HTC finally launched its Vive Eagle smart glasses, coming to the US, Europe, the UK, and Australia with orders open starting today. The glasses have a 12 megapixel camera with 3K video capture, open-ear speakers, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, and run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 chip. HTC has two frame styles, Rounded and Squared, in several colors with clear and sunglasses versions.

The glasses include two years of VIVE AI Plus, which brings ChatGPT and Gemini to the glasses. HTC says that any data collected will not be used to train any models and requests from the glasses are anonymized. HTC also built in privacy protections around the LED light that signals the glasses are recording, including an automatic shutoff when the LED is obscured or the glasses are removed. If a bystander says something to the effect of “stop filming,” the glasses will stop recording as well. The base model will sell for $500 while a photochromic lens version runs $600.

JENN: If you have feedback about anything that gets brought up on the show… Get in touch with us on the socials. @DTNSshow on X, Instagram, Threads!, Blue Sky, and Mastodon. This is analogous to when Microsoft bought GitHub. That’s exactly why we have leaders and judges to deal with the hard cases. No one said to be sloppy with your security, but even the best systems can be compromised, and then you have to weigh benefits and risks (short- and long-term) to decide what to do. You all pretty much stuck to financial situations, but a hospital could lose medical records necessary to treat patients, or a judicial system might lose files that protect witnesses. There is always more to consider than just a simple rule, as well-meaning as it might be for the great majority of cases.

I use tap-to-pay sometimes, but while not every system allows you to use your phone, every credit card system allows you to use your card. There are still many restaurants that don’t bring a mobile terminal to the table at the end of the meal, and you’re not going to hand that person a handful of cell phones (which they couldn’t unlock anyway) to take back to the central payment terminal. There are even some small legacy retailers around me who still require swiping. I have no problem using my phone when I can, but not everywhere is San Francisco and not every merchant is ready to deal with phones.

Being able to buy a game, finish it, and then sell it on the secondary market allows you to recover some of the cost. The disc-to-digital shift could certainly lead to that ability going away, especially because game vendors are generally not thrilled with the secondary market.

So good job, Roger. You win the prize this week.

- Doug

-----------

Alisdair Edwards

Is Huyen in witness protection or a whistleblower? Fight the good fight!

-----------

John Murray III

Interesting dialogue…

I think the best thing is Roger Corp. May I request part of the Patreon contribution goes to fund this initiative? I think the stock prices will go through the roof…

Then again, I don’t think I am the right person to provide investment advice. 🙄

------

Jay

Thanks Tom! I'm still in California for another week, flying home late next Saturday night on a red-eye flight back to London. I met with Tom and several people at Worldcon in Anaheim on Thursday night for the Sword & Laser podcast meet-up. He was interested to know how I got on using the Timeshifter app for combating jet jag. Unfortunately, I didn't use it for my trip here but I do plan to use it for my trip home. As travelling east is generally worse for me, it will be useful to give it a go for the return trip.
