The Sussex return has reshuffled the board in ways that would have seemed implausible as recently as July. Several names have moved dramatically. Names have left the list entirely. One name appears for the first time, against my better instincts, for reasons I will explain.

Power, in the Palace, is rarely what it appears. That has not changed. What has changed is who holds it.

1. King Charles III

I have described Charles as the chess king, the piece we must protect rather than the piece that wins the game. The piece now influences the rest of the board by action or inaction.

The Sussex return has clarified something. Every significant decision in the weeks and months ahead runs through one person. Does Harry receive an invitation to Balmoral? Does Charles facilitate any meeting with William, or leave that to circumstance? What acknowledgment, if any, is made of Archie and Lilibet’s enrollment in a British school? What does the King say publicly, and what does he conspicuously not say?

Every one of these choices is Charles’s alone, and every one of them has consequences for at least four other names on this list. That is the definition of power. He is number one.

But here we are, approaching midnight, and I find my better angels simply cannot compete with this particular story.

The short version, the attention getting headline, the phrasing that is keeping me up, is that Harry wants an apology.

What the Mail is reporting should not surprise anyone who has followed this situation with any real attention. And yet, I confess, it does. Not because Harry is still angry. Anger is a remarkably durable thing, especially when it has been given a professional infrastructure to sustain it. What surprises me is the return itself having apparently changed nothing, not the temperature, not the posture, not the expectation that a formal apology is somehow still forthcoming.

The phrase used, ‘that Oprah mindset,’ is rather good, actually. Uncharitable, perhaps, but not imprecise. What it captures is that Harry has organized his grievances into a settled worldview, and worldviews of that kind do not simply dissolve because one has moved house.

The mention of Diana concerns me more than the rest of it. There is a Diana Anniversary on the horizon, a year away now, and this family has never managed that particular date with much grace even in calmer times. Before that, we have the Diana Awards and the suggestion of a Meghan Appearance. I have no doubt William will be off somewhere being furious.

Bringing Meghan into an event directly connected to her memory, in her first major public appearance back in Britain, is the kind of decision that would require very delicate handling. I do not see the Sussexes doing much delicate handling of any of their endeavors. Whether delicate handling is something this particular camp is capable of, I leave to future historians.

We also have a possible return of Sarah Ferguson to deal with this week, but I really must sleep.

Before we begin, I understand my August Royal Rankings upset some of you. I stand by them. We will return to the subject shortly, as it is nearly the first of September and an updated set of rankings is due. There have been, as you will have gathered, some developments to incorporate.

Those of you who have been with us since the beginning of the month may recall that the first two weeks of August were rather quiet. I appreciate your patience through that period. I think we can agree the second half has more than compensated. I am grateful to the Sussexes for their timing, if not always for their choices.

Today, however, we are not talking about rankings. We are talking about money.

The Sussexes purchased their Montecito estate in June 2020, six months after stepping back from royal duties. If the reporting I read is correct, he property sits on 7.38 acres east of Santa Barbara. Nine bedrooms. Their company, Rockbridge LLC, paid $14.65 million, financing the purchase with a $9.52 million loan from City National Bank at an adjustable rate of 2.49 per cent.

At that rate, allowing for the possibility of inaccurate reports and looser math, on a thirty-year term, the monthly mortgage repayment is approximately $37,566. Annually, that is $450,792. Property taxes last year came to $149,668.

The combined annual cost of holding the Montecito estate, before staff, maintenance, chicken minders, or the rather considerable cost of commuting between California and the Cotswolds, is somewhere in the region of $600,000.

I understand the Sussexes also own a property in Portugal, believed to have been purchased approximately three years ago for £6.3 million. Reports suggest the family spent much of this past summer there. It does not appear to be going anywhere either.

The property the Sussexes are reportedly seeking in this region is valued at around £8 million. I mention this because there is a tendency in some coverage to frame the Sussex return as a kind of modest, private retreat, a couple quietly slipping back into British life. Eight million pounds is not a quiet slip. It is not where you find me today. Combined with the decision to keep Montecito and maintain Portugal, it describes a family managing a property portfolio across three countries simultaneously.

One does not do that on a whim.

The £9.5 million in legal costs awarded to Associated Newspapers Limited, following the privacy case brought by Harry and a group of co-claimants including Sir Elton John, was due yesterday, the 28th of August. The amount is shared among seven claimants, which reduces Harry’s individual exposure considerably, but even nine divided by seven garners a number most don’t have on hand.

Taken together, the financial picture is clarifying. The decision to retain Montecito while simultaneously seeking an £8 million Cotswolds property is not the behaviour of a couple who are uncertain about whether this will work. Nor is it the behaviour of a couple who intend a clean break from California. It is, rather, the behaviour of a couple who are restructuring, not relocating.

The source who told the Daily Mail that Harry sees himself in Britain for “the next twelve to fifteen years, minimum” is consistent with this picture. So is the description of Meghan taking on an “international role,” coming and going between Britain and California, where the As Ever brand and Archewell Productions are based. The chickens, still in Montecito, make sense within this framework. One does not maintain a working flock for a property one intends to sell. The chickens, one hopes, are appreciative of their lifestyle. Some chickens are tenders, these chickens have tenders.

In short, is that the Sussexes seem to have planned this rather carefully, and the plan involves keeping as many options open as possible for as long as possible. That is not, I think, a criticism. It is simply an observation about how people who have made several significant errors of strategic judgment in recent years tend to operate when they finally decide to be cautious. If nothing else, in my opinion, they do seem terrible at reading a room.

The Cotswolds remains very quiet. I have royals to rank.

Yesterday, in this column, I offered certain estimates about the nature and cost of the aircraft that brought the Sussexes to Britain. Those estimates were assembled in some haste, with the assistance of my American friends at the podcast and whatever I could establish in the time available, and even a little intelligence one might consider artificial.

HELLO! magazine has since confirmed the details. The aircraft was a Planet 9 Airbus A321. Seats Thirteen passengers. Sleeping arrangements for six, including a double bed and individual beds. Two bathrooms. Two. For Thirteen. A sofa. Leather seating. Room for fifteen suitcases. Estimated cost: between £150,000 and £200,000.

I had suggested £150,000 to £300,000. One does not like to overclaim. But one is, on this occasion, content.

I may have underestimated my skills as an aviation reporter.

Now to the matter that is, I will admit, rather more personal to me than I would ordinarily disclose.

The Sussexes are reported to be house-hunting in the Cotswolds. This has produced a considerable amount of comment from local residents, some of it colourful, most of it predictable. A pensioner named Zana Aires told a Daily Express reporter that the couple were a “disgrace” and “should be banned.” Others worried about royal drama being reignited. Others still, and this is the concern I find most understandable, worried about tourism.

I have a small property in the Cotswolds. I have had it for a number of years, purchased at a time when such things were possible without requiring the financial arrangements one now associates with royalty or years driving sports cars on television. It is not grand. It is in a quiet area, the kind that does not attract much attention, and I had rather hoped to keep it that way.

The tourism concern is not new. It predates the Sussexes by well over a decade. The Cotswolds has been managing the consequences of its own beauty for some time, and the arrival of a globally famous couple, one of whom has a particular talent for generating media attention, will not make this simpler. One resident told the Express the effect could be “another Clarkson’s Farm.” I understand the anxiety. Jeremy Clarkson’s Oxfordshire operation is a perfectly pleasant farm, but it is not, by any measure, quiet.

I should note, The Cotswolds is already home to a number of well-known faces. Famous neighbours are not, in themselves, the catastrophe some imagine.

And I will confess this: my American friends with the podcast would observe, correctly, that my own professional fortunes are not entirely unconnected to public fascination with the Sussexes. One can hold two thoughts at once. The tourist numbers may well increase. The column may also benefit. I am not, on reflection, entirely opposed to having interesting neighbours, provided they are not directly adjacent.

The property the Sussexes are reportedly seeking is valued at approximately £8 million. This is not a quiet cottage in an unfashionable village. This is a statement of intent, and I will have rather more to say about the full financial picture tomorrow.

I am heading to the Cotswolds this evening, as I do most weekends inAugusts. I had planned this weekend well before any of this week’s news was announced, and I see no reason to alter my plans on account of it.

Friday’s column will concern the numbers in some detail, the California property, the Portugal house, the legal bill due tomorrow, and what all of it tells us about what the Sussexes are actually planning. I will file it from the Cotswolds and let you know if I see any moving vans.

A note about today. I am discussing things in which I am not expert. Private jets. The nuances of importing animals. Everything you are about to read may be incorrect.

They landed at Birmingham Airport shortly before noon on Wednesday. A private flight from California. I don’t have to tell you who They are.

No fanfare, no statement, no visible police presence as the family made their way out, which is a fascinating detail isn’t it? The spokesman offered, with admirable economy, that this was not something they would comment on.

The details are where the truth lives. Let me take them in order.

The Plane

The BBC confirmed the Sussexes flew privately. This matters for a reason that has nothing to do with luxury and everything to do with a public identity Harry has spent years carefully constructing.

My American friends with the podcast shared with me that estimates for a long-range private jet charter from California to Birmingham range from one hundred fifty thousand to three hundred thousand dollars, depending on the aircraft and whether or not you consider American podcasters to be experts on aircraft.. I am also told that a flight of this length, on a private aircraft, can produce somewhere in the range of twenty to forty tonnes of carbon dioxide.

I raise this not to pile on, but because Harry has, in his own words from 2021, said he believes “climate change and mental health are two of the most pressing issues that we’re facing.” He has said this in speeches, in interviews, in his public capacity as someone who genuinely cares about the environment. One can simultaneously believe he means it and observe that a private transatlantic flight sits uneasily alongside that position.

It is worth noting, that last night, August 25, there were at least eight nonstop commercial departures from Los Angeles to London Heathrow, operated by United, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and American Airlines, spread across the afternoon and evening. Any of them would have landed at Heathrow this morning in time to make Birmingham by noon. The Sussexes did not take any of them. They flew privately to Birmingham instead. One can advance entirely legitimate reasons for this, security considerations foremost among them, and I do not dismiss those reasons. But the commercial option existed, repeatedly, and was declined. That is a choice, and one imagines that in the interest of making the move happen, Harry chose not to tell The Duchess she would be seated in a middle on American Airlines Flight 286.

The Chickens

The dogs, Mia and Pula, made the journey. The chickens are remaining in Montecito.

I mention this because it is, in the arithmetic of relocation, an honest signal. Dogs travel because they are part of the family. Chickens stay because someone intends to go back and feed them. The Sussexes are not closing the California chapter. They are leaving it open, deliberately, and the chickens are their way of saying so without saying so.

As an expert on pet immigration as of the last five minutes, I can tell you bringing pets from the United States to Britain does not require quarantine, provided the paperwork is in order: microchip, rabies vaccination, a health certificate, and a tapeworm treatment administered by a vet between twenty-four hours and five days before arrival. You may have noticed my prose changed there. one might call it artificial in tone.

What it does require, on a commercial flight, is that the animals travel as cargo rather than in the cabin with their owners. On a private charter, that restriction does not apply. Mia and Pula, if they made the journey, could have done so in the cabin alongside the family, cleared through Birmingham’s pet entry procedures without quarantine, and arrived rather more comfortably than the hold of a 747 would have permitted.

My expert research tells me at Heathrow, the dogs would be taken directly from the aircraft to the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre in a climate-controlled vehicle. Staff put the dog in a kennel, give it water, and dogs have access to an outdoor run. They then scan the microchip and check the health paperwork. A customs agent clears the animal, and only after that can the owner collect it. Heathrow says the process averages two to four hours after the flight lands.

All the while, the Duchess of Sussex patiently waits the two to four hours after flying ten hours in a middle. One understands why Harry may have chosen the private jet.

What the Institution Has Said

The King Is saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton. At times what is not said says many things.

They are here. The thing has happened. The children will be in school next week. Harry will be at WellChild and Invictus events in September. The Diana Awards loom. William has not said a word, not even about Dolly.

The telephone has been rather busy. Actual voice calls the way telephones were meant to be used. Perhaps that telegraphs the ages of the people who inform me. I assure you it is a good thing. There are not junior publicists texting.

I am hearing that the Sussexes’ own circle cannot agree on how long this return is meant to last. “Extended period” is the phrase the official representative used to the New York Times, and if you have spent any time around communications professionals, even a junior publicist, you will recognise “extended period” as a phrase specifically chosen to mean nothing while appearing to mean something. One source, described as close to Harry, told the Sunday Times that they might simply decide to try Canada, or Australia, or somewhere else entirely. I note that Archie and Lilibet are enrolled in school in Britain. One generally does not enroll children in school in Britain to commute from Australia.

I am hearing that Harry’s vision of this return and Meghan’s vision of this return are not the same vision. Harry’s involves the Cotswolds, Meghan’s involves the business.

On to the rumor mill.

A report surfaced over the weekend, from Rob Shuter, a man with a seemingly unending number of sources who all go unnamed. In this version of events, the Netflix cameras are expected to follow Harry and Meghan to England. A source, unnamed as always, is quoted as saying: “They believe this is the show that can change everything for them. The return to Britain is the story. The cameras will be there to capture it. They know the royal family is still the biggest story they have. They walked away from it, but now they are walking back toward it, and Netflix wants a front-row seat.”

But I have been asked what I make of it. And the answer is that if it is true, it is the single most self-defeating thing I can imagine them doing at this particular moment, and I have been imagining quite a few things this week. I also believe it is possible.

Everything that might conceivably work in Harry’s favour over the coming months depends on a degree of good faith being extended by the people who hold the keys to what he actually wants. He wants proximity to his father. He wants his children to know their grandfather. He wants, I suspect, some form of re-entry into the family in which he was raised, however that is eventually configured. He wants William to shake his hand. He wants family Christmas, or something that resembles it.

None of those things are available to a man with a camera crew. However, none of those things pay the bills. Which one wins out remains to be seen.

I will be direct: the Royal Family will not participate, even tangentially, in anything that ends up on Netflix. Not Charles. Certainly not William. The Palace’s institutional memory of the last Netflix project, the one that began as a love story and ended as a prosecution, is not something that fades in eighteen months. If Harry arrives with cameras, the doors that might have begun to open close again, quietly and completely, and the people inside them do not feel obligated to explain why.

The “private royals-plus” concept, already acknowledged by its own proponents to be implausible, becomes entirely impossible the moment a production crew is involved. You cannot be a private royal and a Netflix subject simultaneously. The categories are not compatible.

William, who is already navigating the question of how to handle his brother’s presence in Britain without either surrendering ground or manufacturing a scene, would be handed the simplest justification in the world for keeping his distance. One does not attend events alongside someone who is filming them for global distribution.

There is also the question of what such a production would actually show. The last time Harry and Meghan brought cameras to document their royal adjacency, the result was a six-episode series that the family experienced as an act of war. The proposition that a sequel, filmed during an attempted reconciliation, would be received differently requires a degree of institutional goodwill that I do not believe currently exists.

I have a theory about why this rumor exists, whether or not the cameras actually show up. The Sussex operation has, for some years now, run on the logic that visibility is leverage, that being filmed is a form of protection, that the story told on their terms is preferable to the story told without them. That logic made a certain sense when they were in California and the British press was the adversary. It makes no sense in the current configuration. The audience they need to persuade is not on Netflix. It is at Balmoral, and at Windsor, and in the offices of people who take their calls based on trust.

My advice: put the cameras away. All of them. Demonstrate, by the absence of documentation, that this return is something other than content.

The family into which Harry was born, will notice. They notice everything. They simply prefer not to say so. That is, in the end, rather the point.

A brief housekeeping note before we proceed, because the past week has brought a gratifying number of new readers to this column, and it seems only courteous to explain how this works.

Now. There is a great deal to discuss.

The weekend produced something I find rather more useful than the breathless announcement coverage of last week: actual reporting, from people who appear to have spoken to individuals who know something. I want to work through it carefully, because I think it changes the picture in ways that have not yet been fully absorbed.

Tom Sykes, writing in The Daily Beast, or was it The Royalist, or both, I get confused, and it doesn’t really matter. Sykes published material he had been holding for a book, specifically a conversation conducted in March of this year with a friend of Harry’s. I will not reproduce it at length here, as you can read it yourself, but the essential shape of it is this: Harry wanted to come back to Britain regardless of the security question, intended to base himself in the Cotswolds, and the question of what Meghan would do was met by his friend with a shrug, described as being offered “without any observable discomfort.” The friend acknowledged there was no strong practical reason for Meghan to be based anywhere other than the United States, given that her As Ever brand is a Californian proposition built around Montecito sunshine and the lifestyle that comes with it.

I take this seriously. Sykes is not a gossip merchant. He held the material for months and has published it now because events have made it relevant. The friend’s shrug is, in my reading, the most significant detail in any piece published about this family in the past week. Shrugs of that kind, offered without observable discomfort, are not nothing. They are a kind of answer.

The press has settled, somewhat chaotically, around three explanations for what is actually happening, and I want to give you my honest assessment of each.

A small confession before I begin. I wrote most of what follows on Friday, at a point when the week’s most significant development appeared to be the Sussex return itself. By the time Friday afternoon arrived, a rather large court judgment had entered the picture, and I will admit that I sat with my notes for some time wondering whether the argument I had intended to make still held.

The argument I want to make today is a longer one, a structural one, and it does not depend on any single week’s headlines to be true. If circumstances have shifted further between my writing and your reading, I ask your indulgence. August is suddenly moving quickly. I do not.

There is a question at the center of this week’s events that has gone almost entirely unasked, buried under the noise of the announcement and the legal ruling and the speculation about William’s feelings. The question is this: who is going to do the work?

I do not mean this rhetorically. I mean it as a matter of institutional arithmetic.

The British monarchy is, at its operational core, a visibility machine. It functions by being seen, by placing members of the Royal Family at hospitals and regimental dinners and charity galas and Commonwealth meetings and trade missions, in a continuous and geographically distributed presence that affirms the institution’s relevance and reach.

So. Who is doing the seeing?

The Prince and Princess of Wales are the center of the working monarchy, and they carry that weight with considerable grace. They are also, and this is simply a fact and not a criticism, two people with three young children, a vast portfolio of responsibilities, and the reasonable expectation that the workload will only grow as they move toward succession. You cannot ask the center to do everything.

The Princess Royal is, and I say this with the deepest admiration, a force of nature. She has served this institution with a dedication that has never been properly celebrated, and she continues to serve it well past the age at which most people have retired. She will not, however, be doing so indefinitely. Time is merciless, and it does not negotiate with royal schedules.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Edward and Sophie, are willing and diligent and genuinely committed. They do the work. The work needs doing. But a monarchy that relies on them as its primary supplementary force is a monarchy that is operating on a thinner margin than it should.

The younger generation, the Wales children and the others, are years from working royal status. One does not ask a teenager to open a hospital wing.

And then there is Harry.

The Argument Nobody Wants to Make

I am going to make it anyway, because I have been in and around this institution long enough to know that it always, eventually, makes the sensible decision, even when the sensible decision is uncomfortable.

Harry and Meghan, returned to Britain, settled and visible, represent a solution to a problem that William does not yet want to acknowledge he has. They are capable, experienced, internationally recognized, and possessed of a genuine ability to generate the kind of attention and engagement that the monarchy requires to remain relevant in the twenty-first century. Meghan in particular has a reach in certain parts of the world, and among certain demographics, that no other member of the Royal Family can match.

I am not suggesting that old wounds should be healed for the sake of family harmony, though I would not object to that outcome. I am making a purely institutional case. The Firm needs bodies. Specifically, it needs visible, capable, internationally compelling bodies. Harry and Meghan are available.

The King is, in my estimation, the only person currently positioned to begin this process, and he has a window that will not remain open indefinitely.

What I would expect, and what I believe the more thoughtful people around the King would counsel, is a gradual and undramatic reintegration. Not a grand reconciliation ceremony. Not a joint appearance calculated to generate headlines. Something quieter: an invitation to an occasion of modest but genuine significance, a Commonwealth event perhaps, or a military commemoration at which Harry’s service record makes his presence natural and appropriate. A handshake that the cameras catch but that nobody had to arrange for the cameras to catch.

Charles has the instinct for this, I think. He has spent his entire adult life navigating the space between what the institution requires and what the family can manage. This is precisely the kind of maneuver he understands.

William’s Dilemma

The Prince of Wales is not going to welcome this argument, and I say that with full awareness of the complexity of his position. He is a man who has been wronged, in ways both private and very publicly recorded, by his brother, and he is not obligated to pretend otherwise. His feelings are legitimate.

They are also, in the context of the institution he will one day lead, a secondary consideration.

When William is King, he will inherit a monarchy that requires a functioning bench. He will have his children, who will be extraordinary, and he will have his wife, who already is, and he will have the remainder of whoever is still standing and willing. If Harry and Meghan have, by that point, reintegrated themselves usefully into the working structure of the institution, William will not dismantle that. He is too sensible, and too institutional, to sacrifice operational capacity for the satisfaction of a grievance.

What he cannot do, as King, he may not be able to prevent as Prince of Wales. That, too, is a kind of window.

I will close with a different observation, one that has less to do with Harry and Meghan and more to do with the institution that is, quietly, deciding what to do with them.

The British monarchy has survived things that would have destroyed any other institution. It has survived abdications and scandals and wars and the dissolution of an empire. It has survived, more recently, the loss of the woman who was its moral center for seventy years. It has survived because it is, beneath all the pageantry, a profoundly pragmatic organism. It adapts. It absorbs. It finds a way to make use of what is available to it.

Harry and Meghan are available.

The institution knows what to do with that. It always has.

Not the Harry of the lawsuits and the memoirs and the Netflix documentaries. Not the Harry of the carefully managed statements and the Montecito press operation. I want to talk about the other one. The one I remember. Because I think he may be the key to understanding what is actually happening here, and I am not certain the press has spent much time thinking about him.

Harry, in the way one comes to know members of this family, before the complications set in, was, and I say this with genuine fondness, an absolute handful, and entirely charming with it. There was a directness to him that the Royal Family does not typically produce, a lack of pretension that sat oddly alongside his circumstances but suited him rather well. He was not his grandmother’s equal in discipline, nor his father’s equal in patience, but he had something neither of them quite possessed in the same quantity, a natural ease with ordinary people that required no effort and no performance. It was simply there.

He was also someone who understood instinctively what the job was. The charity work, the military service, the tours, the handshakes, the hospital visits. He was good at it. Not merely competent, actually good. People were glad to see him. That is rarer than it sounds.

I think about that Harry when I consider this week’s news.

There is something I have observed, over many years of watching this family, that I have come to think of as a kind of gravitational field. Britain exerts a pull on its royals that does not relax simply because they relocate.

In California, Harry was famous, as these things go. But California is a place of enormous and varied fame. There are film stars and tech founders and musicians and athletes, and the famous are simply the famous, a category containing multitudes, each of roughly comparable altitude. Harry was a celebrity among celebrities, a title among titles, a notable among notables. Whatever room he entered, there were other rooms of equal weight nearby.

The moment he steps back onto British soil, that changes. Entirely and immediately. He is no longer a celebrity among celebrities. He is the King’s son. It is a category of two, of which he will always be the lesser. As time passes he will likely be The King’s Brother and then The King’s Elderly Uncle.

The media, the public, the institution, the crowds, all of it bends toward him in a way that California simply could not replicate. He is not a man who moved to a new house. He is a prince who came home. Britain will not let him be anything else.

I suspect, though I cannot know, that he has missed that. Not the scrutiny, not the pressure, not the obligation. But the gravity itself. The sense of mattering in a way that is specific and irreplaceable and tied to something larger than celebrity.

There is a particular quality to British public life that Americans sometimes struggle to fully appreciate, which is that it has a very long memory and a very particular kind of forgiveness. This is a country that watched a young man dress as a Nazi at a costume party and, on balance, decided he was still fundamentally one of ours. It watched him stumble, quite publicly, through his twenties, and it did not write him off. It was waiting to see what he would become.

What he became, for a time, was genuinely admirable. The Invictus Games alone represent a body of work that most people in public life never approach. Whatever else has happened, that stands.

The question now, the one that will take months rather than days to answer, is which Harry gets off the plane. The one I described above, or the one who has spent several years in a posture of grievance, building a case against the institution and the country and the press, a case that, as of Friday, has cost him dearly in ways financial and reputational alike.

I do not know the answer. I am not certain he does either.

I will tell you what I believe, for whatever it is worth on a Saturday morning.

I believe the old Harry is still in there. I think Britain will find him faster than California did, because Britain is where he was formed, and formation runs deep.

I think he is tired. I think the American chapter was harder than he anticipated and less rewarding than he hoped. I think coming home, whatever the complications and there are many, felt like a relief.

Whether it was the right move, and whether it works, is a story that has barely begun.

I will be here on Sunday with some thoughts on where this might go.

One of my oldest and most trusted contacts in these matters, has a saying I have borrowed so frequently over the years that it has by now become my own: one does not burn bridges, for the very simple reason that once burned, those bridges no longer work.

I have thought of him rather a lot this week.

Before I proceed to the substance of what I know and what I believe, a word to those of you reading these lines in full: thank you. This column exists because a sufficient number of you have decided that considered, sourced analysis of the British Royal Family is worth something, and that “worth something” occasionally means worth paying for. I do not take that lightly. The deeper pieces live behind the paywall because producing them properly requires time, contacts, and a certain willingness to pick up the telephone at hours one would prefer not to. You make that possible, and I am genuinely grateful.

For those on the free tier: do not despair. I am producing two pieces this weekend. I will write them today and mention this because I am rather fond of my August holiday and have absolutely no intention of rearranging it to accommodate the Sussex news cycle. Both will be free to all, and I rather think you will enjoy it. I also note, with whatever grace I can assemble, that Thursday’s analysis appears to have generated a pleasing wave of new subscribers. To those who have just joined us: welcome. And to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, I suppose I owe you a thank you for the timing, if nothing else. I had felt guilty that most of August’s writing was simple and flighty. Things appear to have gotten more interesting.

I have spent the better part of this week in conversation with people who actually know this family, not those who write about them, not those who appear on television to speculate about them with great confidence and limited information, but people who have, at various points, been in the room. What follows is my attempt to make sense of a story that the British press has gotten approximately half right, while conspicuously missing the more interesting half.

The Notification Sequence

When the news broke on Wednesday evening that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were returning to Britain , I confess I reached for another glass. Not out of distress. Out of a kind of grim recognition. Those of us who have been watching this family for a long time had a sense that something was shifting. I will admit, freely, that the speed of it surprised even me.

My producer John posted an image attached to Wednesday evening’s article that, as far as I can tell, none of you caught the meaning of. Perhaps he was being too subtle. I will return to it shortly, because I believe it contains the most important frame for understanding what has actually happened here.

For now, let me say this: the commentary class has spent the past sixteen or so hours generating an impressive quantity of heat and a rather modest quantity of light. William is “apoplectic.” Charles is “welcoming.” The Sussexes have “triumphed.” None of this is quite right, and paying subscribers deserve better than received wisdom dressed up as analysis.

I have taken that at face value and looked at what that would actually mean. With some dramatic license, I am writing as if this is actually happening. It is not, and it will not, at least not via abdication.

William Arthur Philip Louis Windsor has been preparing for this moment, in one form or another, since he was nine years old and stood in a Welsh cathedral and watched his grandmother place a coronet on his father’s head.

He has not prepared for it like this, not with three months’ notice, not in circumstances of his father’s own choosing, not with the particular psychological complexity of receiving a crown that was handed to him rather than falling to him through the natural order of mortality.

When the sovereign dies, there is grief. Grief simplifies. Grief gives the new monarch a clean emotional mandate: the nation mourns together, and then it pivots together toward the new reign. The transition is painful but legible.

What William faces is something altogether stranger. His father is alive. His father is, by all accounts, in reasonable health. His father will be at the abdication ceremony, there must, of course, be an abdication ceremony, and will then continue to exist, in proximity, with opinions and preferences and, quite possibly, things to say.

This is not a problem that the British monarchy has faced in modern times. It is, in certain dynastic respects, a problem that medieval kings solved with a dungeon. William, who is by temperament a serious and thoughtful man, will need to solve it rather differently.

The Accession: What Actually Happens

On the morning of November 14th, Charles’s seventy-eighth birthday, the Abdication Act will come into force. In constitutional law, sovereignty transfers instantaneously. William becomes King at the stroke of midnight, or at whatever moment the legislation specifies, and Charles becomes, legally speaking, a private citizen.

Let us image what would happen. I will write as if this is actually happening. Let me be clear, it is not, and it will not. But if it did, the scenario presented is not a simple getting on with the business of ruling the Crown.

By the time Buckingham Palace issued its formal statement at eleven o’clock this morning, a crisp, three-paragraph declaration notable as much for what it omitted as for what it said, the story had already been ricocheting around Fleet Street for forty minutes. A source close to the King’s household, speaking carefully and without attribution, had placed a single call. The call was received. And then the world, as it does, went quite mad.

The statement read, in part: His Majesty has decided, after considerable reflection and consultation with those closest to him, that the time has come to ensure the continuity of the institution he has served his entire life. On the occasion of His Majesty’s seventy-eighth birthday, the fourteenth of November, he will formally relinquish the Crown to His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales.

No one in living memory has read a sentence like that from a sitting British monarch. You would have to go back to December of 1936, to a handwritten document signed aboard the Royal Yacht, to find its nearest cousin. And even then, the circumstances were so politically and personally operatic that comparison feels almost frivolous.

This is different. And it is worth sitting with exactly how different it is.

Every journalist reaching for historical context this morning will reach for the Duke of Windsor. They cannot help it. Abdication is, for the British press, a word so rarely deployed that it carries almost totemic weight — the last resort, the ultimate scandal, the thing one simply does not do.

But the Edward VIII comparison, while irresistible, is instructive primarily in its failure.

Edward abdicated in crisis, under duress, for a woman his government and his Church found unacceptable. He was forty-two years old. He had reigned for 325 days. He signed that instrument and disappeared, first to France, then to the margins of history, bitter, purposeless, and estranged from a family that found his very existence an inconvenience.

Charles III is seventy-seven. He has reigned for four years. He came to the throne after decades of preparation so exhaustive, so publicly documented, so tinged with the tragicomic quality of a man perpetually waiting in the anteroom of history, that his coronation in May of 2023 felt less like a beginning than a completion. He had time. He had ideas. He had a vision.
