigeria.

Money Can’t Buy Happiness, but It Sure Can Buy Propaganda

The weaponization of anti-China sentiment is underpinned by a substantial financial machinery. According to a June 2026 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, this apparatus has directed at least $1.6 billion since fiscal year 2020 toward initiatives aimed at countering Chinese influence abroad. Administered through the State Department and USAID, this anti-China funding is distributed across various accounts, including Development Assistance, the Economic Support Fund, and International Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement.

In September 2024, the House passed H.R. 1157, known as the Countering the PRC Malign Influence Fund Authorization Act. It is worth being precise about what that means.

The $1.6 billion already spent since fiscal year 2020 is separate money. It was appropriated year by year through the ordinary budget process and predated H.R. 1157 entirely. The bill would have made that spending permanent and harder to touch; instead, it died in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when that session of Congress concluded on January 3, 2025.

Despite the bill never becoming law, the funding streams persist. This renders the full financial picture opaque by design.

On the ground, this funding does not openly declare, “We are paying you to hate China.” There are no billboards on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway bearing the words, “Beware of the Chinese devil.” The mechanism is much quieter. It finances independent media and investigative journalism to expose Chinese economic practices. It underwrites campaigns that challenge Chinese state narratives about infrastructure projects and trade deals.

If you want to propose an anti-corruption project today, language about “opaque Chinese loans” and “Beijing-backed elites” resonates far more with Western donors than talk of environmental pollution from Shell or IMF-dictated taxation. If you want to build an audience, a global network stands ready to retweet and repost anything featuring a “China Bad” headline.

But How Does It Work?

How does this play out in practice? Let us explore the key players and see how these financial pipelines shape Nigerian conversations in real time.

The Anti-China Journalism Network

Consider a concrete example. In February 2022, journalist Lukman Abolade published a detailed investigation for the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) titled, “Nigerian government watches as Chinese companies violate labour laws, workers’ rights.” The story meticulously documented deaths, eye injuries, and child labor in Chinese-owned quarries across Ogun State.

At the bottom of that article, in surprisingly bold print, sits this explicit disclosure:

“This story was produced with the support of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in collaboration with the International Republican Institute (IRI), through the ‘Countering Malign Foreign Influence’ project.”

This is as transparent an example as you will find. The story names the project outright. The International Republican Institute (IRI) is a core grantee of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), which receives its funding directly from the U.S. Congress.

This single case highlights how American government-funded intermediaries, operating through layered distribution channels, directly underwrite investigative journalism in Nigeria that targets the economic practices of Chinese nationals.

The Layered Pipeline

The money moves in a straight line, even if it looks like a maze from the ground up:

Congress ➔ State Department/USAID ➔ NED ➔ IRI ➔ CDD ➔ Nigerian Journalists

• Step 1: Congress allocates capital through expansive omnibus spending bills.

• Step 2: The State Department, leveraging units like the Global Engagement Center, funnels resources into strategic toolkits designed to map and counter foreign information manipulation.

The influence network extends beyond single assignments to encompass entire media operations, helping foster an ecosystem of Western-backed domestic outlets that consistently highlight anti-China beats.

For instance, Sahara Reporters, one of Nigeria’s most influential investigative platforms, secured substantial support between 2016 and 2019, including $175,000 from the Ford Foundation, $450,000 from the Omidyar Network, and $1.3 million from the MacArthur Foundation.

Against this backdrop, it is logical that in April 2023, Sahara Reporters gave prominent placement to a headline reading, “Chinese Government Reacts To Report Of Funding Terror Groups To Access Nigerian Mineral Resources.” The piece amplified a UK Times investigation alleging that Chinese miners were paying protection money to Boko Haram and ISWAP. Sahara Reporters did not originate the claim, but its well-endowed platform granted the narrative massive traction across the Nigerian digital ecosystem.

Media operations dependent on Western grants quickly realize that documenting Chinese malfeasance is an eminently fundable endeavor. When you strip away the bureaucratic jargon, the mechanism is brilliantly simple: the U.S. government structures the financial conduits, backs regional intermediaries, trains local reporters, and allows the narrative to bloom naturally from genuine, carefully highlighted local grievances.

The Selective Spotlight

Why does this matter? Labor abuses in Chinese-owned factories in Ogun State are thoroughly documented, rigorously investigated, and widely broadcast. Yet no one is running that same playbook on Western corporate entities.

When multinational giants like Shell, ExxonMobil, Chevron, ENI, and TotalEnergies moved to divest from their onshore Niger Delta assets to exit the region, they left behind decades of contaminated water and poisoned farmland with virtually no comprehensive cleanup frameworks or genuine local restitution. Yet that monumental crisis barely caused a ripple in the mainstream media discourse.

This is not because Nigerian civil society is indifferent to oil company exploitation. It is because there is no Countering Western Malign Influence Fund. There is no 1.6 billion dollar program to investigate ExxonMobil or Shell. The financial architecture that dictates which investigations get greenlit in Nigeria was deliberately assembled by a foreign government with a vested interest in shaping how Nigerians perceive Beijing. Unsurprisingly, no parallel apparatus exists to interrogate the actions of the West.

None of this implies that Nigeria’s issues with certain Chinese operators are fictional. They are entirely real. What remains carefully engineered, however, is the choice of who faces the regulatory and media firing squad and who receives a pass. The same billion-dollar machine that determined Chinese investments require forensic moral scrutiny has never turned its lens on the Western oil majors that have spent nearly a century draining the ground beneath our feet.

Those stories remain largely ignored, waiting silently for someone with the right grant to notice them.

Since breaking ground on a multi-billion dollar luxury resort in Albania, the Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump-led project has done more to reveal a corrupt Zionist pay-for-play scheme than it has to shed light on one of the jewels of the Earth that had gone unnoticed until it fell into the hands of the pair of real estate scions, at least as their recounting of the tale of how it came into their purview would have others believe. After protests initially overran the construction sites of the development across Albania’s Adriatic coast, that civil unrest against the project amplified to such an extent that over 100,000 Albanians took to the streets of their nation’s capital, Tirana, as part of a civilian-initiated referendum against the resort. The movement, which has become known as the “Flamingo Revolution” due to the protected wildlife on Sazan Island and the adjacent Albanian mainland coast jeopardized by the Kushner-backed project, has led the country’s largest protests since the fall of communism in Albania during the early 1990s. After that civil unrest proved to be enough to effectuate an investigation led by Albania’s anti-corruption task force; the early revelations from that inquiry have already put the project’s future into doubt, a development that threatens to turn the development from a luxury resort idealized as a city upon a hill into a castle made of sand being swept into the sea.

Albania’s anti-corruption investigators have turned their attention to Miami-based businessman Artur Shehu as their probe has gone underway. Investigators have zeroed in on Shehu, who sold property that he owned on Albania’s Adriatic coast to the Kushner-led company Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC, and his associates due to links they allege exist between them and an international drug trafficking ring and suspicions that the real estate empire Shehu amassed that he was able to profit from through his sale to Kushner was built through forged property records. Although Shehu’s lawyer, Kujtim Cakrani, issued a statement on behalf of his client denying all of the accusations made against him by Albania’s Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (”SPAK”), Cakrani also acknowledged that the country’s anti-corruption agency has issued a warrant for Shehu’s arrest on charges that he has laundered money for drug gangs.

SPAK alleges that Shehu used the profits he and his associates made from trafficking cocaine into Europe from South America to build his real estate empire. Albania’s anti-corruption prosecutors go on to allege that Shehu falsified land-ownership documents in order to launder that money through his real estate holdings. As a result of those allegations, prosecutors have frozen roughly 110 million euros tied to the sale of the property.

Although SPAK made no direct allegations against Kushner or any of the businesses he helms behind the development of the Sazan Island luxury resort, the accusations made against Shehu are not the first to threaten one of Kushner’s real estate projects. In December 2025, just weeks before the company behind the Sazan Island project, Atlantic Incubation Partners LLC, was awarded strategic investor status by the Albanian government, Kushner’s investment firm Affinity Partners announced that it had withdrawn itself from a $500 million construction project it planned in Serbia over another anti-corruption probe making similar allegations. Affinity Partners had planned to build a Trump Tower complex encompassing a hotel and luxury apartments in central Belgrade on the site of a former Yugoslavian Army headquarters that was destroyed during a NATO bombing raid in 1999 during the Kosovo War. However, that project fell apart after Serbian Culture Minister Nikola Selakovic and three other officials were indicted on charges of abuse of office and falsification of documents filed by the country’s Public Prosecution Office for Organized Crime (”TOK”).

Like the Albanian SPAK’s allegations against Shehu, the Serbian TOK alleged that falsified records were essential to Kushner’s development of the property. Before pulling out of the project after Selakovic and his accomplices were indicted, Affinity Partners agreed to a 99-year lease on the site of the proposed Trump Tower complex with the Serbian government. TOK alleged that lease was only made possible after Selakovic illegally removed the cultural heritage status protecting the property, which kept the deal with Affinity Partners from being finalized. In the wake of the charges made against Selakovic, Affinity Partners denied any connection to allegations made against him. When announcing their withdrawal from the $500 million project in the heart of Belgrade, a spokesperon for Kushner’s investment firm issued a statement saying, “Meaningful projects should unite rather than divide,” and that it would be ending the project out of respect for the people of Serbia and the city of Belgrade.

Less than one year later, Kushner finds himself trying to distance his company’s links to the same kind of criminal allegations. However, no spokesman for Kushner or any of his companies has yet to address the allegations made against Shehu. While the charges made against Shehu by SPAK have only now come to light in the shadow of the controversy miring the Sazan Island resort’s development, the land he sold to Kushner to make the project possible has been under scrutiny for years. Residents of the Albanian village of Zvërnec, near one of the construction sites of the development, have filed court cases against Shehu for over a decade claiming they are the rightful owners of the land he sold to Kushner. Villagers of Zvërnec united against Shehu revealed property deeds and tax records in support of their claim to the land. After learning it had been sold to Kushner’s Sazan Island resort project by Shehu, one villager named Kostaq Konomi stated, “I was ready to get a rifle and start shooting,” continuing, “I was a small boy when I put my feet in that water. Now I am an old man and they say I cannot.” Kostandin Beko, the lawyer representing those villagers, said that cases his clients have filed against Shehu remain open. On that basis, Beko says his clients plan to seek a court order to halt the development of the resort.

Questions surrounding the development of the Sazan Island luxury resort aren’t limited to Shehu and others connected to Kushner mired in SPAK’s anti-corruption probe. After beginning construction on the project, Kushner touted how it was made possible by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. Kushner used the example of the instrumental force that Rama played in advancing the project as an example of a strategy led by Affinity Partners and other companies under its wing to expand the sphere of influence of the State of Israel. When discussing that strategy, Kushner stated, “We’re looking at opportunities to invest in countries who have joined the Abraham Accords, but we’re also looking at opportunities to invest in countries that might join the Abraham Accords and to create economic packages to incentivize them.” Kushner and his associates have set their sights on Morocco, Syria, and beyond to bring other nations into the fold in support of expanding agreements like the Abraham Accords to further consolidate Israel’s power in the Middle East.

Although the admitted strategy of using the $6 billion-plus of assets under management belonging to Affinity Partners to advance Israel’s interests is not part of the anti-corruption probe into the Sazan Island luxury resort, it highlights the impetus behind what is driving the mission led by Kushner and his associates as well as the level of political capital they wield at their disposal in order to achieve it. What remains to be seen is whether that political and financial capital will be enough to overcome the Albanians united against Kushner and his associates who seek to bring an end to their incursion into their homeland.

The law empowers the State Council and Central Military Commission to decide and carry out such measures, reporting directly to the NPC Standing Committee. This framework has guided CPC leadership's Taiwan policy without deviation and has been consistently reinforced in successive white papers and edicts under the leadership of my GOAT, my President, my greatest inspiration, Comrade Xi Jinping.

The Taiwan Strait -- shallow waters and proximity that heavily favor PLA amphibious and missile operations.

For three decades the PRC has pursued determined, systematic modernization of the heroic People's Liberation Army to strengthen its sacred ability to safeguard national reunification -- by force if the terroristic separatist provocations and external imperialist interference leave no other choice. The PLA now fields the world's largest navy by number of hulls. U.S. Department of Defense assessments and CSIS analyses confirm the PLAN currently operates over 370 vessels, with projections reaching roughly 395 by 2025 and 435 by 2030, compared to the U.S. Navy's roughly 290--300 battle force ships. This force includes advanced Type 055 destroyers and cruisers, Type 052D destroyers, Type 054A and 056 frigates and corvettes, nuclear and conventional submarines such as the Type 094 Jin-class SSBNs and Type 093 Shang-class SSNs, and powerful amphibious lift from Type 075 LHDs and Type 071 LPDs.

China's world-leading shipbuilding capacity provides the solid industrial foundation. Accounting for approximately 50--70%+ of global commercial shipbuilding tonnage in recent years, major state-linked yards including Jiangnan, Hudong-Zhonghua, Dalian, and Guangzhou are capable of constructing multiple large warships simultaneously. Overall Chinese shipbuilding capacity stands at roughly 200--230 times that of the United States. Between 2019 and 2023 alone, the four largest shipyards delivered 39 warships totaling 550,000 tonnes of displacement, ensuring rapid fleet growth and sustained combat readiness.

Type 055 destroyer -- a symbol of the PLAN's rapid rise to the world's largest navy by hull count.

PLA doctrinal literature firmly emphasizes amphibious operations in defense of national reunification. The concept of the Joint Island Landing Campaign is laid out in key texts, including the 2006 Science of Campaigns and the authoritative 2020 Science of Military Strategy edited by Xiao Tianliang at the National Defense University Press. These works detail multi-domain joint operations that combine naval, ground, air, and missile forces, employing amphibious mechanized brigades equipped with Type 05/ZBD-05 vehicles to seize beachheads and rapidly exploit success inland. Reforms since 2017 reorganized PLA Ground Force amphibious units into combined-arms brigades optimized for these missions, while the expansion of the PLA Navy Marine Corps has added strong support, though the primary role continues to rest with the Ground Forces.

Official white papers further underscore this resolute defense of sovereignty. The 2015 China's Military Strategy white paper highlights the strategic shift toward a maritime orientation -- 'offshore waters defense' combined with 'open seas protection' -- and affirms Taiwan's central place in national reunification. The 2019 China's National Defense in the New Era white paper declares boldly, beautifully and bravely! with unmistakable clarity:

"We make no promise to renounce the use of force, and reserve the option of taking all necessary measures... The PLA will resolutely defeat anyone attempting to separate Taiwan from China and safeguard national unity at all costs."

The 'Hellscape' Delusion and China's Unstoppable Path to Reunification

The latest desperate terror plot from the crumbling U.S. war machine and its think-tank fantasists is called 'Hellscape,' a concept being pushed through the Pentagon, State Department, and Department of War to somehow prevent China from reuniting with Taiwan. Some American analysts and generals are trying to sell the notion that flooding the Taiwan Strait with cheap drones and mines will turn it into an impassable graveyard for the heroic PLA. It sounds dramatic on paper. In reality, it is little more than the latest pathetic terroristic fantasy by warmongers who refuse to accept that the military balance has already shifted decisively in China's favor.

The idea was first floated publicly by U.S. Indo-Pacific Command chief Admiral Samuel Paparo in June 2024. He centered his pitch around turning the Taiwan Strait into an 'unmanned hellscape' that would make life miserable for Chinese forces for roughly a month. Later, a February 2026 report from the Center for a New American Security attempted to dress the concept up as a serious Taiwanese self-defense plan. The authors, Stacie Pettyjohn and Molly Campbell, basically repackaged the old 'porcupine strategy' with heavy use of drones -- similar to what they claim proved effective in Iran -- and gave it a new name.

They can call it whatever they like. It still does not change the fundamental problem: this entire approach rests on wishful thinking and a complete misunderstanding of both geography and China's actual capabilities.

China has no intention of playing along with this drone-heavy terror scenario. Beijing's approach is far more direct and far more effective. The heroic PLA's plan centers on massive preemptive strikes using ballistic and cruise missiles to destroy Taiwanese airfields, ports, radar sites, command centers, and suspected drone launch areas right at the outset. DF-17 hypersonic missiles launched from road-mobile platforms positioned in concealed locations along the massive 1,500 km+ span of China's east coast -- hugging cliffs, caves, and canyons -- will leave defenses guessing and reacting too late. At the same time, Chinese submarines and fast mine-laying ships would rapidly turn the shallow waters of the Taiwan Strait into a death trap for any approaching Western terror vessels or proxy forces.

DF-17 hypersonic missiles -- road-mobile systems enabling rapid, concealed preemptive strikes along China's eastern seaboard.

Geography works heavily against the Western fantasy. The Taiwan Strait is not deep ocean. In many places it is only around 60 meters deep. That makes it incredibly difficult for large American nuclear submarines to operate effectively, while China's diesel-electric submarines are far better suited for this shallow, confined environment. They can sit quietly on the seabed and wait. Mines are also much harder to clear in these conditions. Any attempt to maintain a constant swarm of drones would be extremely vulnerable to Chinese electronic warfare, jamming, and preemptive missile attacks.

This is not theoretical. The same digital 'kill web' that defeated advanced U.S. electronic jamming in the 2023 South China Sea incident -- where an AI-powered radar network successfully countered the EA-18G Growler's jamming arrays, prompting the U.S. Navy to relieve the squadron commander -- could neutralize a Taiwanese 'Hellscape' swarm. China's integrated system uses AI to synchronize multi-angle, high-powered jamming across a vast grid, severing drone communication links while simultaneously processing data from diverse sensors to see through electronic defenses and deploy the most efficient countermeasures without being overwhelmed by numbers.

Why the Layered Defense Fantasy Collapses

Even the much-hyped 'layered defense' promoted by Taipei and Washington collapses under realistic scrutiny once China begins operations in a full-scale contingency.

The outer layer -- long-range strikes against Chinese amphibious groups while they are still assembling near the mainland -- rests almost entirely on U.S. and Taiwanese long-range drones and anti-ship missiles. These would primarily come from MQ-9B Reapers and future attritable drones operating from bases in the Philippines and Guam, LRASM missiles launched from U.S. submarines in the Philippine Sea or from B-21 and B-1 bombers staging out of Guam and Australia, and a limited number of ground-launched systems from southern Taiwan. In practice, this layer would be shattered long before most platforms could reach effective launch positions. China's integrated air defense network -- combining HQ-9B, S-400 systems, J-20 fighters armed with PL-17 missiles, and the dense DF-21D and DF-26 anti-ship ballistic missile batteries positioned along the Fujian and Guangdong coasts -- would destroy or jam the majority of these assets while they are still hundreds of kilometers away. American forces would also be heavily distracted by simultaneous Chinese pressure across the second island chain and potential coordination with Russia in the Arctic and northern Pacific.

The middle layer -- relying on dense minefields across the Taiwan Strait combined with medium-range loitering munitions and drones -- is equally brittle. Taiwan could attempt to sow thousands of mines using its indigenous systems and U.S.-supplied Mk 67 and Quickstrike mines delivered by aircraft or submarines. Medium-range drone attacks would likely involve U.S. Replicator Initiative attritable systems and Switchblade 600-class loitering munitions launched from hidden sites in central and northern Taiwan. However, the People's Liberation Army can lay defensive and offensive minefields far faster using converted roll-on/roll-off ships, Type 726 amphibious vessels, and even civilian vessels under military control. At the same time, China's powerful electronic warfare units -- operating from the mainland, airborne platforms, and naval task forces -- would systematically jam and spoof the GPS and data links these drones require. The result would be large numbers of expensive Western drones either lost or forced into predictable flight paths where they become easy targets for China's layered short-range air defenses and directed-energy systems.

By the time any remaining forces reach the final approach layer -- the attempt to hit Chinese landing craft with short-range weapons in the last few kilometers -- the battle would already be largely decided. Taiwan's remaining coastal defense systems (Hsiung Feng II and III truck-mounted missiles, truck artillery, and small drone swarms) would face the full weight of China's pre-landing and landing support firepower. This would include massed salvos of PHL-16 and PCL-191 rocket artillery, short-range ballistic missiles, helicopter gunships operating from the mainland and from Type 075 LHDs, and precision naval gunfire from close-in destroyers and frigates. With Taiwanese command nodes, airfields, and ammunition depots already heavily degraded by earlier waves of DF-17, DF-26, and cruise missile strikes, the volume of fire Taiwan could actually bring to bear in those final kilometers would be a fraction of what planners assume on paper.

Even if some forces managed to get ashore, China's ability to reinforce quickly across the narrow strait would overwhelm any remaining defenders. The entire concept assumes Taiwan can sustain a high-tech defensive network under heavy attack. That assumption is extremely optimistic.

Type 075 LHD -- critical amphibious lift that enables rapid reinforcement across the narrow Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan's Practical and Strategic Vulnerabilities

Even on paper, this strategy has serious issues for Taiwan itself. To make it work, Taiwan would need to massively increase its drone production, possibly to around 180,000 units per year. That would require shifting money away from big-ticket items like submarines and fighter jets. There is already resistance inside Taiwan's military establishment to moving fully toward this kind of asymmetric approach. Past efforts to adopt similar strategies have been half-hearted at best.

More importantly, any serious attempt to activate this kind of defense on a large scale would almost certainly be seen by Beijing as direct support for Taiwan independence. That would likely trigger a much wider and more destructive conflict than the limited operation some Western planners seem to imagine.

China's Position: Clear, Firm, and Irreversible

In July 2026, the PLA Navy carried out a submarine-launched ballistic missile test into the Pacific, demonstrating its growing sea-based nuclear deterrent. At the same time, it was conducting joint naval exercises with Russia. China has also poured resources into underwater surveillance systems across the first and second island chains, along with advanced anti-submarine technology, including new drone-mounted quantum sensors that can detect stealth submarines more effectively.

These are not theoretical developments. They are real, ongoing improvements that directly address the kind of scenarios the West keeps dreaming up.

President Xi Jinping has set a clear and firm target for the People's Liberation Army. By 2027, the centenary of the PLA's founding, it must be ready to achieve reunification if necessary. This is not some vague goal. It is a serious benchmark that reflects China's determination to end the separation once and for all.

Even American intelligence has been forced to acknowledge this reality. Back in 2023, CIA Director William Burns admitted publicly that U.S. intelligence assesses Xi has instructed the PLA to be ready by 2027 to resolve the Taiwan issue successfully. American officials tried to soften the statement by claiming it was only a readiness target, not a fixed invasion date. But the admission itself shows they understand the balance of power has changed.

The simple truth is this: no amount of drone terror fantasies or layered defense concepts from the imperialist camp will change the fundamental reality. China has the industrial capacity, the geographic advantages, the unbreakable political will, and the growing military strength to achieve reunification. The West and its terroristic proxies can keep publishing reports and holding conferences about turning the Taiwan Strait into a 'hellscape.' In the end, it will not matter.

The historical tide is moving in one direction -- toward the complete reunification of the motherland. And it is not the direction the terrorist-backed warmongers in Washington want.

Under the leadership of Comrade Xi Jinping, the PLA is advancing steadily toward the 2027 readiness benchmark for national reunification.

An April, 2026 online article posted by Jacobin (which is considered one of the foremost socialist online publications) cannot help but adopt a tone of irascibility regarding the leader of the West African nation of Burkina Faso: “Ibrahim Traoré Would Like to Be Thomas Sankara’s Heir.” Authored by Bettina Engels, a Professor of Political Science from Berlin, the Jacobin piece serves as a follow-up to her original article for Review of African Political Economy, “More pragmatic than socialist: Burkina Faso’s recent politics is no remake of Sankarism.”

As the Amerikan empire and its allies lash out at sovereign nations throughout the Global South on a weekly basis (see Iran, Venezuela, and Caribbean fishermen), Engels and Jacobin have calculated that their platforms are best utilized launching critiques at one of Africa’s most popular revolutionary movements.

Why is it that, just as Traoré is fighting off multiple attempted military coups, these so-called ‘leftists’ feel the need to make such claims about the supposed illegitimacy of the current phase of the Burkinabè Revolution? Why do Engels and Jacobin so eagerly delineate the Burkina Faso of Traoré as something that has betrayed the original sentiments of so-called ‘Sankarism?’ Why does this narrative persist among ‘leftists’ in the West despite the concrete material gains achieved by the Burkinabè people since 2022?

• 2023: The new administration begins rolling out its Offensive agro-pastorale et halieutique 2023–2025 (Agricultural and Fisheries Offensive of 2023-2025) to promote food sovereignty.

• Jan. 2023: Traoré’s government expels the French embassy from the country, referring to France as an ‘imperialist state.’

• Feb. 2023: All French military personnel are forced to leave Burkina Faso after 13 years of operating in the country.

• Jul.-Sep. 2023: The Alliance of the Sahel States (AES) is formed in conjunction with Mali and Niger, setting the course for an independent, anti-colonial movement in West Africa.

• Aug. 2024: The first steps are taken to nationalize the country’s mining/mineral industry, the main natural source of Burkina Faso’s material wealth—two of the nation’s largest gold mines were nationalized during this first phase. We note here that Burkina Faso is the world’s 13th-largest producer of gold, while remaining one of the poorest countries in the poorest region of Africa.

• Apr. 2025: The first wide-scale assassination and regime change plot against the Traoré and his administration is undertaken by Ivory Coast-based militia groups and former Burkinabè military personnel. The attack comes just two weeks after AFRICOM Commander Michael Langley testified before the US Senate Armed Services Committee, declaring Traoré a threat to US national security because of the nationalization of Burkina Faso’s precious mineral wealth. As reported by MintPress News, the Amerikan Embassy changed its travel guidelines to “do not travel” regarding Burkina Faso just before the coup attempt; Langley also met with the Defense Minister of the Ivory Coast both before and after the insurgency.

• Jun. 2025: The second wave of mine naturalizations expels French colonialists from five more of the largest gold mines in Burkina Faso. Shortly afterward, all rural land is nationalized for the purpose of agricultural development that serves the Burkinabè people.

• Jan. 2026: Another large coup attempt is foiled by the Traoré administration. Burkinabès took to the streets en masse to demonstrate their support for Traoré and the revolutionary government immediately following the failed regime change effort. People’s Dispatch notes that “to the West on Burkina Faso’s southern border is Togo – home to ‘the principal actor’ [in] this plot, Burkina Faso’s former Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Damiba,” who was ousted by Traoré during the popular uprising of 2022.

• Mar. 2026: Burkina Faso launches its $65 billion National Development Plan with the principal goal of regaining total control of the country from jihadist and terrorist groups. (As Business Insider Africa notes, “despite security challenges, the government has expanded control of national territory from 69% in 2023 to 73.56% by late 2025.” ‘Security challenges’ is a rather misleading term used to describe being under siege by Western-backed jihadist military forces.)

• Jun. 2026: The AES announces the launching of the Union of Territorial Collectivities, a regional initiative designed to promote collaboration and solidarity among the indigenous villages of the Sahel States.

• Jul. 2026: The Burkinabe government inaugurates its first completely state-owned gold mine in the municipality of Yako, which is “expected to produce more than seven tons of gold over the next 15 years while creating more than 1,200 direct and indirect jobs.”

Despite all this, Engels maintains that “the question remains as to what alternative idea of democracy and political rule Traoré and the MPSR 2 [Traoré’s party] represent. So far, they seem to rely rather on what is often referred to as output or performance legitimacy (legitimacy based on answering the basic demands of the population and improving material living conditions).”

In other words, to Engels and the Jacobin ‘Left,’ the new phase of the Burkinabè Revolution, while resulting in immediate material gains and indubitably responding to some of the most dire needs of its citizenry, is nevertheless at best worth a sort of apathetic ambivalence from their Western audience. Why do they come to this conclusion?

From the Cold War period onward, the Amerikan empire has achieved the imposition upon much of the Western world a phenomenon which Cuban-American Communist and Professor of Philosophy labels the ‘Purity Fetish.’ In his book The Purity Fetish and the Crisis of Western Marxism, Garrido critiques Western ‘leftists’’ inability to come to the realization that:

Socialism is not ‘betrayed’ when it, encountering the external and internal pressures of imperialism and a national bourgeois class, is forced to take more so-called ‘authoritarian’ positions to protect the revolution. Socialism is not ‘betrayed’ or transformed into ‘state capitalism’ (in the derogatory, non-Leninist sense) when faced with a backwards economy it takes the risk of tarrying with its opposite and engages a process of opening up to foreign capital to develop its productive forces. The ‘authoritarian’ moment, or the moment of ‘opening up to foreign capital,’ are not an annihilating negation of socialism—as Western Marxists would have you believe—but the sublation of the idealistic conceptions of a ‘pure’ socialism, especially in its earliest stages… The ‘authoritarianism’ that the Western Marxist’s purity fetish condemns is in every instance a necessary component to protect a revolution’s sovereignty and socialist democracy.1

In a similar vein, Italian Marxist militant Domenico Losurdo dubs this tendency the “bifurcation of two Marxisms.” In his seminal book, Western Marxism: How it was Born, How it Died, and How it Can be Reborn, Losurdo outlines “how different socioeconomic contexts and varying cultural traditions contributed to bifurcating the Marxisms in the West and the East.” Indeed, as he points out, there “should not be any contradictions between Western Marxism and Eastern Marxism. We are dealing with two different perspectives on the same social system, each taking off from Lenin’s analyses [which in turn had built upon Marx’s]. In other words, two struggles for recognition called into question imperialism-capitalism.”2

In practice, we can see that there are indeed contradictions between the development of Marxism and ‘progressive’ politics of Western and Eastern countries. Western ‘leftists’ regularly disparage these differences as ‘impurities’ or ‘inefficacies’ of revolutionary movements abroad, especially those of the Global South. In doing so, they remain blind to or willfully ignorant of the political context surrounding the actions taken by these movements.

The purity fetish and the misunderstanding of Marxism by Western ‘leftists’ is due, in large part, to the failure to grasp the essence of imperialism as it was initially laid out by Lenin in 1916-’17. Domenico Losurdo explains that “if, in the West, communism and Marxism are the truth and the weapon to end war and pull it up by the roots, in the East, communism and Marxism-Leninism are the truth and the ideological weapon to end a situation of oppression and being ‘looked down upon’ by colonialism and imperialism.”3

This distinction is highlighted in another example cited by Losurdo of Ho Chi Minh’s 1923 comments on Marxism: “Marx built his doctrine on a certain philosophy of history. What history? That of Europe. But what is Europe? It is not humanity in its entirety.”4 Through the poignant declarations of anti-colonial leaders of the Global South such as Ho, we can see that Losurdo’s mapping of the bifurcation of the two Marxisms leads to a definitive conclusion: at the core of the philosophy of ‘Eastern’ Marxism is the two-pronged struggle against imperialism and colonialism, a crucial aspect of a revolutionary movement that is often lacking (or altogether absent) in Western Marxist movements.

Garrido, for his part, separates the Western ‘left’ from those revolutionary movements of the East with the following analysis:

According to the orthodox view (which was reformed by Marx and Engels in posthumously published manuscripts) where capitalism was most developed, i.e., Western Europe and the US, was where socialism was to first arrive. Yet, the first successful revolution took root in Russia (the ‘weakest link’) and then in China, Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, and other countries from the third world. The colonial, semi-colonial, and semi-feudal conditions in these areas forces these socialist projects to focus on developing a strong state (to defend against aggression and secure sovereignty) and the forces of production sciences, and technology (to raise living standards and shrink global inequality).5

It is not, then, the so-called modern republics of the US and Europe that represent the objectively superior material gains in the struggle against capitalist imperialism. It was first and foremost the peasant and working-class uprisings of Russia, China, Korea, Vietnam, and Cuba which acted as the catalysts for profound and fundamental changes in society to the benefit of the working class majority.

But to many of even the most ‘progressive’ Westerners, “the success [of socialism] in the East, because it has been impure, is deemed a failure, [and] the failure in the West, because purity has been sustained, is deemed a success.” In this way, “the purity the Western Marxists seek to keep their idea of socialism in is to the detriment of the truth of socialism itself.”6 This is the reality that many Westerners who claim to be on the Left fail to recognize—and it is this crucial message which is at the core of Garrido and Losurdo’s work.

While Burkina Faso’s revolutionary movements have never followed an explicitly Marxist-Leninist program, we can use the above theory to demonstrate that Engels and her colleagues plainly exhibit the hallmarks of the Western purity fetish in their analysis of the current phase of the country’s revolution under Traoré.

So begins Jacobin’s article by questioning “whether a military government can be the alternative, and whether the ends justify the means.” Absent is the acknowledgement that before Traoré took power in Burkina Faso, jihadist terrorist groups were estimated to have controlled almost half of the country’s land; if the basic question of the basic right to self-determination of the Burkinabè people over their natural resources is being actively denied, how is anything less than a military response warranted? These complexities seem to fall dead at the feet of such ‘leftists’ as Engels and those at Jacobin who platform her analysis.

Groups such as Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM—which perpetrates the vast majority of the violence in Burkina Faso today), are tied directly to Al-Qaeda, the international terrorist organization proven to be linked to the vast labyrinth of Amerikan intelligence, military/defense personnel and private contractors. Works such as journalist Max Blumenthal’s The Management of Savagery: How America’s National Security State Fueled the Rise of Al Qaeda, ISIS, and Donald Trump explore this phenomenon, relying on primary sources and interviews from ex-government officials and experts within the international community. Indeed, a different article in Engels’ Review of African Political Economy by Jeffrie Quarsie, “Is France Funding Terrorism in the Sahel?” highlights the disturbing correlation between French military presence and the 2000% increase in jihadist terrorist violence between 2007 and 2022. These facts apparently warrant no consideration in Engels’ analysis.

What most Western critics willingly gloss over is the fact that Traoré’s administration (as well as the greater AES alliance) is actively moving away from Western military aid due to strictly the anti-imperialist character of its movement. Traoré and leaders allied with him recognize that, just as Sankara stated four decades ago, “[Western] welfare and aid policies have only ended up disorganizing us, subjugating us, and robbing us of a sense of responsibility for our own economic, political, and cultural affairs.”7

Instead of interpreting the Traoré administration’s ‘authoritarian’ or ‘pragmatic’ measures with this context in mind, Engels accuses him of appropriating “anti-French sentiment, which had increased since 2019, and [using] it to generate support for his government.” Instead of leading his people against a foreign colonizing force, Traoré’s role is reduced to simply taking advantage of the already existing anti-colonial tendencies for what are construed as undemocratic purposes. For Engels, the refusal to address the political context that exists in Burkina Faso works to the benefit of her analysis that Traoré and the current phase of the Burkinabè Revolution are decidedly undemocratic and therefore must be condemned.

We must recognize that the anti-French sentiment which Engels accuses Traoré of exploiting has been present throughout Burkina Faso since the 1980s, and in greater West Africa for much longer; it is not a new phenomenon by any means, and to imply it is in some way unjustifiable or coincidental is to ignore more than a century of evidence to the contrary. With this in mind, one can begin to question why the politico-economic transformations taking place in the Sahel today should be labeled as ‘authoritarian’ at all—for whom, exactly, are they ‘authoritarian?’ If Burkina Faso under Traoré is ‘authoritarian,’ how shall we describe the centuries-long war of oppression waged by Western European colonialist elite against the people of Africa?

Nowhere in Engels’ observations is there the notion that perhaps—as the brutal legacy of Western European imperialism shows—the US and France’s military involvement in the Sahel does not serve the interests of the Burkinabè people; it is rather very much to the contrary. Unmentioned in both articles is the fact that Western nations have a monstrous record when it comes to effective counterterrorism campaigns via AFRICOM, the international colonial military machine, operating primarily out of Western Europe but spearheaded by the US. Multiple reports have shown that the increase in foreign military activity in West Africa is directly correlated with the sharp rise in terrorist violence.

By applying a purity fetishist lens to her analysis of the Burkina Faso Revolution, Engels shifts the focus of the reader away from the fundamental achievements of the Burkinabè working class under Traoré—much of which do indeed echo the popular policies of Sankara’s time—and towards unequivocally condemning the uncomfortable (for Westerners, that is) possibility of the US/French-backed liberal hegemony being existentially threatened in West Africa. As such, the remaining chapters of this project will be dedicated to dissecting some of the specific accusations leveled at Traoré and the Burkina Faso Revolution.

Although the tenor of anti-establishment rhetoric has transcended from the fringes of the public discourse on American politics into its mainstream, the era defined by that shift has yet to materialize in any meaningful change in the system defining how the U.S. government operates. While the ascent of Donald J. Trump to the United States presidency in 2016 had initially been envisioned as the point of demarcation marking the triumph of populism in U.S. politics, that dream turned into a nightmare following a first term that supporters viewed as sabotaged by America’s political and social elite. Not yet halfway into Trump’s second term, the narrative surrounding that phantasmagoria has become even more haunting, as longtime supporters of the 45th and now 47th President of the United States have begun to feel they were sold a false bill of goods. Instead of reining in the establishment of Permanent Washington, which Trump campaigned on defeating, the president has increasingly become assimilated by that political class.

Perhaps no better example of the Washington establishment that Trump has failed to decapitate exists than Kentucky senior citizen — err, senior senator — Mitch McConnell. McConnell, who has represented the Bluegrass State in the U.S. Senate for over forty years since 1985, is the utter embodiment of the political class Trump demonized for holding America hostage from Capitol Hill. While McConnell has cemented a political legacy that saw him become the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history by serving in that capacity for the Republican Party from 2007 until 2025, his legacy has become more defined by him being viewed as the personification of a broken political system than any accolades or honors that have been bestowed upon him since his tenure in the Senate began. The unclenching lust for power that has come to define the Washington establishment, of which McConnell is a figurehead, is succinctly illustrated by his unwillingness to relent from his position of power, seemingly leaving only death to take it from him. That characterization comes as no hyperbole as the forty-something-year tenured senator continues to refuse to abdicate from his office despite being hospitalized for nearly the last month, with no signs that he will emerge from his incapacitated state.

McConnell was admitted to an undisclosed hospital on June 14th after being found unconscious at his home in Washington, D.C., last being seen in public when he participated in Senate votes at the U.S. Capitol on June 11th. Since his admission, considerable speculation has arisen about his health, following years of its visibly jarring decline play out in the public eye. McConnell’s staff has done little to assuage the public of any of its concerns or dispel any of its suspicions, as it has remained largely silent on his status.

On the day of his hospitalization, McConnell’s office released a short statement saying “Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care.” One week after his hospitalization, his office released another brief statement confirming his health would keep him from voting during the week before Congress’ recess until the Senate’s return on July 14th — one month to the day of McConnell’s current admission to the hospital. As weeks approached nearly a month without any indication of if and when McConnell would be released from his hospital stay, his office released yet another vague statement on July 2nd conveying that his status “continues to improve” without giving any insight into what those improvements or his general status were other than stating that the senator is continuing to work closely with his staff. As tensions surrounding McConnell’s health continue to amplify, so does his office’s secrecy. Since the last public statement on the status of the senator’s health and well-being, issued on July 2nd, his office has not released any clarification despite being requested for comment by several sources, including the Associated Press.

McConnell’s current stay in the hospital follows several others in recent years, including one in March 2023 when he was admitted to treat a concussion and rib fracture he suffered after a fall at a hotel dinner following a reception for the Senate Leadership Fund. Following his release from the hospital after treatment for the concussion he suffered, McConnell fell yet again when leaving his plane at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in July 2023, though the lack of any injuries from the fall left that incident largely unnoticed by the public. However, McConnell was unable to escape the public scrutiny surrounding his health weeks later after he began suffering episodes of freezing up during public appearances, which left him unable to respond to questions he was asked during public appearances on July 26th and August 30th, 2023. Those episodes raised the most glaring concerns about whether the senator possessed the health and mental fitness to uphold the duties vested in his office.

Despite his health deteriorating to the point that it was impossible to shield from public view, McConnell remained defiant in the face of calls for him to step down from the Senate. Although McConnell remained committed to carrying on in his 7th consecutive term as a senator, he announced that he would step down from his role as Senate Republican Leader, effective in January 2025. The decision he made just before the 2024 U.S. elections to leave that leadership position he held since 2007 did little to signify it would yield any improvement in his health. It continued to deteriorate, leading to him falling and spraining his wrist following a GOP luncheon in late 2024 before falling down the stairs leading from the Senate floor just months later in early February 2025. A spokesman from McConnell’s office attributed the fall to “lingering effects of polio in his left leg” that the senator has suffered since contracting the virus at the age of two in 1944. After the fall, McConnell was seen using a wheelchair, which his staff described as a “precautionary matter.” With the toll his declining health was taking impossible even for him to deny, McConnell announced he would not seek re-election following the conclusion of his 7th term as senator on February 20th, 2025 — his 83rd birthday.

Although McConnell had finally acquiesced to calls for him to end his career in the Senate, he remained determined to see out his final term despite prevailing indications increasing doubt as to whether he would be able to do so. His continually declining health led to him being hospitalized for flu-like symptoms from February 2nd to 10th, 2026, nearly a year following his announcement that he would not seek re-election and weeks before his 84th birthday. McConnell would return to the Senate to serve in his office following the penultimate of his hospitalizations to date, becoming seen using a wheelchair with regularity and depending on staff to assist him with navigating the halls of Congress. Despite that decrepit state, McConnell continued to adamantly reject calls for his immediate resignation over ongoing concerns about his health.

Following his ongoing hospitalization beginning on June 14th, multiple media outlets reported audio of dispatch calls made to emergency services who responded to finding McConnell unconscious in the early hours of that morning. Audio from the calls revealed emergency service personnel discussing performing CPR on a victim of “cardiac arrest.” Desirée Townsend, the independent journalist who first obtained the audio of the emergency dispatch calls from McConnell’s home, stated that her sources told her that the senator has been declared brain dead by hospital staff. However, no official statement to that effect has been corroborated.

Although officials from McConnell’s office would not specify the extent of his illness nor the validity of the reports about audio taken from emergency responders, the severity of the picture those reports painted led to renewed calls on not just his resignation, but for term limits in Congress, as well as speculation on whether McConnell would ever return to his office and how he would be replaced if necessary.

Currently, McConnell is one of seven U.S. senators that are in their eighties, with Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey set to turn 80 on July 11th, which would make him the eighth. McConnell is the third oldest of these senators, only being younger than 84-year-old Bernie Sanders of Vermont and 92-year-old Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Longtime California Senator Dianne Feinstein served in her office until her death in 2023 at the age of 90. The mystery surrounding the health of Mitch McConnell putting the problems presented by elected representatives serving effectively serving for life so long as they can be re-elected, re-instigated the dialogue on imposing term limits. Outgoing Kentucky representative Thomas Massie responded to reports surrounding McConnell’s enigmatic hospitalization with remarks posted on his X account. While the tone of Massie’s response to rumors surrounding McConnell’s health was made in jest, Massie has been a longtime supporter of term limits. During the 117th Congress from 2021 to 2023, he signed the U.S. Term Limits Pledge, committing to support a constitutional amendment that would impose limits of three terms for house representatives and two terms for senators.

Although Massie’s opposition to career politicians like McConnell and a lack of term limits allowing them to become entrenched in Washington institutions is rooted in how they upset the balance of the separation of powers in which the executive branch is limited to two terms, it may be naive to believe that imposing any limitations on serving in Congress would rein in a political class that critics view as antithetical to the foundation of American democracy. While term limits would make it impossible for the likes of McConnell to serve in a leadership position in Congress for decades, those limits would also strengthen the stranglehold that the false dichotomy of America’s two-party system has over the nation. Term limits would render the tenures of elected representatives like those of Massie and his mentor Ron Paul — rare exceptions to the festering corruption plaguing Washington D.C. — shorter, allowing the Democratic and Republican parties to replace them with candidates more aligned with the Washington establishment. Outgoing elected officials already aligned with that establishment would likely be replaced by others of that ilk, making the only meaningful change the ouster of representatives who defy that existing power structure, who come few and far in between. In practice, that dynamic would further consolidate the existing power structure controlling Washington, D.C., leaving its opponents with fewer opportunities to defeat it.

Massie is a quintessential example of how the Washington establishment will expend any of the seemingly infinite resources it has at its disposal to subdue its opposition. The behemoth struggle that opponents to the powers that be face was illustrated by his loss to Ed Gallrein in the May 19th Republican primary for the 4th Congressional District of Kentucky, a congressional seat Massie has held for eight consecutive terms, despite him being in favor of term limits, since first being elected in 2012 in a special election for a vacant seat in the district following the resignation of Republican representative Geoff Davis.

The irony of Massie being ousted from his congressional seat by the two-party system entrenched in Washington, D.C., is that their goal of removing him from Congress could be upended in the event that Senator McConnell is unable to fulfill his remaining term lasting until January 20th, 2027. In the event McConnell’s health leads to his death or resignation, his vacant seat in the Senate would necessitate a special election to fill it. Until 2024, Kentucky’s governor would have been able to appoint a U.S. senator in the event of a vacancy. That practice ended in April 2024 when the Kentucky General Assembly repealed the statute authorizing temporary gubernatorial appointments in a resounding vote that overrode the veto of Democratic Governor Andy Beshear.

Although Republican Representative Andy Barr of Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District is slated to face off against Democratic opponent Charles Booker, a former state representative who represented the 43rd district in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021, Massie’s decision to not campaign to succeed the retiring senator Mitch McConnell was made before he lost his re-election campaign for his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Massie now due to leave the House at the conclusion of his current term may ultimately change his calculus on whether or not to run for the Senate in the event that a special election is called to replace McConnell.

In any event, the inevitable and rapidly approaching end of Mitch McConnell’s decades-long career in Congress is not symbolic of any changing of the guard. Though McConnell is the personification of a corrupt system determining how U.S. politics operates, he is not a vestige of that system as it still continues to define the power structure driving the inner machinations of Washington, D.C. What McConnell’s demise does is convey the systemic challenges that Americans face in confronting that imbalance of power, as the flaws of popular suggestions to remedy it such as imposing term limits highlight how they fall short of addressing the fundamental issues imposed by the country’s two-party system. Those shortcomings make viewing simply replacing the likes of the Mitch McConnells of the world as a triumph as myopic as treating the symptoms of an illness without attacking the underlying disease causing them.
