A large crowd of Renaissance Active Living Centre members and well-wishers was on hand this morning for the Grand Opening of the Ren Cen’s new location at 6 Charles Walk in Elliot Lake.

The new Ren Cen location is in the lower plaza at 6 Charles Walk across from the LCBO and two doors up from Freitag’s Pharmacy.

Ribbon cutting, Cheque presentation, Celebration cake and more

The celebration included a ribbon cutting ceremony. Representing the City of Elliot Lake, Deputy mayor Charles Flintoff cut the ribbon as the crowd applauded the significant moment.

$5,000 donation from Silver Birch Centre

A cheque for $5,000 from the Silver Birch Centre was presented by Olav Svela, Vice-Chair.

A press release explained their generosity: “A healthy community needs places where people can meet, participate and remain connected,” said P.H. Harris, the Centre’s director. “The Renaissance Centre has been providing that kind of opportunity in Elliot Lake for more than three decades, and we are pleased to help support its continuing work.”

Ontario government support

Ren Cen president, Valerie Rutledge thanked the Ontario Ministry of Seniors and Accessibility for their ongoing annual support to make the center possible.

Local skilled trades recognized

Rutledge also thanked Mullins Custom Renovations of Elliot Lake and Fern’s Carpet in Blind River for the work performed to create the bright and attractive centre.

“Pat Mullins and his crew of workers, they’ve been awesome, wonderful. And the flooring was put down by the guys from Fern’s Carpet in Blind River. And those shuffleboard courts, that’s quite a feat to get those lines right into the floor. So they’ve done a great job!”

Cayen recognized for service

Executive Assistant Sylvia Cayen has served the Ren Cen for eighteen years. Rutledge took the opportunity to acknowledge and thank her; it was obviously heartfelt and a meaningful moment to both.

Background

At the council meeting of June 22, Deputy mayor Charles Flintoff shared a list of 8 council accomplishments.

June 22 - a noteworthy meeting

• It was the first meeting without the (now former) new CAO. One councillor commenting, “he’s on a legitimate vacation.” The CAO’s report delivered seven days before, connected directly to a treasurer’s request for a loan approval.

• Council approved borrowing of $21 million over 30 years to finance replenishment of reserve funds used to cash flow the arena remediation during the previous three years.

• The borrowing decision was this council’s first roll call vote - called by the deputy mayor - a surprising occurrence because council votes are almost always unanimous and with little debate.

Deputy mayor Flintoff’s list came as a bright spot during discussion of the loan. He noted, “We did not borrow one dollar for any of this.”

‘We did a new pavilion at Westview Park’

In early August 2023, citizens informed City staff of leaning columns on the existing structure.

It was inspected by staff and barricaded immediately. Within a few weeks an engineer’s inspection was performed and the structure was subsequently demolished.

Citizens’ input surveyed

During December 2024, staff conducted a public survey with 5 different pavilion options. The survey is here.

Snow loads. Shifting.

The Director of Recreation and Culture’s report delivered at a rec and culture committee meeting, March 3, 2025, described: “The structure was deemed unsuitable for the region’s winter conditions and snow loads, with noticeable shifting that raised safety concerns.”

It came to council a week later. Council approved the design shown in the story photo.

Fact check: Pros and cons

Pros: Sturdy attractive structure on a poured concrete pad

Offering a beautiful, unobstructed view of the lake, the new pavilion is a sturdy attractive structure on a poured concrete pad.

The new Westview Park Pavilion is an asset to Elliot Lake and a feather in council’s cap.

Cons: Citizens were required to report structural issue. Public selection survey ignored. No follow up report of final cost

Structural integrity of City asset not adequately monitored

It’s a problem, that the citizens were required to notify the City of the structural deficiency.

Provincially mandated plan

The purpose of a provincially mandated, Asset Management Plan (AMP) is to ensure each municipality monitors their built assets including municipal structures. It is a foundational document for financial planning of infrastructure and to help ensure public safety.

It remains notable that the implementation of the Asset Management Plan - arguably, the only measurable on council’s Strategic Plan 2023, remains incomplete. The Capital Plan is absent. That section lists built assets and their condition - ostensibly, requiring an inspection. The AMP is item 20 in the Strategic Plan here.

The structural deficiency itself, is not council’s “fault.” However, the still-incomplete AMP has been discussed since early in their term. That it is still not complete at the end of their term, is a council-oversight shortfall.

Survey of questionable value?

Noteworthy, the selection chosen by the citizens during the December 2024 public survey, was not selected by the council. No reason was given for not selecting the public’s choice.

Was the survey just window dressing?

U.S. tariffs - extra cost?

The purchase decision of March 2025 was made during U.S. tariffs issues. Concern was expressed about additional costs that could result.

While there was discussion about it at the March 10, 2025 council meeting, no clear response was received from staff and council did not request staff to come back with a definite answer.

On time and on budget?

Staff informed that the lead time was three months. That brought some urgency in March 2025, due to Elliot Lake’s 70th Anniversary celebrations that summer.

The structure was installed in late November.

Without a final report to council, it remains unknown if additional costs were incurred.

Yes! 100% Accountability, transparency, and multidirectional communication are standards of good government and enhance public trust.

Multidirectional communication allows meaningful participation, with citizens at the heart of the community driving our city forward and all citizens’ voices shaping our future together.

The city council meets in a circle. Everyone should have a voice within that circle. The citizens’ voices are missing. Youth and elder voices are missing. Committees and subcommittees are missing. Together, these are the voices that will shape the future of our community. Why aren’t they being heard? Individual working silos create systemic barriers and inequalities. The community is made up of all citizens, not a selected few. Multidirectional communication creates an environment built on transparency and trust. Fostering an environment built on social cohesion so we can all thrive together.

City council meetings and Economic development meetings are held when buses stop. This is an issue creating barriers for citizens to participate in a meaningful way. At the very least, Floating Economic Development meetings throughout the community could address this issue, providing meaningful participation to a diverse population throughout the community.

Transparency and open data initiatives foster trust. Serpent River First Nations has an app. Isn’t that amazing! The steps they take towards community well being are amazing and the true spirit of community.

Thank you for asking this important question. After serving on two previous councils and seeing each of those councils somewhat diminish public input—first by implementing filtering controls through staff, then by shuffling public input to various parts of the agenda—we currently have a suitable format that could still be improved.

Item 5, “Public Input Session,” currently requires members of the public to register in advance and then restricts them to speaking only on items already on the agenda. Renaming this section to “5. Public Question Period” and removing that restriction so speakers may raise any topic would help the public bring forward concerns and questions of public interest.

This minor change would also help persons with disabilities who may be unable to attend at the specific times when agenda items affecting their well-being are discussed. It would make Council more accessible.

This small but important change would give citizens better opportunity to address their concerns freely and would help persons with disabilities convey their challenges for Council’s consideration.

I would vote yes; however, I believe even this motion is inadequate.

I would propose two additions: first, to support hybrid participation by allowing residents to participate in person, remotely, and through written submissions; and second, to capture public input in real time through an official verbatim record, using available transcription software, so that all councillors can refer to submissions throughout the session. This ensures that not only can all residents participate, but that all resident voices are captured for consideration.

I would also advocate for the use of regular, plain-language reports after council meetings. Thunder Bay utilizes a city podcast, “The Minutes”, a closed-captioned report which explains council decisions and matters weekly. The Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner has acknowledged this method as enhancing accessibility and transparency; Elliot Lake could adopt this practical, resident-oriented communication practice. However, I also think promoting diverse views on city happenings is critical, and would support inviting the media to participate in meetings again. These provisions develop official information pipelines from the city itself and opportunities for broader, critical review of council directions. This is an area I have been researching, and will release that information shortly, including the example of “The Minutes”.

I will be voting yes on this motion because I support greater public participation and believe residents should have a meaningful chance to ask questions and understand Council decisions. At the same time, we need balance. The City has replaced the traditional question period with a structured public input session, which allows residents a limited time to speak on matters but does not permit a back-and-forth question period with officials. That process should remain so Council and staff can review matters carefully and provide informed responses. A Question Period should complement that process.

Other municipal formats may help guide this discussion. The City of Greater Sudbury includes a dedicated Question Period near the end of regular Council meetings, allowing recorded public questions on municipal matters or items arising from the meeting. The City of Barrie uses a pre-registered deputation model, where the public must register in advance to speak to scheduled items, with no open walk-up question period. The City of Orillia also relies on formal deputations and pre-arranged public forums, including 10-minute deputations, Clerk-submitted requests, and clarifying questions from Council without debate.

These examples show municipalities take different approaches: some allow a structured Question Period, while others rely on formal, pre-arranged participation. Our goal should be a balanced model that improves public engagement while maintaining order, fairness, and efficiency.

With clear time limits, consistent rules, and an understanding of past challenges, we can strengthen public participation while keeping Council meetings respectful, productive, and efficient.

I support a Question Period at regular Council meetings because Council is directly accountable to residents and is where major municipal decisions are made. I don’t believe the same formal Question Period is necessary at committee meetings. Committees are primarily working bodies that review issues, hear staff recommendations, and develop recommendations for Council. Residents should have opportunities to provide input into matters before committees, but a formal Question Period could interrupt committee work and cause unnecessary delays.

If we establish a Question Period at Council meetings, I believe it should have reasonable rules that protect citizens’ ability to ask questions while maintaining a fair and orderly process. These could include:

• A maximum amount of time for Question Period.

• A reasonable time limit per person.

• Questions must relate to municipal matters.

• The option to submit questions beforehand so that well-thought-out answers can be provided.

• A defined amount of time for Council members to respond.

• No repetitive questions, personal attacks, or questions unrelated to municipal business.

• No individual should be allowed to monopolize Question Period.

I support meaningful public participation, but I also believe there needs to be a balance between public access and allowing Council and its committees to conduct their work efficiently.

After advocating for the return of questions to council for the last 2 terms the public should be aware of any council member who would vote against this.

This is one of the main reasons I chose to run for council this term as from the beginning of this term of council, citizens have been asking me to raise their issues at the public input sessions for them at council meetings. They often cite being frustrated by the process and/or uncomfortable speaking in the formal setting that is a council meeting on camera.

The Public’s Questions Deserve Answers.

For me this issue starts before the quoted policy contained in the question with the Elliot Lake City Crest, Latin at the top, Omnes Ad Unum. Translation “Together as One”.

How can our local government make decisions about us, without engaging us other than every 4 years at the ballot box. Well, that’s the way it’s realistically been for 2 terms of council after the removal of question period and introduction of Public Input only. Council is not permitted according to the amended procedural by-law to speak or have a dialog with the citizen giving the public input.

The following are direct quotes from the Accountability and Transparency Policy that the amended procedural by-law contradicts;

• Encouraging public access and participation so that decision making is responsive to the needs of its constituents and receptive to their opinions.

• The municipality will engage its stakeholders throughout its decision-making process which will be open, visible and transparent to the public.

• Accountability - how council, councillors and staff are to account for their actions and how those actions are explained and justified.

• Public Participation and Information Sharing - The Municipality has policies which ensure that participation by the public can be meaningful and effective.

Balancing fairness to council and citizens:

I would advocate for the motion to include a 2 step process since I understand the challenge the placement of questions can cause in a council meeting - as pointed out to me by our previous mayor, Dan Marchisella, at a council meeting.

He was accurate in saying that when I posed a question prior to the issue debated by council that I effectively became the sole councillor by forcing discussion prior to the item being spoken to by the agenda.

Step 1 - Public Input

• Council deliberations via the agenda decisions are made.

Step 2 - Public Question period

• Provides council the opportunity to explain their decisions and gives the public the trust that their participation was acknowledged.

• Done respectfully Accountability and Transparency by all sides exists and deliberations and decisions by council are better served.

The process done this way assures priorities are recognized, participation is constructive and council communicates with the community openly and transparently in real time twice a month.

This practice would truly embody the words on the city’s crest, Together as One, and fulfill the mandate of the Accountability and Transparency Policy.

New estimate could be an either 133% or 311% increase

On Monday, August 24, council received a report from the Director of Recreation and Culture requesting “That Council approve $350,000 for the completion of the Parsons Park & Rogers Arena Retaining Wall; and That the funds be drawn from the Buildings and Facilities Reserve.”

It is unclear if this is a firm price or another estimate. Transparency for the public is limited; no contract or specifications were included in the agenda package for Monday’s council meeting.

It is also unclear whether the new cost is an increase from the $80k in the draft capital budget, or $85k as referred to by the rec director’s report, or from an amendment moved and passed last December to $150k.

And no one on council asked for that information. Or the contract and specifications.

Deficiencies were noted by staff two years ago

The director’s report informs: “In late summer 2024, staff identified significant structural and safety concerns with the retaining wall, bleacher seating, and access area between the Parsons Park ball diamond and the south end of Rogers Arena. The pathway and bleacher access had shifted toward the ball diamond, resulting in movement of the retaining wall behind the home team dugout. The existing cribbing and wood seating had also deteriorated beyond their expected lifespan.”

‘An important structural role in supporting the south end of Rogers Arena’

Staff report: “The Parsons Park retaining wall and bleacher reconstruction is necessary to ensure the continued safety and use of the area, including access to the visitors' dugout, spectator sections, and washrooms.

“The retaining wall also plays an important structural role in supporting the south end of Rogers Arena. Staff are therefore requesting Council's approval for the additional funding required to complete the project based on the updated estimate of $350,000.”

‘Additional funding will therefore be required’

Report: “During the budgeting process, $85,000 was proposed by the Treasurer and subsequently approved by Council for this project in the 2025 budget. Based on the updated project estimate received through Perry + Perry, the total project cost is now anticipated to be approximately $350,000.

“Additional funding will therefore be required to proceed with the project and complete the necessary structural, accessibility, drainage, and safety improvements,” the director’s report states.

Architect’s report

In a separate report delivered in a presentation at the beginning of the council meeting by architect, Chris Perry of Perry + Perry Associates, Perry told the council and public, “In terms of budget, there has been no extraneous or items that have incurred any additional costs.

‘Within our original mandated budget’

“We seem to be within our original mandated budget that we need, and don't foresee any at this time - any unforeseens, that are going to take us beyond that.

“We're at the finishing line, we're in the third period, a minute to go, and I can't wait to take that final shot. So that's my report for today,” Perry said.

Based upon past email and in-person conversations between ElliotLakeCitizen and Chris Perry, information has been open and reliable; therefore the citizens may wish to consider that the scope of his comments may not include all arena-related costs.

A 360 degree view

It appears there is an opportunity for improvement regarding accountability and transparency with processes affecting the ratepayers of Elliot Lake.

The good news: It also appears we will have “Blades on the ice in September.”

UPDATE, August 30 - 2:55 p.m.: Earlier today a reader commented on this story: “Did you not hear Councillor Bull directly ask this question & receive an answer....”

The video archive of the council meeting does include Bull asking, “So we budgeted $85,000. Is that included in the $350,000, or is that on top?” The director of recreation and culture informed Bull that it was included in the $350k.

ELC did miss Bull’s comment and thanks the reader for bringing attention to it. ELC apologizes for that omission.

$150k - another ‘slush fund’?

It still remains unclear whether the friendly amendment made at the Ad Hoc Budget Committee meeting of December 15, 2025 - adding $150,000 to the Capital Budget for the retaining wall, will be used to cover part of the $350k approved last Monday. Or if Monday’s approval leaves the $150k available for something else now.

Asking that question and ensuring that staff supplied a written contract including drawings and specifications in the agenda package, would have gone a long way toward putting ratepaying Elliot Lakers, the council, and City staff all on the same page.

Is the $750k contingency already committed?

On July 13, council approved an additional $750k contingency in addition to the $26.6m estimate.

Why was the retaining wall not picked up by the $750k contingency?

The contingency is specified in the July 13 report, “Rogers Arena – Final Cost,” here.

The first signs of a municipal election

Election Day is October 26, 2026.

The first campaign signs popped up in Elliot Lake today.

Before 4 p.m. two candidates’ signs were staked onto a prized spot at Hillside Drive South and Hwy 108: Charles Flintoff and Mike Thomas. More are sure to follow soon.

Elliot Lake has three traffic-light controlled intersections. This is one of the few spots in town where motorists have a short wait in this convenient city were “everything is just five minutes away.”

Voting Day 2026 is Monday, October 26.

Addressing council Monday evening, resident Mike Thomas suggested a review of arena invoices from two vendors where questions have arisen.

Thomas made clear that he was not referring to the present architectural firm’s work or scope - that firm, presently overseeing completion of the project. A principal of that firm was also on hand Monday evening to bring an update report with well-received, good news about the project status.

Avoided the word ‘audit’

Apparent anomalies with regard to billings, cost control by staff, and oversight by council, have been raised by ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC) after review of invoice documents received in response to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.

And the citizens of Elliot Lake too, even without that information at their disposal, have raised questions about costs and cost overruns.

Thomas’s ask on Monday, avoided the word “audit.”

Instead, he said, “It might be helpful if we had the opportunity to have a review of those invoices and make sure that there’s no duplicates or overbilling.”

The invoices from the two firms total about $16 million.

Thomas’s three questions in July

Thomas asked questions on this topic at council six weeks ago, noting, “I’ve personally brought [this] up three times in two years.”

At that meeting, he asked three questions: Who’s in charge of the billed versus completed items? Who’s challenging the failed ideas that were billed to us? And who’s going after the cost recoveries?

His questions did not receive answers.

Inadequate control and oversight

An email from the contractor in late April, sent to the new (now former) CAO and obtained under FOI, suggested a long pattern of approvals with inadequate or missing preapproval - prior to the new CAO’s arrival and the new CAO’s questioning of the contractor.

The email and another FOI response of August 17, appear to leave little - if any doubt that preapprovals - purchase orders, contracts, etc., were not in existence for many of the invoices.

‘A report to council or the next administration’

At council on Monday, Thomas asked: “If there was a way … that we could put a moratorium on payment for 90 days until such time as the Director of Finance and Treasurer could bring a report back before this council or the next administration, so that we might look at cost recovery for that.”

‘Complete radio silence’

Later, when the arena item came up for discussion, no member of council spoke to Thomas’s suggestion or made inquiry of staff.

I am writing to ask if you would please advise me of the accomplishments of your term – that you championed or participated in as a member of council.

Deputy Mayor Flintoff detailed some at the June 22 council meeting:

• We opened the Arts and Heritage Centre

• We did the pump track

• We did the LED lighting at Burley 1, Burley 2

• We did Hillside Drive North, from the Collins Hall to the curb

• We did completely renovate [the pool] and retrofit it and got [it] open.

• HVAC’s going on in Collins Hall right now

• We got underwater line under Elliot Lake

• We did a new pavilion at Westview Park

During the next couple of weeks, if you would please just remind me of other council accomplishments this term, it would be appreciated. In respect of your time, I don’t need a lot of detail. I can look up the details.

Citizens add to the list

Two weeks ago, ELC took the question to the citizens on four popular local Facebook pages. “Would you please add comments with more accomplishments of the present council for an ElliotLakeCitizen story or story series?” the invitation read.

The public’s 74 comments brought these additions:

• Helping establish a community garden at Nordic Park

• CCTV cameras

• Arena remediation

• Paved 5 km of Dunlop Shores Rd.

• Refurbished the Fire Tower

• New buses

• New City trucks

During the next eight weeks, we’ll briefly examine the eight projects the deputy mayor cited.

However, ELC intends to spend more time creating opportunities for all the candidates to showcase their platforms and ideas.

Because during the next four years, we need a council that can get everybody pulling the same direction on the oars.

OPINION - Some Sunday morning thoughts

Readers of local Facebook pages will know there is a heightened campaign recently on FB, to suggest that ElliotLakeCitizen “doesn’t write anything positive about city council.”

ELC has a different view: The council of 2022 has received quite a few poor stories simply because they’ve ignored many important opportunities and made many poor decisions.

And that includes recent matters that raise truly serious questions such as the disappearance of the CAO and the arena remediation finances, to name just two.

A question for the critics: Who else is asking questions or writing in any depth about those two crucial matters?

But is ELC’s critique disproportionate?

Of course it is - because media sources write for different readerships and have different business models: They write from those perspectives.

ELC doesn’t write to flatter power or for business advertising revenue.

ElliotLakeCitizen is for the citizens: The little guy citizens who collectively contribute the most to the public purse …

… but appear to be benefitting the least.

Candidates, let’s humanize our local politics a bit this week!

Question: What are your favorite ways to enjoy the summer in Elliot Lake?

Feel free to take lots of latitude. This could be memories, present activities, or aspirational.

Growing up in Elliot Lake, the Jewel in the Wilderness, was a childhood I wish I could give my children. I learned to four-wheel with my father in the bushes behind Frame Crescent and go canoeing down rapids up the White. Portage through the wilderness across swampy islands to an undisclosed lake of pure black depth. The best fishing I’ve ever had. I’ve been looking for this place since I was a teenager, and my father is no longer here to tell me where. So I continue my search and adventures with my own children.

Summers in Elliot Lake hold vast opportunities for adventure and experiences unlike any other region. From the beautiful pristine lakes to the dense forest and mountains. I love spending my summers exploring my hometown just like any other season. I love to snowshoe, ice fish, hike, kayak, and explore on my ATV. When camping, I enjoy teaching my children about the outdoors, learning the values of living off the land in reciprocity with nature and survival skills. Leaving no footprints behind.

Our favorite spots are Cinder Lake, where I watched my grandparents build and manage the campgrounds. Mink Lake, a thinking spot of sacredness, and Spine Beach, a place I escaped to as a teenager and now find great peace as a family. Camping with my family as a child at Sunshine Beach is a memory that has instilled a deep respect for our community, heritage, and love for our environment to this day, and I strive to teach my children the same values.

We now take our time to appreciate the cycle of life, learning to nurture life and respect for one another. We go on adventures and treasure hunts, collecting old items, bottles, and artifacts. We collect nature’s trinkets and create art with them on rainy days. Or display our very favourites to remember our cherished moments. I have enough to start a museum.

I’ve even found Ojibway artifacts on our adventures. A thought to be a paddle hung proudly for years. Found to be a snow shovel (ashawe kishabwee or wabihaw-kojigan), expected to be anywhere from 150 to 1000 years old. You never know what adventures are to be found in your own backyard. A whole new appreciation and curiosity for our history indeed.

Summer is usually a time of rush and adventure; however, this summer is different. Due to physical limitations, I’m having to stop and discover new activities and have the time to dive into new passions. Learning to know myself on a deeper level, learning about other cultures and religions while I shape my own. Appreciating the diversity that makes the world so beautiful and relearning our history have been ongoing goals for years that I now dive deeper into.

I have always wanted to run for council. Now I have the opportunity to take the time, the adversity, my lived experiences, ambitions, goals, and academic journey to help make the changes I’ve wished to see in Elliot Lake. Changes I’ve wished to see throughout my childhood and as an adult, even more so for my children and the well-being of our community: Closing systemic gaps, reducing societal oppression, and reducing barriers so we can all thrive together.

Community and neighbour circles allow for the opportunity for everyone to be heard. Putting together all the pieces with what matters most at the center ❤️ Citizens make the community and we want to listen.

I’ve had a few set backs in life that have limited my physical abilities, Getting Lyme Disease; This took almost 7 years to recover from. But I do enjoy walking my dog and enjoying the scenery.

We go up to the Fire Tower lookout quite a bit. That really shows you how big Canada is!

Going for a drive in the fall is breathtaking up here. I have been busy with home repairs, so next year I plan on getting a boat and really enjoy Elliot Lake!

MACKNIGHT, Jacquelyn

My favorite ways to enjoy summer in Elliot Lake include starting the day at 5 a.m. with fresh coffee on the back deck, listening to morning birds and watching the dogs play.

I love watering the garden, picking vegetables, and meeting a friend for breakfast at one of our wonderful restaurants to catch up on everything since we last saw each other.

I enjoy driving to the Miners Memorial to watch the loons in the morning, visiting the beaches, stopping by the market next to the Moose, buying fresh baked goods from our amazing baker, and walking at Sheriff Creek.

Other favorites include attending Elliot Lake Women’s Circle events, listening to live music at local restaurants, enjoying Elliot Lake Entertainment Series performances, browsing shops for new finds and old treasures, visiting the Arts and Heritage Centre, and watching movies at the library.

I also value attending service club events and meetings, volunteering at the food bank, charity shops, and other organizations that help make Elliot Lake better.

Most of all, I enjoy spending time with friends in the best little city in Ontario. There are so many options and so little time.

I have meet and greets scheduled at the Heritage Lodge for:

MEYER, Jeannie

For the last couple of years, summer has been quieter for me. By the time I finished my schoolwork most days, I was usually running on empty.

So, my summers became smaller and closer to home: sitting in the backyard by an occasional bonfire, chatting with neighbours from the driveway, or taking a few extra minutes at the store to catch up with someone I know. Sharing news, checking in, and laughing about the weather may seem ordinary, but those small conversations are part of what has always made Elliot Lake feel like home to me.

Last summer, I was also happy to host my spouse’s family from Grand Forks and friends from Ladner. It was a pleasure to show them around our city and the surrounding area, share some favourite spots, and let them experience Elliot Lake in a personal, relaxed way. It reminded me that community isn’t defined only by major events or big plans. It is built in the small moments: a visit, a conversation, a walk, or simply making someone feel welcome.

Now that one of my master’s programs is complete, I am looking forward to having more energy and time to enjoy summer and to work toward making Elliot Lake even more welcoming and accessible. I have missed going up to the Fire Tower, heading up the 108 to have coffee at a little spot north of the city, and starting all over like a new tourist. I definitely want to attend the artists in the park and arts on the trail again too; it all feels new to me again.

For all of us, I want to work to see more parks, sidewalks, trails, and waterfront spaces with shade, seating, smooth paths, and places to rest, so more people can take part in community life in the ways that they find connect them to this beautiful city and its people.

Summer in Elliot Lake is one of my favorite times of year. The forests, lakes, trails, and beaches make it easy to spend time outdoors and enjoy everything the community has to offer.

One of my favorite summer activities is mountain biking. Elliot Lake has a great trail network, with routes that suit many different skill levels. Some rides are relaxed and scenic, while others include challenging climbs and faster sections that make the experience exciting. No matter which trail I choose, I enjoy being surrounded by trees, fresh air, and beautiful northern scenery.

I also enjoy volunteering with trail clean-up whenever help is needed. Keeping the trails safe and clean is important, especially when so many people use them for biking, hiking, and exploring. Helping with clean-up is a simple way to give back to the community and make sure others can enjoy the trails too.

Hiking is another summer activity I look forward to. Walking through Elliot Lake’s forests beneath tall hemlock trees gives me a chance to slow down, breathe in the fresh air, and reconnect with nature. The quiet trails, shaded paths, and natural beauty make hiking a peaceful break from everyday routines.

Summer also means plenty of visits to the dog park. It is always enjoyable to watch the dogs run, play, explore, and make new friends. Their excitement adds to the fun of the season and gives us another reason to be outside together.

The beaches are another highlight of summer in Elliot Lake. Our dogs especially love frolicking in the water, and watching them splash, swim, and play along the shoreline never gets old. Spending time by the water is relaxing, refreshing, and a perfect way to enjoy warm days.

For me, summer in Elliot Lake is about staying active, enjoying nature, caring for the community, and sharing outdoor adventures with the dogs, family, and friends. Whether I am biking a trail, helping clean one, hiking under the trees, visiting the dog park, or spending time at the beach, each activity reminds me how special this place is.

Elliot Lake is truly a wonderful place to spend the summer—active, connected, and full of adventure.

SIZE, Michael Gregory

I have a lot of fond memories of growing up in Elliot Lake back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

As a child, I spent a lot of time outside in the bush around the Beckett/Lawrence area, riding bikes, renting movies at Paris Mini-Mart, and going to Spine Beach with my friends.

As an adult, I still enjoy the outdoors, but I am quite busy at home tending to my backyard, working on house projects, and performing maintenance and repairs on my family’s vehicles with my father.

I like to fish when the opportunity presents itself, and I especially enjoy spending time with friends and family. I like to work out and exercise in my basement and tinker with electronics and computers.

One of my hobbies is building and maintaining vintage and modern computers. I also help friends and family with computer issues, as well as people online in Facebook groups. I like the challenge of troubleshooting and fixing things that need to be repaired.

One of my goals is to do at least one productive thing every day. That is what I spend my summers doing in Elliot Lake.

THOMAS, Mike

For me, summer is a time of leisurely relaxing and taking in nature and all our community offers to reconnect with tranquility. Outdoors with my wife and the dogs. Going to the lookout tower and taking in the panoramic vista that we inhabit. Talking to people taking their daily walks on our many paths and sidewalks. Trails aren’t for everyone at some point.

It’s refreshing to see children playing at Kiwanis Park. Sitting at the Boardwalk during a sunset is like being in a post card.

Summer is also the time when I get to catch up with our neighbors and have conversations with other citizens at our local stores and shops in town. There are endless ways to enjoy the outdoors and breathe in the fresh air without the hustle and bustle in a large city.

Every day in my back yard there is an abundance of bird song and wildlife since we are close to the bush. It is not uncommon to see bears, fox, coyotes, wolves and fisher.

I have also seen moose and deer at the end of our street. Every night after dinner we get to see a mural painted in the clouds right out our window.

I have been to many locations in Canada and the USA and I am grateful for the peace that I feel at home in Elliot Lake. If there was ever a handbook for how to relax among friends and take in nature while having access to necessities Elliot Lake would surely be in there.

Registration for mayoral and council candidates closed this afternoon at 2 p.m., Friday, August 21.

Councillor Luc Morrissette appeared on the website list shortly before the deadline.

Morrissette was the only new name to appear today.

Sixteen-year veteran not running

The only certainty now - Councillor Norman Mann will not be returning.

ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC) confirmed that with the City Clerk. And subsequently in conversation with Mann.

ELC hopes to bring an interview story with Mann in the near future. His 16 years of public service spans many significant events and periods.

Mann served on council and key committees since 2010.

Council is not ‘lame duck’

First potential lame duck period

Because of Morrissette’s registration today, the council will not be in a lame duck situation.

Lame duck prevents the council from making financial decisions. However, as stated, the council is not in a lame duck situation between now and election day, October 26.

Second potential lame duck period

All registered incumbents need to be re-elected on Election Day to avoid the second possible lame duck period between October 26 and inauguration day.

Inauguration Day is likely to take place during the second half of November.

Luc Cyr served on Elliot Lake city council in 2014 and 2018. In each election, receiving the highest number of votes for a council seat. Last time, he decided to sit out a term.

Today, Cyr registered to stand for election to a councillor seat in 2026.

ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC) spoke to Cyr this afternoon.

ELC: What was it that caused you to to come back and stand for council?

Cyr: “Well, personally, I wanted to last term. It was just personal circumstances … I didn't have the time to do it.

“During that absence of 4 years, I did really miss serving the people in that capacity and it was always my intention to come back this election.

“And now I'm just finishing that commitment. I want to ensure that I'm available to serve the citizens if they choose to elect me again,” he said.

ELC: Is there anything else that you would want Elliot Lakers to know at this point of your campaign launch?

Cyr: “My focus during the 8 years that I was there, was always on serving citizens and being open to hearing their concerns and their issues and always to be accessible to them.

“And that's always been the main focus of my presence on council. I always wanted to be a voice for the average citizen. That doesn't mean I'll always agree with everybody - and I'm not afraid to share that disagreement if I have to stand on my convictions - but I will always be there to listen to citizens and share your concerns as much as possible,” he said.

Elliot Lake taxpayers have watched in horror for 3 years as an arena remediation project on a fast-track to “blades on the ice in September (2024)” ballooned from a guesstimate of about $5 million “with fifty-cent dollars,” to an estimated $26.6 million that has required a $21 million dollar term loan.

In June, approaching the end of their term, council approved the $21 million 30-year amortized term loan, to replenish other project’s reserves that had been used to cash-flow the arena remediation.

The financing costs are an additional $15.6 million - if the introductory rate of the first 3-year term holds for the 30-year amortization.

And more than 2-years into the project, we learned that the parking lot is not included.

That elusive estimated cost

Once in motion, the total estimated remediation cost was a question with an answer as difficult for Elliot Lake ratepayers to find as the pea in a shell game.

Finally, on June 15 a formal report from the new CAO presented the total estimated number.

It was the CAO’s last public appearance. That messenger disappeared shortly afterward.

Will a forensic audit be an election issue?

On Monday, August 17, ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC) received a response to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request of July 21.

The response confirmed what had been indicated in a 404-page response to an earlier FOI request: There has been an egregious lack of financial control. And cost overrun even where approved estimates exist.

Formal request to council

In response to Monday’s information and in support of ELC readers and other citizen requests, ElliotLakeCitizen has requested that council formally request the Office of the Auditor General of Ontario conduct a forensic audit.

ELC’s formal request was emailed to each member at 3:30 p.m. yesterday and delivered in hardcopy. It is here:

In addition to the four-page request letter, ten-pages of supporting information provide:

• Monday’s FOI response.

• A two-page list from a vendor’s invoices through two companies with invoices totaling $15,966,496.03. The invoices have no, or inadequate, purchasing cost control.

• An estimate for foundation work at $3,594,327.30 (Revision 3); and a list of foundation-related invoices totaling $5,529,478.09. The invoices exceed the estimate by $1,935,150.79. (The invoices are included in the $15.9m two-page list.)

• Email correspondence between the vendor and the recently departed new CAO. The correspondence: an exchange where the CAO questioned the vendor regarding pre-authorizations.

An opportunity for council to act in a proactive and transparent manner

The request was a final opportunity for council to act in a proactive and transparent manner before a potential lame duck period. And it is the final opportunity for new candidates to register.

At 5:01 PM ELC received the following message from Mayor Andrew Wannan:

During the past council term, Mike Thomas has been a frequent contributor to the Public Input Session at council, standing committees, and advisory committees.

A search lists more than 60 appearances - an average of slightly more than one a month during the four years.

Thomas brought comment and questions on major infrastructure projects, governance, and community services.

Few of his podium questions were answered; so now, he offers to bring them to the table.

‘Absolutely, we need you to run … we need you at the table’

ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC) spoke to Thomas earlier today.

ELC: “You’ve decided to step forward and offer your services on council. How did you come to that decision and what you want to bring?”

Thomas: “You know, I wasn’t going to do it. I had pretty much resigned myself that running for office again wasn’t in the future but in the last six months, the uptick of people coming forward to ask me to run, it had gotten stronger and stronger.

“People called me on the phone, sent me emails, direct messages on Facebook, stopped my wife and I in the store and they said, ‘Absolutely, we need you to run because we need you to do what you’ve been doing at the podium. Only we need you at the table to do it.’

“My wife and I discussed it - we made the decision to stay in Elliot Lake for the rest of our lives quite some time ago - so, I said, well, if we’re going to live here and this is our home, I might as well contribute because I’ve always believed in civic duty and civic responsibility.

“And I feel that the best thing I could do is continue to try and help the community as a whole.”

‘Every citizen in this community to have a voice at that table’

ELC: “What projects - what topics - what is close to your heart?

Thomas: “The number one thing that’s always been close to my heart is the ability of every citizen in this community to have a voice at that table.

“And that’s largely been through what was formerly known as question period. And now it’s a Public Input Session.

“There seems to have been a progressive effort over the last two terms of council to eliminate that conversation.

“The things that have always been important to Elliot Lake are community involvement - both at council meetings and in the decision-making process.

In one of his earliest public inputs this term, January 3, 2023, Thomas began with a memorial tribute to the late Donald Nichols and urged council to enhance rather than restrict the public question period. Mr. Nichols was a regularly contributing citizen at council and committee meetings.

Infrastructure issue continues

“Our infrastructure has always been a big issue but that issue continues.

“So whoever’s sitting at that table has to make decisions that affect the lives of all of us, every single day.

“The focus should be on what are the things that matter most to Elliot Lakers,” he said.

‘We need the amenities’ - and necessities, too

“We need the amenities, of course. The ski hill, the golf course, the arena, the swimming pool. Those are all big features that people use.

“But people don’t stop to consider: What about sidewalks? What about the appearance of when you drive into town or you look at the boulevards? What about all the trees they took down?

“Transit. The transit’s been a back and forth issue for three terms of council and we still haven’t got that done. With all the work, the studies and the discussions that went along with that, we’re still at square one with how we’re going to provide reliable, accessible transit for everyone.

‘They’re still sitting there, a mess’

“During the last - I think it was in the last three or four years, we’ve had several buildings, schools, apartment complexes burned to the ground. And they’re still sitting there, a mess.

“That can’t continue. How can we build the city up? How can we make it better if all those piles of ash and junk are just lying around?

“More needs to be done to hold those property owners accountable to clean that mess up so that we can put something new there, rebuild what was there. But the enforcement of our property standards and bylaws is ‘lacking,’ to be generous.”

Pool programs

“One of my very important topics that’s dear to my heart is the swimming pool.

“I firmly believe it should be open 12 months out of the year. Why do we close it down for the entire summer?

“You know, I’m going to advocate strongly for that facility to be open year round.

“There’s a tremendous amount of benefit that comes with having a swimming pool that has access available to everyone, not least of which is the children at the school that use it; the older people that do aqua fit classes, people go in there to maintain their health.

“And there’s spinoffs there that we don’t even capitalize on. There’s programs through the health system that we could run, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, cardio therapy for people that are worried about their general conditioning.

“All those things are services to the community that we should be using that facility to provide.

“They generate revenue more than they take away revenue from the city, so it’s a net plus,” he said.

‘We’re responsible for 100 per cent of the population’

The comments Thomas made today are consistent with his message of the past four years.

Addressing the budget committee, he said, “As a community, we're responsible for 100 per cent of the population. And I'd like to remind you and everybody watching that we survive based on services, not just capital expenditures.

“We're here to serve the community.”

Background

On June 15, (then) CAO Matthew Hough delivered a report to the Committee of the Whole, Rogers Arena Rehabilitation Project – Past, Present and Future. All members of council were present. It was not well received.

On June 22, council proceeded into a closed session to consider, Report from the Manager of HR Re. Three Month Performance Check-In - Chief Administrative Officer.

On June 29, the City issued a press release, City of Elliot Lake Announces Leadership Transition. “The City of Elliot Lake announces that Matthew Hough is no longer serving as the City’s Chief Administrative Officer, effective June 29, 2026.”

No resolutions of council and no mayoral directives effecting the “transition” have been located.

And on August 7, in a response to a Freedom of Information request of July 9, the municipal clerk advised, “No resignation letter responsive to your request exists.”

A reader’s questions

The morning after last Sunday’s story, What really happened to the CAO, Mr. Mayor?ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC) received questions from a reader about the process surrounding the CAO’s disappearance.

“After reading the six-page CAO review you posted, and now the City’s FOI response saying there is no resignation letter, I have even more questions about the process surrounding the former CAO’s departure,” the reader wrote to ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC).

The questions were specific. On Monday afternoon, ELC sent them to Mayor Andrew Wannan. Subject: An opportunity for you to respond - CAO process, etc.

CAO disappearance. Déjà vu?

Elliot Lake waited for three years to locate a suitable, permanent CAO.

The long wait began after the sudden departure of the previous permanent CAO. That CAO too, departed immediately following a tense meeting.

‘I didn’t think I’d be getting the push back I’m getting’

The discussion about a Working Alone Policy and related equipment purchase, begins at 09:05. The testy exchange between the permanent CAO of 2023 and Mayor Wannan begins at 24:00.

Considering Elliot Lake’s sudden and unexplained CAO departures, how will we attract the top talent we need to address our infrastructure problems?

‘It may be discussed in closed session pursuant to section 239(2)(b) of the Municipal Act’

Section 239(2)(b) was cited June 22, when council proceeded into a closed session to consider, Report from the Manager of HR - Re. Three Month Performance Check-In - Chief Administrative Officer.

“As this matter deals with personal matters about an identifiable individual, including municipal employees it may be discussed in closed session.”

Questions about whether a closed session was proper are evaluated by the Ontario Ombudsman.

However, whether open session or closed, members of council are bound by the Code of Conduct.

Possible Code of Conduct violations are evaluated with Section 223.4 of the Municipal Act. That process, administered by the Integrity Commissioner.

‘Complete radio silence’

The term “complete radio silence,” was used during the campaign period of 2022 by (then) candidate for council, Charlie Flintoff.

At the third All-Candidates night hosted by CAUSE, October 12, 2022, Flintoff expressed his frustration about how difficult he said it was to get information from the previous council.

Citing property questions about 80 Dieppe and All Nations Terrace, he described that council’s response as “complete radio silence.”

Now four years later, the deputy mayor has an opportunity to raise questions at the table on another matter of “complete radio silence.”

Elliot Lake embraced the term Jewel in the Wilderness to highlight the natural beauty of the dense wilderness surrounding our city.

To protect our environment and the beauty that surrounds us for future generations, it is crucial that we adopt green initiatives, beautifying our public spaces with native pollinator plants and preserving the beauty of our wilderness with sustainable forestry practices.

Implementing sustainable forestry allows land rehabilitation to occur naturally and creates employment opportunities. The potential for the development of training programs creates a unique niche for Elliot Lake.

Integrating traditional ecological knowledge allows for a deeper understanding of our interconnectedness with one another and the environment that sustains us. Creating reciprocal relationships and land stewardship guided by Nation-to-Nation partnerships.

Aligning ourselves with the duty to consult, partnering with Serpent River First Nations. Guided by the 94 Calls to Action and the principles respecting the Government of Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples, is crucial to Canada’s future and our humanity. Aligning with the City of Elliot Lake Community Improvement Plan 2024.

When I drive around and see people working on their landscaping I’m in total awe. A place known for being cold especially after this winter has so much beauty. The love and care they put into planting flowers and gardens - you can just tell they are proud of their homes.

I’d like to see a contest that would encourage more people to plant flowers or gardens. With some prizes being handed out. I just wish I had the patience and green thumb that most residents here have!

Elliot Lake is known as the Jewel of the Wilderness due to clear lakes, rocky hills, forests, and striking northern landscapes. It is a community shaped by nature, resilience, and pride. Here we have clean air, peaceful water, abundant wildlife, and the changing colors of all four seasons. Its lakes, trails, lookouts, and outdoor spaces support recreation, tourism, wellness, and a deep connection to the land. In a world that often moves too quickly, Elliot Lake gives us the value of quiet places, natural spaces, and a community that lives close to the outdoors.

The history includes Indigenous presence, fur harvesting, logging, mining, and reinvention once the mines closed. In many areas of mine reclamation, it is not easy to tell where all of the mines were. Maintaining this is important for our wildlife. Once known for uranium mining, Elliot Lake has continued to evolve, building a future rooted in retirement living, tourism, small business, outdoor recreation, and community spirit. We have faced change with determination and have continued to shine. And we will evolve again as all things need to progress.

Protecting and promoting Elliot Lake means supporting local businesses, preserving natural spaces, honoring its history, and investing in the people who give the community its heart. It means protecting the land by continuing to monitor the mining reclamation process to keep our water safe, make sure new builds around the bush use safe designs and materials, maintain water testing of new build areas, plant trees and plants along shorelines to prevent soil erosion and keep the fish healthy, maintain trails for year round safe use, and promote ecotourism to highlight the beauty of Elliot Lake.

As residents, leaders, and friends of Elliot Lake, we should continue to care for this remarkable place and share its value with pride.

MEYER, Jeannie

I’m excited to share my candidate presentation on preserving Elliot Lake’s beautiful scenery and public spaces. It presents my ideas and residents’ ideas for protecting the environment, enhancing trails, redesigning the downtown, and encouraging community involvement.

It also opens with a brief reflection on local history and language and ends with a few questions that I hope the incoming council will consider.

I want to specifically acknowledge the Elliot Lake XC Ski & Bike Club for the hard work they have put into trail maintenance and expansion, and the Kiwanis Club for championing community clean-up days.

There are many initiatives in our region (active or planning) that strive to maintain the “Jewel” of Elliot Lake, and each deserves recognition and gratitude; I welcome all organizations to talk more about their current undertakings.

Elliot Lake is called “The Jewel in the Wilderness” for good reason. Our lakes, forests, trails, parks, natural spaces, and strong sense of community are some of our greatest assets. Protecting and enhancing these assets should be an important part of planning for Elliot Lake’s future.

I would promote a balanced approach that encourages growth and investment while protecting the natural character that makes Elliot Lake unique. This includes reviewing our current policies, practices, and procedures to determine what is working well, what could be improved, and where there are opportunities to strengthen them. We do not need to start from scratch—we already have a strong foundation. My approach would be to build on what we have, enhance it, and make thoughtful improvements where needed.

I would support continued investment in our trail network, parks, waterfronts, green spaces, and recreational areas. Where possible, development should consider the preservation of mature trees, natural landscapes, and connections between our green spaces. Keeping Elliot Lake clean, attractive, and well-maintained is something we should all take pride in.

Beauty is also about culture, creativity, and community. I would like to see continued support for our Arts and Culture groups and our Arts and Entertainment community, including theatrical performances, live music, musical theatre, community productions, and other opportunities that bring people together. These activities contribute to our quality of life, provide opportunities for local talent, and can also attract visitors to our community.

We should also take the opportunity to recognize and celebrate Indigenous roots and history, while also preserving and sharing the story of Elliot Lake’s uranium mining heritage. Our community was shaped by the people who came here to build a life and work in the uranium mines, and that history is an important part of who we are today. The stories of miners, families, businesses, and the communities that grew around the mining industry should continue to be remembered and shared with future generations.

I would support opportunities to incorporate our history through heritage displays, public art, interpretive signage, community events, cultural programming, and tourism initiatives, while working respectfully with Indigenous communities to ensure Indigenous perspectives, stories, art, culture, and connection to the land are appropriately represented.

I also believe beautification can be a community-wide effort. Partnerships with residents, local businesses, arts and cultural organizations, service groups, Indigenous communities, and recreation clubs could create more gardens, pollinator spaces, public art, cultural displays, and community projects throughout Elliot Lake.

Most importantly, I would encourage decisions that consider the long-term impact on our environment, culture, heritage, and community, not simply the immediate benefit. We can grow, invest, celebrate our history, support the arts, honour our Indigenous roots, and welcome new opportunities without losing the wilderness and community spirit that define us.

Protecting “The Jewel in the Wilderness” is not about stopping progress—it is about building on what we already have, honouring where we came from, enhancing what works, and making sure the Elliot Lake we leave for the next generation is every bit as special as the one we inherited.

I think it’s important that we have development standards that promote maintaining the character of the city. Or at minimum, prioritize beautifying the city. We also have to consider balancing environmental protection with responsible economic activity via forestry and shoreline management, ensuring residents and visitors can continue to enjoy trails, lakes and recreational areas.

Growth and environmental stewardship don’t have to be opposing goals. A beautiful city helps attract residents, tourists, businesses and investment. This brings me to one of the issues I consider most important, our roads and streets.

There are a lot of road ways, curbs and boulevards that are in need of repair. Much of our road infrastructure is several decades old, and it shows.

Part of having a beautiful city is having well maintained roadways, culverts and boulevards. Everyone uses them, and it costs the Residents more money on vehicle maintenance when roads/streets are not being maintained or repaired. (See Spine Road).

When someone enters Elliot Lake, the condition of our roads, curbs, boulevards and public spaces contributes significantly to their impression of our city.

I’d like to see a long-term infrastructure renewal program put in place that prioritizes the roads in the worst condition first, with reasonable and measurable goals moving forward.

Oakhill Road and Maple Road reconstruction was approved by council on December 22, 2025 for the 2026 Capital Budget; however, yesterday, the City released a News Update informing of more repairs.

This morning, ElliotLakeCitizen (ELC) reached out to a co-Acting CAO at the City requesting their permission for the new Director of Public Works to provide information regarding the status of the tender and reconstruction budgeted for Oakhill and Maple in 2026.

Oakhill and Maple - next year, Dunlop Shores Road and Stanrock Road - currently under review

co-Acting CAO Natalie Bray responded at 11:48 AM.

In addition to serving as co-Acting CAO again, Bray is the City’s municipal clerk and is also carrying responsibilities for October 26 Election Day.

In her gracious response, Bray noted, “As today is Mr. Young’s third day with the City, I’m happy to provide you with an update on these projects while he gets settled into his new role.

“The tender for the Dunlop Shores Road and Stanrock Road resurfacing closed August 7^th and are currently under review.

“For Maple Road and Oakhill Road, the tender is still being finalized with the City’s engineer of record, and is anticipated to be released this fall, with construction currently planned for next year.

“I anticipate that further updates on these projects will also be provided to Council as the projects progress,” Bray informed.

2026 Capital Budget: Going ‘all-in in infrastructure’

Commenting during the December 22, 2025 presentation to council, Director of Finance/Treasurer, Andrew Ault explained, “our capital budget for 2026 was done with the idea that we want to go all-in in infrastructure.

“And so, I did a tour with all the directors of our infrastructure and have come up with what I think is a good balance between the work that needs to be done today while saving enough for tomorrow,” Ault said.

The director that Ault was referring to was (then) new Director of Public Works, Leslie Whiteman. Whiteman left the building without fanfare about five months after being welcomed by Interim CAO (CAO?) Rob deBortoli.

Serving in the military, David Csikasz has lived in many places but Elliot Lake caught his eye as a place to settle after retirement.

His family name is pronounced like “cheekoz.”

Csikasz tried to make the move in 2022 but with prices spiking after COVID, it didn’t come together. Last year, it worked out and he is loving it here, he told ElliotLakeCitizen, earlier today.

It’s the small town life, friendliness, and the pace, he describes enjoying the most.

“I like the small towns. I like the fact that it’s an older population. It just makes you feel a little safer,” he said adding, “people are so - well, everywhere you go, people talk to you.”

Arena remediation concerns

Csikasz expressed concern about the cost and the processes around the arena remediation.

“The fact that Johnson Controls walked away [from overseeing the project], like I said, they're a very reputable company, they've done many contracts for the military, we've never had a problem with them.

“If I end up getting in, that definitely is going to be heavily scrutinized and looked at. See who dropped the ball where,” he said.

More ATV friendly

He would like to see the city more ATV friendly and with more camping opportunities. “I think we need more camping spots. Easier for people to come up and visit,” he said.

And he would like it easier to use them in town, too.

Campaign approach

Csikasz: “I’m just going to do a flyer with what’s important from what I’ve heard, and what’s important to me. And another thing, I’m not going to actively ask for donations.”

“People have enough trouble trying to put food on their table now. You don’t have to ask for $25, $50. I’m just going to buy flyers out of my own pocket, and if somebody wants to contribute, sure, you’re more than welcome to, but don’t cause any strain on your wallet. None on my behalf,” he said.

Prefers a ward system

“I don’t like the at-large system. I prefer a ward system because it just makes those councillors responsible for their area.

He said that if everybody’s from the same area, they don’t fully appreciate what is going on in other areas of the city.

‘It just irked me that nobody else was running against’

ELC: Is this the first time that you’ve felt a call to service at this [mayoral] level?

“Actually, it just irked me that nobody else was running against. Like, why not?

“Don’t just give it to them, you know - hand them a piece of cake and say, there, you can eat that too!

“Everybody’s saying something’s got to change. It’s the same old, same old.”

Csikasz: “I can bring a change, and it’ll be colourful. It’ll be fun. It’ll be, you know, hands and feet inside the car at all times, because this ride is going to go really fast!”
