I disagree. I don’t believe there is such a thing as being overdressed. I do, however, believe there is such a thing as dressing without regard for the occasion. Those are not the same thing. There is a difference between honoring yourself and ignoring your environment.

You can arrive looking elegant at a casual brunch. You can wear a tailored blazer to the airport. You can carry a Chanel Classic Flap to the grocery store if that’s what makes you feel like yourself. None of those choices are offensive. They’re simply an expression of your personal standard.

Where people get confused is when they mistake effort for excess.

A woman who takes pride in her appearance isn’t trying to outshine everyone else. She’s simply refusing to negotiate with her own standards.

I’ve never believed in shrinking to make other people comfortable. But I do believe in reading the room. That means understanding context.

A black-tie gala deserves a different expression of elegance than a board meeting. A funeral calls for reverence, not fashion statements. A volunteer workday isn’t the place for stilettos and sequins. Being appropriate is a form of respect, for the event, for the people hosting it, and for the moment itself.

Appropriate doesn’t mean ordinary. Appropriate doesn’t mean invisible. Appropriate simply means your appearance supports the occasion rather than competing with it.

The women I admire understand this instinctively. They don’t chase attention. They cultivate presence. Their clothes never enter the room before they do. Instead, their appearance quietly reinforces who they are: thoughtful, intentional, confident, and self-aware. That is elegance.

Some people assume that dressing well is about labels, trends, or price tags. It isn’t. It’s about alignment.

Does your appearance reflect the level of care you have for yourself? Does it communicate respect for where you’re going? Does it allow people to focus on what you have to say instead of wondering why you’re dressed for an entirely different event?

Those are better questions than, “Am I overdressed?”

There have been times when I realized I was one of the more dressed people in the room. I wasn't embarrassed. I also wasn't trying to make anyone else feel small. I was simply dressed in a way that reflected my values. I believe showing up well is a form of gratitude, for opportunities, for relationships, and for the life I’ve been given.

We often tell women to “dress for the job you want.” I’d go a step further. Dress for the woman you are … you’re becoming. Not because you’re trying to impress strangers, but because every time you honor your own standard, you reinforce your own identity. You teach yourself who you are.

So no, I don’t believe in being overdressed. I believe in being intentional. I believe in knowing the difference between making an entrance and making a distraction. And I believe the most elegant women are the ones who never ask permission to be polished. They simply make sure their polish is appropriate for the moment.

That isn’t overdressed. That’s self-respect dressed beautifully.

Many of us grew up hearing those words from our parents. Sometimes they were entirely appropriate. Parents are responsible for protecting their children, and not every decision is open for negotiation. There are moments when authority must simply be exercised.

The workplace, however, is different.

Somewhere along the way, too many leaders unconsciously adopt the same mindset. The title changes. The office gets larger. The responsibilities increase. Yet the expectation remains that people should comply simply because the request comes from someone higher in the organizational chart.

The reality is that organizations are not families, and employees are not children. They are professionals. They bring experience, ideas, judgment, and perspective to their work. They want to understand the purpose behind decisions, not because they are being difficult, but because they want to contribute meaningfully. Asking “why” is often a sign of engagement, not defiance.

One of the greatest misconceptions about leadership is the belief that becoming an executive automatically makes people willing to follow you. It doesn’t.

A title grants authority. It defines your role, your responsibilities, and your decision-making power. Influence, however, is something entirely different. It cannot be assigned by a board, written into an employment agreement, or announced in an organizational chart. Influence is earned over time through credibility, consistency, humility, competence, and the way you treat people every single day.

There is an important distinction between authority and influence. Authority can require compliance. Influence inspires commitment. People may do what you ask because your position requires them to, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they trust your leadership or believe in your vision. Compliance may accomplish today’s task, but commitment is what sustains organizations through challenges, uncertainty, and change.

When leaders rely primarily on positional authority, something subtle begins to happen within an organization. Employees become more cautious about sharing ideas. They stop asking thoughtful questions because questioning is interpreted as resistance. Innovation slows because people conclude that their opinions are neither welcomed nor valued. Eventually, they disengage, not because they no longer care about the organization’s mission, but because they have learned that their voice carries little weight.

Ironically, these same organizations often express a desire for innovation, accountability, and ownership. Yet those qualities flourish only in environments where people feel psychologically safe enough to think independently, challenge assumptions respectfully, and contribute their best ideas. Leaders who confuse respectful dialogue with insubordination often create the very culture they are trying to avoid.

Throughout my career, I have met remarkable leaders who held relatively modest titles but possessed extraordinary influence. People sought their counsel, respected their judgment, and willingly followed them because they had earned trust. I have also encountered executives with impressive titles whose authority was unquestioned, yet whose teams would have left at the first opportunity. The difference was never intelligence or experience. It was leadership.

Respect is not attached to a business card. It is built one conversation, one decision, and one relationship at a time. The leaders people remember are rarely those who reminded everyone of their position. They are the ones who listened carefully, communicated clearly, admitted when they were wrong, gave credit generously, and treated others with dignity regardless of their title.

Perhaps the most important question every executive should ask is not, Did they do what I asked? Instead, ask, Why did they do it? Did they follow because they believed in the direction you were taking them, or because they feared the consequences of saying no? If your title disappeared tomorrow, would people still choose to follow your leadership?

Those are uncomfortable questions, but they reveal the difference between managing through authority and leading through influence.

A title may open the door to leadership, but it does not guarantee that anyone will walk through it with you. The executives who leave the greatest legacy understand that leadership is never about saying, “Because I said so.” It is about creating a vision so compelling, relationships so strong, and trust so deep that people willingly choose to follow.

That is the kind of leadership our organizations need today. Not leadership that demands obedience, but leadership that earns commitment.

I think every one of us has one of those things.

For the longest time, I believed that if I waited long enough, the decision would become easier. That eventually I’d wake up one morning feeling completely certain, completely confident, completely ready.

That day rarely comes.

I’ve noticed something about myself. Whenever I find myself thinking about the same issue over and over again, it’s usually because I already know what I need to do. I’m not looking for the right answer anymore. I’m hoping for an easier answer.

Most of the time, there isn’t one.

What I’ve learned instead is that peace doesn’t come from avoiding difficult decisions. Peace comes after we’ve made them. The moment we stop carrying something around in our minds, we free up energy for everything else that matters.

That’s true whether you’re leading an organization, raising a family, building a business, ending a relationship, or simply trying to become a better version of yourself.

Avoiding the hard thing has a cost.

It costs us sleep because our minds keep returning to the same unfinished business. It costs us confidence because every day we delay, we quietly reinforce the idea that we’re not capable of handling what’s in front of us. And it costs us opportunities because while we’re waiting to feel ready, life keeps moving.

Ironically, the hard thing is almost never as difficult as living with the anticipation of it.

I’ve also realized that doing hard things isn’t really about courage. It’s about trust.

Every difficult conversation you have. Every healthy boundary you set. Every decision you make, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed, becomes evidence that you can trust yourself. And self-trust is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself because it changes the way you move through the world.

You stop second-guessing every decision. You stop asking everyone else what they think before listening to yourself. You stop waiting for permission. Instead, you begin acting from conviction rather than certainty.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign, let this be it. Have the conversation you’ve been avoiding. Make the decision you’ve already made in your heart. Set the boundary you’ve been explaining away. Submit the application. Walk away from what’s already over. Start the project you’ve been talking about for months.

Don’t wait until it feels easy. Do it because you know it’s right. Don’t wait for certainty. Act on conviction.

And every time we chooses courage over comfort, we trust ourselves even more.

We shrink our accomplishments. We downplay our joy. We minimize our milestones. Someone compliments us and we deflect. “Oh this old thing.” “It was nothing.” “I just threw something together.” “It’s not that serious.”

But if someone we loved did the very same thing, we would celebrate them loudly. We would hype them up. Toast them. Tell everyone how proud we are. So why do we reduce the importance of our own lives?

The Quiet Habit of Making Ourselves Small |

For many women, it was learned early.

Be humble. Be gracious. Don’t brag. Don’t draw attention to yourself. None of those lessons were meant to erase you. But somewhere along the way, humility became minimization. Confidence became something we apologize for. And celebration became something reserved for other people. We learned how to make ourselves smaller in rooms we worked very hard to enter.

Your Life Is Not “Just” |

Listen carefully to the language we sometimes use.

I’m just hosting something small. It’s just a little project. It’s just something I’m trying.

That tiny word carries weight. Because when you say “just,” you quietly signal that what you’re doing doesn’t deserve attention. But the truth is, every meaningful life is made up of moments exactly like that.

The dinner. The idea. The gathering. The risk. The effort no one saw.

There is nothing “just” about building a life.

Stop Downplaying What You Built |

The career you worked for. The relationships you nurture. The home you created. The resilience it took to become the woman you are today. None of that is small. Even the things that feel normal to you now were once dreams, goals, or prayers.

We often forget that. Because we get used to our own lives. But normal does not mean insignificant.

Expand Into Your Own Story |

What would happen if you stopped shrinking your moments? If you allowed yourself to fully acknowledge them? Not in arrogance. Not for validation. But simply in truth.

You hosted a beautiful evening. You made something meaningful. You reached a new level. You handled something with grace.

Let that be real. Let that count.

Celebrate Yourself the Way You Celebrate Others |

Think about how generous you are with praise when it comes to the people you love. You notice details. You compliment them. You acknowledge their effort.

For those unfamiliar, the Divine Nine refers to the nine historically Black Greek Letter Organizations that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated; and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated.

Over the years, I’ve heard nearly every critique imaginable about the Divine Nine.

D9 organizations are elitist.
D9 organizations are/were colorist.
D9 organizations no longer serve a purpose.
D9 organizations are social clubs masquerading as service organizations.

These critiques surface with regularity, and more recently more outwardly, often spoken confidently, sometimes casually and dismissive, and frequently without historical context or lived experience.

I contend otherwise.

The Divine Nine were not created for popularity, aesthetics, or access. They were born of necessity. Of exclusion. Of urgency. Of vision. They were founded during a time when Black excellence had to be organized, protected, and intentionally cultivated because no one else was going to do it for us.

The Divine Nine were never meant to be everything to everyone. They were designed to create safe spaces, serve Black communities, prepare leaders, and build continuity across generations of Black excellence, work that has long shown up in classrooms, voting booths, boardrooms, community centers, and policy spaces, often without fanfare or recognition.

And longevity matters.

The Divine Nine traces its roots back to 1906, when Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated was founded at Cornell University. That origin story matters. It reminds us that Black Greek Letter Organizations were established not only at Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs), but also at Ivy League institutions and predominantly white campuses, often in spaces where Black students were isolated, excluded, or navigating hostile environments. From the beginning, these organizations took root wherever Black students were, creating structure, support, and leadership pipelines that have endured for generations.

Yes, we chant.
We sing.
We stroll, hop, shimmy, and step.
We wear our colors, letters, and symbols boldly.
We know our calls.
We tease one another’s respective organizations, sometimes mercilessly.

That visibility is often what people see first, and sometimes all they choose to see.

But beneath the pageantry is something far more enduring.

There is also something deeply important about fraternal and sororal relationships that rarely gets named. These bonds were not formed simply for social connection, but for survival, accountability, and collective advancement. In spaces where Black students were often isolated or marginalized, these relationships created networks of support that extended well beyond college years. They became places where leadership was sharpened, responsibility was modeled, and expectations were reinforced.

Sisterhood and brotherhood in the D9 are not passive. They are relationships that require actively showing up, holding one another to standards, and understanding that individual success is tied to collective responsibility. These bonds endure through careers, families, loss, joy, and service, creating continuity that few institutions can replicate.

That truth is personal for me. I am not the only Greek in my family. My father is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. My husband and my son are members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. My daughter, sister, and cousins are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. And my dearest friends in the world span the full spectrum of the Divine Nine. These relationships are not symbolic, they are lived, sustained, and deeply intertwined with how we lead, serve, and show up for one another.

The rituals, the traditions, the camaraderie, and yes, the rivalries, are not distractions from the work. They are part of what sustains it. They build belonging. They create continuity. They remind us that we are connected to something older than ourselves and accountable to something beyond the moment.

At the end of the strolls and the songs, the service remains. The mentoring continues. The scholarships are funded. The programs are delivered. The leadership is cultivated.

Yes, we will gather in celebration, especially on days like this, but it is almost always celebration with purpose. This evening my chapter, the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter, is celebrating Founders Day with intention by collecting feminine hygiene products to support our menstrual equity project, ensuring dignity, access, and care for women and girls who need it most. This is just one small, tangible example of the measurable and impactful service that happens consistently across the D9, work that is often quiet, sustained, and deeply rooted in community need.

That balance, celebration and substance, joy and responsibility, identity and impact, is not accidental. It is what has allowed the D9 to endure, to evolve, and to remain relevant across generations.

The D9 is not perfect. No institution is, but imperfection does not dim our purpose. We have evolved since our founding, but much of our strength lies in our legacy, and critique from afar, without understanding context, rarely tells our full story.

The D9 is often talked about as tradition, but it has always been about responsibility. It has been about preparing people to lead, to serve, and to understand that individual achievement was never meant to stand alone.

And it is still at work, whether acknowledged or not.

Today my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, marks 113 years of sisterhood, service, scholarship, social action, and might I add, substance and style. Longevity like that does not happen by accident. It happens because the work has mattered, because those 22 beautiful founders had a vision, our mission has endured, and because each generation has carried it forward with intention.

Happy Founders Day, my beautiful sorors. Here’s to 113 more years!

“How would you describe your brand?”

I smiled, because the honest answer is a little layered.

I love beauty and fashion. Truly. Trends, textures, lipstick shades (red for me), styling high and low, all of it. I enjoy the play of it the same way most women do. It’s fun. It’s expressive. It’s part of how I move through the world.

And at the same time, I’m very aware of how those same things shape presence, how I show up, how I’m received, and how I feel in my own skin.

Two things can be true.

Beauty Can Be Playful and Purposeful |

Sometimes beauty is just beauty. A great outfit. A new product. A look that makes you feel good for no reason at all.

And sometimes, those same choices quietly do more. They help you feel grounded before a meeting. They give you confidence walking into unfamiliar rooms. They remind you of who you are when life feels loud. That’s not strategy in a cold sense. It’s awareness.

Presence Isn’t About Taking the Fun Out of It |

I’m not interested in turning beauty or fashion into a performance review. But I do believe there is an appropriate way to dress, and that context matters. Different rooms ask different things of us, and awareness is part of presence, not a restriction on it.

There are moments when dressing to impress is not only natural, but smart. Intentional even. Wanting to be well received, respected, or remembered doesn’t mean you’re out of alignment, it often means you understand the setting you’re in.

What interests me is how style shifts when it becomes a conscious choice instead of a default one. When you dress with both yourself and the moment in mind. When you enjoy beauty and fashion fully, while also using them to support your energy, posture, confidence, and focus. That’s not about losing joy. That’s about directing it.

How I Think About It |

For me, presence isn’t about being serious. It’s about being intentional without being rigid. I can love a trend and still choose what actually works for me. I can mix high and low without losing my sense of self. I can enjoy beauty as play, and still understand its power. That’s the intersection I live in.

This isn’t about rules. It’s not about elevating yourself out of pleasure. And it’s definitely not about dressing for anyone else.

It’s about enjoying beauty and fashion fully, while also recognizing how they help us arrive in rooms a little more grounded, a little more confident, a little more present.

Because loving beautiful things doesn’t make you shallow.And being thoughtful about how you show up doesn’t make you rigid.

Two things can be true.

How to Use Beauty and Fashion to Amplify Presence |

Choose one anchor, not a full performance. Presence sharpens when there’s a clear focal point, a great lip, a strong jacket, a beautiful shoe. One intentional choice reads confident. Too many competing statements dilute impact.

Dress for the room before you dress for the mirror. Presence is relational. Ask what this space requires. A boardroom, a dinner, a creative meeting all ask for different energies. Alignment comes from meeting the moment, not overpowering it.

Let fit do the heavy lifting. Well-fitted clothing instantly communicates self-respect and awareness. You don’t need the most expensive pieces, just ones that sit properly on your body. Fit creates ease, and ease reads as confidence.

Use beauty rituals as a grounding cue. Getting ready can be a transition, not a rush. A consistent routine, skincare, fragrance, lipstick, signals to your nervous system that it’s time to arrive fully. Presence often starts before you leave the house.

Edit before you add. Strong presence usually comes from subtraction. Remove the piece that distracts, fidgets, or competes. What remains feels intentional, and intention is felt. As Coco Chanel famously advised, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”

Repeat what works. Signature elements build recognition and self trust. When you know what supports you, you stop second guessing. Familiarity creates steadiness, and steadiness amplifies presence.

Dress to support how you want to move. If you’re uncomfortable, distracted, or adjusting all day, your energy fractures. Choose pieces that allow you to sit, stand, walk, and gesture with ease. Presence lives in the body.

Allow beauty to signal readiness. Sometimes dressing well is the signal, to yourself and others, that you’re prepared. Wanting to look polished doesn’t negate authenticity, it often reinforces it.

Beauty and fashion don’t replace presence, but when you choose them well, they help you arrive fully, visibly, and on your own terms.

My biggest luxury this year isn’t a purchase, a place, or a possession. It’s time. Protected, intentional, and spacious enough to breathe.

Here are 10 ways we can buy ourselves more time in 2026.

1. Time-block your non-negotiables first.
   Sleep, movement, quiet mornings, and focused work get scheduled before everything else. What’s protected gets honored.

2. Design a decision-light life.
   Simplify recurring choice. Set menus, signature looks, default routines. Doing this allows your energy to go where it actually matters.

3. Batch everything that repeats.
   Content, errands, emails, cooking. One focused block beats five scattered interruptions every time.

4. Edit your obligations with intention.
   If it’s not aligned, necessary, or life-giving, it’s optional. Optional does not mean required.

5. Automate the mundane.
   Bills, deliveries, reminders, planning tools. Let systems handle what doesn’t need your brilliance.

6. Create a weekly reset ritual.
   One hour to review, reset, and re-prioritize saves you from five hours of chaos later.

7. Stop over-explaining.
   Clear boundaries and concise communication return time you didn’t realize you were giving away.

8. Build white space into your calendar.
   Unschedule margins for thinking, resting, and recalibrating. Spaciousness is productive.

9. Choose presence over performance.
   Fewer commitments, deeper engagement. You’ll move faster by doing less, but doing it better.

10. Honor your energy, not just your hours.

What I Mean by “Committed Goals” | When I say goals I’m committed to, I don’t mean a long list or vague intentions. I mean goals that meet three simple criteria:

• I’m willing to work on them consistently

• I’m willing to adjust how I use my time and energy.

• I’m willing to say no to things that compete with them

If a goal doesn’t meet those standards, it’s not a goal. It’s a wish.

Step One: Choose Fewer Goals Than You Think You Need | Most people don’t fail because they aim too low. They fail because they aim at too many things at once. For this year, choose no more than three primary goals. Ask yourself:

• What do I actually want to move forward this year?

• What would make a meaningful difference by December?

• What am I willing to stay with even when it’s not exciting?

Write them down, plainly. No adjectives. No justifications.

Step Two: Commit to Quarterly Assessments | Instead of constantly checking, adjusting, or second-guessing your goals, assess them quarterly. At the end of each quarter, ask:

• What progress did I make?

• What supported that progress?

• What got in the way?

• What needs to be adjusted for the next quarter?

This keeps you focused without micromanaging yourself and allows space for real life to happen between check-ins.

Progress doesn’t always require daily scrutiny. It requires periodic, honest review.

Step Three: Decide What You’re Not Doing This Year | Commitment isn’t only about what you say yes to. It’s also about what you stop negotiating. Ask:

• What activities or obligations pull energy away from these goals?

• What do I keep saying yes to out of habit?

• What sounds productive but doesn’t actually move me forward?

Choose one thing you’re intentionally stepping back from this year. This is where most progress actually comes from.

Step Four: Create One Simple Support Structure | Goals require intensity and focus, but they also need structure. That might look like:

• blocking time on your calendar

• assigning specific days to specific goals

• tracking progress weekly instead of daily

• using a planner or system that keeps decisions visible (this is where I use my digital lifestyle planner to map time, priorities, and check-ins)

The point isn’t control. It’s support.

When your days are structured around what matters, follow-through becomes easier.

A Grounded Way to Start the Year | You don’t need a dramatic reset. You need clarity, commitment, and a plan you’re willing to maintain.

Choose fewer goals. Define progress clearly. Remove what competes with them.
And support them with structure.

Notice What Cost You the Most Energy |

Next, look at where your energy went. Not just your time. Ask yourself:

• What drained me more than I realized?

• Where did I overextend?

• What required constant effort to justify or explain?

Energy is data. If something demanded more from you than it returned, that’s information worth carrying forward.

List two things that felt heavier than necessary. No judgment. Just awareness.

Identify What Quietly Worked |

Some of the most important things don’t announce themselves. Consider:

• habits that supported you without fanfare

• decisions that simplified your life

• boundaries that reduced friction

• changes that made things calmer, not louder

Write down three things that worked quietly but consistently. Those are your keepers.

Acknowledge What You Outgrew |

Growth often shows up as discomfort before clarity. Ask:

• What no longer fits the person I am now?

• What did I tolerate out of habit?

• What felt misaligned but familiar?

Outgrowing something doesn’t mean it was wrong. It means it served its purpose. Name one thing you’re ready to release, without dramatizing it.

Clarify What You’re Carrying Forward |

Now bring it together. Based on what you sustained, what drained you, what worked, and what you outgrew, complete this sentence:

“Next year, I am no longer willing to ____________________.”

Then complete this one:

“Next year, I am committed to continuing ____________________.”

These aren’t resolutions. They’re standards.

A Quiet Close to the Year |

This is not about reinvention. It’s about refinement. You don’t need to rewrite your life. You need to recognize what it’s already been teaching you. Take stock. Close the year cleanly. And let January 1 be about direction. Not correction.

Arrive With Ease, Not Chaos | Traveling during the holidays is basically a competitive sport. Delayed flights, lost luggage, crowds, and weather surprises will try your spirit. But once you arrive at someone’s home, your energy becomes a gift, or a burden. A chic, unbothered guest arrives with:

• A warm greeting.

• A quick thank-you.

• And zero stories about the drama that happened at the airport (save that for later.)

Your hostess shouldn’t have to recover from your arrival.

Bring a Thoughtful Host Gift | Not all gifts are created equal. Skip the last-minute grocery store wine. Instead, bring something that says, “I appreciate the space you’ve made for me.” A few elevated ideas:

• Offers to wash towels or take out the trash.

Being “low maintenance” is a gift. Being tidy is a virtue.

Follow the House Rhythm, Not Your Own | Every household has its own tempo. Some wake up at dawn. Some snack all day. Some lock the doors at 10p sharp. Observe first. Adjust second. This may include:

• If they decline, let it go.

• But always handle your own dishes.

• And offer to treat them to a meal, coffee run, or post-dinner cleanup.

Give Your Host Space, Too | Even the kindest host needs a moment alone. Leave the house for a few hours. Go for a walk. Meet a friend. Take a solo coffee break. Your presence should feel like a breeze, not a shadow.

Don’t Overstay Your Welcome | This may be the most important rule. If you said you’re leaving Monday, do not become one of those “I thought I’d stay an extra night” guests. Even if they insist you can stay longer, read the room.

Depart on time, leave the space better than you found it, and send a thank-you text as soon as you’re back home.

“No.”

Not, “I wish I could.”

Not, “Maybe next time.

Not, “Let me see if I can move some things around.”

Just,“no.”

Somewhere along the way, we were taught that being gracious meant being endlessly available. That to be seen as kind, cooperative, or “a team player,” we had to stretch ourselves thin, say “yes” to every committee, every lunch, every favor, every “quick question,” every “can you just…” request.

We all want to be included, to be the one people count on, but sometimes the most powerful move is stepping back.

But here’s the truth: a woman with presence, purpose, and a full life has to tell the truth about her capacity.

And sometimes the truest thing you can say is,

“No, not this time.”

“No, that’s not where my energy is going.”

“No, I don’t have the bandwidth.”

Without regret.

Without guilt.

Without the 4-paragraph follow-up explaining why.

“No” is not unkind.

We confuse kindness with availability. They are not the same.

You can be warm, generous, and deeply supportive, and still be discerning. In fact, discernment is a form of self-respect. It says: I value my time, my energy, my wellness, my calling, and I will not trade them casually.

When you say no:

• You’re not rejecting the person, you’re honoring the season and space you’re in.

• You’re not being difficult, you’re being clear.

• You’re not burning bridges, you’re creating boundaries.

The Guilt Spiral (and why we’re done with it) |

Guilt shows up because we’ve made ourselves responsible for other people’s feelings. We don’t want them to think we don’t care. We don’t want to lose access. We don’t want to seem ungrateful. We don’t want to disappoint.

But here’s the quiet truth: every “yes” that isn’t aligned with what we really want becomes a weight.

It clutters the calendar, drains the spirit, and moves you further away from the things you said you wanted, the book you’re writing, the rest you owe your body, the business you’re building, the presence you want to cultivate.

You cannot live an elevated, unbothered, on-purpose life while letting every request jump the line ahead of your own priorities.

You’re allowed to…

• Say “no” to unpaid emotional labor.

• Say “no” to roles that only need your name, not your brilliance.

• Say “no” to “we thought of you” when they didn’t think to pay you.

• Say “no” to social things when you need stillness.

• Say “no” even if your calendar looks open, because open time doesn’t mean available time. (Say that one again!)

You are allowed to protect what you’re building.

How to Say it Beautifully |

Because we’re still refined over here. We don’t ghost. We don’t over-explain. We don’t perform exhaustion.

Try these:

1. “Thank you for thinking of me. I can’t take this on right now.”

2. “This isn’t aligned with what I am focused on right now now, but I appreciate the invitation.”

3. “I’m at capacity, so I’ll have to pass.”

4. “I don’t have the bandwidth to do this well, so I need to decline.”

5. “No, but here’s an alternative.” (Only if you genuinely want to redirect.)

Short. Gracious. Final.

No footnotes. No apology tour.

The Presence Piece |

This is important: women with presence are decisive. They don’t wobble. They don’t say “yes” and then resent it. They don’t say “no” and then send three follow-up messages to soften it.

Your power is in the clean decision.

A clean “no” actually makes your “yes” more valuable. People learn: when she says “yes,” she’s in. She’s present. She’s contributing. She’s not scattered. She’s not silently drowning.

What We’re Not Doing Anymore |

• We’re not apologizing for managing our time and energy.

• We’re not letting people make us feel guilty for not being their “go-to” every time.

• We’re not betraying our own needs to maintain appearances.

• We’re not saying “yes” out of fear of missing out on rooms we don’t even want to be in.

Some invitations are flattering, but flattery is not assignment.

If you feel the guilt creeping in…

Remind yourself:

• “I’m not rejecting them; I’m choosing me.”

• “I’m allowed to have limits.”

• “I do not have to be available to be lovable.”

• “My no makes space for what’s actually important to me.”

And here’s the truth: the people who are meant for you, the ones who respect you and see you as the elevated, purposeful woman you are, will not be offended by your boundaries. They will honor them, because they have their own.

For some, the collection was a revelation. Black legacy represented in crested sweaters, blazers, and summer linens. For others, it was simply familiar. A lifestyle that has existed quietly, confidently, and with care for generations.

In my world, it is not unusual to have friends whose families have owned homes in Martha’s Vineyard for decades, who have passed down memories and keys along with legacies from Morehouse, Spelman, Howard, or in my case the “National Treasure” that is Morgan State University - 3 generations of graduates. This is not new. It is lived.

But let’s be clear: Black excellence and legacy do not start and stop at HBCUs or Oak Bluffs.

There are countless African Americans whose stories did not include a Historically Black College or University, or a family summer home in Martha’s Vineyard. Many attended PWIs. Many built their lives far from any institutional legacy. And many never attended college at all, but still rose, still thrived, still built businesses, raised families, contributed deeply to their communities, and carved out lives marked by dignity and purpose.

Their paths are no less valid, no less impressive, and no less worthy of celebration.

The narrative too often pushed into the mainstream is one-dimensional. The 6:00 p.m. news tends to show one version of Black life. One usually wrapped in trauma, crime, or crisis. But there are countless Black stories that don’t make the news. And they matter just as deeply.

It does not make us sellouts to honor tradition, to invest in education, or to gather in places where Black joy is generational. (Martha’s Vineyard is indeed our happy place!) That joy is not elitist. It is earned, preserved, and deeply rooted in a culture that values family, history, and excellence, not perfection.

Yes, there are Black families whose summers are spent barefoot in Oak Bluffs, whose Dads are Omegas, mothers are Links, and whose lives are enriched not in opposition to Black struggle, but in full acknowledgment of it. That is the nuance we rarely see, but it is where many of us live.

And it’s why Ralph Lauren’s collection matters. Not because we need a fashion house to validate our stories, but because the world needs a broader lens. We know our diversity. We live it. But moments like this, when our complexity is honored in ways that are beautiful and bold, deserve to be noted.

Black culture is not one thing. It is a spectrum. It includes the Black woman who is the first in her family to attend college, and the one whose grandmother and great-grandfather both walked the Spelman and Morehouse lawns before her. It includes those who found Oak Bluffs in adulthood, and those who learned to ride bikes and sip lemonade on its porches. It includes PWI grads, HBCU grads, state school grads, and those who never stepped foot in a college classroom but still built extraordinary lives.

We are not either/or. We are and/both.

This new collection may be a fashion statement to some. But to many of us, it’s an ancestral echo. A reminder. An invitation to continue embracing the fullness of who we are.

And for those who don’t quite get it, perhaps this is a chance to lean in and listen.

Her words resonated with me, because at times we have all been her.

We live in a world that rewards performance over presence. It’s easy to get caught in the cycle of over-giving, over-explaining, and over-functioning. All in an effort to prove that we deserve the room we’re already standing in.

The hard truth. We cannot outperform a belief that we are not enough. We can only transform it.

The Cost of Not Knowing Our Value |

When we don’t understand our value, we begin to seek validation in people, titles, money, or applause. We overstay in relationships and environments that drain us. We accept crumbs. We shrink our voice, second-guess our intuition, and work twice as hard for half the peace.

We become masters at making ourselves small just to be palatable. In actuality, our worth has never been up for debate.

Our Value Is Not Based on Proof, But on Presence |

Understanding our value starts with unlearning. We are not valuable because of what we have accomplished. We are valuable before the degree, the job title, the curated life. We are valuable in our unedited existence.

When a woman embraces her value, something in her softens, and something else strengthens.

She no longer performs. She embodies.

Stop explaining yourself to people committed to misunderstanding you.
Your value doesn’t need a PowerPoint. Let your presence speak.

Practice saying no without guilt. (This is huge for me!)
Every time you honor your boundaries, you reinforce your worth to yourself.

Affirm your identity. Not your performance.
Tell yourself: I am worthy even when I’m not producing. I am valuable even when I’m still.

Surround yourself with people who don’t flinch at your fullness.
The right people won’t ask you to earn your way into their lives. They’ll recognize you. They’ll see you.

Before I could take a breath, I was in full-on reaction mode … answering questions, troubleshooting, trying to keep things afloat. But the truth is, I never had the chance to anchor myself first. And I felt it.

We’ve all had mornings like that.

While we can’t control every surprise the day throws at us, we can control how we enter it. And when you lead others (or simply lead yourself) how you begin matters.

Here’s a morning ritual to help you reclaim your energy, set your tone, and lead from a place of calm confidence, even when chaos is swirling around you.

1. Arrive 15–30 Minutes Before Everyone Else

Quiet is a gift.
Use this sacred time to center yourself - no emails, no meetings, no conversations. Just you, your coffee, and your clarity.

This isn’t about hustle culture or working extra hours. It’s about creating space for you before the day starts asking for pieces of you.

2. Set a 5-Minute Grounding Ritual

You don’t need an elaborate routine. It just needs to be something intentional that brings you back to yourself. Try:

• A moment of silence or prayer

• Breathwork (box breathing: inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4)

• A mantra like: “I respond, I don’t react.”

These small rituals train your nervous system to begin the day from stillness, not stress.

3. Scan Your Calendar & Priorities

Before the pings and pop-ins start:

• Review your top 3 priorities for the day

• Spot any potential stressors ahead of time

• Block 10-minute buffers between meetings if you haven’t already

Don’t let the loudest voice in the room decide your day. Set your own agenda.

4. Write Down a Leadership Intention

Ground yourself in purpose by writing one clear sentence for how you want to lead today.

Examples:

• “Lead with clarity, not chaos.”

• “Protect my peace while solving problems.”

• “Model presence, not panic.”

Write it. Post it. Return to it when things get loud. My leadership intention today, “Listen and engage with an open mind.”

5. Visualize One Win

Ask yourself:

“What’s one thing that, if I accomplish it today, will feel like a win?”

This orients you toward outcomes instead of just spinning your wheels in reaction mode. Let your win shape your decisions and your energy.

6. Use a Physical Boundary Signal

Headphones. A closed door. A simple sign that says, “Quiet Time.” Whatever the signal, use it to hold space for your presence and set the tone for your day.

This isn’t rude. It’s leadership.

That said, be mindful here! Every office culture is different. If your environment is highly collaborative or open concept, your boundary cues may need to be subtle, intentional, and explained once in advance.

You’re not shutting people out, yet signaling:

“I’m not quite ready. Give me space to lead well.”

Done with grace, it actually builds trust. People feel safer when their leaders are centered.

7. Have a Grace Phrase Ready

Someone will come in hot. Something will feel urgent. Be ready with a boundary rooted in grace:

“Let me finish centering myself, and I’ll give this my full attention in 10 minutes.”

It’s calm. It’s professional. And it protects your presence without punishing theirs. NOTE: I recognize that there are times that you have to tend to an emergency asap. Do it! But also help your staff recognize that not everything is an emergency. Discernment is key!

Aging gracefully is about skincare and soul-care. It’s satin pillowcases, SPF and maybe a little Botox is that’s you jam. But it’s also boundaries, rest, purpose, and joy. Beauty lives in how you carry yourself. That confidence that no longer needs an introduction.

A Truth I’ve Come to Learn

When I was younger, I never thought I would age. But the truth is, if we are blessed, we will all grow older. Aging is not a failure. It’s not something to fix. Remember, it’s a luxury not afforded to everyone.

That doesn’t mean it’s always easy. We all wrestle with aging from time to time. I know I do. We’re human. Some days are harder than others, but I’ve decided to wear aging like a crown and fight back the negative inner voice on the not-so-good days.

And yes, book the facial, hire the trainer, get the filler, try the serum. (Truthfully, I recommend starting early.) Because aging gracefully doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing whatever makes you feel most like you.

Reclaiming the Timeline

Aging gives you permission to redefine your milestones. Who says you can’t start a new career at 50? Or fall in love again at 60? Or launch your dream project at 70? The truth is: your timeline is yours. Full stop.

For the Dolls in their 40s … the ones who are just now hitting their stride. You’re not behind. You’re not late. You’re right on time. This is the decade where you start showing up for yourself differently: clearer, bolder, and with a kind of quiet fire that can’t be taught. Only earned.

And to the Dolls in their 30s … we see you. You’re shedding old versions of yourself while carrying big dreams, big responsibilities, and sometimes a quiet fear of running out of time. Here’s the thing … you are “becoming” as our “Forever First Lady” Michelle Obama says. Your 30s are not a deadline. They are a launchpad.

This is your decade to unlearn what doesn’t serve you and build what does. You are planting roots and wings. Every decision, every pivot, every moment of clarity is shaping the woman you’re stepping into. And trust me - she’s already magic.

Each year adds clarity, courage, and character. Instead of fearing the future, we are all walking into it styled, seasoned, and spectacular.

We’re done measuring success by how much we can juggle. Now, we measure it in ease. In alignment. In how well we sleep at night. In how we pour into ourselves without guilt. In how many moments we’ve been present for … not just productive in.

Aging gracefully isn’t about fighting time. It’s about walking alongside it, hand in hand, fully aware of your own glow.
