It’s summer, with all the glorious distractions in place, and people are taking well-deserved vacations. With Congress in recess until after Labor Day, the media seems more focused on other topics — all important in their own right. The illegal Iran War. Affordability. Upcoming Congressional elections and the president’s attempts to thwart GOP losses by illegal means. I love that the upcoming GOP midterm convention will be held in Dallas, with large posters planned to keep the Epstein Files top of mind. It’s a brilliant campaign, one that reminds Republicans who they’re protecting. And if the protectors are Democrats, we need an equally brilliant campaign to remind them, too.

Yesterday, I read a post on Facebook about how to reach men on the concept of rape. The suggestion was to imagine two men hanging out together, having fun. One gets drunk. The other starts making advances. Eventually, he rapes his “friend,” who stops fighting from emotional exhaustion, or from passing out.

Under what conditions would that be OK?

Of course, the answer is: under NO CONDITIONS would that be OK. Now think about the questions that get asked of women who have been raped. What struck me about the post was how hard it is for many men to understand that women do not ask to be raped by dressing provocatively, flirting, or smiling at men. When the situation is two men, there is a black and white answer. It should always be a black and white situation. No means no.

I attended a play with a girlfriend once. On the way out, we bumped into her boss, who was there with his wife and mother. I was flirty — I was having a good time and newly divorced. As his wife and mother walked ahead, he held back and asked me out on a date. I scoffed, noting that he was married and I’d just met his wife. He said he was confused, because I’d been flirty. I assured him my flirtation had been about me feeling good about myself, and had nothing to do with him. He deflated, and left after asking me not to tell my friend — his employee — about the exchange.

This cultural phenomenon is part of why women would rather meet a bear in the woods than an unknown man. Something to think about, as we continue seeking justice for the survivors of the Epstein Class.

Slowly, the broken things in the room began to change. The wheel found its missing spokes. The chair found its fourth leg and stood level again. Someone fitted new glass, pane by careful pane, into the frame that had waited so long for it.

The Seeker watched, and something in her chest loosened, the way a held breath finally lets go.

Power was not the workshop. It was not the tools laid out on the table, and it was not even the hand that happened, at a given moment, to be holding one.

Power was only the plain capacity to act upon the world.

What mattered was everything that came after. Whether the action left others more able, and not less. Whether another hand could still pick up what you set down. Whether the thing you built belonged only to you, or whether others could enter it and call it theirs as well.

Eagle Man Guide closed the lid of the toolbox and pushed it gently across the table toward her.

She hesitated. “You want me to carry this?”

“You already carry one.” He touched two fingers to her chest, over her heart. “Everyone does.”

She thought of her own tools, then — the voice she had been given, the people she could still call, the rooms she was allowed to enter, the things she knew and had not yet said aloud, the plain, unglamorous fact of showing up somewhere because it mattered that someone did. None of it felt small to her anymore.

Outside the workshop, dawn had begun finding its way down through the tangle of roots above them.

Before they climbed back up through the tree, the Seeker looked once more at the people bent over their work in the lantern light. No one stood above the rest of them. No one guarded the tools from anyone else.

They were only repairing and building.

When she stepped at last into the waking world, she carried a question up with her, and it did not feel like a burden. It felt like the beginning of one.

Not whether she had power. She knew, now, that she did.

Only what her power would answer to.

And what would be left standing when, at the end of all of it, she finally set the tools down.

How to build power, keep it from rusting, and use it without hurting anyone.

I’ve spent more than five essays examining and taking power apart — the fear that fuels it, the hierarchy it was built on, the words it hides behind. Here’s where I’ve landed: power isn’t the enemy. Power is a tool. A hammer builds a house or breaks a window. The tool doesn’t decide which. The hand on it does — and so does whether that hand ever gets checked.

So let’s talk about power the way we’d talk about any tool: what it’s for, which ones belong in your box, how you keep them from rusting, and how you use them without putting someone’s eye out.

What the toolbox is for

Regular people don’t buy a drill because they love drills. They buy it to build a shelf, hang a door, fix what’s broken. Power works the same way. It’s not the project. It’s what you build a functioning community with, what you fix a broken system with, what you defend a democracy with when it’s under attack. The minute power stops being for something and starts being the point, it stops building anything. It just guards itself. That’s the doom loop I named in my first essay in this series: someone wins today, someone else wins tomorrow, and the game itself never changes. A toolbox used to build something breaks that loop. A toolbox hoarded and admired repeats it.

Five tools worth having in your box

Most people think they’re unarmed because they don’t have a title. They’re wrong. Democracy runs on tools that don’t require an office to pick up. But every tool here has a shadow version — the same tool, picked up for power’s sake instead of the job it was meant to do. Worth naming both.

Voice. The simplest tool there is, and the most underused. Rosa Parks didn’t hold a position. She held a seat, and she refused to give it up. One refusal, said clearly and publicly, is a tool in motion. Its shadow is trolling — noise dressed up as speech, aimed at silencing someone rather than saying anything.

Coalition. A wrench, not a hammer — it only works because it grips. Power multiplies when it’s shared and evaporates when it’s hoarded. Twenty people who agree on one thing can move more than one person who agrees with everyone. That’s the entire logic behind unions, boycotts, and every cross-partisan campaign I’ve spent twenty years nurturing. Its shadow is the mob — a coalition that exists only to punish, with nothing left to build once the target’s been taken down.

Position. Even a small foothold inside a system — a school board seat, a line manager’s job, a local paper’s byline — is a lever, and a lever moves things much bigger than the hand on it. You don’t need to run the system to move it. Its shadow isn’t gatekeeping itself — keeping bad-faith actors and unstable voices out protects the room, and that’s the tool working right. The shadow is using the same door to keep out disagreement instead: closing it on a rival opinion rather than a real threat, to protect the person holding the key instead of the work behind it.

Information. Whistleblowers have no army and no vote. What they have is a light in a dark room, pointed at the right moment. That’s why authoritarian movements always go after journalists, scientists, and record-keepers first — not because those people are powerful in the usual sense, but because they can turn on the light of accountability. Its shadow is doxxing and blackmail — the same light, aimed to harass or expose someone’s private life instead of the public’s business.

Presence. The tool that costs nothing and shows up anyway — at the meeting, the protest, the hearing, the vigil. Regimes don’t fall to arguments. They fall to crowds. Its shadow is the show of force — a crowd assembled to intimidate rather than to be counted, armed men outside a polling place instead of citizens inside the room.

None of these tools require permission. All of them require you to take the tool out of the tool box and use it. And it is the step most people skip. Any of these tools can be picked up by the same hand for the opposite reason — which is exactly why the next section matters.

Tool maintenance

Here’s what none of my earlier essays answered, and it’s the one that matters most: tools left unchecked rust, or worse, they get pointed at the wrong thing. Power obtained cleanly can still go bad. The mechanism is always the same — it stops answering to anything outside itself.

Look at the Saturday Night Massacre. In 1973, Nixon ordered his attorney general, Elliot Richardson, to fire the special prosecutor investigating him. Richardson resigned instead. So did his deputy, William Ruckelshaus, when the same order landed on his desk. Neither man had a throne to lose. What they had was a loyalty that ran to the office and the rule of law, not to the man who happened to be holding it — and when the two came into conflict, they chose the office. That’s the safety switch, working exactly as designed, in two resignation letters.

Build that switch in on purpose, and you don’t have to hope people stay honest. Put a real end date on the role — a term limit, a sunset clause — so power can’t quietly weld itself in place. Make the books, the votes, and the decisions visible, so bad choices cost something before they compound. Rotate who holds the tools, so no single person becomes the toolbox. And give the people affected by a decision a way to push back before it’s final, not after.

None of that is about finding better people. It’s about not needing to.

Using the tool in the right way

Here’s the test: does this use of power leave the people it touches more capable, or less? A tool used well teaches the next person to use it too. A tool hoarded makes sure only one person ever can.

A boss who uses authority to grow their team’s judgment is using the tool right. A boss who uses it to make sure no one on the team can function without them is not — even if neither one ever raises their voice. Same tool. Opposite direction.

Open the box

Pick one tool you already have — a role, a platform, a relationship, a vote — and ask who it actually answers to right now. Yourself? Or something bigger than you?

Today I want to rage at the snail’s pace — slower than it needs to be. Case in point: Maxwell loses her bid to keep the case files sealed. This whole fight for the last several weeks over the hand-written notes has been a distraction. I’ve read them. Nothing in the handwritten notes was different from the FBI interview notes I covered in March. So why make it a thing? To keep us fighting for a meaningless judicial win instead of actual accountability.

The cover-up’s goal is to run out the clock. How can we help justice move faster, so the aging perpetrators and their enablers are held accountable? And what does justice look like when the DOJ itself can defy judicial orders and there is no enforcement mechanism? Maybe Blanche is held in contempt of court. Will he be arrested and jailed? If not, then what is the point?

What if some of humanity’s greatest advances have come from people who were, quite literally, unreasonable?

Unreasonable is not the same as mentally ill or unstable. Unreasonable people have confidence, ambition, imagination and willingness to take risks well outside the range of ordinary people.

Stop for a moment to consider what it takes to propose something genuinely revolutionary. I remember in the 1990s someone predicted that we would watch entertainment on our phones. I scoffed, as I watched my 29” tube TV. I had trouble getting rid of that TV in 2010.

Someone imagined personalized entertainment on our devices more than 30 years ago and now it’s how life is for most of us in the modern world.

Whoever starts dreaming has to look at a reality everyone else accepts and say, “I think it could be better.”

Sometimes I feel this way. I see a world where we have communities that assure basic needs are met and people are healthier. Addiction is rare and treated as a sign that needs are unmet. Disagreements are mediated to the best possible outcome for all, not to benefit the powerful. Justice is centered on restoration, and punishment is a last resort.

This vision of a healthy community is dismissed as “utopian.” My view is that our system could be modified to make it possible. The system we have rewards a few and sacrifices the many to money, power and extraction. What if we changed our social priorities? How would we decide together?

For us visionaries, experts dismiss us, friends worry about us, investors refuse us, colleagues ridicule us and evidence remains frustratingly incomplete.

Such is the burden of seeing what others cannot. Sometimes, we who imagine a better world are fools. Sometimes we change the world.

And therein lies a problem we don’t talk about enough. How do we tell the difference between being visionary and madness?

The psychological characteristics that allow one to attempt the extraordinary can look remarkably similar to the characteristics that make one dangerous when they possess too much power.

Walking the Edge

There is a long cultural fascination with the relationship between genius and madness. Much of it is mythology. We retrospectively diagnose famous artists, scientists and political leaders from biographies and anecdotes, often with little justification to confirm our bias or theory.

But beneath the mythology is a legitimate body of research that is relevant.

For example, researchers studying bipolar-spectrum traits have found associations between hypomanic characteristics and creativity, ambition and intense goal pursuit. This is why society needs a few unreasonable people to advance. Reasonable people are… too reasonable!

The Problem With Being Right and Gaining Power

What happens when an unreasonable person succeeds?

Once an ambition is realized and there is “evidence” the visionary was correct. This is where the rest of us have a role to play.

How would your ego respond if your impossible company were built? If your scientific theory were proven by peers? If your activist political movement caught fire, or your invention worked? If you became famous?

My ego would swell to the size of the world. I would feel invincible! And use my success to justify every other visionary or crazy idea I had. Wouldn’t you?

Okay, maybe some of our egos are tamed. And I wish more were.

Let’s suppose an imagined visionary whose ego is untamed. They have accumulated evidence they are RIGHT! Now they believe that other people’s doubts should be ignored.

“They said I was wrong before. I trusted myself. I was right.”

That success becomes a license to dominate others in the future. For the visionary, it is a time of personal peril. If they are a leader, it imperils their followers too.

The next time advisers say no, the leader remembers that previous advisers said no, and dismisses their oversight. When experts raise objections, the leader remembers experts who were previously mistaken and diminishes their current critique. When colleagues question the strategy, disagreement itself may begin to look like timidity and lead to accusations.

And eventually the leader shifts from thinking, “No one else can see what I see,” to thinking, “Only I understand what is happening.”

Those sentences are separated by only a few words. And yet, psychologically and politically, they are worlds apart.

Disappearing Guardrails

This is where power enters the story. At the beginning of an innovator’s journey, reality provides constant resistance.

Resistance looks like investors refusing to fund their idea. The experiments fail or no one buys the thing. Editors reject ideas for publication. Perhaps voters choose somebody else. Eventually, colleagues move away or are fired and competitors pull ahead or win outright.

These experiences are frustrating, but they perform an essential function — checking the vision or innovation against societal reality.

An extraordinary person doesn’t merely have to believe in an idea. Eventually, something outside that person must validate it.

Hazards emerge when successful leaders gradually acquire the ability to remove the resistance and constraints provided by others.

Danger looks like:

Choosing agreeable advisors
Firing dissenters
Rewarding loyalty
Surrounding themselves with people who share their worldview
Narrowing their circle
Treating criticism of the leader as criticism of the mission.
Losing the organization’s ability to say no.

At that point, the leader may not have changed nearly as much as the environment around the leader has changed. This is what many of us feel we are witnessing in the United States right now.

And that may be one of the most dangerous consequences of power for society’s advancement.

Followers Change the Equation

Let’s head back to the research for some hope. There’s an important clue in how followers can make a positive difference.

It has to do with the concept that destructive leadership is rarely produced by a destructive leader alone. Researchers have described a “toxic triangle”: destructive leaders, susceptible followers and environments that allow destructive leadership to flourish.

Despite our fascination with the psychology of powerful leaders, we can decide to look at the other half of the story.

Followers matter.

Imagine a charismatic leader announcing an audacious goal. The follower experience starts with:

That’s an extraordinary idea. Let’s see whether we can make it work.

It evolves to:

Other people simply don’t understand what we’re doing.

Then:

The critics are trying to stop us.

Eventually:

The stakes are too important to let ordinary rules stand in our way.

Something fundamental has changed. The mission has been matched with loyalty to the leader. The leader’s certainty has become collective certainty and almost anything can be justified in its name.

History contains many versions of that story. But it also contains another version — one where followers, and the systems around them, hold the line instead.

We still need unreasonable people to break us out of the “it’s always been this way” bubble. Science offers one model for how: an elegant process for the problem of unreasonable people. It welcomes challenges to the status quo — a scientist is free to announce that generations of experts are wrong and spend decades pursuing an idea everyone else thinks is ridiculous. In theory, science says to these challenges:

Wonderful. Show us.

Other scientists test the claim, look for alternative explanations, try to reproduce the result and challenge assumptions. The revolutionary thinker receives extraordinary freedom to imagine and almost no authority to declare themselves correct. Others must validate the results.

Democracy has never depended upon leaders being psychologically ordinary. Our founding proves that. Almost every major social movement required people willing to insist that something widely considered impossible—or absurd, disruptive, economically infeasible or dangerous—was actually necessary.

Let’s think of all the unreasonable people who came before:

Abolitionists were unreasonable.
Suffragists were unreasonable.
Civil-rights activists were unreasonable.
People demanding religious freedom were unreasonable.
Labor organizers were unreasonable.

Marriage equality advocates were unreasonable.

Each of these people was unreasonable according to the conventional wisdom of their eras.

Social progress frequently begins with someone refusing to accept the world as it is. The genius of democracy isn’t eliminating such people. It is giving them room to persuade us without giving them absolute power over us.

That is the peril we now face. This is why checks and balances matter — they hold power accountable:

Congress can say no. Courts can say no. States can say no. Voters can say no. Journalists can investigate. Citizens can protest. Opponents can organize.

And eventually another election comes. We usually describe these things as “checks and balances.” That phrase is so familiar that it can sound like an antique piece of constitutional vocabulary. But checks and balances serve a profoundly human purpose.

They protect society from human certainty.

Vision or Grandiosity?

Which brings us back to the impossible question. How do we distinguish visionary conviction from grandiosity? At the beginning, perhaps we can’t. Perhaps one leads to the other. Both may say:

Can followers question the leader without being expelled from the group?

Does the mission remain larger than the leader?

Most importantly: Can someone still say no?

We Need the Edge Walkers

I don’t want a society populated only by cautious, conventional, perfectly reasonable people — people I love. I’m not sure humanity would have gotten very far that way. We need people who see possibilities the rest of us cannot see. Like that “stupid” idea in the 90s of personal entertainment on demand on all our devices. I love it now.

We need dreamers, dissenters, inventors, agitators, entrepreneurs, artists, reformers and more.

We need people willing to look ridiculous and risk failure. People are stubborn enough to keep going when everyone tells them to stop.

We may even need people whose psychological characteristics place them farther from the human average than most of us would find comfortable. Those who walk the edge.

But there is an enormous difference between giving unusual people room to change the world and giving them the power to impose their reality upon it.

Maybe that is one of civilization’s great balancing acts.

We need unreasonable people.

We also need people who can tell them no.

The healthiest societies may be the ones capable of doing both. Will we?

My Take

We move toward what we want, not what we’re told to believe about what matters or some idea of what being a citizen means.

That’s why personal visioning has to come before civic engagement, not alongside it. When people vision out loud, they discover they want nearly the same things: safety, better lives for their kids, neighbors who know their names. Nobody visions for gridlock.

Kumbaya asks people to feel good together. Visioning asks them to want something for themselves which turns out to be something together — and wanting is what keeps people showing up. Belief fades. Desire doesn’t.

When we start with issues or systems, we’ve stepped away from the personal desires that actually fuel movements. It’s time to start personally and individually. Nothing less will hold together for the time it will take.

My Take

I am angry, sad, and disappointed. Again.

My one solace: Todd Blanche appears to be following John Mitchell’s path. Patience is required — corruption won again this week. A refresher: John Mitchell was Nixon’s Attorney General, and before that, his personal lawyer. History doesn’t repeat, but this is a strong rhyme, and the only reason is cover-up.

Why did Senators who claimed to be “concerned” about Blanche’s nomination lack the courage to vote no? Did they care more about killing a $1.8 billion slush fund for insurrectionists than about Epstein survivors? What about immunity for the president and his family from IRS audits? These things shouldn’t be contrasted with each other. They are a trail of ongoing corruption. The Senators had the power to say no. They said yes.

Two days before the vote, a judge ruled that the Blanche-led DOJ had failed to follow the Epstein Files Transparency Act. He wasn’t speaking without evidence — he had demanded, received, and reviewed the unredacted files that journalist Katie Phang is fighting to make public. His ruling: DOJ failed to comply with his order to explain each redaction. They have to try again. Blanche never blinked. The Senators did. Then they confirmed him as the country’s top law enforcement officer.

Power, wealth, and privilege know how to run out the clock. Blanche promised to “follow the law.” He never mentioned that laws can change.

I also read the Senate report Oregon Senator Ron Wyden released. In 67 pages, he outlines decades of bankers protecting Epstein as a client — and wanting his referrals, especially to Leon Black. JPMorgan Chase had eventually banned Epstein. He worked around it through Black’s accounts and kept doing business with Chase anyway. The report is damning. The banks didn’t report what they knew, and there appears to be evidence to convict people. That would take Treasury investigating and DOJ giving a damn. They won’t. They don’t believe the rule of law applies to people like this.

Keep pressuring for transparency. Stay focused. This case will expose everyone who believes themselves above the law, eventually. I hope they’re still alive to be held accountable. For what it’s worth, Mitchell served 19 months for conspiracy, perjury and obstruction of justice. I’m looking forward to that trial.

The Seeker returned to the great tree carrying peace inside her like a small bowl filled to the rim. She walked the way one walks with a full cup — slow, attentive, arms slightly out from her body, as though the world above might jostle her and spill everything she had carried up from the last descent, where she discovered The Field of Peace.

It had not lasted the way she hoped.

After the Agreement, she had believed — for a few bright days — that peace was simply a thing one learned, the way a hand learns a knot. But the world above had tested that learning almost before her boots dried. Someone she loved had behaved badly, and badly again. Someone else had gone frightened and sharp-edged, striking at anyone who came near. A colleague had spoken words that left small wounds in the room and then called the wounding necessary. Friends had begun sorting themselves into sides, the way birds sort themselves onto wires before a storm. Leave now, before it costs you more, some whispered. Stay and say nothing, others insisted, that is what loyalty means.

The Seeker had stood between those two counsels and found neither one peaceful.

Abandon them or abandon herself? This seemed the choice -- betrayal the only certainty.

She had carried that impossible arithmetic back to the roots. Eagle Man Guide was waiting in the seam of the bark, wings folded close, and he did not ask what had happened. He studied her the way he always studied her — as if her face were a page he was translating from a language older than her own.

“You have brought something heavy.” he noted.

“Yes.” her voice carried the weight.

“Does it belong to you?” he asked.

“I don’t know.” she said slowly.

“Then we should find out.”

He stepped back, and the opening breathed cool air against her face, smelling of wet stone and something green just beginning to root. Together, they descended. The passage was never the same twice — she had learned that much. Tonight the roots did not spiral into the long dark she remembered. They widened, gently, the way a throat widens into breath, until the earth opened beneath her feet and released her into a valley she had never seen. The sight stopped her where she stood.

Hundreds of small lanterns burned across the meadow, hung from low branches, set beside blankets spread under the trees, floating their soft light over faces bent toward one another in conversation. Somewhere a fire popped and threw the smell of onions and rosemary into the air. A woman knelt behind another woman, working a wooden basin of water through her hair, both of them laughing about something the Seeker would never know. Two men crouched over the broken wheel of a cart while a child held a lantern steady for their hands, solemn with the importance of the task. Near the tree line, a fox slept with its nose tucked beneath its tail, one ear turned toward the valley as if even in sleep it kept watch. No one hurried. No one seemed to be in charge.

“What is this place?” The Seeker’s curiosity was piqued.

Eagle Man Guide’s eyes caught the lantern light. “The Field of Care.”

Sitri came along the path with a basket of warm bread balanced against her hip. Hecate followed with a clay pitcher beaded with condensation, and several of the animal companions trailed behind them, unhurried, the way water follows the shape of a valley without needing to be told where to go.

The Seeker looked out over the meadow. “It seems peaceful.”

“Sometimes,” Sitri said, and there was something in the way she said it — not warning, exactly, but readiness. She had barely finished with a shout rose from the direction of the river.

Two figures stood arguing beside a footbridge. One had thrown down a bundle of sticks; they lay scattered like something broken. The other stood pointing toward the water, voice cracking on the second or third word. Heads turned across the meadow, but no one ran toward them. No one ran away, either.

A woman carrying vegetables set her basket in the grass and walked toward the bridge. An older man rose from his blanket and followed a few steps behind her. They stopped an arm’s length from the two arguing figures, close enough to matter, far enough not to crowd. The Seeker expected someone to silence them, the way she had always expected conflict to be handled — swiftly, before it could spread like a spark in dry grass.

Instead the woman asked, quietly, “What is needed here?”

The question did not end the argument. The angry man remained angry. The other kept her arms crossed hard against her chest. But something in the air changed pitch. The shouting became words. The words, eventually, became sentences someone else could stand to hear.

Sitri handed the Seeker a heel of bread, still warm enough to feel like a small animal in her palm. As she did, she commented on the sight before them. “This field is not built by people behaving perfectly.”

“Then what holds it together?” asked the Seeker.

“Care.” was Sitri’s one-word response.

The Seeker turned the word over. “That sounds too simple.”

“Most sacred things do sound simple, until you try to live inside them.” Sitri said with a wry smile.

They walked on, and the meadow began to reveal what her first glance had missed. There were boundaries here, quiet as fence lines under snow. A man who had grown too loud with drink was being led from the common fire by two friends, one hand at each of his elbows — no shaming, no announcement, only a steady removal, the way you’d lead a horse that had spooked. Beneath a broad oak, a woman sat alone with her knees drawn to her chest. Someone had left bread and a cup of water within her reach. No one had pretended the harm she’d caused was nothing. No one had driven her from the valley either. She simply sat in the space the field had made for her — held in safety, where self-reflection was present. Boundary-held so harm would be discontinued.

At another fire, two people sat facing each other with Hecate seated cross-legged between them like a low wall made of patience. One wept without trying to stop. The other stared at a spot on the ground as though it might answer for him. Witnessing was a step in their restoration of wholeness.

“What happens,” the Seeker asked, “if someone becomes dangerous?”

“We protect the field of care,” Eagle Man Guide said.

“And if they refuse to change?” as the Seeker considered those in her life.

“Then distance may become part of care.”

The Seeker stopped walking. “So people are abandoned here after all.”

Sitri shook her head, unhurried. “There is a difference between abandoning someone and refusing to participate in their harm.”

The words moved through the Seeker slowly, the way cold water moves through a hand held too long in a stream — first shock, then a strange, clarifying ache. Sitri walked on. “Humans often confuse care with endless access or lack of boundaries. You may believe that loving someone means opening every room of your life to them.” She turned, the lantern light catching the line of her jaw. “It does not.”

They came, after a time, to a ring of stones circling a young tree. Storm-broken branches leaned against wooden braces, bark split pale at the wounds, sap beading like slow amber tears.

The Seeker touched one branch carefully. “What happens if it can’t be saved?”

“We cut it,” Sitri said.

“That doesn’t sound like care, it sounds like amputation.” the Seeker could feel her heart clench.

“It is care for the tree.” she said as she laid a warm hand on the Seeker’s arm.

The Seeker looked at the splintered limb, its raw wood catching moonlight. “And the branch?”

“We honor what it was. We do not hate it for breaking.”

They sat beneath the tree together. Across the valley a flute began somewhere, its notes rising and dissolving into the dark like smoke. The smell of onions and rosemary drifted past again, warmer now, mixed with woodsmoke. Eagle Man Guide stretched his wings behind him and let them settle. “The world above has built its houses around other foundations.”

“Profit,” the Seeker said, then continued. “Power. Winning.”

“Yes.” He inclined his head.

“Imagine, instead, that beneath every decision the first question was: what does this protect in the field?“

The idea seemed, for a moment, embarrassingly simple. And then she felt the size of it, the way you feel the size of an ocean only once your feet have already left the sand.

“What happens to ambition?” the Seeker queried.

“It remains.” he stated.

“Competition?”

“Sometimes.”

“Leadership?”

“Of course.”

Sitri laughed, low and warm. “Care does not ask everyone to become small. It only asks whether your greatness requires someone else’s diminishment.”

Nearby, a child stumbled over a root and went down hard, crying out. Three adults turned at once, without discussion, without hesitation. One reached the child first, knelt in the wet grass, examined the scraped knee, murmured something too quiet to carry — and soon the child was running again, the hurt already folding itself into the evening.

No council had been summoned. No one had issued an order. The field itself had simply answered, the way a body answers pain before the mind has finished naming it.

Something loosened in the Seeker’s chest. She thought of the poem she had helped speak into the meadow once before, its lines still living somewhere under her ribs — peace is not the absence of conflict, peace is the refusal to abandon one another while learning how to hold it. She had thought, that night, she understood the words. Now she understood they had only been waiting for her to walk among people who lived them badly, and kept trying anyway.

Perhaps care was not sentimentality. Perhaps it was architecture — a thousand small agreements laid like stone beneath everything else, invisible until something leaned its weight against them and did not fall. The woman who asked what is needed instead of choosing a side. The friends who led a drunken man away without making him small. The bread and water left beside a woman no one had forgiven yet. The branch, braced or cut, honored either way.

The Seeker thought of the people waiting for her above — family, friends, colleagues, people she loved, people who frightened her, people who had disappointed her, and, if she was honest in this light, people she had disappointed in turn.

“I don’t know how to fix this,” she said quietly.

Eagle Man Guide looked genuinely surprised. “That was never your work.”

“Then what is?”

He lifted one wing toward the valley, its shadow sweeping briefly over the grass, over the lanterns, over the sleeping fox. “Tend the field.”

She breathed in the cooling air. Somewhere beyond the last ring of trees, an owl called once and went quiet. Sitri rose and offered her hand. “Come. There is still bread to carry.”

The Seeker took it and stood. There was no revelation waiting at the end of this path. No monster to defeat, no relic to carry home. Only bread. Water carried in a clay pitcher. A branch braced or released. A question asked instead of a side chosen. The stubborn, unglamorous refusal to believe that difficulty must always end in someone’s exile.

They walked together toward the nearest fire, adding their small measure to the valley of lanterns — one more pair of hands the field could lean on, one more voice it could hold. And so the field continued.

Not finished. Tended. Again and again. Always.

Feeling Whole as Part of Life

I have a poem that I read aloud most mornings. It’s a new habit that helps me maintain a sense of wholeness, despite the chaos of the world. It has inspired a mystical story titled “The Field of Peace“ where I imagine what peace feels like as the presence of justice. That imagining is a break from my past understanding of peace as a place of relief from chaos. Relief from chaos is not true peace.

Chaos presents itself as squabbles and differences of opinion, creating uncertainty about the future. Life itself is filled with conflict and chaos. By choosing peace as the presence of justice, we can find a way forward to feeling whole as part of life itself. It is a perspective shift of momentous importance for the continuation of our nation, where our liberty and sense of justice are aligned.

This is the message of Jesus in the New Testament, as I understand it. We commit to honoring our neighbor as ourselves. We care for the most vulnerable among us. We include those who have been marginalized. We turn over the tables of the money lenders who poison our temple with greed.

The Old Testament (aka the Hebrew Bible) tells stories about the wrath of G-d and offers “eye for an eye” as a system of justice. This type of justice leaves people broken and families wounded. There is never enough understanding to end the conflict. Each side feels the unfairness of the situation, and that adds trauma on top of trauma.

The New Testament message includes a path to restoration of wholeness. The presence of justice is a system where we witness each other, in all our anger and pain and suffering. Restorative justice is based on the philosophy that everyone has been harmed and everyone can be made whole again. It takes a commitment not to abandon one another when harm happens.

Accountability is essential to this work. And yes, it is hard to look into ourselves and see how we have harmed others — to acknowledge that through neglect, disbelief, action and inaction, we cause harm to those around us, not usually on purpose. To be alive is to participate in this dance of harm and repair.

In our nation, we are in a state of conflict, obviously. I’m reminded, too, of the Pledge of Allegiance I said every morning in school. We have stopped reciting this except in public meetings. I think it’s important to note this pledge could help bind us together around a common set of principles.

There has been, and will continue to be, conflict around the Pledge of Allegiance. In 1943, the Supreme Court ruled it could not be made mandatory. In 1954, the words “under God” were added during the Red Scare/Cold War. And by the early 2000s, many schools had moved away from mandatory daily recitation, though several states still require it today. Here’s the pledge, in case you’ve forgotten it.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.”

We are in a state of conflict, choosing what liberty and justice for all means today, in 2026. And for whom.

My Take

In the vast global human trafficking network that has exposed the Epstein Class in its power-seeking depravity, there is one thing that everyone can agree on. It’s that Ghislaine Maxwell, the only person convicted in related crimes, should not be pardoned. I agree she should not be pardoned.

Evidently, the US Senate can find this one thing to agree on, too. This week, they voted unanimously on a non-binding resolution to oppose any pardon or clemency from the president.

If only they could be so resolute when it comes to investigating and prosecuting the men, too. If there has ever been a case that highlights the disparity of treatment between men and women, this is it.

Why do powerful men stonewall investigations and get away with nothing more than a settlement and some reputational harm? The women (in this case, Maxwell) who conspired get jail time.

The same files that document her conduct also document the conduct of dozens of powerful men — men who paid Epstein sums some victims and reporters have described as closer to blackmail than compensation, who flew with him, corresponded with him, and in several documented cases knew about his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor and continued the relationship anyway. No man has completed a criminal trial tied to the network. Everyone else has faced, at most, a civil settlement, a stripped title, or a regulatory ban. The Senate could unite instantly around punishing the one woman in this story. It has not managed the same unity, or the same urgency, about the men.

Start with what the Department of Justice itself has said. Todd Blanche — who took over as acting Attorney General after Pam Bondi was removed from the post this spring — told Congress this year that after reviewing the files, there was “nothing in there that allowed us to prosecute anybody” beyond Epstein and Maxwell. Legal analysts have laid out the reasons: the reasonable-doubt standard, the difficulty of proving conspiracy intent after the fact, statutes of limitations that ran out years ago on the financial crimes several associates might otherwise face, and redactions that strip the documents of the very context prosecutors would need. Some of what’s described in the files, in the government’s own language, is “awful but lawful.”

“Awful but lawful” has had a way of applying almost exclusively to men. The powerful and wealthy know how to run out the clock. Non-cooperation means witnesses and victims forget or die, the statute of limitations runs out, or the accused themselves die, without ever facing trial.

(Former Prince) Andrew paid Virginia Giuffre a reported $12 to $15 million to settle her civil suit, admitted no wrongdoing, and has never faced a U.S. criminal charge. He lost his titles. He did not lose his freedom. Leon Black paid Epstein roughly $158 million for “tax and estate planning,” called him his “best friend” in a birthday note, and when Congress asked him to turn over the non-disclosure agreements he’d signed with his own accusers, he walked out of the hearing. No charges. Bill Gates testified that he knew about Epstein’s crimes and kept the relationship going regardless, describing it afterward as a “grave error in judgment” — a phrase that has done a great deal of work protecting a great deal of money. Alan Dershowitz has simply refused to testify at all.

Settlements, resignations, apologies, walkouts — a full menu of consequences that stops short of the one that was applied to Maxwell.

This is not a coincidence of evidence. It looks like a pattern of protection. Two of the men who might have stood beside Maxwell in a courtroom didn’t live to see one: Epstein and modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel both died by apparent suicide in custody before trial. A third, French model scout Daniel Siad, was under investigation and reportedly close to arrest when he died at home this July; his lawyer believes it was a heart attack brought on by the pressure of the case, and the autopsy found no signs of violence. Convenient, either way, for the men who are still alive and still untouched.

The Institute to Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation put the sharper point on it directly: when the sole person criminally punished in an elite trafficking network is a woman, while the men who built and funded and used that network face civil settlements at worst, the legal system isn’t just failing to prosecute — it is quietly ratifying the idea that women are the ones who answer for what men demand and then arrange.

This is an argument for consistency. If the Senate can find unanimous conviction that Ghislaine Maxwell must serve every year of her sentence, it can find the same conviction that the men named alongside her — some by their own admission — deserve more than a settlement check and a stripped title. Survivors and their advocates have already told Congress what that consistency would look like: “Virginia’s Law” would eliminate the civil statute of limitations on federal sex trafficking crimes, so that the men whose culpability outlasted the legal clock can still be reached. That bill exists. It has not moved with anything like the speed of a symbolic resolution against a woman already behind bars. For what it’s worth, there is not a statute of limitations on criminal liability for sex trafficking, either — which makes the absence of criminal charges even harder to explain away.

It’s as if generations of lawmakers — mostly men — have wrapped the law in knots to protect themselves from criminal prosecution for acting on their depravity in harming others. This really pisses me off.

The pattern doesn’t stop at the water’s edge. In February, independent human rights experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council reviewed the same files and concluded that the scale and character of what they describe “may reasonably meet the legal threshold of crimes against humanity” — a designation reserved for the gravest conduct international law recognizes. That is not a fringe assessment. It is, on paper, the most serious label available.

If the DOJ is covering up evidence and the Congressional committees cannot find the will or the votes to continue investigating all the perpetrators beyond stonewalling, we need a new level of accountability. This is a global human trafficking ring. Let the International Criminal Court (ICC) take over. There are, as expected, obstructionists in the way here, too. Top of the list is Todd Blanche, who noted in a letter to the ICC’s president that any assertion of authority by the ICC was illegitimate and unlawful. The United States has, under this administration, also sanctioned ICC judges. Accountability is elusive.

No referral has been made to the ICC by prosecutors in another nation nor by the UN Security Council. Here too, the survivors from all over the world wait for justice. Unanimity is supposed to mean a society has found its moral floor. What we actually have is a floor with a very specific shape — one that holds under a woman and gives way under the men who stood next to her.

Every door that could lead to a courtroom has a specific, lawyerly reason it’s closed, and all of them happen to close in the same direction, protecting the men who preyed upon girls and young women.

Shame on us all.

Vance, a former U.S. Attorney, argues Sullivan’s decision to demand documentation backing DOJ’s redaction claims — rather than taking the department’s word for it — reflects a broader collapse of the courts’ “presumption of regularity” toward this DOJ. We love sports. The thrill of competition where anything can happen. The GOAT can conquer or the underdog can achieve a miracle. We love the stories and the feelings that we have when watching or re-living one of these great moments.

Politics in the USA is often analogized to being a sporting event. We have two teams that battle it out. There are leagues and series. Schedules to keep us entertained year-round. Scores to keep as we count up seats in the House and Senate. The electoral college -- which is the stupidest score card of all.

Here’s the question that bears a little pondering: Is self-governance best served as a sporting event?

I think not. Self-governance should be about the process of setting priorities, creating a just society where all can thrive. Not about score keeping and cheering on our team at the expense of our fellow citizens.

What would it take to shift from “winner take all” politics to allow those elected to do the mundane work of governing? Who do we need to become as citizens?

Start with why the sports metaphor is so sticky. A game gives us what governing never will: a final whistle, a clear winner, a scoreboard we can check at halftime. Our brains love this binary. We’re wired for resolution, not for the open-ended mess of building consensus among 340 million people with different needs. Sports offer an ending. Self-governance doesn’t -- it’s supposed to keep going, administration after administration, compromise after compromise, with no team ever getting to hoist the trophy and go home.

That’s the part we’ve lost sight of: what governing actually looks like when it’s working. It’s not a touchdown. It’s a committee markup nobody watched. It’s a budget that satisfies no one completely because it accounts for every stakeholder in the room, not just the ones cheering loudest. It’s a coalition that holds together long enough to fund a bridge, fix a school, or keep the lights on -- then dissolves and reforms around the next problem. The work of governance is slow and often invisible, which is exactly why it doesn’t survive contact with a 24-hour news cycle built to reward conflict over competence.

That’s the other engine keeping the sports frame alive: attention. Horse-race coverage, cable news as ESPN for Congress, algorithms that promote outrage because outrage keeps us watching. We didn’t choose the metaphor so much as it was sold to us, one ratings cycle at a time. Fandom is profitable. Citizenship, done well, is quiet -- and quiet doesn’t sell ads.

So who do we need to become? Citizens who can tolerate an outcome that isn’t a win. Who can disagree with a neighbor without needing them to lose. People who measure a good outcome not by whether “our side” got everything, but by whether the result is one we can actually live with, together. That’s a different kind of citizen than the one built by decades of scorekeeping -- one who shows up not to cheer, but to participate: testify at a hearing, read the actual bill, vote in the primary nobody covers, serve on the school board no one live-tweets.

Structure can help make that citizen more common. Ranked-choice voting, multi-member districts, citizens’ assemblies chosen by lottery instead of campaign -- these don’t eliminate disagreement, but they reward coalition-building over tribal loyalty. They make “get to 51% of the room” a better strategy than “destroy the other team.” Changing incentives changes behavior faster than changing hearts and minds does, and we’ll need both.

So what is the finish line for our nation? Maybe that’s the wrong question. America was never built to cross a line and stop -- it was built to hold a tension, permanently: my rights and our rights, my effort and our justice, never fully resolved and never meant to be. The finish line only shows up when we stop holding both sides of that tension and let one side win outright. Let “winner take all” decide it for us, and we get the end of the Constitution -- not the end of America, just the end of the parts that require us to keep showing up for each other. But trade the scoreboard for the balance beam, and we get the other version: a nation still becoming, where each of us has room to build the life we choose through our own effort, inside a society just enough to make that effort worth something. That’s not a finish line. That’s the work -- ongoing, unglamorous and ours.

Six months into sorting through 3.5 million pages, the shape of this story is becoming clear — and it isn’t the story the Justice Department wanted us to read.

For most of this year, DOJ’s strategy has been delay: incomplete releases, unexplained redactions, a legally required redaction log it simply never published, a legal team that treats court orders as opening offers rather than instructions. This week, that strategy started to crack. Judge Sullivan didn’t just tell Blanche to comply — he stopped taking DOJ’s word for it and ordered the department to prove, document by document, that its redactions are what it claims. That’s a court openly signaling it no longer extends DOJ the ordinary benefit of the doubt. Stalling has a shelf life, and DOJ may be nearing the end of it.

But stalling has already cost something that can’t be undone. Daniel Siad — one of the people who could have told investigators the most about how Epstein’s recruitment network actually worked — is dead, days after French prosecutors described him as close to arrest. He’s the second person with direct, damning knowledge of Epstein’s operation to die suddenly rather than testify, after Jean-Luc Brunel in 2022. Congress’s process isn’t built for urgency. Subpoenas take weeks to threaten and months to enforce. Every month DOJ succeeds in running out the clock is a month someone who knows the truth about co-conspirators may not survive to tell it.

Into that vacuum — DOJ’s silence, Congress’s slow pace, and now a body count — speculation is rushing in. Some of it may hold up. Much of it won’t. Claims about intelligence handlers and blackmail operations spread faster than they can be checked, and the less the official record tells us, the more room there is for unverified theories to look like the only explanation on offer. That’s not a reason to dismiss every uncomfortable claim; it’s a reason to want the actual investigative work DOJ still hasn’t done — interviewing Karyna Shuliak, for instance, who managed Epstein’s properties and staff for years and has never once been questioned by the FBI or deposed by a single victim’s lawyer.

Congress is starting to fill that gap out of necessity, not because DOJ asked it to. Raskin’s foreign-agent inquiry, Comer’s subpoena threat against Dershowitz, the pressure campaign that forced Blanche to at least sit in a room with survivors — none of it is DOJ doing its job, but it’s oversight doing DOJ’s job for it.

The clearest reason for optimism this week isn’t a headline — it’s a bill. The Epstein Files Transparency Act II would strip away DOJ’s central excuse, that survivors, state attorneys general, and Congress lack standing to force compliance, by giving them the power to sue directly. It won’t compel new interviews or bring anyone back. But it closes the loophole DOJ has been using to run out the clock.

Six months in, that’s the throughline: obstruction is losing ground in the courts, but the people that obstruction was protecting are running out of time to be questioned. The truth is still emerging. The real question is whether it comes from the people who could tell it firsthand — or only from what’s left once DOJ has run out the clock.

A Quiet Erosion of Your Rights

Nobody sent you a letter. There was no announcement on the news that said, as of today, this protection you’ve always had works a little differently now. That’s the thing about how rights change in practice — it almost never happens all at once, with a headline you can point to. It happens through a court filing, a personnel memo, an agency rule change, a quiet decision not to enforce something anymore. By the time it’s visible enough to make the news, it’s often already been true for months.

Here’s what that’s looked like over the past year and a half, in plain terms.

Your personal information got less private, without your consent. A team with sweeping access to federal computer systems — run by people who were never confirmed by the Senate for the job — pulled Social Security numbers, tax records, and other sensitive data out of the government systems that are supposed to guard it. Lawsuits are still working through whether that access was legal. Whether it was or wasn’t, the data was already accessed. You cannot get that back.

If you ever need a lawyer to fight the government — over a wrongful denial, a civil rights violation, anything — the pool of firms willing to take that case just got smaller. Several major law firms were threatened with losing their security clearances and courthouse access simply for representing clients the administration didn’t like. Courts ruled that illegal. Even so, some firms settled quietly rather than risk it, which means fewer lawyers now are willing to be the ones who say yes to a case like yours.

If your case ever ends up in front of a federal judge, you may not know which judges on the bench today were personally close to the president in ways judges traditionally weren’t — including one who was the president’s own criminal defense lawyer before he became a lifetime appellate judge (Boge). That doesn’t mean any individual ruling is unfair. It means the assumption that the judge has no personal stake in the outcome, which the whole system depends on, is a little shakier than it used to be, and you’d have no way of knowing that inside the courtroom.

Your vote counts a little differently depending on where you live. Congressional districts in several states were redrawn outside the normal once-a-decade schedule specifically to change which party’s votes matter more, and the Supreme Court just weakened the main legal tool that used to catch maps drawn to dilute the voting power of Black and Latino communities. Separately, people close to the administration floated sending immigration agents to polling places this fall — an idea officials walked back, but only after several states passed laws to explicitly ban it, meaning it was a real enough threat that lawmakers felt they had to act. A separate push to require proof of citizenship to register would trip up an estimated 69 million married women who don’t have a birth certificate matching their current legal name, and it would fall hardest on people of color, who are already overrepresented among Americans who lack easy access to that paperwork in the first place.

None of this has landed on everyone the same way. A federal judge didn’t have to infer bias in one case — she found that the review process used to cancel a wave of humanities grants explicitly sorted them by race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation, and the grants that got cut leaned toward Black history, women’s studies, and Native American history.

Immigration raids and detention, up 84% in a year, land almost entirely on Latino and immigrant communities, simply because of who federal immigration agents have authority over. National Guard troops have had the longest deployments in Washington, D.C. and Memphis, two cities where Black residents are the majority — in D.C.’s case, deployed over the objection of the city’s own elected government, which has never had a senator to answer to. The D.C. deployment has been extended to January 2029 for no reasonable explanation.

If you work for the federal government, or you’re used to trusting that career employees will flag a bad decision even under political pressure, that safety net is thinner. Thousands of career employees lost job protections that used to shield them from being fired for political reasons. And if you get your news from an outlet that’s ever criticized the president, reporters there may already be facing subpoenas over their sources — which changes what shows up in your feed even if you never notice the story that didn’t get written.

None of this happened through a single dramatic event you’d have caught on the news. It happened through the ordinary machinery of government — appointments, agency memos, lawsuits, funding decisions — which is exactly why it’s easy to miss. That doesn’t mean everyone agrees on what it adds up to. Plenty of thoughtful people would tell you some of these changes are lawful, overdue, or simply how elected leaders are supposed to use the power voters gave them, and that reading deserves real consideration too.

What hasn’t changed, so far, is that the formal machinery still works when someone uses it: courts have kept blocking illegal orders, including one just this month; the 2026 primaries ran on schedule and competitively in both parties; and the press has kept publishing stories it was pressured not to.

That machinery only works if the people running it are willing to, and that part is getting harder. This July, the Homeland Security Secretary threatened every state’s top election official with fines, lost funding, or even prison time over a voter-roll demand a judge had already ruled illegal. One county clerk says she was threatened with being dragged out of her office. More than half of local election workers now say they’re worried about political interference, and roughly 75 people who worked on election security across three federal agencies have resigned, been forced out, or watched their teams get dismantled. A court can still strike down a bad policy — but only if the person it landed on is still in the job, and still willing, to fight it.

Noticing what’s shifted is the first step toward deciding, for yourself, whether it should stay that way.

My Take

It was a busy week of talking about the Epstein Files. Talking, talking, talking. I’m tired of all the talking about the Epstein Files without substantive action to investigate what is in them. What is missing for me is the action required to hold people accountable.

Overall, Blanche has refused to:

Meet with survivors until threatened with non-confirmation. (Confirmation is still uncertain.)
Comply with a court-ordered release of eight specific emails to journalist Katie Phang.
Release any unredacted files to state and local prosecutors, like New Mexico. There are others.
Hand over the unredacted 2015 memo on suspicious money transfers tied to Epstein and 14 associates to the Senate Finance Committee.
Commit to prosecuting abusers, telling survivors to, “bring information to the FBI.”
Explain the Ghislaine Maxwell transfer beyond “safety concerns” after interviewing her in person, where she claimed the president was not involved.
Confirm or deny the vice president’s remarks that the administration “mishandled” the Epstein Files release.
Release the additional 2.5 million files in any form -- to anyone.

When asked about his relationship to the president, Blanche made a slip of the tongue and said “I’m his lawyer,” then catching himself, saying “I was his lawyer.” It seems like he accidentally blurted out the truth.

I want more of the truth. All of it, in fact.

This story is so vast and complicated, it is easy to get lost, turn away or wait for someone else to simplify it. The complexity is why it is so hard to prosecute. That should not be an excuse to avoid examining this rotten cancer inside the Epstein Class and our government, where people believe they are above the law.

Where prosecutions are stymied, public shaming and private accountability continue to unfold.

This week, Warren Buffett announced he would no longer donate to the Gates Foundation, redirecting a $4.5B Berkshire donation to family-linked foundations. Buffett changed his mind and his pledge after the “distasteful” connection between Bill Gates and Jeffrey Epstein was revealed.

Others in corporate leadership are being invited to speak with the House Oversight Committee. Or subpoenaed, as needs must. Upcoming are Jes Staley, Alan Dershowitz and Leon Black (again).

Eagle Man Guide waited among the roots, wings folded close, dark against the pale morning mist. He did not greet her with a question. He simply studied her, seeing the exhaustion she had tried to disguise as determination.

“I am so tired,” she finally said.

“I know.”

“No — tired beneath tired. Tired in my bones. Tired in whatever lies beneath the bones.”

He stepped aside, revealing the opening between the roots.

She looked into the darkness and sighed. “Of course we are going down.”

“Where else would we go to find what has been buried?”

She placed one hand against the Tree’s ancient bark and stepped down into the passage.

They descended slowly. At first the sounds of the upper world followed them — marching feet, one voice trying to overpower another, accusations repeated until they hardened into certainty. Frightened people insisting their fear gave them permission to control others. Those who claimed to love freedom, demanding obedience. “I do not want to dominate anyone,” she said.

“No. But exhaustion can make domination look like relief. When we can no longer bear the presence of another, erasure begins to resemble peace.”

The corridor opened into the underworld forest. Night lay across the trees, though stars shimmered overhead as if the sky had descended with them. Fox emerged from the ferns. Wolf stood beneath the cedars. Owl watched from a low branch. A great doe stepped from the shadows and bowed her head. No one hurried The Seeker. No one demanded she explain what she was carrying. The companions simply walked beside her.

The trees thinned, and ahead she saw a wide meadow, silvery in the moonlight, more people gathered there than she could count. Hecate stood sentry at the edge holding two torches. Sitri sat with her hands open upon her knees like another sentry. The guides, ancestors and companions formed a great circle — but there was no council fire at its center.

There was only grass.

“Where is the fire?”

“Tonight, the field replaced the campfire,” Eagle Man Guide said.

As they stepped in, the people shifted to make room. Some wore clothing from distant times and places. Some bore the marks of war. Children stood beside elders, strangers beside former enemies, people whose lives would never have fit neatly together above. The Seeker felt her body tense — the old instinct to sort. Friend or enemy. One of us or one of them.

Hecate raised a torch. “Before you enter the field, you must lay down what cannot live here.”

“I brought nothing,” The Seeker said, referring to her lack of possessions.

“You brought many things.”

At the edge of the meadow lay a low stone basin holding crowns, chains, gavels, swords, shields, banners, masks — each left there by someone in the circle.

“What am I supposed to leave?”

“Your pretense or need to be innocent,” Sitri said, rising to stand beside the basin. “You know the harm domination causes. You have witnessed the cruelty of people who seek to extinguish difference. But you cannot enter a field of peace carrying the belief that the impulse exists only in others.”

A small white stone appeared in her hand, smooth and flawless.

“What is that?”

“The certainty that you are entirely unlike those you oppose.”

She held it — small, but surprisingly heavy. She remembered every moment she had stopped listening because she already believed she understood. Every fantasy in which peace arrived only after the people she feared had been humiliated, defeated, cast out.

She placed the stone in the basin. Something within her loosened.

Hecate lowered her torch and gestured toward the meadow.

The grass was cool beneath The Seeker’s feet. She sat between Eagle Man Guide and an old woman whose face was lined like a river map. Across from her, a young man with anger burning visibly in his eyes; beside him, a woman whose body trembled whenever he moved. A child sat between two elders who would not look at one another. This was not the peaceful gathering she had imagined. The air was thick with grief, suspicion, unfinished arguments.

“This is a field of peace?”

“What did you expect?”

“Calm. Harmony. People speaking softly.”

“Soft voices can carry violence. Silence can conceal terror. Harmony can be forced.” He paused. “No one here is required to disappear or pretend to be someone they are not.”

At the center of the field, the grass began to move, though there was no wind. A ripple traveled outward and passed beneath her, into her body. The old woman beside her breathed — once, then again. Across the circle, the angry young man breathed with her, not knowing he did. The trembling woman’s breath joined theirs. The children, the elders, the animals followed. Hundreds of bodies inhaled. Sitri walked to the center carrying a sheet of paper and held it against her heart.

“I am afraid of him,” the trembling woman said. The young man looked stricken.

“You do not get to tell her she is wrong,” Sitri said.

“And she does not get to decide that your life has no place in this circle,” Hecate added.

The woman looked toward him. Her fear remained, but something else appeared beside it — the recognition that peace did not require her to surrender her boundaries. She could move farther away. She could ask others to stand between them. She could name what she needed in order to remain. Peace did not demand closeness without safety. “Peace is not helplessness. There are times a body must be stopped from harming another body. But protection is different from domination. Protection seeks to end the harm. Domination seeks to own the person.”

“How do we know the difference?”

“We ask what we are trying to preserve. Dignity or control? Life or power? Relationship or victory?”

Dawn began to gather beneath the horizon. The community rose — not as one people with one belief. Their disagreements remained. Their histories remained. Some wounds would require generations of tending. But before departing, each person knelt and placed a hand against the earth. The Seeker followed. Beneath her palm she felt thousands of heartbeats — the living, the dead, those not yet born, joined in a rhythm older than any nation. The earth did not ask which side they had chosen.

When The Seeker and Eagle Man Guide began the journey home, she carried nothing in her hands. The bone-deep exhaustion had not disappeared, but it no longer felt like emptiness. It felt like a field lying fallow, waiting to be restored.

At the foot of the Great Tree, just before they emerged into the upper world, Eagle Man Guide stopped.

“What will you do when the shouting begins again?”

Above them she could already hear it: threats disguised as conviction, contempt disguised as courage, domination disguised as peace.

She placed a hand over her heart.

“I will remember that peace is not something I wait for other people to create.”

“And when you are afraid?”

“I will seek protection without worshiping control.”

“And when you are angry?”

“I will tell the truth without surrendering another person’s humanity.”

“And when you cannot remain beside someone?”

“I will step away without pretending they have ceased to belong to the Earth.”

Eagle Man Guide nodded. The Seeker climbed through the roots and into the morning.

The world had not changed while she was below. Borders remained. Weapons remained. Old hatreds waited impatiently for new mouths to speak through. But beneath them all, another agreement was breathing. She felt it under every footstep — the memory of hundreds of bodies breathing together beneath the stars.

Then she stepped back into the troubled world, carrying the field within her.

In a World of Ugliness, Look for Beauty

We are invited to view the ugliness of our society and humanity daily. The algorithms feed us more of what catches our attention, as my friend Brenda has written about here and here. In her essays, she points to the 90-9-1 rule: one percent of us highlight “the ugly,” and nine percent of us share it. The rest of us — the 90% — are exhausted by it, recipients of a doom-loop we don’t know how, or want badly enough, to escape.

Yet we must find the will to escape it, because this doom-loop isn’t only a personal affliction — it’s a civic one. Outrage is profitable: for the platforms that sell our attention, and for the Conflict Profiteers in politics and media who have learned that a frightened, divided citizenry is easier to manipulate than a trusting one. When we come to know our neighbors mainly through their worst moments, curated and amplified for engagement, we lose something self-governance actually requires — the ability to recognize each other as fully human, even across real disagreement. A nation that cannot see its own people clearly cannot govern itself wisely. Escaping the doom-loop, then, isn’t a retreat from civic life. It’s a precondition for it.

So what do we do to escape?

Recently, I saw a video and photos one of my colleagues posted. It showed a lovely waterfall in the Philippines, with her meanering happily along a trail, calling it the “Aw-Awesome” Falls. As I watched her happiness in being surrounded by the beauty of nature, I paused to really take it in. I could imagine myself there, giggling with ourselves and the secret pleasure that our hike led us to such beauty. I’ve had those hikes before with other girlfriends — silly antics, as if we hadn’t a care in the world but for the current moment. For those few moments, I had escaped the doom-loop.

When was the last time you went seeking beauty? And by beauty, I’m including a sense of awe and wonder.

This is what makes escaping the doom-loop “worth it.” We don’t get out of our current troubles without changing our behavior and our mindsets. If we want to experience more beauty and carefree moments, we must practice doing so. We must habituate our minds to feeling awe, wonder, and carefreeness in ways that our brains record. Then we need to repeat it 10,000 times* so the neural pathways become stronger than the doom-loop trails.

This practice of seeking beauty, awe, and wonder is the certain path to a future we prefer — and to a democracy that can hold all of us. It is through this practice that we stop being the product of social media, sold to commercial and political interests, and become the human beings — and citizens — we like best.

It doesn’t take long to create a daily moment of awe. Or several. Mine include sitting in my meditation chair watching the backyard for what’s happening. Today, there were frolicking fawns. Very awesome! In the evening, it’s my quiet satisfaction over a clean kitchen before bed, and appreciation for my awesome kitchen. Time magazine published an article about awe improving our mental health — which I found as I was writing! That is wondrous in timing. Hopeful, too.

My Take

The Department of Justice should be renamed as “The Department of Injustice and Coverup for Powerful People.” Certainly, we are not seeing the DOJ follow the law it is chartered to uphold. This is how government collapses happen when The People no longer see benefit for themselves in democracy. What comes next will be a period of chaos followed by slow rebuilding. While I mourn the effort and time it will take, we will come out better, wiser and with a reset on the rule of law. A new social contract is already being explored.

There is much un-examined evidence in the released and withheld Epstein Files. Un-examined on purpose, to disallow corroboration or investigation to hold pedophiles, money launderers, human traffickers and other criminals accountable. From what has been released -- the least prosecutable information -- we have seen how the global elite, aka the “Epstein Class,” act outside of the law.

Refusing to examine evidence is what leads to “uncorroborated” statements, a tactic used to discredit the survivors. The survivors have provided names, dates, locations and their personal safety into our hands, asking for justice.

Let those who are accused be called to testify, under oath. Let the investigations occur without hindrance. Let us break up the cabal of global manipulation and greed, sex trafficking and pedophilia rings to restore our shared humanity with dignity for all.

Until that happens, we continue to live through the implosion of our shared integrity.

The old tree stood at the forest’s edge, wider than memory, its roots rising from the earth like the backs of sleeping dragons. She pressed her palm to the bark and felt the pulse beneath it. The tree was alive in more than one world. Sap moved through it. Time moved through it. So did grief.

“I am here,” she whispered.

The bark softened under her hand. A seam opened in the trunk, dark and narrow, breathing out rain and moss and something burned long ago. She stepped inside.

Clean wood. Not grand. Not chosen by the old order of importance or status. Clean.

Sitri rose and turned to the people. “The poisoned fire must go out.”

A cry moved through the clearing — not only protest. Terror. The people had been harmed by the fire, but they had also survived by its light. Even a cruel flame can grow familiar. Even a poisoned center can feel like the only center there is.

The Seeker looked at the fire and saw, now, what she had missed before — beneath the flames, old offerings that had never fully burned: letters of apology never written, promises twisted into chains, songs of praise forced from tired mouths, the bones of questions punished before they could become wisdom.

“How?” she asked.

Hecate touched a torch to the earth. A dark line circled the stones. “First, we stop feeding it.”

Sitri moved to the fire’s far side. “Then we name what may never again be offered here.”

Silence. Then the old woman: “No more fear disguised as loyalty.”

The young man: “No more silence disguised as peace.”

Another: “No more flattery disguised as love.”

Another: “No more one person owning the flame.”

With each vow the fire shrank, spitting sparks to stay alive, sending smoke into their faces, carrying the old voice — you are destroying everything, you are ungrateful, you will come crawling back.

The child pressed close to the Seeker’s side. She wanted to cover the child’s ears. Sitri shook her head. “Let the voice reveal itself. Hidden poison is stronger than poison named.”

So they listened, until the voice grew small and repetitive, almost pitiful — no new words, only old hooks that no longer worked.

Eagle Man Guide lifted a bowl of water from the roots of the tree, dark and bright at once, as though it held the night sky. He did not pour it out. He handed it to the people.

The bowl passed from hand to hand around the clearing. Some whispered into it. Some wept into it. Some only breathed over it, with the exhaustion of those who had been brave longer than anyone knew.

When it returned to the Seeker, it was heavy.

She looked to Eagle Man Guide. He did not take it from her.

“Not alone,” he said.

She carried the bowl to the fire’s edge. The people came with her — Hecate on one side, Sitri on the other, Eagle Man Guide behind them all, wings open like a sheltering storm.

Many hands tilted the bowl.

The water fell. The fire screamed. Steam burst upward, thick and bitter, and the clearing vanished into green-blue vapor. The Seeker coughed, nearly stumbled — hands held her. Not one hand. Many.

When the steam cleared, the fire was gone.

Darkness rushed in. For a moment no one moved; the absence of flame felt enormous. The stones lay blackened. The air smelled of ash and rain. Through the woven branches, stars appeared one by one.

“I can hear the crickets,” the child whispered.

Then the Seeker heard them too. Crickets. Wind. A night bird calling from the high branches. Someone crying softly. Someone breathing. The world had not ended. Without the poisoned fire, other forms of life could be heard again.

Sitri knelt and pressed her palm to the cold ash. “This ground must rest. No new fire will be built on poisoned ash.”

Fear flickered through the people again, though less than before.

“Then where?” asked the young man.

The child lifted the bundle of small sticks and walked to a patch of bare earth beyond the old ring of stones. “Here.”

No one laughed. No one said the sticks were too small.

The people went into the forest and returned with fallen branches, dry moss, curls of birch bark, cedar, pinecones split open by weather — each offering inspected not for size, but for cleanliness.

The old woman brought a twig from the threshold of her house, where she had once stood afraid to open the door.

The young man brought a branch from the road where he had turned away from his friend.

A mother brought kindling from the cradle her children had outgrown.

Hecate brought a coal from her torch, but she did not set it down. She waited.

Sitri drew a new circle in the earth, smaller than the old one, and opened it in four places. “For entering. For leaving. For returning. For repair.”

The Seeker smiled through her tears.

The people laid the clean wood at the center — a humble pile, almost fragile beneath the vast night.

Hecate gave the coal to the child.

“Me?”

“You found what others overlooked.”

The child set the coal beneath the bark. The people leaned close, not too close, and waited.

A thread of smoke rose, pale and clean. A small flame appeared.

It was nothing like the old fire. It did not roar or command the clearing, did not turn faces strange colors or throw shadows twice their size. It simply burned.

Gold. Quiet. Warm.

The Seeker held out her hands. Real heat touched her palms. Gentle heat. Tears slipped down her face before she knew she was crying.

Eagle Man Guide stood beside her. “Remember this. A sacred fire is not proven by its size. It is proven by what becomes possible around it.”

Around the small flame, people began to sit. Not everyone came close — some remained at the clearing’s edge, and that too was allowed. Some had been burned too badly to trust warmth so soon. Some needed to watch from a distance. Some would leave and return another night.

No one was dragged nearer. No one was shamed for caution. No one was asked to call the new fire safe before their body believed it.

The Seeker sat beside the child. Sitri sat across from them. Hecate planted her staff in the earth. Eagle Man Guide folded his wings and lowered himself onto a stone.

For a long while, no one spoke.

Then the old woman turned to the young man. “I am sorry.”

He nodded, but did not absolve her quickly. “I hear you.”

It was enough for the first night.

The small fire burned steadily. Beyond the clearing, the old ash cooled in the dark — no longer fed, no longer worshiped, no longer mistaken for the only light there was.

The Seeker understood, at last, that healing was not a return to what had been. What had been was where the poison entered. Healing was a new covenant — with warmth, with truth, with one another.

Darkness, she thought, was not always the enemy. Sometimes it was the holy pause between the fire that harmed and the fire still waiting to be born.

A Plague of Narcissism

We are living through a plague of narcissism. I call it a plague because abusive and manipulative behavior has seeped into our politics, workplaces, media, faith communities, families and friendships. Too often, we are told, “That’s just human nature.”

It is not. It is narcissistic behavior.

Do any of these feel familiar?

Decreased morale.
Stifled creativity.
Emotional exhaustion.
Competition that undermines unity.
Fear of speaking honestly.
Loyalty demanded over truth.

These are common effects of abusive and destructive leadership. I think the United States is being led by a person who shows many signs of narcissistic leadership. I do not need to diagnose the president to describe the pattern. I can look at observable behavior, public consequences and the civic harm that follows.

I may have an opinion about the president’s mental health. So what. The more important question is not what is wrong with him. The more important question is what is happening to us. And what I see is manipulation in abundance.

Exactly how does narcissism show up in leaders? I found an article by Sterlin L. Mosley, PhD, from 2025 about the many forms of narcissistic leadership. The full list is worth reading, but three forms feel especially relevant to our political moment.

The three most obvious are grandiose narcissism, communal narcissism and malignant narcissism.

Grandiose narcissism in leadership is self-congratulatory, attention-seeking and dismissive of dissenting voices. The leader needs constant praise. Every success belongs to them. Every failure belongs to someone else. Loyalty matters more than competence, and disagreement is treated as betrayal.
Communal narcissistic leaders frame themselves as moral exemplars. They need public recognition for their good deeds and often use the language of service, patriotism, faith or sacrifice to elevate themselves. Their message is not simply, “This cause matters.” Their message is, “I alone embody this cause.”
Malignant narcissism combines narcissistic, antisocial and sadistic traits. Leaders with this pattern are vindictive, controlling and abusive. They do not merely want admiration. They want domination. They punish enemies, humiliate critics and appear to take pleasure in making others afraid.

Whether the president is or is not a narcissist remains for a qualified professional to diagnose, if he ever seeks that kind of evaluation. What is not in doubt is the impact narcissistic leadership has on the rest of us.

We need to learn how to navigate it, mitigate its impact and eventually heal. Here is an excerpt of a “how to” guide that is much easier to recite than to practice in a moment of tension.

Expect manipulation. Avoid being swayed by emotional attacks by staying grounded.
Recognize the need for control. Prepare for situations where narcissistic leaders dominate conversations, decision-making or public attention.
Assess your own reactions. Acknowledge your emotions so you can respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively.
Know your limits. Decide in advance what behaviors you will not tolerate and what you will do when those boundaries are crossed.
Communicate in “I” statements to express impact on yourself.
Be consistent in upholding boundaries.
Set time limits. Take breaks to recover.
Prepare solutions ahead of time.
Frame feedback as a sandwich: positive, critical, then positive again.
Collaborate with others. Deepen bonds of connection.
Practice self-care through support groups, stress-relief activities and professional help as needed.
Stay aligned with your values and integrity.

There are many other aspects to consider, of course. But these suggestions point us toward something important. The answer is not simply to oppose the narcissist. The answer is to stop organizing our lives around the narcissist’s need for attention.

That is much harder than it sounds.

Narcissistic leadership pulls us into reaction. It trains us to watch the spectacle, track the insult, answer the outrage and defend against the next attack. It keeps us emotionally activated and exhausted. Over time, we may begin to mirror the very behavior we say we oppose. We become sharper, crueler, more suspicious and less able to trust one another.

That is part of the harm.

We can see it in our exhaustion. We can hear it in the way people talk over one another. We can feel it in the pressure to choose loyalty over truth, performance over repair and dominance over dignity.

So how do we, as a society, heal and repair from the impact of narcissistic leadership? Healing begins when we refuse to let outrage set the rhythm of our days. It begins when we protect dissent, tell the truth without cruelty, set boundaries without apology and rebuild circles of trust strong enough to withstand manipulation.

The work ahead is political, relational and civic. It requires more than winning an argument or an election. It requires rebuilding the habits that narcissistic leadership corrodes: accountability, shared responsibility, honest disagreement, mutual restraint and care for the common good.

A narcissistic culture teaches us to compete for worth. A democratic culture teaches us to share responsibility. If we want to heal, we must stop feeding the performance of power and begin practicing the habits of mutual care, accountability and courage.

That is how we recover ourselves.

That is how we become a people again.
