Your ministry isn’t the point. Your budget isn’t the point. Your team, your program, your Sunday numbers, none of it is the point.

I say that as someone who loves the local church. And here’s why it matters.

A guest shows up. Something connects, and they want to take a next step. So they ask about getting connected, and they get passed from one ministry to the next. “Oh, you’ll want to talk to them.” Three conversations later, they quietly give up and go home. Not because anyone was unkind. Everyone was kind and helpful; however, ministries were disconnected. The guest fell through the cracks between our ministries.

Every team was doing its job. And the one person the whole church exists to reach slipped right through the middle.

That’s the cost of good ministries that forget they’re on the same team.

Silos don’t feel like sin

Here’s what makes this so tricky: turf-protection almost never feels like turf-protection.

It doesn’t feel like empire-building. It feels like stewardship. You fight for your budget because you believe in what your ministry does. You guard your best volunteers because you’re afraid of being left short. You protect your space on the calendar because your people matter.

None of that comes from a bad heart. It comes from tunnel vision. We get so locked in on the thing we’re responsible for that we slowly stop seeing the whole.

And that’s the danger. Silos don’t announce themselves. It happens one protective decision at a time, until every team is quietly optimizing for itself and no one is optimizing for the mission.

The Apostle Paul saw this coming two thousand years ago:

“For the body does not consist of one member but of many… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you.’” (1 Corinthians 12:14, 21)

A church isn’t a collection of ministries competing for the same resources.
It’s one body. And a body where every part protects itself instead of serving the whole doesn’t grow. It gets sick.

4 marks of a team
that puts purpose over preference

So what does the healthy version look like? Here are four marks I see in truly connected teams. Read them less as a checklist and more as a mirror.

1. They see the whole scoreboard.

A siloed team tends to keep its own stats: my attendance, my volunteers, my growth. Stats are good, but these types of teams use them more as pawns to brag than numbers to celebrate. A connected team looks up at the whole scoreboard and asks bigger questions: “How does this decision impact the whole?” “Is this best for my ministry, or best for the mission?", or even, "Who else needs to have input in this decision?"

Seeing the whole is the difference between winning your position and winning the game. You can have an event, season, or year in the ministry you lead, but at the expense of mission and team. Connected teams measure success by what happens to people overall, not just what happens in their ministry.

Gut check:
When was the last time you celebrated a win that happened in someone else’s ministry as if it were your own?

2. They hand people off, not hoard them.

In a siloed church, every ministry is a destination. In a connected church, every ministry is a bridge.

The goal of ministry should never be to get someone into your thing and keep them there. As ministry leaders, or even church members, our hearts should be to help people take the next step, even when that step leads somewhere other than you. For instance, if a leader invites, trains, and onboard a volunteer for the Connections Team and 6 weeks in really feels led to serve in Kids Ministry…let them. It’s ok. It isn’t the end of the world. In the long run, it is actually healthy to have people serve where they want to be, not where you need them.

Connected teams build clean handoffs: warm introductions, shared information, a real person on the other side who’s expecting them. Nobody falls through the cracks, because the teams closed the cracks on purpose. Healthy teams work together and think of one another, not just about “my ministry”.

Gut check:
Does a next step in your ministry have a clear on-ramp to it and a clear bridge from it? Or is it a dead end?

3. They hold resources with open hands.

Budget, staff, space, equipment- these are tools for the mission, not trophies for bragging. Connected teams hold them loosely. They’ll lend a volunteer, share a room, or flex a budget line when it serves the bigger picture, because they know none of it was ever theirs to begin with. I have met plenty of ministry leaders with big budgets and fancy titles only to see poor stewardship and isolated power moves. It can only last for so long. Be generous.

This is where purpose-over-preference gets real. It’s easy to say we’re one team in a meeting. It’s another thing to give up something you wanted so another ministry can do what the mission needs.

Gut check:
When was the last time you gave up a resource you’d fought for, so another part of the church could win?

4. They trust the direction.

You can have every team member love the church and be in the same boat, but still be headed in different directions. Every team rowing hard in a different direction just spins the boat. A connected church moves because its people respect the leadership God has placed over them and choose to row the same way, even when it’s not the way they would have chosen.

This isn’t blind compliance or even dictatorship. It’s the humility to say, “I trust where we’re headed, and I’ll put my shoulder into it,” instead of quietly running your own plan on the side. I have found that in smaller churches with smaller staffs, it is less complex to follow the leader because it is usually a Senior pastor and no one else. As a church or organization grows, more decisions need to be made, and therefore more leaders are needed.

Unity isn’t everyone agreeing. It’s everyone aligning.

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4)

Gut check:
Are you rowing with the direction of your church, or quietly rowing your own?

What it looks like when it works

Now think again to that first-time guest.

In a connected church, they show up, God stirs, they ask about getting more connected, and it all just works. The welcome/next steps area knows exactly where to send them. The next person is expecting them. The handoff is warm, the step is clear. Within a week, someone from the right ministry has already reached out. They didn’t fall through the cracks, because there weren’t any.

I get to watch this happen every week at Upstate Church, and it’s one of the greatest joys of my ministry. Across all of our campuses, we have staff and team of volunteers who genuinely live this out. They celebrate wins that happen in someone else’s ministry and even more so across campuses. They pass people off with care instead of clinging to them. They share resources generously, cover for each other, and keep the mission bigger than any one lane, campus, or ministry area. Connections, groups, kids, students, worship, production, our teams work like one body, and you can feel it the moment you walk through the door. Are we perfect, no, but we strive everyday to put the mission of connecting people with Jesus to change thier world before our own kingdom.

That kind of connection isn’t an accident, and it isn’t the work of one heroic leader. It is intentional, takes hard work, and at times…hard conversations. This type of team and leadership culture is what happens when a whole team of ordinary people decides, over and over, that the mission matters more than the turf. Because here’s what that guest will never see: the org chart. They’ll never know which ministry owned which piece. They’ll just know one thing: this church saw me, and helped me take my next step.

That’s the win. And it only happens when everyone finally believes their ministry was never the point. The mission is.

We prioritize everything except the one thing that matters most

Look honestly at where your time actually goes.

The kids’ schedules. The work calendar. The weekly errands and the chores that never end. The group texts, the appointments, the endless list. We even pour ourselves into our other relationships, and then wonder why we’re running on empty.

Every one of those things gets a slot. Every one gets protected.

And the most important relationship of your life, the one with God, gets whatever’s left. Which is usually nothing. It’s the appointment we keep meaning to make and never do. The connection we swear we’ll get to “once things slow down.”

They never slow down.

So the single most important connection available to us quietly becomes the one we invest in least. We’d never say it out loud, but our calendars say it for us.

Here’s why it touches everything else

This isn’t just a spiritual issue you can file away and deal with later or a Sunday morning church attendance problem. It leaks into everything.

Because here’s the truth I’ve watched play out over and over:

If your relationship with God isn’t what it’s supposed to be, your relationship with everyone else won’t be either.

I have acknowledged it in my own life. When disconnected with God, that disconnect doesn’t stay contained. It shows up in how short I am with my boys. The tension it causes with my co-workers. In the friendships that stay shallow, the patience that runs thin, the anxiety I can carry. We all know it and feel it.

Jesus put it in a picture that’s hard to shake:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

Cut a branch off the vine and it withers, not because it’s bad, but because it’s disconnected from its source. We keep trying to fix the outer branches while the inner connection sits neglected. It’s like re-arranging leaves on a tree whose roots we’ve stopped watering.

Get the most important connection right, and the others start to heal. Ignore it, and no schedule, no achievement, no relationship, no success will fill the gap for long.
It always ends up at the same place…lonely, brunt out, and checked out.

Let me suggest a few things to start

Here’s the good news: reconnecting was never meant to be complicated, and you don’t have to have it all figured out to begin. Jesus isn’t asking us to become the apostle Paul or Billy Graham overnight.

It’s a relationship. And like any relationship, it grows through a few simple, repeated things. Five of them. Don’t try to master all five. Just start with one this week.

PRAY:
Start the Conversation.

Prayer is just honest conversation with God. Not formal, not fancy, not the right words in the right order. It’s telling Him what’s actually true: your fears, your frustrations, the thing you’d never say out loud.

It’s the lifeline of the whole connection. It’s also where the anxiety you carry finally has somewhere to go instead of circling in your head at 2 a.m.

How to start: Take five minutes. No script. Thank God for one thing, name one fear, ask for one thing. Do it on the commute, on a walk, before bed. Talk to Him like He’s actually there, because He is.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

READ:
Let Him Speak Back.

If prayer is you talking to God, reading the Bible is God talking to you. It’s less a rulebook to feel guilty about and more a voice that shapes how you see everything.

You’ve probably only ever heard it quoted, often by someone using it as a weapon. Read for yourself; it does something else entirely: it steadies you, corrects you, and reminds you that you’re not alone in what you’re facing.

How to start: Don’t begin on page one. Start with the Gospel of John (who Jesus is) or the Psalms (raw, honest prayers for every emotion). A few verses a day. Ask one question of what you read: What does this show me about God, and about me?

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword… discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

WORSHIP:
Get Yourself Off the Throne.

Before you picture a song you’d hate, or some cheesy VBS or student camp song, worship is simply aiming your attention at God and admitting you’re not the center of everything. We do it accidentally at concerts and in nature; this is doing it on purpose, toward the One who made it all.

It reconnects your heart to the source of your life and loosens the anxious grip of trying to run the universe from your own shoulders. It’s less about a style of music and more about a posture of gratitude and surrender.

How to start: Put on a few worship songs during your drive. Or take a walk and, instead of scrolling, name three things you’re grateful for and say them to God. Worship is any moment you make Him bigger and yourself smaller.

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1)

SERVE:
Do Something with Nothing in it For You.

Serving is meeting a real need for someone else, with no audience, no post, no return. It’s love with its sleeves rolled up.

It’s one of the few things that reliably quiets the hum. It pulls you out of your own head, grows your empathy, and models the very heart of who Jesus was. Something happens in genuine service that reconnects us, both to God and to each other.

How to start: Pick one need this week and meet it quietly. Help a neighbor. Show up for a friend. Volunteer somewhere: a church, a shelter, a nonprofit. The test: choose something where no one’s keeping score.

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

GIVE:
Open Your Hands.

Generosity with your money, your time, and your attention. It’s the practice of holding what you have loosely instead of clenching it tight.

Giving loosens the grip of the very thing most of us secretly trust instead of God: control, comfort, our own accumulation. It’s also the clearest sign that your connection is real and not just talk. Open hands can’t stay clenched.

How to start: Give first, not from the leftovers. Pick an amount and give it, to your church or to someone in need, before you talk yourself out of it. And give more than money: give someone your undivided time and attention this week.

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Pray. Read. Worship. Serve. Give. None of it is complicated. Like with anything beneficial, it takes discipline. But look at your week, and the truth comes out: almost none of us are doing it.

We’re missing it. And it might be the exact thing we’ve been missing all along.

The Next Step

You will always make time for what you’ve decided matters most. Your calendar is the most honest confession you’ve got.

So here’s the challenge, and you don’t have to have anything figured out to take it:

Stop putting it off. Start with one thing this week.

There’s a moment every year that most churches never see coming.

It’s not Christmas. It’s not Easter. It’s the six weeks between the last pool day of summer and the first cool morning — when summer ends, school starts, and something quietly shifts in people’s hearts.

The vacations are over, and the routines are back. The kids have new backpacks and new teachers, and family norms are back on schedule. And all across your community and mine, people start coming back to church. From members, regular attenders, and new guests will flock to your church on Sunday mornings looking for a community and a place to connect and belong.

For a few short weeks, the door to your church is wider open than it will be at almost any other point on the calendar. Families are looking for community. Parents are craving stability. People who drifted over the summer are feeling that gentle nudge: maybe it’s time to get back to church.

That’s not a problem to manage. That’s an invitation to steward. I call it the September Swing, the annual moment when the door swings open and a wave of ready hearts walks in. And the churches that make the most of it don’t do it with a bigger budget or a flashier fall series. They do it by being ready while the window is open.

Here are the four moves that make the most of the opportunity.

Move #1:
Treat the Back-to-Church Window Like a Season, Not a Sunday

Most churches pour all their energy into one big “kickoff Sunday.” New series, fog machine, donuts in the lobby. We give this Sunday a title like, “Welcome Back Sunday”, “Kick-off Sunday”, or “Promotion Sunday” And there’s nothing wrong with that — but a single Sunday is not a strategy.

The families walking in this fall aren’t making a one-week decision. They’re deciding whether your church is going to be part of their rhythm for the next nine months and more. That decision doesn’t happen in one service. It happens over the four to six weeks it takes someone to think, okay, this is our place now.

What I recommend: Plan a runway, not a launch. Map out the six weeks from late August through the end of September as one connected season. Every weekend should have a clear, low-pressure next step — not just a great message, but a specific, nameable way to take one small step closer. When someone visits on week one, they should be able to find their footing by week three. The churches that hold their fall momentum are the ones who treat these weeks as a season of connection, not a single event to survive. Include a push for small groups, membership event, or easy on-ramp to serve.

Move #2:
Fix the First 48 Hours Before the Rush Hits

Here’s the hard truth: whatever your follow-up process is right now, the fall is going to expose it.

When you get a handful of guests, a slow or clunky follow-up system doesn’t hurt much. But when the September wave hits, and thirty new families show up in a single weekend, every crack in the process becomes a canyon. The cards pile up. The emails go out late. The good intentions get buried under Monday’s to-do list. And those guests, the ones who came in with real openness and wanting to get plugged into something, hear nothing. And silence to a first-time guest always feels like an answer you give.

The most important window to reach a new guest is the first 24 to 48 hours. After that, the moment is gone.

What I recommend: Get your follow-up system ready now before the rush, not during it. Use the next week or so to develop a clear plan and process. A real text from a real person, the same day they visit. A handwritten note by midweek. A simple, no-pressure invitation to one small next step by day seven. Build it, assign it to real people, and test it in August so it runs smoothly when it matters most in September. Don’t wait until you’re drowning in connection cards to figure out who sends the first message.

Move #3: Make the Next Step Small Enough to Say Yes To

Fall is the season of the big ask. Sign up for the small group launch. Join the membership class. Commit to the serving team. Register for the semester.

I get it — it’s the natural time to launch things. But here’s what happens: a family visits for the first time in September, feels a spark, and the very next thing they hear is an invitation to a nine-month commitment. And the jump is just too big. I like to tell pastors and church leaders that a huge jump feels like throwing an infant into the deep end of a pool. So they don’t take it because they know they would drown. And when they don’t take the big step, most churches have nothing smaller to offer, so they don’t take a step at all. That’s the slip.

What I recommend: Build a staircase, not a cliff. Alongside every big fall launch, offer a small one. Instead of “join a group for this year,” try “check out a small group this Saturday.” Instead of “sign up to serve,” try “come shadow a volunteer and see what ya think… no commitment.” Give people a step so small that saying yes feels easy. The big commitment comes later, after they’ve felt what it’s like to belong. In a season built around big asks, the small yes is what keeps people from disappearing.

Move #4: Notice Who Came Back and Reach Them Before They Fade

Not everyone in the fall wave is new. A lot of them are people who already call your church “home” — folks who got busy over the summer, traveled, fell out of rhythm, and are quietly testing the waters again. They’re back in different seat, hoping someone notices.

And to be honest, most churches don’t. I know I am guilty of this. All the fall energy goes to the brand-new guest and the committed core, and the person in the middle, who has been quietly around even before Summer, gets overlooked. So after a Sunday or two of feeling invisible, they fade again. And this time, they may not come back.

What I recommend: Build a “welcome back” reflex, not just a “welcome” one. Train your greeters, your group leaders, and your volunteers to watch for the familiar-but-not-recent faces this fall. A warm “Hey, it’s good to see you back” does more than any polished program. And for the ones who don’t come back, a simple, guilt-free text goes a long way: “Hey, was thinking about you! Hope you and the family are doing well.” Not “we missed you at church.” Just: you were seen. That one message is often the difference between someone drifting away and someone deciding to stay.

For multisite churches, this is where things get tricky in the fall. The bigger the wave, the easier it is for people to disappear into the crowd, and the easier it is for one campus to nail the back-to-church season while another lets it slip. Your follow-up, your next steps, and your “welcome back” culture need to be consistent across every location. Connection shouldn’t depend on which door someone happens to walk through.

One of my favorite things about ministry is talking to other pastors. Whether that is celebrating wins, talking about life change, or just praying for one another.

I have been honored to partner with churches of all sizes, from smaller congregations of 150 to multisite churches running 5+ locations. And no matter the size, the budget, or the worship style, I keep running into the same five gaps when it comes to helping people connect, especially first-time guests.

These aren’t theory. These are patterns I’ve seen over and over again in real churches with real leaders who are doing great work — but missing something they can’t quite name.

If your church is growing at the front door but quietly losing people out the back, chances are at least two or three of these are at play.

Gap #1: The Follow-Up Gap

A guest visits on Sunday. What happens Monday?

In most churches and pastors I talk to, the answer is some version of nothing — or nothing fast enough. Maybe a form email goes out on Wednesday. Maybe a card shows up in the mail next week. Maybe a well-meaning volunteer adds them to a list that nobody checks.

Here’s what I tell every pastor or leadership team: the most important window to connect with a first-time visitor is 24–48 hours. After that, the moment is gone. Silence doesn’t feel neutral to a visitor. Silence feels like an answer.

What I recommend: A 7-day follow-up sequence that starts the same day they visit.

• Day 1: a personal text from a real person — not an automated message.

• Day 3: a handwritten note saying thanks for checking the church out.

• Day 7: an invitation to a low-pressure next step. Not “join a small group.” Something smaller — coffee with a staff member, a newcomer lunch, a tour of the building.

• I would create a full 30-day plan

The churches that implement this consistently see second-visit rates increase significantly within the first month.

Gap #2: The Language Gap

Every Sunday, pastors say things from the stage that they don’t realize are pushing people away.

Not offensive things. Not theological errors. Just insider language — words and phrases that make perfect sense to the people who’ve been there for years and absolutely nothing to the person sitting in row 12 for the first time.

“Join us for community group this Wednesday.” (They don’t know what a community group is, where it meets, or whether they’re welcome.)

“If you want to get plugged in, talk to Pastor Mike after the service.” (They don’t know who Pastor Mike is. And “plugged in” means nothing to someone who doesn’t speak church.)

The language you use from the stage is either a bridge or a wall. And most churches have no idea they’ve been building walls.

What I recommend: Do a “language audit.” This week, have someone who is relatively new to your church sit through the entire service and mark every moment they hear a word, phrase, or instruction they don’t fully understand. The list will surprise you.

Then fix it. Not by dumbing things down — by translating. Instead of “community group,” say “a small group of 8–10 people who meet in someone’s home on Wednesday nights — it’s casual, and everyone’s welcome.” Instead of “get plugged in,” say “here’s one simple way to meet people this week.”

For multisite churches, this matters even more. Language drift is one of the fastest ways campuses lose consistency. One campus may have a clear communication culture, while a newer campus develops its own shorthand that unintentionally excludes newcomers. Living in the multisite world, while not perfect, a shared language and great communicators help provide clarity in everything you do.

Gap #3: The On-Ramp Gap

Most churches only offer two speeds: park and highway.

You’re either sitting in the audience with no idea what’s next — or you’re being asked to commit to a 5-week membership class, a year-long discipleship group that meets every Saturday morning, or a serving team that requires three training sessions before you can hold a door open.

There’s nothing in between. And that’s where most people quit.

It’s not that they don’t want to connect. The jump is just too big.

The same thing happens further down the path. Someone’s been attending for a while, maybe even joined a small group. And the church says, “Great — your next step is a year-long cohort where you memorize Scripture and meet every Saturday at 7 AM.” That might be a beautiful program for the right person. But as a next step? You just lost them.

What I recommend: Build a staircase, not a cliff. Every next step should feel like a small, natural move — not a life commitment.

• For first-time visitors: Don’t invite them to membership class. Invite them to a one-time lunch. No sign-up, no agenda — just food and conversation.

• For regular attenders: Don’t push a small group. Offer a 2-week trial. “Try it for two weeks. If it’s not your thing, no pressure.”

• For people ready to go deeper: Don’t start with a year-long commitment. Start with a 4-week intro.

Make the next step small enough that saying yes feels easy. The commitment comes later — after they’ve experienced what it feels like to belong.

For multisite churches — this has to be consistent across every campus. I’ve worked with churches where one campus has a beautiful low-friction pathway and another jumps people from the parking lot to a 6-week class. Connection shouldn’t depend on which location someone walks into. It needs to be consistent across the church. One unified path for every campus, everywhere.

Gap #4: The Ownership Gap

Here’s something I’ve learned from years of working with churches: people don’t feel connected until they feel needed. Belonging comes from contribution, not consumption.

But most churches make it surprisingly hard to go from “I attend here” to “I serve here.” Volunteer applications. Background check processes that take weeks. Training requirements before someone can hand out a bulletin. By the time you’ve cleared someone to help, they’ve already lost the spark.

What I recommend: Create what I call “instant yes” opportunities — things someone can do THIS Sunday with zero onboarding. Greeting at the door. Setting up chairs. Helping with check-in. Let people contribute before they commit. The commitment comes after they’ve felt what it’s like to be part of something.

Gap #5: The Invisible Member Gap

Every church has them. People who show up almost every Sunday, give faithfully, maybe even serve on a team, but nobody would notice if they missed three weeks in a row.

They’re not new enough to get a follow-up text. They’re not on staff, so they’re not in the inner circle. They just... exist. Present but invisible.

Most churches focus all their connection energy on two groups: first-time visitors and core leaders. Everyone in the middle gets forgotten. And that middle is where the majority of your church lives.

These are the people who eventually leave — not with a dramatic exit, but with a quiet fade. One missed Sunday becomes two. Two becomes a month. And by the time someone notices, they’re gone.

What I recommend: Build a “missed you” system. Track attendance not to monitor people, but to care for them. When someone who’s been consistent misses two weeks in a row, a real person sends a real text. Not “we missed you at church!” — that feels like guilt. Something like: “Hey, just thinking about you. Hope you’re doing OK.” That’s it. That one message tells someone they were seen.

For multisite churches, this is where campuses often fall apart. The larger the organization gets, the easier it is for individuals to disappear into the crowd. Each campus needs someone, a volunteer, a staff member, a small group leader whose job is to notice when people go missing. Not because you’re tracking attendance like a school. Because you’re paying attention like a family.

Some would say I’m an intense sports dad.

And honestly… they probably wouldn’t be wrong.

I cheer loud. Probably too loud sometimes.
I coach from the sidelines like my advice is definitely what’s missing.
I’ve coached my kids in basketball, soccer, flag football—you name it.

Now they’re into running and our middle son plays men’s volleyball, which means our lives currently revolve around early mornings, late nights, and figuring out how folding chairs can somehow still hurt your back after only 20 minutes.

We try to make every game.
And if you’re a sports parent, you know how wild that can get.

We’ve driven 2.5 hours for a track meet where my kid ran for less than two minutes. We’ve spent the night out of town so we could wake up before sunrise for a cross country meet that was over before breakfast.

And honestly?
I’ve loved a lot of it.

I know parents who spend every single weekend traveling for tournaments. Families spending thousands of dollars on AAU basketball, dance competitions, private coaching, club teams, camps, and showcases.

Sometimes I hear the numbers and think, “That’s crazy!”

I would do almost anything for my kids.

I love seeing them compete.
I love watching them grow in confidence and win games and get PR’s in their races.
I love being their biggest fan.

But sometimes…
Actually, if I’m being honest, many times…

I stop and wonder: Do they love the church?

Not just attend it.
Not just tolerate it because mom and dad make them go.
Not just because I’m a pastor and they are the pastor's kids, but…

Do they actually love being around the people of God?
Do they see the Church as essential?

Because whether we realize it or not:

What we prioritize is discipling our kids.

I’m writing for parents and leaders trying to follow Jesus faithfully in a culture pulling our families in a thousand directions.

I don’t think most parents intentionally push church to the sidelines.

I don’t think anyone wakes up and says:

“You know what? I’d really love for my kids to grow up passionate about sports and success but disconnected from the Church.”

That’s not how it happens.

It happens slowly.

One missed Sunday here.
One busy season there.
One tournament weekend after another.

And eventually church shifts from being central… to being convenient.

We still believe in God.
We still love Jesus.
We still “value faith.”

But if our kids were honest about what our family truly revolves around, what would they say?

Sports?
Achievement?
Schedules?
Comfort?
Travel?
Screens?

Would church even make the top five?

That question has bothered me lately.

Because kids pay attention to what gets protected on the calendar.

They notice what we get excited about.
They notice what we sacrifice for.
They notice what we rearrange our lives around.

And eventually they learn what matters most—not from what we say, but from what we consistently prioritize.

That’s the part that sits heavy with me as a parent.

Because I don’t just want my kids to love sports.

I want them to love The Church.

Not the building.
Not hype.
Not shallow Christian culture.
Not church events because their friends are there.
The Church.

I want them to love being with the people of God. I want them to understand that faith isn’t just something you consume for an hour on Sunday—it’s something you build your life around over time.

But that kind of love doesn’t happen accidentally.

I don’t think our kids need parents who make church legalistic.

I think they need parents who make Jesus believable.

We make almost everything the world tells us is important a priority…

…but the things Jesus says matter most for our family often take a back seat.

Convicting, right?

We’ll sacrifice financially for sports.
We’ll sacrifice time for tournaments.
We’ll rearrange entire weekends for activities.

But when it comes to church?

Suddenly we’re “too busy.”

We can travel three out of four weekends every month for sports, but serving once a month in church feels overwhelming.

We’ll spend hundreds—or thousands—on hotels, tournament fees, equipment, travel, and eating out every weekend…

…but then say we can’t afford to tithe.

Our kids can sit through a four-hour track meet in the heat…

…but two church services is “too much” for them.

Because if we’re honest, the issue usually isn’t capacity.
It’s priority.

And kids are incredibly good at figuring out what actually matters to their parents.

Not based on what we say.
Based on what we consistently sacrifice for.

I’m still figuring this out.

I’m still trying to navigate the tension between wanting my kids involved in the things they love while also making sure those things don’t quietly become ultimate things.

Because one day sports will end.

The trophies will collect dust.
The schedules will calm down.
The tournaments will stop.

But their faith?
That’s what I pray lasts forever.

I don’t think our kids need parents who make church legalistic.
I think they need parents who make Jesus believable.

So maybe the better question isn’t:

“Are sports bad?”

Maybe the better question is:

“What is shaping our family most?”

Because something always is.

This isn’t about guilt.
It’s about awareness.

Because the goal isn’t to pull our kids out of every activity, live at church seven days a week, or pretend sports and extracurriculars don’t matter.

The goal is simply this:

That our kids would grow up knowing Jesus and loving His Church deeply.

And that kind of faith doesn’t happen accidentally.

It’s built slowly through consistency, priorities, conversations, sacrifices, and the small decisions we make over time as families.

So maybe this week, the challenge is simple:

Have one intentional conversation with your family about what matters most.
Pray together before church instead of rushing in distracted.
Serve instead of just attending.
Protect your Sundays for worship.

Small shifts can create powerful change over time.

Because one day, long after the tournaments end and the schedules calm down, I don’t want my kids to only remember what we cheered for.

I want them to remember what we built our lives around.

And my prayer is that somewhere in the middle of all the chaos, busy schedules, sports practices, and everyday parenting…

they learned that Jesus and His Church were never just another option to us.

Not all at once.

There was a time when Sundays carried weight.

Not because you had to be there… but because you believed something might actually happen there.

You walked in expecting:

God might meet me today.
Something in me might need to change.
I need time to worship with my family.

Now?

It’s easier to sleep in.
It’s easier to miss for a tournament.
It’s easier to let a full schedule quietly push church to the margins.

And we tell ourselves, “It’s just a season.”

But if we’re not careful…

A season becomes a pattern, and a pattern becomes a posture.

When Church Became Optional

Here’s the shift most of us didn’t mean to make:

We didn’t walk away from church… we just made it optional.

And that decision—subtle as it feels—is shaping us more than we realize.

Church used to be central.
Now it’s one option among many.

We prioritize:

• Kids travel ball

• Weekend plans

• Rest

• Social rhythms

And somewhere in all of that, church gets what’s left.

Not because we don’t love God.
Not because we’ve abandoned our faith.

But because we’ve slowly learned to build our lives around everything else—and then try to fit church into the gaps.

And over time…

Church stops feeling like family
…and starts feeling like something we occasionally attend.
…and starts feeling like something we attend when it’s convenient.
…and starts feeling less of a priority.

From Contributors to Consumers

But the drift doesn’t just show up in attendance.

It shows up in our attitude and hearts.

Because when something becomes optional, it also becomes evaluated.

We show up asking:

• Did I like the message?

• Did they sing what I prefer?

• Was that engaging enough?

Instead of asking: “God, what do you want to do in me today?”

We ask ourselves, “Did I really like it today?”

The more we become consumers….the easier it becomes to critique.

The Sideline Problem

I’ve seen this in my own life as a parent.

Sitting on the sidelines watching my kids play sports—you know the feeling.

You’re invested.
You care deeply.
You want them to succeed.

You cheer loudly.
You celebrate the wins.

But if you’re honest?

You’re also analyzing everything.

You see the missed plays.
You question the coaching decisions.
You notice what could be better.

And in your head, you start thinking:

“If they would just do this…”
“Why are they playing him there?”
“We’d be better if…”

I’ve been there.

It’s a little uncomfortable to admit—but it’s real.

And here’s what hit me:

That same mindset shows up in church more than we realize.

We sit on the sidelines.

We want the church to do well.
We like parts of it.
We may even love the leadership.

But internally, we’re thinking:

• “I wish they would do that song…”

• “Why don’t they fix that?”

• “If they would just change this…”

And slowly, without even realizing it…

We move from being contributors to becoming critics.

What Complaining Does to Your Heart

Here’s why this matters more than we think.

When we live in that space long enough—where everything is filtered through preference and critique—it begins to reshape our hearts.

Critique turns into complaint.
Complaint turns into disengagement.

And disengagement leads to something deeper: we stop expecting God to move.

Not because God has stopped moving.

But because we’ve slowly closed ourselves off.

Or we’ve put God inside a box of our preferences and said:

“I’ll engage… if it looks like this.”

And when that happens?

Sundays stop changing us.

You Weren’t Meant to Sit on the Sidelines

This is the part I don’t want you to miss.

Church was never meant to be something you watch.
It was meant to be something you’re part of.

Not spectators.
Participants.

Not consumers.
Contributors.

Because you don’t just attend a church.

You are part of the Church.
You need the community.
You need to serve.
You need to engage and connect.

And when you step off the sidelines—even imperfectly—and begin to engage again, something shifts.

Your heart softens.
Your attention sharpens.
Your expectation returns.

And what once felt routine… begins to feel alive again.

So What Do You Do?

It starts with a decision.

Not a big, dramatic moment.

A quiet shift in how you show up.

Before this Sunday:

Slow down.
Prepare your heart.
Pray before you walk in.

And ask one simple question: “God, what do you want to change in me today?”

Then stay open.

Even if it’s not your favorite song.
Even if the message challenges you.
Even if it’s not exactly how you would do it.

Because this was never about your preference.

It’s about your transformation.

A Final Thought

Imagine what would happen…

If we stopped treating church as optional
and started treating it as essential again.

If we stepped off the sidelines
and onto the field.

If we came not to consume…
but to be changed.

Because the truth is simple: God hasn’t stopped moving.

But many of us have stopped engaging.

Wherever you are. Whatever church you’re a part of.
Engage.
Participate.
Contribute to the mission.

Stop sitting on the sidelines and get in the game.

There was a stone in front of the tomb.

And for everyone watching… it meant one thing:

This is over.

We’ve all had moments like that.
When something in our life felt final.

Jesus was dead.
The mission had failed.
The story had ended.

And just to make sure no one got any ideas,
they sealed it tight.

Because dead men stay dead.

But then something happened
that no one expected…

The ground shook.
An angel appeared.
And the stone was rolled away.

Now pause.

Because this is where we often misunderstand Easter.

Jesus didn’t need help getting out.

A man who just defeated death
does not need assistance moving rocks.

The stone wasn’t rolled away so Jesus could leave.

It was rolled away so we could see.

The angel said it plainly: “Come and see the place where He lay.” — Matthew 28:6

Come look.
Come examine.
Come step into the evidence.

God didn’t remove the barrier for Himself.
He removed it for us.

God didn’t remove the stone to make a way for Jesus.
He removed it to make a way for you.

Because God knows something about us:

We struggle to believe
what we cannot see.

We wrestle with:

• Doubt

• Fear

• Questions

• Disappointment

And Easter doesn’t ignore that.

It invites it closer.

“Come and see.”

But here’s where this gets personal.

Because the stone in front of the tomb
isn’t just a historical detail.

It’s a mirror.

We all have stones.

Things that feel:

• Too heavy to move

• Too final to change

• Too sealed to reopen

• To hard to attempt

Take a second and name it.
Don’t scroll past it.

Maybe yours is:

• A past you can’t escape

• A sin you can’t seem to break

• A disappointment that buried your faith

• A fear that keeps you stuck

And deep down, you’ve accepted it:

“This is just how it is.”

But Easter says otherwise.

The same power that rolled that stone away
is still at work today.

Not just in history.
In you.

The resurrection isn’t just about a tomb back then.

It’s about the things in your life right now
that feel dead, buried, and sealed shut.

And God is still saying:

“Come and see.”

See that hope isn’t gone.
See that freedom is possible.
See that what you thought was over…
isn’t over.

And here’s the part we often miss:

The stone wasn’t just moved to prove something.
It was moved to invite you in.

The tomb is empty.

Which means:

• Your sin doesn’t have the final word

• Your past doesn’t define you

• Your future is not buried

And your story isn’t over.

So the real question this Easter isn’t:

“Did the stone move?”

It did.

The question is:

What stone in your life have you already decided will never move…
that God is ready to roll away?

The stone was rolled away.
Not so Jesus could get out—
but so you could step in and believe.

You can go to church for years… and still never be connected.

You can show up, know the songs, like the preaching—
and still stay on the outside of what the Church was meant to be.

Because somewhere along the way, church became something we attend…
not something we belong to.

We fit it in.
We consume it.
We move on.

And deep down, most people know—
this can’t be it.

You can attend church for years and still never actually be connected.

Every pastor I know wants more than attendance.
They want people who are actually connected—
to the mission, to the people, to the purpose of the Church.

But that kind of life doesn’t happen by accident.

It requires a few simple shifts—
the very ones most people tend to avoid.

Honestly, this is why I wrote The Connected Church.
Because too many people are settling for attending…
when they were made for something deeper.

Here are five things every pastor desires for their people—
but most people avoid.

1. Don’t just hear the message—join the mission.

It’s easy to treat church like an event.

You show up, listen, maybe take a note or two, and then move on. But the church was never meant to be something you consume—it was meant to be something you’re sent into.

If all you ever do is hear messages, you’ll stay informed but not transformed.

At some point, it has to shift from:
“That was a good sermon.”
to
“This is my mission.”

Because the goal was never just to hear the Word.
It was to live it out—together.

The church is not something you attend—it’s a mission you join.

Take a step:
Don’t wait for clarity—move toward involvement. Ask your pastor or a leader, “Where is the greatest need right now?”Join a team. Show up early. Stay late. Put yourself in environments where the mission is happening and find your place in it.

2. Don’t just attend—get in real community.

There’s a version of church that requires almost nothing from you.

Show up late. Sit in a row. Leave quickly. Repeat next month.

And for many people, that’s become normal.

But you can attend for years and still not be known, not be challenged, not be changed.

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen in isolation—and it definitely doesn’t happen in one hour a month.

You don’t need more content.
You need real people.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…” — Hebrews 10:24–25

Because life change doesn’t happen when you’re anonymous in a crowd.
It happens when you’re known in a community.

Rows can inform you, but circles are what transform you.

Take a step:
Join a small group. Not “someday”—this season. Make it a priority on your calendar, not an afterthought. Introduce yourself. Stay after. Exchange numbers. Community doesn’t happen by accident—you have to choose it.

3. Don’t just be served—start serving.

Here’s the tension most people don’t like to admit:

We don’t want to serve…
But we still expect to be served.

We want great environments—but assume someone else will build them.
We want strong ministries—but hope someone else will carry the weight.

That’s not how the Church works.

Jesus didn’t model a life of convenience—He modeled a life of service. And if we’re following Him, we shouldn’t be surprised when He calls us to do the same.

Jesus even said and spoke into this pointing to himself as the example, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” — Mark 10:45

You don’t have to do everything.
But you do need to do something.

Because the moment you start serving is often the moment church stops being a place you go…
and becomes something you’re part of.

If you won’t serve, you’ll always stay a consumer.

Take a step:
Stop waiting for the “perfect fit.” Fill out the serve form. Talk to a leader. Try something this month. Even if it’s not forever, it’s a start. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s participation.

4. Don’t just show up—start investing.

For some, church is something you attend but never truly invest in.

Time, energy, resources—it all stays at a distance.

And often, there are real reasons for that. People have seen churches misuse money or leadership, and trust has been broken.

That matters.

But it doesn’t change the invitation of Jesus—to live open-handed, generous lives.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

Because where you invest, your heart follows.

When you begin to invest—not out of pressure, but out of purpose—you start to care differently. You pray differently. You engage differently.

You’re no longer just attending.
You’re building.

Where you invest reveals what you actually value.

Take a step:
Decide what generosity looks like for you—and start. Not someday. Now. Set up consistent giving. Give intentionally, not occasionally. Tie your resources to what God is doing in your church.

5. Don’t just be a seat warmer—be a people bringer.

At some point, following Jesus has to move beyond just you.

The church doesn’t grow because of a pastor on a stage.
It grows because of people who live on mission in their everyday lives.

You are the front line.

In your workplace.
In your neighborhood.
On your kid’s team.
In your conversations.

And yet, many people never invite, never share, never step into that responsibility.

Not because they don’t care—but because it feels uncomfortable.

But what if the people in your life are waiting on you?

What if your invitation is the very thing God wants to use to change someone’s life?

You’re not just someone who attends a church.
You’re someone sent by God.

So don’t just sit in a seat.
Bring someone with you.

You’re not just a seat warmer—you’re a people bringer.

Take a step:
Think of one person. Pray for them this week. Invite them this Sunday. Send the text. Have the conversation. Don’t overcomplicate it—just take the first step.

Final Thought

At the end of the day, every pastor I know wants the same thing:

Not more people in seats—
but more people fully alive in their faith.

People who are connected.
People who are growing.
People who are living on mission.

Because the goal was never attendance.
It’s transformation.

And that kind of life doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens when you stop settling…
and start stepping into what the Church was always meant to be.

The goal isn’t attendance—it’s transformation.

You weren’t meant to just show up.
You were meant to belong, to build, and to be part of something bigger.

The Leadership Trap Most Pastors Don’t See

Most pastors never set out to build a ministry that depends on them…at least I certainly hope not.

In fact, the dependency usually begins with good intentions.

When a church is small or just getting started, the pastor naturally carries more responsibility. You preach every week. You make key decisions. You solve problems, answer questions, and step into conflicts when needed.

In those early stages, this isn’t just normal—it’s often necessary. Pastors carry all things: sermon prep, staff meetings, hospital visits, creating sermon graphics and slides, hiring staff, counseling, budget meetings….should I continue?

However, what works in the early days of ministry can quietly become the thing that limits it later.

Over time something subtle begins to happen:

• Decisions bottleneck with the pastor

• Leaders hesitate to act without approval

• Ministry slows down unless the pastor initiates it

Without realizing it, the church begins to operate on a single-leader system.

At first it may even feel like effectiveness. The pastor is involved in everything. Problems get solved quickly. People know exactly who to go to when something needs attention.

But eventually the cracks begin to show.

The pastor becomes exhausted.
Leaders struggle to grow.
And the ministry can only expand as much as one person’s time, energy, and capacity allow.

What started as faithful leadership slowly turns into leadership dependency.

And that’s the moment when every pastor faces the question that determines the future of their ministry:

Will this church depend on me…
or will it multiply beyond me?

Shifting a ministry from dependency to multiplication doesn’t happen accidentally.

It requires intentional leadership decisions that many pastors were never taught to make.

Here are a few principles that help leaders make that shift.

1. Build Leaders, Not Just Ministries

Many pastors are trained to build ministries—programs, events, services, and systems that serve people well.

But multiplication begins when pastors shift their focus from building ministries to building leaders.

Programs gather people.
Leaders multiply impact.

Healthy churches grow when pastors stop trying to carry the ministry alone and start developing leaders who can carry it with them.

One of the most important questions a pastor can ask regularly is:

“Who am I developing to lead what I’m currently leading?”

2. Move Decisions to the Lowest Responsible Level

In dependency-based churches, most decisions flow upward to the pastor.

In multiplying churches, decisions are pushed downward to empowered leaders.

This doesn’t mean leadership becomes chaotic. It means pastors intentionally develop leaders who can carry responsibility and make wise decisions without constant approval.

When leaders are trusted with real responsibility, something powerful happens:

Ownership grows.
Creativity increases.
Ministry expands beyond what one person could manage.

3. Measure Leadership Health, Not Just Ministry Activity

Many churches measure success by activity:

• attendance

• events

• participation

• programs

But multiplying churches pay attention to something deeper: leadership health.

They ask questions like:

• Are new leaders being developed?

• Are current leaders growing in responsibility?

• Can ministries thrive without constant pastoral involvement?

Healthy leadership pipelines create sustainable ministry momentum.

4. Replace Control with Coaching

Pastors often carry more than they should because they feel responsible for the outcome of every ministry area.

But multiplication happens when leaders shift from controlling ministry to coaching leaders. It truly is a process of decentralization from the pastor to others.

Instead of asking: “How can I do this better?”

The question becomes: “How can I help someone else lead this well?”

Coaching leaders may feel slower at first.

But over time, it creates a ministry that grows beyond the limits of one leader’s capacity.

5. Design the Church to Multiply, Not Just Maintain

Many churches unintentionally design systems that revolve around the pastor.

Multiplying churches intentionally design systems that raise up and release leaders.

That means:

• clear leadership pathways

• intentional mentoring

• responsibility given early

• opportunities for leaders to grow

The goal is not simply to run a healthy church today.

The goal is to build a church that keeps multiplying leadership for years to come.

The Leadership Question That Still Remains

Every pastor starts ministry carrying more than they should.

In the early days, it’s unavoidable. The church is small. Leaders are few. The mission moves forward largely because of your faithfulness and effort.

But healthy churches eventually grow beyond that stage.

The pastors who lead multiplying churches make a crucial shift.

They stop trying to carry the ministry alone and begin investing their energy in raising leaders who can carry it with them.

Because the future of your church will never be determined by how much you can personally accomplish.

It will be determined by how many leaders you help develop.

And that brings us back to the leadership question every pastor must eventually answer:

Will you build a ministry that depends on you—
or one that multiplies beyond you?

Churches love programs.

We love launching them. Branding them. Hyping them. We build countdowns, print banners, create promo videos.

And listen — I’m not anti-program.

Big days matter. Christmas. Easter. Camps. Conferences. They create easy on-ramps for people who might never show up on a random Sunday.

Programs can get people in the door.
But they don’t keep them there.

And they definitely don’t disciple them.

Crowds Aren’t Community

There’s a quiet assumption many churches operate with:

If we create high-quality experiences, people will stick.

But research tells a different story.

• Barna reports that nearly 70% of young adults disengage from church for at least a year between ages 18–22 because of a lack of deep relationships within the church.

• Lifeway Research consistently shows that regular participation in small groups is one of the strongest predictors of long-term engagement, not event attendance.

• Studies on church retention show people who form close friendships inside a church are significantly more likely to remain active.

Attendance is not attachment.
Crowds are not community.
Programs are not discipleship.

We can fill a room with lights, great music, giveaways, and Chick-fil-A gift cards — and still not produce lasting spiritual growth.

And if we’re honest, many of us measure the wrong scoreboard.

“How many came?”
“How full was the room?”
“How did registration look?”

Those are great metrics, but what if instead we asked:

“Who is known?”
“Who is growing?”
“Who is investing in someone else?”

The Programs Were Awesome

When I was in high school, our church did it all.

Beach camp in the summer.
Ski retreats in the winter.
Concerts.
And 5th Quarters — remember those?
Hanging out at church after the Friday night high school football game. Slinging pizza. Playing games. Acting like we owned the place.

They were awesome.
I remember them.

But they didn’t shape me the most.

People did.

I was a skater punk who didn’t grow up going to church. Wearing my oversized Nirvana shirt and JNCO pants (Google them), I didn’t need another event. I needed someone to see me.

My small group leader, Barry Little, showed me what a Christian father looked like. Practically. Consistently. He modeled leadership in his home and in the church. And let’s be honest — the fact that he was a SWAT team sergeant sharing wild stories didn’t hurt. What teenage boy doesn’t love that?

Then there were Mr. and Mrs. Powers.

Almost every Sunday they invited me to lunch. Mrs. Powers made all the sides. Mr. Powers picked up Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Can I get an Amen?

There was no branding.
No registration link.
No invited cards.
No production value.

But it changed my life.
People disciple people. Jesus modeled it and so should we.

The Event-to-Event Trap

As pastors, we can drift into event-to-event leadership.

From one launch to the next.
One series to the next.
One big day to the next.

Our budgets often reflect it. Thousands of dollars toward massive, high-energy moments.

And again — programs aren’t bad.
But they are a terrible replacement for intentional discipleship.

Jesus had crowds.

But He invested deeply in 12.
And even more intentionally in 3.
And He still made time for one-on-one conversations — Nicodemus. The woman at the well. Zacchaeus.

Jesus loved people first.

Programs were never the point.
People were.

3 Shifts That Change Everything

If people are greater than programs, here are three practical shifts churches can make:

1. Celebrate Connection More Than Attendance

Attendance tells you who showed up.
Connection tells you who is growing.

Start highlighting:

• Small group involvement.

• New volunteers stepping into serving.

• Stories of life change.

• Leaders discipling others.

Crowds are exciting.

Transformation is eternal.

2. Build Smaller Circles, Not Just Bigger Rows

Rows are easy to fill. Circles take intention.

Make small groups, mentoring relationships, and serving teams the primary strategy — not side ministries.

People stay where they are known.

If someone has 4–6 meaningful relationships inside your church, their likelihood of staying skyrockets.

Programs gather.
Community anchors.

3. Train Shepherds, Not Just Hosts

Events need hosts.
Discipleship needs shepherds.

Equip leaders to:

• Notice people.

• Follow up personally.

• Share meals.

• Invite others into their real lives and invest into their lives.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing a leader can do is pick up KFC and open their home.

It’s not flashy.

But it’s powerful.

What Only the Church Can Offer

The world can do production better.
The world can do entertainment better.
The world can do hype better.

But the world cannot offer Spirit-filled, gospel-centered, life-on-life community.

That’s our lane…or at least it should be.

Programs serve a purpose.

But when I look back at what changed me, it wasn’t the size of the crowd.
It wasn’t the lights.
It wasn’t the hype.

It was a man who showed me how to lead.
It was a couple who fed me lunch.
It was someone who chose to know my name.

You can grow a church with programs.
You can only disciple people with people.

We are more connected than ever……yet, more alone than ever.

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, loneliness now carries health risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Nearly half of American adults report experiencing measurable levels of loneliness.

Among young adults, it’s even worse.

Recent studies show that nearly 60% of young adults report feeling “serious loneliness.” Anxiety and depression rates continue to climb, particularly among Gen Z and Millennials.

We scroll on our phones all day.
Text constantly.
Follow hundreds on a multitude of different apps.
Liking, sharing, messaging, and comparing.

The result of online interaction with everyone?
Having little to no face-to-face interaction with anyone.

Loneliness is no longer the occasional exception.

It’s the norm.

Even inside the church, studies from Barna indicate that many practicing Christians still report feeling disconnected and relationally isolated.

People sit in crowded rooms and still feel invisible.

They attend gatherings and still feel unknown.

They are surrounded — but feel isolated.

And beneath the noise of our digital lives is a quiet ache, I would say even a cry for help asking:

“Does anyone really know me?”, ”Where do I belong?”

Kids and students experience it….ask school teachers.
Young adults feel it….ask college professors or employers.
Parents feel it….ask other parents, or family counselors.
Pastors feel it….ask me or any other pastor or church leader about it.

Deep down, everyone is looking for community.

Not surface interaction.
Not polite conversation.
Not curated vulnerability.

Real belonging.

A place where they can:

• Be known without being exposed

• Be challenged without being shamed

• Be loved without pretending

The church — biblically — should be the greatest place on earth to find that.

And yet, for many, it isn’t.

The Reputation We Must Face
(Whether we like it or not)

David Kinnaman’s book UnChristian, he identified how many younger generations perceive the church into 4 main categories:

• Judgmental

• Hypocritical

• Too political

• Out of touch

Whether those labels are fully fair is not the first question.

The first question is this: Why do so many believe them?

If the church reflects Christ — and Christ drew sinners, skeptics, and the broken — why does the modern church often feel guarded and resistent instead of gracious?

If the world is desperate for belonging and avoids the church to find it, something is misaligned.

The church was never meant to be a place people attend.
It was meant to be a place where people belong.

If you care about building churches where people don’t just attend—but truly belong—I write weekly for pastors and believers navigating clarity, culture, and connection.

Join Others Who Care About Belonging

4 Things Churches Must Do to Build Real Community

If we want to equip believers and reach unbelievers, community cannot be assumed.

It must be intentional.

1. Make Belonging Visible — Not Vague

It is not enough to throw out to a crowd , “Get connected.”

People need to see how. They need proof and direction.

Church leaders must:

• Clearly define the pathway from visitor → community → service

• Communicate next steps repeatedly and simply

• Make small groups, teams, or classes obvious and accessible

• Remove unnecessary barriers to entry

But this isn’t just on leaders.

If you’re an everyday follower of Christ:

• Invite someone into your circle.

• Don’t wait to be asked to serve.

• Introduce yourself to someone sitting alone.

• Move toward people who look new.

Community that isn’t clearly defined will quietly dissolve.

Belonging grows when responsibility is shared.

2. Create Spaces for Honesty — Not Performance

One reason the church feels hypocritical to outsiders is that we often reward image management.

We celebrate strength. We platform the polished and those who seem to “have it all together.”

But the early church was marked by confession and transparency:

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship… and all who believed were together and had all things in common.” — Acts 2:42,44

Devotion. Fellowship. Shared life.

Real community requires vulnerability.

Church leaders must:

• Train group leaders to facilitate honest conversation

• Normalize confession and prayer

• Teach that struggle is not spiritual failure

• Breed authenticity and vulnerability.

And believers must:

• Stop pretending they are good.

• Admit weakness.

• Ask for prayer.

• Be honest about doubt, temptation, and fear.

If people cannot be honest, they will not stay.

3. Equip Shepherds — Not Just Program Hosts

Programs do not create community.

Shepherds do.

A healthy church asks:

• Who is noticing the lonely?

• Who is following up personally?

• Who is moving conversations deeper?

Church leaders must equip:

• Small group leaders to shepherd, not just host

• Volunteer leaders to care, not just coordinate

• Staff to prioritize people over processes

But everyday believers must also own this.

You do not need a title to shepherd someone.

Call the person who missed group.

Check on the friend who seems quiet.

Pray with someone after service.

Community flourishes when ordinary believers take extraordinary ownership.

4. Align Sunday With Real Community

Sunday cannot feel disconnected from belonging. Meaning, Sunday can not single-handedly communicate - the band and the pastor are the most important thing at this church.

If church feels like a weekly event instead of a shared life, people will attend without attaching. They will come in for an hour and leave the 167 hours of the week still needing community.

Church leaders should:

• Consistently point to relational next steps

• Tell stories of life change through community

• Connect sermons to shared discipleship

• Celebrate participation, not just attendance

And believers must resist consumer Christianity.

Ask yourself:

• Am I attending or attaching?

• Am I observing or participating?

• Am I known by anyone here?

If church feels like an event instead of a family, people will consume it — not commit to it.

A Word to the Church

The world is not rejecting community.
It is starving for it.

The church does not need better branding.

It needs deeper belonging.

And belonging is not accidental.

It is cultivated.

It is modeled.

It is protected.

It is pursued.

Everyone is looking for community.

The church should be the greatest place on earth to find it.

And if it isn’t, we have work to do.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself this week:
1. How are you personally in community?
2. How are you providing community for others?
3. Am I attending the body of Christ, or am I belonging to the body of Christ?

The church was never meant to be a place people attend.
It was meant to be a people who belong.

Have you ever been to a Madame Tussauds wax museum?

Maybe a big family trip to a large city like New York.
Or, if you’re more like me, a redneck vacation stop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

It’s fascinating… and at the same time a little creepy.

The wax figures look real.
The eyes. The wrinkles. The posture.
From a distance, you’d swear they could blink…or maybe jump scare you.

But they can’t.

They’re polished.
Detailed.
Impressive.

And completely fake.

I’ve been in ministry for over twenty years, and if I’m honest, I’ve seen something similar in our world that is deeply troubling for the future of the Church.

Plastic pastors.

In a culture surrounded by the performance pressures placed on each of us, the silent expectations have shaped the pulpit. Pastors who started ministry to help people meet Jesus and for lives to be changed drift into self-preservation and image management. I wholeheartedly believe that most start with great intentions. But somewhere along the way, something shifts.

Pastors lose their identity in Christ.
Pastors drift from their calling to shepherd people.
And start caring more about:

• How they performed on stage

• How they look online

• How much influence they have

• Checking attendance metrics as a sign of success

The shepherd slowly becomes the performer.

Looks good.
Communicates well.
Tons of followers on social media.
Polished.

But not fully alive.

The Pressure We Don’t Talk About

Pastors carry expectations most people never see.

Preach powerfully.
Lead confidently.
Grow the church.
Never wobble.

No one says, “Pretend.”

But the expectations placed, even on ourselves, whisper…

If the sermon lands, you feel valuable.
If attendance dips, you feel insecure.
If criticism comes, you replay it for days.
If people leave, it’s personal.

And so we polish.

We trim the vulnerable parts.
We edit the messy stories.
We can become plastic.

But the church doesn’t need a plastic pastor.
It needs a real one.

The Fear of Being Known

Someone once said,

“The greatest desire of any man is to be known, but the greatest fear is to also be known.”

That tension lives in ministry.

We want to be known.
But being known means risk.

Admitting weakness.
Confessing doubt.
Letting trusted people see behind the curtain.

We preach grace every week.

But quietly, we live as if it doesn’t apply to us.

We All Need to Remember We Are Clay, Not Plastic

Paul writes:

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:7 (ESV)

Jars of clay.

Not polished porcelain.
Not hardened plastic.

Clay cracks. And that’s the point.
We all have flaws and weaknesses. As pastors, while not a full-fledged therapy session needs to take place on a Sunday morning from that stage, honesty and transparency do.

As pastors, when we are real about our lives, our struggles as leaders, parents, spouses, it builds a common denominator for everyone in the room…

WE ALL NEED JESUS.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
— 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

The power was never meant to come from us. The power comes to each of us through Christ in the midst of our weakness.

We believe that for our people.

Do we believe it for ourselves?

Stop Caring So Much About You

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Pastors, the more we obsess over our platform, the less we actually pastor people.

How did I do?
Did it land?
Are we growing?
Will that be the quote shared by everyone on Instagram?

Meanwhile, the people God entrusted to us are fighting real battles.

Marriages are fragile.
Finances are fickle.
Teenagers are doubting.
Families are grieving.

And we’re worried about our brand?….Come on!

Peter challenges church leaders by saying:

“Shepherd the flock of God that is among you…”
— 1 Peter 5:2 (ESV)

Among you.

Not the audience.
Not the followers.
The people.

The world doesn’t need more celebrity pastors.
It doesn’t need untouchable leaders or curated personalities.

It needs shepherds who are with the sheep.

The Connected Church Starts with Connected Pastors

You cannot build a connected church if you are a disconnected pastor.

If no one really knows you, your people will learn to hide too.

Plastic leadership creates plastic communities.
But authenticity creates connection.

Psalm 139 reminds us:

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!”
— Psalm 139:1 (ESV)

You are already fully known by God.

The insecurity.
The ambition.
The fear.

And He called you anyway.

Final Word

Wax figures look real from a distance.

They shine under lights.
They photograph well.

But they’re lifeless.

Pastors, we were never called to be wax figures on a stage.

We are jars of clay—cracked, dependent, and alive with the treasure of Christ.

Stop performing.
Start pastoring.

Because the Church doesn’t need another polished replica.

It needs a real shepherd.

The Church should be one of the most diverse places in the world.

Not because it’s trendy.
Not because it looks good in photos.
But because the gospel itself is an invitation that crosses every line humanity has ever drawn.

At its best, the Church reflects the Kingdom of God—a family made up of different stories, cultures, languages, and backgrounds, held together not by sameness but by grace.

And yet, if we’re honest, diversity doesn’t happen automatically. Most churches don’t resist it intentionally—they simply drift toward what feels familiar.

That drift is subtle. It’s shaped by preferences we rarely question and systems we rarely notice. Over time, we stop asking who isn’t in the room and start assuming that what feels normal to us must feel normal to everyone.

The result?
Churches that are often warm and welcoming, but not always places where people truly belong.

What I have experienced is that belonging costs something.

The Church Isn’t Meant to Look Like Me

One of the most uncomfortable realizations I’ve had as a leader is this:
my preferences are not neutral.

My music taste.
My preaching cadence.
My assumptions about leadership, communication, conflict, and “what feels normal.”

For a long time, I thought I was building a church.

What I was really doing—without realizing it—was building a church that felt natural to people like me.

That realization didn’t just come from ministry.
It came from my living room.

Learning This as a Parent Before I Learned It as a Pastor

My wife and I adopted three incredible boys. They are bi-racial. They are deeply loved. They are growing up in a Christian home with white parents—while learning to navigate a non-Christian world that will often try to tell them who they are before they ever get to answer that question themselves.

And if I’m honest, there have been moments where I’ve felt completely unprepared.

Moments where I’ve wondered:

• How do I help my sons understand their identity without erasing their story?

• How do I honor their culture while grounding them in Christ?

• How do I talk about race, belonging, and faith in a world that speaks loudly and often about all three?

Those conversations haven’t always been clean or easy. Sometimes they’ve been emotional. Sometimes clumsy. Sometimes marked by more listening than talking. Sometimes more talking than listening.

But over time, I’ve realized something:
The heart of all of it comes down to identity.

And isn’t that the question every person is asking—whether they’re a child, a teenager, or an adult sitting at church?

Who am I?
And where do I belong?

Identity Is Always the Issue

The world has no shortage of answers to those questions.

Some are loud.
Some are persuasive.
Some are rooted in pain, performance, or power.

But the Church has been entrusted with a better word.

Over and over and over again, we are called to proclaim:
“Your identity is found in Christ.”

Scripture doesn’t whisper this—it declares it.

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”(1 John 3:1, ESV)

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:19, ESV)

This is the message my sons need.
It’s the message I need.
And it’s the message the Church must never grow tired of repeating.

You matter.
You are of value.
And you belong here.

Not once you have it all figured out.
Not once the doubts disappear.
Not once the hurt is healed.
Not once you attend our membership event.

Jesus didn’t say, “Come when you’re cleaned up.”
He said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, ESV)

From Welcome to Belonging

Most churches are genuinely welcoming. And that’s good.

But belonging goes deeper.
Belonging says, “You don’t just attend here—you’re seen here.”

It asks harder questions:

• Who gets to influence the culture?

• Whose voice is trusted?

• Who is given patience when their story is different?

A church can welcome people without ever helping them feel at home.

Belonging happens when people don’t feel pressure to shrink parts of themselves to fit the room—because the room has already made space.

A Few Hard-Won Lessons

Not formulas. Not guarantees. Just practices that seem to matter.

1. You Can’t Love People You Don’t Spend Time With
It’s hard to care deeply about people you don’t really know. Diversity doesn’t grow out of meetings or mission statements—it grows out of shared meals, honest conversations, and life together.

Question: Whose lives are shaping me—and whose lives am I missing entirely?

2. Being Seen Isn’t the Same as Being Trusted
People notice when diversity is visible but never influential. If voices are invited but never heard, or present but never trusted, it eventually wears thin. Belonging means having a real say, not just a seat in the room.

Question: Who actually has influence here, and who are we just proud to point to?

3. Unity Doesn’t Mean We All Have to Be the Same
Following Jesus doesn’t erase our differences—it brings them together.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek… for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28, ESV)

The early church didn’t grow by forcing everyone to fit one mold. They learned how to live faithfully with difference.

Question: Do we confuse unity with comfort—and difference with disruption?

4. Trust Takes Time—and That’s Okay
For people who have been hurt, overlooked, or marginalized, trust doesn’t come quickly. Patience isn’t a weakness in leadership; it’s one of the clearest expressions of love.

Question: Are we willing to move at the speed of trust, even when it slows us down?

5. The Kingdom of God Should Stretch Us
If the church always feels comfortable to me, it probably means it looks too much like me.

The Kingdom of God is bigger, richer, and more beautiful than our personal preferences.

“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages.” (Revelation 7:9, ESV)

Question: What preferences am I protecting that might be limiting who feels like they belong?

Are Our Churches Proclaiming This?

Are we saying—clearly and consistently:

Your identity is in Christ.
You matter.
You are of value.
You belong here.

Not as a slogan.
Not as a marketing line.
But as a lived, embodied reality.

The Church isn’t meant to look like me.
It’s meant to look like the Kingdom.

And that Kingdom—formed by grace, held together by love, and centered on Jesus—is exactly the place where every person can finally answer the question:

This is who I am.
And this is where I belong.

There’s something special that happens in the church lobby every Sunday.

It’s not flashy.
It’s not scheduled.
It’s not on the stage.
It’s not even always noticed.

But it’s real.

It happens in the in-between.
The few minutes before service starts or just as service ends.
It happens in the rush of families checking in kids or picking them up.
It happens over getting a cup of coffee.
It happens in a quick handshake, a warm smile, a simple: “I’m really glad you’re here.”

The lobby might feel like a pass-through space…but it is so much more!

But it’s often the most relational moment of belonging the entire Sunday.

The Lobby is Where People Are Most Honest

Think about the kinds of conversations that happen there:

• “It’s been a tough week.”

• “We haven’t been in a while… it’s good to be back.”

• “I’m exhausted.”

• “It’s my first time”

• “Hey Chris! How are you?”

These aren’t meaningless exchanges. They’re windows into real life.

And what’s amazing is that sometimes more connection happens in those five to ten minutes…

Than anywhere else in the week.

Not because the sermon isn’t important.
Not because worship doesn’t matter.

But because people are desperate to be seen.

The lobby is where church becomes personal.

But It Was Never Meant to Stop There

Here’s the tension and the challenge:

Too often, the lobby becomes the only place we practice connection.

We smile.
We ask how someone is doing.
We catch up a bit.
We’re connect for a moment…

Then we disappear back into our lives.

After church, we go back to our weekly routines.
Back to trying to survive the schedule of work, raising kids, and attempting to find joy in the chaos.

We leave the community in the building.
We leave the conversation in the hallway.

What happens in the church lobby shouldn’t stay in the church lobby.

That moment of care was never meant to be confined to Sunday morning.

It was meant to spill into Monday….and then Tuesday….Wednesday, etc.

Why do we limit and leave something we all desperately need to a few minutes on a Sunday? Why do we prioritize every other task in life but neglect one of the most important?

We need biblical community.
We need a place of belonging to encourage, challenge, pray for, and hold accountable.

The Lobby is Practice for Everyday Faith

The lobby is more than hospitality…

It’s a door to meaningful discipleship.

Because what are we doing when we greet someone?

We’re noticing.
We’re welcoming.
We’re creating belonging.

We’re reminding people: You matter here.

And that is exactly what followers of Jesus are called to do everywhere.

Scripture puts it plainly:

“Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.”
— Romans 15:7

Church isn’t the only place people need encouragement.

Your workplace needs it.
Your neighborhood needs it.
Your family needs it.
The world needs it.

The lobby is just the training ground.

Imagine if It Didn’t End After Service

What if we didn’t let those conversations fade?

What if “Good to see you” turned into “How can I pray for you this week?”

What if we followed up instead of moving on?

What if sitting next to someone on Sunday became checking in on them on Wednesday?

What if the warmth of the church lobby became the way we lived every day?

That’s what the early church was known for.

Not their services. Not their preaching. Not their kids and student environments.

But their love for one another.
Their intentionality.
Their togetherness.
Their deep community.

A Simple Invitation

So here’s the question:

What if you treated the lobby as more than a moment…

And started treating it as a mission?

The person you greet might be carrying more than you know.

The quick conversation might be someone’s first step back toward hope.

That smile might be the reason they come back next week.

And beyond that…

It might be the reminder that the Church isn’t a place. It’s a people.

So don’t leave it in the lobby.
Take it with you.
Live it out.

Let what happens in those sacred five minutes on Sunday…

WRONG!

A guest’s “Will we return?” decision is formed in a handful of small moments—often before the first song, and almost always before the week is over.

If you want to move people from attending to belonging, you have to win these three moments on a Sunday morning.

Moment #1: The Arrival Moment
“Am I safe here, and do I know what to do?”

This is the parking lot, signage, entrances, and the first few steps onto your property.

Guests aren’t looking for perfection. They’re looking for clarity.

What guests need in the first 90 seconds:

• Clear, simple signage (not ten options—one obvious next step)

• A friendly human presence (not a checkpoint, a welcome from a person)

• Someone who can answer: “Where do I go?” without making them feel dumb

A simple win:
Assign your best communicators to your most confusing areas.
Not your strongest volunteers to the easiest jobs—your strongest to the hardest.

Ask your team this question:
If a first-time guest is anxious, overwhelmed, or running late—does our environment lower their stress or raise it?

Moment #2: The Connection Moment
“Did anyone actually see me?”

This is lobby hospitality, kid check-in, seating help, and anything that communicates: You matter.

The goal isn’t to be friendly—it’s to be present.

Presence feels like:

• Eye contact and a warm greeting

• Someone who initiates, not waits

• A next-step invitation that doesn’t feel salesy

The trap: Many churches make guests do all the work:

• Find where to go

• Figure out what’s next

• Decide how to connect

• Initiate relationships

• Ask for help

That’s backwards.

A simple win:
Create one clear path for guests:

• “If you’re new, stop by _____”

• “Text _____ to _____”

• “Fill out _____”
  And then train your team to guide people to that one step without pressure.

Moment #3: The Follow-Up Moment
“Do they care about me after Sunday?”

This is the week after a visit—and it matters more than most leaders realize.

Follow-up isn’t marketing.
Follow-up is pastoral care at scale.

Most guests don’t expect a church to be perfect. But they do expect a church to be intentional.

What great follow-up does:

• It’s fast (same day or next day)

• It’s warm (human tone, not corporate)

• It’s simple (one next step, not five)

• It’s consistent (every guest, every week)

A simple win:
Your follow-up should answer these three questions:

1. “Any questions you might have?” (Give them a chance to respond)

2. “Is there a next step?” (Give them one clear step)

3. “Can we pray for you?” (Show actual care)

Final Thought

Church growth isn’t a mystery.

When guests feel seen, they return.
When they return, they take steps.
When they take steps, they begin to belong.

And belonging is where transformation starts.

They leave because no one noticed when they showed up.

They leave because they were welcomed—but not followed up with.
They leave because they attended—but never felt like they belonged.

And that should bother us.

Attendance Is Not the Win

Somewhere along the way, many churches quietly replaced discipleship with attendance metrics.

If the room was full, we assumed things were healthy.
If the service went well, we assumed people connected.
If someone came back once or twice, we assumed they were “plugging in.”

But attendance is a moment.
Belonging is a journey.

And churches that don’t intentionally guide people on that journey unintentionally lose them.

First Impressions Are Spiritual Work

First impressions are not cosmetic.
They are pastoral.

From the parking lot to the lobby, from the first smile to the follow-up email, people are subconsciously asking:

• Do I matter here?

• Will anyone notice me?

• Is there a place for someone like me?

The way we answer those questions—often without words—determines whether someone ever takes a next step.

That’s not shallow.
That’s shepherding.

Follow-Up Is Discipleship (Whether We Like It or Not)

If someone visits your church and no one reaches out, what message did they receive?

Not intentionally—but clearly.

Follow-up isn’t about data collection or church growth hacks.
It’s about saying, “We saw you. You matter. We’re glad you came.”

When churches fail at follow-up, it’s rarely because they don’t care.
It’s because they don’t have simple, repeatable systems that match their values.

That’s a solvable problem.
