Two of my (young adult) kids watched Love Island USA, and I usually just heard it from another room. One time, I surprised one of them with a Love Island-branded drink I found, and I was honestly proud of myself for tracking it down. I’m not sure when I became this person, lol!

We had been using a borrowed Peacock login, but then the owner changed something, and we lost access. Of course, it happened on the worst night, last night! The Season 8 reunion was on, and my kids didn’t want to miss it. So I signed up for my own account and felt relieved to have it sorted out.

Then I realized the basic plan didn’t include the show. Not just the reunion, but the entire series and other originals were on a higher tier. I had to upgrade again just to watch what we signed up for.

I was annoyed for a few minutes. Then I remembered HBO. Years ago, I subscribed just to watch The Sopranos, kept my subscription because of that show, and have been a loyal subscriber ever since. Peacock is doing something similar. They put the whole reason people subscribe behind a higher tier and made the rest an extra. My kids weren’t going to miss out for long, and Peacock knew that before I did.

The real trick isn’t creating loyalty from scratch. It’s spotting where it already exists and making sure people pay what it’s worth.

What’s the one thing in your world you’d never include in the basic package, because it’s what finally convinces people to commit?

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? If the pacing is off, even strong ideas can end up feeling tiring.

This is easy to overlook because, in brand and sports marketing, people often see layout as just a container. They focus on the words, data, and creative ideas, and think layout is simply where those things go so people can read them. With this mindset, a designer’s job is just to make each slide clear, and that’s it. But making each slide readable is not the same as creating good pacing throughout the deck. A presentation is read as a sequence, not as a set of separate pages. The audience doesn’t see slide fourteen by itself. They see it as the fourteenth step in a rhythm that started on slide one, and by then, they already have a sense of how much effort each step will take.

That effort is what pacing really controls. A slide packed with logos, callouts, and different type sizes is not just harder to read, it also slows things down and makes the viewer work harder before moving on. If you have too many slides like this in a row, the whole deck starts to feel heavy, even if each slide is well designed and accurate. The audience might not think, “this deck is dense,” but they will feel tired, and they’ll blame that feeling on the ideas, not the layout. This is a common problem in sponsorship and brand presentations, where the urge to include every detail results in a document that is complete yet overwhelming.

The answer isn’t just to make everything minimal, and it’s important to be clear about that. If a deck is made up of only simple, minimalist slides, it creates a different pacing problem: everything feels the same. Without variety, nothing stands out, because emphasis only works when it’s different from what’s around it. If you add a data-heavy slide to a series of open, spare slides, it stands out and tells the audience to slow down and pay attention. But if every slide is already packed, that same slide just blends in. Good pacing isn’t about choosing between dense or simple slides. It’s about carefully balancing both, so you guide the audience’s attention and give them moments to pause.

Layout isn’t just following strategy, it’s part of it. For example, if a pitch deck starts with three dense slides in a row, it’s already sending a message: everything here needs close attention. If it starts with one main idea, it’s saying that this point is important enough to stand alone. Neither approach is always right or wrong. The problem is that, in most cases, no one makes this choice on purpose. The pattern of dense and open slides often happens by accident, depending on who worked on each section and how much they wanted to include.

This accidental approach is also why pacing can easily get lost during production. A deck might have good pacing at the final review, but then someone adds two slides later to meet a stakeholder’s request, without thinking about how those slides fit into the overall flow. Adding them might make sense for the content, but it can throw off the rhythm of the whole deck. This kind of problem happens in other editorial work too. A document can be correct in every part but still not work as a whole, because no one made sure the big picture was clear for future editors.

If you take away just one lesson from this, it’s that pacing should be a clear decision, not just something you notice after the fact. If you build a deck with a plan for its rhythm, you can include a note for the team about where the dense sections are and why. This way, anyone adding new slides can follow the same logic, instead of just putting them wherever there’s space. That note won’t slow anyone down, but it will help keep the pacing consistent every time someone updates the file.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? how much I like a place: the more out of place it feels, the better.

Honestly, saying, “Can you believe we’re in Rochester right now?” is about the highest compliment I can give.

I had that reaction twice within the past week. First at a high-end restaurant on a hill in a nearby suburb, then at a beachfront bar on “Lake America.”

The places couldn’t have been more different, but both gave me the same feeling. For a little while, each made me forget what I thought I knew about where I was.

That’s probably what I love most about discovering new places. It’s not that they make me want to be somewhere else. They change how I see somewhere familiar.

We tend to assume the familiar should feel familiar, and that the safest choice is the one that fits immediately. But sometimes the thing people remember is the experience that expands their idea of what belongs there.

The right fit isn’t always what you expect. You just know it when you feel it.

Maybe that’s why I’m still thinking about both places.

And maybe that’s the more interesting question whenever you’re deciding what belongs alongside something people already care about:

Are you choosing what people expect to see, or something that might help them see the whole experience differently?

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? y2="14"></line>

ESPN is about to see if one of sports media’s most well-known brands can succeed outside the sport where it started.

For the first six days of the 2026 U.S. Open, ESPN will stream RedZone at the event, giving viewers fast-paced, point-to-point coverage on up to 16 courts. ESPN says this is inspired by NFL RedZone and is a quicker version of the whiparound coverage they have used before in tennis.

From a product standpoint, the idea is simple.

Early rounds of Grand Slam tennis have the same problem RedZone solves: too many matches at once, making it hard for viewers to find the most important action. Quickly switching between them could make the tournament easier to follow, especially for casual or mobile viewers.

ESPN analysts also say this format highlights the biggest moments and could help attract younger viewers.

The harder choice is whether to use the RedZone name for it. This matters because formats and brands serve different purposes. A format fixes a viewing problem. A brand brings certain expectations.

NFL RedZone has built a clear promise over the years. Fans know what to expect before they even watch. That familiarity gives ESPN a shortcut, one familiar word explains most of the new tennis product, so they don’t have to start from scratch.

But every shortcut uses up some of the brand’s value.

If RedZone ends up being used for tennis, college football, basketball, and other sports, the name could shift from being just an NFL brand to a general ESPN programming label. When asked about other uses, ESPN said they haven’t decided yet.

That change wouldn’t always mean the brand is weaker. It could also mean ESPN is building a bigger platform.

The risk is that expanding too much makes the brand less unique.

Leaders often see strong brands as assets to use. But sometimes, a brand is valuable because it’s limited. Being exclusive can give a brand its meaning.

So ESPN has two main things to learn from this test.

First, do viewers actually want RedZone-style tennis? Second, and maybe more important, do audiences think RedZone should go beyond football?

Those two questions might not have the same answer.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? This question usually comes up quickly in a bright conference room, and most people don’t think of it as a design decision. They see it as a scheduling or stakeholder issue, or maybe even a matter of courage. But choosing what to leave out is actually a key design decision, and sometimes the most important one. Often, the slide you remove matters more than the ones you keep.

People usually think of design as adding things, like creating a logo, building a system, or making a toolkit. But what really makes a system last isn’t what you add. It’s what you take away, and whether those choices were made on purpose.

Think about the jersey patch. There’s hardly any space, so every detail on it has already made it through tough decisions before it appears on a player’s shoulder. The wordmark, the color, the icon… none of these are there by chance. They’re what remains after many small edits that fans never notice. What seems clear is actually the result of careful editing. A good patch doesn’t look edited, it just feels right. That’s when you know a cut was done well: it leaves no trace.

Now consider the ribbon board behind the field. It has more space than a patch, but that extra room often means less discipline. Because the scroll seems endless, sponsors ask for another line and marketing wants another mention. These requests aren’t wrong, but that’s the problem: someone has to set limits. If the format doesn’t do it, a person has to. The ribbon board shows what happens to a brand when no one is willing to make the tough cuts that the patch requires.

This is where sports marketing often misses the mark. We treat the toolkit as just a collection of assets like fonts, crop guides, and rules. But a real toolkit is also a record of what didn’t make it in. Every approved layout means many others were left out, and the toolkit should explain those choices, not just show the final results. If it doesn’t, it’s just a folder. The next designer might add things the original team never would have, and no one will know why, because the reasoning wasn’t saved. It was only talked about in the room, and that moment is gone.

That’s why editing should be seen as strategy, not just cleaning up. A real strategy lasts even when new people join the project. Housekeeping doesn’t. It gets undone little by little until the original idea is lost. If the reason for a cut isn’t clear to the next person, it wasn’t a strategic choice. It was just a personal preference, and that disappears as soon as its author leaves.

Some people might think this is just about minimalism, but that’s not the point. Many great sports marketing pieces are packed with detail. A highlight reel or a stat-heavy graphic needs it because the moment calls for it. The real point is that adding and removing things should be equally important decisions, but usually only additions get attention. Removals are often rushed, skipped, or apologized for because there’s no time to explain them. When you cut something just to meet a deadline, it’s not a real edit. It’s just leaving something out, and that doesn’t help future decisions.

The strongest brand systems treat the edit as a deliverable in its own right: something drafted, reviewed, and defended with the same seriousness as the asset it’s shaping. Not an afterthought applied once the “real” work is done, but the mechanism that decides what the real work even is. When that discipline holds, you can hand a toolkit to someone who wasn’t initially involved and watch them make the same calls you would have made, because the cut taught them how to think, not just what to keep. When it doesn’t hold, you get a hundred small additions dressed up as flexibility and a system that looks fine in June but unrecognizable by the playoffs.

None of this is just about design. It’s really about what you’re willing to defend when no one is watching, and it would be easier to leave one more thing in. The deck with the extra slide will look fine tomorrow. But it’s next season’s version, put together by someone who never learned why the line was drawn, that shows whether the cut was strategy or just something that looked good once.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? They can also tailor ads for different markets and sell the same space more than once. Tech companies promote these systems as ways to boost sponsor visibility and bring in more revenue, all without adding new signs.

It’s easy to see the business benefits. The impact on viewers is where things get tricky.

Virtual graphics only work when the technology can tell what should appear in front of the ad and what should be behind it, like players or the ball. This is harder than it sounds. In fact, researchers published studies just last month focused on making sure virtual ads don’t interfere with players or the action on the field.

When the technology works, viewers don’t notice. But when it fails, the ad stands out for the wrong reasons. For example, some CFL viewers have complained about digital field ads flickering or showing up wrong as players move through them. While opinions were mixed, most frustration was about the ads being distracting, not about their presence.

Sponsors should pay more attention to this difference. Traditional sponsorship is about being close to what fans love, hoping some of that excitement and loyalty transfers to the brand. But being too close can backfire. If viewers blame a sponsor for blocking the action, that visibility is no longer a win.

This leads to a measurement problem that hasn’t been solved. A virtual ad might get lots of screen time and impressions, but still annoy viewers. Those numbers don’t show if the ad was helpful, neutral, or just plain intrusive.

So the main issue isn’t really about technology. It’s about having the discipline to use it wisely. Just because digital systems let you create endless ad spots doesn’t mean every surface should be used for ads.

Sports organizations sell the attention that comes from real competition, and sponsors pay to reach that audience. But if too many ads start to hurt the quality of what people are watching, everyone (leagues, broadcasters, and brands) might end up making the ads better while making the game itself worse.

Has broadcast advertising technology gone too far?

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? A new Starbucks had opened on the boardwalk, which, in itself, isn’t that unusual. But the sign was a different story. If you look at the photo, you’ll see what I mean. I can’t figure out how it got approved, why no one stopped it, or how the installer thought it looked right. Maybe most people just walked by without noticing, but I couldn’t ignore it.

When a brand is that familiar, you stop reading the name and just recognize it. The proportions, placement, colors, and spacing are repeated so often that your brain knows what should be there before you even think about it. That’s probably why something this off feels so wrong, even if you’re just grabbing coffee on vacation. For someone like me, I can’t unsee it.

I know this is usually where social media would turn a bad Starbucks sign into a long lesson about leadership, resilience, or being authentic. I’ll spare you that. But I did keep thinking about how much value there is in that almost-invisible consistency, the kind you only notice when it’s gone.

You don’t expect this kind of mistake from Starbucks. Big companies don’t leave their brand standards up to chance. They have spec sheets, approval processes, and people whose job is to make sure a sign looks the same in New Jersey as it does anywhere else. So when you see a crooked sign out front, it’s not just a small design mistake. It shows that the usual precision isn’t automatic. It has to be checked at every step, and just one person deciding to eyeball it instead of measuring can make years of consistency seem uncertain at a single store.

That’s something to think about. People trust a brand because they expect it to look and feel the same everywhere, and that trust fades a bit each time reality falls short. No one will think less of Starbucks just because of one sign. But somewhere, a smaller partner is noticing how carefully their own name is treated, and deciding how much they can trust the next step.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? What looked like a finished presentation in the boardroom is handed to a production team with just six weeks and a fraction of the original budget. A campaign built around one main asset now needs to work on a jersey patch, a stadium ribbon board, a fifteen-second video, and a sponsor’s deck, none of which were considered when the idea was approved. Later, someone who never met the original designer might inherit the brand identity and have only 48 hours to adapt it for a market the first team never imagined.

This is the moment when design either shows its value or falls short.

During creative reviews, it’s easy to mistake a polished look for real strength. Something that looks great in one mockup, at one size, and in one setting might seem finished. But just because it’s complete doesn’t mean it works in practice. This is especially true in sports marketing, where most work doesn’t stay in its original form. A campaign made for a keynote needs to work as a fifteen-second pre-roll. A sponsorship deck for one partner must be quickly adapted for another by someone less experienced, often without starting from scratch. A brand system built for one season should still function when three new partners join, even if none fit the original layout.

A true system isn’t one that only works in the conditions it was made for, that’s just a single, well-presented choice. Before finishing any work, a production mindset asks a different question. Instead of “does it look right,” it asks, “will it still work when someone else needs to make, update, or reuse it without me there to explain what it’s for?”

This question shapes what gets created. If you pick a rare font that needs a license, it becomes a problem when a partner’s team tries to use the file. A layout that only works at one size is an issue when it needs to fit a stadium banner, an Instagram story, and a print ad in the same week. If a concept only makes sense with a long explanation, it’s a problem for a production vendor who has thirty seconds to figure it out and no time to read the full brief. These aren’t just matters of taste, they’re failures to consider the real situations where the work will be used, which are usually more limited, urgent, and collaborative than the original design process.

This isn’t about lowering ambition, it’s about focusing ambition where it matters. The best identity systems in sports marketing aren’t the ones with the flashiest single achievement. They’re the ones built on clear logic and simple rules, so anyone can use them under pressure, on a deadline, and in unexpected formats. Here, restraint isn’t just about looks, it’s also about making production easier. The simpler the system, the more people can use it without problems.

In this field, respect often means making work that others can use, even if we don’t call it that. We at Barbour pride ourselves on this (and our production partners often thank us!). When you design something that can be reproduced, you’re thinking of the people who will keep the work going, like the production coordinator who needs to make forty versions overnight, the regional team adapting a national campaign on a tight budget, or the intern years later who needs to trust the brand guide still works. If only the original team can use a system, it’s not really a system, it’s just a dependency.

This value isn’t obvious at approval time, which is why it’s often overlooked. The work that survives production rarely gets credit for lasting. It just keeps working quietly, season after season, as it’s handed from one person to the next. The version that can’t be reproduced has to be rebuilt from scratch by someone who never saw the original brief. The real problem doesn’t show up in the first presentation, but eighteen months later, when no one remembers who made the original file, and it either still works or it doesn’t.

Beautiful work that only its creator can produce, update, or reuse was never meant to provide real support, it was just a demonstration. The work that truly supports a brand through a season, roster changes, new sponsors, and smaller budgets is the kind that was built from the start to handle use by people who weren’t there when it was made.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? regular season. Each logo can be up to four square inches. This new rule brings in more money at a time when athletic departments are dealing with higher costs and more pressure. The Big 12 has already partnered with Monster Energy, so their logo will appear on jerseys, fields, and courts. Kansas has signed a deal with Ripple, putting an XRP patch on every varsity uniform. Ripple will also help with financial and tech education and job opportunities at the university. For decision-makers, the real question goes beyond just sponsorship money.

College uniforms are powerful brand symbols. They show history, membership, location, and school identity all at once. Adding a sponsor’s logo doesn’t just give the sponsor attention, it links the school and the sponsor in people’s minds.

A good sponsor can highlight innovation, community ties, or a drive to win. But a risky or confusing sponsor can raise tough questions for the school. The patch alone doesn’t decide if the brand is weakened. It’s the choice of sponsor, how they’re included, and how the partnership is managed that matters.

NIL brings another layer of uncertainty. A school’s patch isn’t the same as an athlete personally endorsing a company, but fans and consumers might not see the difference. Student-athletes can sign their own endorsement deals, sometimes with exclusive rights. Problems can come up if a game photo with a school sponsor is used in ads or social media, especially if the athlete has a deal with a competing brand.

That’s why schools, sponsors, and athlete reps need clear rules about uniforms, intellectual property, appearances, content use, what counts as a category, and how to handle conflicts.

Commercial patches can help programs stay competitive, but they can also change how people see the school. What matters most isn’t just having a logo, but which logo is chosen, how often it’s used, and whether the school is willing to turn down some deals.

Does selling space for jersey patches help keep programs competitive, or does it permanently lower the school’s brand value?

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? local library. Later, I joined the American Coaster Enthusiasts, which was just as niche as it sounds.

It was also amazing.

They sent newsletters with construction updates, ride reviews, and previews of coasters that hadn’t opened yet. They also organized events at amusement parks around the country. Sometimes, we got in before the gates opened, when the midway was quiet, and there were no lines.

At one event, the park turned the train around on a wooden coaster so we could ride the entire thing backward.

It was a small, even silly gesture. The coaster and track were the same. Still, the experience felt completely different because it was meant for people who would truly appreciate it.

That was the part I remember most.

It wasn’t simply about getting access. It was about knowing why it mattered. Everyone around me understood the references, cared about the details, and knew how special the moment was without needing an explanation.

I had found my people.

Access isn’t just a reward for paying attention. It’s what turns attention into a feeling of community.

What are you really creating when you give fans something no one else gets? Is it just a better seat, or is it a reason for them to stay forever?

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? Someone on the team is putting together the last six slides alone, with no time to ask design for help or check the guide. They’re picking a headline weight, figuring out how much space to leave around a chart, and choosing which of three blues actually looks right. There’s nothing written down for this exact moment, because no guide can predict every situation. In that hour, they aren’t just following the brand, they’re either living it or missing it, right then and there.

This is the kind of moment a brand guide was never really made for, but it’s also the one that matters most. Most guides are written for calm situations: the logo placement, the approved colors, the type scale, and the do’s and don’ts, all laid out as if there’s always time to check them. But audiences don’t experience brands in those calm moments. They see them in the rush, the slide made at the last minute, the social post written between meetings, the client handout nobody had time to template. If the team can’t keep things consistent, then the guide wasn’t really shaping the brand. It was just organizing the files.

There’s a big difference between following rules and being fluent, much like the gap between knowing grammar and actually speaking a language. A grammar book tells you that adjectives come before nouns in English, or that a sentence needs a subject and a verb. But a fluent speaker doesn’t stop to check those rules. They’ve absorbed the patterns so well that using them feels natural. If you ask a fluent speaker why a sentence sounds off, they often can’t explain the rule. They just know. That’s real fluency: making decisions without needing to look up the rules, because those rules have become second nature.

Brand guides are usually written like grammar books. They record choices that have already been made, in situations that have already happened. But they can’t teach someone how to make the next call, in a new situation, under pressure, with no template to follow. That’s where inconsistency creeps in… not when someone has the guide open, but when they don’t have time to check it and have to rely on what they’ve really learned.

If you watch two designers use the same guide, the difference shows up quickly. The one who’s only read the document usually falls into one of two traps: either they copy every layout too closely, or they start to ignore the rules when there’s no example to follow. The designer who understands the thinking behind the guide avoids both. They can create something new that still feels like the brand, because they’re not just copying a pattern, they’re using instincts about hierarchy, restraint, and proportion that the pattern was meant to teach. That’s the difference between just knowing the rules and really understanding them.

That’s why building fluency is different from teaching compliance. Compliance means giving someone the document and checking if they follow it. Fluency comes from explaining why each choice was made, not just what the choice was. Why use this much white space and not less? Why does this type weight feel strong without being loud? Why simplify a chart even if the data could be more detailed? These are the moments that really teach good judgment, and they rarely happen inside the guide. They happen in side notes, quick feedback, and mentoring — things most brand systems expect to happen naturally but never actually plan for.

There’s a cost to skipping this step, and it’s not what most teams expect. The brand probably won’t look obviously wrong, there won’t be a glaring color mistake or a random font. The problem is more subtle. Work from a team that only memorized the guide often feels correct but lifeless, technically right but missing something, like a sentence that follows every grammar rule but doesn’t sound natural. On the other hand, work done under real pressure, without the guide, starts to drift in ways that are hard to pin on any one broken rule, because no single rule was actually broken. What’s missing is the shared instinct that should have filled the gap where the guide couldn’t help.

The teams that stay consistent under pressure usually aren’t the ones with the thickest guide. They’re the ones who were trusted early on with tricky situations, the ones without a template, and who were shown the reasoning behind decisions, not just the final answer. It takes longer to build a brand system this way, but it’s the only approach that works when the deadline is tight, the handout is improvised, and nobody has time to check the guide. Fluency isn’t about looking up the rules, it’s about knowing what to do when there’s no time to look.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? presenting, you can fill in whatever the layout leaves out. You can answer questions before they turn into doubt, add context that never made it onto the page, catch a wrong read before it spreads to everyone else in the room. Your presence does a lot of work that the design itself never has to do, which is exactly the problem, because it means a weak layout can feel a lot stronger than it actually is.

The deck reads as clear because you’re the one walking people through it. The proposal feels complete because you’re carrying the history behind every line in your head. The plan feels aligned because everyone shaping it is sitting in the same room, hearing the same explanation at the same moment.

Then the meeting ends, and some of that context is lost.

Someone forwards the document to a colleague who wasn’t there. A partner pulls one slide and sends it up to their own leadership. An executive skims the proposal between two other calls, seeing only what the grid puts in front of their eye first. A sales lead lifts a page of it three weeks later and treats it as settled fact. Somewhere down the line, someone makes a real decision based on a layout you never expected to stand on its own.

That’s when the design actually gets tested.

In sports marketing, materials almost never stay put. They move across teams, agencies, rights holders, sponsors, leagues, talent groups, senior leadership, and every hand-off puts a little more distance between the reader and the room where the thing was first explained. Context doesn’t disappear all at once. It just gets thinner with each step, until what’s left barely resembles what you meant.

This is usually where good work starts to lose its shape. Not because the thinking behind it was weak, but because the design was built to depend on you being there to narrate it. You know exactly what the recommendation means. The next person to see it might see only a headline, a chart, and whatever your eye was trained to place at the top of the visual order. You remember why one option got cut from the page entirely, they may never know it was considered. You hear caution in a subhead you deliberately kept small, they read the same subhead as certainty, because nothing in the composition told them otherwise.

And the risk isn’t only that they’ll be confused. A document can be perfectly understandable and still get used badly. A slide can be easy to read without being clear enough to actually guide a decision. A strategy can sound polished from front to back while leaving the next reader with no real sense of what matters most.

That’s the tension sitting underneath many executive materials, and it’s a design tension before it’s a writing one. You’re trying to keep the composition simple, but you’re also asking that same composition to carry real judgment on your behalf. And a page that’s visually simple isn’t automatically a page that’s doing less work. Often it’s doing more, more precisely.

The instinct, when teams sense this problem, is to add more: more labels, more callouts, more slides explaining the slides, more of the reasoning crammed into the margins. It rarely works, and any designer who’s had to clean up an over-annotated deck knows why. Every added element competes with the one you actually need the reader to find first. More information doesn’t produce more clarity, it just adds more elements fighting for the same eye, until the hierarchy that should have structured the argument collapses into noise. The goal was never to recreate the whole meeting on the page. It’s to keep the meaning of that meeting intact using nothing but composition, once the room has cleared and you’re not there to point.

That calls for a different question than the one most people are asking. Not whether the material supports your presentation, but whether it can survive without it. Does the eye land on the right thing first, with nobody there to point? Can a reader trace the visual hierarchy and arrive at the same conclusion you would have walked them to out loud? Can they tell, just from what’s large and what’s small, what’s known, what’s assumed, and what still needs someone’s judgment to close the gap? Could one page travel on its own without changing what the whole thing meant?

These aren’t really questions about decoration. They’re questions about trust, built the same way trust in any craft is built: through restraint, through knowing what to leave off the page as much as what to put on it.

Once a document starts traveling, its design starts speaking for you in rooms you’ll never enter. The layout shows how carefully you thought about a reader you couldn’t see yet. The typography shows how much editing happened before anything got finalized. The white space shows whether you trusted the one real idea to stand on its own, or whether you were still trying to say everything at once. That’s why hand-off matters so much in work where trust is the whole currency. Senior leaders don’t need more visual noise, they need a composition confident enough that they don’t have to ask what to look at first. Partners don’t need every layer of the process laid bare, they need a page built well enough that it survives contact with someone who’s never seen the deck before.

Good design was never meant to replace the conversation. It gives the conversation a stable visual anchor to start from instead of a shaky one.

Maybe the useful shift is designing for the second viewer, not just the first. The first viewer is sitting across from you, watching you point. They can ask what a chart means. The second viewer opens the file later, alone, often with more authority and less patience, and their read of your hierarchy carries more weight than your live narration ever did.

When you actually design with that second viewer in mind, the work changes at the level of craft, not just message. The hierarchy gets more honest because there’s no voice in the room to rescue a weak one. The type gets more deliberate because size and weight now have to do the job that tone of voice used to do. The composition gets more restrained, because every additional element is one more thing standing between a stranger and the point.

At that point you’re not really designing a record of what you planned to say in the meeting. You’re handing off judgment, visually and permanently, to someone you may never meet.

That’s the standard worth holding yourself to: not whether the room understood you while you were standing in it, but whether the work still holds up once you’re gone.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? Whichever airline was tied to the losing country would swap its Instagram profile picture for its rival’s logo for one day.

England won 2–1. Norwegian held up its end of the bargain.

The stunt got the kind of reach social teams dream about. Business Insider reported the campaign reached tens of millions globally, and Skift found Norwegian’s post pulled in engagement well above its usual range. The easy read is that both airlines won here, they generated attention, personality, and earned distribution without spending a dime on official event media.

The harder question is what that attention was borrowed from.

Qatar Airways is FIFA’s Global Airline Partner through 2030. American Airlines holds official North American supplier rights for the 2026 tournament. Those deals come with formal access, promotional rights, and a recognized tie to the event. British Airways and Norwegian had none of that. But the wager only worked because everyone watching knew exactly which match it was riding on.

That doesn’t automatically make it an IP violation, to be clear.

A brand can talk about a match, cheer for a national team, or just join the public conversation without stepping on event rights. The risk shows up when protected marks, tournament imagery, promotions, or language implying official status creep into the execution.

Ambush marketing is also a bigger category than straight-up trademark infringement. WIPO defines it as an attempt to attach a business to a major sporting event without paying sponsorship fees. As I’ve discussed here before, FIFA, separately, protects its event names, logos, symbols, and other assets licensed to paying partners. How this actually plays out legally depends on jurisdiction and exactly what content gets used. For most decision-makers, though, the trust question probably matters more than the legal one.

Did this wager make either airline look careless with its brand? Probably not, to most people watching. It was short-lived, the joke was obvious, and the context made sense.

But the same move sets a precedent. If you can hand your logo to a competitor for one cultural moment, what’s the rule for the next one? Who signs off? Which rivals make the cut? Which events carry too much rights exposure to touch?

Real-time marketing works best when it feels spontaneous. Responsible brand management means that spontaneity gets governed before it ever goes public.

So the real question isn’t whether the post was fun to watch.

It’s whether you’d let your brand make the same bet.

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? You walk in, sit wherever, scan the code at your table, order and pay from your phone. No host, no small talk, no waiting to flag anyone down. Honestly, I don’t mind that part. Some interactions are worth skipping.

My meal came out in a reasonable amount of time. It arrived on a plastic plate, with plastic utensils. Not compostable, not recyclable. Just plastic, the kind that outlives the meal by a couple hundred years and the restaurant probably by a lot longer. I wasn’t expecting fine china. I just didn’t expect something this disposable to be the default, at a time when disposable is supposed to be the thing everyone’s trying to design out.

As I ate my meal, I tried to work out the logic. If the whole model is built around removing friction, someone had to decide which friction was worth removing. The greeting. The small talk. The wait. Fine. But somewhere in that same decision, they also decided that what gets left behind afterward wasn’t worth thinking about. Nobody sets out to build something wasteful. It just ends up that way when speed is the only thing being optimized for.

There’s a real difference between removing what’s inconvenient and removing what people were actually there for, or what happens after they leave, and at speed, those things start to look identical.

Strip away enough overhead, and you eventually reach what you actually valued in the first place, and what you were willing to leave behind. You just don’t always notice until it shows up on a plastic plate.

If you removed the friction from your fan or partner experience tomorrow, how sure are you that you know which part was the inconvenience, which part was the reason they stayed, and what you quietly left behind to get there faster?

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook? You see it in campaign decks, in partnership announcements, in the way a rights holder, sponsor, team, or media brand tries to make every message carry the full weight of the business. The brand has heritage, reach, talent, access, data, and cultural value, so the instinct is to show it all at once.

That instinct makes sense. Nobody in sports marketing wants the work to feel small. Nobody wants a board, a partner, or a fan base to miss the value. When the stakes feel high, it’s natural to protect the idea by adding more proof, more language, more claims, more signals that the brand is serious.

But this is where sophisticated brands start to separate themselves. They understand that the strongest expression of value isn’t always the fullest one. Sometimes the most confident thing a brand can do is choose what not to say, and that’s harder than it sounds.

Restraint can feel risky. It can feel like leaving strength unused, like someone will ask why you didn’t mention the full scope. Those questions usually come from care, from people who know how much work sits behind the brand and don’t want it flattened. But the audience isn’t judging the brand by how much it can explain at once. They’re judging whether the brand knows what matters most in that moment.

A sponsor doesn’t need every proof point in the first sentence. A fan doesn’t need every layer of strategy inside one campaign. A media buyer doesn’t need the whole brand architecture packed into a single idea. What they need is clarity, and the feeling that the brand understands the moment it’s actually in.

When a brand tries to prove everything at once, the work starts to sound unsure. Not because the brand is weak, but because the message is trying to make sure no one misses the point. Fear that someone won’t get it. Fear that one claim won’t land. Fear that silence will read as absence. That fear shows up as overstatement, as stacked messaging, as creative that says the same thing three different ways because no one wanted to choose the one way that mattered most.

The cost isn’t only how the work looks. It’s how the brand feels. People can tell when a message is trying too hard to land. They feel the extra weight. They feel the brand reaching for attention instead of earning trust.

Restraint works differently. It creates space around the idea and lets the audience step toward the meaning instead of being pushed into it. It shows the brand has enough self-knowledge to lead with one clear truth, and enough patience to let the rest unfold over time. That’s often what confidence actually looks like. Not louder. Not bigger. Not more complete. More precise.

This matters in sports because the environment is already crowded before your brand enters it. Fans are moving through games, highlights, alerts, creator content, athlete posts, sponsor messages, and media coverage all day. Adding more doesn’t always make the message stronger. Sometimes it makes the audience work harder to find it.

So the better question isn’t whether you’ve said enough. It’s whether you’ve removed enough for the strongest idea to be seen. That shift changes the conversation.

You stop treating every message like it has to make the whole case. You ask what this moment is asking of the brand. What gets removed isn’t a compromise. It’s part of the confidence.

None of this means being vague or minimal for the sake of looking refined. It means knowing the difference between depth and density. Depth gives people something to feel and remember. Density just gives them more to process.

The strongest brands know they don’t have to spend every asset proving the whole case in one place. That kind of restraint usually takes senior judgment, someone in the room who can say that something’s true but not needed here. It takes the confidence to protect the one idea from all the good things that don’t actually serve it.

Because when a brand knows what to remove, it’s usually showing you the clearest sign that it knows who it is.

Where is your brand still trying to prove too much at once?

Enjoying The Sports Marketing Playbook?
