SEO Squeeze #111: Watermark Panic, Round Two.

Hey friend,

Two weeks ago I told you the AI watermark was nothing to panic about (which is still true) but it’s clear that you might still be a little scared of it. It is spooky season after all. 👻

So here’s the longer answer for those of you that don’t trust the heads of search saying that this won’t affect your rankings.

But first, a quick catch up:

Since August 2nd, AI companies have to mark the text their tools write so a machine can read it. Claude does it now, Gemini already did, and Google just made its visible label optional while keeping the invisible one in place.

→ TLDR: The AI watermark is invisible and there’s no public tool to check it.

Here’s the part almost nobody is talking about: Anthropic says the mark means Claude PROCESSED the text, not that Claude wrote it. So if you write the whole thing yourself and run it through for a quick proof, yes, it’s still marked.

So what are we trying to say? When you get your own thinking down first and let the tool clean it up after, the ideas stay yours. Google has said for years it doesn’t care how content gets made, it cares whether the content is any good.

Chances are your readers can tell the difference between good content and… well crap, without needing to check for an AI watermark.

We are going to do today’s squeeze a little differently. Because although I could space out these tips over the next 6 weeks, it’s clear you want this information right now. So who am I to hold the people back.

Here’s the tea. This is what I recommend you do if you want to keep using AI as your writing friend. (which in my opinion is still a smart move)

#1. Write your next post messy and by hand, then hand it over. Get your thinking down first, however ugly it looks. Then let the tool tighten it up. This is exactly why we start with an outline and teach you all about how to do that inside SEO On Tap.

#2. Stop hunting for a removal trick. Anthropic said the only thing that fully clears the mark is replacing every single word, and if you’re rewriting the whole thing you didn’t save any time. Anyone out there who is giving you a secret removal tool is just another “SEO bro”. (Sorry I had to say it)

#3. Put a human on the page. Add an author name, a photo, and two lines on why you know this stuff to your top three blog posts. (Davey and Krista have a great blog on this that’s worth reading!)

#4. Add one thing AI couldn’t have known. A real number from your business, a client story, a photo you took. Open your best performing posts and add one.

#5. Read it out loud before you publish. If you wouldn’t say it to a potential client or customer standing in front of you, then it’s not in your voice. Fix it.

#6. Write a one-sentence AI policy. Something like “I write everything myself and use AI to proof and format.” Stick it on your About page or in a new legal AI policy document.

There’s your homework this week. Pick one or two actions above and keep creating great content. Chances are, if you care about this mark then your content is already in good hands… because you CARE.

And if you are still freaking out, well, then just stop using AI and go back to how we all used to write blogs. We all survived back then, and we will survive again.

But if you are curious whether we will still use and recommend AI? The answer is yes. But the ideas, the content, the strategy, the voice… it’s all still ours. The only thing AI is helping us with is efficiencies. 🫳🎤

SEO Squeeze #110: The Date That's Costing You The Click.

Your best blog post has a date on it, and there’s a good chance that date says 2022. 🫣

Google reads a few different signals to figure out when your page was published or last updated, including your structured data (1), the date visible on the page (2), and the lastmod value (3) in your sitemap.

If half of that was gibberish, that’s okay because I only want you to focus on #2.

The one sitting right under your headline is the one you can fix in ten seconds. So when your post is stamped March 2022 and the result above yours says last month, you’re losing the clicks.

Plus even humans are reading these dates, not just bot crawlers. When someone lands on your post, sees a date from four years ago, they start wondering whether the content you are writing about is even relevant anymore.

Google’s guidance here is simple. Put a date on the page where people can see it, feature it prominently, and label it with something like “Published” or “Last updated.”

⚠️ A Quick Warning: Google also says not to artificially freshen a page without adding significant information or some other real reason for the freshening. So you don’t get to swap 2022 for 2026 and call it a day. You have to change something real inside that post first.

Here’s your homework…

1. Pick your three most important blog posts. Open Search Console, head to Performance, then click the Pages tab, sort by clicks, and grab the top three.

OR… If Search Console makes your eye twitch, pick the three posts you’d most want a dream client or customer to land on instead.

2. Change something real inside it. And if you don’t know where to start, then grab this prompt and plug it into your favorite AI tool (ChatGPT or Claude):

I run a [type of business] and I wrote the blog post below in [month, year]. I want to update it so it’s useful again. I am not looking for a rewrite.

First, search the web and check whether anything in this post has changed since I wrote it.

Then give me:

1. Anything in the post that’s now out of date or wrong, including any tool, price, feature, or link that changed.
2. Three things someone searching this topic today would expect to find that my post is missing.
3. One paragraph I could add that would make this post more useful than it was before, written in the same voice as the rest of the post.

Be specific to what’s in my post. Skip the general blogging advice, and do not rewrite the post for me.

Here’s the post:
[paste your whole blog post OR include the link]

3. Add the visible date up top. Put it under your headline and above the body of the post, and label it so nobody has to guess. “Last updated August 2026”.

4. Clear out the competing dates. If that post has a date mentioned anywhere else, clean that up! So you don’t contradict yourself and confuse Google.

There’s your homework, get at least one done today and the next two before next Sunday… mmmmkkkay!?

SEO Squeeze #109: Open If You Write With AI. 👀

If you write anything with Claude, you may have seen the headlines this week. Claude is now watermarking every word it writes.

Cue the internet losing its dang mind.

Here’s what happened:

On August 2, the EU started requiring AI companies to mark AI-generated content in a way machines can read. Anthropic (the maker of Claude) signed on, along with about 190 other companies, so ChatGPT and Gemini are heading the same direction. The mark is invisible.

Three things it does NOT do:

It doesn’t tell anyone your name, your business, or which chat it came from.
It doesn’t change who owns your content. It’s still yours.
It doesn’t touch your Google rankings. Google isn’t part of this, and Google has never penalized a page for being written with AI. Google penalizes unhelpful pages, which is a completely different thing.

The big question: Could someone just rewrite the text to hide the watermark?

Anthropic said it’s possible, but “light editing probably won’t remove the watermark completely,” while “a complete rewrite where every word is replaced will.”

Well in my opinion, if you are completely re-writing your content than what’s the point of using Claude to help you be more efficient?

So if you plan to keep writing with AI— which we do btw— than read this:

In other words, keep doing what you are doing. Everything is going to be just fine.

SEO Squeeze #108: Introducing Preferred Sources!

There’s a new setting inside Google that lets your biggest fans put YOU at the top of their search results.

It’s called Preferred Sources.

When someone marks your site as one of their preferred sources, your pages get a little “Preferred“ label and show up higher for them, not just in a regular Google search, but inside AI Overviews and AI Mode too.

Most of SEO comes down to Google’s algorithm deciding if you’re worthy. This one flips that. Your reader decides.

A quick note: It won’t show for every search, and it doesn’t touch your rankings. But it does give the people who already love you an easy way to see more of you. And we like that right, friend?

The best part? You hand your audience a link and they tap a button.

Click that box (if you decide we are a trusted source of course!) And voila… you just made us a trusted source in your Google.

1. Grab your add-me link. It’s your website dropped into this: google.com/preferences/source?q=yoursite.com. Paste yours into a browser to test it, and you’ll see your name pop up with a checkbox.

2. Send it to your audience. Drop that link in your next newsletter, an Instagram story, or a pinned post, with one plain line like “Tap here and check the box to see more of my stuff in your Google and AI searches.”

3. Add a few of your own faves while you’re in there. Search the sites and creators you trust most and check their boxes too.

P.S. This works best when you’re publishing fresh content, since Google leans toward sites that keep showing up. Consider this your nudge to hit publish more often!

SEO Squeeze #107: Track Your Instagram In Google, Finally!

Google just added something we’ve been waiting for for yearssssss. 👀

As of July 7, you can watch which Google searches are leading people to your Instagram and TikTok posts. Not just your website. Your actual social posts.

You’ve been posting on Instagram for years, and this is the first time Google will tell you when one of those posts actually pulled someone in from a search.

And it will all live inside Google Search Console.

So here’s how to set it up:

Go to Google Search Console (Google’s free tool that shows what people type to find you) and click “Add property.”
Look for the new social options and pick yours: Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube. (If you don’t see them yet, you’re not doing anything wrong. Google’s rolling this out over the next few weeks, so check back if it’s not there today.)
Follow the prompts to connect your account and confirm it’s yours. This is the step that proves you’re really you.
Give it about 48 hours to start pulling data. It only tracks going forward, so the sooner you connect it, the sooner you build up a history.
Open the Performance report and see which Google searches are bringing people to your posts. Sort by clicks to find your sleeper hits.

A quick heads up so the numbers don’t throw you. This only counts the people who found your post through Google, so it’s a much smaller number than your in-app views. A TikTok with a million views in the app might show just a handful here, and that’s exactly right.

This report is answering one question, how many people found that post through a Google search.

SEO Squeeze #106: One less thing on your list.

This week I am giving you an item you can cross off your list instead of add to it. You’re welcome. 😜

You might’ve seen people talking about something called an LLMs.txt file. (or maybe not lol) If that reads like total gibberish, you’re most likely not alone.

Most business owners have never heard of it, and thankfully, you never need to.

An LLMs.txt file is a little text file some “SEO gurus” swore you had to add to your website so AI tools like ChatGPT would find you.

The good news is you don’t need it, and Google said so themselves.

In their own June guidance, they spelled out that you don’t need any special AI file or code to show up in Google or its AI answers, because Google doesn’t even use them.

One study of 137,000 sites with the file found the AI bots basically ignored it.

If you’ve still got the 10 minutes to-do itch, do this:

1. Check in 10 seconds, if you are curious. Type your website address with /llms.txt on the end, right into your browser bar. If you get an error page, perfect. You don’t have one, and you’re done.

2. If one does show up, leave it alone. Some website builders and plugins add it for you. It won’t help you rank and it won’t hurt you, so don’t spend your day ripping it out.

3. Put the real 10 minutes here instead. Read the very first line of your homepage out loud, and make sure it says in plain words what you do and who you help. That clear, human sentence is the thing Google and the AI tools actually read, and fixing it does more for your AI visibility than any text file could.

And remember the stuff that moves the needle for your business is almost never the stuff that “gurus” panic you into buying.

SEO Squeeze #105: We're Halfway Through 2026. Is Your Site?

We just crossed the halfway point of 2026 (how on earth are we halfway through the year!?), which feels like a great excuse to talk about a sneaky little thing hiding on your website right now…

A leftover “2025”

Or maybe a 2024 or a 2023… 🫣

Maybe it’s in a headline. Maybe it’s tucked in your copyright footer, or on a “2025 pricing” page you fully meant to update back in January and then, you know, life happened and your kid needed something and the day got away from you.

An old year on your website is one of those tiny things that does damage without you even realizing it. It whispers “nobody’s home here anymore,” and that’s not a whisper that you want Google or AI bots to hear.

The best part about all of this is that there is a real easy way to find out if you have any sneaky old dates.

HERE’S HOW:

1. Run this search.

Head to Google and type site:yourwebsite.com [year] (swap in your real domain). Google will hand you every single page where that old year is still hanging out.

2. Walk the list and spot what matters.

Hit the places that count, your homepage, your services, a blog or pricing pages, any headline or page title with the year stamped right on it. Leave the stuff that’s about 2025 on purpose.

3. Swap it to 2026 + Update it, or pull it out.

Change the year where it should be current, or just delete it when the line reads fine without one, then hit publish. Done and dusted.

But you may have to update the content so that it’s truly fresh. Let me give you two quick examples.

This post below “SEO Updates in 2025”… if I were to just update this post without changing the content the entire thing would be a lie. So in order to make this relevant, I’d need to make sure the content reads through what’s happening in 2026.

However this post on the best Conferences is one we originally made in 2023 but continue to update multiple times a year.

SEO Squeeze #104: You Might Be Competing With Yourself.

For today’s squeeze I wanted to share a bit more about a question I get asked a lot. It goes like this…

You niched down, you write about the same handful of topics on purpose, and now you’re a little worried all those similar pages are competing against each other on Google.

Did you know that showing up more than once for the same keyword is not the problem.

The fancy name for two pages stepping on each other is called “keyword cannibalization”.

All it means is Google can’t tell which of your pages to rank, so it shrugs and ranks neither one well.

The word that matters is differentiated. Same keyword doing a different job on each page and you’re golden. Same keyword doing the same job twice, that’s where it gets messy.

Watch this. I searched site:duocollective.com SEO keywords (more on that little trick in a sec) and a whole lot of pages popped up. 👀

But even with pages of results for the same keyword, I am not concerned about keyword cannibalization. Because every one of them does a different job. One’s a how-to guide for choosing a keyword. One’s a podcast episode. One’s our masterclass page. One’s a beginner guide. Same keyword, four totally different reasons to click.

Ready to run yours? You can do it in about 60 seconds.

1. Search your own site.

Go to Google and type site:yourwebsite.com then your keyword, like site:yourwebsite.com fall wedding.

→ That little site: part tells Google to only show pages from your website.

2. Eyeball what comes back.

If two or three pages are clearly trying to answer the same question the same way, that’s your overlap.

3. Give it the one-line test.

For each page, see if you can say in one sentence why a reader would click that one instead of the other. If you can, they’re differentiated and you’re good. If both pages give the same answer, they’re competing, and that’s your sign to either sharpen one into a different angle or fold them into one stronger page.

P.S. If you run the check and find a big ol’ pile of overlap, do NOT panic-delete anything. Pick the two pages that bug you most and start there.

SEO Squeeze #103: Finally See If You're In AI Search

Hey friend…

Remember that sneaky little Google Search Console trick I shared a little while back? The one for finding out whether you were showing up in Google’s AI answers, where you had to filter and squint and basically play detective?

Well, Google just made our lives easier. 🙌

As of June 3rd, there’s a brand-new Generative AI performance report rolling out right inside Search Console.

Translation: instead of hacking your way to the data, you get a dedicated view showing exactly how often your pages pop up inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. No more guessing whether AI search even knows you exist.

Here’s the tiny catch: Google’s rolling this out slowly, so you might not see it yet.

→ Full transparency: we don’t see it in our own account yet either! So if your tab isn’t there, you’re in very good company. We’re keeping our eyes peeled and you should too. Heres how:

Go take a look:

Open Google Search Console and click into your website.
Click “Performance,” then “Search results” (your home base for all things ranking.)
Look for a “Generative AI” view or tab. If it’s there, jackpot. You’ll see impressions, your top pages, and which countries are finding you through AI.
Don’t see it yet? No sweat. Use the search-query filter trick from before to spot your AI appearances the old-fashioned way until your turn comes around.

What does this mean?? Google is officially treating AI search as its own thing worth measuring. That means your visibility in AI answers is now something you can watch, track, and grow on purpose, instead of crossing your fingers and hoping.

SEO Squeeze #102: Google Killed FAQ Snippets This Month

Squeezing in before Sunday ends… 😜

Google quietly pulled the plug on something this month.

Do you remember those expandable FAQ drop downs that used to show up under some Google results? Well… they are gone. As of this month, Google stopped showing them and is shutting down the reports behind them.

Here’s the exact dates:

May 7, 2026: FAQ rich results officially stopped appearing in Google Search results.
June 2026: Google dropped the FAQ search appearance, rich result reports, and support in the Rich Results Test. (if you’ve ever added Schema before, then you know what this is. If not, don’t worry about it— it’s gone anyway!)

Here’s what that experience used to look like on Google…

Well instead of just going poof, the FAQs got a promotion.

AI search loves clean question-and-answer content. Which means your FAQ section isn’t a Google-dropdown trick anymore. It’s one of the simplest ways to get your business quoted when someone asks the AI a question.

Who needs an FAQ drop down when the AI overview looks this good, right?

So what does this mean for you?

Well let’s focus on giving one of your pages a 10-minute FAQ glow-up for AI. I’d start right here:

Pick your most important page
Brain-dump 3–4 real questions your customers actually ask you — on a call, in your DMs, in their first email.
Answer each one in 2–3 plain sentences. Lead with the answer — don’t bury it three lines down.
Use the words your customer would type, not industry jargon. AI matches the language people actually use.

Now hop to it and update a page with some FAQ content AI bots will love.

P.s. Don’t delete your old FAQ structured data code, just because it’s not a rich result anymore. Google’s still keeping it to understand your pages.

SEO Squeeze #101: Google Changed Its Search Box. 😱

Did you catch the news last week??

Google just announced “The biggest upgrade to its search box in 25 years” (source)

Oh the drama that must be happening inside the SEO bros chats.

However, it’s actually a pretty big deal.

Google changed its search box. gasp

So what does this mean?

Instead of typing a few keywords into Google and hoping for the best, people can now type full questions, drop in a photo, upload a file, or even share a video— and Google’s AI figures out what they actually need.

It also remembers past searches, so follow-up questions actually make sense in context.

Oh, and those AI Overviews you’ve been seeing pop up at the top of search results? They’re merging with AI Mode into one seamless experience. So instead of users having to opt into AI Mode separately, it’s all just... Google now.

The TLDR version…
Search just got a whole lot smarter, and people are going to start asking it way more specific, conversational questions to find businesses like yours.

Which brings me to your 10-minute power move 💪

Go audit your About page

It sounds like the least exciting thing I could tell you to do right now after such a big change. But hear me out… most people write their About page once and then never touch it, and right now it might be the most underleveraged page on your entire site.

Google has been putting more weight than ever on E-E-A-T signals (Remember? Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness)

Your About page is where ALL FOUR of those live.

Here’s your 10-minute About page audit:

Google yourself: Type site:yourwebsite.com/about (or whatever your about page url slug is) in the search bar and see what snippet Google is actually pulling. Is it indexed? Does it make you sound like the expert you are?
Update your bio: include your years of experience, your credentials, or simply why you do what you do. Specificity = credibility in today’s search.
Add (or refresh) your photo: a current, real photo of you. (emphasis on real, not an AI headshot) Real humans build real trust with both Google and your visitors.
Link to one credible external mention: aka a backlink… a podcast feature, a press hit, a guest article. Even one reference signals authority.
Make sure it’s clear who you help: don’t just say what you do. Say who you serve and what changes for them when they work with you. Do you have an I help statement? We loveeeee building these into our brand voice projects!

Go give your About page some love today and then reward yourself by testing the new search box experience on Google.

Maybe start with… “who is the best [what you do] for [who you serve]?” and see what Google serves up. You might be surprised. 👀

→ Open a new tab right now.

→ Type this into Google exactly as written 👇

site:yourwebsite.com

(obviously swap in your actual URL)

→ Hit enter.

What comes up are every single page Google has found and indexed on your website. Every blog post. Every service page. Every product page. Every about page. All of it.

P.s. those three dots next to your URL will tell you exactly when Google indexed your website— see our “was indexed by Google more than 10 years ago”

So, what’s your number? Here’s what it means:

0 results: Google cannot find your website at all. You are invisible. Not just to Google, but to any AI tool that pulls from the web. This is an urgent issue.
1-5 results: Google has only scratched the surface of your site. Someone in our training last week got 2 results and asked “what does this mean?” It means there’s content that Google can’t find (unless you only have a two page website).
10-50 results: You’re indexed but not fully. Depending on how big your site is, this could be totally fine or a sign that some pages are being missed (maybe an entire category set of pages— i.e. all your blogs, a product category, a portfolio, etc.).
50+ results: Google knows you exist! Now the question becomes are those pages actually ranking for the right things and bringing in the right people?

The goal isn’t just more results. Even though that is step one.

It’s making sure the right pages are being found by the right people. The kinda people who convert.

And If Google can’t find your pages… Well then either can ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or any AI Tool.

For today, let’s start with the basics.

Because before we talk about how to use Claude to better your SEO, we need to make sure we’re all speaking the same language. Because Claude has a whole new vocabulary and honestly nobody explains it in plain English.

You know us… we love to take a complex topic and break it down into a simple “tell me like I am five” kinda way. So lets dive in.

CONSIDER THIS YOUR NO-JARGON CLAUDE DICTIONARY

SKILLS

Instead of typing the same instructions every single time, a Skill saves them permanently. It’s like a prompt, but better.

Example: imagine building a content writer Skill that already knows your brand voice, what ranks in Google and AI search, how to structure a blog post for maximum visibility, and exactly where to put your keywords. You teach that skill once, not every time you need a new blog.

PROJECTS

A dedicated workspace for one topic, department of your business or client. Your SEO stuff stays with your SEO stuff. This way Claude always knows which brain to use— competitive research, UX strategy or content writing.

MEMORY

Claude remembers the real you between conversations (your business, the way you talk, your goals) The difference from ChatGPT? So go ahead, Open Claude and poke around.

Go to Settings → Connectors → Browse Connectors… see what’s in there.
Go to Settings → Capabilities → Did you know you can import your memory from other AI tools? Like ChatGPT so you aren’t starting from scratch?
Go to Customize → Check out the skills section.

SEO Squeeze #95: What Impacts Local SEO in 2026?

LET’S TALK ABOUT LOCAL SEO

Because it’s evolving and if you take local clients and customers, this is important. Let’s start with what matters on a Google search page…

What is The Map Pack?

It’s the 3 local business listings that show up at the top of Google when someone searches things like…

“plumber near me”
“wedding planner in Minneapolis”
“family photographer Orange County”

It includes the map + three business listings. (see that screenshot below) This local pack is more competitive than ever. The average click-through rate for position one is 42%. Position two gets 24%. Position three drops to 15%. (still very high!)

Now here’s the update.

A small independent study (not from Google, just data analysis from observed rankings) recently looked at what appears to be influencing Map Pack rankings in 2026.

And here’s what they are suggesting are the most important things to focus on and optimize for in order to show up in this coveted ‘Local Map Pack’:

Consistency score (35%) — Perfect NAP (name, address and phone number) matching across platforms. Think Google Business Profile, Facebook, Apple Maps, Yelp, your own website, etc.
Freshness signals (25%) — Recent post and updates, new reviews, active management
Data distribution (20%) — Your business information being correctly synced across the broader web, not just the sites you manually manage. Think smaller local directories, industry databases like The Knot, Zillow, Psychology Today, etc.
Review velocity (15%) — Consistent review generation
Schema alignment (5%) — Website structured data matching citation data

Remember, this is a small study. Nothing is confirmed by Google.

But it does reinforces something important…

Google cares about consistency and accuracy more than anything.

Here’s your 10-minute action step this week:

Search your business name
Check your top 5 listings
Confirm your name, address, and phone number match exactly (if not fix it)
Look at your Google Business Profile… have you posted or updated anything lately?

If you’ve been here since SEO Squeeze #73 then you should have a Bing Webmasters account. If not, then start there!

And once you are inside… here’s the big news:

Bing Webmasters just rolled out an AI Performance Report

Here’s what the report will show:

1. If your content is being cited in AI answers
Not ranked on Google, but specifically cited inside AI-generated responses across Bing and Copilot.

2. The keywords and phrases triggering those citations
You can see which search prompts are pulling your content into AI responses.

3. How often it’s happening
The report shows trends over time so you can monitor growth or decline.

4. Which pages are being referenced
This helps you identify what types of content AI considers authoritative.

This data is huge!

CHECK IT OUT

You might be wondering… “Now what? What should I do now with this new knowledge?“

Double down on pages already being cited: Update them. Expand them. Add FAQs. Strengthen internal links. If AI already sees them as authoritative, lean in.
Create content around the queries triggering citations: If you see specific phrases showing up, build supporting blog posts or service-page expansions around those exact topics.
Identify visibility gaps: Rather than focus what you are seeing here, maybe consider what you aren’t seeing!

I’ve got a fun new little Google Search Console secret for ya, friend.

Google Search Console can show you what questions and phrases you get cited for in AI Overviews like these…

(peep 👀 on the righthand side where we are featured— Google Search Console showed up this!)

Step 1: Go to your Google Search Console account.

Step 2: On the lefthand side menu, click “Search Results”

Step 3: Click “add filter” and select “query”

Step 4 Select “custom (regex)” from the drop down

Step 5 Copy and paste this into the space and hit “apply”

(\b\w+\b\s){10,}

Step 6 And voila… the phrases, questions people are asking that show up in AI Overviews on Google. In addition to the pages that are getting traffic or impressions on AI Overviews!

Pretty neat huh!? Also… some of these are hilarious. 😆
