I’ll kick your butt out of it.”

That is what my friend Nicole Silverman told me the day I admitted I was spiraling. And she meant it.

Nicole is an Army veteran and former intelligence analyst who served with the 82nd Airborne Division. She deployed to Afghanistan on a tour that was supposed to last 12 months but stretched to 15, a change she learned about from the news before hearing it from her own chain of command.

Leaving the military did not immediately give Nicole her identity back. As a military spouse married to an active-duty service member, she has also had to start over every few years and convince employers to invest in someone who may have to move again.

Eventually, Nicole became tired of being told no. She and her husband created Heritage Engravings, and when an overseas move made running that business more complicated, she built A&F Automation to help small businesses create systems that work behind the scenes.

In this final one-on-one conversation of The Architecture of Reinvention, I asked Nicole a question I ask myself more than I would like to admit: When you are spiraling, what actually helps you find your way out?

Her answer was not a five-step framework. It was smaller and more honest: recognize it, take a breath, call someone, spend time with your child, go for a walk, or give yourself permission to go to bed early.

Sometimes resilience is not about pushing harder. Sometimes it is knowing who you can call when you cannot find your way out alone.

In this episode:

Life as an Army intelligence analyst and military spouse

Rebuilding your identity after leaving the military

Marriage across two military careers

Turning repeated job rejection into entrepreneurship

Building Heritage Engravings and A&F Automation

Recognizing a spiral before it takes over

Why having one person you can call matters

CONNECT WITH NICOLE:

A&F Automation: https://www.afautomation.tech

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicole-h-silverman

⭐ If this resonated, please leave a rating or review, it helps reach more women who need this conversation.

🎙️ ABOUT ELEVATE WITHIN Elevate Within is a podcast and community for high-achieving women navigating the messy middle — the space between who you were and who you’re becoming.

🎧 SUBSCRIBE & NEVER MISS AN EPISODE

🎵 Spotify: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis

🍎 Apple Podcasts: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis

▶️ YouTube: Elevate Within Always

📻 Amazon Music: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis

📻 iHeart Radio: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis

⭐ APPLE PODCAST LISTENERS If this resonated with you, a rating or review would mean everything. This week, Claudia delivers.

If you’ve ever tried to figure out what kind of therapy you actually need, and gotten lost somewhere between CBT and EMDR and a dozen acronyms nobody explains, this episode is the one to save. Claudia walks through cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, and somatic therapy, in plain language, with real examples of who each one actually helps.

She also clears up something I got wrong for years: the difference between bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. They get confused constantly, and the difference matters, for how you understand the people in your life, and how you understand yourself.

We also talk about the other lane of healing, the one Tristan Stawicki leaned on in her own journey: reiki, shamanic practice, sage, astrology. Claudia’s take surprised me. It’s not about picking a side. It’s about knowing what you’re actually seeking, and finding a therapist trained broadly enough to meet you there.

Tristan’s episode centered on a moment in the financial district in New York, looking out at the Statue of Liberty after a major win, and feeling nothing at all. That feeling is where her healing journey began. This episode is the map of the many roads available once you decide to take that journey too.

And if no one told you they loved you today…I love you. — Sandy

You Already Know. Then the apology. A gift. A trip somewhere nice. And for a few weeks, things are good again, good enough that you start to believe the version of him you fell in love with is the real one after all.

Callie Greenberg described that cycle to open her episode, and she named the mechanism inside it with a precision that stopped me: love bombing. Not spontaneous affection. Calculated. Timed to land exactly when she was most likely to stay.

It’s one part of a story that also includes a delayed endometriosis diagnosis, infertility, chronic pain her own doctors dismissed for years, and a hysterectomy she grieved in a body that had already been fighting to be believed for most of her life. By the time Claudia and I sat down to talk about her episode on this week’s roundtable, one thread kept surfacing: Callie was gaslit by the people who studied the body for a living, and gaslit by the person who was supposed to protect her. At the same time.

Why Talk Therapy Isn’t Always the First Door

Claudia, who is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, explained something I hadn’t fully understood before: chronic exposure to trauma changes brain chemistry. It makes the emotional brain override the logical one. The nervous system settles into survival mode as a baseline, not an exception, and it stays there scanning for danger long after the danger has technically passed.

That’s part of why some trauma survivors reach for somatic work, or work with ketamine or psychedelics under medical supervision, before they reach for a couch and a fifty-minute hour. Not because talk therapy doesn’t work. Because a nervous system that has spent years protecting itself will resist going anywhere near the wound directly, and for some people, other modalities lower that resistance enough to let the real work begin.

“These things work in conjunction. It is one hundred percent not a quick fix.” — Claudia Cuevas

Claudia was careful about that distinction, and I want to be careful about it here too. Alternative modalities aren’t a shortcut around therapy. They’re sometimes the on-ramp to it.

When Trauma Has No Language

I told Claudia something on this recording I don’t say often. Years ago, before I could stand on a stage in front of a thousand people without a flicker of nerves, I was a guest on a podcast that asked me to talk about my early childhood. I hadn’t spoken about it in years, not really, not to anyone in California.

My voice started trembling before I understood why. I had to have a drink of water. I have never once been afraid to speak publicly, to a room, to a CEO, to anyone. But that day, my body knew something my mind hadn’t caught up to yet.

Claudia named it immediately: a trauma response. Your nervous system asking, are you sure you want to go there? Remember what happened last time?

When trauma has no language, and mine didn’t for a long time, the body finds other ways to speak. For me it was a scream I couldn’t voice. For Callie, it was a body that kept insisting something was wrong long before anyone would believe her.

The Wisdom That Was Actually a Wound

Here’s the part of this conversation I keep coming back to. So many of us carry decades of pain underneath a version of ourselves that looks, from the outside, entirely put together. People assume we grew up easy. They assume the composure is confidence, that the insight is just wisdom we were born with.

“You’ll never think I have trauma. You’ll just think I’m wise.” - Sandy Davis

I used to wear that as a badge of honor. Look how much I know, I’d think, because I’m wise. The truer version is that I know because I lived through things I had to make sense of alone, and I’ve had to build the language for it one hard year of therapy at a time.

Callie shared her story on our show for the first time anywhere. Not because the pain was new, but because, she told us, it finally felt like a safe place to say it out loud. That’s the whole point of this series. Not to perform healing. To make room for the parts of the story that are still finding their words.

If any part of this is landing for you, and you don’t know where to start, Claudia’s advice was simple: ask someone who loves you what they think you’re avoiding. Sometimes the people closest to us can see the blind spot before we’re ready to name it ourselves.

And if no one told you they loved you today, I love you. — Sandy

This is the first time she’s ever said this publicly.

She was told her pain was normal. This week, Claudia and I sat with that phrase and asked the question underneath it: why are so many high-achieving women vulnerable to exactly this?

The answer isn’t a flaw. It’s a feature turned against us. The same strategic thinking, self-sufficiency, and instinct to solve problems that built our careers is precisely what a manipulator looks for. You’re not attracting them, Claudia said. They’re honing in on you.

We talk through what an actual healthy relationship sounds like (someone asking how can I show up for you, not just what are you giving me), why compartmentalizing emotion at work becomes a weapon against you at home, and the one diagnostic question Claudia gives her clients: when something feels off, is my instinct to fix myself, or to ask whether the relationship is the problem?

We also talk about the shame. The women who divorce after 20 or 25 years and feel like they failed, when really, they just outgrew something that no longer fit.

And if no one told you they loved you today…I love you. — Sandy

She escaped a narcissistic marriage during COVID with a secret office and a relay of friends

Escaping Abuse & Building a Life You Love | Jennifer Jayne

Sandy Davis

It was her birthday. Financial control over money she earned. Medical decisions made without her. Little comments, accumulated over years, that slowly dismantled who she was.

And what came after was one of the most deliberately planned, logistically precise escapes I’ve ever heard described. So many of us treat survival mode like a fact of life instead of a lens we’ve chosen. It isn’t. You can put it down.

This week, Claudia and I go deeper into Deb’s story and into a distinction that reframed something for me live on air: the difference between having self-worth and earning it. Claudia traces that pattern back to childhood, a critical parent, a teacher’s gold star, whatever system first taught us that being loved was conditional on what we produced.

She also gave us a journal prompt I haven’t stopped sitting with: who am I beyond what I produce? And a nugget that actually landed…swap your affirmations for questions, and always end them with today.

I tried it. Why am I good enough today? At 51 years old, hearing myself ask that instead of just declaring it, something shifted. Claudia called it training new neural pathways. recognize.

From the inside...

it doesn’t feel like a leadership problem.

It sounds like:

“Our sales process needs work.”

“We need stronger managers.”

“Maybe the market has changed.”

Those explanations make sense.

Sometimes they’re even true.

But I always wonder something.

If I gave you twice as many leads...

Twice the budget...

Twice the talent...

Would the business move differently?

Or would it eventually find the same ceiling?

That’s an important question.

Because if the ceiling keeps showing up...

it probably isn’t the market.

It’s a leadership pattern.

The Ceiling Beneath the Ceiling

After twenty-five years in operations and leadership, I’ve learned that businesses almost always tell us where to look.

Not through spreadsheets.

Through behavior.

The leader who still insists on closing every major deal.

The CEO who hires talented leaders and then quietly overrides their decisions.

The executive who says they trust their team but still feels the need to approve everything before it moves.

None of those behaviors are mistakes.

They’re evidence.

Evidence that the business has grown faster than the leadership model supporting it.

And here’s the part I think leaders rarely hear.

Those habits weren’t weaknesses.

They were strengths.

They’re what built the company.

That’s exactly why they’re so hard to let go.

Leadership Has Seasons

One of the biggest misconceptions about leadership is that once you’ve found your style, you’re done.

I don’t believe that’s true.

I think leadership has seasons.

The version of you who builds a company from your kitchen table shouldn’t be expected to lead the same way when there are forty people depending on your decisions.

Growth asks something different of us.

Not because we’ve failed.

Because the business now requires something the earlier version of us never had to become.

That’s not an operations problem.

It’s an identity shift.

And identity shifts are rarely solved by another strategic plan.

The Question Beneath the Strategy

People often assume Leadership Advisory is about improving leadership.

I see it differently.

It’s about creating enough space to ask questions that are difficult to ask from inside your own business.

Questions like...

Has my business outgrown the way I still see myself?

That’s a very different question than:

“How do we grow revenue?”

Because sometimes revenue follows naturally once leadership catches up to the business that’s already been built.

Before You Blame the Market...

Before you redesign the sales process.

Before you hire another consultant.

Before you convince yourself demand has disappeared...

Pause for a moment.

Ask yourself this:

If nothing about the market changed...but I changed the way I lead...would this ceiling still exist?

If the answer is no...

The market was never your biggest obstacle.

The business wasn’t asking you to work harder.

It was asking you to become a different kind of leader.

And that’s a very different invitation.

If this resonates and you’d like to explore whether your business has outgrown your current leadership patterns, I’d love to continue the conversation.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://calendly.com/sandydavis212/pattern-discovery-call-60-minutes","text":"Book a Leadership About why we’re more careful choosing a therapist than a partner. ask it, the room gets quiet.

I don’t ask about strategy.

Or revenue.

Or hiring.

I ask something much simpler.

What are you still doing that you don’t remember deciding to do?

There’s usually a long pause.

Then the answers begin.

“I still approve every expense over $200.”

“I still write the biggest proposals myself.”

“I still take every difficult client call.”

“I still don’t fully trust anyone else to close.”

No one says these things with pride.

They say them as though they’ve just noticed them for the first time.

And almost every founder follows with some version of the same sentence:

“I guess I’ve always done it that way.”

That’s the moment I’m paying attention to.

Because leadership patterns rarely arrive as decisions.

They become habits.

And habits have a remarkable way of surviving long after the circumstances that created them have disappeared.

The Business Grew.

The Habit Didn’t.

I don’t believe leaders get stuck because they lack ambition.

Most of the leaders I meet are incredibly capable.

The problem is usually much quieter than that.

The business evolved.

Their leadership didn’t.

Not because they refused to grow.

Because no one told them there would come a day when the habits that built the business would quietly begin limiting it.

Think about the earliest version of your company.

There wasn’t a finance department.

Or an operations leader.

Or someone else to make the call.

Everything depended on you.

You checked every proposal because one mistake mattered.

You answered every client because you were the relationship.

You said yes because revenue mattered more than boundaries.

None of those decisions were wrong.

They were survival.

In fact, they’re probably the reason your business exists today.

The problem isn’t that you learned those habits.

It’s that nobody tells founders when those habits expire.
<div lately.

Success has a funny way of hiding outdated patterns.

From the outside, they look like dedication.

Commitment.

High standards.

Responsibility.

From the inside...

they often feel like exhaustion.

The founder who still reviews every proposal.

The CEO who quietly overrides decisions after hiring talented leaders.

The executive who says they trust their team but still reads every email before it’s sent.

None of those behaviors look alarming.

They look responsible.

That’s why they’re so difficult to see.

Until one day the effort no longer matches the outcome.

That’s usually the signal.

When you’re working harder than ever, but the business isn’t moving with the same ease...

it’s often not a strategy problem.

It’s a leadership pattern that’s outlived its purpose.

Responsible Isn’t the Same as Necessary

This is the part where leaders sometimes become uncomfortable.

I understand why.

No one wants to hear that the very thing that built their company is now getting in the way.

But responsibility changes as a business grows.

It was responsible to approve everything when there were three employees.

It may be irresponsible to still approve everything when there are thirty.

It was responsible to personally manage every client relationship when you were the business.

It becomes risky when the business still can’t function without you years later.

Leadership isn’t static.

Neither are the responsibilities that come with it.

The difficult part is that old habits don’t announce they’ve expired.

They simply keep running in the background...

quietly consuming your time, your energy, and your team’s capacity.

The Hardest Thing to Put Down

Here’s what I’ve learned after more than twenty-five years working inside businesses.

People don’t hold onto old leadership patterns because they’re stubborn.

They hold onto them because those patterns once made them safe.

That’s why letting go rarely feels logical.

It feels emotional.

It feels like sending the proposal without reading it first.

Like allowing someone else to have the difficult client conversation.

Like letting a meeting happen without you.

Small decisions.

Big discomfort.

Not because they’re actually dangerous.

Because your nervous system learned that your presence was what kept everything from falling apart.

This Is the Work

People often ask me what Leadership Advisory actually is.

It’s not about teaching another leadership framework.

There are plenty of those.

It’s about helping founders recognize the operating patterns they’re still carrying, understand why those patterns made perfect sense when they were created, and decide whether they still fit the business and the leader they’ve become.

Because the goal isn’t to erase the person who built the company.

It’s to make sure that version of you isn’t still trying to run a business that’s already outgrown it.

One Question

If your business today looks nothing like the one you started...

ask yourself this:

What am I still carrying that the business no longer requires from me?

Not because it’s wrong.

Because it might be expensive.

In time.

In trust.

In your team’s growth.

And perhaps most importantly...

In your own.

Because businesses don’t stop growing when founders stop evolving.

But they do eventually reveal the gap.

The question is whether you’ll notice it before it becomes your ceiling.

I’m building a collection of Leadership Essays through Elevate Within, exploring the intersection of leadership, identity, reinvention, and the internal patterns that shape how we lead.

If that resonates with you and you’d like to this Manifesto, I thought I was writing about burnout.

I wasn’t.

Then I thought I was writing about reinvention.

I wasn’t.

Somewhere between eight essays, dozens of conversations, and listening to extraordinary women tell the truth about their lives, something became unmistakably clear.

This was never about burnout.

Burnout was the symptom.

It was never about people pleasing.

That was the strategy.

It was never about perfectionism.

That was the protection.

It wasn’t even about success.

Success simply made it harder to ignore what no longer fit.

This Manifesto has always been about something much simpler.

The relationship we have with ourselves.

Everything else grows from there.

We began with one quiet question.

What no longer fits?

Not because something was wrong with us.

Because something inside us had begun telling the truth before we were ready to hear it.

That truth led us to awareness.

Awareness led us to curiosity.

Curiosity became understanding.

Understanding became compassion.

Compassion became practice.

Practice became small shifts.

Small shifts led us back to authenticity.

Authenticity led us home.

Not to the woman we used to be.

To the woman who had been waiting patiently beneath everything we inherited.

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned that being a good woman meant carrying more than we were ever meant to carry.

We carried expectations.

Responsibilities.

Other people’s emotions.

Other people’s comfort.

Other people’s definitions of success.

We learned to smile while we were exhausted.

To achieve while we were unraveling.

To say, “I’m fine,” because it was easier than telling the truth.

Some of us became so good at surviving that we forgot survival was never supposed to become our identity.

No one teaches us that.

We absorb it.

From families.

From workplaces.

From culture.

From generations of women who were doing the best they could with what they had.

This Manifesto was never about blaming what we inherited.

It was about asking one courageous question.

Does it still belong to me?

Over these past weeks, I haven’t been asking you to become someone new.

I’ve been asking you to notice.

Notice the thoughts that were never yours.

Notice the expectations you never agreed to.

Notice the version of success that left no room for your health, your joy, or your peace.

Notice how often you’ve introduced yourself with your résumé before you’ve introduced yourself as a human being.

Notice how quickly you offer yourself criticism instead of compassion.

Because awareness isn’t the destination.

It’s the beginning of freedom.

There is one thing I hope every woman understands before she closes this final chapter.

You are not behind.

You are not broken.

You are not failing because you’re questioning a life that once made sense.

Sometimes questioning is the healthiest thing we can do.

Sometimes exhaustion is information.

Sometimes burnout isn’t your body betraying you.

It’s your body refusing to keep living a life your soul has already outgrown.

I know what it feels like to build a life that looks successful while quietly wondering why it no longer feels like your own.

I know what it feels like to lose people you love.

To lose yourself.

To wonder whether you’ll ever find solid ground again.

I know what it feels like to wake up one morning and realize the life you’ve spent years creating is asking something of you that you can no longer give.

That’s where Elevate Within began.

Not because I had the answers.

Because I needed a place where the questions were allowed.

If these essays have taught me anything, it’s this.

Healing doesn’t happen in one breakthrough.

Healing is rarely dramatic.

It’s usually a quiet decision that no one else notices but you.

The moment you decide to rest before your body forces you to.

The moment you stop apologizing for a boundary.

The moment you tell the truth, even if your voice shakes.

The moment you stop measuring your worth by how much you produce.

The moment you trust your own voice before someone else validates it.

The moment you choose alignment over approval.

These moments rarely make headlines.

But they change lives.

Maybe that’s what living authentically really is.

Not becoming fearless.

Not having every answer.

Not never doubting yourself again.

Simply becoming the kind of woman who no longer abandons herself to keep everyone else comfortable.

And maybe that’s what leadership really is.

Not having all the answers.

Not carrying everything alone.

Not proving your value over and over again.

Leadership begins with the relationship you have with yourself.

Because the way we lead others will always reflect the way we lead ourselves.

So…where do we go from here?

Not back.

Not toward another version of perfection.

Forward.

One honest choice at a time.

One conversation at a time.

One boundary at a time.

One act of courage at a time.

One woman at a time.

If there is one thing I hope you carry with you, it is this.

Question what version of myself, and everything after that would become simple.

I don’t think that anymore.

I think authenticity is something we practice.

Not once.

Every day.

Sometimes every hour.

Because every day we’re invited to choose.

Will I answer from fear...

or from truth?

Will I say yes because I genuinely want to...

or because I’m afraid of disappointing someone?

Will I make this decision because it aligns with the life I’m building...

or because it’s familiar?

Authenticity isn’t a destination.

It’s a series of choices.

I’ve started noticing something.

The moments that change us are rarely dramatic.

They’re almost invisible.

They’re the conversation where we stop apologizing for having a boundary.

The meeting where we admit we don’t have the answer.

The opportunity we decline because it no longer fits the life we’re trying to build.

The afternoon we decide to rest without convincing ourselves we’ve earned it.

From the outside...

none of those moments look extraordinary.

From the inside...

they quietly change the direction of a life.

I think we’ve been taught to look for transformation in milestones.

The promotion.

The business.

The relationship.

The house.

The number in the bank account.

The standing ovation.

But if this Summer Series taught me anything, it’s this:

The biggest changes almost never happen on a stage.

They happen in private.

In the moments when no one is watching.

The moment you choose not to betray yourself.

Again.

Living authentically doesn’t mean we’ll never feel fear.

It doesn’t mean we’ll stop questioning ourselves.

It doesn’t mean every decision suddenly becomes obvious.

It means fear no longer gets the final vote.

It means the voice that spent years protecting us doesn’t automatically become the voice making every decision.

That’s a very different way to live.

I’ve been thinking about leadership through this lens, too.

The leaders I admire most aren’t the ones who pretend certainty.

They’re the ones whose decisions consistently reflect their values.

There’s alignment between what they believe...

how they lead...

and how they treat themselves when no one else is around.

That kind of leadership isn’t performative.

It’s authentic.

Not because it’s perfect.

Because it’s honest.

Looking back at every woman we’ve met this summer, I don’t think what connected them was resilience.

Or ambition.

Or success.

It was courage.

Not the courage to build something extraordinary.

The courage to stop living a life that no longer reflected who they had become.

That’s a quieter kind of courage.

It rarely makes headlines.

But I think it changes generations.

Because every time one woman chooses to live authentically...

she quietly gives another woman permission to do the same.

Maybe that’s what this Manifesto has been about all along.

Not becoming someone new.

Not fixing ourselves.

Not finding the perfect version of who we’re supposed to be.

Simply learning to live in alignment with the person we’ve remembered.

Day after day.

Choice after choice.

Until one day...

our outer life finally begins to resemble our inner one.

The Elevate Within Manifesto | Part VI

Yesterday, I wrote that I no longer believe transformation begins by changing our circumstances.

I believe it begins by changing our relationship with ourselves.

The more I sat with that thought, the more I realized something.

Most of us spend years trying to change our lives...

without ever noticing the relationship we’re bringing into them.

We change careers.

We leave relationships.

We build businesses.

We move to new cities.

We earn titles we once dreamed about.

From the outside, everything looks different.

But if the voice inside us hasn’t changed...

neither have we.

I’ve met women who have built remarkable careers and still question whether they’re enough.

Founders who have created successful companies and still believe they have to earn the right to rest.

Leaders who everyone else describes as confident...

but privately wonder if they’re about to be found out.

Their circumstances changed.

The relationship they had with themselves didn’t.

For years, I thought healing meant becoming someone else.

Someone stronger.

Someone more confident.

Someone who no longer questioned herself.

Someone who had somehow outgrown the little girl who learned to survive before she ever learned to feel safe.

I don’t believe that anymore.

Because healing hasn’t asked me to become someone different.

It’s asked me to become more honest.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I’d been treating every previous version of myself like someone I needed to leave behind.

The overachiever.

The people pleaser.

The woman who measured her worth by how much she could carry.

The woman who believed rest had to be earned.

I saw each of them as evidence that I still had work to do.

Now I see them differently.

They weren’t mistakes.

They were adaptations.

They learned how to survive the life they were living.

The problem wasn’t that they existed.

The problem was that I kept asking them to lead a life they were never designed for.

That changed the way I think about healing.

Healing isn’t pretending those versions of ourselves never existed.

It isn’t replacing them with someone new.

It’s understanding why they showed up in the first place.

It’s recognizing what they protected.

And deciding, with compassion, whether those beliefs still belong in the life we’re living today.

That is a very different relationship.

Not one built on criticism.

One built on understanding.

When we began this Manifesto, we started with a single realization.

Life no longer fits.

That realization became awareness.

Awareness became curiosity.

Curiosity became understanding.

Understanding made room for compassion.

Compassion became practice.

Practice became small shifts.

Small shifts led us back to authenticity.

Authenticity gave us permission to return.

I used to think returning was the destination.

Now I think it was simply the doorway.

Because once we’ve returned to ourselves...

we have to decide how we’re going to relate to the person we’ve found.

I’ve started thinking about leadership this way, too.

The founder who once worked fourteen-hour days wasn’t wrong.

The executive who checked every detail wasn’t broken.

The woman who believed she had to prove herself in every room wasn’t weak.

Those versions of us solved real problems.

They helped us build careers.

Businesses.

Families.

Lives.

But survival was never meant to become our permanent address.

At some point, we have to stop asking survival to lead a life that’s finally safe enough to be lived differently.

Maybe that’s what growth really is.

Not becoming someone new.

Changing the relationship we have with the person we’ve been all along.

Meeting her with curiosity instead of criticism.

Compassion instead of judgment.

Understanding instead of shame.

Because when that relationship changes...

everything else begins to change with it.

Not all at once.

Not perfectly.

But honestly.

Tomorrow...

Remembering who we are is only the beginning.

The harder question is what comes next.

How do we make decisions differently?

How do we lead differently?

How do we stop slipping back into the patterns we already recognize?

Part VII: Living Authentically is about what happens after awareness.

It’s about learning to live in alignment with the person you’ve remembered.

Until then...

Ask yourself one question.

What kind of relationship do I have with myself and would I want someone I love to live with that voice every day?

— Sandy

<div I want women to build incredible careers, lead organizations, start businesses, and continue breaking ceilings. But I also want us to remember something just as important.

When the workday is over, come back to yourself.

Check in with yourself.

Ask yourself what still feels true and what no longer fits.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve taken away from these conversations is that your foundation has to be solid. Because when you stop checking in with yourself, your foundation becomes sinking sand.

And when your foundation starts to give way, everyone you’re carrying begins to sink with you.

That’s one of the reasons I created Elevate Within.

Not because I have all the answers, but because I don’t want another woman to wait until she’s completely disconnected from herself before she realizes something is off.

Success and self-awareness can exist together.

In fact, I think they have to.

So I’ll leave you with the same question.

If someone asked you who you are today and you couldn’t use your job title, your profession, or your role in someone else’s life...

How would you answer?

Elevate Within with Sandy Davis Summer Series Interlude · Architecture of Reinvention length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

The Elevate Within Manifesto | Part V

Over the past few days, I’ve written about recognizing when life no longer fits.

I’ve written about five women whose stories revealed a shared human experience.

I’ve shared The Elevate Within Blueprint, the unexpected framework that quietly emerged from those conversations.

And yesterday, I asked what has become one of the most important questions of my own life:

What’s mine...and what did I inherit?

I thought that question would be the breakthrough.

It wasn’t.

The breakthrough came when I realized something much more uncomfortable.

I was still waiting for permission.

For a long time, I thought the hardest part of change was knowing what to do.

I thought if I could understand the patterns, identify the conditioning, and finally make sense of everything I’d been carrying, the rest would naturally follow.

It didn’t.

Because awareness doesn’t automatically become action.

There’s a quiet space between the moment we see the truth and the moment we choose to live it.

That space is where permission lives.

Looking back now, I can see how often I waited.

I waited until I had more certainty.

I waited until Elevate Within made perfect sense.

I waited until Leadership Advisory fit neatly into a category I could easily explain.

I waited until I could see the entire path before taking the next step.

What I didn’t realize was that I was asking other people to validate a life they were never meant to live.

No one ever told me I couldn’t build this.

No one ever told me I couldn’t write these articles.

No one ever told me I couldn’t believe there was a philosophy emerging underneath the conversations.

The permission I was waiting for...

was my own.

That realization changed something in me.

Because I suddenly saw the same turning point in every woman we had interviewed.

Jenny wasn’t asking for permission to heal.

She was asking for permission to tell the truth.

Blake wasn’t asking for permission to leave a career.

She was asking for permission to redefine success.

Amanda wasn’t asking for permission to be a better mother.

She was asking for permission to believe that caring for herself wasn’t taking something away from the people she loved.

Natalie wasn’t asking for permission to charge more.

She was asking for permission to believe her value wasn’t negotiable.

Maiko wasn’t asking for permission to become someone else.

She was asking for permission to stop hiding parts of who she already was.

Different stories.

The same turning point.

Permission.

Not permission to become someone new.

Permission to stop abandoning the person they had been all along.

Somewhere in the middle of writing this manifesto, another realization quietly appeared.

I thought I was creating Elevate Within.

Instead...

Elevate Within was creating me.

The podcast.

The Blueprint.

Leadership Advisory.

These articles.

None of them were part of the original plan.

They emerged because each conversation invited another question, and each question asked me to be a little more honest than the one before it.

I wasn’t building a philosophy.

I was slowly returning to myself.

Maybe that’s what we’ve misunderstood about healing.

We think it begins with confidence.

Or courage.

Or certainty.

Maybe it begins with something much quieter.

Permission.

Permission to rest.

Permission to change your mind.

Permission to disappoint expectations.

Permission to say no.

Permission to choose differently.

Permission to believe that your life doesn’t have to make perfect sense to everyone else before it begins to feel honest to you.

Maybe returning isn’t one decision.

Maybe it’s a thousand small permissions.

Given over and over again.

Until one day you realize you no longer need anyone else’s approval to become more fully yourself.

Because the person you’ve been waiting for...

has been you all along.
<div
