Ministry can become routine when we lose sight of Lord and lose our love for others. The danger is not simply that we keep doing the same things. The danger is that we keep doing them while forgetting why we do them and whom we are doing them for.

Christ calls the church to remember, repent, and return to the works they did at first—not by becoming busy again, but by returning to the love that was supposed to motivate their work in the first place.

Are there signs that we are losing our love for Christ? Because we’re dealing with matters of the heart, this requires discernment and honest self-examination. Here are some questions I ask myself:

1. How are my personal Bible reading, quiet times, prayer, purity, and battle with sin?

2. Do I talk about Jesus in my real life, when I’m off the stage and not in front of a camera?

3. Do I enjoy spending time in Bible study because of the Lord himself, or primarily because of the messages, lessons, and content I can produce from what I’ve learned?

4. Can I rest in God’s sovereignty when ministry does not go as planned?

5. Am I keeping my priorities in order, especially when it comes to caring for, serving, and ministering to my wife and kids—those who are closest to me?

6. Have I become a tyrant with the people I work with, or do I actually care about who they are apart from what they do?

7. Can I sit, worship, and listen when others are leading?

8. Am I seeking to serve the church with my song selection, song key, and arrangements, or has it become more about performance or convenience?

9. Am I measuring my metrics and losing sight of the actual people behind the numbers?

10. Am I able to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep?

11. Do I genuinely care about the sins of others and their need to turn back to Christ?

12. Does my heart still ache for the lost? Do I genuinely want others to come to the Lord for the sake of their souls?

I’ve often said that I wish I could do more ministry. So these aren’t questions I ask to determine whether I’m doing enough ministry, but questions I ask to determine whether I still love the Christ I’m ministering for.

When does ministry become just going through the motions? Is there a point where we’re simply doing the same things over and over again without keeping the gospel before us?

This is important to me not only as a Christian creative, but much more importantly as a preacher and teacher. When does it become simply the next message or the next lesson because this is just what I do?

To be sure, there are positives to putting your head down, getting the work done, and developing a rhythm where ministry truly becomes what we do. Faithfulness often requires consistency, discipline, and simply showing up. But we should still be aware of the danger of falling into a routine where we lose sight of our mission and our Master.

In Revelation, we see Christ address the church in Ephesus, a church that worked, toiled, endured patiently, and had not grown weary in doing ministry in the name of Christ:

“I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary.” (Revelation 2:2–3)

This was not a church that had stopped working. They were active. They were discerning. They were enduring. They were laboring in Christ’s name. And yet Christ had something against them:

“But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first.” (Revelation 2:4–5)

This is an important warning for those of us who preach, teach, lead, or serve in the church. We can continue doing good and faithful-looking work while slowly losing sight of the love that ought to be at the foundation of it all.

In my Kids Q&A this Sunday, I was happy and humbled to be asked where the story I was telling could be found in the Bible. I was sharing the famous story of the birth of Moses, but I forgot to mention that my text was from Exodus 1–2. A couple of thoughts:

• I’m astonished that a child was curious enough to ask where in the Bible the story could be found. I’m happy that the kids know we teach the Word of God!

• I’m humbled because, as a preacher and teacher, it is important that I cite my sources. The authority is in Scripture, not in me.

• I’m resolved that, even as adults, we must discern whether what we believe is actually from the Bible, from the culture, or from our own thinking.

I had the chance to spend time with each of my children today in different ways. Helping with homework, playing music, watching them do arts and crafts. We’re getting ready to go on vacation, and I’m super thankful for that, but today I don’t want to forget about the slow and regular days I get to spend with my kids. Here are some other random tidbits:

• My first son Linus has been being a good big brother, and I saw a lot of it demonstrated this weekend when we took a road trip. He reads to his siblings, he tells them when they’re not being nice to each other, and he sets a good example in apologizing to me and Jess. I’m very proud of him and he has been growing.

• My second son Ark is now in first grade and has begun attending the children’s worship service. This past Sunday was the first where I got to lead music and preach to him. I don’t take these opportunities to minister to my own for granted.

• I picked up my kids today and my daughter Numbers came up and ran into me. There is no better feeling! I carried her all the way back to the car.

To all the dads out there reading this, keep up the good work of being a father! And to all of God’s children, remember that you are loved far more than you can fathom.

Family and Friendship

I most appreciated LaGeorge’s emphasis on the responsibility of church leaders and the broader church family to embrace and integrate singles into the life of the church. She challenges churches to move beyond simply creating programs for singles and instead cultivate genuine belonging through multigenerational fellowship, meaningful friendships, opportunities to serve, faithful teaching from God’s Word, and spaces where singles can both contribute and rest. She also offers practical wisdom for supporting singles well, including providing trustworthy counselors, tangible support, and thoughtful language that reflects the dignity and value of every believer.

I was most challenged by LaGeorge’s encouragement for singles to pursue deep friendships. The Christian life was never meant to be lived in isolation, and singles are called to invest in relationships, community, and the mission of the church.

Sorrow and Sexuality

I was most moved by LaGeorge’s honest discussion of the sorrow that can accompany singleness. In a deeply personal chapter, she addresses the pain of childlessness, the assumptions others may make, and the doubts and fears that can arise. Yet she consistently points readers back to Christ—the One who understands suffering, meets us in sorrow, and gives purpose even in seasons of waiting and loss.

I was most grateful for the chapter on singleness and sexuality. This is an area that is often either ignored or addressed without sufficient compassion and biblical clarity. LaGeorge provides a straightforward and faithful framework for how single believers can steward their sexuality in a way that honors Christ. This chapter alone makes the book worth reading.

Church and Missions

The final chapters consider the place of singles within the church and the unique opportunities they have to participate in missions and God’s work in the world. LaGeorge closes with the reminder that Christ Himself is the ultimate source of comfort, joy, and fulfillment for singles.

Single Together is a personal and practical look at singleness rooted in the gospel. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter make this book especially useful for personal study, small groups, and church leadership conversations. This is a timely resource for helping the church better understand, honor, and walk alongside singles as members of the family of God.

How do I make sure my prayers do not turn into performance? Scripture says that we should not pray like hypocrites and Gentiles. Here is my conclusion:

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:5–8)

The hypocrites try to influence people, and the Gentiles try to influence God. The hypocrites hide their true motives from the people they pray in front of, wanting to be seen. The Gentiles, who do not know God, try to manipulate him with their many empty words. There are two questions I can ask myself every time I prepare to pray:

1. Do I have right and sincere motives for praying, or is it just for show?

2. Am I looking to my prayers for power, or am I trusting in God, who knows and hears?

Prayer is not a performance. Prayer is personal. Rather than masking our motives, prayer is personal in the sense that it is genuine, relational, and without pretense. And rather than being manipulative, prayer is personal in the sense that we are not trying to be tricky or use tactics, but trusting in the One who hears and already knows what we need.

Personal does not mean we keep our prayers private. While we can pray corporately with and in front of other people, we should not lose that personal element. We come before our caring Heavenly Father, who invites us to ask him for whatever we need.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

How do I make sure my prayers do not turn into performance? Scripture says that we should not pray like hypocrites and Gentiles. Yesterday I started with the hypocrites, sharing how I can apply these truths to my life, and today I will continue with the Gentiles:

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:5–8)

Jesus says not to pray as the Gentiles do. While “Gentiles” literally means non-Jews, Jesus is contrasting their approach to prayer with that of those who know and trust the true God. The Gentiles prayed as though they could be heard by their gods through many words and repeated phrases. But our God is not like that. He cannot be manipulated or forced. Rather, we approach him with reverence and trust, knowing that he is our heavenly father.

Christians should not be afraid that God will not hear us or answer us if we do not pray the “right” way. There are no secret words or phrases that must be said. We should also be careful about what we say, not merely going through the motions or saying trite phrases without any real heart behind them. We do not pray to persuade an unwilling God to listen. We pray to a Father who already knows what we need.

Come to God knowing that he is our heavenly father. We respect him, but we are also affectionate toward him. We do not have to convince him of what we need. He knows and controls everything, and he knows what is best for his children. We ask with confidence, knowing that he hears us, and trusting that he knows how to help.

How do I make sure my prayers do not turn into performance? Yesterday I shared from Scripture that we should not pray like hypocrites and Gentiles. I want to share how I can apply these truths to my life, and I will start today with the hypocrites.

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (Matthew 6:5-6)

Jesus likens unacceptable prayer to that of the hypocrites. These are the pretenders, the duplicitous, and the insincere. They are actors. They are not ultimately praying for God. They are praying for the people so that they can be seen.

The passage contrasts praying for the attention of others with praying for the attention of God. The issue is motivation. The hypocrite wears a mask that hides their true character and motives. Am I motivated to pray so that I can have the ears of others, or so that I can have the ear of God?

In what situations am I tempted to pray so that others may see me? Surely, if I volunteer to pray just so I can speak in front of others, that would be a problem. Also, am I praying in a way that draws attention to me instead of to the person or matter I am actually praying for?

The bottom line is that God can see my heart. While others may not be able to see my motivation, God does. This makes it important to pray with a pure heart before him.

Is prayer a performance? As a preacher I pray in front of people — I even write prayer poems. But I also pray in front of people in my Sunday School class and in my small groups. I pray in front of my wife. I pray in front of my kids. How do I make sure my prayers do not turn into a performance?

Thankfully, Jesus himself gives us rather clear instructions when it comes to prayer:

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Matthew 6:5–8)

Right off the bat, Jesus likens unacceptable prayer to that of the hypocrites. These are the pretenders, the duplicitous, and the insincere. They are actors. They are not praying for God, but they are praying for the people — so that they can be seen.

Next, Jesus says to not pray as the Gentiles do. While Gentiles means non-Jews, it also carries the meaning of those who don’t know God, who are not of God, who are separated from him. The Gentiles pray to idols so that they can be heard in a way that manipulates and coerces these gods. But our God is not like that. He cannot be forced. Rather, he must be feared. And those that come to him in faith, as our heavenly father, will have his ear.

What type of worship leader am I? I was thinking this through as I have a break from leading worship music with our adults and am currently getting reps in with our youth service.

1. I am not really one to get “lost in worship.” I sing with my eyes open and I try to stay aware of what’s happening on stage and in the congregation, and I don’t think that it’s necessarily “less” worshipful. Funny story — this Sunday I was aware that the lyrics were not on the screen for the congregation, so I verbally asked for the lyrics to go up mid song.

2. I invite participation, literally saying “let’s sing together,” but also with clapping and raising hands. I don’t command it — but I do take charge saying this is what I planned for us to do, let me lead you. I plan the set with these opportunities in mind, and it’s all very much prepared and rehearsed. Again, I don’t think that makes it “less” worshipful. I’m looking to grow in our worship to God.

3. I take the worship of God seriously but I don’t take myself too seriously. Worship through music is important, but it’s not the only way we worship God in the service. I also understand that there are many players and pieces, from the preaching to the AV team. I try my best and try to get our team to play our best, but I can laugh at our mistakes and I’ll still clap for God at the end.

I wasn’t always this way, and I think I’m definitely open to improving as a worship leader. But this is where God has led me today, and I’m happy to lead his people in praise.

Will you live at peace with your pastors? Living at peace does not mean doing everything your pastor says. It does not mean that you are not allowed to ask questions. What it does mean is that you see how God has placed these people in your life, and you allow them to shepherd your soul with the staff of Scripture. You give them that privilege in your life.

On a practical level, living at peace means partnering together with your pastors to fulfill the gospel mission. We are called to make disciples, and pastors are glad when their people want to be discipled. They are happy when people want to be helped in discipling others.

This means that, as members of the church, you make yourself available to your pastors. You volunteer and offer your help where it is needed. You commit, and not only do you commit, but you also follow through on those commitments. You don’t hide or make things difficult for them. Instead, you remain open and willing to work together with your pastors.

Irreverent Worship

I’ve been leading worship music for a very long time, ever since I was in elementary school. I played piano during children’s worship, then continued leading music in junior high and eventually in high school. From sixth grade through twelfth grade, I was regularly leading music.

When you’ve been doing something for a long time, it’s easy to get a little lost—to forget the purpose of what you’re doing.

During my senior year, I started becoming somewhat irreverent toward God. When it comes to musical worship, I believe it should be a place of joy. There is joy in the Lord, and God uses music to help us express that joy. But there was a point when I started making worship more about the act of playing music and sounding good than about caring for God, recognizing His holiness, and shepherding people into His presence.

Correction from My Pastor

My youth pastor at the time, Pastor Jerry Hwang, corrected me. What I appreciated about his correction was that he did it kindly. He didn’t say, “Aaron, I need to talk to you,” in some intimidating way. He simply said, “Hey, can we talk?” He kindly shepherded me and guided me in the right direction.

I also appreciated that he didn’t tell me, “Aaron, you need to stop leading music. You’re totally wrong.” Instead, he said, in essence, “I appreciate what you’re doing. I still want you to serve God, but I want you to do it according to Scripture. The Bible says that we sing to the Lord, but He is still holy.”

And I got it. By God’s grace, I was able to partner with my pastor so that we could continue the work of worshiping God through music ministry. It was a deeply formative part of my life. To this day, whenever I lead music, I love to sing, clap, raise my hands, and experience the joy of worship. But I also don’t forget that God is holy. A lot of that understanding came from my youth pastor, Jerry, who taught me and loved me in a way that brought me back to God. That experience left a lasting impact on me.

How Can You Live at Peace with Your Pastors?

You can start applying this today by being present for your pastors. Notice them. Listen to them. Communicate with them. You can appreciate your pastors by listening to their sermons and taking notes. You can communicate with them by asking questions about the Bible and how to obey God in your life. In doing so, you esteem your pastors by allowing them to speak into your life.

Our pastors want to be our friends. I’m sure they enjoy talking with you about video games, Pokémon, and all kinds of other things. But I guarantee you that they would much rather talk with you about your soul—the state of your soul, your relationship with God, and the things that are truly important.

Your pastors are people, and just like anyone else, they want to be encouraged in the work and ministry they do. So get to know them, and let them get to know you. If you can encourage them, give them words of encouragement and affirmation. Tell them that they’re doing a good job and that you appreciate the work they’re doing in your life. We can come alongside our pastors to appreciate and esteem them.

Remember the Pastors Who Have Invested in You

Think back. You’ll probably remember pastors who have left an impact on your life. I was recently talking with my wife, Jess, and with our marriage small group about the pastors who have impacted me.

One pastor from my past was Pastor Jon Szeto. He came alongside Jess and me while we were dating and guided and shepherded us, showing us what a biblical marriage looked like. He played an important and formative role in our faith, and to this day, I’m thankful for his presence and for the way he showed God’s presence in my life.

Another pastor was Steve Loo. He believed in me and invested in me as a leader. He was the one who first taught me how to be a worship leader. Even though I told him I never wanted to do it, he was also the one who told me that one day I would preach sermons. I really appreciate the pastors who have invested in my life. So don’t forget the work your pastors have done in yours. Thank them. Encourage them. Love them.

This book gave me words to speak to my own children about the joy they bring me and the love that I have for them. It helped me see how I can always point them to the greater love of our heavenly Father. It also challenged me to cherish and make the most of the time I have with them.

At the end of the book, there is a section titled “From One Dad to Another.” Markins reflects on the parable of the prodigal son, noting that the father is present, patient, and pursues his sons. This book encourages dads to persevere in expressing their love for their children.

What is greatest challenge in the Christian life? I’m not sure there is one single answer, but this is at least one of the greatest challenges:

17 … I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, 19 and to know Christ’s love that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:17-19)

I see several challenges here:

1. To be rooted and firmly established in love, as the foundation of your faith

2. To comprehend with all the saints the full scope and dimensions of God’s love,

3. To know Christ’s love that surpasses knowledge — to feel it emotionally in your heart and not just intellectually in your head, to experience and personally encounter it, and

4. To be filled with the fullness of God, so much so that your faith is played out in real life.

Point four is actually the culmination—perhaps even one of the ultimate goals—of points 1–3: to have the love of Christ take hold of me so that it impacts everything about me—from how I love my wife and kids, to how I do my work, to how I engage in ministry. I pray that we would not lose sight of this challenge and that the Spirit would help us meet it and live it out.

Today, I want to share three reasons why I write Prayer Poems:

1. For me, to let Scripture truly sink into my heart. I want the Prayer Poem to be the most personal and human component of the sermon—a moment where I respond to God’s Word rather than simply explain it. It becomes my signature after every sermon, helping make each message personal and memorable.

2. For God, to worship Him in my own way. Once my sermon is ready and done, writing a Prayer Poem gives me an opportunity to step out from behind the role of preacher and simply become a worshiper. The Prayer Poem allows me to take everything I have discovered and turn it back toward God.

3. For the church, to encourage the congregation. Prayers after the sermon can sometimes feel like an afterthought or simply a recap of the main points of the message. I want to do something that truly adds to the moment—not offer a trite prayer to God, but something genuinely meaningful as a blessing.

The sermon is not merely an exposition of Scripture, but Scripture faithfully expressed through the particular person, experiences, and pastoral calling of the preacher. There are at least three ways that I try to distinguish my preaching voice: (1) being a layman, (2) being a reader, and (3) being a creative:

3. Being a “creative.” I use this term loosely because it can carry a negative connotation, and I don’t believe that the sermon is primarily a piece of “art.” I do think, however, that I can tap into my proclivities as a worship leader, songwriter, podcast interviewer, and content creator. I do believe that God is THE Artist, and his word, his truth, his beauty are the standards of all artistic merit. As a preacher, I can seek to emulate my Maker. This is probably most evident in the prayer poems I include at the end of my sermons. I want to use creativity not for its own sake, but as a means of helping people see, feel, and remember biblical truth. My hope is that the sermon will not merely communicate an idea, but will engage the imagination and move people toward worship.

2. Being a reader. While some people read as part of their job, I love to read for fun. And while some might stop reading after school, I consider myself a lifelong learner. Reading books and articles has become one of the primary ways I continue to grow in my understanding of Scripture, theology, ministry, and the world around me. I am not trying to establish myself as an expert, but to remain continually curious—asking questions, learning from others, and allowing what I read to shape the way I think and preach. What I learn inevitably finds its way into my sermons, not as an attempt to showcase my knowledge, but because I want to share with others what has helped me see God and his Word more clearly. I believe my skills gained as an avid reader has also impacted how I read the Bible. I bring it all to the table in the hopes of working well with God’s word.

1. Being a layman. In my case, the title “layman” can leave a negative taste in two ways: I am not seminary-trained, and I do not have a title at church. I aim to exploit these weaknesses and turn them into strengths. If I can clearly show that God is speaking to me and to the church through his Word, then my lack of academic credentials or professional status need not hinder the work of the Lord. I can also lean into the fact that there is no money tied to my preaching or ministry work. And I can relate to our congregation because I am truly living among them in the world. These aspects of being a layman will come through in my illustrations and applications.

Trying different approaches and drawing from my own experiences are both ways I’m trying to develop a distinctive preaching voice. I want to find the things that can make my sermons clearly my own. From the way I set up and craft my sermons to my personal prayer poems at the end, I want to develop a personal style for my sermons.

Anyone can preach an expository sermon. But what makes a sermon distinctly yours isn’t simply your ability to research and explain the text. It’s also your personal ability and inclination to reflect on it—to bring your own experiences, perspective, and personality into the sermon.

Another way to think about this is asking what is a sermon that only I can preach? Taking account my life experiences, my history with the church, what I’m interested in — what do I uniquely have to offer?

The sermon is not merely an exposition of Scripture, but Scripture faithfully expressed through the particular person, experiences, and pastoral calling of the preacher.

I’ve been thinking about challenging myself, and recently I’ve written about challenging myself with my electric guitar, leading our church youth in worship, how I read, how I write, how we worship, and in my marriage. Today, with my preaching.

When it comes to challenging myself in preaching, I’m like everyone else: I want to become a better orator and communicator. There are basic things, like writing and speaking mechanics, that can always be improved. But here are some aspects of preaching that I want to challenge myself in that others might not feel as inclined to pursue:

1. I challenge myself by trying different things. It’s easy to fall into the same style of preaching, but I try to vary even my own style, sometimes emphasizing theological themes, Asian American identity, or our own church history.

2. I challenge myself to use illustrations and examples from my own life. I want to show that I have seen God at work in my real life. I also want to share how I have applied—or at least attempted to apply—what I preach. To walk the talk.

3. I challenge myself by doing the same things. This might sound odd, but part of challenging myself is being consistent with certain things. I always try to have a clear gospel presentation and invitation. I also try to consistently speak about Christ’s return. And while the quality varies, prayer poems have also become a consistent part of my preaching.
