My band DRYP just released our debut EP!

The four of us met at the Banff Jazz and Sonic Arts residency last summer and immediately struck a musical bond. DRYP draws from New Rock, Shoegaze, and Free Improvisation to create a new sonic infusion of international world rock. We have one member from NYC (me), one from Canada (Sarah Rossy), and two Australians (Kyrie Anderson and Daniel Waddingham). It’s hard to get together to play/gig, but we have an Australian tour in the works for winter 2026, and a European tour in spring 2027. I play EWI in this band, though my roll is the bass. I’m playing sub/bass frequencies— holding the notes with either my EHX freeze pedal or the built in hold function on the EWI while also playing higher synthy lines & textures.

Little moment from with Twin Brother at Sultan Room-

Words honestly cannot describe how amazing of an experience I had. Everyone was incredibly interesting and good at what they do, and so kind. The faculty and staff were wonderful, and the campus and surrounding area was breathtakingly beautiful.

I arrived at 1am the night before the first day (not a great move in hindsight in hindsight) and the next morning I walked outside and saw this:

There were about 10 Elk just hanging out DIRECTLY outside the hotel. This became a regular occurrence around campus with deer, birds, and other assorted animals.

Everyone had huts with numbers (or a room inside the music building if you were a drummer or group). Here was the view from my skinny yet perfect window.

The first thing I created was something inspired by this view— it was a patch on my H9 called “pitchdrama”. It adds 3 extra intervals of your choosing above or below your note.

Here is a video of it in its early stages, followed by a more complete idea after some production was done and layers were added.

I later learned that all 6 saxophones attending Banff were placed in an ensemble together, so I ended up arranging the piece for the saxes. One soprano, two altos, and three tenors.

We were fortunate enough to be able to perform it at the end of the year, and also record a version in Telus Studio, with the help of the audio engineers who were attending the audio program happening at the same time. We were set up in a sort of half circle, and recorded the whole thing in 5.1 spacial audio, so that upon listening back everyone was placed in your ears exactly how we were set up in the room.

There’s so much more to say, but the last thing I’ll share is the last 3ish minutes of my solo set from “solo set night”. Towards the last night of the program we all decided to get together in Bentley hall and do solo sets for each other. Some brought pillows and blankets, and others sat in chairs, while we all took turns listening to each other.

Mine was about 9 minutes in total, but this is what’s on video:

For the next 3 weeks! To beautiful Banff, in Alberta, Canada! I’ll be attending the Jazz and Sonic Arts program, where participants get 3 weeks to attend workshops, have 1-on-1 time with faculty, and work in their own studio on whatever they want!

I’m super excited to just focus on writing and creating for that period of time. I’ll have my EWI, sax, pedals, interface, computer, various tape machines, and more, so I hope to do a lot of recording, hopefully some in the woods or on a mountain!

* take me by the hand - Oklou, Bladee
[I am very late to Oklou, but boy and I’m glad I stumbled accross them. I don’t remember who put me onto “God’s Chariot”, which was the first song I listened to, but almost every song I listen to by them is amazingly produced, with each plucky synth placed perfectly upon your ears. The sounds remind me of the VST “Diva”, if anyone knows. Cover of “God’s Chariot” on EWI is at the bottom under the “recent clips” section]

* 16 Bars - The Funky Knuckles
[This is a classic for me— just recently revisited it as it was the 11 year anniversary of the record coming out. This record perfectly captures high school me— kind of messy and all over the place, but also insanely driven and motivated. This song is pure feeling to me, nothing is like it.]

* Neste Mesmo Lugar - Quarteto Em Cy
[The beauty of a good choir is very hard to beat. I suggest you listen to this in the morning after you wake up, with your cup of coffee/tea/water/drink of choice. It will start your day well.]

* Projection - Logan Kane, Nicole McCabe
[An amalgamation of sounds, coming at you from all angles, but what else is new. The way Logan’s bass and Nicole’s sax are processed are so interesting to me— I’m always looking for new ways to process/effect acoustic instruments and this is something that I will have to try and emulate myself.]

I took it to Ted Klum in NJ, the maker of the mouthpiece, and in 30 minutes he glued the piece back on, AND put a beautiful brass ring around the shank. He told me that Sonny Rollins (or was it Stitt? I can’t remember now!!) was the first one to do it. He told me everyone was rushing to the jewelers shop to get it done after they saw his. Supposedly it mad the sound a little brighter, which I can believe, but really not sure if that remains true or not!

Anyway, the piano string broke during a solo piano interlude, so it was very noticeable! I debated for a moment if the right thing was to leave it in until Rahul was finished, but in the moment I decided to remove it. See the “recent clips” section for the video footage of how we broke a piano string at The Jazz Gallery, LOL.

[Classic New Wave 80’s, but from a more unknown artist. He had a hit or two but was widely under looked by most audiences. Such an interesting period of music!]

* El Rey De Mil Coronas - Lalo Mora
[Something I found during a recent trip to Mexico City— the accordion is so mesmerizing, and his voice powerful and cutting, yet still so emotional. Singing the blues over simple chord changes. The arrangement however is quite complex!]

This Friday I will be joined by some true NYC swingers at 41 Windsor Place, Brooklyn, NY to play some tunes, hang, eat, and have a swell time. There will be cheese, crackers, drinks, etc… and technically it’s a potluck! So you can bring your own snacks/entrees or just mooch off whoever does ;).

If you don’t know about Groupmuse, people who have spaces in their home volunteer to have a show put on in their space. You can have a 15 person capacity or a 50 person capacity, no space is too big/small. It works out very well for the musicians, as there is a suggested donation day of and all the money goes to the musicians! There are no worries about splits and percentages with the venue. *Since I don’t have much to post in this regard today— Instead, here are a couple of tapes I found in my grandfathers collection that I was going through while visiting last week. Some cases didn’t have tapes in them unfortunately… but some did, and I can’t wait to get a chance to listen to them. I love that to bootleg music back in the day you had to hook your tape recorder up to your radio and just record whatever was on, hoping to catch a good song and hoping the tape doesn’t run out mid-chorus. Occasionally you find something that isn’t on music streaming services or other platforms and it feels like you found lost treasure. Anyway, here they are:

Little EWI mess-around with some new gear I got! Picked up the Eventide H9 and it’s already blowing my mind. And before you ask what preset or whatever I have no idea, I’ve just been twisting knobs and not looking back! The phaser however is coming from some outboard gear I’m running this through— the t.c. electronic M300 and the Alesis MicroVerb 4. Both really cool pieces of old gear you could find for ~$100 online. In this video I’m also using the Rainger Reverb-X which is an insane gated reverb with distortion and a pressurized foot pedal that let’s you control the send and be really expressive.
