The U.S. Geological Survey Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center launched a provisional ET product in 2020, offering on-demand, field-scale global coverage derived from Landsat data through the EROS Science Processing Architecture (ESPA) platform. The ESPA interface provides ET data for cloud-free Landsat overpasses starting in 1982 with Landsat 4 through the current Landsat 9. The ET data are delivered as a Provisional Level-3 Science product created using the Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) model. Landsat surface temperature and reference ET are the main model drivers along with vegetation index and net radiation for model parameterization. A large volume of Landsat-based ET orders (e.g., over 1,200,000 images from June 2020 through December 2025) around the world indicate increasing awareness and application of the ET data. The ESPA platform enables land and water resource managers and researchers to access a first-order ET product without requiring advanced knowledge of remote sensing technology or evapotranspiration modeling. [They] present the methodology and workflow of the on-demand Landsat ET product and its performance evaluations over diverse hydro-climatic settings. The product can help estimate field-scale consumptive water use and thus quickly and consistently assess historical water use, allocation, and budget to inform water management under changing environments. The name Naivasha comes from a Maasai word meaning &#8220;that which heaves,&#8221; an apt description of the freshwater lake over the past 25 years. Satellite altimetry measurements of the lake&#8217;s depth indicate an increase of about 7 metres (23 feet) since 2010, roughly the height of a two-story building. Over continental regions, evapotranspiration (ET) is often limited by water availability. In this study, [the authors] spatially quantify how much of the total atmospheric water vapour evaporated most recently from land and calculate the relative contribution of that water vapour to the atmospheric radiative budget. Using a combination of tracer-enabled Earth system model simulations and radiative transfer calculations, [they were] able to explicitly quantify the 3D distribution of terrestrial vs. oceanic water vapour, and the spatial contribution of each to the surface and top of atmosphere radiative budgets. [They found] that over many continental regions, more than half of the total column-integrated water vapour originates from land ET, and that this vapour contributes up to 30 W/m&#178; of longwave radiation into the surface in the annual mean (about 10% of the total). Over the past five decades, an accelerated mass loss of Himalayan glaciers has been observed, making it critical to assess the role of precipitation, particularly extreme events in modulating glacier health. This study compiles 182 in situ glacier-wide mass-balance observations from 26 glaciers in the western Himalaya, India, from 1974 to 2023. Observing an alarming negative cumulative mass balance of around &#8722;26 &#177; 1.67 m w.e., with more frequent years in recent decades showing negative mass balance exceeding &#8722;1.5 m w.e. / a, highlights the ongoing severity of glacier mass loss. However, over several years, there have been relative mass-balance gains or reduced losses, often linked to extreme precipitation events (EPEs), with annual fluctuations between 0 and 5 events. Cross-correlation analysis supports this, showing a direct response of glacier mass balance to EPEs variability. The EPEs are mainly fed by moisture supply from Western Disturbances (60.2%), followed by the Indian Summer Monsoon (16.4%), cyclogenesis (6.3%), and WD&#8211;cyclogenesis interactions (4.6%), while other synoptic systems account for the remaining <span>&#8764;</span>12%, together driving strong moisture convergence and severe precipitation episodes. These synoptic drivers determine the frequency and intensity of EPEs and influence the precipitation phase snow versus rain, thus impacting accumulation and melt processes differently. Statistical evidence indicates that EPEs temporarily increase accumulation, counteracting seasonal mass losses in certain years with moderate same-year sensitivity&#8230;&#8221;</p><p>#Glacier Further, I am not endorsing a specific approach, just sharing this paper and some of my personal thoughts from my professional experience(s).]</span><br><span>H/T @Letters To A Pre-Scientist</span><br><span>[If you&#8217;ll excuse my pretentious presumptuousness in adding my own rambling commentary on this commentary&#8230; when you eventually step into the STEM workforce, one of the best habits you can build is simple:</span><br><span>CONTINUE TO BE CURIOUS, have fun, keep exploring, be excited, keep asking questions, keep stretching yourself.</span><br><span>It sounds basic, but it&#8217;s one of the most reliable ways to grow in any science or technical career.</span><br><span>When I talk with folks I mentor in spatial data analysis&#8212;whether formally or just because we ended up working together&#8212;I try to emphasize that the real power of GIS today isn&#8217;t in being &#8220;the GIS person in a corner.&#8221; It&#8217;s in being part of a technical team solving a real use case, with your part of the puzzle being spatial data and spatial thinking. You don&#8217;t have to be (and can&#8217;t be) the subject matter expert on everything, but you do want to understand enough about the different pieces of a project to be genuinely helpful. Get curious about each use case, especially the technical aspects and the desired outcomes. Ask questions. Learn the context. Collaborate.</span><br><span>Let the domain experts teach you, and teach them what spatial thinking can add. That back and forth is where great work happens. Progress really shows up when your skills fit into a bigger technical picture&#8212;and when you&#8217;re willing to grow alongside the team rather than staying in a pigeonhole. Pigeonholes are for the birds, not for professionals starting out in STEM.</span><br><span>The analogy I often use: years ago, companies had typing pools&#8212;whole rooms of specialized typists banging out documents for everyone else. Today, we all type our own. In the same way, modern STEM work isn&#8217;t about a being a &#8216;GIS boffin in the back room.&#8217; Spatial thinking is most powerful when it&#8217;s woven right into the technical conversations across the team.</span><br><span>So, as you enter the workforce, be open, keep learning, and bring your skills into the shared problem solving stream. You&#8217;ll grow faster, help your teammates more, and be part of genuinely exciting science AND SOLUTIONS; makes you such an asset too!]</span><br><span>&#8220;The traditional &#8220;pipeline&#8221; model of workforce development - whereby an individual follows a fairly linear, predictable, and structured path through K&#8211;12, undergraduate, and graduate education into career-length government or academic positions - no longer captures the reality of a modern STEM [education and then] career. Nor does it represent the broad range of interdisciplinary and innovative opportunities that STEM professions now offer across a wide range of industries, nonprofits, and other organizations. The pipeline model has also contributed to the historical exclusion of individuals from minoritized ethnic, racial, sexual and gender identity, disability, and service status...</span><br><span>It is time for us to dismantle the pipeline. Instead, let&#8217;s take inspiration from the natural world we study and envision a new model that captures the opportunity, variability, and responsiveness of a modern STEM career; that embraces the diversity and experiences of the people who engage in it; that recognizes the many on-ramps, pathways, and career pivots that real life induces; and that provides a framework in which there is a place in STEM for everyone. This research employs qualitative methods, including key-informant interviews and focus group discussions with farmers, local leaders, officials, and water-users in Dudhauli and Siraha municipalities supplemented by field-observation, document analysis and literature review, to explore the interplay between seasonal water fluctuations, socio-economic inequalities, and conflicts over water and land resources. The findings demonstrate that monsoon floods cause significant damage to irrigation infrastructure and alter water flows, resulting in conflicts between upstream and downstream households/users in Dudhauli. During the dry season, limited water availability forces multiple households to share wells, heightening tensions over water allocation and use. In Siraha, widespread flooding is followed by acute water scarcity, which exacerbates competition among neighbors for access to wells and handpumps. The research highlights that households with greater resources and social-influence are better positioned to manage water insecurity, reinforcing existing power imbalances and deepening water-related conflicts. Although local governance structures, local knowledge systems, and informal community mechanisms play a role in mediating conflicts, their effectiveness is often constrained by underlying structural vulnerabilities. The study concludes that hydro-climatic extremes act as amplifiers to environmental and socio-economic-political vulnerabilities, generating and reshaping household-level conflicts at communities. This emergence reflects a shift away from hydro-climatic control alone toward river flow regimes described by biophysical alteration, governance arrangements, and broader development pathways operating across scales. Building on these properties, we identify three priority directions for science: integrating multi-scale and cross-sectoral drivers of flow alteration; recognising rivers as socio-economic systems shaped by institutions and distributional dynamics; and supporting adaptive and robust decision-making frameworks that explicitly address uncertainty. Essential Variables (EVs) have the potential to support these approaches by describing the status of the Earth system through monitoring and modeling. The different classes of EVs can be organized along the environmental policy framework of Drivers, Pressures, States, Impacts and Responses. The EV concept represents an opportunity to strengthen monitoring systems by providing observations to seize the fundamental dimensions of the Earth system</p><p>The Group on Earth Observation (GEO) is a partnership of 113 nations and 134 participating organizations in 2021 that are dedicated to making Earth Observation (EO) data available globally to inform about the state of the environment and enable data-driven decision processes. GEO is building the Global Earth Observation System of Systems, a set of coordinated and independent EO, information and processing systems that interoperate to provide access to EO for users in the public and private sectors. The progresses made in the development of various classes of EVs are described with their main policy targets, Internet links and key references</p><p>The paper reviews the literature on EVs and describes the main contributions of the EU GEOEssential project to integrate EVs within the work plan of GEO in order to better address selected environmental policies and the SDGs. A new GEO-EVs community has been set to discuss about the current status of the EVs, exchange knowledge, experiences and assess the gaps to be solved in their communities of providers and users. A set of four traits characterizing an EV was put forward to describe the entire socio-ecological system of planet Earth: Essentiality, Evolvability, Unambiguity, and Feasibility. A workflow from the identification of EO data sources to the final visualization of SDG 15.3.1 indicators on land degradation is demonstrated, spanning through the use of different EVs, the definition of the knowledge base on this indicator, the implementation of the workflow in the VLab (a cloud-based processing infrastructure), the presentation of the outputs on a dedicated dashboard and the corresponding narrative through a story map.</p><p>The concept of EV started in the climate sphere and spread to other domains of the earth system but less so in socio-economic activities. More work is therefore needed to converge on a common definition and criteria in order to complete the implementation of EVs in all GEO focus areas. [They] selected CMIP6 climate models for future simulations and bias-correction methods through a comprehensive performance assessment... Building on these previous studies, the present research further evaluates the reliability of combining robust climate-model selection with optimal bias-correction methods to improve the reliability of hydrological simulations. Two astronauts have landed safely on the Red Planet with their research rocket &#8211; ready to collect soil samples and bring them back to Earth! The rocket features a modular design: it can be extended or shortened, depending on the mission, and docks onto a mobile landing platform that serves as a base station on Mars. Movable crane arms help collect the soil samples and securely store them inside the rocket &#8211; either in the front storage compartment or in the rocket-shaped nose cone, ready for launch. The rocket includes seats for both astronauts. It&#8217;s a really huge amount so even small changes to this system can cause big changes in the atmosphere&#8230;</p><p>&#8226; Methane is about 30 times more potent as a greenhouse gas, though only in the short term because it breaks down more quickly over 10 to 15 years. That makes it a strong and immediate concern and for future generations. Carbon dioxide, by comparison, is less potent but it lingers much longer, which makes it a bigger threat on the timescale of centuries&#8230;&#8221;</p><p>--</p><p>&#8220;Permafrost soils are particularly vulnerable to climate change. To assess and improve estimations of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) budgets it is necessary to accurately map soil carbon and nitrogen in the permafrost region. In particular, soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks have been predicted and mapped by many studies from local to pan-Arctic scales. Several studies have been carried out at the Canadian Beaufort Sea coast, though no regional maps of terrestrial carbon stocks based on spatial modelling has been conducted yet. This study combines available field data from the Canadian Yukon coastal plain and uses it to map regional SOC and N stocks using the machine learning algorithm random forest and environmental variables based on remote sensing data. [The authors] developed models using the data for the entire region and separate models for the coastal mainland area and Qikiqtaruk Herschel Island. Each model was used to map SOC and N stocks for its respective area. [They] assessed the performance of the different random forest models by using crossvalidation. [They] further assessed model results using the Area of Applicability (AOA) method and the quantile regression forest approach, comparing the results and discussing their implications within the context of both methods. [They] explore[d] local differences in soil properties and how soil data distribution across the region affects the accuracy of the predictions of SOC and N stocks. The estimated SOC stock for the upper metre is 48.7<span>&#8201;</span>&#177;<span>&#8201;</span>6.6<span>&#8201;</span>kg/m&#178; and the N stock 3.03<span>&#8201;</span>&#177;<span>&#8201;</span>0.30<span>&#8201;</span>kg/m&#178;. The average SOC stocks vary significantly when creating separate models for subsets of the data. Qikiqtaruk Herschel Island is geologically different from the coastal mainland and has on average lower SOC stocks. Including Qikiqtaruk Herschel Island soil data to predict SOC stocks at the mainland has large impact on the results. Differences in N stocks were not as dependent on the location as SOC stocks and rather differences between individual studies occurred. Such temporal coverage is more feasible with the planned Landsat 10 routine acquisition of broadband imagery than with task-based hyperspectral collections&#8230;&#8221;</p><p>--</p><p>&#8220;ABSTRACT: To advance crop type mapping in support of global food and water security, this study compared three spectral configurations: (A) the full 60-band DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) hyperspectral narrowband (HNB) dataset, (B) a 14-band subset of DESIS-derived HNBs aligned with the planned Landsat 10 (formerly Landsat Next) spectral configuration (400&#8211;1000 nm), and (C) DESIS-based simulations of Landsat 10 superspectral broadbands. The analysis was conducted in California&#8217;s Central Valley, hereafter referred to as &#8220;the Central Valley&#8221;, during the peak growing month of August. DESIS imagery from August 2021, 2022, and 2023 was used sequentially for model development, testing, and independent validation. Over these three years, DESIS provided extensive hyperspectral coverage of much of the 4 million hectares in the Central Valley&#8217;s. Analyses were performed on Google Earth Engine using two pixel-based supervised classifiers, Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), to differentiate three major crop classes: row crops, grapes and tree crops, and winter wheat/fallow/other. The highest overall accuracy (86%) was achieved using SVM in combination with either the full DESIS hyperspectral dataset or the 14 DESIS narrowbands corresponding to Landsat 10. This finding aligns with earlier studies showing a small number of strategically positioned narrowbands can be optimal for crop type classification. Use of the narrowband datasets resulted in substantially higher accuracy (overall accuracy of 86%) compared to the simulated Landsat 10 broadbands (overall accuracy of 75%), supporting previous studies highlighting the utility of narrowbands. Despite the high accuracy using August imagery, the study indicates more granular crop type classification will require multi-temporal observations spanning the full phenological cycle (June&#8211;October), especially for a large number of crop classes. Acquiring task-based hyperspectral imagery over such large areas throughout the growing season remains operationally challenging.
