Everything started a couple of months ago when my daughter told me: ’Dad, maybe you should do something for yourself.’

That is how my Substack was born in the middle of February.

I didn’t have a clue how it worked, what the rules are here. But what I knew was I experienced something new in my life, and I always value human connection.

Naturally I started with the same attitude on Substack. At the beginning I was experimenting with what works and what I like to write about. It was a fun process. I quickly notice two things:

One - posting your notes or articles doesn’t mean you will be found by other Substackers, especially at the beginning of your journey. I posted regularly and barely received any engagement, even getting one like on a post was a big deal to me.

Two - when I started to engage with people and properly giving my attention (listening to different opinions, responding to comments, supporting others) was when I got the biggest positive feedback. It made me realise that there are people behind all the statistics and numbers.

I didn’t need more to understand. It became apparent how dedicating time to truly appreciate others and their work was just as valuable as my own Substack, if not more so. I learned more from others which improved the quality of my writing and my Substack.

I hit 1000 subscribers in about 4 months which was a big deal to me. I always thought something like this would take years of work.

It did not take a magic recipe to achieve it.

Only one word is needed to describe success on Substack:

Connection.

And that didn’t just give me more positive statistics. It made me realise the importance of what is behind those numbers. Those 4 months made me understand and grow as a person.

It is deeply satisfying when you start to engage with others and you see how they grow and in the meantime you grow as well.

It’s a mutual respect, because you exchange some of the most valuable assets you have: your time and your attention.

From mid February I spent every single day on Substack; dedicating my time to connecting and writing. But what I found the most exciting everyday was the conversations, the comments, everybody’s opinions. It was like finding a community that didn’t feel forced, definitely not perfect, but still so amazing.

This is what gives me energy when I get connected to people from all around the world, with their different stories, experiences and perspectives of life.

When I first met Riza I immediately thought we had the same sort of energy.

It is quite hard to explain but it felt nice to see someone that had a similar Substack journey to mine. I knew he would grow very fast and I was right.

Our stories are pure examples that from different angles, perspectives, and countries there is still one common thing that connects us here: human socialisation.

You grow, I will grow as well. We support each other. This is the beauty of Substack. Don’t treat it as a competition, treat it as your space when we all build community that allows us to grow.

Yes, it requires effort, yes it requires dedication and even some sacrifice but at least I found space where I can build something amazing so you can as well.

Don’t rely on algorithms, don’t wait for something magical to happen or for one viral note or article. Start to rely on yourself, sit down and reach out to people and you’ll see how “magic” works which is exchanging energy and human relationships between you and others.

Arek has a deep understanding.

But the modern internet has taught us to reject it. Social media specifically..

We are conditioned to see our audience as traffic.

We are used to looking at numbers on a screen.

We forgot that every digit represents a human.

A human with a heartbeat, a mortgage, loans, feelings, and a fragile attention span.

But what happens when someone comes from the peak of that toxic internet culture?

What happens when a creator who beat the numbers game decides to burn it all down and start over?

Before Substack, Riza held the keys to a massive kingdom.

An Instagram account with over 117,000 followers.

To a creator stuck under 500 subscribers, 117,000 followers looks like the ultimate dream.

But for Riza, it was a suffocating nightmare of algorithms and surface level metrics…

He walked away from all of it.

He told absolutely no one. Came to Substack with zero subscribers.

Writing

I knew absolutely nothing about Substack.

I think my first encounter with it was through DAN KOE. He dropped a link in an email. I opened it, and liked the minimal design!

I checked the address bar and saw the name Substack.

I was not even a consumer here. I read the things I liked straight in my email inbox.

I recently wrote an article titled “Growing on Substack is pure luck.”

I was obviously being sarcastic. Mocking the idea that you just sit on your hands and wait for a magic algorithm.

But what was the reality behind my own growth?

The reality is I abandoned a 117K follower Instagram page because the numbers game kills your soul. You can make good money, yes. But at what cost?

Under terrible conditions, after months of uncertainty, my path led back here.

This time I came to build a different path.

This was a huge test for me under that circumstances…

Even though I desperately wanted to grow over night, I did not force my growth.

I did not hack anything. My method is actually very simple.

I work 2 to 4 hours a day on whatever leverage project I define for myself. That is it.

Sometimes I need to work more, but it’s not always.

No stress. No insane refreshing of the stats page. No panic attacks because my posts went unseen for a few days!

But what exactly happens in those few hours of focus? What was the secret to hitting 516 loyal subscribers in less than 2 months, and reaching nearly 1600 right now?

The answer goes back to exactly what Arek said: Connection.

I do not mean fake networking.

Dropping a cliche comment just to get a follow back.. Nah.. don’t even think about that kind of things in Substack!

I mean a genuine, almost irrational love and attention for the audience.

Let me be completely transparent with you.

I want my readers to grow even more than I do!

Why? Because this is a two way street.

When you help someone untangle their knots with everything you have, that person trusts you.

You are no longer just a profile picture. You are a friend and a guide!

They get closer to you.

They restack you naturally and organically.

They introduce you to their audience.

This is how their growth directly and indirectly drives my growth..!

Put yourself in your reader’s shoes for a second.

What do you actually want?

When someone talks about growing on Substack or building a one-person business.

Do you just want them to say pretty words, show a cool screenshot, and take your money?

Or do you want someone to actually help you, with or without money?

I definitely want the second one.

I do not want my time wasted.

I have zero patience to buy 30 different courses and go through endless trial and error.

I want someone to honestly help me. Even if I bring them zero financial profit at that moment.

Even if I never enter their funnel.

And I want them to show me the way so I can actually execute it. Not just drop a vague tip and leave me in the dark.

Is is too much to ask? Maybe..

But I did exactly that!

I put all my experiences on the table. Without a single filter. Everything that actually worked.

And guess what happened? That was exactly what everyone else wanted too.

People are starving for this level of honesty! They are exhausted from the gurus.

What was the result of treating them like real humans?

In the first 2 or 3 days of announcing my paid tier, before I even wrote a single paid article, over $2000 flowed in..!

How do you think I treat people who trusted me that much?

You can easily guess! ;)

My entire approach is this: Honest work with love.

I tell my audience, if you grow, I grow. If you do not grow, I do not grow!

So I put all my effort into making you grow.

And I want to help you grow in a way that lets you enjoy the journey as a human.

Not to burn out, exhaust your soul, and sacrifice your family for this ridiculous hustle culture the social media gurus push on us…

This is my strategy.

This is my approach.

We are dealing with real humans with feelings. Not numbers that go up and down.

If a real human clicked your article, took the time to read it, and left a comment, that person deserves respect!! Because they gave you their most valuable asset: their attention!

Like my good friend Arek said, do not chase the algorithm!

Learn real, warm connection with humans. This is the most valuable asset that works on Substack. And everywhere else.

Conclusion

Two different people.

A father with a mountain of experiences from a place most people never even dream of, who started writing because his daughter told him to do something for himself.

The other, a psychological strategist who abandoned a 117K follower empire to break free from the surface level numbers game.

They have different working styles.

They have zero physical connection.

But in the end, both engineered the exact same explosive, organic growth.

This is not an accident. It is a pattern!

What I Learned About Fear, Control, and Trusting the Process.

Some of you who follow my journey here know that the last 20 months have been the hardest of my life. I ended a long relationship and found myself looking after my daughter alone. The world I knew collapsed.

That collapse brought immense stress, but today I want to focus on something more specific: the fear of uncertainty, the fear of the unknown. Nearly everyone struggles with this, some for their whole lives. I haven’t beaten it, not even close. But I’ve learned to see it differently, and I want to share how.

For most of my adult life, I was someone who needed control. I planned everything, down to the smallest detail, because it made me feel safe. That safety had a hidden cost: it was really just a way of running from uncertainty.

Occasionally I broke the pattern. Moving from Poland to Ireland ten years ago is the clearest example, a decision full of unanswered questions. But I found my footing there faster than I expected. Twenty months ago, ending my relationship forced me into that same territory, except this time there was no easing in.

Work fell apart at the same time. I’d spent six years in the corporate world, learned a lot, and burned out completely. I knew I didn’t belong there anymore, and I promised myself I wouldn’t go back even if it meant a lower salary or a less prestigious title.

Slowly, I let go of things I couldn’t control. That meant trusting myself, which turned out to be the real challenge. I think that’s the root of most fear of uncertainty: we don’t trust ourselves. Somewhere underneath it all is a quiet voice saying maybe you’re not good enough. I heard that voice constantly.

All of this was happening while I faced serious backlash from my former partner, who was furious. It’s hard to focus on your own growth when you’re fighting battles on multiple fronts. I worked, then quit, then gave myself permission to rest, I was running on empty. But the real shift happened internally. I kept telling myself: I’ll manage, whatever happens.

When you’re in the middle of real hardship, there’s no room left for extra mistakes or improvisation. You have to find your footing, and fast.

So how did I actually learn to manage uncertainty after all these years?

I started executing - step by step, without waiting for clarity I didn’t have. When you’re moving toward something, even without all the answers, momentum carries you. Part of that meant releasing control I didn’t need to hold onto, and letting life unfold on its own terms. I’ve come to believe there’s no such thing as coincidence only signs, only opportunities, which some people read as problems and others read as chances.

Over time, uncharted territory started to feel familiar. Job rejections stopped feeling like verdicts on my worth. They became simply: not this time, not this place.

I realised that my obsession with control had cost me more than it ever protected me. Panic became execution. Doubt became discipline. I’m not claiming to be free of worry, I’m not but I’ve learned that most of what we fear never actually happens. We build it in our heads, and that spiral of imagined catastrophe can do more damage than reality ever could.

The Difference Between Reckless and Ready.

People sometimes hear “stop trying to control everything” and mistake it for recklessness just throw your hands up and hope for the best. That’s not what this was. I still planned. I still worked hard, still applied for jobs, still showed up for my daughter every single day without fail. What changed wasn’t the effort, it was the relationship I had with the outcome.

Control, I realised, was never really about doing the work. I always did the work. Control was about needing to know the ending in advance, needing certainty as proof that I’d be okay before I was allowed to feel okay. That’s an impossible standard. Nobody gets that guarantee, not really, ever. The people who look “certain” from the outside have usually just made peace with not having one.

So the shift wasn’t from effort to passivity. It was from effort plus guarantee to effort plus faith. I still did everything within my control. I just stopped demanding to see the finish line before I started running toward it.

Last week I went on holiday. Rationally, it made no sense, too many unknowns, too much risk. But I trusted that I’d manage. Two weeks earlier, I’d quit my job, despite needing one, on nothing but faith that things would work out.

I landed in Dublin on Thursday evening. By Friday, I had the job I’d been dreaming of.

But honestly, the job isn’t really the point. What matters is how I got there, how I sat with uncertainty long enough to stop fearing it.

Life gives you answers, eventually. But first you have to believe, and you have to be patient. It’s not easy. But it’s possible. I’m living proof.

My daughter is fifteen. She made her decision herself, quietly, firmly, and with more clarity than most adults bring to major life choices. She doesn’t see the point in continuing formal education and wants to learn on her own terms: history, languages, the things that actually pull at her curiosity.

Almost no one around us understands it. I’m still not sure I fully do, and I think the distinction matters more than people realise.

Leaving school isn’t leaving education.

One of the biggest misconceptions about leaving school is that most people assume it means she’ll stop learning altogether. The first thing I had to explain, over and over, is that my daughter isn’t giving up on learning. She’s giving up on a system of learning that no longer makes sense to her. Those are very different things.

Self-directed education has a long history - longer, in some ways, than the standardised classroom model itself. Private tutoring and independent scholarship were once the norm rather than the exception. Today’s unschooling and self-directed learning movements are a modern continuation of that same idea: that education doesn’t have to mean sitting in rows, moving through material at a pace set by someone else, toward a test that measures very little about what you actually understand.

At fifteen, she is old enough to have real opinions about how she learns best. Taking those seriously, rather than dismissing them as teenage impatience, is, I’ve come to believe a form of respect. Not blind agreement.

The hardest part isn’t academic.

If you’d asked me a year ago what worried me most about this path, I would have said the curriculum, how she’d learn what she needs to know, whether she’d fall behind, whether she’d have gaps. In practice, that hasn’t been the hard part.

The hard part is uncertainty. There is no ready-made roadmap for this. No clear sequence of steps toward a diploma, no community of other families doing exactly the same thing nearby. We are, in a very real sense, navigating uncharted waters, figuring out structure, accountability, and progress as we go, rather than inheriting it from an institution.

And then there’s the social pushback, which has honestly been harder than the logistics. People assume this is either a crisis or a phase. Relatives ask pointed questions at dinner. Well-meaning friends offer unsolicited “just wait until university” warnings. Almost no one asks her what she thinks, they ask me, as though she isn’t the one who made the decision. That disconnect - being trusted with a decision but not trusted with the reasoning behind it is something I think doesn’t get talked about enough in these conversations.

The uncomfortable truth behind her decision - no one really wants to see it.

My daughter has four or five friends, other teen girls. All of them are smart, all get good grades, and all plan to continue on to college.

But here’s the interesting part: when they talk to my daughter, they admit the real reason isn’t ambition, it’s their parents’ expectations, peer pressure, and the quiet but very real fear of being seen as a failure if they step off the conventional path.

All of them dream about doing completely different things. It’s a strange feeling, because you can clearly see they want to follow their own ideas, but they squeeze their dreams down inside and, without any happiness, accept the typical path instead.

I’ve discussed this with my daughter many times, and we agree that the biggest challenge for these teenagers is the lack of support from at least one parent at home. It’s almost impossible for a young person to convince their parents to let them choose a different path, that’s the brutal reality.

I’m not saying all kids should suddenly leave school. What I’m saying is that maybe giving them more space to decide is a good idea. As parents, we “kill” their dreams at an early stage and subconsciously push them into an endless cycle of rushing through a path that society created and has come to accept as the only one. But is it really the only one?

Every one of these girls has shown real interests, real dreams. They’re just too afraid to chase them fully.

Knowing When to Step Back and Give Her Space to Figure It Out Herself.

Some time ago, I encouraged my daughter to learn German. We lived in Poland, just 6 km from the German border, and visited it from time to time. I fully understand the importance of knowing different languages.

After some time in Ireland, I started explaining to my daughter how good it would be to learn German. To be fair, she was reluctant. She got my logic, my points, she started learning it but there was no magic spark in her eyes, the kind you’d want to see. I decided to step back and give her space and time. She kept learning anyway. Last year was a watershed moment: she found real joy in improving it. She started watching movies in German, immersing herself more and more deeply in understanding the language’s history and culture. That was exactly the moment I’d been waiting for. I had to be patient.

To date, she’s native in Polish, even better in English (some would just call it fluent, and that’s fine), and she speaks German really well. We discussed this about two weeks ago, she now fully sees the abundance of opportunities that come with knowing more languages. As someone once said, the borders of your thinking are the borders of the languages you speak.

Now, an idea is slowly forming in her head: sooner or later, she wants to lean into something more challenging, like Japanese, Mandarin, or Arabic. The more languages she knows, the better she’ll understand different cultures, people, beliefs and the bigger picture of the world.

It’s the same with history. She’s reached the conclusion that history offers an enormous amount of insight into so many parts of life, why things happen, why certain patterns repeat themselves.

I’m proud of her. Step by step, she’s discovered something important on her own, and she’s able to change her mind when it’s the strategic thing to do.

My Role Has Changed More Than Hers.

The strangest part of this whole process has been realising that I’m the one adjusting more than she is. She seems, if anything, more certain of this decision than I am. My job used to be straightforward: make sure she went to school, make sure the school did its job. Now my job is murkier and, frankly, more demanding, helping her build a path rather than simply follow one, and trusting her judgment even when I can’t see three steps ahead.

Supporting a conventional decision takes very little courage. Supporting one that almost no one around you understands takes a different kind quieter, more sustained, and without the reassurance of a well-worn path to point to when people ask “but how will this work?”

I don’t have a tidy answer to that question yet. What I have is a daughter who knows what she wants to learn and why, and a willingness to figure the rest out alongside her.

During this whole process, she’s also learned one of the most important skills: living with uncertainty. Navigating it doesn’t have to be hard, you just need to trust yourself, and the right time will come to figure it out. The only problem is that our society is built to “control” everything, and there’s no patience left for that kind of trust.

I always repeat one sentence to her: do the opposite of what 95% of people do, and you’ll be fine.

Is there a feeling of being in a relationship yet slowly emptying out inside?

I didn’t understand it for years. I saw some of the patterns, not all but that gap in knowledge cost me dearly.

When I finally named it, everything shifted. What had felt unbearable, unrecognisable, illogical, suddenly had structure. And structure let me see clearly what was actually going on.

Years spent around people with narcissistic traits make you numb. You start operating on autopilot. You miss obvious signs because you were conditioned not to see them. But then something shifts like peeling back another layer of an onion. The deeper you go, the clearer the picture becomes.

That was my turning point. The real prize wasn’t just understanding, it was getting my energy, my calm, my peace back.

To get there, I had to learn exactly who I was dealing with, and how these people operate. So today, I want to walk through some of the patterns that helped me see clearly.

If you recognise these patterns in your relationship, treat them as red flags and observe carefully. Because once you’re able to name them, you can save your energy. You can save your life.

Love Bombing: The Beginning That Feels Too Good to Question.

It shows up early often at the very start of a relationship, before it can even really be called one. Suddenly you feel like the only person in the room. Full attention, constant warmth, love pouring in fast.

And let’s be honest at this stage, there’s a fog. Without knowledge, without the ability to step back and see the bigger picture, it’s easy to mistake intensity for intimacy. You don’t feel any danger. That’s the point. The overwhelming affection is what creates the fast attachment and it’s exactly how the trap gets set.

What makes love bombing so effective is timing. It rarely feels like “too much” in the moment, because it arrives exactly when you’re most open, a new connection, a lonely stretch, a moment you’re hoping to be seen. In hindsight, the speed itself is often the biggest clue. Real intimacy is usually built slowly, tested through small moments of trust. Love bombing skips that process entirely because the goal was never to build trust. It was to secure attachment before you’d had the chance to evaluate anything.

Now, with the knowledge I have today, everything is clear to me. But years ago, I didn’t see it that way at all. At the time, I was only a couple of months past a traumatic event, my father had passed away. When you meet someone in that state and suddenly you’re met with commitment, endless phone calls, constant attention, you tell yourself it’s care. You can’t think the opposite, because you don’t carry the knowledge that would let you question it. You feel like “love” is surrounding you from every direction, and you don’t see the warning signs written plainly on the wall.

You should be especially careful if you’re coming out of a difficult experience and you fall into the arms of someone who uses love bombing on you. In that state, it’s almost impossible to resist which is exactly why the trap works so well. Vulnerability isn’t a character flaw; it’s simply an open door, and people who rely on this tactic know precisely how to walk through it. That’s what makes grief, loss, or any period of emotional depletion such fertile ground for this pattern. You’re not looking for red flags, you’re looking for relief. And love bombing is designed to look exactly like relief, right up until it isn’t.

Lack of Empathy: The Slow Erosion of Self-Worth.

Lack of empathy usually surfaces at a later stage of the relationship. At the beginning, it’s a thin line barely visible. But we have to remember: people with narcissistic traits care mainly about themselves. Whatever effort you put in, whatever you deliver at the end of the day, there’s always something wrong. They always find something to complain about, and they always find a way to shift the narrative and place the blame on you. Slowly but steadily, this diminishes your self-worth.

But these people don’t come out with the biggest guns at the beginning. They don’t want to scare you off. Instead, they slowly test how far they can push, how much they can move the line. The ultimate goal is always the same: control, and turning you into their source of supply. They are perfect predators, stealing your energy step by step, little by little.

Needless to say, empathy is a completely unknown word to them. They don’t care about you or, to put it more precisely, they offer you breadcrumbs, just enough to test how far they can go without losing your investment. After enough time, you become so used to those breadcrumbs that you start mistaking them for something real.

I mentioned in a previous piece about the Dark Triad that I once asked my partner, for years, to learn how to drive something that would have taken a real burden off my shoulders. It played out the same way every single time: silence in response to my request, or dismissal of the reasons I gave for why it was a genuine problem, a problem I always ended up solving myself, one way or another. People like this don’t care what others feel. They operate brilliantly, without any real remorse, and they’re skilled at using your vulnerabilities against you. The driving lesson was never really about driving, it was one small example of a much larger pattern: needs voiced, needs ignored, and the gap quietly filled by you, over and over, until filling it becomes your unspoken job.

What’s easy to miss is how this erosion recalibrates your baseline. Each time a request goes unanswered, or a complaint replaces acknowledgment, the bar for what feels “normal” drops a little. You stop expecting to be met halfway, and start feeling grateful just to be tolerated. That recalibration is the real damage not any single moment of neglect, but the years of quiet adjustment that make one-sidedness feel unremarkable. Naming the pattern is often the first thing that resets the baseline back to where it should have been all along.

Gaslighting: The Systematic Erosion of Trust in Your Own Mind.

Gaslighting is one of the deadliest weapons these people use. Without the knowledge to name it, you can stay for years in a deeply toxic relationship simply because you don’t understand why it’s being played this way. None of it makes sense, you feel like you’re the irritating one, repeating yourself, endlessly trying to explain, while getting no real reaction from the other side.

They are masters of denying what they’ve said. They flip sentences, twist the rhetoric, and reframe the conversation until you’re arguing about something entirely different from where you started. Suddenly you realise that something you clearly remember them saying is now something that “never happened.” Or, if they can’t quite deny it, they call you too sensitive instead making you doubt your own memory, your own reaction, your own read of the situation. They do everything to flip the script.

This shows up in smaller ways too. Whatever idea you bring, they almost always find something to pick apart. They’ll tell you the idea itself isn’t bad, but…and that “but” is crucial. It’s never a full rejection, just enough doubt planted that you start questioning it yourself. If you’re not determined enough, it’s easy to abandon the idea altogether. And even if you push forward, you lose confidence along the way, second-guessing yourself mid-process which makes the whole thing more fragile and far more likely to collapse.

One of the biggest problems here is the contradiction at the center of it. On one hand, they deny, they water you down, they undercut your confidence. On the other hand, they never take responsibility for any action themselves. They critique, but they don’t build. They doubt, but they don’t offer. It’s what hurts the most after years, hearing that you’re somehow responsible for everything, that they wanted to do things differently but you wouldn’t let them. It’s the same playbook, played over and over. They cast themselves as the constant victim, no matter what actually happened.

What makes this especially disorienting is that gaslighting doesn’t attack the idea, it attacks your relationship to your own judgment. Over time you stop trusting your first instinct, because your first instinct has been “corrected” so many times. You start pre-doubting yourself before they even weigh in, running your own thoughts through an imagined filter of their objections. That’s the real damage: not that they disagreed with you, but that you slowly outsourced your confidence to them. And the victim narrative is the final piece that locks it in place because if they’re always the one who’s suffered, you can never quite justify holding them accountable for what you’ve lost.

Over time, you sense that something is wrong but you stay stuck in the ongoing game anyway. It’s a costly game, because its purpose is control, and its fuel is you: an endless source of energy they extract, piece by piece. In the long term, gaslighting produces a slow erosion of your mental strength and self-worth. You reach a point of complete exhaustion not the kind that a good night’s sleep fixes, but a deeper depletion that sits in both body and mind. That’s what makes it so dangerous: it doesn’t announce itself as abuse. It arrives disguised as confusion, as self-doubt, as “maybe I am too sensitive” and by the time you recognise it for what it is, you’ve already spent years running on empty, wondering why you felt so tired for reasons you couldn’t quite name.

The Two Faces: Performing for the Outside World.

People with these traits often behave completely differently at home than they do outside. It touches almost every aspect of life how they dress at home versus in public, how they treat themselves and their appearance depending on who’s watching, how they carry themselves around family versus strangers. They’re masters at wearing masks and switching between them, because for them, it’s always about what others think.

They’re terrified of losing the image they’ve built, the good mother, the devoted father, the perfect parent. Outside, that image is polished and performed flawlessly. But the reality behind closed doors tells an entirely different story.

The Real Turning Point.

None of this is about diagnosing anyone, narcissistic traits exist on a spectrum, and only a licensed professional can make an actual clinical diagnosis. This is about pattern recognition: giving language to something that, for years, felt like fog.

Because once you can name it, you stop blaming yourself for not seeing it sooner. The confusion turns into clarity. The clarity turns into distance. And the distance is where you finally get your energy back.

Growing Up Free, Growing Up Planned.

Someone knocked on the door. A couple of minutes later, we were hanging out with the other lads, playing football. There was no mall, no place to just walk into and pass the time. We were outside most days after school, especially during summer holidays. Those lucky enough to go with their parents to the Baltic Sea or the mountains had something extra special.

I spent my childhood partly at my grandparents’ place, endless chickens, cows, and my grandfather’s big brown horse. Nobody cared what you wore or how dirty you got by the end of the day. What mattered was what we did in that moment a pure, childish world. No judgment, just acceptance of what it was: poor, as the 70s and 80s were, at the peak of scarcity, just before General Jaruzelski’s martial law.

Now, a phone buzzes. An SMS arrives, an announcement that someone’s “ready to hang out.” It means we’re going to the nearby mall.

Spontaneity is dead in the water. Almost everything is planned now. Let me be more specific: distraction is planned, anxiety is planned, and endless comparison to peers is a constant. And beneath all of it lies one of the biggest problems facing young people today, a lack of purpose.

Especially among teenagers and young adults, there’s a world where gratitude is barely understood. Phones, new sneakers, comfort all taken for granted. Meanwhile, everyone is looking for shortcuts: how to get rich, how to get famous, as algorithms feed them thousands of daily images of people who look, on the surface, successful.

But beneath those masks lie far bigger problems than we can imagine. Mental health is under enormous pressure. Rates of depression and anxiety are staggering.

Just last year, a boy from my daughter’s school took his own life.

There’s always shock, always drama, in the aftermath. Officially, there’s no shortage of support available but young people often don’t want to seek it. Many parents, meanwhile, are “too busy” to simply sit with their kids and talk.

Our society is a textbook case of anxiety and stress imploding from within quietly, in most cases. It’s a process, not an event.

The first and most important source of help should be parents. But when I talk with my daughter, and she tells me about her peers’ struggles, I’m genuinely shocked. Sometimes it feels like these teenagers are the ones supporting their parents, for one reason or another.

And then there’s the pressure to always appear happy, heavy and relentless. As a society, we’ve unwittingly taught young people that they must always be “fine” or “okay.” They barely know there’s room to not be fine. So they suppress what they feel until it comes out somewhere else, in ways that are far more dangerous and damaging.

The Weight Beneath the Smile.

A lack of purpose, sooner or later, leads to a meaningless life. Apathy, the absence of clear goals, the feeling of not being understood, and the lack of support from parents are all pushing this trend upward.

57% of girls report depression symptoms, compared to 31% of boys. Over 40% of U.S. high school students reported persistent sadness or hopelessness in 2023, a number that remained high through 2025. Recent HRSA data shows diagnosed anxiety rising 61% (from 10.0% to 16.1%) and diagnosed depression rising 45% (from 5.8% to 8.4%).

The picture looks much the same on this side of the Atlantic. Almost one in five European boys aged 15 to 19 suffers from a mental disorder, and more than 16% of girls the same age face the same reality. A 2023 Eurobarometer survey found that nearly one in two people (46%) across the EU had experienced emotional or psychosocial problems, such as depression or anxiety, within the past year.

The bottom line for teens: the most commonly cited figure puts roughly 16–19% of European adolescents (aged 10–19) as affected by a mental disorder, with anxiety and depression accounting for over half of those cases. In other words, somewhere between one in six and one in five teenagers in Europe is affected.

If so many young people are facing these problems at such an early age, the question becomes: how will they handle the real struggles of adult life problems many of them haven’t even encountered yet?

We are surrounded by a generation of young people who are, in many ways, fragile and I’m afraid it’s getting worse. On the surface, they smile. They say they’re “fine.” But spend a little time with them, let them start talking, and a much gloomier picture emerges.

Honestly, this is just the tip of the problem. There’s far more beneath it.

I’ve noticed a pattern in parental behavior: the older children get, the less time parents spend with them. Subconsciously, this pushes teenagers closer to their phones, toward dopamine-driven habits, and toward peer groups they feel they must belong to, because at this age, the fear of isolation, of not belonging, of not being accepted, is enormous.

It’s also worth mentioning a pattern in some families with both a son and a daughter: fathers sometimes gravitate toward spending more time with their sons, assuming often without realising it that the mother will “take care of” the daughter.

I believe our children are, in many ways, a mirror of us as parents. The lack of meaningful time together, the lack of regular conversation these are the starting points that push kids toward anxiety.

Then parents are surprised when problems surface, unable to understand why. We tend to blame everyone except ourselves for the responsibility of raising our kids especially during a period as critical as becoming a teenager or young adult.

Social pressure, the constant performance of “everything is fine,” becomes the next step toward isolation. Outside, teenagers are taught by watching us to say “all good.” Underneath, they’re struggling massively.

The Tip of the Iceberg.

As I mentioned, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s more beneath the surface.

Another major source of stress that many teenagers simply aren’t equipped to handle is academic pressure, grades, constant competitiveness, and the fear of how parents and teachers will react. I’ve talked to my daughter, and she’s mentioned, more than once, that during exam periods many of her peers vomit from anxiety. They face an overwhelming spike in stress, terrified of how their parents will react to low scores.

Academic pressure has intensified over the past couple of decades, as college admissions have grown more competitive and standardised testing has become more central to how students are evaluated. Many students today feel that a single bad grade or test score could derail years of effort, a belief that creates chronic anxiety rather than occasional stress before a big exam. This pressure is often compounded by parental expectations, comparison with peers, and the sense that there’s only one “right path” to success. Over time, it can lead to burnout, sleep deprivation, and a shift in how students view learning itself, no longer something valuable on its own, but simply a means to an end: get the good grade, get into the best school, get the best job.

This is how so many young people lose their curiosity and their will to learn because learning becomes tied entirely to perfectionism, grades, and school performance. In a way, school sucks the curiosity out of most people. It’s genuinely sad to watch.

Pause on that for a second. The people who are supposed to give teenagers support are, in many cases, the people they’re afraid of their own parents. So why are we surprised when our teenagers are so stressed out?

In many ways, school functions as a place of obedience, teaching young people to follow rules rather than question them. Because of social pressure and the world we’ve built around them, the vast majority of teens move on to university without ever questioning why, too afraid of what their parents might say if they didn’t.

Another enormous source of stress is social media, the endless comparison to influencers and peers, along with online harassment.

Social media adds a different, but related, layer of stress. Where academic pressure is about performance, social media is about identity and belonging. People, not just teenagers want to appear perfect, or at least do everything they can to present themselves in the best possible light. Platforms are built around curated self-presentation, so what teens see is rarely an accurate reflection of their peers’ actual lives.

Constant exposure to these edited, or at least carefully posed, versions of other people’s lives can distort a young person’s sense of what’s normal fuelling comparison and feelings of inadequacy, even when there’s no rational basis for them. FOMO, the fear of missing out, adds another layer on top of everything else: seeing evidence of a social event happening without you can trigger real feelings of exclusion, even if the event itself was small and unremarkable. Most of these reactions, triggered by social media, happen subconsciously.

Teenage girls, in particular, are especially vulnerable. The world constantly presents an image of what “beautiful” looks like, and many teen girls absorb that framework quickly, believing it matters far more than it should. Unrealistic beauty standards, combined with the risk of eating disorders and diet culture, make this an especially serious problem.

My daughter spends time with her girl peers and always comes back with the same striking observation: they eat almost nothing. They often describe themselves as overweight or obese when that’s simply not true. Meanwhile, they drink energy drinks and soda constantly, sugar instead of anything that actually nourishes their bodies.

But let’s be honest: these habits often trace directly back to what parents put in the shopping cart.

There’s also something I want to raise that tends to go quietly unmentioned often out of so-called “political correctness.” I’m talking about racism.

Let’s not pretend otherwise. Racism exists in every culture, everywhere. The only real question is how much, and how well it’s masked. Living as an immigrant in a foreign country makes you especially sensitive to this.

To be clear, I’m not saying Irish people are racist. Not at all. But that doesn’t mean the problem doesn’t exist. My daughter speaks English fluently, yet to this day, she doesn’t have a single close Irish friend. Not one. She spends time with girls from Spain, Croatia, and other countries but officially, at school, this issue “doesn’t exist.” In the real world, though, the kids can feel it.

Many teenagers are uncomfortable with that reality even if no one says it out loud.

The Parents Who Kill Their Children’s Dreams.

Identity and independence are two more factors often suppressed by parents and teachers.

As you know, my daughter will leave school at the age of sixteen. It was entirely her decision, and I’m not writing this to convince anyone that her choice is right and her peers’ choices are wrong. It’s simply her decision, she wants to build her life a different way. What I want to point out is that at this stage of life, the vast majority of teenagers feel a real lack of independent decision-making. Instead, they’re overwhelmed by the pressure of parents and society telling them what’s supposedly good for them.

We parents are, in many ways, the perfect killers of our children’s dreams. We tell ourselves we know better. We tell ourselves we know what they want. But let’s be fully honest in many cases, we don’t. We try to see our own unfulfilled dreams reflected in them instead.

I’m not suggesting the majority of teenagers should suddenly quit school. What I’m suggesting is that maybe it’s worth simply asking our children what they want to do. Maybe it’s worth giving them more room to choose and yes, that requires real risk and real uncertainty. Many of my daughter’s peers have told her there’s no chance to even raise the question of other options. Period.

Look at it closely: as parents, we undoubtedly want good things for our children. But paradoxically, we create a state of constant anxiety, what if I don’t get these grades? What if my career doesn’t go as planned? But the real question is: is that career chosen by our children, or is it the direction we want to see them go in?

Most of these problems start because many parents don’t talk openly with their kids. We project our own dreams, and the pressure of society, onto them as if they were the norm forgetting that, however young, they are independent human beings. Giving them no options, pushing them in a single direction, shapes a life in ways that, in many cases, can’t be undone.

Two Lives Under One Roof.

There’s a huge problem with being respected by our children but that respect is one of the biggest challenges of the early stages of their lives, and its absence weakens our connection with them. I’m not here to judge. I’m here to be honest, and to mention what I see.

Very often, the lives of teenagers and parents look like two separate lives under one roof. They come back from school, eat something, mention that everything at school is “fine,” and disappear into their rooms, closing the door behind them, immersing themselves in their digital world. Many parents don’t even know what their kids are doing in there. Many pretend everything is fine, because that’s simply how life has always been built for them.

Yesterday, I sat with my daughter and gave her my full attention, no distractions. Our conversation moved naturally toward her ideas about what she wants to do after leaving school. I listened carefully. I watched how she opened up, how she filled the space I gave her with her own observations and ideas.

We simply talked to each other. For both of us, that’s a natural way to communicate, even at her young age. But I’ve realised that what feels obvious to me doesn’t feel obvious to everyone. I’ve seen, many times, within our own extended family, a real lack of respect from teenagers toward their parents.

We parents have lost the ability to talk and spend time with our children. We fill that void by keeping them busy, pushing them into sports activities, letting their peers step in and show them, in many ways, how the world works, instead of doing it ourselves.

Most of the problems teenagers face often trace back to one day, one decision, sometimes made subconsciously when we simply stopped doing what we should have been doing: talking to them, showing up for them, just being with them. This isn’t about guilt. It’s about reflection, recognising that the most beautiful moments with our children often disappear not because of external forces, but because of our own actions, or more precisely, the lack of them.

There is always time to be closer to our teenagers. Maybe today is a good day to sit down and talk with them, to ask what they’re afraid of. Maybe it’s time to build the habit of simply spending time together. Time passes quickly, and believe me soon their room will be empty, because they’ll be out on their own, and there won’t be another chance to talk to them the way we wish we had. Don’t miss it.

Some of you may have noticed that my daughter is choosing a somewhat different path than the vast majority of young people her age. Every one of us, as parents, has a different vision of how to support our children. But without a doubt, we’re all working toward the same outcome: we just want to help them, support them, and make their lives easier.

The world is changing, and it will look completely different in 5 or 10 years.

The education system which is, in most countries, an arm of government is outdated. It doesn’t teach young people what actually matters. Its purpose, whether we like to admit it or not, is mainly to create workers: people educated enough to do a job. And here’s the caveat many parents miss regardless of how educated your child becomes, regardless of how many degrees they collect, they can still be financially illiterate. This isn’t an accident. It’s the result of a system and a society built a certain way, one we’ve been convinced is simply “how things are” and “good for us.”

Today I want to talk about the two skills I believe matter most for young people, and why we as parents need to teach them ourselves because the system won’t.

This article isn’t against school. Not at all. It’s about two things that shape a life for decades: critical thinking and financial literacy. You can graduate at the top of your class and still struggle financially your entire adult life. This is what this article is about.

Why the Numbers Should Scare Every Parent.

Before getting into the two skills, it’s worth looking at what the current system actually produces.

In the UK, the average graduate now leaves university with somewhere between £45,000 and £53,000 in student debt. Only around a quarter of graduates are ever expected to repay that debt in full, the rest carries on for decades, or gets written off after 30–40 years. Graduates in Scotland, where tuition is free, leave with a fraction of that: around £18,000. Same country, wildly different outcome, entirely dependent on policy rather than the student’s effort or intelligence.

In the US, the picture is just as sobering. Total student debt sits at $1.86 trillion. Nearly half of bachelor’s degree graduates leave school with debt, averaging around $29,560 and for the incoming Class of 2026, that number is projected to climb to roughly $43,500. Graduate and professional degrees push individuals into six figures regularly.

None of this debt was ever explained to these students the way a mortgage or a car loan would be. Most 18-year-olds sign these agreements without understanding compound interest, repayment thresholds, or what “top-heavy interest” even means. That’s not a personal failing. That’s a system that never taught them, by design or by neglect.

Chapter One: Critical Thinking.

Critical thinking is the ability to question a system instead of simply complying with it. It’s the difference between accepting “this is just how it’s done” and asking “why is it done this way, and does it actually serve me?”

Most schooling rewards the opposite of this. It rewards memorization, compliance, and getting the “right” answer within a rigid structure. Children who ask too many questions are often labeled disruptive rather than curious. But the skills that will matter most in the next decade adapting to new technology, evaluating conflicting information, making decisions under uncertainty all depend on a mind that’s been trained to question, not just absorb.

Critical thinkers are often seen by the education system as a real danger especially by the system itself. When a child starts logically questioning something that doesn’t make sense, schools have a wide range of tools to suppress it, and they use them without hesitation. Why? Because they can’t afford to entertain new ideas when their job is to deliver a curriculum handed down by ministers of education. They can’t afford to give lower grades to conformity, or to genuinely encourage parents to explore a different point of view with their child. Even a light version of mocking isn’t considered a big deal. A critical thinker is treated like a rebel in a carefully built environment but it’s an environment built and settled by government, for a world it was designed to serve, not the world these children will actually inherit.

Without support from parents, a critical-thinking child barely survives at school. The pressure to water down any perspective that differs from what’s officially presented is enormous. This is one reason some parents see such a striking difference once their child moves into private school or homeschooling options I personally think are worth serious consideration.

One of the most important things you can give a critical-thinking child is constant discussion at home, because they won’t find that support at school or among their peers. So how do you actually start teaching critical thinking? It’s simple in principle: question everything, discuss everything, encourage them to seek out different perspectives. Slowly, once you show them that many things could be done better than they currently are, the rest follows naturally.

It’s worth mentioning that being a critical thinker comes at a price. Many of these children are labeled troublemakers, “weird,” or out of touch with reality.

Critical thinking built at an early age is one of the best tools we can give our children. Why? Because they’ll see more clearly as adults. They’ll react better to unexpected events, and they’ll be better prepared for whatever life brings them.

Chapter Two: Financial Wisdom - And Why It Matters Even More for Daughters.

Financial literacy is the single most useful subject barely taught in schools. Most young adults enter the world understanding almost nothing about interest rates, debt, investing, negotiating a salary, or building wealth over time. They learn it, if they ever do the expensive way, through mistakes.

This matters for every child. But it matters more, statistically, for daughters.

Women still earn less over a lifetime than men in most countries, a gap that persists across income levels and professions. On top of that, the debt data tells its own story: female bachelor’s degree holders in the US borrow more than their male peers, and among associate’s degree holders, women borrow over 14% more than men. That means women are, on average, starting adult life with a double disadvantage slightly more debt, and a smaller pay check to pay it down with.

If a daughter isn’t taught to negotiate her salary, question a loan’s true cost, understand investing, or build financial independence early, she isn’t just missing a skill, she’s stepping into a system already tilted against her, without the tools to correct for it. Financial literacy isn’t a “nice to have” for girls. It’s a compensating skill for a gap the world hasn’t closed yet.

Teaching a daughter financial wisdom means teaching her:

How to read a loan or contract before signing it - not after.

How compound interest works both for her (investing) and against her (debt).

How to negotiate - pay, rent, prices - as a normal, expected behaviour, not something rude or unfeminine.

That a degree is a tool, not a guarantee, and should be evaluated the same way any other investment would be: cost versus expected return.

That financial independence is a form of freedom, not something to be handed to her by someone else later in life.

I’m so grateful I was able to teach her financial literacy early on, it was, without question, the key factor in feeling confident enough to support her path.

Chapter Three: The System Behind the System.

In today’s world, we tend to miss many details that only become visible when we zoom out. Doing so helps us understand why the education system remains, at its core, an obsolete environment. Of course the tools change, children now use tablets instead of textbooks but the underlying principle hasn’t shifted in decades. The goal is simple: produce enough educated workers who are taught to obey the rules and join the workforce smoothly, without questioning the system.

The education system is deeply compatible with the banking system. One doesn’t teach economics properly; the other benefits enormously from that gap. We can add society itself as a third pillar of this arrangement, the US is perhaps the clearest example. For years, society has been taught that your wealth is measured by something called a credit score. In reality, the system is built so that avoiding it is almost impossible. Credit cards have become a “normal” financial tool. Used responsibly - paid off monthly - they aren’t inherently bad. But let’s be honest: for many people, they exist to anchor them deeply into debt, and when trouble hits, the common response is simply to open another credit card to cover the first one.

Higher education has shifted over the years into something closer to a business model, one that ensures young people leave anchored to debt the moment they graduate. Many live under an illusion of “wealth,” because debt-funded status has become a socially accepted way to appear rich. But the moment real problems hit, this fragile structure starts shaking, fast. People without solid economic knowledge fall into it easily, and their only visible option becomes working harder just to service the debt often to maintain an appearance of status in front of neighbours and family. The cost of this is high. Very quickly, people become stressed, exhausted, and burnt out.

This is exactly why it matters so much for parents to educate themselves first, and then teach their children how the economy actually works.

It’s no coincidence that elementary school, secondary school, and high school rarely mention what compound interest is, why gold is money, or who is actually responsible for creating inflation. It’s a strange paradox: many people graduate, go on to earn very good incomes, and still have no idea how to manage the money they make.

Where This Leaves Us as Parents.

None of this is an argument to skip school or dismiss education. It’s an argument that school was never designed to teach the two things that will determine whether our children thrive or merely survive: how to think for themselves, and how to manage money well.

Those two things are our job. Not the government’s, not the university’s. Ours.

My daughter’s path might look different from most of her peers. That’s fine. My job isn’t to make sure she follows the same road everyone else is on, it’s to make sure she can think clearly and manage money wisely enough to build whatever road she chooses.

A Personal Note.

Two days ago, while I was still working on this article, my daughter came to me and told me that over the last month, in almost every conversation with her peers, they’d tried to convince her to continue with school. But that wasn’t the most interesting part. The interesting part was that all of their arguments centered on the idea that she was massively closing off her opportunities by not continuing. Her opinion is the exact opposite, she sees it as widening them.

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying I have no doubts about supporting her choice. I question it often, because the responsibility is enormous, this decision can shape her entire life. But when I talk with her, when I listen to the calm certainty in how she describes her path, it always brings me a kind of faith that she’ll handle whatever obstacles come, and that she’ll be happy and successful.

We talk often about how important it is to be successful, but rarely do we connect success with happiness and they are two very different things. I’m grateful that at 15, she’s already brave enough to have a clear picture of what she doesn’t want and what she does. Of course, we don’t have answers to many questions, and at this stage, we can’t. But at least she’s equipped with the two skills I’ve written about today. She’s a critical thinker, an observer who questions everything. And she understands how money works, and exactly what she’d do the moment she starts earning it.

Life will bring the rest of the answers, sooner or later.

So many parents are surprised, later in life, that their relationship with their children isn’t what they hoped for or, to be more precise, isn’t what they wished it could be. But a wish on its own is just empty imagination. If it isn’t backed by real action, it stays a wish, and over time it invites other guests along with it: regret, and the quiet ache of a connection that was never really built.

The Longest Shower of My Life.

I remember the exact night my daughter was born. I stood there and watched her come into the world. She was so small that when we brought her home, even her smallest clothes were too big for her.

After that emotional night, I came home, completely drained and completely happy at the same time. I took a shower, the longest shower of my life. It lasted thirty minutes, and I’m not exaggerating when I say everything started in that shower. I cried from happiness.

Years later, Helena said to me, “I’ve never seen you cry.”

I told her, “I’ve cried twice in the last fifteen years, once when you were born, and once when Inter Milan won the Champions League.

I have one rule with my daughter: I never promise her anything unless I’m 100% sure I can deliver it. It doesn’t matter what it is. She’s learned that when I give my word, it happens, always. Through that, she’s also learned that your word to other people, your promises, should never be empty.

Standing in that shower, I made myself one promise. Now that I was a father, I would be a committed dad. Literally committed, whatever that would end up meaning.

The Early Years.

This is how our journey began.

As I mentioned, she was small, and she did most things later than other children. Her teeth came in late. She learned to walk after most kids her age already had. But every child is different, and I was patient. She was curious from the very beginning, but also careful. She started talking later than most too.

Time passed. I loved playing with her. I taught her to swim, and later to ride a bike, she swims better than I do now, honestly.

The Big Decision.

When she was five, I started thinking about leaving Poland to give her different opportunities. Most people who emigrate do it for financial reasons. That wasn’t the case for me.

The night my idea turned into something real was when I met a Polish family visiting home for Christmas, they lived in the UK. I noticed their English car registration plate and started asking questions: what’s life like there, are you happy? They had two daughters. They were happy, with no plans to come back. I sat with that for a while. If they could do it, why couldn’t I?

So I started acting. My target was the UK. I began sending my CV to companies. I’d spent almost twenty years in the stainless steel industry as a salesman in Poland.

Then Brexit happened, and I was devastated. It wasn’t the end of the plan, but it made everything far more complicated. I came close to giving up on the whole idea. Then, staring at a map, I noticed Republic of Ireland is still in the EU.

I sent one email to one company. The rest is history. One months later, I had the job offer.

But there was one Saturday when I had to give my final answer, yes or no. When you’re 43, with a small child, a stable job, a new car, a new apartment, taking that kind of risk isn’t easy. I said yes. Family and friends told me, more or less openly, that I was crazy.

Landing in Ireland.

We landed in Ireland. Helena was almost six when she started school without a single word of English.

I made a decision: no Polish TV, English only. She watched Peppa Pig and other cartoons and just listened. Her teacher told me later that she stayed quiet for six months. Then, one day, it was like someone flipped a switch, and she started talking. Today her English is flawless. I couldn’t be more proud.

Through all of it, my commitment never wavered. We talked. We played.

Leading by Example, Not by Force.

I’m a dad who tries to pass ideas on to his daughter not by forcing them on her, but by living them, by being an example and explaining why something might be worth doing. It’s always been a two-way exchange.

I started working out, eating healthier, learning about economics. She started listening in - inflation, gold, investing - at ten years old, simply because she was listening to what I was listening to.

One day I asked her if she wanted to try self-defense training. So we started Krav Maga together.

Over the years, I’ve often felt that friends and family quietly or not so quietly mocked me, painting me as an overprotective, overly involved dad. But I kept doing what I’d committed to. And I’ve seen, again and again, that it works.

The Contortionist and the YouTube Channel.

One rainy Irish spring, Helena discovered Anna McNulty, one of the best contortionists in the world, if you haven’t seen her, look her up on YouTube.

One day I walked past my daughter and was stunned by what she was doing. She explained it all to me, and I simply asked: do you want to start a YouTube channel showing what you can do?

That’s how her channel was born. I spent countless hours with her at the beach, in Dublin filming videos. She was good. Good enough to win her school tournament in sixth class. She reached 20,000 subscribers.

And then she decided to quit. I didn’t push her to keep going. I knew how much she’d learned, and how good she’d become.

I’m not sharing this to impress anyone with what my daughter can do. I’m sharing it because ongoing commitment and support give your children the space to explore the world, to learn, to fail, and to discover what they actually want. That’s how trust is built. That’s how bonds are built.

Along the way, I also encouraged her to learn German. I know how much value there is in speaking another language. I found her a tutor, and she’s been taking lessons online ever since.

Idea First, Then Action.

This whole journey proves one thing to me: the idea always comes first, then the action. I was scared more times than I can count, but I refused to let that fear dictate my decisions. I did it anyway.

It’s just as important to give your child space, to step back and let them try something new. That’s how they learn what they love and what they don’t.

I think that’s exactly how she developed her critical thinking. She’s shy, she’s an introvert, but she knows precisely where she’s headed. She’s open to trying new things, and that’s exactly what I love to see in her: experiment, learn, fail, adjust, start something new.

What Commitment Really Means.

This isn’t about commitment the way most people first think of it. Yes, it’s about showing up, being present but it’s just as much about the commitment of not being around. It’s about allowing our children to discover their world without intervening, even when we can see something isn’t working. Allowing them to fail and learn their own lessons because those lessons, being theirs, will be some of the most valuable they’ll ever have.

It’s about trust, trust that our children know they can always come to us and talk openly, without judgment, and that we’ll listen carefully and try to understand their perspective. It’s about ongoing, unconditional support, which is one of the hardest parts of all, especially when we hold a different opinion, or know from our own experience that another choice would be better. Stepping back from always being the provider of “wisdom” is challenging, but the space we give them by doing so is one of the greatest gifts we can offer. This kind of commitment takes the courage to sometimes say, “I don’t know,” and let them make the decision themselves.

One of the best compliments I’ve ever received from my daughter came about four years ago, a simple sentence that hit me deeply. She said: “You know, Dad, you’re always there when I need you.”

That’s the commitment we want to build. The knowledge that, no matter what happens, we have their back.

It takes time to build, because trust can’t be bought only earned.

As parents, we don’t hold a monopoly on knowing everything, especially not on how to raise our children. There’s no magic book handed to us at their birth with all the answers. No. We fail and we learn, year after year, and that’s inevitable, there’s nothing wrong with that. We’re only human. But children have two capabilities we often underestimate: they’re remarkable silent observers, and they can sense whether we support them regardless of their choices.

Did I do things differently? Of course I made mistakes, and yes, I’d do some things differently if I could. But that’s the beauty of the bond you’re able to build. Our children know, deep down, exactly when we’re wrong and they trust us anyway.

Being a parent is an ongoing journey of being surprised. One of the best traits my daughter has developed is her ability to be critical of me included. A lot of people in our family assume we always see eye to eye. Not at all. She’s my toughest critic, and she does it honestly, without filters, because deep down she knows she’s allowed to. I won’t pretend I never get defensive at first but before complaining, I make myself think about why she said what she said, and whether she might be right. That’s the space where openness gives children the courage to fully express themselves, instead of holding back because they feel they shouldn’t say something. These bonds, this kind of commitment, are formed early in life, the moment children realise we don’t have to be perfect, only present when they need us, while still giving them the room to grow freely and build their own confidence and convictions.

I’ll say this too: no matter what we have or haven’t done as parents, it’s never too late to ask, to sit down, and to talk to them.

Not a Perfect Parent - Just a Man of His Word.

I’m not a perfect parent. There’s no such thing. But fifteen years ago, I made a commitment and I’m a man of my word. I deliver on what I promise myself: to give her everything I can, so she can discover this world in her own way.

I don’t like being right about this, but unfortunately I was. I’ve said before that stablecoins are rolling out slowly and steadily, and that the whole system is being closed off, piece by piece, toward full surveillance and control. Digital ID in Ireland isn’t a hypothetical anymore, it’s reality. So here are two questions worth asking: Why did Simon Harris invite influencers to help campaign for his new financial scheme? And why didn’t he invite them to teach people who actually causes inflation, or why gold has functioned as money for thousands of years? I think the answers aren’t hard to find.

Every week there’s a stack of headlines that look unrelated. Energy bills. Central banks. A war in the Gulf. A finance minister courting influencers. New stablecoin rules. A digital ID rollout. Taken one at a time, none of it means much. Taken together, it’s the clearest picture you’ll get of what the people actually in charge of money and power believe is coming.

They’re not telling you in speeches. They’re telling you in what they’re buying, building, and bracing for.

This Is What Inflation Manipulation Looks Like.

This week lays out US inflation figures plainly

Money Supply Growth at 7.5%,

PCE Inflation at 4.1%,

Core PCE at 3.4%,

Trimmed Mean PCE at 2.4%.

Look at the gap between the first number and the rest. The money supply is expanding more than twice as fast as the “official” inflation figures being reported. That gap doesn’t disappear, it shows up in your grocery bill, your rent, your energy costs. But the headline number people are told to trust is always the smallest one on the chart. That’s the trick: pick the metric that understates the damage, publish that one, and let people believe prices are under control while the money in their pocket is quietly worth less every month. People are expected to just believe it, and most do, because nobody hands them the full chart.

Stablecoins.

Irish company Stripe joins the consortium.

This week Stripe, an Irish company joined a global consortium including BlackRock, Google, Coinbase, Visa, and Mastercard to launch a new stablecoin called Open USD.

It’s being framed as competition, as innovation, as “shared infrastructure.” What it actually is: the same institutions that already control payments, banking, and now money supply itself, building the next layer of the system together, while regulators simultaneously tighten the rules that decide who’s allowed to compete. Circle’s stock dropped over 17% the day it was announced. That’s not a coincidence, that’s market share being redistributed among the same handful of players who already run everything.

NATO and the defence spending target.

NATO’s chief said he’s confident that Andy Burnham the likely next UK Prime Minister will stick to the defence spending target, this after the UK unveiled a nearly £300 billion defence investment plan funded not by new revenue but by trimming other departments’ budgets by 1%. Massive military commitments get locked in before the public even votes for the person who’ll be asked to honor them.

The money has to come from somewhere, and it always seems to come from the same place: quietly, out of budgets nobody scrutinies closely, while the bigger number the one that would show people what it’s actually costing them stays out of the headline.

Three different stories. Same pattern. The number that would tell you the truth doesn’t get promoted. The number that keeps you calm does. And you’re expected to just believe it.

The Smart Money Is Buying Gold Like It’s 1974.

Central banks now hold more gold than at any point in fifty years over 36,000 tonnes, the highest since 1975. They’ve been buying at double the previous decade’s pace, roughly 1,000 tonnes a year, ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. This isn’t passive portfolio management. It’s a hedge, and the institutions doing the hedging are the ones with the best information money can buy.

Gold now makes up a bigger share of official reserves than U.S. Treasuries do 27% versus 22%. That’s a quiet but enormous statement: even the custodians of the dollar-based system are diversifying away from it.

China’s appetite tells the same story: its monthly gold imports hit their highest level in more than two years, with year-to-date volumes up 76%.

When the people who print money start stockpiling the one asset no government can print, that’s not a headline. That’s a warning.

The Bases Are Already Burning.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says it destroyed American military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain. Bahrain reported a residential building hit, its top floor blown out. Trump has warned that if the strikes continue, the U.S. will “militarily complete the job” and that the Islamic Republic “will no longer exist” if that line gets crossed.

This is the unspoken backdrop to every other story this week. A “ceasefire” being violated by both sides within days of being signed isn’t peace, it’s a pause that the market, and apparently the central banks, aren’t fully trusting either.

Simon Harris Brought In the Influencers.

This week Simon Harris met with a group of influencers to talk about his new savings scheme. The influencers invited have hundreds of thousands of followers between them a reach most government press releases could never dream of.

The scheme needs adoption to work, so it gets a marketing push built around the people best positioned to drive that adoption. There was no equivalent effort to bring in anyone to explain who actually causes inflation, or why gold has held value for thousands of years while currencies haven’t. One topic got a campaign. The other didn’t.

The Money System Is Being Rebuilt in Real Time.

At the exact moment the Federal Reserve is tightening the rules around stablecoins, requiring identity verification, AML compliance, the whole bank-style apparatus, a consortium backed by BlackRock, Google, and Coinbase has announced it’s launching its own stablecoin. Called Open USD, the new dollar-backed token is set to launch later this year on the Coinbase-affiliated blockchain. Circle, the company best positioned to benefit from the Fed’s new rules, isn’t part of it.

The institutions that already run the financial system are racing each other to own whatever comes next, while simultaneously helping write the rules that will decide who’s allowed to compete.

Identity Is Becoming Infrastructure.

Ireland has begun rolling out a government digital wallet, EU-mandated, due across all 27 member states by the end of this year. Officially, it’s optional, and the regulation says access to services can’t be restricted for people who opt out. But Ireland has already floated using the same wallet for age verification on social media.

And Meanwhile, You’re Worried About a Meter Reading.

Millions of Britons could end up paying higher energy bills than they need to if they don’t submit a meter reading before the price cap rises Wednesday. An estimated 5.3 million households on standard tariffs without a smart meter have been urged to act before the new gas and electricity rates take effect — or risk being billed at the higher rate for energy they used beforehand.

That’s the real asymmetry. The institutions with the most information get to hedge years in advance. The people with the least get a 48-hour warning about their own utility bill and a roundtable with influencers instead of a lesson in monetary policy.

The Thread.

Gold reserves at a 50-year high. A shooting war the ceasefire can’t contain. A new digital dollar built by the institutions that already own the old one. A digital ID rollout dressed as convenience. A defence budget locked in before anyone votes for the person who’ll run it. And you, deciding whether a meter reading is worth your Tuesday night.

This is the most important and personal article I’ve written here.

If you feel constant fatigue, if you feel an ongoing lack of understanding from a partner or a close member of your family, if you endlessly ask yourself why they don’t listen to you, why they don’t understand you, today I am going to break down exactly why. Why you feel completely drained. Why you have lost your self-confidence. Why you feel stuck in a life that doesn’t feel like yours anymore.

I had all of these feelings, all of these doubts, all of these questions for years. And I couldn’t understand why the same patterns kept repeating over and over again, with the same people, in the same ways, with the same devastating results.

Everything changed when I finally discovered the Dark Triad and realised who I had been dealing with for years, and why I could never win.

Please read this carefully and look honestly at your own situation. Even if just one person wakes up after reading this article, it was worth every difficult word. But it isn’t easy to write. The wounds are deep, not because a knife cuts, but because something far worse happened. Years of being slowly drained of energy, of your true self, to the point where you began to question everything. Maybe they’re right. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe something is wrong with me.

The truth is the complete opposite.

Welcome to the world of the Dark Triad. Psychopaths, manipulators, and narcissists. There is no mercy in how they operate. And there is only one way to rescue yourself, escape. Because these people never change. I will repeat that, because it took me years to truly believe it: they never change.

Where It All Begins.

The term Dark Triad originates from 2002, when psychologists Delroy L. Paulhus and Kevin M. Williams coined it at the University of British Columbia. It describes three distinct but overlapping psychological personality traits: Machiavellianism, Narcissism, and Psychopathy.

While each of these concepts has older historical roots, what makes the Dark Triad framework significant is how these three traits can coexist and reinforce one another within the same person creating a pattern of behaviour that is particularly difficult to recognise and even more difficult to escape.

Before going further, I want to properly define each one. Not to overwhelm you with clinical language, but because understanding what you are actually dealing with changes everything.

The Three Traits Defined.

Machiavellianism is a personality trait characterised by manipulation, deceit, a cynical worldview, and a calculated focus on self-interest. People with this trait view others as tools to achieve power or status and prioritise outcomes over conventional morality. They are patient, strategic, and often lack empathy. They rarely act impulsively everything is calculated.

Narcissism is a personality trait characterised by an inflated sense of self-importance, a deep need for excessive admiration, and a fundamental lack of empathy. Psychologists generally identify two primary expressions:

Grandiose Narcissism - characterised by extroversion, dominance, and an over-inflated ego. Individuals often exhibit arrogance, aggression, and an unshakeable sense of superiority.

Vulnerable or Covert Narcissism - characterised by deep insecurity, defensiveness, and hypersensitivity to criticism. These individuals may appear quiet and even fragile on the surface, but beneath that they harbour intense feelings of entitlement and covert hostility. This one is particularly difficult to spot and in my experience, particularly destructive.

Psychopathy is a personality construct characterised by a profound lack of empathy, an absence of remorse, and persistent antisocial behaviour. It is often masked by superficial charm. Individuals with these traits may engage in manipulation, deceit, and impulsive actions without experiencing guilt or fear. They can be remarkably likeable in short interactions which is precisely what makes them dangerous over time.

How Rare Are These Traits Really?

This is where I want to slow down because this distinction matters enormously, both for accuracy and for fairness.

Machiavellianism exists on a personality spectrum. Psychologists typically measure it using the Mach-IV test, where scores above 60 indicate a high Machiavellian personality and scores below 60 indicate a low Machiavellian profile. Most people sit somewhere in between, leaning toward one end or the other depending on circumstance, upbringing, and experience.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder affects between 0.5% and 1% of the global population - roughly one in every 100 to 200 people. However, because narcissism is a spectrum, the picture is more nuanced than that single statistic suggests. Approximately 15% to 18% of people about one in six exhibit narcissistic traits significant enough to be genuinely problematic in everyday relationships. This does not make them narcissists in the clinical sense. It means they have narcissistic personality styles that can cause real harm, particularly in close relationships over long periods of time.

Clinically significant psychopathy affects roughly 0.5% to 1% of the general adult population globally again, approximately one in every 100 to 200 people. It is also worth noting that high levels of psychopathic traits are approximately two to four times more common in males than in females.

What does all of this mean in practical terms? Most of us will never meet a true clinical psychopath or a fully diagnosed narcissist. But many of us will encounter people who carry significant traits from one or more of these categories traits that, even without a clinical diagnosis, can cause profound damage to the people around them.

The distinction between having traits and being the disorder is not a technicality. It is essential. And I say this not to minimise anyone’s experience including my own, but to be honest, because honesty is the entire point of this series.

An Important Distinction Worth Understanding.

Before going deeper, I want to be honest about something because getting this right matters.

The term Dark Triad is a psychological framework, not a casual label to throw at anyone who has ever hurt you. True clinical narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism are spectrums and diagnosing someone as sitting at the extreme end of any one of them is the work of trained psychiatrists, not something any of us can do from the outside looking in.

Here is what I have come to understand: everyone carries traits of at least one of these patterns to some degree. That is simply part of being human. Having narcissistic traits doesn’t make someone a narcissist. Displaying manipulative behaviour in moments of fear or insecurity doesn’t make someone a psychopath. Traits are not the same as being. The distance between occasionally exhibiting a characteristic and fully embodying a clinical disorder is vast.

What I am describing in this article is something more precise, a pattern of consistent, sustained behaviour that over years left me emotionally depleted, constantly questioned, and unable to understand why no amount of effort or explanation ever changed anything. Whether the people involved would meet a clinical diagnosis is not something I can determine. What I can speak to is the impact. The lived experience. The compound damage of being in close relationships with people whose behaviour was persistently toxic, regardless of what label, if any, a professional might attach to it.

You can be a deeply toxic person without belonging to the Dark Triad. And recognising toxic behaviour for what it is and protecting yourself from it doesn’t require a diagnosis. It requires honesty.

That is what this article is about.

The Noise in My Head That Was Never Real.

For years, I wasted enormous amounts of time and energy on something that never existed - worry.

As human beings, we tend to worry about things that never materialise. I was that person. Always exaggerating, always building hundreds of “what if” scenarios in my head, constructing entire catastrophes that, in 98% of cases, never came to pass. It consumed my time, my energy. It built a constant loop of anxiety around things that simply didn’t exist.

I spent years living that way.

Last Saturday I was sitting in our small garden, sipping my cup of coffee. The weather was beautiful: a sunny day, a brilliant blue sky, birds singing. And I realised that for the first time in many years, I wasn’t worrying about anything. Literally anything.

The feeling was absolutely fascinating. I couldn’t remember ever experiencing that kind of state before. A constant calm in my head, no thoughts racing, no analysis, no anxiety, no “what if” questions. Just silence. Just now.

I asked myself: what happened that I finally reached this level of calmness?

The answer was more complex than I expected.

The Energy Drain I Refused to Name.

First and foremost, I got rid of all the toxic people in my life.

That single decision gave me an enormous amount of energy and a void, which I quickly filled with meaningful work. No more wasting time explaining myself to people who exploited me. No more endlessly justifying my logic to those who never intended to understand it in the first place.

One of the most important lessons I have ever learned is this: don’t surround yourself with people who drain you. Cut toxic people off without exception, because that is the only way to reclaim your energy. I know that sounds harsh. I know it feels easier said than done. But I lost years learning this the hard way.

For years, I struggled with the same people, repeating the same patterns. I was constantly nervous but didn’t understand why - why, despite my endless explanations and perfectly reasonable logic, nothing ever changed. I kept believing that if I just tried harder, gave more, explained better, they would eventually come around.

They never did.

What I didn’t understand then is that it never made any sense to try. These people didn’t need my explanations. They needed me to feed their ego, to fuel their unresolved traumas, to serve as proof to the outside world that everything was brilliant when it clearly wasn’t.

The Dark Triad: When I Finally Had a Name for It.

Eventually, I came across the Dark Triad framework - and everything I had been experiencing for years suddenly had a context.

I’m sharing this because I want you to recognise it, ideally far earlier than I did.

Understanding this framework was a turning point for me. It gave me language for what I had been experiencing for years. It helped me stop asking “why don’t they listen?” and start asking “why am I still here?”

The answer to that second question was uncomfortable. I stayed because I believed in people’s capacity to change. I stayed because I was raised to persist, to deliver, to be the bigger person. I stayed because walking away felt like failure.

What I eventually understood is that with people exhibiting these traits at their most extreme, staying is the real failure. These people don’t change. They don’t want to. The dynamic was never about growth or genuine connection, it was always about control. And the moment you stop providing what they need, they will try every trick available to pull you back in. Guilt, manipulation, sudden warmth, playing the victim, all of it in service of regaining the control they lost.

If you ever find yourself constantly exhausted around someone, constantly explaining yourself, constantly feeling like nothing you do is ever enough, pay attention to that feeling. It is trying to tell you something important.

The only real answer is to walk away and never look back.

The Most Dangerous People You’ll Ever Meet.

What makes persistently toxic behaviour truly dangerous isn’t loudness or obvious cruelty. It’s the opposite.

These patterns operate quietly, almost invisibly, because the people who exhibit them at their most extreme often don’t recognise anything wrong with themselves. There is no moment of self-reflection, no guilt, no awareness that something is broken. For them, this is simply their default mode. The way they have always operated. The way they always will.

I spent years in close relationships with two people whose behaviour followed these patterns consistently. And looking back now, I can see clearly what I couldn’t see then the slow, compound damage that built up day after day, year after year.

„You’re Too Sensitive” - Three Words That Can Destroy You.

One of the most common phrases I heard was: “You’re too sensitive.”

On the surface, that sentence doesn’t look dangerous. It doesn’t sound like abuse. It doesn’t leave a mark you can show anyone. But when it is repeated consistently, over months and years, something insidious begins to happen. You start to question yourself. Maybe they’re right. Maybe there is something wrong with me. Maybe I am overreacting.

Drop by drop, little by little, you begin to lose your self-worth. You start to diminish yourself. And simultaneously and this is the part that trapped me for so long, you start trying harder. You deliver more. You sacrifice more. You tell yourself that if they can just see how much effort you’re putting in, they will change how they see you.

But that never happens.

The more you give, the more they take. The more you sacrifice, the more they exploit. There is no loud drama, no obvious breaking point just a quiet, relentless compound effect that over time becomes absolutely devastating. You lose your energy. You lose your desire to do the things you actually want to do, because every last drop of what you have is being consumed by a battle you were never going to win.

I didn’t understand this for years. And when I finally did, I was genuinely shocked by how much of myself I had lost.

The Abuse Nobody Talks About.

Here is something that took me a very long time to recognise and even longer to say out loud.

When most people hear the word abuse, they picture something physical, something visible, something that leaves evidence. But the abuse I experienced left no physical marks. It was emotional. Quiet. Invisible to everyone around me.

And that invisibility is precisely what makes it so difficult to escape.

These people are experts at managing two completely separate versions of themselves. At home, behind closed doors, they project their ego onto you the criticism, the dismissal, the constant undermining. But in the outside world, in front of family, colleagues, and friends, they are charming, polite, warm. Exactly the kind of person everyone likes.

The Hardest Realisation: I Was Wrong Too.

Here is the part that took me the longest to admit - I was wrong too.

I was a people pleaser. For years, I watered myself down always delivering, always avoiding conflict, always putting in more effort because I genuinely believed that if I did, people would eventually change. They didn’t. And over time, the disrespect grew. My energy collapsed. I became exhausted in a way that went far deeper than tiredness.

We human beings have a remarkable tolerance for bad situations. We adapt, we justify, we tell ourselves it will get better. But everyone reaches a limit eventually. I hit mine.

What followed wasn’t dramatic. It was quiet and necessary. It was about self-preservation about setting boundaries, sticking to them, and learning to say no when something or someone didn’t serve my life. Not out of cruelty. Out of survival.

For the first time, I stopped shrinking myself to fit other people’s comfort. And I want you to never shrink yourself for anyone. Not once.

What Happens When You Stop.

I cannot change my past. The only thing I can change is what I do now. And so I started doing exactly that for the first time, executing entirely on my own terms.

What surprised me was how quickly everything shifted. Once I removed the toxic relationships, the constant worrying began to fade almost on its own. The two were deeply connected all along. The anxiety, the endless “what if” scenarios, they were being fed by those relationships. Remove the source, and the noise quietens.

I began putting my energy into what I actually wanted to do, what I genuinely enjoyed. And I noticed something else: there is always a solution to any real problem or setback when it appears. When you are no longer exhausted from managing other people’s chaos, you have the mental space and the energy to find it.

Life, it turns out, is far more abundant than I ever allowed myself to experience.

The Sentence That Changed Everything.

The more clarity and peace I found, the more energy I reclaimed. And as life doesn’t tolerate a void for long, it quietly wrote the next chapter for me even before I knew it was being written.

My daughter was the one who made it visible.

She has this rare ability to see things with a simplicity that cuts straight through any noise. One day, completely unprompted, she looked at me and said: “You should start doing something for yourself. You always did everything for others.”

I will be fully honest - it hit home deeply.

I spent the next two days trying to debunk the idea. Telling myself she was wrong, that I had done plenty for myself, that it wasn’t as simple as she made it sound. But the harder I tried to argue against it, the more I realised she was absolutely right. She saw in one sentence what had taken me years to live through.

That moment was the seed. This Substack was born from it. The rest, as they say, is already history.

Life Is a Collection of Small Decisions.

Our lives are not shaped by dramatic turning points as much as we like to believe. They are a collection of small decisions, ones we often don’t even think about, ones we make on autopilot, ones that seem insignificant in the moment but accumulate into everything we become.

I could have chosen to change nothing. I could have stayed in toxic relationships, continued pretending that everything was fine as so many people do. But I knew exactly how that story ends. I had seen enough of it already. I would have carried that regret to the end of my life.

So I made a different decision. I decided to reclaim myself.

And here is the lesson, it is so simple, yet so many people remain trapped by it for years, sometimes for a lifetime: never sacrifice yourself for others without limit, because there is no guarantee you won’t be betrayed or exploited in return. Giving endlessly without boundaries isn’t generosity. It’s a slow erosion of who you are.

Always choose yourself first. Set healthy boundaries and never allow others to disrespect you, not once, not repeatedly, not under any circumstances.

There are no coincidences in life only signs. It took me years to understand what those signs were trying to tell me. But I got there. And a large part of why I got there was my daughter.

The First Step Toward Freedom.

What the Dark Triad ultimately showed me is this: I am not alone. And more importantly, there are ways to remove persistently toxic people from your life not out of cruelty or bitterness, but out of self-preservation.

The first step is the hardest and the most important. It is recognising that you deserve the same treatment you give to others. That you are allowed to make choices for yourself. That you are allowed to find people who grow alongside you rather than feed on you.

You do not need a clinical diagnosis to justify protecting yourself. You do not need to prove that someone meets a specific psychological threshold before deciding that their behaviour is unacceptable.

You just need to be honest about what you are experiencing. And then you need to act on it.

Look closely at who you surround yourself with. Ask yourself honestly: do these people drain your energy? Do you feel uncomfortable around them consistently? Do you leave conversations feeling smaller than when you arrived? If the answer is yes, look closer. And then make a change.

There is no other solution when dealing with persistently toxic people than to remove yourself completely from the equation. They will not change. They will exploit and disrespect you until the moment you say stop. And even then, they will try to regain control because control was always the point.

The garden was quiet last week. The coffee was warm. The sky was blue.

That peace wasn’t luck. It wasn’t an accident. It was the result of every hard decision I finally had the courage to make.

And it started with a sentence from my daughter.

Your energy, your passion, your hope, these are finite resources. Allocating them to electoral cycles and political theatre is one of the most expensive mistakes a thinking person can make. Invest that energy instead into something meaningful: your skills, your community, your financial independence, your family. Politicians come and go. Your bills don’t.

Ukraine: If You’re Winning, Why Are You Recruiting Foreigners?

The headlines tell us that President Zelenskyy is boosting army wages and actively seeking foreign recruits to counter a manpower shortage. Take a moment to sit with that.

We are told, repeatedly, that Ukraine is holding firm, that momentum is shifting, that victory is within reach. Yet simultaneously, the country cannot fill its own ranks. If a nation is truly on the winning side of a conflict, why does it need to advertise abroad for soldiers? Why does it need to raise wages just to convince its own people to fight?

The answer nobody in mainstream media wants to say plainly is this: wars are not won through press releases. The human cost is staggering, the manpower wells are running dry, and the narrative of imminent victory is being propped up by the same machinery that has been propping it up for years.

What America’s Treasury Secretary Really Thinks of Zelensky.

And then there is Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, one of the most senior financial figures in the American government, a key architect of US economic policy, a man who sits at the very top of the Western alliance’s decision-making structure.

According to a new book, Bessent privately advised Donald Trump not to host Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. The reason? He had referred to the Ukrainian president as a “little fucker,” a “special-needs child,” and “Mr Bean on crack.”

Read that again slowly.

The man responsible for channeling billions of dollars of American financial support toward Ukraine’s war effort privately held its leader in open contempt. This is not a fringe commentator.

This is not a political opponent. This is the US Treasury Secretary and these are the words he used behind closed doors about the leader the Western world publicly celebrates as a heroic defender of democracy.

What does this tell us? It tells us that the gap between the public narrative and the private reality of geopolitics is not a crack, it is a chasm. The speeches, the standing ovations in European parliaments, the magazine covers they are theatre. The real conversations, the ones that actually shape decisions, sound very different. They always have.

Netanyahu Declares Victory: The War That Never Ends.

Benjamin Netanyahu has declared victory in Gaza. It is, to put it plainly, not true and on some level, everyone involved knows it is not true.

Military campaigns are not concluded by press conferences. Victory is not declared while operations are still ongoing, while hostages remain unaccounted for, while regional tensions are escalating rather than subsiding, and while your closest ally’s Treasury Secretary is privately negotiating documents of intent rather than peace treaties.

What Netanyahu’s declaration of victory actually represents is a political communication strategy, not a military or strategic reality. It is designed for a domestic audience that is exhausted, for an international audience that wants permission to move on, and for a media cycle that needs a resolution to close the chapter.

The situation on the ground tells a different story. The broader regional conflict involving Iran, Hezbollah, Houthi operations in the Red Sea, and the effective closure of critical shipping routes has not been resolved. It has been rebranded.

Declaring victory when the war is not over is one of the oldest political maneuvers in history. It works because most people want to believe it. The desire for resolution is so strong that a confident announcement, delivered with sufficient authority, can function as a substitute for actual resolution — at least until the next escalation arrives and requires its own explanation.

The Middle East: A Memorandum Is Not Peace.

What is being quietly discussed in diplomatic circles is, at best, a Memorandum of Understanding, an MOU. The distinction matters enormously.

An MOU means that hostilities between the relevant parties were so deep, so entrenched, so institutionally bitter, that the parties involved could barely agree to sit down and draft a non-binding document of intent. It is a diplomatic way of saying: we are not shooting at each other this week, and we have written that down.

The Strait of Hormuz through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply flows is not about to reopen smoothly because diplomats exchanged documents. The underlying tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran have not dissolved. They have been temporarily stage-managed for a news cycle.

Do not expect your energy bills to drop as a result. Do not expect food prices to stabilize because a press conference happened. The structural pressures driving your cost of living have not been addressed. They have been photographed and filed.

Andy Burnham and the UK: Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss.

Keir Starmer bows out emotionally. Andy Burnham prepares for power. The photography will be excellent. The speeches will be moving.

Here is the reality: nothing of substance will change.

Why? Because Burnham, like Starmer before him, like every serious candidate in the modern UK political establishment, will not sacrifice his political career for the tough, painful, genuinely unpopular reforms that could actually rescue the British economy. Real structural reform in housing, in energy infrastructure, in NHS financing, in tax policy requires a politician willing to lose. Willing to be hated for a parliamentary term in exchange for building something that actually works.

No one in that class of politician exists right now in Westminster. What exists are managers of decline who speak the language of transformation. Expect a new cabinet, new branding, and the same paralysis dressed in slightly different rhetoric. It will be, as it always has been, a game of empty promises performed for an audience that is slowly running out of patience but not yet out of hope.

Bread and Circus: The Oldest Game in the World.

The Roman Empire understood something that modern governments have simply digitized and scaled: keep the population fed enough not to revolt, and distracted enough not to think clearly.

The circus today is magnificent. The FIFA World Cup commands billions of eyeballs. American political theatre functions as a global reality show. Social media delivers outrage in perfectly engineered dopamine loops.

Meanwhile, in Ireland, the cost of housing, healthcare, alcohol, and electricity has made it the most expensive country in the European Union.

In the Netherlands, the average home price has risen 4.4% to €487,383.

Dutch variable energy bills are set to rise by more than 10% in some cases from July 1st.

The Fed, Inflation, and the Art of Moving the Goalposts.

In the United States, the newly confirmed Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh says that inflation being at its worst in three years is “not the full story.” He prefers “trimmed mean averages” alternative inflation gauges that strip out extreme price movements.

When the numbers look bad, you change the method of measurement. This is not new governments and central banks have been quietly adjusting how inflation, unemployment, and growth are calculated for decades. Each adjustment, coincidentally, tends to make the situation look marginally more manageable than it actually feels to the person standing in a supermarket aisle.

You are welcome to believe the new metric. The question worth asking is simple: does your salary reflect the inflation you actually experience at the petrol pump, at the checkout, on your energy bill or does it reflect the inflation the government officially acknowledges?

The Only Question That Actually Matters.

Does your wage keep pace with the inflation you actually live with not the official rate, not the trimmed average, not the seasonally adjusted headline figure but the real, daily, grinding cost of being alive in 2026?

For most people, the honest answer is no.

And no election, no new prime minister, no Fed chairman, no peace memorandum, no victory declaration, and no World Cup final will change that arithmetic.

The game is not rigged because the people running it are evil. It is rigged because the incentives of political survival are perfectly aligned against the kind of honest, painful decision-making that would actually help you. Politicians optimize for the next election. Central bankers optimize for market stability. Media companies optimize for engagement.

None of those incentives include your grocery bill.

So allocate your energy accordingly. Build something real. Understand the system for what it is. And stop waiting for someone on a stage to rescue you from it.

I have read hundreds of Substacks.

Some have beautiful design, perfect grammar, professional photography. And they feel completely empty.

Others are raw. Imperfect. Sometimes even grammatically messy. And they pull you in like gravity.

The difference is never the content.

The difference is always the person behind the content.

When someone writes from a place of genuine experience, not curated experience, but real experience something transfers through the words. A frequency. A truth that the reader’s body recognises before their mind processes it.

This is what I mean by energy.

The problem with most writers.

Most people who start writing online are performing.

Performing expertise they’re not sure they have. Performing confidence they don’t quite feel. Performing a version of themselves that seems more acceptable, more polished, more likely to be approved of.

I understand this deeply.

I spent decades performing compliance. Performing agreement with systems I didn’t believe in. Performing gratitude for freedoms that weren’t really freedoms.

When I started writing on Substack in February, I made one decision that changed everything:

I would write exactly what I think. Without softening it. Without making it more palatable. Without worrying whether it would be approved of. Not because I wanted to be provocative. Because I was tired of performing.

What happens when you stop performing.

Something strange happens when you write without a mask. The people who resonate with you, really resonate find you faster. Not because the algorithm rewards authenticity. But because authentic energy travels differently than performed energy. It spreads person to person. Not because it’s viral. But because it’s true.

When someone reads something that matches what they have always felt but never seen articulated, they don’t just like it. They send it to the specific person in their life who needs to read it. They don’t just restack it. They write a comment that feels like a confession.

Here is what I have learned:

Energy does not come from inspiration. It does not come from discipline. It does not even come from passion.

When what you write matches what you actually believe, when your public voice and your private thoughts are the same voice, there is no friction. No performance tax. No exhaustion from maintaining a persona. You simply say the thing. And the thing lands.

This is why I can write two articles a week and two notes every day without burning out. Not because I have exceptional discipline. But because I am not managing a gap between who I am and who I am pretending to be.

That gap is what exhausts people.

Close the gap. The energy appears.

What this means for you.

If your Substack feels like work, not good work, not meaningful work, but draining work, I want to ask you one question:

Are you writing what you actually think? Or are you writing what you think people want to read?

Because there is a feeling that comes with performing. A specific kind of tiredness that has nothing to do with how many hours you worked. It is the tiredness of maintaining a gap between who you are and who you are pretending to be. I know that feeling intimately.

I carried it for decades.

And I can tell you with certainty, no amount of tactical improvement fixes it. Better headlines don’t fix it. Prettier design doesn’t fix it. Posting more consistently doesn’t fix it.

The only thing that fixes it is closing the gap.

So here is what I want you to actually do. Not think about. Do.

Open a blank document. Not Substack. Just a blank document that nobody will ever see.

Write the thing you have been afraid to publish.

The opinion that feels too strong. The experience that feels too personal. The observation that feels too controversial. The truth that feels too raw.

Write it completely. Don’t edit it. Don’t soften it.

Then read it back.

That feeling you get reading it, that slight anxiety mixed with recognition that is your energy. That is the thing your readers are waiting for. That is what has been missing.

Readers are not looking for perfect content. The internet is drowning in perfect content. Optimized, polished, strategically constructed perfect content that feels like it was written by nobody for nobody. What readers are desperately looking for and will immediately recognise when they find it is a real human being. Someone who has actually lived something. Someone who has actually changed. Someone who writes like they have nothing to prove and nothing to hide.

In a world where everything is increasingly artificial, every image, every voice, every piece of content potentially generated by a machine, the most radical thing you can do on Substack is simply be human.

Completely. Unapologetically. Consistently.

And here is something worth saying directly:

If you are between 20 and 30, you have a gift that you probably don’t recognise yet.

Time.

You can experiment freely. Write in five different voices. Try ten different topics. Publish things that don’t work. Change direction completely. Nobody expects you to have it figured out yet and that freedom is extraordinarily valuable if you use it consciously. The writers who find their ideal style fastest are not the most talented. They are the ones who experiment the most without quitting. Every article that doesn’t land teaches you something the successful ones never could.

Be patient with the process. Impatient with the excuses.

Your style is in there. Experimentation is simply how you excavate it.

If you are 40 or older, you have something completely different. And in many ways more powerful.

You have lived through things.

Decades of decisions, mistakes, reinventions, losses, and hard-won clarity that a 25-year-old cannot manufacture no matter how talented they are.

That is not a disadvantage on Substack. That is your entire competitive edge. The internet is full of young voices with energy and ambition. It is starving for older voices with depth. People who have actually navigated career transitions, relationship complexity, financial reality, identity shifts, and the particular kind of wisdom that only comes from having been wrong about important things for long enough to know better.

Your life experience is not backstory.

It is the product.

Every year you have lived is leverage. Every system you have questioned. Every thing you unlearned. Every version of yourself you left behind.

Use it all. Hold nothing back.

Because the reader who needs what only you can write, at exactly the age you are, with exactly the history you carry is already out there looking for you.

The final thought.

I grew up where energy was managed.

I spent my adult life getting it back.

Now I put it into everything I write.

That is the only secret. There never was another one.

They’re Not Innovating. They’re Preparing.

When Japan’s three megabanks announced live stablecoin transactions by 2027, and leading U.S. banks quietly joined forces on tokenization networks, the financial press celebrated it as progress. Innovation. Modernization. Banks finally embracing the blockchain revolution.

Don’t be fooled.

This isn’t innovation. This is architecture. And what’s being built isn’t for your convenience, it’s for your containment.

First, Let’s Speak Plainly: What These Things Actually Are:

Before the analysis, the definitions. Because the financial industry buries its most important moves inside technical language that most people never stop to decode.

A stablecoin is a digital currency that lives on a blockchain but is pegged one-to-one to a traditional currency. One dollar stablecoin equals one dollar. One euro stablecoin equals one euro. It moves with the speed and programmability of crypto but maintains the value of fiat money.

That sounds useful. And technically it is. But here is what that definition quietly contains: a stablecoin is still the dollar. It is still the euro. It inherits every weakness, every debasement, every inflationary pressure of the currency it’s pegged to and adds a programmable, freezable digital layer on top.

You haven’t escaped the sinking ship. You’ve just moved to a cabin where the doors lock from the outside.

Tokenization is the process of converting real world assets into digital tokens on a blockchain. Your bank deposit becomes a token. A government bond becomes a token. Property, stocks, commodities, anything of value can be represented as a programmable digital unit on a blockchain infrastructure. The financial industry frames this as efficiency. What it actually means is that your wealth, your savings, your assets, your financial life migrates from the physical and legal world into a digital environment controlled by whoever runs the underlying infrastructure.

When everything you own is a token on someone else’s blockchain, everything you own is subject to someone else’s rules.

That is not a technical footnote. That is the entire point.

The Simplest Test You Can Apply.

When something is working, nobody experiments with replacing it.

Nobody redesigns a bridge that isn’t cracking. Nobody rewrites a contract that’s being honored. Nobody builds a parallel payment system when the existing one commands genuine confidence.

If fiat currency the dollar, the euro, the yen was truly strong, truly trusted, truly built on solid foundations, there would be no stablecoin experiments. No tokenization networks. No urgent CBDC pilots running simultaneously across dozens of countries.

The experimentation itself is the confession.

Every bank that launches a stablecoin is admitting, in the language of action rather than words, that the currency it’s built on needs a technological rescue. Every central bank rushing to digitize its money is acknowledging that confidence in the analog version is eroding faster than they can publicly admit.

Strong money doesn’t need reinvention. The dollar dominated global trade for eighty years on trust alone. No blockchain. No tokenization. No programmable rails. Just confidence.

That confidence is gone. The experiments are the cracks. And the cracks are spreading.

The System Is Already Broken.

Let’s start with what nobody in a suit on Bloomberg wants to say plainly.

Consumer inflation is back at 4.2%, its highest since 2023. Global debt is at levels that have no historical precedent. Central banks spent fifteen years printing money, suppressing interest rates, and inflating asset bubbles to keep the machinery running. Now they’re trapped. Raise rates and the debt markets implode. Keep them low and inflation devours purchasing power.

There is no clean exit from this. The math doesn’t allow it.

Strong currencies don’t need reinvention. The dollar dominated global trade for eighty years on confidence and network effects alone, no blockchain required. The euro, the yen, the pound none of them needed a technological overhaul when they were functioning as intended.

So ask yourself a simple question: why now?

Why are the world’s most powerful financial institutions simultaneously, urgently, building parallel payment infrastructures on blockchain rails? Why the sudden obsession with stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and CBDCs?

Because they can see what’s coming. And they’re building the lifeboat before the ship goes down, making sure they control who gets on it.

Crypto Scared Them Into Action.

Bitcoin crossing $60,000 wasn’t just a price event. It was a political signal. Millions of ordinary people were voluntarily moving their savings outside the traditional banking system. Then Libra, Facebook’s proposed global stablecoin nearly gave a private corporation monetary reach comparable to a mid-sized nation.

That panicked regulators in a way that nothing had in decades.

Within months, central bank CBDC research accelerated globally. The BIS began publishing frameworks. Governments that had dismissed crypto as a toy suddenly needed their own digital currency answer.

This was not innovation driven by opportunity. It was defense driven by fear.

And institutions that are genuinely confident in their currency’s future don’t respond to a decentralized experiment with a decade-long infrastructure buildout. They ignore it. The fact that they couldn’t ignore it tells you everything about the underlying confidence levels.

Stablecoins Are Not What They Appear.

The official narrative frames stablecoins as convenient, efficient, modern. A technical upgrade to clunky payment rails. Faster cross-border transfers. Financial inclusion for the unbanked.

These are real features. They’re also perfect cover.

What a bank-issued stablecoin actually represents is the same depreciating asset in a more controllable wrapper. A yen stablecoin still loses purchasing power at the same rate as the yen. A dollar token still reflects the dollar’s underlying fundamentals. The blockchain doesn’t fix the debasement, it just adds a surveillance and control layer on top of it.

Tokenization follows the same logic. When your deposits, assets, and transactions exist as tokens on a permissioned blockchain controlled by a central authority, you haven’t gained anything in terms of monetary stability. You’ve simply moved into a system where every financial decision you make is permanently recorded, analysable, and crucially reversible by those with administrative access.

Think of it this way. A tokenized dollar deposit is still a dollar deposit. A tokenized bond is still a bond. Tokenization doesn’t change what something is worth, it changes who controls access to it. And control of access, at scale, across an entire economy, is the most powerful financial lever ever built.

They Call It Money. It’s Actually Worse Than Crypto.

Here is something the financial press will never say clearly, so let’s say it plainly.

Commercial banks can issue stablecoins. JPMorgan already has JPM Coin. Japan’s megabanks are building theirs right now. And when a commercial bank issues a stablecoin and calls it money, what they have actually created is something that looks like crypto on the surface but is the exact opposite in every way that matters.

Bitcoin and Ethereum whatever their flaws were built with specific properties that make them genuinely resistant to institutional control. There is no single issuer. There is no administrator with override access. There is no company behind it that a government can pressure with a phone call. You hold your own keys. Nobody can freeze it. Nobody can rewrite the rules overnight. The decentralization is structural, not cosmetic.

A commercial bank stablecoin has none of that.

It is issued by a private corporation. It runs on infrastructure they own. The smart contracts were written by their engineers and can be rewritten by their engineers. The terms of service are theirs to change. The freeze function exists and works instantly at the bank’s discretion, or at the request of any government agency that sends them a letter on official letterhead.

What gets called innovation is actually a carefully constructed illusion. The banks watched crypto threaten their control, studied exactly what made it dangerous to them, the decentralization, the self custody, the censorship resistance and then built something that mimics the aesthetic of crypto while eliminating every property that made crypto genuinely free.

They took the visual language of financial liberation and built a surveillance and control instrument inside it.

The cage inside the cage.

With government CBDCs you have one layer of control, the state. With commercial bank stablecoins operating inside a regulated CBDC framework, you have two. The government above setting the rules. The commercial bank in the middle enforcing and extending them. And you at the bottom holding a token that both can program, restrict, freeze, or revoke.

It is not one cage. It is a cage inside a cage.

A Bitcoin in your own wallet answers to nobody on earth.

A JPMorgan stablecoin answers to JPMorgan, the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, the SEC, and any three-letter agency that decides your transaction history looks interesting.

They will call it money. They will call it modern. They will call it safe.

What it actually is stripped of the branding and the press releases and the innovation narrative is the most complete financial control instrument ever built, handed voluntarily to the institutions that benefit most from controlling you, and normalized so gradually that most people will never notice the moment they lost the last exit.

Crypto was invented to escape the bank. The bank just built its “own crypto”.

That is not progress. That is conquest dressed in the clothes of the thing it defeated.

The Float Is the Business Model.

There’s a detail buried in a recent Forbes headline that most readers will skim past: “Every major bank is going to launch a stablecoin.” Not some banks. Not a few experimenting at the edges. Every major bank.

When an entire industry moves in lockstep toward the same product simultaneously, it’s worth asking what they all see that the public doesn’t.

The answer is simple, and it’s been the foundation of banking for centuries: the float.

How the float works.

When you deposit a dollar with a bank, that dollar doesn’t sit in a vault waiting for you. The bank puts it to work, loans, Treasury bills, short-term investments and earns a return on it. You get little or nothing. The bank keeps the spread. This is not new. This is the entire history of banking.

What’s new is the wrapper.

A 1:1 backed stablecoin works the same way. You hand over a dollar, you receive a token worth exactly one dollar. The bank takes your dollar and parks it in Treasury bills currently yielding somewhere around 4 to 5 percent. You hold a token that pays you nothing. The bank pockets the yield, at scale, across millions of token holders, for as long as those tokens remain in circulation.

Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer in the world has demonstrated exactly how lucrative this is, generating billions in profit primarily from interest earned on reserves backing a token that pays its holders zero. That model, run by a single offshore company, has been one of the most profitable operations in modern finance relative to its size.

Now imagine that model run not by one company, but by every major bank on earth, simultaneously, with regulatory blessing, marketed as the future of money.

This is not money creation. It’s something subtler.

It’s important to be precise here, because overstating this argument gives critics an easy target. A genuinely 1:1 backed stablecoin does not create new money out of thin air the way central bank policy does. The dollar you put in is the dollar that sits in reserve.

But here’s what it does do: it takes dollars that would otherwise sit in low-yield consumer accounts or under a mattress, or in cash and funnels them into a system where the yield on that money flows upward to institutions, while the holder gets nothing but a programmable, freezable token.

This is wealth extraction through a side door. Quiet, technical, and dressed in the language of innovation.

Who can run this business? Not you.

Here is the asymmetry that matters most.

Technically, issuing a token is trivial. Anyone with basic blockchain knowledge can create one. But issuing a token that millions of people will trust, hold, and transact with one that functions as money in the real economy requires something only a handful of institutions can obtain: a banking license, regulatory approval, reserve custody arrangements, and the implicit backing of the financial system itself.

This is not a technology gap. It’s a permission gap.

The infrastructure of trust, the thing that makes a stablecoin usable as money rather than just a speculative token is gatekept entirely by the same institutions that already dominate the existing financial system. Crypto’s original promise was to remove that gatekeeping. What’s happening now is the gatekeepers building their own version of the thing that was supposed to make them obsolete, and keeping every structural advantage for themselves.

The quiet enabler of debasement.

There’s one more layer worth understanding, and it connects directly back to the debasement story.

If every major bank is issuing stablecoins backed by Treasury bills, that creates a permanent, growing, built-in source of demand for government debt. Every dollar that flows into a bank stablecoin is, in effect, a dollar that may end up parked in T-bills backing that token.

This doesn’t directly print money. But it does something almost as significant: it makes it easier and cheaper for governments to keep issuing debt, because there’s now a structural buyer that didn’t exist before, absorbing supply at scale. And easier government borrowing is precisely the mechanism that allows deficits to grow, which is precisely the mechanism that drives the currency debasement ordinary people experience as inflation.

So the chain runs like this: banks issue stablecoins, banks earn the float on Treasury-backed reserves, governments get an easier path to finance deficits, deficits drive debasement, and the person holding the stablecoin, earning nothing, taking on freeze risk, taking on programmability risk, ends up financing the very erosion of the currency their token is denominated in.

They hold a dollar token. The dollar buys less every year. And somewhere upstream, a bank is earning yield on the float of that exact token, profiting from a system the token holder is simultaneously funding and being devalued by.

Every major bank launching a stablecoin isn’t a story about technological adoption. It’s a story about an industry recognizing a new, regulator-approved method of extracting yield from the public’s money, at a moment when interest rates make that yield unusually large, using infrastructure dressed up in language,blockchain, tokens, digital assets that makes the underlying mechanism unrecognisable to the people it’s extracting from.

Average Mary and Joe deposit a dollar. Gets a token worth a dollar. Earns nothing.

The bank takes that dollar, earns four to five percent, year after year, across millions of accounts.

That is not innovation. That is the float, rebranded, scaled, and handed a permission slip that nobody outside the banking system will ever receive.

The Control Layer Is Not a Bug. It’s the Point.

Here is where we need to be precise, because this is where serious analysis gets dismissed as conspiracy.

The technical capabilities being built into CBDC and tokenized money systems include things that physical cash has never had:

Programmable expiry dates, money that must be spent by a certain time, preventing saving

Categorical spending restrictions, tokens that can only be used for approved purchases

Geographic limitations, money that doesn’t work outside designated areas

Instant account freezing, at scale, without judicial process

Complete transaction surveillance, every purchase, every transfer, permanently logged

These are not hypothetical capabilities dreamed up by paranoid critics. They are documented features discussed openly in central bank policy papers, BIS working groups, and academic literature on CBDC design. The Chinese digital yuan is already piloting several of them.

Canada in 2022 offered a preview using existing banking rails when truckers protested government mandates, accounts were frozen within days, without court orders, at the government’s request. It worked. It was legal. And it demonstrated exactly what becomes possible when a population has no access to cash or assets outside the banking system.

Blockchain doesn’t change that dynamic. It systematizes and scales it.

If You Can’t Hold It, You Don’t Own It.

This is the point most people don’t fully confront until it’s too late.

Everything that exists only on a screen, your bank balance, your digital wallet, your tokenized assets, your stablecoin holdings, exists entirely at the pleasure of whoever controls the infrastructure behind that screen. It is not yours in any meaningful sense. It is a number in someone else’s database, subject to someone else’s rules, reversible by someone else’s decision.

Gold doesn’t work that way. Physical silver doesn’t work that way. Land doesn’t work that way. Things you can hold, store, and physically possess cannot be frozen with a software command. They cannot be limited by a policy update. They cannot be confiscated remotely at 3am while you sleep. They cannot simply be made to disappear by an administrator clicking a button in a server room somewhere.

This distinction between what you hold and what you’re merely permitted to access is about to become the most important financial concept of this generation.

When the Canadian government froze protesters’ accounts in 2022, it happened in days. No court order. No warning. Perfectly legal under emergency powers. Those people’s savings didn’t disappear, they simply became inaccessible, which in practical terms is the same thing. Now imagine that capability applied not to hundreds of accounts using existing banking rails, but to millions of accounts on a purpose-built programmable monetary system specifically designed to enable exactly that outcome.

Your number on a screen is only yours until someone decides it isn’t.

Gold in your hand is yours absolutely. That is not a small difference. That is the entire difference.

The financial system being built right now is specifically architected to ensure that everyone’s wealth exists only as numbers on screens, controllable, programmable, freezable, limitable, and ultimately revocable screens. The elimination of physical cash, the discouragement of hard assets, the push toward fully digital portfolios, these are not separate trends. They are a coordinated migration of human wealth from the physical world, where it cannot be controlled, into the digital world, where it can be controlled completely.

Every financial advisor who tells you gold is old fashioned is knowingly or not nudging you deeper into the cage.

Every policy that makes cash transactions inconvenient is closing an exit.

Every headline celebrating the convenience of digital payments is normalizing a system where convenience and control are two sides of the same coin.

If you don’t hold something tangible, something physical, something that exists in the real world independent of any server, any platform, any institution, any government then what you have is not wealth. It is a permission. And permissions can be revoked.

Bretton Woods Didn’t Collapse Overnight.

History never announces the transition. It just quietly builds it.

Before Nixon closed the gold window in 1971, the framework for what would replace Bretton Woods floating exchange rates, the petrodollar system, IMF structural adjustment mechanisms was already conceptually developed. The collapse looked sudden. The replacement looked improvised. Neither was true.

We are living through the same pattern.

The current monetary system, debt-based, central bank managed, dollar-dominated is approaching its structural limits. The people who built it and who run it are not blind to this. They are not going to announce a crisis and ask for your patience. They are going to maintain confidence in the current system until the replacement is ready, then manage the transition in a way that preserves their position within the new architecture.

The blockchain infrastructure being built today, the stablecoins, the tokenized deposits, the CBDCs is the replacement architecture. It is being tested, refined, and quietly normalized while the existing system buys whatever time it has left.

When the transition comes, it won’t feel like a collapse. It will be packaged as a solution.

The Disappearance of Cash Is Not Incidental.

Every policy nudge toward digital payments, every withdrawal limit, every merchant that stops accepting cash, every country that phases out large denomination notes, these are not isolated convenience decisions.

Cash is anonymous. Cash cannot be programmed. Cash cannot be frozen remotely. Cash has no expiry date. Cash does not report your purchases to anyone.

In a fully tokenized monetary system, cash is the only remaining exit. And exits are being closed, quietly, one policy at a time, framed always in terms of convenience, efficiency, anti-money laundering, and tax compliance.

By the time most people notice, the exit will be gone.

What This Means For You.

This is not an argument to panic. It is an argument to pay attention to what is actually being built, not what it is being called.

When you see headlines about stablecoins and tokenization framed as innovation, ask who controls the infrastructure. When you see CBDC pilots framed as financial inclusion, ask what the programmable features are. When you see cash being phased out framed as modernization, ask what you lose with it.

The technology itself is neutral. Blockchain can enable genuine financial freedom, it was literally invented to do that. But the blockchain being built by central banks and megabanks is not Bitcoin. It is a permissioned, surveilled, administrator-controlled system that uses the language of decentralization while maintaining every lever of centralized control.

The next monetary system is being built right now, in plain sight, announced in press releases that almost nobody reads carefully.

The cage is being constructed while everyone debates the bars.

The Honest Conclusion.

You don’t have to believe in grand conspiracy to see this clearly. You just have to watch what institutions do rather than what they say.

Strong currencies don’t need blockchain upgrades. Confident governments don’t rush to build digital surveillance money. Banks that trust the system don’t hedge it with parallel infrastructure.

If fiat money was genuinely strong, if the dollar, euro, and yen commanded the confidence their institutions claim, none of this would exist. There would be no stablecoin pilots, no tokenization networks, no emergency CBDC programs running in parallel across every major economy simultaneously. You don’t experiment with replacing something that works. You don’t build a new foundation under a house that isn’t sinking.

The experiments are not ambition. They are anxiety made visible.

And anxiety at this scale, from institutions this powerful, about money this fundamental, that is not a minor signal. That is the sound of cracks forming in something that hundreds of millions of people are still being told is solid.

They know.

They’re preparing.

The only question is whether the rest of us are paying attention before the transition is complete.

The Real Cost of Raising a Critical Thinker Child: And Why Nobody Warns You.

A letter to every parent who looked at their child and thought: I’m proud and terrified at the same time.

There’s a particular kind of silence that follows a conversation with your child when they say something that makes you question everything you thought you knew about parenting well.

My daughter is 15. She decided she’s done with the conventional education path. Not out of laziness, out of something far more unsettling to a parent: clarity. She knows what she wants. She wants to learn, create, fail, adjust, and do it on her own terms. She protects her energy like it’s a finite resource, because she understands at 15 that it actually is.

I’m proud of her. Genuinely, deeply proud.

And I’m scared in a way I didn’t expect.

The Wake-Up Call Nobody Tells You About.

Here’s the thing about raising a critical thinker. Everyone celebrates the idea of it. Raise children who question things. Raise independent minds. Don’t just produce obedient little workers.

What they don’t tell you is what it actually costs. Not financially though that too but in the quieter, more complicated currencies of parenting.

It costs you the comfort of the script.

When your child follows the conventional path, there’s a map. School, grades, friends, university or trade, first job. You can be worried about the details, the grades, the friendships, the choices but you always know roughly where you are on the map.

When you raise a critical thinker who has decided the map is wrong, you are both navigating without one. And some days that feels like freedom. Other days it feels like standing at the edge of something very large in the dark.

What “She Questions Everything” Actually Looks Like in Real Life.

The reality is more uncomfortable.

It looks like your daughter questioning why she should spend eight hours a day in an institution that wasn’t designed with her in mind, and you not having a good answer. Not a truly honest one.

It looks like her seeing through social performance the way adults perform certainty they don’t have, the way institutions perform authority they haven’t fully earned and coming to you with that observation, and you having to decide: do I defend the system, or do I honour what she’s actually seeing?

It looks like her opting out of things that “everyone does” not dramatically, not with rebellion, but quietly, with reasoning. And her reasoning is often better than the social expectation she’s refusing.

And here’s the cost buried in all of that: you cannot be intellectually dishonest with this child. She will notice. She will remember. And more importantly, she will lose something important her trust in your perception of reality, if you perform conviction you don’t have.

That’s a high standard to hold yourself to every single day.

The Introvert Tax.

She stays home. She guards her peace. She invests her energy carefully, deliberately, into things that matter to her. Multiple hobbies, deep interests, a rich interior world.

This looks like wisdom because it is.

But here’s the cost nobody mentions: the world is not built for this person, and you know it.

The world rewards extroversion, performance, visibility, networking, showing up even when it’s hollow, saying yes even when no is the more intelligent answer. Your daughter has already, at 15, identified this and quietly refused to participate in the theatre of it.

She will be misread. Constantly. She will be called antisocial when she is actually selective. She will be called unmotivated when she is actually self-directed. She will be called strange when she is actually just not optimising for other people’s comfort.

And you will watch this happen, and the cost is that you cannot protect her from it. The best you can do is make sure she never internalises someone else’s misreading of her as the truth.

“I’m Different” — And Why That Sentence Is a Turning Point.

When a teenager discovers they are different, there are two paths that open up.

One leads to shame. To the exhausting performance of fitting in. To slowly sanding down the parts of yourself that make other people uncomfortable, until one day in your thirties you look in the mirror and don’t quite recognise the person who came so cheap.

The other leads to integration. To understanding that different isn’t broken. To building a life around your actual nature rather than against it.

The distance between those two paths is largely determined by one thing: whether the adults closest to them reflected back the right story.

Not you’re perfect, nothing needs to change, that’s not honesty, and she’ll see through it anyway.

But: who you are makes sense. Your way of moving through the world is legitimate. The fact that it doesn’t match the default template is the template’s limitation, not yours.

The cost here is that you have to genuinely believe this not perform it. A critical thinker knows the difference.

She Already Knows the Price. That’s the Part That Gets Me.

There’s something that stops you mid-sentence when your child looks at you and says, without drama, without self-pity: I know it will be harder for me to find my people.

Not as a complaint. As a fact she has already processed and accepted.

She knows that people like her genuinely self-directed, deeply interior, unwilling to perform enthusiasm they don’t feel are not common. Not because something is wrong with them, but because the world selects against that type early and consistently. School selects against it. Social media selects against it. Most workplaces select against it. The entire architecture of modern social life is optimised for people who are comfortable performing a version of themselves for an audience.

She doesn’t want to do that. And she already understands the invoice that comes with that refusal.

She will face more rejection. Not because she is less but because she is more specific. And specific things fit fewer spaces. A skeleton key opens everything and means nothing. The key cut for one particular door is harder to use, and worth far more to the right lock.

She knows this. At 15.

Refusal Is Going to Be a Recurring Character in Her Story.

Let me say this plainly because it deserves to be said without softening: she will hear no more than most people. She will be passed over for things that reward performance over substance. She will apply for things, opportunities, communities, relationships where the person deciding doesn’t have the range to recognise what she’s offering.

That’s not pessimism. That’s the honest arithmetic of living unconventionally.

The conventional path is, among other things, a rejection-reduction strategy. Follow the expected route, speak the expected language, hit the expected milestones and the world largely leaves you alone. Acceptance is relatively automatic. You belong by default.

When you opt out of that, you opt into a different relationship with rejection. More frequent. More personal. Because now you’re not being filtered by a system, you’re being evaluated as an actual specific human being, and not everyone will have the capacity to see that clearly.

The mental strength this requires is not the loud, performative resilience you see celebrated online. It’s quieter and harder than that. It’s the ability to receive a no, feel it fully, not let it rewrite the story you hold about yourself, and then continue. Again. And again. Without becoming bitter. Without closing off. Without deciding that the answer is to become more like what the world finds easy to accept.

That is extraordinarily hard. And she is going to have to build that muscle in real conditions, with real losses, in real time.

But Here’s What She Understands That Most Adults Have Forgotten.

A meaningful life and a comfortable life are not the same thing. They overlap sometimes, but they are not the same thing, and optimising for one usually costs you ground on the other.

The comfortable life minimises friction. Says yes to what’s expected. Keeps its real self in a drawer for the weekend, or retirement, or some future moment that keeps receding. It is not a bad life. But it is a life lived at a certain distance from yourself.

The meaningful life the one built on your own terms, your own rules, your own actual nature is full of friction. Full of moments where the world doesn’t accommodate you and you have to decide whether to accommodate it instead, or hold the line. Full of relationships that had to be found rather than inherited from proximity. Full of work that had to be invented rather than slotted into.

It is harder. It is also and this is the part that doesn’t fit on a motivational poster not guaranteed to feel worth it every day. There will be days it feels like loneliness rather than freedom. Like stubbornness rather than integrity. Like being lost rather than being self-directed.

And you have to be strong enough mentally, emotionally, philosophically to hold your own story steady on those days. To know the difference between a hard patch and a wrong path. To not let a difficult season talk you into a smaller life.

She knows this. She is preparing for this. That is what the peace-protecting, the energy-guarding, the careful selectivity is actually about. She is not hiding. She is building.

On Your Terms, On Your Rules: But What Does That Actually Mean?

It doesn’t mean without consequences. It doesn’t mean without compromise. It doesn’t mean the world will rearrange itself out of respect for your authenticity.

It means you are the author. Not the only force in the story, the world will write chapters you didn’t plan but the author. The one who decides what the story is about. What it’s for. What counts as a win. What counts as a failure. What’s worth the cost and what isn’t.

Most people outsource that authorship. To their parents’ expectations. To their culture’s defaults. To the metrics their industry uses. To the approval of people they don’t even particularly respect. They spend their whole lives living inside a story someone else sketched out, wondering at intervals why it doesn’t quite fit.

She is refusing to outsource it. At 15.

That is going to cost her things. Real things. And it is going to give her things that cannot be bought or awarded or handed to her by any institution.

The life that fits. The relationships that are real. The work that is actually hers. The knowledge not the belief, the knowledge that the way she is moving through the world is genuinely her own.

That’s what on your terms means. Not easy. Honest.

And honest, in the long run, is the only thing that holds.

The Concerns That Are Real and Should Be Named.

Let me be honest about the doubts, because they deserve to be named rather than hidden.

Isolation. Not the chosen, healthy solitude she currently enjoys but the risk that the circle never widens. That the introversion calcifies into avoidance. That she builds a world so tailored to her preferences that she loses the tolerance for friction that real life, real relationships, real creative work all require.

The skills gap. Self-directed learning is powerful. It’s also genuinely hard. Without structure, the risk isn’t that she learns nothing, it’s that she learns only what’s already comfortable, only what she’s already drawn to. The uncomfortable knowledge, the technical discipline, the things that require grinding through resistance those are easier to avoid when no one’s requiring them.

The credential wall. We can argue all day about whether credentials reflect real competence. But there are doors specific, important doors that remain credential-locked regardless of what we think about it. Medicine. Law. Certain sciences. And some of those doors take years to unlock, years she might not have if she decides at 22 that she wants to walk through one of them.

Socialisation is a skill, not just a preference. She socialises from time to time, on her own terms, good. But the capacity to navigate people you didn’t choose, in contexts you didn’t design, is a skill that atrophies without practice. The world will ask this of her. It always does.

You. The cost that is hardest to say out loud. What happens to her path if your circumstances change? If you get ill? If money tightens? The conventional path, for all its flaws, is somewhat self-sustaining. This path depends heavily on a stable, supportive environment. That’s not a reason to abandon the path. It’s a reason to build contingencies into it, carefully and honestly.

Why This Is Scary — The Real Answer.

It’s scary because you are responsible for a person who is already, in some meaningful ways, more clear-eyed than the system you were handed to raise her with.

It’s scary because the validation won’t come on a normal schedule. There’s no report card for this. No graduation ceremony. No external authority saying yes, you did it right. You will be waiting a long time, possibly forever, for the world to confirm that this was the correct choice because the world doesn’t give that confirmation to unconventional paths until those paths have already succeeded, and sometimes not even then.

It’s scary because love and good intentions are not sufficient. You have to actually know things. About learning. About psychology. About what self-direction requires practically. About when to intervene and when to trust. About the difference between a phase and a direction. About yourself, your own fears, your own unresolved relationship with convention, your own need for her to be okay so that you can feel like you did it right.

It’s scary because she is watching how you handle your own uncertainty. And critical thinkers notice when adults pretend to be more certain than they are.

What You Actually Have.

You have a 15-year-old who knows who she is.

Do you understand how rare that is? Most adults spend their thirties and forties trying to recover the self-knowledge they had at 15 before the world talked them out of it.

You have a daughter who has already learned to distinguish between what she genuinely wants and what she’s supposed to want. That skill, that specific, hard-won, quietly radical skill is worth more than most qualifications.

You have a relationship honest enough that she talks to you. That she brings you the conversations that keep you both up at night. That she trusts you with her real thinking, not just the version of herself she thinks you want to see.

That’s not a small thing. That’s actually the whole thing.

The Only Honest Ending.

There is no resolution to this essay, because there is no resolution to this situation. Not yet. Maybe not for a long time.

What there is: a parent who is paying attention. A child who is paying attention. A conversation that was honest enough to produce real doubt and real doubt is always closer to real wisdom than comfortable certainty.

The cost of raising a critical thinker is that you have to become one too.

What actually happened? Israel and Iran exchanged direct strikes. Analysts warned of a return to full-scale regional war. Then, within hours, the tone shifted. Iran declared the end of military operations. Trump appeared on social media taking credit. Oil dropped. The Dow climbed. And by the following morning, financial journalists were writing about Wall Street’s resilience rather than the hundreds of thousands of lives hanging in the balance across the Middle East.

This is not journalism. This is choreography.

The SpaceX IPO: The Vacuum Cleaner Pointed at Your Portfolio.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room that most financial commentators are tiptoeing around: the SpaceX IPO.

Elon Musk’s space company is planning what is being described as the biggest stock market launch in history. The explainer headlines are already appearing “how can I buy shares, and what are the risks?” framed helpfully for retail investors who are being quietly shepherded toward the exit of every other position they hold.

Here is the danger that nobody is saying plainly enough: a listing of this scale does not create new money. It redistributes existing money.

When SpaceX goes public at a valuation that will likely dwarf anything seen before, the capital that flows into it has to come from somewhere. Pension funds will rebalance. Retail investors will sell other holdings. Institutional money will rotate. The sheer gravitational pull of a multi-hundred-billion-dollar IPO acts like a vacuum cleaner running across the entire market sucking liquidity from small caps, tech stocks, emerging markets, and anywhere else investors currently have money parked.

We have seen this before. Not at this scale, but the mechanics are identical. Saudi Aramco’s IPO in 2019 drained significant capital from regional markets. Facebook’s 2012 listing caused a measurable rotation out of other tech names in the weeks surrounding it. The bigger the IPO, the bigger the displacement.

SpaceX is in a different category entirely. If the valuation comes in where many expect north of $300 to $400 billion the market distortion could be severe. And it arrives at precisely the wrong moment: when geopolitical risk is elevated, when central banks are pulling in opposite directions, and when retail investors are already stretched thin from years of volatility.

The experts quoted in the coverage have “flagged potential downsides.” That is an extraordinarily polite way of describing what could be a significant market dislocation event. Watch what happens to your other holdings in the weeks surrounding the SpaceX listing. The answer may be unpleasant.

The Interest Rate Contradiction Nobody Wants to Talk About.

Here is perhaps the most revealing economic absurdity of this moment: the Eurozone is preparing to raise interest rates in response to the energy shock unleashed by the US-Israel strikes on Iran, while simultaneously Donald Trump is publicly pressuring his Federal Reserve pick Kevin Warsh to cut rates.

The ECB wants to stamp out the fastest eurozone inflation since 2023. Frankfurt officials are responding to an energy price shock that is directly linked to Middle East military action the same military action that Trump’s administration was involved in triggering.

The irony is almost too neat: America helps start a war, Europe pays higher energy prices as a result, and then Europe’s central bank has to raise borrowing costs on its own citizens to contain the inflation that war created.

Trump, meanwhile, wants cheap money. He is raising the stakes for his central bank pick, publicly demanding rate cuts even as market expectations grow that borrowing costs will rise. This is not a subtle difference of economic opinion. This is a sitting president attempting to override the independent judgment of the institution responsible for the world’s reserve currency, in real time, on social media.

Two of the world’s most powerful economic blocs are pulling in completely opposite directions and financial media covers each story in isolation, as though they exist in separate universes. They don’t. Capital flows. Currency wars are real. When the Fed cuts and the ECB hikes, the dollar weakens against the euro, European exports become less competitive, and the whole fragile architecture of global trade shifts under everyone’s feet without most people noticing until the damage is already done.

Gold was already falling 3% on robust US jobs data cementing bets on higher rates a sign that the safe-haven trade is unwinding even as actual geopolitical risk remains elevated. Think about that for a moment. The world is closer to regional war in the Middle East than it has been in decades, and gold is falling. Either markets have genuinely priced in a resolution, or they are dangerously complacent. History suggests the latter is far more likely than the former.

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, is back buying bitcoin — 1,550 BTC — after raising $181 million through stock sales, its first purchase since selling $2.5 million worth of BTC. This tells you something important: the smart institutional money is not sitting in cash waiting for clarity. It is moving, rotating, positioning. The question for ordinary investors is whether they are moving with intention or simply being moved.

Ukraine: Fighting to the Last Ukrainian.

Zelenskyy is in London meeting with Keir Starmer, French and German leaders, discussing the “urgent need to scale up” air defences after Russia fires hypersonic weapons at Ukrainian cities. The optics are powerful. The substance is bleak.

Europe cannot admit that Russia is winning. To do so would require acknowledging years of failed policy, miscalculated sanctions that hurt European economies more than they constrained Moscow, and the catastrophic human cost of a proxy war that was never going to end on Western terms. So the show continues. More weapons. More summits. More solemn statements issued from the steps of Downing Street.

The brutal reality is that there is no serious peace negotiation happening. Ukraine cannot currently negotiate from a position of strength. Its army is exhausted. Its population is depleted. The demographic cost of three-plus years of total war is a wound that will take a generation to heal, if it heals at all. Europe will not negotiate from honesty because honesty would require its leaders to stand before their publics and explain why they encouraged a war they had no real intention of fighting themselves.

“We will fight to the last Ukrainian” is not a phrase anyone in Brussels or London would ever say out loud. But the policy arithmetic leads nowhere else. Every summit produces more commitments to air defence systems, more promises of long-range weapons, more declarations that Ukraine’s sovereignty is non-negotiable. What none of these summits produces is a credible path to an actual ceasefire, an actual negotiation, or an actual end to the killing.

Russia is not losing. That is the fact that reshapes everything else in this story. Russian forces are advancing. The Russian economy, while under strain, has not collapsed as Western economists confidently predicted it would. Russian society has not risen up against Putin. The sanctions regime, which was supposed to be the decisive weapon, has driven Russia closer to China, India, and the Global South while costing European consumers billions in elevated energy prices.

The people dying in this calculus are Ukrainian. The people profiting are in defence industries, energy markets, and financial institutions that thrive on volatility. European defence stocks have been among the best performing equities on the continent for two years running. Follow the money and the fog of war clears considerably.

The Permanent Crisis Economy.

Pull back and look at all the headlines together. Iran war. Ceasefire hope. Oil falls. Markets rally. Bitcoin bought. SpaceX IPO looming. ECB hiking. Fed pressured to cut. Gold drops on jobs data. Zelenskyy in London. Iran’s regime growing more resilient.

Each story feels urgent in isolation. Together, they form a pattern: permanent crisis, managed just enough to prevent resolution, volatile enough to generate trading opportunities, dramatic enough to keep the public anxious and distracted from asking deeper questions.

This is the permanent crisis economy. It is not a conspiracy, it requires no secret meetings or shadowy coordination. It is simply the emergent result of a system in which volatility is profitable, resolution is not, and the attention economy rewards alarm over analysis. War drives energy prices up. High energy prices drive inflation. Inflation drives central bank action. Central bank action moves bond markets. Bond markets move everything else. And at every step of that chain, someone is positioned to profit.

What You Should Actually Be Watching.

Not the ceasefire announcements. Not Trump’s social media posts about rate cuts. Not the breathless IPO explainers asking how you can buy your piece of Elon’s rocket company.

Watch the ECB decision and what it signals about European inflation persistence. Watch whether the Fed actually cuts rates against the backdrop of strong jobs data and a president demanding accommodation. Watch the weeks surrounding the SpaceX IPO for signs of market-wide liquidity drain. Watch what Russia does on the ground in Ukraine while everyone’s attention is on London summits and hypersonic missile headlines.

The theatre is designed to direct your gaze. The important things happen where nobody is looking.

The question worth asking is not “will there be a ceasefire?” or “will the Fed cut rates?” or even “should I buy SpaceX shares?” The question is: who benefits from you never being quite sure of the answer and why does the uncertainty never seem to resolve?

That question, sitting quietly beneath ten seemingly unrelated news headlines, is the only one that actually matters right now.

Substack is one of the few places left where we can still learn to be real human beings, to build genuine connections, free from the algorithm. Don’t lose that.

Before I committed to Substack in the middle of February, I tried X, Instagram, and YouTube. I’ll be completely honest with you: discovering Substack was a turning point for me. I’ve put all my effort into this platform because it simply works, but why?

I love reading and writing, and I quickly realised that the vast majority of people on Substack are, let me put it this way, more “sophisticated animals.” I love that about this place. The conversations are deeper, the intentions feel more genuine, and there is a kind of intellectual honesty here that I struggled to find elsewhere.

In this article, I want to ask a few honest questions and work through the answers. Let’s get started.

Why Did We Choose Substack?

We all arrive here for different reasons, whether it’s to heal through writing, to process personal trauma, to share a business perspective, or simply to reflect on life. Some of us burned out on chasing algorithms. Others got tired of shrinking their ideas into captions or compressing their thoughts into short videos. And some just needed a place where words still matter.

But regardless of what brought us here, there is one thing that unites us all:

We write and we read.

That shared foundation changes the entire dynamic of this platform. You are not just a content creator performing for an audience, you are a writer in a community of readers who genuinely care about what you have to say.

As I mentioned in a previous article, there is no magic formula for growing on Substack. Still, I notice that people especially those who come from other social platforms tend to struggle here, particularly in the beginning. And I think I understand why.

Why Substack Is a Different Animal.

Substack requires a fundamentally different attitude. Growing here is not about crafting a clickbait video that goes viral on YouTube, or posting a beautiful, carefully filtered photo that catches eyes on Instagram. Those platforms reward spectacle. Substack rewards depth.

What Substack asks from you from day one is something simpler, and in many ways harder: humility.

What do I mean by that? We all start in the same place, writing and reading. There are no shortcuts, no viral formulas, no visual tricks to hide behind. It’s less about discovering clever growth hacks and more about showing up, being consistent, experimenting, observing what works, and developing a genuine feel for what you want to share and what value you can offer others.

Substack is, in my opinion, a very special platform. Unlike others, there is no single formula that works for everyone here. You cannot simply copy what worked for someone else and expect the same results. Here, you are the majority. You write your perspective. You tell your story. And that uniqueness, rather than being a weakness, is your greatest asset.

The One Problem I See Most.

I observe many profiles, complete beginners and established writers alike and they are genuinely interesting. People are sharing remarkable things here: personal stories, business insights, creative experiments, philosophical reflections. The quality and variety of voices on this platform never stops surprising me.

But the biggest problem I consistently notice is a lack of consistency. It doesn’t matter whether you publish daily or weekly or even twice a month; what matters is that you commit to a rhythm and stick to it. Your readers need to know when to expect you. Trust is built through reliability, not perfection.

There is nothing more damaging to slow, steady growth than suddenly disappearing for three or four days or longer without explanation. Momentum, once lost, is genuinely hard to rebuild. Your audience moves on, the algorithm loses interest, and you have to start regaining ground you already won. Consistency is not glamorous, but it is the quiet foundation everything else is built on.

Why Patience Is Essential — But Not Sufficient.

Writing is one part of the equation, but Substack compared to YouTube, for example demands genuine human interaction. You can write exceptional content, craft a compelling story, choose the perfect title, and still be largely overlooked if you stay invisible within the community. The writing gets you in the door. The relationships keep you in the room.

From my own experience, one of the most important things I did early on was start connecting with people. Reading their work. Leaving comments. Responding to notes. Showing up not just as a writer but as a reader. And believe me, it changes everything. Doors open that you didn’t even know existed.

We don’t write only for ourselves. We write for others. So if we want people to read our stories, we must do the same for them. Reach out. Engage. You don’t need to write something elaborate or perfectly worded, genuine curiosity, warmth, and humility will open more doors than any growth hack ever could. People can feel the difference between someone who is performing engagement and someone who is genuinely interested. Be the latter.

What People Often Forget.

Everything takes time. On YouTube, a video can theoretically go viral overnight but going viral doesn’t guarantee success, loyalty, or longevity. Here on Substack, a note or article can occasionally take off too, but let’s be honest with each other: it’s far less likely than on other platforms, and spending your energy chasing that outcome is mostly a distraction from the real work.

The real work is slow. It is quiet. It is unglamorous. And it is absolutely worth it.

You need to be patient with yourself, and you need to give yourself genuine time to grow. This is hard in a world addicted to instant results, where social media bombards us with highlight reels and success stories, where we see only the peak of the mountain and never the years of early mornings, self-doubt, and quiet effort it took to get there. Most people overestimate what they can achieve in three months and dramatically underestimate what they can build in two years.

Go and engage with others. Give them your time and attention. Read their work with genuine curiosity. Try to support them in a real way, ask thoughtful questions, and you will find that people respond in a remarkably positive and generous way. The Substack community, at its best, is one of the most encouraging creative environments I have encountered.

A Note for Those Who Feel They Have Nothing to Say.

Many people especially younger writers doubt themselves deeply before they even begin. They worry they don’t have a good enough story, enough life experience, or enough hard-won wisdom to share anything worth reading. They look at writers who have been around for decades and feel instantly outmatched.

Don’t let that stop you.

Your perspective is valid precisely because it is yours. You may not have decades of lessons behind you yet, but you have something equally valuable: a fresh point of view, an openness to the world, and a kind of productive naivety that more experienced writers sometimes lose. The fact that you haven’t made all the mistakes yet doesn’t disqualify you, it gives you a different and genuinely important angle.

Start sharing. Write your story from your own angle, in your own voice, without trying to sound like someone else. You’ll be surprised how even an unconventional or half-formed idea can resonate with people or give you a clear direction to keep developing. The writers you admire most started somewhere too. They were beginners once, just like you are now.

On “Finding a Niche”.

There is a lot of talk in content creator circles about finding a niche, being a niche, owning a niche. You will find entire YouTube channels and newsletters dedicated to helping you figure out your niche before you write a single word. And while there is some truth to the idea that focus helps, I think this conversation is largely overblown and for beginners, it can become a form of sophisticated procrastination.

Don’t waste hours and days watching videos and filling out frameworks trying to determine whether you qualify as a niche. That time is almost always better spent writing.

You are the director here. You are the screenwriter. You are the hero of your own story and heroes don’t wait for permission to begin. The niche, if it exists, tends to reveal itself through the process of writing, not before it. You discover what you care about by writing consistently, by noticing which topics light you up, and by paying attention to what your readers respond to.

It is just you, as a human being, and your writing. Start there.

Zoom Out: The Bigger Picture.

If you are at an early stage as I genuinely consider myself to be, bear this in mind: Substack is still a relatively small platform compared to the giants of social media, and it is honestly not for everyone. It asks too much of people who are not willing to slow down, think carefully, and invest real effort over time.

But it is growing. And it will become much bigger.

There will be people who discover Substack next month, next year, and five years from now who will be exactly where you are today staring at a small follower count, wondering if any of this is worth it. The difference is that by then, you will have months or years of consistent work behind you. You will have built something real while they are only just beginning.

My point is this: keep a wider perspective. Zoom out. Being small today does not mean you will be small in a year or two. Growth on Substack is rarely linear, it tends to be slow, then sudden. You build momentum quietly, and one day you look up and realise how far you’ve come.

Take advantage of discovering this platform now. Commit to it fully. Show up with humility, consistency, and genuine curiosity and give it the time it deserves. The results will follow.

Discipline doesn’t have to carry the negative weight we so often attach to it. I believe that real discipline is built from an early age not through punishment or control, but through the way we, as parents, help our children discover the world.

When we set small boundaries and take the time to explain why they exist, when we give children small chores and real responsibilities, something natural happens: discipline and connection stop being opposites. They become the same thing. A child who understands the reason behind a rule doesn’t feel controlled, they feel trusted. And that trust is the foundation of everything.

What Has Shaped Me.

Oh gosh Peggy, this is one of the most difficult questions I’ve ever been asked.

What shaped me? I would say that living the first sixteen years of my life in communist Poland was a truly surrealistic journey. It was dramatic at times, I witnessed martial law and riots in my own city, where three people were killed by the communist militia. That kind of reality leaves a mark on how you see the world, power, and freedom.

But beyond that, it was everything I carried forward: my father’s illness and his loss, the many mistakes I made as a people-pleaser for far too long, and finally the ending of a long relationship.

None of it was easy. All of it was necessary.

Raising Children Inside a System You Don’t Fully Believe In.

“I find myself caught between two responsibilities: helping my child survive the system as it exists, and helping my child grow beyond the limits of that system. How should parents think about this tension?” - question asked by Anna from

Don’t fight the system head-on. It’s too powerful, and that battle will exhaust you without changing much.

The real advantage you have is self-awareness, you know how the system works. That knowledge is a gift you can pass on.

Take what is genuinely useful from the system. There is always something worth keeping. But alongside that, consistently explain your own perspective to your children. Teach them to question things, not cynically, but thoughtfully. Show them what critical thinking actually looks like in practice. Help them understand their own worth, independent of grades, rankings, or external validation.

The goal is not to raise children who reject the world, but children who can see it clearly and choose their own path within it.

Raising Children in the Age of Smartphones.

“You have a daughter — tell me about the best ways to raise children, especially in the age of smartphones?” - question asked by

This is a tough one, and I want to be honest from the start: I don’t consider myself the best parent or any kind of guru. I simply try to raise my daughter in a way that may not always be popular. There are many different approaches and philosophies around this, but I can only speak from what I actually did.

From the very beginning, I made sure to spend real, meaningful time with her. She got her first phone at twelve, but there was never any strict controlling, no screen time limits enforced by me, no specific rules about how long she could use it. What there was, long before the phone arrived, was a life full enough that she didn’t need it to fill a void.

She loves reading. She spent more than two years practising contortion, genuinely dedicated to it, inspired by Anna McNaulty, who is worth looking up on YouTube if you don’t know her work. She had interests, passions, and curiosity that were hers before a screen ever competed for her attention.

That’s the real point. Using phones and the internet is inevitable. I’m not interested in pretending otherwise. But the window before a child gets a device matters enormously. If you can show them, in those years, that the world is genuinely interesting without a screen, that there are things worth pursuing, things that bring real satisfaction, then the phone becomes one tool among many, not the centre of everything.

In my opinion, the single biggest driver of screen addiction in children is the absence of a genuine hobby or passion. When there’s nothing that truly excites a child, the phone steps in to fill that space. And it does so very effectively. That’s what makes it so difficult to address once it’s already taken hold.

On Stocks and the Market Right Now.

“Are there any particular stocks or sectors you’re especially excited about right now?” - question asked by Tra from

Personally, I have no exposure to stocks at the moment, not because I think there are no good ones to pick, but because I don’t believe this is the right time to be buying. We are near all-time highs, and the risk of a significant correction or something much larger feels very real to me.

If I had to choose, I wouldn’t go for the exciting, headline-grabbing names. I’d look at boring companies: the ones with stable profits and reliable dividends. Beyond that, stocks in the military-industrial complex and large-cap technology are worth considering, given the current direction of the world.

But I’ll be honest, I hold cash and stay cautious. Sometimes doing nothing is the most intelligent move.

The Future of Substack.

“How do you see Substack in the future? A new X or Instagram?” question asked by

You make a fair point, and I think you’re right that it’s almost inevitable sooner or later, Substack will evolve in ways driven by platform economics and growth pressures. That’s simply what happens.

But I don’t think it will become just another social media clone. The nature of Substack demands different skills and attracts different people. The people here like to write. They like to read. That is not a small thing.

Substack is still relatively small, but it’s growing fast. And within that growth, I genuinely believe we can still find real voices, people who share something true about themselves, where you can feel the energy and honesty behind the words.

Will it change? Yes. Will it lose something along the way? Probably. But I also think there will always be a corner of it worth staying for.

When Did I Begin Gaining Wisdom?

I have to lovingly correct your question because you’re being far too kind. 😊The real question is: When did you start making so many mistakes, and how many times did you have to fail before you finally learned from them?

The honest answer is: it was a long process.

The first major turning point was relocating to Ireland ten years ago. Moving to a new country, building a new life from scratch, it teaches you things about yourself that comfort never could.

The second turning point was becoming a parent. Raising my daughter changed everything about how I see people and the world. And then came the ending of my long relationship, which was painful not simply because it ended, but because in that pain I finally saw the pattern. All the mistakes that had led me to the same painful places, over and over again. Recognising that pattern was the moment everything shifted.

That final stage of understanding has been unfolding over the last seventeen months.

Raising Three Children With Very Different Needs.

“I have three girls — 13, 7, and 2. How do I give them equal time without getting caught up in one and forgetting the others?” - question asked by

First, I want to be honest. I have one daughter, so I’ve never personally navigated splitting time and attention between multiple children. I have enormous respect for what you’re doing.

One of the most common mistakes parents make with two or more children is placing too much responsibility on the oldest. The eldest ends up doing things with the younger siblings that should really come from the parent. I understand why it happens, it’s survival but it’s worth being aware of.

With the age gap you have, a thirteen-year-old and a two-year-old are living in almost entirely different worlds. They won’t always want the same things at the same time, and that’s fine.

What I’d suggest: create some dedicated time where all three are together, some shared activity that teaches them how to exist as siblings across those age differences. And then separately, carve out focused one-on-one time with each of them, even if brief. Full presence matters more than length of time.

I also want to say: I admire you. I can only imagine how tired you are. This is also a reminder of how important it is for both parents to be genuinely engaged and to back each other up.

For the Writer Who Is Afraid to Publish.

“What would you say to someone who is right now full of doubts about themselves as a writer, thinking whether to publish or not?” - question asked by Ana Kely from

Doubting yourself is one of the biggest obstacles a person can face and I say that because I lived inside that doubt for most of my life. I never truly believed in myself. I knew there were areas where I was capable, but I allowed doubt to sit in the driver’s seat constantly.

Seven months ago, I wasn’t sure anyone would want to read what I write. Now I can see that perhaps I do have something worth sharing, a perspective that resonates with at least some people. That shift didn’t come from becoming more talented. It came from simply deciding to start.

So here is what I would ask you to sit with: Why do you doubt yourself? Really examine it. Where does that voice come from, and does it actually know what it’s talking about?

And then ask yourself the second, more important question: What do I actually have to lose if I publish?

Think about the worst case scenario honestly. Nobody reads it. Nobody buys it. It doesn’t change your life in any negative way. Tomorrow comes regardless. The only thing you walk away with is a lesson and that is data, not failure.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, even if what you gain is simply the knowledge of what doesn’t work yet.

Don’t wait. Don’t polish it forever. Just publish it.

Here is how I think about the difference.

You are seeing yourself honestly: your patterns, your reactions, the gap between who you want to be and who you actually are in a given moment. That seeing, even when it stings, feels grounding. It points somewhere useful.

Overthinking, on the other hand, spins. It circles the same questions without ever landing. It generates anxiety rather than insight. It tends to be focused on what others think, on imagined futures, on worst-case scenarios that may never arrive. It exhausts you without leaving you any clearer than when you started.

The simplest test I know: after sitting with a thought about yourself, do you feel more grounded or more anxious? Self-awareness, even when it reveals something difficult, tends to leave you with a sense of now I know what I’m working with. Overthinking leaves you feeling lost and tired.

I wouldn’t commit to calling it a Great Depression by 2028 not because I’m optimistic, but because I simply don’t know the timeline, and anyone who claims precision here is probably selling something.

What I do believe is that the current economic system is heading toward a fundamental collapse. Not a correction a restructuring. It’s not a question of if, but when. The level of money printing, the debt structures that exist, these are not sustainable. Politicians and central bankers know this.

There are weeks when the headlines tell one story on the surface and an entirely different one underneath. This is one of those weeks. Across Europe, North America and the Middle East, a series of seemingly disconnected events are in fact threads of the same tapestry: the slow but accelerating restructuring of money, debt, energy and power and who ultimately bears the cost.

Spoiler: it is, as always, the ordinary household.

Two Wars, One World Economy Breaking at the Seams.

Before we talk about energy bills and borrowed billions, let us be clear about the backdrop against which all of this is happening: the world is running two major wars simultaneously, and both are now producing economic shockwaves that reach into the daily lives of people who have never been near a battlefield.

In the Middle East, the US-Iran conflict is driving oil above $100 a barrel and freezing any realistic path to energy price stability. In Eastern Europe, Russia this week struck Kyiv with a hypersonic missile in what is being described as one of the largest attacks on the Ukrainian capital since the war began. Moscow has since threatened further strikes — and has told foreign nationals to leave Kyiv.

That last detail matters. When a nuclear-armed power publicly tells foreign nationals to evacuate a capital city, it is not a diplomatic flourish. It is a signal. Markets read it. Energy traders read it. Governments read it. And eventually, all of that gets priced into the cost of heating your home, filling your car, and buying your groceries.

Two wars. Two energy shocks. One global economy that has not remotely priced in the full consequences of either.

The Iran War Comes Home to Your Energy Bill.

UK household energy prices will rise sharply in July. The reason is blunt: soaring wholesale costs driven by the ongoing conflict with Iran are hitting British bills for the first time in a direct, measurable way. For months, the war’s energy impact was absorbed by markets, hedges, and political noise. Now it lands on your direct debit.

This is not a surprise. Wars in energy-producing regions always eventually reach your utility bill, the delay is structural, not a reprieve. Oil prices have already climbed back above $100 a barrel, with analysts warning that the energy market may be past a “point of no return.”

US strikes on Iranian targets have dampened any hopes of a near-term peace deal, with negotiations described as stuck in an “endless loop.” Meanwhile, Iran says it remains in peace talks, describing the US bombing of its targets as carried out in “bad faith.”

“Endless loop.” That phrase should alarm anyone paying attention. There is no obvious off-ramp, and markets are pricing in a prolonged disruption. The geopolitical risk premium in oil was always coming. The only question was when households would stop being shielded from it. July 2026 is apparently the answer, at least for the UK.

Add to this the Russia-Ukraine dimension: any further escalation threatening gas transit routes or broader European energy infrastructure pushes wholesale prices higher still. The UK July bill increase may not be the ceiling. It may be the floor.

Spain’s €9 Billion “Plan” — And the Question Nobody Is Asking.

Spain’s government this week unveiled a €9 billion energy transition plan. The pitch is appealing: homes will become more energy efficient, public housing will be upgraded, and low earners will receive near-free public transport. The European Union will co-finance it. It was framed as a bold, progressive response to the global energy shock caused by the US-Iran war and positioned as a step toward climate resilience. The optics are excellent. The economics deserve scrutiny.

So ask yourself: where does €9 billion actually come from?

Spain is not running a surplus. The EU co-financing mechanism ultimately draws on member-state contributions and critically bonds. Debt. More debt issued against the future productive capacity of European citizens. When a government says it will give you something for free, ask who signed the promissory note.

The honest answer is that Spain, like most Western governments pursuing large “transition” or “green” spending programmes, will fund this primarily through sovereign bond issuance. That means borrowing at interest. Interest that is repaid through taxes. Taxes paid by the very households the plan claims to help.

Providing “near-free” public transport and subsidised home upgrades sounds generous. But when the funding mechanism is debt not productivity gains, not genuine savings it is simply a transfer of wealth across time. Today’s beneficiaries receive the subsidy. Tomorrow’s taxpayers service the debt. Redistributing existing wealth is economics. Borrowing to give things away and calling it a plan is politics. The two are frequently confused especially in election years.

This is the uncomfortable truth about what some call socialist-style state generosity: it is rarely free. It is almost always borrowed. And borrowed money, in the hands of governments, tends to find its way back to the citizen in the form of inflation, higher taxes, or both. There is no such thing as government money. There is only taxpayer money spent now, or spent later with interest.

120% of Income on Food and Rent: Canada’s Invisible Crisis.

In Canada, a headline this week captured a number so absurd it deserves to be repeated slowly: for some households, food and rent now cost 120% of their income. Not 80%. Not 100%. One hundred and twenty percent. They are spending more than they earn just to eat and sleep indoors.

Marissa Alexander, executive director of Food Secure Canada, put it plainly: people simply do not have enough income to support their lives. Wages have not kept pace. Housing costs have surged. Grocery prices have risen sharply. The convergence of these three forces stagnant wages, housing inflation, and food price inflation has produced a kind of slow-motion household insolvency at scale.

This is not a fringe story. Canada is a wealthy G7 nation. If it is producing conditions in which working people cannot cover basic survival costs from their income, it is a signal about the broader failure of how post-pandemic monetary and fiscal policy has played out and who has been left exposed.

The Digital Euro, the Stablecoin Push, and the Real Money Question.

Two related stories this week reveal something important about where money itself is heading. First: the European Central Bank is facing renewed pressure to accelerate the digital euro project. Second: Bank of Ireland and AIB have joined a European bank consortium developing a euro-denominated stablecoin a private digital currency that some say could rival the ECB’s own initiative.

A stablecoin is a digital asset designed to hold a fixed value unlike Bitcoin, which swings wildly day to day. This consortium’s stablecoin would be backed 1:1 with the euro, supervised by the Dutch central bank, and operate under MiCAR, the EU’s regulatory framework for crypto-assets.

Now ask yourself: why are major commercial banks — now, in 2026 — suddenly backing a stablecoin project?

Is the euro not good enough? Is the dollar failing as a medium of exchange? Or is this about something else entirely control, programmability, and who gets to set the terms of digital payments in the next monetary era?

The timing is not coincidental. Stablecoins are, at their core, a new layer of payment infrastructure. Whoever controls that layer central banks via a digital currency, or commercial banks via a consortium stablecoin controls enormous amounts of transaction data and ultimately economic leverage over individual users.

This leads to a deeper question that rarely gets asked: what is money, really?

Money is a social agreement a shared fiction that a piece of paper, a digital entry, or a token represents value. That fiction only works because it is trusted and enforced. Historically, states enforced it. Central banks managed it. Now, commercial banks want to create their own programmable version potentially traceable to every transaction you make, every shop you enter, every cause you donate to.

That is not inherently sinister. But it is a profound shift in the architecture of monetary power. And citizens should understand what is being built before it is built around them. When banks and governments move this fast toward a new form of money, the question is never just “how does it work?” The question is: who benefits from knowing exactly how you spend yours?

Conclusion: The Bill Always Arrives.

The common thread across this week’s headlines is the question of who pays.

UK households pay for a war they didn’t start, through energy bills they can’t escape. Spanish citizens will pay for a €9 billion transition plan through taxes and debt service they won’t see itemised on any statement. Canadian households are already paying spending money they don’t have, in one of the richest countries in the world. Ukrainians are paying with something far more irreplaceable than money, as hypersonic missiles land on their capital and a nuclear power tells foreigners to leave.

Meanwhile, banks are quietly building a new monetary plumbing system that could give institutions unprecedented visibility into how you spend your money. And the world’s most powerful central bank is being asked to be “independent” by the same political forces that spent years trying to control it.

None of these stories are unconnected. They are all, at root, about the same thing: economic power, who holds it, and the stories told to the rest of us about why the arrangement is fair, necessary, or temporary.

The bill always arrives. The only question is in whose name it is made out.
