The cakes take shape from an element of nature. I played with ideas from my immediate surroundings; plants, flowers, animals, sceneries, but nothing resonated.

In early July, we took a last-minute trip to California, and while wandering the idyllic town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, a Chinese lantern flower was growing up a trellis along the sidewalk. The petals hanging like a paper lantern, crimson veins over a warm apricot yellow. It was elegant, dramatic, and delicate.

I knew it would be the foundation of this summer’s dress.

The next hurdle was translating it into a cake.

Cakes are inherently comforting, but this also needed to be light.

Starting with the literal interpretation of an upside-down flower came the base; an upside-down peach cake. The color of veins on the flower made me think of raspberries, so the second layer became a raspberry mousse. The final layer was a thin almond chiffon cake because the ruffled stamen reminded me of chiffon layers. As a final component I wanted the cake to be decorated as a flower, so it was finished with a Swiss meringue buttercream.

The peaches were sweet, the mousse added enough freshness to keep everything balanced, and the almond chiffon added a layer of dimension. It is probably my favorite flavor combination I’ve made this year.

Confident in the character of each element, both on its own and as part of the whole. I was ready to move on to decorating.

I have never been particularly fond of buttercream. Nevertheless, I assumed homemade Swiss meringue buttercream would change my mind. It didn’t.

It was too rich, and when I finally cut into the cake I realized I was eating around the frosting rather than with it. And what can I say about piping. Well, it’s a lot more satisfying to watch videos online than to actually attempt.

Between achieving the correct consistency, pressure control, the proper piping tip, and mixing colors that never resemble what you envision, decorating became the most technically difficult part of the entire cake.

The irony is that after trying nearly every piping tip, decorating three small cakes, and cleaning up. I found a booklet in the box illustrating what each tip was meant to do.

The color presented another lesson.

The inspiration had always been the Chinese lantern flower; warm yellow petals traced with vivid raspberry-red veins. My buttercream never reached those sunset tones. After three failed attempts, I accepted what I had out of necessity to move forward.

I wouldn’t call this cake decorating a success. But I would absolutely make it again. Perhaps just with fruit, coulis, or real flora next time.

Fortunately, these projects have never been about becoming a pastry chef.

The desserts exist for a different reason. They force me to immerse myself. To notice color before I choose fabric. To study texture before I construct. To understand structure before I sew.

Once the cake was finished, I could move on to the part that comes naturally. Designing the dress.

Rather than translating the flower literally, I wanted to follow its behavior. Chinese lantern flowers hang downward. Peach upside-down cakes are baked upside down before being inverted. Both begin with gravity working in the opposite direction.

What would an upside-down dress look like?

Traditionally, visual weight is constructed below the waist. Full skirts, trains, volume, and movement begin at the hips. Instead of building drama into the skirt, I kept the lower half long, narrow, and subtle.

The volume migrates upward.

The color palette is borrowed from the flower, since the cake colors just weren’t it.

Layers of warm peach chiffon become the petals draped over a silk charmeuse, while narrow red silk organza traces each panel like the veins running through the petals. I would be interested in experimenting with hand-dyeing parts of the fabrics to create a sunset gradient. Finishing the gown with jeweled lantern blooms embellishing the hem.

With every dessert and every dress, I learn something new. This one taught me that:

• Colors miss their mark

• Piping is an art medium that requires practice

• Buttercream still isn’t for me

Regardless, none of those shortcomings diminish the original idea. Every failed swirl, every wrong shade. With every mistake the vision of the dress became clearer.

Some are invisible in the best possible way. They fly under the radar; well made, understated, and dependable. They are the shoes you reach for without thinking because they serve their purpose. Comfortable, versatile, and timeless. They demand little attention yet earn their place through years of faithful service.

For the most part, my own collection lives in this category. Worn well after they tear at the soles. Bought or inherited by someone who loved them first. Lasting well beyond their expected lifetime.

Then there are fashionable shoes.

Built around the excitement of what was presented on runways to impact the audience and start conversations. They are playful but frequently evolve into a trend; a fleeting fascination before the attention inevitably shifts to the next season. There is nothing inherently wrong with them. Fashion thrives on experimentation.

There is a third category. These are statement shoes.

They possess an individuality that lives beyond a trend. Noticed by those who those who are seeking something different through proportion, craftsmanship, material, or an unexpected feature. They represent art and unveil another layer to the person wearing them.

Traits of this category are: first, eye-catching. Second, impeccably made. And third, if fortunate, comfortable.

Some come from established brands. Others are made by smaller ateliers.

These shoes that become signatures. The ones that make the simplest outfit feel calculated, not because they demand attention, but because they complete a story.

The collection below belongs to this third category.

They are shoes chosen not for their logos or their trends, but because they possess enduring beauty. Shoes that elevate an outfit artfully, revealing a little more about the person wearing them with every step.

There are the shoes that I would hunt down for years, if no longer in production. The shoes I would pass time just admiring. The shoes that speak for me when worn.

For me, The Ballad of the Sad Café by Carson McCullers was the latter.

It would be an injustice to take away the opportunity to immerse yourself in this Southern Gothic novella, and so without saying too much, I will provide you with the essence. Following Miss Amelia Evans, an unusual woman who owns the town store, makes liquor, and seems completely uninterested in fitting into anyone else’s idea of what a woman should be. It is a story about loneliness, love, pride, and the strange ways people become bound to one another. It is unsettling, yet beautiful all at once.

What stayed with me wasn’t a particular scene or line. It was a dress.

Throughout most of the story McCullers describes her through work, habit, and strength. She exists with little concern for appearances. Then, unexpectedly, there is a red dress.

It’s been taking up space in my mind since the first mention of it, it seemed improbable. Imagining it’s cut, practicality, the hand of the fabric.

A red dress belongs to celebration, confidence, romance; in the way we have collectively come to understand it. On Miss Amelia, it becomes something else entirely. It isn’t a transformation into another woman. Instead, it reveals that no person is ever as singular as they first appear.

When I began sketching my own interpretation, I wasn’t interested in recreating the dress exactly as it might have existed in the story. I wanted to design the dress I imagined while reading.

It needed structure, something with presence. A dress that belonged to someone accustomed to taking up space, but that still carried a tenderness she would never admit to possessing. I imagine rich red lustrous cotton with clean lines and careful construction. As if Miss Amelia had sewn it herself, with no regard to being fashionable, but just feeling beautiful. Nothing ornamental for ornament’s sake. Every detail had to feel purposeful.

A recipe never tastes exactly the same in two kitchens, and a garment described on a page will never look identical in two minds. That space between the author’s words and the reader’s imagination is where creativity begins.

This dress lives in that space.

It isn’t Carson McCullers’ dress.

It’s mine.

Or perhaps more accurately, it’s the dress I believe was waiting for Miss Amelia all along.

For the first time we see the dress on a hanger. The peach in the produce aisle. The dining table in a furniture store.
