Rock Clock

Sean McFarland, Published by Deep Time Press

Deep Time Press is pleased to announce the San Francisco launch of Rock Clock, a limited-edition, entirely handmade book and poster project by artist Sean McFarland. In Rock Clock, McFarland circumambulates a giant fractured boulder to tell a different story of time—one that traces the deep geologic history of the landscape.

To activate the boulder as a clock, McFarland walked its perimeter in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, making photographs at thirteen intervals. Following its initial spring debut in Los Angeles, Rock Clock will have its local presentation at the San Francisco Art Book Fair (July 23–26) at Deep Time Press Booth #C08, 1275 Minnesota Street.

The publication is an exquisite, tactile object hand-bound and assembled by the artist. Housed in a Stonehenge paper slipcase, the 9x12 inch book features a Rives BFK Grey cover, blind-debossed on a historic Vandercook SP-15 press by Leah Koransky while an artist-in-residence at Kala Institute in Berkeley, CA. Sean McFarland will be at the booth for an in-person signing on Saturday, July 25, at 2:00 PM, which will also mark the release of the deluxe edition featuring a framed gelatin silver print.

Holy Dirt

Holy Dirt by Santino “Tino” Gonzales is an album about remembering and preservation. Through loop-based guitars, fractured synthesizers, & handmade field recordings, Tino soundtracks a subterranean road trip where memories and melodies blur with the sounds of home.

Following its initial spring debut in Los Angeles, Holy Dirt will have its local presentation at the San Francisco Art Book Fair (July 23–26) at Deep Time Press Booth #C08, 1275 Minnesota Street. We’ll have a listening station set up and LPs for sale!

The San Francisco launch will feature a free listening party of the entire album on Sunday, July 26 from 4–5 pm as part of the SFABF 2026 programming, curated by David Senior, Library Director at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).

Wildlife of the Nevada Bombing Ranges #1 is an introduction to the diverse biological communities inhabiting naval bombing ranges within the remote and sparsely populated deserts of Central and Eastern Nevada. The work invites broader reflection on the resilience of ecosystems subjected to anthropogenic disturbance and the species that live in and around these conflict-modified environments.

Lisa Elmaleh in the National Gallery of Art Library Collection

Lisa Elmaleh’s ongoing project Promised Land / Tierra Prometida explores migration, identity, and the environment in a time of deep political division. Our zine with Lisa was recently acquired by the National Gallery of Art Library in Washington, D.C. and is part of the online exhibition “USA to Zine.” Lisa was a 2024 Guggenheim Fellow in Photography.

Madeline Cass Acquisitions & Museum Exhibition

an index of botanical desires, published by our friend Madeline Cass, is nearly sold out but a few copies remain! The beautiful handmade photo book has been added to institutional collections including: The Getty, Cornell University Library, Rijksmuseum Research Library, Tate Library, Cleveland Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art Library.

Madeline also has a solo museum exhibition of ‘how lonely, to be a marsh’ which will open at the Great Plains Museum in January 2027.

Aspen Mays Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

Santino Gonzales in Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros

“Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros” is a group exhibition exploring adobe as a living practice linking art, architecture, and ancestral knowledge across the Americas at Harwood Museum of Art (Taos, NM) and Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center (Fort Garland, CO). If you’re in the area, you can pick up a copy of Tino’s album Holy Dirt in the Harwood shop.

The exhibition features works by Gabriel Chaile, rafa esparza, Santino Gonzales, Joanna Keane Lopez, Ronald Rael, Christine Howard Sandoval, Carole Crews, Deborah Lujan, Daniel Barela, Harry Chavez, Johnny A. Listening To ⤳

We recently made the move to cancel our corporate music subscriptions, and have been listening to lots of college, public, and listener-supported radio stations. In college we had a radio show on WSPN 91.1 (Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York) and love to support independent radio when we can. Some of our rec’s include:

• NTS is a global radio platform broadcasting music from over 50 cities around the globe, live 24/7.

• KCRW is a listener-supported NPR affiliate out of LA, with a huge range of hand picked and DJ-created playlists available online and as live broadcasts. In addition to their classic music shows like Morning Becomes Eclectic and Eclectic 24, we’ve been listening to the excellent Henry Rollins show for “a mix of all kinds, from all over and all time.”

• KALX is our hometown college radio station out of UC Berkeley.

Beloved Book Fairs

In 2025 we participated in our first Printed Matter Art Book Fair, which we have a special place in our hearts for.

So when we recently split a table at Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair in May with our friends at Conveyor Editions, we were beyond thrilled. The fair took place on the Art Center College of Design campus in Pasadena, spread out across several buildings over four days in May.

Then in July, we had a table at our hometown fair — the one and only San Francisco Art Book Fair, put on by the Minnesota St. Project Foundation.

Looking forward, we’ll be participating in the inaugural San Francisco Photo Book Fair from October 18-19. Find more details here.

Memory of Water

Justin James King & Leah Koransky, Published by Conveyor Editions

Memory of Water, a new book by Justin James King and Leah Koransky, uses desert holly as a lens to explore the resilience of life in arid landscapes. Blending photographs and handmade ochre pigment washes with botanical and geological still lifes, the work forms a vivid field study of this singular species. The plant’s presence in a once-submerged terrain is both a testament to nature’s adaptability and a poetic meditation on the land’s memory of water.

Memory of Water includes a risograph-printed insert with botanical illustrations and information printed in metallic gold, echoing the luster of the desert holly plant and ephemerality of the landscape in which it thrives.

Glimmer

Leah Koransky

Glimmer is Leah Koransky’s first photobook, presenting images made between 2020 and 2025. The title carries two meanings: the first, a shimmering quality of light; the second, in the realm of mental health, a fleeting moment that sparks joy or a sense of safety—the opposite of a trigger.

Amid destabilizing times, the act of noticing quiet beauty can affirm our presence and offer a sense of refuge. In Glimmer, light and shadow take center stage, becoming steady, reassuring characters within an otherwise open-ended narrative.

Justin James King & Leah Koransky

Aggregate is a collaborative risograph work assembling discrete fragments and particulate elements, reflecting the unique land formations and ecology of Searles Valley, California.

Printed with gold ink on predominantly black paper, the work investigates the stark contrasts shaped by the desert’s intense sunlight, with a focus on plants and land formations that have evolved within the basin of an extinct prehistoric lake.

Printed and sewn by the artists at Conveyor Studio in a limited edition of 50 copies.

Book Fairs

2024 presented us with the opportunity to have a table again at the SF Art Book Fair. We love this fair – it’s our second time doing it.

If you didn’t get a chance to see us at the fair, here’s a clip of our table.

Shout out to Lena Gustafson of Night Diver Press, our neighbor at the fair, who took the photo of us above. We love what Night Diver is doing and picked up a copy of their sweet magazine Practice which features some our favorite artists.

📣 Announcing the launch of a new poster series! 📣

With this series, we focus on artists from different parts of the country who work in expanded landscape photography. Posters by Aspen Mays (California), Meg Roussos (Washington state), and Madeline Cass (Nebraska) were launched at the book fair and are now available on our site.

The posters were printed by our good friends at Conveyor, who we can’t recommend enough for all things printed.

Web 01 comes from Aspen Mays's 2024 series Webs, Windows and Templates, an intertwined series of photograms exploring the artist’s ongoing fascination with the tools involved in rendering space. This limited edition poster is based on a gelatin silver photogram using tape, a visual language that derives from Mays’s collection of images of taping building windows in preparation for storms and other disasters. The color is from fabric dye, a palette inspired by sky blues.

Meg Roussos

Tread, 6 is part of a larger series of photographs Meg Roussos created along footpaths in Juneau, Alaska. While working for a trail maintenance non-profit there, Roussos walked and tended the trails daily. Printed duotone for extra rich monochromatic tonal variation.

Madeline Cass

ravenously, gone, still began with a found image which was then printed on canvas and hand-painted with acrylics and watercolors. It is influenced by Cass’s interest in wildfires and the prescribed burns used to control them. Through interacting with the natural environment in unexpected ways and inviting others to join, she offers alternative pathways into our collective ecological awareness.

Lisa Elmaleh awarded 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship

We’re so happy for Lisa Emaleh who was awarded a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship for her powerful body of work, Promised Land / Tierra Prometida.

Aspen Mays publishes Tengallon Sunflower with Dais Books

Tengallon Sunflower brings together three interconnected series of photograms, all made without the use of a camera.

New sounds from Santino Gonzales

On his most recent tape, Bus Stop Rituals, Tino uses loops and field recordings to create soundscapes inspired by times past. Leah Koransky selected as 2024 Headlands Graduate Fellow

Headlands Center for the Arts, located just north of San Francisco, awards a yearly fellowship to one graduating student from each MFA program in the Bay Area. This year, from August 2024 through July 2025, DTP Co-Founder Leah Koransky is the San Francisco State University fellow. An artist pop-up will be held on August 18 at Headlands. Also, save the date for the fall Headlands open house on Sunday, October 27.

Trip highlight: Sierra Nevada Field Campus

In early July, DTP Co-Founder Leah Koransky co-taught a class at San Francisco State University’s Sierra Nevada Field Campus with her grad school professor Susan Belau. The Mobile Studio: Creative Research in the Outdoors focused on making art in response to the landscape of the central Sierra Nevada ecosystem. We completely fell in love with this magnificent landscape and the people studying, teaching, and learning here — and we can’t wait to go back next year.

Book fairs, acquisitions, new projects and such

Book Fairs

2023 was a big year for us. We did our first two book fairs! They were overwhelming and joyful, to say the least. Since we started the press during the 2020 lockdown, it was great to finally meet so many new folks in person and build community.

At the SF Art Book Fair, we had three of our publications acquired by the UC Berkeley Bancroft library: Variations on a Beam by Santino Gonzales, Promised Land | Tierra Prometida by Lisa Elmaleh, and Giants Cave by Justin James King. Thank you to Amelia Grounds, Acquisitions and Curatorial Support Coordinator at the Bancroft, for her support.

We met a lot of great people at the SFMOMA Small Press Book Bazaar in December, where Variations on a Beam and what has become of the lost pleiad? were acquired for the SFMOMA library.

We’re crossing our fingers that we get to do both fairs again in 2024.

New Releases

Leah Koransky’s Trona Pinnacles zine is now up on our website. This 32 page saddle-stitched newsprint zine features a series of photographs of tufa towers during the last 14 minutes of daylight one November evening. Previously only available at book fairs, it’s now in it’s second printing.

News from artists in the Deep Time Press roster

Noah Doely and his collaborator Michelle Maguire were awarded the 2023 New York Public Library Picture Collection Fellowship, where they have been working on a new project about things hiding in plain sight. We’re so excited to see what Noah and Michelle make of their year working in this incredible archive of printed matter.

The first printing of Lisa Elmaleh’s Promised Land | Tierra Promtieda has sold out and a second printing is now available on our website.

In October, Lisa was an awardee of the esteemed Creator Labs Photo Fund through Google's Creator Labs and Aperture Foundation for her series documenting migrants along the U.S.–Mexico border with her 8 x 10 camera.

Lisa will be teaching a few wet plate collodion workshops this summer, one of which will be in Utah and co-taught with artist Rashod Taylor.

Sean McFarland is currently exhibiting new work in his solo show “Alluvial Fan, Strange Attractor” at Casemore Gallery in San Francisco through February 24. Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

Working from a self-generated archive comprising tens of thousands of items, McFarland’s practice is a continuous revisiting of site, image, object, and experience. Materials such as silver gelatin prints, cyanotypes, drawings, rocks, desert sage dust, and glass are combined to make photographs, collage, and sculpture. The resulting works are at once a meditation on place, phenomena, how we are present and how we remember. (via casemoregallery.com)

Although McFarland’s collaborative Deep Time Press edition Butterfly is sold out, we look forward to what he makes next.

Santino Gonzales’ latest ambient album, Bus Stop Rituals, is now available for streaming on all major platforms and can be purchased on bandcamp.

It was featured as a 2023 album of the year by the independent music blog Petal Motel. For an immersive experience, Tino recommends listening with headphones and allowing the album to play all the way through.

We have a handful of copies left of Variations on a Beam, Tino’s 2023 book/love letter to ufology. Following up on his recent projects, this spring he’ll be exploring more audio and video, delving deeper into the world of field recording, deep listening, and memory.

tamara suarez porras, whose postcard set what has become of the lost pleiad? is nearly sold out, has a new solo exhibition opening on February 3. The exhibition, parallax errors, will be on view at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. The CIIS website has all the backstory on this new project. Excerpt below:

Between focus and perception, between the real and the interpreted, can live the intimate and the cosmic, the unfindable, the unreachable. How can one connect with a person from whom they are made, but have never seen except for a photograph and the curved script letters of early correspondence? Do they both look at the same moon and stars? (via artsatciis.org)

Fellow Bay Area printers/publishers National Monument Press + Chute Studio have collaborated with tamara to publish a new riso zine as part of their year-long publishing project Dodeca Meters.

Trip highlight: Massacre Rim Wilderness Study Area

Back in August we visited the Massacre Rim Wilderness Study Area and Dark Sky Sanctuary in the northeastern-most part of California along the Nevada border. This place is as remote as it gets: drifting into a canyon that winds through hilly volcanic ranchland, we only saw two other cars on the road during our two-day adventure.

We discovered that Cedarville, the closest town to Massacre Rim, has a few spots to gather information since all of the BLM offices in the area were closed at the time of our visit, and were going to remain closed indefinitely.

The first spot is the new (but full of old things) CalVada museum. The museum includes everything from civil war quilts and medical kits to 10,000 year old Mastadon teeth and French Basque cigarettes from the early 20th century. It’s definitely one of the most surprising local museum collections we’ve ever seen. Their back room is full of BLM maps and brochures to help visitors navigate the surrounding landscape.

Then, there’s Floating Island Books (neither of these places have websites — if you need help finding them just stop by the hardware store in town and ask). Floating Island is run by Michael Sykes, a fascinating bookseller and publisher whose massive archive of photography, poetry, art, and geology books (from a lifetime of collecting) are available to browse and purchase.

Michael was born in New York City, grew up on Cape Cod, and lived in Point Reyes in Northern California for over 20 years. He owned a book store in Point Reyes Station in the 80s and 90s and published works under his imprint, Floating Island Books. After relocating to Cedarville he opened up Floating Island Books, but has since closed his retail location and sells books out of his house and barn in town.

We only got a few hours of true dark sky viewing since there were rolling thunder and lightning storms, but we learned so much about this fascinating area and cannot wait to go back.
