A position that, as we shall see, is far from coincidental: Bach constructs the entire Mass by always placing the figure of Christ as the load-bearing axis of each of its great sections.

We will explore the two voices that dialogue while exchanging the roles of Father and Son, the traverso flute that embroiders melodies above them and an apparently simple question that conceals philological, acoustic and theological implications of quite another order: one flute or two?

And then we will do something unusual: we will listen to the same piece in two contrasting performances, Karl Richter and Ton Koopman, to understand concretely what it means today to perform Bach in a historically informed way, and why this choice radically transforms the character of the music.

We see it in the Passions and find it again here, in the monumental Mass in B Minor, specifically in the arias and duets.

In this video, we dive into the heart of the Christe Eleison. Nestled between the two granite pillars of the Kyrie movements, the Christe represents an oasis of lyricism. Bach consciously chooses the style galante and the rhetoric of Neapolitan opera to give a human face to prayer.

Bach suggests that God is not just a transcendent and inscrutable figure, but a presence accessible to human affection. Here, operatic eros becomes the means to understand agape, divine love.

Enjoy the video and the music, in this performance conducted by Andrea Marcon.

Inside the Kyrie I - The play of voices

Counterpoint explained in color

In the previous episodes we told the story of how Bach came to Leipzig. Then we stepped closer to the music: the four-bar gateway. Today we go one step further. We enter the first Kyrie — the most complex, the most “Bachian” — and we try to understand how counterpoint works. What a fugue is, how the voices chase and overlap each other, why this technique was considered the highest form of compositional art. We will follow the voices directly on the score, each one in a different colour — so you can see them moving as you listen. No technical jargon. Just the right words to understand what is happening.
