Over the weekend I went to a vintage pop up on the Upper East Side that really encapsulated this style. It was filled with tons of lovely, beautiful, and expensive items. I left empty-handed and a little down trodden. I came close to spending $160 on a beautiful brooch for my boyfriend, which I felt was reasonable, but after searching for it eBay, I found not one but two of the exact brooches being sold for just $20.

I was inspired to do an eBay deep dive of beautiful objects, jewelry, and items that could have been at this pop up, just without the extreme price hike.

Earlier this month, one of my best friends packed up her life in Atlanta and moved to the next neighborhood over from me. I’m having to schedule and reschedule my nights in just to take a break.

1. Did you know Troye Sivan has a fragrance line? A few months ago I ordered a discovery set from Tsue Lange Yor and became obsessed with the scent Sage’s Rose. It’s so much more than a rose scent, and I love the beautiful, understated bottle.

2. HueGah Home has a lot of really beautiful decor pieces at a range of prices. I think lighting, vases, and candlesticks are all good gift options, but I’m personally eyeing this three bowl serving tray. You can fill it with matchbooks, treats, loose change, or stray jewelry.

It’s rows and rows of people selling unique and gorgeous (mostly vintage!) watches, diamonds, sculptures, estate jewelry, and more. I went to one of their shows last winter, and it’s the perfect way to spend your Sunday.

I’ll be there walking around with my boyfriend. We’re thinking tuna melts at S&P before and martinis at the Chelsea Hotel after.

I have successfully endured one whole year of my thirties, and I’m here to write about it.

Growing up, shows like Sex and the City and movies like 13 Going on 30 made your thirties look so incredibly fun and cool. In my twenties, there wasn’t much representation for that though; elder millennials were cringe, and Girls placed emphasis on your early twenties being the most important time in your life, so when it was finally my turn, I wasn’t dreading it, but I also wasn’t thrilled.

What I had was a feeling that there was a party that was ending. I was moving on to a different section of life that I had to embrace despite it not being what I wanted. Like being the only baddie in a small town. That works for some people, but, me, I like being surrounded by hot people. I wasn’t ready to leave my hot twenties.

That’s not what happened though. I stepped through the portal of my thirties and was welcomed with my same peers as before, just a little older, with more developed tastes and interests.

Upon reflecting on the past year, I have to acknowledge all the the ways my life has improved. I moved out of Bushwick into a more appropriate neighborhood for an adult, I got a new job that has me leading a team and taking on leadership and responsibility I’ve craved in my career for a long time, I take vacations that make me feel glamorous and don’t require me to eat ramen for weeks after to compensate for the cost.

With icons like Charli XCX releasing and touring the ultimate party album that somehow also deals with themes of aging and motherhood, and Benito Skinner releasing a love letter to the 2010s college experience, my millennial cohort is back in the cultural conversation in a way we haven’t seen in years.

Meanwhile, Gen Z is known as the lonely generation; they’re not partying anymore, they’re obsessed with clean girl aesthetics, and they’re ruining their lungs with vapes faster than a cigarette ever could. It all has me wondering if my age bracket is the last one having any fun.

At 31, I’m feeling happier, richer, more confident, and cooler than I’ve ever been. My friends are thriving; growing in their careers, getting married, having babies, and embracing their personhood in a fully realized way. At this point in our life, it feels like the reward for having spent our twenties as disasters, grinding at work on little to no money or sleep.

I used to look at older people that claimed they wouldn’t go back to their twenties if you paid them like they were liars. But as someone who felt perpetually 22 for a long time, I now excitedly feel just my age.

Where I’m shopping: A.W. Kaufman

My gf Bri is getting married in a month, and to celebrate, a few of came together for a lingerie shower. I wasn’t completely bought in on the idea at first, call me crazy but the idea of picking out undies for my friends makes me a little uncomfortable.

But, I heard about A.W. Kaufman through TikTok, and figured that was the best place for me to start. It has an unassuming storefront on Orchard that’s sat there for over a hundred years, and I must have walked past it a million times before. In the window, there’s a sign written in Sharpie that reads “Dior Vintage".” Inside, you’re met with wall-to-wall tubs of tiny ornate bras and a curtain of clear plastic garment bags protecting silk slips and robes.

After helping me pick out a peachy pink bra and bloomer set for my friend, the owner, Miriam, looked at me and ask if I was shopping for myself as well. I asked her what she had in mind, and she immediately pulled out a vintage teal, leopard print Oscar de la Renta slip dress peppered with pink tropical flowers, nailing my vibe on the first try.

As I was checking out, Miriam looked at me and noted that I’ll need to come back for a better fitting bra—apparently my CUUP balconette isn’t cutting it.

What I’m coveting: Last week, Bella Hadid was photographed in London wearing the exact shoes I had bought myself for last year’s birthday.

A pair of vintage YSL pumps with strips of various of snakeskin threaded together with a velvet brown ribbon. I bought them from ’s Nou Vintage pop up at Heart & Lous (which recently moved from Soho to the LES), with my friend Emma, and I’m feeling pretty pleased with my present to myself a year later.

What I’m watching: Overcompensating on Prime Video

Created by TikTok skit master and Ride podcast host, Benito Skinner, Overcompensating is the perfect mix of endearing and absurd. Set in an ambiguous world of mini Uggs and statement necklaces, it’s both modern and nostalgic with needle-drops like “Crown on the Ground” and “party4you.”

I’ve already binged it twice.

As a test of strength before attending the festival, you must first visit both JFK and LAX airports. (And as punishment, you must do it again, in reverse, on the way back.)

There’s been a lot of conversation online about the insanity that must take over your body to compel yourself to take out a loan on a ticket (starting at $649 for GA and $1,399 for VIP), to that I say, there are easier ways to admit you don’t have a friend in the industry that can hook you up with free artist passes. The fun began in LA before driving down to the festival. We grabbed dinner at the new Melrose Hill hotspot Bar Etoile and did some dress shopping at Happy Isles for my friend Callie’s upcoming big day. As we walked into our appointment, we passed 2/3 Haim sisters walking out of theirs. A good omen for what was ahead of us.

Our home away from home in Palm Springs was a mid-century oasis. Callie has a knack for tracking down the best Airbnbs with so few reviews, you think it’s fake. They never are, and we’ve never had a bad stay or had to break the bank. There were fresh grapefruit and Meyer lemons on the trees, ready for our taking, and a pool, hot tub, and outdoor fireplace waiting for us every morning and evening.

Other than seeing Kenny and JaNA from Love Island US at the wristband pickup booth, not much of note happened that first night, so let’s just get into the fest….

DAY 1

What I wore: oversized vintage Route 66 denim shorts, Paloma Wool knit halter, tan campus-style boots, silver Balenciaga city bag (a mistake that wrecked my back, but not one I learned from), and vintage Gucci shield shades

Who I saw: Lady Gaga (duhhh), MARINA, Glixen

Celebs I stalked: ??? genuinely I do not remember

Friday started with breakfast tacos and some pool time. My friend Kate reps the band Glixen so we needed to be at the festival grounds nice and early. Day one was the longest and hottest of the fest—we got there at 1:30 PM and left at 1:30 AM, and the temp topped out at 105 degrees.

Due to the heat, we spent a lot of time backstage at the Sanora tent, taking advantage of the shade, air conditioned bathrooms, and occasional free beer. I ate half a slice of Prince St. Pizza that was so foul and not at all like the actual Prince St, and on a whim Callie and I broke off from the group to explore the Absolut Vodka activation (lol). It was filled with people taking photos of themselves with the Paris Hilton-themed room—fabulous people watching and actually decent drinks (we got the Sliving Cosmo). The DJ was a former Bachelor contestant and there were inexplicably decorative shower heads everywhere. I felt alive in the Absolut Vodka activation.

DAY 2

What I wore: Vintage long black Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits dress, floral fringe sarong, Prada Sport belt bag, black cowboy boots, DANNIJO necklace gifted by my friend Sydney that ended up irritating my skin due to excessive sweat from the desert heat. Half-way through the day I wrapped it around my boot which gained me a lot more attention

Who I saw: Charli XCX (and Troye…and Billie…and LORDE), T-Pain, Weezer

Celebs I stalked: Mark Hoppus, Julia Fox, Anya-Taylor Joy, Gabriette, Ariana Maddix, Benito Skinner, Mary-Beth Barone

We awoke on Saturday already missing the night before and immediately turned on the live stream to rewatch Lady Gaga’s performance (something I’ll be doing again this Saturday), before getting ready and heading to the fest. Today, we decided we wanted to get drunk and enjoyed the free drinks Kate snuck out of the agent’s garden for us. After a life-altering experience at T-Pain, we camped out for Charli and had prime standing room right next Lorde’s entrance on stage. After hanging out celeb spotting in the artist compound we headed home to hot tub and Domino’s pizza, a real heavenly duo.

DAY 3

What I wore: Vintage D&G Jeans baseball tee with “Rebel” spelled out in rhinestones, the same denim shorts and Balenciaga bag (sealing my fate) from day 1 and the cowboy boots from day 2

Who I saw: Arca (and ADDISON RAE), Amyl and the Sniffers, Jennie

Celebs I stalked: Cara Delevigne almost plowed down my friends in her SUV. She continued to honk loudly and rudely at everyone on her way out of the fest.

Sunday we were spent and there wasn’t anyone we were dying to see until that night so we decided we’d throw a pool party at our Airbnb. We invited friends and Kate’s coworkers and made margaritas by the pitcher. Then we headed to the fest with just enough time to grab a drink (at the Absolute Vodka activation!!) before we lost our minds over Arcamarine. That night we returned to our hot tub to rest our bones and recover from the tens of thousands of steps we took all weekend.

But we are waiting with baited breath. On Saturday, I went to a “Spring Fling” themed party that just so happened to fall on the warmest day of the year so far. By the time I left for the party, the temperatures had dropped and the rain was coming in. I changed outfits three times to adjust with the weather and still froze my toes off in vintage sandals.

What I’m reading: Feed Me by Emily Sundberg

One parts business news, one part founder stories, and one part New York social scene-reporting, Feed Me is a daily newsletter on Substack that gets an immediate click as soon as it hits my inbox. My bestie Callie gifted me a trial subscription a few months ago, and I was quickly convinced that the $10/month fee was worth it.

Emily has a keen sense of awareness as to what’s about to blow up. She was reporting on Prada converting their downstairs neighbor and Soho icon Lure Fishbar into a store-themed restaurant way before Grubstreet got the scoop. Her rolodex is filled with insiders of every industry, and she has not qualms about shooting them a text to get a quick quote or putting out a call to her subscribers for tips.

What I’m drinking: The Martinez

I was first introduced to the Martinez at Cervos. It’s three distinct ingredients that don’t normally come together on a cocktail menu, but was somehow exactly what I was craving. It was bitter, smokey, with just a touch of sticky sweetness. I had two with my Louisina white prawns.

Later, I learned it’s classically made with gin, and often described as “part Manhattan, part Martini,” which if you know me, you know that’s a lot of me.

Gin can be divisive for some, so I loved that Cervo’s served theirs with Mezcal. Try it both ways and let me know your take. cha

What I’m shopping for: Miu Miu crossbody bags

I have very specific feelings about crossbodies—in that, I don’t like them. But the every rule has an exception, and you can’t deny their utilitarian value. I wouldn’t wear them on a night out, but I have a festival coming up, and I know I’ll be grateful to have the weight of my personal belongings distributed somewhat evenly across my body. So if I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna do it right.

My holiday break bled straight into starting a new job and life got a bit turned upside down. I’m going into an office for the first time in five years, so the adjustment to a mandatory three-day a week setting has been hitting me hard. I’m incredibly exhausted, but actually enjoying it more than I’d expected I would. Happy hours twice a week since I started might be contributing to that.

And because I can’t contain myself, I also threw together a last-minute trip to Atlanta to surprise my best friend for her engagement, complete with surprise engagement party. The event lined up perfectly with Ground Control Touring’s abortion access fundraiser for Noise for Now organized by my other best friend, so it was a weekend full of partying and celebrating my girls. Can’t ask for more.

What I’m putting on my face: It’s winter, so naturally I’m prioritizing being moisturized and glowy and so far, these products are really working for me.

A313 Vitamin A Pommade - A “French pharmacy favorite” or so TikTok has told me a million times. It’s a retinoid that’s gentle enough to be used multiple times throughout the week. I’ve started with two nights a week and am really pleased with my results as long as I use a super rich moisturizer the next day

Merit Great Skin Glow Serum - tbh I can’t say if this one is actively transforming my skin, but I do think it’s contributing to my overall glow goal so I’m keeping with it!

Saie Beauty Slip Tint & Glowy Super Gel - I truly did not like these products at first and was set on returning them until I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and had to do a double take. I’m used to mattifying makeup and when this is first applied it gives more wet than glowy so it really threw me off. Just let the product wear for a minute, and it’ll give the desired result, trust me

What I’m drinking: Someone told me that the Paper Plane is the cocktail of the season, so allow me to put you on. I always gravitate to whiskey-based bevs this time of year, so it fits naturally into my typical repertoire plus it includes my after-dinner drink of choice amaro (no, I don’t actually drink dessert wine).

So, what is a Paper Plane? Equal parts bourbon, Amaro Nonino, Aperol, and lemon juice. Though I’m sure you could play around with different amaros or Campari to tip the scales. Go crazy and swap bourbon for Scotch. Grapefruit for lemon. There are no rules.

It’s bitter, sour, herbal, and bright. Cute, crushable, and I can’t stop ordering them.

What I’m eyeing: I’m loving the snow bunny content coming out of the likes of Aspen and the Sundance Film Fest this season. So imagine my excitement when I saw future voice of a generation Rachel Sennott wearing the most accessible bag on the secondhand market while attending the film fest. A few years ago, I gifted my boyfriend a custom candle pet portrait of our dog Margot by Janie Korn. What I’m reading: My Husband by Maud Ventura

I just started reading this French novel, beautifully translated into English, and have absolutely been devouring it. It follows the daily life and internal monologue of a seemingly fabulous French woman who is utterly obsessed with her husband and even more obsessed with proving her perfection to him.

She’s paranoid and dramatic and convinced that every mindless action is a premeditated slight that indicates her husband’s intent to leave her. Her delusion is driving her mad and is sure to be her undoing. I can’t get enough of it.

What I’m making: Holiday decor

We’re having a Home Ec. Christmas this year. That means a lot of DIY, a lot of paper crafts, and a lot of color. I’m finally putting that stack of construction paper I’ve had lying around to use and will be hot-gluing things for the first time in a very long time.

It started with the desire to make colorful paper chains and stars, and next on my list is drying oranges for garland. I’ll have my traditional Christmas when I go home to see family, but for my little Brooklyn apartment, where I have no room to store nice decorations for 11 months out of the year, we’re tacking holiday cheer with disposable garb.

What I’m watching: I’ve started binging Will and Grace for the first time as not a 9-year-old with access to the remote, and I must say I’m a little shocked by how great it is.

Obviously, it was a cultural phenomenon for a reason, and that reason was NOT that it was particularly progressive (I’m on season 5 and I think I’ve seen two men kiss twice and one of them was Gene Wilder accidentally planting one on Will), but I didn’t realize just how big it was. Halfway through the series, there’s a new A-list star in every episode; Madonna, Cher, Demi Moore, Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Woody Harrelson (by far Grace’s hottest boyfriend), and did I mention Cher? She’s been in like 5 episodes.

I can’t tell if the comedy is risky or a relic of the era, but I do catch myself shocked at some of what they got away with, and I’m certainly giggling every time Karen and Jack are on-screen touching tummies.

I thought I’d seen all the series I dub “for the girls,” so this one was a pleasant surprise, and yeah, I do plan to watch the reboot.

What I’m watching: Anora (2024)

I always say, my number one metric for reviewing a movie is, “did I have fun?” Reader, I can’t sit here and explain to you how much fun this movie is. It’d be embarrassing. Just trust me it’s an absolute delight.

Sean Baker is so skilled at world-building, and in Anora he really brings you into the fantasy of the film. It’s a heartbreaking and delightful Cinderella story, soaked in booze, rolled in glitter, and a little bit trampled on.

This excerpt from Mikey Madison’s conversation with Isabelle Huppert for Interview Magazine has nothing to do with the movie but is very important to include:

What I’m reading: Bunny by Mona Awad

This isn’t my first Awad novel, earlier this year I read All’s Well, her freaky take on a fusion of Shakespeare classics. While entertaining, I found it to be dense and at times a bit of a slog.

Bunny is the complete opposite. It’s light but thrilling, and I can’t put it down. It’s in the tone of Scream Queens or Jennifer’s Body, and I’d kill for Diablo Cody to option it as a mini-series. It’s twisted like The Substance and campy like…Heathers, Jawbreaker, Sugar & Spice, take your pick.

What I’m shopping for: The changing of the seasons signals an onslaught of trend spotters telling you what you absolutely have to have in your closet this fall and winter. I’ve spoken about my feelings on trends before, and, as always, take it or leave it. But the one that’s caught my eye lately, is belted bags.

No, I did not say belt bags. Belted bags. But if you, like me, don’t have $6k to get one from Prada or don’t have the time to hang out on the Osoi waitlist until their next drop, I have a solution for you. Lucky for us, the trend cycle is, that’s right, cyclical, and pretty much anything can be found secondhand. I’ve pulled a selection specifically for us sweeties.

East-west bags are very in right now, so this black Gucci interlocking “g” bag fulfills both trends, but if you’re more into hotdogs than hamburgers, here’s the exact back in an alternate orientation

These Christian Dior bags are a hyper-literal interpretation, complete with pant details available in front and back pocket varieties—I found versions in nylon, canvas, and leather, respectively.

What I’m listening to: Addison Rae

We’re here, we made it. We’re living in such a magnimonious (apparently this isn’t a word) pop renaissance. Not just due to Addison, there are so many pop princesses to credit this era we’re in. But Addison, honey, she’s all of it wrapped into one. She’s our one true triple threat. She’s Britney, Madonna, Kylie.

When I heard Diet Pepsi, I knew. Obviously, we all did. But Aquamarine? For one thing, the video is spellbinding. SPELLBINDING. She cast a curse upon me and my loved ones with that choreo, and now we’re all trapped in her gaze. It’s a bacchanal that will make you want to put on something sexy and smoke a few cigs at a time.

The Arca remix drops on Friday, you’ve been put on notice.

What I’m reading: I’m currently in the midst of what I’m calling Freaky Girl Fall to satisfy my autumnal urge to romanticize the grotesque. This mostly consists of leaving whimsical marginalia in the pages of Geek Love by Katherine Dunn and The Doloriad by Missouri Williams. I’ve heard they’re both renowned for their freak shit. First, though, I have to finish Jenny Hval’s ode to witchcraft and Norwegian Black Metal, Girls Against God. I’ve loved Hval since I read her deliciously sensual Paradise Rot years ago (Paradise Rot hive, rise!).  

But, I admit, I’ve maybe freaked too close to the sun, which is to say, I’ve recently been freaked out myself. Twice in one week — one week — I was reading Girls Against God in public when two different men used it as an excuse to flirt with me. And let me tell you, that is not normal for me! I’m a real “she’s got a great personality” type of girl — not someone random strangers are throwing themselves at. All this to say, I think Jenny put actual magic in this book. Throw it in your tote before you leave the house if you want a date this fall. 

What I’m listening to: Speaking of freaky girls, I’ve had Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet on repeat since it dropped. Ms. Me-Espresso has done so much for the short-and-horny community, of which I’m a proud member. Aside from that, I recently created a special “in my feels” fall playlist Ah, fall! A beautiful time of melancholy daydreams, long baths and college football. Bury me in fall foliage à la the The Roses of Heliogabalus. My playlist is full of Florence, Adele and Kate Bush, natch. 

What I’m watching: Last week, my friend Brooke mentioned that she doesn’t need to go all out for Halloween because she basically lives it every day. Dramatic! But relatable. When horror’s your bread and butter, October tends to lose a bit of its festivity. That said, this is the time when I get to indulge in my passion for horror with other people who may not have my same reverence for the genre the other 11 months of the year. So, please, indulge me. 

I like my horror like I like my men: nice to look at above all else. Whether its Patrick Bateman using Jean Paul Gaultier as a body bag in American Psycho, the perfectly framed interiors of The Shining and psychedelic excess of Japanese art film House, horror’s at its best when it’s as stylish as it is scary. A non-exhaustive list of these films would include the austerity of Audition which strings you out like a taut piano wire, or the ‘80s excess of Hellraiser; the Southern Gothic slow burn of Stoker or the deep reds of Perfect Blue. There’s rose-colored horror like Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Virgin Suicides and Carrie and the elaborate fantasias of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Crimson Peak and Gothic. 

  You’ll find the sleek sex appeal of The Hunger, Don’t Look Now (which includes one of the greatest cinematic sex scenes) or Dead Ringers (all that Italian furniture!) alongside technicolor nightmares like Pearl, The Love Witch and Black Narcissus. Bright, daylight horror like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Ruins and Scream complements moody, monochromatic films like The Ring or A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Then, there’s bubblegum horror like Jennifer’s Body, Jawbreaker or The Loved Ones. There’s the dreamy mind-fucks of Oldboy, Daniel Isn’t Real and Candyman. Or, films that explicitly tackle the fashion industry like cult classic Helter Skelter and The Neon Demon. 

But, of course, my platonic ideal of a film is Dario Argento’s Suspiria. Because of my unfailing joie de vivre, the colorful mise-en-scène, camp and bad dubbing of giallos — or, pulpy Italian murder mysteries — make the subgenre the love of my life. It’s absolutely perfect, and Suspiria, which follows an American studying at a German ballet school run by witches, is THE gialli. If I didn’t have a job, I’d watch it every day, and not in a depressive way. Could a depressed person watch a ballet dancer fall into a room full of barbed wire (you know, like you’d find in any dance academy) every day? I don’t think so. If people were serious about asking me out, they’d invite me to a screening of Suspiria.          

What I’m buying: The beauty of fashion — or shopping in general — is how it opens avenues for us to dream. As I browse, I imagine myself running errands in my best Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy drag before coming home to make carrot cake in some silk pajamas. I want to dine in French bistros in romantic silhouettes and for my closet to reflect my “editor off duty” Pinterest board. And really, okay, let’s just say it: I want to be cool — which just means feeling the most comfortable in my skin I can be.  

J.Crew’s recent ’90s-inspired rebrand is fantasy par excellence, promising rom-com-ready fall days with preppy oxford shirts, silk maxi skirts and brushed cashmere. I’ve dog-eared the pages of the newly relaunched catalog featuring the brand’s iconic Barn Jacket and the Étienne oversized shirt. I just bought two of these shirts — a blue striped poplin and a light blue oxford — and, now that I think about it, I was wearing one of each both times I was hit on. Maybe it wasn’t the book, but the J.Crew? I promise, we will get to the bottom of this.  

On the candy-coated end of the fantasy spectrum, I’m currently deeply entrenched in the sartorial universe of Rachel Antonoff, thanks to my friend Kyle, who works for the brand. The Cupcake sets feel like what you’d wear in an Eloise book or Sofia Coppola film (Life Without Zoe heads sound off, IYKYK), and I’m absolutely enamored with the colorful coffee cup puffer and paisley printed Bruno jean and Barry fringe vest. It’s a need, not a want.      

To bring it back to the Kennedys, I bought a Jackie bag a few years ago and I’ve loved it so much, I’m lusting after a second one in an everyday black, my signature color. I don’t care what Anna Wintour says — black will never not be chic! And, even though I wish I could be one of those esoteric Fragrantica girlies who only wears obscure English perfumes with top notes of blood and black lace, I’m now officially a Le Labo devotee. I got a whiff of Thé Noir 29 off my friend Maggie recently and fell in love. With the scent — not Maggie. Although, if she wanted to shoot her shot, I apparently have a very open disposition at the moment.    

What I’m drinking: The temperature in Atlanta has officially dipped below 80 degrees which means I’m finally free to bound around in espresso-colored tights drinking Old Fashioneds at the Hotel Clermont and Lloyd’s. This, in my opinion, is the only true bliss in life, and the reason for the season. May yours be filled with little luxuries and meet-cutes. Cheers!

A few weeks before packing began I got the below text and was already at the ready with a trip lookbook.

I gotta say, planning out inspiration ultimately made my trip better. Before packing my suitcase, I pulled up my board and spent an hour configuring outfits. Once I landed on pieces I knew I could work with, they ended up in the Yes Pile, and I made a note of how I would wear everything in my phone.

While my mom and sister spent time digging through their overstuffed checked bags, I already knew what I was going to wear the following day.

We started in Portland and worked our way to Bar Harbor, where we saw whales and boats and flowers in full spring bloom in the middle of September. We ate our weight in lobster and popovers and the best biscuits I’ve ever had (if you leave BH without a visit to 2 Cats Cafe, you’ve wasted your trip).

Along the way, we made stops in Wiscasset and Camden, and on my next trip, I’m making it a point to hit Kennebunkport and Mount Desert Island as well.

Lexi Ioannou of bohochicken, Nou, and Real Housewives of New Jersey fame has declared the Hunter Boot as The Fall Shoe (and let’s be honest, this woman knows shoes). A pair of which I managed to squeeze into my carry-on for our whale-watching day. I was picturing us venturing out on a small fisherman’s boat, getting tossed around by a breaching whale ten feet from the bow….that was not the case, but we did catch some fluking tails, and I looked ab fab.

Who is on my mood board: Brooke Puth (née: Sansone)

While I have nothing against her new husband, Charlie Puth, he’s never held even a modicum of my interest until now. From what I gather, Brooke is a pretty normal (albeit wealthy) girl from New Jersey who married her childhood sweetheart (who is a pop star).

Not only is she beautiful, but she has excellent taste. I love how her classic style has that unexpected Loewe twist.

When looking at the elements that make it so good, I first think of her structure and tailoring juxtaposed with billowing fabric paired with insane footwear. Next to note is the emphasis on texture, whether it’s sleek silk, woven cashmere, or sharp embellishments, and how everything appears to serve elongating her silhouette.

Simply put, she’s living my dream life. Practical anonymity backed by star power that no institution of fashion or hospitality would ever deny. Her wedding was captured by Vogue down to the custom Danielle Frankel gown, but she can walk into Erewon without anyone batting an eye.

What I’m reading: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

September also marks the third anniversary of moving to New York and reading this book has been such a special experience. I’ve spent a lot of time in northern Brooklyn, and the familiar street names spark something in me every time they’re mentioned.

I love living somewhere with a rich history, having come from Atlanta, where so little has been preserved (whether that’s for one reason or another). It’s somehow both impossible and totally practical to imagine my burrow in the horse-and-buggy era. I, myself, just moved into an apartment built at the turn of the 20th century, and this book has really helped me conceptualize what that actually means.

My days have been spent plan-free and indoors until a broker emails me that they can show an apartment ASAP, and, other than that, I only emerge at night. Just before the sun sets, when the temperature has already dropped. I feel like I’ve nailed my summer wardrobe by focusing on cute skirts paired with tanks I don’t mind sweating all the way through.

My toes are out this summer in a way the world hasn’t seen in years. I’m running around in precious little heels, strappy sandals, mesh ballet flats, and dare I say even rubber flip-flops. My hair is longer than I’ve maybe ever seen it, but it typically stays twirled up into a claw clip, and there’s only tinted sunscreen and blush touching my skin.

I rode a Citi bike for the first time in my three years in NYC, and I’ve eaten ice cream nearly every night. My dog killed two fat Brooklyn rats, and I can’t really look at her the same way anymore.

Where I’d normally travel this time of year: Since my bestie Kate moved to Los Angeles four years ago, I’ve gone out to visit her once or twice a year, acquiring a pretty solid list of what to eat, drink, and do.

If all of my money wasn’t getting sunk into a new apartment, here’s what I would be doing out on the West Coast:

Where I’d eat: Lolo, Queen St., Found Oyster, Night + Market Song

Where I’d drink: Walt’s, Capri Club, Cafe Triste, El Prado, Melody, outside at Chateau Marmont or The Hollywood Roosevelt

Where I’d shop: MRKT, Shop Silver, Los Feliz Flea, Ratstar, the Mondo Mondo flagship store

Something I’d recommend: Job the Play

A few months ago, my friend Nathan took me to see Job. An off-Broadway, two-person play starring Peter Friedman (you might recognize him as Frank in Succession) and Sydney Lemmon, the description from the site reads:

After being placed on leave following a viral workplace incident, Jane would do anything to return to her Big Tech job. But as the therapist who needs to authorize it, Loyd suspects her work might be doing more harm than good.

We sat front and center in one of the most intimate and thrilling theater experiences I’ve had. I could see the spit flying from their mouths and was able to completely block out the other audience members. The show has now expanded to Broadway, and I recommend seeing it immediately.

What I’ve been doing: Apartment hunting

Truly another level of hell. Over four weeks, I toured 23 apartments and submitted five applications before landing on a spot with two weeks to spare.

My first NYC apartment hunt was a totally different experience. It was still COVID-times so virtual tours were very much a thing. And for anything else, I had a bestie go scope out the place and report back to me in Atlanta. We found a great apartment in our last-choice neighborhood; she went to look at it immediately, we were the first to submit our application, and that was it. No open houses, no bidding wars, no broker fees, and no picky landlords.

This time, not so much. Now, location was our first priority. And the more competitive the neighborhood, the more batshit the apartment hunt.

Things a broker actually said to me:

“You’re probably being denied because you don’t have enough savings. Landlords are used to seeing people with around $60k in the bank.”

“You should have your parents transfer $10k into your bank account for a while.”

“If this were ten years ago, I’d transfer $10k to you myself.”

After mentioning my concern that the stairs between levels to other units in the brownstone we were viewing are just wide open in the apartment: “A childproof plastic gate would be a good idea to keep your dog from running around” (ok what about…noise? privacy?)

Now on the topic of broker fees…I’ve learned they are fairly unavoidable in the summertime and in the neighborhoods we were most interested in. No fee apartments were rare, and typically out of our budget.

I was able to successfully negotiate the fee down to 10% in one instance (however, we ultimately passed on that apartment), and in another I got the broker to knock $700 off by pointing out that this was a single broker transaction so she wouldn’t have to split the fee on the backend with another agent.

If you are able to find a better negotiation tactic, please advise. Although I do plan on getting a good five years out of the one I just paid.

What I’ve been watching: Planet of the Apes

Every summer, I seem to pick a movie franchise to binge. Last summer it was The Fast and the Furious (read about it here), this summer it was all about the apes.

I haven’t delved into the ‘70s version, but I did watch 2001 to 2024. What started as mild horror (I mean, how could you not be terrified of Helena Bonham Carter as a yassified ape), turned into an endearing love and appreciation. And while it is true, I have never seen a more depressing franchise, it is so beautifully done and Ceasar is an incredible cinematic character. You forget you’re actually watching actors with dots all over their faces acting in isolation. This video on how it’s done is really interesting.

Maika Monroe has been the scream queen in residence for years now, but in tandem with the massive success that has been Longlegs (2024), her press tour style has maximized her star potential.

I was first introduced to her sister styling team Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo (Olivia Rodrigo, Dove Cameron, and frequent Nadia Lee Cohen collaborator) by a DLC Vlog from two years ago. Today, they’ve nailed Maika’s sultry, spooky vibe and put her in unexpected colors and textures for a summer premiere that somehow don’t feel out of place.

In the starlet press tour queen-off, I’m not authorized to determine who’s taking it. I’m just enjoying bearing witness to this major fashion moment from two emerging It Girls.

Where I’m eating: A few months ago after attending a friends and family night at one of New York’s sceniest new restaurants (the burger was amazing but everything else…I’m just glad I didn’t have to pay for it), I established a rule that I’m not going to eat anywhere until they’ve been open for a few months.

But I broke that rule for two new restaurants, and I’m glad I did.

The first was Strange Delight, a New Orleans-themed, raw bar in Fort Greene. I walked in for a seat at the bar with a friend, we were sat almost immediately, split a seafood tower and hushpuppies washed down by martinis and they finished us off with bread pudding on the house. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

And the second was Eel Bar, similarly, I walked in and, while we did have to wait, the bartender and staff took care of us the entire time. Eventually got a seat at the bar and was then served banger after banger after banger. I went again last night.

What I’m drinking: If last summer was marked by glasses of natural wine, this one is all about the martini.

A slightly dry, Gin martini with a twist to be exact. Something about it feels so satisfactorily summer. But, I do love a house martini too. Some of these are citrsuy, some are floral, but they’re all fabulous. Here are a few of my favorites:

What I’m obsessing over: Love Island USA, yes, still

If you haven’t been infected by the LIUSA bug by now, I want to know what kind of repellent you’ve got on.

At 9:25 pm on June 11th, my best friend Callie texted me and said, “Already obsessed with USA…8 minutes in,” and from that moment I knew, summer had officially begun.

For the next month and a half, every day but hump day, I was sat. And now that it’s over, I thought maybe I’d move on. But no, the podcast tour is in full swing, the reunion is imminent, and I’m more obsessed with PPG and their men than ever.

There’s something so exciting, fascinating, and fulfilling about witnessing reality tv history in real time. It’s rare that you catch it in the moment. I was a few years too late for Vanderpump Rules season 2 or Love Island UK season 5. But every night the group chat lit up, and we were there for Love Island US season 6.

So there’s my endorsement, if you haven’t watched it yet, go forth. Have the best summer of your life.

My goal for my birthday week was to pack it as full as possible so I couldn’t feel sad about the loss of my twenties, and my plan was executed perfectly. Here’s how it went:

Weekend 1 (aka MDW) - New Orleans with my girlfriends

A long weekend filled with dive bars, shrimp, karaoke, and being silly in the pool. I was able to accomplish some of my favorite things, which are just being in a big (beautiful) house with my friends and exploring a city I’ve not been to before. For the perfect night, get dinner at Sneaky Pickle & Bar Brine and then go across the street to Bud Rips for excellent music, vibes, and tables to play dice at with your girlie whirlies. End the night at the rock pile, IYKYK.

Mid-week - My bday was a Wednesday so I crafted rest days before and after to break up my weekends and the main event. I worked like the grown-up I now am, but everyone was nice to me and asked very little of me which was a welcome change.

That night I gathered a few of my friends to drink wine and celebrate with me at my local wine bar Cherry on Top. It was low-key and perfect. Surrounded by friends I’ve made in the three years since moving to New York and ones that I’ve had for a decade.

Weekend 2 - My parents flew in to celebrate with me, but really it was the perfect opportunity to convince my dad to visit New York for the first time since 2016 when I spent the summer here as an intern.

We went on a boat tour, we saw a Broadway show, we ate incredibly well, and, by the end of the weekend, I was all partied out.

What I’m buying: In the words of Kyle Cooke, summer should be fun. And I’m applying that ethos directly to my summer wardrobe. I want bright colors, fun prints, impractical footwear, and all-over fun.

Along with my typical “fun” searches on The RealReal, like Blumarine and Moschino, I’ve been obsessing over Siedrés lately. So I jumped at the Mango collab as soon as it launched. It’s bright and psychedelic and sexy cute.

My sweet friend Emma gifted me some spending credit to Lisa Says Gah for my bday which meant I could get the Tyler McGillivary Equestrian Tank I’ve been eyeing since its release. If I can’t get my hands on any items from Chloe s/s 2001, this is the next best thing.

Where I’m drinking: If you know me, you know that my favorite thing to do is make myself comfortable at a wine bar and split a bottle with friends. This activity marked my entire summer last year - each Saturday gathering at a different spot (or the same old spot), and embracing the heat with a chilled glass.

There’s a fresh wave of wine bars coming to the city this summer, so in order to get ourselves organized for the imbibing ahead, I’ve crafted a hit list of all my favorite (or future favorite) wine bars in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Because it is my job, I tend to pay very close attention to what brands are up to on social media, and Hailey Beiber’s Rhode Skincare has entered the chat in a big way.

They master the effortless balance of product-centric content, vibey posts, and celebrity endorsement. The thing most brands ignore when building a content strategy is the importance of those vibey posts, because they’re the ones that reward brand affinity and make people want to follow your account.*

The flat lay… the collage… they’re bringing back the OG ig rulebook and making it look hot and innovative. And I’m eating it up! Could this signal the return of Instagram being fun……watch this space……..

Kate and I met in college, but our friendship solidified when I moved to Atlanta and she welcomed me into her world. Today we live on opposite ends of the country but remain in constant communication. In fact, I’m writing this intro from JFK as I’m about to board a flight to New Orleans to celebrate the long weekend with her and a couple of our girls.

What I’m reading

I moved to LA about 2 and a half years ago, and I have been in a battle with the city ever since. As an antidote to my LA Blues, one of my besties, Maggie, gave me this book, Fast Company by Eve Babitz. While it took me this long to actually read it, she was right.

Babitz was an it girl, a party girl, and a genius, in no particular order. Her writing, and in turn Eve, herself was judged critically as unserious, but that’s what I love most about it and her (she’s chock full of my favorite characteristic, whimsy!).

If she was alive today, she would have certainly had a feature in Charli XCX’s, 360.

In addition to her writing, she designed album covers for The Byrds, Linda Ronstadt, and Buffalo Springfield, and more.

What I’m eating

Jones, my new favorite restaurant in LA is not new at all (though it did just reopen after a drunk driver drove through the building). It’s been around since the 1990’s, but with its big leather booths and checkered tables, it feels like it’s been around since long before then. It’s the kind of place it seems  that the aforementioned icon, Eve Babitz would have frequented. It’s dark, it’s swanky, it’s carpeted, they serve late night chicken parm, and martinis, what more could you ask for.

What I’m listening to:

I can’t stop listening to Youbet’s new record, Way to Be.

My goal for this year was to make Dessert Wine an even bigger priority, so it doesn’t feel right to go over two months without a peep, but now I’m back!

Let’s get into it.

Trends I’m contemplating:

Embellished toes

I love bougie nail art as much, if not more, than the next girl, but for whatever reason (Mary-Kate Olsen, Nicole Richie) I never, ever stray from black toenail polish. I’ve noticed a new trend of hyper-embellished toes making its way into my Pinterest algorithm, and there’s something about intentionally drawing attention to your toes that’s so sick and twisted to me.

But I was intrigued enough to get a glossy, Emoji-pink during my most recent pedicure. I hate it, and will be going back to my comfort color. 🖤

Mesh shoes

The public’s primary gripe with ballet flats are that your feet get soooo sweaty in them and that’s gross. Enter: the mesh flat. Conveniently ventilated, and oh, so comfy, I’ve been running around in mine for about a month now and I’m looking forward to adding a few more styles/colors to my rotation. (Also, part of my motivation for getting a bright colored toenail polish is so you could see them under my flats, which I have to admit is quite fun).

Baggy shorts

I know anyone who lived through elementary or middle school with Bermuda shorts might be cringing right now, but as a member of the Thicc Thighs community, I’m rejoicing. They’re cute, they’re comfy, I’m choosing to embrace them.

The Florida Woman Tee

On my trip to Hudson in April, I went to the Nikki Chasin flagship boutique and picked up one of her signature Florida Woman Tees. Thinking it was cute, quirky, and unique given the remoteness of her store and all the different color varieties. I kid you not, four days later Lisa Says Gah announced that they started carrying them. Now I’m seeing influencers and TikTokers post about the shirt, and even going as far as to say it’s the shirt of the summer. So if you see me wearing her, just know I didn’t intentionally buy the summer’s trendiest item, but here we are.

What I’m watching: The Rachel Zoe Project

It’s bananas. Bravo recently added a huge archive of their former series to Peacock, and I’m having the time of my rediscovering an old favorite. Not only is it fascinating to get a glimpse into this corner of the fashion industry, but it also highlights a time period in which I was a teenager discovering my own fashion for the first time. Giant oversized handbags, slouchy beanies that need to be secured with bobby pins, long necklaces, oversized tanks, and faux fur vests. I die.

Of course, there are a slew of well-known designers now, Law Roach, Mimi Cuttrell, Jaime Mizrahi, Mary Phillips, and Danielle Goldberg (who just welcomed her new baby named Mae!) to name a few, but will a celebrity stylist ever again reach celebrity status in their own right as Rachel Zoe (or Brad Goreski by proxy) has done?

What I’m listening to: I have to say, my s/s playlist is pretty inspired. Have a listen for yourself…

Where I’ve been: Hudson, New York

I went to Hudson to celebrate 14 years with my boyfriend and all I wanted was to walk around and do nothing. I’m always making him take time off work for travel to fit my 9-5 M-F schedule, so this time we worked around his schedule and went Sun-Weds which means, the town was sleeepy.

Knowing these are the most common days for businesses to be closed, I had to meticulously plan our meals, but other than that left time open to wander.

We took the train up and went carless which worked out perfectly. When we did need to Uber it was always under $10. Our Airbnb was a far cheaper alternative to the boutique hotels in the area and very centrally located so we were never walking for more than 15 mins to get to where we wanted to go. In our downtime, we watched Titanic (1997) and looked at beautiful old homes. My ideal trip.

the kelly rutherford effect

There was a time when someone heard that Blake Lively doesn’t work with a stylist that fact was met with “oohs” and “ahhs,” whereas now it would be received with “yeah I can tells” and “maybe she should rethink thats.”

In 2007, I certainly didn’t think I’d someday have Lily van der Woodsen on my moodboard, while Serena was far, far away from it. But Kelly Rutherford has become one of the buzziest IYKYK style sources, and it all came about by simply snapping a picture of her daily outfits in her mirrored elevator.

It’s the pureness of its origins that makes her renaissance such a delight; according to a recent interview with Vogue, Kelly was dressing and documenting her style for herself. When she started posting her outfit pics to Instagram a few years ago it was a means to connect with other people. The resulting outcome has been hundreds of thousands of likes, new followers, and a (incredibly good) new campaign for Tommy Hilfiger.

The difference in her approach to style vs. Blake’s is Kelly’s ability to achieve that “effortless” look we all strive for. It’s tailored where it needs to be tailored, oversized where it needs to be oversized, undone, dressed up, played up, reigned in where necessary. If anything, she’s reminded me of the importance of the mirror pic and how it can evolve your style and confidence.

long live physical media

As streaming service accessibility declines, the importance of physical media becomes more and more apparent. Full seasons of shows made for streaming are getting removed from their platforms of origin, and the list of streamers that are kicking users off accounts (and charging us more in the process) is getting longer. Somehow the way my mom feels about liner notes and record sleeves, I now feel about DVD extras and drearily waking up in the middle of the night to the sound of the navigation page playing the same track on a loop.

As the mass market has abandoned physical releases of print, audio, and video, the demand continues to grow, particularly in the secondhand market. DW guest writer, Callie recently invested in a real and true genuine old-fashioned DVD player to binge Mad Men which she’s been sourcing season by season via thrift stores and eBay. I, myself, just picked up two seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer at my local used bookstore for a dollar each to add to my collection.

As someone whose lifeforce depends on rewatching my favorite movies and shows periodically throughout the year, why should I be limited to when Moonstruck is available on Hulu? Is spending fifteen minutes searching across 5 different streamers for what to watch really so convenient?

Recently I was thinking of what to do with my afternoon, and I had the most passive thought that I would finish up work and head over to Blockbuster to pick out something to watch. It was the strangest feeling to remember something I’d done as a kid and then have to be reminded of its extinction. The least I can do is build up my own library.

trends vs. trends

At a recent Tory Burch show, influencers in attendance were asked what trends were out for this year. While most correctly responded by essentially saying if you like something, it will always be cool, another panned the prevailing bow and ballerina-core trends as “done.”

This may be unpopular to admit, but I’m not anti-trend. I think they can be really fun vehicles to connect with fashion and signal to others your cultural awareness, that is, when trends are mixed into your personal style. Otherwise, it can have adverse effects when you’re basing your wardrobe on what is in and what is out.

Heather Hurst aka pigmami made a video on her TikTok explaining that you should be adopting trends as if they are on a sushi conveyor belt; you select the ones that suit you and leave the rest. That’s what keeps our personal styles fresh and interesting. You don’t have to be entirely individualistic in order to have good style, but the goal isn’t to be a fashion-tok drone either.

But here’s my final thing: bows can’t be done. Just like leopard print can’t be in. They are prevalent aspects of fashion that may trend more or less popular during a given period of time, but as long as you’re wearing them in a way that feels true to you, there is no such thing as “in or out.”
