DPR invites outdoor-loving community members to join the Parks & Trail Ambassador Program. This volunteer program is open to residents 16 years and older who want to spend time outside, support their community, and foster pride in Durham’s public spaces.

If you’re looking to meet new people and build connections with your neighbors, make a meaningful difference in your community, and help protect Durham’s natural spaces, as a DPR Park & Trail Ambassador you’ll serve as a positive and visible presence throughout parks and along trails.

The program offers meaningful benefits to participants — time outdoors, community-building, and direct involvement in keeping Durham’s parks vibrant, healthy and safe. Ambassadors may also receive recognition through recommendation letters and volunteer appreciation events. This role is perfect for community-minded residents, students and older teens, recreational trail and park users, neighborhood groups — anyone who enjoys being outdoors and supporting their city.

Youth ages 16–17 may participate in the program with parental consent. Ambassadors will receive training, ongoing support, and opportunities to connect with fellow volunteers and staff. Service hours are tracked, and documentation is available for school or community service requirements.

As Park & Trail Ambassadors you will:

• Greet visitors and be a friendly resource in parks and on trails

• Share information about DPR programs and trail safety

• Promote environmental stewardship and responsible use

• Report maintenance or safety concerns

• Support events, clean-ups, and community outreach

Park & Trail Ambassadors will need to do at least two visits to a park or trail per month and commit to a one-year volunteer term.

DPR is committed to building community through parks, and the Parks & Trail Ambassador Program is an impactful way to contribute to that mission. Your service helps ensure that Durham’s parks and trails remain clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.

Kicking Things Off with Zootopia | September 5

Our fall series begins Saturday, September 5, with Disney’s Zootopia. Follow Judy Hopps, the first rabbit to join the Zootopia police force, and quick-witted fox Nick Wilde as an unlikely partnership sends them on an adventure across the city.

Full of humor, heart and plenty of memorable characters, Zootopia is a fun way for the whole family to kick off our fall season.

Things Get Spooky with Beetlejuice | October 3

Just in time for spooky season, we’re bringing Beetlejuice to the big screen on Saturday, October 3.

The 1988 comedy follows a recently deceased couple whose attempts to reclaim their home from its new residents lead them to a mischievous—and unpredictable—ghost named Beetlejuice. Grab your crew and join us for a quirky Halloween-season favorite under the stars. Make it even more special by wearing a Beetlejuice inspired costume!

We’re Going to the Dogs with Best in Show | November 7

We’re wrapping up the series on Saturday, November 7, with Best in Show.

This comedy takes audiences behind the scenes of a prestigious dog show, following an unforgettable group of competitors and their equally memorable owners as they set their sights on the top prize. Dog lovers and comedy fans won’t want to miss our final movie night of the season! And of course, your furry friends are welcomed!

To make these upgrades possible, the park will be closed beginning in mid-September for a period over 180 days (timeline pending). There will be no public vehicle or pedestrian access during this time. Vehicular access will be closed at the park entrance on N Roxboro St. Pedestrian access will be prohibited at the pedestrian bridge over the Eno River.

Please note:

• The Environmental Education Pavilion (5253 N Roxboro St.), located directly north of the park, will remain open during construction. There may be future closures in the area for construction of a new playground.

• There will be no programming at West Point on the Eno Park. DPR programming originally planned for West Point on the Eno Park will continue at other DPR parks and facilities, including the Environmental Education Pavilion, 5253 N. Roxboro St.

• Renovations to the historic mill are not included in this project, however, options are still being explored to repair and reopen the mill after it sustained damage caused by Tropical Storm Chantal.

Pride is a celebration of identity, community, progress and the freedom to be yourself. In Durham, it is also deeply connected to our city’s history.

While June is nationally recognized as Pride Month, Durham has a longstanding tradition of celebrating Pride in the fall, too. This year, Pride: Durham, NC is recognizing Pride in both June and early fall—a reflection of the Bull City’s unique LGBTQ+ history and a reminder that Pride is bigger than a single month or celebration.

As Durham celebrates, Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) Out Door Recreation Unit invites residents to explore that history in the places where parts of it unfolded.

Experience Little River while learning about its connection to Durham’s LGBTQ+ history.

While Little River is a beautiful place to paddle and connect with nature, it is also the site of a profound tragedy that helped spark LGBTQ+ organizing in Durham. DPR Outdoor Recreation and Historic Programs staff will honor both the natural beauty of Little River and its significance to the LGBTQ+ rights movement during this special two-mile Pride Paddle.

DPR will provide the paddling equipment. Participants should bring weather-appropriate clothing and closed-toe shoes. Registration is required.

Hundreds of Residents Came Out to Party!

The summer series kicked off at C.R. Wood Park, where approximately 150–200 people joined us for an afternoon of free family fun. DPR then brought the celebration to Orchard Park, where an estimated 300–350 people came out to enjoy the festivities.

From families spending the afternoon together to neighbors connecting with one another, each event transformed a neighborhood park into a space for community, recreation, and fun.

The growing turnout also reflects exactly what Party in YOUR Park was designed to accomplish: meet residents where they are and connect more people with DPR through the parks in their own neighborhoods.

More Than a Party

At DPR, our mission is to provide opportunities for our community to Play More: Connecting our whole community to wellness, the outdoors, and lifelong learning.

Party in YOUR Park puts that mission into action.

By activating neighborhood parks with free, accessible activities, we’re creating opportunities for residents of all ages to get outside, be active, meet their neighbors, and learn more about the recreational experiences DPR offers throughout Durham.

With more than 1,600 acres of parkland, 66 parks, and 56 playgrounds, there are plenty of places to play throughout the Bull City. Party in YOUR Park helps bring attention to these community spaces while showing residents that recreation and connection may be closer to home than they realize.

Grief is a deeply personal experience, and there is no single or “right” way to navigate it. It can follow the death of a loved one, but it can also accompany major life changes, transitions, and other forms of loss. For some, grief comes in waves. For others, it may show up unexpectedly or evolve over time.

August 30 is National Grief Awareness Day, a time dedicated to recognizing the many ways people experience loss and encouraging greater understanding and support for those who are grieving. It is also a reminder that grief does not follow a timeline—and that finding meaningful ways to acknowledge loss, connect with others, and care for ourselves can be an important part of the journey.

In recognition of National Grief Awareness Day, Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR), in collaboration with the Office of Survivor Care, invites community members to a special outdoor gathering at Spruce Pine Lodge.

A Space for Connection, Reflection and Remembrance

Surrounded by nature, participants will have an opportunity to slow down and gently explore some of the emotions that can accompany grief. The gathering will include grounding activities, a creative crafting experience, and short nature walks, all leading to a simple ritual of remembrance and reflection.

Spending time outdoors can offer a peaceful setting to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the present moment. Combined with creative expression and community, this program is designed to provide participants with space to honor their experiences in whatever way feels comfortable to them.

There is no expectation to share your story or to “move on” from your loss. Participants are welcome to simply be present, reflect privately, participate in the activities that feel meaningful, and experience the support of being alongside others who understand that grief can take many forms.

This program is open to anyone who has lost a loved one or is navigating a significant life change accompanied by grief.

From learning new recipes and money management skills to competing on the basketball court, participants in Durham Parks and Recreation’s Specialized Recreation programs have had a busy summer filled with opportunities to learn, connect and have fun.

Specialized Recreation provides inclusive recreational opportunities designed to support individuals with disabilities while creating spaces where participants of all abilities can develop skills, build confidence and foster meaningful connections.

Here’s a look at a few of the programs participants have enjoyed this summer—and what’s coming up next!

Easy No Bake Class Serves Up New Skills

Over the past four weeks, participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have been learning their way around the kitchen through the Easy No Bake Class.

The program introduced participants to simple and delicious foods they can prepare at home without using a stove or microwave. Throughout the class, participants created a variety of treats and snacks, including Protein Chocolate Chip Balls, Strawberry Parfait Dessert, Ritz Cracker Pizza and Banana Pudding.

But the class was about more than making something tasty. Each recipe provided an opportunity to practice following instructions, develop food preparation skills and become more comfortable completing tasks independently.

In a safe and supportive environment, participants were able to try something new, build confidence and have plenty of fun along the way.

Summer Basketball Ends With an Overtime Thriller

The Specialized Recreation Summer Basketball Program ended its eight-week season on an exciting note when UNC and Duke faced off in the championship game—and needed overtime to determine the winner!

This year’s program brought together 28 participants with and without disabilities to learn basketball fundamentals, strengthen their skills and experience the camaraderie that comes with being part of a team.

Eight dedicated volunteer coaches helped make the season possible. Coaches worked with participants on skills and drills before leading their teams through weekly games.

From the first practice to the final overtime buzzer, the program provided participants with opportunities to develop confidence, practice teamwork and simply enjoy the game alongside their peers.

Money Matters Builds Financial Confidence

Learning to manage money is an important part of becoming more independent. Through the four-week Money Matters life skills class, 13 participants gained practical tools they can use in their everyday lives.

Participants learned how to create and follow a budget, protect their accounts and personal financial information, and make thoughtful decisions when purchasing items.

By focusing on real-world situations and practical skills, Money Matters helped participants increase their confidence while developing greater financial independence.

This class is for participants with disabilities who are new to the pool, and want to learn water adjustment skills, beginner swim ability, and basic water safety. Participants will need to bring a swim buddy with them to remain in the water during the course. The class will be under the direction of a certified Water Safety Instructor. An initial skills assessment will be conducted on the first day of class. Goggles are optional; water shoes may be worn if needed.

Recreation for Every Ability

Whether participants are learning how to prepare a meal, manage their money, shoot a basketball, get active or prepare for employment, Specialized Recreation creates opportunities to develop skills that extend beyond the program itself.

This summer’s programs demonstrate what recreation can make possible: greater independence, growing confidence, new friendships and a stronger sense of belonging.

Billy, Mature Adult Pickleball

Billy is almost 71 years old, and he has been involved in the DPR Mature Adult Pickleball program since 2021. Outside of his athletic endeavors, he loves music and attending concerts often. He also enjoys traveling to fun places, especially to the beach. When asked about how the DPR Athletics program has positively impacted him, Billy mentioned that it has helped him maintain a healthy lifestyle, has kept him busy, and brings fun to his everyday life. Billy enthusiastically stated, “It has been an awesome addition to my life!”

Billy’s experience is a great reminder that staying active can be both fun and fulfilling at any age. Programs like Mature Adult Pickleball provide opportunities to keep moving, connect with others, and make recreation a lifelong part of a healthy lifestyle. When it comes to play, there’s no age limit on getting in the game.

The fall season of Mature Adults Pickleball begins September 2 -December 18, 2026 Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10:00 AM - Noon at Edison Johnson Recreation Center. Registration is not required.

Lynne, Adult Women’s Soccer

Lynne is 47 years old and has lived in Durham for the last 21 years. She has been a part of the DPR Adult Women’s Soccer program since the spring of 2021. Outside of her time spent in the soccer program, Lynne has many other interests. She loves to read, cook, bake, and garden, as well as volunteer at an elementary school, ride and compete with her 11-year-old horse, and drive her 10-year-old son to his various activities. Lynne believes that “as an adult, the importance of finding a supportive community is essential to my mental health.” The DPR adult women’s soccer league has provided that safe and organized place for her. She has met hundreds of women over the years who she has shared support and important life moments with. That consistency has helped her stay on top of her fitness goal. Lynne also loves playing for spectators who bring the energy by cheering and clapping!

Madisyn is 12 years old and first become a member of the Durham Girls Soccer League (DGSL) at 6 years old. When she’s not playing soccer, she loves to make and showcase her artistic creations. Madisyn has been greatly impacted by her time with the DGSL, saying it teaches her to work hard and never give up. Her love for soccer has only grown since she started playing, and because of her experience in the sport, she made the NCFC Classic team and has been playing with them for the last 2 seasons. Madisyn has truly made the most of the DGSL.

From building friendships to developing the confidence to take her skills to the next level, Madisyn’s journey shows how youth athletics can make an impact far beyond the field. As she continues to grow as a player, she’s carrying the lessons she learned through DGSL with her every step of the way.

The Soundtrack to Your Saturday

This weekend’s featured artist is Damion Rashad—and if you’ve experienced one of his events before, you already know this won’t be your average concert.

A true multi-hyphenate creative, Damion has built a reputation as one of the Triangle’s most respected cultural curators. He’s the person behind some of the area’s most talked-about events, with an unmatched ability to bring people together through music and community.

Whether he’s behind the turntables delivering an immaculate DJ set, on the mic showcasing his thoughtful lyricism as a rapper, or hand-selecting the artists who share the stage with him, Damion has an incredible gift for creating unforgettable experiences. For more than 40 years, the United States has celebrated Park and Recreation Month each July to recognize the role parks and recreation play in building strong, resilient communities. This month also honors the more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals, along with hundreds of thousands of part-time, seasonal, and volunteer staff, who care for our local, state, and community parks.

This year’s theme, “The Power Of...”, celebrates the many ways parks and recreation bring people together through the power of play, nature, belonging, and the dedicated people who serve our communities.

As part of this year’s Parks and Recreation Month celebration, Durham Parks and Recreation volunteer Sehar Mahesh, a rising sophomore at Duke University, invited staff to reflect on the theme, “The Power of Nature.” Inspired by the idea that nature restores and inspires us, and parks ensure everyone can access its benefits, Sehar asked team members to share photographs they had taken in Durham’s parks along with the stories behind them. The result is a collection of images and reflections that offer a unique perspective on the places our staff care for every day. Through their lenses and their words, you’ll discover what Durham’s parks mean to the people who help make them welcoming, accessible, and enjoyable for our community.

This photo is of a Mountain Laurel tree in bloom by the dam along the south bank of the Eno River at West Point on the Eno City Park. I took this picture during one of the Outdoor Recreation unit’s field trips at the park while our participants were cane pole fishing along the riverbank. There is so much beauty in the mundane in nature and if you don’t stop to take a moment to inspect your surroundings you will miss it.

This photo is of one of my dogs, Katya, taken along one of the trails at Sandy Creek Park. I absolutely love taking our dogs on the trails throughout our park system and allowing them to explore the natural world with us.

Growing up in New York City, having direct access to experience the beauty of nature beyond playing outside was not prioritized in my childhood. Not to mention, America’s complicated history has racialized Nature and the outdoors. The American Trails website notes that, “Up until very recently in our country the majority of African Americans were not allowed to access National Parks, local parks, pools, campgrounds, beaches, trails, or many other places the same way white Americans have always been able to.” One of the things I love most about working for Durham Parks in Recreation is having access to high-quality outdoor programming that I can introduce to my daughters. In this photo, my youngest, Mila (at 2 years old) was able to be a Bioblitz explorer at West Point on the Eno.

My favorite experiences of all were our camping adventures with the Outdoor Recreation unit. My first camping experience was at 32 years old, and it took a global pandemic to inspire me to explore the woods. I’m beyond proud that my daughters and goddaughters have been introduced to both camping and hiking at an early age. Thanks to Durham Parks & Recreation they are aware that parks and trails are for all.

With music in the air, a young skater dances and rolls through the park with confidence and joy. Moments like these showcase the park as a place for recreation, expression, and connection.

What begins as a seed can grow into something much greater. Through a neighborhood-led gardening initiative, a local resident has been planting lettuce, rosemary, and other herbs in the park. Here, she shares part of the harvest with a neighbor, demonstrating how community gardens can nourish both people and relationships.

The bridge is a highlight for me. Water or no water, a bridge offers a reset. On overcast days, the forest seems enchanted. What a luxury to work so close to nature. My senses refreshed, I can handle anything!

This summer NBA star and Durham native, Trey Murphy III, is coming back home to partner with Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) for the 3^rd Annual Back to School Community Bash!

On Saturday, July 25, from 1-3 p.m. Trey Murphy III, Forward for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans, will be at the I.R. Holmes, Sr. Recreation Center at Campus Hills, located at 2000 S. Alston Avenue, for the free community event. Registered participants will join DPR staff and Murphy himself for an afternoon full of fun games, arts and crafts, free school supplies, free community resources and much more.

The event is free and open to the public; however, supplies are limited so registration is required. The Back to School Community Bash is more than just giving out supplies. DPR and Murphy’s team partner with a number of vendors and various local organizations to provide Durham’s families with access to information on health and dental screenings, eye screenings, and prescription glasses, free books, haircuts, community resources, free food trucks, and a lot of other fun entertainment and experiences!

“Coming back to Durham and giving back to the community that helped shape me means everything,” Murphy said. “I grew up playing at rec centers in the Durham area and learned so much on and off the court. Being able to help the next generation of hoopers and make sure they’re ready for school, that’s what it’s all about.”

Before becoming a Rising Star in the NBA, Murphy grew up in Durham and credits a lot of his early success to his time spent playing basketball and building relationships at DPR’s recreation centers, parks, and leagues across the County. He has a true passion for helping kids and continues to donate time and resources to his hometown that gave him so much.
