Three days earlier, Donald Trump threatened Canada with tariffs in retaliation for wildfire smoke drifting across the border.

Another deadline. Another tariff threat. This time, apparently, the problem is the smoke.

The timing felt almost too precise. Canada opened a bridge, and the American president answered with another threat.

But Canada is not the country choking on what now hangs over this relationship. The smoke America is choking on is coming from the bridges it keeps burning.

For almost a century, the Ambassador Bridge has carried people, families, workers and trade across the Detroit River. Now a new bridge has opened beside it, built to connect these countries for generations to come.

They keep treating this as if the story ends with a better deal.

As if the right signature, the right election, the right apology, the right president, the right press conference, or the right tone shift will eventually make the old relationship available again.

It will not.

That is the part they keep missing.

This is not a rom-com where the reckless ex realizes what he lost, shows up at the door, says the right thing, and gets the girl back just in time for the credits.

Canada is not waiting in the background of America’s redemption arc. We are not responsible for making sure your story gets a happy ending.

And honestly, that is the part that seems to be causing the most confusion.

For a very long time, America got used to being the main character in everyone else’s strategic imagination.

Your market. Your military. Your currency. Your culture. Your elections. Your drama. Your instability. Your moods…

What a year.

For the past year and a half, I have been writing from inside a moment I knew was historic before it had settled into hindsight. The tariffs were the headline. The CUSMA review is the calendar event. The “51st state” comments became the insult people could point to.

But underneath all of that was something deeper.

A month out from Canada Day and the CUSMA review, one of the biggest political stories in America is the possibility of a UFC event on the White House lawn.

I don’t say that as criticism. Honestly, it’s kind of perfect.

Because it captures something I’ve been trying to explain for the last year and a half.

The difference isn’t that Canadians and Americans care about different things. We often care about many of the same things. The difference is that we sometimes approach them from very different places.

One side tends to see confidence through visibility, performance, and projecting strength. The other has traditionally placed a little more emphasis on preparation, competence, and quietly doing the work before anyone is paying attention.

Not always. Not everyone. But often enough that you start to notice it.

It’s why the hockey goalie analogy has stuck with me throughout this entire period.

The Goalie

Nobody pays much attention to the goalie all week. The cameras aren’t following them around, they’re not generating headlines, and half the time they’re barely visible until the game starts.

Then the puck drops.

A shot comes in. And somehow they’re exactly where they need to be.

To the audience it looks instinctive.

The save didn’t happen in that moment. It happened through hours of preparation nobody saw, until eventually the audience mistakes preparation for instinct.

That’s part of why I’ve found the reaction to Mark Carney so interesting.

Not because Canadians think he’s perfect. We don’t.

But because so many Americans seem surprised by him.

And every time I see that surprise, I find myself asking the same question.

Why?

This wasn’t some unknown figure who appeared out of nowhere. Carney spent decades in some of the most influential rooms in the world, hearing what people say when they assume you’re one of them.

His résumé wasn’t hidden. His capabilities weren’t hidden. His worldview wasn’t hidden.

Yet there seems to be this recurring moment where Americans encounter someone exceptionally capable, discover they’re Canadian, and react as though those two facts are somehow unexpected together.

We’ve seen versions of this our entire lives. Americans discover Ryan Gosling is Canadian and react as though exceptional and Canadian are somehow surprising together.

Canadians know, and we point it out when we can. 😂😉☺️

The funny part is that Americans are often surprised to learn they're Canadian, even when the qualities they admire most might be part of the reason they are. There’s often a certain temperament underneath the performance. A self-awareness. A dry humour. A comfort with not being the centre of attention. An ability to move through different environments without needing everyone to know exactly how important they are.

It’s difficult to define, but once you’ve spent your life around it, you recognize it almost instantly.

And that’s where I think some of the misunderstanding begins.

Why Americans Keep Being Surprised

Many Americans understand Canada as a smaller, colder, version of America. Canadians generally don’t see ourselves that way.

Influence isn’t identity, and proximity isn’t sameness.

The irony is that Canadians probably spend far more time studying America than Americans spend studying Canada, not because we’re obsessed, but because geography, economics, and media make it practical.

Our largest trading partner, closest ally, and biggest cultural influence sits directly across the border.

Which means many Canadians grow up with a surprisingly detailed understanding of American politics, culture, media, and psychology.

The reverse is often not true.

Superpowers rarely need to spend much time studying smaller countries. The attention mostly flows in one direction.

For decades that imbalance didn’t matter very much.

Then the relationship got tested.

And that’s when things became interesting.

Reaction vs. Realization

One of the biggest misconceptions about the #ElbowsUp response was the belief that Canadians were reacting to a political event or trade policy.

I always suspected it would unfold as something much larger than a trade dispute—a genuine tale of two nations.

The politics mattered. The tariffs mattered. The rhetoric mattered.

What fascinated me was how quickly Canadians moved.

Before governments. Before corporations. Before institutions.

Millions of Canadians quietly began changing travel plans, purchasing habits, and long-held assumptions. Not because someone told them to, but because many people reached the same conclusion at roughly the same time.

And that conclusion wasn’t about trade policy. It was about trust.

That’s why I think so many Americans misread what was happening. They saw a reaction. Canadians experienced a realization. Those are not the same thing.

A reaction is temporary. A realization tends to stick.

The 51st State comments didn’t create the cracks in the relationship. They revealed them.

Or perhaps more accurately, they revealed that many Canadians had already noticed them.

The comments simply made them impossible to ignore.

The Canada Arriving at the Table

That’s why the satisfaction many Canadians feel heading toward the CUSMA review isn’t really about winning.

It’s not (all) about revenge.

It’s about recognition.

For years Canadians were told, directly or indirectly, that we needed America more than America needed us. That our economic future would always depend on remaining tightly integrated into a single relationship.

And what we’ve discovered over the last eighteen months is that alternatives existed.

Not enough of them, but more than people assumed.

Trade missions expanded. Partnerships expanded. Infrastructure projects that had been quietly developing for years suddenly took on new significance.

Which brings me back to the goalie.

Because what looks sudden is often years in the making.

People notice the save, the speech, or the agreement. They rarely notice the years of preparation that made them possible.

And that’s where I think Mark Carney represents something larger than himself.

The competent person who doesn’t need to announce their competence. The person who spends more time preparing than performing. The person who can sit quietly in the room while everyone else underestimates them, then deliver when it matters.

That’s a personality type Canadians understand instinctively. It’s also why I suspect many Canadians weren’t particularly surprised by his New York speech.

Americans seemed fascinated by what they were hearing. Canadians were hearing echoes of conversations we’ve been having for quite a while.

Build resilience. Create options. Reduce vulnerabilities.

The language may evolve, but the underlying message has been remarkably consistent.

Which is why the current moment feels less like a dramatic shift and more like a reveal.

The Canada showing up today isn’t new. What’s changing is that more people are finally paying attention. And maybe that’s why I’ve found this entire period so fascinating. Because it has exposed how much of every relationship depends on the stories we tell ourselves about the other person.

For a very long time, Americans and Canadians have been telling themselves different stories about the same relationship.

Most of the time that difference didn’t matter. Now it does.

Which brings me back to the octagon on the White House lawn.

Maybe that’s why the image made me laugh. Because it perfectly captures the difference between preparing for the fight and preparing for the meeting.

The Canada arriving at the CUSMA review isn’t new.

It’s the Canada that was quietly getting ready while everyone else was watching the pre-game show.

15-year-old comedy bits don’t always age well…but I suppose that all depends on what you found funny, when it was always just mean.

I’ve been sitting with a small detail all week.

Not the punchline. The throwaway line.

The idea that Canadians don’t move if we can help it. That we’d rather stand there, let the world pass, and slip away quietly once no one’s looking.

It’s funny because, at the time, it lands close enough to feel true.

And like most things that feel true, it only holds right up until it doesn’t.

I came across a short piece of news today, that most people would scroll past without thinking twice. Canada invited to a European political summit next month.

Nothing dramatic in the headline. No breaking tone. No urgency.

But it stuck with me.

Not for what it said outright. For what it quietly assumed.

It treated Canada as a participant.

Not an extension. Not a proxy. Not a supporting character in someone else’s strategy.

A country in the room on its own terms.

That sounds obvious on paper. It seems ‘normal’ today.

It doesn’t feel obvious if you’ve grown up close enough to the border to see how often that assumption has been blurred.

I grew up in the out-skirts of Windsor, Ontario.

You don’t get the luxury of abstraction here. The U.S. isn’t an idea. It’s across the water. It’s on your TV. It’s in your shopping habits, your language, your references.

You grow up inside two systems at once.

And for a long time, it creates this low-level assumption that the differences are mostly aesthetic. Same structure, different tone. Same direction, different personality.

That assumption held for a while. It was convenient.

It just wasn’t accurate. And I’ve been studying it for over 20 years.

What we lived through over the past year cracked that illusion in a way that’s hard to unsee once it settles.

From the outside, it looked like a trade dispute. Tariffs. Policy friction. Political theatre.

From here, it didn’t feel like that.

It felt like a line getting crossed that had less to do with economics and more to do with how the relationship was actually understood on the other side.

There’s a difference between partnership and hierarchy. You can ignore it for years if everything stays smooth. It becomes very obvious the second pressure gets applied.

The reaction of Canadians to the 51st State remarks, changed the course of my life. That was the moment for me where something shifted.

Our neighbors had a plan all along. And we stopped it.

Not loudly. Not all at once. But a collective recognition that spread faster than anyone expected.

The instinct to stay still starts to make more sense. It was our sign in the window.

As it turns out, staying still isn’t always passivity. It’s patience. It’s pattern recognition.

It’s watching closely enough that when you do move, you’re not reacting. You’re choosing.

And that’s the part I think people missed.

Canada didn’t suddenly become something new this year. It remembered something old.

The response wasn’t loud.

It’s not our style.

No spectacle. No chest-beating. No dramatic escalation.

But consistent, unwavering resolve.

It showed up in smaller places.

Shopping patterns shifting. Travel habits changing. Quiet coordination across industries. A kind of alignment that didn’t need constant news attention announcing itself to be effective.

You could feel it if you were paying attention.

The country moved. Just not always in a way that looked like movement from the outside.

#ElbowsUp was never a slogan. It was a National signal.

A recognition point. The moment where enough people see the same thing at the same time and adjust without needing to be told.

And then something else started to emerge behind it.

What happens after the initial push-back? When the world started to see that we didn’t ever intend this to be principled, but practical.

What I didn’t expect was what “gloves off” would actually look like.

I think a lot of us had a version of that in our heads. Something louder. More confrontational. Something that looked like a fight in the way we’ve been taught to recognize one.

Davos changed that for me.

It didn’t feel like escalation. It felt like composure under pressure. An invitation, not a warning. A blueprint, not a threat.

And I remember sitting with that for a few days after, trying to place why it landed the way it did.

It wasn’t just the speech. It was the reaction.

The kind of response you can’t manufacture. You could feel it in how people talked about it. Not just here, but outside of Canada. There was a recognition in it. Something along the lines of: this is different… and it works.

That same feeling showed up again in places you wouldn’t normally connect to policy.

The reception of our athletes at the Games didn’t feel like routine support. It felt like acknowledgment. Like people understood what they were cheering for, even if they couldn’t fully articulate it.

Then came the visits. India. Australia. Japan.

Different regions. Different priorities. Different histories with both Canada and the U.S.

And yet, a similar tone kept surfacing.

Not from podiums. From people.

A kind of quiet alignment that doesn’t need to be coordinated to be real.

That’s when it started to click for me that something had moved beyond a national response.

It was being read, interpreted, and in some cases… adopted.

What’s happened since only sharpens that pattern.

You can see it in how countries are reacting to conflict now. Not just through official statements, but through hesitation, distance, recalibration.

The recent responses to U.S. and Israeli actions in Iran didn’t land the way similar moves might have a few years ago.

There’s more friction. More scrutiny. Less automatic alignment.

That’s not fragmentation for the sake of it.

It’s people reassessing where they stand once the assumptions underneath them stop holding.

The system that expected everyone to stay in place… and is now panicked realizing they don’t have to.

If #ElbowsUp was the moment of contact, it looks like “Clear the Bench” is what followed Davos quicker than I think many realized.

It’s what happens when the assumptions around you stop being reliable.

When alignment shifts. When relationships get re-evaluated. When people who were expected to stay in place start repositioning.

Which brings me back to the European Political Summit next month.

Invitations that wouldn’t have happened before. Conversations opening in new directions. Countries reassessing where trust actually sits versus where it was assumed to sit.

None of this looks dramatic in isolation. But, taken together, to me, it’s Canada for the first time in a very long time being seen as a country truly as it’s own distinctive part of North America.

There’s a tendency, especially in North America, to treat “the West” as a single, unified block.

It makes things easier to talk about. Cleaner narratives. Fewer moving parts.

It breaks down the second you look closely.

Europe doesn’t function as one thing. Asia doesn’t function as one thing. Even within smaller regions, the differences are constant and meaningful.

Canada and the U.S. have been flattened into a single category for a long time. Proximity does that.

From a distance, it’s easy to assume alignment equals similarity.

Living inside it, you feel the gap.

That gap.

That’s always been the work.

I just didn’t have a place to do it properly.

So I built one.

Not as a pivot. More like a container.

A way to take this out of the scroll and into something you can actually sit with.

I’m calling it the True North Translation Lab.

My read on this moment, built from a lifetime of living inside that Canada–U.S. overlap and trying to understand where the differences actually matter.

And right now, they matter more than they have in a very long time.

Different instincts around conflict. Different thresholds for escalation. Different ideas of what strength looks like in practice.

Those differences don’t always matter.

Until they do.

I actually think they matter so much that it changed the course of history.

This is why I’ve been quiet for the last two months.

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past year trying to understand how to explain that gap in a way that’s actually useful.

Two months ago, we cleared the bench.

A year ago, we went #ElbowsUp.

I want to let you in on how long we’d been preparing for a dirty hit.

The way Canadians read tone. The way we respond to pressure. The way trust gets built and lost here versus somewhere else.

None of it is complicated on its own.

Put together, it creates a system that behaves differently than people expect if they’re using a U.S. lens as their default.

That mismatch is where a lot of opportunity sits right now.

At the macro level, you can see it in trade relationships, diplomatic positioning, and how countries are starting to hedge in quiet ways.

At the micro level, it shows up in how people choose what to buy, who to support, and where they place their attention.

Those two layers don’t move separately. They inform each other.

Policy shapes behaviour. Behaviour reinforces policy.

And in moments like this, when assumptions are shifting, the feedback loop tightens.

I don’t think anyone expected Canada to lead anything.

That’s not really the instinct here.

What happened is simpler.

A situation forced clarity. The response held. And now other people are noticing.

Not in a celebratory way. In a practical one.

Who can you trust when things get unstable. Who stays consistent under pressure. Who doesn’t need to escalate to hold a position.

Those questions are getting asked more often.

The answers aren’t theoretical anymore.

Different angles. Different moments. Same underlying thread.

What I’m trying to do now is bring it into a format where it can be walked through, not just written down after the fact.

That’s where the True North Translation Lab comes in.

That juxtaposition is not accidental.

It is illustrative.

Because what the past year has revealed — both about our leadership and about ourselves — is that warmth and strategic depth are not opposites. In fact, they may be inseparable in a country that has always had to think beyond volume and spectacle.

What appears, from the outside, to have happened quickly did not happen quickly at all.

What looks like a sudden pivot was, in truth, a long-constructed alternative.

If you want to understand what Canada has done over the past decade — and especially over the past year — you cannot look only at tariffs, headlines, or speeches. You have to look at infrastructure.

Planes.
Trains.
Automobiles.

You have to look at corridors, ports, procurement contracts, and legal frameworks. You have to look at the quiet work of building optionality in a world that increasingly punishes dependency.

Take trains.

For years, rail expansion linking our coasts more tightly — and extending supply chain capacity toward Mexico — was treated as domestic modernization. But rail is never just domestic. Rail is strategy. It is the ability to move goods without relying on a single chokepoint. It is the ability to redirect flow when volatility enters the system.

The line that runs from our Atlantic ports through central Canada and down toward North American trade routes is not simply about commerce. It is about flexibility. It is about ensuring that if one corridor becomes unstable — politically or economically — there is another path already built.

Take Churchill.

For decades, it was an underutilized northern port. Today, it is increasingly understood for what it represents: Arctic access that is not mediated by someone else’s approval. In a world where the Arctic is becoming more strategically relevant, owning your gateway matters.

That is not reaction.
That is foresight.

Now consider planes.

Defense procurement is not glamorous, and it rarely trends on social media, but it is one of the clearest indicators of long-term alignment. Decisions about fighter jets, Arctic patrol capabilities, and supply chain diversification are not made in response to a single news cycle. They are made based on decades of trust, interoperability, and institutional reliability.

When Europe began accelerating its own defense realignment and fiscal commitments, Canada did not panic. We engaged. We deepened cooperation. We ensured that our procurement decisions were aligned not only with present needs, but with a future in which transatlantic partnerships might matter more, not less.

Air travel itself tells a story. As consumer boycotts and political tensions reshaped tourism flows, Canadian carriers adjusted routes. Travel patterns shifted. These are not emotional gestures; they are signals of economic recalibration.

Again — not loud.
Not theatrical.
But structural.

And then there are automobiles.

Few sectors are more symbolic of North American integration than automotive manufacturing. For decades, supply chains were tightly interwoven. The assumption was permanence.

But permanence requires predictability.

When trade volatility increases, firms do what firms always do: they diversify. Production moves. Redundancies are built. Partnerships expand to include Europe, South Korea, Mexico, and increasingly Asia.

Canada did not dismantle its automotive sector in response to tension. It retained, restructured, and repositioned it. Investments were made not on the assumption of endless stability, but on the recognition that resilience would matter more than proximity.

That is a subtle shift, but it is a profound one.

The bridge matters too.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge was conceived long before recent trade hostilities reached their peak. Its financing structure ensured that Canada would not be held hostage to political obstruction. It was built during a period when many dismissed the more extreme rhetoric emerging south of the border as temporary noise.

But some of us did not dismiss it.

We watched the rise of conspiratorial politics. We watched the normalization of institutional contempt. We watched executive power stretch in ways that tested legal boundaries. And rather than panic, we built.

We built legal safeguards.
We built trade alternatives.
We built infrastructure.
We built relationships beyond a single axis.

Because trust and infrastructure are never reactive. They are cumulative. They are acknowledgments that stability cannot be assumed indefinitely.

Now, back to the build.

This is the part that often goes unspoken: we know our neighbour well. We know the brilliance of its institutional intent, and we know the volatility of its politics. We have studied its cycles for generations, because our economy and sovereignty required that vigilance.

So when cracks appeared — not just policy disagreements, but deeper fractures in institutional predictability, and national character — we did not treat them as temporary storms. We treated them as risk variables.

We prepared not only exits for ourselves, but landing spaces for friends.

Parallel does not mean separate in the real world. It means optional.

It means that if volatility increases in one system, we are not trapped inside it. It means that allies who seek stability have somewhere to anchor.

This is what a parallel economy actually means. Not secession. Not hostility. Not theatrical rupture. It means supply chain diversification. It means trade corridors that do not hinge on a single executive branch. It means capital flows that can reallocate toward predictability.

It means building the dam before the flood.

The most remarkable thing about the past year is not that Canada responded. It is that Canada was ready.

We had already cultivated deeper trade ties with Europe. We had already expanded Indo-Pacific engagement. We had already structured infrastructure financing to protect autonomy. We had already built procurement strategies that aligned with long-term interoperability beyond a single partner.

What looks sudden is often the visible crest of years of quiet work.

What looks like defiance is often preparation meeting reality.

We are a large country — geographically, economically, strategically. For a long time, we were comfortable minimizing that fact in the name of cooperation.

Now, we are learning how to cooperate without minimizing ourselves.

That is not aggression.

It is maturation.

And it is long overdue.

Not adrenaline.
Not triumph.
Just… pride.

The quiet kind — the kind that doesn’t need defending.

Seeing Canada step onto the global stage this week, while everything else feels reactive and frayed, was surreal. The speech was incredible, yes — grounded, composed, unmistakably confident.

But what stayed with me wasn’t just what was said.

It was how we showed up.

Not loud.
Not performative.
Not desperate to prove anything.

More like recognition.

And it took me a few days to understand why that mattered so much.

Waiting for the Signal

Many of us have been waiting for the signal.

“Elbows up” was that moment — confirmation that our worst suspicions were right.

Since then, it’s felt like we’ve been on alert for when it would be time for:

“Gloves off.”

The moment where it all turns into a fight.
And lately, it’s felt close.

I think many of us — myself included — assumed that moment would look loud.

Military.
Violent.
Aggressive.

That’s the U.S. playbook: provoke fear, expect a flinch.

What happened instead caught almost everyone off guard.

A Book I Put Down

I’ve always been a reader. It’s rare for me to reject an idea without giving it real consideration.

When I was about 20, I tried to read Free to Choose by Milton Friedman.

I got a few chapters in and stopped.

Not because it was hard —
but because it felt obviously wrong.

An economic model built on endless growth, extraction, and materialism?

Even then, I could see it couldn’t last.

That book became the backbone of Reagan-era U.S. economics — and eventually, global neoliberalism.

Seeing the System From the Inside

What struck me this week is that Prime Minister Carney would have seen that ideology being shaped from the inside.

Harvard in the early 80s.
Oxford.
Goldman Sachs.
Central banking.

He didn’t just study the system.
He watched it being justified in elite rooms — often with a kind of honesty you only hear when people think everyone agrees.

And crucially: he’s not American.

He’d likely be assumed American. Our stars often are. Anything great must be.

That gives you a very clear view of how power really thinks.

Why the Goalie Metaphor Fits

And it clicked for me when you pair that background with the goalie metaphor — not as branding, but as instinct.

In Canada, you don’t end up a goalie by accident.
You’re the kid with the odd stick in your hand, while your dad’s tying your skates.

Hockey makes sense to him for the same reason it does to most Canadians.

But the pull to the goalposts?

That starts early.

Before the stats.
Before the score.
Probably before he could count to 100.

A six-year-old who didn’t want the puck —
he wanted to guard what mattered.

Somewhere around the same time, math showed up.

Patterns.
Angles.
Consequences.

No way of knowing yet where either would lead.

We just happened to luck out that when it was time to go pro,
he chose mathlete.

What Canada Did Instead

Here’s the part that feels most important.

Canada didn’t respond to pressure by escalating.
We didn’t try to dominate.
We didn’t try to replace the U.S. as the centre of the universe.

We did something much quieter —
and much more destabilizing.

We reduced dependency.
We built alternatives.
We strengthened trust elsewhere.

You don’t beat an empire by confronting it.
You beat it by making its leverage optional.

Historically Literate, Not Radical

None of this is unprecedented.

Rome.
Spain.
Dutch.
British.
Now the U.S.

Same arc, every time:
dominance → overreach → coercion → denial → collapse.

The real madness isn’t decline —
it’s repeating the same structure and expecting a different result.

Canada’s move wasn’t revolutionary.

It was historically literate.

Living Next to Power

Here’s something we don’t talk about enough:

Canadians are very good at living next to power.

At reading moods.
At spotting bad faith.
At surviving proximity without becoming what we’re next to.

We’ve spent decades watching U.S. culture wars from the sidelines.
Our Charter of Rights insulated us.
We settled fights they’re still tearing themselves apart over.

That gave us pattern recognition.

The Narcissist Dynamic

If you’ve ever lived with a narcissist, you know this dynamic.

You don’t win by screaming.
You don’t win by explaining.
You don’t win by exposing everything.

You win by gaining autonomy.
By building options quietly.
By not telegraphing your exit.

That’s not cruelty.
That’s survival.

Micro or macro — the psychology is identical.

The Shift People Are Missing

This is where people underestimate what’s happening.

The old system depends on:

• materialism

• status

• logos

• endless consumption

But consumers are shifting.

Climate reality matters.
Values matter.
Experience > things.
Meaning > brands.
Trust > dominance.

That’s not ideology.
That’s observable behaviour.

And it opens enormous opportunity.

Conditioned to Look South

Canada already had free trade with the EU.

We just… didn’t use it.

We traded with China for quite some time too, in case that’s news.

But most Canadians were told a “good” business looked like this:

Canada + the U.S.

If you sold south, partnered south, or got traction there —
you’d made it.

That wasn’t destiny.

That was conditioning.

What We Actually Have

It turns out we have things global audiences actually want.

And not just commodities.

Ideas.
Culture.
Food.
Tech.
Education.
Ways of living.

But we were kept small — on purpose.

And when problems showed up, the conservative solution always seemed to be the same: privatize more, scale harder, become more useful to them… and be grateful you get a cut at all.

The Numbers Tell the Story

They’re 250 years into that experiment.

The number sticks out.

We’re at, like, 158.

Prime Minister Carney isn’t planning for us to spend the next century following their path.

We don’t aspire to conquer. We’re pretty chill most of the time.

We know exactly what the next 100 years would look like if we did.

The invitation at Davos wasn’t to join a new Canadian empire.

But he did invite you to join something real.

Beavers are our national symbol for a reason.

To Americans Who Feel Panicked

To Americans who feel panicked about not being number one:

Even if you’re 2 or 3.
Even if 4 or 5.

It’s fine. We’ve all been doing it.

But you still have a broken system — and you have to build it new.

We’ve got some ideas you might quietly admit work better than “the American way.”

This isn’t about abandoning you.

It’s about ending the zero-sum assumption —
that if the U.S. isn’t dominating, everyone else must be doomed.

Two Economies

There are two economies in your country.

Sort it out — and help us figure out who we can build with.

That work is already happening.
Quietly.
Carefully.
Without spectacle.

Fairer, Not Punitive

Trade will still happen.
Partnerships will still exist.

They’ll just be negotiated without the scale permanently tipped.

Where you spend money matters — down to the product, the supply chain, the values behind it.

Some businesses will choose one path.
Others will choose another.

For anyone outside the top 1% —

This isn’t punishment.

It’s actually fairer.

The Final Miscalculation

Here’s the mistake being made right now:

Assuming restraint means weakness.
Assuming kindness means compliance.
Assuming you can threaten a goalie without consequences.

Touch the crease — and discover what else is true about the team.

That’s not a threat.

It’s history.

We didn’t become what we were resisting.

For much of this year, Canada was forced into an uncomfortable clarity: seeing our relationship with the United States as it actually functioned, not as we had long imagined it. Familiarity had been mistaken for safety. Proximity for mutual respect.

There was room for Canada to be frustrated.
There was room to be angry.
There was even room to want to leave.

What U.S. leadership did not plan for was Canada proving that it could.

A working alternative cannot be allowed to stand.

Canada’s approach — calm, coordinated, values-driven, non-theatrical — demonstrates something deeply threatening to systems built on dominance: that walking away can be stabilizing, not chaotic. That protection does not require cruelty. That leverage can be rebuilt without force.

That example must be discredited.

This is why lashing out at Europe matters.
Why sudden praise for adversaries appears when convenient.
Why blame becomes externalized the moment plans backfire publicly and irreversibly.

An enemy is required to manage the fallout.

Agency, once clarity arrives, does not need to be loud. Sometimes it looks like choosing where money moves. Sometimes it looks like supporting ideas and creators that do not center you — but help you understand the system you are inside.

For Canadians, this moment carries both opportunity and responsibility.

There are real openings ahead: economic, cultural, and diplomatic. Canada’s reputation is strengthening precisely because restraint has replaced reaction. But when control over supply and leverage begins to slip, escalation becomes a risk.

This is the discipline now required:
Pride without triumphalism.
Calm without passivity.
Clarity without provocation.

This is not punishment.
It is protection.

The change is already here. The future will not look the same — and that future holds opportunity for Canada, insight for international partners, and an unflinching mirror for Americans willing to look.

🧠 The Pattern You’re Feeling but Can’t Name

Let’s call it what it is: the narcissist playbook—charm, chaos, discard, repeat.
Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

They call us polite; they mean compliant.
They call us friends; they mean audience.
And when we stop laughing at the punchlines, they call us ungrateful.

The confession — a boundary that told on the room

I’ve been wrestling with something these last few days. It started at the restaurant when the chef walked out scrolling his phone: “Oh wow, Charlie Kirk just got shot at an event.”

Before I even thought, I said: “Good. Fucking douchebag.”

Later I learned he didn’t survive. My first thought? “Good. The only good Nazi is a dead one.”

Even my fella looked at me sideways. And I startled myself too. I’m usually the empath in the room — the first to look for context, humanity, repair. But not this time. Not for someone who spent years professionalizing harm and calling it “freedom.”

I didn’t post a hot take. I did quietly repost a line that made me snort: “So, Nazis aren’t immortal. We know that now.” Then I sat with why I laughed, why I felt relieved, and what it means to meet a death with zero grief.

Sometimes the edge of your compassion is diagnostic. It tells you something about the ground you’re standing on.

This is where the journal entry begins. Not with authority, not with virtue — with the uneasy awareness that compassion has a boundary, and that boundary is information.

The wrestling — civility as laundering vs. civility as protection

Was I wrong to feel that way? Maybe. I can hear the well-trained voice of civics class: “There’s no place for political violence.” And I agree — in a healthy democracy, there isn’t. But that sentence has been used for decades to launder the violence that already exists: the lies, intimidation, stochastic terror, state power turned inward, guns as theology, cruelty as entertainment. At some point “politics” ends and war begins, even if only one side admits it.

Part of what rattled me is I’ve spent a lifetime practicing compassion. I know what it’s like to hold my boundaries with narcissists — personally and politically. But there’s a phase in every narcissistic collapse when the charm fails, the rage flares, and the system starts eating itself. I think we’re there. And I think a lot of good people still underestimate what that phase demands from us.

Grace is a virtue. Access is a policy choice.

The longer timeline — foreshadowing you only catch on the rewatch

If you’ve ever watched a great film twice, you know the feeling: the second time you notice all the foreshadowing. The line tossed off in act one. The look in a character’s eyes. The prop on the shelf. You watch it again and think: it was all right there.

From where I live — on the Canadian side of the border — the foreshadowing has been blinking for decades:

• The late-20th-century pivot into market absolutism that promised prosperity and delivered precarity.

• The national myth of “greatest on Earth” that required a blind spot big enough to hide genocide, slavery, foreign coups, and a gun cult.

• The industrialization of outrage — not an accident, a business model.

• Movement actors perfecting DARVO at population scale.

Meanwhile, Canada (imperfectly, inconsistently, sometimes by luck) kept self-correcting toward the middle. Boring centrism. A Charter that hardened into a cultural firewall. Trade diversified beyond a single southern pipe. Our public language bent toward reconciliation and climate responsibility, even when our execution lagged. We kept betting on trust — in institutions, in pluralism, in the stubborn little idea that “sovereign means sovereign,” even when we disagree.

We trained for the breakup by building trust elsewhere — quietly, steadily, on purpose.

None of that makes us angels. But it does mean we’ve been standing outside the boiling pot for a long time, watching the water roil. We hyper-understand our neighbour. They reliably misunderstand us.

The breakup lens — forgiveness isn’t access

If you’ve ever ended a relationship with a narcissist, you know the drill: the charm phase, the mask-slip, the smear campaign, the love-bomb, the threats, the pity play. Outsiders tell you to be civil. Insiders warn you to be careful. And you learn — painfully — that there’s a difference between forgiveness and access.

Living beside America has been like that. We love them. We trade, we travel, we work together. But we also learned to lock the door, keep records, copy the texts, and tell our friends. We built backup plans. We made new friends in Europe and the Pacific. We trained for the Arctic route like it’s the next sea-highway and we might be asked to keep it safe. We started acting like a small, steady country that other small, steady countries could trust.

From here, it feels like the break has been happening in slow motion for years. Not a dramatic slam of the door — more like learning to live next door with better locks and brighter lights.

The boundary of grace — pluralism vs. permissiveness

Back to that restaurant moment. Why no compassion? Because at some point, endless grace becomes complicity. The insistence on “civility” toward people who profit from cruelty isn’t moral, it’s performative. They are not misunderstood debate-club rivals; they are operators who don’t stop until they’re stopped. They can’t afford to, because the entire architecture requires escalation.

In collapse, the danger spikes. Not because the cause is righteous (it isn’t), but because the narcissist’s fear of losing is bottomless. That’s when people get hurt, institutions wobble, and the temptation to “both-sides” reaches for your throat. That’s when good people need crystal clarity about the difference between pluralism (we disagree, we coexist) and permissiveness (we let predation parade as politics).

Private compassion can be a discipline. Public access must be a boundary.

Seeing the tells — two Canadian scenes this week

Two small Canadian scenes gave me hope:

• Rugby: Canada’s women punching above their weight — a mostly amateur squad out-strategizing pros and earning their way into the later rounds. It’s the most Canadian story: grit, teamwork, no chest-thumping, just results.

• Toronto: A white-nationalist maple-washed protest turned out and was outnumbered by counter-protesters and calmly escorted (got the message, “Not Welcome. F*UK All the way off.) out of the park by Toronto Police. Line held. Civility used correctly — to protect the public square, not to platform the predators.

They’re small, but they’re tells. When you’re scanning for drift, these moments matter. They say: people can still tell the difference. Institutions can still work. #ElbowsUp isn’t a brawl posture; it’s a balance stance.

What phase we’re in — and what it asks of us

If I’m honest with myself — and with you — I think we’ve entered the part of the story where underestimation is the real risk. The foreshadowing has done its job. The collapse logic is visible. Auto-cannibalism is here. What does that ask of us, practically?

• Name the game. Stop pretending narcisso-politics is “just another viewpoint.” It’s a method: chaos, grievance, impunity.

• Hold bright lines. Refuse the platform, enforce the law, protect targets, and defend boring institutions. (Boring is a blessing.)

• Invest in trust. Locally (schools, libraries, civic groups). Internationally (plural, values-aligned trade, cooperative security). Trust is slow power.

• Practice proportionate mercy. Private compassion isn’t public access. Boundaries aren’t bigotry; they’re how communities stay free.

• Stay human. We don’t have to mirror the worst to defeat it. That’s the trap. We can win without becoming what we fight.

Closing the journal for tonight — blueprint & globe

Maybe this is just me thinking on paper, startled by my own lack of grief. Maybe it’s also a dispatch — a reminder that Canada didn’t stumble into relative steadiness by accident. We chose it, again and again, in a thousand policy nudges and cultural instincts that add up to a center of gravity.

America, I don’t need you to be self-aware for me to see you. I live next door. I’ve watched the movie twice. I know the tells. I also know there’s another way to be powerful — the slow power of trust.

And because I believe in that slow power, I’m trying to do my small part: write clearly, draw boundaries, and help sketch a blueprint out of this. We’ve already seen flashes of it — neighbours and allies choosing dignity over spectacle, trade built on reciprocity not leverage, people realizing that “this isn’t just policy; it’s self-respect.” The instinct travels: when one country finds its elbows, others remember theirs.

Good will win here, I believe that. But good isn’t passive. Good draws lines. Good protects the vulnerable. Good removes access from people who abuse it. Good builds something sturdier in the shell of what’s breaking.

It won’t happen.

August 1st was never going to be the turning point.

It’s just paperwork now.
The signatures on a breakup that’s already six months deep.

The deadline isn’t a decision—it’s a distraction.
A tantrum masquerading as diplomacy.
And like most tantrums, it’s not really about what it claims to be.
It’s about losing control.

Here’s the part that might be hard to hear—especially if you’ve been holding onto hope:

We’re not negotiating.
We’re exiting.

And it’s not because we got a better offer.
It’s because we realized:
We were never going to trade duty-free for dignity.

And when we finally looked in the mirror—
we didn’t like what was standing beside us anymore.

🌨️ The Elbows Up Era Begins

Trump’s re-election didn’t surprise us.
But it did something we hadn’t expected.

It cleared the fog.

It forced us to confront something we maybe weren’t ready to admit—
about the relationship, and about ourselves.

The “51st State” comment wasn’t a slip of the tongue.
It was a reveal.
And when he threatened to cross our border—to flood our cities with “problems” of his own making—
something in our national psyche clicked into place.

#ElbowsUp wasn’t performative.
It wasn’t a social media flashpoint.
It wasn’t some Bud Light bonfire or billboard stunt for attention.

It was grief.
It was dignity.
And it was a kind of emotional clarity you don’t walk back from.

We didn’t rage.
We didn’t riot.
We didn’t perform our pain for spectacle.

But we did rally—around each other.
We made headlines—but not the kind they knew how to read.
Because this wasn’t about tariffs.
It was about trust.

We… shifted.
Quietly. Collectively.
And with more resolve than anyone expected.

When It Stopped Being About Him

Despite everything—the trade imbalances, the insults, the chaos, the lies—
Trump said America didn’t need Canada.
Didn’t need our trust.
Didn’t need our trade.

And then—like a bad business partner who overestimates their charm—
he told his most loyal customer to go somewhere else.
And he truly believed we wouldn’t.

But we did.

And we’re still doing it.
Quietly. Deliberately. Across industries.

Your tourism numbers? Down.
Your wine exports? Flatlining.
Your border-state coupon campaigns, apology discounts, and last-minute loyalty pleas?

They’re not landing.
(We get a good laugh at you wasting your money though.)

Because what you still can’t wrap your head around is exactly what shifted.

This stopped being about Trump.
It started being about you.

🪞You Don’t Have to Be Self-Aware for Us to See You

Let’s pause here, because this is where the conversation gets harder—and also, clearer.

Because no one’s really debating what Trump is anymore.

Left, right, international, domestic—we’ve all seen enough.
He’s the textbook.
The living, blustering embodiment of narcissism.

The traits practically parade themselves:

• Grandiosity

• Loyalty tests

• Public shaming

• Weaponized charm

• Victim theatrics

• Absolute refusal to take responsibility

We don’t need a psych degree.
We just need eyes.

We’ve seen this pattern before—in bad bosses, abusive exes, dysfunctional family dynamics.
Some of us have helped friends through it.
Some of us have lived it.

So when he started spiraling, we knew the playbook.
When he tried to bait us, we knew not to bite.
And when he told us we didn’t matter—we understood it was never really about us.
It was about control.

But then something strange happened.

The same tactics showed up… from the people who were supposed to be different.

Blue state governors showed up in Ottawa with smiles, not solutions.
Tourism departments launched “apology discounts” and syrup-drenched loyalty campaigns.
Progressive thought leaders warned us not to overreact, or risk empowering him further.

“Don’t punish us—we didn’t vote for him.”
“You know we love you, right?”
“Can’t we just go back to how it was?”

That’s when it clicked.

These weren’t messages of love.
They were messages of loss.

And the real ask beneath the performance?

“Please stay in the system that benefits us.”

Suddenly, the difference between “him” and “them” got a lot smaller.

Because even the people who claim to oppose him?

Still want the power he normalized.
Still want the loyalty without accountability.
Still want the benefits of the relationship, without the responsibility of protecting it.

They may not act like him.
But they benefit from the same rules.

And if you’ve ever left a narcissist, you know this moment too:

When you realize it wasn’t just the loud one.

The Quiet Realization

We didn’t come to this all at once.

We watched the escalator.
We watched the cruelty.
We watched the chaos.

We waited for someone to wake up.
We waited for the institutions to hold.
We waited for the “better angels” to show up.

And some did.
But not enough.
Not fast enough.
Not clearly enough.

Because the real realization didn’t come when he returned.
It came when you let him.

The second time wasn’t a fluke.
It wasn’t an accident.

It was a confirmation.

We thought he was the aberration.
But the second time, the second rise, the second wave of excuses?

That’s when we saw it:

He wasn’t the break in the mirror.
He was the mirror.

🪞 When the Mirror Doesn’t Flinch

By now, the conclusion felt inescapable:

It wasn’t just him.

It wasn’t just one man’s pathology.
It was the operating system he ran on.

And it didn’t shut down when he left the room.
It’s still running—through institutions, expectations, even the opposition.

Because here’s what finally settled in:

The United States doesn’t just elect narcissists.
It rewards them.
It teaches them.
It raises them in mythologies of exceptionalism—then hands them a microphone.

Even the ones who claim to be fighting back still carry the same foundational assumption:

“We’re the greatest country in the world.”
“We know best.”
“We don’t need to change—you just need to come back.”

And when your “good guys” come to Ottawa—not to take responsibility, but to ask us not to respond?

That’s not solidarity.
That’s self-preservation, dressed in empathy.

Because the ask was never really about us.
It was about them—their supply chains, their border economies, their reputations, their sense of self.

And when we didn’t flinch?

That’s when the mirror got uncomfortable.

Because this time, we weren’t looking for reassurance.
We were looking at the pattern.

And we finally realized—
we weren’t crazy.

🧼 The American Narcissist Wasn’t Born—It Was Bred

It’s uncomfortable to say out loud. But it needs to be said clearly:

Hitler didn’t invent the rules of white supremacy.

He studied them.

And he learned them from the United States.

From Jim Crow to forced sterilizations, segregated schooling to boarding schools for Indigenous children, the blueprint was already laid—long before Germany scaled it into genocide.

The idea of a “master race” didn’t come from Germany.
It came from Mississippi.
And Manhattan.
And Madison Avenue.

So when the U.S. went to war, they weren’t just fighting fascism.
They were disowning a reflection.

And after the war?
They didn’t clean house.
They built museums.

They rewrote themselves as the saviours—and slowly, subtly, they started believing it.

That’s how the myth grew.

Not in malice, but in myth-making.

🧠 Even the Marginalized Carry the Myth

This is the hardest part to talk about. But if we’re going to make sense of what’s happening—we have to say it:

Even those most harmed by the empire often internalize the story that being American means being above.

And how could they not?

Every classroom, campaign, movie, and apology reinforces the same ideas:

🦅 Your freedom is the world’s goal
📺 Your stories are the center of the narrative
🇺🇸 Your problems deserve global attention
🏆 Your leadership is destiny, not decision

Even second- and third-generation immigrants are told they’ve “made it to the top.” And often, they’re rewarded—for protecting the system that keeps others out.

This is how the myth maintains itself.

Through repetition. Through reward. Through reach.

It’s why no one flagged the 51st State comments as a red flag.
You thought it was a joke.
We saw it as a threat.

Because what you didn’t realize is—we weren’t laughing with you.
We were listening to you.

🧱 We Were Never Partners. We Were Property.

This is what February clarified—not emotionally, but structurally:

You didn’t see us as equals.

Not the GOP.
Not the Democrats.
Not your governors or your policy wonks.
Not your op-ed writers or industry heads.

To America, Canada was:

🛏️ A polite backup plan
🚪 A quiet supply chain
🧊 A stable icebox to keep things cool

Not a partner.
An asset.

You built a system where our loyalty was expected—but our autonomy was inconvenient.

So when we stopped playing along?

You called it betrayal.

But it wasn’t.

It was self-respect.

Because we didn’t betray you.
We just stopped betraying ourselves.

🔮 The 51st State Line Broke the Spell

That line wasn’t a gaffe. It wasn’t a joke.
It was a test balloon—to see how far they could go.

And when the outrage didn’t come from you?

It came from us.

It wasn’t just Trump we were reacting to anymore.
It was the pattern.

We didn’t erupt.
We unified.
Quietly. Organically. Strategically.

Because by then, we’d seen enough to recognize it:

This wasn’t about politics.
It was about possession.

And the clearest proof?

No one offered to let us leave.
They just asked why we were so emotional.

✂️ You Can’t Just Cut Ties with a Superpower

Let’s be clear: this isn’t a clean break.

We share borders.
We share industries.
We share infrastructure.
Hell, we share Netflix algorithms.

This isn’t a dramatic “goodbye forever.”
It’s more like moving into your own apartment after years of living with someone who kept the thermostat too cold and never noticed you were sick.

There are still shared responsibilities.
Still shared bills.
Still moments we’ll be in the same room.

But the relationship?

It’s changed.

Not because we stormed out.

But because we finally saw the pattern—and started acting accordingly.

💣 Why Narcissists Rage When You Leave

We didn’t burn the bridge.

We just stopped walking across it.

And when the tantrums came—the new tariffs, the veiled threats, the guilt-laced editorials—we didn’t engage.

We didn’t explain.
We didn’t flinch.
We didn’t come running.

Because that’s what they expect.

And when a narcissist senses they’re losing control?
They don’t try to win you back.
They try to make you doubt yourself.

🌀 “Don’t punish the good ones.”
🌀 “We love you in Minnesota!”
🌀 “We didn’t vote for him—please don’t punish our businesses.”
🌀 “Can’t we just go back to how it was?”

But we can’t.

Because we’re not the same country we were before the spell broke.

We don’t need you to say sorry anymore.
We need you to understand why we stopped waiting for it.

And if the country known for saying sorry isn’t apologizing this time?

You should ask yourself why.

This is what leaving looks like—when you’re still next door.

It’s not loud.

It’s not always headline-worthy.

It’s sober.
It’s strategic.
It’s sometimes sad.

We know who we’re dealing with now.

Because you can’t fall for manipulation once you’ve recognized the pattern.

You stop explaining.
You stop proving.
You stop hoping they’ll be different next time.

And you start investing in yourself instead.

Walking away isn’t always about slamming the door.

Sometimes, it’s just… not answering anymore.

Not out of hate.
Not out of fear.
But because the conversation was never mutual to begin with.

And now that we see that clearly?
