He drives home and sends his eldest the long way around by the high pasture to tell us, because that is what neighbors do. By the next morning there&#8217;s a second camp where the ridge road crests, and where there used to be one fire sending up smoke at dawn there are more.</p><p>Havel doesn&#8217;t come to explain. Havel doesn&#8217;t come at all. Whatever is deciding things across the ford now, it isn&#8217;t the man who spoke to us with implacable courtesy and gave us until midsummer, and his absence tells us more than his visits did.</p><p>I start counting that same day.</p><p>The food is fine. It&#8217;s high summer &#8212; the garden is producing faster than we can eat it and we have plenty of sugar and salt laid by to preserve things. The lofts are full to the beams with first and second cutting of hay, the hens have never laid better, and nobody at this table believes the business across the ford will run long enough for the pantry to matter. I finish the page anyway. I finish all the pages, every evening, the tally book open on the table next to the mending basket, because it&#8217;s something my hands can do while my head wants to get lost in worries, and half the kitchen finds a version of the same. Gregor cross-checks the watch list that hasn&#8217;t changed. Annika supervises the pickling of enough zucchini to feed an entire army.</p>

That&#8217;s the report from everyone who crosses &#8212; they stop you at the bridge, they greet you, one of them writes your name and your business in a book, and they wave you through. The road learns the lesson anyway: the peddler who always comes for the wool doesn&#8217;t come, the Thursday truck runs half empty, and by the second week the lane belongs to us and the dust sits on it undisturbed from one day to the next.</p><p>The hay doesn&#8217;t care. The second cutting comes in on drying weather, the whole valley in the fields with forks, and the loft fills the way it&#8217;s supposed to. The work goes quieter than last summer &#8212; less calling across the rows, more looking up when an engine sounds &#8212; but it goes.</p>

The desert lets go of the road a little at a time, scrub, then avocados, then rooftops, and San Diego comes up the way it always does, all at once at the top of the last grade with the marine layer still sitting on it. I drop into it one more time.</p><p>The complex looks the same. Stucco, the palm trees that really should come down, the mailboxes by the gate. Somebody else&#8217;s car is parked in my old spot, even though the lease runs to the thirtieth. I have to return the keys today though, because on the thirtieth I&#8217;ll be in training. The office manager&#8217;s name is on the envelope, and the unit number on the corner of the envelope, which is the way she likes things, even though the office is closed today and she won&#8217;t see it till tomorrow.</p><p>I drop the envelope with the keys in it through the slot in the door and look around one last time.</p><p>The light&#8217;s on behind the curtain in 220. I don&#8217;t go up, but I hope her nephew is taking her groceries up for her now that I&#8217;m gone for good. </p>

He sees men on the ridge road &#8212; three of them, standing where the road shows the whole valley, one with field glasses and one making marks in a little book &#8212; and he doesn&#8217;t call out and he doesn&#8217;t go closer. He counts them, counts how long they stay, and when they walk their trucks back over the ridge he comes down the hill at a dead run and gives it all to Torin in order, out of breath but complete: how many, how long, which way. Martin, who was at the other end of the watch, confirms it.</p><p>By midday there&#8217;s a second report. Stefan, cutting thistle in the low field, watched a truck sit at the far side of the ford for the better part of an hour, engine off, nobody in a hurry.</p><p>Nobody panics. Kaleb runs the muster that afternoon, three short blasts on the tinker&#8217;s whistle, and the children come streaming to him from every corner of the yard, shrieking, racing each other, because to them it&#8217;s the best game of the summer and the fastest one gets to hold the whistle next. He counts them, walks them down to the cellar and up again, and sends them back to their afternoons. He drills it twice more before supper, shaving seconds off each time.</p><p>The trucks come up our lane the next morning.</p>

Neither of us mentions it.</p><p>Breakfast is eggs and the last of the good bread toasted in the oven, and it happens mostly in silence, the workable kind. He eats like a man with a long drive ahead of him.</p><p>He refills both mugs and starts telling me things.</p><p>&#8220;The spare pump seal is under the sink, left side, in the box with the washers. If the pressure drops, it&#8217;s the fitting on the second tank &#8212; you don&#8217;t need the part unless tightening it with the wrench doesn&#8217;t fix it. The kitchen faucet still wants to fall to the right when you shut it. Don&#8217;t fight it, just re-seat it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I know how my own faucet works.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You know how it works now,&#8221; he says, and there&#8217;s almost a smile in it. &#8220;The gate hinge probably needs some oil in another week or so. It&#8217;s on the shelf with the filters.&#8221;</p><p>I don&#8217;t write any of it down and he doesn&#8217;t ask me to. We both know I have it.</p><p>When the coffee&#8217;s done he washes his mug and sets it in the rack, handle tucked into the corner so more dishes will fit, and flips the towel over the oven handle, both ends level, the same as every morning since May.</p><p>The pile at the bottom of the ladder goes up and outside in two trips. Duffel and jacket, then one more trip to grab his workboots. The truck hasn&#8217;t been this empty in weeks.</p><p>&#8220;Charger?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Packed.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Phone?&#8221;</p><p>I don&#8217;t know why I&#8217;m asking. I watched him do it. He holds the phone up anyway.</p><p>I make sandwiches while he loads his gear &#8212; two of them, and an apple, in a paper bag with the top folded over twice. I don&#8217;t hand it to him yet.</p><p>At the end he goes down the ladder one more time. To check the pilot light on the furnace, he says. He comes back up with empty hands and nothing to report. Nobody checks a pilot light in June, and we haven&#8217;t even turned the furnace on since I bought the place.</p><p>At a quarter to eight there is nothing left in the relay that belongs in the truck, and no reason left to stand in the kitchen, so we don&#8217;t.</p>

The whole pack turns out when he parks in the courtyard. He has needles and thread and tin cups and a drawer of toys and whistles and gadgets that every child in the valley has been waiting for since the snow, and he sets up on his tailgate in the courtyard and holds court there half the morning.</p><p>I stand in the yard with Aleks on my hip and listen to him talk for the better part of an hour &#8212; prices, gossip, the state of the roads, a wedding two valleys over, all of it in those long northern vowels of his.</p><p>A year ago his voice came through a line of wet sheets and put me on the ground. I bought needles off this same tailgate with my heart still slamming against my ribs, and walked home pretending, and Torin watched me do it from the fence line and said nothing until I brought it to him. This year I stand in the sun and listen to the man haggle with Annika over a copper pan, and my body never once mistakes him for anyone but himself. I take stock of that while Aleks tries to eat my collar: a year, the bond low and warm under everything, a winter of reading and a spring of work. I don&#8217;t know which part did the most of it, and it doesn&#8217;t matter &#8212; the pantry&#8217;s fuller than it was, is all, and I let myself be pleased about it in my own way.</p><p>He holds his news until he&#8217;s done selling, when the crowd in the yard thins out, and then he stands turning his hat by the brim and asks if Torin has a minute, and looks at me to say the minute is mine too.</p><p>&#8220;There was a man at the Crosskeys through the winter,&#8221; he says. &#8220;A northerner. Someone will have mentioned him. He was paying for talk about the people here, in the valley.&#8221; His thumb works at the hat brim. &#8220;The innkeep&#8217;s girl told me what he was asking, there at the end, before he went north. It was more than people, it was which roads come into this valley from the east. Who keeps the bridge at the ford. How many grown men at the holding up the valley.&#8221; He looks at the ground and then makes himself look at Torin. &#8220;It&#8217;s sat wrong with me the whole road here. I thought you should know.&#8221;</p>

The greens come up in rows, still contained and linear for now. The beans sprout twice, because the first planting meets a frost that the almanac promised wouldn&#8217;t come, but the second set are climbing the strings tied to the fence with more determination than you could normally assign a plant other than ivy. An enormous order of chicks arrives for Danni in a crate on the Thursday truck and take over a corner of the yard and most of the conversation for two whole days. Aleks sits up on his own now, and puts everything in reach into his mouth, because the teething goes on and his opinion of it hasn&#8217;t improved.</p><p>The household has learned a new thing about me without anyone saying it out loud: after the house goes down at night, the lamp in our room burns another hour. Nobody asks. Torin sleeps through it mostly, and sometimes he doesn&#8217;t quite, and asks one question with his eyes shut.</p><p>&#8220;Anything useful?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;If you consider how to settle a spooked horse from across the yard useful,&#8221; I tell him dryly, one night in the second week. &#8220;Without touching it, without a word. There&#8217;s a note in the margin that says it works better on horses than on men.&#8221; We don&#8217;t have horses here, and I&#8217;m not sure I&#8217;d know what spooking looked like anyway.</p><p>&#8220;Most things do,&#8221; he says, and is asleep again before I turn the page.</p><p>That&#8217;s the surprise of the books, now that I&#8217;m reading them instead of carrying them: they&#8217;re working books. I came to them expecting scripture and found something closer to Annika&#8217;s recipe collection &#8212; instructions, amounts, cautions, corrections in three or four different hands where a granddaughter disagreed with a grandmother. They&#8217;re about the gifts of moon twins, and the women who wrote them were moon twins and their words are practical: what works, what doesn&#8217;t, what it costs, what to have ready before you start. I was born the moon twin and raised to believe it was a superstition my grandmother should have been talked out of. The women who wrote these knew better.</p><p>I read slowly, because the text is faded and spidery and the light is one lamp, and most importantly because every few pages there&#8217;s a thing I have to put down and sit with.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><div><hr></div><p>The stores round takes me to the cottages the first fine morning of the week, with Aleks on my hip and the tally book under my arm, because Annika&#8217;s instruction from the winter still stands: they won&#8217;t tell you what they&#8217;re short of, so you go and look. I look. Flour, lamp oil, salt, the state of the wood piles, who&#8217;s mending what that we ought to replace instead. It&#8217;s the kind of errand that used to take an hour and now takes three, because everyone wants to see Aleks&#8217;s latest trick of pushing himself up onto his hands and knees. He&#8217;s not crawling yet. Soon. But today, my first stop isn&#8217;t any of the cottages. The argument at the well has been going on a while before I get to it.</p><p>Iva&#8217;s voice arrives first &#8212; she keeps the tidiest flower garden down in the row of cottages and her temper is legendary &#8212; and then Stefan&#8217;s under it, low and stubborn. Stefan is Martin&#8217;s cousin and keeps the goats, and one of the goats has been through Iva&#8217;s seedlings twice now, and the second time is this morning. Her early alyssum and his goat, and his tether and her fence, around and around. There are four others at the well not fetching water, and Stefan&#8217;s ears are red, and Iva has reached the part where she&#8217;s repeating herself louder, and the whole thing has gone past the goat into the winter of a year ago and a borrowed hand-cart that came back with a cracked shaft, and it is going absolutely nowhere.</p><p>I can feel where it&#8217;s stuck. That&#8217;s not new &#8212; I&#8217;ve been able to feel where an argument is stuck since I was a girl, two hot places shouting past each other, though I didn&#8217;t realize everyone didn&#8217;t know that until I was older. What I do about it is new, and I do it before I&#8217;ve decided anything: I lean on the heat. Both of them, the same flat pressure I&#8217;d put on a pot lid rattling, and I hold it there while I shift Aleks up my hip, and the heat goes down like a fire when the damper closes.</p><p>&#8220;The tether stake&#8217;s pulled loose twice because the ground down there is all sand,&#8221; I say, into the space where the shouting was. &#8220;Stefan, move the stake to the field side and set it in clay. Iva, he&#8217;ll split you rails for the bottom of the fence while he&#8217;s at it, since his goat showed everyone where the gaps are.&#8221; A breath, both of them looking at me. &#8220;And the hand-cart shaft was cracked before it was borrowed. Martin told me so when we were doing the inventory over the winter and the pack will replace it before anyone needs it for the spring harvests.&#8221;</p><p>It comes down that fast. Stefan mutters about clay and allows that he can split rails Thursday. Iva says he&#8217;ll take his dinner at her table if he&#8217;s working her fence line, because she&#8217;s not having it said she starved a working man, and says it like a threat, and that&#8217;s the end of it. The women at the well go back to the water. Everyone will say afterward that the Luna sorted it in ten minutes, and everyone will mean the words, and only I&#8217;ll know which part did the lifting.</p><p>I finish the round with the numbers coming slower than they should, tired in a place that isn&#8217;t my legs, and it&#8217;s most of the walk home before the last of their heat finishes leaving me.</p><div><hr></div><p>Isaac mends the handle of Danni&#8217;s wash bucket that week. He does it badly in one respect only, which is that he leaves it where she&#8217;ll find it and then is elaborately elsewhere all morning, and Danni figures it inside a minute because everyone figures it inside a minute, and carries the bucket past the barn where he&#8217;s elaborately busy so he can see her not saying anything about it. Gregor, at the fence with me, watches the whole performance and says, &#8220;Redfern raises them slow,&#8221; in the voice of a man very pleased with everything despite himself.</p><p>Meissa&#8217;s new trunk is filling in the corner of the girls&#8217; room &#8212; aprons, a good dress, the herb lists Sera has her copying into a new blank book. Sera teaches her in the afternoons now, an hour here and there between chores: which fevers wait for morning and which don&#8217;t, what a sound chest sounds like, how to talk to a frightened mother without lying to her. Meissa writes it all down and then lies awake reciting it, according to Danni, who shares the room and reports on it with a sister&#8217;s ruthlessness.</p><p>At supper the oven question comes around again, the way it has once a week since the letter. &#8220;Midsummer&#8217;s coming,&#8221; Annika says, to the table at large. &#8220;I&#8217;ll want to know who&#8217;s minding my oven before it does.&#8221;</p><p>And Isaac, who has been shy of speaking at that table for three weeks, says, &#8220;At Redfern there&#8217;d be six hands up before you finished asking.&#8221; Everyone looks at him and his ears go red, but he finishes it. &#8220;There&#8217;s more of us than there&#8217;s places, is all &#8212; younger ones. My sister&#8217;s seventeen and there&#8217;s no share coming to her and nothing for her to do but wait for one.&#8221; He looks at his plate. &#8220;I got lucky, being sent.&#8221;</p><p>He says it like an apology, which is what makes it sit down in the middle of the table and stay there.</p><p>I don&#8217;t say anything. Annika doesn&#8217;t say anything. Across the width of the table she looks at me and I look at her, and the whole of a conversation happens in it &#8212; the empty cottage past the well, the oven, the seventeen-year-old sister, the tally book that knows exactly how many beds this pack&#8217;s territory has and how few people are in them.</p><p>&#8220;Is that so,&#8221; Annika says, to her soup.</p><p>That night the lamp burns for an hour, and I find the passage that I need at the very end of the first grimoire.</p><p>It&#8217;s four pages, in the oldest hand in the book, and it&#8217;s about giving calm. Not soothing with your voice, not waiting a temper out &#8212; taking the heat off a person like you&#8217;d take a heavy pot off a child, on purpose, with your own grip. It&#8217;s written as instructions: when it&#8217;s wanted and when it isn&#8217;t; how to hold your own steadiness so you don&#8217;t hand them your worry along with the quiet, which the writer says is the commonest fault and the reason to practice on animals first; and what it costs, listed as plainly as the flour in my tally book: their heat sits in you awhile; don&#8217;t do it tired; don&#8217;t do it twice in a day until you&#8217;ve practiced; eat after.</p><p>I read it twice. A woman two hundred years dead, explaining my last month to me in the same hand that wrote down her own feelings and thoughts and dreams.</p><p>At the bottom of the third page, in the margin, there&#8217;s a line in a different hand &#8212; later, harder, the ink almost black where the rest has gone brown.</p><p><em>It goes the other way as well. Don&#8217;t.</em></p><p>That&#8217;s the whole of it. There&#8217;s no heading, and nothing more about it on that page, or the next, or the one after.</p><p>I sit with the book open across my knees for a while, and the lamp hisses, and the house sleeps around me. Iva and Stefan didn&#8217;t ask me to take anything off them today. I&#8217;d have minded, if it had been me &#8212; a hand coming into my own weather uninvited, however kind. I did it anyway, and it worked, and Thursday there will be rails split and a fence mended because of it. He counts everything as it goes into the bag. Socks. Workout clothes &#8212; they still have tags on them; he bought them Thursday, and whatever the Lodge plans to do with eighteen men at a church camp, it apparently involves running. Good clothes for Sunday Mass, folded flat. The flashlight. Work gloves and jeans. Trainers. Toiletries, his phone charger, and his Bible goes in last, on top, where anyone looking will see it first.</p><p>&#8220;Sunscreen,&#8221; I say. &#8220;You need sunscreen.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to burn,&#8221; Robin says, without any heat to it.</p>

What she does have is magic, a broken bond, and a burning desire never to let anyone treat her like she doesn&#8217;t matter again. </p></blockquote><h1><strong><span>CHAPTER 1</span></strong></h1><p><span>The kitchen has been awake since four. I have been awake since three, because someone has to pull the coarse loaves for the lower tables out of the oven and build the fires back up so the finer can go in before the head cook arrives.</span></p><p><span>Two hundred and six place settings for the wedding of Alpha Kellick of Silvercrest, and I think I have carried, polished, or counted most of them. The good silver comes out of the cellar in felt-lined boxes that only the wolfless are trusted to handle &#8212; we can&#8217;t be tempted to steal it, the joke goes, because our weakened wolves&#8217; healing won&#8217;t protect us from the burn the way a real pack member&#8217;s would. Misha, newly promoted to head of all us servers, laughs at it every time. I count forks instead, and ignore the burning anger in my gut.</span></p>

We&#8217;re coming into the end game. :) </p></blockquote><p>The mud takes three weeks to give the roads back, and then it&#8217;s planting, and the valley stops having time for anything else.</p><p>The council&#8217;s seed grain goes in first. Torin and Martin run the seed drill, Kaleb walks behind with a bag of seed on his hip for the corners the machine can&#8217;t reach, and I keep the tallies &#8212; what&#8217;s in, what&#8217;s held back for a late frost, which field got what. Aleks supervises from a blanket at the headland, working on his new trick, which is rolling from his back to his belly and then roaring about it, because he has not yet worked out how to roll the other direction again.</p><p>The drill chokes twice on the far field on a wet morning when Aleks is inside with Sera, and I&#8217;m pulling wash off the line before it can get drenched when Torin&#8217;s temper reaches me from a quarter mile off, a hot little coal of it arriving unannounced. Without thinking much about it I lean on the coal like putting a hand flat on a restless animal and hold it there for a soft, reassuring breath, and it banks. He comes in at noon with grease to the elbows and says the drill fought him all morning but gave up before he did, and I pass him the bread and don&#8217;t examine my part in that too closely.</p><p>Isaac comes up the lane on the Thursday truck with a letter from his Alpha and a duffel. He&#8217;s from Redfern pack, Gregor&#8217;s sister&#8217;s grandson &#8212; he has Gregor&#8217;s irascible expressions, and Gregor&#8217;s way of standing &#8212; sent south for the planting season now that there&#8217;s a planting season here worth sending someone to. He&#8217;s nineteen, tall through the shoulders, with rough hands he doesn&#8217;t know what to do with at the table. He calls Annika ma&#8217;am until she tells him to stop, and then he can&#8217;t call her anything at all without stammering. The first time Danni takes his plate at supper he thanks her twice.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><p>By the end of his first week, the work he volunteers for keeps turning out to be wherever Danni&#8217;s is &#8212; the garden rows when she&#8217;s weeding, the woodpile when she&#8217;s hanging wash. And Danni&#8217;s errands have started taking the long way around the yard, past whatever he happens to be helping that day.</p><p>I listen to him once, the first supper, out of a habit older than manners &#8212; and there&#8217;s nothing in the boy but what shows: nerves, appetite, and a bright startled attention every time Danni laughs. Gregor watches the two of them over his soup with the studied face of somebody determined to be no part of anything, and mends the hinges on the yard gate the next day without being asked, the one with the sight line to the wash bench.</p><p>Meissa&#8217;s letter comes the same week, and she reads it at the table twice before she can say it out loud. Slywood is willing to take her for medical training, come midsummer &#8212; Sera spoke to them for her in a letter sent midwinter, it turns out, and neither of them said anything about it until there was something to tell. Two years of training and lodging at the big holding in exchange for three years of circuit work after, which is the kind of contract this valley couldn&#8217;t have dreamed of signing a year ago. The kitchen goes up like a flock of hens. Annika lets it run a while, then says, &#8220;Who&#8217;s minding my oven come midsummer, then,&#8221; which from Annika is a blessing with the price attached, and Meissa cries into the bread dough and ruins none of it.</p><p>Sera doesn&#8217;t say anything. She sits by the stove with her knitting and the look of a gardener admiring a tree she means to sit under someday.</p><p>Aleks pays for the busy season by the end of it, with teething and a sleep regression all at once. There&#8217;s a day in late spring when the whole household passes through the kitchen twice an hour and he&#8217;s handed around and cooed at and shown to Isaac and jounced by Danni, and by evening he&#8217;s past crying and into that thin ragged wail that doesn&#8217;t want food or a dry cloth or any of the six things Annika suggests from her chair. I take him up to our room away from the lamps and walk him, and the wail keeps on, and somewhere in the walking I stop trying remedies and just gather up all that frayed too-much and take it, the same as taking a heavy basket off someone whose arms are done. He shudders twice against my shoulder and goes down like a lamp turned out.</p><p>Sera is in the doorway with clean clothes when I turn around, and has been for a while. She looks at the sleeping baby, and at me, and goes back down the stairs without a word, and I sit on the end of the bed for an hour afterward, jangled and over-bright, every sound in the house arriving too loudly, holding a day that isn&#8217;t mine until it fades.</p><p>The Vetters come up the lane on a beautiful brisk morning, moving at the careful speed of somebody telling himself there&#8217;s no hurry.</p><p>It&#8217;s Marek&#8217;s eldest, hat in hand at the kitchen door, with road-news passed west along the chain of news, the arrangement Torin asked for and got. The man who spent a year paying for answers at the inn two valleys east has stopped paying. Settled his account, tipped the innkeep for his trouble, and took the north road. Three weeks back, this was &#8212; the word came slow because the word was that nothing was happening anymore.</p><p>Torin comes in from the field with mud to the knee, and the boy tells it again, and Torin doesn&#8217;t send me out and doesn&#8217;t send the boy out. He turns to me halfway through and the rest of it gets told to both of us at once, which Marek&#8217;s eldest will carry home with him too, and that&#8217;s worth something on its own.</p><p>Three weeks. However far north the man was going, he&#8217;s been there a while now.</p><p>I say that part out loud, flat, over the teapot, and nobody argues with the arithmetic.</p><p>What we do about it takes less time than the tea. Gregor hears it before supper. The ridge watch picks up a second man that night. Torin walks the fence from the well to the north gate and back again with his hands clenched in his pockets, and then he comes in and asks whether the low field can take the last of the barley this week, because it can&#8217;t wait on anything and neither can anything else out there. The thaw and the news each came on their own schedules and nothing about the north road changes what the low field needs this week.</p><p>&#8220;We should think about whether the council hears it from us first,&#8221; I say that evening, drying bowls, and he says, &#8220;Mm,&#8221; in the tone that means he&#8217;s been thinking the same thing and hasn&#8217;t finished, and neither have I, and we leave it there by common consent, a thing set on the shelf where we can both see it.</p><p>The house goes down for the night in its usual order. The doors barred, the stove ticking with banked warmth, Danni&#8217;s lamp out early because Isaac is up at dawn and so, suddenly, is Danni. Torin&#8217;s breathing goes long beside me and Aleks sleeps the ferocious sleep of a baby with a big day behind him, and I lie there awhile in the quiet, and there&#8217;s nothing in it. No count running. No list waiting for morning. The tallies are done, the letters are answered, the seed is in or scheduled, and nobody in this house needs one single thing from me until the sun comes up.</p><p>I get up and light the lamp.</p><p>The grimoires have stood on the shelf by the window since the winter I came, spines out, dusted on Thursdays like everything else. I took them out of a castle in the dark with a bag around my neck and a man&#8217;s trust broken behind me, and I have not opened one since &#8212; first because I was running, then because I was hiding, then because I was busy being found, and there was never an evening to spare.</p><p>I take the first one down and sit with its weight across my knees. The cover is older than my grandmother.</p><p>Inside, the first page is handwriting, close and slanted, in the graceful hand I learned my letters in &#8212; from home, from the north, from before either of those words meant trouble &#8212; and I turn up the lamp and start at the beginning.</p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p>Katina's story is just beginning. (And yes- this is a shifter romance.) </p></blockquote><p>The cold holds for another six weeks and then starts to lose its grip on the afternoons. The council&#8217;s first allocations come in a hired truck while the roads are still frozen hard &#8212; seed grain, drums of fuel, and a stamped manifest I check against my own copy line by line while the driver has lunch from Martin&#8217;s kettle of soup. Beat the mud or wait for planting, the driver says, like everyone knows it, because here, everyone does. In the middle of all this, Aleks learns to laugh, a big startled cackle out of nowhere, and everyone in the household spends a week making fools of themselves trying to cause it.</p><p>We marry on a Tuesday, because Tuesday is the day that ends up working out the best.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><p>Chores come first. Nobody suggests otherwise. I boil the milk and turn the cheeses and feed the hens with my hair already braided in a fancy crown that Danni rose before dawn to put in for me, and Torin is in the barn until midmorning because a heifer chose this week to step on a sharp stone and split the sole of her hoof open. Delicious smells have been coming from the kitchen for the last two days &#8212; Meissa guarding the oven like a dragon with its hoard, Danni rushing from task to task regardless of the actual speed they need. Sera arrives early and installs herself where she can supervise without being asked to help.</p><p>Kaleb comes at noon. He doesn&#8217;t knock; he goes to the truck in the yard, opens the hood, and works there for an hour with his sleeves rolled, and when he comes in he washes his hands and says, to the room in general, &#8220;Heater&#8217;s fixed. It was the valve. Whole thing was ten minutes if anyone had looked.&#8221; Then he takes the chair at the end and glowers at the bread until someone gives him some, and he doesn&#8217;t leave.</p><p>The wedding happens in the main room, late afternoon with lamps lit against the early dark, with everyone still hungry from a light lunch before the feast to come. There&#8217;s no one to stand in front of us. That isn&#8217;t how it&#8217;s done here &#8212; Annika told me about it weeks ago, at the table, as if it was nothing more important than how the pump in the courtyard works during a hard frost. The Alpha says what he intends in his own words. The Luna answers in hers. They sign the book. If you can&#8217;t find your own words to say to your own mate, she said, you&#8217;ve no business calling each other that.</p><p>Today, she sits in the good chair with Aleks on her knee and runs the room with her eyebrows.</p><p>Torin stands in front of me in his clean shirt with his hands loose at his sides, and the pack goes quiet the way a kitchen goes quiet, which is to say almost.</p><p>&#8220;I, Torin Vasik, Alpha of Ironholt, take Katina as my wife and my mate and my Luna.&#8221; He says it like the thing at the woodpile &#8212; level, and landing. &#8220;I&#8217;d have waited as long as you wanted. I&#8217;d have waited wrong, is the truth of it, and you know that better than anyone, so.&#8221; A breath. &#8220;I want you. I want my whole life with you and you to find a whole life with me. That&#8217;s my intent, and everyone here is a witness to it.&#8221;</p><p>I kept mine short on purpose. I&#8217;ve said longer ones before, and they meant much less.</p><p>&#8220;I, Katina of Ironholt Pack, take Torin Vasik as my husband and my mate and my Alpha. I choose it.&#8221; I look at him and not at the book. &#8220;I choose you, and I choose a life here, with you, and our family. Everyone here is a witness to that.&#8221;</p><p>We sign. His hand is careful. Mine doesn&#8217;t shake, much, and the name I write is the one a clerk two valleys away has been keeping warm for me since midwinter. The ink isn&#8217;t dry before Meissa is shouting about the goose, and the room goes straight back to being a kitchen.</p><p>The registry entry I&#8217;ll copy for the census supplement myself, tomorrow. I have filed the truth of this pack&#8217;s Alpha, its heir, and now its Luna. The set is complete and something about that feels right.</p><p>Dinner is as good as this kitchen can make it, which by now is very good. Roasted goose, the last jars of the good preserves opened, bread that Meissa allows to be praised. Sera stands up with her cup at some point and says, &#8220;I&#8217;ve pulled half this room into the world and buried too much of it, and this is the best table I&#8217;ve sat at in years. To the Luna, who counts everything. May she never count us short.&#8221; Danni cries and denies it. Phillip eats until he has to sit sideways. Kaleb stays through all of it, arms folded, saying twice that the goose is overdone, having thirds.</p><p>Aleks is passed hand to hand down the table like the bread until he objects and comes back to me, and later Danni appears at my elbow, mighty with responsibility, and takes him for the night &#8212; two doors down, with instructions she recites back to me twice and clearly intends to exceed.</p><p>We go up the stairs with the last lamp, and I close our door with him inside it.</p><p>We know this part now, is the thing. His hands and my hands have long since worked out their division of labor, and the clean shirt joins my good dress over the chair back, and we&#8217;re most of the way into the warm side of the quilt with his mouth at my throat when he stops.</p><p>All the way &#8212; weight on his forearms, breathing hard &#8212; and he lifts his head and looks at me.</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re sure.&#8221; He doesn&#8217;t mean tonight &#8212; tonight&#8217;s been sure for months. He means the other thing, the one there&#8217;s no undoing.</p><p>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; I say, with no running start and no speech. He searches my face anyway, thorough, taking his time, and whatever he finds there is enough.</p><p>His mouth comes back to my throat and finds the old scar on its way, the ridge of it under his lips. He doesn&#8217;t route around it and he doesn&#8217;t stay &#8212; one unhurried kiss on it, the same as the skin on either side, and he moves on.</p><p>At the last edge he pulls back once more and looks at me, and I give him the one syllable he&#8217;s waiting for.</p><p>The bite is a bright hot line and his arms around me and my hands in his hair holding him there, not away &#8212; and then the sting is already fading and what comes after it doesn&#8217;t strike. It settles. Like the stove&#8217;s heat reaching the far room. Where I have spent my whole life hearing other people through a wall, there is suddenly a door standing open &#8212; one door, his &#8212; and what comes through it is him, clear. The want and the awe and the terror of dropping something precious and the flat bedrock certainty under all of it, running clear and close and in words almost &#8212; at the very edge of words, the shape of my own name in his mind arriving a half-second before he says it out loud.</p><p>&#8220;Katina.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I know,&#8221; I say, and I do, and I&#8217;m laughing or crying, one of the two, both. &#8220;I heard you.&#8221;</p><p>We finish what we started, slower now, his forehead against mine, and I am present for the whole of it &#8212; every second, awake, in my own body, nowhere else, no one else, the lamp burning down.</p><p>After, he sleeps first, as always. The new mark at my throat beats warm beside the old one. What drifts across from him has nothing urgent in it &#8212; contentment, banked for the night, dimming toward dreams &#8212; and I lie in it like lying in sun.</p><p>Sometime before morning I half wake to a sound I can&#8217;t place, soft and steady, off the eaves.</p><p>It&#8217;s the thaw. I have Aleks wrapped against me in a double-thick, extra long shawl Sera made for us both, and he sleeps through the whole cold rattling two hours of it, which everyone at home assured me he would not.</p><p>The host pack&#8217;s holding is larger than ours, and the signs of their prosperity start appearing almost a mile out. There are poles alongside the road with wire strung between them, running up toward the buildings like a fence for birds. The yard we pull into is swept stone, and there are four trucks in it, all newer than ours, and a pump on a post that smells of fuel where a well should be. Inside the main hall the light comes on when a woman touches the wall &#8212; no flame anywhere in it, steady as noon, humming faintly if you stand under it.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><p>It&#8217;s money. That&#8217;s how I file it, because that&#8217;s the shelf my childhood built for things like this: the north does it with gold or with spellwork, and the south apparently does it with wire. What it adds up to is a holding that has never needed to ask for help, or been answered generously every time.</p><p>This is what a pack looks like when it&#8217;s been allowed to stay on the map.</p><p>I&#8217;m here as baggage, is my understanding. Torin will present the petition I mailed off back in the spring, Annika as the long-time Luna will lend her weight to it, and I&#8217;m to sit at the end with the baby in case a number needs finding. I&#8217;ve got the supplemental sheets in a folder under the one Torin prepared, just in case.</p><p>The council room has a long table and a shorter one, clerks at the shorter one, and a man with a ledger who calls the delegations through in a voice that has done it a hundred times.</p><p>&#8220;Ironholt,&#8221; he reads. &#8220;Alpha Torin Vasik.&#8221;</p><p>Nobody blinks. Torin doesn&#8217;t blink. The clerk had already written his name in the box &#8212; has been working from that box for months, him and every roll copied off it &#8212; and he goes on down his page while something I put in ink last summer sits there being boringly true.</p><p>&#8220;Annika Nolan,&#8221; Annika says, when the clerk looks up for the rest of us. &#8220;And Katina Vasik &#8212; the acting Luna of Ironholt. And the young Alpha-heir, who&#8217;ll be no trouble.&#8221;</p><p>The clerk writes it down. That&#8217;s all it takes, apparently.</p><p>I keep my face in order, which is a skill I did not learn in the south. Torin, beside me, is looking at the councilors with a carefully blank expression on his face. He knew, and it&#8217;s not as if we&#8217;d set a date yet. I&#8217;ll be having a word.</p><p>The presentation is short because Torin doesn&#8217;t pad. The losses, the recovery, the two harvests since, the watch they keep. Annika speaks once, about what losses meant, personally and practically, and the room listens to her intently. Then the questions start, and the third one has numbers in it, and Torin looks at me, and the folder is already open on my knee.</p><p>It&#8217;s the livestock allocation they&#8217;ve caught &#8212; our request runs high against the standard table for a holding our size. &#8220;Your figure&#8217;s correct for a count of households,&#8221; I say. &#8220;Ironholt lost whole households, not heads out of each. The standard table spreads losses; ours came in clusters. The corrected count, by registered adults surviving, is on the second supplemental sheet &#8212; line nine.&#8221; Papers turn down the long table. The councilor who asked makes a mark and moves on, and the room&#8217;s attention comes back to me twice more, for the seed grain and the truck fuel, and both times the answer is already clipped where they can&#8217;t miss it.</p><p>Aleks sleeps through his family&#8217;s finances. Somewhere in the middle of it a councilman down the left side looks at me a beat longer than the numbers need. Then he&#8217;s back in his papers. Then, a while later, once more. He&#8217;s an ordinary man with an ordinary face and I go on answering questions.</p><p>The trouble, when it comes, comes politely.</p><p>A councilor near the head of the table &#8212; silver-haired, unhurried, the kind of careful that has kept him at that table for decades &#8212; folds his hands and says the petition is sound and the case is well made, and the council is minded to assist. &#8220;There is, however, an additional matter.&#8221;</p><p>I force myself to hold still as he continues.</p><p>&#8220;There have been questions, from the north, seeking a woman travelling alone. Whoever&#8217;s asking has resources and patience, and the north&#8217;s attention, once it fixes on a holding, has historically not confined itself to that holding. This council is not interested in getting involved in a conflict with our Lycan neighbors.&#8221;</p><p>Torin stiffens, but Annika puts her hand on his arm and he goes still.</p><p>&#8220;The council can assist Ironholt,&#8221; he says. &#8220;But this council cannot be seen to be party to anything that might invite further questions, or harboring any fugitives.&#8221;</p><p>He never looks at me. That&#8217;s the strangest part. He talks about the stranger in question and conflict with the north with words as dry as the forms I filled out, while I sit twelve feet from him with a baby against my chest and a folder of his council&#8217;s own arithmetic on my knee.</p><p>The council is calculating, papers turning, moods shifting. I can feel it doing the sums &#8212; the balance moving, not against me exactly, but toward prudence, like water finding a door left open.</p><p>Torin stands up.</p><p>He doesn&#8217;t do anything else. He stands, and the room&#8217;s arithmetic stops, and I&#8217;ve felt this before in a kitchen and a courtyard but never in a government: the bodies down both sides of that table come up out of their papers like the temperature changed.</p><p>&#8220;Who has spoken of fugitives?&#8221; he says.</p><p>The silver-haired councilor starts to answer him and doesn&#8217;t get to continue.</p><p>&#8220;This is my son.&#8221; Not loud. Landing one at a time, like posts going in. &#8220;This is my mate. This is my Luna. She wrote the petition in front of you, she filed the census your clerks have been copying all year, and the man on the roads can be told whatever this council likes, because there is no stranger at Ironholt.&#8221; He puts one hand flat on the table, the file under it. &#8220;Now. We keep a doubled watch and patrols that check on our neighbors, and nothing past that is any of the Council&#8217;s business.&#8221;</p><p>And then he sits down and waits for the agenda to catch up with him, and the agenda &#8212; after a long silence &#8212; does.</p><p>They vote the aid through without conditions. Allocations by spring thaw, sums to committee, the words rolling out in the register I&#8217;ve been reading for months, and the clerk writes and writes. The silver-haired councilor votes for it too, unhurried as ever, and inclines his head to Torin afterward, satisfied, like he&#8217;d tested something and found it as expected. Maybe that&#8217;s even what it was. I don&#8217;t go looking under him to find out. Aleks wakes at exactly the wrong time and roots loudly, and half the council pretends not to smile, and that does more for Ironholt&#8217;s standing than the supplemental sheets did.</p><p>We drive home into the early dark. The wires run along beside us for a mile and then stop, and after that it&#8217;s just road.</p><p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve finally found the letter,&#8221; Annika says, to the window.</p><p>I look at her. She doesn&#8217;t elaborate. She&#8217;s asleep inside of ten minutes, or doing an immaculate impression of it, with her chin in her collar and her gloves folded on her knee.</p><p>&#8220;You knew what she was going to do,&#8221; I say. &#8220;The introduction.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I did.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You could have said.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;d have spent the drive rehearsing.&#8221;</p><p>The heater in the truck doesn&#8217;t work, and the road bangs along under us frozen solid. I think about being angry. It has all the parts: the two of them deciding, the not telling, me finding out in an important meeting with my name going into a ledger. But he watched me answer their hardest question with the answer already clipped in place &#8212; nobody rehearsed me for that either &#8212; and the difference between this and the old way is that the old way hid things so I&#8217;d stay small, and this hid one thing so I&#8217;d not fret myself into pieces. It worked. I let him know it&#8217;s the last one he gets for free, and he says &#8220;Mm&#8221; again, and Aleks sleeps on between us like punctuation.</p><p>The kitchen lamp is burning in the window when we come up the lane, gas-yellow and small after the hall with no flames in it, and Meissa has kept plates for us warm on the back of the stove.</p><p>After dinner, Torin carries the sleeping heir of Ironholt up the stairs. The wood gets split and stacked to the shed roof, the last cabbages come in, the geese flying south overhead loudly announce their departure, and Annika is back at the long table running the kitchen like the week in bed never happened, except that she naps in the afternoons now and dares anybody to remark on it.</p><p>Torin&#8217;s boots live under my bed now. Nobody in the house has ever said a word about it. And when anything comes up the lane &#8212; a peddler, a letter, a Vetter with a market price &#8212; I hear it the same day, usually before he&#8217;s worked out how to say it, so I get it in pieces with the mud still on it. It&#8217;s happened twice now, neither any relation to the man asking questions in the summer. He tells me the nothing too, though, and keeps his promise.</p><p>The baby has run out of room. What used to be a flutter is a heel now, or an elbow, dragged along the inside of my ribs like furniture being moved. I sleep badly and wake early, and so does he, because a woman this size turning over is an event everyone on the mattress attends.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><p>This morning the baby is awake before either of us. I take Torin&#8217;s hand without asking and put it low on the side of my belly, and we lie there in the cold-room dark and wait, and the kick lands square in his palm. Then another, harder, indignant. He jumps, but his hand stays. He doesn&#8217;t say anything, and neither do I, and after a while the baby settles and Torin gets up and builds the fire, and that&#8217;s all there is to it..</p><p>All morning he&#8217;s got something in his pocket, metaphorically speaking. Not something I can see, just, a thing in the set of his shoulders, in how he stacks the breakfast dishes wrong and doesn&#8217;t notice, in how he&#8217;s wherever I am with about ten minutes&#8217; lag all day. I could ask. I&#8217;ve spent two months not managing him and he&#8217;s spent two months not managing me, and it turns out the discipline is the same for both: you wait, and you let a person come to you when they&#8217;re ready to.</p><p>Torin is ready in the middle of the afternoon, when I am outside behind the courtyard counting the cords of wood split and stacked for the winter.</p><p>I&#8217;m standing just on the edge of the paved part of the yard, with one hand in the small of my back like every enormous woman in the history of enormous women, and he comes around the corner with the axe he&#8217;s just cleaned and doesn&#8217;t hang it up. He stands it against the chopping block, head down, and turns his gloves inside out, and puts them on the block too, and by then I&#8217;ve stopped counting because watching him is more interesting.</p><p>&#8220;The wood&#8217;s fine,&#8221; he says. &#8220;You counted it Tuesday.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Doesn&#8217;t hurt to keep the tally current,&#8221; I say dryly. I&#8217;ve been waiting, but now I want to know what he&#8217;s been holding in all day.</p><p>&#8220;I know.&#8221; He looks at the gloves like they might have the rest of his sentence in them. &#8220;I told you when I asked, you&#8217;d know everything I know. You do. There&#8217;s nothing new up the lane, there&#8217;s nothing I&#8217;m holding, Annika hasn&#8217;t said a word to me about taking over her duties since the summer. It&#8217;s just me here. But &#8212;&#8221; He takes an enormous breath.</p><p>My heart is going hard and slow, both at once, the good way.</p><p>&#8220;&#8212; Marry me,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I want you here. As my mate. Not for shelter and not for the baby and not for Annika&#8217;s succession plans.. For me.&#8221; Another breath, a shaky smile. &#8220;That&#8217;s the whole speech.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; I say.</p><p>He blinks. He&#8217;d prepared for a longer negotiation.</p><p>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; I say again, &#8220;obviously, you enormous &#8212; come here,&#8221; and he does, and his hands come up under my jaw and he kisses me with the whole afternoon behind it, and I have one fistful of his coat and the woodpile at my back, and somewhere in the middle of it the baby hauls off and kicks him through me, hard enough that he feels it and laughs into my mouth.</p><p>And then the pain comes around my back like a band tightening, long and low and nothing at all like a kick, and my whole body says oh with great authority, and water goes down the inside of my legs and into my boot.</p><p>&#8220;Torin.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Mm.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;ll have to help me up the yard before you celebrate.&#8221;</p><p>I will say this for the man: he doesn&#8217;t waste one second being shocked. He gets my arm over his shoulders and we go up the yard between the woodpile and the pump, stopping once for the next pain, and he puts his head in the kitchen door and says, &#8220;It&#8217;s started,&#8221; in the same voice he&#8217;d use for rain coming, and the house turns over like a wagon changing gears.</p><p>Meissa gets the big kettle on before Annika finishes standing up. Annika stands up anyway and starts pointing. And Phillip is by the door pulling his boots on before anyone has said his name &#8212; he just looks at me, once, the question in his face, and I say, &#8220;Sera. Run,&#8221; and he&#8217;s gone with the door banging, down the lane flat out, twelve years old and the most important man in the valley.</p><p>The stairs take a while. Everything takes a while, that&#8217;s the first thing I learn about this; the second is that it doesn&#8217;t care what you had planned. Annika has the bed stripped to old sheets by the time I&#8217;m up them. Sera arrives with her basket while the light&#8217;s still good, checks me with cool hands, and says, &#8220;First ones take their time. Walk while you can walk,&#8221; so I walk, one end of my own room to the other, and the lamp gets lit, and later the lamp gets refilled, and there&#8217;s bread and cheese and apples on a plate by the window that nobody eats.</p><p>Torin stays.</p><p>Custom would put him downstairs with the other men and the good sense. Nobody suggests it. Annika looks at him once, standing with his arm around me to steady me while I circle back and forth across the room, and says only, &#8220;Mind you don&#8217;t let her fall,&#8221; and that&#8217;s the whole of the pack&#8217;s opinion on the matter.</p><p>The pains close up their ranks after dark. I stop walking and start working, and it is work, the realest I&#8217;ve ever done &#8212; Sera calls the pace of it like she&#8217;s calling a plow team, Annika keeps the clean bedding coming and the fire fed and one running commentary going that I will not remember a word of and would not trade for anything. And Torin holds my hand. That&#8217;s all he does. He doesn&#8217;t tell me I&#8217;m doing well, he doesn&#8217;t tell me to breathe, he holds on and lets me wreck his hand, and underneath everything, where I can&#8217;t help hearing people whether I want to or not, he is steady. Not calm &#8212; I can feel the fear in him, banked like a fire at night &#8212; but steady, planted, going nowhere. I hold onto the hand and I hold onto the steadiness under it, and between pains I rest my head against his forearm and he bears down on nothing right along with me.</p><p>Somewhere past the middle of the night Sera says, &#8220;Now, then,&#8221; in the voice of a woman opening an oven, and the world narrows to the width of one task.</p><p>My son is born just before the coldest part of the morning.</p><p>Sera puts him on my chest, slippery and furious, louder than any creature that size has a right to be, and I look at his face.</p><p>I&#8217;ve been afraid of this exact half-second since the first time he moved inside of me. I braced for it the whole way down.</p><p>It&#8217;s a small red furious face, fists going, mouth open on a squall, and it&#8217;s nobody&#8217;s face but his own. My son. I looked, and I know him.</p><p>&#8220;Well,&#8221; Annika says, over my shoulder. &#8220;He&#8217;s got lungs like his great-aunt.&#8221; None of us correct her. The expression on Torin&#8217;s face is utterly besotted.</p><p>Sera does whatever midwives do with cord and cloth, brisk as a woman dressing a goose, and the baby roots at me and latches like he&#8217;s the one who thought of it, and the room keeps moving around us &#8212; water carried, sheets bundled, Meissa&#8217;s voice on the stairs asking if it&#8217;s over and Annika&#8217;s voice saying does it sound over &#8212; and none of them stops for us, and that&#8217;s the finest thing about it.</p><p>&#8220;Aleksander,&#8221; I say.</p><p>Annika tries it out under her breath, nods like she&#8217;s approving a hire. &#8220;Whose is it?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Nobody&#8217;s. It&#8217;s a nice name.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Hm,&#8221; Annika says, which from her is a signature.</p><p>When the baby&#8217;s fed and wrapped, Sera lifts him off me to check him over, and then she doesn&#8217;t hand him back. She turns and puts him in Torin&#8217;s arms, no ceremony, the same as handing over a loaf, and goes back to her basket.</p><p>He goes still. Both hands, the whole grip checked twice before he trusts it. The baby is about the size of one of his forearms. They look at each other, and Aleks &#8212; hours old, no opinion on anything yet &#8212; grabs one huge finger and holds on, and Torin stands there in the lamplight being held onto.</p><p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t drop him,&#8221; Annika says, wringing a cloth.</p><p>&#8220;No,&#8221; Torin agrees, not looking away.</p><p>Meissa wants to know if anyone&#8217;s eating the bread. Sera says she is. Somebody has to go down and bank the kitchen fire, and it isn&#8217;t going to be me, and there&#8217;s an argument brewing over whose turn that is, conducted in whispers on account of the baby who is not asleep.</p><p>Torin sits down on the edge of the bed with our son in his arms, careful, all of him arranged around the armful, and looks at me over the top of the blanket.</p><p>Outside it&#8217;s starting to get light.</p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p>Katina's story is just beginning. The book sits between us, open to a fresh page, and my coffee has gone cold next to the pencil.</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the question we can&#8217;t answer,&#8221; he says, himself again.</p><p>We started after dinner, because in eight days a building full of strangers gets a month to ask him anything they want, and the answers have to hold up without him having to think about it. The rules are the ones we already live by: Keep It Simple. A lie you have to remember. The truth, you don&#8217;t.</p><p>&#8220;Clarity&#8217;s off the table,&#8221; I say. &#8220;Paige has been saying my name into phones for a month. It travels.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;And your last name&#8217;s on the property, somewhere, if anybody digs.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;So the friend needs a different one.&#8221;</p><p>He waits. I turn the pencil over once.</p><p>&#8220;Claire,&#8221; I say. &#8220;Claire Lambert.&#8221;</p><p>My mother&#8217;s maiden name. Somebody might as well get some use out of it.</p><p>&#8220;Claire Lambert,&#8221; he says, twice, and nods, and that&#8217;s the whole christening.</p><p>I pick the drill back up. &#8220;How long have you known Claire?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Since spring.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;How&#8217;d you meet?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Parking lot in Barstow.&#8221;</p><p>I put the pencil down.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s true,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It&#8217;s even boring. Nobody follows up on a parking lot.&#8221;</p><p>He&#8217;s right, which is the worst part. I write it down: <em>met &#8212; parking lot, Barstow. True.</em></p><p>&#8220;Where&#8217;s her place?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;North of Barstow, off the county road, about forty &#8212;&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Too specific. Now Silas visits.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Out past Barstow.&#8221; He resets. &#8220;Dirt roads. You&#8217;d hate it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Better. What do you do out there all day?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Fixed her brakes this week. Set a gate post in the spring. There&#8217;s a faucet that used to drip.&#8221; All true. All boring. The best cover we own is a maintenance log.</p><p>&#8220;What&#8217;s Claire like?&#8221;</p><p>He thinks about it, and I keep my face doing its job, because somebody in a bunk row is going to ask him exactly this, in exactly this tone.</p><p>&#8220;Quiet till she isn&#8217;t,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Smarter than me. Feeds people when she&#8217;s worried about them. Makes terrible coffee.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;She sounds like a catch.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;She is,&#8221; he says, to the book, mild as a weather report, and the pencil is somewhere to look, so I look at it. It costs me a second. I write down <em>bad coffee</em> like it&#8217;s operational.</p><p>&#8220;When&#8217;s her birthday?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;She doesn&#8217;t celebrate birthdays.&#8221;</p><p>I look at him. He looks back, even. It&#8217;s a good answer. It&#8217;s even true. I don&#8217;t ask how he knows, and he doesn&#8217;t say, and the pencil moves on.</p><p>&#8220;Why&#8217;d you stop answering Silas&#8217;s calls in April?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I was busy.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a lie.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s half a lie.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Your jaw does a thing on half-lies.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;What thing?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;If I tell you, you&#8217;ll start doing it on purpose, and then it&#8217;ll be worse.&#8221;</p><p>He almost smiles, and we run it again from the top, and he gets smoother in the middle and worse at the edges, and I try to help but neither of us can keep a straight face past a certain point.</p><p>&#8220;Do people really ask this much?&#8221; he says, at the second cold drink refill.</p><p>&#8220;They could. Silas can ask you anything he wants to and you&#8217;re gonna have to answer him.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Silas.&#8221; He squares the pencil to the table edge, thinking. &#8220;When Silas asks about Claire, he&#8217;s going to want to know if she&#8217;s good to me. He&#8217;s not going to run a title search.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;He tracks people, Robin. It&#8217;s his job.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;He tracks witches. Strangers.&#8221; He says it with his whole chest, and I hear the faith in it, and I don&#8217;t know how to argue with faith before nine o&#8217;clock. &#8220;He watched me drop my entire life in April to go be with my new girlfriend. As far as Silas is concerned, I finally did something normal. He&#8217;ll be glad. He won&#8217;t look.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You realize he thinks we&#8217;re together. Like, seriously together.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I know what he thinks.&#8221;</p><p>He doesn&#8217;t offer to correct it. I don&#8217;t ask him to. I write <em>girlfriend &#8212; assumed, leave it</em> in the margin, and we both move on before it can get more awkward.</p><p>At the end I run him once more, fast, no do-overs. Name. Where&#8217;ve you been. Whose place. How&#8217;d you meet. What&#8217;s she like. Why&#8217;d you go dark. He lands every one of them level, boring, true, and the whole man sits there looking like nothing worth a second question.</p><p>&#8220;Again tomorrow,&#8221; I say.</p><p>&#8220;Again tomorrow.&#8221;</p><div><hr></div><p>The apartment takes one morning and fewer boxes than I expected.</p><p>The whole place is smaller than I thought &#8212; a studio, not even a one bedroom. The kitchen runs along one wall and you&#8217;d have to stand sideways to fit two people in it, a couch with a Navy blanket folded over the arm that you can almost reach from the twin bed by the windows, everything squared up to everything else, ready for an inspection nobody was ever going to run. He writes on the boxes as we fill them. <em>Kitchen. Books. Church. Winter.</em> The Sharpie squeaks. <em>Church</em> is one box, and it&#8217;s heavy &#8212; Bible study books, a rosary in a felt pouch, and at the bottom a missal with EMILIO S.-W. inked inside the cover in a boy&#8217;s careful hand. He packs that one himself, and I hold the box flaps and don&#8217;t ask, and the marker goes over the tape twice.</p><p>There&#8217;s a mug with a chipped rim from Carlsbad. Two basketball trophies with his last name spelled two different ways. A sweatshirt gone soft and frayed at the cuffs. A lamp so ugly I check twice that he means to keep it. He does.</p><p>He doesn&#8217;t slow down anywhere except once, at the closet, with the sweatshirt in his hands. Then he folds it into <em>Winter</em> and keeps going.</p><p>When the room is empty he stands in the middle of it for a second, thumb on his key ring. The keys stay on the ring &#8212; the leasing office is the fourteenth&#8217;s errand. Then we carry the last box down.</p><p>The woman in 220 opens her door while we&#8217;re loading the hallway. She&#8217;s small, and her cardigan is buttoned to the top in June. Robin tells her he&#8217;s moving out to a property near Barstow, which is true, and that a friend&#8217;s been keeping him busy out there, which is also true, and she looks at me for a long moment over her chain.</p><p>&#8220;Feed him,&#8221; she says. &#8220;He carries everybody&#8217;s groceries.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I know he does,&#8221; I say. I make sure to smile for her. &#8220;I&#8217;ll make sure he eats.&#8221;</p><p>She pats my arm and goes back in. That&#8217;s the whole goodbye.</p><p>None of today needed rehearsing.</p><p>Back at the relay, everything he owns goes down the hatch in eleven trips. All of it fits under or next to the cot in his room. I don&#8217;t say anything about the loveseat and neither does he.</p><p>&#8220;Where do you want the church one?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Under the winter one,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I&#8217;ll know where they are.&#8221;</p><p>He stacks the boxes against the wall, dry and square, and the bunker looks different with them in it. Lived in from two directions.</p><div><hr></div><p>We play the question game evenings, after the dishes, because evenings are when a dorm would run it.</p><p>&#8220;What did your mother cook when you were sick?&#8221; I ask, because a month of homesick small talk is coming for him and it should find him ready.</p><p>&#8220;Arroz caldo. Rice, chicken, too much ginger.&#8221; He turns his mug a quarter. &#8220;She&#8217;d make me eat it at the table so she could ask about my day.&#8221;</p><p>I write nothing down. Then, because nobody asked me anything:</p><p>&#8220;Maudie put honey in my tea when I was sick. Sweet enough the spoon stood up. She&#8217;d draw on the table while I drank it &#8212; left-handed, little patterns, over and over. I used to fall asleep watching her hand.&#8221;</p><p>He doesn&#8217;t move, and he doesn&#8217;t ask a follow-up. He takes it the careful way he takes anything he&#8217;s been handed unwrapped.</p><p>&#8220;That one&#8217;s free,&#8221; I say, and pick the pencil back up, and he lets me.</p><p>The next night the game finds Silas without either of us steering it there.</p><p>&#8220;Who taught you to drive?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Silas, at the county fairgrounds parking lot, I was fifteen, his truck was a manual.&#8221; He turns the mug another quarter. &#8220;He kept one hand over the horn the whole time. Two months of Sundays.&#8221;</p><p>He goes quiet after he says it, and I let the next question wait until he picks the thread back up himself.</p><p>Two nights later, late, the book already closed, he says: &#8220;Why doesn&#8217;t Claire celebrate her birthday?&#8221;</p><p>Not the drill voice. His.</p><p>The ventilation hums. My thumb starts toward my wrist and I put my hand flat on the table instead, and he sees me do it, because he sees everything now.</p><p>&#8220;That one&#8217;s locked,&#8221; I say.</p><p>&#8220;Okay,&#8221; he says.</p><p>That&#8217;s all. He gets up and rinses the mugs, and my chest does something I don&#8217;t examine, and the next question, when it comes, is about Silas&#8217;s truck, and it&#8217;s free, and I answer it.</p><p>Later, on the loveseat, with the light long and orange through the little window and the cushion that doesn&#8217;t match under his elbow, he almost says something. I watch it come up in him and get set down. He asks if I want the last of the coffee instead, and I say yes, and that&#8217;s what we do with it.</p><div><hr></div><p>Wednesday night he dries the plates while I wash, and somewhere between the second plate and the rack he says, &#8220;Thursday. I want to come.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re sure.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;If the work holds for Tomasa, we know something we don&#8217;t know today. And I&#8217;d rather be a man the queens have met than a story they&#8217;ve heard.&#8221; He hangs the towel halfway, both ends even. &#8220;They&#8217;re going to matter, Clarity. October is theirs too. I&#8217;d like to know their faces.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Tomasa&#8217;s not Esther. She&#8217;s not looking for anything specific.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Good,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Then it&#8217;ll mean something.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Okay,&#8221; I say, and it&#8217;s true.</p><p>The phone rings at eight, right on schedule.</p><p>&#8220;I know it&#8217;s early, mija. But seven thirty so we can be done before the heat. Bring the pad, bring the water.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I know, T&#237;a.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;And your young man? He&#8217;s coming?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;He&#8217;s coming.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Mm.&#8221; The good Mm. &#8220;Did you ever find a lamp?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;We have one now.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Then we&#8217;re civilized. We can have breakfast after.&#8221;</p><p>She hangs up. Robin puts the last mug in the rack, two handles pointed the same direction, and I line the water jugs up by the ladder for the morning. Four of them, because Tomasa never brings water and then she wants yours.</p><p>The last thing is the book. I open it to the cover page and give the day its line: <em>Thursday &#8212; Tomasa.</em> The date. I leave it open on the card table, next to the page where the blank line is still blank, and we set the alarm for five-thirty.</p><p>Early. It&#8217;s the big room at the front of the house that Annika shared with her husband, just down the hall from my guest room, with wide windows, an enormous bed covered with more quilts, and an intricately carved wardrobe with trees and wolves running through them on the door. Her husband&#8217;s razor strop is still on its nail by the window where it has been since before I came up the lane and I&#8217;m reminded again just how many people, how many losses this pack has seen. Annika is in the bed with her hair in one long braid that falls over one shoulder, letting another woman hold her wrist and count.</p><p>That&#8217;s the part that worries me. Yesterday she took a second helping in front of the whole kitchen to prove there was nothing the matter with her. This morning she lets Sera fuss.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><p>&#8220;Did you sleep?&#8221; Sera says.</p><p>&#8220;Some.&#8221;</p><p>Sera puts the wrist down and gets off the edge of the bed and takes the tray out of my hands before I&#8217;ve thought where to set it. &#8220;Well?&#8221; Annika says. &#8220;Go on and say it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;She&#8217;s tired, not dying.&#8221; Sera says it to me, not to her. &#8220;Off her feet until Thursday, and if that cough gets worse, we&#8217;re going to have to call the healer out from Slywood.&#8221; Slywood is presumably another pack, although not one I&#8217;m familiar with yet.</p><p>&#8220;You hear that?&#8221; Annika says with a scowl. &#8220;I really am fine.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I hear it,&#8221; I reply, since both of them seem to be waiting on me and the last place I want to be is in the middle of their argument.</p><p>Sera raises an eyebrow and shoots a look at Annika. &#8220;You&#8217;ll stay here and rest, then, and Katina can check on you while I get back to work.&#8221;</p><p>Torin comes as far as the door while Sera is telling me who to send for if the dizziness comes back. He&#8217;s dressed in his field clothes, the light behind him.</p><p>Annika arranges herself against the pillows. &#8220;I need you to do the stores this week,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Look in the pantry and decide what from the garden needs put by and what can go to market, and who&#8217;s short at the cottages and what they&#8217;re short of &#8212; they won&#8217;t tell you, so you&#8217;ll have to go and look. Kaleb&#8217;s roof wants doing before the snow and he&#8217;ll say he&#8217;ll see to it himself.&#8221; A breath. &#8220;Don&#8217;t send anything up here unless the house is on fire.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Alright.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;And after this week.&#8221; Her hands go flat on the quilt. &#8220;I want you standing where I stand. Not next year, not when I&#8217;m past it. You&#8217;ve had the half of it nobody else wanted since the spring and every soul in this house knows which half.&#8221;</p><p>My palms have gone damp. I put them into my apron and leave them there.</p><p>&#8220;Annika&#8212;&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not finished.&#8221; She looks past me at the door, at her nephew standing in it, and then back. &#8220;And tell Torin to make an honest woman of you while he&#8217;s at it. I haven&#8217;t got years to wait on his manners.&#8221;</p><p>Sera latches her basket and says nothing at all, and hears every word of it.</p><p>&#8220;It isn&#8217;t about the baby, and it isn&#8217;t for me,&#8221; Annika says. &#8220;Married to him you&#8217;re not a northerner. You&#8217;re his wife, and his Luna, and his mate. A pack hides a stranger. A pack stands in front of its own. It makes a difference, and I&#8217;d like it settled before the snow.&#8221;</p><p>I have my mouth open on some answer, and I don&#8217;t know yet which one, and I never find out.</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re tired,&#8221; Torin says from the door. &#8220;Rest. The work will keep.&#8221; And then, to me, already turning: &#8220;Kettle&#8217;s ready downstairs.&#8221;</p><p>He shuts the door gently behind him, and absolutely does not flee from the room.</p><p>Annika shuts her eyes with a sigh, and that tells me more than anything else about how she&#8217;s actually feeling.</p><p>&#8220;You shouldn&#8217;t pressure him like that.&#8221; I take the cup off the nightstand and put it back on the tray. &#8220;He&#8217;s had months to say, if he was interested. I don&#8217;t need another bond.&#8221;</p><p>Annika watches me over the edge of the quilt as I pull it up around her shoulder, and pretends to sleep as I gather up the breakfast things she&#8217;s barely touched.</p><p>I carry the tray down and make my own tea from the kettle that&#8217;s gotten hot while I was gone, and set the lists of what needs harvested or weeded today out on the table for Meissa. The apple strings want turning and I turn them. There&#8217;s no shortage of work to do, but I run out of chores in the kitchen by late morning, and decide after checking on Annika (sleeping again) that I can take the time to refill the waterers in the chicken coop.</p><p>Torin is at the fence line past the well at midday, the same place he was standing yesterday when he watched me buy needles off a trader like I&#8217;d done it a million times before. The fence of the goats&#8217; pasture never seems to stay mended for more than a few days at a time. He glances up as I walk out of the coop with my empty bucket, but says nothing.</p><p>I set the bucket down by the pump and I mean to go inside, and instead I walk down to the fence.</p><p>&#8220;She was talking to me,&#8221; I say.</p><p>&#8220;I know.&#8221; He feeds wire through the post and pulls it. &#8220;You went white.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been white since spring. It hasn&#8217;t stopped anyone else from talking to me.&#8221; He reaches for the pliers on the rail and I get there first and hold them, so he has to stop working and look at me. &#8220;You told me Vetter&#8217;s news was nothing. I stood at that basin and watched you pick which parts I got.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I told you nothing pointed here. It doesn&#8217;t.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not the same as nothing and you know it. You doubled the watch.&#8221; His jaw moves. He didn&#8217;t know I knew that. Danni talks while she hauls wash water, and I listen, because listening is the one thing I&#8217;ve never once stopped doing. &#8220;How long were you going to sit on the rest of it? Until the man walked up our lane?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You want to talk about sitting on things.&#8221; He isn&#8217;t loud. He takes the pliers out of my hand, not rough, just done waiting on them. &#8220;I was standing right here yesterday. You couldn&#8217;t breathe behind that wash line, and then you walked out the end of it like nothing happened.&#8221;</p><p>There&#8217;s nothing to do with my hands, so I stand there.</p><p>&#8220;You saw.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I saw the sheets stop moving, and you holding the line pole like the ground was going somewhere.&#8221; He drives the staple. One strike. &#8220;And then you bought needles and asked the man about his ducks, and at supper you passed me the bread. Sera knew. I had to learn it off her face this morning, in a doorway.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Sera asked me. You watched me through a sheet and mended fence.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Because you&#8217;d have hated it.&#8221; Now he&#8217;s loud. Not much, but from him it&#8217;s a shout. &#8220;If I&#8217;d crossed this yard you&#8217;d have stood up straighter and paid the man and hated me a week for seeing. Tell me that&#8217;s wrong.&#8221;</p><p>I can&#8217;t. That&#8217;s the trouble with him. So I go where it hurts instead.</p><p>&#8220;You decide what I can carry,&#8221; I say. &#8220;The news. The watch. Yesterday. This morning you decided I couldn&#8217;t even be asked a question in front of you. She wasn&#8217;t wrong, you&#8217;ve had months. So ask me. Ask me right now and find out what I say.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;No.&#8221;</p><p>It lands like a slap and he watches it land.</p><p>&#8220;Because if I ask you now, with that man two valleys over, I&#8217;ll never know what you said yes to.&#8221;</p><p>I have an answer. It has Moravec&#8217;s name in the middle of it, and if I say that name to him in anger I will never get it back. I put the pliers down on the rail between us and walk up to the house, and he lets me, and that is the worst part, that he lets me, because letting me is the same thing he&#8217;s been doing all along.</p><p>I get through the afternoon. The apple strings, the last tomatoes, Annika&#8217;s supper carried up and carried down again barely touched, and her too tired to even tell me the lists were wrong, which frightens me more than the cough. I sit with her until she sleeps. I don&#8217;t light my own lamp.</p><p>He comes up anyway. His knock is one knuckle, once, a question.</p><p>I open the door and he&#8217;s holding the last lamp from the kitchen. Nobody was at the foot of the stairs to hand it to him tonight.</p><p>&#8220;Marek&#8217;s whole message,&#8221; he says, before anything. &#8220;There&#8217;s a man asking after a woman traveling alone. Fair, young, on foot. He&#8217;s been through twice since spring, he pays for answers, and last time he asked what roads run east and who keeps the bridge. Nothing points here. Gregor&#8217;s on the ridge road, the watch is doubled, and that&#8217;s all of it. You&#8217;ll have anything new the day I get it.&#8221;</p><p>I stand back from the door and let him in. He sets the lamp on the shelf by the grimoires and stays standing, and I sit down on the end of the bed because I don&#8217;t trust my knees.</p><p>&#8220;The cellar, in the spring,&#8221; I say. &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a spell and it wasn&#8217;t a bond. My heart went wrong and I couldn&#8217;t breathe and I was sure I was dying under your floor, quietly, so your pack wouldn&#8217;t hear me. It&#8217;s happened since. The wash line was another one.&#8221; His face doesn&#8217;t move. &#8220;I thought it was the bond I broke, when I ran, but I was wrong. Sera told me two days ago when she realized it was happening. It&#8217;s fear &#8212; just fear. It lives in my own body, the reaction is real, but it&#8217;s based on memory, not necessarily truth.&#8221; I look at my hands. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t keep it from you to spite you. I hadn&#8217;t realized what it was yet.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;But now you know.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;More or less.&#8221; My eyes sting. &#8220;You get the same trade, though. How long?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Since the first hay went up.&#8221; No pause. He isn&#8217;t searching for any of it, and I understand he&#8217;s said all of this before, in a barn or on a road, to no one. &#8220;I told myself you&#8217;d had your fill of being bound to anyone and it would be cruel to ask. I decided that for you. Months, without asking you a thing. Then Vetter&#8217;s word came and it got worse, because now if you said yes I&#8217;d spend my life wondering if it was me you wanted or just somewhere safe. And the last one &#8212;&#8221; and there, finally, he slows down, &#8220;&#8212; I said your child could be a member of the pack without any obligation to you. I meant it. If I come asking now, you could think it was the rest of that. A place in the pack, doing right by you, in whatever old-fashioned sense Annika means.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Isn&#8217;t it?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;No.&#8221; Rough, fast, like it got away from him. &#8220;I want you. When we talk, it&#8217;s &#8212; you&#8217;re the other half of it. That&#8217;s all it is. It&#8217;s not for anyone&#8217;s good. But&#8230; that doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s not good for us. If we want it. If you want it.&#8221;</p><p>The lamp hisses. Downstairs someone is locking up, the bar on the front door slotting into place with a clunk.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not asking tonight,&#8221; he says. &#8220;When I do, you&#8217;ll know everything I know, and it&#8217;ll be a real question. You can do what you like with it.&#8221;</p><p>I don&#8217;t tell him what I&#8217;d do with it. I don&#8217;t fully know, and that&#8217;s alright too.</p><p>What I do is stand up and cross the floor and put both hands flat on his chest, and then take a fistful of his shirt, and not let go.</p><p>He goes still, checking, like he did with the trapdoor in his other hand.</p><p>&#8220;Stay,&#8221; I say.</p><p>His hands close over mine, and he looks at me long enough to be sure of what I&#8217;m asking, which is not everything. It&#8217;s this. &#8220;Alright,&#8221; he says, like I&#8217;ve asked him to bring in wood.</p><p>I&#8217;m the one who shuts the door. I&#8217;ve never done that with him on this side of it.</p><p>He sits on the edge of the bed to get his boots off, and it takes longer than it should because he keeps stopping, like a man expecting to be told he dreamed the instruction. I change behind the wardrobe door and he looks at the wall without being asked. When I turn down the lamp there&#8217;s a minute where neither of us knows how this is done, and then his weight comes down on the far side of the quilt and stays there, on his back, taking up as little of the bed as a man his size can manage.</p><p>I lie down next to him. He&#8217;s warm from a foot away.</p><p>&#8220;Your feet are cold,&#8221; he says, when one of them finds his shin.</p><p>&#8220;They&#8217;re always cold at night.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Mm.&#8221; He makes a soft noise, but doesn&#8217;t say anything more.</p><p>The house settles. A log shifts in the stove below us, and his breathing goes long before mine does, which I didn&#8217;t expect &#8212; that he&#8217;d sleep first, that easy. Or maybe that&#8217;s what it is. There&#8217;s nothing left in the room that either of us is carrying alone.</p><p>I lie awake beside him a while longer, because I can. Because the last time I slept within arm&#8217;s reach of a man I kept my back to a wall and one boot on.</p><p>I close my eyes on purpose. Low under everything, the flutter comes and goes, keeping its own time.</p><p>Torin stays.</p><p>Sometime in the dark his hand finds mine and closes around it. Each chapter will unlock here as soon as they are published on Inkitt.</p></blockquote><p>The Vetters drive up the lane in their truck &#8212; shinier and newer than the one the pack owns &#8212; while the dew is still on the grass, and nobody in the yard looks up twice.</p><p>I come up from the garden with a basket of the last tomatoes, and the gate latches behind me on the first try, the argument gone out of it. Marek Vetter, almost as old as Gregor, is at the tailgate with Torin and Gregor over sacks of seed wheat for the autumn sowing, talking over nothing. When I cross behind them the talk drops, and picks back up once I&#8217;m past. Nobody&#8217;s rude about it. It&#8217;s just quieter than neighbor talk needs to be.</p><p>Torin finds me that evening while I&#8217;m washing-up, looming over my shoulder like he lives there, which he does. &#8220;Marek Vetter passed the word,&#8221; he says. &#8220;There&#8217;s questions being asked, two valleys over about strangers on the roads &#8212; who&#8217;s new, who&#8217;s passing through.&#8221; He takes the pot from me and dries it. &#8220;Nothing pointing this direction.&#8221;</p><p>Every word of it is level, but level isn&#8217;t what&#8217;s coming off him. I fold the towel in my hands and look at him sideways.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><p>There&#8217;s a second question behind the ones he answered &#8212; how much closer is two valleys over than it was in the spring. I put my towel on the rail and ask about the hay instead, and his shoulder stays against mine at the basin while he tells me.</p><p>The tinker&#8217;s van comes up the lane two days later, and for one breath the yard goes still &#8212; an engine nobody was expecting, every head up, Gregor&#8217;s hand on the fence rail &#8212; and then it&#8217;s the rattle everybody knows, the loose door, the tired axle, and the stillness breaks up into kids running.</p><p>The little ones have the back doors open before he&#8217;s set the brake, heading straight for the drawer where he keeps whistles and other trinket-toys. Gregor walks a slow circle around the van and asks after the axle that got repaired in the courtyard last spring like it&#8217;s kin. Annika comes out with her apron still on and her arms crossed, and names the year he charged her double for new pans, and he names the year she paid him in eggs that were half duck and half goose, and they settle in to haggle like they do every year. The wares come out on the tailgate &#8212; needles and thread, pans, the grinding wheel for whoever brings knives, a card of ribbon and trim the girls circle twice without looking at it.</p><p>I&#8217;m at the lines behind the house with the second wash of sheets, in the sun, close enough to hear all of it.</p><p>Then he calls a greeting over the gate, asking after the mistress of the house, and the vowels come through the sheets before the words do, and the vowels are wrong, the vowels are from home, from the north, and the pegs are suddenly very far away and so is the yard and so is the summer, and the sheet in front of me goes bright and flat like the light changed, and my heart is doing the thing it does and there&#8217;s no crate under me this time and no dark, just sun and clean linen and my own body deciding, without asking me, that we are back there.</p><p>I pin the sheet. I pin the next one. My hands keep working while the sheets swell and fall in the wind, and on the other side of the white a whistle shrieks and a child laughs and the haggling goes on, and none of it is any farther away than it ever was, whatever my body says.</p><p>It passes, and it passes faster than the cellar did, and I stay on my feet for all of it. That part lands later, when the basket&#8217;s empty and my shoulders come down from around my ears.</p><p>I walk out around the end of the line and buy a paper packet of needles off the tailgate with a level voice and the right coins. Nobody would have had anything to look at me for that.</p><p>Torin is at the fence line past the well. The new wire is coiled and finished over his shoulder, and he isn&#8217;t going anywhere with it. His hand stays closed on the coil. He&#8217;s watching me.</p><p>We look at each other for the space of one breath. Then I carry my needles into the kitchen, and he turns back to a fence that&#8217;s already mended, and at supper neither of us says one word about any of it.</p><p>Sera sits herself down next to me while I&#8217;m cutting apples the next morning, out on the porch bench where the drying strings are going up, and works in silence long enough that I stop waiting for her to talk. Then, to the apples: &#8220;You went still while you were hanging the laundry yesterday. When the tinker came. Are you alright?&#8221;</p><p>There&#8217;s no good answer, so I give her the honest one. &#8220;It&#8217;s what&#8217;s left of the bond.&#8221; It&#8217;s the name I&#8217;ve had for it since the winter. &#8220;His&#8212;&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;It isn&#8217;t.&#8221; She doesn&#8217;t look up. &#8220;This isn&#8217;t a bond. This isn&#8217;t magic. It&#8217;s what fear does to a body that&#8217;s had too much of it. It gets better.&#8221;</p><p>The knife gets through another apple. The hens complain about nothing down the yard.</p><p>&#8220;The cellar took an afternoon,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Yesterday took a quarter hour, and you kept your feet, and then you went and bought needles. Say it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;It was shorter. It was less.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;It gets better.&#8221; She takes the next apple out of my basket like we&#8217;ve been discussing the weather. &#8220;Tell him or don&#8217;t. That&#8217;s yours to decide.&#8221;</p><p>We cut apples until the first string is full. By then I&#8217;ve folded the morning up small and put it away with the rest of what I carry &#8212; and it&#8217;s a choice now, she made sure of that, and I make it anyway.</p><p>Evening comes on warm. Torin&#8217;s out with the hay crew at the far field and the kitchen is full of its ordinary traffic &#8212; Meissa peeling vegetables at the board, Danni in and out with stove wood, Annika and me shoulder to shoulder at the pots.</p><p>Annika turns from the stove with the long spoon still in her hand and sits down on the bench like the floor tilted under her. Not a fall. A sit &#8212; hard, sudden, the spoon upright in her fist like she means to go on using it from there.</p><p>The kitchen stops. Annika doesn&#8217;t. &#8220;Stir that,&#8221; she says. &#8220;Before it catches.&#8221;</p><p>The spoon is out of her hand and into mine and the pot is off the heat before any of the rest of me has caught up. &#8220;Meissa &#8212; water for her. Danni, the far field, tell Torin.&#8221; Phillip is in the doorway with an armload of wood, and the wood is already down. &#8220;The cottages,&#8221; I say. &#8220;Tell Sera.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You will do no such thing.&#8221; Annika, from the bench, furious, gray around the mouth. &#8220;It&#8217;s the heat and the standing, and the potatoes don&#8217;t care that I sat down.&#8221;</p><p>Phillip is already gone &#8212; out the door on my word before hers finished, and a small back part of me puts that away for later.</p><p>The kitchen comes back to work. Meissa brings the water and Annika drinks it, because refusing would be more fuss than taking it, and then she runs the supper from the bench &#8212; the salt, the bread, whether the little ones have washed. Her voice is all hers. Her hands aren&#8217;t. They won&#8217;t lie flat on her knees.</p><p>The kids&#8217; eyes keep going from Annika to me and back, and then, somewhere in the work, they stop going back.</p><p>Meissa lights the lamps. Out past the well the cottage path is going dark, and Annika tells me the stew wants salt, and she&#8217;s right, and I salt it.</p><p>And we wait.</p><p>Sera comes up the cottage path huffing and puffing before a quarter hour has even passed, Phillip running ahead of her carrying her basket. She sets it on the table, looks at Annika&#8217;s face and then her hands, and holds her wrist a while like she&#8217;s got nowhere better to be.</p><p>&#8220;Well?&#8221; Annika says, daring her.</p><p>&#8220;Nothing that wants worrying about tonight.&#8221; Sera lets the wrist go. &#8220;If you sit when you&#8217;re told and let the girls do the carrying for a few days. I&#8217;ll look at you again in the morning.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You hear that?&#8221; Annika tells the kitchen at large. &#8220;Fuss over nothing. Meissa &#8212; the bread&#8217;s done, take it out.&#8221;</p><p>Sera doesn&#8217;t argue. She takes the chair by the stove and gets out her wool, in no hurry at all about leaving.</p><p>Torin comes in fast enough a few minutes later that the door bangs, field dust still on him, Danni a step behind. What he finds is the Luna arguing the salt with me from the bench, Sera making tea, and the rest of the pack that&#8217;s on kitchen duty alternating between getting supper on the table and eavesdropping. He stands in the doorway getting his breath back while the kitchen goes on around him, and the question he doesn&#8217;t ask gets answered anyway, by the bread and the bowls and Annika telling him to wash before he sits.</p><p>We eat. Annika takes a second helping to make a point, and nobody argues with it.</p><p>Under the table, Torin&#8217;s knee comes to rest against mine, and stays.</p><div class="callout-block" data-callout="true"><p>Katina's story is just beginning. Somewhere between the bread and the mustard I finish the arithmetic I&#8217;ve been doing for two days.</p><p>He&#8217;s free to go. I freed him myself &#8212; three strokes through the orders I wrote a month and a lifetime ago. And I can&#8217;t regret it. What&#8217;s left is the renewal on the twenty-fifth: his life, every new moon, only from my hands. There&#8217;s a woman who would use that. I know her handwriting. I tore her out of this book myself. </p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><p>He sits down at the card table in a folding chair, shaking his hands to dry them off, and I set his plate in front of him. There&#8217;s a sentence that would end all of this, and I take one breath with it on my tongue, and let it go out with the breath.</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;re going,&#8221; I say. &#8220;So we&#8217;re doing it right.&#8221;</p><p>He looks at me for a second. Then he picks up the sandwich and eats.</p><p>&#8220;Alright,&#8221; he says, halfway through. &#8220;We&#8217;ve got nine.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Nine?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Days.&#8221;</p><p>He goes back to the sandwich. I eat mine, and the ventilation hums, and that&#8217;s the entire conversation.</p><div><hr></div><p>After we finish, I clear the plates and bring back the book and the pencil stub.</p><p>&#8220;Why are you using a pencil?&#8221; he says. &#8220;You never do that.&#8221;</p><p>I hadn&#8217;t realized he noticed. &#8220;It&#8217;s not a spell.&#8221;</p><p>I open to a fresh page and date it. He pulls his chair around so we&#8217;re next to each other instead of across, and I half-turn the book so he can read it.</p><p>&#8220;Tell me the shape of it again,&#8221; I say. &#8220;Four weeks?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Four weeks. Silas says whoever they keep takes first oaths in the fall.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;And you leave here the morning of the fourteenth.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Check-in&#8217;s that afternoon. I&#8217;d want to be on the road by eight.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;So somewhere in the middle of all that,&#8221; I say, &#8220;there&#8217;s the twenty-fifth.&#8221;</p><p>He frowns. Then I watch him count.</p><p>&#8220;The renewal,&#8221; he says.</p><p>&#8220;New moon. You won&#8217;t have been there quite two weeks.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Eleven days in.&#8221; He looks at the fresh page like it got longer. &#8220;I should have counted that.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You had other numbers.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You&#8217;ll know the grounds by then. Fences, gates, what nights look like. When you know where you&#8217;ll be, you text me.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;And you drive up?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Yeah.&#8221; I keep the pencil moving. &#8220;When do you think Silas will tell you the location?&#8221;</p><p>Robin shrugs. &#8220;There&#8217;s no reason to keep it secret, he probably just hasn&#8217;t thought of it. It&#8217;s got to be at one of the retreat camps we&#8217;ve had events at before, though. How long do you need, once you&#8217;re there?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Ten minutes, maybe fifteen just to be careful.&#8221; I write <em>Church camps</em> on the page with a question mark.</p><p>&#8220;What do you need on your end?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll bring the supplies, they&#8217;re all things I keep on hand. On your part, I just need you, holding still.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I know how to do that.&#8221; He watches me write all of it down. &#8220;I&#8217;ll be able to text every night,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Nothing fancy. If a night goes by with no text, that&#8217;s your signal.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Signal to what?&#8221;</p><p>He doesn&#8217;t answer that, and I write it anyway: <em>Texts nightly. No text = wrong.</em></p><p>&#8220;If they take the phones &#8212;&#8221; I start.</p><p>&#8220;They won&#8217;t. It&#8217;s a lodge training camp, not jail.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t know that.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I know Silas. Lights out, cabin inspections, and no drinking or smoking. That&#8217;s the worst of it.&#8221;</p><p>I write <em>phones</em> in the margin anyway, with a question mark. He even lets me have the question mark without commenting on it.</p><p>&#8220;Now the part you won&#8217;t like,&#8221; I say.</p><p><em>Miss the renewal window: leave. Don&#8217;t wait to be sure.</em></p><p>&#8220;Define miss,&#8221; he says.</p><p>&#8220;If I can&#8217;t reach you on the twenty-fifth, that&#8217;s missed. Not the twenty-sixth. Not close. The twenty-fifth. The Hollowing doesn&#8217;t care if it was an accident and it won&#8217;t matter what you find out if you&#8217;re dead.&#8221; It&#8217;s blunt and I keep the wince off my face as I say the words.</p><p>He nods. I write the next safety item.</p><p><em>If anybody touches your chest or stares and goes quiet: leave.</em></p><p>&#8220;People hug,&#8221; he says.</p><p>&#8220;You know what I mean. Like Esther did. If something feels wrong, you walk.&#8221;</p><p>He thinks about the parking lot in Barstow, or I think about it for both of us. He nods again.</p><p>&#8220;And I don&#8217;t need an excuse to walk. Lay brothers leave. It&#8217;s allowed.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Silas will hate it.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Silas &#8212;&#8221; his jaw works and he swallows hard. &#8220;Silas is wrong. He can hate it. I don&#8217;t care.&#8221;</p><p>I write <em>no excuse needed</em> at the end of the list and pretend I don&#8217;t hear what&#8217;s in his voice.</p><p>&#8220;My turn for terms,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Write this one. If the twenty-fifth can&#8217;t happen safe &#8212; you stay home.&#8221;</p><p>I put the pencil down. &#8220;No.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Clarity &#8212;&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;You wrote yours, you let me write mine. It doesn&#8217;t matter how the twenty-fifth goes. I come anyway, and we&#8217;re careful.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not agreeing to that.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Then we&#8217;re even.&#8221;</p><p>The line where his term would go stays empty. We both look at it for a while. Nobody picks the pencil up.</p><p>&#8220;This isn&#8217;t a plan,&#8221; he says.</p><p>&#8220;So how do we make it one?&#8221; I say. He doesn&#8217;t answer. I don&#8217;t either.</p><p>We stay where we are, both on the same side of the table, the hole on the page between us.</p><div><hr></div><p>He goes up to stow the tools. I wash the two plates and set them in the rack.</p><p>The book stays where it is, open on the card table, the pencil lying in the crease. The page is dated. His words in my handwriting, most of a plan, one line near the bottom still empty.</p><p>We leave it like that. Torin and I work down opposite sides of the row with twine and cut stakes, tying the runners up off the ground before the pods rot where they touch the dirt. My back doesn&#8217;t bend where it used to, so I take the tying and he takes the driving of stakes, and we trade off up the row without talking about it, the mallet keeping time.</p><p>We haven&#8217;t said one word about the kiss, and it&#8217;s been six days now. I keep waiting for the silence to curdle into a thing we have to step around, and it keeps not doing it. He hands me twine before I ask for it. I hold the stake plumb while he drives it. Yesterday he brought two cups of water out at midday and we drank them standing in the dirt and talked about the fence in the low field, and nothing else, but the feeling it left me with lasted me the rest of the day.</p><div class="paywall-jump" data-component-name="PaywallToDOM"></div><div><hr></div><p>Midmorning, a few days later, the brown goat catches Phillip behind the knees while he&#8217;s refilling the hay feeders and puts him in the trough, flakes of hay and all. The yelling brings half the yard. Torin doesn&#8217;t look up from his stake. &#8220;She waited till he had both hands full,&#8221; he says. &#8220;That&#8217;s a year of planning.&#8221;</p><p>The laugh gets out of me before I can do anything about it &#8212; loud, the real one, the one nobody at Ironholt has heard yet. He goes on to the next stake with his ears turning red, and I&#8217;d bet the garden he&#8217;s filing it away with weather signs and which wire holds: whatever works gets kept.</p><p>By noon the row of beans is attached to their new scaffolding, and we eat bread and cheese that Annika sent out in the shade of the wall, and he tells me which fields go to hay first and I tell him which of the kitchen herbs came up wrong, and none of it is anything that couldn&#8217;t wait, and neither of us hurries it.</p><p>When the row is done he pulls me up off the milking stool I&#8217;ve been dragging along behind me, both hands, careful of the belly, and when the pulling-up is finished neither of us gets around to letting go. We walk up to the yard like that, my hand in his at four in the afternoon where anyone can see it. Danni is hauling wash water at the pump. She looks at our hands, smirks like she&#8217;s caught us at something, and goes back to filling her bucket, and my hand stays where it is the rest of the walk in.</p><div><hr></div><p>The first cutting of hay goes up into the loft, and the beans climb their stakes like they invented the idea, and somewhere in those weeks Annika&#8217;s needle lets my dresses out without a word passing between us.</p><p>The chair is at my place on an ordinary evening, no occasion to it anywhere.</p><p>My place. Somewhere across the spring my spot on the bench stopped being wherever there was room and settled into one spot, and the spot has been drifting up the table, meal by meal, until I&#8217;m at Torin&#8217;s left hand and nobody could point to the actual day when it happened. I grew up watching this done with place cards and seating charts and dowager aunts. Annika does it with nothing but time and the plain assumption that nobody will be fool enough to comment.</p><p>Tonight the bench where I sit has been pushed down the long table, and a chair stands in the same space &#8212; a chair with arms, a back, and a smooth seat set a handswidth higher than the bench so a woman six months along can get out of it again without hauling on the table.</p><p>Nobody says one word. Torin is deep in a conversation with Gregor about the field fence that neither of them is listening to. Annika ladles stew like the furniture has always been this shape. Meissa passes me the bread without looking up from her own plate, and down the table Danni is retelling the goat story with additions; the trough gets deeper (and Phillip gets wetter) with every telling.</p><p>Under the table noise the room sits easy. Annika&#8217;s satisfaction is dry and folded like her linens. Down at Kaleb&#8217;s end the old grief is there, banked to coals, nothing flaring off it tonight.</p><p>I sit down. The chair takes me and the baby both like it was measured for the job. I pick up my spoon and eat my supper and let things alone.</p><div><hr></div><p>The second cutting of hay is in before the summer stops getting ahead of me &#8212; the yard baked hard by midmorning, the baby kicking hard enough now to be seen through my apron when I sit still.</p><p>Thursday is washing day, and Phillip is holding the pump handle filling the cistern for Sera to fill the kettles from when I come out for the kitchen water. He stays at the handle, which has been true for a few weeks now. The not-talking has been true longer.</p><p>He fills my pail first. Then, with his eyes on the spout: &#8220;Would you have told us? If nobody had ever come looking.&#8221;</p><p>There&#8217;s a version of the answer that lands soft. I gave him one of those at this pump in the spring, and I&#8217;ve been paying against it since.</p><p>&#8220;Some of it,&#8221; I say. &#8220;In time. Whatever would keep you all alive if the wrong wolves came &#8212; what to run from, which direction. My name I&#8217;d have kept. Him too.&#8221; The handle slows under his hands. &#8220;I was choosing for all of you what you could carry. You most. You asked me to my face and I still chose.&#8221;</p><p>He looks at me then, a long look, and whatever comes off him has changed shape since spring &#8212; smaller, worn rounder at the edges, not aimed at me anymore.</p><p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not a no,&#8221; he says.</p><p>&#8220;No. It isn&#8217;t.&#8221;</p><p>The handle picks its rhythm back up. He fills the second pail, lifts it clear of the trough, and hands it over with the handle turned so it comes to my grip dry. I&#8217;m three steps toward the kitchen when he says, &#8220;Did you have chores? Up there.&#8221;</p><p>I turn around. He&#8217;s got his eyes on the water, fifteen from his boots up.</p><p>&#8220;No. Lessons. Dancing masters.&#8221; I move the pail to my other hand. &#8220;It&#8217;s not better.&#8221;</p><p>He makes half a sound, the front end of a snort, and the pump keeps working, and I carry the water in.</p><div><hr></div><p>Torin has taken to walking me up to my room at night. It started with a hand at the stairs the week my balance went strange and turned into a habit neither of us has said out loud, and by now the house runs on it &#8212; Annika hands him the last lamp without being asked, and whatever&#8217;s left in his cup gets finished standing. The stairs take longer than they used to. He matches me without making a point of it, one step below, near enough to catch and far enough not to hover.</p><p>Warm night, windows open below, the yard already dark. At my door he reaches past me and turns the hall lamp low, and I put my hand flat on his chest and come up and kiss him.</p><p>It starts like the first one, soft, a question already answered. It doesn&#8217;t stay soft. His hand comes up my arm and over my shoulder, mine gets a fist of his shirt, my back finds the doorframe, and the sleeping house is one floor down and nothing in the world is coming up those stairs to stop us.</p><p>We stop.</p><p>Both at once &#8212; his forehead comes down to rest against mine, my fist lets go of his shirt and smooths it flat, and we stand there breathing while his thumb moves along my shoulder. No sound on the stairs, no voice below, just the two of us choosing it, slow and on purpose, each of us knowing the other chose it too.</p><p>He straightens. &#8220;Garden gate&#8217;s dropping on its hinge,&#8221; he says, rough, like his voice had to come back from somewhere. &#8220;I&#8217;ll take it off after milking. You shouldn&#8217;t be fighting it with your arms full.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Goodnight, Torin.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;Goodnight.&#8221;</p><p>His boots go down the stairs, taking their time about it.</p><p>In the room I set the lamp on the shelf beside the grimoires and get ready for bed slow, because everything is slow now. The baby rolls over when I lie down, one long turn, a heel or an elbow dragging past like a fish under ice. Below me his tread crosses the kitchen, the stove door opens and shuts, the bar drops on the back door. The quilt is warm from the day.</p><p>The baby settles when the house does.
