point. In the classical Ayurvedic map, the body contains 107 marma points, places where muscles, blood vessels, tendons, bones, joints, and nerves meet in subtle but vital ways.

Marmas weren’t treated as random dots on the skin. They were understood as places where the body’s organizing intelligence could be reached with care. Comparative study on marma and acupoints

Today, anatomical findings give us another language for the same understanding. Many marma points lie near important nerve pathways, sensory-rich tissue, vascular junctions, and the networks that link the brain to the heart, lungs, gut, and skin.

The ancient Ayurvedic map does not need to compete with the new one. It invites us to explore a truth that is available in our own experience: the body is constantly monitoring the quality of touch.

The places where the body listens

The Sanskrit word marma carries the sense of a hidden or vital point. Early Ayurvedic physicians recognized that certain areas of the body held special significance. Injury there could be serious. Careful attention there could support balance, circulation, comfort, and restoration.

Modern researchers are still working out how closely individual marma points can be matched to specific anatomical structures. Broad claims that all 107 points correspond exactly, one for one, to named autonomic plexuses or receptor clusters go beyond what science has conclusively established. Yet the central observation remains compelling: marma points are often located where several systems meet, including nerves, connective tissue, blood vessels, muscles, and joints. Synergistic Mapping of Marmas: An Anatomical–..

That is what makes them personally interesting. A marma is an invitation to bring awareness to a place where the body may be especially responsive. The evidence is partly scientific, partly traditional, and partly experiential. You can place a hand on your chest, feel your breathing change, and recognize that your own body has become the laboratory.

Your hands speak to your nervous system

We tend to think of touch as a local event. A hand touches a shoulder. A thumb presses the sole of a foot. Yet these local messages travel far beyond the skin.

Scientists have identified C-tactile afferents, a class of slow, unmyelinated sensory nerve fibers especially responsive to warm, caress-like stroking. Their activity tracks the pleasantness people report during slow touch, and brain imaging research links this kind of input to the posterior insula, a region involved in the felt condition of the body.

This helps explain why a caring hand on the arm, a foot massage at the end of a difficult day, or the ordinary comfort of holding someone close can affect more than mood. The nervous system receives a message about safety and connection. When that message is credible, the breath may lengthen, muscular guarding can ease, and the body has more room for digestion, immune maintenance, and repair.

Ayurveda would say that Prana, the life energy moving through us, has been invited to flow more harmoniously. Neuroscience describes sensory pathways, autonomic regulation, and interoception. Both descriptions point toward the same lived fact: our bodies respond to attention that is patient, warm, and present.

Three places to begin

The full marma map is traditionally studied with trained practitioners. For a home practice, there is no need to make touch forceful or complicated. The following three points offer a safe way to learn from direct experience.

Sthapani Marma: the space between the eyebrows

Place the pad of your middle finger at the midpoint between the eyebrows. Use light, steady contact for 30 seconds while breathing slowly. Do not press hard. Let the eyes relax and notice whether the forehead, jaw, breath, or stream of thoughts changes.

This is not a medical treatment for anxiety, insomnia, or any other condition. It is a short experiment in attention. For many of us, the front of the face carries the residue of effort. A pause here can help the whole system recognize that it does not have to keep pushing.

Hridaya Marma: the heart center

Place both palms over the center of your chest, at the sternum. Take five unhurried breaths. Feel the warmth of your hands and the movement of the rib cage beneath them.

The heart is surrounded by a rich network of nerves, including the cardiac plexus, and its rhythm is in continual conversation with the brain through the autonomic nervous system. Your hands cannot directly manipulate that network. They can offer the sensory conditions in which breathing slows and the body may shift toward rest. A hand over the heart is one of the oldest human gestures of reassurance for good reason.

Talahridaya Marma: the center of the sole

Before bed, warm a few drops of sesame oil between your hands. Massage the center of the sole of each foot with your thumb for about two minutes, using a comfortable circular motion. The feet are dense with sensory receptors and constantly report information about pressure, balance, texture, and movement to the brain.

This practice gives the day a physical ending. We spend hours standing, walking, and carrying ourselves forward. Touching the soles of the feet is one way of telling the body that it can set down its work.

One important boundary

The neck requires special respect. The carotid sinus, near the upper part of the neck, contains pressure sensors involved in blood-pressure regulation. In clinical settings, trained clinicians may massage this area for specific diagnostic purposes. It is not advised as a self-care marma practice, however. Carotid sinus massage can trigger dangerous changes in heart rhythm or blood flow and has clear medical contraindications, including recent stroke, transient ischemic attack, or heart attack.

The deeper principle of marma care is not force. It is responsiveness. If touch causes pain, dizziness, palpitations, numbness, or distress, stop. For persistent symptoms, the appropriate next step is to seek medical care. Clinical carotid sinus massage is reserved for appropriately screened and monitored contexts.

The intelligence beneath your hands

We live in a culture that often meets the body only when something goes wrong. Ayurveda offers a more intimate relationship. It asks us to meet the body daily, before distress becomes the only signal we can hear.

Place your hand between the eyebrows. Place both hands over your heart. Massage the soles of your feet before sleep. Then notice. Has the breath changed? Has the jaw let go? Is the mind less crowded? Does sleep arrive with more ease?

That noticing is qualia medicine. It honors scientific inquiry, while also recognizing that consciousness is where health is finally felt. The body’s intelligence network is already here, beneath your own hands, waiting for a few minutes of sincere attention.

In the next article, we will enter Rasayana, Ayurveda’s science of rejuvenation, and explore what modern research is discovering about herbs, cellular repair, resilience, and the possibility of rebuilding from within.

Namaste,
Deepak

Deepak’s latest book, Awakening in the Final Chapter is available for pre-order now and publishes September 8. convincing that like a magic trick, they seem totally real—until you see through them.

Four familiar illusions

Every few months the planet Mercury, the closest planet to the sun, appears to reverse its course in the sky. For thousands of years people watched this happen and wondered what it might mean for their lives. Today, if a friend’s cherished plans fall apart, someone at the table might smile and blame the retrograde.

But the sight of Mercury suddenly going backwards, in retrograde, is an illusion fostered by viewing it from Earth. Mercury never reverses. Rather, Mercury travels on an inner faster orbit around the sun, and every so often it overtakes Earth on our slower outer orbit. The backward motion depends entirely on where the Earth happens to be.

The reversal is completely real as something we see and yet completely illusory as anything Mercury is doing. The turning belongs to the relationship between them. It is something they do together.

The horizon offers us the same lesson. The far horizon at sea looks like a straight line, and there is nothing false about that, since across the few kilometers our eyes take in at once, the curve of the earth is too slight to notice.

The floor beneath your feet tells the same story. It feels completely still, even though the Earth is rotating at a thousand miles an hour with us on board.

Our own body offers the most intimate illusion: solidity. Reduce your hand, for example, down to atoms and molecules, and solidity is at the vanishing point. Ordinary matter is something like 99.9999999% empty space. What we feel as solidity when touching a table is the refusal of the electrons in the hand to share space with electrons in the table, an electromagnetic phenomenon we experience as one solid object contacting another.

The same simple mix-up

It is remarkable how everyday life is permeated by basic illusions. Mercury is retrograde. The Earth is flat. The floor is still. The hand is solid. Four honest reports about where we happen to be standing, mistaken for reports about reality. Each illusion works well enough for daily life, which is why we never question them. Flat maps get us across town. The floor holds. An assumption that never fails is one we never examine.

Where this touches your life

Now notice how unwittingly you put things in retrograde every day.

He is difficult. She is cold. I am shy. This meeting is boring. My brother is impossible. Every one of these is a retrograde sentence. Each describes something entirely real, and yet it is put in the wrong place, inside another person. In reality, these descriptions belong to a relationship, and the place it exists in is the space between two people.

I’m not suggesting that difficult people are secretly easy. Mercury really does appear to reverse, and no amount of good will makes that appearance go away. The difficulty someone makes for you is something the two of you are doing together, in the same way that retrograde motion is something Earth and Mercury do together.

Your own position is always part of what you see, and it is the one part you are free to change.

Consider what that gives us. “He is difficult” is a closed sentence that leaves us nothing to do but endure. “Something between us looks like it is running backward from where I stand” is an open sentence—we can walk around it and see it from another side.

The same is true of statements we make about ourselves, which are often the least forgiving. I am anxious. I am not the kind of person who can do this. These are facts about a relationship dressed up as facts about a self, and they have held together for so long that we stopped thinking to check.

What is left

If the place where you are standing is subjective and relative to the places where other people are standing, then what is truly fundamental? Not a physical object, because everything physical, from a planet to a subatomic particle, turns out to be known in shifting relationships.

Even if you adhere to spiritual teachings that place pure awareness as the ground of existence, the word “awareness” is misleading if we treat it as one more item on the list alongside matter and mind.

Awareness is what the list (and all words) is happening in. The Kena Upanishad says this without reservation: That by which the mind thinks, which the mind itself cannot think, know That alone as Brahman.

This is the wakefulness in which all of our looking has been happening, the presence never once absent from a single moment of your life. It has no age and no opinion about how your story has turned out.

None of this lifts us out of the lives we are actually living. The knees ache in the morning, or they don’t, and sooner or later a friend we have loved for fifty years will go before we are ready to let them go. This recognition does not spare us from the ups and downs of everyday life. What it offers is kinder than that. Mercury still turns backward in the sky, but now we have seen through the illusion, and we can afford to smile at it. The hand still holds its warm and intimate solidity, and we love it, because we finally know the awareness that holds both a hand and love. Their source is the source of creation.

A practice: one sentence, put right

Choose someone you find genuinely difficult, someone close enough that it matters.

Say the sentence you actually carry about them, silently and honestly. He is selfish. She never listens. There is no need to soften it or argue with it. Notice how closed it feels, as though the matter had been settled long ago.

Now say it again, putting yourself back into the picture. From where I am standing today, carrying what I am carrying, something between us looks like it is moving backward. Nothing here is any less true, and yet something has opened that the first sentence had sealed shut. The other person has not changed at all. The sentence has simply stopped being a wall.

Rest for three breaths and notice what is aware of both sentences without ever being either one.

Namaste,

Deepak

Deepak’s latest book, Awakening in the Final Chapter is available for pre-order now and publishes September 8. The finding was striking. In the meditators, 2,209 genes were expressed differently, most of them in networks that govern inflammation, energy metabolism, and the cellular stress response (Dusek et al., PLOS ONE, 2008).

A follow-up study in 2013 showed that even a single intensive day of meditation was enough to change the expression of inflammatory and epigenetic genes (Kaliman et al., Psychoneuroendocrinology, 2014). qualities called tanmatras. Sound, or Shabda, is the first of them. Touch, sight, taste, and smell arrive afterward. In this working model of reality, as in quantum theory, vibration is the substrate from which matter is composed, and the human nervous system is tuned to that substrate.

A thought “in here” is vibrationally connected to a physical result “out there.” Two worlds, mind and matter, are bridged every time you form a sound. The ancient practice of chanting a mantra was applied acoustics for the human being.

Your nervous system was tuned to sound before it was tuned to almost anything else. In infancy, before you understood a word your mother spoke, you knew when you were safe by the pitch and cadence of her voice. Your adult nervous system is still listening today.

Your nervous system is listening

Perhaps the clearest bridge between the Vedic teaching and modern science is Stephen Porges’s Polyvagal Theory. It centers on the hidden benefits derived from the state of a single cranial nerve, the vagus nerve, which emerges from the brain and reaches the heart, lungs, abdomen, and beyond.

Porges identified a specific band of acoustic frequencies, roughly 200 to 500 hertz, that the human ear and brainstem read as a signal of safety (Porges, Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine, 2009). This is the range of a warm human voice, of humming, and of chanting. Frequencies in this range engage the ventral vagal complex and shift the body out of defense into an open, receptive, healing state.

Why does this matter for your health? Because the state your nervous system spends most of its time in is a metabolic setting. In a defensive state your body diverts resources to survival. Blood pressure rises, digestion slows, immune cells stand down from routine maintenance, inflammation climbs, and repair work is postponed.

When the body shifts into the ventral vagal state, however, it resumes what it was designed to do at rest. Heart rate variability rises. Digestion and immunity come back online. Tissues get a chance to repair themselves.

Every hour you spend in the healing state is time your body is actually healing. Every hour you spend in low-grade defense mode is time it is not healing. Chronic disease, at the biological level, is largely the story of a nervous system that has forgotten how to come home.

Sound is one of the fastest known ways to invite it back.

Humming as pharmacology

In 2002, two researchers at the Karolinska Institute reported that humming increased the nitric oxide in nasal exhaled air fifteenfold compared with silent breathing (Weitzberg and Lundberg, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2002). Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, a bronchodilator, an antiviral agent, and a signaling molecule so important that its discovery earned the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

This means that every time a practitioner slowly drew out the long “mmm” of AUM through the nose, they were dosing themselves with a therapy whose active ingredient would take thousands of years to name scientifically.

Bija mantras and the doshas

Ayurveda goes further and matches specific seed syllables, or bija mantras, to specific constitutions described via the three doshas.

For Vata, the restless and airy dosha, the syllable Aim is clarifying and grounding. It gathers the scattered mind and gives the breath something steady to rest on.

For Pitta, the sharp and fiery dosha, the syllable Shrim is cooling and centering. It softens the edge without dulling the intelligence.

For Kapha, the heavy and slow to change dosha, the syllable Hum is penetrating and stimulating. It stirs the system awake.

You do not need to believe in any of this to test it. Sit quietly. Intone one syllable at a time on the exhale for a few minutes. Notice any subtle changes in the body, the breath, and the mind. That noticing is qualia medicine. The lab result is your own experience, and it is available whenever you sit down.

Sound in clinical settings

Hospitals have begun to catch up. Therapeutic singing programs are showing reductions in post-operative anxiety and pain. In group chanting studies with cardiovascular patients, heart rate and respiratory rhythms synchronize across the participants, a measurable coherence linked to better immune function (Bernardi et al., BMJ, 2001). A roomful of people breathing and vocalizing together briefly becomes one therapeutic instrument. Something in the biology recognizes what is happening and moves toward it.

A morning mantra protocol

Sit comfortably. Begin with a long, quiet “mmm” on the exhale, feeling the vibration in the chest, throat, and skull. Do this for five to seven breaths, or for as long as feels natural. Then move to So-Hum, silently receiving “So” on the inhale and releasing “Hum” on the exhale, for ten to fifteen minutes.

Notice your nervous system before you start and again when you finish. That comparison is the whole practice. You are letting the body remember what it already knows.

The receiver is already tuned

Sound moves through the body and is received by a nervous system already tuned to hear it. There are 107 specific points on the body where reception is amplified, and where the concentration of what Ayurveda calls pranic intelligence is measurably higher. In the next article, we enter the world of Marma, the biofield map, to discover what its most vital points correspond to in the nervous system, in areas that modern anatomy is still mapping.

Until then, hum. The pharmacy is inside you, and it opens the moment you exhale.

Namaste,

Deepak

Deepak’s latest book, Awakening in the Final Chapter is available for pre-order now and publishes September 8. something, call it awareness, being, or consciousness, without which we would not be able to think or perceive anything. Scientific validation is not as important as everyone’s firsthand experience of awareness as the most basic state of being human. Awareness is in the background of every thought, just as the light in a room lies behind the objects the room contains.

Awareness, being ever-present, is merged with the individual self. Yet we are in the habit of feeling separate. As soon as we say, “Let’s examine reality,” we have set the examiner apart from the thing being examined. This separation, or duality, comes so naturally that it is hard to defy.

The individual self cannot cross this gap between duality and wholeness. The rational mind is a surveyor, drawing borders wherever it looks. Send it to measure the borderless, and it returns with no map at all.

A different kind of knowing

Every tradition that has taken this gap seriously has arrived at the same suspicion: that reality is hidden from everyday sight, and yet it must be present. The Upanishads call this pratyabhijñā, recognition, the sudden noticing of what was never absent. In modern times Ramana Maharshi pointed to it as the collapse of the “I-thought” into its source.

In his third Yoga Sūtra, the ancient sage Patañjali describes what happens as tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe’vasthānam, the Seer abides in its own nature.

That nature is the universal Self, which is borderless, formless, and infinite. This Self does not need to seek a way out of duality, because it is already whole. You do not learn about the universal Self the way you learn things in school. You merely cease to overlook it. The knower, in its purity, is what you were looking for all along.

Three doorways that actually work

The Indian traditions offer three doorways to noticing the ground of being in the Self. These are ways of thinning the veil of habitual overlooking.

The first is the way of the witness. It pares down appearances until awareness stands in the foreground, uncluttered. You sit and notice what awareness is not, known in Sanskrit as neti, neti, meaning “not this, not that.” Not the body, the breath, or thoughts, all of which arise and pass away. Not even the witness as a located watcher, because it too is a subtle object. Subtract everything you are not, and what remains is pure awareness, needing nothing outside itself.

The second way is a threshold between the individual mind and awareness. The Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra offers 112 of these. The ones that work most reliably are the seams of ordinary experience: kumbhaka, the natural pause between the out-breath and the in-breath, or the half-second when a song you love ends and the silence has not yet arrived. In such moments, form thins and the formless is briefly revealed.

The third way is devotion, wonder, and aesthetic shock. An intense experience of beauty, love, or awe collapses the subject-object duality without argument. A piece of music that undoes you. The dignity of great old age. The way a child laughs in the next room. In such moments the “I” briefly forgets to defend itself, and the ground of Being shines through the opening.

The paradox of finding Reality

Although the three doorways are easily described, the seeker faces a paradox. How can you test what is real when, by definition, any test falls short of pure Being, and yet pure Being is what you are after? If the Real is the ground of every test, then testing it is circular.

Whatever can be tested is not it, because tests are looking for an object. Whoever is doing the testing is it, because the observer and the observed are aspects of the same wholeness.

This is illustrated by the futility of looking for awareness in the brain. Neuroscience can map brain activity with more and more precision, but that activity is the fingerprint of awareness, not awareness itself. Brain maps presuppose a mapmaker who is never found on the map.

A short practice

Words can only walk you to the door. Read this slowly, then close your eyes and let it happen.

Find a comfortable seat. Take three slow breaths, only to arrive.

Feel the body’s weight, its temperature, the places it touches the chair. The body appears to you. Ask, gently: to whom does the body appear? Do not answer with a thought. Let the question rest.

Notice the breath. It arises and passes in something that does not. To whom does the breath appear?

Watch a thought arise, then pass. Watch the small space between two thoughts. They come, they go, and something remains. To whom do thoughts appear?

Now notice that even the watcher is itself something noticed. What is aware of the observer?

Here something interesting happens. There is no next thing to point to. The pointing collapses into itself. The knower and the known fold into a single presence that has no edge, no location, no shape. You cannot find it, because it is what is looking.

Resting in simple awareness is what remains when the person, the individual self, is no longer being manufactured. This untouched and untouchable awareness has been present in every moment of your life. It went unnoticed only because it has never left.

So, how can we know fundamental reality?

By noticing the only thing that has always been there. The universal Self is known through nonseparation. You are what you have been trying to find. Every path, every practice, every explanation is a finger pointing at the moon that is already shining.

May you recognize, today, what has always recognized you.

Namaste,

Deepak

Deepak’s latest book, Awakening in the Final Chapter is available for pre-order now and publishes September 8.
