Life has a funny habit of putting us in waiting rooms.

• Waiting for the phone to ring.

• Waiting for test results.

• Waiting for the promotion.

• Waiting for your first customer.

• Waiting for your house to sell.

• Waiting for the manuscript to be approved.

• Waiting for the right person.

• Waiting for healing.

• Waiting for the next chapter.

Nobody enjoys waiting.

Our culture celebrates arrival. We applaud the finish line, the ribbon cutting, the bestseller list, the championship trophy, the retirement party. Rarely do we celebrate the months, or years, spent standing in the hallway before any of those doors opened.

Yet that’s where most of life actually happens.

It’s tempting to believe that once the waiting is over, life can finally begin. “I’ll start living when...” “I’ll be happy after...” “I’ll work harder once...” But waiting doesn’t pause life. It is life. The question isn’t whether you’ll spend time waiting. The question is what you’ll become while you wait.

I’ve noticed something about people who eventually reach meaningful goals. They rarely spend their waiting season staring at the clock.

• They read.

• They practice.

• They build.

• They learn new skills.

• They improve their health.

• They strengthen relationships.

• They prepare for opportunities that haven’t arrived yet.

From the outside, it may look like nothing is happening. From the inside, foundations are quietly being poured. By the time the opportunity appears, they’re ready because they’ve already been becoming the person who could handle it.

Right now, I’m waiting.

• Waiting for approvals.

• Waiting for books to go live.

• Waiting for websites to launch.

• Waiting for marketing campaigns to begin.

There are moments when I wish someone would simply push the giant green “Go” button. But that button isn’t mine to push. So instead, I ask myself a different question:

“What can I build today that Future Me will be grateful for?”

Sometimes it’s creating a new product. Sometimes it’s writing an article like this. Sometimes it’s organizing files that no one else will ever see. Sometimes it’s taking a walk because a tired mind doesn’t create great ideas. None of it feels dramatic. Yet all of it moves the story forward.

Waiting Isn’t Wasted. A seed spends a long time underground before anyone sees a sprout. An author writes hundreds of pages before a reader turns page one. An athlete practices thousands of hours before stepping onto a podium.

Growth often happens where no one is watching. Maybe that’s why waiting feels so uncomfortable. It demands faith that invisible work still matters.

If you’re in a season of waiting, maybe don’t ask: “When will this finally happen?” Instead, ask: “Who am I becoming while I wait?” Because someday the waiting will end. The opportunity will arrive. The phone will ring. The door will open. When it does, you’ll discover that the greatest gift wasn’t simply reaching the destination. It was becoming the kind of person who was ready when it finally arrived.

Elk. Moose. Foxes. Maybe a curious squirrel or two.

What we didn’t realize was that one very determined cinnamon-colored black bear had apparently added our address to his daily calendar.

Not once. Not twice.

Every. Single. Day.

At first, he wandered through the yard like he owned the place. Then he discovered our hummingbird feeders. Let’s just say...they didn’t survive. The water dishes we’d left out for the smaller wildlife?

Destroyed. Random items on the deck? Chewed. Flower pots?

Investigated with great enthusiasm. Our peaceful mountain deck had become his personal buffet and playground.

One day, he parked himself so close to the house that we simply stayed inside.

All.

Day.

He paced. He sniffed. He lounged.

He wandered around the porch as if he were waiting for us to bring him snacks.

Spoiler alert: We did not. Instead, we spent the day peeking through windows like characters in our own wildlife documentary.

Eventually we removed everything that could possibly interest a bear.

The hummingbird feeders came down. The trash went into the garage. Every scented item disappeared. The deck became... well... rather boring.

Except apparently not boring enough. Because he kept coming back anyway.

Then came the day we truly earned our Colorado resident badges. My husband and I stepped onto the deck, completely unaware that our furry visitor had beaten us there. There he was. Much closer than either of us preferred. Fortunately, we’d listened to every bit of mountain advice we’d ever received.

We had bear spray.

Unfortunately... Nobody had explained that bear spray occasionally has opinions about wind direction. The bear received a little.

We received... rather a lot.

Imagine voluntarily seasoning your own face with the world’s angriest jalapeño.

Our eyes burned. We coughed. We gagged.

For a few memorable moments, neither of us could see particularly well.

Meanwhile, I suspect the bear looked at us as if to say,

“Well...that escalated quickly.”

Thankfully, everyone walked away safely. The bear retreated.

Eventually, so did our eyesight. The experience reminded me of something I’ve learned over the years.

Life has an incredible sense of humor.

You can spend weeks worrying about book launches, website deadlines, newsletters, and marketing plans... and then a bear shows up and completely rearranges your priorities.

Suddenly, you’re less concerned about email open rates and much more interested in whether your hummingbird feeder still exists.

Living near Rocky Mountain National Park is an extraordinary privilege. The wildlife is part of that privilege. These animals belong here.

We’re simply learning, one adventure at a time, how to be good neighbors while respecting the fact that this was their home long before it became ours.

I still hope our daily visitor eventually decides another yard is more interesting than ours.

But if he doesn’t...

At least I’ll have another story to tell.

There comes a point during every book launch when all the beautiful spreadsheets, carefully crafted timelines, and color-coded project plans quietly gather together... and burst into flames.

Months ago, everything looked so simple.

Finish the manuscript.
Approve the illustrations.
Build the website.
Create the newsletters.
Order author copies.
Schedule social media.
Launch the book.

Easy, right?

Then reality clocks in for work.

My illustrator, who lives on the beautiful island of Lombok, Indonesia, came down with typhus.

Typhus.

That wasn’t on my project plan.

My website designer is incredibly talented... and incredibly busy because everyone else apparently decided this was the perfect time to redesign their websites.

Meanwhile, I’m over here refreshing my inbox every 17 minutes, wondering if today is “Website Day.”

The book itself is almost ready.

Almost.

Which, in publishing, can feel like standing at the airport while your suitcase is somewhere over the Pacific Ocean.

Then comes the website.

I’ve decided to move everything from my existing author website to an entirely new home dedicated exclusively to Salz & Peppa.

Great long-term decision.

Questionable timing.

Naturally, I chose to learn Squarespace while simultaneously preparing for a book launch.

Because apparently I enjoy adding bonus levels to already difficult games.

Then there are newsletters. Not one newsletter. An entire welcome series.

• Character spotlights.

• Behind-the-scenes emails.

• Printable activity announcements.

• Early reader updates.

Every time I finish one, another idea taps me on the shoulder.

“Wouldn’t parents love...”

Yes.

They probably would. Please take a number.

Meanwhile, the Denver Children’s Museum advertising campaign is patiently waiting on the calendar. It launches September 1st.

That date isn’t moving. So everything else has to.

Some days I feel like I’m conducting an orchestra where the violins are late, the trumpet player has the flu, someone misplaced the sheet music, and one squirrel keeps trying to steal the pizza.

Actually... That last one is part of the story. The funny thing is this isn’t failure. It’s publishing. Every author I’ve talked to has their own version of launch panic. Printers run late. Illustrators get sick. Websites refuse to cooperate. Advertising schedules change. Books arrive with mysterious delays that nobody can quite explain.

The launch plan doesn’t fail. It evolves.

I’ve spent decades leading technology projects, and one lesson has followed me from conference rooms to children’s books:

The plan is important. The ability to adapt is even more important.

So this week you’ll find me building web pages, reviewing artwork, checking emails, creating newsletters, and reminding myself that every finished children’s book once lived through a little chaos before it reached a child’s hands.

One day, a preschooler will curl up with Salz & Peppa: The Missing Pizza, giggle at Vinny’s oversized dreams, cheer for Salz and Peppa, and never know that somewhere along the way there was an illustrator recovering from typhus, a website still under construction, and an author wondering if everything would come together in time.

And honestly...

That’s probably how it should be.

The children get the magic.

The grown-ups earn it.

At exactly 11:43 PM, London lost its echo.

Not metaphorically.

Literally.

For eleven terrifying minutes:

• Footsteps made no sound

• Buses rolled silently through the streets

• Dogs barked without noise

• Even Big Ben stopped echoing across the city

Panic spread instantly. People flooded the streets staring upward at the silent clock tower.

Inside B.R.A.I.N. headquarters, Rex Reconn nearly fell out of his chair.

“That’s impossible,” he shouted. Stache sprinted across the room, carrying a stolen sausage roll and a map of abandoned Underground tunnels.

“Right. Priorities later,” Rex muttered.

The signal was coming from beneath Westminster. Deep underground. Near a forgotten station sealed off decades earlier. Within minutes, Rex and Stache descended into the old tunnels armed with flashlights, emergency biscuits, one grappling hook, and what Rex described as “moderate confidence.” The tunnels trembled violently. Silver wires lined the walls like glowing spiderwebs.

At the center of the underground chamber stood the largest Q.U.I.E.T. machine Rex had ever seen. A towering silver structure pulsed with stolen echoes from across London. And beside it stood Sister BQ.

Calm as ever. Her silver-threaded habit barely moved despite the violent energy shaking the chamber.

“You cannot silence an entire city!” Rex shouted.

Sister BQ tilted her head slightly.

“Why not? Noise creates panic. Arguments. Fear. Silence creates peace.”

“Silence also creates loneliness,” Rex replied quietly.

For the first time, Sister BQ hesitated. Far above them, faint vibrations shook the tunnels. London was trying to reclaim its sound. Stache suddenly launched himself directly onto the machine’s control panel. Buttons exploded with sparks. Warning sirens blared. The chamber filled instantly with every trapped sound: church bells, laughter, train brakes, street musicians, pigeons, children shouting, rain, traffic, dogs barking, and people singing.

London roared back to life. The Q.U.I.E.T. machine overloaded violently. Silver lights shattered across the chamber ceiling. Sister BQ stared upward as echoes flooded the tunnels once more. For the briefest moment, she almost looked heartbroken.

Then the emergency lights failed. Darkness swallowed the chamber. When Rex finally reached the control platform again...Sister BQ was gone. Only one object remained behind.

A silver rosary wrapped around a strange black key engraved with a single symbol: A black circle crossed by a white thread. Stache stared at it. Rex swallowed hard.

“Please tell me that doesn’t mean there’s a bigger organization.” Stache slowly placed one paw on the key.

Somewhere far beneath London, another machine quietly turned on.

More certain. More organized. More emotionally resolved.

I thought adults eventually reached a stage where they quietly understood everything. Instead, midlife arrived looking like: health scans, yard work, creative reinvention, frozen casseroles, late-night anxiety, business plans, fatigue, unexpected ambition, and wondering why my knees suddenly negotiate every staircase like union representatives.

Nobody really explains this phase honestly.

You spend your younger years imagining midlife as a slow fading. But that has not been my experience at all. If anything, midlife feels louder internally.

You become intensely aware of time.
Energy.
Health.
Purpose.
Relationships.
Meaning.

The questions become sharper.

What actually matters now?
What deserves my remaining energy?
What kind of life am I building from here?
Who do I still want to become?

And strangely enough, creativity often returns right in the middle of all this.

That part surprised me. I expected aging to feel like narrowing.

Instead, parts of me feel wider now than they did twenty years ago.

More curious.
More honest.
Less interested in performance.
Less willing to waste time pretending.

There is also something uniquely exhausting about this stage of life that people rarely discuss openly.

You may still be helping older parents.
Still supporting adult children.
Still managing finances.
Still building careers.
Still trying to improve your health.
Still figuring yourself out emotionally.

All while carrying a body that no longer recovers from nonsense quite as enthusiastically as it once did.

It is a strange intersection:
wisdom meeting wear-and-tear.

And yet…

I do not think midlife is merely a decline. I think it is a confrontation. Confrontation with mortality. With identity. With the gap between the life you imagined and the life you actually built. But it is also a confrontation with possibility. By this age, many people have finally stopped waiting for permission.

They start the business.
Write the book.
Take the trip.
Plant the garden.
Change the career.
Protect their peace.
Tell the truth.

Not because they suddenly became fearless. But because time finally feels visible. And visible time changes people. Perhaps that is why I love the phrase Weathered & Wild so much.

Weathered acknowledges the storms.

Wild acknowledges the part of us that still refuses to stop living fully anyway.

And honestly?

I think both can exist together beautifully.

Salz would be elegant, dramatic, and slightly bossy.

Peppa would be mischievous.

Simple enough. Or so I believed.

Then Peppa immediately began ignoring all forms of creative supervision.

I think every writer eventually discovers there are two kinds of fictional characters. The obedient ones. And the ones who sprint directly into the scene, holding a stolen pizza crust while setting metaphorical fires.

Peppa belongs firmly in the second category.

The problem with chaotic characters is that they often become the funniest and most lovable people in the story. Which is deeply inconvenient when you are trying to maintain order. At some point, I realized Peppa was never supposed to behave properly because his entire purpose inside the story world is disruption.

He asks questions.
Touches things.
Accuses pigeons without evidence.
Creates problems.
Escalates situations.
Gets distracted by snacks during investigations.

In other words, Peppa behaves exactly like many real people I know. And honestly, I think flawed characters become beloved because they feel emotionally recognizable.

Perfect characters are often exhausting. But slightly chaotic characters? Those feel human.

Especially when the chaos comes from curiosity rather than cruelty.

That distinction matters. Peppa is not malicious.

He is simply powered almost entirely by enthusiasm, appetite, and questionable decision-making. Which, to be fair, describes a surprising percentage of humanity.

I also think stories need characters who break emotional tension.

Characters who knock over the carefully arranged emotional flowerpot at exactly the right moment. Without them, stories can become too polished. Too controlled. Too emotionally predictable. Chaos creates movement. And perhaps that is true outside fiction, too.

Some of the most meaningful moments in life arrive through interruptions:
unexpected friendships,
wrong turns,
accidental opportunities,
surprising conversations,
unplanned reinventions.

Very little about meaningful lives is perfectly organized.

Which may explain why readers tend to connect so strongly with imperfect characters.

We recognize ourselves inside them.

The impulsiveness.
The awkwardness.
The overreactions.
The good intentions are colliding with bad judgment.

Peppa may never become sophisticated.

He may never stop chasing pigeons with the confidence of a detective who has absolutely no evidence whatsoever.

But perhaps that is exactly why he belongs in this world.

Every carefully built universe needs at least one character willing to leave muddy paw prints across the floor.

Otherwise, the place stops feeling alive.

One minute, you are watching a video about miniature goats wearing sweaters. The next minute, you are reading a comment from a complete stranger that somehow reaches directly into your chest. For all its noise, chaos, arguments, advertisements, outrage, and endless scrolling, the internet still contains something deeply human hidden beneath the machinery. People are quietly trying to hold each other together.

I see it all the time now.

A thoughtful comment beneath an essay.
A stranger encouraging another stranger.
Someone admitting they feel lost.
Someone else answered, “Me too.”
Readers comforting people they have never met.
Tiny moments of sincerity floating through the digital static like lanterns.

And honestly, I think many of us underestimate how emotionally significant these moments can become. Because adulthood is isolating in ways nobody fully explains when we are younger.

People move.
Families fracture.
Friends become busy.
Lives diverge.
Grief arrives.
Careers consume us.
Some people feel invisible for years without ever saying it out loud.

Then one evening, perhaps at exactly the right moment, someone somewhere in the world writes: “I understand.” And suddenly another human being feels a little less alone. That matters. I know the internet is often criticized for creating shallow connections. Sometimes fairly.

Algorithms reward performance.
Attention spans shrink.
Everything competes for reaction.

But beneath all of that, real humanity still leaks through constantly. Especially in spaces where people are allowed to speak honestly. That is one reason I have grown unexpectedly fond of places like Substack. Not because it is perfect. But because it reminds me that many people are starving for depth.

Not polished branding.
Not influencer theater.
Not manufactured perfection.

Just honesty.

Thoughtfulness.
Stories.
Humor.
Shared humanity.
The comfort of realizing someone else has also stood in the same emotional weather.

I think we are all carrying invisible things now.

Quiet fears.
Exhaustion.
Hope.
Loneliness.
Dreams we have not yet fully given up on.

And maybe that is why even small kindnesses online feel so powerful.

A thoughtful comment.
A shared memory.
A stranger saying:
“This helped me.”
“I needed this today.”
“You made me feel understood.”

Tiny sentences. Yet sometimes they arrive exactly when another person needed them most. The internet may never become peaceful. But hidden inside all the noise are millions of people quietly passing emotional blankets back and forth in the dark.

And I think that is worth remembering.

Not over the course of a month. Over the course of an afternoon. At one point, the sun was shining while tiny ice pellets attacked my windshield like an emotionally confused snow globe.

Living in Colorado means learning very quickly that conditions can change without warning. You leave the house wearing sunglasses and return home questioning your relationship with nature. But oddly enough, I think there is something deeply useful about living in a place like this.

Colorado weather does not allow you to become emotionally overconfident. You learn to prepare for multiple realities at once. Carry the jacket. Keep the umbrella nearby. Respect the sunshine, but do not entirely trust it.

And honestly?

Life works a lot like that, too.

I think many of us were quietly raised to expect stability as the default setting of adulthood. That if we worked hard enough, planned carefully enough, and behaved responsibly enough, life would eventually become predictable. Then adulthood arrived like a rogue mountain storm.

Health scares.
Layoffs.
Divorce.
Grief.
Reinvention.
Unexpected opportunities.
New friendships.
Financial setbacks.
Beautiful surprises.
Heartbreak.
Healing.

Sometimes all in the same season. Possibly all in the same week. The older I get, the more I realize resilience is not about controlling conditions. It is about learning how to move through changing conditions without losing yourself entirely.

Trees in Colorado know this.

They bend constantly.
Snow one day.
Sun the next.
Wind after that.

Yet somehow spring still arrives. I think people are like that, too.

Some seasons harden us. Some soften us. Some strip everything bare until we wonder if growth will ever return. And then one morning, almost without warning, something blooms again.

A new idea. A new friendship. A new chapter. A little bit of hope is returning quietly to the landscape.

Perhaps wisdom is not becoming fearless in the storm. Perhaps wisdom is simply learning not to panic every time the weather changes.

Because it will change. It always does.

The hail passes.
The snow melts.
The thunder moves east.
And eventually, the sunlight returns to the mountains as if none of it had happened at all.

Colorado taught me that.

Life keeps confirming it.

London was getting quieter.

Not a normal quiet.

Wrong quiet.

By Thursday morning, people across the city began reporting strange experiences.

Footsteps with no echo. Church bells sounding dull. Entire Tube platforms unnaturally muted. One man claimed he sneezed inside a bakery and “the sneeze vanished halfway through.” Nobody understood what that meant. But honestly? Nobody liked it.

Meanwhile, beneath the streets of Mayfair, Rex Reconn and Stache squeezed through a narrow maintenance tunnel carrying flashlights and three emergency crumpets.

“You packed snacks for a possible underground disaster?” Rex asked. Stache blinked slowly.

“Fair point.”

The tunnel walls vibrated faintly with mechanical humming. Every few feet, Rex discovered tiny silver devices bolted into the bricks. Small glowing symbols flashed across their surfaces:

Then she appeared. Sister BQ stepped gracefully from the shadows, wearing a charcoal-gray habit trimmed with silver thread. A strange rosary of metallic discs hung at her side, each one etched with tiny soundwave symbols. Her posture was impossibly still. Calm in the unnerving way thunderstorms sometimes are just before lightning arrives.

“You noticed the silence earlier than expected,” she said softly.

Rex straightened immediately.

“I’m with B.R.A.I.N.!”

“I know,” Sister BQ replied.

Strangely, she did not sound angry. She sounded disappointed. Behind her, enormous silver pipes disappeared deeper beneath the city. The humming grew louder.

“You do not understand what noise has done to this world,” she said quietly. “Arguments. Panic. Cruelty. Chaos. London does not need more voices.”

“It’s a city,” Rex argued. “Cities ARE voices.”

For the briefest moment, Sister BQ’s expression shifted. Almost sadness. Then every tunnel light suddenly switched off. Darkness swallowed the station. Stache hissed violently. Metal doors slammed somewhere far below.

And deep beneath London, something massive awakened.

Most healing arrives quietly.

One ordinary moment at a time.

For me, it happened during our evening walks.

Not long ago, there were stretches where I honestly wondered what was happening to me physically. My heart would pound. I could not catch my breath properly. Certain hills felt far steeper than they used to. Even basic exertion sometimes felt heavier than it should.

And then slowly, almost invisibly, something began changing.

Not all at once.

Just little things.

I could walk farther before needing to pause. I recovered faster. The tightness eased. The panic faded.

Then one evening, it hit me: I had just completed the entire walk without stopping. That moment probably would not look impressive to anyone else. But I think many adults understand this kind of victory intimately. Because midlife progress is often deeply unglamorous.

It is not usually about becoming younger. It is about becoming stronger than you were last month. Calmer than you were last year. More capable than you were during the difficult season that nearly convinced you things would never improve.

I think modern culture has trained us to celebrate dramatic transformation while overlooking quieter forms of resilience.

But honestly? Quiet resilience may be the more important skill.

Continuing anyway.
Adjusting anyway.

Trying again anyway.

Especially after fear enters the picture.

Health scares change something psychologically. They make you aware of your body in a way that is hard to ignore afterwards. Every improvement suddenly feels meaningful. Every healthy choice feels connected to a future version of yourself you are trying to protect. And perhaps that is why these evening walks now feel strangely emotional to me. Not because they are extraordinary.

But because they are ordinary things, I briefly feared becoming harder. The older I get, the more I appreciate ordinary abilities: walking comfortably, breathing deeply, sleeping peacefully, moving without pain, and having enough energy to enjoy life.

These are not small things. They are the infrastructure of joy.

I still have work to do.

We both do.

But there is something deeply encouraging about realizing healing does not always require perfection. Sometimes healing simply means: you are no longer where you were.

And honestly? That is enough to keep moving forward.

Buttons.
Layouts.
Fonts.
Navigation menus.
Maybe a few photos and a newsletter signup box.

Simple enough. Then I tried building an actual creative brand online and discovered something important: A website is not merely a website. It is an atmosphere. And atmosphere is deeply personal. Especially when you are creating fictional worlds, emotional storytelling, books, characters, and communities.

At some point during this journey, I realized I had officially reached the limits of my “I can probably figure this out myself” era. Which is both humbling and mildly offensive when you have spent years teaching yourself everything through stubbornness and caffeine. But eventually, there comes a moment when DIY quietly starts to cost more than professional help. Not because your work is terrible. But because your vision has outgrown your current tools.

That realization is surprisingly emotional. Because hiring a web designer does not feel like hiring someone to arrange rectangles on a screen. It feels like handing someone the blueprints to your imagination and saying:

“Please help me build this place correctly.” And then comes the truly difficult part: Trying to explain vibe. Not functionality. Not technology.

Vibe.

You are attempting to communicate things like:
“It should feel cozy but magical.”
“I want wonder, not chaos.”
“I want warmth without looking childish.”
“I want people to emotionally enter the world.”

At some point, you realize you sound less like a business owner and more like a woman trying to describe a dream she had near a candle shop.

But honestly? I think good designers understand this better than we realize. Because the best creative professionals are not simply assembling visuals. They are translating emotional experiences into environments. That matters tremendously for storytelling brands.

Especially now, when people are exhausted by generic online spaces. The internet is full of websites that function perfectly yet feel absolutely nothing.

No personality.
No emotional texture.
No invitation to linger.

But the websites people remember?
The brands people emotionally attach to?

Those spaces usually feel inhabited somehow.

Intentional.
Specific.
Alive.

And I think that is ultimately what I am searching for now as I build Salz & Peppa. Not merely a prettier website. A world people can step inside and immediately understand emotionally. A place where the crumbs, the colors, the humor, the mystery, the warmth, and the characters all feel like they belong to the same universe.

Because once you start building fictional worlds, you realize something very quickly:

Everything becomes storytelling eventually.

Even the website.

• Some people build them with books.

• Some with recipes.

• Some with gardens.

• Some with cafés.

• Some with music.

• Some with paintings.

• Some with businesses.

• Some with stories about pizza-detective cats living in Brooklyn.

But underneath it all, I think many creative people are quietly constructing emotional universes. Places that feel a certain way. And perhaps that is why audiences connect so deeply with certain creators. Not because the creator is perfect. But because their world feels inhabitable.

You can feel this immediately when entering certain spaces.

• A cozy bookstore.

• A beautifully written newsletter.

• A grandmother’s kitchen.

• A favorite coffee shop.

• A YouTube channel filled with warmth instead of noise.

Some places make us exhale psychologically. They create an emotional atmosphere. And atmosphere is one of the most underrated forms of creativity. I think this is why I no longer believe creators are “just making content.” That phrase feels far too small.

• Writers are building rooms that people emotionally visit.

• Artists are creating visual climates.

• Chefs are designing edible memories.

• Storytellers are constructing entire emotional ecosystems out of language and feeling.

Even online. Especially online. Because, despite the chaos of the internet, human beings are still searching for places that feel real.

They are searching for places that exude warmth, honesty, wonder, humor, and a sense of belonging.

Tiny universes where they recognize themselves.

I think about this often now as I build my own strange little corners of the world.

• Substack articles.

• Children’s books.

• Characters.

• Fairy houses.

• Pinterest boards.

• Creative projects scattered across the internet like lanterns.

Individually, they may seem unrelated. But emotionally, they belong to the same universe. A place built around wonder, reinvention, creativity, kindness, and curiosity. And perhaps this is the secret many creators eventually discover:

People rarely return because of algorithms alone.

They return because something about your world makes them feel less alone inside their own.

That feeling matters. Especially now. Maybe more than ever.

A single place with familiar roads, familiar people, familiar grocery stores, and childhood memories rooted neatly into the landscape like old trees. Some people have that. I think it must feel extraordinary.

To know the same neighbors for decades.
To run into childhood classmates at the grocery store.
To return to streets layered with memory.

There is something deeply beautiful about rooted lives. But not all of us were built that way.

Some of us became travelers. Rebuilders. Adapters. People who learned how to unpack their identities over and over again in unfamiliar places. And after enough reinventions, something strange begins to happen.

Home stops behaving like geography. It starts behaving like recognition.

A familiar laugh.
A favorite recipe.
A cat waiting in the window.
A conversation where you do not have to translate yourself. The sound of someone saying your name with warmth.

I think many people spend years feeling secretly defective because they never found a single permanent place that felt entirely like home. Especially those of us who have moved often, changed careers, rebuilt relationships, started over, or lived internationally. But maybe home was never supposed to fit inside an address.

Maybe home is the collection of people, rituals, stories, smells, songs, books, and memories that allow our nervous system to finally unclench. Maybe home is where we feel safe enough to become ourselves fully.

I think about this often now as I grow older.

The older I get, the less interested I become in appearances of belonging and the more interested I become in emotional honesty.

Who lets you exhale?
Who lets you arrive exactly as you are?
Who makes the world feel softer instead of sharper?

Those places matter. Those people matter. And sometimes we discover home in the most unexpected ways.

Inside online communities.
Inside creative circles.
Inside tiny routines.
Inside friendships formed later in life.
Inside stories.
Inside kitchens.
Inside conversations with people who simply understand us.

Perhaps this is why so many adults feel lonely now.

We were taught to search for home externally while quietly starving for it internally.

But every once in a while, we encounter a person, a place, or a moment that makes something inside us whisper: “There you are.”

Not: “You finally arrived somewhere impressive.”

Just: “There you are.”

And maybe that feeling has been home all along.

The first person to notice the silence was not a scientist.

It was Mrs Wilbury from Flat 3B.

“This city sounds wrong,” she announced while aggressively feeding breadcrumbs to a group of unusually quiet pigeons near Green Park Station.

Normally, the pigeons of London behaved like feathered hooligans with absolutely no respect for personal space. But this morning? Not a single coo. Not one flap-induced panic attack.

Nothing.

By noon, reports spread quickly across Mayfair. The fountain near Berkeley Square sounded strangely muted. The Underground announcements seemed softer. Even the traffic somehow felt muffled.

“Odd,” muttered Rex Reconn as he adjusted the oversized detective goggles hanging around his neck. Beside him, Stache the cat froze dramatically atop a newspaper stand. His tail puffed. Which was never a promising sign.

“Don’t start doing that,” Rex whispered nervously. “Last time your tail puffed up, we found a llama inside Parliament.” Stache narrowed his eyes toward the entrance of Green Park Underground Station. A low humming sound drifted upward from beneath the city. Barely audible. Almost mechanical. Rex pulled out his official B.R.A.I.N. notebook.

Motto: “If it looks ridiculous, investigate immediately.”

“Something’s wrong,” Rex said quietly. At that exact moment, every pigeon in the square turned in the same direction simultaneously. Then all of them flew away at once.

Not chaotically. Deliberately.

As if fleeing something underground. Stache leapt onto Rex’s shoulder. The cat’s tiny detective bowtie trembled.

“That’s not ominous at all,” Rex sighed. Then the lights near the station entrance flickered. A woman stepped quietly from the shadows below the station stairs. She wore a charcoal-grey habit trimmed with silver thread. Her posture was impossibly still. Calm in the unnerving way thunderstorms sometimes are just before lightning arrives. Sharp posture. Expression unreadable. She looked upward for exactly one second. Then disappeared into the shadows beneath London.

Rex stared after her. “Who was that?” No answer came. Only silence.

Deep beneath the city, hidden somewhere under miles of tunnels and forgotten stations, a machine quietly began to hum louder. And for the first time in over one hundred years...

Not cinematic.

Just quietly real.

You sit in a doctor’s office discussing scan results, and suddenly the future you have casually assumed will exist forever begins feeling softer around the edges.

Not gone.

Just… more fragile than you realized.

I think many couples eventually experience this moment.

One person receives a test result.
A warning.
A number slightly outside the range everyone hoped to see.

And even when the situation is manageable, something emotional still shifts.

You begin mentally recalculating the future without even meaning to.

The trips you want to take.
The hikes.
The years ahead.
The ordinary evenings.
The retirement dreams.
The bucket lists quietly wait in the background.

Suddenly, all of it feels less abstract. More precious. That was the strange thing about these recent heart scans. The results were not catastrophic.

In many ways, they were exactly what we needed: information, awareness, a baseline, and a chance to make changes now instead of later. And yet I still walked away feeling emotionally altered. Because there is something deeply sobering about realizing the people we love are not indestructible. Neither are we.

I think when we are younger, we unconsciously imagine health as the default setting of life.

We assume our bodies will continue cooperating indefinitely while we postpone things:
the trip,
the adventure,
the healthier habits,
the rest,
the joy,
the slowing down,
the “someday.”

Then midlife arrives, carrying paperwork and scan results, and suddenly “someday” starts sounding less responsible. Not because life is ending. But because life becomes visible in a different way. Sharper somehow. More finite. More valuable.

Oddly enough, I do not think this realization has made me feel hopeless.

Quite the opposite.

It has made me pay attention.

To the walks.
To the food.
To the quiet evenings.
To the ridiculous beauty of ordinary life.

And perhaps that is one hidden gift of getting older.

We stop assuming time is infinite and begin treating it as meaningful instead.

Love starts looking different, too.

Less grand. More practical.

Love becomes:
“Let’s take care of ourselves.”
“Let’s walk tonight.”
“Let’s build the healthiest future we still can.”

Because sometimes the most romantic thing two people can do is fight for more ordinary days together.

At first, they exist only in your head.

You know how they walk.

How do they react?
What annoys them?
What makes them dramatic?
What makes them lovable?

But trying to explain that to another human being can feel a bit like describing a ghost.

“No, no… her expression needs to be more annoyed but still elegant.”

“She’s dramatic, but in a fluffy royal way.”

“She’s beautiful but slightly judgmental.”

Somewhere along the way, you begin sounding completely unhinged.

And yet, creators know exactly what this feels like. Because characters are not just drawings. Not really.

Good characters have emotional gravity.

They carry energy.

And when you are building a children’s book world, tiny details suddenly matter enormously: the shape of the eyes, the angle of the whiskers, the posture, the expression, and the amount of chaos contained inside one tiny black cat.

There were several moments during the creation of Salz & Peppa when I could feel we were close visually, but not fully there yet. And that is a surprisingly emotional place to exist as a creator.

Because part of you wonders:
Am I being too picky?
Too controlling?
Too perfectionistic?

But another part quietly whispers:
No. Keep going. They haven’t fully arrived yet.

I think creators sometimes ignore that inner voice too early because they are exhausted, rushed, nervous about budgets, or afraid of inconveniencing people.

But when you are building a long-term creative world, emotional alignment matters.

A lot.

Then one day, something shifts. You open a new illustration draft, and suddenly there she is.

Salz.

Not merely “a white cat.”

Not merely “cute.”

But Salz.

The expression.
The personality.
The attitude.
The energy.

She finally looked like herself.

Honestly, I think that moment surprised me emotionally more than I expected.

Because characters slowly stop feeling fictional after a while.

They become companions.
Tiny roommates living in the corners of your imagination.
Creatures with emotional fingerprints.

And finding the right illustrator is not just about artistic skill.

It is about translation. You are trusting another human being to see something invisible inside your head and help bring it into the visible world without damaging its spirit in the process. That takes talent. But it also takes trust.

I think that is why the right creative collaborations feel so magical when they finally happen. For a brief moment, two different imaginations somehow overlap in exactly the same place.

And suddenly, a little fictional cat who once existed only inside your brain is now staring back at you from the screen, looking deeply unimpressed with your decisions.

Which, honestly, means Salz is probably doing exactly what she was created to do.

When we are young, dreams often arrive loudly. They announce themselves with certainty:
“I want to be an artist.”
“I want to travel.”
“I want to write books.”
“I want to create something meaningful.”

Then adulthood enters, carrying invoices, exhaustion, grief, responsibilities, survival, heartbreak, practicality, and approximately seventeen browser tabs nobody remembers opening. Life redirects us. Sometimes necessarily. Sometimes painfully.

And after a while, many people quietly convince themselves that certain parts of who they once were have expired.

The creative part.
The adventurous part.
The hopeful part.
The imaginative part.

But lately I have started wondering if dreams are less fragile than we think. Maybe they do not disappear. Maybe they adapt. Maybe they simply wait for us to become someone capable of carrying them in a different way. Because here is what fascinates me:

The things returning to my life now are not random.

Storytelling.
Art.
Characters.
Wonder.
Community.
Building tiny worlds.
Writing things that make people feel less alone.

These are not “new” passions. They are old passions returning through new doors. And I think this happens to many people. The woman who loved painting as a child suddenly starts designing gardens at sixty. The teenager who wanted to write stories begins a blog decades later. The person who abandoned music starts learning piano after retirement.

The dream returns. Just wearing different clothes.

Older now. Wiser now.
Less interested in perfection. Less interested in applause. More interested in meaning.

I think there is something beautiful about that evolution. When you’re young, you often imagine dreams as giant finish lines. But adulthood reveals that many dreams are actually relationships. Living things.

They grow alongside us. Change shape alongside us. Survive seasons we assumed had killed them. Perhaps this is why creativity later in life feels so emotional for many people. It is not merely about making something. It is about reuniting with someone.

A forgotten version of ourselves. A younger self who once believed life might still contain magic. And maybe that younger self never fully disappeared. Maybe they simply sat quietly in the background all these years waiting for us to finally turn around and say: “I think we are ready now.”

Emotionally.
Culturally.
Creatively.
Spiritually.

Larger in possibility.

I have always been fascinated by the way other people quietly expand our understanding of life without even trying. Sometimes, it happens through travel. Sometimes, through friendship. Sometimes, through a simple sentence spoken over coffee.

“Oh, we don’t do that in England.”

I love moments like that. Tiny little reminders that the world is filled with billions of people all solving life differently.

Different foods.
Different humor.
Different traditions.
Different assumptions about what is “normal.”

And honestly, I think adulthood becomes dangerous when we stop allowing ourselves to be surprised. Children naturally expect discovery. Adults often expect repetition.

We settle into routines. Algorithms. Predictable conversations.
The same stores.
The same roads.
The same opinions.
The same people who already think like us.

Our worlds shrink quietly.

Not because we want them to. But because familiarity is efficient.

Yet every once in a while, someone enters our lives and throws open the windows.

Suddenly, we are discussing accents, recipes, weather, trains, customs, phrases, architecture, holidays, and stories from places we have never seen. Suddenly, the world feels textured again. Alive again.

I think this is one reason I love creativity so much. Stories do this too. Books enlarge us. Art enlarges us. Travel enlarges us. Curiosity enlarges us.

Even something as simple as making fairy houses with another person can become its own tiny form of cultural exchange. Two people sitting at a table covered in paint, moss, glue sticks, and laughter are still exploring the world together in a way.

Wonder is not always grand. Sometimes, wonder is simply remaining open.

Open to learning.
Open to listening.
Open to discovering that our own habits are not universal truths.

I have met people who have lived in the same town their entire lives and possess extraordinary curiosity about the world. I have also met people who traveled constantly yet remained emotionally closed to everything unfamiliar.

The difference is not mileage. It is openness. The people who change us most are often the ones who remind us there are still new things to notice.

New ways to think.
New ways to live.
New ways to connect.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts human beings can offer one another:

Not answers.

Expansion.

A gentle widening of the map.

It was tiny. Bright blue. And wearing what appeared to be a ridiculously small explorer hat.

“Well,” Amelia said carefully, “that can’t be normal.” The bug wiggled its antennae proudly.

Her tabby cat, Lizzie, narrowed her eyes from the bed. Lizzie had seen many suspicious things in her life: vacuum cleaners, bananas, and one deeply upsetting incident with a cucumber.

But this? This was new.

The little bug fluttered into the air and zipped around Amelia’s bedroom, leaving behind sparkling trails shaped like tiny airplanes.

“Oh no,” Amelia whispered.

She knew exactly what this meant. The Travel Bug had found her.

Legend said once the Travel Bug landed on your suitcase, ordinary life became impossible. Suddenly you wanted to:

• explore hidden streets

• try strange snacks

• learn new languages

• collect postcards

• ride trains

• meet people from different cultures

• and stare out airplane windows while pretending to be in a movie

“It’s too late for her,” Lizzie sighed dramatically.

The bug landed gently on Amelia’s shoulder. Then something magical happened.

Amelia could suddenly hear sounds she’d never noticed before: street musicians in Paris, market vendors in Morocco, children laughing in Tokyo, waves crashing along distant shores, church bells, train whistles, and voices from places she had never seen.

The world felt enormous. Beautifully enormous. The bug pointed one tiny leg toward a spinning globe on Amelia’s shelf.

“Where do you think it wants me to go?” Amelia whispered. Lizzie flicked her tail.

“Hopefully somewhere with snacks,” thought Lizzie.
