The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

The story opens during a summer festival in Omelas, a vibrant city by the sea. The citizens are intelligent, mature, and seemingly happy. Their society functions without kings, standing armies, secret police, exploitation, or destructive technologies. They have rich culture, good food, music, and strong community. It is presented as a fully realized, prosperous civilization.

The entire foundation of this society rests on a single condition: the suffering of a single soul. In a damp, windowless cellar beneath one of the buildings, a child is locked away in complete neglect. The child sits in its own filth, malnourished and terrified. It remembers sunlight and its mother, and it occasionally begs the people who drop off its meager food to let it out. The terms of Omelas are clear. If this child is brought into the light, cleaned, fed well, or spoken to with kindness, all the joy, health, beauty, and prosperity of the city will be destroyed.

Young people in Omelas are usually taken to see the child between the ages of eight and twelve so they understand what pays for their lives. Their initial reaction is horror, grief, and disgust at their own helplessness. Over time, however, most citizens learn to rationalize the arrangement. They tell themselves that throwing away the happiness of thousands for the uncertain recovery of one broken life is irrational. They convince themselves that the child is now too damaged and habituated to darkness to ever truly benefit from freedom anyway. Eventually, they use the child’s suffering to justify their own gratitude, claiming that the knowledge of this horror is what gives their art, music, and relationships such depth and tenderness.

A small number of people refuse to make peace with the bargain. After seeing the child, or after brooding on it for days or years, an individual will fall silent. They walk out of their homes, pass through the city gates, and walk alone past the farmlands toward the dark mountains. They do not attempt to tear down the city or start a rebellion. They simply withdraw their consent, choosing an unknown existence over a paradise built on suffering.

The singing and dancing underground created an intense community bond tied directly to conflict. We needed the hit of a crisis to feel unified, which deflected from the dysfunction of our everyday lives in between. Instead of questioning the endless loop, that crisis state became my proud identity, validating my story as a resilient thriver.

What I called resilience was actually a cushion of relative safety behind reinforced walls and Iron Domes. It was an insulation that allowed me to ignore Palestinian resilience, enduring generations of occupation and subjugation without a buffer, while still sustaining life, holding weddings, and running circus camps in the actual rubble.

Acknowledging their resilience meant the collapse of the comfortable story I was clinging to. It meant giving up my monopoly on the survivor narrative, my claims to strength, and the moral high ground. It exposed my celebrated normalcy for what it really was: the dissociation required for me to remain blind to their destruction.

After my military service, I considered getting a firearm license. At the time, I was living near Tel Aviv and I was not eligible. I considered changing my mailing address and signing a lease at my parents’ home in the settlement, because living in the West Bank is one of the easiest eligibility criteria for getting a firearm.

This points to a broader dynamic of how small minorities expand their influence. A majority of the population does not need to consent. It only takes a dedicated core, ideological clarity, institutional positioning, and a firm grip on the instruments of force. When a dedicated core captures those broader civic institutions, the center of gravity shifts long before the public notices.

The machine does not require everyone to believe in the occupation or the Greater Israel project to run. But as more people become aware of the underlying engine and decide to speak out, they crash into a brutal reality. An ideological project of this scale cannot tolerate internal ambiguity. Once the core commits to a maximalist vision, neutrality disappears. That is the moment people realize that the people with the arms, power, and a captured base are truly running the show.

The people who assume the system will self-correct or that the state will protect them out of a shared civic baseline miss how fast those baselines dissolve under pressure. They assume the old rules still apply while the actual power structure has already shifted beneath their feet.

It is easy to have a blind spot when there is always someone else on a lower rung. People accept the structure because they sit higher up on the ladder than the Palestinians, convincing themselves that their relative position provides permanent protection. The fatal flaw in that calculation is that once the immediate external dissent is managed or subjugated, the machinery needs new fuel.

First, it goes after the Palestinians and outer critics. Anyone looking in from the outside is dismissed as an enemy or an outsider who does not understand the local reality. The people currently shouting the loudest to silence those critics assume they are safely on the inside, failing to see that they are feeding the very beast that will eventually come for them.

Then the pressure turns inward. Anyone inside the fold who hesitates, asks uncomfortable questions, or draws a line is no longer seen as a dissenting citizen. They are labeled a traitor and punished. The hierarchy always consumes its own in the end because absolute movements demand absolute conformity, and eventually, almost no one is pure enough to pass the test.

It is hard to see or admit this when one is the beneficiary of it, because seeing it means breaking one’s own foundation. When the structure we live in gives us safety or a sense of belonging, looking honestly at its design feels like pulling the floor out from under oneself. It means admitting that the compromises made or the things ignored actually mattered.

Ignorance acts as an internal defense mechanism. It lets people keep going to work, raising their kids, and functioning normally while a slow motion disaster happens right in front of them. Breaking out of that requires a level of discomfort that many actively avoid until reality comes knocking.

During the genocide in Gaza, a news report covered a sea turtle that had washed ashore. A relative of mine laughed and remarked to the room, “What famine in Gaza? They can go eat the turtle.”

The fake smiles and nods. The awkward eye contact. The deliberate looks down at the plate, and the tightening in the chest that comes with holding back words left unspoken. We act on the instinct to protect ourselves from emotional exile, fearing that speaking the plain truth will bring conflict, rejection, or isolation. To keep our place at the table, we become domestic politicians, managing optics and performing ignorance.

That silent acquiescence is how small moments scale across generations. Around the table, we inherit maps of human worth without a word ever being formally taught. Who is in, who is out. Whose death we grieve, whose death we celebrate. Whose suffering is real, whose is justified. Who we are permitted to love, who we are supposed to reject.

When love is understood as a finite resource, tribal loyalty supersedes humanity.

By the time a people writes a law, occupies a land, or builds a camp, the true permission has already been granted.

I also remember the historical echo that “if other countries care about Jews so badly, they should take them all.”

When the subjects are Jewish people, Zionism’s answer is that two thousand years of ancient memory gives them an absolute right to return to a sovereign state on an ancestral homeland. When the subjects are Palestinians, the same movement argues that two thousand years of continuously rooted presence gives them no right to remain on theirs.

Demanding that foreign states absorb Palestinians treats them as generic, interchangeable outsiders based purely on ethnicity, language, or religion. That mirrors the historic European claim that Jews were rootless wanderers who could simply be transferred anywhere else.

The core contradiction is that the movement founded to escape forced exile and statelessness now employs the exact logic of exile against Palestinians, on the exact same land.

When foreign countries refuse to take Palestinians, that refusal is weaponized as proof that the population is unwanted and disposable, which was the exact justification used to erase Jewish people. Using “nobody wants them” as permission to cleanse the land adopts the precise logic that Zionism was allegedly created to dismantle.

This traps the state in perpetual terror by its own design. If the core Zionist truth is that exile only immortalizes the demand to return, then forcing Palestinians into exile guarantees an enemy that will never stop fighting. By forcing Palestinians into the diaspora condition, Israel manufactures the exact force committed to its undoing, ensuring that the very logic used to build the state becomes the premise that leads to its downfall.

Without understanding how these systems capture human minds and train people to override basic moral logic from childhood, we are guaranteed to repeat the exact same cycles. True resistance requires dismantling the machine at its root.

Genocide does not start in the halls of politics. It starts at the family dinner table with small silences, inherited beliefs, fear of abandonment, and the weaponization of existential trauma. We talk about the reality of growing up inside a West Bank settlement, and what happens when the total reality of the occupation finally breaks through the programming.

Walking away from that architecture comes with an immediate and heavy cost. It means facing nervous system collapse, the loss of family, community, and material security. But breaking through that fear is the only way to reach genuine sovereignty and human connection. Palestinian liberation and the internal work of deprogramming are completely intertwined. Both require confronting the root of control so we can finally break the cycle.

Today Christina and I unpacked the mechanics of antisemitism at both the personal and system level. We looked at how real acts of hatred get conflated with criticism of state policy, and how systemic power uses antisemitism as necessary fuel to shield political agendas from accountability. We also examined the historical setup where imperial powers used statehood to bypass actual safety at home, funneling a traumatized population into a concentrated region and positioning them as global scapegoats.

We also explored how internal victimhood programs and hypervigilance keep people locked in loops of fear. When a system relies on generational trauma, it causes people to continuously recreate the very conditions they fear. Breaking out of that cycle requires looking directly at internal wiring, shattering the theological illusion of chosenness, and returning to a shared human level.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can be understood as three distinct operational expressions of a single, indivisible reality. In everyday practice, however, popular Christianity frequently collapses into tritheism. Believers often visualize three separate divine figures sitting in a room together. The moment the Trinity is imagined as three distinct minds with three separate wills, it becomes polytheism in practice. This is the exact same error people make when looking at the Hindu Trimurti through a literal lens. They see three distinct personified figures in artwork and assume three separate gods, missing the underlying reality that Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva operate as functional modes of a single unmanifest absolute reality.

In the Yogic tradition, the Godhead is composed of Brahma, the God of creation, who is born out of the navel of Vishnu, the sustainer God, and lastly Shiva, the God of destruction. At face value, many believe that Brahma is born, opens his eyes, creates a universe, which is sustained by Vishnu, and finally destroyed by Shiva before the cycle begins anew. In this sense, Brahma is not eternal in the same way as Vishnu and Shiva. He has a beginning and an end tied to the universe, while Vishnu and Shiva remain eternal, explaining why some hold one of them as supreme over a temporary creator.

Brahma functions as the architect of a specific local container. When Brahma creates a universe, all the rules, physics, dimensional structures, and shapes of that reality exist strictly within that local context. Our everyday perception is locked to the parameters of the Brahma container we are currently in.

Vishnu exists outside of the local container and holds the full field of all potential universes simultaneously outside of time. Every possible infinite reality exists within Vishnu at once. This is why Brahma is born out of Vishnu. He is the specific localized container that emerges out of the field of infinite possibilities to give shape and form to our experience.

Shiva is the eternally present, unconditioned awareness that is also not localized inside the universe. He is the background space in which creation happens, observing it. This is why Shiva is the destroyer of the universe of Brahma. All stories have a beginning and an end only when imposed on an infinite background that exists before and after the unfolding.

When we shift into Shiva consciousness, we step outside of Brahma’s localized parameters. From that unlocalized vantage point, we can observe the infinite possibilities held within Vishnu. Because we are no longer bound by our current local context, we can experience different rules, geometries, shapes, timelines, and physics that belong to other realities within the field.

In a practical sense, Shiva does not watch a Brahma unfold over time because time is merely an internal coordinate inside that localized container. Each Brahma is a self-contained file containing a universe from start to finish. Shiva does not need to open a folder and wait for the timeline to play out. He looks at the folder and sees the container and all of its contents at the exact same moment. Because Shiva sits outside the temporal rules of any single universe, the start, middle, and end of a Brahma exist as a single complete picture, viewed simultaneously against the background of infinite potential.

When awareness sees every file, every beginning, and every end simultaneously, there is no surprise, no story, and no sequence. Total completeness lacks contrast. If we want to experience a journey, we have to temporarily forget the end of the movie. Contracting down into a localized Brahma container gives awareness a narrow vantage point where time feels linear, choices are consequential, and events unfold step by step. Pure static awareness needs a localized filter to turn static information into a lived narrative. We step into a specific Brahma engine to experience what it feels like to not know what happens next.

This is what creates the dynamic of play. If we are completely locked in a local Brahma container, life feels heavy because every rule and outcome carries total weight. If we stay entirely in Shiva’s unlocalized state, there is zero tension because every file is already finished and sitting on the shelf. Bringing the full trinity into our local awareness changes how life feels. Though we operate inside the local Brahma rules, we stop treating those rules as ultimate reality. We play the character in the current universe, drawing from Vishnu’s field of infinite possibilities while knowing the background space of Shiva remains untouched. It turns what would otherwise be a survival struggle into an experience. That realization gives our local perspective room to breathe, allowing infinite potential to be witnessed and experienced through a finite lens.

That is the core of offering a triadic lens across traditions. It is not three separate entities competing for space, but one singular reality operating through three distinct modes at the same time. A trinity exists because a single infinite reality cannot experience itself without functional differentiation. We cannot have an experience without a witness, a field of options, and a focused point of view. They may be described as different concepts on paper, but in reality, they are a single indivisible event.

Trinity theologies, when understood this way, are even more connected to true oneness because they fundamentally do not believe in separation. They are simply explanations of how one thing can have infinite expressions without splitting itself apart. The monotheistic religions many of us grew up with can end up being just as polytheistic or dualistic as the systems they condemn. We were often taught that there was nothing but God, yet simultaneously told that God was separate from us. The second we set up a boundary where God ends and we begin, we no longer have absolute Oneness. We have a universe containing two fundamental realities.

By trying to protect God’s purity by placing it outside creation, “dualistic” monotheism accidentally creates the ultimate duality. The moment we separate ourselves from God, we are the ones who create two.

Israel may in fact produce capable doctors, useful research, or impressive technology. But medical degrees, startup exits, and tech patents grant zero immunity from state violence, military occupation, mass surveillance, global blackmail, or weapons development.

Being “modern” is not some form of enlightenment. High GDP, top-tier research universities, and laboratories do not make a society “more advanced” if they are developing more bombs. This system excels at incentivizing highly educated people to build the very machinery of total control and harm, completely disconnected from what it does in the real world to themselves and others.

Looking at Israel and thinking that it is an isolated exception among “free Western democracies” misses the entire point. Israel is just revealing what that actually even means. What we call modern is not a replacement for real progress, freedom, humanity, or common sense.

Palestine is a mirror for the entire world that reveals that the struggle is a direct confrontation with a global system that treats human beings and the planet as disposable side effects of capital and state power. Which is one of the many reasons why the liberation of Palestine is the liberation of humanity.

Today we explored the disturbing contradiction unfolding under the Board of Peace framework. If Hamas was an ideological armed resistance group, how could it hand over the keys to a technocratic committee, essentially a modern Judenrat, put in place by the very system it allegedly resisted?

We explored this question and more to understand how the system manufactured all of the conditions it needed to arrive at this moment before us.

We also unpacked how the posture of “never forgive, never forget” creates an endless closed loop. When one side adopts that stance against past oppressors, it generates the exact same stance from others toward them, granting both sides a sense of total moral purity to justify their next outrage. Breaking that cycle requires recognizing how the trap works, extending grace to protect our own humanity, and refusing to become the very thing we condemn.

“The fate of Netzarim (former Gaza settlement) is the fate of Tel Aviv”

To justify establishing a Jewish state in the specific territory of historic Palestine rather than anywhere else in the world, the founders of Zionism needed to assert an exceptional claim to the land, a title held to superiorly override the rights of the existing population.

This insistence on a specific geography shifted the project from a search for physical safety or refugee sanctuary into a territorial claim over an already inhabited land. A practical search for safety could have been pursued elsewhere, but demanding historic Palestine made the displacement of the existing majority population a structural necessity. Without an exceptional claim to that specific geography, the expulsion of the native population becomes stripped of any unique moral justification.

If that exceptional claim is the valid justification for possessing Tel Aviv, it is inherently valid for possessing the historical heartland in the West Bank and Gaza. In fact, the historical narrative is deeply anchored in the hill country of Judea and Samaria. The settlers are actually the only actors operating with complete internal consistency. They accept the foundational premise and apply it across the entire map.

Liberal Zionists attempt to divide the claim. They use that exceptional claim to justify their presence inside sovereign Israel, but they label that exact same claim illegal or immoral when applied past the arbitrarily colored “Green Line”.

The true mechanism is exposed when Liberal Zionists are asked if they agree with the Palestinian right to return to their ancestral homeland inside Israel. The near-universal rejection reveals the contradiction, because the Palestinian right of return threatens their own demographic majority in places like Tel Aviv. Liberal Zionists are perfectly fine with an ethnic engineering project, so long as they are the beneficiaries of it.

The Liberal Zionist position relies entirely on a structural double standard. It requires this exceptional claim to justify itself, but denies the logical conclusion of that claim to maintain the illusion of a modern liberal state. The settler simply exposes the truth that the two ideas cannot coexist, and forces the Liberal Zionist into a dilemma.

If the liberal Zionist says the settler has no right to Judea and Samaria, they invalidate their own ancient exceptional right that seemingly gave Tel Aviv its unique moral justification. If they admit the settler does have a right to the land, they accept that the state is an ethno-religious project across the entire map, which completely destroys the claim to being a universal liberal democracy. The settler simply proves that a universal liberal democracy can’t be built on top of an ideological foundation that requires ethno-supremacism over a specific populated territory. Liberal Zionists eventually have to choose which master to serve, liberalism or ethno-supremacy.

This creates a structural impasse for any “peace” framework built on liberal Zionist premises. By treating the post-1967 occupation as a deviation rather than a direct systemic output, liberal critics attempt to cure the symptom while protecting the cause. Any initiative that leaves this core contradiction unaddressed will continually collapse under its own internal logic. A system cannot dismantle an outcome while remaining fundamentally reliant on the premise that built it.

Either the settler logic applies everywhere, or the underlying premise fails everywhere. “The fate of Netzarim is the fate of Tel Aviv” is true, one way or another.

A recent mainstream news article in Israel presented the current water crisis in Gaza. It laid out the standard of living in plain, neutral facts. Two million displaced people spend hours every day standing in lines for aid trucks with plastic jerrycans and buckets with no guarantee of getting water, as most water infrastructure has been destroyed. Families shower at most once a week. Skin infections, rashes, and other outbreaks are spreading through overcrowded tent camps. The article includes footage of these scenes and reports these facts without challenge or critique. It simply reports it as daily news under a new recurring header on the website: “Phase Two in Gaza”.

These articles sit on mainstream homepages directly alongside political reporting, lifestyle pieces, economic updates, and entertainment news. While people in Israel sit at cafes, go to yoga, and attend weekend raves, the reality of two million people living under these conditions a few kilometers away is published for everyone to see.

Scrolling down to the moderated comment section shows how this coverage is absorbed, with the vast majority celebrating:

• “Just put rat poison in the water.”

• “I’m in shock that they shower at all, those cockroaches.”

• “I have a suggestion for you: shoot yourselves in the head so you don’t have to wait three days for water.”

• “I hope they also get boils and scabies. Even this water is a waste on them.”

• “May cholera and malaria wash over them, inshallah amen!”

• “Who cares about them? Let them not shower at all and die in severe agony.”

• “They are breeding. They need to be eradicated.”

The media’s new rollout of the header “Phase Two in Gaza” is not an accident. It reflects the exact real estate language used by political leadership. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich spoke at a real estate conference, addressing developers and investors. He explained that a professional business plan built by experts exists to divide, market, and profit off the land in Gaza after its destruction. He explicitly described the flattening of Gaza as the completed “demolition phase”, clearing the ground for the real estate development he called a “real estate bonanza”.

The marketing of Gaza as a for-profit real estate project is not some sort of conspiracy. The official “Board of Peace” plan revealed by unelected real estate developers and political advisers presents the redevelopment of Gaza under the explicit real estate term “Master Plan”. In polished PowerPoint presentations, they outline turning the Gaza coastline into luxury beachfront property for wealthy tourists alongside high-tech AI data centers. The local Palestinian population is mapped into biometrically monitored camps, designated to serve as a labor force for the surrounding infrastructure.

In the days of Auschwitz, one could argue that the reality of the camp was hidden behind its walls, and the lack of public information made denial, at the very least, possible.

Today, that excuse is completely gone. The decimation is streamed live, the situation is documented in mainstream reports, and the plans for Gaza are presented publicly for all to see.

Every latte, yoga class, music festival, and regular routine of life while this human catastrophe exists a few kilometers away requires an active choice to ignore what is openly visible. The plausible deniability of “I didn’t know” has collapsed, and choosing to be in denial is a choice to be complicit.

If ancient scripture is treated as an absolute divine property deed for any portion of the land, that same logic inevitably claims its core: Al-Aqsa. It is the logical conclusion of the entire premise of the project.

Al-Aqsa has stood on that ground for over 1,300 years. A physical, continuous presence that has lasted longer without interruption than the combined total of ancient Israelite sovereign eras in the land. Both ancient Jewish temples combined existed for less than 1,000 years. The claim that Al-Aqsa is just a temporary structure sitting on top of a superior Jewish claim is in denial that it has been a living center of community, prayer, and identity for generations.

Al-Aqsa lies at the heart of liberation because it represents a structural trap the system can’t solve.

Destroying the site would expose Israel’s illusion as a modern liberal democracy. It would trade away every remaining cover to complete its conquest. But for every day the site remains standing, the Israeli claim of total historical entitlement fails. A 1,300-year-old physical sanctuary remains standing as visible proof that human connection, faith, and belonging cannot be retroactively erased by policy or force alone.

There is no legitimacy to a temple built by destroying a holy site and displacing the human beings attached to it. A people can’t cleanse their sins in a temple when that temple was built on the sin of cleansing a people.

Al-Aqsa serves as a symbol of continuity, resistance, and liberation. It is a reminder that force can be used to control land, resources, and people, but it can never conquer the human spirit.

If a Jewish displacement from 2,000 years ago justifies returning to build an ethno-majority state, then the Palestinian displacement from 78 years ago from their rooted homeland creates a superior, fresher claim to do the exact same thing. To protect its Jewish majority from this, Israel must explicitly deny Palestinians the precise principle used to build Israel in the first place.

The desire for a Jewish majority state was not formed in a vacuum. It was fueled by a traumatized population for whom being a minority anywhere felt like existential danger. To survive, safety was redefined as total dominance, inflicting displacement and control on Palestinians to build a fortress where Jews would never be vulnerable again. The tragic irony is that the pain was inflicted on the Palestinians to create a false sense of safety in the only place many Jews believed they had left to run.

The Israelis look at the displaced Palestinians outside their walls and live with an eternal fear of retribution. They fear that the Palestinians will do to them as they have done to the Palestinians. The terror of being overrun is not just an abstract concern for Israelis. It is the active fear that the Palestinians will return and turn the state’s own founding precedent back on them. The physical walls, blockades, and legal supremacy exist to prevent this from ever happening.

Denial becomes the functional engine of the apparatus. Admitting the founding displacement feels like an existential threat because acknowledging that truth validates the Palestinian claim to return. To avoid facing that reality, the state relies on ongoing military occupation, land confiscation, and systemic disenfranchisement to keep Palestinians contained.

But domination does not create safety. It manufactures permanent unsafety, escalating continuously to suppress a claim it can never fully extinguish. Genuine safety can only follow from accountability, but by treating accountability as self-destruction, the state makes endless control feel like the only way to survive - guaranteeing that neither people will ever be safe.
