This stretch of the month was less about the green tunnel closing in and more about the river flowing out.

After the rain of the 20th and the heavy wash on the 23rd, the Housatonic ran full, the Campground Trail stayed dark underfoot, and Friday morning the 28th an adult Bald Eagle was working the water at a quarter to nine.

The new names of the week belong to that weather: chanterelles and a milk-cap while the litter was still wet, honey mushrooms at the base of oak, a tree cricket singing from high wood on Thursday, and a run of moths that had not yet appeared in these notes — Pale Beauty, Dingy Cutworm, Signate Quaker, Brown Angle Shades, a Pediasia grass moth, and after dark an American Copper Underwing. Mid-afternoon on Friday a Fierce Orbweaver had drawn its web through the US-7 woods. A tiny metallic wasp, Ooencyrtus kuvanae, turned up the same morning as the chanterelles. Two plants held the last true yellow: evening-primrose on the Kent road at first light, pale sunflower on North Ridge Trail.

A large northern orbweaver, less often noticed than the familiar cross spider. The name is older than the temperament. The web is the architecture; the spider is shy. Late August is when the big orb webs occupy the gaps between saplings, and you walk into them before you see them. I observed this one on my truck.

Up here in the North Country, the Connecticut Lakes Headwaters Working Forest stretches across 146,000 acres of spruce, fir, hardwood, and wetlands that feed the very beginning of the Connecticut River.

For more than twenty years this land has been held under a state conservation easement meant to keep it a working forest—timber production, public recreation, wildlife habitat, and the rural economy that depends on all three. Loggers, truckers, snowmobilers, hunters, and the towns of Pittsburg, Clarksville, and Stewartstown all have skin in the game.

Then the carbon buyers arrived.

In 2022 the tract was swept into the portfolio of Aurora Sustainable Lands, a vehicle built by private equity and climate-finance players whose explicit business model is to reduce harvests so trees can “store” carbon and sell that storage as credits. The same forests that once paid timber taxes and kept local crews working were suddenly more valuable standing still—on paper, at least—to distant corporations looking for a clean ledger.

The investors behind Aurora are not small conservation nonprofits. They are heavy institutional capital: Oak Hill Advisors (a major credit and alternative-investment firm now under T. Rowe Price), AB CarVal, EIG, GenZero (Temasek’s climate platform), and Anew Climate (majority-owned by TPG Rise). These are the same large private-equity and impact-finance groups that move billions across energy, infrastructure, and now “nature-based solutions.” Their job is not to restore the North Woods for its own sake. Their job is to generate returns by turning standing timber into a financial product called a carbon credit.

Who buys those credits? Look at the public deals. Microsoft has signed multi-year, multi-million-ton agreements for Aurora’s improved-forest-management credits. JPMorgan Chase has purchased tens of thousands of tons from the same portfolio. TotalEnergies, an oil major, has put up $100 million. These are not mom-and-pop buyers. These are some of the largest emitters and financial institutions on the planet. Microsoft’s data centers and cloud empire still grow. Chase still finances fossil infrastructure. TotalEnergies still pumps oil. Yet each can point to a ledger entry that says they have “removed” or “offset” a portion of their emissions because trees in New Hampshire, West Virginia, or Louisiana are being managed less intensively than they once were.

The industry calls these “high-integrity” credits. LOL! The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market has issued Core Carbon Principles. Registries like the American Carbon Registry publish updated methodologies with dynamic baselines and harvest-intensity constraints. Third-party verifiers sign off. On paper it looks rigorous.

In practice the regulations remain voluntary, fragmented, and largely self-policed. This is called Greewashing. There is no binding global or even national standard with real enforcement teeth that forces a company to cut its own emissions first and only then use credits for true residual emissions. Additionally—the claim that the carbon would not have been stored without the credit money—is still argued over models and baselines rather than proven on the ground and in the forest, in every case. Permanence depends on buffer pools and future landowners keeping the same management forever. Leakage (logging simply shifting elsewhere) is hard to measure and easy to understate. Social and local economic impacts—lost timber tax revenue, reduced work for logging contractors, pressure on the working-forest culture the easement was written to protect—are treated as secondary concerns.

When the state of New Hampshire pushed back because Aurora’s early harvest levels threatened the working-forest purpose of the easement, the response was negotiation: raise the cut to an average of 30,000 cords a year, improve some roads, keep reporting. The carbon program continues. The credits keep flowing. The large buyers keep their claims. The forest is still privately owned by entities whose primary fiduciary duty is to the investors who expect carbon revenue.

A conservationist walking these woods can see the tension clearly. The easement was bought with public money to keep the land productive and open, not to turn it into a carbon warehouse for Silicon Valley and Wall Street. When the same corporations that expand energy-hungry data centers or finance extraction purchase the right to claim climate virtue from reduced cutting in the Connecticut Lakes, the transaction starts to look less like climate action and more like an indulgence. Pay the fee, keep emitting, call it integrity.

The standards that exist are better than the free-for-all of a decade ago. They are still not strong enough, not mandatory enough, and not honest enough about the difference between a real reduction in atmospheric carbon and a financial instrument that lets the largest emitters keep their business models intact while the forests, the towns, and the working people absorb the real trade-offs. Until the rules require deep cuts first and treat offsets as a narrow, tightly policed last resort—with real liability for failure—the market will keep selling the same story: the climate can be raped a little longer, as long as the paperwork is in order and the trees are counted.

TAKE ACTION NOW

The Connecticut Lakes Headwaters Working Forest was protected with public money to remain a living, working landscape—not a carbon ledger for private equity and corporate emitters. When firms like Oak Hill, Anew, and their partners reduce harvests to sell credits to Microsoft, JPMorgan Chase, and the rest, and when the rules governing those credits stay voluntary and soft, the result is not climate progress. It is permission.

Demand real cuts first. Demand binding standards with teeth. Demand that working forests stay working for the land, the wildlife, and the people who live with them—not for distant balance sheets. Until then, treat every glossy “high-integrity” credit claim with the skepticism it has earned.

Fun fact: This northeastern species (formerly lumped with P. schweinitzii) is a classic natural dye source for wool and fabrics and causes root/butt rot on pines and other conifers.

Fun fact: Turkey-tail is one of the most common and chemically studied polypores in the world; its layered colors truly do resemble a turkey’s tail feathers.

The air was still enough that you could hear wingbeats against the headlamp beam; moth dust left a faint golden powder on the fingertips.

Fun fact: Hickory Tussock caterpillars have barbed setae that can cause contact dermatitis in some people (irritating but not truly venomous).

Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula), Agaricomycetes, boletes, Cutworms and Dart Moths (Noctuinae), Golden Moonglow Lichen (Dimelaena oreina), and Rose Hooktip (Oreta rosea). The lichen glowed a quiet gold on the rock face in the late light.

Fun fact: Rose Hooktip caterpillars use substrate-borne vibrational signals (mandible drumming, scraping, and lateral tremulation) to defend leaf territories.

These notes are only fragments—moth scales soft as ash on a fingertip, the cool give of a bolete in the hand, the brief flash of a sphinx’s wings in daylight, the lingering scent of wet earth after rain.

Yet they point toward something larger: the hidden continuity of the forest, the way life keeps offering itself even as the season begins its slow turn. May we keep walking slowly enough to notice.

Between the first days of July and the middle of August I kept finding moths—some resting on trail-side leaves in the heat of day, others drawn to the edges of light along the Housatonic Meadows campground, a few that seemed to materialize from the leaf litter itself. Most of these encounters happened on the trails and buildings near Housatonic Meadows in Sharon, with a few earlier records farther afield in Fairfield County. This morning a devilish moth crossed my path—a member of the genus Renia, those enigmatic litter moths of the family Erebidae. Its muted wings and quiet demeanor carried an air of woodland sorcery, as if it had slipped from the shadows between fallen leaves and river mist. What hidden spell do you weave along the water’s edge? Its subtle patterning blended with the damp earth and decaying leaves. The river’s gentle hymn flowed steadily beside us. I paused in the dappled light, grateful for this small, mysterious visitor—a reminder that even the humblest creatures of the understory hold their own ancient magic. The psalm felt especially alive with unseen presences today.

Nineteen taxa. Some are familiar faces of the midsummer woods—the spanworms that mimic twigs so perfectly they almost vanish, the saddlebacks whose larvae carry their own bright warning, the sphinxes that hover like small, soft-winged hawks of the night. Others are quieter: the Renia litter moths, the emerald geometrids, the modest pyralids that cling to the underside of leaves along the river corridor.

I keep returning to the Renia of 10 July. There is something in the way certain moths appear—not as spectacle, but as presence—that feels like the woods answering back. They do not demand attention. They simply arrive, do their brief work of being, and move on. In that brief crossing of paths the day becomes a little more fully itself.

If you walk these same trails, or any wooded edge in northwest Connecticut this time of year, look closely at the leaf litter, the shaded undersides of leaves, the pale trunks at dusk. The moths are still out there. Many of these records remain open for identification refinement; community eyes are always welcome.

Housatonic corridor, midsummer 2026

After the rains, the leaf litter and rotting logs along the Housatonic Meadow Campground Trail, Kent Falls, and the Macedonia Brook roadsides have been quietly fruiting. I’ve been walking with the camera and the iNaturalist app, adding what I find to the Litchfield County Woodlands projects. What follows is a field journal of the fungi that showed themselves between early July and this morning (August 11).

There is something quietly profound about these fruiting bodies. Most of the year the real work is underground — the vast mycelial networks exchanging nutrients with roots, breaking down wood, holding soil, mediating the entire forest conversation. The mushrooms we see are only the brief, visible expression of that hidden labor.

In a season when the canopy is heavy and the light is filtered, these small eruptions feel like the woods reminding us that life is still moving, still transforming, still generous.

The trail begins almost without announcement—a path leading from a modest Park-n-Ride commuter lot into a landscape that feels quietly improbable. Inland sand dunes, pitch pines, and the dry, open understory of a place shaped by ancient glacial waters.

Roughly 15,000 years ago this valley held Glacial Lake Hitchcock, a long, narrow body of meltwater dammed by ice and sediment outside present-day Hartford. At its height the lake stretched more than two hundred miles north into Vermont. Winds sweeping across its shores sorted and piled the fine sediments into the dunes that still rise here today. When the ice dam finally failed and the waters drained away, these inland dunes remained—rare, fragile, and still holding the memory of that vanished lake.

I had come looking for the slower voices, the ones that move at the pace of seasons rather than hours. The Earthmonk walked ahead, his steps measured, eyes lowered toward the leaf litter and sandy soil where life keeps its own counsel.

The Eastern Box Turtle

We had not gone far when he stopped and gestured with a slight movement of his hand. There, half-hidden at the edge of the path, rested an Eastern box turtle. The high-domed shell, patterned in yellow and olive-brown, held the light like an old manuscript. When the head finally extended, the gaze was deliberate, almost measuring.

“This one has been recorded before,” the Earthmonk said quietly, noticing the clean notches filed into the rear marginal scutes. “The marks of earlier meetings.” State biologists deliberately leave these permanent notches as part of a standard coding system. Once marked, the turtle can be recognized as a unique individual for the rest of its life. This one had already been captured, examined, recorded, and released at least once before—part of a mark-recapture or monitoring effort that continues the long conversation between people and the wild.

He nodded almost as if bowing to the turtle. “Recognition is part of the listening. Each meeting feels less like discovery and more like the continuation of a long conversation.”

He crouched, careful not to crowd the turtle, and spoke as if addressing both the creature and the wider quiet of the preserve.

“What do you need in order to continue your long residence here?”

The turtle did not hurry its reply. This is a creature of decades. An Eastern box turtle may live thirty to fifty years or more if the ground remains open to it—if it can travel the modest distances of its home range (often only a few acres to a few tens of acres), move between forest and clearing, find soft soil for nesting, and return to the same familiar corners year after year.

It is an opportunistic omnivore: insects, worms, berries, fungi, carrion, tender vegetation. In eating it becomes a quiet agent of the ecosystem—dispersing seeds (especially of plants such as mayapple, which germinate more readily after passage through the turtle), spreading fungal spores, cycling nutrients through the leaf litter and soil. Its presence is both product and guardian of continuous ground. Delayed maturity (often ten years or more) and low reproductive output make every adult precious; populations cannot quickly replace what is lost.

Wildlife Action Plan

“In the 2025 Connecticut Wildlife Action Plan the Eastern Box Turtle stands as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need of Most Important priority,” the Earthmonk said, “one of the species chosen for the Plan’s own imagery. Its long-term trend shows a 30–50 percent decline, with a shorter-term decline of 10–30 percent. The decline is quiet and cumulative: habitat fragmented by development and roads, direct mortality from vehicles (especially nesting females in late spring and early summer), the steady erosion of connected woodland and edges, and the continuing temptation to collect wild individuals. A turtle that moves only short distances still needs those distances to stay intact across years.”

I watched the turtle’s deliberate movements. Around us the pitch pines and sandy openings of the preserve held their own unusual ecology—rare inland dunes, specialized plants, a landscape that feels both fragile and enduring. The box turtle is not a dune specialist, yet the preserve’s mosaic of open sand, pine, and adjacent wooded edges offers the kind of varied ground it can use when the larger landscape allows passage.

“What would allow it to remain here?” I asked.

“The answers are simple and demanding,” the Earthmonk replied. “Keep patches of forest and successional habitat linked so that home ranges and seasonal movements remain possible. Reduce the places where turtles must cross busy roads—through signage, barriers, and, where feasible, underground roadway passage structures. Protect nesting sites and leave the leaf litter and understory undisturbed where possible. Resist the impulse to carry a wild turtle away; the notches already tell us this one belongs here. The same careful tending of woodland edges and interior that benefits other forest dwellers also serves this one. The Plan names the threats and the needed actions: maintain connectivity and corridors, mitigate road mortality, support standardized monitoring and genetic work through regional partnerships such as the Northeast Eastern Box Turtle Working Group, and foster the public stewardship that simply leaves the animal in place. The turtle itself demonstrates the cost of inaction by the slow disappearance of its kind from places where it once moved freely.”

We remained still for a long time. The turtle continued on its way, the shell disappearing again into the leaves and sand. In that quiet I felt the weight of time the animal carries—a life longer than many of our observations, a pace that refuses haste.

“There is a kind of prayer in simply not disturbing it,” the Earthmonk said. “An act of restraint that makes room for a life measured in decades rather than seasons. Stewardship, at its quietest, is hospitality: the decision to leave the door of the woods open for those who move at a different pace.”

Each observation was a way of saying I saw you; you were here. Yet the deeper work is not the record.

Call To Action

It is the protection of the conditions that allow the next encounter, and the one after that, across years we may not see. The notches on this turtle’s shell are proof that such continuity is still possible when the land is kept open.

“The leaf litter still holds places where a slower pace can be kept,” the Earthmonk said as we rose to continue walking. “The question is whether we will continue to leave them open. This place reminds us that even unusual landscapes—inland sand dunes in the Connecticut River valley, pitch pine stands, the quiet edges between them—can shelter voices that need continuity more than spectacle.”

We walked on through the preserve, the soft sand and pine needles underfoot, the sense of an older, slower time still present in the air. Behind us the box turtle continued its unhurried path. Ahead, the trail wound toward more open dune and the light filtering through the pines.

“In a world that praises speed and visibility,” the Earthmonk said, “there is great power in choosing to protect what moves slowly like a glacier and remains half-hidden. The turtle teaches by its very existence that some lives require us to measure success not in what we extract or change, but in what we leave undisturbed long enough for the decades to accumulate.”

I carried that teaching with me as we returned toward the the commuter parking area. The preserve is small by some measures, yet it holds an ancient piece of the state’s natural history—and, if we are careful, it can continue to hold the quieter residents who depend on connected ground and the patience of those who walk it.

Voices of need, the pines and the sand seemed to answer in their own long silence.

In keeping with guidance from state herpetologists, specific location details have been withheld to help protect eastern box turtles from the ongoing threat of poaching.

A limited-run patch for Voices of Need

I’m considering creating a limited-run embroidered Earthmonk patch as a way to support the Voices of Need series and the quiet conservation work behind it.

The design is a classic shield-shaped insignia in the spirit of vintage Maine Guide and Connecticut State Parks patches: dark forest-green merrowed border, warm khaki field, the Chi-Rho rising from a hill with golden rays, the Latin motto Ora et Ambula (“Pray and Walk”) beneath it, and a curved scroll banner reading “Voices of Need.”

It’s meant to be something you can sew onto a jacket, pack, or hat as a small, lasting reminder of the slower voices we’re trying to protect. If enough of you are interested, I’ll produce a small batch and use the proceeds to help fund field work, habitat stewardship, and the ongoing documentation of Species of Greatest Conservation Need here in Connecticut.

The Earthmonk

Early morning light filters through the canopy in the woodlands of northwestern Connecticut. A scarlet tanager sings from the understory. Somewhere nearby, the quiet movement of a box turtle across leaf litter goes mostly unnoticed. These are ordinary moments in the parks and forests where I work, yet they carry weight. Many of the species that share these landscapes have been formally recognized as needing focused attention if they are to remain part of our common inheritance.

This series highlights the species of greatest conservation need, within the state of CT. In the journal entries that will follow, we listen, season by season, to the species featured in the 2025 CT wildlife Action Plan that need our attention the most. I call them “Voices of Need”.

Wildlife Action Plan (WAP)

In 2025, Connecticut released its updated Wildlife Action Plan for 2025–2035, approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Every ten years the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection leads a thorough revision of the plan in collaboration with species experts, Tribal Nations, conservation partners, and the public. The result is a shared blueprint—not merely a DEEP document—for conserving the state’s native fish, wildlife, and plants and the habitats that sustain them.

The Plan also assesses twelve major habitat types. Forested uplands still cover more than half the state, yet many are under pressure from pests, disease, and fragmentation. Wetlands and freshwater systems support the greatest number of species while facing pollution and invasive species. Coastal and marine habitats contend with sea-level rise and development. Cross-cutting threats—climate change, habitat loss and degradation, invasive species, and pollution—amplify one another and shape the actions proposed in the plan. Numbers and categories matter. They give us a common language and a framework for prioritizing limited resources.

SGCN

At the heart of the WAP are the Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). These are native species that meet one or more criteria of vulnerability: state-listed as threatened or endangered, low abundance or limited distribution, declining populations or habitats, or particular sensitivity to threats. The 2025 ten year Plan identifies 573 SGCN.

SAP

Alongside them are 515 State Assessment Priority Species (SAPS)—taxa for which more information is needed before we can fully understand their status. Together they form a list of 1,088 priority species that will guide conservation attention over the coming decade.

Yet lists alone rarely move the heart or change daily practice.

Why Write About VON?

That is why this new Earthmonk Journal series will take a different approach. Rather than surveying the entire inventory of SGCN, I will spend time with individual species of concern that belong to the woodlands, streams, early-successional openings, and wetland edges of the places I walk every day—Kent Falls, Macedonia Brook, Housatonic Meadows, the broader Litchfield County landscape and else where in the state of CT.

Each journal post will explore one species: its natural history and ecological role, why it appears on the SGCN list, the primary threats it faces, the conservation actions identified in the Plan, through the mind of the Earthmonk.

Earthmonk will also reflect on what its presence (or absence) teaches about attention, interdependence, and our responsibility as stewards of a shared creation. Observations from iNaturalist projects, phenology notes, and the quiet work of habitat management will ground the writing in place.

This is not a catalog of decline. It is an invitation to look more carefully, to learn the particular stories of the creatures that still inhabit these woods and waters, and to consider how ordinary acts of care—protecting a nest site, restoring young forest structure, reporting a sighting, simply noticing—participate in a larger work of conservation that extends through 2035 and beyond.

Call To Action

The WAP itself is clear: conservation is a collective responsibility. The journal posts that follow are one small contribution to that shared effort—an attempt to listen more closely to the species of greatest need and to invite others to do the same.

The CCC

As we continue our Earthmonk’s walk along these quiet trails, a brief word for those less familiar with this chapter of our forests’ story. The Civilian Conservation Corps—known simply as the CCC—was born in the depths of the Great Depression in 1933, a New Deal initiative under President Franklin Roosevelt. It enlisted hundreds of thousands of young, unemployed men across the nation, offering them purposeful work in the wilderness. Clad in simple uniforms and living in rugged camps, while planting trees, building trails and roads, fighting fires, recovering from floods and restoring lands scarred by earlier exploitation. In Connecticut, some twenty-one such camps took root, channeling the vigor of these “CCC boys” into lasting stewardship. It was labor not merely of survival, but of renewal: hands turning idleness into legacy, much like the Desert Fathers who found in disciplined toil a path to contemplation and fruitfulness.

In the 1930s, at Camp Cross in the NW corner of Connecticut (Company 182, S-51), a CCC camp, young men under Governor Wilbur Cross and State Forester Austin F. Hawes planted thousands of seedlings with hand tools for thirty dollars a month. Today, a six-million-dollar federal grant in Hartford has yielded scarcely one hundred trees amid audits, lawsuits, and bureaucratic haze. What does this reveal about stewardship of God’s creation?

The Call of the Wilderness Cell

The sun filters through the white pines as we begin our walk near the old Camp Cross site in Housatonic Meadows. These trees, many planted by CCC enrollees in the early 1930s, stand tall and straight, their roots gripping soil once scarred by charcoal iron operations. The Housatonic river murmurs nearby, a constant companion. I pause, water bottle in hand—much like a desert hermit with his simple crosier—and breathe in the silence broken only by birdsong and running water. These forests are my daily cell for lectio divina—not merely reading scripture, but reading the book of creation with calloused hands and attentive eyes. Here, one practices the asceticism of presence: observing, stewarding, and listening.

The CCC boys knew this rhythm instinctively. Arriving in 1933, one of the first camps in Connecticut, they lived under military discipline yet with a lay monastic purpose. Named for Governor Wilbur Cross, Camp Cross embodied state-federal cooperation led by Forester Austin F. Hawes, whose vision turned unemployed youth into caretakers of the land.

We walk onward. The path feels solid, built by those same hands. In this wilderness, distractions fall away. No endless emails or Zoom calls—just the work before you. This is the purifying desert the Fathers sought: not barrenness for its own sake, but a place where sloth (acedia) is confronted and fruitfulness restored. How different from the administrative “urban glaciers” of our cities today, where funds wither amid complexity. Let us continue our journey.

Ascetic Labor in Connecticut’s Living Wilderness

Our steps carry us toward Macedonia Brook, a short drive or longer contemplative hike from Housatonic Meadows. Along the way, we speak of the broader CCC presence in Connecticut—camps at Cockaponset, Pachaug’s Camp Lonergan, Shenipsit—but our focus remains here, where Camp Cross boys worked the meadows and forests.

These were no pampered crews. Many at Camp Cross were World War I veterans. They earned thirty dollars a month—most sent home to struggling families—living in tents and barracks with simple rations. Hand tools exclusively: axes, mattocks, crosscut saws, shovels. No bulldozers or chainsaws. Dawn-to-dusk toil over cleared cut lands, they built trails, water holes, picnic areas, and swimming spots still used by families today. They planted tens of thousands of seedlings locally—specifically, 45,000 red pines in 1933 and another 28,500 trees of various species in 1936 at Housatonic Meadows alone—contributing to Connecticut’s broader efforts of hundreds of thousands (780,000) of trees statewide.

At Macedonia Brook State Park, their craftsmanship endures most visibly. Walk with me along the CCC road—roughly three miles of hand-built thoroughfare with massive native stone retaining walls and carefully crafted culverts. Built 1935–1937, it parallels the brook, blending into the landscape with gentle curves via on-site materials. It represents the epitome of sustainability. Today, it serves hikers and cross-country skiers—a testament to embodied skill and relentless effort.

One day in the early spring, late in the afternoon, I approached Macedonia Brook tentatively with my tenkara fly fishing rod, the water still cold from winter. No fish rose that afternoon despite patient casts. Yet the constant babble of the brook became a Divine hymn—drawing me beyond myself into deeper communion with something far greater, as the CCC boys must have felt their labor echoing in creation’s praise. In the sweat and rhythm of their days, they lived ora et labora—pray and work—long before I named it so. Their legacy stands as living psalms: pines shading campers at Housatonic Meadows, stone walls holding firm against time.

This was ascetic labor: physical mortification forging character, skill in forestry and firefighting, and purpose amid the Depression. Governor Cross and Forester Hawes provided clear local oversight, yielding tangible fruit. Their work remains because it was rooted in reality, not reports.

Fruitlessness in the Urban Desert of Hartford

In 2023, Hartford received a six-million-dollar USDA Urban & Community Forestry grant under the Inflation Reduction Act. The goals were noble on paper: expand tree canopy in disadvantaged areas, plant trees, provide green spaces, education, and outreach. Politicians announced it with fanfare.

Reality, per the city’s own auditors: scarcely one hundred trees planted after years. Heavy expenditures on salaries with minimal fieldwork. Staffing shortages, poor supervision, no detailed procedures. A federal lawsuit from a former employee alleging she was instructed to make “misleading representations” in reports to secure reimbursements. Auditors expressed they were “very concerned” about the Office of Sustainability’s ability to manage the grant and meet the 2029 deadline.

When I walk along the hand-built road at Macedonia Brook or pause beneath the white pines of Housatonic Meadows—trees planted in those brief spring and fall weeks by CCC boys wielding mattocks between road crews and firebreaks—I marvel at their ascetic focus. Not every hour was spent planting, nor every season; their diligence was targeted and seasonal amid many tasks like trails, firebreaks, storm recovery and infrastructure. Yet their labor yielded forests at a cost of roughly twelve to thirty dollars ($12-$30) per tree in 1930s wages—adjusting for inflation to today’s dollars, still only about fifty to one hundred fifty dollars ($50-$100) per tree when spreading the full program effort. In the bureaucratic “urban forests” of Hartford, millions flow year-round into meetings with scarcely a sapling to show—equating to around sixty thousand dollars per tree ($60,000) planted so far. One man with a shovel in the purifying wilderness accomplished what layers of process cannot.

In my stewardship work across state parks and forests, we achieve real conservation with limited budgets through presence on the land—knowing the soil, the species, the seasons. Not remote administration. The bureaucracy breeds spiritual and practical aridity, wasting treasure that could sanctify creation (cf. John 15).

Returning to Desert Discipline in Stewardship

Pausing near an old pine at Housatonic Meadows, we reflect. Why this chasm?

The CCC succeeded through local camps, clear goals, direct forester oversight (Hawes model), and hand-tool embodiment. Accountability was immediate—results visible in planted trees and built roads, even as planting formed only a minor part of their multi-purpose service during the year. Subsidiarity lived: central authority should have a subsidiary function to local action which is closest to the land.

Today, federal-state complexity dilutes responsibility. Incentives favor reporting over results. Work ethic erodes when labor becomes abstract. Embodied knowledge—of shovel, soil, and ecosystem—yields to meetings, memos and process. The stark efficiency gap, from tens of dollars per tree born of sweat in spring and fall plantings to tens of thousands in perpetual administrative overhead, reveals a deeper spiritual failing: acedia disguised as governance.

As a CT DEEP employee walking these same legacies daily, the gap is palpable. My tenkara afternoons and chainsaw work in stewardship remind me: fruitfulness demands vigilance against sloth. The Desert Fathers warned of acedia in their cells; we face it in spreadsheets and grant cycles. “Urban Forests” cry for exodus—to simpler, accountable, prayerful practices.

Hope remains in volunteer plantings, private stewardship, efficient local programs, and training from the likes of the CFPA and CT DEEP. My blogging, and reflective walks in these woods, seek to raise awareness and bridge the divide. Recover the desert simplicity: fewer distractions, more diligent hands rooted in patristic zeal and Catholic care for creation (St. Francis’ Canticle echoes in these pines).

The brook’s hymn at Macedonia calls us back—from bureaucratic wastelands to the purifying wilderness of faithful labor.

A Monastic Call to Fruitful Communion

As our peripatetic walk concludes near Camp Cross, the light shifts through the canopy. Legacy pines stand sentinel, their branches swaying like monks at prayer. The CCC boys’ ascetic toil rebukes and invites. Modern failures highlight the path home.

In the “desert” of our cities and the arid zones of administration, let us return to prayerful, fruitful stewardship. Ora et labora—sweat, know-how, accountability before God and neighbor. Plant where you are.

Visit Housatonic Meadows, Macedonia Brook, and these living monuments. Volunteer. Advocate for transparent, local conservation. Support programs that value hands over bureaucracy.

The Earthmonk continues walking. The woods await your steps. May our labors bear fruit that lasts, to the glory of God.

Connecticut Woods, June 2026

In the shadowed realms of Fenton Tract Forest, nestled betwixt Storrs and Mansfield in the rugged heart of the University of Connecticut, we gathered—a band of six alumni from the CT Master Woodland Manager program, three stout UCONN forestry students, and the venerable Prof Tom Worthley, our Ahab of the arboreal chase. ‘Twas an intermediary level chainsaw class, a rite of passage for those who would tame the tangled storm damaged groves and fell the pest infested giants.

There is something addictive about the smell of burning gasoline and oil, the sound of chainsaws buzzing, and the thunder of a dead ash tree hitting the forest floor. It shortens your breath and pumps adrenaline into your bloodstream.

The day dawned crisp, with the autumn sun piercing the canopy like shafts of light through a cathedral’s vault, illuminating our quarry: a grove of aspen besieged by hazard ash trees, those spectral sentinels ravaged by the insidious emerald ash borer. These pests, those minuscule marauders from distant shores, had bored under the skin of the ash, leaving them brittle and treacherous, ready to crash upon the unwary like the masts of a storm-tossed brig.

Under Prof Worthley’s keen eye—his beard as grizzled as the bark of an ancient oak—we set to our labors, chainsaws roaring like the bellows of some mythic beast. We learned the art of the cut, the precise notch that directs the fall, the backcut that severs the fibrous bonds of life. A planning session included a hazard assessment, felling plan, escape plan and a stump plan. Felling and bucking we practiced, gaining precious time upon our saws, slicing through the lifeless ash trunks with the fervor of whalemen lancing blubber. Limbs crashed, sawdust flew in golden clouds, and the forest echoed with the triumphant thud of timber yielding to man’s unyielding will.

And so we pressed on, our fellowship forged stronger in the shade of the forest. We even mastered a cunning craft: fashioning a vise from a mere tree stump, a humble pedestal transformed into a steadfast holder for our saws, as if the woods themselves lent tools to their own unmaking. By day’s end, the aspen grove breathed freer, cleansed of its perilous burdens, and we, the lumberjacks of this terrestrial voyage, emerged wiser, wearier, and ever more attuned to the grand, inscrutable narrative of the wild. With over 20 miles of trails, this forest is a mosaic of rugged hills, shimmering wetlands, and historic paths that echo with the footsteps of centuries past. Popular trails like the Shenipsit Trail offer sweeping vistas, while the loops around Great Pond invite quiet contemplation amid vibrant wildlife.

Guided by Hilary Lisowski, a certified wildlife tracker whose explorations of Meshomasic have revealed the tracks of black bears, bobcats, and beavers, our Fellowship of Earthmonks embarks on a journey to uncover the stories etched in mud, bark, and bloom. Though Andy Dobos, renowned for his wisdom at the Cattail Gathering, could not join us, Hilary’s leadership promised a day of discovery. On June 28, 2025, at 9:00 AM, we gathered under a sky cloaked in clouds, the air thick with the scent of impending rain. A gentle drizzle kissed our faces as we stepped onto the trails of Meshomasic, our boots sinking into the damp, loamy earth. The forest was alive with subtle symphonies—the rustle of leaves, the distant call of a tree swallow, and the soft patter of raindrops on the canopy above. Hilary, with her deep knowledge of these woods, led us forward, her enthusiasm infectious as she pointed out the first signs of life: a cluster of sweet pea vines, their delicate pink petals trembling in the breeze. Their legacies continue to inspire and guide conservation efforts across the United States, ensuring the preservation of America's natural treasures for future generations.

Who Is George Perkins Marsh?

The Fabric of Time

In Elaris, where mountains coiled like the arcs of a cosmic spiral, time was a Fabric, not a thread. Its strands—past, present, future—wove through the village, orbiting, touching, knotting, crafting fate from starlight and song. The elders called it the Fabric of Time or the veil, a living tapestry that sang of unity. At the village’s heart stood a stone tablet, carved by the seer Aeloria four centuries ago, its prophecy spiraling in ancient script: “When the weave tightens, the Starborn will shine, born of the past, forged in the now, fated by the yet to come.” Beside it, tales spoke of the Song of the Fabric, a lost melody sung by Aeloria to harmonize time, its notes faded but its power enduring. The tablet and song were Elaris’s lodestones, proof that the future could sing to the past.

Now, ash darkened the skies, cast from unseen volcanoes. The river dwindled, crops crumbled, and fear coiled through Elaris. Eyes turned to the tablet, whispers to the song. Was this the shadow foretold? Was the Starborn near? The Fabric was tightening, its braids converging, and at its center stood Kael, a weaver whose tapestries held Elaris’s soul.

The Present Thread

Kael’s Spiral

Kael, twenty-five, was no hero, though his hands wove otherwise. Calloused from the loom, they crafted tapestries of harvests, storms, and stars. His mother, Eryn, a weaver, left him two relics: a silver shuttle, carved with spirals, and a starstone pendant, a gem etched with spirals that glowed in moonlight. “Weave truth, Kael,” she’d said before dying when he was ten, “and time will sing with you.” The pendant hung at his chest, its warmth her echo.

Kael’s dreams were relentless, vivid as memories yet alien: a hill under a meteor-streaked sky, a silver loom cloaked in a star-threaded veil, its fabric weaving a glowing tapestry. A voice—his own, older—called, “Kael, knot the Fabric.” Another showed a woman carving a tablet, her shuttle and pendant glowing, the veil draping her. A third revealed the veil in a void, threading past and future, its spirals pulsing like the pendant. Each morning, Kael woke clutching the pendant, the dreams stitching into his soul.

The elders summoned him to the tablet. Elder Mirren, her silver hair braided like time, spoke. “Kael, time is knitting. Your dreams, the veil, the pendant—they’re from the future spiral, aligning with Aeloria’s past. The prophecy names the Starborn, and you stand at their knot.”

Kael gripped the shuttle, the pendant warm. “I’m no savior. My mother wove beauty, not fates. Why me?”

Mirren’s eyes gleamed. “The Fabric chooses the knot. Eryn’s relics, your dreams—they’re threads of past and future, spiraling around your present. Their radii are equal, Kael. You are the axis.”

The intersection at Kael’s present—the crisis—was the knot where his triumph reached back to Aeloria’s vision, Taryn’s song, and Kael’s dreams, weaving the Starborn’s rise.

Soren, a traveler with a shimmering cloak, entered Elaris, his eyes ancient. He lingered by Kael’s loom and Taryn’s flute, tracing their spirals. “You weave and sing time,” he told them. “The veil, the pendant, the song—feel their harmony.”

Kael bristled, clutching the pendant. “These are my mother’s. Who are you?”

Soren smiled. “A thread in the Fabric. I’ve seen the loom. Eryn knew their light.”

Lira challenged Soren. “My brother believed in songs and signs, and it drowned him. Give me truth.”

Soren’s gaze softened. “Truth is the Fabric, Lira. Your loss, Taryn’s song—they weave time. Forge with them.”

Kael’s dreams deepened: a silver loom cloaked in a star-threaded veil, meteors blazing, his future voice whispering, “Knot the Fabric.” Aeloria carved the tablet, her pendant and veil glowing, humming the Song of the Fabric. Taryn appeared, her flute weaving the veil’s spirals, saying, “Sing with me, Kael.” The veil, pulsing like the pendant, threaded time.

Taryn’s dreams echoed: the veil over a hill, the song’s melody guiding her flute, Kael’s tapestry glowing. The veil was the Fabric’s symbol, its retro-causal light tying Aeloria, Kael, Taryn, and the future.

The Knitting Ceremony

The Fabric’s Weave

As the crisis deepened, the elders called the Knitting Ceremony to weave a communal tapestry. Villagers brought threads—wool, memories—each a strand. Kael led, his shuttle dancing, the pendant glowing. Taryn played her flute, the Song of the Fabric’s fragments rising, its spirals mirroring Kael’s tapestry. Lira offered a thread from her brother’s cloak, her skepticism softening. “For him,” she whispered.

Soren wove a silver thread, their eyes on Taryn and Kael. The tapestry and song grew, spirals and stars emerging, the pendant and flute flaring. The ceremony knit hope, retro-causally inspired by the future Starborn, echoing Aeloria’s song. Lira gripped Taryn’s shoulder. “Your song’s weaving us, kid.”

The Knotting Ceremony

The Fabric’s Knot

As ash choked the air, the Knotting Ceremony sealed the prophecy. The tablet glowed, Mirren’s voice rising: “The Fabric tightens, past and future align. Starborn, knot our time.”

Kael, emboldened by the Knitting Ceremony, placed the shuttle and pendant on the tablet, their spirals aligning. Taryn played the Song of the Fabric, its full melody restored, harmonizing the crowd. Lira placed her spiral-etched blade, her voice steady. “For my brother, and Elaris.” The tablet flared, the veil vivid in Kael’s mind. Eryn’s memory—“The pendant sings time”—merged with Taryn’s song, Aeloria’s vision, and his future. The Fabric knotted (( r-past = r-now = r-future )), retro-causation’s heart.

The Weaving

Elaris Reborn

Kael wove tapestries with the shuttle, the pendant glowing, depicting the veil and song. Taryn’s melody rallied spirits, her flute a beacon. Lira forged spiral-etched tools, grinning. “You and Taryn wove me, Kael.” Soren guided, their knowledge from the future. The Knitting Ceremony’s tapestry hung, its spirals a map. As the river flowed, meteors lit the sky. On the hill, Kael unfurled his tapestry, Taryn played the Song, and the pendant glowed. The star-threaded veil shimmered, the Fabric’s knots alive. The villagers cheered, naming Kael Starborn.

Soren, shimmering, said, “The song sings,” and dissolved. Kael felt the Fabric loosen, the knot passing.

Epilogue

The Veil’s Harmony

Decades later, Elaris thrived. Kael, an elder, taught weavers, Taryn musicians, the shuttle, pendant, and Song of the Fabric in their hands. Lira forged spiral-etched tools, her love with Kael a knot. The tablet stood, its prophecy a song of unity.

Kael climbed the hill, the veil and song vivid. The loom turned, waiting for new knots. Aeloria’s vision, Soren’s thread, Taryn’s melody, Kael’s future—they shone, spiraling back to sing the past. The pendant glowed, a harmony of the fabric of time

“Nature has a way of inviting us to see beyond the surface,” the Earthmonk began, “to shift between perspectives—grand and minute—and through these shifts, we can discover spiritual truths hidden in plain sight.” He gestured to the forest before us. “Let us consider, for example, the ecosystem of this very forest.”

We paused on the trail along an open vista, and he invited me to take a moment to zoom out—to look at the forest as a whole. From where we stood, the trees seemed to stretch endlessly, a living blanket of green that rose and fell with the contours of the land. From this distance, the forest felt unified, a single entity breathing life into the earth.

“Do you see,” the Earthmonk asked, “how everything here is connected, each tree, each creature, each blade of grass forming part of a greater whole? This perspective teaches us unity, how every living thing comes together to form something far greater than itself. It’s like the spiritual body—the Church, society, even the natural world—each individual piece indispensable to the harmony of the whole.”

"In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life—no disgrace, no calamity, which nature cannot repair. Standing on the bare ground—my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space—all mean egotism vanishes. I become a transparent eyeball; I am nothing; I see all; the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me; I am part or particle of God."

As we hiked higher up the mountain, he led me to a single tree. Its bark was gnarled and weathered, moss covering its base. We knelt, zooming in now, to observe the intricate life forms that thrived in the tiny spaces between the bark and the moss. “Here,” the Earthmonk said softly, “is a world within a world. Every organism, no matter how small, has a role to play. That fungi, that tiny beetle—they’re just as critical to the forest’s health as the tallest tree. And isn’t it the same with us? Our smallest actions, the things we might consider insignificant, can ripple out into the world, contributing to the greater good. It’s a reminder to never dismiss the small moments, the quiet acts of kindness—they, too, have a profound place in the universe’s design.”

We continued our peripatetic walk, the Earthmonk ever watchful of the path ahead and the forest around us. As we reached a clearing, the broad shoulders of Mount Riga loomed before us, rugged and timeless. “Let us now turn our thoughts to the mountains,” he said, stopping to admire the Taconic mountain range. “When you see these peaks, what do they speak of?”

From afar, the mountains appeared eternal, their ridges standing as silent witnesses to millennia of earth’s movements. “Zoom out,” he said, “and you will see the scale of time itself. These mountains have been here for millions of years, formed by forces beyond our comprehension. They have weathered storms, earthquakes, the passage of time itself. In them, we can find a spiritual lesson about patience, resilience, and the humbling knowledge that our lives are but brief moments compared to the grand timescale of nature.”

He let the silence linger before guiding me to a rock at our feet. Picking it up, he held it in his palm, showing the smooth, speckled surface. “And yet,” he said, “even a single rock tells a story. Zoom in on this stone, and you see the layers that were formed over eons, the intricate patterns and colors that reveal its long journey. Spiritually, this teaches us that within each moment, within each of us, there are layers of experience and history waiting to be understood. No person, no moment is ever as simple as it seems.”

The Earthmonk set the stone down gently, his fingers tracing its surface as if honoring the time it had endured. “Both perspectives are true—the vastness of the mountains and the intricacy of the rock. We, too, are like this. We are part of something much larger than ourselves, yet within each of us is a depth, a complexity, a world of experiences and memories.”

As we resumed our walk, the Earthmonk’s attention shifted to the sky, where clouds gathered on the horizon, hinting at rain. “Let us consider, now, the life cycle of water,” he said, his voice carrying a reverence for the element that sustains all life. “Look up, and zoom out. The water in those clouds has traveled the world. It was once a tear drop, then part of the oceans, evaporating into the air, only to return to the earth as rain drop. This cycle is ancient and continuous, a grand story of transformation, renewal, and interconnection. It reminds us that everything in life is in flux, part of a cycle much larger than we can fully understand. Our lives, too, follow cycles of growth, loss, and renewal.”

As if on cue, a single droplet of rain fell, landing softly on a leaf beside us. The Earthmonk knelt once more, beckoning me to observe it closely. “Now zoom in. See this droplet, how it clings to the leaf, reflecting the world in its curvature? It contains multitudes—perhaps microorganisms, perhaps it will serve as life-giving water for an insect, or simply fall to nourish the soil below. This is the power of reflection. In this single droplet, you can find the entire universe mirrored. Spiritually, this teaches us about mindfulness, about being present in the moment, understanding that even the smallest things can contain great significance.”

We stood in quiet contemplation as the rain began to fall more steadily, a soft rhythm that seemed to echo the lessons of the day. “Zooming out and zooming in,” the Earthmonk said, “are both necessary. We need to see the grand, sweeping landscapes of life, to understand our place in the larger story of creation. But we must also take the time to zoom in—to observe the small, often overlooked details, for it is there that we can find the profound beauty and wisdom that enriches our spirits.”

As we concluded our walk and neared the end of the trail, Mount Riga still standing as a silent guardian behind us, the Earthmonk turned to me with a final reflection. “Remember, these shifts in perspective are gifts. They remind us of the interconnectedness of all things—how the vast and the intricate are not separate, but woven together into the Unity Of Opposites. To walk this path, both literally and spiritually, is to learn how to balance these perspectives in our lives. For in understanding the whole, and in appreciating the details, we come closer to understanding the divine.”

And with that, we left Mount Riga behind, the lessons of the day etched into my mind like the layers of the rocks we had touched, the droplets of rain still clinging to the leaves, and the mountains standing, ever patient, on the horizon.

The Earthmonk walks in silence beside me, his hands tucked loosely into his robe’s sleeves, his steps deliberate, as if in sync with the earth beneath him. He often lets these walks begin without words, giving the surroundings their due moment to speak. Today, the expansive mirror of the Sound, so calm in its reflection of the sky, beckons us to delve deeper into its meanings.

“Tell me,” the Earthmonk begins softly, his eyes on the water, “when you see your reflection in nature, what do you see?”

“The soul is like a clear stream of water that reflects the beauty of its surroundings when it is still. But when the waters are troubled, we see nothing clearly. In stillness, God’s image is reflected in us.”

His question hangs in the air for a moment. It’s simple, but like all of his questions, it invites a much deeper contemplation. I pause at the edge of the water, where the tide has receded, leaving behind small pools, each one reflecting a different piece of the world around us: the sky, the reeds, the occasional bird skimming low. One pool, near my feet, mirrors my own face.

"I suppose," I say slowly, "I see myself, but also something more. There’s a connection, a reminder that I’m a part of this world, even if I don’t always feel it."

The Earthmonk nods thoughtfully, his gaze still fixed on the horizon where the sky and sea blur together. “The mirror of nature often shows us more than just our physical form. It reveals our place within the larger ecosystem. It can make us feel small or grand, depending on how we choose to see it.”

He gestures toward the water, where our reflections shimmer momentarily, then break apart as a breeze ripples the surface. “But reflections aren’t always clear, are they?”

“No,” I agree, watching as the distortion warps our images. "Sometimes they’re twisted, confusing."

The Earthmonk smiles at this. “Indeed. Just as in life, our perception of nature can be skewed by movement, by outside forces, by our own inner turmoil. Yet even in those distortions, there is truth. It’s about learning to see beyond the ripples.”

He stops walking, his gaze shifting to me now, his eyes bright with that familiar depth of understanding. "When the water is still, the reflection is perfect—crisp, almost unreal in its clarity. But that stillness is rare, especially in nature. The wind, the current, the passing of time—everything leaves its mark."

I nod, thinking back to times when I’ve seen such moments of perfect stillness in nature—times when the world seems to pause and offer a glimpse of itself as it truly is. They are fleeting, but unforgettable.

"How do we find those moments of clarity in our lives, or in our relationship with the environment?" I ask him, realizing that this is the heart of my own reflection today. “When everything seems to be in motion, how do we see clearly?”

“A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.”

The Earthmonk tilts his head slightly, considering the question. "Clarity," he says slowly, "comes not from forcing stillness, but from embracing the movement. We must understand that life—like these waters—is always in motion. The key is to find our own stillness within. To see the reflection for what it is, not just in moments of perfection, but also in its distortions. That’s when we can begin to truly see.”

As we walk further down the beach, the Earthmonk leads me into a conversation that touches on time—on how nature, like the water before us, reflects the passage of seasons, the shift of days into nights, and the constant change that is a part of all living things.

“Look at the trees over there,” he points to a cluster of oak and maple at the edge of the sand dunes, their leaves just beginning to turn. “They, too, reflect time. The passing of years in their rings, the change of seasons in their colors. What do they show us about the continuity and change in nature?”

“Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water is clear?”

I think about this for a while as we walk. The trees stand firm, grounded in the earth, but they are never the same from one moment to the next. Each leaf, each branch carries the mark of time, yet the trees remain, growing taller, deeper.

“They remind us,” I say finally, “that even though everything changes, some things endure. And maybe that’s what reflection is about—not just seeing the moment, but understanding the flow of time within it.”

The Earthmonk smiles at my words, a quiet approval in his expression. "Yes, exactly. The water reflects the present, but in doing so, it carries with it the memory of the past and the promise of the future. That is what nature teaches us—that everything is connected, and that our actions today will be reflected in the world of tomorrow."

We stop at a large tidal pool, where the water is still enough to perfectly reflect the sky above us. It’s a beautiful sight, the soft clouds mirrored so clearly that it’s hard to tell where the sky ends and the water begins. The Earthmonk kneels beside it, touching the surface lightly with his fingertips, sending ripples through the reflection.

“The future,” he says, watching the ripples spread, “is in our hands. What we do now will shape the reflections we see in years to come. The question is: will those reflections be ones we are proud of?”

He stands, brushing the sand from his robes, and begins walking again, leaving me to ponder the truth of his words. The tide is coming in now, and with it, the water rises, covering the sand, washing away the footprints we’ve left behind.

As I watch the water claim the shore, I realize that the Earthmonk’s lesson today is not just about reflections, but about responsibility. The reflection we see in nature is not just a mirror of ourselves—it’s a reflection of the world we are creating. Every action, every decision, ripples outward, shaping the future.

And in that moment, I understand: the still waters of Silver Sands, the clear reflections they offer, are more than just a surface—they are a window into the deeper truths of the natural world. Through them, we see not only ourselves, but the legacy we leave behind.

As we near the end of our walk, the Earthmonk turns to me one last time. “Remember,” he says softly, “reflection is not just about seeing—it’s about understanding. And with understanding comes action.”

With that, he nods toward the horizon, where the sun is beginning to set, casting long shadows across the beach. The day is ending, but the reflections, I realize, will stay with me long after the light fades.

In this quiet, reflective space, I feel a sense of peace—an understanding that while the journey is long, it is one we must all take, step by step, reflection by reflection, on the way toward a deeper connection with the earth, and with ourselves.

We begin, as the Earthmonk often does, with a question. He stops, looking out across the river, and asks, “In the natural world, life is in a constant state of transformation. Consider the Monarch butterfly, which begins its life as a tiny egg. How might this journey from birth to death mirror our own lives?”

He unfolds the journey of the Monarch, a species that lives with purpose written in its DNA—a tiny egg clinging to a milkweed leaf, seemingly insignificant, yet brimming with potential. “From the moment it hatches, it embarks on a journey of transformation,” he says, his voice a low whisper of reverence. “The caterpillar’s hunger is insatiable. It consumes, grows, and sheds its skin, and as it does, it’s preparing for something remarkable, something greater than itself.”

The Earthmonk pauses and invites us to reflect, silently gesturing toward the milkweed plants growing along the path. He continues, “We, too, spend much of our lives in stages. The caterpillar phase is like our own youth, a time of growth and learning, driven by appetite and instinct. But one day, it stops, creating a chrysalis—a form of rest that is essential for change. In the silence of the chrysalis, the caterpillar dissolves and reshapes, a profound rebirth that transforms it into a butterfly. It is no longer what it was, yet all that it was is essential to what it has become.”

As the Earthmonk speaks, I can feel the weight of his words. I think of the times in my own life when change seemed impossible, yet somehow, I emerged different, stronger. This parallel humbles me.

"Thanks to impermanence, everything is possible. Life itself is possible. If a grain of corn is not impermanent, it can never be transformed into a stalk of corn."

The Earthmonk smiles as if reading my thoughts. “Once it emerges, the butterfly is no longer bound to the earth. It takes to the skies, driven by an inner calling, undertaking one of nature’s most incredible migrations. The Monarch’s journey is perilous, stretching thousands of miles from North America to Mexico. Some perish along the way, but others persevere, guided by a mysterious wisdom passed down through generations. The butterfly, with its paper-thin wings, somehow finds its way over mountains, across cities, and over deserts.”

I can’t help but marvel at the resilience of these fragile creatures, enduring storms, hunger, and exhaustion, yet pressing onward. The Earthmonk’s voice softens as he reflects, “The Monarch reminds us that the journey is not always easy. We, too, face hardships, and at times, life feels fragile and fleeting. But each stage, each hardship, is part of a greater story—one that continues beyond us. The Monarch’s final act is to lay eggs, ensuring the cycle continues, though it may never see the fruits of its labor. So too are we called to live in ways that renew life, to act as caretakers, even when we may not reap the benefits ourselves.”

We continue along the greenway as the Earthmonk leads us to the edge of the Still River, its waters murmuring a quiet song. “The river, too, has its own life cycle,” he says. “It begins as small streams and tributaries high in the hills, gaining strength and size as it flows down toward the Housatonic. But unlike the Monarch’s journey, the Still River’s path has been one of adversity.”

He recounts the river’s troubled past—a history of pollution, neglect, and abuse as factories along its banks once discharged toxins into its waters. For decades, the river struggled under the weight of human industry, its ecosystem fragile, with fish, birds, and insects in peril. But despite it all, life clung on, as stubborn and resilient as the Monarchs in their migrations.

“And yet,” the Earthmonk reflects, “this river is an emblem of resilience. Even after so much harm, it still flows, carrying seeds, fish, and the promise of renewal. Conservation efforts, community advocacy, and changing values have all contributed to its revival. The water today is cleaner than it has been in decades. Trees, plants, and wildlife are returning to its banks, signaling that the river, like the butterfly, can transform and renew.”

He gestures at the clear water gliding over stones, tiny fish darting just below the surface. “The Still River teaches us that each stage of life, each setback, and each recovery is part of a larger continuum. Life is not linear, but cyclical—birth, death, decay, and rebirth. In caring for the river, we honor that cycle. We embrace the role of caretaker, knowing that our actions today will ripple through generations yet to come.”

The Earthmonk stops and poses his second question: “How does each stage of life reflect this cycle of renewal and continuity? What can we learn from this river’s resilience?”

As I watch the river flow, I think about my own life, the seasons of struggle and renewal. I see how my actions, though seemingly small, can contribute to this cycle, just as each raindrop contributes to the river’s flow.

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience."

The Earthmonk observes my silence and says, “When we act with compassion, not only toward each other but toward nature, we contribute to a cycle that sustains life. The river’s recovery reminds us that healing is possible, even in the face of adversity. It teaches us that renewal is not merely a return to what once was but a rebirth into something new, stronger, more enduring.”

As we walk back along the path, he leaves us with a final thought: “To live fully, we must honor each stage of the journey—the birth, the transformation, the decline, and the renewal. We are, all of us, like the river and the butterfly, part of an endless cycle of life. And so, we walk this path, ever grateful, ever mindful, honoring each step as part of a greater whole.”

In the stillness that follows, I feel the weight of his words settle within me, a reminder of the cycles that surround us and the part I play within them.

In the glow of Selden Neck State Park, where the stillness of the woodland is thick, I set out on another of my peripatetic journeys with the Earthmonk. His presence here feels as natural as the starlight breaking through the trees, illuminating the path before us. We’re far from the everyday world, immersed in the quiet mystery of this secluded peninsula along the Connecticut River. Tonight, we’re drawn to a unique subject—fluorescence, the silent light of nature, a phenomenon where even in the darkest places, life finds a way to shine.

As we walk under the stars, I observe the Earthmonk, a figure both rooted and radiant. He is grounded in the teachings of the past, of faith and wisdom, yet carries a vibrant presence that feels new, unbound by the ordinary. He walks with a purpose, every step leading us deeper into this ancient land, guiding us not only through the landscape but through the essence of nature itself. The leaves crunch beneath us, the air hangs thick with early evening dew, and I feel the weight of the night’s questions settling in my mind, waiting to be unraveled.

“Fluorescence,” I begin, voicing the theme of our discussion. “It’s as if nature finds ways to make its secrets known, even in the dark.”

He nods, a smile forming at the edge of his lips. “Yes, life’s light in darkness, a reminder that even where things seem hidden, or forsaken, there’s a beauty that prevails.” He gestures to the forest around us. “Fluorescence and bioluminescence reveal that all life, in its own way, is on a journey toward light, even if it has to generate its own. The natural world teaches us that adaptation, resilience, and a kind of quiet defiance are possible even in the harshest shadows.”

We stop near a fallen log, where he motions for me to sit. The Earthmonk’s presence has a way of transforming even the simplest place into an outdoor dojo, a sacred space of learning. “Tonight,” he begins, his voice low and reflective, “we’ll look at three examples of fluorescence that thrive here in Connecticut—hidden lights that remind us of nature’s mysterious adaptations.”

The Earthmonk begins with foxfire fungi. “This fungus, Panellus stipticus, has a subtle greenish glow that appears only in the dark. It grows on rotting wood, consuming what is dead or discarded. But what does this glowing mean? What does it show us about resilience?”

I ponder his question. The idea of thriving in decay, in spaces others might avoid, speaks to the strength within fragile things. “Perhaps it’s about finding purpose in what others overlook,” I suggest. “The foxfire doesn’t just live in darkness—it lights up in it, making beauty out of decay.”

“Exactly,” the Earthmonk agrees, nodding. “This glow, this soft light, reminds us that there’s more to survival than mere existence. Foxfire adapts by illuminating, by breaking down what is old, transforming it into something new. In many ways, isn’t that our journey too? To take the difficulties we encounter, the struggles we face, and find ways to make them light our path?”

His words settle in, and we walk on, passing by dense trees and boulders, their surfaces tinged with moss and lichen, harboring small worlds of life hidden to most. I feel my own understanding of the world expanding, stretched by the simplicity of nature’s wisdom. For every shadow, there is light; for every death, renewal.

Soon, we arrive by the river, where the Earthmonk brings up our second example, the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). While rare in Connecticut’s waters, their presence is a reminder of life’s fluorescence in the ocean. “These creatures drift freely,” he says, “unbound by territories, moving with currents and tides. They glow faintly, their fluorescence not bound by their form, but existing in the space between.”

The Earthmonk pauses to let his words settle. “What, then, does this fluidity teach us about our own boundaries? Can we, too, glow in spaces that aren’t ours, that are foreign or unexpected?”

It’s a question that stretches me beyond my familiar frame of mind. The moon jellyfish adapts to its surroundings with ease, its glow a reminder that nature’s boundaries are softer, more permeable, than we often think. “Maybe we’re meant to be more fluid,” I say. “To adapt, and to bring our light wherever we find ourselves, even if we drift outside the familiar.”

The Earthmonk smiles, his eyes alight with approval. “Yes. Fluorescence in the ocean teaches us that light is a gift that transcends place, that our own glow, our essence, can shape and soften the boundaries of the world around us. The jellyfish adapts to change not by shrinking, but by glowing even brighter.”

Our journey leads us into a darker, more remote section of the park, where a damp stone wall glistens faintly. Here, the Earthmonk turns on a UV light and brings up our final example, the Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus). “These salamanders fluoresce under UV light, a light we can’t see with the naked eye,” he explains. “But under the UV light, they reveal something unexpected. Tell me, what does this hidden glow teach us about ourselves?”

The salamander’s fluorescence is subtle, a quality hidden within. I think about how often we judge things by appearances, without looking deeper. “It’s a reminder,” I say, “that there’s more to see than what’s visible on the surface. Maybe it tells us to look beyond first impressions, to find the hidden light within things.”

The Earthmonk nods thoughtfully. “Precisely. Fluorescence, in its essence, is about layers. There is an unseen depth to the world, a radiance that waits to be noticed. The salamander, a creature of the earth, holds this quiet luminescence, revealing that even in stillness, there is light. The hidden is as much a part of life as the seen. Our journey isn’t just to observe the world around us, but to perceive the glow within it.”

We fall silent, contemplating this final truth. The salamander’s hidden glow, the jellyfish’s boundaryless luminescence, the fungi’s renewal in decay—they all reveal different ways of existing, surviving, thriving. They show us that nature’s glow isn’t just about adaptation, but about wisdom, about resilience and possibility, even in the darkest places.

As we make our way back, I feel as if I’ve seen the world in a new light. These tiny sparks of fluorescence hidden throughout nature remind me that there’s so much more to life than the obvious, the expected. “Fluorescence,” I say, “is more than survival—it’s an expression of life, of strength, even in darkness.”

The Earthmonk’s gaze is warm as he regards me. “Yes. Life’s glow, as fleeting or hidden as it may be, is a guidepost. It teaches us to embrace resilience, to find beauty where it’s least expected, to shine even when no one is looking. This is the way of nature, and it can be our way too.”

With that, we get in our kayaks and leave Selden Neck State Park behind, but the insights from this journey remain. In the quiet depths of the woodland, under the stars, and within the hidden light of creatures small and silent, lies a message of hope and perseverance. We, too, can find ways to shine—through resilience, through fluidity, through an embrace of life’s hidden depths.

And as the Earthmonk fades into the fog and shadows, I realize that, perhaps, we are all on this journey toward light.

The Earthmonk stopped and turned his gaze across the forest, his eyes calm yet sharp, as if he could see beyond the surface. He spoke softly, “As winter approaches, creatures all around us begin to vanish. But it’s not the vanishing of death—it’s the stillness of survival, the wisdom of hiding. They know what we often forget: that sometimes, to endure, you must embrace the quiet, fall back from the world, and become hidden.” His words felt like they drifted through the trees, sinking into the snow, each one deliberate and steady.

I watched him as he continued walking, thinking over his words. After a few minutes, I asked, “So why do they hide? What is it that the creatures of this forest understand about the arrival of winter that we don’t?”

The Earthmonk smiled, his breath swirling in the cold air. “They understand that to survive the cold, they must become part of it. Take the wood frog, for instance,” he said, bending down to brush some frost from the frozen ground. “This small creature does something truly miraculous. When the frost comes, it allows itself to freeze. Its heart stops, its blood thickens, and it seems as though it’s died. But in truth, it’s simply waiting, conserving, becoming one with the cold until the world is ready to wake again.”

I marveled at the thought of the wood frog, this creature so tiny yet so resilient, able to endure the winter by surrendering to it. “That’s remarkable,” I said. “It’s as if it trusts that life will return.”

“Yes,” the Earthmonk replied, nodding. “It does. And it teaches us that sometimes the greatest strength lies not in fighting, but in surrendering. In our lives, too, there are winters—times when the world seems unyielding, and nothing seems to move forward. We resist, struggle, and wear ourselves thin, rather than letting go, trusting that this too shall pass. The wood frog shows us that there is wisdom in yielding, in allowing ourselves to go still and hidden, if only for a time.”

As we continued our walk, a light snow fell softly, and the forest grew even quieter. After some time, the Earthmonk turned his gaze down a slope, where thick undergrowth lined the forest floor, blanketed by snow. “Consider the eastern chipmunk,” he said, a warm fondness in his tone. “It, too, hides, but not in the same way. The chipmunk prepares for winter’s demands long before they arrive. It collects food, burrows deep, and then rests—yet not in a sleep as deep as the frog’s. No, it wakes now and then, nibbling on the supplies it’s stored.”

“So it doesn’t fully hibernate?” I asked.

“Not quite,” he replied. “The chipmunk teaches us a different lesson—that of balance and preparedness. It knows that life’s winter will come, as it does for all of us. And so, it prepares, little by little, trusting that its work will sustain it, but also knowing to rest when it must. There’s wisdom there, too,” he said, giving me a thoughtful look. “Perhaps in our own lives, we could learn to lay down our burdens, to rest, and to be content with what we’ve gathered.”

The chipmunk’s approach struck a chord in me. It was a reminder to prepare, yes, but not to hoard or cling. Instead, it felt like a call to live in harmony with what was needed, without the frenzied race to have more, to be more, even when the world slows.

Eventually, we reached a frozen pond, its surface dusted with snow, edges framed by reeds now brown and brittle. The Earthmonk gestured to it, his voice low. “And here, beneath the ice, lies the painted turtle. Unlike the frog or the chipmunk, the turtle submerges itself completely, hidden in the mud. It does not need oxygen for months at a time—it simply waits, its heart barely beating. In this stillness, it teaches us perhaps the most profound lesson of all: that some seasons of life require us to go within, to a depth we might otherwise ignore. It lives unseen, yet perfectly sustained, in silence.”

I looked down at the ice, imagining the turtle in the depths, cloaked in mud, a small, still presence beneath the frozen pond. The Earthmonk’s words hung in the air, as if echoing through the trees. “To go within,” I murmured, reflecting. “That feels like a kind of meditation, doesn’t it? A turning inward.”

“Yes,” he agreed, his voice gentle but firm. “In a world that praises the loud, the visible, the active, there is great power in choosing to go within, to seek the quiet hidden places of ourselves. The turtle’s hibernation is a reminder that there are seasons when our souls, too, need to retreat, to turn away from the world, and listen to the silent depths. When we allow ourselves that silence, we discover something enduring, a wisdom that thrives beneath life’s surface.”

We stood there for a long time, gazing at the frozen pond. I could feel the Earthmonk’s presence beside me, steady, unwavering. The landscape around us was filled with life hidden and waiting, trusting in the promise of spring even as winter held the earth in its cold embrace.

As we turned to leave, the Earthmonk spoke one last time. “Nature teaches us, again and again, to adapt to our environment. Not to resist every hardship, nor to shrink from it, but to be flexible, to find our own way through winter’s trials. Each creature has its own path, its own way of enduring. And so do we.”

As we made our way back along the frosty path, his words stayed with me. The forest around us was quiet, a hidden world of resilience and rest, life sustained by the wisdom of retreat. I felt a deep sense of peace settle over me, a reminder that sometimes, the greatest strength is in knowing when to be still, when to be hidden, when to simply trust in the turning of the seasons.
