It seems we have developed an almost unconscious habit of attaching ethical significance to beauty itself, especially femininity, creating invisible equations that feel so intuitively true we rarely pause long enough to question whether they are true at all. We see a woman bare faced, wildly colored or grey hair, not a designer label in sight and instinctively associate her with authenticity. We see another who delights in makeup, luxury brands, cosmetic procedures, and dare I say, *hold your upcycled pearls and gasp*, carefully curated photographs using filters, and somewhere beneath awareness another story quietly emerges, perhaps she has not yet healed, perhaps she is seeking validation, perhaps she loves the reflection more than the self who inhabits it. What interests me is not whether these stories occasionally happen to be true. Human behavior is far too complex for absolutes. What interests me is our extraordinary confidence that such conclusions can be drawn in the first place.

<a class="image-link image2 We seem to want psychological wholeness to leave behind visible evidence, as though a person who has truly come home to themselves ought to possess a particular relationship with beauty, aging, appearance, or even vanity. Somewhere, without ever consciously agreeing to it, we have created an image of what an authentic person should look like. Authenticity has acquired a modest wardrobe. Integrity has acquired an untouched face. Healing has acquired an aesthetic, still dripping in white colonialism, but I don’t think many leaving their yoga mats of enlightenment are ready for that mirror. And because these associations have become so deeply embedded within our collective imagination, we often fail to notice that we are no longer observing another human being but measuring them against an internal mythology of our own making. Conveniently comfortable for our own insecurities.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" because ambiguity has always demanded more of us than certainty. It is considerably easier to believe that authenticity can be recognized than to accept that it cannot. Easier to imagine that we could identify integrity from across a room than to tolerate the unsettling reality that character is almost entirely invisible. The human psyche has always searched for symbols through which to simplify complexity, yet symbols become dangerous the moment we forget that they are symbols. They begin masquerading as evidence. We stop asking whether a woman wears makeup because she feels ashamed of herself, because she delights in artistry, because beauty is one of the languages through which she experiences aliveness, or simply because she enjoys it. Instead, we collapse countless possibilities into a single psychological narrative and congratulate ourselves for having seen through the illusion, never recognizing that the illusion may be our own. While ironically revering the beautifully adorned Frida Kahlo as a relatable icon.

I have often wondered whether authenticity has become one of the most misunderstood words in modern culture precisely because we have confused it with transparency. We have come to believe that to be authentic is to remove every layer, every adornment, every act of curation until what remains appears untouched, natural, almost primitive in its presentation. Yet there is nothing inherently authentic about refusing makeup any more than there is anything inherently inauthentic about wearing it. Neither cosmetics nor bare skin possess moral value. Neither wrinkles nor injectables reveal the depth of a person’s self-acceptance. Neither filters nor untouched photographs can tell us whether someone belongs to themselves or has abandoned themselves long ago. We continue searching for internal truth through external symbols because symbols are easier to interpret, and relate to, than consciousness.

<div little to do with appearance at all.

Perhaps authenticity is not found in what we remove, but in whether we betray ourselves in the process of becoming visible.

These are not synonymous inquiries.

There exists an equally important distinction between authenticity, identity, and integrity that I fear has quietly dissolved within contemporary discourse. Identity concerns expression. It is the endlessly creative conversation between the inner world and the outer one. Integrity concerns congruence. It asks whether the life I am living remains faithful to the values I profess. Authenticity, however, belongs somewhere even deeper. It is not merely expressing oneself honestly nor behaving consistently. It is the willingness to remain in intimate relationship with one’s own reality, even when that reality refuses to conform to the image others require in order to understand us. I suspect these words would be granted greater credibility had I delivered them wrapped in a cardigan, layered scarves, and oversized spectacles, the aesthetic shorthand for a trusting therapist Why do we keep asking it to?

Someone can be profoundly healed while still grieving the changes age brings to their face. Someone can possess unshakable self-worth while occasionally wondering whether they are beautiful. Someone can have traversed unimaginable psychological terrain while still finding delight in lipstick, glamour, filters, or fashion. None of these experiences negate the others. They coexist because human beings are not logical propositions to be solved but living paradoxes to be inhabited.

I sometimes wonder whether our greatest misunderstanding has never been beauty itself, but our insistence that the soul should always leave visible fingerprints upon the body. We want healing to look like something. We want authenticity to dress a certain way. We want integrity to become photographable. Yet perhaps the deepest transformations have always occurred in places the eye cannot enter. Perhaps that is precisely what makes them sacred. And perhaps our greatest act of humility is not learning to recognize authenticity by sight, but relinquishing the illusion that we ever could.

I will leave you with this final thought: What if authenticity is not a state to be attained, nor an image to be performed? What if it is a verb? A lifelong dance between unraveling and becoming, between releasing the selves we constructed to survive and returning, again and again, to the one who was waiting beneath them all along. I hope you will linger in the question long enough to discover that the deepest truths rarely arrive as conclusions, but as invitations. For it is often our certainty, not our uncertainty, that keeps us furthest from the truth.

Jusqu’à notre prochaine danse,

L. It is a peculiar thing that the less we know about another person, the more convinced we become that we understand them, as though certainty were not born from knowledge but from the discomfort we feel in the presence of mystery.

Living somewhat publicly while remaining deeply private has made me acutely aware of this phenomenon, because there exists an invisible space between what I choose to reveal and what remains sacred, and it is within that space that countless narratives are born. I have watched people confidently assign intention to an image, motive to a photograph, and identity to a fragment, never pausing to consider that perhaps what they are responding to has very little to do with me at all. It is as though the human mind cannot bear an unfinished portrait and instinctively reaches for its own paintbrush, completing the picture not with the colors of another person’s life but with whatever shades have accumulated from its own experiences.

A photograph of my body or learning that I am a beauty queen, for instances, can easily become evidence that I seek attention. That I’m shallow at best and performative at worst. But have you ever questioned why that judgment is so easy to agree upon? Because if attention is the currency through which someone has learned to interpret beauty, they cannot imagine another economy altogether. They cannot know that this body has been opened and closed by the hands of surgeons, that it carries thousands of sutures that resemble delicate ladders woven across my skin, not as disfigurements but as quiet monuments to every return from the threshold between life and death. They cannot know that after spending enough time wondering whether I would survive, inhabiting this body became something entirely different from displaying it. They cannot know that heavy is the crown for it was earned and worn in deep reverence for the pageant loving soul that I loved with all of me and lost to death by suicide and vowed to move my grief in to extending another’s walk. They cannot know that every time I dare to even be visible by doing any and every video, I risk being abused, incessantly, narcissistically, and unfortunately not virtually. And yet I return time and time again, in hopes to reach those that want to see beyond the veil of identity illusions and really want to do something about all this God damn, man made pain.

I have been told, both directly and indirectly, that I must not understand hardship because I rarely speak about mine, yet the irony is that my silence is not evidence of the absence of pain but one of its deepest consequences. There are certain landscapes that become sacred precisely because they were traversed alone, and not every mountain asks to become a tourist destination once it has been climbed. Some parts of our lives are not hidden because we are ashamed of them, but because they nourished us in solitude, and we instinctively know that not everything beautiful grows stronger when exposed.

Perhaps one day I will. When I feel safe enough. But as of today, I choose to remain faithful to what is sacred within me rather than surrender it to the inevitable projections and violence that often accompany virality in a culture still learning emotional maturity.

So you see, presence is often mistaken for performance by those who have never had to fight simply to remain present. I envy your gifted naivety in the absence of trauma.

All of this to simply say, I invite you to challenge your preconceived notions. Of everyone and every thing. Perhaps that is the invitation hidden within every encounter: to become the sort of person who instinctively leaves room for the unseen. To look upon another with the quiet humility that says, I do not know the private negotiations that shaped your nervous system, your scars, your silence, or your strength, but I will not reduce you to the limits of my imagination, nor yell from the edges of my wounds. Because in the end, the bridge between us has never merely been about discovering who another person is. It has always been about discovering who we become in the presence of what we do not yet understand.

So let me be your muse, or perhaps your greatest adversary, in the mirror I hold back to you. Let every small fragment of my life that I choose to share become less an invitation to judge me and more an invitation to question yourself. For none of it, from me, has ever been about validation. It has always been about conviction. The quiet, immovable conviction that it is possible to survive, to alchemize an almost endless procession of betrayals, losses, violations, and grief into an even deeper fidelity to oneself. To belong so completely to your own soul that you no longer require the world to misunderstand you less in order to love yourself more.

And if my presence, my body, my boundaries, my joy, or my silence provoke something within you, I hope you resist the temptation to make that feeling about me before first asking what it might be asking of you. Perhaps the very qualities you are most tempted to diminish are not evidence of another person’s shallowness, but evidence of a depth, an integration, or a freedom you have not yet given yourself permission to embody.

Allow me to extend my hand, my words, not from a place of superiority, but from one human heart to another. Not asking you to become anyone but whom you have always been beneath every wound that convinced you otherwise. And if my story serves any purpose at all, may it simply be to remind you that the deepest freedom we will ever know is not found in belonging to the world, but in belonging, unwaveringly, to ourselves. And only then, to each other.

Avec amour, toujou,

L. He leaned across the table to a beautiful young woman, explaining the world to her with the confidence of someone who had never questioned whether he had mistaken arrogance for intelligence. Every sentence was another reminder that if she wanted to become somebody, she should choose somebody like him. I quietly smiled to myself, grateful to be alone, while simultaneously rolling my eyes a million times. The Birmingham Masquerade. A peculiar kind of theater; an aging ego searching for admiration, a young woman negotiating her worth against the illusion of security, each mistaking a transaction for intimacy. Both trying to cultivate relevance they pretend is romance.

Across the street came another man.

Shirtless. Sunburned. Torn pants. A shopping cart overflowing with fragments of a life destroyed along the way. He spoke passionately to companions invisible to everyone but him, his words carried into the hot air like prayers only he could hear.

The man behind me scoffed.

“How tragic,” he declared. “He’s insane.”

I closed my journal, gathered my things, and turned toward them both and said, “No. One of you is yelling at the voices, and the other is yelling from them. The only tragedy is that only one of you knows they’re struggling.”

I made sure before I left to look in to her eyes in hopes she remembered her worth rather than negotiating it for currency. Then I walked away.

The homeless man was speaking to the reality his mind had created. The puffer fish of a man behind me was speaking from the illusion his ego had created. One had been overtaken by mental illness. The other by the intoxicating belief that wealth, status, and certainty are evidence of wisdom.

We have become remarkably skilled at recognizing madness when it wears poverty, while celebrating it when it wears a tailored suit, a luxury watch, red bottoms, and an expensive bottle of wine. Delusion wrapped in suffering earns our pity, yet delusion wrapped in status earns our admiration. Systematic brainwashing by design. Works like a charm.

I’ve thought about that moment ever since. Life places these quiet juxtapositions before me almost daily, and I’ve come to believe that mindfulness is what transforms coincidence into meaning. We don’t choose what appears before us, but we do choose the lens through which we understand it. And by nurture, or perhaps a return to my nature, I choose compassion.

Perhaps sanity has less to do with what we possess than with whether we possess the courage to question the stories we tell ourselves. Personally I believe the saddest prisons are the ones with beautiful views, because those inside rarely realize they’re trapped. I can speak to this with absolute certainty because I have spent decades sitting across from people behind the closed doors of my office, entrusted with the parts of themselves they hide from the world. I have listened to men and women whose names open doors, whose wealth commands admiration, whose lives are envied from a distance, confess that they would surrender every dollar they have ever earned for a single day free from the unbearable weight of never feeling enough and the depth of existential loneliness that creates.

The world has convinced us that prosperity and emotional freedom travel together. They do not. I have yet to discover a currency capable of purchasing self-worth, peace, or genuine intimacy. In the end, the true measure of a life has never been the wealth we accumulate, but the depth of our character, the tenderness of our heart, and the courage to meet ourselves without illusion.

I wish for the man across the street enough resources to provide him safety and stability to discern between illusions and reality. I wish for the man behind me enough of life’s conditions to cultivate humility to discern between illusions and reality. And I wish for myself, and you, all of the above.

Così è la vita,

LV

<a class="image-link image2 We survive violence, abuse, betrayal, grief, loss, illness, poverty, war, abandonment, heartbreak, and despair. We survive the death of people we cannot imagine living without. We survive having our innocence stolen, our trust shattered, our dreams destroyed, and our entire world turned upside down.

And somehow, we keep going. And going. And going…

Not because we are unaffected, fearless, or unbreakable (as much as the motivational grifters want you to believe). We keep going because of our the decision to keep living even in the presence of suffering. The darkness must coexist with our light afterall.

I see you waking up with a broken heart and choosing to face another day. Carrying grief that never fully leaves while still allowing ourselves to love. Rebuilding after everything has fallen apart. And after all that still finding meaning when life has stripped away every certainty you once held. Same love, same.

As a psychologist, I have come to believe that the greatest misunderstanding about resilience is the idea that strong people do not fall apart. We do. Sometimes every. damn. day. (Or night in my experience) But our strength is truly measured by our willingness to continue despite our suffering. Individually and collectively.

The human spirit was never meant to be invulnerable. Its greatness lies in its ability to endure, adapt, heal, and transform pain into wisdom. Alchemize baby. Alchemists we are.

Every day, we accomplish extraordinary acts of courage that no one applauds. We get out of bed after devastating losses. We leave abusive relationships. We start over after failure. We learn to trust again after betrayal, and betrayal, and more fucking betrayal. We choose hope after despair. And somehow continue writing chapters we never wanted to live through.

And that my friends is true resilience.

Perhaps the most humbling truth of all is that the list of what we can survive is far longer than the list of what we believe we can.

There is a depth of strength within each of us that remains hidden until life demands it. Again and again, humanity reveals that we are far more resilient than we know, and often far stronger than we ever wanted to have to become. And that dance, of breaking and becoming, is this thing called life.

How brutally beautiful.

Thank you for sharing this life with me. I would not be standing where I am today without you, and the meaning we’ve found, the memories we’ve made, and the life we’ve created would not exist in the same way. And if you’re reading this going ‘but you don’t fucking know me so this is bullshit?!’ Ha, see I do know you, because I am you, and you are me, and we are we. The stories of who you are add context, but even without knowing your name or your favorite cereal or if you drool on your pillow at night…I know you’ve held doors for strangers that think of you when they’re on their last breath, I know you’ve smiled at babies and puppies and birds declaring their midnight survival with morning songs and in your presence they knew God is real. Which God? All of them and then some. I know you’ve forgiven people that didn’t deserve it, protected people that needed it, and saved more people than you’ll ever realize. Don’t believe me? Your follows here have single handedly helped me reach thousands of people that have written me about how we’ve saved their lives. They say I have, but I know it’s WE, because without you, I am merely a single woman, but together, we are everything. See, told you I knew you. A true earth angel YOU are. And don’t you ever forget it! ♥️🌎♥️

The Sacred Art of Trust

The Longing Beneath Everything

The Interior | L. Returning to ourselves. Finding each other. Belonging not only to one another, but to life herself.

Perhaps this is why so many healing practices, spiritual and faith based traditions, and psychological frameworks ultimately circle the same sacred territory in different languages. Beneath the complexity, the golden thread shows us guidance toward the restoration of TRUST.

Because if love is the core nucleus, then trust is the bridge of possibility that makes love palpable.

Without trust, love cannot fully be received. It can be chased, tested, feared, controlled, performed for, or doubted. A lot of doubting. The nervous system will remain braced for impact and ultimate abandonment. The soul remains guarded against exposure. We search for proof where there can only ever be surrender.

Which means so much of healing is not actually about becoming someone new or improved. It is about slowly relearning trust after rupture.

Trust in ourselves to navigate it all.

Trust in one another to experience our growing edges.

Trust in life itself to be brutally beautiful and violently gentle until the last blink.

Ultimately learning to trust that we do not have to earn our right to exist through performance, perfection, or self-betrayal. That love was never meant to be a reward for becoming someone else.

Maybe that is the deeper wound beneath so much suffering: not simply the absence of love, but the loss of trust that love is safe, real, or lasting. That someone out there actually exists that will love us without betrayal.

And maybe, just maybe, healing is the gradual remembering that it is possible to be fully ourselves and still remain worthy of it all. That what we give beyond the armor, will be reciprocated in its fullest depth.

Life doesn’t guarantee a happily ever after. But if we learn to love well and trust ourselves enough to hold both the beauty and the pain, life somehow gives us exactly what we need.

<a It is what happens beneath it. It is the slow restructuring of reality. It is waking up one day unable to remember where your own voice ends and another begins. It is being guided so subtly that you no longer experience it as guidance at all. You experience it as truth.

Perhaps that is where we find ourselves now.

We have embraced the comforting belief that social media simply reflects us, that our feeds faithfully return more of what we value, more of what we seek, more of who we are. We have accepted the story that we are the architects of our own experience, creating our realities with every follow, pause, and reaction.

Mirrors are passive, but algorithms are not.

They do not merely reveal reality; they participate in constructing it. They shape, narrow, select, and reinforce. Somewhere in that exchange, the viewer begins believing they are choosing what they see while failing to notice that what they see is also choosing them.

Every pause becomes information. Every emotional reaction becomes data. Every moment of attention enters a conversation we cannot hear. And slowly, almost imperceptibly, the architecture around us begins to shift.

Not all at once.

One perception, certainty, black and white box at a time.

Another unconscious invitation to believe that disagreement is evidence of moral failure rather than evidence of different human experiences colliding with one another.

A world once filled with gradients begins hardening into opposing forces: right and wrong, victim and villain, ally and enemy. And a pathological system requires dichotomized ways of thinking. We’re basically making it easy for them to abuse us.

Human beings have always been vulnerable to this because certainty has always felt safer than ambiguity. The mind prefers clean edges. Complexity demands effort. Nuance asks us to remain inside discomfort longer than we instinctively want to.

But reality itself used to interrupt us. We encountered people we disagreed with at dinner tables, in neighborhoods, in ordinary life. We lived among contradiction. We had no choice.

Now entire realities can be curated around emotional preference. And what concerns me is not disagreement itself. Disagreement has never frightened me. Friction can sharpen us. It can stretch us. It can expose the limits of our own understanding.

What unsettles me is something deeper.

I am witnessing a growing belief that information itself should conform to individual reality.

If I feel it, it must be true.

If it hurts me, it must be harmful.

If it challenges me, it must be wrong.

If it exists outside my experience, it must be invalid.

The distinction between what feels true and what is true has blurred so well, we don’t even recognize the distortion because it’s been internalized and metabolized in to a comfy world of ‘me core’.

Truth has never signed a contract promising emotional comfort. Reality has never arranged itself around our personal narratives.

Some things remain true even when they unsettle and challenge us, and some things remain partially true while remaining painfully incomplete.

Yet we are losing our ability to live inside these spaces. We are losing our tolerance for unfinished thoughts. We are losing patience with ambiguity.

And perhaps worst of all, we are losing depth.

Because depth requires stillness. It requires curiosity. It requires enough humility to say, “there may be something here I do not yet understand”.

Outrage, certainty, and righteousness asks for none of these things. They travel faster than contemplation ever will, spread faster than nuance, and are always louder than complexity.

Which leaves authentic voices trapped in an impossible tension: trying to speak carefully in a world built for reaction. No matter how thoughtfully someone attempts to articulate the growing edge, holding contradictions, honoring complexity, leaving room for uncertainty, the backlash often arrives before reflection ever has the opportunity.

Genuine people bow out of using their voices online because the cost of being a victim of social media’s narcissistic abuse outweighs compassionate intention, which then allows narcissistic creators to step right in to fill the void. Those least willing to question themselves often become reinforced most powerfully, standing firmly inside their own righteousness, increasingly convinced of their own infallibility. And viola, a perfect match made in narcissistic hell and you don’t even realize it until it’s too late.

All because systems rewarding fragmentation eventually teach us to fragment ourselves.

And perhaps that is the deepest grief underneath all of this. That we may be forgetting something profoundly human: how to remain in the presence of complexity long enough to recognize ourselves in one another.

For all our technological advancement, wisdom still seems to ask the same ancient question:

Can we bear the discomfort of uncertainty long enough to see each other clearly?

<div And missing you. Many of you would be surprised how I notice every like, comment, even energetic pings and how I send you love throughout my days. Not you? Yes you. Just because you don’t comment, doesn’t mean I don’t see you or feel you. I do, I have, and I always will. 🩵 The comments from so many of you, in support of me, the way some of you came looking for me when I wasn’t showing up on your feed, it reached me. It matters more than I can explain simply. Genuinely. Touched my heart to its core.

This time, this sacred pause, it hasn’t been empty. If anything, it’s been almost too full. But a good full.

Something has been transmuting in me and I don’t have clean language for it yet. I can see how things connect now in a way that feels almost obvious. The way we carry pain, how we adapt to it, how it shapes everything, and at the same time, how it could shift. Not just emotionally, but across everything. The body, the mind, the way we understand healing, even the parts people call spiritual. It doesn’t feel separate to me anymore.

And I know how that sounds when I write it. Abstract, aloof, poetically dramatic, yet not at all. But that’s part of why I’ve been quiet.

Because there’s a version of this that feels so real, so grounded, so precise inside of me…and then there’s the version that comes out in words, and it feels too small, too dull, too minuscule to describe this kaleidoscope of consciousness and the pathway through it all.

So I’ve been sitting in that void space, the bridge, the liminal space us shrinks like to say to sound smart 😉

I am somewhere between knowing something deeply and not yet trusting that I can fully carry it into language in a way that actually lands, yet. The dance between trust in full self and insecurity in human capabilities is so real. And so annoying.

At the same time as I make sense of the ethers of our existence, I’ve been moving through my own bewildering acceptance and grief. Real kind that break the hearts open fully. The kind that sits in my body and makes me say ‘to hell with it all’ about 1000 times each day. As so much around me crumbles, I sit here in the bittersweet reality that it all coincides with the anniversary of the tragic death of a beloved tonight. I am comforted with my knowing my former trauma informs my steadiness now. Somehow, right alongside the pain, there are moments where what I’m seeing feels so clear it makes me laugh. Not because it’s light, just because it fits in a way I can’t unsee. Aha moments created by fuck this moments that create the aha moments. Of course, it’s the only way! “The wound is the place where the light enters you”, my homie Rumi once said.

I don’t have an update or conclusion for you. I don’t have something packaged or finished. I’ve stopped myself from making 1000 videos in reaction to the world’s chaos the past two weeks because that’s my old muscle. The me before the now me. And I just need to trust in this becoming without fear of missed chances. I do think I’ll be able to create many paths to the same door with all of this. Whether that’s simple videos, longer form content, courses, books, all of the above or maybe something not yet listed.

I just didn’t want to stay silent without saying, I’m here. I feel you. I’m trusting this process, while also cursing it out bc this Slavic woman hates trusting a process that isn’t clearly defined and measured. 😑. And also knowing that’s the only way. I feel a little like Einstein in his bubble baths before his eureka E=mc2 moment (except I’m way dumber). And I’m not stealing the work from a wife like he did, big up’s to his Serbian 🇷🇸 wife for being the brains behind the man. 🥂👸 #kraljica Now let’s hope the eureka moment arrives before the psychopathic pedophile puppet in charge of everything and nothing nukes everyone. (Sorry, morbid humor tied to real anxiety 😬🫩🫠😘)

Thank you for not letting me disappear. Especially because most of me wants to. But I won’t. Because this is bigger than me. This is for us. And well I’m a ride or die through & through. (For those with integrity).

As always, Fuck Donald Trump! Protect children at all costs! No exceptions. No mercy. Justice now!

Love love love you!!

LV 💜

P.S. Yes, I went back to the dark side & it makes my constantly changing eye color more obvious & ppl recognize that I’m weirder than the average…thank Goddess, happily weirder 💇🏻‍♀️🖤🐈‍⬛

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
