Some people excuse anger. Others suppress it. Some believe that expressing it freely is healthy. But the Bible directs us beyond simply controlling our reactions. It directs us to examine the heart.

“Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:26–27

Scripture does not teach that every instance of anger is automatically sinful. There is righteous anger. God is angry with wickedness and sin, and Jesus Himself demonstrated righteous anger.

But because our hearts are affected by sin, we need to examine our anger carefully.

The question is not simply:

“Am I angry?”

A better question is:

“What does my anger reveal about my heart?”

Anger Often Reveals What We Want

James gives us an important explanation for conflict:

“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?”
James 4:1

When we become angry, our natural tendency is to focus entirely on what happened.

He disrespected me.

She should not have said that.

They did not listen.

This should not be happening.

Sometimes those observations are correct. Someone may genuinely have sinned against us. Biblical counseling does not require us to pretend wrongdoing is acceptable.

But James directs our attention somewhere else as well:

What is happening within us?

Anger frequently arises when something we desire becomes something we believe we must have.

Respect. Control. Comfort. Recognition. Agreement. Success. Cooperation. Being understood.

Many of these things can be legitimate desires. The problem begins when a good desire becomes a ruling desire.

When someone stands between us and what we believe we must have, anger can quickly follow.

Our Words Reveal Our Hearts

Jesus said:

“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
Matthew 12:34

That means angry words are not merely accidents caused by difficult circumstances.

Pressure reveals what is already happening in the heart.

When harsh words come from our mouths, Scripture directs us to examine where those words came from.

Biblical repentance, therefore, goes beyond saying:

“I shouldn’t have yelled.”

We should confess sinful speech, but we should also examine what produced it.

Was I demanding respect?

Was I determined to control the situation?

Was I unwilling to be inconvenienced?

Did I believe my desires were more important than serving the person in front of me?

These questions move us beyond merely changing behavior and toward genuine heart change.

Scripture Calls Us to More Than Anger Management

There can be practical value in slowing down before responding and recognizing patterns that lead to sinful reactions.

But Scripture takes us further.

God is not merely interested in making our anger more socially acceptable. He is concerned with transforming our hearts.

Paul writes:

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”
Ephesians 4:31

Then Paul tells us what should replace these things:

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32

This is the biblical pattern of change.

Put off: bitterness, sinful anger, harshness, revenge, resentment.

Put on: kindness, patience, forgiveness, gentleness, love.

Christian growth is not simply learning how to control an outburst. It is becoming increasingly like Christ.

Is My Anger Really Righteous?

We should be cautious about labeling our anger righteous anger.

Righteous anger is primarily concerned with God’s glory, truth, holiness, and the good of others.

Sinful anger is often primarily concerned with me.

One helpful question is:

If my anger is righteous, what kind of fruit is it producing?

Is it producing patient correction, prayer, self-control, a desire for restoration, and love for the person who has sinned?

Or is it producing resentment, insults, revenge, coldness, gossip, withdrawal, or a desire to make someone suffer?

James warns us:

“For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
James 1:20

We can correctly identify someone else’s sin while responding to that sin in an ungodly way.

Being right does not make every reaction righteous.

Christ Changes the Angry Heart

Ultimately, sinful anger is not conquered through stronger willpower.

We need Christ.

The gospel reminds us that we have sinned against a holy God far more seriously than anyone has sinned against us. Yet for those who belong to Christ, God has shown extraordinary mercy.

Christ bore the judgment our sins deserved.

We have been forgiven.

That reality changes how we respond when other people fail us.

It does not mean ignoring sin. It does not mean avoiding necessary confrontation. And it does not mean pretending wrongdoing never happened.

We can confront sin without hatred.

We can speak truth without cruelty.

We can establish appropriate boundaries without seeking revenge.

We can forgive because we have been forgiven.

Before You Respond

The next time you feel anger beginning to rise, ask yourself:

What happened?

What did I want?

What am I believing right now?

Is my response honoring Christ?

What would obedience to God look like in this moment?

Then remember the words of James:

“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.”
James 1:19

The goal is not to become someone who never recognizes injustice or wrongdoing.

The goal is to become increasingly like Christ.

Anger can provide an opportunity to examine our hearts, repent where necessary, trust God with what we cannot control, and respond to others in a way that reflects the grace we ourselves have received.

Anger may reveal what is ruling the heart. The gospel reminds us who should rule it.

Artificial intelligence is changing how people search for information, compare services, communicate with businesses, and make purchasing decisions.

A potential customer may ask an AI assistant for recommendations, read an AI-generated summary, or receive a direct answer without reviewing a traditional page of search results.

However, discovery is only the beginning.

Once someone becomes aware of a business, that person must still decide whether the company appears credible, understands the need, and offers a professional experience. Branding and website design continue to play an important role in that decision.

AI may influence how customers find a business, but the brand and website often determine whether they trust it enough to move forward.

Discovery and Decision Are Different Stages

AI-powered search tools can help users identify options and gather information. They may introduce a customer to a business that the person had not previously considered.

The customer may then visit the company’s website to verify the information and determine whether the business is a suitable choice.

At that point, several questions arise:

• Does the business look established?

At the same time, they should not neglect the elements that shape customer confidence.

A clear brand helps people recognize the business. A professional website explains its value. Consistent messaging reduces uncertainty. Useful content demonstrates knowledge. Connected forms and workflows make the next step easier.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

Notice that Paul does not tell believers simply to become stronger. He says, “Be strong in the Lord.” That distinction matters because the armor of God is not a lesson about discovering strength within ourselves. It is about depending upon the strength God provides and standing firmly upon what He has revealed. Spiritual maturity does not eventually make us independent of God. The more we understand the Christian life, the more we recognize our continual dependence upon Him.

Paul then explains the nature of the battle:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

— Ephesians 6:12

It is easy to begin viewing people as the enemy. We may focus on a difficult coworker, family conflict, someone who has mistreated us, opposition to biblical truth, or a culture increasingly hostile toward Christianity. Yet Paul reminds us that there is a spiritual reality beyond what we can see. Satan is real. Temptation is real. Deception is real. Spiritual opposition is real. At the same time, Scripture never presents Satan as God’s equal. He is a created being who remains under God’s sovereign authority. Christians therefore have no reason to live in constant fear of Satan or become consumed with identifying demonic activity behind every difficulty.

Instead, the repeated command in this passage is to stand.

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”

— Ephesians 6:13

God has already provided what His people need for the battle. Paul describes this provision through the imagery of armor, beginning with truth:

“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth.”

— Ephesians 6:14

We live in a world filled with competing claims about truth. Culture encourages people to define truth for themselves, while our own emotions can convince us that something must be true simply because it feels true. Satan himself has been a deceiver from the beginning. The Christian cannot stand firmly while building life upon feelings, opinions, cultural trends, or personal experiences. We need truth, and Jesus identifies its source clearly when He prays, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17).

When our feelings contradict Scripture, Scripture remains true. When culture contradicts Scripture, Scripture remains true. When our circumstances make God’s promises difficult to believe, God’s Word remains true. The believer must continually bring thoughts, decisions, fears, desires, and beliefs underneath the authority of God’s Word.

Paul continues by telling believers to put on “the breastplate of righteousness” (Ephesians 6:14). Our standing before God is never based upon our ability to make ourselves righteous. Our hope is Christ. Paul writes:

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:21

Jesus lived the righteous life we could never live and bore the judgment sinners deserve. Those who repent and believe are justified through faith in Christ, but those who have been declared righteous in Christ are also called to live lives characterized by righteousness. We do not pursue holiness in order to earn salvation; we pursue holiness because God has saved us. Sin should therefore never be treated casually. When believers willingly entertain sin, excuse disobedience, or refuse repentance, they are not living consistently with who they are in Christ.

Paul next writes:

“And, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”

— Ephesians 6:15

The gospel gives believers firm footing. Before Christ, we were not merely imperfect people needing improvement. We were sinners separated from a holy God. Yet through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, those who repent and believe are reconciled to God. Romans 5:1 declares, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Our peace is therefore not ultimately found in peaceful circumstances. Circumstances change. Finances change. Relationships change. Health changes. People disappoint us and plans fail. The gospel, however, does not change. The believer can stand firmly because our relationship with God rests upon the finished work of Jesus Christ rather than the stability of our circumstances.

Paul then tells believers:

“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.”

— Ephesians 6:16

Biblical faith is not positive thinking, nor is it believing strongly enough that our circumstances will eventually turn out exactly as we desire. Faith trusts God. We trust His character, His promises, His wisdom, and His Word even when we cannot understand what He is doing. The enemy’s attacks frequently involve lies and accusations: God has forgotten you. God’s Word cannot be trusted. Disobedience will make you happier. There is no hope. Your circumstances will never change.

Faith answers those lies by returning to what God has actually said. The shield of faith is not confidence in ourselves. It is confidence in God.

Paul continues with “the helmet of salvation” (Ephesians 6:17). Our minds are often where spiritual battles become particularly intense. Accusation, fear, doubt, condemnation, discouragement, and confusion can begin controlling our thinking when we forget what God has accomplished through Christ. The believer must continually remember the reality of salvation. Our salvation began with God, was accomplished through Christ, is secured by God’s grace, and ultimately leads to eternal glory with Him.

This does not mean Christians never struggle with assurance or discouragement. It means those struggles must be answered with Scripture rather than allowed to determine what we believe. Romans 8:1 provides tremendous comfort:

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

— Romans 8:1

Satan may accuse. Our conscience may remind us of past sins. Others may remember who we once were. But for those who are in Christ, condemnation has been removed because Christ bore it.

Paul then identifies “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17). Christians need Scripture. We need more than inspirational quotations, vague spiritual ideas, social media posts, or personal opinions about what God might be saying. We need God’s revealed Word.

Jesus demonstrated this when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness. Again and again, Jesus answered temptation with the words, “It is written.” But using Scripture requires knowing Scripture. A Bible sitting unopened on a shelf does little good. Christians must read it, study it, hear it faithfully preached, meditate upon it, memorize it, and learn to apply it correctly.

God’s Word becomes essential in every area of the battle:

• When temptation comes, we need truth.

• When suffering comes, we need truth.

• When fear comes, we need truth.

• When false teaching comes, we need truth.

• When our own hearts deceive us, we need truth.

• When the world contradicts God, we need truth.

The sword of the Spirit is not our opinion about what God might have said. It is what God has actually said.

Paul does not finish his instruction after describing the armor. He immediately turns to prayer:

“Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.”

— Ephesians 6:18

Prayer is not an optional addition to spiritual warfare. Prayer expresses our dependence upon God. We pray because we recognize that we cannot live the Christian life through our own strength. We need God’s wisdom, endurance, protection from temptation, strength to obey, and grace to remain faithful. Paul also tells believers to persevere in prayer “for all the saints.” The Christian life was never intended to be lived alone. We need the local church, faithful pastors, and brothers and sisters who will pray for us, encourage us, correct us, and continually point us toward Christ.

It is also important to understand that putting on the armor of God is not a superstitious ritual. Sometimes Christians verbally name each piece of armor every morning as though simply saying the words creates spiritual protection. Paul’s teaching goes much deeper than repeating a formula. He is describing a Christian life grounded in the realities God has provided:

• Stand in God’s truth.

• Pursue righteousness.

• Remain grounded in the gospel.

• Trust God by faith.

• Remember the reality of your salvation.

• Know and use God’s Word.

• Persevere in prayer.

• Remain connected to God’s people.

This is not superstition. This is the ordinary Christian life lived in continual dependence upon an extraordinary God.

Perhaps one of the most encouraging parts of Ephesians 6 is what Paul does not tell believers to do. He does not tell us to defeat Satan through our own strength. He does not tell us to become spiritually impressive. He does not tell us to develop enough confidence in ourselves to overcome every difficulty. He repeatedly tells us to stand, and then he tells us exactly where the strength to stand comes from:

“Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.”

— Ephesians 6:10

The Christian life requires vigilance because the spiritual battle is real, but it does not require us to live in fear. Christ has conquered sin and death. Our Savior reigns. His Word remains true. His promises cannot fail, and nothing happens outside the sovereign authority of God.

God has not left His people defenseless. He has given us truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, His Word, prayer, and the fellowship of His people. Therefore, when temptation comes, when lies come, when suffering comes, and when the spiritual battle becomes difficult, we should not look inward for strength.

Put on the whole armor of God, depend upon the strength of the Lord, and stand firm in Christ.

That approach still has value, but it becomes limiting when a business serves hundreds or thousands of potential search markets.

Consider a company that provides the same service throughout the United States. Someone in San Diego may search for the service differently from someone in Dallas, Miami, Nashville, or Charlotte. Multiply those locations by dozens of services and hundreds of relevant search variations, and suddenly a traditional 20-page website cannot adequately represent everything the company offers.

This is where programmatic SEO becomes valuable.

The question is no longer simply:

“Can Google find my website?”

Businesses increasingly need to ask:

“Can search engines and AI systems clearly understand who we are, what we do, where we operate, and why our information is relevant?”

• Encouraging someone without wondering what they can do for you.

Character is often revealed in these quiet places because there is no audience to impress. Those decisions gradually determine what kind of business we are building and what kind of people we are becoming.

For me, this is where my faith in Christ directly shapes how I approach work.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Colossians 3:23

If we work primarily for recognition, we will eventually become discouraged when recognition does not come. If we serve only people who can benefit us, relationships become transactions. Faithful work requires a greater purpose.

People Are More Than Transactions

Modern business language can unintentionally reduce people to numbers. We talk about leads, prospects, conversions, users, accounts, and audiences. Those terms have legitimate purposes, but behind every number is a real person.

That person may have employees depending on them, a family they are providing for, or a business they have spent years building. When someone chooses to work with us, they are trusting us to do what we said we would do.

Technology can help us serve those people more effectively. AI can automate communication, software can organize thousands of contacts, and marketing systems can expand our reach.

Technology → Efficiency → More Capacity → Better Service → Greater Impact

Technology should increase our ability to serve people, not make people less important. No amount of automation can replace integrity.

Success Needs a Larger Definition

Revenue and growth matter. A company that continually loses money will eventually stop serving anyone. Healthy growth can create jobs, provide stability for families, and allow a business to serve more people.

But revenue should not be our only measurement.

A Broader Measure of Success

• Revenue: Is the business financially sustainable?

• Service: Are clients receiving genuine value?

• Integrity: Are commitments being honored?

• People: Are customers, employees, vendors, and partners treated with dignity?

• Family: Is growth coming at the expense of responsibilities at home?

• Impact: Is the work genuinely helping people?

Jesus gave us a different picture of leadership:

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.”

Mark 10:45 (ESV)

For the believer in Christ, leadership is not primarily about having people beneath us. It is about accepting responsibility and looking for opportunities to serve faithfully.

A healthier picture of growth looks like this:

Revenue → Stability → Growth → Greater Capacity → More People Served → Greater Impact

Revenue matters. It simply is not the final destination.

You Do Not Need a Large Audience to Make an Impact

Social media can create the impression that influence begins when an audience becomes large. I do not believe that is true.

If ten people consistently read what you write, ten real people are giving you their time and attention. If one client trusts your company, that trust matters. If one employee depends on your leadership, your decisions can affect an entire household.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to reach more people. Growth can increase our ability to serve, create, employ, give, and contribute. But we should never become so focused on reaching thousands that we stop valuing the people already in front of us.

Impact should not be measured only by how many people we reach, but also by how faithfully we serve the people we reach.

Build Something Worth Building

Build the company. Write the book. Launch the idea. Develop the technology. Increase the revenue and reach more people. Pursue meaningful growth, but build on something stronger than attention and numbers.

Keep your commitments when they become inconvenient. Correct mistakes instead of protecting your image. Serve people who may never advance your career, and remember that people are more than opportunities to generate revenue.

For those who share my faith, our work ultimately belongs to Christ, and that should affect both what we build and how we build it. For those who do not share my beliefs, I still believe the principle is worth considering: meaningful work cannot be measured only by what we accumulate or how many people know our names.

Companies, platforms, audiences, markets, and technology will change. Much of what seems important today may eventually be forgotten, but the way we treated people and the integrity with which we carried out our responsibilities can leave an impact far beyond a quarterly report or social media statistic.

The work still matters when nobody is watching because integrity does not require an audience.

Some of the most meaningful things we build are formed quietly through one decision, one relationship, and one act of faithful service at a time.

Most businesses believe they need more leads.

More website traffic. More social media followers. More Google rankings. More advertising. More people discovering the company.

Sometimes they do.

But after working with businesses on websites, SEO, lead generation, CRM systems, and automation, I have found another problem that is just as important.

Many businesses are already getting attention. They simply do not have a strong system for turning that attention into business.

A potential customer visits the website but does not take action.

Someone submits a form but waits hours for a response.

A prospect calls after business hours and nobody follows up.

An estimate gets sent, but there is no consistent follow-up afterward.

A customer completes a project, but nobody asks for a review, referral, or future business.

The company keeps trying to fill the top of the funnel while opportunities are disappearing further down.

Traffic Is Only the Beginning

A website receiving 5,000 visitors per month is not automatically more valuable than one receiving 1,000.

The real question is what happens after those visitors arrive.

Imagine two businesses.

Business A receives 5,000 monthly visitors but has weak calls to action, no automated follow-up, and no organized CRM process.

Business B receives 2,000 visitors but has clear offers, strong landing pages, immediate follow-up, appointment scheduling, pipeline tracking, and long-term customer communication.

I would rather own Business B.

Traffic creates opportunity.

Systems determine what happens to that opportunity.

That distinction becomes increasingly important as AI changes search.

Businesses are now thinking about traditional SEO, local search, GEO, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, social platforms, paid advertising, and other discovery channels.

Visibility is becoming fragmented across more platforms.

That makes the system behind the visibility even more important.

The Five-Part Business Growth System

I believe businesses should think about digital growth as one connected system rather than a collection of unrelated marketing services.

1. Discovery

Can people find you?

This includes Google, local search, SEO, GEO, AI search engines, social media, referrals, advertising, and other channels.

Without discovery, the rest of the system has nothing to work with.

But discovery alone does not produce revenue.

2. Trust

Once someone finds you, do they believe you can solve their problem?

Your website, reviews, branding, content, case studies, messaging, and online presence all contribute to this decision.

People often research a company across several places before contacting it.

A strong digital presence reduces uncertainty.

3. Conversion

Can the prospect easily take the next step?

This sounds obvious, but many websites make conversion unnecessarily difficult.

The visitor should understand what you do, who you help, why they should choose you, and what they should do next.

Calls, forms, calendars, chat, and other conversion points should make contacting the business simple.

4. Follow-Up

This is where many businesses lose opportunities.

A lead should not disappear because the owner became busy.

A good CRM and automation system can help organize inquiries, trigger appropriate communication, schedule appointments, remind staff to follow up, and keep prospects from being forgotten.

Automation should not replace human relationships.

It should help businesses become more consistent with them.

5. Retention and Referral

The system should not stop when somebody becomes a customer.

Existing customers can become repeat customers, reviewers, advocates, and referral sources.

Businesses spend enormous amounts of money acquiring customers and then often fail to maintain those relationships.

A strong system continues after the sale.

The Numbers Change Quickly

Consider a business generating 100 leads per month.

Suppose 60 receive meaningful follow-up.

Twenty eventually become customers.

If the average customer is worth $2,000, that represents $40,000 in revenue.

Now imagine improving the process without generating a single additional lead.

Instead of reaching 60 leads effectively, the company reaches 90 because its CRM, automation, scheduling, and sales process are better organized.

If the overall conversion rate improves as well, those same 100 leads become substantially more valuable.

That is why I hesitate when someone immediately tells me, “We need more leads.”

Maybe.

But first I want to know what happened to the leads you already had.

Where AI Fits

AI makes this conversation even more important.

Businesses can now produce content faster, analyze information faster, automate communication faster, and build campaigns faster than ever.

But faster does not automatically mean better.

AI cannot compensate for a broken business process.

If your offer is unclear, AI can distribute unclear messaging faster.

If your follow-up process is poor, adding more leads may simply create more missed opportunities.

If your customer experience is weak, automation can make that weakness more efficient.

The goal should not be to add AI everywhere.

The goal should be to identify where technology can remove unnecessary friction while preserving judgment, responsibility, and genuine human interaction.

Audit the System Before Buying More Traffic

Before increasing your advertising budget or investing heavily in another traffic source, examine what happens after someone discovers your business.

Search for your company.

Visit your website from a phone.

Submit your own contact form.

Call your business after hours.

Book an appointment.

Look at how quickly the inquiry enters your CRM.

Review the follow-up sequence.

Check what happens after an estimate is sent.

Then look at what happens 30, 60, and 90 days after someone becomes a customer.

You may discover that your biggest growth opportunity is not getting more people into the system.

It is building a better system for the people already entering it.

Build the Infrastructure First

Marketing becomes much more powerful when discovery, trust, conversion, follow-up, retention, and referrals work together.

Your website should connect to your CRM.

Your SEO should connect to conversion pages.

Your forms should connect to follow-up.

Your customers should connect to review and referral systems.

Your AI tools should support the process rather than become the process.

That is when digital marketing stops feeling like a collection of disconnected expenses and begins functioning like business infrastructure.

More attention can certainly help a company grow.

But before chasing the next thousand visitors, followers, or leads, ask a more important question:

What happens when someone raises their hand today?

The answer may reveal where your next stage of growth actually begins.

The Bible does not ignore these struggles. Scripture speaks to people facing uncertainty, financial pressure, family difficulties, suffering, and fear. God does not promise us a life without trouble, but He does teach us how to respond when those pressures begin to control our thinking.

Godly Concern Is Not the Same as Anxiety

There is a difference between being concerned about something and being consumed by it.

Paul clearly experienced deep concern for other people. Speaking about his burden for the churches, he wrote of “the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches” (2 Corinthians 11:28, ESV). Elsewhere, Paul describes Timothy as someone who would be “genuinely concerned for your welfare” (Philippians 2:20, ESV).

Godly concern recognizes a real problem and moves us toward faithful action. It may lead us to pray, seek counsel, prepare, serve someone, make a difficult decision, or address something that needs attention.

Sinful anxiety takes us somewhere different. Instead of moving us toward faithfulness, it can consume our thinking with circumstances and outcomes that belong to God.

Concern asks, “What is my responsibility?”

Anxiety often asks, “How can I control the outcome?”

Anxiety Often Looks Toward Tomorrow

Jesus addressed anxiety directly in Matthew 6:

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” (Matthew 6:34, ESV).

God gives us responsibilities for today, but anxiety often demands that we solve tomorrow too.

We should plan carefully, work diligently, and seek wisdom. Planning is not the problem. Faithful planning recognizes that we are responsible for our actions while God remains sovereign over the results.

We can prepare for tomorrow without trying to control it.

Take Your Concerns to God

Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6, ESV).

Paul does not simply tell Christians to stop worrying. He tells us where to take our concerns.

When something weighs heavily on us, we should bring it specifically before God. Ask for wisdom. Ask for provision. Ask for strength. Ask for help responding faithfully.

Peter gives similar instruction: “casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7, ESV).

We can give our anxieties to God because we know His character. He cares for His people.

Bring Your Thoughts Back to What Is True

Anxiety can create an entire future that does not exist. Something that could happen begins to feel like something that certainly will happen.

That is why our thinking matters.

After addressing anxiety, Paul tells believers to think about what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable (Philippians 4:8).

Sometimes we need to ask ourselves a simple question: What do I actually know to be true right now?

Not what might happen. Not what someone might do. Not everything that could go wrong.

What is true?

Then we bring our thoughts back under the authority of God’s Word.

Our Hope Is in Christ

Our hope cannot depend upon getting the outcome we want.

Sometimes circumstances improve quickly. Sometimes they do not. Sometimes God removes the source of our stress, and sometimes He gives us grace to remain faithful through it.

Our confidence rests in Christ.

The greatest problem we have ever faced was our sin before a holy God. Christ dealt with that problem at the cross. Through His death and resurrection, those who belong to Him have forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and an eternal hope that circumstances cannot take away.

That changes how we face uncertainty.

When concern arises, ask what faithfulness requires today. Pray about what you cannot control. Take responsible action where you can. Seek biblical counsel when you need it. Then entrust the outcome to God.

Godly concern can move us toward prayer and faithful action.

Anxiety tries to make us carry what belongs to God.

We do not have to carry tomorrow today.

God is already there.

As a business owner, I see tremendous value in that. I use AI regularly and believe we are still at the beginning of what this technology will allow us to do.

But there is a question I keep coming back to:

Just because we can do more, does that mean we are doing better?

More Is Not Always Better

Business constantly pushes us toward more.

More leads. More clients. More content. More revenue. More productivity.

AI makes all of that easier.

But you can have more clients and provide worse service. You can generate more leads and have fewer meaningful conversations. You can publish more content without saying anything valuable.

Efficiency matters, but it cannot be our only measurement.

AI Does Not Remove Responsibility

If AI helps me write something inaccurate and I publish it without reviewing it, that is still my responsibility.

If I automate part of my business and it creates a poor client experience, I am responsible for the system I created.

AI is a tool. It can increase our capabilities, but it cannot replace judgment, integrity, or accountability.

Some Things Should Remain Human

I believe strongly in AI and automation, but I do not believe everything should be automated.

Some conversations deserve our attention. Some decisions require judgment. Some clients need an actual person.

The goal should not be removing ourselves from everything.

The goal should be using technology to remove unnecessary work so we have more time for what actually matters.

What Will You Do With the Time AI Gives You?

This may be one of the most important questions of the AI era.

If AI saves you ten hours every week, what happens to those hours?

Do you simply fill them with more work?

Or do you spend more time with family, build stronger relationships, serve people better, learn something deeply, rest, or focus on your faith?

My Christian faith shapes how I answer that question, but I think the broader principle applies regardless of what you believe.

Technology changes quickly.

Character, relationships, integrity, and responsibility still matter.

AI can make us faster and more productive.

What it cannot decide is what we should do with that extra capacity.

That part is still up to us.

One of the most common things I hear from business owners who want to grow is simple:

“I need more leads.”

And sometimes they do.

More visibility, stronger SEO, better advertising, and a website that attracts the right people can absolutely create new opportunities. But there is another question worth asking before putting more money into marketing:

What is happening to the leads you already have?

A business can generate plenty of interest and still struggle to turn that interest into revenue.

Someone visits the website and fills out a form, but nobody responds until the next day. A prospect asks for an estimate, receives it, and never hears from the company again. Someone calls while the owner is busy, leaves a message, and gets forgotten. Another prospect says they need a few weeks to think about it, but nobody follows up.

Individually, these may seem like small things. Over the course of a year, they can represent a significant amount of lost business.

More Traffic Doesn’t Solve Every Problem

Imagine doubling the number of leads coming into your business tomorrow.

Would your current process be able to handle them?

If the answer is no, increasing your marketing budget may simply increase the number of opportunities that fall through the cracks.

Before focusing entirely on generating more traffic, examine the process that begins once someone expresses interest.

How quickly does your business respond?

Who is responsible for following up?

How many follow-up attempts are made?

Are leads being tracked in one place?

Can you easily see which prospects are new, which have received estimates, which need follow-up, and which became customers?

These are basic questions, but they reveal a lot about how prepared a business is for growth.

Follow-Up Matters More Than Most Businesses Realize

Not every prospect is ready to make a decision immediately.

Someone may contact you today and buy next week. Another person may need several conversations before moving forward. Some prospects simply get busy and forget to respond.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t interested.

This is where having a consistent follow-up process becomes important.

A CRM can help organize opportunities. Automation can send confirmations, reminders, and appropriate follow-up messages. Your team can see where each prospect stands instead of trying to remember everything.

But automation should support relationships, not replace them.

Technology can help you remain consistent. People still need to build trust.

Look at the Entire Customer Journey

Marketing should not end when someone fills out a form.

That is where the next part of the process begins.

A strong business system connects the website, lead generation, CRM, communication, follow-up, sales process, and customer experience.

When those pieces work together, additional marketing becomes much more valuable because the business is prepared to handle the opportunities being created.

Before asking, “How can we get more leads?” consider asking a different question:

“Are we doing everything we can with the leads we already have?”

You may still need more leads.

But you might discover that one of your best opportunities for growth is already sitting inside your business.

Sometimes growth isn’t about doing more marketing.

It’s about building a better process for the opportunities you already have.

When my wife and I started Transformed Design in 2009, I could not have known everything the next 17 years would bring. Like many business owners, much of my early attention was focused on what was directly in front of me: finding clients, completing projects, generating revenue, solving problems, and figuring out how to keep moving forward.

Over time, however, business has a way of changing the questions you ask.

At first, the question may be, “How do we make this work?” Later it becomes, “How do we make this grow?” Eventually, if you stay in business long enough, an even more important question emerges:

“What exactly are we building, and what is it ultimately for?”

That question has changed the way I think about growth.

Growth Cannot Depend Entirely on You

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that working harder and building a stronger business are not necessarily the same thing.

There is a stage when working longer hours can produce more revenue. You take another project, answer another email, make another sales call, and solve another client problem. But eventually you reach the limitations of your own time.

That is when systems become important.

Recurring revenue, documented processes, automation, technology, and dependable people can turn a business from something you constantly have to push forward into something capable of operating more efficiently.

If the owner has to personally touch everything, the owner eventually becomes the limitation of the business.

This has influenced how I think about the companies and platforms we are building today. I am increasingly interested in creating assets, systems, and recurring value rather than simply finding more work to do.

That distinction took me years to fully appreciate.

The way we work may change.

But biblical truth does not change.

That intersection between an unchanging biblical foundation and a rapidly changing world is something I want to explore much more deeply.

Business, AI, and Technology

We are living through an extraordinary period of technological change.

Artificial intelligence and automation are transforming how businesses operate, how people communicate, how companies market themselves, how entrepreneurs build, and how quickly an idea can become something real.

I work with technology regularly, and I believe there are tremendous opportunities ahead.

But I also believe we need to ask questions beyond what technology is capable of doing.

Should we use it?

How should we use it?

What responsibilities come with it?

How can technology serve people rather than allowing people to become servants of technology?

How do business owners embrace innovation without allowing efficiency, money, or growth to become the ultimate objective?

These are conversations I believe are worth having.

There is something interesting about going back and watching your first podcast interview after you have appeared on more than 20 of them.

My first podcast guest appearance was on Renee Speaks, where I joined Renee for an episode titled Brand. Build. Scale. Our conversation centered on subjects that have been a major part of my professional life: building businesses, generating qualified leads, improving search visibility, developing websites, adopting new technology, and understanding the growing role of artificial intelligence.

At the time, I wasn’t thinking about beginning a series of podcast appearances or where that first interview might lead. I was simply grateful for the opportunity to share some of what I had learned through years of building a business, working with clients, and watching digital technology reshape how companies attract customers and grow.

Since that first appearance, I have been a guest on more than 20 other podcasts. Looking back, Brand. Build. Scale. was a fitting place for those conversations to begin.

Brand: It Starts With How People See Your Business

When people hear the word branding, they often think about a logo, colors, typography, or a company’s visual identity. Those things matter, but branding goes much deeper.

Your brand is the impression someone develops when they encounter your company. Your website, messaging, reputation, reviews, search presence, content, customer experience, and even how quickly you respond to an inquiry all contribute to that impression.

Today, that first encounter often happens online. Someone may discover your business through Google, social media, an online directory, a referral, a podcast, or increasingly through an AI-powered platform. Before they ever speak with you, they are already deciding whether they understand what you do and whether they trust you enough to take the next step.

That is why I have always believed good branding has to be connected to the larger business strategy. A beautiful logo cannot compensate for confusing messaging, and a polished website will accomplish very little if potential customers cannot find it or if it fails to turn their attention into an opportunity.

A strong brand gives your marketing and lead generation something solid to build upon.

Build: Your Website Should Be Working for the Business

I have worked in web design and digital marketing for many years, and the role of the business website has changed considerably during that time.

There was a period when simply having a professional website could separate a company from its competitors. That is no longer enough.

A modern business website needs to communicate clearly, establish credibility, answer questions, support search visibility, generate leads, and give visitors an obvious next step. It also needs to connect with the systems operating behind the scenes.

“A website shouldn’t be an isolated marketing asset. It should be part of the lead generation system that helps the business grow.”

Think about what happens when someone visits a website and submits a form.

Where does that information go? How quickly does someone respond? Is the lead automatically entered into a CRM? Does the prospect receive an immediate confirmation? Is the appropriate person notified? What happens if nobody reaches the prospect on the first attempt?

The answers to those questions can make the difference between a website that simply receives traffic and a website that consistently contributes to new business.

This is one of the reasons my work has expanded beyond building websites. Websites, SEO, lead generation, CRM systems, automation, content, analytics, and AI increasingly need to work together.

The website is an important piece, but it is part of a much larger lead generation and customer acquisition system.

Lead Generation: Traffic Is Only the Beginning

Lead generation deserves its own place in the conversation because growth becomes difficult without a consistent way to create new opportunities.

Business owners understandably want more website traffic, more visibility, and better rankings. Those are valuable objectives, but traffic alone is not the goal.

You need the right people finding your business and taking action.

A company could attract thousands of visitors every month and still struggle if those visitors have little intention of becoming customers. Another business could receive considerably less traffic and produce excellent results because the people reaching the website are actively searching for the services it provides.

That is why I look at lead generation as an ecosystem rather than a single marketing tactic.

SEO can bring someone to the website. Strong messaging can help them understand the offer. Good design can establish credibility. A clear call to action can encourage them to make contact. A CRM can capture and organize the opportunity. Automation can provide an immediate response, and a good sales process can move that relationship forward.

Every piece matters.

“Generating a lead is only the beginning. The real opportunity is created by what the business does next.”

This is an area where I see businesses leave significant opportunities on the table. They may invest heavily in advertising, SEO, social media, or another source of leads while giving much less attention to what happens after someone raises their hand.

A lead that sits unanswered for hours or days is very different from one that receives an immediate and helpful response.

Businesses should not only ask, “How do we get more leads?”

They should also ask, “What happens when we get one?”

That second question is where CRM technology, automation, AI, and a defined follow-up process can have an enormous impact.

SEO Is Evolving

SEO has changed considerably throughout my career, and we are now entering another major period of change.

Google remains incredibly important, but people no longer discover businesses through one search engine alone. They use Google Maps, social media, YouTube, online communities, review platforms, directories, and increasingly AI tools to research products, services, companies, and solutions.

AI is expanding that landscape even further.

People can now have a conversation with an AI platform and ask increasingly specific questions about what they need. Instead of typing a few keywords into a traditional search engine, they can describe a problem, provide context, ask follow-up questions, and narrow their options through a conversation.

That does not mean SEO is disappearing.

“Search isn’t disappearing because of AI. The places where people search are expanding.”

For businesses, this creates additional lead generation opportunities, but only if they are discoverable.

Your website needs to clearly communicate who you are, what you do, where you operate, who you serve, and what expertise you possess. Search engines need to understand that information, and increasingly, AI systems need enough reliable information about your business and its digital footprint to understand when you may be relevant.

The terminology will continue to change, but the objective remains remarkably consistent: when someone is looking for what your company provides, you want your business to have an opportunity to be discovered.

SEO ultimately needs to connect visibility with business results. Rankings and traffic are useful measurements, but qualified inquiries, conversations, appointments, and customers are what allow a business to grow.

Where AI Fits Into Lead Generation

Artificial intelligence has quickly become one of the biggest conversations in technology and business.

There is tremendous opportunity here, but there is also a tremendous amount of noise.

New AI products appear constantly. Every week seems to bring another platform promising to transform marketing, sales, customer service, content creation, productivity, or business operations.

I don’t believe the answer is for businesses to adopt every new AI tool. The better approach is to start with an actual business problem.

Where are you losing leads? How quickly are new inquiries receiving a response? Which prospects are most qualified? Which repetitive processes consume employee time? Where are potential customers dropping out of the process? What information does your sales team repeatedly have to find or recreate?

Once you understand the problem, you can determine whether AI or automation provides a better solution.

“The goal isn’t to put AI everywhere. The goal is to use technology where it genuinely improves the customer journey and the business behind it.”

AI and automation can help businesses respond more quickly, organize information, assist with lead qualification, personalize communication, maintain follow-up, analyze data, and reduce repetitive administrative work.

But technology should support relationships rather than eliminate them.

A prospective customer is still a person trying to solve a problem. The technology behind the process should make it easier for that person to get the information and help they need.

Scale: Technology Should Support Growth

Scaling is often misunderstood as simply getting bigger.

More customers, more employees, more revenue, or more locations can certainly be results of growth, but true scalability requires something deeper. A company needs systems capable of handling increased demand without requiring the owner to personally manage every process.

A reliable lead generation system is part of that foundation.

If a business only generates new customers when the owner personally networks, makes calls, or follows up with every prospect, growth eventually reaches a limit. The same problem occurs when leads are generated consistently but the company does not have the infrastructure to manage them effectively.

This is where technology becomes especially valuable.

CRM systems, automation, AI, search marketing, content, analytics, and other technologies can help create a more predictable path from initial discovery to becoming a customer.

However, automating a broken process usually creates a faster broken process.

That is why the order matters.

Brand. Build. Scale.

Establish a clear foundation. Build the systems that create and manage opportunities. Then use technology to expand what is already working.

What More Than 20 Podcast Appearances Have Taught Me

When I appeared on Renee Speaks, I had no idea that more than 20 additional podcast guest appearances would follow.

One of the things I have appreciated most about these conversations is how different hosts approach business from different perspectives. One host may want to spend more time discussing AI, while another is interested in entrepreneurship, websites, marketing, lead generation, SEO, or what I have learned from building a company over many years.

Those conversations have made me think more deeply about lessons that can become almost automatic after years in business. When you have experienced something repeatedly, you may understand it through experience without regularly stopping to explain why it works.

A good interviewer makes you explain it.

That process has reinforced my belief that business owners need practical conversations about technology and growth. They don’t need another person telling them that one new AI tool is going to completely transform their company overnight.

They need to understand how to become more discoverable, generate qualified opportunities, convert those opportunities into relationships, follow up effectively, and use technology to build systems that support growth.

Those are the conversations I have enjoyed having.

Looking Back at My First Podcast

Going back to Renee Speaks now carries a different perspective because I know what happened afterward.

It was podcast number one.

More than 20 other appearances followed, and I expect there will be many more conversations ahead as business and technology continue to evolve.

I am grateful to Renee for inviting me onto the show and giving me that first opportunity to sit down and talk about the work I had spent years doing.

The technology we discussed continues to change rapidly. AI is becoming more capable. Search is evolving. Websites are becoming more sophisticated. Lead generation is becoming increasingly connected to automation and data, and the line between marketing, technology, sales, and operations continues to become less defined.

Yet the title of that first episode still holds up.

“Build a brand people can understand and trust. Create a system that turns visibility into qualified opportunities. Then use technology intelligently to scale what works.”

The tools will change, but businesses will continue facing the same fundamental challenge: reaching the right people, earning their trust, creating opportunities, serving customers well, and building systems capable of supporting growth.

That is what Brand. Build. Scale. means to me today.

One of the things business teaches you quickly is how to evaluate opportunities. You learn to look at the numbers, consider the upside and downside, think about the people involved, and determine whether an opportunity moves the business in the right direction.

After doing this long enough, some of those decisions become almost instinctive. But after more than 17 years in business, I’ve realized there is another layer to certain decisions that doesn’t fit neatly into a spreadsheet.

Sometimes a business decision becomes a spiritual decision.

I’ve been thinking about this recently because of a conversation about business partnerships. The question was essentially this: Should a Christian enter into a business partnership with someone who doesn’t share their faith?

It sounds like a straightforward question, but I don’t think it is.

There is a significant difference between serving someone who doesn’t share your beliefs and legally joining yourself to that person in the ownership and direction of a company. I have no problem doing business with people who believe differently than I do. Christians shouldn’t isolate themselves from the world. We should serve people well, treat them honestly, keep our word, build relationships, and faithfully represent Christ before the people God places in our path.

Shared ownership, however, is different.

When Values Become Decisions

When you own a company with someone, you aren’t simply working alongside them. You may be sharing finances, employees, liability, reputation, authority, and responsibility for decisions that could affect many other people.

Almost any partnership can look good when things are going well. Revenue is growing, customers are happy, everyone is getting paid, and the vision feels exciting. Difficult seasons, however, tend to reveal things that successful seasons can hide.

What happens when the company starts losing money? What happens when keeping your word costs the business revenue? What happens when one partner believes a particular decision crosses an ethical line while the other sees it as ordinary business?

Those aren’t merely hypothetical questions when you own a company together.

Eventually, values become decisions, and decisions have consequences.

That is why I think we need to look beyond whether someone is talented, successful, connected, or capable of helping a company grow. Those things matter, but so do character, convictions, judgment, and the direction in which a relationship could eventually pull us.

A Contract Cannot Replace Wisdom

Someone made an important point during the conversation: if you’re going into business with another person, you need a strong contract.

I agree.

Responsibilities should be defined. Ownership should be clear. Expectations should be documented. There should be provisions for disagreements, finances, exits, and what happens when circumstances change.

But I also think we can expect a contract to do something it was never designed to do.

A contract can establish what happens when a partnership goes wrong. It cannot tell you whether entering the partnership was wise in the first place.

That requires discernment.

For a Christian, discernment involves more than determining which arrangement creates the greatest financial return. We also have to consider whether a decision allows us to remain faithful to God and the convictions He has given us through His Word.

That can make entrepreneurship uncomfortable because sometimes the most profitable opportunity isn’t necessarily the wisest one.

Not Every Open Door Requires a Yes

Entrepreneurs tend to love opportunity. I know I do. When I see something with potential, my mind naturally begins thinking about what it could become, how it could be improved, and what it might look like several years from now.

That kind of thinking has served me well in business. But it can also create a temptation to assume that every promising opportunity deserves a yes.

Sometimes wisdom means moving forward with confidence. Other times, it means waiting until there is greater clarity or walking away altogether. Learning the difference requires more than entrepreneurial instinct; it requires patience, discernment, prayer, and a willingness to accept that not every opportunity is meant for us.

Proverbs 3:5–6 says:

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

I’ve read those verses many times, but the phrase “in all your ways” has significant implications for business. It includes contracts, partnerships, investments, hiring decisions, money, growth, and the opportunities sitting in front of us that seem almost too good to turn down.

When Doing the Right Thing Costs Something

One reason these decisions become difficult is that faithfulness can sometimes appear expensive.

Walking away from the wrong opportunity may mean walking away from revenue. Choosing not to enter a partnership may mean growing more slowly. Keeping your word can cost money, and treating people properly will not always produce the highest short-term profit.

That is where our definition of success gets tested.

Jesus asked:

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” — Matthew 16:26

Most of us aren’t confronted with a single dramatic decision between gaining the entire world and losing our souls. The choices are usually smaller and accumulate over time. One compromise makes the next compromise easier. One justification makes another easier to accept.

That is why revenue cannot be the highest measurement of whether a business decision was good.

Ambition Is Not the Enemy

None of this means Christians should be afraid of business or suspicious of growth.

I still want to grow, build, create opportunities, use technology well, make good investments, and increase the reach of my business. I want to provide well for my family and become increasingly generous with what God provides. There is nothing inherently wrong with those ambitions.

The more important question is what governs them.

For years, one of the first questions I naturally asked when evaluating an opportunity was, “Will this work?” That remains an important question. Business requires strategy, planning, research, numbers, hard work, and good judgment.

But I’m learning that it shouldn’t always be the first question.

The question that needs to come before it is:

Can I faithfully honor Christ if I move forward with this?

If the answer is no, then the opportunity costs too much. If the answer is yes, I can evaluate the numbers, seek counsel, negotiate carefully, make a plan, work diligently, and move forward while trusting God with the outcome.

After more than 17 years of building a business, I’m increasingly convinced that success isn’t simply about making every opportunity work. Sometimes success means having enough wisdom to recognize the opportunities you were never supposed to take.

And sometimes the best business decision is the one that protects what matters more than the business itself.

After more than 17 years in business, I’ve become increasingly convinced that some of the best opportunities don’t begin with selling anything.

They begin with a conversation.

You meet another business owner, learn what they do, understand who they serve, and begin thinking about how you might be able to help them. Sometimes that turns into a client. Other times it becomes a referral, partnership, introduction, or simply a relationship worth maintaining.

Early in business, it’s easy to look at every new connection through the question, “Could this person become a customer?”

I think there’s a better question:

“How could I help this person?”

That change in perspective has become increasingly important to how I approach business.

Relationships Compound Over Time

A website can generate leads. SEO can improve visibility. AI and automation can make a company more efficient. Marketing can put your business in front of thousands of people.

I believe in all of those things. They’re a major part of what we do at Transformed Design.

But technology doesn’t replace relationships.

Some of the people you meet today may not need anything from you for years. They may never become clients at all. But they might introduce you to someone who does. You might also have exactly the connection they need six months from now.

That’s why I’ve been intentionally spending more time connecting with other business owners and learning about their businesses without immediately trying to sell them something.

Play the Long Game

Business owners naturally need revenue, leads, and new customers. There’s nothing wrong with pursuing those things.

But when every conversation becomes a transaction, we can miss something much more valuable.

Trust takes time.

Reputation takes time.

Strong partnerships take time.

And some of the relationships that appear insignificant today may become incredibly important years from now.

My approach has become simple: serve people well, make introductions when I can, stay connected, and allow business opportunities to develop naturally.

Not every relationship needs an immediate return.

Sometimes the relationship itself is the beginning of the opportunity.

As a Christian, I have to look at business through a different lens. I don’t believe the purpose of my work is simply to make as much money as possible or build the largest company possible. I believe God has given me certain abilities, opportunities, relationships, and resources, and I have a responsibility to use them well.

That has become increasingly important to me as the years have gone by.

Business Is More Than Revenue

There is nothing wrong with wanting a profitable business. A healthy business provides for families, employs people, supports other businesses, creates opportunities, and allows us to be generous. Profit is necessary if a business is going to survive and continue serving people.

The problem comes when revenue becomes the only measurement that matters.

There have been plenty of times throughout my career when I’ve had to make decisions that involved more than simply asking which option would make the most money. Sometimes the better decision is the one that protects a relationship, keeps a commitment, helps a client, or simply allows you to know that you handled a situation with integrity.

Those decisions may not always produce an immediate financial return, but they shape the kind of business you are building.

I want people who work with me to know that I value the relationship beyond the transaction. I want clients to know that when I tell them I’m going to do something, I intend to follow through. When something doesn’t go according to plan, I want to communicate rather than disappear. Those principles are not complicated, but after many years in business, I’ve seen how much they matter.

Faith Should Affect the Way We Work

It is easy to say that faith is important to us. The more difficult question is whether our faith actually changes the way we conduct ourselves Monday through Friday.

For me, Christianity and business cannot exist in completely separate categories. My faith should influence how I treat a client, how I communicate, how I handle money, how I respond when someone is difficult to work with, and how I make decisions when nobody else would know the difference.

That does not mean I get everything right. I certainly don’t. Running a business gives you plenty of opportunities to see your own weaknesses and recognize areas where you still need to grow.

It does mean that I have a standard outside of myself.

If I believe my work ultimately belongs to the Lord, then the way I conduct that work matters.

Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” I’ve come back to that principle many times because it puts work in its proper place. I want to do excellent work for my clients, but ultimately my responsibility goes beyond pleasing a client or growing a company.

The Tools Change, but People Still Matter

When I started in this industry, the digital world looked very different from what it does today. Websites have changed dramatically. Search engines have changed. Social media became a major part of business. CRM platforms became more accessible to smaller companies, and now AI is changing almost every part of how businesses market, communicate, and operate.

I’ve had to continue learning throughout all of those changes, and I expect that will continue for as long as I’m in business.

Today, much of my work involves websites, branding, SEO, lead generation, CRM systems, digital marketing, and AI automation. I enjoy the technology and I’m excited about where it is going, but one thing has remained remarkably consistent: businesses are still built around people.

A company can have an impressive website and sophisticated automation, but if it treats people poorly, technology will not fix that. You can generate hundreds of leads, but if nobody follows up with them or cares about solving their problems, those leads will not mean much.

Good systems should help us serve people better. They should make communication easier, reduce things falling through the cracks, and give business owners more time to focus on the work and relationships that actually need their attention.

That is how I prefer to think about technology. It is incredibly useful, but it is still a tool.

Business Can Take Everything You Give It

One of the realities of entrepreneurship is that the work is never completely finished. There is always another email to answer, another project to work on, another lead to follow up with, another idea to explore, or another problem that needs attention.

If you allow it, business will consume every available hour.

That is why I’ve become increasingly aware of the importance of keeping business in its proper place. I am a husband and father in addition to being a business owner, and those responsibilities matter far more than another hour spent at a computer.

There will always be another opportunity to make money. There will not always be another opportunity to have dinner with your family, spend time with your children, be present for someone who needs you, or simply step away from work and enjoy the people God has placed in your life.

I don’t always balance those things perfectly, and I doubt many entrepreneurs do. But I think it is something worth regularly examining.

I want to build a successful business without allowing the business to become the definition of a successful life.

What Does Success Actually Look Like?

After more than 17 years, I still care about growing my company. I still set goals. I still want more clients, better systems, greater efficiency, and new opportunities. I don’t believe Christians need to apologize for wanting to build successful businesses.

But I also think we need a broader definition of success.

At the end of the day, I want to know that I provided for my family, treated people fairly, created useful things, helped businesses grow, gave others opportunities, and remained faithful to what I believe.

Revenue can tell me how the business performed financially. It cannot tell me whether I was a good husband, father, friend, business owner, or follower of Christ.

Those measurements require a different kind of evaluation.

Why I’m Writing Here

That is part of what I want this Substack to be about.

I’ll certainly write about business. After spending most of my adult life as an entrepreneur, there is a lot I want to share about websites, branding, SEO, marketing, lead generation, CRM systems, AI, automation, client relationships, and what I’ve learned from building a company over a long period of time.

But I don’t want to write about those subjects as though business exists in isolation from the rest of life.

I want to write about what happens when business intersects with faith, family, responsibility, failure, opportunity, technology, and the decisions we make along the way. I want to share things that have worked, things I would do differently, and things I am still figuring out.

I’m not writing from the perspective of someone who has reached the finish line. I’m still running a business, learning new technology, working with clients, pursuing opportunities, making mistakes, and thinking about what the next several years should look like.

Maybe that is what makes this worth writing.

There are plenty of places to read about how to make more money, generate more leads, or use the newest technology. Those topics have their place, and I’ll discuss many of them here. But I also want to keep asking a more important question along the way:

What are we building, and who are we becoming while we build it?

For me, the answer has to begin with Christ.

If the business grows, I want to steward that growth well. If opportunities increase, I want to use them wisely. If challenges come, I want to respond faithfully. And through all of it, I want to remember that the business is something I do, but it is not ultimately who I am.

That perspective has taken years to develop, and I’m sure I’ll continue learning what it means.

That’s what I hope to share here.

But one thing has remained remarkably consistent:

Sustainable business growth is built over time.

Why I’m Writing Here

I created this Substack to share practical lessons from what I am seeing and experiencing as a business owner.

My work today includes website design, branding, SEO, AI-powered lead generation, CRM automation, digital marketing, and helping businesses put better systems in place.

I am also spending more time building referral relationships with other business owners and professionals. I believe there is tremendous value in businesses working together rather than trying to provide every possible service themselves.

What I’ll Be Sharing

I plan to write about business growth, entrepreneurship, AI, websites, SEO, lead generation, automation, marketing, referral partnerships, and the lessons that come from actually running a business.

Some posts will cover strategies we are currently implementing.

Others will cover things I have learned from successes and mistakes over the years.

I will also share my perspective on emerging technology and how small and midsize businesses can use it without losing sight of the fundamentals that make a business successful.

Technology will continue changing.

The tools will continue changing.

But businesses will still need to earn trust, provide value, communicate clearly, develop relationships, and serve their customers well.

That is what I want this publication to be about.
